s I sit typing this column – my legs crossed, my lower back slightly rounded, my eyes looking down at the laptop screen – I wonder what the physios and specialists Jarna Baudinette has interviewed for this week’s cover story would say. I imagine they would be aghast at the pressure I am putting on my musculoskeletal system. But hey, they have seen it all before. When the younger Pearson is at an age when he’s pondering what to do with his life, I might just subtly encourage him to study physiotherapy – the kid will never be short of work. You see, Jarna has discovered that our modern lifestyles are affecting our health, and she’s not talking about lack of exercise and too much fast food. The way many of us work, sitting down in front of a computer, is having a serious impact

] on our physiological wellbeing, and f lling up the diaries of the Coast’s physios. The simple fact is the human bottom isn’t designed to be sat on all day. So what can be done about it? Turn the page to f nd out. It’s a slightly medically themed magazine this week – in our property cover story, over on page 36, we take a trip over to Oceanside, to check out what is happening in our newest suburb. The hospitals are coming along nicely, but it’s not just those big buildings that are coming out of the ground. Find out what else is going on over in My Property Preview. In our my style section we f nd out that this week it is all about monochrome – if you don’t mind a bit of black and white, head to page 24. And in agenda, on page 30, Jarna changes gear and takes a look at what is being done for the region’s too often-overlooked homeless people.

ave you ever wondered thought your desk chair could be making you unwell? For most people, the answer is probably no. We’re used to the idea that our environment can impact our health, and many people worry about pollutants in the air or the chemicals and preservatives in food. But if you spend all day sitting at a desk, one of the biggest risks to your health and wellbeing could be right under your rear without you knowing it. It’s well known that physical inactivity contributes to health problems, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes. The contemporary lifestyle is becoming increasingly sedentary, and many people are spending almost all their time sitting in front of a computer, stuck in traff c, or exhausted on the couch. While lack of movement can lead to a decrease in overall health, it also causes a range of physiological problems. Put simply, the human body is designed to move all day: the earliest humans were nomadic and lived off the earth, using their bodies to f nd food and evade predators. Our environment has evolved well beyond those origins, and in Western countries we’re increasingly able to manage our daily lives without having to leave the house. However, our bodies are still built for a life of activity, rather than a life spent sitting or lying down.

Dr Mark McKean is a research fellow in sport and exercise science at the University of the Sunshine Coast and says a sedentary lifestyle forces us to use our bodies in ways they simply weren’t designed for. “We develop what we call the ‘Western foot’ – we were born with two feet to stand on, but end up sitting on our bottom, which is the Western foot,” McKean says. “It’s become our main source of structural support, and it wasn’t designed to do that.” Sitting down all day weakens important muscle groups in the legs and core, and for many people this eventually leads to poor posture and back and neck pain. “There’s been a huge burst in physiotherapy, because of the rise in musculoskeletal conditions where the body just doesn’t cope with the position it’s put in,” McKean says. Steven Bof nger is principal of Kawana Sportscare, a physiotherapy clinic which specialises in treating these conditions. He says the practice treats clients suffering the effects of a sedentary lifestyle every day. “It def nitely has a large impact,” he says. “[Sore] backs and necks are related to posture problems, and posture problems are related to the sitting postures.

“Computers are supposed to make our life easier; they’re def nitely making physios busier.” The human body is made up of two types of muscles: those that hold us together structurally and those that are designed to make us move. In the second group, Bof nger says, are powerful muscles responsible for moving us at speed, which we traditionally used when hunting or f eeing danger. For the majority of people, these muscles are now rarely used. Instead, we’re spending all day sitting in unnatural positions, often hunched over computers or steering wheels and oblivious to the stress we’re putting on our bodies. Bof nger often recommends that clients experiencing back and neck pain have a friend or colleague take a photo of them at their workstation, so they can see how incorrect their posture actually is. “What they think is the right position is often way off it,” he says. Bof nger’s colleague, Ben McIvor, says incorporating more movement into the daily routine is crucial to alleviating a lot of posturerelated ailments. “Over an eight-hour day, it is actually pretty hard to sit up really straight all the time,” he says. As a result, physios often recommend their clients set an alarm on their phone or computer, to remind them to get up and change position every M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

20 minutes or so – which mimics the constant movement our bodies are naturally designed for. “It comes down to just moving,” McIvor says. “If [a client] is sitting for a period of time, I say just get up and move around a bit. And then go back to sitting if you want to, but as long as you’re not just sedentary.” Cameron Lawrence runs a sustainability consultancy from his Sunshine Coast home. After experiencing ongoing back problems, and at the recommendation of a local chiropractor, he decided to try standing at his desk. “I thought about it for a while and couldn’t work out exactly how to go about doing it, so I ended up just going and getting some Besser blocks from Bunnings, and propped up my desk,” Lawrence says. While standing hasn’t completely alleviated his back pain, he says the discomfort is less frequent and much more manageable. “And also, I think the thing I like about it the most is that I’m always engaged – throughout the day, when you’re sitting down in a chair you tend to get a bit sleepy and tired, but when you’re standing at your desk, you’re standing,” he says. “And if you want to get a f le out of your drawer, you’ve got to move down and get it. You’re always moving; there’s no opportunity for you to slump. I can lean forward, but it’s not a slump as such – the core is more engaged.” Lawrence’s partner, Kailani Poloika, has also started standing at her desk. “At f rst I wasn’t really excited about it, but it def nitely keeps your mind more active and keeps you more alert, and it helps your circulation,” she says. “I also think it helps your digestion. I think you’re more energised, and it’s easier to

stay on task because your mind can’t wander.” Even those with advanced physiological knowledge – Poloika has master’s degrees in exercise physiology and psychology – can f nd it diff cult to maintain correct posture sitting down. “I think since I’ve started [to stand] I’ve had less problems in my upper back as well,” she says. “I probably did use to [slouch] quite often, I think.”

physically literate. We def ne physical literacy as the ability of the child to move their body through a range of environments and conditions adequately and conf dently. “What we now know is that children who are inactive, especially through the formative puberty years, become inactive adults.” Children who can’t move well often report they don’t like the discomfort associated with exercise,

There’s been a huge burst in physiotherapy, because of the rise in musculoskeletal conditions where the body just doesn’t cope It’s easy to blame computerdriven workspaces for our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, but research is now showing children are being affected as well. McKean recently assessed 1000 local schoolchildren from years one to eight to see if they had learned basic movement skills. Australia is a nation of sports lovers, and McKean says if we want to f eld a competitive team in the 2028 Olympics we need to look at the athletic ability of our current crop of 11-year-olds. “And if you look at the average 11-year-old now, they have an increased level of sedentary behaviour, and a large percentage are already inactive and overweight or obese,” McKean says. “There’s now direct evidence that shows our children are becoming less

Dr Mark McKean

such as increased heart rate, heavier breathing or sweating. “So they begin to report barriers to exercise that are the normal things that occur to our bodies when we move,” McKean says. As a result, children don’t learn the basic movements – such as squats, lunges and rotations – that allow them to control their bodies effectively. “We’re made up of a series of forces and levers that put us in an ideal position to achieve best posture,” McKean says. “Children who are never given an opportunity to develop movement competency don’t know how to do that.” McKean hopes his research will identify key movement competencies that are crucial to physical literacy, with the eventual

aim of having these incorporated into the primary school curriculum. Like adults who have adapted to a sedentary lifestyle, he says children simply need to be encouraged to move their bodies more. “Certainly our environments have changed, and the opportunities for kids to be active in a range of environments have changed signif cantly,” he says. “It doesn’t mean you can’t do it, it just means parents need to be more specif c in allocating time to it.” Safety concerns and increasingly urbanised environments mean kids now don’t ride their bikes or climb trees from dawn till dusk, as they did in the past. However, McKean says easy ‘movement puzzles’ – like encouraging kids to work out how many ways they can balance on three different points of their bodies – can teach them to problem solve and challenge themselves physically. “Nearly all homes have a little bit of grassy space somewhere,” he says. “All you have to do is go out to that little grassy spot and do some cartwheels, or try and do a handstand, or see how many times you can touch your toes. “Everyone seems so busy, and often children are plugged into the internet or a media device that occupies their time.” This can also be the case for children who are sporty, as even regular organised sport often can’t counteract the impact of eight to 10 hours spent sitting down. “I work with a lot of athletes, and more and more I spend two to three years developing their athleticism and movement capacity, because their bodies and history of movement is so poor,” McKean says. “And that continued over >

<from previous page can be someone who’s been playing tennis, if that’s their sport, for years. “Things like basic movement skills, f exibility, your typical training modalities – I’ve got to go back and teach them how to lunge, how to squat, and to strengthen their body before I can even start looking at things specif c to their sport. It’s quite scary that that’s where we’re at.” The same goes for adults who do manage to incorporate regular exercise into their weekly schedule. The sheer number of joggers out along the coastline before or after work shows there are plenty of active people, but if they don’t move much for the rest of the day, the experts say their bodies will still suffer. Kawana Sportscare has seen an increase in clients experiencing tendinopathy problems over the past few years, particularly of the Achilles and patella tendons. Bof nger and McIvor say this is often due to shortened muscles caused by daytime inactivity, which put additional stress on the tendons during exercise. “It is exacerbated by the fact that these people are sitting around all day, and then getting out in the morning and running on the beach for half an hour, or after work, and are starting to pull up with tendon problems, because they’re just sitting around the rest of the time,” McIvor says. As a result, correctly designed training programs are

Don’t be a slouch

key, as is a consultation with a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist before embarking on a training program. “Certainly if you’re starting a program, get your biomechanics checked,” Bof nger says. “And let’s have a look at your foot posture, how it relates to your pelvis, and if those shoes are appropriate for you.” As well as alleviating physiological problems, increasing your daily movement can have added benef ts, decreasing your risk of a range of lifestyle illnesses and contributing to greater overall health. And if your boss isn’t keen on the idea of you doing a cartwheel every 20 minutes, or raising your desk to waist height, let them know it can also increase productivity – in the classroom and the workplace. “There’s so much evidence to support the fact that daily movement improves general student performance and behaviour,” McKean says. Lawrence feels he’s more productive working in a standing position, because it gives him greater energy throughout the day. “I feel a lot more awake for most of my day because I stand at my desk,” he says. “Productivity is not necessarily attached to energy, but it can be. I really now can’t see why you’d want to sit in an off ce chair, to be honest. To me there’s no comparison.”

If you are sitting down all day, there are a few key tips for maintaining good posture: • Ensure the top of your computer monitor is at eye height. • Your feet should be f at on the f oor with your knees and elbows at right angles (make sure you’re not leaning forward or slouching to reach the mouse or keyboard). • Sit up on the sit bones of your pelvis with your hips slightly above knee height. • Your ribs should be above your pelvis, and your shoulders should be square.

NEW USC HEALTH CLINICS BOOST SKILLS

T

wo new health clinics were officially opened at the University of the Sunshine Coast last week, boosting midwifery and occupational therapy services across the region. Both clinics were established by USC with funding from Health Workforce Australia, as an Australian Government initiative. The Collaborative Midwifery Clinic is being run in conjunction with Queensland Health and the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, while the Occupational Therapy Child and Youth Clinic has partnered with four local schools. Clinic Director and USC senior lecturer in occupational therapy, Dr

Craig Greber, says the clinic is extending the range of therapy services available to Coast children, while offering practical education for USC students. “Occupational therapy services help people to participate in the activities that occupy their lives and, for children, much of their time is spent either learning or playing,” Greber says. “These partnerships enable our students to gain experience in providing therapy in home and school contexts, as well as through the on-campus clinic.” The university has partnered with Talara Primary College, Caloundra State School, Currimundi Special School and Caloundra

OT students Rowena Donahaye and Jessica White provide some pre-writing instruction to Milla Kindergarten for the clinic. USC vice-chancellor Professor Greg Hill says the university is grateful for the $171,000 received from HWA to refurbish a large area of its Health and Sport Centre to house the new clinics.

Business and industry leaders unite to create youth employment blueprint Sunshine Coast employers, trainers and educators have joined forces to develop a blueprint to future-proof job opportunities for local kids. In a Coast f rst, a consortium of local business and industry leaders have joined forces to forge a plan to help local young people get full-time employment. The Sunshine Coast education, training and employment consortium was launched at Kawana Waters State College last week.

Consortium chair and North Coast Education regional director, Greg Peach, says he is conf dent the plan will provide better pathways for students and other young people to learn, earn and live locally. “This is a ground-breaking opportunity for young people on the Sunshine Coast,” Peach says. “In the past it has always been diff cult for young people to f nd meaningful apprenticeships and traineeships that lead to genuine, full-time employment.”

Peach says the consortium will build a unilateral employment and training framework for young people that will give them real and meaningful pathways to get a better job. “By having our students learn on the Coast, and keep them earning a living on the Coast, we are futureproof ng their futures here,” he says. “At the same time, local employment opportunities are a shot in the arm for the local economy.”

HAVE A GIGGLE FOR CHARITY A fun night is planned for the second Sunshine Coast Giggle Ball to raise money for charity MontroseAccess. GIRLS GET THE RUGBY BUG The first Sunshine Coast Stingrays Schoolgirls Sevens carnival took place at Caloundra Rugby Union grounds on Monday, with more than 20 teams entered. With sevens rugby becoming an Olympic sport from 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, interest in women’s rugby on the Sunshine Coast is gaining momentum. Carnival organiser Erica Fowler says she enjoys providing knowledge and experience and letting girls know rugby isn’t just for boys. “It is a great opportunity for school-aged girls to get a taste of the fast-paced sevens rugby and all it has to offer.” Stingray’s women’s coach Tim Murray says the opportunity to see a new crop of schoolgirls playing rugby is timely. “I’m looking for new talent to be considered for selection in my Queensland Schoolgirls team to play at the National Titles in October.” The carnival also provides girls the perfect opportunity to start

Nambour’s new EBUS

Maggie Outridge, Lenita Conti and Georgie McDermott are all smiles on the f eld their own road to Rio campaign. Stingrays Rugby Committee chairman Tony Riddle praised the efforts of Fowler and fellow organiser Joanna Kerr who helped make the inaugural tournament a reality. “We see girls’ rugby as the most important area to help develop and grow the game,” Riddle says. The season kicks off with a Come and Try Women’s Rugby Day on Saturday August 10 at Stockland Park, Kawana. For more information call Joanna Kerr on 0437 335 321.

A $315,000 endoscopic bronchial ultrasound (EBUS) has been donated to Nambour Hospital following a six-month fundraising campaign by local health foundation Wishlist. The EBUS is helping doctors accurately diagnose stages of lung cancer. Nambour Hospital director of respiratory medicine, Dr Michael Bint, is “over the moon” at the arrival of the new equipment, which means people can get a quicker, more accurate diagnosis of lung cancer without going to Brisbane. “Already we’ve got the EBUS fully booked for the next three weeks and we’re looking at ways we can increase the days in the week that we can use it, so that just gives you an indication of how much it is needed,” he says.

Ecotourism conference

Hundreds of international delegates will head to Noosa for an annual ecotourism conference in November. Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey and National Parks Minister Steve Dickson say the 21st Global Eco Asia-Pacif c Tourism Conference will provide an opportunity for Queensland to showcase its appeal as a world-class ecotourism destination. The conference program will focus on global trends inf uencing tourism and delegates will consider the impact these trends have in context of innovation in ecotourism. Dickson says the conference will put the global spotlight on the best Queensland has to offer, while exploring opportunities to enrich the visitor experience and improve the environmental integrity or protected areas.

One scheme. One focus on individuals. One commitment to lifelong support. From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.

What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis. Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition. Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs. Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected. When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. CLASH OVER SEX WORKER RIGHTS IN MINING TOWNS spotty-faced youth, arrived at 11.45 am, half an hour after Karlaa checked in. The men kept arriving all day and into the night. All were well behaved and well presented, says Hartley, who added that sex workers reduce the rate of sexual violence and address some of the “disharmony” created when miners are away from home. Still, when Karlaa checked out, Hartley told her never to return. Karlaa, whose real name has been suppressed by a court order, sued the motel under the Queensland state AntiDiscrimination Act, demanding $30,000 for stress, anxiety and lost earnings. She lost before a state tribunal in 2011 but won on appeal in 2012. The ruling outraged hotel and motel owners and the government amended the Anti-Discrimination Act to allow them to refuse sex workers. Roger Ferguson, a former deputy mayor and a motel owner also sued by Karlaa, says the Moranbah council would probably reject a brothel. Miners often drive 190 kilometres to the nearest brothel in Mackay. Manager Warwick Bumstead says all but one of the 60 sex workers are FIFO, working four- to 10-day stints before f ying home. He says a typical “mattress actress” at his brothel makes between $5000 and $9000 a week. AP

A

lone woman checking into a motel in the mining town of Moranbah can expect some blunt questioning from the owners: “Are you a working girl?” Turning on a heel and storming away indignantly will be taken as an admission to prostitution. “That sort of reaction is really positive proof as far as I’m concerned,” says Joan Hartley, the 67-year-old owner of the Drover’s Rest Motel and champion of motel operators who want to rid their businesses of sex workers cashing in on a mining boom. Moranbah in Queensland’s coal-rich Bowen Basin is part of the landscape of Australian mining. Where the FIFO miners go, the FIFO prostitutes follow. With miners earning $110,000 to $160,000 a year, many sex workers f nd working the remote mining towns lucrative. Though prostitution is legal nationwide, Queensland and Western Australia have promised or passed laws restricting their activity. Hartley was suspicious of a regular guest, a woman in her early 40s who claimed to be an interior designer – cleaners once counted 10 used condoms inside her motel room bin. In June 2010 the woman, who worked under the name Karlaa, was given a room with a door that could be seen from reception. Hartley says the f rst client, a

TODAY’S ONLINE SPICE ROUTE

A

study shows that internetpowered shopping across national borders has created “modern spice routes” holding wealth for local merchants who tap into the booming trend. Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, Germany, China, Britain and the United States will see a combined total of $US105 billion ($114.13 billion) in “cross-border online shopping” this year and that f gure should nearly triple to $US307 billion in the next f ve years, according to Nielsen research commissioned by internet f nancial transactions service PayPal. “Traditionally, the small merchant was left out,” PayPal president David Marcus says of local shops competing globally for customers. “Here comes the internet, and small merchants can basically make the world their backyard market.” More than 25 per cent of transactions handled by PayPal involve cross-border purchases, with the Silicon Valley-based service tending to matters such as currency differences, buyer satisfaction, and optimising websites for smartphones, according to Marcus.

Of the markets studied for a report, entitled Modern Spice Routes, the US was the most popular cross-border shopping destination, followed by Britain, China and Hong Kong. China, Argentina, Russia, Brazil and Australia were listed among the hot locations for merchants to target exports. Cross-border shoppers will spend $US12.5 billion on clothing, shoes, and accessories this year, while $US7.6 billion will be spent on health and beauty supplies, according to Nielsen. “The scale of cross-border online shopping has never been mapped before and what is clear from this research is not just the current size of this market, but its massive potential for consumers to buy directly from merchants around the world,” Marcus says. “The message is simple: the emergence of these ‘modern spice routes’ is great news for economies and small businesses the world over.” Saving money and f nding items unavailable locally were the most common reasons given for shopping internationally online, according to the study. io Tinto released a strong second quarter production on July 16, which has caused the share price to edge a little higher; we believe, however, there is plenty of upside left. RIO is heavily reliant on its iron ore division; in fact we expect the division will account for 84 per cent of 2013 prof ts. The division delivered improved volumes quarter-on-quarter despite wet weather and a broken conveyor belt. Full-year production guidance for iron ore has been maintained at 265 million tonnes. RIO’s second biggest division is copper, where mined volumes for the quarter were up 10 per cent year-on-year. Importantly, the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine in Mongolia made its f rst shipment of copper to China on July 9. This has been a $6 billion project for RIO and is expected to be one of the top f ve copper mines in the world. Following this and also due to the improved performance from a mine in Utah, RIO increased its 2013 production guidance for copper from 540,000 tonnes to 565,000. RIO replaced its CEO in January, with Sam Walsh taking the reins and focusing on reducing costs and deferring non-essential capital expenditure. In the June half, RIO cut exploration and evaluation costs by $US483 million, meaning the full year target of $US750 million remains well on track. Cost cutting and project deferrals raise the possibility of increased returns to shareholders, potentially a larger dividend or an off-market buyback to release its store of franking credits. RIO was an underperformer during FY13, trailing the ASX 200 benchmark by more than 20 per cent. Some of the underperformance can be attributable to the rerating of ‘yield’ stocks such as the banks and Telstra, but also the prediction by commentators that the iron ore price would retest the 2012 lows of close to $US80 per tonne. This has not eventuated and in fact, the iron ore

price has moved steadily higher and is now around $US130 a tonne. RIO is the lowest-cost producer of iron ore in the world with production costs below $US50 per tonne. Hence, it will continue to make healthy prof ts and cash f ow even at the doomsayers’ projections of $US80 per tonne. Chinese producers, who have production costs of about $US120 per tonne, will get squeezed out if the iron ore price drops away. The shares have moved up from $52.37 on June 30, to closer to $57, but our analysts believe RIO is worth $78 a share. Furthermore, investors get paid a 3.5 per cent fully franked dividend yield while they wait (f ve per cent grossed up). A fair go for working women could save billions A study by Ernst and Young in conjunction with Chief Executive Women (CEW) has found low female workforce participation is costing Australia and New Zealand $1.4 billion in wasted wages. According to EY advisory partner Amy Poynton, increased female workforce participation is the key to boosting Australia’s productivity. “At the heart of the issue is f exible work arrangements,” she says. “Organisations need to introduce or expand their work options to better attract and retain women. When you consider that 43.2 per cent of women in the workforce work part-time compared to 13.5 per cent of men, this translates into a signif cant productivity bonus that few employers are recognising.” CEW president Christine Christian is concerned Australian organisations don’t take advantage of the talent and productivity benef ts available by employing, promoting and retaining women. It’s clear enlightened organisations that adopt initiatives to build a

diverse and f exible workforce will be more successful than those that let women leave just as they are reaching management level. Other issues raised in the report include securing retirement income for women, the return on investment in education and attracting women to the right industries. The report also highlights the waste associated with investment in female education as female graduates fail to transition into the workforce at the same rate as males, and notes that women are underrepresented in Australia’s highest paying growth industries.

Find out why Anxiety, Nervousness, and Panic Attacks happen to you and how to overcome it! Do you wake in the morning feeling anxious for no apparent reason? Do you f nd yourself with panic overwhelming you through the day when nothing is planned? You might feel nervous about going to work or when the phone rings, when there’s nothing to be worried about. This can go on for months or years, and will cause debilitating emotions, reducing your ability to work, and cause relationship problems at home. There are a number of underlying causes that contribute to symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and poor concentration can also occur. Even though it seems psychological, and you may have issues in your life contributing to it, there are two very common physical problems that cause your symptoms to feel more extreme than they should feel. These affect the nervous system, causing your f ght/ f ight response to over-react. A malicious infection has been found to be a contributing factor in up to 90% of tested patients. It’s

picked up from overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is only detected in specialised testing. This infection releases a toxin affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It’s not often been associated with mental health, though studies show its impact on the brain. It’s passed on very easily, so more than one person in a household may suffer from similar symptoms. You will also f nd some people can carry this infection with no symptoms whatsoever, as it seems to act when there are other health or stress related problems. Often we’re able to correlate the f rst sign of symptoms, coinciding with a stomach bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. It’s passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work. It’s quite easy to treat, when done properly, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. Infections are just one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating anxiety and other mental health conditions. These steps have been proven with testing to improve the brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication.

alty snacks of the future could be as tasty as the ones we shouldn’t be eating today, but without the health risks. That’s the aim of a quiet health alth revolution taking place in the food ood industry, which is f nding ways to reduce the salt content of food while keeping the f avour and texture as similar to the original as possible. e. “The f avour changes very little, but the amount of sodium m in the product is signif cantly reduced,” says Dr Geoffrey Annison, director of health nutrition at the Australian Food and Grocery Council. He says the changes are part of the council’s Healthier Australiaa Commitment. “What we hope to demonstrate by the end of 2015 is that we have had substantial reductions in kilojoules, salt and saturated fat in food.” It is no longer only about providing healthier food options, it is also about changing the composition

of mainstream food products, says Annison, who participated in a panel discussion at the annual Institute of Food Science and Technology convention in Brisbane. Another expert on the panel, Heart Foundation National Director Dr Robert Grenfell, is

particularly pleased with the bread industry, which has removed tonnes of salt from the Australian diet. The transition has occurred over the past 12 months and people have not really been aware of it, he says. “The average Australian is

consuming double if not three times the recommended salt intake. This causes high blood pressure as well as stroke and kidney disease. “Unfortunately Australians have a strong taste for salt. This starts in our st cchildhood with exposure to a lot of processed savoury foodstuffs. p “Research shows the salt content o of most products could be reduced b by a quarter without the consumer n noticing.” Substitution will be important w with the remaining salt, says Grenfell. “There are encouraging signs that su substitutes are improving, but I w would still prefer to see an emphasis o on getting rid of our salt tooth. “If children are not brought up o on a high-salt diet, they are going to be less likely to crave it as their age increases. “There has been pleasing but slow progress. Unfortunately there are still questionable foods on the market, for example imported instant noodles and condiments which are very high in salt.” AAP

When a tooth is missing the adjacent teeth can drift into this space making a one tooth solution very difficult. With the introduction of flexible dentures, nobody has to know that you are missing teeth. We can offer this solution for singular or multiple teeth. No surgical procedure is required for the construction of this flexible denture and it can be quite small and discreet. They actually blend in with your natural dentition so that it appears invisible in your mouth. The Flexibility of the partial allows

the denture to adapt to the surrounding teeth in the mouth. This is the underlying thinking behind a flexible, removable partial denture. The flexibility, combined with strength and light weight, provides total comfort and great looks!

HAVING live snails crawling on your face sounds like the thing of nightmares, but in Japan one company is hoping people will be prepared to pay for it. Women who want to slough off dead skin, clear their pores or roll back the years can submit themselves to f ve minutes of molluscs. “Slime from snails helps remove old cells, heal the skin after sunburn and moisturise it,” says Manami Takamura, a spokeswoman for Tokyo-based beauty salon Ci:z. Labo. “In this way, you can have 100 per cent pure snail essence directly on the skin.” Snail slime is believed to have an anti-ageing effect on human skin, and some cosmetics are already sold with essence of escargot. But Ci:z.Labo beauty salon is going one step further in what it says is the f rst live snail treatment in Japan. As part of the salon’s ‘Celebrity Escargot Course’, customers will

get f ve minutes of snail therapy, along with massage and other facial treatments. The snails alone cost Y10,500 ($116). Sayaka Ito says she had found the treatment so relaxing that she had almost fallen asleep. “You can feel the snails moving on your face. At f rst, it is surprising, but it’s actually rather nice,” she says. “My skin really does feel smooth and moist.” AFP

HAVE YOU HAD A SUDDEN LOSS OF HEARING? Today I was testing a client’s hearing who mentioned he lost his hearing suddenly but it all happened a few months ago and the hearing hasn’t recovered. A sudden hearing loss is a rapid loss of hearing that can happen to a person all at once or over a 3 day period. It is far more serious than an ear plugged with wax and immediate treatment is crucial. A build-up of wax, feels like fullness in the ear or a clogged feeling. A sudden hearing loss is more than that; it is often accompanied with dizziness or ringing in the ears (tinnitus). If medical treatment is provided within 48 hours, the hearing can probably be preserved. If clients seek advice after that, permanent hearing loss is more likely.

Costumes!

Totally terrific Tables

There are many possible causes; one of them could be an autoimmune disease, which is an inf ammatory condition of the inner ear. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks cells in the inner ear that are mistaken for a virus or bacteria. While in some cases, a cause for sudden hearing loss can be determined, it appears that the vast majority of people won’t know why it will happen to them. It can come as quite a shock to someone who has never experienced hearing loss before – in fact it can be extremely stressful. The key reason to seek medical advice immediately is to minimise any potential longterm damage and to give the patient the best chance of recovering their hearing.

he Man Cold: it’s real baby and it’s been crippling the male of our great species since the dawn of time. How else do you explain the weird behaviour of the f rst dude Adam, eating an apple? That’s equivalent to a bloke nowadays opting for a cider over a cold lager at a mate’s barbecue. I’m currently battling a Man Cold, it’s all over me like bum crack on a streaker at the State of O. The treatment for the Man Cold is really very simple girls. Do not put us to bed; the only place we can maximise our rest is on the couch. Turn the telly on, fast. Find us some cartoons (more Junior Avengers than Peppa Pig) and hand us the remote. We’ll be far too weak to call out for you, so ensure you check back in every f ve minutes. Even leave us with a little bell. We need endless supplies of Barbecue Shapes, f at lemonade and Butter Menthols. Once we seem a little better, you can step up the visual intake to Star Wars on Blu-ray

or any old-school Bond movie. You can do all of this, or simply get down to your local and pick up a six-pack of the highly regarded, Man Cold-destroying Little Creatures Pale Ale. This is easily one of the grousest beers known to mankind. It’s an off-the-shelf medicine, no script required. I guarantee after the f rst three stubbies, your fella will be well on the road to recovery. This is defs a brew for the hopheads like me with the Western Australian-based Little Creatures master brewers throwing in whole hop f owers that produce the most intense citrus and stone fruit f avours. It’s preservative and additive free, hence very good for the Man Cold, and is one of the most refreshingly tasty and moorish pales I’ve ever quaffed. For medicinal purposes alone, I give the Little Creatures Pale Ale tonic a well-deserved f ve out of f ve thumbs up. Little Creatures Pale Ale 5.2% AV, 330 ml North Shore Tavern

The college has been named one of Queensland’s top academic schools, consistently producing a high percentage of OPs1 to 15 over the past f ve years. A report run in The Courier Mail in July 2012, which ranked the state’s highest OP1 to 15 percentages, put the school as fourth best, equal to Brisbane’s All Hallows’ School and All Saints on the Gold Coast. The top three schools were Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane Girls Grammar School and Brisbane Boys’ College. Flinders’ outstanding academic achievements continued in 2012 with 10 students achieving the ultimate result – an OP1. This is the

f fth time in the past 10 years that the Flinders graduating class has achieved 10 or more OP1s. Flinders has also been named among the top 10 schools in Queensland in terms of both year 12 OP results and NAPLAN results (which tests years three, f ve, seven and nine from 2008 to 2011), as well as the best-performing school on the Sunshine Coast. Our hidden homeless THE SUNSHINE COAST IS ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN IN THE SUN, BUT NOT FOR EVERYONE. WORDS: JARNA BAUDINETTE

T

his Saturday night, a group of local people will sleep out on the streets of Nambour to raise awareness about homelessness on the Coast. The Suncoast Community Sleepout is an initiative of Suncoast Care, an arm of Suncoast Christian Church, which aims to connect with local people in hardship and offer assistance in any way it can. “Our vision at the church is that strong families make a safe city, so we carry that into here,” Suncoast Care’s executive manager, Stuart Charlton, says. “It started off as an op shop and then developed into a food co-op, because there was more need for food.” Each day between 150 and 200 members purchase discounted food at the co-op on Currie Street. Suncoast Care also runs a soup kitchen at Nambour’s Buffalo Lodge Hall on Monday and Wednesday nights, offering the region’s homeless a meal and access to support services in a safe, friendly environment. Charlton says the soup kitchen feeds 25 to 30 people per night. “Some of them are totally homeless, and they’ll be living in a carpark somewhere, or under

a bridge,” he says. Many are suffering from mental illness, “and it’s a place for them to connect, really”. Carley Dickson and her husband Boaz volunteer at the soup kitchen each week. She says the aim of the sleepout is to raise awareness, as many locals don’t know the issue exists. “Coming from my generation, it’s not even thought about,” Dickson says, adding that a lot of young people who regularly attend Suncoast Church don’t know the scale of Suncoast Care’s work. “It doesn’t even cross their mind. When we tell them statistics of how many people are coming to the soup kitchen that are actually on the streets at night, they don’t believe it,” Dickson says. “They think, how can that happen?” Some visitors are sleeping in their cars, or have accommodation but are struggling on minimal incomes and are at high risk of becoming homeless. “What we’re becoming more aware of now is businessmen that are failing, and they are in a very diff cult predicament because they have assets, but they have no cash f ow, so they still can’t put food on the table or pay rent,” Charlton says. “And they’re not accepted by Centrelink

because they’ve got too many assets. “So we would welcome them, and they’d be able to shop here and get emergency [government] relief if they needed it.” “We’ve had a lot lately who are people who do receive Centrelink [payments] but it’s just not paying the bills,” Dickson adds. “They’ve got enough just to pay their rent, maybe afford a car and rego, and they’re coming to us and saying, ‘I need some food, I can’t afford it’.” Suncoast Care also runs a school pantry program, which provides food to a number of local schools for children who come to class without. The community sleepout starts at 7pm tomorrow evening and will end at sunrise. The group will be joined by division 10 councillor Greg Rogerson. “We just want to raise awareness of the situation in Nambour,” Dickson says. “And if we do raise some money, it would be good to purchase some blankets and sleeping bags to hand out.” For more information on the community sleepout, or to make a donation, go to suncoast.org.au. Suncoast Care is at 115 Currie Street, Nambour. Phone 5441 4877.

MAKE/MODEL AUDI A6 3.0 BITURBO

A MASTER OF DISGUISE WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

T

hings are not always as they seem. If a car looks like a sporty V8, goes like a sporty V8 and, most importantly sounds like a sporty V8, surely it can only be one thing, right? Apparently not. The latest version of Audi’s sleek A6 sedan is set to shatter a few expectations. Because, despite ticking all of the boxes above, it’s not a V8 at all.

It’s only a V6. And a diesel V6 at that. The great deception of this car is an engine note that tricks you into thinking it’s something it’s not. Not to mention performance that’s the equal of just about any highoutput V8, matched with fuel efficiency which would put some hybrids to shame. That’s quite a combination. Audi has built a reputation

for shattering expectations, particularly around diesel engines, in recent years. The German brand has won the famous Le Mans 24-hour race using diesel-powered machines to out-muscle, and then out-last, an armada of the world’s best sportscar makers. Until then, the notion of a diesel engine in a performance machine was rather far-fetched. No longer. Audi even refers to this latest power plant as a ‘performance diesel’. That’s probably a bit like continued over>

three-litre, biturbo diesel V6, pumping out numbers that almost defy physics. It boasts 230 kilowatts and a gargantuan 660 Newton metres of torque, dwarf ng the pulling power of most engines. Yet all this grunt results in a combined average thirst of just 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres, or just over f ve litres per 100 kilometres when the car is cruising on the highway. In practical terms, it will rocket the A6 to the speed limit in a tick over f ve seconds – comparable acceleration to a Holden HSV or Ford FPV V8. Audi says it’s the fastest diesel production machine in Australia. But its consumption

stop-start system that kicks in when the car is stationary. Perhaps most surprising of all is the way it sounds. That’s thanks to a deceptive piece of technology called the sound actuator, effectively a loudspeaker that pipes the V8 soundtrack into the car’s exhaust system. What’s more, this rorty sound system is adjustable. When we got into the A6, its engine seemed to rumble and grumble like a V8 Supercar. But a click of the dial on the car’s central management system allowed us to select Comfort mode, quietening this rumble to a vague burble.

set the transmission to comfort mode? Click. It truly does allow you to buy one car, yet have several different cars to drive. And make no mistake – in Dynamic mode this car is remarkably good fun. It’s as responsive and punchy as any V8, perhaps more so because of its massive torque band, yet can be dialled down to a smooth, urbane luxury sedan when the family’s on board. For the technically minded, the new biturbo V6 uses sequential turbo-chargers – one smaller, variable-turbine version, which does

M O T O R I N G

]

most of the work at low-speeds and a larger turbo. Unusually for a diesel, it will happily spin to 5200 revs per minute. In our test machine, all that driveline technology is packed into a car that, in itself, is one of the most improved models in its class. The A6 has always struggled to f nd traction against its German arch-rivals, the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, as well as other contenders such as Lexus’ smart new GS and the beautiful Jaguar XF. But with its Quattro all-wheel-drive system and a vastly improved interior, particularly the clever instrument panel treatment and superb cockpit f nishes, the A6 is fast making ground on its rivals. Add to that the exemplary road manners of its adjustable suspension system and the A6’s $118,000 price tag starts to look like quite a bargain. Helping that value equation is a thirst well below the seven litres per 100-kilometre cutoff limit for Mr Rudd’s luxury car tax. Standard kit is generous, too, including rear-view camera, handsome big alloys, a superb Bose audio system with Bluetooth streaming; keyless entry, electric memory seats, sunroof, Xenon headlights with LED driving lights and a high-end navigation and management system. Audi says diesels already account for more than half of its A6 sales and this new biturbo seems likely to enhance that appeal. Always a good car, the A6 felt just short of being a great one. But I suspect that, particularly with this engine package at a tasty price, it’s going to attract a whole lot more attention. And not just because of the way it sounds.

MY MOTORING INSIDER The latest news from MWP’s man on the ground.

World’s fastest lawn mower Honda has revealed the Mean Mower – a ride-on lawn mower that can keep pace with supercars. Developed in conjunction with Honda’s British touring car outf t Team Dynamics and Top Gear magazine, the Mean Mower is powered by a 1000cc motorcycle engine producing 81 kilowatts and 96 Newton metres of torque. Due to its light weight, the powerplant can help it sprint from 0-100 kilometres per hour in an estimated four seconds – faster than a Porsche 911 (4.8 seconds) and almost as quick as a Ferrari California (3.9 seconds).

VIDEO: DRIVING TIRED CAN BE FATAL Queensland motoring body RACQ has released a video highlighting the dangers of tired drivers, who contribute to about one in five road fatalities. RACQ’s Steve Spalding says most motorists are unaware of the dangers of driving fatigued, with high-risk times being mid-afternoon and between midnight and dawn. “As a society, we’re only just becoming aware of how drastically fatigue affects basic functions, such as reaction time and peripheral vision, Spalding says. “Tests have shown that driving on less than f ve hours sleep triples the risk of having a crash and just being awake for 17 hours is equivalent to driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.05 per cent. “It’s scary to consider that this is a risk many motorists are taking on a daily basis. Spalding says unlike the other ‘fatal f ve’ risks – distraction, speed, alcohol and not wearing a seatbelt – it is almost impossible to police fatigue. “Driving fatigued isn’t just about falling asleep at the wheel, because your reaction time and peripheral vision are affected well before your head starts to nod, he says. The RACQ video features specialists from the Mater Hospital’s Queensland Sleep Disorders

New lease on life THE FLOW-ON BENEFITS OF OCEANSIDE KAWANA ARE ALREADY BEING FELT, AS BUYERS SNAP UP NEW LAND AND THE HEALTH HUB BEGINS TO TAKE SHAPE.

s the finishing touches are made to the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital and the public hospital starts taking shape, more families and buyers are moving into the Kawana area. Developer Stockland is now taking registrations of interest in a new land release at its popular Birtinya at Oceanside community, with blocks bordering natural parkland and offering access to Currimundi Creek. The Hideaway Peninsula release is being fast-tracked to meet demand after six months of strong interest in Birtinya. It will also be home to the most affordable lots ever offered in the community. Prices are expected to start at around $225,000. Shopping, schools and the future Oceanside Kawana town centre are all within easy reach, but Birtinya residents are also just minutes from local beaches and restaurants. Walking paths and bikeways connect to the lakefront and parklands. Stockland regional manager David Laner says the Hideaway Peninsula release will be available in August. “Birtinya at Oceanside is a very exciting location,” he says. “This peaceful residential enclave enjoys great access to the Oceanside Health Hub and town centre. “This is one of the fastestgrowing areas of the Sunshine Coast, with an extraordinary $5 billion being invested to create the world class Oceanside Kawana precinct,” he adds. “Hideaway Peninsula will

Home and land packages are expected to start at around $390,000, and Laner says the latest release will suit a wide range of buyers. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

All about Oceanside Oceanside Kawana includes around 100 hectares of land in the heart of the Sunshine Coast, taking in Birtinya, Bokarina Beach and the future town centre. Not just the hospitals and homes, Oceanside will include a learning and transit precinct and a commercial precinct. At the heart of the new community, though, are the Health Hub and Kawana Health Campus – a health and medical precinct. The vision for the community, says developer Stockland, “is to create a whole new way of living for the Coast, where homes, shopping, entertainment, business, health services, tourism and jobs all co-exist in a single location that also happens to be a postcard sun, sand and surf setting”. New roads, bridges, parks and services will be built in the region, with billions of dollars of economic benef t to the Coast during the development phase, as well as continued economic benef ts after completion. Thousands of construction jobs have and will be created, and once the community is up and running, well over 10,000 ongoing jobs are expected to be created, contributing hundreds of millions of dollars to the local and state economy every year.

Coast health budget increases The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (HHS) has an operating budget of $639.9 million for 2013-2014. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Board chair Professor Paul Thomas says this represents a $5 million increase on the amount announced in the 2012-2013 budget, allowing the service to deliver health services from Caloundra to Gympie and into the hinterland. For 2013-2014, capital funding of $115.6 million of the total project budget of $1.8 billion has been allocated for the continued development of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH). Thomas says this is the f rst year in which a

budget allocation for SCUH has occurred while the community can actually see work occurring on the site. ‘‘The past year has seen us face many tough f nancial challenges, however we can now think about the future and the many positive changes to come,” he says. “The Health Service budget included funding that will allow the planned access to beds within the new private hospital on the SCUH site to commence from December 2013. “This will increase the Health Service’s capacity including specialty areas such as general and orthopaedic surgery, general medicine, ear nose and throat and gastroenterology services.”

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 You’ve been working – and playing – hard but slow down and take a break. Having a relaxing massage or indulgent beauty treatment could be just what the doctor ordered.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Saturday favours entertaining but expect some intense discussions on Sunday, especially involving money, politics or religion. Try to keep your opinions to yourself.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Using guilt or emotional bribes to get what you want is never a good idea – especially this weekend. If you do, expect others to reciprocate in kind.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Stern Saturn pours cold water on fiery energy and enthusiasm this weekend but don’t worry, lions. Use the time to recuperate, so you’re firing on all cylinders come Monday.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Are people aware of all the work you’re doing behind the scenes? Your efforts will be noticed further down the track, so don’t be disappointed if others don’t show their appreciation now.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Relationships are acting as a mirror. If you feel tense and misunderstood, then that’s what you’ll get back from loved ones. Search within to find the answers you are looking for.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 You may find yourself consumed by compulsive desires, as your possessive side takes over. If you hold onto loved ones too tightly, they’ll try to escape from your stubborn Scorpio grip.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Enjoy being a self-sufficient Sagittarian. It will take a lot of time and energy to generate the interest of others, so it’s smarter – and quicker – to just get on with things and do them yourself.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Tricky sun/Saturn aspects make for a challenging weekend, when others may question your authority or motives. If you put your head down and keep working, it will all soon blow over.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Your career’s not running according to plan, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Be more flexible, Aquarius – and keep inspiring others with your innovative approach to life.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Take the rough with the smooth in relationships this weekend, but don’t let people walk all over you. Instead, stand your ground – and show them that fish do occasionally bite back.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

50/50 is the call for the weekend! There will be some waves but one report states ESE winds while the other says SW. So get up early and be surprised or disappointed. Remember, the morning that you don’t check it will be the day it pumps and everyone will tell you what you missed! Now, if you have any friends in Indo they are about to score a nice pulse of swell (six to eight foot offshore – damn). Not sure if that will depress you but you could always call the lads at World Surfaris and get hooked up! A friend just returned from Rote Island where he scored four- to six-foot offshore for 10 days. Now back to reality – onshore or offshore? Check it out.

FISHING REPORT

with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Silver bream are working over the Maroochy Bar and moving up the rivers and into the creeks. Small deep-diving lures, slow-sink f ies and a variety of baits are returning quality f sh from almost any snag, gutter or drop-off. Quality f athead and whiting can be found throughout the rivers – a surprise package this week. SURF: Bream will be moving along beach gutters from Mudjimba to Kawana with mullet f llet and fowl gut best. Pincushion has tailor taking lures at dawn and pillies at dusk. OFFSHORE: Close-in reefs are returning sweetlip, parrot and snapper on squid and f esh baits. The Barwon Banks, when conditions allow, are returning pearl perch and snapper on pilchards and plastics. FRESHWATER: Check authorities for areas closed for bass, but in the correct locations bass are plentiful. Lake Baroon is producing spangled perch with locals having a ball using shrimp and spinner baits. During these winter months, jigged lures are about the only thing working for golden perch at most impoundments.
