y child will be celebrating his sixth birthday this year but I still f nd myself blaming ‘baby brain’ for momentary memory lapses. We’ve all been there, though – we are introduced to a client at a business function and promptly forget his name, we walk conf dently into one room of the house from another to retrieve something only to say ‘why did I come in here again?’, we try to recall the PIN on a bank account we’ve had for 10 years and it slips from our grasp. Or maybe that’s just me. Anyway, I wonder if the modern world isn’t making us all forget stuff – who needs to remember anything with Google at our fingertips? I find any news about the brain to be quite interesting, and if you do too, you’ll enjoy our cover story this week, about just that. We have been looking into how our brains
M
] create and store memories, how music has such a powerful connection with memory and how our brains repair themselves if they become damaged. Want to know more about your grey matter? Turn over the page for some food for thought. Speaking of food, in palate this week we have a yummy haloumi recipe and some more food news. Head over to page 36 for that. We’ve got plenty of local news, which starts on page 18, and the MWP fashion hounds have returned with three pages of style this week. I love shopping for winter clothes and if you do too, hit page 33 before you hit the shops. For our property cover story we are exploring Buderim – one of the Coast’s most stylish suburbs – and a town that seems to have a permanently robust property market. For that and more on real estate, turn to My Property Preview, starting on page 45.

Brain power PREVIEW Exciting new developments in neuroscience reveal intriguing insights into how our brains create and store memories. WORDS AAP

he human brain is often likened to the most complex computer system on earth. Responsible for regulating bodily processes such as breathing and digestion, and allowing us to see, hear and speak, the brain also controls our consciousness – thoughts, emotions and memories. The link between the brain and mind is complex and not fully understood, despite
scientists and researchers dedicating years to understanding how we think and remember. While this research is hugely important for those suffering from neurological conditions, it’s also fascinating for the average person concerned with how to keep the mind sharp as we age. Some of the most interesting research is in the area of memory – how we develop and maintain it, and the techniques we can use to strengthen it over time.
Memory like a sieve? British scientists have offered an insight into why we forget people’s names only for them to return hours later. Scientists have observed that in all animals, memories that can be recalled several hours after learning them may become inaccessible for brief periods after their formation. Although it is not fully understood why such lapses happen, it is believed to be because they are a necessary part of the brain’s process to consolidate memories. University of Sussex neuroscientists have now discovered that causing a disturbance during these memory lapses disrupts the process and appears to prevent the memories being formed. One of the experts involved in the study, Dr Ildiko Kemenes, says, “Scientists have long wondered why the brain shows these memory lapses. Here we showed that lapses in memory coincide with periods when consolidation of memory is susceptible to disturbances from outside the memory network. “Changes in the molecular pathways underlying consolidation are responsible for these periods of vulnerability.” Kemenes and colleagues introduced snails to an unfamiliar substance during feeding so that the animals would learn to recognise it as food. When they were fed later, scientists found the snails responded to the stimulus, with memory lapses after 30 minutes and two hours, before the memory became consolidated at about four hours. But if the snail received another different stimulus during the memory-lapse periods, the memory consolidation became disrupted, it was discovered. “The brain has a restricted capacity to learn things and preventing some memory formation would be a way to avoid overload,” says Kemenes. The best brain-boosting foods A Mediterranean-style diet packed with f sh, chicken and olive oil and low on fatty dairy products and meat may lower the risk of memory problems later in life, a large US study says. But the benef cial effects of eating a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids do not extend to people with diabetes, according to the research published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The f ndings, described as the largest study of its kind to date, were based on dietary information from 17,478 AfricanAmerican and Caucasian people with an average age of 64. In healthy people, those who regularly ate a Mediterranean-type diet were 19 per cent less likely to develop problems in their thinking and memory skills than people who did not eat that way. “Diet is an important modif able activity that could help in preserving cognitive functioning in late life,” says Georgios Tsivgoulis, a doctor with the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of Athens, Greece. “However, it is only one of several important lifestyle activities that might play a role in late-life mental functioning. “Exercise, avoiding obesity, not smoking cigarettes and taking medications for conditions like diabetes and hypertension are also important.” M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

MUSICAL MEMORIES Music therapy is helping to lessen the impact of dementia. Margaret Torrance often plays the piano for a rapt audience, reeling off one note-perfect tune after another without so much as a glance at a sheet of music. She also has trouble remembering her daughter’s name, does not know she has grandchildren and struggles to hold a conversation lasting longer than a few minutes. Torrance is 81 and was diagnosed with vascular dementia four years ago. She has been in a care home since July 2010. A talented pianist, she regularly plays for other residents on the piano which she and her husband bought in the 1950s and which her daughter, Jan, gave to the home so her mother could continue doing what she loved. Torrance’s talent is remarkable, but the fact that she remains able to play music despite suffering from advanced dementia is not. It is well documented that the capacity to remember music – whether it’s the ability to play an instrument or recite the lyrics to our favourite song – remains one of the last to leave us. Dr Vicky Williamson is a research fellow at Goldsmith’s University in London, who specialises in the relationship between music and memory. She explains that in physiological terms, it is unsurprising that the two are so closely linked. “There are very direct, close connections between the music that we like – which activates these emotion and reward sensors – and your hippocampus, which is where all your emotions are stored,” she says. Even those in advanced stages of dementia are still likely to remember music learned as a child or teenager, as memory loss tends to work backwards, eroding the most recent memories first.
As a result of the strong relationship between music and memory, singing, playing an instrument or just hearing a familiar tune can all have a therapeutic effect on dementia sufferers. For Torrance, music is a way of managing her condition, calming her when she becomes distressed or disoriented. “There were times when Mum was very anxious to get out of the home,” says daughter Jan. “She thinks a lot about her mum and dad and talks about them all the time, and has spells where she’s very unsettled and wants to get out. The piano is a way of diverting her. It really helps.” With a growing elderly population, dementia is a particular concern in Australia, where a person is
difficulty communicating and reasoning, and dramatic mood swings – and so can also be part of other neurological conditions such as Huntington’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. There’s currently no cure and, when dementia is diagnosed, nobody can tell you precisely how things will progress. While one person may be lucid for several years before beginning to deteriorate, another may be in a care home within months. It can be extremely difficult to live with, and one of the cruellest aspects of the disease is memory loss. Sufferers of late-stage dementia forget the names and faces of their dearest family members and cannot understand where they are or why they are there. Unable to express this frustration, they can become angry and aggressive. Traditional treatment involves drugs to try to alleviate symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease, but their effects are limited. Music therapy is increasingly becoming a legitimate way of managing dementia. “There’s growing convincing evidence which means that people are starting to take notice of music therapy,” says Williamson. Helping rekindle a sense of connection is just one of the many benefits music therapy can hold – making it a comfort for relatives as well as an important therapy for patients. Not all dementia sufferers will have access to music therapy, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t benefit from music. Simply listening to a song with emotional significance can have a positive effect and bring back memories. continued over>
Even those in advanced stages of dementia are likely to remember music learned as a child or teenager, as memory loss tends to work backwards diagnosed with dementia every six minutes. According to Alzheimer’s Australia it affects more than 1.5 million people – more than 321,000 sufferers and their 1.2 million carers. The condition also costs Australia billions every year and is predicted to outstrip spending on any other health condition within the next 50 years. There are two main kinds of dementia – vascular dementia, which is caused by problems with the blood supply to the brain, and Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common form. However, ‘dementia’ technically describes a set of symptoms – including memory loss,

Delving deeper into brain function A trio of Australian and American scientists have made a discovery that could radically change the understanding of how the brain repairs itself. They have shown that other parts of the brain take over to compensate for lost function if there is damage to the hippocampus, a part of the brain responsible for learning and memory. These parts are often far from the damaged site. The research could lead to important advances in the treatment of accident and stroke victims, as well as those living with Alzheimer’s disease. “Until now, we’ve been trying to figure out how to stimulate repair within the hippocampus. Now we can see other structures stepping in, and whole new brain circuits coming into being,” says Dr Bryce Vissel from Sydney’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research. “It’s truly exciting.” Vissel played a key role in helping to identify the brain pathways and structures involved after two US scientists made a surprising discovery that

rats are able to learn new tasks after damage to the hippocampus. Vissel’s team worked with Dr Moriel Zelikowsky and Dr Michael Fanselow to identify the exact regions of the brain that take over. Their breakthrough is published in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the Academy of Science (PNAS), the journal of the US National Academy of Sciences. Fanselow says all complex behaviours involve multiple parts of the brain, with one region’s message affecting how another region will respond. “The brain is heavily interconnected.” He says once scientists understand why one pathway is chosen over another, they will be able to encourage pathways to take over when they need to, especially in the case of brain damage. “I expect the brain probably has to be trained through experience,” Fanselow says. “Behaviour creates molecular changes in the brain. We can try to facilitate those changes through behaviour and drug therapy. “Future treatments are not going to be all behavioural or all pharmacological, but a combination of both,” he adds. “It’s probable that the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers are already compensating for damage and this discovery has significant potential for extending that compensation,” Vissel says.

Sunshine Coast Council has received an award of excellence for planning in landscape architecture at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architect Awards. The council received the recognition for its unique consultation and planning process for the PLACE+ Beerwah project. Councillor Greg Rogerson says the project uses Place Making principles, which aim to build better communities and create better places to live by focusing on long-term commitments to people, places and partnerships. The AILA Awards recognise Australia’s most innovative and visionary landscape architecture projects in six categories. The Maroochy Arts and Ecology Centre and Noosa Junction Station were also finalists in their categories.

PLAN TO MAKE COAST MAJOR FOOD EXPORTER he Sunshine Coast Council has welcomed the Federal Government’s National Food Plan to boost the region’s food exports. Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Joe Ludwig, says the Food Plan is a “road map” to create new opportunities for the future of our food from paddock to plate. “Australia’s food is the envy of the world, as we produce more than twice the food we consume,” he says. “We need to remain focused on finding new markets for our high-quality exports.” The Plan features 16 goals including $28.5 million to increase the value of food exports to Asia and $2 million to develop Australia’s own trusted and recognised food brand. A Sunshine Coast Council economic development spokesman says the National Food Plan is a welcome initiative to support

export activities on the Sunshine Coast. “Late last year, Sunshine Coast Council undertook an export survey here on the Coast to identify current export activity,” he says. “It identified a number of companies exporting a range of confectionery, native foods, dog foods, seafood, gluten-free grain products, along with organic wine and alcoholic spirits, as well as processed/packaged foods. “Agri-business is a key sector earmarked for development in the Draft Economic Development Strategy 2013-2033, as the Sunshine Coast is already known for its clean, high-quality niche food industry.” The importance of the sector
is underlined through the council’s Rural Futures Strategy. The council also supports the Seasons of the Sun movement, which brings many of the Coast’s food industry members together under one brand.
The prof ts from Bli Bli State School’s annual trivia night will go towards buying computer equipment for the school. Bli Bli State School has only about 500 students and the trivia and auction night is the P&C’s biggest fundraiser for 2013. Fundraising co-ordinator Erin Clark is hoping to raise $10,000. Clark says plenty of sponsors have come on board with prize donations, but she welcomes other supporters. The movie-themed night will feature a silent auction, prizes for the best-dressed table and a licensed bar. The trivia night will be held on July 27, with Jamie Dunn as the MC. Tickets are $15. Bookings are essential. Call Sonia on 5458 2145 to book or for more information.

Jobs for local students
PHOTO: BEN VOS
Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson will visit local schools to raise awareness about future job opportunities at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. “I am passionate about creating career paths for the Coast’s young people through quality job creation and the tertiary educational means of attaining these jobs, right here on the Sunshine Coast,” Jamieson says. In August he will begin visiting secondary schools to talk to years eight, nine and 10 students about the opportunities that will emerge from the building of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. “Importantly, these students need to be hearing about these opportunities now, in order to decide on which trade or university qualifications they might seek to gain,” he says. “While up to 2000 jobs are being created during the construction phase, some 3500 people will be working at the hospital when it opens in 2016, rising to 6000 by 2021.
Mark Jamieson “It would be the greatest travesty if we did not begin to prepare now a qualified workforce to meet this demand, due in only three years’ time. “Health and medical jobs are far less susceptible to economic fluctuations, so it’s fair to say these are jobs for life.” Jamieson is encouraging students and their parents to think about the careers that will flow from the hospital and the surrounding Oceanside Kawana Health Precinct.
JAMES HALLIDAY’S TOP CELLARING SELECTIONS OF 2013
7 Biggest Mistakes you could be making that could cause Permanent Depression, Anxiety or ADHD Are you not as happy as you used to be? Is stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, or ADHD overwhelming you? Are anti-depressants not working for you? Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow? We had an incredible response from all who were logged on for the webinar we ran about one of my favourite topics – Solving the puzzle that creates Anxiety Depression & ADHD. When you put it all together, it all makes sense. There are 7 key underlying triggers which can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them.
The 7 key common triggers that affect your brain, cause a compounding effect that your brain cannot deal with, which leads to long term, and then permanent brainwave pattern changes, affecting your personality, mood, and ability to think and cope, permanently! Fortunately it can be quite easy to address. Patients who have suffered depression for four decades, have reported to have improved out of sight after one month and other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment, including sufferers of Major Depressive Disorder, and children with ADHD, who have then been able to reduce their medication in less than 7 weeks, and these results are permanent and medication free! Proven with testing, these steps improve brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication, in adults and children. To f nd out more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or view the webinar on our website. A webinar is simply a seminar that you can see on the internet. You just register through the website and it will play for you on your computer. It’s easy and it’s free. Register now for 7 Steps to Freedom from Anxiety, Depression & ADHD at www. advancedwellness.com.au.

netball in this country gets the same recognition as in New Zealand, or when stories in the sporting columns about women outnumber those about animals. “This is just one step in that process to celebrate the fantastic female [sportspeople] this country and indeed this region produces.” The event is sponsored by Butler McDermott Lawyers, the Nambour RSL Club and Elegant Affair. Nambour RSL Club general manager Suzanne Long says the club is a big supporter of many community and sporting organisations and this is an opportunity to boost the awareness of sport as a whole. “It is vital to nurture future generations of sporting heroes and instil in them an appreciation

New residents create their own jobs A scarcity of job opportunities is not deterring some people from re-locating to the Coast – instead they are buying businesses. Savvy Business Sales principal Rod Russell says while the Coast offers one of the best lifestyles in Australia, finding a job here can be a challenge. “The lack of large employment projects in manufacturing and mining-related industries make the job market tight,” Russell says. Colin Smith moved to Australia
from South Africa in 2008. He spent a few years in Brisbane before discovering the Sunshine Coast when visiting friends and immediately decided it was the place to be. He was 59 when he and his wife Judy moved to the Coast and after many job applications he eventually got work selling home and land packages. But he wasn’t enjoying it and wanted to move on. “I sent my resume out to hundreds of people and I never even got a response,” he

MORE DEBRIS THAN PEOPLE rom toothbrushes to balloons, there are more than f ve pieces of ocean rubbish for every person in the country. Our oceans and beaches are covered in rubbish with plastic making up nearly three-quarters of marine debris, a CSIRO-led survey, which is the first of its kind in the world, has found. The majority of rubbish is found near major population centres but ocean currents are pushing a lot of it far from our cities. There are 5.2 pieces of debris for every person in Australia and on beaches there are 3.2 pieces of rubbish for every metre of beach. CSIRO research scientist Dr Denise Hardesty says there is a misconception the rubbish is coming from other countries. “Even in this developed country where we have really great waste management practices, we go to our beaches and we think they are pristine and clean and beautiful, but we are finding lots of rubbish everywhere,” she says. “Our rubbish is coming from us. It
F
is coming from our cities and our major areas. “It much more likely that the debris we are finding on our beaches we are sending off to other countries and other places.” Recently, as Hardesty was completing the project in western Tasmania, she found a fishing crate with Sydney Fish Market printed on it. She says the rubbish has an impact on all sorts of sea creatures including turtles, sea birds and whales. Researchers began collecting data 18 months ago north of Cairns and continued around Australia’s 35,000km coastline. AAP
Are you hot or not? Australians are using Instagram to compare how sexy they are, according to a 12-month study of more than three million images posted on the photography app. The research, by ad agency The Works and the University of Technology Sydney, also found Instagram is Australia’s fastestgrowing social media site – with an estimated 1.08 million users, each posting at least two pictures a week. That compares with Facebook’s recent claim to have 12 million active Australian users and estimates by respected Sydney-based Vivid Social agency that Twitter has at least 2.16 million users. But while those sites are often used for social networking purposes, Instagram is being used by many Australians simply to take pictures of themselves – with the results then being used to rate their looks and bodies. “Selfies [pictures taken of oneself] are more than just the ‘me’ culture and narcissism – there is a lot of benchmarking happening,” says The Works creative director Douglas Nicol.
“People want to know how they rate in terms of hotness and body image versus complete strangers. It’s effectively gamifying your body.” Selfies were found to be the most popular type of pictures shared by Instagram users in Sydney, the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. In Melbourne, the most popular type of picture was of food, while in Darwin and Canberra it was scenic shots. In Adelaide, the most popular type of pictures were artistic, while in Perth it was portraits of others. AAP

asty dragonf y and grilled cricket accompanied by roast beetle or barbecued cicada: all of this and more could be on the menu of the future, in the view of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome. Insects are already part of the daily diet for many in Africa, Asia and Latin America, particularly when meat and fish are scarce and expensive. The UN agency is now calling for people in the West to get over their disgust at the thought of eating these protein-rich creatures and for the creation of more ‘insect farms’ in South-east Asia among other places. Until now, international trade in edible insects has been insignificant. With hundreds of millions of people going hungry around the world, the FAO is supervising research into the almost 2000 edible insects known on Earth.

While around two billion of the world’s population have insects as part of their regular diet – including bees, ants, caterpillars and aquatic bugs – these are found in Europe and North America only in exotic markets and on the plates of immigrant communities. The consumer, politicians and investors need to be made aware through information campaigns of the advantages of eating insects, the FAO believes. “Insects produce fewer greenhouse gases and ammonia than cattle and pigs. They need considerably less land and water,” the FAO says. Growing them on special farms would also create ecologically sustainable jobs. Insects are a good source of unsaturated fatty acids, iron, minerals and vitamins. Another advantage is that these creatures are frequently collected or cultivated in areas where pesticides are not used, particularly in forests. The Thais reportedly eat maggots, locusts, cockroaches and various other things as snacks, usually fried and often enjoyed with a beer. Convincing the affluent West to change the habits of generations looks to be a long-term project, but Bangkok is the place to start for those keen to give it a try. DPA

Vitamin D linked to high blood pressure Low levels of vitamin D can trigger high blood pressure, a new study shows. British scientists have demonstrated a direct genetic link between lacking the ‘sunshine’ vitamin and hypertension, or high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart attacks and stroke. The study suggests vitamin D supplements may help at-risk patients avoid heart and artery disease. Vitamin D is mainly made in the skin as a reaction to sunlight, but may also be obtained from foods such as oily fish, eggs and fortified breakfast cereal. But some people are less able than others to turn ‘raw’ vitamin D into its biologically active form. The researchers looked for genetic markers linked to higher or lower levels of metabolised vitamin D. They found that for every 10 per cent increase in concentrations of the 25-hydroxyvitamin form of vitamin D, the risk of developing high blood pressure fell by 8.1 per cent. The findings were presented at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics in Paris, France. Inadequate levels of vitamin D are common throughout the western world. A lack of vitamin D in childhood can lead to rickets, which causes long bones to weaken.
whales, you won’t miss a minute of the action. Whether you are watching whales at play or simply enjoying the sun and the views off Mooloolaba, make sure you bring your camera and don’t miss the
A number of other conditions may also be related to vitamin D deficiency, including mental impairment, auto-immune diseases and cancer. Lead scientist Vimal Karani, from the Institute of Child Health at University College London, says the study strongly suggests some cases of cardiovascular disease could be prevented through vitamin D supplements or food fortification. “Our new data provide further support for the important non-skeletal effects of vitamin D. We now intend to continue this work by examining the causal relationship between vitamin D status and other cardiovascular disease-related outcomes,” Karani says. PA

he Aussie stock market has been experiencing a mild correction over the past couple of weeks, with (at the time of writing) the benchmark ASX200 index down around nine per cent from its yearly high. The Australian dollar has also weakened significantly against the US dollar, down to $0.95 from more than $1.02 at the start of May. The increasing commentary of a reduction in the US quantitative easing (QE) program has exacerbated these falls. This talk intensified on May 21 after Ben Bernanke said the program could be wound back once the jobs outlook “improves in a real and sustainable way”. Some economists think this

could mean as soon as September. The talk about QE withdrawal comes with softer-than-expected US economic data, with employment, housing and consumer sentiment all disappointing. The QE program has to a certain extent been responsible for the asset reflation we have seen in global markets after the GFC, and hence the current market nervousness in the US. On the domestic front, we have also had a run of weak economic data of late. March quarter GDP was reported at 0.6 per cent which is well below trend, and well below expectations (consensus was 0.7 per cent). Without a substantial increase in net exports, the Australian economy would have contracted in the March quarter. The other area of strength was the household sector. The slowdown in mining investment is punctuated by the fact that final demand in WA for the March quarter fell by 3.9 per cent. We expect economic growth will remain sluggish through 2013 and more than likely into 2014. The likelihood of rising joblessness may mean further RBA rate cuts in an attempt to transition the economy from its current dependence on mining investment. The combination of these factors leads us to believe that equity markets are likely to remain somewhat volatile in the coming weeks and months, and further downside can’t be ruled out. We advocate conservatively positioned portfolios, with perhaps higher-than-average exposures to defensive assets such as cash, term deposits and fixed income. In terms of specific securities, we see value in select companies that will benefit from a lower Australian dollar such as Brambles, Sims Metal and Westfield Group. On the fixed interest side, we see value in selected high-grade credit, such as some of the listed floating rate hybrids.

Caring for Vietnam’s ‘invisible’ disabled THE VIETNAM WAR MAY BE LONG GONE, BUT ITS ONGOING EFFECTS HAVE CREATED ONE OF THE HIGHEST CHILD DISABILITY RATES IN THE WORLD.
T
he six-day-old baby with excessive f uid in the brain was left outside an orphanage in Hanoi – just one of thousands of disabled children to have been abandoned in Vietnam. The communist country of 89 million has some of the highest rates of child disability in the world – the legacy of decades of war, including use of defoliant Agent Orange – but experts say it is not equipped to provide adequate care. At the Bo De Pagoda orphanage, where the baby was abandoned last month, dozens of disabled children – from teenagers with Down syndrome to two-month-old blind babies – are cared for by a team of 34 volunteers. “The parents leave the kids at the pagoda gate or abandon them at hospitals,” says volunteer Nguyen Thi Thanh Hue. “With the more severely disabled ones, the families bring them here when they simply can’t care for them anymore.” Hanoi says up to three million Vietnamese people were exposed to dioxin in Agent Orange, and that one million suffer grave health repercussions today, including at least 150,000 children born with birth defects.
50% OFF
Disabled children are among the most marginalised in the world, facing bullying and other discrimination, according to a UN report launched earlier this month in the Vietnamese city of Danang – a dioxin ‘hotspot’ where victim groups say rates of cancer and birth deformities are higher than the national average. Vietnam has roughly 20,000 children in institutional care and more than half are disabled, according to UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) executive director Anthony Lake. “Kids in institutions simply aren’t getting the kind of stimulus and, I don’t want to sound too sentimental, but love, that allows the brain to develop for the rest of their lives,” he says. Even outside institutional care, life is a daily struggle for Vietnam’s disabled children. Linh Chi’s family say her grandfather was exposed to Agent Orange during the war. She was born with no limbs and is often stared
at and sometimes bullied at school. “I just wish our community could pay her a bit of attention. It would boost her self-esteem. Now she feels so different from everyone else,” her mother Trinh Ngoc Thuy tells AFP by telephone from Yen Bai province where they live. “I really find it hard to answer her questions like, ‘Why am I like this?’ ‘Why don’t I have arms and

legs?’ ‘When will my arms get longer?’” she says. The family has received minimal support from Vietnamese authorities and says surviving on the family’s joint income – she and her husband both work – of four million dong (about $2000) a month is hard.

One-year-old twin boys Cu Huy Anh and Cu Hao Anh are cared for by the Bo De Pagoda orphanage volunteers.
Caring for a child with a disability places “an incredible burden” on families, UNICEF’s Lake says. The UN report argues the solution is to change attitudes to disability and support families to help include them in society rather than to institutionalise children. “There is no group of children who are not just left behind but nearly invisible as much as children with disabilities,” Lake says. UNICEF has a pilot scheme in Danang to provide day care to children with disabilities, which if successful could be expanded. The communist government has publicly committed
to help the country’s disabled population, which it says numbers 6.7 million, but does not break out age groups. Vietnam, which has signed but not ratified the UN convention on the rights of persons with disabilities, is also looking at piloting cash benefits to support families with disabled children next year, Lake says. In the meantime, families must cover costs and take on the burden of care, such as that of Nguyen Phuong Anh, who has osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bone disease, leaving her wheelchair bound. Phuong Anh’s mother gave up her job to care for
her disabled daughter, and has become ‘her legs’ in order to allow the 16-year-old to attend a normal state-run school and live a full and active life. “It is still hard because … the facilities and the platform at public school are not made for people in wheelchairs. That’s a fact in Vietnam and I just really hope for that to change,” she says. Phuong Anh recently appeared as a contestant on Vietnam’s version of the Got Talent television show, and says she hopes to use her local celebrity to change attitudes in her country. “The most important thing is for other people to treat us equally,” she says. New app measures booze content Australian winemakers have launched a free new app that allows users to measure exactly how much alcohol they’re drinking. The Wine Line tool, which is said to be a world first, works by the users pointing their iPhone cameras at a glass of wine and tracing an outline of the liquid. The software then calculates how many standard drinks (10 grams of alcohol in Australia) are
in the glass – allowing users to keep track of how much they’ve consumed over a single session. “Research has shown that there is a chronic lack of understanding in the general public on this topic, with 86 per cent of Australians unsure of what constitutes a standard drink,” according to winemakers Jacob’s Creek. The company’s premium wine brands CEO Jean-Christophe Coutures says he hopes the app
INSPIRED
will help promote responsible drinking. “We see it as our responsibility as a major producer of wine not only to communicate on this important topic, but to think creatively and develop innovative offerings to consumers,” he says. The app works on 70 popular wines available in Australia and is said to use augmented reality technology to help gauge alcohol content. AAP

Australians throw out $1000 worth of food a year If Australians stopped throwing away food they’d signif cantly help the environment – and save themselves $1000 per year. “Food waste is one of the single biggest environmental problems that we have in the world,” says environmentalist Jon Dee. “Here in Australia we do not give it enough attention.” Australians throw away one out of every five bags of groceries they buy – or, conservatively, $1036 worth of food per household per year, according to DoSomething, an umbrella organisation running campaigns such as FoodWise. With many Australians struggling to meet everyday living costs, it’s surprising that so much food is being tossed, Dee says. “When everyone is whingeing about electricity prices it’s astonishing that we are throwing away vast amounts of food. “We don’t look to use up the food we have in our kitchen before we go out shopping, we don’t do basics like writing shopping lists and when we bring food home we don’t

store it properly so it goes off before it needs to. “We also don’t keep track of use by and best before dates and we cook portions that are often bigger than they need to be.” As a result, Australians are wasting $8 billion worth of edible food every year.

$45 2 Course
• Make a shopping list: planning is a key part of any good approach to food. • Use clear airtight storage containers: having a collection of airtight containers – clear are great so you can see what’s inside when you open your fridge – can hugely extend the life of your leftovers. • Buy an efficient fridge: as well as saving you money on your electricity bill, an efficient fridge and freezer will prolong the life of your food by maintaining a steady environment. • Use a measuring cup: something as basic as a measuring cup will also keep your meals at a manageable size. • Have a sense of adventure: by being unafraid to try new things with the ingredients we have to hand, we can become better cooks and save some serious money at the same time. THIRST 9.6l/100km combined cycle.
WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP eing part of a famous family can have its good and bad sides. The rough part, of course, is that you’re always being compared to your parents or siblings, particularly if they’re more successful or better known than you. The Land Rover Freelander 2 knows about this more than most. It’s not easy when your uncle is

a Range Rover and your big brother is the all-conquering Land Rover Discovery – the vehicles of choice for anyone who’s anyone back in England – including the Royal family. Lately, the poor old Freelander has had to watch as its pretty new cousin, the Range Rover Evoque, has sashayed along and swept everybody off their feet with its supermodel looks.
But here’s the good part about having all those famous family members: you get to pinch their stuff. And with the recently updated Freelander 2, Land Rover has borrowed heavily from the family goody basket. For a start, there’s an all-new four-cylinder engine, lifted straight out of the sleek, sexy Evoque and continued page 42>

plonked into the Freelander 2. The Freelander also has a new, upmarket interior, thanks again to various bits borrowed from the Evoque and Discovery. It even has an ‘intelligent’ pushbutton park brake that adjusts the brake force according to the slope the car is parked on. The brake can also be used for emergency stops, selecting the most stable braking method if the car’s primary brakes fail, and employing skid prevention techniques to bring it safely to a stop. The Freelander also gets a clever ‘Say What You See’ voice activation system, which uses visual prompts on the display screen to allow you to perform functions without taking your hands off the wheel. A new centre console includes a seven-inch colour monitor which displays your satellite navigation instructions and doubles as a reversing camera with a special ‘Hitch Assist’ graphic to help you attach your tow bar to a boat or trailer. Useful stuff for an off-roader such as this one. The Freelander gets an upgraded
version of the Terrain Response all-wheel-drive system, perfected on the likes of the Range Rover and Discovery. Our test vehicle, the $55,000 SE model, also came with plush leather trim, electrically adjustable seats, plus a glorious Meridian sound system. Like its big brother models, the Freelander gets Land Rover’s Intelligent Power Management System, which optimises the way the alternator charges the battery for maximum fuel efficiency. The biggest change, though, is the new engine, called the SI4 GTDi, which replaces a heavier, clunkier V6 engine. That means the Freelander gains extra power at the same time as shedding about 40 kilograms in weight, with a substantial jump in its levels of performance. We’d previously tested the Freelander only in turbo-diesel form – adequate without being inspiring, but with decent performance, pulling power and fuel efficiency. The new petrol version emits 177 kilowatts and 340 Newton
Overseas model metres of torque to give the Freelander a punchy 0 to 100 kilometres per hour acceleration time of 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 200 kilometres per hour, plus a pared-back thirst of 9.6 litres per 100 kilometres. That’s not bad for a biggish SUV. It jumps off the line quickly, revs freely and rarely feels
short of torque or mid-range punch. The six-speed auto is a good one – smooth on the upshifts and intuitive enough to always feed the correct ratio through the drivetrain. Standard equipment on the SE includes seven airbags, parking radar, six-disc CD changer and dual-zone climate control. Cruise control, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights complete a very smart interior package for this price range. The Freelander’s off-road ability gives it an edge in this company, allowing the car to adapt to a variety of road surfaces. The Terrain Response system is supported by Dynamic Stability Control, Electronic Traction Control and ABS, plus Hill Descent Control and Gradient Release. All in all, a competent and ever-improving package. Does it mean we’ll see any members of the Royal family suddenly driving around in a Freelander 2? Probably not. Except for Fergie. Now there’s someone who knows how hard it can be fitting into a posh family.
The new Golf has just arrived. Why drive anything else? Take the new Volkswagen Golf for a test drive and you’ll discover it’s in a class of its own. Redesigned from bonnet to boot, the Golf comes with a new range of powerful and fuel-efficient TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines, eco-friendly BlueMotion Technology, advanced safety systems including 7 airbags and Driver Fatigue Detection plus Bluetooth® Connectivity as standard. It’s even been awarded World Car of the Year 2013.

] A trip down memory lane
MY MOTORING INSIDER The latest news from MWP’s man on the ground.
New car sales slowing The historical battle between Holden and Ford has been replaced by Corolla and Mazda3. Official figures have confirmed the Toyota Corolla has overtaken Mazda3 to become Australia’s top-selling vehicle this year. The Toyota HiLux was the biggest selling vehicle for the month. The Commodore (in run-out mode) was edged out of the top 10 for the first time, beaten by Mitsubishi’s Outlander. Toyota, market leader for 10 years in a row, has doubled its sales lead so far this year. Official figures show the record growth of the new car market has slowed significantly. Year to date sales are up 4.5 per cent but May was only 0.7 per cent better than the same month last year.
Nissan’s sales continued to tank after its strong surge in March and it was only 400 deliveries ahead of Volkswagen. Honda and Subaru sold almost identical numbers. June sales are in full swing with strong deals across nearly all brands and with dealers overstocked, June numbers are expected to be strong. Top 5 cars in May 2013 (according to VFACTS) Toyota HiLux: 3665 (year to date: 15,790) Toyota Corolla: 3640 (year to date: 16,774) Mazda3: 3054 (year to date: 16,405) Mitsubishi Triton: 2606. Hyundai i30: 2512.
Two travel writers for Lonely Planet Traveller magazine are driving from London to Istanbul in a MINI Cooper D Clubman in celebration of the publisher’s origins. It is the first leg of an epic journey spanning more than 16,000 kilometres across Europe, Asia and Australasia in celebration of Lonely Planet’s 40th birthday. Lonely Planet co-founders Tony and Maureen Wheeler began their London to Sydney trip in 1972 in a classic Morris Mini Traveller and that trip led to the start of their iconic travel publishing company. The car had a top speed of 70 miles per hour. The 2013 MINI cooper D Clubman, which the travel writers are driving to Istanbul, has a top speed of 122 miles per hour and a 1.6 litre engine. The Wheelers are excited to see how the trip turns out, saying travel has changed so much since 1972. “This is a great way to celebrate the heritage of Lonely Planet by
recreating how it all began, but with new technologies and ways of travelling for the 21st century,” they say. The trip will be documented using social media, blog entries, map updates, photos, videos and magazine features.

BUDERIM
REBOOTED PREVIEW Shaking off its image as a retirement area, Buderim is now attracting a younger demographic of buyers seeking the leafiness of the hinterland, with close proximity to the Coast’s beaches and major commercial centres.

itting atop Buderim Mountain and tucked just behind the central Sunshine Coast ocean strip, Buderim is one of our region’s most aspirational postcodes, boasting a vibrant community, leafy streets and stunning views of the ocean and hinterland. Buderim residents are justif ed in taking pride in their town. Darren Rix and Dave Hawkins are from RE/MAX Realty Excellence and know the town well. They agree that there are much worse places you could invest in. So why is buying in Buderim such a wise decision? “It’s about the leafy green feel you get and that village atmosphere,” says Hawkins, who adds that you would otherwise have to go up to the range to experience that vibe. “It’s a nice residential area, and a good alternative to living on the coast,” adds Rix. But for those of us living on the Coast, we’d be wrong to think the suburb is God’s waiting room. “It used to be, but the demographic has changed,” Rix tells MPP. “The average age on Buderim is 39; 20 years ago it was probably 59. It’s families with kids living up there now.” And there are plenty more families with kids who would like to join them. Hawkins says, “Buderim has one of the highest volume of real
estate sales around. It is one of the largest postcodes in the country. Because of its size and desirability it is a healthy market, even in down times.” So there are plenty of buyers about. “Vendors who price their properties right are selling quickly,” says Hawkins, adding that there are a variety of buyer types making the trip up the mountain to take a look around. “It’s all ages,” he says, “but they seem to be quite specific. They are out there and they know it is a good time to buy. Interest rates are low and all those other factors. [Buyers know] what they require in the home and they are well educated.” He says the modern buyer’s access to information is making them much more savvy and they are able to narrow down what they want, not settling on the first home they see. The RE/MAX agents say this is a big change from 10 or so years ago, when buyers would be happy with something that was about right. Rix and Hawkins are always looking for more listings as they are seeing a quick turnover in stock. “Quality properties that are priced correctly are easy to sell,” says Hawkins. “Those buyers that have that false sense of confidence that they can wait and take their time, they are missing out,” warns Rix. “If the price is sharp, the houses are going.” M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

What’s up with ‘on top’
Buderim’s heritage • The area of Buderim also includes Kuluin, Mons and Kunda Park in terms of council data. In 2011, the area had a population of about 30,000. • However, the Australian Bureau of Statistics includes Forest Glen, Kunda Park, Mons, Mountain Creek, Sippy Downs, Tanawha and Buderim in its statistics on the Buderim area. • White settlement of the area occurred from the 1870s, when timber-getters and farmers moved in. • It wasn’t until the 1960s that any substantial residential development occurred, and the area grew rapidly in the 1990s. • Compared to the rest of the Coast, the suburbs of Buderim, Kuluin, Mons and Kunda Park have a higher proportion of couples with one or more children and a lower percentage of single-parent families. • Between 2006 and 2011, almost 700 households were added to the area. • Compared to the rest of the Coast, this area has a higher percentage of separate houses – 78.9 per cent of the homes in Buderim and surrounds are separate, while this house type accounts for 72.6 per cent of the Sunshine Coast Council region. SOURCE: SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL
Flick through the pages of this magazine and check out real estate ads and you will f nd Buderim agents spruiking the advantages of buying ‘on top’. So what does it all mean? RE/MAX’s Dave Hawkins says, “Buderim is actually such a big area – it goes out to Sippy Downs and Sunshine Motorway and down to Mountain Creek. But up on top of the plateau [is the village of Buderim.]” Rix says if you want to work out if your Buderim home is ‘on top’, have a dig in the garden to look out for the town’s distinctive red volcanic soil. Why is property on top of Buderim seen as desirable? “Residents have coined that phrase,” says Rix. “Not a lot more development will go on there” and so space is limited. Proximity to the village is always desirable, particularly if the shops are within walking distance.

How to make buyers fight to buy your home!
This free best selling book is helping sellers achieve stunning results. Imagine this...you've just put your property on the market for sale and your agent calls to let you know there are 2, 3 or more buyers wanting to buy your home. There may even be a chance offers could exceed your asking price! Imagine the excitement and satisfaction of selling your property for a price IN EXCESS of what you thought you would achieve. The fact is, it's very doable… but the real estate industry estimates less than one in ten property sellers will ever get to experience such an amazing result. But you can now swing the odds in your favour thanks to a best selling real estate guide for property sellers called 'How To Sell Your Home For More' The book is showing property sellers that they have the power to influence the selling price of their property.
51.indd 1
The book is a goldmine of value adding ideas including: 14 ways to guarantee a better selling price How to attract buyers to compete with each other to buy your property The most important marketing weapon most sellers don't know about The buyer attracting secrets used by professional styling and staging experts How to create the emotional triggers to make your property irresistible to buyers How to 're-invent' the look of your property on a 'shoestring' budget How to use the Internet to boost buyer enquiry and help you sell for more How to create the perfect marketing plan for your property How to find the best and most affordable local specialists to help you sell for more.
The Melbourne Age said “A how-to gem” The Financial Review said “A must read for intending property sellers” Wealth Creator Magazine said “Invaluable in today's real estate market” LIMITED SUPPLY You now have the opportunity to join thousands of happy home sellers and get yourself a copy of this book but our supply is limited.

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 It’s time to indulge in some practical creativity – like renovating, painting, cooking, craftwork and gardening. Or appreciate the endeavours of others via a concert or exhibition.
TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Sunday’s fabulous moon/ Venus aspects put you in a positive frame of mind, as you connect with others. Tap into your intuition, as you take the time to listen to your inner voice.
GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Are you viewing a professional matter through rose-coloured glasses? This weekend’s Virgo moon will help you be more discriminating, so you see things as they really are.
CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 If something’s been worrying you, open up and talk about how you’re really feeling. You’re less likely to be emotional, and more inclined to speak honestly.
LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 The moon’s in Virgo this weekend, which tones down your high spirits and attention-seeking. It helps you focus on practical and pressing matters – like work and finances.
VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Are the structures of your life stifling your personal development? Break free of out-dated thinking and find fresh ways to communicate. You’re never too old to learn something new.
LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 How well do you really know loved ones? There is still plenty to explore as you dig deeper and gain valuable insights into the inner workings of family members – and yourself.
SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Stop worrying about the woes of the world Scorpio. You’re in a sociable mood as you link up with friends and acquaintances. When it comes to money matters, get things in writing.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 You’ll be under scrutiny at work this weekend, as colleagues pay close attention to your performance. If you aren’t working – clear up a domestic misunderstanding.
CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Goats – there is much to be gained from participating in group activities. Creative projects are particularly favoured as you combine talents, work hard and produce something special.
AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 This weekend is wonderful for work and social activities. But be careful when it comes to money matters, as you may not be seeing your current financial situation in a realistic light.
PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Daydreaming fish – don’t fritter the weekend away. Focus on projects that are up-and-running. With passion and application, you can turn abstract dreams into robust reality.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Well, well, well, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls we have a fantastic weekend coming up! Plenty of sunshine coming our way, zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip a dee ay. Oh, and offshore conditions with small swell! So as well as surf ng, f shing, scuba diving and long walks will be the order of the day. Should you go f shing the staff at MWP are very partial to fresh snapper. Enjoy your weekend and remember, once ya dead ya dead!
FISHING REPORT
with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Bream numbers are improving with the cooler weather. Fowl gut and mullet f llet are returning better quality around any islands in the rivers. Whiting are taking yabbies along the northern bank near Twin Waters. Flathead on live baits are plentiful in the mouth of the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers. SURF: Catch chopper tailor at dusk along North Shore with good-sized dart in the early mornings. Whiting and dart are working holes along the beachfront with worms and pippies best. Head to Pincushion for tailor and jew with mullet f llet soaked in tuna oil and pillies best just on dark. OFFSHORE: The Barwon Banks are always worth a visit if conditions allow. The close-in reefs have been producing good-quality snapper, but don’t just anchor on GPS marks – f nd the f sh on your sounder or berley to attract them. FRESHWATER: Golden perch and bass are attacking any lure that is green at Somerset Dam during bright, sunny days. Baroon Pocket Dam is returning heaps of spangled perch for fun and bass on jigged lures and plastics.
