f history gives us nothing else, it has certainly left us with some memorable quotes. It’s with this in mind that we start off 2013 looking back and remembering 2012 through the eyes – or more specif cally the words – of the people who made an impact in the past 12 months. In this week’s cover story, on page 10, we’ve taken a look at those people who made the news and the things they said. Will these quotes stack up in years to come? Only time will tell, but for now we offer you a few titbits from the archives to get the 2013 ball rolling. Over in agenda on page 26 we are also in a reflective mood, pondering the people and the stories that engaged the nation last year. And in national news, which starts on page 21, we remember those Australians who will

never see 2013, who have passed away and left the country less rich as a result. But then it is time to look forward. It is a new year after all, and new years mean new plans, goals and dreams. So what was your resolution for this year? Get fit and healthy, find a new job, travel, or buy your first home? If you’ve decided that 2013 is the time you are finally jumping on that property ladder, our My Property Preview story, on page 38 is for you. There is more than one way of fulfilling that dream of home ownership, and Jarna Baudinette tells you how. We have some recipes that will serve as an antidote to all the festive fare we’ve enjoyed (that’s in palate on page 32), some fashionable summery offerings for the hot months ahead (that’s in style on page 30) and news from the motoring world (on page 34).

AAP Senior Correspondent Doug Conway reviews Australia’s year in the words of those who made the news. IMAGES AAP
Awards “When I saw the boys running towards me in rugby league, I ran the other way and never looked back. This eventually led to the opening of an envelope in Los Angeles and winning an Oscar.” Australian of the Year Geoffrey Rush on how school sport turned him towards a successful career in acting. “A man self ess in the face of threat, courageous in the face of terror, generous in the face of suffering and humble in the face of an honour bestowed.” Governor General Quentin Bryce presents Corporal Daniel Keighran with the Victoria Cross. “She wasn’t impressed to start with.” Corporal Keighran (pictured) on his wife’s reaction to finding out he had braved enemy fire in Afghanistan. e above anything “What jumped out to me was the importance, by a million miles, of the well-being of my children.” Aussie Home Loans founder and father-of-two John Symond after he was named Australian Father of the Year. “The work has to be good, which knocks out about 95 per cent of them.” Steve Peters, head storeman of the NSW Art Gallery, on picking the Archibald Packing Room Prize.
Courts and crime “It is corruption on a scale probably unexceeded since the days of the Rum Corps.” Geoffrey Watson SC, counsel assisting a corruption inquiry involving former NSW Labor ministers. “I am so sorry for your loss. Time does not remove the pain and sadness of the death of a child.” Deputy Northern Territory Coroner Elizabeth Morris delivers a finding sought for decades by Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton and her former husband Michael – that a dingo killed their baby Azaria in 1980. “Australia’s most wanted man is behind bars.” NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione (pictured) announces the capture of Malcolm Naden after seven years on the run. Social issues “Speak English or die.” A bus passenger verbally abuses a young French woman on a Melbourne bus, in a tirade that went viral after it was posted on YouTube. “The naked negativity, the carping criticism, the assassination of character that now seems to pass for normal behaviour is a scourge both within and between parties.” The United Church’s Reverend Brian Brown reflects on politics in his 2012 Easter message. “The US risks dragging us all into a dark, repressive world in which journalists live under fear of prosecution.” WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange during a rare public appearance on the balcony of the embassy of Ecuador in London. “The closest person to a saint, frankly, in my view.” Network Ten chairman Lachlan Murdoch on the death of his grandmother, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch (both pictured), one of Australia’s great philanthropists.
Afghanistan “The news of every loss is as hard as news of the f rst loss.” Prime Minister Julia Gillard mourns the loss of the 39th Australian soldier to die in Afghanistan. “The f ve soldiers who died in Afghanistan this week died unnecessarily and Howard, Rudd and Gillard all have blood on their hands.” Independent MP Andrew Wilkie (pictured) blames three prime ministers for military casualties.

“I won’t stand by and let others claim that the man I love, and the father my children adore, has some agenda against women.” Opposition Leader Tony Abbott’s wife, Margie (pictured), stands by her man. “If he wants to know what misogyny looks like in modern Australia … he needs a mirror.” Julia Gillard to Tony Abbott in parliament.
“They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, so hopefully I’ll come out of this a better swimmer but most of all a better person.” Humbled world champion James Magnussen after he had to settle for silver in the men’s 100-metre freestyle.
“I did nothing wrong.” Prime Minister Julia Gillard on criticisms of her actions as a lawyer for AWU officials in the 1990s.

I think it’s a hopeless game.” Gold Coast United owner Clive Palmer slams the A-League before sacking the team’s coach. “It was all just meant to be a bit of fun.” Nick D’Arcy apologises for photos of him and fellow swimmer Kenrick Monk posing with guns in the United States.
“A complete imbecile, an idiot, a stooge, a sexist pig, a liar, and his sister has said he’s a crook and rotten to the core.” Julia Gillard describes former AWU union official Ralph Blewitt, “according to people who know him”. “The old man recently died a few weeks ago of shame. To think that he has a daughter who told lies every time she stood for parliament.” Broadcaster Alan Jones’ controversial comment following the death of Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s father. “This Ashby seems more rehearsed than a kabuki actor.” Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr on allegations against parliamentary Speaker Peter Slipper by his former staffer James Ashby.

“It is time to publicly acknowledge that there have been some in our party’s ranks with neither political principles to defend nor moral convictions to uphold.” Labor veteran John Faulkner on the party’s factional wars.
“I have all the bad things about having money and none of the good things.” Rinehart’s son John Hancock.
“A tool of the US government and Rockefeller.” Billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmer on the Australian Greens.
“If you’re jealous of those with more money, don’t just sit there and complain. Spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working.” Gina Rinehart issues a stern rebuke to Australians.
“It just goes to show you don’t have to be smart to be rich.” Greens MP Adam Bandt responds. continued over >

CALOUNDRA SCORES TOUGH MUDDER WORDS Sam Walker
Locals Leanne and Geoff Peters and their son Daniel (centre) competing in the Sydney Tough Mudder event.
W
hile Tough Mudder contestants are getting down and dirty this year, Coast businesses are looking forward to cleaning up. Caloundra will play host to one of the world’s biggest and most gruelling endurance events in August and with 40,000 participants predicted to enter, it is expected to be an economic coup for the entire region. Caloundra Chamber of Commerce president Michael Shadforth says it is an event to rival
the Noosa triathlon and has the potential to attract entrants from across Australia and the globe. While it is great for tourism, Shadforth says the flow-on effect for all businesses is significant. “It’s a massive boost for our economy where traditionally there would be nothing happening,” he says. “Retailers particularly find it hard to survive through winter.” The event has been bookended with the Sunshine Coast Marathon the following weekend. Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Tourism and Events chair Bill Darby says the event, which has taken the world by storm since its origins in 2010, is expected to be bigger than last year’s Sydney and Philip Island events. “The international profiling the Sunshine Coast is going to get would have a value into the millions,” says Darby. The Sunshine Coast event was secured thanks to a collaboration between Sunshine Coast Council,

Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, Shadforths Civil Contracting, Stockland and local businesses. About 10,000 people had signed up as contestants before knowing the event location. Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson says the region has captured a piece of one of the fastest growing events on the planet and he wants local businesses and event organisers to take advantage of the opportunity. QUICK FACTS When: August 17 and 18, 2013 Where: Pierce Avenue, Caloundra – between Sunshine Coast Industrial park and Caloundra South. Event details: Average course length – 16 to 20 kilometres. Number of obstacles – 20 to 25. Average time to complete – 3.5 hours. Completion rate of participants to date – 78 per cent (individual), 80 per cent (team members). Average age of participants: 29. To register: toughmudder.com.au
If your New Year’s resolution is to shed a few Christmas kilos and get f t, then Kawana Parkrun could be just what you need. The weekly five-kilometre run pits you against yourself and the time clock, and event director Kelly Daly says it averages about 45 participants every Saturday. ”It’s social and it’s free and you get out there and be active,” Daly says. The event is open to all ages and abilities and has attracted participants from primary school age to 80-year-olds. The run kicks off from the car park at Kawana Surf Life Saving Club at 7am on Saturday mornings. Don’t plan to rush off straight away – participants usually catch up for a coffee at the club after the run. Visit parkrun.com.au/kawana for more information and to register.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES As we head into 2013, Doug Conway and Rashida Yosufzai remember some influential Australians who passed away in 2012. Diana Bliss, 57, wife of businessman Alan Bond. January 28. Bliss stood by her husband through his bankruptcy in 1992 and when he was sentenced to four years jail for fraud in 1997 in one of the biggest corporate collapses in Australian history. The successful theatre producer had been suffering a depressive illness months before she was found dead at the couple’s luxury beachside home in Perth. Her 73-year-old husband later wrote that the illness “would not let her see the beauty of the world”.
Margaret Whitlam, 92, f rst lady. March 17. Hailed as a feminist icon of the 1970s, Whitlam was widely recognised as one of the few prime ministerial wives to touch the Australian people independently of their husbands. The Bondi native married Gough Whitlam, later to be Labor PM in 1972, just six weeks before he was called up by the RAAF for service in WWII. Margaret Whitlam died one month short of celebrating her 70th wedding anniversary with Gough, who called her “the love of my life”.
Jim Stynes, 45, AFL player. March 20. The skinny Irish teenager came to Australia as an experiment and became the best player in the AFL. By the time he won the Brownlow Medal in 1991, the only winner to have been brought up outside Australia, Stynes was well into his remarkable streak of 244 consecutive games, an AFL record. The streak eventually ended in 1998 and Stynes retired after 264 games. In July 2009 he announced that he had been diagnosed with brain cancer. Lincoln Hall, 56, mountaineer. March 20. The Canberra-born climber cheated death in 2006, when he was found delirious and frostbitten near the peak of Mount Everest, a day after being left for continued over>

Ian Turpie, 68, game show host. March 11. The Melbourne-born singer, actor, radio, stage and TV performer was best-known by most Australians for telling them to “come on down”, as the host of
TV game show The New Price is Right. Brother Alan Turpie likened Turpie’s life to a cricket innings: “It wasn’t a long, boring century. It was a quickfire 68 and a few flashy fours and some great sixes.”

<from previous page dead. Asbestos disease killed him six years later as he succumbed to mesothelioma contracted when he helped his father build cubbyhouses as a child. Jimmy Little, 75, singer. April 2. James Oswald Little was signed to Festival Records in 1956 but did not break into the top 10 until his hit Danny Boy four years later. He was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame in 1999 and later named a National Living Treasure. Murray Rose, 73, swimmer. April 15. English-born Rose learned to swim at the age of five in Redleaf Pool in Sydney’s Double Bay. Twelve years later, he won three gold medals at the peak of his power at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. At one stage he held the world records for 400 metres, 800 metres and 1500 metres freestyle. Greg Ham, 58, musician. April 19. At their peak, Ham’s Men at Work became the first Australian band to have a number one album and single in both the US and the UK. But friends said Ham spiralled into depression and anxiety following a court’s finding in 2010 that his flute riff in the band’s smash hit Down Under was copied from the children’s song Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree. He was found dead in his Melbourne home.

Don Ritchie, 86, Angel of The Gap. May 13. The 85-year-old lived just metres from Sydney’s notorious Watsons Bay cliff and for half a century helped hundreds of people reconsider ending their lives. “He was a fisher of men. He threw his line out to terrified people whose lives were shattered and gradually brought them to shore,” said friend and priest Father Tony Doherty. Robin Gibb, 62, singer, musician. May 20. Known for scaling the heights of the pop world with the Bee Gees, Gibb later survived a rail crash in south-east London that killed 49 people in the ’70s, and lost younger brother Andy to cocaine addiction in the ’80s. Gibb died after a lengthy battle with cancer. DJ Paul Gambaccini said, “Everyone should be aware that the Bee Gees are second only to Lennon and McCartney as the most successful songwriting unit in British popular music.” Barbara Holborow, 81, NSW children’s magistrate. May 23. Holborow was a magistrate, author and foster mum to eight children, but her no-nonsense approach and passionate pursuit of the rights of young people in the legal system earned her a reputation as “the children’s champion”. Holborow helped set up free legal aid for children, a special court for those suffering from neglect and abuse, and a special jail for first-time offenders aged 18 to 25.
John Treloar, 84, athlete. July 23. Treloar competed at the 1948 London and 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he became the first Australian man to qualify for an Olympic 100-yard final. He finished sixth, just 0.1 seconds behind the winner, in one of the closest blanket finishes in Olympic history. His son, John Treloar jnr, informed Australia of his father’s death by simply stating: “Dad passed away exactly as he ran. Quickly.” Robert Hughes, 74, art critic. August 6. The Australian-born writer, whom The New York Times once proclaimed the world’s most famous art critic, moved to New York after he was headhunted by Time magazine in 1970 to be its art critic. Hughes’ relationship with Australia was often strained. “You can tow Australia out to sea and sink it for all I care,” he once said. He later recanted the statement and objected to his reputation as a racist and elitist bully: “I don’t mind being an elitist bully, but I do mind being a racist.” John Gillard, 83, father of Prime Minister Julia Gillard. September 8. A supporter of the union movement, John Gillard grew up in a coal mining village in Wales and left school at 14. He worked as a psychiatric nurse in South Australia after he moved his young family to Adelaide in 1966. Prime Minister Julia Gillard was in Vladivostok, Russia, for the APEC summit when

Bryce Courtenay, 79, author. November 22. The South African-born author became Australia’s biggest-selling novelist of the past 20 years, selling more than 20 million books worldwide. The former advertising creative wrote his first and most successful novel, The Power of One, late at age 56. His output was commended by colleagues and publishers alike, penning and delivering at least one book a year. Fellow Australian author Fiona McIntosh said he was “a man of the people.
Tony Greig, 66, Test cricket captain turned commentator. December 29. The man who turned his back on cricket’s establishment to help fashion World Series Cricket was diagnosed with lung cancer in October, but a heart attack ended his life late last year. Greig was born in South Africa in 1946 and played his first Test match for England – qualifying thanks to his Scottish parentage – in 1972. In 1977 he captained England in the acclaimed Centenary Test against Australia. Days later he was recruited by Kerry Packer, and Greig’s decadeslong commentary career began soon after. Friend and colleague Bill Lawry said, “He has become a great Australian, a nationalised Australian, a proud Australian and a wonderful ambassador for the game of cricket. AAP

PREVIEW AAP Senior Correspondent Doug Conway reviews the stories that dominated Australia in 2012. IMAGES AAP
THE YEAR IN NEWS [ GILLARD PREVAILS ] Julia Gillard comfortably fended off a leadership challenge from the man she deposed as prime minister, defeating Kevin Rudd 71-31 in a Labor caucus ballot. Her minority government survived despite the resignation of Liberal renegade Peter Slipper as speaker over sexual harassment allegations and the enforced move of embattled former union boss Craig Thomson to the crossbenches. She succeeded in passing controversial legislation introducing both a carbon price and a new mining tax, survived a cabinet revolt over Palestine’s UN status and flatly denied any wrongdoing as a young industrial lawyer in setting up a union slush fund for a former boyfriend. Australia’s first female prime minister proved less unpopular in the polls than Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, whom she painted as a sexist and misogynist. But her biggest challenge remains, as an election year looms with her unpopular government still mired in election-losing territory. [ ECONOMIC STRENGTH ] Australia’s economy remained one of the best-performing in the developed world, having sidestepped the GFC, which crash-tackled many other nations. The economy grew by 3.7 per cent in the year to June, half as fast as China’s, easing back to 3.1 per cent later in the year. The resources boom remained the driving force. Although commodity prices
fell by 20 per cent against their peak in mid-2011, cutting sharply into revenues, the investment peak is yet to come. The Reserve Bank cut the cash rate by 1.25 percentage points during the year to three per cent to head off a slowdown, though commercial banks did not pass on the cuts in full to home owners with mortgages. Unemployment remained at a very low 5.2 per cent. The strong Aussie dollar hit 108 US cents before settling back around 104, still above dollar-fordollar parity. It also hit historic highs of 86 euro cents, and remained above 80. [ RINEHART’S RISE ] The resources boom propelled mining heiress Gina Rinehart to a $29 billion fortune, making her not only Australia’s but the world’s richest woman. Her wealth ballooned by an unparalleled $18.87 billion in one year, according to BRW magazine’s annual rich list, meaning she acquired a million dollars every half hour, though falling commodity prices have since pared back her fortune. She bought 13 per cent of Fairfax Media, agitated for a board seat, and became embroiled in a so-called “class war” with federal Treasurer Wayne Swan. She was also at the centre of a bitter family squabble, failing in a bid to dismiss court proceedings after her three eldest children sought to oust her as trustee of the multimillion-dollar family trust.

[ ASIAN POWER ] Australia fl exed its muscles as an Asia-Pacific power, winning a UN Security Council seat and the right to host the powerful G20 leaders summit in 2014. Barack Obama’s re-election as US president maintained the momentum of America’s pivot to Asia, which includes rotating US troops through Darwin, and visiting Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hosed down suggestions that the US military alliance could harm Australia’s relations with key trading giant China. Australia welcomed Prince Charles and his wife Camilla in the Queen’s diamond jubilee year, but a Gillard Government white paper made it clear Australia’s future lies in Asia. [ ASSANGE’S ASYLUM ] WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been holed up in Ecuador’s London embassy since mid-August after being granted asylum in his bid to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faces questioning over alleged rape and sexual assault. The stalemate came after Britain refused to allow the 41-year-old Australian safe passage out of the country. Assange denies the allegations against him and claims he could eventually be passed from Sweden to the United States for prosecution over his website’s publication of hundreds of thousands of classified US documents. [ WAR LOSSES ] The death toll in Australia’s 10-year engagement in Afghanistan jumped to 39, with half of those occurring in the past two years. The deaths of five soldiers in one day was the nation’s biggest combat loss in a 24-hour period since the Battle of Long Tan
in Vietnam 46 years earlier. Australian combat troops are to quit Afghanistan in 2014, and for many Australians the end can’t come quickly enough. [ CHAMBERLAINS VINDICATED ] Thirtytwo years, four inquests and one royal commission after Lindy Chamberlain screamed, “a dingo has got my baby” in a Northern Territory camping ground, one of Australia’s most infamous travesties of justice was officially corrected on a death certificate. A dingo killed nine-month-old Azaria after all, but Lindy spent three years behind bars before she was exonerated, and gave birth to her fourth child in jail. Her former husband Michael said: “If you know you are right, never give up … even when it seems to be a mission impossible.” [ PATEL’S RETRIAL ] Former Bundaberg surgeon Jayant Patel will be tried again early next year for the manslaughter of 75-year-old Mervyn Morris after the High Court ruled there had been a miscarriage of justice during his 2010 trial. Patel, who was released on bail, had been serving a seven-year jail sentence. The Indian-born Patel will also be retried separately for the manslaughter of 77-year-old Gerry Kemps and 46-year-old James Phillips, and for causing grievous bodily harm to 62-year-old Ian Rodney Vowles. The charges relate
to his time at Bundaberg Base Hospital between 2003 and 2005. [ ASYLUM SEEKERS ] Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s answer to the hot-button political issue of asylum seekers was to return to a Howard-era Pacific Solution to deter boat people. More than 7000, however, ventured onto the high seas even after she announced the resumption of offshore processing in Nauru and Manus Island, PNG. The Manus base was contentious because island residents claimed they were not being adequately compensated. And a damning Amnesty International report accused the Federal Government of inflicting a “crisis of cruelty” on asylum seekers detained on Nauru, describing the island’s camp as “completely unacceptable”. [ ABUSE INQUIRY ] Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s decision to establish a royal commission into child sexual abuse received near-universal support – a record 95 per cent backing in one poll, and the approval of all political parties, state and federal. But Sydney’s Catholic Archbishop George Pell said priests hearing admissions of paedophilia in the confession box should not be required to report it to authorities, a stance sharply at odds with the views of other Catholics, including Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell. The royal commission will enquire not only into churches but all institutions, including state-run bodies, sporting clubs and organisations like the Scouts. AAP

2013 LOOKING GOOD FOR INVESTORS
Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim
T
he good thing about looking forward to the next 12 months is that nobody will dig up this article in December 2013 and review how accurate my predictions were. After a volatile year, the market has calmed down somewhat and volatility is low. There are certainly reasons to be cautiously optimistic. Firstly, central banks around the world have responded quite strongly to the debt crisis. The European Central Bank’s funding injection, bond buying program programme, m and a determination to avoid the break-up o of the Eurozone seem to point
towards a receding risk of a blow up from Europe. Low inflation and continued anaemic growth should see interest rates low for some time. Once the fiscal cliff is sorted out, the US should continue to grow, albeit slowly. We expect the housing recovery to continue and capital spending to rebound. It also appears the fears of a China hard landing have been misguided. In fact growth at around 7.5 per cent is still very strong. Other emerging markets should also contribute well towards global growth. So on balance, it doesn’t appear we are heading towards the end of the financial world. Locally, growth is expected to be quite low, and one would assume with the heat being taken out of the mining sector that unemployment may creep up. As a result, we should see further interest rate reductions, providing a boost for the local sharemarket as income hungry investors reduce cash exposures and increase exposure to risk assets. The result should be a reasonable year of returns for the sharemarket. I wouldn’t be
expecting pre-GFC type returns, but a solid year is quite possible. I also think the Australian dollar must fall at some stage. With the resources sector slowing, our currency is being propped up only by the almost zero rates offshore. As our rates fall, surely the little Aussie battler must as well. Low interest rates should also support the local housing market, although significant capital gains should not be expected. For this to occur, incomes need to rise (unlikely) and banks have to loosen lending policies (also unlikely). Of course, all this could turn on its head if European debt problems re-emerge, US growth doesn’t follow through, China contracts further, or Australian unemployment rises to such a level that we start to see mass mortgage defaults. There are many risks, but in balance we do see sufficient positives to be encouraging for investors. Mark Davidson is an Authorised representative (no 427049) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. Small businesses call for a cut in red tape Re Red ed tape is eroding co competitiveness om and the Australian Ta Tax ax Off ce (ATO) tops the list of bur b bureaucracies for generating tro troublesome regulatory hurdles, a ssurvey has found. The T ATO leads the NSW Business Chamber’s Ch b ’ fifth annual Red Tape Survey, followed by NSW local governments, safety regulators, Fair Work Australia and Centrelink. “I’m not surprised the ATO continues to be the bane of business operators – it interacts
with nearly every business in Australia in some fashion, and almost three quarters of respondents believe interacting with it is complex and time consuming,” says Stephen Cartwright, the chamber’s CEO. More than half those surveyed said their ability to grow their business had been hampered by regulatory requirements. Cartwright says small businesses employ more than seven million Australians. “Red tape and the cost of regulation is on the rise and that is eating away at our national competitiveness, our ability
to innovate and improve productivity, and very importantly, the chance to grow our businesses and employ more people,” he says. “I’m concerned to hear businesses are being asked to comply with regulations that appear to make no sense, or have become obsolete and meaningless,” he says. “Government is quick to add new regulations but painfully slow and reluctant in eliminating old and burdensome red tape.” The Federal Government has asked the Productivity Commission to investigate the red tape burden on small business. PALM TREES PROTECTED The relocation of six mature palm trees has got the Sunshine Coast University Hospital’s landscaping plans off to an early start. The livistona palms were relocated from a cleared Energex easement opposite the hospital site and replanted to enhance final landscaping. They are among 29 palms on the easement that will eventually be transplanted on the hospital site. Lend Lease project director SCUH Mark Buckle says Lend Lease was keen to relocate some of the mature palms for conservation purposes. “We consider every effort should be made to try to relocate some of these mature palms to assist with the conservation of this important species,” Buckle says. The palms selected for relocation

are generally in excess of three metres trunk height, with an adequately sized root-ball mass to give the palms stability, and have, through their height, received more sun hardening than smaller palms. Buckle says livistona palms had already been identified among the local vegetation to be used in the hospital’s landscaping plans. “Although the palms will only need to travel between 65 metres and one kilometre from their original location and will only be out of the ground for a short period of time, the transfer can be difficult, which is why we’re working with local arborist Bill Wilcock and his company Nullarbor Prevention to give the palms the best chance of survival in their new home,” he says.

5 HEALTHY HIGH-PROTEIN SNACKS TO CURB YOUR HUNGER
I
f you’ve resolved to drop a few kilos or just improve your diet this year, your efforts can be quickly sabotaged with the wrong snacks. It’s not hard to plan healthy main meals, but you can easily get caught off guard if hunger
strikes between meals and all you can lay your hands on is some chocolate or a packet or chips. Try stocking up on these healthy snacks, which will give you a protein hit to keep you going until your next meal.
Hummus: High in
Apple slices with nut butter: Buy some natural peanut
protein and big on taste, hummus with some carrot or celery sticks, or flatbread, makes a perfect snack. It’s easy to make your own if you want to avoid the preservatives and salt, otherwise stock up on some pots of hummus from the health food store.
butter from your health food store (made with crushed peanuts and nothing else), or some organic hazelnut, cashew or macadamia butter. Slather onto apple slices.
Mini Frittatas Healthy ‘Nutella’:
Buy a good-quality natural yoghurt with no added sugar (which destroys the good bacteria). Mix in a teaspoon of honey and a tablespoon of chia seeds (for protein). It’s sweet and smooth with a bit of crunch, and you’ll also get a dose of probiotics from the yoghurt.

READY FOR DAKAR
A
fter some last-minute sand driving – and digging – practice, veteran Australian off-road racer Bruce Garland is ready for the 2013 Dakar Rally. Garland and long-time co-driver Harry Suzuki have spent a day on the sand dunes at Stockton Beach in NSW honing their skills in readiness for some of the challenges the world’s most famous desert race will throw at them. Their excavating skills could be needed if they get bogged in the kilometres of ‘fesh-fesh’ – the South American equivalent of bulldust – that is part of the route, and ready to trap competitors, along with acres of
huge sand dunes, one of which is nearly 1.4-kilometres tall. The Isuzu Motorsports team leaves Sydney for South America on December 27 to do final preparations – including some altitude training – before the two-week event kicks off in Peru tomorrow. The 2012 Isuzu D-MAX built in Garland’s Sydney workshop was shipped two months ago. “After three previous runs at this event, we know what to expect in terms of heat and altitude, but you can never be too careful,” Garland says. “We have been specifically training for both, and we will do some more work when we get there. We’ve also ordered some oxygen
Bruce Garland and Harry Suzuki bottles. The event takes us up to nearly 5000 metres, much higher than the previous races, and for a longer period of time. If you’re not properly prepared for those conditions, things can get pretty nasty, pretty quickly.” A total of 459 vehicles (bikes, quads, cars and trucks), representing a new record of 53 different countries, will be on the start line for the 35th running of the event.
It’s the fifth to take place on the South American continent, which has hosted the event since 2009. The switch was made after terrorist threats cancelled the 2008 event in its traditional home of Africa. The 2013 Dakar Rally ends in Santiago, Chile, on January 20 after travelling more than 8000 kilometres. Last year just 249 of the 443 vehicles that started the event finished it.
Volkswagen wins at World Forum for Ethics The Volkswagen Group has received an award for its activities in the f eld of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The World Forum for Ethics in Business honoured the achievements of the group with the Ethics in Business Award 2012 in the category ‘Outstanding Corporation’. The board of directors of the forum honoured the efforts of Volkswagen in the fields of environmental management and corporate social responsibility. Also taken into account was the inclusion of Volkswagen in the Dow Jones Sustainability World
index and its third place in the Sustainalytics DAX 30 rating. The World Forum for Ethics says Volkswagen showed leadership in the assumption of corporate social responsibility and the implementation of outstanding and innovative projects. The car maker was also recognised for making “a positive contribution to society in many areas and set an example of universal values such as integrity, responsibility and respect for people and the environment through its various environmental and health projects”.

CLASSIC ALFAS AUCTIONED
Car of the Year 2012
Alfa Romeo enthusiasts will be f ocking to the Shannons Sydney Summer Classic Auction on February 4 when sought-after models go under the hammer with no reserve prices. Coming from a private collection to make room for more acquisitions, the quartet of four-cylinder Alfas from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s provide a unique opportunity to acquire an Italian sporting classic. The prima Alfa of the collection is a 1972 GTV 2000 Coupe that was in the hands of its former owner for 25 years. Shannons is quoting a guiding range of $20,000 to $25,000. Sharing a similar, but earlier Type 105 ‘stepnose’ body shape is a 1969 GT 1300 Junior Coupe (pictured), which is expected to bring $15,000 to $20,000 at the auction. Although not in quite the same condition as the GTV 2000, this Junior is original and presents well,
A pair of almost identical sports cars have won the coveted Wheels Car of the Year award. The Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ shared the prize for 2012 after the magazine’s exhaustive judging process. The cars, produced as a collaboration between the two companies, are essentially the same, with minor variations. Wheels editor Stephen Corby says joint projects seldom produce anything remarkable. “The Toyota 86 has been claiming individual gongs from others but, with these being near identical twins, there was never any question that Wheels would keep them together,” Corby says. “To judge them separately would have been unfair, as well as unrealistic.” The Subaru and Toyota models
and with its five-speed manual gearbox delivers an authentic classic driving experience. Not as popular in its day, but now sought-after by Alfa Romeo enthusiasts, is a nicely restored four-door 1971 Giulia 1300 Super Sedan of the type made famous in the film The Italian Job as they pursued the rogue Minis through Rome. Potential buyers will need to bring between $14,000 and $18,000 to drive away in this one. There is also a 1975 2000 Spider with no reserve up for auction.
won praise from the judges for their performance and handling and as great value for money. With the Toyota 86 selling from $29,990, they considered it the best driver’s car for the money available in Australia. “Never before has pure driving pleasure been so accessible,” Corby says. The Subaru is priced slightly higher than its Toyota twin, but includes servicing for three years. Toyota initiated the joint project and designed the coupe while Subaru provided the engine and suspension technology and took charge of the engineering. The Volkswagen Up and the Holden Volt missed out on the prize.

BUYING INTO

t’s always said that times are changing, but the future, but property is a long-term for many young Australians the great dream investment rather than a get-rich-quick scheme, of home ownership remains intact. When we and you’ll need to factor in the potential for think of the future, a lot of us hope for living costs and family expenses to rise. The golden rule for Brenden Brial is owner-manager of Bank of new buyers is to make sure you don’t overreach Queensland Mooloolaba and Chancellor Park, with your first property. If you purchase wisely and says while most people go down the track of your investment should continue to grow into living in the home first and then renting it out, M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

Go through what you can afford and then weigh up whether or not you’re better off living in the property or renting it out Brenden Brial
there are a small number who choose to invest straight off the bat. “I’d say we’ve seen probably about half a dozen this year,” Brial says. These are usually young people who crave a lifestyle they couldn’t afford in loan repayments: “I see a lot of people doing that in later years too, not necessarily the first-home buyers,” he says. “There are a lot of people who subscribe to the fact you can go and get a penthouse apartment and pay $650 a week in rent for it, whereas if you want to buy that the loan repayments would cost you $1500.” While a penthouse is a little ambitious for the average first-time buyer, you may find your current beachside unit or contemporary threebedroom rental suits your desired lifestyle more than an entry-level home in Nambour or Caloundra West (the Coast’s most affordable suburbs). If this is the case, Brial says you may be better off buying an investment property as your first home – as long as the rental income you would receive exceeds the rent you pay (which it probably will if you live in a share house). And remember your borrowing capacity as an investor will be higher than that of an owner-occupier. “This is because we also take into account the rental income, and also the negative-gearing aspect,” he says. “If your name is on a lease and you’re paying $200 a week rent, and getting $500 a week in from your investment, you’re going to be financially better off. That, together with the negative-gearing aspect, would mean that you would be able to borrow more.” Many buyers sit on their first property for a few years, pay down some of the debt and then use the equity they have generated to build a property portfolio. However, Brial cautions potential buyers against jumping into their first
investment without examining all the financial and tax implications – something young people are often inexperienced with, unless they have recently finished an accounting degree. He says buying an investment first can definitely be a good financial stepping stone, “depending on how you do it” – mainly if you are looking to accumulate a number of investment properties in the future. However, if you are planning to move straight onto purchasing a home to live in, your investment may leave you with a higher tax liability, as the interest paid on a loan for a principal place of residence isn’t tax deductible, whereas on an investment loan it is. “You end up with a higher debt on the owneroccupied residence, which isn’t as tax deductible,” Brial says. “In that case, you would have been better off to spend that time paying down the debt on your place of residence first, rather than the investment.” However, if you don’t want to move from your current rental, or don’t feel settled enough in your career or personal life to consider buying a long-term home, an investment might be the way to go. “Being in the market is better than not being in the market at all,” Brial says. “If you can go and live with two or three friends and rent, you’re going to live in a place that’s much nicer than something you could afford to buy.” His advice for first-time buyers is to get as much information as you can, and then sit down with your lender to go over each option in detail. “Go through what you can afford and then weigh up whether or not you’re better off living in the property or renting it out,” he says. “Because you won’t know until you’ve sat down and gone through all the numbers.”
WHAT ABOUT THE FIRST-HOME BUYER GRANT? The State Government’s f rst-home owner grant gives $7000 to f rst-time buyers purchasing an existing home, and $15,000 to those building or buying a brand-new home. To be eligible for the grant you must move into the property within 12 months of purchasing it and live there for six consecutive months. You can’t use the grant for an investment property, but if you’ve held an interest in a property since July 1, 2000 and have never lived in the property, you can still claim the grant if you buy a personal place of residence in the future. (If you held any interest in any residential property before July 1, 2000 you won’t be eligible for the grant.)

TOP TIPS FOR YOUNG BUYERS • Start saving money, now. Many people increase their discretionary spending as their income increases, rather than putting aside extra cash for the future. Even if you’re at the very beginning of your working career, devise a savings plan and get used to following it, so you are in a much better position to deal with increased living costs and expenses as they arise. • Buying an investment property is different to buying a home to live in, as you’re not choosing the home based on whether you personally want to live there. You need to consider the location, property style and inclusions prospective tenants will be looking for, and how much ongoing maintenance you will be willing to pay for. If you don’t know much about property, speak to an investment specialist or experienced local property manager about what to look for. • No matter how close you are to the person, don’t jump into buying a property with a partner or friend without f rst discussing the f nancial implications and responsibilities. Keep records of important conversations and decisions to show you’re all in agreement. This may seem like overkill, but it can save misunderstandings and lots of unnecessary stress further down the track.

Justen Tillman says… Being a real estate agent myself, I have a very high standard when it comes to my investment properties being managed. After moving away from the area, and knowing Amber and her team at RE/MAX in Buderim, I had no hesitation in leaving my properties in their more than capable hands. Amber and her team set a standard that is genuinely “Above the Crowd” and I would highly recommend them to any property investor who wants their valua valuable asset to be professionally managed. erty Prop ent gem a n a M

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Unless you were one of the fortunate few who scored Double Island, you are no doubt sick of these onshore winds! The reports coming down from DI are that epic sessions were had by all who made the run up. The good news is the swell is hanging around and will increase. The bad news is that a strong wind will be attached to it so Mooloolaba, Alex, Noosa, Double Island and Point Cartwright will be the best bets. If you have time, a trip to Agnes Waters might pay dividends. Enjoy your new toys and should you manage to snap a board, remember your story will last forever – unlike your board – so make up a good one!
FISHING REPORT
with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Lure castings are working snags up in Petrie and Coolum creeks, returning mangrove jack, bream and f athead. Mud crabs are around Bli Bli islands. Get whiting on yabbies and worms at Cotton Tree with trevally at Twin waters. SURF: Find tailor along Maroochy Beach in the early morning using pillies and any shiny lure. A few choppers and bream will be at Pincushion just after dark using froggies and baby blue pilchards. OFFSHORE: Spotted and Spanish mackeral are providing a challenge to hook up from Caloundra to Noosa with plenty of opposition from other boats. There are plenty of bait schools moving around and snapper have been reported at the Barwon Banks with the usual varieties of reef f sh on offer. FRESHWATER: Reports are coming in thick and fast from Somerset, Bjelke-Petersen and Boondooma of quality catches of golden perch, bass, jew and red claw. Local dams of Borumba, Baroon Pocket and Lake McDonald are returning their share of the same. Don’t forget your freshwater licence for the dams and lakes that are part of the government’s stocked impoundments scheme.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 With three planets stirring up your travel and learning zone, it’s time to study a topic – or language – that has always fascinated you. Plan an adventurous trip away for some time soon.
GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Don’t accept things at face value. With so many planets in your research zone, look beneath the surface – and do some background briefing – to discover what’s really going on.
CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 You’ll make headway today by keeping your eyes and ears open. Stay on top of facts and leave fantasy for the movies. Don’t sign on the dotted line – be patient and wait.
LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 With plenty of planetary activity in your wellbeing zone, it’s time to take a close look at your health and fitness levels. And are you up-to-date with all your medical checks?
VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 When it comes to a rickety relationship with a family member, don’t keep interacting – and criticizing – in the same old way. A complimentary approach reaps rewards.
LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 This weekend is wonderful for romance, as the moon moves through your sign. Attached Librans – it’s time to shake up a stale relationship. Singles – love and learning are linked.
SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Scorpios can be very stubborn but relationships will run smoothly if you compromise with others. The more self-righteous you are, the more difficult the weekend will be.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Make the most of Venus being in your sign. It’s the perfect weekend to pamper yourself with a massage, facial, new clothes or a hot new hair style. Singles – feel free to flirt up a storm.
CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 With Saturn in your wishes zone, have you formulated your goals for the future? Be inspired by birthday great Carl Sandburg: “Nothing happens unless first a dream.”
AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 With fiery Mars in your sign, learn to control your unpredictable energy otherwise you’ll end up in hot water. Take time out on this busy weekend for some quiet contemplation.
PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 With three planets in your networking zone, it’s time to mix with the best of them as you nurture friendships and make exciting new professional contacts. Fish are in the mood to talk.
