ave you ever stood in front of the shelves at the supermarket, bookstore or bottle shop, scratching your head over which soap to buy, which novel to purchase, which wine to select, only to walk away empty handed? What about in a restaurant where you ponder the menu for 10 minutes, pick something you didn’t really want, then experience food envy when your companion’s meal comes out looking so much tastier than your own? I have. The younger Pearson is a shocker at making decisions. If I take him to the local shop and cave to the pestering for a treat, I will tell him he has a choice between plain chips, and plain chips. He then stands in front of the brightly coloured packets fretting over which one to go for. Even when he knows the cheese and bacon balls are not an option he strokes the

packet and looks back at me with dewy eyes. I blame that Twisties craving I had while pregnant. Anyway, indecision hits us all at some time, and when there are so many options to choose from, who can blame us. But some people are so paralysed by indecision it has led psychologists to declare that in the West we simply have too much choice. And it’s making us all stressed. It’s the topic I am fascinated by, so I’ve written about it for this week’s cover story. Can’t decide whether or not to read it? Go on. There, I have just made the decision for you. Speaking of spoilt for choice, we have three gorgeous pages of fashion this week, starting over on page 27, plus some treats for the house in our home style section. That’s on page 22. And in My Property Preview, auctioneer Gordon Macdonald has advice for placing the winning bid on auction day.

Spoilt for choice FEELING STRESSED, TIRED AND OVERWHELMED? YOU COULD BE A VICTIM OF CHOICE OVERLOAD, A PROBLEM UNIQUE TO MODERN SOCIETY. WORDS: JEMMA PEARSON

T

wenty years ago on the Sunshine Coast you were lucky to find a cafe that had a ‘proper’ coffee machine – most eateries made do with a large tin of Nescafé. Now you can’t walk down to your local group of shops without passing a barista whipping up long blacks and lattes, cappuccinos and piccolos and iced, spiced, skinny, extra shot pick-me-ups. But it’s not just coffee. At no time in human history have we been more spoilt for choice in what we wear, how we earn a living, what we drive and what we do in our leisure time. Free choice is what a healthy, market-driven democracy is based on. Human beings thrive with choice, but there is a backlash from many who believe too much of a good thing can not only be overwhelming, it may actually cause us harm. US psychologist Barry Schwartz claims just that in his 2004 book, The Paradox of Choice: Why Less is More. Schwartz points to the “epidemic of unhappiness spreading through modern society” and has become the poster child for a movement that blames choice for many of our ills. It’s a very First World problem. But Schwartz and co are merely echoing what many of the planet’s great philosophers and spiritual leaders have been preaching for thousands of years. Though Gandhi and Buddha didn’t face the dilemma of what phone plan to choose or which blog to follow, they and other evolved souls pointed to simplicity, not stuff, as being the source of true happiness. Schwartz is calling for us to limit our choices, in all aspects of our lives, and argues that too many choices can lead us to make the wrong decisions or paralyse us so we can’t make any decisions at all. He claims that it can even lead to depression. Dr Rachael Sharman is a lecturer in psychology at the University of the Sunshine

Coast. While she concedes that “people’s resources can be overwhelmed” by choice, she doesn’t wholeheartedly agree with Schwartz. “I think [Schwartz’s view] is slightly catastrophic,” she tells MWP. Sharman talks about the short-term memory having a capacity for seven, plus or minus two. (This was f rst discussed in a well-known paper The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two, published in 1956 by US cognitive psychologist George A Miller, who

So whether you are deciding on a cheese, a mobile plan or a career path, your brain is being called on to work hard

said the human brain has the short-term memory capacity of about seven pieces of information.) The problem is when that capacity is stretched by too many choices. Sharman gives an example of buying cheese. Let’s say you have three rules for buying cheese, “for example, it has to be a particular price [less than $10], it can’t be a particular brand, and you don’t like a particular type [such as gouda].” She adds that some people might have seven rules, others have 10, but these rules help us make decisions, dozens of decisions, every day. “There is a lot of cognitive process going on in a fairly simple decision,” Sharman adds.

But a simple decision can be complicated if you are confronted with 37 brands of cheese. In terms of shopping, for this reason, says Sharman, some people prefer smaller shopping centres which stock a limited range of brands they know.“Manufacturers know this,” she adds, which is why brand loyalty is so important to manufacturers and corporations. They know if they build customer loyalty, there is no decision to make, as you’ll always head for their brand. Given all the cognitive processing that goes on, “there certainly is a reasonable proposition that too much choice overwhelms,” Sharman says. “And that can [lead to] stress. “I am not quite sure I would say it creates depression, but it does create confusion.” So whether you are deciding on a cheese, a mobile plan or a career path, your brain is being called on to work hard. Schwartz isn’t the only one with an interest in the concept. A well-documented experiment by psychologists Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper took place in a Californian grocery shop in 2000. Researchers set up a table where customers could sample jam. On the f rst day the researchers offered 24 varieties of jam. The next day just six were offered for sampling. While more buyers stopped at the table offering 24 jams, when it came to buying, a healthy 30 per cent of those who stopped at the six-jam table bought a jar, while only three per cent of those who were presented with 24 jams went on to buy a jar. Still, Schwartz concedes some people cope very well with an abundance of choice. Those who strive to always make the right choice have a harder time than those who are satisf ed with ‘good enough’. Sharman agrees. “It comes back to cognitive capacity, so elderly people and children – their ability to make decisions is not so great,” she tells MWP, adding that you might even f nd yourself more indecisive when you are sick or run down. “Some people also have more of an anxious continued page 10 >

“The advice is to stay away from busy shopping centres. People will often have a local store that is a lot smaller – and they deliberately shop there”

disposition.” These people might lie awake at night worrying about the decisions they have made whereas others mightn’t give choice and decision making a second thought. Parents will know that for kids, too much choice can create plenty of anxiety. “You have to be really careful you can’t overwhelm them,” advises Sharman. “Shops and advertisers have got you – these people are brilliant [at marketing].” Frazzled parents are advised to avoid taking children into shops where the child is asked to make a decision on, say, which treat he or she would like. Instead, Sharman suggests buying a couple of treats and asking the child to choose at home. Or if you want your children to choose their outf ts for the day, present them with a couple of options rather than the whole wardrobe. “[Making a choice] does empower them a bit – but there are rules.” So what do you do if you f nd yourself struck by indecision when you have to make a choice? “The advice is to stay away from busy shopping centres,” Sharman says. “People will often have a local store that is a lot smaller – and they deliberately shop there.” When faced with big decisions, such as which job to take or which university course to apply for, is it as simple as drawing up a pros and cons list? “Yes it

is,” Sharman adds. “It is helpful and if you are anxious and worried, get help from someone who is good at [making a decision].” So if you need a new car, don’t brave the car yards alone – take along a friend who knows cars and is happy helping you decide. There is plenty of evidence that the corporate machine is listening to overwhelmed consumers. According to Iyengar, after Proctor & Gamble (the US multinational company that manufactures beauty products, snack foods and detergent), heard about her jam experiment, the company reduced the varieties of its well-loved Head & Shoulders shampoo from 26 to 15 and were rewarded with a 10 per cent jump in sales. All this also comes at a time when the anti-globalisation movement has encouraged a backlash by consumers against all this choice. We are all being encouraged to shop locally, be content with seasonal fruits and vegies and live simpler, more eco-friendly lives. We are told the path to happiness is found by de-cluttering our wardrobes and our lives, eschewing social media and turning our backs on our 500 Facebook friends. Restaurants are simplifying menus, while some advocates call for us to turn from the multinational stores and support farmers markets and corner shops. So is choice good or bad? Well, you decide.

ustralia’s tropical and subtropical marine life are on the move as a result of warming waters and experts advise it could lead to changes in fishing and tourism practices. A University of the Sunshine Coast academic has played a key role in an international study that shows marine life is moving much faster towards the earth’s poles than land-based organisms in response to climate change. The research, featured in scientif c journal Nature Climate Change this week was led by CSIRO’s Climate Adaption Flagship and University of

Queensland marine ecologists. USC academic Dr David Schoeman says the study is the f rst global meta-analysis of marine ecological impacts of climate change. “We found that, on average, marine organisms are moving three to 10 times faster than land-based organisms,” Schoeman says. “We also found that the timing of seasonal events, like breeding and blooming, is changing faster in the ocean than on land, although only slightly. UQ marine ecologist Dr Elvira Poloczanska says tropical and subtropical species of f sh, molluscs and plankton from Australia’s south-east are shifting much further south through the Tasman Sea. She says the f ndings indicate widespread reorganisation of marine ecosystems and are likely to have signif cant repercussions for humans. “For example, some of the favourite catches of recreational and commercial f shers are likely to decline, while other species, not previously in the area, could provide new f shing opportunities.”

Mooloolah’s business community is encouraging locals to back the ‘I Give a Moo for Mooloolah’ campaign in a bid to boost economic activity in the hinterland town. Mooloolah IGA part owner Ken Grant says the town is not going backwards but with almost zero growth, it is also not going forward. “We’re encouraging locals to buy locally,” Grant says. If locals spend their moolah in Mooloolah it has a multiplier effect throughout the town and he says if everyone spent an extra one or two dollars in each store it will have a signif cant difference. The campaign was launched last week. Businesses believe locals will embrace it and they hope it will bring more Coast residents to town.

[ Community helps design new Beerwah streetscape

Artist’s impression of the Simpson Street upgrade Beerwah’s Simpson Street is undergoing a $4 million facelift as part of the PLACE+ Beerwah Council Action Plan. Place Management and Delivery Portfolio Councillor Greg Rogerson says the council undertook extensive community engagement as part of the PLACE+ Beerwah project before planning the Simpson Street improvements, to be completed by February 2014. “PLACE+ Beerwah uses Place Making principles, a philosophy based on building better communities and

creating better places to live by focusing on long-term commitments to people, places and partnerships,” Rogerson says. “Through PLACE+ Beerwah, council is working with the community to develop Beerwah’s character, community pride and its future economic stimulation.” Division one councillor Rick Baberowski says, “This upgrade will bring a fresh look and feel to Beerwah, while retaining the modern country feel that is valued by the community. “The end result will be a safe, pedestrian-friendly town centre that considers environmental sustainability, continues tourism links with the Glass House Mountains and strengthens local business in the area.” The upgrade will include improved road infrastructure, raised pedestrian crossings, new seating and provisions for outdoor dining, landscape design and active open space including increased footpath space, improved lighting, shade trees and public art.

New flood boats, ambulances for Coast Two new flood boats and three new ambulance vehicles have been delivered to emergency service stations across the Sunshine Coast. Find out why Anxiety, Nervousness, and Panic Attacks happen to you and how to overcome it! Do you wake in the morning feeling anxious for no apparent reason? Do you f nd yourself with panic overwhelming you through the day when nothing is planned? You might feel nervous about going to work or when the phone rings, when there’s nothing to be worried about. This can go on for months or years, and will cause debilitating emotions, reducing your ability to work, and cause relationship problems at home. There are a number of underlying causes that contribute to symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and poor concentration can also occur. Even though it seems psychological, and you may have issues in your life contributing to it, there are two very common physical problems that cause your symptoms to feel more extreme than they should feel. These affect the nervous system, causing your f ght/ f ight response to over-react. A malicious infection has been found to be a contributing factor in up to 90% of tested patients. It’s

picked up from overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is only detected in specialised testing. This infection releases a toxin affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It’s not often been associated with mental health, though studies show its impact on the brain. It’s passed on very easily, so more than one person in a household may suffer from similar symptoms. You will also f nd some people can carry this infection with no symptoms whatsoever, as it seems to act when there are other health or stress related problems. Often we’re able to correlate the f rst sign of symptoms, coinciding with a stomach bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. It’s passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work. It’s quite easy to treat, when done properly, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. Infections are just one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating anxiety and other mental health conditions. These steps have been proven with testing to improve the brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication.

en working in the mining industry are at no more risk of mental illness or suicide than in other sectors of the workforce, a new study has shown. Researchers at Griff th University’s Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP) studied the suggestion men working in the resources sector suffer higher rates of mental illness than other workers. The study, which was released at a mental health conference on the Gold Coast on Tuesday, found that premise was based on largely anecdotal evidence and that in fact, miners were not at a higher risk of mental illness. “Our study, in fact, found very little evidence of poor mental health or emotional wellbeing among miners,” AISRAP senior research fellow Dr Samara McPhedran says. “This doesn’t mean miners don’t face work-related stresses and diff culties; it just means that those

experiences don’t necessarily lead to mental illness or elevated suicide risk.” McPhedran says the f ndings suggest targeting issues such as work-family balance within the resources sector would be more effective than tackling assumptions of widespread, clinically signif cant mental health problems. ONDON – Scientists have unveiled the world’s first lab-grown beef burger, serving it up to volunteers in London in what they hope is the start of a food revolution. The 140-gram patty, which cost more than £250,000 ($375,375) to produce, has been made using strands of meat grown from muscle cells taken from a living cow. Mixed with salt, egg powder and breadcrumbs to improve the taste, and coloured with red beetroot juice and saffron, researchers claim it will taste similar to a normal burger. Professor Mark Post of Maastricht University in The Netherlands, whose lab developed the meat, says the burger is safe and has the potential to replace normal meat in the diets of millions of people. He brought it into a news conference at a TV studio on a tray and served to two volunteers, US-based food author Josh Schonwald and Austrian food researcher Hanni Ruetzler. After taking a mouthful, Ruetzler said, “I was expecting the texture to be more soft… I know there is no fat in it so I didn’t know how juicy it would be. “It’s close to meat. It’s not that juicy. The consistency is perfect

[

Professor Mark Post from Maastricht University holds the world’s f rst lab-grown beef burger [but] I miss salt and pepper.” There are concerns that the growing demand for meat is putting unsustainable pressure on the planet, both through the food required for the animals and the methane gas they produce, which contributes to global warming. “What we are going to attempt is important because I hope it will show cultured beef has the answers to major problems that the world faces,” Post says. “Our burger is made from muscle cells taken from a cow. We haven’t altered them in any way. For it to succeed it has to look, feel and hopefully taste like the real thing.” Although it is very expensive, the costs of cultured beef are likely to fall as more is produced and it could be available in supermarkets within 10 to 20 years. THE WEEK THAT WAS

PROS AND CONS OF LOW INTEREST RATES

Mark Davi dson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

T

he current low interest rate environment is a doubleedged sword. On one hand, it’s great for investors who use gearing, and home buyers who are able to borrow at record low interest rates. Conversely, retirees seeking income are struggling to find returns in the traditional areas of cash and term deposits. So what is in store for us from an interest rate perspective? High levels of government debt around the world should have several long-term impacts including: lower than normal growth in the developed world; low inf ation; central banks maintaining low interest rates; and high valuation multiples as

investors effectively bid up asset prices while chasing yield. While the Australian Government does not have excessively high debt levels, we are still feeling the f ow-on effect of a number of these factors. Europe, the US, the UK and Japan are experiencing artif cially low interest rates, at close to zero. These rates place upward pressure on the currencies of those countries running traditional interest rate policies. Such is the case in Australia, the drawback being it has tended to act as a handbrake on economic growth. Thus, an artif cially high dollar also means slower Australian economic growth. The central bank’s role in all of this is to keep a lid on inf ation while maintaining stable employment levels. However, with an artif cially high dollar, interest rates need to come down to stimulate economic activity. The question is, where will rates bottom out? No one, including the RBA, really knows. It would appear that cash rates of three per cent or below are the new

[ 20 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ AUG UST 9, 2013

20.indd 1

normal for Australia. It also appears this will be the case for a long time – possibly f ve years or longer. It is in the best interests of countries with high levels of sovereign debt to keep interest rates artif cially low until their debt levels have been brought under control, and that may take decades. This means retirees will have to look at a portfolio oriented towards higher yielding investments, such as shares and property trusts. It also means home buyers have an opportunity to purchase and use this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pay down debt quickly. However, in the past, governments have resorted to excessive money printing to manage their sovereign debt issues, which has eventually led to high inf ation and interest rates. That may be in the pipeline, but is unlikely in the short to medium term. Mark Davidson is an Authorised Representative (no 427049) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. ‘BELIEVE IN YOURSELF’ AND ‘STAY IN THE LOOP’, WINNERS SAY As part of our coverage of the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards, MWP chats with two more winners from last year. This week Jainey Bennett and Lisa Harrison ref ect on the past 12 months. The Professional Business Woman of the Year Award winner was Lisa Harrison from POMO Q. Tell us about your business. A. POMO is a boutique creative agency specialising in consumer engagement. Based in Brisbane and the Coast, we offer creative, website design and development, digital marketing services and consultation. In 2010 I developed a range of workshops to educate businesses on social media tools. In 2011,

Jainey Bennett, from EZYFIT Health & Fitness Clubs, was named Corporate Business Woman of the Year Q. Tell us about your business. A. EZYFIT landed on the Sunshine Coast in April 2011. It took only 15 months to become not only the

I developed Australia’s f rst Social Media Mastery (SMM) Certif cate IV Business course, which is now being offered in Queensland and NSW with a view to being available in Victoria, WA and online. Q. What did winning the award last year mean to you? A. Just being nominated gave me a sense of achievement. It also served as great validation of our model and direction. It increased the trust I have in my instincts as a skill. Through the application process, I was able to see small gaps in my systems and processes. Q. How has it helped your business and profile in the past 12 months?

A. Winning the award gave me authority to speak about digital literacy and online child safety. I also secured government funding to educate businesses that had been affected by the 2011 Brisbane f oods. The award has given me substantial credibility to trade and negotiate with local and state government bodies. The contract was a huge learning curve and led to gaining clarity, both in the business objectives of POMO and in what I really wanted from my life. Q. What does the future hold? A. irst things first friends: do me a favour and take your index finger, put it in your ear and give it a wiggle. I know right, it sounds like Pac Man. That’s just a little gift from me to you, a little something you can use when you’re out and about this weekend drinking beers. I reckon some of the best times of our lives are spent just shooting the breeze and drinking the amber with good buddies. Of course, it doesn’t matter if your stories or jokes have more holes in them than an Essendon footballer’s right arm, it’s all in the delivery right? Last night in the dark I reached for my liquid Viagra, but instead I skulled Liquid Paper. This morning I woke up with a huge correction. That’s not a joke. Awkward. But this is – it’s the anti-mum-in-law themed Budweiser gag. “Your mumin-law sure is a nice lady, Budweiser her face so ugly?” Yes it’s a little rough but it’s sure to get a chuckle. Of course, this piece of comedy gold leads us to this week’s choice

brew, bro. From the land of the red, white and blue comes America’s signature beer, Budweiser, the self-proclaimed King of Beers. If nothing else, the makers of this famous lager have given us hilarious TV ads over the years, but it’s fair to say the beer goes alright too. This little number is produced using an all-natural beechwood ageing process, bringing together the best barley malt, rice and the choicest hops to create a unique, smooth beer with extreme drinkability. Some peeps might suggest there’s not much complexity with the Bud when it comes to taste, making it a little bland, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s a cracking session beer and is almost good enough to make me forgive America for the Ben Aff eck movie Pearl Harbour. Actually, it’s not that good. I give the King of Beers a ‘yee-hah’ 3.5 out of f ve. BUDWEISER King of Beers 5% AV, 355ml from Northshore Tavern

hen it comes to recommending cars, 22.5 million satisfied customers can’t be wrong. That’s how many buyers have signed on the dotted line to own a Volkswagen Beetle in this remarkable car’s 75-year history. The world’s most iconic motor vehicle, f rst launched way back in 1938, is writing a new chapter. The Volkswagen Beetle has been reprised for the third time – an all-new model will replace the so-called ‘New Beetle’, which

enjoyed a somewhat checkered existence since its launch in 1998. This one they’re calling the ‘21st Century Beetle’ – fair enough, I guess, because it pushes that same endearing, quirky design into a thoroughly modern space. The family resemblance is unmistakable, yet this latest Beetle combines that nostalgic feel-good factor with some truly cuttingedge technology. The previous Beetle was criticised, with some justif cation, for being more gimmick than genuine

car. It was essentially a retro-shaped shell plonked onto the running gear of a Volkswagen Golf, not in itself such a bad thing, but its pricing was out of kilter with that of the donor machine, giving rise to the suspicion that Volkswagen was really just cashing in on the nostalgic, feelgood factor of the Beetle brand. The signature plastic f ower in the dashboard typif ed the gimmickry. Mind you, a million of these New Beetles were sold, including about 9000 in Australia, so it can’t have been all bad. continued page 32>

<from page 30 The 21st Century Beetle is a different kettle of f sh. The f ower’s gone, for a start. But it feels much more like a purpose-built machine – more thoughtful, less compromised, less form over function. Volkswagen boasts it is longer,

predecessor. From certain angles it almost evokes visions of an early Porsche 911. Well, almost. And while it won’t ever match the driving dynamics of its corporate cousin, the Beetle is more than satisfying to drive. The perky TSI engine (118 kilowatts, 240 Newton

area, in particular, is a welcome improvement (310 litres compared to the previous skimpy 209), while front and rear head and legroom are both markedly improved. The split-fold rear seat arrangement offers even greater f exibility in the load space. Inside, where the previous Beetle

metres of torque), combined with a quick-shifting seven-speed DSG transmission, allows the Beetle to pack more than enough punch for an urban-focused car of this nature. Its nimble handling, light steering and decent all-round vision make it a great city car, a trait enhanced by the stop-start engine system which helps bolster its impressive fuel-eff ciency (6.4 litres per 100 kilometres combined) by turning off the engine in heavy traff c. The Beetle might never be regarded as the most practical car of its generation, but the new model provides more passenger comfort and storage space than before. The hatchback-style cargo

made some odd compromises to accommodate the famous body shape, this one works perfectly well. And whereas previous Beetles have often relied on the Volkswagen spare parts bin for their cockpit componentry, this one has the feel of a purpose-built, beautifully designed cabin. It looks retro but still wonderfully modern at the same time, with vivid instruments, a vivid central touch screen and funky, functional switchgear. The nostalgia cues are still in plentiful supply, though, including the glovebox (a reprise from the original Beetle) and the painted fascia panel which stretches across

It looks retro but still wonderfully modern at the same time, with vivid instruments, a vivid central touch screen and funky, functional switchgearr

wider, lower and more masculine – hard to argue with that – a reimagining, rather than a recreation of an iconic machine. It stands out in just about every area that its predecessor didn’t. For a start, it’s truly rewarding to drive. Its engine is one of the best going. Volkswagen’s clever 1.4-litre TSI combines a turbo-charger and supercharger to squeeze remarkable performance and economy from a tiny capacity engine. Handling and ride are also a rung or two above the previous Beetle. Outside, the Beetle looks sleeker, better proportioned and less deliberately feminine than its

the width of the dash. That’s seamlessly blended with some high-tech touches, including the slick Media Device Interface (touch screen with sat nav option), Bluetooth, dual-zone climate-control air, parking sensors and power windows and mirrors. Sensibly, the designers have opted for a four-seat format, rather than trying to squeeze an extra passenger into the back. Rear seats are reasonably accessible for a two-door machine but it’s probably better suited to kids or f exible teens. The Beetle will be offered in two specif cations only – a Technology pack offering Bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime driving lights and other convenience options; or a sports pack with smart 18-inch alloys, tinted windows, sports instruments and gearshift paddles. The latter was the spec for our test vehicle and despite its still adorable looks, it fulf lled the ‘sports’ promise with sharp performance and agile road manners. VW says handling is partly due to special body welding techniques that make it one of the most rigid cars in its segment. A six-speed manual is available but the dual-clutch auto is so good one wonders why you’d bother. Volkswagen has already offered up a special edition called the Fender, in honour of the legendary electric guitar. Don’t ask me why. No doubt we’ll also see a convertible option in due course, which wouldn’t be a bad thing. However, it’s to be hoped they don’t let the marketing department take too much control of this reimagined, revisited retro machine. After 75 years, they’ve just about got the recipe right.

The show, which aims to honour Ford’s racing heritage with a collection of early models, classic muscle and the latest FPV models, enables Ford owners to show off their vehicles and Ford lovers to view and hear them. A dynamometer will be another feature of the show, enabling vehicle owners to measure the performance of their cars on the day. The Total Performance Car Show is on from 9am to 3pm on Sunday at Pacif c Ford and FPV, 122-124 Sugar Road. It is a free community event.

Honda NSX hits race track A prototype of the Honda NSX has given motorsport fans a rare look at the future of hybrid supercars in Ohio for the Honda Indy 200 IndyCar Series race last month. The NSX prototype retains the proportions of the concept car debut at last year’s Detroit motor show and will be powered by a direct-injected V6 petrol engine mated to the brand’s SH-AWD (super-handling All Wheel Drive) system. The Sport Hybrid SH-AWD combines the use of three electric motors – one integrated with the petrol and two motors driving the front wheels. Australians have been told not to hold their breath on this one.

1934 Ford BB Flathead V8 pick-up truck, a 1955 Thunderbird Roadster and a 2005 Mustang GT convertible are among more than 120 Ford Performance Vehicles on show on the Coast this weekend. The f fth annual Total Performance Car Show, organised by Pacif c Ford and the Ford Performance Vehicle Supporters Club, is expected to draw thousands of Ford enthusiasts from far and wide. Pacif c Ford branch manager Greg Manchester says one 80-year-old enthusiast is driving his GT from Nanango especially for the car show. He’s one of the oldest members of the Queensland GT Owner’s Club. A large contingent is coming from the Gold Coast and others from north and south of the Sunshine Coast. “It has a fairly strong following, Manchester says, adding that the free community event, which will be held at the Pacif c Ford dealership on Sugar Road, Maroochydore, is expected to draw up to 3000 people on Sunday. The popular event started f ve years ago out of a demand from Pacif c Ford’s Performance Vehicle buying customer base. “A lot of the people that own these cars have some kind of a connection, Manchester says.

The winning strategy GOT YOUR EYE ON A PROPERTY THAT’S GOING TO AUCTION? GORDON MACDONALD FROM JASON ANDREW GROUP HAS SOME HOT TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE IT YOURS ON THE DAY.

A

uction day is an ideal opportunity for both buyer and seller to come together in the most transparent way possible and walk away with an unconditional sale. The vast majority of sellers are mentally and emotionally ready to transact on the day, even to the point where they may actually be more willing than at any other point in the campaign to moderate their price expectations. The latest data shows that so far this year, vendors who sold their properties under the hammer were willing to reduce their reserve price by an average of 4.49 per cent to achieve a sale on auction day. Despite this favourable dynamic, many buyers who register to bid fail to make any bid at all – this year around 43.1 per cent of all buyers. Many of those people, despite clearly interested in buying a property, may well have missed out purely due to their fear of acting in the auction environment. The best way to overcome this fear and have the best chance of securing an auction property is to attend the auction already having decided on a clear bidding strategy. There are a number of different strategies people can choose to employ to beat the competition, but there’s no right or wrong way. While there are any number of different variations or combinations of strategies you can use, the key is to pick one and stick with it. After all, the only strategy that clearly doesn’t work and will def nitely not buy you a property is to register but not make any bid at all.

[ 36 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ AUG UST 9, 2013

36.indd 1

The turtle

The turtle strategy involves determination and a commitment to be the highest bidder at the lowest possible price. Small bids are placed directly over every other bid – perhaps in increments as low as $1000 or even less. This assertive strategy gives the impression that you are there until the end no matter what, and may deter other buyers.

The early bird

With this strategy, you make the very f rst bid as soon as the auction starts. Statistically, the person who bids f rst is very often the successful buyer. Although we’re not really sure why this is the case, getting in early gives the competition a clear message you’re serious about buying the property.

The straight bat The late play

The late play involves holding back from making any bid until the bidding slows and the increments have gotten smaller, then coming in over the top with a bid that’s signif cantly higher than the competition. Depending on the property price, this bid could be between $5000 and 50,000 higher. Other buyers are often put off by the conf dence shown by a strong bid late in the game.

Playing off a straight bat is exactly that – deciding before the auction the very most you’d be willing to pay for the property and then making a one-off bid as early as possible. With this strategy, you’re letting the seller and other buyers know your highest price straightaway, allowing fate to take its course. Perhaps the least stressful of all options, it’s also often successful as your top bid is likely to be higher than where other buyers may have started the bidding, and may put them off participating.

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 With Jupiter jumping through your domestic zone, you’re in the mood to redecorate or relocate – preferably somewhere with more space. Restless rams need room to move.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Saturday is your best day, as you socialise with friends or share fun activities with a child. With the sun and Mercury in your domestic zone, it’s time to get talking with family members.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 This weekend favours lively conversation and creative communication, as you enjoy time with someone special. Be sure to think before you speak – or you’ll put your foot in it.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Work and family are a tricky juggle now. Uranus is broadening your career options, but the moon and Pluto are making sure there are extra personal responsibilities too.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 You’re keen to help someone in need but don’t promise more than you can practically deliver. Learn to walk your talk. Plus listen closely to what a loved one has to say.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Aim to get the balance right between being busy in the big wide world, and spending quiet solo time in a place that has special meaning for you. You need some R & R – ASAP!

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 A loved one may surprise you with an unpredictable move. Don’t assume the old way of doing things is the best. It’s time for laidback Librans to stay abreast of current developments.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 With taskmaster Saturn moving slowly through your sign, don’t spend so much time focusing on your faults that you fail to capitalise on your talents. Celebrate your Scorpio strengths!

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 You’re keen to focus on financial matters as you buy, sell, invest, trade or just spend. But don’t let a friend talk you into buying something you really don’t need. Use your discretion.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 The stars favour revising and researching, and tying up loose ends before you launch into ambitious new projects. Take a close look at what’s going on behind the glossy exterior.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Expect a frantic weekend where you’re running around all over the place. Are you actually achieving anything? If you pace yourself and prioritise, you’ll accomplish a lot more.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Are some of your friends holding you back and criticising your dreams? Over the next few weeks, Mars and Jupiter give you the motivation to find some supportive new mates.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Troubles, what troubles? That’s what I was saying last weekend paddling back out for another wave! Man, oh man what a weekend it was. Then Monday I look out to see whales breaching. Life is good. Okay, okay so this weekend there will be more WSW winds with a northerly wind popping up. Happy Valley should be the spot for families and those learning to surf – it will be spectacular, though waves will be small. If you hit it early, A Bay might be worth a walk. Remember, if you decide to join the alternative crew around there, take zinc! If you know what I mean. It’s that time when the Billabong Tahiti Pro starts – with epic waves that us mere mortals just sit back and swear at in disbelief. Hop on YouTube and look at Code Red footage – it should get you primed. There is so much great footage, even one of Kelly Slater with a beer in the barrel from a few years back. The sun is shining, the wind is offshore, the whales are jumping, the f sh are biting and the water is clear for diving. Have a cracking weekend!

FISHING REPORT

with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Tailor are on the bite just inside the Maroochy Bar with chrome lures working during the day and pillies on the rising tide at night. There are enough bream around for a feed with better quality at night. White bait and yabbies are the best baits. Quality whiting are around the old oyster leases at Bli Bli. SURF: Pincushion is the place to be for quality tailor using pillies at dusk and through the high tide. The odd jew has been taken whilst feeding with the tailor, so be prepared just in case. Sea bream are off Alexandra Headland using mullet f llet and pilly pieces. OFFSHORE: The outer Gneerings are producing some oversized sweetlip on whole pilchards or live baits. A few rat kingies are hanging around the Blinker. Barwon Banks has been returning snapper, pearl perch and rosy job f sh and will continue to f re with the new moon, with mid-water f oaters best. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon has been producing some nice bass on spinner baits just off the rocks near the dam wall with conditions being ideal for trolling lures over weedy patches.
