DRIVE AWAY

Ray knows there’s more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. Like being under 30 (grand that is) and having Bluetooth, 5 Star Euro NCAP Safety Rating, Condition Based Servicing and so much more. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still be really, really, ridiculously good looking. Ray wants your socks to match his mirrors. Ray wants to see your ankles in those jeans. Ray talks about himself in the third person because that’s just how good Ray is. Ray is the essence of MINI. And Ray is waiting for you at Coastline MINI Garage.

don’t get starstruck very often. Not that I come across celebrities every day – there’s not a great deal of opportunity to rub shoulders with the rich and famous when you live in the Coast. My mum once said hello to Jimmy Barnes as they passed in the street because she recognised him and thought maybe he was a neighbour or something. (A friend of hers who witnessed the exchange exclaimed, “do you know Jimmy Barnes?” to which mum replied “Jimmy Barnes! Where?”) Anyway, when I found out I had the opportunity to interview George Negus for this week’s cover story, I got a bit nervous. I mean, I’ve interviewed a few people in my time, but to chat to a man who is among this nation’s most respected and well-known journalists, well, no pressure. I am glad to say the easy-going bloke you

] see on the tellie is the same one who I discovered on the other end of the phone line. But like those poor sods on MasterChef who have to whip up a duck a l’orange for Heston Blumenthal, I did feel a little on display. Did my journalistic skills disappoint, or was he charmed by my witty repartee? He was generous with his time but after the interview was over I felt I had barely scratched the surface. No doubt George has so much more to tell, and 200 or so lucky locals will be able to hear him. George is up on the Coast soon, speaking at the next Hot Business Events brekkie. Unfortunately I’ll miss meeting George in person because I’m going on leave for four weeks. I’ll be overseas, but for the six or so people who love to read my letter each Friday (thanks Nan!), I’ll be emailing them through while I’m away. Au revoir!

PREVIEW From high school teacher to iconic journalist to author and public speaker, George Negus has always been on a mission to change the world. WORDS Jemma Pearson

s a child, I didn’t spend a great deal of time catching up on the current affairs and news programs of the day – my television viewing consisted of a weekly dose of A Country Practice, perhaps a bit of Magnum PI if the parents were feeling magnanimous, a brief fling with Home and Away when it premiered (what can I say? I was only 15), and not much else. But even now at 7.30 on a Sunday night when I hear the ticking clock, sometimes I experience a wistful moment when the mind wanders back to our old lounge room, with the family parked in front of the big square box that dominated the space. For gen Xers like me and anyone younger, nothing made Sunday night feel more like Sunday night than 60 Minutes. Even if we weren’t allowed or chose not to watch, you couldn’t avoid it – come Monday morning everyone would be talking about who appeared on it the previous evening. Launched in 1979, it introduced the nation to a solemnly professional Ian Leslie, the perfectly coiffed Ray Martin, and the man with the mo and open shirt collar, George Negus. Negus had a passionate, curious manner that was slightly at odds with his broad Australian accent and laidback sartorial style. He was no pushover – like any good interviewer he employed a provocative line of questioning when the need arose. It occasionally put a few noses out of joint. Perhaps the most infamous schnoz was attached to the former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. On the phone to me a few weeks ago, Negus brings up that interview when I ask about his most frustrating dialogues. The year was 1983 and the Iron Lady was already several years into a prime ministership that was to last until 1990. “Will you tell me who, and where, and when?” she calmly enunciated in that measured voice that did nothing to hide her indignation. Negus had, some might say indelicately, confronted her with the news

R GE that her iron will wasn’t going down so well with some of her people. “There is hardly a month in my life where someone hasn’t raised that interview,” Negus tells MWP. “We locked horns. It’s the interview I have been associated with above most others,” he adds of the “verbal slanging match” he had with Britain’s only female leader. Surprisingly, it’s a very different figure that Negus remembers as another reluctant subject. Bob Dylan was no conversationalist, “because he didn’t play the media game and the result was he didn’t try. Or he didn’t understand why people wanted to ask him questions.” Whether it’s a British politician or the American forefather of folk, Negus says it’s challenging to sit down with such formidable figures. “You think about it [the interview] long and hard a number of days beforehand, and you psyche yourself into it.” “There is an element of amateur psychiatry in it,” he says of the process, explaining that good interviewers have to take an analyst’s approach to finding out what makes people tick, rather than merely reeling off a series of questions. While it’s 60 Minutes that made Negus a household name, the show takes up just one line in an impressive resume. Negus was first a high school teacher and then a political press secretary before

settling on a career in journalism. He must have worked out that he preferred to ask questions rather than answer them – “I went into journalism because I thought, you get paid money to ask questions, and I haven’t stopped asking them since.” He’s as well known now for hosting the ABC’s Foreign Correspondent and SBS’s Dateline, as he is for his time with 60 Minutes. Younger viewers will associate him with Channel Ten’s more recent news review programs. Just don’t ask him to choose a favourite. “I don’t even think that way. I just feel fortunate to have been involved with [the industry].” Still, he has fond memories of This Day Tonight on the ABC, which he worked on early in his career, “as it was the first current affairs show”. Negus says that after interviewing so many greats over the years – he reels off a few names, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Bill Clinton, the Dalai Lama, Mikhail Gorbachev – he has learned that often, the “most interesting people are the ones who aren’t well known”. He adds, “The most fascinating thing about the powerful, famous, notorious people is that ultimately they are normal, we just give them an abnormal status. [Being famous] doesn’t make them any smarter, any more decent.” Negus is now in his 70s, and while he doesn’t seem to be one of those crusty old-school hacks who laments the changing industry, he does speak openly and critically about some of those who have taken up the broadcasting baton. “I am a little bit worried about the number of journalists who don’t seem to be in the business of question asking,” he says. “Far too many are seeking peer group approval. They are too aggressive. I can tell whether a journalist is really interested in the subject matter [or not].” While Negus himself holds a journalism degree, it’s experience he values in his colleagues. “I am not too sure whether experience is treated with the proper regard. There are a lot of people with degrees and qualifications but they have no experience.” Unlike those who see journalism as a career ladder to be climbed and conquered, Negus and his contemporaries had more altruistic aims: “We thought we were changing the world.”

GET

The f rst 60 Minutes team, circa 1979: Ray Martin, Ian Leslie and George Negus While they may not have succeeded, Negus concedes, “We maybe threw a bit of light into dark corners.” Still he knows he was lucky. It wasn’t that long ago that there was still much to discover about the world, and journalists were the explorers. “Our generation was operating in an exploratory period.” Notoriety doesn’t sit comfortably with him. “To a large extent it is a potentially glamorous career,” he says, adding that “there are a lot of people who enter the profession because they want fame”. But he has never sought it out. “We had no idea that 60 Minutes would be as popular as it is. That sort of status is thrust upon you.” Still, he says he has no regrets. His career has had him criss-crossing the globe, so it’s no surprise Negus is also an author, choosing the book form to share his stories and what he has learned. He has a few non-fiction books under his belt, including one based on his time in Italy (fans of romance, stay in your seats – Negus says The World from Italy is really about post-communism), The World from Down Under and the bestselling The World from Islam, first published almost 10 years ago. The Islamic world holds a particular fascination for Negus, and he is keen to share his experiences with non-Islamic Australians. continued over >

<from previous page “I had been to lots of Islamic countries. I wanted to get rid of the ignorance of Islam. I chose that subject matter because of September 11.” The ex-teacher lurks close to the surface – Negus writes to educate. “Ignorance is not bliss and the really important issue of our time is Islam. Ignorance is what breeds fear, fear breeds overreaction and overreaction breeds conflict, human misery and even war.” Ignorant is something you could never accuse him of being. Negus keeps an eye on the news and it’s global media that draws most of his attention. He gets a lot of his news online and from overseas newspapers and magazines. “I am an internationalist by nature and personally I see myself as a citizen of the world.” It’s this attitude he took into writing the book The World from Down Under – his attempt to contextualise his own country in the global scheme. “It bothers me when I hear Australians going on about this country being the greatest place on earth.” He adds that while there are many incredibly admirable things about our nation, there are “things not so admirable – including our relationship to those of other nationalities and our indigenous Australians. The broader point is there is no such thing as the greatest country on earth – great yes, but greatest, no.”

[ 8 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ FE B RUARY 15, 20 1 3

8.indd 1

No country can be the greatest, particularly in such a shifting world, and Negus has been there witnessing the biggest changes. He says that 25 years ago you never heard the terms “the Asian century and global warming” adding, “and we still fight wars and achieve bugger all”. The power has shifted from Europe and the West to Asia. The 19th century, he says, was the British century, the 20th belonged to the US, and in the 21st century power lies in Asia. But “there are a lot of people who don’t accept that”. This nation, he advises, must “work on our relationship with China”, reminding us that China is home to a quarter of the world’s population. Another quarter of the world are Muslims. “Our challenge is to learn how to deal with that.” So what are the challenges ahead for Negus? While he doesn’t talk a great deal about his family – he and partner/business collaborator Kirsty Cockburn have two sons who are in their 20s – he tells MWP, “The future is going to be a far more personal one. I haven’t got much to prove.” We might not see him much on TV this year, but another book? “I wouldn’t be surprised. And a lot more travel for its own sake, not just for work.” It seems Negus plans to take it easy, but no doubt he won’t be out of the public eye for long. Let’s hope not anyway.

George tells all to the Coast George Negus will be the f rst of Gerry Morris’s 2013 guests at the next Hot Business Events breakfast at Mooloolaba Surf Club on February 22. So what can the Sunshine Coast audience expect? “I think people like to hear about your escapades having done what I have done,” Negus tells MWP. “In a tongue-in-cheek way, I give people an idea of how the world has changed monumentally in the past 25 years.” It looks like another sold-out event, though Morris is considering putting on a second event if there is demand. Trivia night for kids needing surgery

TIGER ROARS BACK TO COAST

C

oast residents and visitors will have more choice when it comes to booking flights, with Tiger Airways returning to the region next month. Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson says he is delighted Tiger Airways is recommencing operations after an absence of nearly two years, with flights to Melbourne to begin on March 27. “This is fantastic news for our tourism industry and our region, providing much needed capacity on the Melbourne route.”

“It follows what appears to have been an excellent Christmas season for our local tourism industry, and I know they will be glad to receive this news.” Jamieson says the return of Tiger to the Sunshine Coast is the result of a great partnership between the airport, Sunshine Coast Destination Limited and the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland. The service will start with four flights a week, building to a daily service by June.

The ROMAC Trivia Challenge is more than a chance for you to test your general knowledge – it will raise valuable funds to provide children with lifesaving or dignity restoring surgery. Children from the Oceania region, who are unable to access the surgery in their own countries, are brought to Australia to receive the medical treatment they need. The initiative is run by Rotarian volunteers with help from community-spirited hospitals and surgeons. Larisha is one of the children supported by The trivia night will be held on Thursday the ROMAC program. February 28 from 6.30pm at Unity College Auditorium, Bellvista estate, Caloundra. Tickets are $25 and include supper. RSVP to Bryan Mason on 0438 705 196.

NOOSA VOTERS NEED INFO

W

ith less than a month before Noosa residents head to the polls to vote on de-amalgamation, a survey shows many residents are still seeking information. University of the Sunshine Coast researchers contacted about 400 residents from across the former Noosa Shire asking questions on the most important issues when considering breaking away from the Sunshine Coast Council. USC pro vice-chancellor for engagement, professor Mike Hefferan, says the survey did not ask about voting intentions but whether respondents had made up their minds about the issue and if they believed they had received sufficient information on which to base their decisions. “The survey showed 78 per cent of respondents had already made up their minds on which way they will vote and a vast majority of those reported that they were quite firm in that opinion,” Hefferan says.

Noosa’s Main Beach The biggest issues of concern are: governance, including local representation and quality of services provided (35 per cent); costs (20 per cent); community pride and identity (12 per cent); and environment (11 per cent). Hefferan says nearly 40 per cent of participants would like to receive more information about deamalgamation in order to make an informed decision. “This provides a strong message for those advocating either side of the argument,” he says. “Clearly, a significant number of voters in Noosa are still seeking answers. This survey identifies the issues of greatest interest.”

A LOOK AT ‘ABENOMICS’

Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

J

apan is the third largest economy in the world (by nominal GDP) and the fourth largest exporter and importer. Yet, Japan has a significant level of debt to gross domestic product (GDP), which sits at more than 200 per cent. It also continues to run budget deficits of approximately nine per cent per annum. The benchmark interest rate, as reported by the Bank of Japan (BOJ), was last recorded at zero per cent and despite this the Japanese economy struggles to engage inflation. The lack of growth has resulted in ‘Abenomics’, which is a reference to Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe’s attempt

MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

17.indd 1

to grow the economy. His plan is to target inflation at two per cent and to achieve this, the BOJ must be on board, as it will print the additional Yen. On January 22, the BOJ agreed to this target and introduced the ‘open-ended asset purchasing method’, which is to commence January 2014. The outcomes of printing money can be a falling currency, which results in exporters improving competitiveness. Plus, when zero interest rates are coupled with a weak currency, assets classes such as equities and property can become a favourable alternative. With many economies printing or planning to print money the Australian dollar should remain buoyant and our markets may find foreign money looking for a new home. Japan’s stock market could also impress. Chris Harris is an authorised representative of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. ueensland Premier Campbell Newman has vowed the deaths of six people in Queensland’s recent floods won’t have been in vain. On parliament’s first sitting day of the year, question time was suspended to allow MPs to express their condolences for those affected by flooding across the state. There was a minute’s silence before Newman spoke of the shock, sadness and frustration sparked by state’s second widespread disaster in two years. He paid tribute to the six people who lost their lives. “I want the families of those six people to know their loved ones won’t be forgotten,” he told parliament. “Their deaths will mark a turning point in the way Queensland deals with natural disasters.” He said the State Government would review how infrastructure was built, look at building flood levees and dams, and consider relocating

Planning a more resilient Queensland entire parts of suburbs and communities. Newman said early damage estimates totalled $2.4 billion, with 4224 homes severely damaged or destroyed. Rural industries and businesses had also been decimated. Newman paid tribute to local mayors and emergency services who worked around the clock during the disaster. “We are determined to make sure that in this disaster event, no-one and nowhere is forgotten,” he said. “Today we commit to building a more resilient Queensland.” AAP

A STAMP YOU WANT TO LICK Belgium has launched a new stamp sure to delight chocoholics around the world. “We have added a chocolate taste to the glue of the stamps … which you can taste when you lick it,” the Belgian postal service reports. “The stamps are also imbued with the smell,” it says, while the design side carries pictures of chocolate in various forms. “It was not easy to get the scent and flavour of the dark chocolate right. In the end, people from Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland all worked on it,” the service says. “It is not the first scented stamp … but this time it has been combined with a flavour.” The series of five stamps, intended for overseas mail, will cost 6.20 euros ($8.15) when they go on sale March 25. onstruction of the main hub site of the $15 million Sunshine Coast GP Super Clinic will get underway at Sippy Downs in April. The $11 million Sippy Downs hub will be constructed by Coolum-based builders National Buildplan Group and is due for completion in December. John Burns, CEO of GP Super Clinic owners Ochre Health, says National Buildplan Group won the tender because it demonstrated extensive experience in delivering high-quality health projects. KHA project manager Paul Blair says the GP Super Clinic includes the main Sippy Downs site, a Maleny hub, a Eumundi site and a Montville site. The Sippy Downs hub will be made up of 13 doctor consultation rooms, three procedure rooms, four allied health rooms and eight specialist consultation suites. The site, adjacent to the

university on the corner of Power Road and Sippy Downs Drive, will also include a pharmacy, radiology and dental suite. “It will be a one-stop shop,” Blair says. “The intention is to enter into an agreement to provide ongoing training opportunities for students and an extension of some of the medical programs at the university,” Blair says. Urban Development Institute of Australia Sunshine Coast president Andrew Stevens says the project complements other major projects in the region, including the Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Kawana. “The appointment of a locally based building contractor highlights Ochre Health’s commitment to investing in the region’s economy,” Stevens says. “This project further illustrates the green shoots of recovery that are appearing for the region’s building industry.”

CHINA READIES FOR

‘LITTLE DRAGON’ YEAR

W

AAP

PREVIEW If you believe the Chinese astrologers, the year of the water-snake will be volatile. It looks like China’s new president will have his work cut out for him.

hen Xi Jinping takes over as China’s president next month, he will inherit an economy with still-rapid but slowing growth plus a host of pr p problems, ro ob ble em from rampant corruption and falling exports to m to maritime aritt ar friction and an increasingly belligerent n nu nuclear ucl clea ear neighbour. Ac A According ccco or to Chinese astrology, Xi is likely to face a to tough oug ugh sst ugh start ta to his expected 10-year term at the helm of the wo w world’s orrlld d’’ most populous nation as he attempts to maintain eeconomic ec con on growth, preserve Communist Party rule and ffend fe en off calls for democratic reform. The Chinese celebrated their new year last w weekend, and they now enter the Year of the Snake, o often known as a ‘little dragon’ year because it follows the more auspicious dragon year. The snake is the sixth of the 12 Chinese animal zodiac signs. The animals are each associated with one of the five elements of metal, fire, wood, earth and water, and are linked each year to the ancient binary opposition of yin and yang and to one of the five elements in rotation. Each combination recurs every 60 years. The snake’s fixed element is fire, and 2013 is a water year, the 30th year of its 60-year cycle, a potentially volatile combination. The year’s astrological colour is an unlucky black. In the last water-snake year, 1953, Joseph Stalin died and Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the British throne. The United States and the Soviet Union were engaged in a nuclear arms race. “It will not be surprising that in 2013 the hot international issue will still be the development of nuclear weapons in Iran as well as North Korea,” Hong Kong-based astrologer and feng shui master Raymond Lo said on his website. R In other snake years Japan attacked Pearl Harbor 1941 and, in the last ‘little dragon’ year before 2013, in 1 terrorists attacked New York’s World Trade Center on terror September 11, 2001. In the 1989 snake year, the Soviet Septem was in crisis and China’s leaders were split over how Union w

to respond to pro-democracy protests centred on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, with hardliners eventually sending troops to disperse protesters with live fire. Superstition holds that a live snake sneaking into a Chinese home brings wealth to the family. Snakes remain popular ingredients of restaurant dishes and alcoholic tonics, particularly as a supposed boost for the male libido. Zhang Liang, an expert on reptiles, told state media that he and other conservationists in the southern province of Guangdong planned to showcase the merits of snakes and promote their protection this year. China banned the eating of wild snakes in 2000 but they were still threatened by habitat loss, illegal hunting and “random attacks by snakephobic villagers”, the official Xinhua news agency quoted Zhang as saying. “But overall, the situation is improving,” Zhang said. “Now more young people see snakes as pets rather than as a dish.” When China’s 1.3 billion people welcome the lunar new year and the start of a “golden week” Spring Festival holiday with a frenzy of fireworks, most will be aware that snakes are also associated with evil spirits and seen as portents of disaster in Chinese mythology. The Chinese word for snake carries such negativity that during the last two Spring Festival galas on state-run China Central Television, in 1989 and 2001, the hosts reportedly avoided using it. Many people refer to a ‘little dragon’ year to skirt around the s-word. Yet rather than the disloyalty and deception of ‘snakes’ in the West, people born in a Chinese snake year are said to be mysterious, intelligent and attractive. Famous snakes include former Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Zedong, born in 1893, as well as singer Bob Dylan, punk designer Vivienne Westwood, artist Pablo Picasso, botanist Charles Darwin, writer Edgar Allen Poe, and former US president Abraham Lincoln. Hollywood celebrities Sarah Jessica Parker, Daniel Radcliffe, Kim Basinger and Demi Moore were also snake-year babies. Astrologers say the opposition of water and fire mean natural disasters and global economic instability are more likely this year. AAP

THE HAND CREAMS IN OUR HANDBAGS our hands are one of the first places to show the signs of ageing. The skin on your hands is very thin and easily becomes dry and crepey, particularly if you wash your hands a lot during the day. We asked around the MWP office to get the goss on our female staff members’ favourite hand creams. Smell, texture, price and moisturising power were among the reasons why these were their favourites:

Jemma: The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector “I have quite dry skin so it’s thick and heavy enough that it feels like it’s providing a lot of moisture, but it absorbs quickly. If I slather it on at night before I go to bed, when I wake up in the morning my hands are noticeably softer. Years ago I used to use it and recently it was given to me as a gift and I remembered how great it was. The tube also seems to last a long time.”

Jarna: Crabtree & Evelyn Rosewater Hand Therapy “Someone gave one to me as a present when I was 10. It made me feel so grown-up and I liked the smell of it. It’s quite a thick one and it comes in a pretty tube.”

Tina: Twenty8 Ester Plus Body Serum I discovered it at a sparkle party hosted by Kim Morrison. It’s natural and it sinks into your skin. It’s very healing and it doesn’t leave you feeling oily. It’s specifically designed for people on the HCG diet, too.

Y

Kath: Sorbolene “My mum’s dermatologist said thick old sorbolene is the best cream to use on your hands, face and body. It’s very cheap; you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars.”

Advance Oral can help with customised mouth guards

Nicky: Palmer’s Cocoa Butter I use it before bed every night. It’s great for hands and feet and it smells like chocolate cake. It’s affordable, Australian and it absorbs quickly. Jarna’s pick

Is your child not performing well in school? There may be a problem with their hearing

We know that we tend to see the problem when children enter school. Often children don’t realise what the problem is. They know that they’re not performing like their peers. They become very fatigued from trying to listen all the time, and wonder what is wrong and become quite withdrawn.

Whichever your choice you can rest assured your teeth are well taken care of. We protect your teeth – you just need to focus on your performance.

If the disorder remains untreated or unmanaged; APD can interfere with learning at school. APD is most common in children with a history of prolonged otitis media (or glue ear).

We offer a mobile service that can come to your school or club or if you would prefer we have a clinic in Mooloolaba.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) covers a variety of disorders that affect the way the brain processes auditory (audio) information. This means that even though the person may be able to hear very soft sounds they have diff culty making use of what they hear. This problem is particularly noticeable when it is not a good listening environment, for example when there is a lot of background noise. A child may have diff culty making sense of what the teacher is saying in a noisy classroom. APD can affect both adults and children. It is estimated that 3-5% of all children have APD. It is found twice as often in boys than in girls.

Our mouth guards are made from heavy duty, flexible vinyl or laminates. We can customise your mouth guard with colours, logos and names if you require. You can even protect your teeth further by a dual or triple laminate.

We also offer a clinic and mobile denture service on the Sunshine Coast. For more information check out our website or give Karen a call.

Morgan: The Body Shop’s Spa Wisdom Africa Honey and Beeswax Hand and Foot Butter I love the smell and that it doesn’t leave your hands feeling oily. I’ve never used anything else.

Di – Mukti Pink Grapefruit Body Lotion I like a lotion as opposed to a cream. I was looking for a natural and organic skincare range and I found it

through Jess Ainscough from the Wellness Warrior. It smells beautiful and it’s non-greasy.

At Falls of Sound, we will perform a full hearing assessment and the Listening in Spatialized Noise – Sentences test (LiSN-S) to diagnose the disorder. Falls of Sound can offer specif c auditory training in an attempt to train the brain to be able to use the different directions of arrival of the wanted and unwanted sounds.

Don’t you love it when you find an inexpensive beauty product that works like magic? Blake Lively’s favourite beauty product is a bronzer that looks like a mosaic of different colours and is under $10. The style icon insists the price of things shouldn’t matter; it’s aboutt how products make you feel. “There is this brand sold in drug stores called Physicians Formula. They have this $US8 ($7.80) bronzer,” Blake told the Huff ngton Post when asked about a beauty item she swears by. “Find things that give you your identity. If you like your lips, lip gloss will do it for you. And the same goes for mascara. The greatest way to feel glamorous is to just feel like yourself and be in your own skin.” The 25-year-old famously refuses the assistance of star stylists. While she prefers a low-maintenance beauty regime when off duty, she does rely on a team of trusted hair and makeup professionals to get her ready for big events.

*

“I h have a pretty laidback day-off routine. I always like very natural hair and make-up. I don’t like hair too coiffed or done. I like looking like you can end the night running barefoot through a fountain in Central Park. “I always have people that do my hair and make-up that I really like, people that are honest,” she continued. “If I show them a picture and say that I like a certain style, they will tell me I don’t have the right face shape for it.” AAP

scalp, they are dead or hatched and don’t require further treatment. Contrary to popular myth, lice can’t fly or jump, and they can survive only on human heads. They can spread from one person to another only by direct head-tohead contact and don’t have a preference for cleanliness, hair colour, hair type, ethnicity or age. Other myths are that sharing hats can spread lice, or that they live on classroom floors. They will die within six to 24 hours if they fall on bed linen. To treat lice: • Buy a plastic or metal lice comb, apply conditioner and comb hair with the lice comb every week. • If lice are found, treat with a chemical or tea tree-based shampoo. • The eggs will continue to hatch after treatment so apply a second treatment one week later. • Inspect the hair every two days until there are no head lice found for 10 consecutive days. • Clean combs in boiling water.

f your child has already started bringing ‘nit notes’ home from school, don’t despair: head lice are the most common insect infestation in humans in the world and chances are, your little darlings will bring them home from school at some point. We have a particularly hard time with head lice in Queensland, as they spread faster in warmer weather. Head lice are small, wingless, egg-laying insects found on the human head. They feed by sucking blood from the scalp. Live eggs (sometimes called nits) are glued to the hair shaft within a distance of 1.5 centimetres from the scalp. They hatch in seven to 10 days as young lice. If the nits are located more than 1.5 centimetres from the

Chill out – it’s only February

If you’ve got a big year ahead and you’re already feeling stress mounting, do something about it before it gets on top of you. Back to work, same old routine, a financial festive hangover, and goodness knows how long to go until your next holiday: sounds like a recipe for the blues. Stress isn’t always problematic. In small degrees, stress is a normal response and can actually be beneficial, such as making us perform better under pressure. Certain situations trigger the

release of stress hormones adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol which, among other things, raise blood pressure and increase heart rate, preparing the body for ‘fight or flight’. With short-term, or ‘normal’ stress, hormone levels will return to normal once a threat has passed. However, when stress is ongoing it can develop into more serious mental health problems, like depression and anxiety disorders, as well as having a significant impact on physical health. Feeling continuously stressed for two or three weeks or more can be a health risk, but just a day or two of stress is perfectly normal. The degree of stress is also crucial – if it’s causing secondary symptoms like palpitations, not being able to concentrate, headaches and insomnia, mental and physical health may be affected. The most common physical signs of stress include sleeping problems, sweating and loss of appetite. AAP

WHAT’S SO COOL ABOUT COCONUT WATER? among celebrity shareholders in Vita Coco, one of the other major brands. But while demand is huge, Filipino farmers are sceptical they will cash in, citing the fact they have remained poor for decades, while big business has profited. Among them is Rodolfo Aquino, 68, who is paid by traders to haul coconuts by ox-drawn cart about two hours’ drive from Manila. “Whether they want the meat and water or just the meat, we get paid the same,” Aquino says. Pop star Rhianna in 2006, now exports about 240 tonnes in cans and Tetra Paks a year directly to supermarket chains in the US and Canada. The biggest players in the global beverage industry, including CocaCola and Pepsi, have also jumped into the coconut water health drink craze in recent years. ZICO, a US coco water brand majority owned by Coca-Cola, has model Gisele Bundchen and basketball star Kevin Garnett as its endorsers. Meanwhile, pop stars such as Madonna and Rihanna are

Benefits of coconut water: • coconut water is high in electrolytes, calcium, potassium and magnesium, • being high in potassium, it may assist in lowering blood pressure, • it is said to speed up metabolism and help with weight loss, • it’s high in antioxidants, • it contains natural sugars but is low in fructose (about 50 per cent is glucose and 35 per cent is sucrose). Our bodies metabolise glucose more efficiently than fructose, so for a sweet drink, coconut water is one of the healthiest.

t’s not just Hollywood celebrities who’ve jumped on the coconut water bandwagon over the past year or so. Us mere mortals are turning to the naturally sweet drink in droves, instead of buying soft drinks or sports waters, and for good reason. It’s high in electrolytes and low in calories and fructose, which is linked to obesity. Some health experts says it’s no better for you than water and a Choice review found sports drinks to be more hydrating. But with more consumers drinking coconut water than ever before, producers and governments in coconut-rich countries like the Philippines couldn’t be happier. In his most recent state of the nation address, President Benigno Aquino hailed coconut water as one of the country’s most promising new export opportunities. He cited industry figures showing exports jumping more than ninefold to 16.76 million litres in 2011. Manila-based Fruits of Life is one local business to have started profiting from the growing appreciation in the West for coconut water. “Athletic types have taken to coco water for its natural electrolytes,” says Phoebe de la Cruz, sales manager for Fruits of Life. MAKE/MODEL CHRYSLER 300 SRT8 DETAILS Four-door, five-seat luxury performance sedan with 6.4-litre V8 engine, five-speed automatic transmission. TECH STUFF 6.4-litre Hemi V8 with aluminium cylinder heads, electronic throttle control, variable valve timing and multiplecylinder displacement system produces 347kW@6100rpm; 631Nm@4150rpm; five-speed automatic transmission with sports mode and wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

BOLD AMERICAN TAKES ON THE LOCALS WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP IMAGES Chrysler

T

he language of muscle cars is pretty simple. The more power, the better. At the lowest price possible. Bang for your buck, basically. That might sound glib, but it’s the ultimate benchmark by which performance cars are measured. And when it comes to power for your pennies, Aussie brands like Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) and Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) have always held the upper hand. The formula is pretty simple – take a family-sized sedan, add some go-fast bits and a stonking V8 engine, then

tart up the outside so it looks faster, and more exclusive, than the gardenvariety machine it’s based upon. In this market, locally built hot rods have, for a couple of decades, enjoyed an almost unassailable edge in price and value over their imported rivals. Until now. Chrysler’s big, bold and brassy 300C has always packed plenty of punch into its SRT8 performance variant. Now, though, it offers value – and pure horsepower – to leave the Aussie favourites swallowing dust. How’s this for a lovely set of numbers – 6.4 (that’s litres of engine

capacity – dwarfing both Aussie offerings; 347 (that’s kilowatts); 4.8 (that’s how many seconds we estimate it takes to reach the speed limit); 66 (that’s how many thousands this big rocketship will set you back). Yes, $66-grand for one of the most powerful machines on our roads. Hardly seems fair. Which is why recent news that Chrysler’s Australian arm plans to import a stripped-back, cheaper version of the SRT8 – at a stripped-back price around $60-grand – will further shake up the Aussie performance duo. continued over>

To be honest, it’s probably an unnecessary gesture. Even at $66,000 the SRT8 is killer value. Particularly when compared to what either of the Aussie marques will give you for the same money. OK, it doesn’t have quite the same boy-racer appeal, but what it lacks in body kits and fancy stripes, it more than makes up for with a restrained, sexy appearance. Like the less powerful 300C upon which it is based, the SRT8 offers high equipment levels for low prices.

Standard fare includes the excellent touchscreen cabin management system, which allows you to do everything from dial in your destination on the sat-nav to dial up your preferred performance settings for suspension, transmission and throttle response. There’s also a high-end audio system; heated leather sports seats, plus a suite of safety features. Put all that into an Aussie car and you’d be looking at close to $100,000. Put it into a European performance machine and you’d be paying double. The SRT8, by comparison, seems like champagne on a beer budget. It also shines by comparison to the previous SRT8 – originally offered, about a decade ago, at a price far higher than the current model.

It’s an altogether more impressive machine to drive than the previous 300C. It’s more sure-footed in handling, more accomplished in its steering and braking. Our test in the big American took in a weekend road trip of almost 500 kilometres – ample opportunity to enjoy the Chrysler’s easy road manners and long, loping legs – yet it still returned acceptable fuel figures of 10.4 litres per 100 kilometres. The SRT8 is thunderously fast, accelerating to the speed limit in less than five seconds and, if you’re game, continuing to a top speed of 250 kilometres per hour. The opportunity to use that kind of performance in Australia is limited, which is where, for the small business owners and mid-level executives who typically buy these ‘hot hero’ machines, the total package comes into play. As well as being fast, these machines have to look the goods and provide a premium environment for those regular city commutes. And the big Chrysler certainly ticks those boxes.

Speeding to Mexico Australian rally driving star Chris Atkinson has been invited to drive one of the world’s best rally cars for the top team in the FIA World Rally Championship in Mexico next month. The 33-year-old will drive the Citroën Abu Dhabi World Rally Team’s DS3 WRC car on Rally Guanajuato Mexico, round three of the WRC. Atkinson says he is surprised at the invitation. “I wasn’t expecting it but there’s a limited number of drivers who can be called on to perform at this level,” he says.

TIME TO SELL PREVIEW It’s time to sell up, so what do you do? MPP walks you through the process of choosing an agent and advertising your home. WORDS Jemma Pearson

F

eel daunted by the selling process because you are no good at sales? Well you don’t need to be, as that’s what your agent is for. All you need to do is choose the right person for the job. First up, check that your agent is accredited with the Real Estate Institute of Queensland. REIQ-accredited agents have to adhere to certain standards of practice and, according to the REIQ, “are committed to continuing professional development and ongoing training”. So which agent do you go for – the popular busy one that comes from a big agency or the more humble agent from the boutique company? Ask friends and family who they think you should go for, but ultimately it really comes down to personality. Meet with a few agents over coffee and ask yourself, does this person seem professional? Is she or he really interested in my needs? Is she/he really listening to me or merely trying to tell me what to do? Like any relationship, it’s important that you feel a connection with your agent. Expertise in the kind of property you own is important too. So if you have a waterfront property, go with an agent that has experience selling large canal homes. Moving on from your acreage in the hinterland? It’s best to get an agent who has sold this type of property before.

[ 36 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ FE B RUARY 15, 2 0 1 3

36.indd 1

Here are a few questions you might want to ask: • • • • •

What is your experience as an agent? How long have you worked on the Sunshine Coast? How many sales did you make last year? What are you strengths as an agent? What do you think my property is worth and how did you come to that figure?

Your agent should: • Advise you how he or she will get the potential buyers into the home. • Implement a marketing strategy. • Advise you on whether auction or private treaty is the best way to go. • Negotiate with potential buyers to give you the best possible advice. • Advise on the legals and paperwork. While a connection is important, remember, an agent is there to tell you the truth about your home and not just what you want to hear, so there is no point enlisting the services of someone just because he can tell you that yes, he can sell your home in a flat market for more than you paid

for it. The most successful, most respected agents tell it like it is. Before settling on an agent, make sure you are very clear on the cost of the service and any charges, such as for advertising, that you are expected to pay. You’ll be asked to sign an agreement, which you should read very thoroughly before putting your name to. Once you’re comfortable with an agent, it’s time to think about advertising. OK, you are reading a publication that advertises properties for sale, so of course we are going to tell you that it’s an important part of the selling process, but what a lot of people don’t think about is that houses are products like any other, and potential buyers are not going to know that it’s listed for sale if you don’t tell them about it. So what’s the best way to advertise? Simply taking out lots of ads in the local paper, letter box dropping every home in your neighbourhood and listing it on the real estate websites, without any thought to a marketing strategy, will perhaps lead to the eventual sale of your home, but it may take longer than you’d hoped and may mean you don’t get the best price. There is an art to any successful sale, and it starts with deciding who is your most likely buyer and then marketing to that buyer. Sit down and list the features of your property. Is it in the Mountain Creek school

zone? Does it have a large outdoor entertaining So what makes an effective ad? Having deck, 500 metres from the beach, in a highprofessional photos is crucial. And remember security building? you are selling not your home, but an idea. Get Your property is not going to appeal to rid of the clutter, move furniture around to everyone, so there is no point trying to make make the photos more appealing. NEWS & VIEWS

NEW ACT CUTS THE RED TAPE

T

These draft bills include legislative amendments to reduce regulatory burdens. The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has welcomed the proposal to create a property specific piece of legislation. REIQ chairman Pamela Bennett says the reforms are long overdue. “The length and complexity of the legislation made navigating and complying with the PAMD Act very difficult for real estate practitioners,” she says.

he Queensland Government announced on Monday that the Property Agents and Motor Dealer Act 2000 (PAMD Act) will be split into industry-specific acts. The PAMD Act provides for the licensing and regulation of real estate agents, resident letting agents, property developers, motor dealers, auctioneers and commercial agents. It also establishes a claim fund for consumers who suffer financial loss as a result of the conduct of a licensee.

“The REIQ has long voiced our concerns about the PAMD Act and we are extremely pleased the focus of the reforms relate to the reduction of red tape and the simplification of the contract process. The REIQ has also acknowledged the government’s willingness to work with it and other stakeholders to improve the legislation, to reduce the burden on the profession, and to simplify the real estate transaction process.

MY VIEW

JANUARY AUCTION WRAP-UP MPP’s newest columnist and Jason Andrew Group auctioneer Gordon Macdonald takes a look at the January auction market.

J

anuary brought a flurry of optimism and activity to the Sunshine Coast property market, with buyers out in force at open homes. However, although the energy has been incredible and crowd numbers at auction events have been higher than I’ve seen for quite some time, it’s far too early to be calling a recovery. For those who like the details, the average number of inspections per property doubled from December to January, while average crowd size on auction day was up by more than 50 per cent. But despite this, the average number of bidder registrations on auction

day was actually similar over the same period. Perhaps most interestingly, sellers who achieved a sale under the hammer on auction day had to drop their reserve price by an average of 8.5 per cent in January, up from 4.8 per cent in December. Overall, the clearance rate in January was lower than in December, finishing up at 33 per cent. What does it all mean? Although revealing encouraging signs of good things to come, the data essentially shows that all this activity is yet to translate to an increase in the number of sales or any upwards pressure on prices. That may happen, or not – I don’t deal in predictions, as it’s

important to deal in the facts of the current market, which is where all good property decisions are made. With all this activity, there are likely to be solid opportunities to sell right now, particularly for those who’ve been waiting for some time. But to achieve a sale in any market, sellers need to remain objective about current market values. Listen to buyer feedback that’s received throughout the marketing campaign, and don’t become overly optimistic off the back of reports about the market recovering. One is real and valuable information about your property – the other is just general speculation.

With all this activity, there are likely to be solid opportunities to sell right now

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Ambitious Aries – this weekend you’re keen to tackle challenging projects; plus motivate others to do the same. And, with Saturn on your side, you might even finish what you start.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 The more you network, the more your business will grow. Single bulls – take your time. With Saturn in your relationship zone, you’re looking for far more than a passing flirtation.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 When it comes to work matters, avoid making hasty moves this weekend twins. Positive Mars/Pluto/Saturn aspects help you examine issues with more depth and insight than usual.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 If you take the initiative when communicating with a friend, you’ll be surprised by the results. The more adventurous you are, the better the weekend will be.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 If you can get the balance right between professional projects and domestic responsibilities, then you’ll have a happy and rewarding weekend. Singles – love is in the air.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Taurus moon energy makes Virgos feel even more industrious than usual, which can be intimidating for others. Cut them some slack – not everyone is as organised as you.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Lively Librans will be busy this weekend, as you boost the confidence of colleagues and have fun with friends. When it comes to work and health, clear communication is the key.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Powerful Pluto boosts your magnetism on Saturday – and your obsessive Scorpio streak. You’re in the mood to focus on others, but don’t scare them away by being too intense.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Sagittarians are super at starting things, but not so good at following through. This weekend, complete unfinished business – especially at home – before launching into new projects.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Capricorns can be cautious folk. But Mars gives you a kick up the backside this weekend, and encourages you to move quickly and resolve issues promptly. No time for excuses goats.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Flowing aspects help the weekend run in a harmonious way, as you communicate with clarity. Financial matters are favoured but don’t promise more than you can deliver.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Don’t sit around waiting for others to fix a problem. If you are a proactive Piscean, you’ll be amazed by how quickly things change. Singles – it’s up to you to make the first move.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Well I can report that the conditions will include a base of more than two metres, temperatures will be sitting around minus nine degrees and fresh snow is on its way! Oops, that’s actually the report for my upcoming snowboard trip to Canada! Umm, here on the Sunshine Coast it looks like one- to two-foot waves with SE winds. If you are keen, maybe consider a road trip to Lennox? It will have slightly more swell but will have the south-east winds on it. Noosa’s A Bay might be worth a walk as it always picks up a bit more swell. Clothes are optional and sunscreen should be applied … everywhere (wink).

FISHING REPORT

with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Whiting are taking yabbies and worms on the drift along Bli Bli with mud crabs at the mouth of feeder creeks. Catch f athead and jew in the Cod Hole on live baits or sinking lures. Bream are on the top of the tide under the highrise buildings along Maroochy River. SURF: Sand whiting and small dart will be along most beaches using cured worms (they stay on better) with low tide the best time. Tailor are surprising anglers at Pincushion and Point Cartwright with quality and quantity using pillies and slugs. OFFSHORE: Conditions have not been favouring the offshore brigade, but recent game f shing tournaments have tagged small black marlin just inside the Barwon Banks on skipping gar and swimming mullet. FRESHWATER: Most impoundments are at top capacity with Somerset just reopening and the water very murky. Check in for info if planning an impoundment visit until the weather improves. Try f shing in the upper reaches of coastal rivers for a better return.
