appy autumn everyone. I really love this time of year. The Coast has calmed down after the crazy Christmas period, the weather is milder but still warm enough for a dip in the ocean (when it’s not raining, that is), and the Elegant Rabbits are already lining the shelves at the supermarket.

Actually let’s face it, the Easter eggs started appearing before the Christmas tinsel came down. But I ask – who needs a pack of 12 Cadbury Creme eggs in January? Actually don’t get me started – that’s a topic for another column.

OK, where was I? Autumn. It’s traditionally a time for preparing for winter, and in Australia, it’s the time when you might start thinking about the tax man. Yep, the end of the financial year is creeping up on us, so we thought it timely to bring you a story about getting your

finances in order. Jarna Baudinette is channelling Noel Whittaker and offering some advice on how to manage your household budget better.

We all have some financial habits that probably need improving, so whether you’re a baby boomer who’s let the paperwork slide or a teenager squirreling away the money from your first weekend job, turn over the page and get yourself in order. It’s not rocket science but good sound advice.

Often this happens because people simply do not have the knowledge to manage their financial affairs, or cannot envisage their circumstances changing in future.

“Often, we see people overcommit themselves by way of credit card or loan repayments, not realising the impact these repayments will have on their household cash flow,” Ferguson says. “Maybe they can manage the stretch to meet a loan repayment now, but what if interest rates go up? Or what if their employment income decreases? Or what if they can no longer work because of illness or injury? There are many ‘what ifs’ that too often are not considered.”

This may mean devising a budget or implementing a savings plan for the first time, or it may involve setting more significant future goals, such as saving for your child’s education costs or your own retirement. Either way, it’s important to seek independent advice from someone qualified, who can help you understand your financial goals, “strip back the emotion” and devise a structured plan to get you there, Ferguson says. A qualified financial planner will also often identify key issues you may have missed.

“Unfortunately, one thing too many Australians do ignore is the protection of their assets, their incomes, and subsequently, their families,” Ferguson says. “It’s still amazing to note the number of people who will insure their car, their boat or their house; but will not insure their most valuable asset – their ability to earn an income.”

Tracey Ferguson from Close Financial Planning has f ve key tips for people wanting to get their household f nances in order.

1. Avoid credit cards – Those little pieces of plastic are so easy to use, and sometimes it’s too easy to forget that it’s real money. Many resolve to pay the balance off quickly, but the reality is that they often don’t, and end up paying far more for things than they would have if cash had been used.

2. Stick to a budget – Budgeting is not a four-letter word. Without a budget, how can you know where your money is going? If you don’t know where your money is going, how can you set spending and saving goals?

You need a budget, regardless of what you earn.

3. Always have a cash buffer – Don’t spend everything you earn. Always have money you can call on at short notice. Set aside at least f ve per cent of your income

for savings, making sure you keep enough for those ‘just in case’ moments.

4. Insure yourself – Sometimes I see people who are paying too much for death and disability insurance, or are paying for cover they don’t need. However, it’s important that you have enough insurance to protect you and your family in the event of death and disability.

It really doesn’t cost that much, and is a key part of making your f nancial plan a successful one.

5. Plan for retirement (it will be here soon enough!)

– Talk to your f nancial planner about the option of making additional superannuation contributions. This is a very complex area, fraught with pitfalls, so it’s important you get it right.

Everyone’s income, expenses and spending habits are different, so you need to take an individualised approach to your f nancial affairs. Some people are great at saving; others can cover their weekly expenses but aren’t disciplined enough to put aside cash for larger, less regular expenses, such as car registration or utility bills.

If you f nd yourself coming up short on periodic bills, you can contact your electricity, phone or gas supplier to organise ‘bill smoothing’ – a process where you pay a certain amount every week into your utilities account, rather than one lump sum when the bill is due.

After years of struggling with bills, Mountain Creek woman Kath has adopted this strategy and says she and her family are f nally feeling on top of their f nancial situation.

“I calculated how much our quarterly bills were and broke that down into weekly payments, and each week I automatically B-PAY that amount into the relevant account,” she says. “This way I know those expenses are covered, so after I’ve paid the mortgage and bought groceries and petrol, I know exactly how much is left over.

“We’ve never been great at saving, and were always spending what was left over each week – we realised just how close we were to being in serious f nancial stress if one of us got sick or lost a job,” Kath says. “Because I’m making these payments in advance, it gives you a f nancial buffer zone. I know sometimes I’d like to have the extra money to spend [each week] but it means you always get through.”

First time investors You’ve managed to save some cash for the first time – now what should you do with it?

Darryl Watt from Ord Minnett Buderim has some tips for new investors.

Most people are familiar with the concept of putting aside regular savings to build up a cash reserve.

However, keeping your savings in a bank account will only earn a small percentage of interest per annum and probably not even pace with inf ation. Investing, as opposed to simply saving, can deliver a much better result by putting your money to work so that you can get ahead.

Importantly, you do not need huge resources to get started.

The f rst steps in the investment process are to set your goals and evaluate your appetite for risk. Everyone is different depending upon their age, knowledge, f nancial position and life experiences. When combined with your investment time-frame, this can help determine how much you allocate to the f ve basic investment classes of cash, f xed interest, Australian shares, international shares and property. It is important not to put all your eggs in one basket. Diversif cation, or spreading your funds across the investment classes, is very important.

Once you are comfortable with your risk tolerance and asset allocation, you need to determine the right structure in which to hold your investments such as your personal name, a family trust, superannuation or most probably a mix of these.

It is important to stay disciplined and regularly review your position making changes as required, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

HOSPITAL KIOSK HELPS OUT

W

hen you buy a coffee – or anything else – from the kiosk at Nambour General Hospital you are making a valuable contribution to local health services.

In fact, that contribution already amounts to nearly $210,000 this financial year.

Kiosk manager Margaret McCrea says the kiosk is run by the Nambour General Hospital Auxiliary and is staffed by about 45 volunteers.

McCrae says the proceeds of the kiosk and the hospital gift shop are donated to the hospital and local health service organisations to buy medical equipment and to provide health care services.

This year they have donated an ultrasound machine to the hospital’s department of emergency medicine and upgraded cots in the birthing suite.

They’ve also given $75,000 to Wishlist and $10,000 to the Kidney Support Network towards transport costs for patients.

New rays arrive at UnderWater World The addition of three cownose rays has taken the number of marine animals in Underwater World’s ocean tank to 1000.

The cownose rays, known for their distinctive indented noses, were transported by marine experts to their new home at the Mooloolaba tourist attraction last week, where they were released into the Bay of Rays.

Underwater World underwent a $3.5 million refurbishment last year and the team have been re-stocking the tank in recent months.

The rays have been positioned in the Bay of Rays zone, beside three other newly themed zones – Shark Shipwreck, Coral Cove and Turtle Temple.

Police presence at Nambour High a positive move Police officers have gone back to school in Nambour in a bid to improve safety within the school community.

Nambour State High School students have benefitted from the presence of police officers since the program was expanded to include the school at the start of the year.

Police minister Jack Dempsey

says the program has proven successful in helping to promote safe, sensible and lawful behaviour in other schools.

“The program gives students the opportunity to interact with a police officer who can help provide advice on safety and crime prevention and also help students understand the law,” Dempsey says.

280 Stellar jobs for Coast A decision by international contact centre specialist Stellar to take on additional customer service specialists as it expands its Coast service has been welcomed as a boost for local employment.

Coast mayor Mark Jamieson says it is great for the local economy.

“In addition to the 190 jobs Stellar planned for when it first announced its intention to open here, the company is now anticipating having a local workforce of just over 280 by the end of May,” Jamieson says.

“Clearly, Stellar’s establishment here has been excellent for the company and it is certainly excellent news for jobs in the region.

“Part of council’s economic development strategy to diversify the jobs market has been to attract the professional services sector to the region and the arrival of Stellar in employment terms has been, well, stellar, as far as that is concerned.”

lobal sustainability expert Annie Leonard says Australians seem to get the sustainability message better than most, with a host of conservation and sustainability initiatives taking hold at governmental, corporate and grass roots levels; from the ambitious but contentious carbon and mining taxes, down to waste reduction and recycling programs in schools.

Leonard this month visited Melbourne as a guest of the 2013 Sustainable Living Festival, which runs throughout February.

“I have never seen such a high density of people who want a better future,” she says.

But, she says, this is only the start; there’s much more to be done.

Leonard spent years travelling the world examining the causes and effects of humans’ relentless production-consumption cycle on the environment, and now she’s spreading a message of change.

Among the figures she highlights: • We use 1.5 times more resources than the planet can replenish, and create 1.5 times more waste than the planet can assimilate.

• 80 per cent of the planet’s original forests are gone.

• Toxins such as lead, cadmium and mercury are increasingly leaking into the earth’s ground, air and water from discarded electronic equipment, or “e-waste”.

• In Australia alone, there are an estimated 22 million disused

Environmental activist Annie Leonard in Melbourne mobile phones, and that number is climbing steadily with the smartphone boom.

Leonard also points to the Happy Planet Index; a measure of wellbeing and environmental impact, in which Australia ranks at a lowly 76th of 151.

The index, by the New Economics Foundation, charts human life expectancy and personal satisfaction against the number of resources a country uses.

It became clear to Leonard: “If we’re trashing the planet and poisoning each other and we’re not even having fun, why bother? Why not do something different?

“The problem is not that people don’t know there’s a problem – they don’t know what to do about it.”

Leonard believes changing society’s consumption-crazy culture to one that looks after the planet won’t be easy, but at the same time, is entirely possible. It was created by people, so it can be changed by people, she says.

hristine Milne has done Julia Gillard a big favour, just when the prime minister needs one.

Last Tuesday, the Australian Greens leader telephoned the prime minister about 20 minutes before the senator’s National Press Club speech to say their post-2010 election agreement was null and void.

Gillard says she was “unsurprised” by the phone call.

“I said, sort of, `thanks, righto’ and that was it.”

Milne cited Labor’s support for coal seam gas development, mining in Tasmania’s Tarkine and reluctance to broaden the mining tax as the main reasons for the split. Labor MPs and union bosses had been agitating for the political divorce to come much sooner.

The federal opposition has had significant success in painting the Greens as the “extremist” tail wagging the dog.

Before he retired, former Greens leader Bob Brown was routinely described by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott as the “real prime minister”.

Abbott also made the carbon tax – which the Greens demanded after the 2010 election and was later embraced by the Labor government as an essential economic and environmental reform – into a noose around the prime minister’s neck.

Abbott now says to prove the divorce is signed and sealed, the government should axe the carbon tax.

Gillard admitted not long after the 2010 election – which delivered a hung parliament – she had promised there would be no carbon tax; but “circumstances changed” following Labor’s deal with the Greens and independents that allowed it minority government.

Liberal strategists believe the party has enough ammunition to unseat South Australian Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young and deliver three coalition senators in that state – with independent Nick Xenophon and Labor picking up the remaining two upper house seats.

The negative impression of Labor being the puppet of a minor party resonates particularly in blue-collar outer metropolitan seats – where

Christine Milne and Julia Gillard in happier times Labor needs to hold its vote and the coalition needs to win back the “Howard battlers” – and mining electorates such as Queensland’s Capricornia.

Critics of the Greens’ alliance with Labor wonder why Gillard gave so much away in the 2010 agreement when it was a lay-down misere that the Greens would not support an Abbott government.

Labor strategists know this year’s September 14 poll is likely to see the vote polarise between the government and opposition, leaving the Greens with about 10 per cent of the primary vote.

They are also aware Greens preferences traditionally flow Labor’s way by a large majority, especially in inner-metropolitan seats where the minor party’s vote is strongest.

So a visible split between the two parties gives both a chance to start “re-branding”, to use a marketing term, and establishing clear battle lines.

Labor wants to win back the seat of Melbourne, won from the ALP by Greens

deputy leader and lower house MP Adam Bandt in 2010, and shore up inner-Sydney seats such as Grayndler held by minister Anthony Albanese.

As for the Greens, they have much to crow about in terms of deals achieved by working with the Gillard minority government.

They’ve been a decisive factor in the government being able to achieve its impressive record of 466 pieces of legislation through parliament without losing a vote since the 2010 election – not to mention surviving 72 “no confidence”, censure and suspension motions brought by the coalition.

They helped put constitutional recognition of indigenous people on the national agenda, helped put a price on carbon pollution, backed the mining tax, enabled Fair Work laws to pass, started work on a dental health care scheme and drove parliamentary reforms.

But to be fair, many – if not all – of these issues were already Labor objectives or values.

Still, Milne now has a chance to set a new Greens agenda and, with the coalition on track

to win a lower house majority, pitch her party as a form of political insurance in the Senate.

The Greens leader will spend the next seven months attempting to paint Labor and the coalition as friends of mining billionaires and forest destroyers.

There is also the potential for the Greens to throw a spanner in the works over Gillard’s plan to take $1 billion off the top 20 companies’ research and development grants and spend it on smaller businesses to innovate and create jobs. Milne says the innovation fund could be blocked in parliament unless the mining tax is amended to reap bigger benefits from the resource boom.

University of Melbourne political analyst Dr Damon Alexander sums up the Labor-Green split like this: “It must just free both parties up to belt away at each other in the lead-up to the election, which will play nicely to both of their support groups.”

The question remains just how much it will play into the hands of the coalition.

a possible answer, there is a tool that is used to help determine the health of the market. The Coppock Indicator is the famed tool used to identify the start of a new bull market. This technical analysis indicator was named after Edwin Coppock, an economist in the 1960s who had been asked by the Episcopal Church to identify cheap buying opportunities for long-term investors.

Coppock reasoned that setbacks in the stock market were like bereavements and required a period of mourning. He asked the church bishops how long it took for people to get over the death of a loved one.

Their answer was between 11 to 14 months and so he used these time periods for his price calculations.

The indicator is designed for use on a monthly time scale. It’s the sum of a 14-month rate of change and 11-month rate of change, smoothed by a 10 period weighted moving average. The signal is when the line starts to rise after being below the zero line. This happened at the end of July 2012.

After receiving the “all clear”, the theory goes that it’s now time to look for stocks to accumulate for long-term investment. The important proviso Coppock made was to look to buy stocks making new highs.

It is not a signal that you get very often with only half a dozen positive signals over the last 30 years, though history shows that it has been a very reliable indicator.

I would not suggest that the Coppock indicator is the panacea for the stock market, but is a very useful weapon. It certainly looks the goods as our market marches forward to the highest level since September 2008.

The trend is not a dull grey, the shade of lead, but prettier shades. New techniques and

products can make sterling, pewter and pearl tones glimmer and shine.

The topic of “owning, not hiding your grey hair” seems to trend every couple of years but should reach a crescendo as the thundering herd of baby boomers overtakes the majority of the population.

Don’t get slack about sun protection as summer ends As summer draws to a close and cooler autumn days arrive, many of us begin to get a little lazy about sun safety.

A tan built up over summer often gives a false sense of security, and with the sun packing less of a punch during the day, we’re not as careful about wearing sunscreen and hats, according to Sunshine Coast skin cancer expert Dr Scott Giffin.

“As soon as it starts to cool down people forget to wear their sunblock,” says Dr Giffin of SolarDerm Melanoma and Skin Cancer Clinic in Minyama.

“As soon as it starts to warm up in November and throughout the school holidays people become aware of it again. That’s when people will often come in for a check, at the height of summer.

They’re not wearing as many clothes and are seeing more of the skin. They might notice a spot that’s been covered up, or they’re seeing more of their partner’s skin.

“I recommend to people they wear sunblock every day, regardless of whether they know they’re going outside or not,” he says. “We all have exposure to UVA and UVB every day. In terms of reducing the accumulation of UV radiation, as soon as you can stop that accumulation, you’re dramatically reducing your chances of getting skin cancer.

“There’s also the anti-aging effect of wearing sunblock. The UVA is what causes the premature aging and wrinkles.”

Giffin warns against avoiding the sun altogether, as some sun exposure is necessary in order for our bodies to make vitamin D – which is especially important during the winter months to boost the immune system.

“The middle of the day is where you see UVB, and that’s responsible for your vitamin D synthesis. You’re not going to make any vitamin D

unless you’re getting some exposure between 9am and 3pm, but you only need a couple of minutes’ exposure with a small wallet-sized area that has not been covered with sunblock.”

With so many sunscreens on the market, with all manner of SPFs, which is the best one to buy? Giffin says an SPF higher than 30 isn’t necessary unless you’re in a highrisk category.

“For fair skinned people with a history of lots of skin cancers, the more help they can get the better, especially around the critical areas like the nose and ears.”

While Giffin recommends daily use of sunscreen, he says there’s no hard evidence to support that it prevents melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

“It may do, but we can’t say definitely that it does,” he says. “It will prevent them from getting the more common other forms of cancer, but not necessarily melanoma.”

Giffin says it’s also important to wear broad-brimmed hats and long-sleeved shirts, no matter what the season.

• 2 teaspoons coconut oil • 1 cup chopped onions • 6 cups chicken stock • 1 kg chopped pumpkin • 1 cup crispy bacon pieces • 1 tablespoon sugar • ½ teaspoon dried thyme • 1 cup cream or coconut cream • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 teaspoon curry powder (optional) • 1 cup grated vintage cheddar cheese or Parmesan

• Heat the oil in a large pot.

• Add onion and sauté until it begins to soften and turn golden, about 10 minutes.

• Stir in stock, pumpkin, bacon, sugar and thyme. Bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to medium-high and simmer about five minutes.

• Remove from the heat and add cream, nutmeg and curry powder, if desired.

• Puree soup in two or three batches in blender, leaving the middle of the lid open to avoid pressure build-up of steam.

Start on low speed to prevent splashing. Or use a hand held blender.

• Season with salt and pepper and spoon some cheese on top.

Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have become the latest celebrities to turn their hand to winemaking with the launch next month of their own rose wine.

The couple have teamed up with the French winemaking Perrin family to develop the Miraval Cotes de Provence label, named after their Chateau Miraval estate in the south of France. The wine, produced from the couple’s sprawling estate near the town of Brignoles, will be priced at around 15 euros ($19.60) a bottle.

Jolie and Pitt acquired the 500 hectare estate in 2008 for around 40 million euros and have used it as a summer residence. The estate includes around 50 to 60 acres of vines.

Other celebrities who have invested in wine are Michael Schumacher, Sting, David Beckham and Madonna.

Part two was a 350-kilometre round trip, with an overnight stop at the halfway point. On that journey, having depleted the Voltâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s batteries after the first 70 kilometres or so, we utilised the Voltâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s range-extender petrol engine to keep the electric motor ticking over.

We used about 18 litres of petrol, as well as adding an electric recharge at the halfway point, for an average fuel consumption of about 3.6 litres per 100 kilometres. Still pretty remarkable stuff.

Around town its 370 Newton metres of torque (similar to a typical petrol V6) give it more than adequate acceleration. It cruises effortlessly on the highway.

Significantly, after more than 500 kilometres of driving, the Voltâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fuel tank was more than half full, with a range of 275 kilometres still left.

Holden says its official combined fuel consumption figure is a staggering 1.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

Still, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first and foremost a city machine and theoretically you could drive your car without ever needing to refuel it.

Recharging the Volt is a simple process, too: plug it in at night, just as you would with your smartphone.

A full charge on a conventional power point takes about six hours â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Holden says at a cost as low as about $2.50.

The Voltâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bucket seats in the back allow space for the batteries, which run down the spine of the car (where a transmission tunnel would normally go). This means cargo space is not compromised by the batteries, unlike some hybrids.

FORD CLASSIC COMES HOME Ford welcomed the return of a hero last week with the reveal of the first fully Ford-built GT at Broadmeadows.

It signals the start of FPV production at Ford’s Broadmeadows Assembly plant and the return of full GT production after 37 years.

“FPV is the ultimate version of the Falcon and we are very excited to have taken over assembly of these performance machines for our FPV customers,” Ford Australia President and CEO, Bob Graziano, says.

“Ford’s history with performance vehicles goes back a very long way and nameplates such as GS and GT are warmly welcomed back in-house.

“The F6 range features the most potent version of our locally developed i6 engine and it’s a real buzz for us to be completing these cars for the first time.

At the end of 2012, Ford bought the assets of FPV required to engineer, manufacture and market the FPV brand in Australia.

The first fully Ford-built FPV to come from the new Broadmeadows dedicated FPV assembly facility is a Silhouette Black GT, with Black Shadow Leather interior.

BEETLE GOES BACK TO ITS ROOTS

When the original Beetle was launched in 1938, it was known simply as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the Volkswagenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and quickly acquired a raft of nicknames from across the world. Whatever the name, the Beetleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s popularity is not in question, with 22.5 million sold over 74 years.

In the latest generation, an efficient engine and innovative features combine with heritage to make a modern classic â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an icon, reimagined.

The design moves away from that of the New Beetle of 1998 and draws on cues from the original Beetle and Beetle Ragster concept shown in Detroit in 2005. The Beetle is now longer, wider and lower,

Rain, rain, and more rain. Surely this has gone on long enough. This may present some new opportunities to go for a SUP in your front yard, or perhaps in your local park if it continues. Although the recent storm activity turned on some epic waves through the end of last week, the current three to four-foot easterly swell and E/NE winds hold few options, apart from the northerly pockets and Kings Beach at Caloundra. All is not lost with wind predicted to change to S/SE over the weekend and continuing throughout next week; however it will also intensify to around 10 to 15 knots with the ground swell holding at around three to f ve foot, so the protected points will your best option.

FISHING REPORT

ESTUARY: Mud crabs are working out of their holes and moving into the deeper water at the mouths of Eudlo and Petrie Creeks. Bream and f athead off the Cotton Tee retaining walls. Jew, estuary cod and mangrove jack are taking live bait in the Cod Hole.

SURF: Sand whiting along Maroochy Beach on the rising tide using pippies. Quality tailor and bream tagging frogmouth pillies at Pincushion. Flathead and dart along North Shore.

OFFSHORE: Moses perch, Maori cod and sweetlip are taking squid at The Blinker with dawn and dusk best. Barwon Banks and Wide Caloundra are returning cobia, snapper, pearlies and some big sharks.

FRESHWATER: Lake McDonald for bass, and Mary River cod on lures trolled along the weed drop off with 10 to 15-foot favoured. A change of colour can be all it takes. Plenty of shrimps in Obi-Obi Creek, with bass and jew feeding in the cooler part of the day.
