ands up those who, before last year, had never even heard the word ‘de-amalgamation’, let alone used it?

Now keep your hands up if it’s been a subject of conversation in your workplace, at your mate’s barbecue and over the dinner table? For those of us who live south of Peregian Beach, it may not be the hottest topic, but for residents and business owners who proudly announce Noosa is their home town, de-amalgamation is a fairly consistent theme. It seems there is a lot of support for it, despite the cost to the region, and while we won’t know until next month if Noosa will break away and create its own council, the indications are that there is a good chance.

Think it doesn’t affect you? Think again, as the whole region will be paying for a de-amalgamation if that’s what the good folks up north decide is best for them. That’s why we

have tried to cut through the rhetoric and emotion this week to take a look at the numbers on what it will cost and what it will mean if the Sunshine Coast Council is split.

In completely unrelated news the younger Pearson started school this week, and as I type this he is no doubt making his presence felt amongst a whole new group of people. He was lucky to get there – a couple of MWP kids didn’t make it into school due to closures and ongoing loss of power. Our region has again battered a nasty weather system – though we came off lightly when compared with other parts of the state – but even while the pandanus fronds were flying and beach dunes were eaten away by foamy waves I felt blessed to call the Coast home. Whether Noosa breaks away from the region or not next month, the Sunny Coast is still a brilliant place to live.

UNCERTAINTY PREVIEW Noosa is a unique place and its beauty and character should be protected, but the campaign to embark on an expensive de-amalgamation will cost the entire region.

T

he mayor has warned against it, a lobby group in Noosa won’t have it any other way, a state government minister says it’s worth putting it to vote and an independent report says it will lose the region millions of dollars.

So will the Sunshine Coast region be split? We will find out soon, with the vote on de-amalgamation set for next month. If Noosa does break away from the rest of the region – and some believe it is very likely – the Sunshine Coast boundary will have to be redrawn, with everything north of Coolum, Doonan and Eumundi to become part of a new Noosa Council, just five years after Noosa, Maroochy and Caloundra shires joined forces to create a united Sunshine Coast Council.

There’s been a vocal but, it’s reported, fairly small lobby group of Noosa locals who never wanted to be aligned with the rest of the Coast, and talk of de-amalgamation has been going on since amalgamation of the three Sunshine Coast shires. But it wasn’t until December 9 last year that the Newman Government’s Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli said the people of Noosa and district (but

not the rest of the Coast) should be able to vote on a possible council de-amalgamation. The minister was basing his recommendation on the Queensland Boundaries Commissioner and Queensland Treasury Corporation reports.

The current council, helmed by Mayor Mark Jamieson, has always had a clear position on the issue – maintaining that a united council is the best local government direction for our region. And it’s not just the cost (more about that later), which will be considerable, that has the mayor concerned. Currently the Sunshine Coast Council is the fourth largest council in the country which brings with it a healthy respect from the state and federal governments when our mayor lobbies Brisbane and Canberra. A council spokesperson tells MWP that a united council has a much stronger position, especially in an election year.

If the region was to de-amalgamate, “that regional bargaining power is diluted”.

The issue has been a huge distraction for the council’s executive team and councillors, pulling their focus from other important work. But what will

de-amalgamation mean? While the council now operates as one, split it into two and the same number of ratepayers will be supporting two councils, two mayors, two executive teams, 16 councillors, double the managers, and the list goes on.

So how much will it really cost? The Queensland Treasury Corporation’s (QTC) report crunched the numbers. QTC is a body independent of the current council and the Noosa lobby group. If the Sunshine Coast Council remains one united council, QTC reports that it will enjoy a surplus of more than $31.5 million over the next five years. If de-amalgamation goes ahead, the two weaker councils created by that decision are expected to share a $45 million deficit over the next five years. That’s $76 million ripped out of the regional economy, which means less money for important infrastructure and services. The only way to counter

that, says the council, will be massive job cuts and/or massive rates increases.

In 2013, if the Sunshine coast region stays united, the average ratepayer will be expected to pay $1700 in rates and utilities. This will rise every year by about five per cent, and the QTC forecasts each ratepayer will be looking at about $2013 by 2017 – that’s a $313 increase over five years.

In comparison the QTC figures show a ratepayer in a new Noosa Council would be slugged an extra $260 in the first year alone – and $828 over the next five years.

This can be largely attributed to the smaller council’s drastically reduced economies of scale compared to its southern neighbour.

But these figures pale when taking a look at the overall cost of de-amalgamation. According to QTC, continued over >

<from previous page Noosa ratepayers post de-amalgamation will have to find more than $3.6 million for one-off costs (these include such things as due diligence, community and staff engagement, and information and communication and technology or ICT), a further $4 million or so for ICT assets (these include computer hardware and a data centre), well over $3 million for plant and equipment such as graders and rollers, and incremental annual costs will be a burden of about $2.6 million. That’s $13.65 million Noosa ratepayers will have to fork out to pay for their de-amalgamation – and close to $12 million more and nearly seven times as much as the proponents of the split have been claiming.

All this adds up, the council spokesperson tells MWP, to operational losses, a lot less cash in the bank and more debt for our region, not something the council was hoping for heading into 2013. The breakaway could impact on the council’s big projects, including the new town centre in Maroochydore and the hoped-for airport expansion.

While the outcome of the vote is yet to be seen, the good news is that next month the region will know what the future holds once and for all, ending months if not years of speculation on what will constitute our local government. So what next for the Coast? Watch this space.

Noosa’s f ght for independence MWP contacted Noosa Independence Alliance spokesman Noel Playford for comment but he was yet to respond at the time of going to press. The alliance is a group of community organisations, who according to its website at freenoosa. blogspot.com.au, was formed in 2010 “to drive the Noosa de-amalgamation debate in the period leading to the next State election”. It is still driving, with the alliance saying that the wishes of residents can be fulf lled only by an independent Noosa council. It says it has the overwhelming support of residents, community groups and businesses. So why are they so keen to break away? The Free Noosa site claims that without de-amalgamtion the unique Noosa

character will suffer and a combined council will “threaten the controls placed on overdevelopment, including high density and high rise”. It is also concerned that its tourism industry is suffering due to amalgamation and claims Noosa residents do not want to contribute to capital works projects in other parts of the Coast.

“Noosa’s distinctive differences are being gradually eroded under a huge regional council,” the website claims. The alliance disputes the de-amalgamation f gure that the Queensland Treasury Corporation has arrived at, claiming a new council in Noosa will have no trouble paying the costs of de-amalgmation, while still keeping rate increases to 3.5 per cent a year.

ix young Coast adults with disabilities have been given the opportunity to share a home with their peers rather than spend their lives in an aged-care facility.

The Younger People in Residential Aged Care Project at Tewantin, developed by Coast2Bay Housing Group and Wesley Mission, was officially opened last week.

With limited housing options

available to them, the young people would have resided in aged-care residences with little opportunity to interact with people their own age.

Coast2Bay Housing Group’s CEO Morrie Evans says the company and Wesley Mission Brisbane worked closely with the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services to ensure the home was fully accessible and met all the necessary requirements.

The University of the Sunshine Coast received national recognition for its emphasis on genetic research in areas such as aquaculture and forestry.

The university scored above world standard with a rating of four out of five in the Agricultural Veterinary Sciences category of the biennial Excellence in Research for Australia rankings released last month.

A world standard rating of three was also scored in the biological sciences category.

USC’s pro vice-chancellor for research professor Roland De Marco says being recognised in this way is a significant milestone for the university.

“We are delighted to have earned an ERA rating of above the international benchmark in agricultural and veterinary sciences, which is allied to our research focus areas of aquaculture and forestry,” De Marco says.

“This is a clear sign that our strategy of focusing and building

A

sharp rebound in business conf dence may be a “turning point” for the Australian economy and suggests conditions may be better than expected in 2013.

National Australia Bank’s (NAB) monthly business survey, released on Tuesday, showed business confidence rose 12 points in December to an index reading of plus three.

The result came after the business confidence index fell to minus nine, its lowest level since April 2009, in November.

UBS economists Scott Haslem and George Tharenou said the rebound in confidence suggested the outlook for the Australian economy was improving and made further interest rate cuts less likely.

“This may provide a signal of a turning point in the domestic economy, consistent with our view the Reserve Bank will hold rates in February and in 2013,” they said in a statement.

The Reserve Bank of Australia cut the cash rate to three per cent in December and futures markets have priced in up to two 0.25 percentage point cuts in 2013.

However, most economists expect the RBA to keep the cash rate on hold at its February 5 meeting.

despite fears underperforming sectors of the economy such as housing, retail and manufacturing will be unable to pick up enough in 2013 to compensate for a lag from the mining sector following the peak in that sector’s investment boom.

CommSec chief economist Craig James expects confidence to continue to improve, which he says will provide a boost for the economy.

“I think we are at that inflection point where things are starting to move yet again,” he says.

“If consumers and businesses get more confidence then momentum will quickly return to the economy.”

James says with continued gains on both Australian and global share markets in recent weeks and further signs of improvement in the US, Chinese and European economies will provide further boosts to confidence.

“Whether it is here in Australia or overseas, 2013 has started off in a very positive fashion,” he says.

NAB says the December interest rate cut along with a last-minute deal among US politicians to avert a fiscal cliff of tax hikes and spending cuts, and signs of improvement in the Chinese economy, has contributed to the rise in confidence.

Whitney’s face had been cut out from a framed family picture, an image Cissy Houston found “beyond disturbing”. The next time Houston came to the house, she was joined by two sheriff’s deputies who helped her take Whitney to the hospital.

In Remembering Whitney, the mother of the late Whitney Houston writes that from the start she had doubted whether Brown was right for her daughter. And she thinks that Whitney might not have ended up so “deep” into drugs had they not stayed together.

“I do believe her life would have turned out differently,” Houston writes. “It would have been easier for her to get sober and stay sober.

Instead she was with someone who, like her, wanted to party. To me, he never seemed to be a help to her in the way she needed.”

Remembering Whitney came out on Tuesday, two weeks short of the first anniversary of Houston’s death.

She drowned in a hotel bathtub in Beverly Hills, California, at age 48.

Authorities said her death was complicated by cocaine use and heart disease.

During a recent telephone interview, Houston said she has no contact with Brown and didn’t see any reason to, not even concerning her granddaughter, Bobbi Kristina.

She reaffirmed her comments in the book that Whitney Houston would have been better off without him.

Houston said she wanted the book published so the world would not believe the worst about her daughter.

unshine Coast rugby fans are in for a treat next Friday night when the St George Queensland Reds host reigning Super Rugby champions, the Waikato Chiefs, at Stockland Stadium.

The game will be the Reds’ f nal trial match ahead of the 2013 season, following a hit-out against the Auckland Blues in Toowoomba tomorrow.

As well as the chance to see some of Queensland’s best players in action, the local crowd should be treated to some impressive rugby on the night. Reds head coach Richard Graham says hosting the reigning premiers is a good opportunity to challenge the Queensland squad just before the start of the season.

“The Super Rugby competition has become a virtual sprint for 2013 with the majority of our regular season fixtures completed by the June Test window,” Graham says. “As a

consequence of the scheduling, it is important we commence our campaign strongly.

“This will be the last opportunity for players to impress before round one selection against the Brumbies and we will want to see the squad execute all we have worked on during the preseason.”

One player keen to showcase his skills will be former Sunshine Coast Stingrays player Blake Enever, who has joined the Reds’ extended playing squad for 2013 after making his Super Rugby debut in a cameo appearance against the Melbourne Rebels last June.

The 21-year-old lock also put in a strong performance on his home turf when the Reds hosted an exhibition match against the New Zealand Warriors at Stockland Park that same month.

press conference last week he is hoping to spend as much time on the field as possible next Friday night.

“That’s the idea,” he said. “I’ll definitely try and push for a position and get as much game time as possible, but there’s a strong squad at the moment so we’ll just see what happens.

He added, “If I get the opportunity I’ll give it a good crack.”

Likewise, Enever says his goal for the 2013 season is to establish himself further within the squad.

“This year it’s my first full pre-season with the squad, so I’m just looking to put pressure on the top blokes and let them know I’m there. At the moment I’m just training as hard as I can, doing everything I can, and whatever happens will happen, hopefully.

“There’s a lot of good-quality locks at the Reds, obviously, and they’ve been teaching me things here and there – they don’t mind if I ask them questions and whatnot,” Enever said.

“So it’s been really good to have them above me and to learn what I can.”

Enever and Reds teammate Ben Daley (who had his 50th start with the Queensland side in 2012) were at the Palmwoods Hotel last Friday to launch a partnership between the hotel, which is a major sponsor of the trial match, and the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union. “And to be able to right a few wrongs there, and start the season off on a winning note with trial games – it builds momentum from the outset, and that’s what we’ll be looking to do.”

The game will kick off at 7pm next Friday night, and will feature a free kid’s area with jumping castle, rock climbing, face painting and more, to keep little ones entertained while the grown-ups enjoy the game.

Other pre-match events include a meet and greet with Reds players (including Wallaby Will Genia) at Amart All Sports in Kawana Waters next Wednesday February 6, and a luncheon celebrating 130 years of rugby in Queensland at Alex Surf Club on February 7.

Graham says the Reds are looking forward to another chance to play on the Coast.

“The opportunity to play and perform well on the Sunshine Coast is also something the team is excited about after having received such a positive response and support from the community during [last] year’s exhibition game,” he says.

ne of the success stories of 2012 in terms of Australian stocks was a relatively off the radar fund manager called Magellan Financial Group (MFG).

During the calendar year 2012, we’ve seen its share price soar from $1.38 in January to a closing price for the year of $5.54.

MFG is a Sydney-based international equity funds management company. MFG manages three global equity funds for highnet-worth and retail investors in Australia and New Zealand.

The reason for the dramatic share price rise can be attributed to the consistent outperformance of its

funds over the MSCI World Index, which it competes against.

This in turn motivates both retail and institutional investors to direct their money into these funds.

It seems as though 2013 is going to be a continuation of MFG’s success, with an inflow of $660 million reported for December.

This has been a catalyst for its share price to take another run north, appreciating over 10 per cent in the first two weeks of January.

Analysts have been sent back to the drawing board to adjust their numbers to try and determine a valuation for this moving beast.

The latest analyst report I’ve reviewed has MFG still as a strong ‘buy’ with a price target of $6.80 but with significant upside potential. Let’s hope it is a prosperous New Year for MFG and the market in general.

DON’T FALL INTO THE GREENWASHING TRAP

he world’s f rst masterclass on greenwashing was held in San Francisco last week

by US-based organics watchdog, Organic Monitor.

The aim was to educate cosmetics companies on ways to formulate their products so they are genuinely natural and organic – a difficult and expensive process – and avoid the pitfalls of greenwashing.

Greenwashing is the marketing spin companies use to give their products a false ‘natural’ image.

It is particularly insidious in the cosmetics industry, where consumers seem particularly

susceptible to these marketing tricks.

Natural beauty products are one of the fastest growing sectors of the cosmetics industry, hence the growth of greenwashing.

As consumers show more concern about potentially harmful preservatives, fragrances and fillers contained in beauty and personal care products, sales of natural and organic skin care, hair care and makeup products in the US are predicted to top $11 billion by 2016.

Unlike food, there is currently no government legislation governing the use of the words organic or natural on beauty products.

This leaves big cosmetics companies a lot of leeway to capitalise on the rising interest in organic products.

A common practice is to create a product that is mostly comprised of synthetic chemicals and water, add in a minimal amount of a herbal extract or an essential oil, then package it in earthy coloured bottles plastered with buzzwords like natural, organic,

hypoallergenic, paraben-free and preservative-free.

With no government legislation to stop greenwashing, many industry insiders say the deceptive practice will continue, because cosmetics companies are raking in the millions with their faux-natural products.

Organics advocates are urging consumers to get savvy and start reading the labels on their cosmetics products. Ingredients with Latin botanical names are genuine plant extracts, while ingredients with long names you can’t pronounce, or numbers, are probably synthetic chemicals made in a lab.

If you want a genuinely organic product, look for a logo by a respected organic certifying body, such as NASAA Certified Organic, the Organic Food Chain and Australian Certified Organic.

EASY QUICK AND HEALTHY SEARED YELLOW FIN TUNA SALAD SHOPPING LIST

METHOD

• yellow fin tuna steaks, 180gm per person • sea salt • lemon pepper seasoning • 2 tsp butter • 1 red onion, sliced • bag mixed salad leaves • 10 mint leaves • ½ cucumber, peeled, deseeded and chopped • 10 cherry tomatoes, halved • vinaigrette

• Season tuna steaks with salt and lemon pepper on all sides.

• In a large frypan melt butter and add sliced onion, frying until soft and caramelised. Push onions to one side and in the same pan add tuna steaks, cook approx 3 to 4 minutes each side (depending on thickness) until pink in the middle.

• Arrange salad leaves between two plates, tear mint leaves and sprinkle over the top with cucumber and tomatoes.

• Slice tuna into bite-sized pieces and place on top of salad, divide onion between both plates, drizzle with preferred amount of vinaigrette and serve.

Other salad ingredients can be added or omitted depending on desired taste.

acadamias are as Australian as lamb, yet few Aussies know they come from here.

Olympian and Celebrity MasterChef winner Eamon Sullivan says there is nothing more Aussie than his macadamia and herb-crusted lamb racks. The swimmer believes strongly in eating locally grown foods and says the only food that seems to be actively promoted as Australian is lamb, especially around Australia Day. A recent Newspoll of 1200 Australians found almost a third thought the nuts came from Brazil, while Hawaii and South Africa were the countries of origin selected by 16

He says having some macadamias on hand can help keep temptation at bay. “Instead of making a poor choice if you’re hungry and getting a burger or chips, if you think ahead, you can have a handful of nuts in a little bag.

“You’ve got protein, you’ve got your good fats and you’ve got a little bit of carbohydrate also.”

Sullivan says macadamias also match beautifully with both savoury and sweet dishes. But his favourite way to have the nuts is au natural.

“Just lightly salted and just how they come, just raw.”

How to activate your nuts 1. Dissolve good-quality sea salt or rock salt in water.

5. Roast nuts in the oven at a very low temperature (around 65 degrees) until dry and store them in an airtight container.

Main courses include pork belly with prawns, polenta, carrots and raisins, or salmon with white anchovies, fennel, broccolini and grapefruit.

To finish try crème caramel, berries and passionfruit or dark chocolate mousse and honeycomb. Ebb serves modern Australian cuisine and uses local seasonal produce where possible. In 2013 the restaurant was awarded a chef’s hat for the third consecutive year, but diners are drawn not just for the food but to the beautiful setting on the banks of the Maroochy River overlooking the ocean.

Situated on the waterfront of Double Bay at Kawana is Montego’s, which is offering a special Valentine’s venue for loved-up locals. For $75 per person you can start off with a seafood platter for two, confit duck croquette with mushroom duxelle, asparagus spears and jus, truffle custard, or a tomato, basil and eschallot tarte tartin with balsamic glaze and rocket salad.

Mains include pan-fried Ora King Salmon, chargrilled black angus rump, and a trio of stuffed vegetables on a quinoa and herb salad, with tomato coulis and salsa verde. To finish it off enjoy a chocolate plate, or a cheese plate or a delicious amaretto pannacotta with churros, salted caramel and chocolate sauce. Montego’s offers a courtesy bus, and features an award winning chef, first class service and an extensive wine list.

You can choose from two venues to sweep your partner off her feet at Novotel Twin Waters. Lily’s on the Lagoon offers stunning views and you will receive a glass of bubbles on arrival, before taking a seat to enjoy a fourcourse plated menu and some beautiful handmade chocolates.

If you prefer a romantic beach setting to charm your partner, Novotel is hosting a Sunset Beach Dinner. Sit down with a glass of sparkling wine and enjoy the seafood tower for two before sweetening things up with a selection of liquer chocolates. Novotel is taking bookings now for Lily’s and the sunset dinner, and if you really want to wow your partner you can cap off the evening by staying overnight in the resort.

Set on the waterfront at the iconic Wharf precinct in Mooloolaba is See Plus Function Centre. For Valentine’s Day couples can enjoy a three-course a la carte menu and a glass of Jansz on arrival. On offer are intimate tables for two with live music.

The staff recommend diners sample the softshell crab with Asian-style noodles for entrée, before heading on to the macadamia-encrusted barramundi.

Oysters are coming through particularly well at the moment.

PIRATES TAKE OVER THE WHARF

WORLD-CLASS EXHIBITION IN BUDERIM

A

rtwork by some of Australia’s greatest painters is on display at Tiffany Jones Fine Art Gallery as part of the Australian Masters Fine Art Exhibition.

Gallery director Tiffany Jones says the exhibition is “an exceptional selection of work that provides a rare chance to see and acquire paintings of the finest quality by our nation’s most collectable artists”.

Her pick for the most outstanding piece is Charles Blackman’s oil painting on canvas, White Cat’s Garden in the Afternoon, a three-metre-long work painted in late 1968, which occupies an entire wall in the gallery.

“This strikingly beautiful painting is widely regarded as one of Blackman’s most distinctive, well-known and most collectable works,” Jones says.

“It’s the calibre of painting that would suit a state or national gallery, but is currently owned by a private

Queensland collector, which provides us the special opportunity of being able to display and offer this incredible piece.

“It is particularly exciting to have White Cat’s Garden in the Afternoon on show in Buderim because from 1979 until 1985, Charles Blackman actually lived and worked in Buderim, inspired by the natural beauty of the area and the waterfall on his property which was at Clithero Avenue.”

Other artists on display include the late Margaret Olley and Hugh Sawrey, whose final piece – painted just before he passed away in 1999 – is being exhibited for the first time.

F

ew companies can boast a better pedigree for building affordable, practical and economical cars than Volkswagen.

After all, it was the original ‘people’s car’ that gave the company its name. That car, which became known as the VW Beetle, was for several decades one of the world’s most accessible, recognisable and popular vehicles.

VW, of course, is known more for its sophisticated, high-tech cars these days, but the German giant has once again dabbled into the ‘people’s car’ territory with its latest arrival, the Up!.

With a three-cylinder engine and an entry price at $13,990, the Up! (yes, the exclamation mark is part of the name) seems like something you’d

f nd on the streets of Delhi or Bombay rather than Munich or Stuttgart.

But I’m prepared to bet this modest little machine is set to make a big impact in Australia, too.

It’s not the fastest car in the VW f eet – actually it’s almost certainly the slowest – as well as being the smallest and, by some margin, the cheapest.

But the Up! has made an impact in Europe, named World Car of the Year, among a slew of major awards.

It’s not hard to see why.

The interior of the Up! is spartan.

There’s a decent audio system plus the usual basics – speedo, tacho and basic trip computer plus rudimentary controls for climate control and the like. What I didn’t expect to f nd was a frontal collision prevention system

– I didn’t even know it was there until I powered up my driveway, garage door still opening, and the Up! hit the brakes to prevent me running into it (I wouldn’t have, by the way).

Called City Emergency Braking, it uses sensors to scan the road ahead and, at speeds of up to 30 km/h, it applies the brakes to minimise or avoid a frontal impact.

It’s not long ago you had to buy a $200,000-plus Mercedes or Lexus to enjoy such a feature – so on a basepriced machine it’s extraordinary.

The other surprise is the Up!’s Maps+More system – a little device, rather like a TomTom or NavMan, that sits atop the dash and operates like those after-market devices – plus a few additional features.

Officially it takes about 13.6 seconds to wind up to 100km/h, but in reality it feels sharper and more responsive than that.

I suspect that the target market for this vehicle â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which I assume to be young people buying their first car â&#x20AC;&#x201C; will find that no problem at all.

Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll certainly like driving it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nimble, perky and massive fun. No doubt their parents will also be happy that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remarkably safe.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a brilliant thing, almost as much fun as the car itself. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s satellite navigation, of course, and you can also set it up to pair with your phone via Bluetooth. But thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a funky setting called a Think Blue trainer which monitors your driving style, tells you how much fuel youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re using (and even analyses your consumption over an entire trip) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; telling you the most economical time to change gears. Well, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unlikely to win over too many buyers with its looks. My wife kept calling it â&#x20AC;&#x153;that ugly little carâ&#x20AC;?.

Still, it has decent interior space with room for two full-sized people in the back and 251 litres of cargo space.

VW has unveiled the Cross-Blue concept seven-seat SUV in Detroit.

The SUV, with an ultra-frugal dieselelectric hybrid powerplant, is Volkswagen’s next move to tap into the US market. The Toyota Kluger and Hyundai Santa Fe are obvious rivals and the biggest issue will be how long it takes VW to put the car into showrooms to tap into the growing demand for SUVs with three-row seating. Of more interest to Australians will be whether VW expands its vision for the car to global markets and builds right-drive versions.

A report circulated that GM was strongly considering developing a right-hand-drive version of the V8-powered two-door Corvette.

But within 24 hours, Tim Lee, president of GM international operations, used the Detroit Motor Show platform as an opportunity to rule it out stating the numbers don’t add up. “We have no plan to put a right-hand drive under the bonnet.

It would be a significant engineering task. I’m telling you as the operating guy in charge there is no plan.”

Some of the world’s fastest rally drivers will race for victory under lights at the Nambour Showground in the International Rally of Queensland’s opening event.

Competitors are expected to come from Malaysia, India, New Caledonia, China, Japan, New Zealand and Australia to tackle a new Super Special stage course for the July rally.

The spectator highlight will take

more than 50 crews and cars on a high-speed, two-kilometre sprint around the showground precinct, and the course will include circuits of the main ring and a thrilling jump.

Nambour was chosen for its all-weather location and proximity to the Bruce Highway.

The event will be held on Friday, July 12 and will include car displays, fireworks, market stalls and entertainment.

his time last year MPP took a look at new developments slated for the Maroochydore CBD, including the proposed relocation of Horton Park Golf Course and the new Maroochydore Homemaker Centre. Over the past 12 months there has been plenty of activity in the area, with new businesses and residents now calling Maroochydore home.

In early 2012 Reed Property Group was putting the finishing touches on stage one of its Emporio mixed-use development. The nine-building precinct was launched early last year with a commercial property at 2 Emporio Place, and RPG sales executive Nick Criss says office and retail space was quickly snapped up by tenants eager to capitalise on the development’s central location.

“A number of highly regarded companies including Travel Associates, Parsons Brinckerhoff, KPMG, Ferguson Cannon Lawyers and VDM Consulting have recognised the opportunities presented by the building’s prime CBD location and have chosen to do business from Emporio,” Criss says. “We’re now excited to welcome the Houston Espresso Café, which will be opening at the end of the month, and expect this will bring a whole new dimension to the Emporio atmosphere.”

A caffeine fix will also be appreciated by the precinct’s first residential tenants, who moved in last year. Criss says RPG’s focus is now on developing stage two, which will feature 82 residential apartments over seven levels.

“Affordable new housing has long been [scarce]

on the Sunshine Coast; however, we’ve recognised the need for quality housing under $500,000 and are offering apartments that average just $382,000, with prices starting as low as $267,500,” he says.

“With more than $7 billion being spent on local infrastructure in the surrounding area and at least 33,000 permanent jobs expected to be generated in the Sunshine Coast region over the next 10 years, we’ve also recognised that we need to cater to the growing workforce, particularly with Emporio being located in the heart of the region’s principal activity entre.”

Just down the road is Chardan’s Sunshine Cove development, which also experienced strong demand in 2012. The precinct’s first waterfront land release, Sarina, has only two blocks remaining, with many homes already completed; while the Brighton release (featuring larger, north-facing waterfront blocks) is mostly constructed and features two new display homes by Ryan Designer Homes, which are set for completion in March.

Penny Service from Sunshine Cove Realty says these homes highlight the area’s point of difference: it’s in the heart of Maroochydore’s urban precinct, but buyers aren’t limited to units but can build freestanding homes to their own specifications, with backyards – or water views – to boot.

“These homes are wonderful examples of the many benefits of living at Sunshine Cove – twostorey design, large kitchen and entertaining areas, both with pools and complete with large timber decks,” Service says.

with more terrace and laneway home sites and an exclusive waterfront range, and a new selection of home designs within the Sarina precinct.

“A range of new urban styles will be available and those acting quickly enough will secure the opportunity to be involved in colour selections and those personal touches that make a house a true home of your own,” Service says.

Work will also continue on the development’s shared outdoor spaces, which include 25 hectares of picturesque lakes and landscaped gardens.

“Within Sunshine Cove, impressive timber boardwalks will line the lake, in part, dotted with covered jetties bringing over eight kilometres of bikeways and pathways once the development is complete,” Service says.

“An array of community facilities will also include the soon-to-commence adventure playground and landscaped parklands including barbecue facilities, toilets and car parking.

“Walking along the boardwalk at night or early in the morning, you would never guess that you were in the heart of Maroochydore.”

The much-publicised opening of the Maroochydore Homemaker Centre in mid November also gave the surrounding developments a boost. The huge centre launched with 16 stores, including the Sunshine Coast’s flagship Harvey Norman and Joyce Mayne retailers, Domayne, Oz Design, Global Living and Nick Scali Furniture, and authorised Apple re-seller Next Byte.

The centre is also home to a brand-new Goodlife Health Club, the head office of contact centre provider Stellar BPO and 900 car parks.

Sunshine Coast Mazda also opened a multimilliondollar showroom on Maroochydore Boulevard in 2012, alongside Garry Crick Prestige and Lexus, who launched in 2011.

The multimillion-dollar Maroochydore transit centre is yet to come to fruition, with the latest

Last year local lobby group ACE launched a public campaign calling for a centre to be built, but Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson told MWP in November that although the finalised Maroochydore masterplan will definitely include

reports indicating it won’t be completed until at least mid 2013. And while the battle between Sunshine Coast Council and Horton Park Golf Club over land in the centre of the PAC was resolved back in early 2012 (and the golf club has already begun construction of its new home course at Bli Bli) the question of exactly what will take over the space in mid 2014 is yet to be resolved.

The council’s PAC plan covers 205 hectares and full redevelopment of that area won’t commence

some kind or arts or exhibition centre, what that looks like – and who will pay for it – are yet to be determined.

“The Maroochydore city centre is an obvious place for it, but roads and infrastructure need to be in place first,” Jamieson said. “The planning is moving along well; the masterplan will try to promote flexibility to attract development.

The challenge is funding and looking at the development options.”

unshine Coast Council, local residents and environment groups have all contributed to the draft Caloundra South Public Environment Report (PER).

Developer Stockland received 31 responses to its draft PER, which sets out how the development could proceed while protecting the surrounding natural environment during construction and in perpetuity, once the project is complete.

A recurring theme of a number of the

submissions relate to water quality in Pumicestone Passage. “We’ve been working closely with stakeholders to clarify their concerns in the final plan,” says Kingsley Andrew, Queensland general manager, residential development at Stockland.

“Public consultation and collaboration with all levels of government is helping us to prepare a comprehensive approach to the protection and enhancement of the local environment,” he adds.

SURF REPORT

Well the surf report this week is like having a glass of beer – it’s all frothed up and, of course, no one likes froth, but you know when it settles down it will taste great! This explains the current surf situation. It is big with east, north-east winds! Kings Beach might offer a feed of waves but be prepared for everyone coming to the same conclusion. By Tuesday we might see the winds easing but wave quality will be below par. There will be a lot of debris in the water so keep away from river mouths – Caloundra Passage, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Currimundi and Noosa.

FISHING REPORT

ESTUARY: Brightly coloured plastics and hard body lures are the go in dirty water. Bream are moving in on the rising tides this week.

Frogmouth pillies and prawns are the best bait, just inside the Maroochy Bar. Jew are taking livies in the Cod Hole area, while sand and mud crabs have been brought on by the recent rains.

SURF: Conditions have been too rough for all beach anglers, with all waiting for the seas to abate. When the seas calm quality catches will return on most coastal beaches as new gutters will have formed.

OFFSHORE: Huge seas and high-knot winds have made the past week or so unf shable, but when conditions improve try Murphy’s and Twelve Mile for parrot, sweetlip and cobia.

Mackerel will cruise along the dirty water line for easy feeding.

FRESHWATER: The bigger impoundments like Somerset and Boondooma are still working okay for bass and golden perch using live shrimps and deep diving lures in brighter colours, as the recent rains have stirred the water up and is very dirty.
