I

feel sorry for people who don’t enjoy reading. I get so much pleasure from a good book that I can’t imagine not wanting to curl up with one whenever the opportunity presents, which these days for me is just not often enough. I recently finished reading All That I Am, a wonderful novel by Anna Funder, which took out this year’s Miles Franklin award. A good book leaves you feeling satisfied, whereas I think a great book leaves you wanting more – when I read the last word of All That I Am, I felt bereft, like I had just said goodbye to an old friend for the last time. I can always pick up the book and read it again, but it’s never the quite the same as taking in those words for the first time. I suppose that is the pursuit of the avid reader – to find that unputdownable novel, a story that distracts you from other mundane

] tasks, that calls you back to your favourite chair, that causes pain when the inevitable end arrives. But books are like buses – there will be another one just around the corner. You just have to find it. And if you’re like me and often walk into a bookshop without a clue about which one to choose, we are here to help. We’ve put together a summer reading guide (it’s over the page) for all those bookworms out there. Hopefully it will inspire. If your pursuits are more physical than literary, our agenda item this week is all about apps that inspire health and fitness. Smartphone users can turn to page 26 to read up on that one. But if real estate is your thing, our property cover story this week has some interesting stats on affordable housing. Turn to page 42 to find out more.

PREVIEW The heat is on to find your favourite book for the summer break, and MWP is here to help.

]

r e m m Su reading guide A

fter a couple of pretty ordinary summers I haven’t heard too many Sunshine Coasters complaining about the weather we’ve been dished up over the past few weeks – long hot days and reasonably mild nights have been the norm, and if you’re lucky enough to get a decent break over the Christmas holidays, chances are you’ll be spending

a bit of time down at your local strip of sand. As well as the ubiquitous family-sized SPF 30, you’ll probably want a decent book or two to throw into the beach tote. Can’t decide what to read? This summer reading guide is for you, so check it out before you head down to your local bookseller (and no, don’t be tempted to jump online).

COMPILED BY Jemma Pearson Summer reading picks: MWP’s Jemma Pearson I’ve already started on Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, because I do like to take in a classic every few books or so. Madame Bovary is considered a landmark in modern literature and landed its author in hot water when it was published in the mid 19th century – Flaubert was prosecuted for ‘offending public decency’. By today’s standards it will probably seem pretty tame, but I’ll pass on 50 Shades for this important contribution to fiction. This year’s Man Booker prize winner was Hilary Mantel for Bring Up the Bodies, the second instalment of the Thomas Cromwell trilogy. I’m a bit of an anglophile and a sucker for historical fiction, so am keen to tackle Wolf Hall, the first

book in the series (which, incredibly, was also a Man Booker prize winner, in 2009). I am no fashionista, but as someone who has worked in magazines for years, I am fascinated by what goes on behind the scenes at other publications, particularly the seminal US Vogue. (If you caught the documentary The September Issue you’ll probably agree with me.) So Grace: A Memoir, from the pen (and photo album) of US Vogue’s creative director Grace Coddington, is also on my list.

Summer reading picks: Graeme Bowden from The BookShop at Caloundra The Orchardist by Amanda Coplin A terrific first novel. Beautifully written. The story is set in America and spans several decades from around the 1860s with an unforgettable cast of characters. This book will engage all of your emotions and is a perfect book for book clubs. One of my favourites. Extreme South by James Castrission This is the story of the two young Aussies who followed Scott’s footsteps to the South Pole. These are the same blokes who rowed to New Zealand in a kayak in 2008. Two incredibly inspiring young men following their dreams.

Eureka by Peter Fitzsimons This is the latest book from a wonderful storyteller about the revolt at the Eureka Stockade in 1854. I am really looking forward to reading this book, as Fitzsimons has a way of looking at his subjects from a different angle and I don’t know enough about this very important part of our history. The Next Element by Andy Allen This is the cookbook from Andy Allen, who won MasterChef 2012. I have taken a great interest in cooking over the past few years. I love the idea of good, healthy, simple recipes and this book has plenty of them.

The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson The longest title for a book I can remember, but it has been a bestseller overseas. Our customers have made a point of telling us how very, very funny and quirky it is. It will be the next book I read. Say You’re Sorry by Michael Robotham I love Michael Robotham’s books and you will too if you like good crime novels. They are just a bit different and you will think of Joe and Ruiz as old friends.

Summer reading picks: Annie Grossman from Annie’s Books on Peregian Tamam Shud: The Somerton Man Mystery by Kerry Greenwood A man was found on an Adelaide beach in 1948 with no visible cause of death and absolutely no identification, nothing on him except a tiny piece of paper with the words ‘TAMAM SHUD’ written on it. This case has never been solved. Greenwood, author of the fabulous Phryne Fisher Mysteries series, reopens and examines this bizarre and intriguing case, and finishes with a short piece of fiction where Phryne Fisher ultimately solves the mystery. Travels with Epicurus: A Journey to a Greek Island in Search of an Authentic Old Age by Daniel Klein What a treasure of a book! This is a humorous and uplifting meditation on ageing. Seventysomething-year-old Daniel Klein travels to the

Greek island of Hydra with a number of books tucked under his arm, including the philosophies of Epicurus, seeking the best way to achieving a fulfilling old age. He discovers to his (and my) delight, that we are at the pinnacle of life, and all our experiences and friendships over the years can now be reflected upon, the striving years are over and we have “docked in the harbour, having safeguarded our true happiness”. Flinders by Rob Mundle Author and sailor Rob Mundle has written a colourful history of Matthew Flinders, the man who put Australia on the map. Whether a reader of history or page-turners, this book will carry the reader away to the past, on epic voyages, devastating shipwrecks and the boiling fury of a storm-lashed ocean. This is a gripping adventure! Lost Voices by Christopher Koch This is a magnificent Australian novel told in three parts. The setting is predominantly the Tasmanian wilderness, which Koch has captured

with such artistry and detail, moving from the 1950s back to the mid 1900s. The middle part, set in the past, is a story of an outlaw community (bushrangers), led by charismatic ex-soldier Lucas Wilson who is attempting to create a Utopian society where the ultimate goal is peace and community, but it is ruled over by Wilson and his gun. My prediction is a third Miles Franklin Award for Christopher Koch and Lost Voices. The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton This is the fourth book from Morton, and is possibly her best to date. It is a story of buried secrets, past loves and past horrors, with a mystery which will baffle you right up to the end. Morton is aat the top of her form here, and end this is a book I will happily recommend to a variety of readers. This is a guaranteed good time!

$30,000 RAISED FOR CAMBODIAN KIDS

Kawana Spotlight’s Neil Smith presents Michael Kramer with a cheque to help Cambodia’s orphans

W

hat a difference a year makes – a whopping $70,000 in fact. It is largely thanks to the support of Sunshine Coast locals and businesses, and Spotlight stores across the nation, who have embraced the cookbook Food For The Soul, to help Cambodian orphans. The project is the initiative of My Weekly Preview publisher Michael Kramer, to raise money for the orphanage Together for Cambodia in Siem Reap. The cookbook, which has been available for about a year, is sold in Coast cafes Raw Energy,

Nude, Envy and Cafe by the Beach as N well as all Spotlight stores. we Spotlight recently donated a cheque for $30,000, which was presented to Kramer at the Kawana Spotlight store Kra recently. He says the orphanage supports rece nearly 40 children aged from two to 16, near most orphaned or abandoned. “Some have been rescued from sexual “S predators or violent families, but the preda majority are orphans,” Kramer says. The money raised to date has already been used to buy land and provide for the children’s ongoing care and education. Future proceeds will help build a new home for the orphans. Kramer says the book was made possible thanks to the efforts of a number of people and businesses who donated their time and services to produce and publish it. As a result, 100 per cent of the proceeds go directly to the kids. The book features authentic Cambodian recipes supplied by Bopha Devi restaurant in Melbourne, many of which had not previously been put to paper. This combined effort, supported by the people who buy the cookbook, is helping make young lives better and provide them with hope for the future.

‘Teenpreneurs’ set up shop Coast youth will be getting some early exposure to the world of business while indulging in creative pursuits this summer. Young entrepreneurs, aged between 12 and 22, are setting up shop in selected Sunshine Coast Council Libraries to sell their one-off original creations. If you need some creative shopping ideas this Christmas and you don’t want to face the crowds, head to the Y-shops located at Maroochydore, Caloundra, Noosa and Nambour Libraries from December 1 to January 19. Every Saturday morning from 9.30am to 11.30am, young ‘teenpreneurs’ will be gaining invaluable retail experience and confidence in their passion to create their own business. With no stall, vendor, rent or equipment fees, Sunshine Coast Libraries supply the space, the tables and the venue, giving these young people the opportunity to showcase their talent. On sale will be original merchandise, including works by local indigenous artist Zoe Raymond, and everything from clothing, dream catchers, beaded jewellery and mosaics, to fairy twig houses and much more. FREE WIFI TRIAL

C

oast residents will be able to access free WiFi at selected locations across the region from mid-December. Big Air Community Broadband has been selected by the Sunshine Coast Council to provide enhanced, free WiFi broadband in 24 locations for a one-year trial. The locations included in the trial include the council’s libraries and galleries, tourist parks and council forecourts, as well as Cotton Tree and Coolum business precinct open spaces. “Some of the locations already have either free or paid WiFi facilities, however, potential faster connection speed and coverage will improve as a result,” Economic Development (digital) portfolio councillor, Stephen Robinson says. Sunshine Coast Airport has already begun a free WiFi service across its terminals. Robinson says the council and Big Air WiFi partnership is designed to provide an alternative source of broadband for users in locations across the region during the trial. Businesses are encouraged to provide feedback during the independent evaluation process. Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy

We certainly hope the trial is a success and the service is extended to other locations across the Coast

Sandy Zubrinich Zubrinich welcomed the free WiFi initiative, saying it has become essential to have fast, reliable, round-the-clock access to email and the internet. “We certainly hope the trial is a success and the service is extended to other locations across the Coast.” The peak business body has also urged representatives from all levels of government to work together to ensure the region has access to the National Broadband Network (NBN) as soon as possible.

Zubrinich says representatives from districts across Australia will be beating a path to the government’s door making their case for inclusion, and the Sunshine Coast cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. “There is enormous potential in areas such as health, education and aviation, but having access to the latest technology will be essential for us to move quickly and take advantage of opportunities for growth in these sectors,” she says. “We must have access to the NBN in order to be competitive and to attract new business and skilled workers to the Sunshine Coast.”

News Previews GIFTS FOR KIDS IN CARE If you are looking for a way to spread some extra Christmas cheer this year, the Kids in Care Christmas Appeal will help put a smile on a child’s face. The Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services annual appeal is aiming to provide gifts to more than 8000 children who will be living in care this Christmas. These children are living away from home in order to be kept safe from abuse or neglect. You can get involved by donating a suitable gift or voucher valued at $20 to $25. Donations can be made at any Harvey Norman store in Queensland or you can visit communities.qld. gov.au for a list of collection points and for gift ideas. The appeal runs until December 14.

QLD MP ON THE WAR PATH

Alex Douglas

former government MP says he’ll run hundreds of TV ads to make Queenslanders understand that Premier Campbell Newman can’t tell the truth and is a threat to democracy. Alex Douglas says Newman and his leadership team must quit, after dumping him as the independent chairman of parliament’s ethics committee. He says the premier told “untruths” in parliament when he claimed Douglas was happy to leave the role.

“Queenslanders need to understand that we have a person who is incapable of telling the truth running the state and you cannot have that,” Douglas told ABC radio on Tuesday. Douglas said he would run 700 ads to expose the true circumstances about his removal, and more if he could secure additional financial support. “I will be stating that what the premier did last week is an absolute affront to democracy in Queensland,” he said. Douglas, who is now an independent MP, has previously said he’s considering joining any new party formed by billionaire LNP friend-turned-foe Clive Palmer, or setting up his own. Comment has been sought from Palmer about whether he’ll help fund the advertising campaign, and from Acting Premier Jeff Seeney, but at the time of going to press they had no comment. AAP

Records tumble during spring heatwave: BOM Eighteen weather stations in south-eastern Australia recorded their hottest November days on record last week as the country sweltered through one of its most significant spring heatwaves. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) on Tuesday issued a special climate statement saying the event started with a build-up of extreme heat in central Australia over the weekend of November 24 and 25. The very hot air mass was drawn to the south-east with the heatwave reaching peak intensity on Thursday, November 29. Extreme heat covered much of Victoria, inland NSW and northern and eastern South Australia, while the hot weather also spread to Tasmania. “Eighteen long-term stations in Victoria, NSW and South Australia had their hottest November days on record,” the BOM statement said. “Overall, it was the hottest November day on record – over 33.8 per cent of Victoria, 10.4 per cent of NSW and 1.2 per cent of South Australia.”

Records were broken by as much as 1.8 degrees at Balranald in NSW and Ouyen in Victoria. It reached 45.8 degrees at Ouyen, the state’s highest spring temperature on record. The highest temperature of the heatwave was 46.2 degrees in Pooncarie in NSW. Record-high minimum temperatures were also recorded near the NSW-Victorian border on the night of November 29 to 30. “Rutherglen’s minimum temperature of 25.7 degrees was 2.8 degrees higher than any other November value in 94 years of observations,” the statement said. PARENTAL LINK TO YOUNG DRINKERS FOUND

C

hildren are almost twice as likely to have been drunk or consuming alcohol every month if their parents are heavy drinkers, a UK survey has found. The link between the drinking habits of parents and their children’s relationship to alcohol has been revealed in a study by the independent charity, Drinkaware. It found that 19 per cent of youngsters who had parents drinking over recommended guidelines had been drunk before, compared with 11 per cent of children whose parents drink below the guidelines or not at all. Similarly, 21 per cent of children with heavy-drinking parents drink at least monthly in comparison with just 12 per cent of youngsters whose parents do not exceed guidelines. Siobhan McCann, head of campaigns and communications at Drinkaware, says, “Most parents want their children to grow up with a healthy relationship with alcohol and try to set a good example. “The problem is that some parents drink above the guidelines without realising and this in turn influences their children’s attitudes and behaviour. “When it comes to alcohol, parents have the biggest influence on their children and lots of children would turn to their parents first for advice.” Government advice says men should not regularly drink more than three or four units of alcohol a day – about 700 millilitres of four per cent beer) and women, two to three units (a 175-millilitre glass of wine). The research, carried out by Ipsos Mori, polled 1433 parents from the upper middle to lower middle classes across the UK and 652 of their children were aged 10 to 17. It showed that parents who drink above the unit guidelines also have a more relaxed attitude to underage drinking than parents who are teetotal or drink within the guidelines. They are more likely to think it is inevitable that children under 16

[ 20 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ D E CE M B E R 7, 2 0 1 2

20.indd 1

will drink and more likely to think it is fine for parents to give alcohol to youngsters that age. They are also less likely to think their own drinking has the biggest effect on their children’s attitude to alcohol. On a more positive note, the survey found that the majority of children had what it called a “sensible” attitude to drink. More than three-quarters (77 per cent) of 10- to 17-year-olds think that seeing young people their age getting drunk is not “cool”, while 93 per cent think it is not OK for someone their age to get drunk once a week. Just over one in 10 children believe it is OK to try getting drunk to see what it is like. The research also found that more than a third (36 per cent) of parents who drink above the recommended daily guidelines believe they drink within safe limits. To coincide with the study, Drinkaware has published advice for parents about festive drinking compiled by a panel of mothers, including Mumsnet co-founder Carrie Longton, TV’s Dr Sarah Jarvis and parenting expert Sue Atkins. Longton says, “It’s so important that parents are aware of the facts and feel confident talking to their kids about alcohol. “With Christmas just round the corner, it’s likely that children will be more aware of alcohol and might become curious about trying a drink.” PA M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

While there is an obvious need for construction and earthworks to get the bricks and mortar off the ground, the council’s health, medical and education portfolio councillor Peter Cox says a lot more will be required to make the hospital functional. This includes everything from cleaning services to stationery supplies, printing services and supply and maintenance of air-conditioners. “We are not just talking about the construction trades,” Cox says. “While the project manager will need concreters, plumbers and electricians, they will also need businesses to register to supply office

equipment, printing services, floor coverings, cleaning, stationery, people that service air-conditioners, provide security and much more.” There are opportunities for locals to take advantage of, and the council wants Coast businesses to win as many tenders as possible. And to ensure that happens, the council is showing you how to do it. The council has produced a video explaining how to register your business to tender for work on the hospital and is conducting workshops to help businesses obtain the necessary qualifications and skills. “Businesses have to register to obtain information about works packages and the video shows how to do this step by step,” Cox says. Businesses interested in taking advantage of the massive construction project at Kawana can visit www.business. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au to access the video and information about workshops.

Retirees on the move Former Gold Coasters Faye and Graham Williams (pictured) have left the glitter strip in exchange for a more relaxed lifestyle in the heart of the Sunshine Coast’s booming Kawana. The couple, in their 60s, were the first to move into the new Edgewater development at Lake Kawana and couldn’t be happier with their new home and lifestyle. “We’re always outdoors, we take long walks around the lake and even have beautiful water views from the new gym,” Faye says. “We feel like we’re on holidays every day.”

Get your business

involved

Edgewater opened in August and has been a hit with retirees looking to downsize, its popularity also driven by the development of the hospital precinct. “The development of the new Sunshine Coast Hospital, and also Oceanside, were huge drawcards for us,” Faye says. Proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council

Key program dates for the public hospital’s construction: February 2013 to December 2013 – f rst multi-level carpark. Mid 2013 to December 2014 – the main hospital structure. From April 2014 – f tout and f nishes. Late 2016 – Project completion (stage one). Businesses interested in tendering for work on the hospital or other major projects can attend council-run sessions on writing an effective capability statement on December 13 at Lake Kawana Community Centre from 9am to 12pm or from 1pm to 4pm. The cost is $35 per person. To book call 5413 1400.

t is important to continually review portfolio construction to ensure your investments are the most appropriate for the current economic climate. There are many reasons to consider ejecting a stock from your portfolio and listed below are some of the more common ones. If the investment has fallen in value, many people continue to hold until they get their money back. However, the way to think about this is not in terms of how big the loss is, but where the price will go from here. It is quite possible that selling and reinvesting elsewhere will give better returns. One of the reasons for a price fall can be a profit downgrade, and we’ve seen plenty of those over the past five years. Quite often a profit downgrade can be indicative of structural problems within the industry or perhaps management problems. While a sudden sell-off may actually be an opportune time to purchase a company, it may also be a good time to exit. Careful analysis and review is required. Trends come and go in investing. In the 1980s it was the entrepreneurs; in the late 1990s it was the tech boom. If you get lured into such trends, you have to know when to exit. Until the last few

months, mining services companies were popular investments, when it was apparent the slowdown in mining would seriously affect revenues in these satellite companies. Prices of some stocks in this sector have halved or worse. At some stage you just have to admit it’s time to move on. While trends come and go, our lifestyle is constantly evolving. In the last decade alone we witnessed the death of the film camera, the rise of digital music, flat screen TVs, internetbased TV, and i-anythings. More recently, the fall in sales of traditional retailers due to the rise of online shopping has become a dominant trend. Picking new permanent trends is probably one of the hardest investing skills, but if it is a permanent change, don’t try to fight it. Finally, sometimes things just go your way. However, when a stock reaches your target price, it needs to be re-examined with a new look at the company’s future prospects. You shouldn’t fall in love with any investment and if yours has reached its target price, perhaps there are better opportunities elsewhere. increase,” Lauth says. “The apps have come a long way, and they’re constantly upgrading.” They are also proliferating. Click on Apple’s health and fitness apps page and you’ll find iRunner, Fitocracy, Fitter Fitness, Fitness Buddy, Fitbit, Fitness Pro, miCoach, Abs Workout, RunKeeper, Virtual Trainer – and about 250 more. And it’s not just fitness. There’s a parallel world of apps geared to other aspects of health and wellness: iTriage, iFirstAidLite, InstantHeartRate, CuresA-Z, not to mention a host of downloadable apps such as OvulationCalendar that help women track their menstrual and fertility cycles. And, yes, there are apps with tips for carrying on when that fertility cycle is spot on. The medical community is embracing the trend, holding contests to encourage programmers to design disease-specific apps that doctors can ‘prescribe’ to patients with heart disease, diabetes and other chronic conditions. Ronald McCoy of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners has told Fairfax newspapers that doctors are using apps to get up-to-date information about drugs and

treatments, which helps them better treat patients. And Australian Medical Association president Dr Steve Hambleton has said he recently accessed 15 apps from a US website that helps doctors improve their practices. The next phase is already in the works: apps that will transform your smartphone into a regulated medical device. Think phones as electrocardiography, or ECG, machines that can detect abnormal heart rhythms and determine if a patient is having a heart attack. Such clinical apps will not go forward without approval from the relevant governing bodies whether in Australia or overseas, but in the US, federal congressman Mike Honda is working on a bill to establish a new FDA Office of Mobile Health designed to regulate health apps in the US. In the meantime, the private sector is leading the charge at Health 2.0-inspired code-a-thons, live events where developers gather to build apps and tools for improved health care. It’s a topic getting

prime billing at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January – The Human Body: The Next Digital Revolution. For now, most GPs are happy to see patients using simple apps to motivate them to exercise, eat well and lose weight. MyFitnessPal has emerged as one of the more popular apps in this category, allowing users to set weight loss goals then diligently chart calories consumed, calories burned and poundage. Lauth, of Kaiser Permanente, says dozens of her charges use MyFitnessPal, getting into the swing of competition when they add friends to their wellness social network who can track each other’s progress – or lack thereof. “These are great motivators,” says Lauth. “When you hit your goals, you and your friends see the results.” AAP

offee has overtaken the humble cuppa as Australia’s hot beverage of choice, with a new report finding the nation’s palate is diversifying. The BIS Foodservices Coffee and Beverages 2012 report found Aussies have purchased more units of coffee despite price rises over the past two years. Tap water has also experienced a resurgence in popularity, with people forgoing bottled water for the budget-friendly tap. The number of cups of coffee purchased has increased from 1.8 billion in 2010 to 2.1 billion in 2012, a jump of 19.5 per cent. The rise has occurred despite the average price of a takeaway coffee rising seven per cent from an average of $3.62 per cup to $3.86.

The average number of units of tea consumed per person per week at home has reflected this changing taste, falling from 8.6 to 7.9. “The demise of tea can largely be attributed to the demise in popularity of black tea,” says Sissel Rosengren, head of BIS Foodservices. “Green tea and other types of tea have tracked reasonably well over the same period, but black tea with milk in particular has seen a sharp decline in popularity.” Overall, the consumption of black tea with milk at home has dropped 11 per cent since 2010. And the picture for tea both away from home and at work is just as bleak. Rosengren says tea is no longer trendy and consumers feel “shortchanged when they spend $3 on hot water and a teabag”. He says companies need to push the health benefits of tea to stem the flow of people deserting the drink and find a way to market the beverage to a younger demographic. AAP

Would you share an ice-cream with Obama? We love ice-cream so much that some of us even eat it for breakfast. And on a boiling hot summer’s day, that’s hardly surprising. But what is slightly odd, according to a new survey, is who we would like to steal a lick of ice-cream from. Barack Obama? Apparently that’s what 15 per cent of Aussies voted for when asked which celeb they’d like to share an ice-cream with. The industry study was commissioned by an ice-cream brand, just as we are about to head into summer. Kate Middleton, however, was the most popular choice for ice-cream sharing, followed by Hollywood star George Clooney and ‘our Nicole’ (Kidman). They also wanted to get the royal scoop with Prince Harry, with more than one in 10 Aussies naming him as the celeb they’d share a cone with. Maybe it’s something to do with the teeth, but Twilight actor Robert Pattinson garnered just six per cent of the vote. This is all despite the participants in the survey saying they hated being asked to share their ice-cream, coming number two in the top three ice-cream gaffes on the etiquette list. According to the research, the top complaint was the unsolicited

lick and the third was eating from your cone after it had been dropped on the floor. Baskin-Robbins spokesperson Julian Casa says while going out for ice-cream is typically a shared ritual, slurping another’s is considered the ultimate in bad manners, whether you ask first or take a lick without permission. Unsurprisingly, men are the least willing to share, with almost a third of men rating being asked to share their ice-cream as the ultimate faux pas compared with just one in five women. Men are also more willing than women to forgive someone for eating an ice-cream that’s been dropped on the floor. But both agree that taking a lick without permission is the worst crime. AAP

French down to one glass of wine per day PREVIEW ‘Education Through Libation’ is Dr Plonk’s motto. He has spent most of his legal drinking age life around wine, and through his many wine travels is focused on the fun, frivolity and the demystification of wine.

IT’S NO TIME TO BE STINGY Christmas should be the time of year when we can have a little splurge. Not that an expensive gift is more cherished than a handmade gift, given with love. Mrs Plonk loves the ‘handmade’ theory, and one of her great gifts is Baileys Whisky liqueur. She uses nothing but the best ingredients, but one year she went a bit too far. Whisky is the key ingredient and good quality is recommended, preferably Irish. One of my Irish brothers distils water and has accidentally made homemade whisky. Rough is not a word I would use to describe it, but I note the president of Iran did call him for the recipe, as they thought it would suit their WOMD portfolio. So one year, Mrs Plonk gave the bottle of Baileys of Casa de Ryan to her friends and everyone agrees it’s the best they have ever tasted. It turns out that she got the Johnny Walker label colouring system back to front. You see she thought the red label was the most

Somersby Cider

expensive and blue the cheapest. Seems like a few friends got a bottle of Baileys that would range between $100 and $300 per bottle. People often ask me about my Christmas day and how it links to my love of wine. Pretty simple really – if it’s cold and has bubbles, it works. Moët Vintage Champagne and French toast topped with smoked Petuna ocean trout kicks the day off. At around 11am, a sneaky dozen of oysters and some Cloudy Bay Te Koko sooth the nerves before the hungry rellies turn up. Prawns with some chilled Proseco or Angry Man Pale Ale beer sparks the rellies up. As Mrs Plonk works her magic on the duck and ham, I knock off some E&E Black Pepper Sparkling Shiraz. I can’t knock back one of Heston’s Hidden Orange puddings served with chilled Veuve Clicquot Demi-Sec champagne. And just for good measure, a little chilled Hennessey 1865 cognac ensures I don’t overdo it.

French wine consumption has fallen to a new low with the average adult now consuming barely a glass a day, the latest edition of a major consumption survey has found. A study that will have wine growers weeping into their vats also revealed that fizzy drinks and fruit juices are gradually pushing wine off the nation’s tables. Fewer than one in five French adults now drink wine almost every day, as health concerns and a sluggish economy maintain a long-term pattern of sharply falling consumption, according to research carried out every five years for the ministry of agriculture. The survey, published this week, found that the number of people who drank wine on a daily basis had fallen to 17 per cent in 2010, down from 21 per cent five years earlier. In the same period, the number of occasional drinkers – those who enjoy a glass once or twice a week – rose from 41 to 45 per cent. The number of teetotallers was stable at 38 per cent. The findings reflect a longterm trend that has France’s average wine consumption falling from 160 litres per adult, per year in 1965 to 57 litres in 2010, roughly the equivalent of a drop

from three glasses to one glass per person, per day. Caroline Plot, the official who oversaw the research, says increasing awareness of the perceived health dangers associated with regular consumption of alcohol had combined with economic worries, leading to consumers reducing their purchases of wine. “There has also been a real shift in consumption habits: fizzy drinks and fruit juices are taking the place of wine on the French table,” she adds. In 1980, wine would be served on average at one meal in two. By 2010, that had fallen to one in four. “Alcohol in general and wine in particular have become a weekend thing, to be consumed in a convivial or celebratory setting,” explains Philippe Janvier, one of the study’s authors. MAKE/MODEL ALFA ROMEO GIULIETTA JTDM DETAILS Five-door, five-seat hatchback with four-cylinder turbodiesel engine and six-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission. his is not really the type of car we’ve come to expect from Alfa Romeo – a diesel, automatic, five-door, five-seat family hatchback. But it’s probably the type of car Alfa Romeo needs to produce more of. The new Giulietta JTDm is a far cry from the type of vehicles that earned Alfa its legendary status. Cars that were romantic, sporty, sexy. Sure, it’s still got the unmistakable Alfa looks and, painted in that customary ‘rossa’, it’s not without its sex appeal. But the Giulietta we tested is about broadening the brand’s appeal.

Above all, it delivers things we’ve never associated with Alfa. Practicality. Functionality. Eff ciency. All with a liberal dose of legendary Italian f air. The Giulietta JTDm does that with f ve doors, ample interior space, a frugal yet responsive diesel engine and a quirky self-shifting transmission. The so-called TCT gearbox isn’t, strictly speaking, an automatic. It’s a dual-clutch transmission and alleviates the loss of energy typical of traditional automatics. Dual-clutch autos are becoming popular – although the Italian version is slightly less slick than those

we’ve seen in VWs, Audis and, more recently, Fords and BMWs. Alfa’s TCT gearbox feels racy when driven hard, but in normal circumstances the transmission feels a bit hesitant. And at low speeds, combined with the diesel engine, it feels rather herky-jerky. The Italians, for better or worse, seem to love their sometimes quirky transmissions – you’ll f nd similar boxes in everything from Fiats to Ferraris. I’m still not convinced that automatic transmissions are really an Italian specialty. What they are good at, is continued page 38 >

THIRST 4.5L/100km (combined figure), emissions 119gm/km. VERDICT A sensible Alfa, but still a sensuous one. BOTTOM LINE $40,490 (automatic transmission standard).

< from page 36 building cars that handle so well, and steer so beautifully, that every drive can be an adventure. The Giulietta is no exception. It’s wonderfully balanced and has a well-grounded, sturdy grip on the road. It seems to take bumps and imperfections in its stride without ever feeling unsettled or skittish. It revs willingly for an oil-burner and even sounds half decent when driven with a bit of enthusiasm, which is what you should be doing in an Alfa. Interestingly, the diesel model is available only in automatic form, with a one-size-fits all price of $40,490. That’s not cheap, but the lure of the fabled Italian brand no doubt adds a price premium. And the efficiency of the diesel will help you recoup some of that money at the petrol pump. The JTDm powerplant pushes the Giulietta into distinctly un-Alfa territory, with economy to rival fuel-miser hybrids. The official fuel consumption for this car is a frugal 4.5 litres per 100 kilometres – a figure we managed to get quite close to in our test. A stop-start system, which shuts down the engine when the car is stationary, contributes to that stunningly modest thirst. The stats say it produces a fairly modest 125 kilowatts – bolstered by a thumping 350 Newton metres of torque, which combine to give some more than respectable acceleration, reaching the speed limit in less than eight seconds.

Inside, the Giulietta is impressive. The finishes are glossy and have a real high-quality look and feel to them. There’s no question that Alfa has upped its game in this area. We particularly liked the row of aircraft-style, flip-up-or-down switches across the centre dash that fall easily to hand. Rather than building a massive screen into the dash for satellite navigation and the like, Alfa has effectively ‘outsourced’ that function to electronics maker Tom Tom, with a device known as Blue and Me perched atop the dashboard. It’s like an after-market accessory that comes as standard equipment but it integrates well. It brings with it clever little functions like an alarm that warns you if you’re drifting over the speed limit; or when you are approaching a fixed speed camera or red-light camera. Of course, speed limits have not traditionally been a primary concern of Alfa drivers, but the Giulietta is a machine to defy the norm. Albeit in a romantic, Italian kind of way.

Les notches up 20 years Pacific Ford Maroochydore’s sales manager Les Evangelista has celebrated a two-decade milestone with the company. After a workplace injury ended his building career, Evangelista chose to try his hand at car sales because it suited his personality. Les Evangelista with his And he attributes his longevity in the sales record book industry to a passion for helping customers choose the best car for their requirements. “I guess you could say it is in my blood, because my father sold cars in Griffith for 30 years and it was something that I naturally leaned towards when I couldn’t build anymore, he says. “I work 12-hour days, six days a week, but it’s a great challenge and really rewarding; I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it. Evangelista estimates he has sold more than 4000 vehicles since 1992 and he keeps an old sales record book where he handwrote the very first sale he made. “I have a number of repeat customers who have bought from me because I was simply courteous or smiled at them and we built a rapport from there, he says. “A smile costs nothing and it can give so much back in return so that’s the least you can do to make your job easier.

MY MOTORING INSIDER The latest news from MWP’s man on the ground.

World f rsts at LA Auto Show

Ford Territory on top

Ford’s Territory has reached a manufacturing milestone with the production of 150,000 of the popular family car. After extensive market research in 2004, Ford recognised customers needed to combine the best characteristics of family sedans, traditional SUVs and people movers. The car boasts Five Star Safety, an optional 2.7-litre turbo diesel engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. A Ford Australia spokesperson says Ford is incredibly proud of the milestone.

India eyes 007’s car Reuters reported last month that Mumbai tractor owners Mahindra and Mahindra were placing bids for ownership of Aston Martin, the car favoured by the world’s wealthy. While there were rumours the Mahindras were seeking a 50 per cent stake in the company, its Kuwaiti owner denied the reports. It has not stopped ongoing speculation about a bidding war between the Mahindras and a rival Italian bidder.

Motoring enthusiasts visiting the LA Auto Show have been rewarded with the global unveiling of 24 vehicles. The international motor show, which attracts top industry leaders from more than 50 countries, will run until December 9.

MOVING RIGHT

ALONG PREVIEW Housing affordability is at it’s highest level in 10 years, so now is the time to get a foot in. Fortunately, the Coast has plenty of properties under the $400,000 mark just waiting to be snapped up by smart buyers, so get in quick. WORDS Jarna Baudinette

ew data from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland shows demand for affordable homes has been increasing across the state. The REIQ’s September quarter median house price report was released last week and shows an increase in sales under $350,000, up 24 per cent on the same period last year. REIQ CEO, Anton Kardash, says lower interest rates and growing confidence is underpinning sales activity at the moment, especially at the lower end of the market. “Interest rates have reduced significantly this year and together with an improving economic outlook, this has spurred buyers into action,” Kardash says. “Demand for residential property in Queensland was fairly subdued until earlier this year when REIQ-accredited agencies began to report more traffic through open homes and most importantly more buyers prepared to buy.” Kardash says low residential rental vacancy rates and “robust rental growth” are also bringing investors back into the market. “Investors are recognising that yields have improved and are making a move on affordable property given our market appears to be turning a corner and demand for rental properties remains strong,” he says. The report identifies the Sunshine Coast’s three most affordable suburbs as Nambour, with a median house price of $315,000, Caloundra West at $350,000 and Bli Bli at $375,000. Rob Whiting of RE/MAX Property Services focuses on Caloundra’s more affordable suburbs, such as Caloundra West, Aroona and Little Mountain. He says buyers “can’t get enough” of properties listed for under $400,000. “We’re getting upwards of three or four bidders at auction and up to 40 groups through during inspections if it’s under $400,000,”

Whiting says. “The demand has been like that for a couple of years. People are more realistic about what they’re willing to spend on a property, and they don’t mind doing renovations. In areas like Caloundra West and Little Mountain you can buy a newer home, but on a smaller block, in that price range, but if they’re looking for location they’ll go to older areas such as Aroona, Currimundi, Wurtulla or Battery Hill and they’ll renovate. “But there’s always demand for it – typically those ones [under $400,000] will have far more people at the open homes.” Whiting says buyers in this price bracket range from first-home purchasers to investors, to those relocating from interstate. “We also have buyers from within suburbs, who are downsizing or reducing the mortgage. And recently, we’ve also had parents on behalf of their children, or who bring their children with them, trying to encourage them to get into the market at the moment.” Garry De Paoli from Riddell Real Estate is also seeing a lot of first-time buyers at the moment, drawn to the increased affordability. Interest rates have “The demand has grown quite reduced signif cantly this significantly,” he says. “We’ve got listings under $300,000 at the year and together with moment – our cheapest one is an improving economic $240,000, and we have another in outlook, this has spurred Nambour at $279,000 – compared to two years ago when there was buyers into action nothing at that price. The market has had an adjustment over the Anton Kardash

We also have buyers from within suburbs, who are downsizing or reducing the mortgage Rob Whiting

past three to four months, and realistically it needed to.” With Nambour topping the list of the Coast’s most affordable suburbs, De Paoli thinks buyers may be drawn to the surrounding areas because you can get “more bang for your buck” there. “There’s a lot of first-home buyers coming back into the market – there’s a lot of people just looking for value, but mainly it’s the first-home buyers,” De Paoli says. “Now that the market has had that adjustment, it’s within their reach.” While demand for homes under $400,000 has remained steady in Whiting’s area, he says increased sales are in part attributed to the fact

Another report from the Housing Industry Association also has good news on housing affordability. The HIA-CBA Housing Affordability Index increased by 5.3 per cent in the September 2012 quarter, which is a 15 per cent increase on the 2011 f gure. HIA’s chief economist, Dr Harley Dale, says September marks the seventh consecutive quarter of improvement in the index.

“The run of consecutive improvements in some regional indices is even longer, in some instances showing affordability has reached levels not seen since the early 2000s,” Dale says. “Housing affordability has been improving on the back of steadily growing incomes, falling interest rates, and easing dwelling prices. At the same time, however, transactions volumes have remained historically low as economic

that vendors are now pricing their homes more realistically, and are recognising that a property within this price bracket is much more likely to sell. “Vendors are very realistic in selling nowadays,” Whiting says. “They have gone through the past four years along with the rest of us, and people are pretty educated, the process is pretty transparent. “You don’t get too many people who are not willing to listen to the market now. So we are getting more sales away within a smaller time frame – that’s a fact.” It’s a trend REIQ CEO Kardash sees continuing into the new year. “Activity has been increasing throughout the year, so we are confident that 2013 will be an even better year for the Queensland property market,” he says.

uncertainty has weighed heavily on households’ willingness to engage in the residential property market.” However, Dale says further interest rate cuts should steady these tentative signs of recovery in the market. “An increase in home buyer action can occur without generating undue inf ationary pressure and would assist a much-needed recovery in new residential construction activity,” he says.

27 Acres on the Edge of Town Amazing house site opportunities from private, to overlooking lake sized springfed dam and the “Peace de Resistance” an elevated site with views down the Bli Bli Valley all the way to the Ocean. Was a top producing orchard with rich volcanic soil and abundant water – now very rundown. With the land in need of TLC an opportunity presents itself with little expense to return this paddock into a beautiful acreage once more. Circumstances require an urgent sale and the price has been sacrificed to attract early offers. $420,000 Gary Blake 0416 155 634

ACROSS

18 20 22 23 24 25

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 The moon’s in fellow air sign Libra, so tone down your over-talkative side and beef up your romantic side. Singles – love is likely with a work colleague or a platonic friend.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 If you are having problems, they won’t be resolved by curling up in your shell and being defensive. You need to face hiccups head on – no side-stepping, crabs.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Adjust the way you communicate this weekend – one size definitely won’t fit everyone. Some people need to be handled with kid gloves, while others will be lots of fun.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 A relationship with a child, teenager or friend will be put to the test. If you stay calm, things will settle down and you’ll be enjoying each other’s company by the end of the weekend.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Some people are getting sick and tired of your promises and offers of help, accompanied by no action. Laidback Librans – it’s time to step up to the plate and walk your talk!

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Old memories may upset you but don’t suppress your feelings. Use it as an opportunity to release negative old energy. Then you can move forward in a positive and proactive way.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 The focus is on friendships, as you reassess your current peer group. Be inspired by birthday great Jim Morrison: “A true friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself.”

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Are you feeling frustrated about the future? Does it seem as if your goals and dreams are permanently on hold? Be patient, and trust that things are progressing – slowly but surely.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 You have fabulous ideas about your career path, but thinking about something isn’t the same as doing it. Saturn challenges you to come up with realistic goals and a workable plan.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 When the moon’s in Libra your creative juices are flowing but don’t waste wonderful ideas via Piscean procrastination. Pay attention to your dreams – are they trying to tell you something?

SURF REPORT

with Steve Harris from Suburban Surf

Unfortunately this weekend’s forecast still holds no joy for surfers. On Thursday there will f nally be a short-lived change in the persistent northerly conditions we have had for weeks. There will be a small southerly swell up to two foot on the open beaches with light S/SE winds turning E/NE. On Friday there will be similar conditions to Thursday with waves up to two foot with light and variable winds tending E/NE later. For the weekend, well the news only gets worse – there will be an easing southerly swell with a tiny NE windswell to one foot. Winds will be moderate N/NW tending N/NE. With low tides this weekend around mid-morning and waves only one foot it’s going to be desperates only and try to f nd a bank on the open beaches out of the northerlies. Good surf ng.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Trevally are chopping into bait in the deeper channels, particularly from Goat Island to Twin Waters. Catch whiting and f athead from Maroochy Bar upstream. Mud crabs are at Bli Bli. SURF: Bait is moving in close to Pincushion with tailor and spotted mackerel rounding them up. Just look for the birds working. Whiting and bream are in the gutters along the beaches. OFFSHORE: The Blinker is the hot spot for kingies on jigged lures and mixed reef f sh at dusk. Check Barwon Banks for bigger snapper, pearl perch and rosy job f sh. A game f shing competition at the end of November produced 42 black marlin, so it should be a great summer for billf sh. FRESHWATER: Most impoundments are f ring for golden perch. Smaller dams like Cooloolabin and Lake McDonald are having a good run of bass, jew and Mary River cod.
