t’s good to share. At least that’s what I keep trying to drum into the younger Pearson. Maybe he should have a chat to local man Brian Keayes, who, with a few other Sunshine Coast friends, is self essly bringing TEDx to town. Before the Mark Wahlberg fans out there get all excited, no we aren’t talking about a foul-mouthed stuffed toy, though at TED events, you never quite know what you are going to get. TED is something of a global phenomenon, and I don’t use the word lightly. Set up purely for the altruistic function of sharing information with whoever wants to listen, TED talks have been heard by millions, and TED speakers have included former US president Bill Clinton and serial sharer Bill Gates. The TEDx events aim to inspire and inform, and though I have not been to one myself my partner has, and he reckons it is
] a bandwagon well worth jumping on. After researching our cover story and chatting to Brian and a few others, Jarna Baudinette is signed up and ready to go to her first TEDx event next month. If you’re keen to join her, find out more over the page. Our special feature is all about caravanning, but if you think a caravan holiday is strictly for the blue rinse set, I beg to differ. Plenty are joining the caravanning brigade, and if you want to too, head to page 34 first. Over in style (on page 26) we’re embracing the nude look, we have some pretty purple beauty products to sample on page 30 and in palate (on page 24) we’ve been getting set for Easter. Finally in property this week (starting on page 42) we are showcasing some luxurious homes for sale from around the world. (My favourite is home number three). It’s good to share, but dreaming is good too.

BIG IDEA?
here’s an old Chinese proverb that says talk doesn’t cook rice – meaning to accomplish a task, however small or complex, you need actions rather than words. This seems like is a valid point, given the world has so many problems still to be solved. Widespread poverty, political unrest, global health crises, climate change, economic uncertainty and a lack of education still abound; and with political and public debate often descending into petty squabbling, many of us are ready for our leaders to stop talking and start doing. However, there are a growing number of people worldwide who believe talking is exactly what we need to do to change the world – and they’ve started a movement to make it happen. TED (which stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design) is a global conference series founded in Silicon Valley in the mid 1980s. It began as a one-off event in 1984 organised by American architect and designer Richard Saul Wurman, who identified a convergence between the fields of technology, entertainment and design and simply wanted to bring like-minded people together to discuss and debate them. Since then, each year a growing number of attendees have been gathering at the invitationonly event in California to hear a diverse range of speakers – originally from the three TED fields but
now from increasingly broad backgrounds – share “ideas worth spreading”. Past TED speakers have included great minds such as Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, Malcolm Gladwell, Richard Dawkins and Al Gore, as well as many other figures who are less well known but have reached the pinnacle of their respective fields. In 2000 a US-based non-profit organisation called The Sapling Foundation bought TED and in the spirit of sharing ideas, since 2006 a growing series of TED talks – more than 1400, on a huge range of topics – has been available to view free online at TED.com. Last November, the site reached one billion views. TED also organises a series of TEDGlobal sister conferences, awards the TED Prize to achievers who “wish to change the world” (previous winners include Bono, Jamie Oliver and author Dave Eggers), and gives TED Fellowships to hundreds of forward-thinking young people every year. There’s TEDWomen, TEDMED and, since 2009, TEDx – which grants communities a licence to stage their own independent TED-style events, to promote and share ideas amongst themselves. In February, there were 380 TEDx events in 77 countries, and next month the Sunshine Coast will host its very first conference at Noosa. Local creative director Brian Keayes has been following the TED phenomenon for around two M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

years. “I was a latecomer to it really,” he says. He decided to bring the event to the Sunshine Coast after being “truly blown away” by the calibre of speakers and ideas he saw presented on the TED.com website. “To be honest, I was so moved and inspired by watching these talks on my iTV that I just had to bring this to the Coast,” Keayes says. “I was literally on my couch watching one after another, and thought, why not influence the Coast in that way?” TEDx is a strictly not-for-profit enterprise, and Keayes says it took him a few months to form a small core team (which also includes Nina Shadforth, Adam Blake and Vivianne Barry) willing to put in the huge amounts of personal time and effort required to stage the event. “It was about six months of coffee conversations, and when I felt there was enough support I approached TED and asked for a licence for the Sunshine Coast,” Keayes says. TEDx Noosa was born. The inaugural event will be held at The J on April 12 and will feature a diverse range of speakers, including Graeme Sait, who is the CEO of Nutri-Tech Solutions; entrepreneur Rob Nixon; clinical psychologists Dr Alanda Thompson and Dr Samantha Clarke; and composer and sound curator Leah Barclay, along with 13 more. Keayes says approaching speakers who fit the bill was the easiest part of organising the event. “They had to tie into the theme, which is Catalysts for Change – who is causing change, or has had personal change in their lives,” he says. “It was a case of approaching Nina, Adam and Vivian and asking each of them to give three names of speakers they thought would be amazing. That’s how we managed to come up with the first 12 speakers, so it was quite a collaborative effort.”

The team’s efforts have been rewarded with steady ticket sales and a strong line-up of mostly locally based speakers eager to share their ideas with the community, and potentially the world. The event will be live streamed and submitted to the main TEDx YouTube channel, and there’s a chance some talks will be uploaded to TED.com, “where it’s not uncommon for them to receive a few hundred thousand views”, Keayes says. However, as well as listening to the diverse speakers on offer, members of the TEDx Noosa audience will get the chance to meet one another, which Keayes says can be just as powerful. He and one of his fellow organisers have just returned from TedActive, an event run alongside the main TED conference where they had the chance to mingle with executives from NASA and Bing, the 2013 TED Prize winner Sugata Mitra, and many more. “It’s 700 people all watching the live TED event, but you find people in the crowd are just as interesting as the speakers,” he says. “We had the chance to just bump into these incredible people. “You’re going to listen to the speakers onstage, but the ones you’re sitting next to are the ones you’re going to be blown away by. And that’s what TEDx Noosa is really about – creating a community of like-minded individuals who are hidden on the Coast. “This is the stage for them to come out of hiding.”

TED winner taps into the future of education A British university professor has been awarded a million-dollar TED Prize to pursue the promise of building schools in the internet cloud, where young minds can learn unfettered by grown-ups. Sugata Mitra’s journey to the prestigious TED gathering in Long Beach, California began more than a decade ago in Delhi, when he stuck a computer in a hole in a slum wall to see what the children would do. “I left it to the wolves, so to speak, knowing it would be smashed open and sold,” Mitra (main picture) says. “Eight hours later I came back to f nd them browsing the internet in English. I realised I had accidentally stumbled onto something universal.” What the physicist-turned-educator discovered was a way of teaching children better suited for workplaces, cultures and economies increasingly driven by fast-changing technology. His experiment was reproduced in an array of countries and communities with the same result: children can drive their own educations if provided access to the internet and nudged by adults who stay out of the way. “They can cluster around the machine, then you sit back and watch,” Mitra says of self-
guided learning. “The more you ask them to sit quietly in rows and columns, that is when the f ghts break out.” Mitra was the f rst person to receive a TED Prize since the cash award was increased tenfold to a million dollars. He says the prize money will fund a learning lab in India devoted to perfecting a formula for the School in the Cloud. Classes will be overseen by a global network of retired teachers who connect with classes by online video chats, but an adult will be on site to keep watch. “I want to see if this is feasible,” Mitra says. “If it works, it will level the playing f eld.” Mitra reasons that the traditional focus in schools on reading, writing and arithmetic comes from a time when societies were cranking out workers for off ce jobs, government posts or the like. He argues that as technology frees people from off ces and creates jobs yet to be imagined, it is time to let children learn in ways that let them pursue and embrace new ideas. “There may be 10 different ways to produce the next generation,” Mitra says. “I think I have touched the tip of one of those icebergs.” AAP

LOOSE AND RELINING DENTURES Relines are required when tissue and bone changes occur due to shrinkage. This can be due to: • Loss of bone • Loss of weight
• Ageing • Disease or illness
To improve loose dentures, a new base material including acrylic or soft liner materials must be added to the tissue side of a loose dentures so it fits properly. We will need to take an impression inside your existing denture to reline it. Loose dentures can cause excessive friction and pressure toward the gum tissue and bones, resulting in painful sore spots and bone shrinkage.

s birthday presents go, they don’t get much better than having lunch with Richard Branson. That’s certainly the case for Coast businesswoman Chris Cameron, who will be sitting on a panel with Branson to discuss the future of business on May 9 – her birthday. “Bob, the husband, is going to be hard-pressed to top that one,” Cameron says. The Rockcote director and former Telstra Business Woman of the Year has admired Branson since the 1970s and believes she may have patterned some of her business acumen on his innovative approach. “I think we have always been very visionary and entrepreneurial in what we have done at Rockcote,” Cameron says. Cameron and Branson will join the University of Queensland’s Business School dean Andrew Griffiths and futurist Tim Longhurst for the inaugural UQ lunch event NEXT? The Future of Business Q&A in Brisbane. In an Australian first, UQ is using online business network
LinkedIn to find the fifth panellist and is calling on people to nominate for selection. Cameron admits she is excited and terrified to be sitting alongside Branson on the panel and is bracing herself for difficult questions. The questions posed to the panel will also be selected from the next question website, where a diverse range of topics, addressing issues from the rise of the Asian economy to the impacts of social media have already been posed. Cameron proved she is up to the challenge, answering one about how small business can survive and thrive. “Honesty and integrity have to be at the core of everything you do otherwise you won’t succeed.” Cameron says she’s looking forward to the discussion about big global business issues. “I’m obviously honoured and delighted to be involved in such a prestigious event and can’t wait to meet Sir Richard,” she says. “I’m equally delighted that Rockcote has been chosen as one of the business leaders of the future.” Visit nextquestion.com.au for information and tickets.

SPONSOR A SMART PUP Calling all potential sponsors: Smart Pups needs your help for its charity race day at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club on April 14. The Smart Pups team trains dogs to help children with autism, epilepsy and other special needs. Fundraising co-ordinator Becky Thomas says the service dogs increase the child’s confidence and help them cope with stress. Each dog costs $23,000 to raise and train and Smart Pups relies solely on donations and sponsorship. So far 10 dogs have been placed with another 13 in training.
A range of sponsorship programs are available including naming of a race. For more information contact Becky Thomas on 0405 289 299 or email becky@smarpups.org.au.
News Previews FUNDING BOOST FOR FIRIES Eighteen of the Coast’s rural f re brigades received a welcome boost last week, sharing in $75,000 of new equipment thanks to Energex funding. The new equipment, presented to the rural f re brigades, includes lighting plants, chainsaws, GPS and Kestrel Weather Meter Kits. Assistant minister for Emergency Volunteers Ted Malone says the 56 brigades in this region have already attended more than 320 incidents this f nancial year. “We see just how vital our brigades are each f re season, and more recently during the wet season, when time and time again they save their communities from imminent danger,” Malone says.
NICHOLLS VISITS BELLS REACH Queensland treasurer Tim Nicholls visited Caloundra’s Bells Reach community last week to meet with home buyers receiving the $15,000 Great Start Grant. Under the scheme, f rst-home buyers who are building or buying a new house, townhouse, apartment or unit, will receive $15,000 upon the completion of the project or the f rst draw-down of funds. The construction industry employs about 230,000 people and is worth more than $60 billion to the Queensland economy and Nicholls says the grant is intended as a long-term boost to the industry. Nicholls met the f rst grant recipient, Janelle Grosse, who expects to move into her new home at Bells Reach next month.

ADOPTION COULD HELP AVOID CHILD NEGLECT
A
head of a national apology to victims of forced adoption practices, a think tank is calling for the greater use of adoption to protect vulnerable children from abuse. Prime Minister Julia Gillard this week used parliament to issue a formal apology to Australians affected by past forced removal polices, a practice that has since been likened to “baby farming for infertile couples”. An estimated 150,000 Australian babies born between the 1950s and 1970s were forcibly adopted under a practice sanctioned by governments, churches, hospitals, charities and bureaucrats. However, Centre for Independent Studies researcher Jeremy Sammut says federal MPs should be wary of “easy moralism that condemns previous generations for the sins of forced adoption” by allowing the apology to “delegitimise adoption for child protection purposes”. “There is a real danger that the national apology will endorse the current over-emphasis placed on supporting not separating the increasing number of problem families in the community,” he told AAP. While it was right for the nation to extend its sympathies, the real implications of the apology should not be ignored, Sammut says. “This blanket, ‘never again’ policy … is misguided,” he says. “Many children are being left in dysfunctional families where we

FOR YOUR BEST DEAL ON BLINDS, SHUTTERS & AWNINGS can guarantee they’ll have a bad outcome.” Parents of such families should get only one chance to prove their parenting abilities and Sammut suggests removing toddlers before they are exposed to crime, unemployment and drug abuse. “Children’s childhoods are fleeting and if they’re not optimised their futures are compromised,” he says. “If you don’t want the dysfunctional 12-year-old who’s got very limited chance of recovery, hard decisions need to be made, in the best interest of the child.” In 2010-11 fewer than 200 Australian children were adopted while 37,000 were in government funded care placements, compared with 50,000 per year being adopted in America. Sammut says if Australian children are adopted out at the same rate as the US, there would be 5000 adoptions each year. AAP

US WOMAN OWES $222,000 FOR DOWNLOADS
M
INNEAPOLIS – The US Supreme Court has declined to hear the appeal of a Minnesota woman who was ordered to pay $US222,000 (about $214,500) for illegally sharing 24 copyrighted songs on the internet, leaving both sides declaring pyrrhic victories. The Recording Industry Association of America issued a statement on Monday saying it appreciates the court’s decision, bringing an end to a case that began in 2005 when a consultant spotted 1700 copyrighted recordings on a file-sharing service called KaZaA that were later linked to Minnesota woman Jammie Thomas-Rasset. “We’ve been willing to settle this case since day one and remain willing to do so,” the industry group says. But Thomas-Rasset, 35, says she has no way to pay and will simply file for bankruptcy if the judgment is enforced. She believes the industry retreated from its strategy of suing thousands of suspected music pirates after a federal judge in Minneapolis ruled in her case that posting files on a server does not constitute distribution, a key component of copyright law. Until then, Thomas-Rasset says, industry groups were suing thousands of people at a time and demanding settlements of several thousand dollars. “It was right after my first trial that they decided they would

Jammie Thomas-Rasset stop suing people, so I would not do it differently,” she says. But some judges have disagreed with the ruling in her case by Chief US District Judge Michael Davis. Subsequent agreements reached between the recording industry and major internet service providers to send alerts to individual subscribers notifying them they may be violating copyrights likely played a significant role in the decision to abandon the mass copyright suits as well. Thomas-Rasset, an environmental rehabilitation co-ordinator, says she hasn’t been thinking much about the case. “If I have to file bankruptcy that would probably ruin my credit for seven to 10 years, but my credit’s not really that good anyways,” she says. have previously written about the bull market we have been in for the past six to nine months. Inevitably there will be a correction of some sort, although whether this will be a f ve to 10 per cent correction or a more sizeable 10 to 20 per cent is too early to call. A correction is nothing sinister, and in a bull market it should be regarded as a buying opportunity. This article outlines some ways that you might spot whether we a re potentially looking at a small correction or something more. The VIX index, otherwise known as the fear index, is an index of
volatility as measured by options on the S&P500 index. When the VIX index rises sharply, that is a good sign we are due for a sizeable fall. Some interpretation of the VIX is needed – for example when the US fiscal cliff was an issue, the VIX hardly moved, indicating the market was not due for a fall, whereas when the Euro crisis was in the news, the VIX skyrocketed. Ben Bernanke, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, has stated that Quantitative Easing (or QE) will not be stopped until the US unemployment rate is below 6.5 per cent and growth returns to trend. QE means interest rates at close to zero and an end to it would mean the bull market would not be fuelled by the money printing that is going on at the moment. One needs to keep an eye on US policy in this regard. The Euro crisis is certainly not over and at any time it could again rear its ugly head. One of the main
indicators professional money managers keep their eye on is the Italian and Spanish bond spreads. If these start to blow out and fears are again raised about the solvency of European government debt and longevity of the European Union, then we could be in for GFC Mk III. Finally, investors should watch the US ISM manufacturing index. This is a relatively reliable leading indicator of a downturn in the economy. If there are fears about US growth, this index will fall and consistent low reading could be the precursor to a market fall. The indicators combined should give investors some idea about how serious a downward movement in prices will be. At the moment all is calm, however, quite often this can precede a storm. oogle is calling for major Australian educational reforms, warning that the economy will suffer unless more computer science graduates and digital entrepreneurs are produced. The US-based tech giant wants far greater emphasis on computing and engineering subjects in order to grow the local digital sector, which it believes will be crucial to the nation’s fortunes once the mining boom ends.

“This is an opportunity for the country, this is an opportunity for our kids, this is an opportunity for our economy,” Google Australia engineering director Alan Noble said last week. “If we don’t do it, yes, we’re going to be hosed because we can’t continue to rely on the same old industries.” The call comes a fortnight after Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter creator Jack Dorsey appeared in a video promoting the learning

of computer coding in US schools. Noble said Australia must foster a similar awareness about the importance of tech subjects. He also called for better investor and financial support for tech start-ups and wider awareness of the possibilities within the sector. The former Silicon Valley entrepreneur was speaking on the sidelines of a two-day summit, convened by Google in Sydney, with 50 industry identities invited to discuss ways of making digital start-ups a national priority. Matt Barrie, CEO of Sydney-based outsourcing firm freelancer.com, accuses Australians of being complacent about the technology industry and agrees education reform is needed. “We are just so complacent about building up these industries – one hundred per cent asleep at the wheel. “We don’t do anything about our school curriculum. While countries like the UK and Estonia are teaching their kids from primary school computer science, we are stuck with a backwards, antiquated system of education,” Barrie says. Barrie points to the rapid growth of Facebook and says Australians have the potential to develop similarly successful tech businesses, boosting both personal and national wealth. Michael Fox, co-CEO and co-founder of internet retail firm Shoes of Prey, agrees there is a shortage of tech skills in Australia. “The traditional thought [of parents] is ‘I want my son or my daughter to be a doctor or lawyer because there’s going to be lots of jobs in those industries’,” he says. “But if you come out as a really good graduate in computer science, we’ll hunt you down to give you a job, pay you a small fortune and we’ll provide you with an office environment that’s way better than working as a doctor or lawyer.” While the leaders in the tech industry bemoan
a skills shortage, there is good news at least for the Australian tourism industry. Our nation has finally reclaimed its national Twitter handle after a long battle with the person who registered the account years ago, but let it slip into dereliction. After months of trying, Tourism Australia has adopted the much-coveted @Australia handle, in a move which should give the nation’s social
@Australia in their tweets when referring to Australia – not knowing it was a dud account. It’s not clear if the account was even registered to an Australian. Tourism Australia, in the meantime, was forced to use the @SeeAustralia handle as its main consumer Twitter account. It was popular, attracting tens of thousands of followers. But experts agreed it had neither the reach nor marketing impact of @Australia. “The advantages of having a country handle are pretty obvious,” a Tourism Australia spokesman says. “@Sweden, @GreatBritain & @SouthAfrica are all managed by the country’s tourism boards. “We believe the added visibility will significantly help extend the reach on Tourism Australia’s consumer Twitter account.” Tourism Australia had long coveted @Australia and made numerous attempts to contact the or t sh ’s rg .o de Co owner of the dormant account to om A sc re en sh ot fr h ac Te t n’ Do s negotiate a transfer. LUXURY AND DARK CHOCOLATE IN FOR EASTER It’s the one time of year chocaholics can satisfy their sweet cravings without guilt. Chocolate consumption is expected to rise this Easter, with Aussies predicted to spend $185.7 million. Easter is the biggest holiday for the chocolate industry, with consumers splashing out 50 per cent more on chocolate than any other week, according to a spending forecast by business analysts IBISWorld. IBISWorld managing director Karen Dobie says good economic conditions mean consumers will opt for luxury brands. But indulgence will be reined in with a focus on

BREW A HEALTHY CUPPA There’s nothing like a nice, hot cup of tea when you need to unwind. It’s soothing to the soul, but it also has a remarkable wealth of antioxidants. All teas, whether black, green, oolong or white, are harvested from the leaves of a variety of plant known as the camellia sinensis. The primary distinction between the different teas is the amount of fermentation they undergo. Black teas are the most fermented, white teas the least. All true teas contain polyphenols, powerful antioxidants believed to protect against heart disease, certain cancers and stroke. Studies have shown that drinking green tea might boost metabolism, oolong teas can lower blood sugar and black teas can promote oral health. Tea contains half the caffeine of coffee. AAP

speakers and techniques for overcoming food cravings. “I know from personal experience that losing weight does not happen overnight. There is no single food or diet that can help you trim down and keep it off for life,” Sym says. “Put simply, crash diets don’t work. You need to change the way you think about food, how you eat and increase your physical activity if you want to become slim and healthy. “Without these changes you will simply bounce between different diets and never shift those stubborn kilos on a long-term basis. It’s disheartening and can ultimately lead to further weight gains and health problems.” Sym says the retreat will provide people with the tools they need for successful, lifelong weight loss in a supportive environment. “The secret to maintaining weight loss is staying motivated and keeping focused on the outcome, a slim healthy you,” she says. “Working out what you should
Annette Sym be eating can be daunting for many people, particularly if your diet has consisted of quick-fix foods, such as packaged snacks or takeaway meals. At the retreat participants will learn the tools to make informed healthy choices. “Breaking the cycle of old habits can also be difficult. Many people reach for their favourite comfort food when they are tired, stressed, depressed or lonely. All this and more will be addressed over these three life changing days,” Sym says. Are Anti-Depressants not working for you? Find out why! Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow? One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them.

The make-up artist to American actress and model Olivia Wilde has revealed the secret to getting the star’s smoky-eyed look. “I went with Wilde’s classic look, a sexy smoky eye, but kept it chic and fresh by incorporating metallics into the look,” Melanie Inglessis says. “To start I applied a primer over the lids so the shadow will adhere better and last longer.” She then traced both the top and bottom rims with a thick black line to create the shape of the smoky eye. “It doesn’t have to be perfect as it will be blended. The darker around the rim of the eyes, the sexier the eyes will look.” Inglessis created intensity by layering different shades and says thorough blending is the key. “Next I applied a dark cream shadow to fill the entire lid and create a base to which the powder eyeshadow will stick. I also used this colour on the bottom lash line to
Not as Happy as you used to be? Is Stress, Anxiety, Depression or Insomnia overwhelming you?
The cause has been found in the gut and seems to be widespread throughout the community. It is a malicious infection mainly picked up from travelling overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is often only detected in specialised testing. This infection has been shown to release a neuronal toxin, affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It has not often been associated with mental health conditions even
though studies are available showing its impact on the brain. It can be passed on from person to person very easily, and so more than one person in a household may be suffering from similar symptoms and both may be affected. Often, sufferers are able to correlate the f rst sign of symptoms, coinciding with a trip overseas where they experienced a tummy bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. Australia is so close to the Indonesian countries it can be transmitted from, and Australians travel there often for their holidays, so imagine the amount of people coming back who could be infected and how it can be passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work. Fortunately it is quite easy to address, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. I have seen patients who have suffered depression for four decades, and after treatment for one month have improved out of sight. Other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment. Bacterial infections are just one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating depression, anxiety or ADHD. We have successfully treated hundreds of patients within months of beginning treatment. These are not conditions with unknown cause like many believe, and can be resolved quickly.

The Thermage Face The procedure can help smooth and tighten your skin for an overall naturally younger looking appearance without surgery or injections.
What kind of results should I expect? Everyone can expect some collagen tightening. Many patients have seen • Smoother, tighter skin with less sagging • Redef ned contours along the jaw line and under the chin • Softening of wrinkles and f ne lines around the mouth, eyes and forehead • Tightening the saggy skin under the chin As you age, the collagen in your skin breaks down resulting in wrinkles and sagging skin. Thermage uses patented radio frequency (RF) technology to safely heat the deeper layers of your skin, stimulating existing collagen and promoting new collagen growth for younger looking skin.
How long will the results last? The effects continue to improve for up to six months following a single treatment. Results can last for years depending on your skin condition and natural aging process.
How long before I can return to my normal activities? There’s no special care needed after the procedure and most patients return to their regular activities immediately following treatment.

A DAY ON THE FARM
M WHERE: Maleny Dairies DATE: Saturday April 6, 9am to 2pm TICKETS: Free
aleny Dairies is holding a Family Farm Fun Day on Saturday April 6 to raise funds in support of local charity group SunnyKids. The family-owned farm will open its gates for the day and general manager Kay Hollyoak is inviting all local kids and their families to have a free, fun-filled day. “It’s going to be a day of great family fun, with loads of games and craft,” Hollyoak says. “It’s always good to have a heap of fun while you’re doing something worthwhile for the community. “As a family business, we’re really
focused on providing the best for our own kids so we chose to support SunnyKids – a local charity helping disadvantaged children and young people on the Coast. “We just want to help all kids be the best that they can be and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. If we can help SunnyKids achieve that goal, then the efforts are worth it,” she says. There will be egg and spoon races, gum boot throwing competitions and craft tables, along with the chance for kids to pat the farm animals and see how a real farm works.

The event will also feature live music from Cass Mitchell and Dave Workum and Cup Cake the Fairy from Not Just For Kids. There will also be $10 kids haircuts by Universal Hair and soccer demonstrations by Little Kickers.
Coisa Linda means ‘beautiful thing’ in Portuguese and is also the name of a fourpiece ensemble that makes joyful and vibrant Brazilian music. This Sunday the talented quartet will deliver a sophisticated and warm interpretation of some of Brazil’s most-loved musical repertoire. Go along and hear the exotic sounds of live samba and bossa nova and the f nest songs from Brazilian popular music. You’ll also hear a selection of original songs at Le Jazz Club’s Jazz in The Village Square at Palmer Coolum Resort.
SurfAir Tavern in Marcoola will kick off its new Sunday afternoon seafood smorgasbord this weekend. Liquid Management Group has taken over management of the venue and Chris Cameron says it is eager to provide a strong entertainment-based event for Coast locals. Cameron says starting this Sunday SurfAir tavern will be running the SurfAir Sunday Rock ‘n’ Roll Seafood Smorgasbord, which is an all-youcan-eat seafood buffet at $50 per head. “This will then be followed on this Sunday and every Sunday following with three free live bands,” Cameron says. “The bands will regularly rotate and are aimed at the 30 to 55 age group. The bands are all strong musicians and are South-East Queensland-based bands on their way up.”

o you’ve decided you want to buy a caravan, hit the open road and see Australia. Or you just want to invest in a portable holiday home for you and the family. Making that decision is the easy part, now you have to decide what to buy. For something that is generally considered a ‘simple’ holiday, the array of products to buy and places to go caravanning can be daunting. But don’t despair. Once you get your head around it, you’ll be hooked. Not all caravans are created equal. In fact there is more to caravanning than just caravans. The Caravan Camping & Touring Industry Association of New South Wales breaks down the vehicles and products into the following:
• “Camper trailers are low-profile caravans with a wind-up roof and usually push-out bed sections at either end of the trailer,” says the association. There are on- and off-road models and camper trailers range from simple structures to fully equipped versions with kitchens and dining areas. “They are a fantastic and cost effective way to hit the road.” • “Tent trailers are a cross between a caravan and a luxury tent,” says the association. “They are compact and popular for on and off-road. With canvas extensions, they can make quite a large and comfortable camping unit. Better yet, you’ll have all your gear set up in no time because tent trailers are so quick and easy to erect.”

“We We are absolutely thrilled with our FREE SPIRITT 18’ 18’, a er camping cam with our Tvan, we were ready to up-grade to some home comforts but were not quite ready to give up the adventure of ‘off-roading’. We discovered FREE SPIRIT and found what we had been searching for. The a en on to detail and the professional experience of the FREE SPIRIT team enhanced our design requirements. ecisions, decisions. Honda has offered its buyers quite a choice with its all-new CR-V soft-roader. For the f rst time, the popular SUV will be offered with two distinctive engines and drive conf gurations – and a range of prices. At one end of the spectrum, there’ll be the traditional set-up with on-demand all-wheel-drive, a 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine plus lots of features. That one will cost you well over $40-grand before you even get it on the road.
But for the budget conscious, Honda has rolled out a bargainbasement CR-V featuring, for the f rst time, two-wheel-drive, a smaller engine, less equipment, less ref nement and, as you might expect, a much-reduced pricetag. You can get into that one for well under $30-grand, even though at f rst glance it’s identical to the posher version. So picking a new CR-V is very much a Sydney-or-the-bush proposition these days. This clever little Honda has proven an enduring success story for the
Japanese manufacturer, so it’s somewhat surprising to see the recipe altered quite so markedly. Yes, it still boasts the same ref ned ride, thoughtfully designed interior and generous smattering of clever little knick-knacks that have made it a car beloved by its legion of buyers (and also this writer). Honda boasts this new CR-V is more aggressive in its styling and more aerodynamic in its design. And they can justif ably claim it is more fuel-eff cient than the previous model, continued page 38>
FEATURES 5-star ANCAP safety; stability control with traction control, rollover sensors, ABS with EBD; multi-function display; reversing camera, MP3capable audio with USB connectivity and Bluetooth; 4WD model adds auto headlights and wipers; HID active cornering headlights; electric sunroof, climate control; satellite navigation, rear parking sensors; electric seats, leather trim. THIRST 7.8L/100KM (2-litre engine); 8.7L/100km (2.4-litre engine). VERDICT An all-time favourite gets a bit better all around – with a cut-price entry point. BOTTOM LINE From $27,490 (2-litre, 2WD manual transmission); as tested $29,790 (2WD auto); $42,290 (2.4-litre 4WD); plus on-road costs.

<from page 36 as well as providing better sound insulation and safety features. All admirable stuff. But I was just a touch disappointed by the new CR-V, nonetheless. Like the third-generation CR-V it replaces, this new model is more of an evolution than a revolution. The high-end model remains an impressive and enjoyable machine to drive, but the less powerful, lesser-equipped entry-level model is not so satisfying. We drove the flagship 4WD VTi-L model and the entry-level 2WD VTi on consecutive weeks. While both have their undoubted attractions, each version disappointed in some way. Honda has stuck with the tried-and-tested five-speed auto, for instance, even though six or more speeds have become the norm for most leading manufacturers these days. The Honda five-speeder is still an acceptable device, but a decade or more is a long time to stick with the same basic format in this ultra-competitive segment. The 2.4-litre four-cylinder powerplant in the premium models is a familiar one to Honda drivers, but the same can’t be said of the 114 kilowatt, two-litre base model. Despite driving only two wheels instead of four, it really seems to struggle with the bulk and size of the CR-V. The decision to offer a two-wheel-drive version of the CR-V is a logical one – many class rivals have done the same in recent years and urban-based
buyers are choosing that configuration in growing numbers. But it’s a pity that a two-wheel drive version is not offered with the bigger engine, given the limitations of the two-litre powerplant. Still, there’s more than enough things to like about this updated and upgraded CR-V. Honda’s so-called Magic Seats, for instance, are a winner. Rather than just the seat back folding down, the seat base actually flips and tumbles forward into the foot well, allowing the seatback to lie completely flat and thus create a particularly useful cargo space when required. Honda boasts that the CR-V’s overall dimensions
have shrunk, yet the interior dimensions are unchanged. The engine-bay is smaller, giving added leg room and additional adjustment in steering wheel and seat positions, as well as improved frontal vision. As with other Hondas, the CR-V has found a clever way to encourage you to drive fuelefficiently, with a green glow emitting from the instrument panel when the onboard computer deems your driving style is good for the planet. It’s almost 20 years since the first CR-V was unveiled at the 1995 Tokyo motor show and in that time, more than five and a half million buyers (133,000 of them in Australia) have put this car in their driveway. That’s a successful record by anyone’s measure and no doubt the CR-V will continue to attract its share of buyers with this new and improved model. The cheaper version, with its sub-$28,000 price tag, will bring a new, less affluent array of potential buyers into the tent, too. It’s just a pity they won’t be getting the CR-V in its purest form.

GET ROAD READY
C
ar safety is not always top of the list when planning your Easter getaway. But Queensland’s peak motoring body is advising motorists to make safety a priority by planning journeys and preparing vehicles before setting off on a road trip. RACQ’s Brodie Bott says motorists can increase their safety on the roads with some simple preparation. “The Easter break is longer than usual this year and we expect it to be a busy time on the roads as people head off for a
much-needed break,” Bott says. “By following a few simple steps you can avoid some of the mishaps that can ruin a good holiday. “Firstly, it’s important to ensure your car is in good working order.” He advises travellers to check the lights are working, windows and tyres are in good condition and the oil is at the right level. Once you have sorted out the car’s safety features you need to think about packing it. “Pack your vehicle safely – make sure it’s not overloaded and that the driver can see through the rear window,” Bott says. “All items must be secured so that they won’t become missiles if the car brakes suddenly or is involved in a crash.” The next step is to plan the journey to allow plenty of time for regular rest stops – at least a 15-minute break every two hours. “Share the driving, if you can, and watch for signs of fatigue – drowsiness, lack of concentration or careless mistakes,” he says.

Car safety: preparing for your trip • Check the lights are working properly • Check the engine oil and coolant are at the right levels • Tyres should be in good condition and inf ated to the correct pressure • Make sure you have a spare tyre in good condition in case of puncture • Ensure your windscreen is clean and not chipped, scratched or cracked • Make sure the wipers and washers are working • Pack your vehicle safely – don’t overload and make sure the driver can see through the rear window • Ensure all items are secured • Plan to take regular breaks to avoid fatigue

What is the most common and expensive problem we see? It is the early failure of automatic transmissions due to lack of servicing – Often vehicle owners experience what they feel may be a transmission concern but are unsure. Addressing early warning signs rather than allowing them to evolve into a transmission failure will give you a better chance of avoiding cost and inconvenience of being without your car. If you are unsure call in and meet us and experience the Ron Hill Workshop providing professional general servicing and repairs. 44 Kayleigh Dr, Maroochydore

PERTH’S POSHEST HOME
IMAGES: AAP
One of Western Australia’s most historic and prestigious homes is up for sale for what could be one of the state’s highest ever property prices – an estimated $25 million. Chiritta, which dates back to the late 1890s, was built by Augustus Roe, the former police magistrate of Western Australia and the son of John Septimus Roe,WA’s original surveyor-general and one of the Perth’s founding fathers. The amazing 4080-square metre property boasts seven bedrooms, including an attic room, six bathrooms and two studies. But it is the blue-chip location of Peppermint Grove on the edge of the Swan River which could make Chiritta one of the most expensive houses in Perth’s history. In 2009, a Mosman Park property sold for $57.5 million – the highest price ever paid for a house in Australia at the time – and in 2007, a home in leafy Claremont sold for $23 million. The Peppermint Grove property is being sold by the founders of Channel 9 Perth, Ann and Denis Cullity, who bought the heritage-listed home 52 years ago from the Roe family. It also offers a grand formal drawing and dining rooms, a study, two offices, a sun room, a family room, an informal dining room and a five-car garage. AAP
WHITSUNDAY LUXURY

Mandalay House enjoys the best the Whitsundays has to offer, with spectacular turquoise Coral Sea waters on one side and untouched national park on the other. On a 4200-square metre block, the house boasts 2649 square metres of living space including formal dining and lounge rooms and six king-sized bedrooms with marble ensuites. The palatial, 144-square metre master bedroom has its own lounge and a walk-in dressing room. An oceanfront pavilion has dining space for 14 people, a marble bar and a wood-fired pizza oven. There is also dining for 12 in the climate-controlled cellar. There’s a large kitchen with adjoining casual dining room and there are a maid’s room, butler’s pantry and separate caretaker’s cottage, a large laundry and sewing room and a studio with courtyard. The wood-panelled office has a separate secretarial space and its own bathroom, media and library rooms. Other features include a cinema, gymnasium and pool rooms, a timber-panelled lift, multi-zoned air-conditioning, a desalination water maker and a private heli-pad 10 minutes’ flight from Hamilton Island Airport, of course. The home is listed through Unique Estates.
$25M BARBIE DREAMHOUSE Always wanted to buy a dream house? Last month one was for sale, but there was a catch – the house was virtual, so the lucky buyer couldn’t actually move in. As part of a tongue-in-cheek public relations campaign Barbie listed her iconic Malibu Dreamhouse for sale with celebrity real estate agent Josh Altman. Offered for $25 million, the three-storey pink palace featured one bedroom, one bathroom and the only unobstructed sea view in Malibu – because after all, the home has only three walls. Lori Pantel, vice president of global marketing for Barbie, says choosing to move out of the Dreamhouse is a sad decision for the doll. “It wasn’t an easy decision for Barbie to put her Dreamhouse on the market, but this move marks an unprecedented opportunity for her fans to get an inside look at her dreamy home,” Pantel says. An entertainer’s kitchen is finished with high-end European appliances, and opens to a large, open-plan lounge and spacious entertaining deck. The split-level home benefits from the generous use of natural construction materials,
including stone feature walls, overhead beams, granite benchtops and various timbers used in the flooring and railings. Along with high raked ceilings and a unique floorplan, these features add a sense of warmth and character. The home’s exterior and grounds have also been meticulously designed and maintained. The gardens have been extensively landscaped, retained and planted, and there’s also a generously sized level grassed playing area for children and pets. The current owners have recently completed some renovations and have added an inground pool. When combined with the large outdoor entertaining area, the property offers an enviable outdoor lifestyle well suited to the Sunshine Coast.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 You’re feeling generous and are keen to help others, but don’t promise more than you can practically deliver. Pay close attention to your dreams – are they trying to tell you something?
GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Your mind’s buzzing with creative ideas and new projects. So it’s the perfect day to broaden your mental horizons, as you communicate with family and friends.
CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 When it comes to work, make alterations that allow you to be more creative and independent. Perhaps you can change your professional routine?
LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Your hedonist side is highlighted as you yearn for good food and wine, chocolates and other tasty treats. You’re also in the mood to mix and mingle with friends.
VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 If you have to work this weekend, you’ll make good progress. Be careful how you communicate with others though – encouragement will get you further than criticism.
LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 With Venus and Mars in your relationship zone, it’s time to get up-closeand-personal with loved ones. Being proactive about solving problems is the key to positive partnerships.
SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Are you being intractable? Sometimes it’s a good idea to be a stubborn Scorpio and stick to your guns – but at other times it’s wise to adapt to the changing circumstances around you.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Don’t sit around waiting for your fortunes to change. With the moon in your adventure/aspirations zone, it’s up to spontaneous Sagittarians to get out there and make things happen!
Historically memorable (7) Energetically (4,1,4) Suffocate by submersion (5) Be very agitated (6) Say again (7) Being one of an incomplete pair (3) To fake (5) Hear rumour about (3,4,2) Attain by effort (7) Offspring (7) Compel (6) Slender candle (5) Odour (5) Mischievous child (3)
CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 It’s time to smarten up your living space, Be inspired by birthday great William Morris “Have nothing in your house which you know not to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Mighty Mars activates your adventurous and rebellious side but slow down before you come a cropper! Hasty, ill-considered moves now could lead to long regrets later on.
PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 You won’t improve your financial situation by thinking small. Brainstorming helps you find new ways to make money. The more you nurture work relationships, the happier you’ll be.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
Well I can report to anyone going to central Canada that there is plenty of spring snow coming! Now, as for the Sunshine Coast, it’s good to be home and yes I scored Double Island last Wednesday straight off the plane. This weekend, however, will be two to three foot and I would advise to hit it early as ESE winds are predicated later. Now is the time to look around as the sand has moved, creating some special banks. Be the f rst to f nd them not the last and send me any tips – I’ll keep it between us! Remember, the best surfer in the water is the one having the most fun.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: The estuary waters are f nally clearing and f shing is the better for it. Whiting are on the rising tide over almost any sand bank. Flathead are taking trolled lures and drifted live whiting along the northern banks near the mouth of the Maroochy River. Look out for mud crabs in the main channels in all coastal rivers. SURF: Catch chopper tailor at Pincushion right on dusk with frogmouth pilchards best. Whiting and bream are along North Shore using pippies and worms. A few dart can be found along most open beaches. OFFSHORE: Bait schools are scattering as sharks and mackerel feed from Currimundi to Coolum. The lead-up to the full moon during Easter should produce a good mixed bag of reef f sh as far out as the Barwon Banks, if conditions allow. FRESHWATER: Most impoundments are improving, with golden perch and bass on live shrimps and deep-diving lures with Somerset Dam working from The Hump to Red Rock. Head to Lake Baroon for spangled perch and small bass – this f shing is great fun for the kids.
