et the feeling everyone else knows more about wine than you do? Would you like to have the confidence to order for the table but don’t know where to start? Here at MWP we feel your pain, and so this week we are on the case to help ease one of the first world’s most pressing problems. We’ve put together a little story on wine appreciation, and guess what? It is not nearly as daunting as you might think. A little wine knowledge can go a long way and it seems it is all about conf dence, knowing what you like and why, and having the courage to try something new. Jarna Baudinette and I – a pair of wine novices ourselves – have been exploring behind the cellar door. Find out what we have discovered over the page.

] Speaking of novices, if you feel you have no idea what is going on in the local property market, I urge you to head over to My Property Preview. Our auctioneering expert on the ground, Gordon Macdonald, is taking a look at the past 12 months in the market, with some sage advice for buyers and sellers alike over on page 36. In fact there is sage advice elsewhere in the magazine. Over in agenda we are bringing you the latest tech news, with some tips on how to be more cyber secure. You can never be too safe when playing around on the net. Turn to page 22 for that one. And this week we have three pages of fashion, starting on page 27. Believe it or not, it is now time to think about your spring wardrobe. Di and Nicky have found plenty of pieces to get you started. Wine and a new wardrobe – what more do you need?

F

or the uninitiated, wine is like art – you like what you like and you don’t tend to analyse it too much. But a lack of wine knowledge can be a difficult thing – many a social faux pas has been made in front of an important client, on a first date or at meet-the-parents dinners. Mispronouncing the names of wines or not knowing that a hearty red doesn’t go well with fish is socially awkward and if you have been there, you know. But guess what? You are not alone, and even those in the business can be flummoxed by this mostcomplicated of beverages. Darren Naylor from Maleny’s Purple Palate and wine-growers Brockenchack is the man in the know. Naylor tells MWP, “I talk to people who own pretty expensive restaurants, and have access to fairly extensive wine lists, and they’ll say to me, ‘I don’t like riesling’, or, ‘I don’t know why I like chardonnay, but I like it’. Or ‘I had a nice verdelho the other day, but I’m not going to race out and buy it’. “These people can get their hands on some amazing wine, and yet they’ll taste a wine and not know why they like it.” So how do you educate your palate? Naylor says the best thing to do is go to wine tastings and try as many different wines as you can, to get a feel for your own tastes. From there it’s simple – just drink what you like. The trouble is, lots of novice wine drinkers have one safe choice, such as the trusty Marlborough sauvignon blanc, and won’t ever try anything new. “We did a wine-tasting event up at Taste of Coolum a few weekends ago, and up there you’ve got 700 people coming through,” Naylor says. “In our Brockenchak stand we had a riesling, a rosé, a shiraz and sparkling shiraz.

[ 6 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J ULY 12, 2013

6.indd 1

The guy next to us had a Marlborough sauv blanc. We went through two bottles of riesling on the day, and he went through two dozen sauv blanc,” Naylor says. However, when orders were tallied up at the end of the day, the riesling had outsold the sauv blanc dramatically. “The thing is, people came and drank [the sauv blanc] because it is what it always is – it’s safe, people know it’s going be a fruit bowl and they’re going to like it,” Naylor says. However, because it tastes similar to every other Marlborough, that particular wine might not stand out enough for someone to buy it, or to form an attachment to the label. Naylor says many customers walk into bottle shops and ask for the “Marlborough sauv blanc”, mistaking the wine-growing region for a specif c label. “You can grab anything off the shelf and as long as the price point is within their range – and it’s a pretty label, for the ladies – they’ll buy it. Because they know they’ll get ripe fruit, plenty of melons,” he says. “The other thing punters won’t do is ask for a wine they can’t pronounce,” Naylor adds. “One beautiful wine that sells horribly is viongier – people won’t ask for it because they don’t know how to pronounce it, and they don’t want to be embarrassed in the bottle shop if they say it wrong.” The f rst step on the road to wine education is to be brave. “The best thing is when people say, ‘We’re going outside our genre and want to try wines we wouldn’t normally buy,” Naylor says. A good way to try new wines is to invite friends over for dinner and ask everyone to bring a different bottle – a chardonnay for example, if that’s not what you would normally drink, or an Italian wine. A friend drinks one of the reds that retails for $22. I can give you another seven wines that are just as good, that are $12 or $13 YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR Or do you? If your idea of a good night out is a cask of moselle at home before hitting the town to order the cheapest bottle on the menu, of course you’re going to balk at the prices for some drops. But we’ve been taught that when it comes to wine, you get what you pay for. So does price make a difference? Darren Naylor says it doesn’t – that a good bottle is not the wine that costs the most, but that tastes the best. “It comes down to your taste,” he says. “You can pay $500 for a bottle of Grange – and I did that recently, I took a bottle to dinner with some good friends for my wife’s birthday. I’ve sat down to drink it and gone, how good’s this?” Naylor’s friends, however, weren’t particularly taken with it, and moved onto other selections from the wine list. “I ended up drinking the rest of the bottle with the sommelier,” he says. “And later, with all the hype surrounding the new Grange and how expensive it is, my friend emailed me and said, ‘Oh, I should have taken more notice of that Grange, I didn’t know how expensive it was.’ As soon as he knew the value his perception changed, because he knew how much it was worth.” Drinkability isn’t determined

by price. “This is the big thing: you’ve got to go out and try new wines. Then you get to a point where you can say, I‘ve found a wine that I’m only paying $20 for, but it drinks like a $50.” Many people think the more expensive a wine is, the better it will be, but paying a fortune doesn’t guarantee quality. Naylor says one example is a wine currently retailing for $120. “It’s nice, it’s elegant, but it’s def nitely not worth $120,” he says. “A friend drinks one of the reds that retails for $22. I can give you another seven wines that are just as good, that are $12 or $13. That wine is riding on the name. “And that’s a bit like Grange. People think it’s Australia’s best shiraz, when really it’s not even a shiraz – it’s a multi-vineyard shiraz cabernet.” Naylor says there’s no point spending $50 on a bottle of wine if you don’t enjoy it, or you could have bought a bottle you liked just as much for less than half the price. “For an everyday wine people want to pay anywhere between $8 and $12, and for a special occasion they’ll splurge from $18 to $22,” he says. “That’s the average a person will pay. And generally you can get that – you will f nd good wine in that price point.”

Darren Naylor

HOW DO YOU SAY…? Here are a few basic terms to add to your vocabulary Hollow – a drop that has very little body

Acidity – occurring naturally in all wine, acidity is the level of sharpness of the wine

Legs – when you swirl the wine the legs are the streaks that stick to the inside of the glass. Basically, the more alcohol in the wine, the more legs it will have. It is not related to quality or sweetness

Aroma – not to be confused with bouquet, aroma is one element of the aromatic quality of wine Balance – the amount of harmony between the acidity, fruitiness, oakiness and tannins in the wine

Nose – another way of saying ‘bouquet’

Body – describes whether the drop is light, medium or heavy on the palate

Oxidised – a wine that has been exposed to air for too long and is no longer fresh

Bouquet – how the wine smells

Oaky – a smoky or woody f avour

Crisp – related to the level of acidity, this is how refreshing the wine is

Silky – how smooth the wine feels in the mouth

Decant – transferring the wine from bottle to a decanter or other bottle to aerate it

Stemmy – used to describe a wine that is harsh or tastes too ‘green’

Dry – the opposite of sweet. A wine can be classif ed as dry, semi-sweet or sweet

Tannic – a wine’s tannins taste astringent and provide it with structure, but can also make it bitter. Tannic wine is a red that leaves the mouth feeling dry

Finish – the wine’s aftertaste, or the impression it leaves in the back of your mouth

Put it away Want to get really serious? You’ll need a cellar. And no that doesn’t involve digging under your house. Darren Naylor says a cupboard in the middle of the home will do. The important thing is that the space is cool and dark. Then you just have to stock it. Here are Naylor’s tips to help kickstart your collection: • Stock it with quality wines – if it’s ordinary now it will still be ordinary in 10 years. • Grab a copy of Langton’s Classif cation of Australian Wine to help select the nation’s best wine. • Like any investment, buy only what you can afford to lose, in case it all goes sour. • Go for wines with a proven reputation. • Set aside wines with the birth year of friends or family who have a milestone birthday in the future.

A GOOD REASON TO POP THE CORK Local law f rm Schultz Toomey O’Brien (STO) has combined a good drop with a good deed. Each year the f rm hosts the nation’s largest independently run wine symposium, with wine makers from around Australia and overseas on hand to share their wares with the hundreds of locals that attend. Also hosted by STO is today’s wine masterclass and lunch, which is supported by ANZ and Riedel glassware. Both events raise much-needed funds for Cystic Fibrosis Queensland (CFQ), a charity that provides therapeutic, practical and f nancial support for

the state’s cystic f brosis sufferers. Cystic f brosis is a genetic condition that affects the lungs and other organs. Treatment usually involves intensive daily physiotherapy, antibiotic therapy, vitamin and enzyme supplements, diet and exercise. It’s an rigorous regime for sufferers, whose life expectancy is just 37. Because CFQ receives very little f nancial support from government, the STO wine events are important fundraisers for the organisation. Quaff ng quality wine while providing valuable support to a worthwhile charity – that has to make you feel good.

he International Rally of Queensland kicks off this weekend with a range of highoctane events across the Sunshine Coast. The weekend of sporting entertainment will get underway at Nambour Showground tonight with the Showdown at the Showground rally show and Super Special Stage. Event director Errol Bailey says the International Rally of Queensland has organised its schedule to take cars for competition on stopovers at several locations as a way to publicise the scenic and tourism attractions of the Sunshine Coast, hinterland and the Mary Valley. “Rally followers will be able to see the cars in at least seven locations, as well as on the roads as they transit between the competition stages,” Bailey says. “By the time spectators go to the same points they will have toured a good part of the region and had an opportunity to experience attractions such as the Ettamogah Pub, picturesque Kenilworth, the Imbil and Pomona

The exterior of the renovated tin shed at Sunshine Coast Airport

GREEN AWARD FOR TIN SHED Converting a 1000 square-metre tin shed into useable multipurpose office space has won Archicology architects their third Glossies Award. The Glossies, an affectionate term for the annual Living Smart Awards, are considered to be the region’s premier accolade for sustainability achievements in building design and construction, edible landscaping, sustainable transport and resource management. Archicology director and

architect Adrian Just says the unusual project to convert the shed into off ce space for Sunshine Coast Airport and Sunshine Coast Destinations staff, as well as an operational command centre and training rooms, had many challenges. Building regulations have stringent energy-management requirements for off ces and Just says the original shed, located at Sunshine Coast Airport, did not meet these.

One of the biggest challenges was how to treat the western wall and maximise natural light while minimising heat exposure from the sun. Various insulation and building envelope materials were required in 11 different wall types, water is captured and re-used, energy-eff cient lighting has been installed and outdoor areas have been created. Just, who is also president of Cleantech Industries Association, which promotes the development of environmentally friendly technologies to help business and the environment, was happy to win the award. “I’m really pleased to win the award, particularly on this project, because it was so unusual,” he says. “It’s nice to work on something that is used by a lot of people and they can have a bit of pride in and we know will function correctly.” Archicology won the Sustainable Building and Design Award for buildings over $500,000 at the eighth annual Glossies on June 29.

Peace of mind with 3 years/45,000km free scheduled servicing.

Helicopters join forces Two of Queensland’s largest and longest-serving helicopter rescue services have merged operations. Sunshine Coast Helicopter Rescue Service and CareFlight Queensland have formed a single rescue organisation with bases and aircraft serving an area stretching from the Gold Coast and Tweed to Agnes Waters in the north and west to the Darling Downs. Health minister Lawrence Springborg says the community helicopter rescue services will continue to be known as RACQ CareFlight and AGL Action Rescue, with a new parent company likely to be named CareFlight Group Queensland. “Each is contracted by the government to look after specif c regions of Queensland and this will not change,” Springborg says.

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.

What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis. Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition. Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs. Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected. When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. USC students Charlie Copeland and Tessa Wallace

SPORTY PAIR SHARES $6000 Two Coast locals aiming to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro have shared in the University of the Sunshine Coast’s inaugural Sports Scholarship. Caloundra swimmer Tessa Wallace and Buderim kayaker Charlie Copeland, both 19, have shared in the $6000 scholarship, which aims to help athletes achieve their sporting dreams while gaining career qualif cations at the university. Both students says they are honoured and grateful to share the scholarship. Copeland, who is studying

mechanical engineering, combines full-time study with paddling, other training, part-time work and travelling for competitions. “After some frustrating visa delays, I’ll be happy to get to Russia in time to compete in my f rst race on July 13,” he says. USC had 20 applicants for the Sports Scholarship. Criteria included demonstrated high level sporting achievement, potential to continue in that sport at a high level and academic merit. Applications for the 2014 USC Sports Scholarship will open next month.

Move to scrap show holidays causes controversy The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce is proposing replacing the Coast’s regional show holidays with one public holiday, preferably coinciding with Brisbane’s EKKA Show day or Melbourne Cup Day. Chamber president Michael Shadforth says having three different show holidays based on the former three local authorities is unworkable for most businesses and confusing for the community. Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show Society manager Tony Nobbs is disappointed by the proposal. He says the shows are very

community-based and rely on their individual communities for support. “Why would the business community opt to send their economic benef ts to Brisbane rather than keep them on the Coast here? “The loss of the holiday will have economic and social impacts for the show itself.” Shadforth says the chamber recognises the importance of local public holidays to certain communities. “However, we think it is an opportunity for big and bold thinking, so we’ve laid out other options to be considered,” he adds.

RICE WASTE PUT TO USE IN LITHIUM BATTERIES

I

t plays a massive role in feeding the world, and now rice can play a part in nextgeneration vehicles, according to new research from Korea. For decades, researchers have tried to devise a use for vast amounts of waste from rice production, the husks, which comprise about 20 per cent of harvested rice kernels. That’s more than 80 million metric tons a year, given worldwide annual rice yield amounts to about 422 million metric tons. Until now, practical uses of rice husks have been limited to a narrow range of low-value agricultural items such as fertiliser additives and bed soil because of their tough and abrasive properties. But there’s a big opportunity for further research targeting more valuable applications, researchers at Korean institutions including

Chungnam National University believe, after they found silica in the husks can be converted to silicon and turned into anodes for high-capacity lithium batteries. Silicon is in ever-increasing demand because the batteries are at the heart of electric and hybrid vehicles. The silica on rice husks is unique as it is formed in layers that protect the inside of the kernel from bugs and bacteria, but are porous at the nano-scale level to allow air and water ventilation. The researchers used several steps, including acid and heat treatments, to extract the silica, f nding the extracted silicon had excellent electrochemical performance when used for anodes. The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. AAP

Not as Happy as you used to be? Is Stress, Anxiety, Depression or Insomnia overwhelming you? Are Anti-Depressants not working for you? Find out why! Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow? One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them. The cause has been found in the gut and seems to be widespread throughout the community. It is a malicious infection mainly picked up from travelling overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is often only detected in specialised testing. This infection has been shown to release a neuronal toxin, affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It has not often been associated with mental health conditions even

though studies are available showing its impact on the brain. It can be passed on from person to person very easily, and so more than one person in a household may be suffering from similar symptoms and both may be affected. Often, sufferers are able to correlate the f rst sign of symptoms, coinciding with a trip overseas where they experienced a tummy bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. Australia is so close to the Indonesian countries it can be transmitted from, and Australians travel there often for their holidays, so imagine the amount of people coming back who could be infected and how it can be passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work. Fortunately it is quite easy to address, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. I have seen patients who have suffered depression for four decades, and after treatment for one month have improved out of sight. Other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment. Bacterial infections are just one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating depression, anxiety or ADHD. We have successfully treated hundreds of patients within months of beginning treatment. These are not conditions with unknown cause like many believe, and can be resolved quickly.

BLOGGERS HELP MAKE CROCHET COOL

N

EW YORK – There’s more to crocheting these days than granny squares and chunky Afghan blankets. It’s leaner and trendier than it was in the 1960s and ’70s, when the craft was known for its bulky, acrylic yarns. Crochet’s enduring popularity is due partly to the wide array of high-quality, luxurious yarns now available. Crochet can be found on high-fashion runways and in upscale interior decorating. But it can also just be fun: mischievous ‘yarn bombers’ decorate urban landscapes – street signs, trees, even bicycles and cars – in crochet. And it has never been easier to learn how to wield a crochet hook, thanks to an assortment of books, magazines and online tutorials. “To me it’s like painting with stitches,” says Teresa Richardson, 50, from Georgia in the US, who shares free patterns and video tutorials at her blog Crochet Geek. Her YouTube video tutorials average 75,000 daily views. Some viewers request particular patterns, which challenges Richardson and keeps her working 12-hour days. Carol Alexander has been crocheting since the early 1980s. A crochet-pattern designer for more than 20 years, she’s the executive crochet editor for Crochet! and Crochet World magazines. Alexander champions what crochet has become – classier, creative and commonplace. “Crochet has always been the

Boost your

immunity with our huge range of herbal and nutritional supplements.

‘redheaded stepsister’ [to knitting] but not anymore,” says Alexander. New yarns have helped. Appealing blends that include bamboo, silk or alpaca, for example, allow for thinner, softer yarn. As a result, crocheted pieces can drape more attractively, which is why clothing designers are using more crochet in their work, says Alexander. The Craft & Hobby Association estimates that 14.7 million Americans crochet, 89 per cent of them women. Richardson’s basic stitch tutorials include instructions for left-handed crocheters. She recommends new crocheters practice the basic stitches – a chain, single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet – before moving on to more diff cult projects. And crochet isn’t limited to yarn. Jewellery makers crochet with thin wire (often incorporating beads). Another current use of crochet, The Crochet Coral Reef Project, started in 2005, travels to art and science museums worldwide to bring attention to the plight of delicate living reefs, including Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef. S

ince the end of March the stockmarket has been quite volatile, and in the few days since the end of June we have seen daily moves of around 100 points. This raises the question of where the market is headed. Are we in a bull or a bear market? Some indicators that may point to a coming slump are discussed below. Firstly, a sharp slowdown in global growth may mean more falls are on

HOT TIP: BUY – Select Harvest (SHV). This almond producer grows, processes, package, sells and distributes almonds from its almond orchards. The Californian almond crop represents about 86 per cent of world production. Drought in California, problems with mites and bees, as well as wind all appear to be taking their toll on the Californian crop. There is solid upside to earnings if the almond price remains strong and Australian cropping conditions remain favourable. Source: Ord Minnett Buderim MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

the cards. While US data has been conf icting, on balance it appears America is slowly recovering, and as the world’s largest economy it should continue to drive growth. A collapse in mining investment is a worry. However, this is well anticipated, and while certain sectors of the market have been sold down heavily (for example, mining services and construction), it is unlikely to lead to a broader market collapse. A slowdown in consumer spending could also lead to lower growth and thus a lower sharemarket. Spending has already fallen signif cantly, however it is still possible for a further substantial slowdown, and this remains a signif cant risk. One of the big concerns is a rise in unemployment. In past downturns, unemployment has risen by two per cent to four per cent. With the resources boom coming off the boil and a slower economy generally, this too remains a risk. Housing investment is one of the key drivers of the economy, and statistics show a clear pick up here. Indicators on non-mining investment are mixed. Thus, slowing consumer spending and non-mining investment are the biggest worries in the near term. On the bullish side, the market has just corrected downwards around 12 per cent, governments worldwide are well aware of the problems facing them and are taking action, regulations have been tightened and there is still a sea of cash on the sidelines. For the market to exceed previous highs, we now need positive corporate prof t announcements to drive the market further upward. On balance, the risks have signif cantly diminished and we are hopeful of positive performances over the next 12 months. However, we are also keeping a close watch on global growth for any indicators of a broader downturn. Mark Davidson is an authorised representative (no 427049) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. Latest tech news WHAT’S BUGGING YOU? Alper Bozkurt, an electrical and computer engineering professor at North Carolina State University in the US, loves cockroaches. Big, hissing cockroaches. His research team has developed technology to automatically control the insects as they move around an environment. The work represents an important step toward developing remotecontrolled animals that can investigate small and dangerous spaces, such as the rubble of a collapsed building. Bozkurt’s cockroaches are not the kitchen invaders some of us know all too well. His hissing cockroaches from Madagascar have to be big enough, f ve to eight centimetres, to wear miniature

backpacks. Tiny wires are inserted into the antenna of the insects and, with electrical stimulation coming from the cockroach backpack, Bozkurt can guide the insect along a desired path. Using the popular Kinect controller for the Xbox video game system, Bozkurt can even set the wired animals – he calls them ‘biobots’ – on autopilot. The Kinect camera known for tracking the dance moves and soccer kicks of video gamers effectively monitors the movement of the cockroach. Bozkurt’s approach to harnessing animal power is just the next step in humankind’s domestication of animals, he says. And with the physical limitations and battery requirements of engineered robots, especially at small sizes, the appeal of controlling an animal’s body as a robot has been gaining traction. He recently attended a conference in Japan to share his f ndings and connect with other biobot builders. The f eld is growing with teams also working to remotely control large moths and beetles.

A US company called Backyard Brains has developed cockroach control technology similar to Bozkurt’s that allows students to direct their own bugs using an iPhone. Their RoboRoach serves as an educational tool to expose students of all ages to neuroscience, says Greg Gage, a co-founder of Backyard Brains. “I think people get kind of creeped out by remote control of insects for fun,” Gage says. But the work of both Gage and Bozkurt is not just for fun. Backyard Brains is serious about education. And Bozkurt’s research is ultimately focused on developing technology that can be used to help humans. His National Science Foundation funding is aimed at developing a system to search for survivors under the rubble of a collapsed building. Resilient cockroaches also could be used for environmental sensing, such as detecting radiation levels in Japan’s Fukushima nuclear disaster.

ARE YOU PROTECTED? When it comes to online identity theft, it’s a minefield out there. Every day, some cyber crook is devising new ways to sneak into our online accounts and pilfer money, or just our sanity. And computer hackers are getting better at it, becoming increasingly sophisticated in their methods and targets. No one is entirely safe, say online security experts. But there are ways to toughen up our defences against online identity theft. Here’s some advice: Beef up passwords: Too many of us use the same wimpy passwords, whether it’s for banking, shopping or socialising. If just one account gets hacked, they’re all instantly vulnerable. Passwords should never be a dictionary word, a sequence of numbers/letters (such as 45678 or abcdef) or anything that’s personal. Instead, they should be at least eight characters, a mix of upper- and lowercase letters, a combination of letters and symbols (, &, $, etc.). Skip the quizzes: “What dog are you?” “What Michael Jackson dance move are you?” “Could you survive the Hunger Games?” All those trivia quizzes, polls, surveys and personality tests that populate the online universe may be perfectly benign. Or they could be a cyber crook trying to assemble puzzle pieces of your identity, so don’t take part.

Answer with caution: When signing up for online accounts, we’re often required to answer selected security questions such as your f rst pet, favourite colour or mother’s maiden name. But if someone wants to break into your online accounts, every answer they need could already be out there via social media. Instead, use fake answers that you’ll remember. Don’t click: You get an email from a friend who wants to share a link to a cute video, political commentary or an intriguing story. Problem is, it might not really be your friend, but an impostor. Or your friend may unwittingly be sharing an infected link that could worm its way into your computer. The experts advice? Don’t click links in the body of an email. Be social media savvy: There are ways to reduce your risks while still enjoying online socialising. Among them, never post your email address or your full birth date (especially the year). Lock down your account so it’s viewable to friends only. Don’t accept friend requests from people you don’t know. And while Facebook isn’t the only social media venue, its 800-plus million users make it a giant target for hackers. Keep it in the palm of your hand: Your mobile phone can be a source of cyber intrusions, either by downloading apps infected with viruses or clicking on texts/links that try to con you into disclosing f nancial or personal information. At the very least, everyone should use a password on mobile phones.

DON’T SHOOT! Violent video games do not immediately turn players into anti-social people, a new study has found. Attempting to solidify long-held theories that violent video games can negatively affect the mood and personality of those who play them, the University of Queensland conducted an experiment involving gun-toting games such as Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto. The study involved 64 undergraduate students, 56 per cent of whom were male. After a 20-minute gaming session, a researcher pretended to drop some pens in front of players and noted how many helped pick them up. The experiment showed that regardless of whether the game played was violent or not, only about 40 to 60 per cent of participants helped pick up the pens. The authors suggest the results show there is no correlation between violent game play and unhelpful behaviour. “We fail to substantiate conjecture that playing contemporary violent video games will lead to diminished pro-social behaviour,” the study concludes. Denture troubles? We can help

As a dental prosthestist, if I had a dollar for every time I have heard a patient say, “The upper denture is good but the lower denture moves” I could be retired. If you wear full dentures and you have heard yourself say this then there is an alternative – Implant Retained Overdentures. This is where titanium screws can be inserted into your jaw by a trained dentist and then a denture made to fit over the top. This enables the patient a much greater control of the denture, stopping nearly all the movement of that troublesome denture. This could allow us to make the upper denture without having to cover the palate. It also enables you to chew better than with your conventional denture and eat food you never thought possible. If you wear a partial denture that is held in place by unsightly clasps

– it may also be possible to have a partial denture that is retained by implants. Placement of implants in the appropriate position can make this possible. They can be life changing to someone who struggles with their ordinary dentures. All at a price that is becoming more and more affordable. We work alongside your dentist to provide a cost effective solution. Whether Implants are an option for you will have to be assessed by your dentist, however if you would like to find out more, visit Advance Oral today for your free consultation with our experienced Prosthetist to assess and discuss your denture options. It may be possible to use your existing dentures – modifying them to accommodate the implants. A new full upper denture and a new full lower implant retained over denture could cost as little as - $3000. *Conditions apply

Patrice, Laura and Kuki will return to the Coast to perform Songs for a New World, a musical written by lyricist and composer Jason Brown which explores life’s unexpected moments and the struggle to regroup after everything falls apart. The Tipokis say Songs for a New World is one of their favourite

here are two types of people that I just don’t trust in this world: those who don’t drink and those who collect stamps. Now sure, some folk like to suggest that alcohol is man’s worst enemy. Having said that, the Bible commands that we love our enemy, so I reckon the more beers we drink, the closer we get to heaven. When you think about it, the folk in the Bible weren’t always the clean-living cats we all assume them to be. I mean, these were a people who sat around getting stoned to death. Don’t forget, according to the pages of the Bible, old mate Moses was a party dude who went up the mountain with two tablets and the people danced all night. When it comes to boozing in Biblical times, the only real gaff Jesus ever made was turning water into wine, not beer. Sorry, but the old loaves and the f shes would have gone way better with an ice cold pint of lager than a cheeky chardonnay. In fact, if the big fella had his time again, I reckon he would’ve loaded

the sacred kegs full of TED’s Platinum. Tooheys Extra Dry has had a massive impact on the Aussie beer market over the past f ve years and the TED’s Platinum steps it up a notch when it comes to a cracking full-strength, full-bodied lager. Originally, this little gem was rolling out of the brewery as a 6.5 per cent lager with more kick on it than a Chuck Norris roundhouse special. The boff ns at Tooheys have since paired it back a touch and the Platinum is now brewed using a longer f ltration process than its little green-labelled mate, which means greater fermentation f avours are delivered straight into the beer, creating an ace-tasting, crisp and clean-f nishing brew. I give the Tooheys Extra Dry Platinum a solid four out of f ve thumbs up. If you love the original TED you’ll dig this one, hombre.

magine for a minute that your job is designing boxes. Not very exciting, but it’s a living. You’ve been designing the same boxes pretty much the same way for about four decades, then one day your boss asks you to design a new box. Same basic principles as the others, but this one has to be new and different. Exciting. Evocative. Welcome to the world of the Range Rover design team. Not that I’m saying the world’s most admired four-wheel-drive is no more than a box; it’s way more than

that. But most true four-wheeldrives are, well, boxy. The truth is the Range Rover’s basic design hasn’t changed all that much in the four decades since this British thoroughbred f rst stunned the motoring world. Yet, somehow, even with the same basic shape, the Range Rover continues to set the benchmark. It’s still modern, contemporary and, above all, highly desirable. Range Rover’s designers have been at it again recently, restyling the ‘box’ once more in the form

of the latest Range Rover Vogue, which hit the Australian market in February. At f rst glance it doesn’t look all that different from those wonderful Range Rovers to have gone before. Interestingly, this is just the fourth all-new Range Rover in 40 years. This one shifts the goalposts quite markedly – no small achievement for a car that’s def ned this category since its inception. It remains a deceptively large piece of metal (mostly aluminium these days, to keep its weight

[ down), although its crisp lines and clever proportions disguise its true dimensions. That lightweight construction has carved an impressive 400 kilograms off the vehicle’s gross weight, producing a car that’s just as big, even roomier, yet more nimble and athletic than ever before. It has always been spacious, but feels a little more so this time around. And of course, the Rangie has always been stunningly ref ned for what remains a truly unstoppable off-road device. But it feels even more posh, pampering and classy. The cabin further develops some of the themes emerging within previous Range Rovers. The rotarystyle gear selector emerges from the centre console when you f re up the engine and helps to free up some extra storage space. The electronic park brake does likewise. The Terrain Response System has been ref ned so it analyses driving conditions and adjusts the vehicle settings. System controls sit f ush with the console’s classy wood and alloy trim. The dash layout has been updated, with a virtual instrument panel where only the relevant numbers are illuminated. For instance, if you’re travelling at 90 kilometres per hour, only the numbers from 80 to 100 kilometres per hour are lit up so your speed can be found at a quick glance. Beyond that, the Vogue’s cabin is quite pared back yet feels more high-end and luxurious. Range Rover makes special note of the so-called “Command driving position boasting that the driver sits “typically 90 millimetres higher than other premium SUVs. With an entry-level price beyond $180,000, I guess you’d probably want to be looking down on everybody else. The seats are trimmed in the most supple, hand-stitched leather and heated (as is the steering wheel). Rear-seat passengers are accommodated in equal comfort, and the entire cabin is bathed in the f ltered light provided by a full-length panoramic sunroof. Vogue high-end options include multi-mode massaging seats, adaptive cruise control with ‘queue assist’ that MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

will shadow the vehicle in front at low speeds, blind spot monitoring with ‘closing vehicle sensing’ and reverse traff c detection which keeps an eye out for approaching cars while you’re going backwards. There’s also convenience – like the electric upper and lower tailgates. The top glass hatchback opens independently to allow you to retrieve items without your entire load being disturbed, then the lower gate also opens electronically if you wish. There’s even the option of an electrically retracting towbar. And for those who want to take this glorious vehicle into the bush, it has the ability to wade through water 900 millimetres deep. Mechanically, the new Rangie has made signif cant strides too, with three distinctive engine options.

As well as being impressively crisp and quiet, the diesel provided more than adequate shove for this big machine. The supercharged petrol V8 will do the same journey almost three seconds quicker. But the diesel would do us, particularly since our week in mostly city traff c – most def nitely not the preferred mode for this kind of vehicle – returned the almost unbelievable fuel consumption of just 9.3 litres per 100 kilometres, thanks to the eight-speed auto and also a stop-start fuel-saving system. We’ve driven four-cylinder hatchbacks which have used more fuel in similar conditions. So in all respects it seems the Range Rover engineers have, once again, def ed convention and physics in making this remarkable machine better in just about every way. It truly is one out of the box.

The specially built cars were newly imported from France at the beginning of the year and are said to have cost at least f ve times that of their standard road-going equivalents. Cricks Renault general manager Dean Stuart is thrilled the Renault team were willing to take part in the meet and greet evening. Two of his mechanics were invited to help the team throughout the rally this weekend. “They were stoked to get the opportunity, he says. And two members of the public were able to experience the thrill of the rally f rst-hand, each winning a hot lap with the Renault team – one in the bush on Wednesday morning and one at Nambour Showground tonight.

MY MOTORING INSIDER The latest news from MWP’s man on the ground.

Volkswagen sales hit in June

Off cial car sales f gures released this month suggest Volkswagen sales in Australia have ve been affected by recent negative media coverage that led to a recall. VW registered a drop of nearly 20 per cent compared with this time last year, selling 1226 fewer vehicles than June 2012. Its most famous car, the Golf hatchback, fell 56 per cent year on year. There were positive results from the Polo city car (up 73 per cent) and Amorak four-wheel drive ute (up 129 per cent).

Peugeot-Citroen may hand control to GM

Cars Guide reports struggling French carmaker Peugot-Citroen has been crippled by shrinking sales in its home market of Europe, a problem compounded by its lack of exports. Reports from Reuters say the Peugeot family has offered to give control of PSA to General Motors Company in return for fresh capital needed to maintain operations through to the end of the year. The same sources said PSA’s Chinese partner Dongfeng is also a possibility. Spokespeople for all three companies have denied the claims.

The power of now PREVIEW Gordon Macdonald from Jason Andrew Auctioneers looks back at the f nancial year that was.

T

he first half of 2013 kicked off with exceptional promise for the property market, as 175 basis points worth of interest rate cuts since October 2011 began to filter through to the broader economy. Consumer confidence was on the rise and the media was full of reports spruiking a real estate recovery, with many commentators predicting improved conditions for sellers ahead. Although the southern states have fared somewhat better, South-East Queensland’s promise has remained largely unfulf lled. While the positive media reports have continued sporadically throughout the past six months, the underlying data shows that apart from in isolated pockets, the broader property market has failed to ignite. Buyer activity was slightly elevated, with average inspections growing from 18 to 20 and average registrations at auction rising from

1.5 to 1.6. But the slight rise in buyer interest was not matched in outcomes, with the overall auction clearance rate falling from 55.5 per cent in 2012 to 48.2 per cent in the f rst half of 2013. Perhaps most signif cantly, the number of vendors who describe themselves as highly motivated fell from 67 per cent to 52 per cent, while the percentage vendors were prepared to shift their reserve on auction day to achieve a sale fell from 5.3 per cent to 4.2 per cent. The data suggests that overall, vendors swayed by media reports have been reluctant to moderate their price expectations in anticipation of the touted market recovery, which has so far failed to materialise. The danger in perpetuating the myth of guaranteed better times ahead is for vendors who would otherwise act, becoming paralysed by the tantalising hope of future market improvement. As June drew to a close, the announcement that Kevin Rudd would once again head the Labor Party as Australia’s Prime Minister sent shockwaves through the country. After cancelling Gillard’s original planned election date, he’s still yet to tell us when the new date will be. Meanwhile, the dollar is down almost 20 cents from last year’s highs and the experts say it has much further to fall. The air of uncertainty is strong, but as with every market environment, there are good opportunities in property for those courageous enough to act on them. Spring traditionally brings more sellers to market, as well as a heightened level of buyer activity. More activity means more competition – perhaps for one or the other, or perhaps for both. While predicting the future is impossible, what is certain today is that for buyers, historically low interest rates mean money is cheap and yields are strong, attracting savvy investors back to the market. For sellers, lower winter stock levels mean there’s a solid chance of transacting with active buyers. For those re-buying and in particular upgrading, any perceived loss on a sale will easily be regained on the subsequent purchase. In real estate, making good decisions isn’t about looking into a crystal ball and picking the best time to sell or buy. It’s about evaluating the risk and opportunity of the current conditions and acting accordingly. It’s about harnessing the power of now.

The danger in perpetuating the myth of guaranteed better times ahead is for vendors who would otherwise act, becoming paralysed by the tantalising hope of future market improvement [ 36 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J ULY 12, 2013

BOUTIQUE BRIGHTWATER DEVELOPMENT A WINNER

ore than 30 townhouses have been sold in stage one of Aspect North, a $40 million boutique residential development at Brightwater in Mountain Creek. Brisbane-based developers AR Developments has recently launched stage two and is confident the remaining 30 townhouses will be sold by Christmas this year. Aspect North features 67 townhouses and is only a few kilometres from the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital and future Oceanside Kawana precinct. The large three- and four-bedroom properties feature quality f nishes, including stone benchtops and ducted air-conditioning throughout. Adjacent to parkland, the elevated site has uninterrupted views of the Mooloolaba skyline and ocean. Prices start at $385,000 for three bedrooms and $445,000 for four. Mick McMillan from AR Developments says the developer supports a recent projection by economic forecaster BIS Shrapnel that Brisbane house prices will increase by up to 17 per cent over the next three years. “BIS Shrapnel has got it right and there will be some positive spin off for Sunshine Coast property prices,” McMillan says. “If the price is right and under the $600,000 mark for quality product, the market is there and it is growing.

The go-ahead for the new hospital plus other government infrastructure has given us a real boost ost

“The go-ahead for the new hospital plus other government infrastructure has given us a real boost.” McMillan says AR Developments believes the BIS Shrapnel report will send a strong signal to the Sunshine Coast market. “BIS Shrapnel says the drain in conf dence post the GFC is starting to wane and Australians are realising that the low interest rates offer the best opportunity to get into the market,” he says.

“The Melbourne and Sydney markets have come off the boil and you can’t get the same quality product down there for the prices that we can offer on the Sunshine Coast. “The f nal bit to the puzzle will be to get the federal election out of the way and when that happens, we believe the September and December quarters will be strong.” McMillan says AR Developments is also actively looking at new sites on the Sunshine Coast.

“It’s quite simple, we believe in being open and honest, because it works”

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Don’t get stuck in a rut. It’s time to apply innovative new solutions to stubborn old problems. You’ll get the best results if you combine logic with intuition, and intellect with imagination.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 What a fabulous weekend for work and business as the planets send fortuitous opportunities your way. You’ll have to be a clever and gung-ho Gemini to capitalise on them though.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Make the most of this weekend, as mighty Mars charges into your sign. You’re in the mood to work and others will listen closely to what you have to say.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 You’re ambitious to get ahead but don’t get ahead of yourself. Mars moves into your privacy zone so it’s time to contemplate where you’re going – and where you’ve been.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 An intriguing new person or peer group could enter your life, bringing a breath of fresh air to tired old routines. Be adventurous – go for excitement and you won’t be sorry.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Are you having problems at work? Relax, Libra. Help is at hand – from a most unlikely source. When it comes to a financial transaction, make sure you read the fine print thoroughly.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Appreciate the beauty around you and enjoy life’s little luxuries. Whether it’s a walk on the beach or a relaxing massage do something special this weekend, Scorpio.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Don’t skim the surface Sagittarius. The stars encourage you to examine a current situation in great detail. Then let your ideas simmer for a few days before you take action.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Don’t get bogged down in details goats. The stars favour thinking on your feet and making some exciting snap decisions. Plus put aside time to nurture your overseas contacts.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Your romantic or spiritual side is stimulated and you’re in the mood to create, console or contemplate. Beautiful dreams now will turn into practical projects later.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Playful Pisces – let your imagination run wild this weekend. It’s the perfect time to tap into your creative inner child, as you throw yourself into fun projects that are exciting.

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 With Mars moving into your domestic zone, aim to be more proactive around the home. But, if you stir up family members with controversial comments, they are likely to bite back.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Ummm, seems if you decide to get up early you may be rewarded with an ESE swell with a call of early SW winds turning SE later. What I won’t tell you about are the killer banks up at Peregian Beach at the moment. OMG! Or about the stretch from Kawana Surf Club up to the pocket, because that would be a tad uncool! The next pro event will be in a place where I would never go – Teahupoo, Tahiti in August. If you have time, grab a beer and YouTube some of the epic waves that place produces. I remember years ago reading a graphic account of a local who got it wrong and how they fought in vain to save him. That much power can rip your body apart, which was the case in this incident. Now, back to a small two- to three-foot weekend on the Coast. Enjoy!

FISHING REPORT

with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream are still the go with quality f sh taken this week using mullet f llet and fowl gut at the bars of rivers and upstream of the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers. The dredge will be working in the mouth of the Maroochy – a slight obstacle to boaties. Flathead are on the drift using live bait. There will be winter whiting of good size throughout the Maroochy. SURF: Tailor are along most open beaches from Mudjimba to Kawana with low-tide gutters after dark using pillies. Sea bream and f athead are working along North Shore Maroochy on baby blue pilchards. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, the Gneerings and Caloundra Wide using squid and pillies will produce better-quality snapper and mixed reef f sh. Try the Barwon Banks for pearlies, snapper, amberjack and trag jew. Watch out for the migrating whales. FRESHWATER: Canoeists are f nding bass at Lake Baroon using small deep divers and live shrimps under f oats. The upper reaches of most local creeks still have winter bass on brown shallow-diving lures.
