ast weekend I did my bit for sport on the Coast by helping out in the canteen at my son’s soccer club. I walked away with the beginnings of a blister on my chopping hand, and my palms still hold the slight odour of onion, but it felt good to do my little bit for the younger Pearson’s club. However, my contribution is a trif ing thing when compared with what some other parents give each weekend to assist their kids in their chosen sports. Each Saturday when we head off to the soccer grounds – whether it’s on the home turf at Mudjimba, down in Caloundra (can the council do anything about car parking there?) or over to Maroochydore – I am struck by just how many people are involved in sports on the Coast. It was fascinating to me then, reading Sam Walker’s cover story for this week, to learn

] just how important sport is not just to Coast families and communities, but to the region’s economic bottom line. Sam has discovered that sport is a priority for a council keen to grow a healthy local economy, and why wouldn’t it be. Our various sporting events bring millions of dollars to our region. Want to know just how much? Turn the page. On the subject of child’s play, the school holidays are again upon us, which means it’s time for our school holiday fun guide. Coast parents have the kids home for up to three weeks, and if you’re not sure what to do with your little treasures, page 42 is the place to go. You could always take them around some open homes, of course. This week in My Property Preview, Jarna Baudinette has her top picks of this week’s property listings. She’s house hunting on page 54.

A sporting chance PREVIEW The Sunshine Coast is synonymous with sport, but we need to lift our game if we want to attract more large-scale sporting events to our region. WORDS Sam Walker

T

he Sunshine Coast is no stranger to large-scale sporting events – it’s been hosting them for more than 50 years. But there’s more to sport than fun and f tness. With estimates sports events across the Sunshine Coast generate in excess of $100 million for the local economy and the sporting retail sector is worth that again, it is big business for the region. And Sunshine Coast councillor Jason O’Pray is hoping to make it even bigger. He has made it his personal mission to help the Sunshine Coast become Australia’s regional capital of sports events and says the council is in full support. “We’re unashamedly going for every single sporting event we can get for the region,” he says. The Coast is home to three triathlons, the International Rally of Queensland, the Winter Bowls Carnival, the Etchells Australasian Winter Championships and the Sunshine Coast Marathon, and has a robust horse racing industry. We recently lost the PGA Tour, our biggest money-spinner. But this year the Coast has secured Tough Mudder, Ironman 70.3 and the Queensland Special Olympics and in 2016 we will host the International Outrigger Championships and the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships. The latter is expected to inject a tidy $20 million into the economy. It’s a growth area O’Pray believes we should take advantage of. “Event tourism is the singular greatest growth market of

[ 12 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J UN E 21, 2013

12.indd 1

tourism across Australia,” he says. “About 40 per cent of domestic travel now involves an event – a sporting event or a cultural event. This is huge.” Sunshine Coast Destinations director Bill Darby says the trend to travel for events is also increasing internationally. And with the Coast’s geographical advantages and proximity to Brisbane, we are perfectly placed to grow this market. “At the moment I would estimate that we are only 20 per cent of our annual capacity to host sporting events,” Darby says. We are already recognised as a major sporting region. “I would say … we would be in the top three across Australia as a sporting destination and as a sporting region,” O’Pray says. Other regional areas in this market include the Gold Coast, Geelong, Cairns and Wollongong. Our natural environment is one of our greatest assets and selling points. “Things like Tough Mudder, the triathlons, the Surf Lifesaving Championships – these natural events that don’t require a stadium, is where we’re at the fore,” O’Pray says The Noosa Triathlon, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, is the second largest triathlon in the world and probably our best-known sporting attraction. “The Noosa Triathlon is the jewel in the crown,” O’Pray says. “It is somewhat of an icon of, not just triathlon, but sporting events across the country and the world.”

The Sunshine Coast Council estimates the Noosa and Mooloolaba Triathlons generate about $12 million each for the region. But our longest standing event is most likely the Winter Bowls Carnival, which kicks off in July and has been a f xture on the Coast for more than 50 years. It is not as high prof le as the triathlons, but its economic contribution is not to be sniffed at, with the council estimating it generates about $3.5 million annually. Winter Bowls Carnival Committee chairman George Lock says it draws more than 3000 bowlers and family members to the Coast each year. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

6/18/2013 2:16:44 PM

Many are visitors from interstate and overseas and Lock says about 40 per cent of those visitors are from New Zealand. And unlike most other sporting events, many participants stay for an extended period. The average is f ve weeks but he says some stay as long as three months. “Every time we have a visitor come from another region and spend money, we’ve effectively exported our services outside the region and decreased our reliance on our own economy,” Darby says. It was big news when the Sunshine Coast secured the Tough Mudder for eight events over f ve years – and for good reason. With 25,000 participants already registered for the August event, it is shaping up to be massive, although O’Pray says it has yet to prove itself. The council, in partnership with Tough Mudder organisers, is undertaking a comprehensive economic assessment of the gruelling obstacle course, which has taken the world by storm. As an international event with a New York head off ce, the council is expecting substantial international coverage, especially via social media. Media exposure is an added benef t of sporting events, particularly when it includes international publicity. What the International Rally of Queensland doesn’t deliver in spectator numbers, it well and truly makes up for in media coverage. Rally media liaison Chris Nixon says the Sunshine Coast event, which is held in July, is broadcast to more than 118 nations with an estimated global audience in excess of 75 million households. “Our value is in our enormous international television exposure,” Nixon says. While an economic impact statement for

the rally hasn’t been done, the Sunshine Coast Council estimates it brings $5.5 million to the region and that’s without the media exposure. While signature events like Noosa Triathlon and Tough Mudder generate substantial economic activity for the Coast, O’Pray is quick to point out it is often the smaller competitions that have a bigger spin off. He says events like the Queensland Special Olympics, which will be held on the Coast this year, has an economic benef t far greater than some of the big events because of its high continued over >

<from previous page spectator numbers and the time and cost of putting bigger events together. He suggests the Sunshine Coast should be trying to attract more small-scale competitions such as Queensland school championships. The Coast’s movers and shakers are certainly aware of the opportunities that sporting events present to the region. The Draft Major and Regional Events Strategy was put to the council for endorsement this week, with the aim of attracting new events and protecting and enhancing existing events. Next week the Sunshine Coast Sports Federation is hosting a Commonwealth Games business lunch to get an understanding of how local businesses and sporting organisations can participate and benef t from opportunities resulting from the 2018 Gold Coast Games. Yesterday’s Urban Development Institute of Australia breakfast at Maroochydore focused on the Business of Sport and Education – capitalising on our natural advantage. Professor Mike Clements, School of Business head at the University of the Sunshine Coast, was one of the speakers, and says as a region we need to identify what our key sports offerings and opportunities are. “We need to be able to co-ordinate and leverage off those opportunities,” Clements says.

“The real importance of what we’re doing is that everyone comes together in a united vision.” Darby also highlights the need for stakeholders to work together. He says the region needs to carefully consider the best way forward for handling marketing and administration of major events and expects the council and local and regional tourism organisations to work more closely and collaboratively in the future. “The reason for that is we’re not yet where we need to be with our share of funding from Tourism and Events Queensland compared with other tourism regions,” he says. “We’ve got some catching up to do.” He says our greatest challenge is to be competitive when tendering for major sporting events. Sunshine Coast Business Council chair Sandy Zubrinich says another challenge is ensuring easy accessibility to the region. “It is one thing to attract and win these kind of events, it’s another to make them accessible … and the upgrade of the Bruce Highway is absolutely critical,” she says. With leaders from tourism, business, education and local government all touting the benef ts of sporting events, we can expect to see more sport across the region in future years.

NEW HINTERLAND ZIP LINE

T

he Coast hinterland could become the latest hot spot in eco and adventure tourism if a proposed zip line tourism project gets the green light. The Zip Line Canopy Tour eco-tourism concept is proposed for the Obi Obi Valley and was introduced as part of the State Government’s Sunshine Coast Hinterland Nature-Based Tourism Plan in 2009. The f ying fox-style activity involves creating a series of cables connected to selected trees and enabling people to travel along the lines between the trees at heights of up to 100 metres. Small groups will be guided through the canopy. Sunshine Coast councillor Jenny McKay says the Zip Line is an exciting eco-tourism adventure for all ages, enabling people to enjoy the rainforest from above.

Details of the proposed tourism adventure will be presented at a community forum at Montville Village Hall at 6.30pm on Tuesday June 25. Call 5441 8137 or email gwyn.bruce@sunshinecoast.qld .gov.au to RSVP.

Point Cartwright Seafoods officially makes the state’s best fish and chips after taking home a Queensland Seafood Industry Award earlier this month. The award for Queensland’s best f sh and chips is judged by a panel of experts from the seafood industry and is presented to a business which consistently meets customer expectations for high-quality Australian seafood, and contributes to improving the public prof le of seafood in the community. Point Cartwright Seafoods was presented with the award at the Queensland Seafood Awards Dinner on June 7. The team will go on to vie for the title of Australia’s best f sh and chips at the National Seafood Industry Awards in October. Yvette Adams from The Creative Collective was also named a winner last week at the 2013 iAwards, which honour the contributions information and communications technology (ICT) professionals make to our national economy. Adams was named Queensland ICT Woman of the Year.

I

f the mud pits, fire and electric shocks of Tough Mudder are too hardcore for you, MudFest might be a fun alternative. The inaugural event will be a highlight of Fruehlingsfest, Immanuel Lutheran College’s annual spring fair. It’s the f rst of its kind on the Sunshine Coast and organisers expect to see thousands of locals dive into mud pits, clamber over obstacles, crawl through tunnels and slither down mud slides. And it’s all in the name of fun, f tness and education. Immanuel Lutheran College principal David Bliss says MudFest is about teaching children important lessons in ways other than from textbooks. “We have an important role as parents and educators to help build character, contribute to community and aid young adults in developing as a whole person,

not just in academics,” Bliss says. “MudFest tells us that it is all right to let your inhibitions free once in a while, it encourages us to get outdoors and engage in life, and it teaches us the value of friendship, family, fun and camaraderie.” Registrations are now open for

the two-kilometre obstacle course, which is suitable for children, teenagers and fun-loving adults. MudFest will be held at Wises Farm, Wises Road, Maroochydore from 8am on Saturday August 2013. If you’d like to register online, visit mudfest.net.au.

A CRANE CALLED FRASIER Kawana State College Primary School student Sarah-Beth Lamey, seven, has won the Lend Lease Name the Crane competition with her suggestion, Frasier. Lend Lease unveiled Frasier Crane, the f rst of 11 cranes at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital site to

receive a name, earlier this week. Lend Lease project director Mark Buckle says naming the cranes is a way of inviting the community on the construction journey of SCUH. More than 900 entries were submitted from three local schools. Liam Russell, eight, from Pacif c

Lutheran College was runner-up and third place was awarded to fellow student Bailey McDonald. Lamey and Russell received Freedom student accounts from St George Bank Kawana. The next Name the Crane competition will be in September.

ISLAND CHARITY SWIM For the past 12 years, the annual Island Charity Swim has raised more than $1 million for the Coast’s two special schools at Currimundi and Nambour. The 11-kilometre ocean swim is open to teams and individuals and will be held on August 10. For more information and to register visit islandcharityswim.com.au.

7000 EXPECTED AT RACE

T

he 2013 Yalumba Caloundra Cup Carnival is fast approaching, with a huge day of quality racing set for June 29. This year’s total prize pool stands at $982,000 and Sunshine Coast Turf Club CEO Mick Sullivan says he is expecting between 6000 and 7000 punters through the gates. “It’s def nitely one of our biggest events – this year there’s nearly a million dollars in prize money, and

it’s certainly one of our best days of racing,” he says. This year the club is set to host a quality f eld, with a number of interstate horses expected to race and Black Caviar trainer Peter Moody also in attendance. A free barbecue breakfast will mark the carnival’s off cial launch on June 25 and the Silks & Sparkles Ladies Luncheon will be held on June 27. On Friday June 28 punters can enjoy the Calcutta Sportman’s Luncheon, which includes a threecourse meal, premium beverages and

Coastal Assassins to take on Brisbane The fast and furious sport of roller derby is becoming increasingly popular on the Sunshine Coast. Nambour’s Jessica Doak is one of more than a dozen University of the Sunshine Coast students and staff who have thrown themselves into the fast-paced contact sport. The 25-year-old psychology student and administration off cer has spent the past year honing her skills in the sport, played by teams of mostly women, roller skating around a f at track. “I was surprised to realise our league, the Coastal Assassins, now has about 14 students and staff from the university,” Doak says. The team, which holds a training game every Sunday at the USC Sports Stadium, will play its next bout against Brisbane and Toowoomba at the Caloundra Indoor Sports Complex from 4.30pm tomorrow. “We got more than 400 people to the last competition, so it’s def nitely becoming popular on the Coast,”

ournalists, politicians and talkback radio hosts are the three least trustworthy groups in the country, a new survey shows. Equally unsurprisingly, paramedics and f ref ghters hold equal f rst position in the annual Australian Readers Digest Most Trusted Professions survey. Rescue volunteers, nurses, pilots, doctors, pharmacists, veterinarians, air traff c controllers and farmers all round out the top 10 on the list of 50 jobs, indicating that Australians tend to place their faith in carers, protectors and givers.

“Politicians have never fared well in the trust stakes, but it seems Australians have had a gutful of our current crop,” Readers Digest editor-in-chief Sue Carney says. Pollies have come in at number 49, one step ahead of door-to-door salespeople, rock bottom at 50. Insurance salespeople, call centre staff, sex workers, real estate agents, talkback radio hosts, journalists, taxi drivers, CEOs, tow-truck drivers and lawyers rounded out the bottom 10. Neurosurgeon and founder of the Cure for Life Foundation, Charlie Teo, was voted Australia’s most-trusted person, with pioneering burns specialist Fiona Wood and cancer vaccine immunologist Ian Frazer hot on his heels. Troubled actor Matthew Newton was the nation’s least-trusted, keeping company with politicians Peter Slipper, Craig Thomson and Eddie Obeid, and Kyle Sandilands. The prime minister scraped in at 95 while Mr Abbott came in at 75. AAP

Large dinosaur bones found in Queensland A graveyard of large dinosaur bones has been discovered in outback Queensland. The Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum’s palaeontologists uncovered the fossils during a dig near Winton, in central west Queensland. Field palaeontologist David Elliott says he’s not seen this many large dinosaur bones in one area for a decade. “Most digs involve a lot of digging in search of the bone deposit but that wasn’t the case with this one,” Elliott says. “As fast as we tried to dig around one bone, we uncovered another – there were bones everywhere – giant limbs, vertebrae and two metre long ribs stacked across each other and joined together by rocky concretions.” The museum’s research associate Dr Stephen Poropat says the discovery will go a long way towards f lling in the gaps of knowledge of Winton’s ancient giants.

The Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum of Natural History near Winton in central western Queensland “These bones belong to a huge animal that is up there with some of Australia’s largest dinosaurs,” Poropat says. “The really exciting thing about this site is the number of bones we have found of the same animal. “We suspect that it could be Wintonotitan but as very few complete bones of Wintonotitan have been found, we will need to wait until the bones have been prepared before we are sure.” He says it could be a completely new species too. ] World’s oldest ever man dies aged 116

A

The world’s oldest person and the oldest man ever to have lived has died of natural causes aged 116 years. Japan’s Jiroemon Kimura, who was born in 1897, died in hospital early on Wednesday morning, Kyodo News cited the local government as saying. Kimura, from Kyotango in Kyoto Prefecture, was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest living person in December 2012 when a woman from the United States died at 115. On the 28th day of that month he broke another record, when he became the oldest man ever verif ed to have lived when he reached 115 years and 253 days. However, he was well off the all-time record set by French woman Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at 122, making her the longest living person in history. Kimura, who was born the same year as American aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, celebrated his 116th

s pets go, they are low maintenance. No mess, no fuss, nice and quiet, and even a bit furry. So, how about snuggling up with a giant, nonbiting tarantula? A farm in Chile exports the palm-sized critters to Asia, Europe and the United States for sale as exotic household companions. They go for $25 each plus shipping, and need to be fed just once a week, preferably live cockroaches or worms. And they live a long time – up to 25 years in the case of females. “Not everyone can keep a dog or cat,” says Juan Gonzalez, a vet at the farm. “Tarantulas are cheaper and do not need as much attention. What’s more, the world has changed and what with technology and cable television, people are learning about this kind of exotic animal and want one for their home.” The farm is owned by Juan Pablo Orellana, an agronomist who gathers and raises Chilean rose hair

tarantulas (Grammostola rosea). Orellana’s farm exports about 30,000 of them a year. They travel in boxes with holes in them and a certif cate that could be seen as a pedigree. The United States is the farm’s main client while European buyers seek fewer tarantulas but a wider variety of species, Gonzalez adds. But there is one specimen that is not for sale: a coffee-colored tarantula named Ruf na, a particularly big creature that Orellana gave to his now wife when they f rst started dating. AFP

birthday in April, receiving a prerecorded video greeting from Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The centenarian had seven children, 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grand children and 14 greatgreat grandchildren. He worked at a post off ce for about 40 years. After retiring he took up farming, which he continued to do until the age of 90. Encouraged by Kimura and 94 other people in Kyotango’s 60,000-strong population who will this year be 100 years old or more, the city has launched a research project to examine their diets and f nd the secrets of their longevity. NEW BUSINESSES GIVEN PERMITS

unshine Coast Council has given the green light for more than 40 small businesses to operate commercially on community land. From amphibious environmental tours and tandem skydiving to bungy trampolines, stand-up paddle lessons and kite surf ng lessons – there’s a range of activities that small businesses will be undertaking on community land from July 1. The decision comes after a rigorous review and application process that started in August last year. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the permitted use of selected sites of community land for use by commercial entities has provided good outcomes for business, in terms of economic return, and the community that enjoys the services provided on our beaches and parks. “For this permit cycle, council reviewed locations, activities and methodologies to implement an application process which not only addressed concerns and feedback

Reinventing customer service

The new permit process saw council expand the number of locations and activities available for commercial use received during this program of review, but also ensured equity by allowing both current and new businesses wanting to operate on community land the opportunity to apply for a permit,” he says. “The new permit process saw council expand the number of locations and activities available for commercial use. This decision will benef t our economy and both locals and visitors to our beaches and parks by providing access to a wider range of complementary services. “However, more jobs for locals

is one of the best outcomes from the process and I’d like to congratulate the successful applicants and wish them well in their business endeavours over the next three years.” Jamieson says the awarding of the new permits brings an end to the permits currently in place. The council’s decision this month also deferred decisions on awarding permits to new businesses applying to operate on commercial land in divisions 11 and 12, to the new Noosa Council.

SUPER NEWS TO REPORT In summary, the current rules that apply to SMSF off-market transfers and related party transactions will continue post June 30, 2013, which is a sensible result and should be well received by investors and advisers. Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

I

t is always nice to write on a topic that is fresh and exciting. On this occasion the topic carries less ‘fizz and pop’, but is important nonetheless. We recently wrote, “As has been the case in relation to superannuation over the past few years, the noise leading up to any announcement has been deafening”. This again is true in relation to the banning of off-market transfers post July 1, 2013. It just so happens the government recently decided not to proceed with the proposed banning of off-market transfers of listed securities between a self-managed super fund (SMSF) and a related party of the fund. This means that listed securities can continue to be transferred between SMSFs and related parties off-market post June 30, 2013. The government had also previously announced that from July 1 this year, a qualif ed independent valuation would be required in situations where a SMSF was acquiring an unlisted asset from a related party, or selling an unlisted asset to a related party (for example certain types of property). Thankfully, this change will not go ahead either.

Assange still divides

I

t was reported last week that Ecuador’s foreign minister was travelling to the United Kingdom to demand the British government allow Julian Assange to sunbathe. The story perfectly encapsulates the plight of the Australian WikiLeaks founder who on Wednesday had spent a year inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London. People who believe Assange should go to Sweden to face sexual assault allegations f nd the fact he’s cooped up in the embassy a bit of a joke. Supporters, however, are genuinely concerned about the damage to his health caused by the lack of sun; in particular, he risks rickets. And then, of course, there’s the role of the media. Some argue the foreign minister’s comments were mischievously mistranslated and Ricardo Patino (pictured here with Assange earlier this week) was actually arguing for Assange’s fundamental right to “sunlight”. That’s quite different from suggesting he have access to a banana lounge. Assange walked into the embassy on June 19, 2012 and was granted political asylum two months later on August 16. Patino met with Assange at the embassy on Monday morning Australian time ahead of talks with British Foreign Secretary William Hague. The foreign minister assured him Ecuador remained

50% OFF

committed to protecting his human rights “and continued to seek cast-iron assurances to avoid any onward extradition to a third state”. Patino on Monday said he hopes Australian-born Assange doesn’t get old and die inside the embassy, but his government isn’t going to hand him over to the United Kingdom or anyone else. “For us this is a matter of principle and if you have principle you have all the time in the world,” Patino told reporters in London through a translator. The minister was speaking after meeting his British counterpart William Hague in London. He said Ecuador wasn’t going to try to smuggle Assange out the back door of the embassy. “He is going to come out proud through the front door,” Patino said. The UK Foreign Off ce on Monday said there was “no breakthrough” on what to do about the Australian who has been living at the Ecuadorian embassy for the past year, so while parties say they are hoping for a “diplomatic solution”, an end to the impasse isn’t likely. Assange won’t leave the embassy because he faces immediate arrest and extradition to Sweden. The former hacker is worried he’ll then be handed over to the US to face charges over WikiLeaks’ release of classif ed documents. He insists a sealed indictment has already been issued.

ONE YEAR AFTER TAKE REFUGE IN THE ECUADORIAN EMBASSY IN LONDON, JULIAN ASSANGE SHOWS NO SIGNS OF GIVING UP.

Ecuador wants Britain to guarantee Assange won’t be extradited from Sweden to the US, while the UK government says it simply has a legal duty to hand the Australian over to Swedish authorities. Assange argues international law actually requires the British to allow his safe passage to Latin America. The stand-off means the former hacker has been stuck mainly in a small room in the embassy, which is just an apartment inside a Victorian red-brick building in the posh Knightsbridge district. Police patrol outside 24 hours a day at an estimated cost of $130,000 a week. Assange is diligent about maintaining his f tness. In September, he revealed that while he

intelligence leaker Edward Snowden was “a hero”. His comments came after it was reported the British government had warned airlines not to allow the ex-CIA employee to f y to Britain. “[That’s] presumably because it doesn’t want to end up with another Julian Assange,” the WikiLeaks founder said. “[But] his revelations disclose something that is important to nearly everyone in the world – the mass surveillance of everyone who uses the internet and the corruption of the major US IT companies such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook in that process.” Assange has managed to f nd time in his schedule to work on a song with Puerto Rican band Calle 13. It’s about “the new politics that came about as a result of the internet and media distortion”, he says. Assange believes support from celebrities is important to WikiLeaks’ cause. Prominent journalist John Pilger says Australians should admire Assange’s spirit and what WikiLeaks has achieved. “The truth doesn’t automatically change systems based on lies; it makes the liars defensive,” Pilger says. “[But] it does give the public information without which they can never change systems. That’s a venerable truism. It was information in the public domain that ended slavery, but only after a long struggle.” Pilger is one of many Assange backers who lost thousands of pounds when the 41-year-old skipped bail in mid-2012 after losing his extradition battle in the British courts. Former supporter Jemima Khan lost money too and later turned on Assange. In February, the socialite warned the WikiLeaks founder risked falling from a hero to the Australian

version of L Ron Hubbard who expected supporters to follow him “unquestioningly, in blinkered, cultish devotion”. But Assange’s biggest fan, his Brisbane-based mother Christine, remains resolute. In the past week she has embraced Patino’s comments and dedicated herself to a #Sun4Assange campaign on Twitter. She can f re off hundreds of tweets in a day. She also uses the micro-blogging site to take on critics. In January, many thought she went too far, however, when she tweeted that a “gang of rabid irrational frenzied ‘feminists’ will protest Julian’s video speech to Oxford Uni Students”. A month earlier, Assange had announced he was going to run for the Senate in the next federal election. The WikiLeaks Party aims to run Senate candidates in Victoria, NSW and Western Australia. It’s unlikely the party will nominate for lower house seats. Assange is buoyed by recent opinion polls suggesting around 20 per cent of Australians would consider voting for his new party on September 14. But ABC election analyst Antony Green has argued for months Assange is unlikely to be elected. WikiLeaks would need to secure f ve per cent of the primary vote and get both Labor and Green preferences. Even if he were to beat the odds and survive any subsequent constitutional challenge, Assange could still face a f nal hurdle. To take up his seat in mid-2014 he’d need to have left the Ecuadorian embassy in London and made his way to Canberra. But while Ecuador and the UK have agreed to establish a small legal committee with experts from both countries to try to f nd a solution to the impasse, Assange himself has said to Patino that he was strong enough to stay in the Ecuadorian embassy for f ve years if he’s not granted safe passage to South America. A UV lamp is his substitute for the sun. People often assume Queensland-born Assange has plenty of time on his hands, but he maintains he works 17 hours a day running WikiLeaks. In the past week, he’s also been busy with media interviews in the lead-up to Wednesday’s anniversary. Assange told reporters last week that US

ALLERGY LABELS CAUSE CONFUSION

A

llergy warnings on packaged foods are so overused it is difficult for people to make sensible choices, according to Australian research. More than 65 per cent of

packaged food and even more of snack food has some form of allergy caution, such as “made in the same factory as products containing peanuts”, says Professor Katie Allen, author of a report in the latest issue of The Medical Journal of Australia.

“There are so many forms of precautionary labelling statements that consumers have no idea which to take seriously,” she says. As a result, many parents of allergic children ignore some of the cautions completely. The words ‘same factory’ and ‘same premises’ are taken least seriously, and ‘may contain’, ‘may be present’ and ‘same equipment’ are taken most seriously, according to questionnaires answered by the parents of 497 children. However, previous research shows detectable peanut residues are more common in products that have ‘shared facility’ as a precautionary statement compared with those with a ‘may contain’ statement. The food industry, consumers and medical professionals agree that more sensible labelling and more useful risk

Curly versus straight

assessment tools are needed, says Allen, who is the director of Population Health at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne. A standardised system termed VITAL was developed by the food packaging industry in 2007 and updated last year as VITAL 2.0, but there is no way of telling if specif c cautionary labels are based on this process or not, and consumers have not been told about it, she says. “We are not necessarily suggesting legislation, but we need better standardisation of labelling and better standardisation of the risk-assessment methods that industry uses. “We would like to see international standardisation of precautionary food labelling and an effort to inform the community about these measures.” About 80 per cent of parents of children with a history of anaphylaxis do not know if the food is safe, irrespective of the wording of the labels, says the report. AAP

An online study commissioned by L’Oreal Paris has found that 80 per cent of women would love to have naturally curly hair. The study of more than 2000 US adults aged 18 and over by Harris Interactive found that only 16 per cent of women would rather have straight hair. It was also discovered that 74 per cent of women with wavy/curly hair get compliments on their curls. Interestingly, the study revealed that nearly 50 per cent of men and more than 50 per cent of women perceive curlyhaired girls as fun, and that 37 per cent of men see curly-haired women as adventurous and 42 per cent view them as sexy. The rise and rise of Australia’s coffee culture Farewell to the days when having a cup of coffee meant popping on the kettle and reaching for a jar of instant. Now it’s all pods, percolators, espressos, capsules, double-shots, Fair Trade, organic, skinny, full-fat and caramel-infused. Hold the raw sugar. Australia’s love affair with coffee is showing no signs of weakening. Rather it’s growing more intense and multi-faceted each day. The coffee market is estimated to be worth a whopping $1 billion a year, according to a recent IBISWorld report. More than one billion cups of

coffee will be consumed in cafes and restaurants this year, representing a 65 per cent increase over the past 10 years, the same report predicts. And despite Australians struggling to cover household bills and crippling electricity prices, we can still manage to f nd a few gold coins to keep fuelling our coffee habit. “The industry has proved relatively resilient to the deteriorating economic conditions during the past f ve years,” according to IBISWorld. To satisfy our increasing penchant for cafe-house coffee, new outlets are popping up every day. Australia’s largest coffee shop

chain, The Coffee Club Group, aims to open a new store every fortnight for the next f ve years and is targeting 500 stores by 2020. The demand for barista-quality beverages has also caused a boom in the number of mobile coffee vans, according to Cafe2U, an Australianowned mobile coffee cart franchise. “We’re thriving in this current climate because we can bring this barista service directly to the worker,” says Derek Black, the managing director of Cafe2U. The home coffee machine segment has also grown in popularity over the past f ve years. AAP

WINTER 2013

Whale One MOOLOOLABA Whale One Mooloolaba has the perfect school holiday experience, with whale watch cruises departing daily at 8.30am and returning at 12.30pm. These spectacular creatures have to be seen to be believed and can be spotted at ‘Humpback Highway’ along the picturesque Mooloolaba coastline. Whale One’s school holiday promotion offers adults at kids’ prices, for just $79 each. Kids aged under four are free, and Whale One guarantees you will see a whale or your money will be refunded. The entire family can participate in the onboard spotting competition by being the f rst to spot a humpback whale and trying to spot Migaloo the white whale. It has already been a fantastic start to the 2013 whale season with whale breaches, numerous close encounters and tail slaps all viewed from Whale One’s 360-degree walk-around decks. Pods of dolphins, sea turtles, sea birds and other varieties of whales are also often seen during cruises. Whale One is more than just a spectacular vessel, it is an extraordinary ocean adventure. The Whale One crew aims to instil

The octopus will be the latest addition to the attraction and will be positioned in the Weird and Wonderful zone, which is f lled with a variety of unusual and interesting creatures including the world’s most venomous f sh, the Estuarine Stonef sh. As an extra-special school holiday treat, characters from the famed Octonauts will be on hand for a meet and greet from July 5 to 7, from 12 to 3pm daily. Based on imaginative books and now an animated television series, the Octonauts are a dynamic team of quirky and courageous adventure heroes who dive into action wherever there is trouble brewing

From o their h undersea n a ‘Octopod’ base, the three leading characters – Captain Barnacles Bear, Lieutenant Kwazii Cat and Medic Peso Penguin – are always ready to embark on exciting new missions. There is plenty more to see at UnderWater World including the Ocean Walk Through, which features four exciting new themed zones including Shark Shipwreck, Coral Cove, Bay of Rays and Turtle Temple. The Ginger Factory YANDINA Pierre’s Kitchen Capers is coming to The Ginger Factory these school holidays, so it’s time to say bonjour to little ginger connoisseurs! Join Pierre will be creating mischievous mayhem in his crazy Parisian kitchen – complete with songs, laughter, audience participation and questionable recipes, this chef is not someone you’ll be seeing on MasterChef any time soon. Pierre has decided to add Ginger to his menu, but the only problem is he’s not exactly sure what ginger is. So there’s nothing like a visit to the Ginger Factory to set him straight. There will also be pizzas from Italy, noodles from Japan, meatballs from Sweden and sausages from Germany on the menu – an international all-star feast of fun and nonsense for your senses. Pierre’s Kitchen Capers is free and will be at The Ginger Factory from July 1 to 5, starting at 11am.

id-model updates tend to be like automotive Botox. A bit of a nip and tuck here, cover up some wrinkles there, some fancy new headlights, a bit of chrome trim and the same old car is basically back in the showrooms with a new face. They’re different, but often not all that much better. German maker Audi has taken a different approach with its Q5 SUV. A successful model for Audi since its launch, this shapely and ref ned mid-sized SUV recently underwent a

mid-life makeover, not that you’d know by looking at it. Most of the changes have taken place beneath the surface and are anything but cosmetic. Instead, Audi has packed in lots more bang with a minimum of bling – making the new Q5 a markedly better car than before, without changing the appearance all that much. Most signif cant is an all-new, more powerful yet more frugal engine for the base model Q5 – a bonus for those who fancy this handsome soft-roader

but have to watch their pennies. It means the Q5’s $63,000 entrylevel model feels anything but bottom of the range, with a two-litre, fourcylinder turbocharged powerplant that’s the match of anything in its class. You might expect an engine of this modest size – turbocharged or not – to struggle a bit lugging around a vehicle of the size and weight of the Q5. However, this upgraded engine manages the task thanks to a punchy 165 kilowatts, and, more importantly continued page 48>

the low-down, load-lugging torque which, at 350 Newton metres, falls barely short of its turbo-diesel counterpart. The means the Q5 will hit the speed limit in a brisk 7.1 seconds, which might not sound that impressive until compared with some true sport-focused machines such as Fiat’s red-hot 500 Abarth (7.4 seconds) or a Mercedes-Benz SLK200 (seven seconds). This from a car that will seat f ve adults, plus their luggage, in comfort and which could, in theory, get them all the way to Fraser Island without shortening stride. The entry-level Q5 can also be had with a new two-litre turbodiesel option, whose raw numbers aren’t quite as impressive – 130 kilowatts, 380 Newton metres and a nine-second sprint to the speed limit. All pale in comparison to the petrol version, but the diesel’s miserly 6.1 litre per 100 kilometres thirst adds signif cant appeal. Higher up the price scale, the new Q5 is also offered with a choice of three-litre petrol and diesel engines – the petrol version is supercharged, the diesel turbocharged – both offering impressive performance and fuel eff ciency numbers with a price tag starting around the $75,000 mark. By contrast, the entry-level two-litre models will set you back less than $63,000 (plus on-road costs) in their most basic form, which represents good value in this category. The price compares well to the likes of BMW’s X3 and other competitors such as Range Rover’s slinky Evoque and Volvo’s XC60. Standard kit on even base-model Q5s now includes electric front seats with lumbar support, a convenience

key with push-button start, tyre pressure monitors, hill-hold assist, 18-inch alloy wheels and the Audi drive select system, which allows the driver to choose a variety of set-up modes for the vehicle. These include comfort, auto, dynamic and eff ciency modes, while higher-spec models also include an individual mode to allow a combination of these characteristics. Audi says the list of extra goodies tallies $6500 in value, without an increase in price. One glaring omission, though, is the lack of a reversing camera – standard on six-cylinder Q5 models – but an option on the four-cylinder versions. It’s one of the few faults we could f nd with the Q5, which is a thoroughly enjoyable and engaging machine to drive. Handling is sturdy and decisive, the ride is f rm yet bumps are dealt

with eff ciently, and cabin quietness is as you might expect from a premium brand. Audi has become increasingly adept at designing and presenting cockpits of class and quality, and the Q5 meets these high standards. Switchgear is logical and has a tactile feel, the instrument panel is clearly and attractively displayed and contains just about any information the driver could need to know. It also includes a rest recommendation system, which monitors the driver’s concentration levels and urges a stop if they begin to wane. The Q5 also seems to have its dimensions about right – it’s nimble and manoeuvrable enough to be at home in city traff c, yet still offers ample space and comfort for a full-sized family. A feature is the adjustable seatbacks in the rear, which allow taller passengers to achieve optimum seating position.

Luggage capacity is 540 litres, which Audi boasts is suff cient to accommodate four golf bags, with payload of up to 580 kilograms. Rear seats automatically f ip forward with the touch of a latch in the cargo compartment for extra space. Equally impressive is the lengths to which Audi has gone to deliver the latest eff ciency gains with the new Q5. For instance, a new electromechanical steering system has been designed so that, on straight roads, it places no load whatsoever on the engine, saving on fuel. Throw in the stop-start system, now standard on all Q5 models, and Audi says fuel consumption across the range is down as much as 15 per cent. Weight saving extends to the bonnet lid and tailgate, which are both clad in aluminium. Our test machine was f tted with Audi’s latest eight-speed tiptronic transmission, which further contributes to fuel savings (not to mention the creamy way it puts the power to the ground). Diesel versions stick with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Audi says both systems have been tailored for the engines to which they are matched – the eight-speeder is featured in the Q5 for the f rst time. Like most of the improvements on this new model, it’s introduced without fanfare. There are some cosmetic changes on the new model, of course – the Xenon headlights are rimmed with new LED strips, the design has been sharpened slightly with a new grille and amended bumpers, air inlets and fog lights. But it’s still an understated way to showcase the big changes inside.

MY MOTORING INSIDER The latest news from MWP’s man on the ground.

Apple toys with car maker partnership With the pending release of Apple’s new operating system iOS7, Apple has indicated an ‘iOS in the car’ system is on developers’ tables. The in-car system will allow car manufacturers to sync with iDevices for full maps, messages, music and other system integration. The

aim is to turn your car’s display unit into a secondary screen for your iPhone. Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of software says, “Ninety-f ve per cent of cars sold today have integrated music playback and control from an iOS device, but we want to take this integration to another level.” Siri will also be further

enhanced as part of the update, which will allow more handsfree control while behind the wheel. Timing is still unknown but Apple did release a list of the following car companies as partners for iOS in the car system. Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Nissan, Ferrari, General Motors, Kia, Volvo and Jaguar are among them.

A new Maserati for $60K? Australia will get 40 examples of the hot new limited-edition Maserati-enhanced Fiat 500. Named the Abarth 695 Edizione Maserati, it was developed in tandem with its Maserati subsidiary and will cost $60,000 plus on-road costs. Features include luxury beige

leather trim with a ‘695’ logo embossed on the headrest, a folding soft-top roof, 17-inch Neptune alloys, sat nav, a nine-speaker sound system, Xenon headlights and auto climate control. The Edizione Maserati comes only in ‘Pontevecchio Bordeaux’.

Global brand consultancy Interbrand last week released its 2013 Best Global Green Brands report, and what might surprise many consumers is that car manufacturers dominate the list. Toyota, Ford and Honda have come in at f rst, second and third place respectively. Nissan takes out the f fth position while Volkswagen is named number seven. A company’s green performance is measured against factors including logistics, stakeholder engagement, governance, operations and transportation. Toyota, which continues to dominate the hybrid vehicle market, received the number one ranking for the third consecutive year. “From reducing greenhouse gas emissions to using reusable metal containers for shipping and distribution, Toyota is a leading example of what can result when a company makes sustainability an integral part of its overarching business strategy,” says Interbrand.

The new Golf has just arrived. Why drive anything else? Take the new Volkswagen Golf for a test drive and you’ll discover it’s in a class of its own. Redesigned from bonnet to boot, the Golf comes with a new range of powerful and fuel-efficient TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines, eco-friendly BlueMotion Technology, advanced safety systems including 7 airbags and Driver Fatigue Detection plus Bluetooth® Connectivity as standard. It’s even been awarded World Car of the Year 2013.

L

ike the look of these zippy little machines? Designed by local artist Alessandra Massi for Coastline MINI Garage in Currimundi, any of the six could be yours – as these MINI Rays are now for sale. Coastline commissioned the artist to create the designs especially for the vehicles. Coastline’s Karen Moye says, “The idea behind it was to promote the MINI brand and show that if you do want a MINI you can make it stand out from the crowd. Make it look your own.” Massi designed the six looks that were then stickered onto the vehicles, which is, says Moye, a relatively easy process that any other MINI owner, or for that matter owner of any other car, can have done. Coastline dealer principal Tristan Kurz says, “So many people are

the perfect car to act as a canvas is the MINI.” Massi moved to Australia from El Salvador 24 years ago. The Noosa local and mother of three says she is inspired by “the beauty of people,

nature, life and connection”. Kurz adds, “We were very excited to be able to provide this [the opportunity to design the cars’ new looks] to one of the Sunshine Coast’s up-and-coming artists.”

STOP BEFORE YOU SPLURGE would for regular unleaded. He adds that it is important to check that the advertised price is for the model and specif cations you are after, or you could end up paying a lot more to have the extras included. “Do your research and f nd out whether an updated model of the car you’re interested in is about to be launched on the market. If so, the car you buy will end up being worth less,” he says. “Don’t forget to negotiate as you may be able to bring the price down.” Spalding adds, “Importantly, take your time and don’t make a snap decision.”

Before leaping into a new car purchase at the end of financial year sales, it pays to do your research. RACQ’s Steve Spalding says the end-of-f nancial-year car sales offer great deals for those in the market for a new car, but he advises it is important to be clear about your budget and needs before entering into negotiations with a car dealer. “The ongoing running costs of the car should be a key factor in your decision-making process,” Spalding says. “So if you see a well-priced car that f ts your spending amount, work out how much it will cost you to run over the next four to f ve years to see whether it will blow your budget. “You need to factor in the cost of repayments, registration, insurance, fuel and services. “Check whether service fees are capped, and whether the fuel type suits your budget. For example, if the car takes premium unleaded fuel, be prepared to pay around 10 cents per litre more than you

Volkswagen recall Volkswagen has announced a voluntary recall for 25,928 vehicles fitted with a seven-speed DSG gearbox (DQ200). Vehicles affected include Golf, Jetta, Polo, Passat and Caddy and were produced between June 2008 and September 2011. In isolated cases, an electronic malfunction in the control unit inside the gearbox mechatronics may result in a power interruption. Volkswagen says other important vehicle systems, such as steering and braking, along with other relevant systems, will continue to be fully functional. Volkswagen vehicles currently being produced and sold are not affected by this issue. Volkswagen Group Australia will replace the gearbox mechatronic unit on all potentially affected vehicles at no cost. At the same time, the car maker will also update customers’ vehicles with the latest software version. Starting from July, owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted by Volkswagen Group Australia about the voluntary recall to schedule appointments for inspection and replacement of affected parts. Owners can continue to drive their vehicles as usual before the replacement.

Do you research and find out whether an updated model of the car you’re interested in is about to be launched on the market

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 The full moon highlights joint financial agreements, so make sure you understand your responsibilities and commitments. Think twice before you hand out cash to a child or teenager.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 With the sun, moon and Venus all visiting your sign, the focus is firmly on the number one Cancerian priority – family. As birthday great Meryl Streep declared “I am wired for family.”

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 The full moon stimulates your wellbeing zone. With Pluto there also, health issues may not be obvious on the surface – so you need to investigate to discover what’s going on.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 With the full moon in your entertainment zone, stop working so hard and worrying so much – and have some good oldfashioned fun instead. You might just enjoy it!

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 The full moon urges you to take a close look at your work/life ratio, and make some long overdue changes so they are balanced. Travel and international connections are favoured.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Don’t believe everything a child, teenager or friend tells you this weekend. Common sense is needed to separate fact from fiction. Make the most of your communication skills.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 With five planets – including the full moon – stimulating your money zones, your self-control is at an all-time low. So strictly avoid online shopping and spontaneous spending sprees.

Take temporary charge (4,3,4) Helpful hint (7) Be enough for (3,2) Generally accessible (4) Methane (8) Busy and confused (6) Crumple up (6) Wild uncontrollable emotion (8) Rain heavily (4) France’s longest river (5) Persisting for long time (7) Enter into dispute (5,6)

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 The full moon shines the spotlight on power issues within a relationship. You both need to compromise, otherwise the emotional tug-of-war will continue. Co-operation is the key.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 You’ll feel restless and rebellious this weekend, but it’s nothing you can’t handle. Find interesting and stimulating activities to do, plus plan an exciting escape for some time soon.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Friendships will be fired up by the full moon, as you look to add some fresh faces to your Piscean peer group. But a family member or work colleague may not be telling you the full story.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Wow, how good was last weekend? Man, it was smoking waves everywhere! By Sunday afternoon everyone was burnt out! Hope you score your own piece of paradise and if you missed it I have only one word – DAMN! Now looking ahead, there is another bump in swell coming with south winds attached, so the sheltered areas will be best. Monday and Tuesday are looking the best with WSW winds predicted. And f nally how good was the Fiji Pro? Epic! Go to the Volcom website and catch the highlights! OMG folks OMG! Now the Bali Pro starts and it looks like they are going to get some good swell too. Kelly Slater is now leading the world championships at the young age of 41! Never a better testament to keeping your body in shape and being committed to yoga!
