eah, I surf. Admittedly most of the waves I’ve caught have been easy little two-footers, down on the beginners beaches such as Happy Valley, but I own a board, and a you-beaut wetsuit, and I’ve had a quite a few scrapes and spills – my partner calls it ‘paying your dues’ – so I guess I can call myself a surfer. I’m always reluctant to admit to it though, whenever anyone asks if I surf, and not because I’m embarrassed to own up to this incredibly fun pastime, but because I don’t feel I’m good enough, and after spending some time watching talented athletes like Julian Wilson, Stephanie Gilmore and the ageless Kelly Slater in action, I probably never will. This week’s cover story celebrates the Sunshine Coast locals who are making an impact on the global surfing scene. It’s a hard nut to crack – the pro surfing tour is limited,

or a region with (let’s be honest here) pretty average surf, the Sunshine Coast has produced its fair share of top-quality surfers. While our list of homegrown stars includes current world champion Joel Parkinson (who was born in Nambour and relocated to the Gold Coast in his early teens) and big wave king Mark Visser, it is Coolum Beach’s Julian Wilson who is making headlines at the moment. Wilson, 24, turned professional as a junior at the tender age of 14. After winning a bagful of junior titles and establishing himself as a household name thanks to Quiksilver’s Young Guns III film, he joined the blue-chip Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour in 2011. He finished his first year on the tour in ninth place and was named Rookie of the Year along the way. In 2012 he went one better, also finishing ninth after winning three major events and cementing his reputation as one of the hottest young surfers on the tour. Wilson’s family is still based in Coolum Beach and although he doesn’t get home very often these days, he says the Coast is still one of his favourite places to surf. “I am based on the Sunshine Coast throughout the first three months of the year and try [to spend] as much time at home as I can during that time,” Wilson says. “After that it’s very little time. I have a place in California that I use as a home base as well, but I spend most of the year on the road. “Growing up my favourite place to surf was where I learned and where I would go and surf with all of my friends and family – Noosa. Now I have a few spots around the world that I really enjoy travelling to and surfing, like Indonesia, Tahiti, Hawaii, but still my favourite place to surf is home!” The ASP World Championship Tour is the pinnacle of the multibillion-dollar surfing industry. Surfing is one of our region’s most popular pastimes, and while winning the Rip Curl Pro in Portugal (as Wilson did in October) may be out of reach for the average Coast board rider, we do have plenty of homegrown junior talent hoping to follow in Wilson’s footsteps. Dave Lammin is a club development officer with

legends Surfing Queensland, a not-for-profit organisation founded by the State Government to nurture and develop surfing talent. He says the strong surfing culture on the Sunshine Coast means talented kids often get a taste for the sport at a very early age. “The majority of kids you’re seeing who have the talent have started very young, and they’ve started very young because their parents – either one or both parents – have surfed, and it’s just been part of their lifestyle from a very young age,” Lammin says. “These kids are getting on boards at five, six, seven years of age, and learning to stand up. And you’ll find a lot of those parents are very encouraging of their kids as well.” Wilson comes from a big surfing family, and says he attributes a lot of his success to his parents. However, Lammin says while family does play a crucial role in supporting young athletes, junior surfers looking to make it onto the professional circuit also need plenty of passion and dedication. “I think there are two types of athletes who do well,” Lammin says. “There are ones who are born gifted athletes – Julian I would class as one of those kids; he’s definitely got something that’s a cut above the rest. However, that needs to be backed up by dedication, training, motivation. Talent alone is not going to get them to the top of the world stage. “The second type are those who maybe haven’t got that innate edge like Julian, or like Kelly Slater, but who work extremely hard, and are so motivated to reach their goals that they actually achieve them through their hard work. So there’s definitely a mixture of the two.” While many people don’t think of surfing as a ‘sport’ – requiring commitment, training and the pressures of travel – it’s still a hard slog to the top. “That’s definitely a perception that has, I suppose, clouded the sport for many years,” Lammin says. “But if you look at surfing as an industry, it is a multibillion-dollar industry and we’re talking about a sport where sponsors demand the best – they want to see their athletes perform well, so in order to do that they’ve got to train.” Most junior development happens through local M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

Congratulations on your f rst ASP World Championship Tour win, at the Rip Curl Pro in Portugal, and also on winning the Nike US Open of Surf ng in California. These must have been career highlights for you, but what are some other key moments? “Thank you. Those two wins def nitely are career highlights for me now and I am quite satisf ed to come away from 2012 with three event wins [Wilson also won the Breaka Burleigh Pro last February]. To win a World Tour event [in Portugal] was a major goal of mine for the year, so that felt great! The win at the US Open is a huge one as well, because it’s a very prestigious event and one with a great amount of focus from the fans and the industry. “I have key moments that I look back on myself amongst the wins, but as far as what I would share with everyone, it’s that feeling when you hit the beach and you have beaten everyone else in the competition… and your friends and/or family are there to chair you up the beach, it’s incredible!”
board rider clubs, where young surfers get a taste for competition through monthly club rounds. From there they might enter a few local competitions, and the ones who show talent are soon recognised by Surfing Queensland and Surfing Australia, which has a state-of-the-art high-performance centre in northern NSW that Lammin describes as “the AIS of surfing”. While the Gold Coast is often considered the mecca of Australian surfing (it has produced current female world champ Stephanie Gilmore), Lammin says the Sunshine Coast has advantages of its own – our region has beaten the Gold Coast in the World Surfaris Coast of Origin event for the past two years, surprising many in the industry. Strangely, this may be due to the Sunshine Coast’s uneven surf, which makes homegrown athletes increasingly adaptable. Competitions are often held in conditions that are less than ideal, and because young Sunshine Coast athletes surf these conditions for the majority of the year, “they can step up”, Lammin says.
How important has your family been to your career? Do they travel with you on the tour? “It’s been a huge part of my career, but more so a huge part of who I am. My family has played varying active roles in my career and I am very thankful for that. “Right now my older brother Bart is my manager and is based in the USA working with a large sports agency over there, which is going well for me. I loved having my other brother Seb spend time with my on the road also. A lot of my success I attribute back to my parents.” What are your goals for 2013? “I keep most of my goals private, but obviously I want to improve on 2012. That would mean continuously being in events when f nals time comes around, and then to hopefully be in the mix and around the top of the pile come the end of the year!”
“When the conditions aren’t in their favour, they’re not looking and saying, ‘oh it’s terrible out there, I’m not going to be able to do anything’ – they can see things that other kids can’t see on a wave face, that they can do, because they’re so used to it,” he says. (Kelly Slater grew up surfing similar conditions in Florida and it’s worked out pretty well for him.) The Coast also benefits from a tight-knit young surfing community where kids encourage and support one another, which is positive even for those who don’t pursue surfing as a career. “It goes back to just that love of the sport,” Lammin says. “Billabong always used to have this slogan, ‘Only a surfer knows the feeling’. And you know, a lot of people thought it was so cliched, but it’s true. “I think once it’s in your system you just love it. There’s definitely these people who have an affiliation with the ocean and get so many benefits from it.” Lammin says the beauty of surfing as a sport is

What’s the surf ng culture like on the Sunshine Coast, compared to other places you’ve surfed? “It’s similar to a lot of places in terms of how many of the population surf and how much a part of the lifestyle it is, but I am nowhere near as comfortable anywhere else in the world as I am here, so of course it seems that much better. I really like travelling everywhere I do travel though, and experiencing the different cultures and people in those countries.”
that it’s a very fun activity, and the focus is still on freedom of expression, even at the top levels. “You watch it and it’s an art form,” he says. “What you see a surfer do on a particular wave face can be representative of the type of person they are, and that’s what makes it so interesting. “You talk to a lot of the surfers on the professional circuit now, they can still be honest and say they love what they do, it’s not a ‘job’ as such. And I think that’s part of the allure of the sport of surfing, particularly for the young teenagers.”

It’s just another day in the office for local Mark Visser
Bigger is better for Mark Visser While the men and women on the pro surfing scene wow crowds with 360s, aerials and impossible backflips, there is another level of surfing that’s been drawing attention over recent years. Big wave surfers are a very special breed, and while surfing can be a fairly gnarly sport (cuts and bumps, hold-downs, even broken limbs and plenty of broken boards, are all part of the game), most pro surfers wouldn’t dream of tackling the kinds of swell that big wave riders travel the world for. And no one rides the monster waves quite like the Sunshine Coast’s own Mark Visser. While there are big wave comps on around the
world, for these surfers it isn’t about chasing a trophy to hold aloft in front of an adoring bikiniclad crowd. What’s important is the thrill of the chase, the adventure of getting to the surf spot and, ultimately, surviving the drop. Visser was born in Victoria but his family moved to the Sunshine Coast when he was a child. He started surfing when he was 10 – a late start for many Coast grommets – but was soon representing Australia. The 29-year-old competed on the ASP world tour for a few years before the big waves beckoned. He doesn’t seem interested in the competing with other big wave riders, though he has placed in various comps around the world. He calls himself an ‘adventure athlete’ rather than a surfer, which is evidenced in the missions he chooses to tackle. In January 2011 Visser became the first person to surf an infamous Maui break called Jaws – at night. A Jet Ski towed him into waves reaching 40 feet. Lighting his way were special LEDs that were built into his vest and board, plus a beam from a helicopter above, which followed him across the giant face. The feat was the subject of his documentary Nine Lives. His second project is Operation Deep Blue, which follows him and his team as they parachute, with Jet Skis and boards, out of an aircraft into the middle of the ocean to surf storm swells.
Vote for our surfers Getting used to competition is an important step for up-and-coming surfers, and two Coast teenagers are currently vying for the chance to do that at the Breaka Burleigh Pro in March. Caloundra’s Laura Poncini (pictured) and Coolum’s Kelly Norris have been shortlisted to win a wildcard entry in the WCT event – a huge opportunity for surfers their age. The event will feature the world’s top surfers and will be watched by sponsors and talent scouts. You can vote for Laura and Kelly by liking the Breaka Burleigh Pro Facebook page and clicking the ‘Win a Wildcard’ tab, but hurry because voting closes January 18 at 5pm.

Teen rocker Reece Mastin is celebrating the release of his sophomore album, Beautiful Nightmare, with a national tour. Sony Music and the HOT 30 Countdown brought the tour to the Events Centre, Caloundra, where young local music fans (and mums) enjoyed a highenergy live show from the winner of The X-Factor.

2013 PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS, Los Angeles Hosted by The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco, the 2013 People’s Choice Awards were presented in a big ceremony at downtown Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre. Jennifer Lawrence and Katy Perry were big winners on the night. Pop starlet Taylor Swift has come a long way in the fashion stakes. Her sophisticated Ralph Lauren gown was easily our pick for the look of the night, f tting Swift’s frame perfectly and accentuating her f gure with a plunging neckline. Turquoise earrings and dramatic eye make-up tie the look together – who said wearing white was boring? Another great way to spice up an outf t is with a clutch purse. early 20,000 people are expected to pass through the doors of Yandina’s Ginger Factory this weekend as part of the annual Ginger Flower and Food Festival. The three-day event, which has been running for 17 years, will feature more than 125 varieties of ornamental gingers and heliconias and will showcase some of the region’s finest food. Popular local chef Martin Duncan from Freestyle Escape at Dulong is excited to be taking part in the festival for the first time and will be holding cooking demonstrations on all three days. “I love it because it showcases the region to visitors and locals and I think sometimes the locals don’t know what’s on their back door.” He says people don’t realise the level of diversity and quality available in our food on the Coast. “We’ve got such an abundance of produce that’s quite quirky and different,” he says.
Local chef Martin Duncan from Freestyle Escape will be presenting tasty delights across the weekend. And some of our finest will be showcased at this weekend’s festival, including, of course, ginger. The Sunshine Coast is the biggest producer of ginger in Australia and Buderim Ginger is the largest ginger processor in the country. The festival is supported by a wide range of local and celebrity gardeners, chefs, artists and entertainers, including ABC personality Phil Dudman and celebrity chef and organic gardener Linda Brennan.

USC professor to speak at global conference A University of the Sunshine Coast academic will be a keynote speaker at a global conference for scientists and experts in Paralympic sport in Germany this year. Professor of sport science Brendan Burkett will discuss changes in rugby and basketball wheelchairs and prosthetic legs, and how these have enhanced athletes’ abilities to perform. “Technology and equipment is critical for Paralympic athletes, whether it’s for allowing them to do their daily tasks or something
sports-specific that meets the requirements of that sport and allows them to perform in that sport,” Burkett says. The Vista 2013 conference will be held in May and Burkett says his selection as a speaker is prestigious and recognises USC’s leadership role and expertise in an important current issue.

CORONER RELEASES NEW NATALIE WOOD REPORT
AP
A
newly released report shows coroner’s officials amended actress Natalie Wood’s death certificate last year based on unanswered questions more than 30 years ago about bruises on her upper body, but could conclude only that she drowned under undetermined circumstances. Wood’s death has remained one of Hollywood’s most enduring mysteries. Conflicting versions of what happened on a yacht with the Oscar-nominated actress, her actor-husband Robert Wagner (pictured here with Wood) and friend, actor Christopher Walken, have contributed to the confusion. Wood’s death certificate was amended last year to change the cause of her death from drowning to “drowning and other undetermined factors”.
Los Angeles County coroner’s officials say in an addendum to Wood’s autopsy report that some of the bruises may have occurred before she went into the water and drowned, but that could not be determined definitively. The new report also says there are conflicting statements about when the boat’s occupants discovered Wood was missing. AP

Blind Russian girl criticises adoption ban A blind Russian student’s impassioned criticism of the ban on adoption by Americans has added a compelling voice to the chorus of condemnation of the law. Since her January 6 blog entry complaining about the ban, written as an open letter to President Vladimir Putin, Natasha Pisarenko has attracted the wide attention of Russian media and, she fears, drawn the disapproving notice of authorities. The adoption ban, which went into effect on January 1, is one of the most controversial moves of the first year of Putin’s third term in the Kremlin. It was enacted as part of
a bill retaliating for a new US law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators. But critics say it punishes innocent children by denying them a chance of escaping Russia’s oftendismal orphanages. Pisarenko wrote that Russians rarely adopt disabled children because the country’s medical system is backward and can’t take care of them. In a later post, she expressed worry that her letter would cause her parents to be called in for questioning by regional authorities. “Probably, I will regret that I wrote what I think,” Pisarenko wrote. tockland’s masterplan for the new Oceanside Health Hub in central Kawana has received approval from the Sunshine Coast Council. The Health Hub precinct is located next to the future public and private hospitals and will provide about 32,000 square metres of allied health, research, retail and other services. Stockland regional manager, David Laner, welcomed the council’s formal approval of the Health Hub Masterplan as a major milestone for the Sunshine Coast. “This approval provides certainty for investors, developers, and businesses who want to be part of Australia’s largest new hospital and health project,” Laner says. “We have already seen strong interest in the Oceanside Health Hub from many different companies and organisations,” he adds. “This decision from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council will ensure we remain on track to see the first services in the precinct open their doors during 2014.’’ Sunshine Coast acting mayor, Chris Thompson, says the Oceanside

Health Hub will be a key driver of an unprecedented era of public and private investment on the Coast. “With the $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital opening in 2016 and the private hospital finishing late this year, the extra services offered by the Health Hub will be absolutely vital. “We look forward to the arrival of a wide range of leading-edge businesses in this 21st-century technological environment.” In October, mayor Mark Jamieson led a business mission to Sydney to promote investment opportunities in the Coast’s emerging health and medical services industry. The Health Hub and adjacent hospitals campus are forecast to contribute more than $3.2 billion to the state economy during the construction phase, followed by $447 million annually. They are also located within walking and cycling distance of the Birtinya at Oceanside residential community and the proposed Oceanside Town Centre and regional transport hub. A HARD LESSON
TO LEARN PREVIEW Forty years after Australia removed itself from the conflict in Vietnam, our nation is left pondering the lessons learned from the conflict.
A
s far as documents go, the 1973 proclamation by then governor-general Paul Hasluck of the cessation of hostilities in Vietnam was about as pedestrian as they come. But its significance last Friday, the 40th anniversary of the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War, is perhaps more understood now than ever. It marked the formal end of Australia’s involvement in an unpopular war in which more than 60,000 Australian men and women served from 1962 to 1973. The conflict claimed 521 Australian lives and more than 3000 defence personnel were wounded. Ashley Ekins, head of military history at the Australian War Memorial, says the official proclamation meant little to most Australian soldiers who served at the time of its issue. “It wasn’t a big deal when it was announced back in 1973,” he says, describing it as “simply a proclamation by the government, by the governor-general”. “But really the troops were out, it was all over for them.” Australia’s Vietnam veterans now regard the event with poignancy and clarity, bringing a formal end to the most controversial and divisive war the nation had seen, Ekins says. Veterans Affairs Minister Warren Snowdon says Australians should remember the sacrifice of the dead and wounded. “And [the] many more who continued to suffer the effects of the conflict long after coming home,” he says.
The withdrawal from Vietnam was as protracted as the build-up of troops, Ekins says. “That build-up … reached a peak about the middle of 1968 and lasted for nearly three years until the end of 1970. “It then took about two-and-a-half years to withdraw.” Its protracted nature, pace and approach came at a human cost. It was also in contrast to the views of senior army commanders, who argued long and hard that if troops were to be pulled out, it should be “one out, all out”. A hundred diggers died and another 1000 were wounded after the decision was made to pull out. “We did it in stages and we didn’t have a large enough force to effectively do that,” Ekins says of the piecemeal withdrawal. The view of military commanders that any withdrawal be swift turned out to be warranted. “They said you’d forecast to the insurgents, the enemy who would then know our program, they’d know we were leaving,” he says. “All they would have to do is bide their time and wait.” The staged withdrawal signalled to the enemy that Australian troops would be gone from Phuoc Tuy. Just two months after the Australians left, the control they had managed to achieve in the province collapsed. Back home, Australians who had initially supported the war when it began in 1962 were starting to lose faith in its worth. “It had gone on so long, there was no resolution and of course, the costs kept mounting and

we couldn’t really prove any conspicuous advances,” Ekins says. Australians had developed counter-insurgency techniques and were an effective force, but they didn’t have the numbers or the strength to secure the province. Parliament was being told a different story, as the government touted the success of Australian forces. “That’s not what the soldiers were saying,” Ekins says. “In fact, they were saying it was never fully really under control, they never had the numbers to do that.” Ekins says it wasn’t the Whitlam government that brought the troops home, but previous conservative coalition governments. “In the last instance it was Whitlam who came to power with a promise of ending the war and getting us out of it in 1972, but the troops were already home. What he did do was change policy very
rapidly within days of being elected.” Whitlam ended conscription, changed the whole posture of Australian defence policy within a week or so of Labor’s election in December 1972, and recognised North Vietnam. But by then, the damage was already done and Australian soldiers returned home to a nation divided on an unpopular war. “Many came home with the idea that their service was either disparaged or at least treated with indifference or at times, sometimes even with hostility that they had served there,” Ekins says. The war faded very quickly from popular perceptions. “I think the massive communist victory in April of 1975 came as probably no surprise to many Australians and almost an inevitability.” Snowdon says the present-day Australian government is committed to ensuring the
treatment endured by many Vietnam veterans never happens again. “That the service and sacrifice of those who wear Australia’s uniform are not forgotten,” he says. Ekins believes there are lessons to be learned in the withdrawal and its consequences. But perhaps the most valuable lesson of the war was the impact of combat operations on the military personnel involved. “We started to get a new appreciation of what the long-term effect of military service can be,” he says. In the past it was almost disparaged. World War I shell shock was for a long time viewed as a weakness. Ekins adds, “I think over time, and we realise now, that Vietnam was one of the pivotal points in what we realised is part and parcel of the risk of military service in combat operations.” AAP

QUICK AND EASY PRAWN, MANGO AND PASTA SALAD
W
arm January days call for light meals that are quick and easy to prepare. Mangoes are at the height of their season and provide a contrasting sweetness to the tangy dressing used for this yummy and healthy prawn and mango pasta salad. This quick salad can be made several hours ahead and refrigerated until needed. Bring to room temperature before serving. If you buy cooked prawns for this salad, the only cooking you will need to do is boil the pasta. To cube mangoes, slice off each cheek of the fruit as close to the seed as possible. With the skin side down, score the flesh in each half in a crisscross pattern, cutting to but not through the skin. Bend the skin backwards so the cubes pop up, then slice them off. Score and slice any fruit left on the pit.
SHOPPING LIST
METHOD
WINE SUGGESTION:
• fusilli pasta (about 1 cup) • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise • 3 tablespoons water • 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish • 2 tablespoon Dijon mustard • peeled, cooked prawns • 4 cups washed, ready-to-eat salad greens • 2 cups ripe mango cubes • 6 cherry tomatoes, cut in half • fresh parsley to garnish
Place a large pot of water on to boil. Cook pasta for 10 minutes or according to package instructions. Meanwhile, mix mayonnaise, water, horseradish and mustard together in a bowl; transfer half to a salad bowl.
A slightly sweet white wine like a chenin blanc would complement the sweet, spicy sauce.
Drain pasta, rinse in cold water and drain again thoroughly. Add to a salad bowl and toss to mix with the dressing. Add prawns to the second bowl of sauce and toss to mix with the dressing.

t’s always nice to catch up with old friends. But in this job, it’s not always easy. When you can drive as many as 100 new cars each year – without driving the same model twice – it’s sometimes easy to lose track of some of your favourite or familiar models. So when we got behind the wheel of the Mazda 6 recently, it was a reunion at least two or three years in the making. And while much about the sleek 6 is just as we remembered it, there has been considerable improvement.
The changes have been more evolutionary than revolutionary, but the result is that the latest version of Mazda’s highly successful, mid-sizer is better than we remembered. The 6 has been an unprecedented success for Mazda since its launch a decade ago. Aussie sales are around the 100,000 mark, making it the best-selling imported car in its class. Globally almost two million happy 6 owners have been signed up since 2002, and the car has earned more than 160 automotive awards across the 80 countries in which it is sold.
The second generation 6 arrived in 2008 and the model underwent another major upgrade, with changes to models and trim levels, late in 2011. Among those upgrades were, for the f rst time, inclusion of leather trim across the range, as well as front and rear parking sensors and f ve-star NCAP safety rating with six airbags, stability control and ABS. That upgrade also signals the discontinuation of the base-model Limited Sedan and Hatch, leaving the $31,450 Touring sedan as the continued over>

entry-level choice and pushing the minimum asking price for a 6 up by about $4000. That price tag brings with it more equipment, of course, and the 6 remains the only car in the mid-sized class which can be had in either sedan, hatch or wagon format – with a choice three trim levels and two engines and two transmissions. We drove the 6 in virtually entry-level trim – the Touring sedan, with the $2000 five-speed automatic transmission the only option on our test vehicle. It featured the 2.5-litre MZR four-cylinder petrol engine – a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel is also available at a $1200 premium – but the
oil-burner comes only in the sedan and hatchback configuration and only with a six-speed manual transmission, which somewhat limits its appeal. Nevertheless, the petrol-powered Touring sedan impressed us with its smooth operation and eager responsiveness – not to the point of making this a sports car, but certainly delivering all the power and punch that anyone might ask of a family machine. And although our 300-odd kilometres were spent mostly in city traffic, the 6 managed a decent return of 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres. The official combined figure is 8.7 litres per 100 kilometres for the auto – which made our real-world figure particularly impressive. Mazda says the car’s improved fuel efficiency is partly due to something called singlenanotechnology, which effectively uses a chemical reaction within the engine to purify exhaust gases and improve performance. No wonder their advertising gurus reduced it to
two words – “Zoom Zoom” – a much simpler way to say it. That Zoom Zoom ethic is evident when you get behind the wheel. The engine spins willingly through a smooth power band – its 125 kilowatt output isn’t classleading, but it feels more powerful and responsive than that in day-today driving. Its handling and ride is well resolved; it steers with great accuracy and always feels nicely balanced, yet the suspension soaks up road imperfections with ease. The 6 falls marginally short of being the most economical car in its class, but it delivers strongly in terms of driving dynamics and overall ride and handling characteristics, striking a good balance between fun and frugal. Inside, the 6 is nicely appointed with classy finishes and clever ergonomics. Mazda says its typical buyers are attracted by its sporty design and are young at heart” That sounds like the kind of thing you’d say about an old friend.

WHAT’S ON YOUR PLATE?

f you are looking for an auto investment with a difference, Shannons in Sydney could have your lucky number – well, number plate. The 2013 Sydney Classic Summer Auction and Rare Number Plates is being held in Sydney on February 4, where 19 special numerical NSW plates released by Roads and Maritime Services are going under the hammer. Five of these have no reserve and seven are highly collectible three-digit black and white NSW heritage plates. Shannons spokesperson Michael Browning says about 500 people are expected at the auction, where top bidding is likely to be for the plates 206, 207 and 210, which could sell for between $90,000 and $110,000. Plate number 206, the lowest in the sale, is expected to be highly sought after by Ferrari enthusiasts but Browning says the rare opportunity to

Holy collectible car, the Batmobile is up for sale acquire the consecutive numbers of 206 and 207 is expected to generate much interest. Browning says the early plates have proved to be a good long-term investment. With the number eight being very auspicious in Chinese culture, plate 888.808 is also expected to attract bidders and fetch up to $20,000. Two charities will also be winners in this auction. A blue 45678 and a pink 56789 plate will be auctioned with no reserve and proceeds will go to prostate and breast cancer research respectively. For more information visit shannons.com.au.
One of Hollywood’s best-known cars, the futuristic Batmobile from the 1960s television series starring detectives Batman and Robin, is up for sale in the US. The streamlined black roadster with fluorescent pinstripes was based on a 1955 Lincoln Futura design study built at the Ghia works in Turin, Italy. Famed car customiser George Barris bought the vehicle from the Ford Motor Company for the token price of one dollar in 1966. He rebuilt it in just over two weeks, to become the sleek crime-fighting machine featured on the popular television show
starring Adam West. The Batmobile featured twin bulletproof Plexiglass bubble windshields and huge chrome exhaust pipes poking out of the rear section. On the show it had lasers, a Batphone and could lay down smokescreens and oil slicks. A spokesperson for the Scottsdale-based auction house Barrett-Jackson in Arizona says it is hard to put a price on the car, which goes up for sale together with other classic cars tomorrow. The company sold a replica of the Batmobile in 2009 for $157,841. AAP

Ohmsen says his agency has 275 properties on its rent roll and would normally have around 15 vacancies at any given time. However, at the moment there are only seven, and the property management team has already tenanted five properties this month. When coupled with falling interest rates and relatively affordable prices, strong rental demand such as this creates a solid opportunity for investors to enter the market. “We are noticing investors coming back now – the rate they’re getting from the banks isn’t as good as it may have been in the past, and so they’re better off buying something cheap now and banking on the capital growth over the next few years,” Ohmsen says. “Anything that’s for sale between $400,000 and $500,000 is going to pick up $400 to $500 a week in rent. “There’s one [home] we’ve got currently that sold for $605,000, and they’re getting $620 in rent for it, so that’s a good return for that one. Another one sold for $545,000 and is rented at $560 a week. The rents are almost paying for the mortgage at that level.” Wrigley agrees that now, when there is a steady supply of high-quality tenants available, is the ideal time for current owners to consider turning their property into a rental, or for new investors to look at purchasing. “It’s the best time to be letting – properties won’t stay [vacant] for long,” she says. “They’re going like hotcakes. We showed a place down in Caloundra recently, and of the 15 inspections we had 10 applications. “That’s the other good thing – we’ll have say five really good applications, who we can then show through our other vacant properties and get those rented as well.” M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

REAL ESTATE TRAINEESHIPS ADD CRUCIAL SKILLS
C
omplete Property Training now offers a range of traineeships designed to help students identify and pursue a career path in the real estate industry. New or existing employees within the industry who have no formal qualifications may be eligible for a traineeship in sales, auctioneering or property management. CPT director Peter Ford says the governmentfunded Certificate IV traineeships offer additional
learning over and above the traditional salesperson’s and property management registration certificate. “Most registrations I liken to a driver’s licence test – you get the theory down, but you’ve never really been behind the wheel,” Ford says. “Traineeships give you that bit more, with classroom and on-the-job related tasks, plus we add an extra module specific to the type of traineeship. “Workplace tasks are often the normal day-to-
day duties, and we’ve also added an online component, which is the unique point of difference with our training – job-specific videos and tips from some of the industry’s best.” While traineeships are ideal for school leavers or those new to the industry, Ford says existing employees who have been employed full-time for more than three months can also be eligible for government funding, which more than covers the cost of the qualification.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Mercury – your ruling planet – joins Mars in your adventure zone, so plan a trip away for some time soon. It’s also an appropriate time to study a topic that has always fascinated you.
CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Expect a rollercoaster kind of weekend where you’re up one minute, and feeling down the next. You’ve got plenty to do though, and you won’t have time to be bored.
LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Take the time to be extra clear in the way you communicate this weekend, lions. If you are petulant, pompous or pretentious, then conversing with others will be strained and difficult.
VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Take a chill pill this weekend, Virgo – and resist the temptation to make mountains out of molehills. You may be worrying about something that won’t even happen.
LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Attached Librans – your partner is likely to surprise you this weekend, so keep your adaptability muscles well-flexed. Singles – it’s time to be more adventurous in your choice of partner.
SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Don’t despair over the challenges Saturn is sending your way. Instead, be inspired by birthday great Dolly Parton: “If you want to see the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Sagittarians are inclined to overdo just about everything this weekend. Aim to be gregarious and generous, rather than bossy and belligerent. You’re in the mood to mix and mingle.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Nurture loved ones, as the moon moves through your family and friend zone. Don’t hold back, Capricorn. The more honest and direct you are with others, the better the weekend will be.
AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 With Mars and now Mercury moving through your sign, aim to be as proactive and informed as possible. At the moment, knowledge is power – and taking action is non-negotiable.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
Well at least Mexico is pumping! Five friends from the Sunshine Coast just posted a picture of their set-up on mainland Mexico. They had a beachfront position with their van, in front of a f ve-foot offshore left-hander with 45 cent Coronas – cheaper than water – washing down 50 cent burritos and f sh tacos. Am I jealous? Damn straight! Now, back to the Sunshine Coast surf report – groundhog day it is! Anyway, please take the time to vote for our two Sunshine Coast surfers attempting to score a wildcard entry in the Breaka pro! Read the cover story for more details.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Some very big f athead are taking live baits and plastic lures from Cotton Tree to the Maroochy Bar. Mud crabs are around sugar cane drains at Bli Bli. Catch whiting on worms, yabbies and small plastic worms on the drift under Picnic Point high-rise buildings. Jew, mangrove jack and trevally are in the Cod Hole area using plastics. SURF: Jew are on the night high tides using mullet f llet and pillies. Look out for sand whiting along North Shore, but stay out of the water when working low tide gutters as they are easily spooked. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow there are plenty of mixed reef f sh at Coolum. The Gneerings and Currimundi with local small squid and pillies are the best place, and there are spanner crabs north-east of the Blinker. FRESHWATER: Somerset is the pick of dams with golden perch, bass and silvers on shrimps and trolled deep divers. Fluro green is best during the day, while darker colours are working dawn and dusk.
