hen I was a child my diet was very simple. Toast or cereal for breakfast, sandwiches and fruit for lunch and meat and two veg for dinner. It was, I assume, a diet not too dissimilar to the ones my parents grew up with, though mum tells me as a child she always had a cooked breakfast – chops, tomato and egg. In my childhood kitchen there were always homemade biscuits to dunk in your tea and plenty of butter to slather on the mashed potato. We ate meat every day, enjoyed full cream milk (was skim milk even a thing?) and never considered what a carbohydrate was. The low-fat, no-sugar brigade would probably tsk-tsk that sort of diet, but you know, none of us was overweight, we didn’t often get sick, antibiotics were unnecessary and few suffered food allergies. How times have changed. As our foods get

] more complicated we seem to be getting fatter, sicker and harder on ourselves. And after reading this week’s cover story, you’ll see the connection. Sam Walker has been on the food trail and has discovered that far from giving our bodies nutrition, the modern diet is making us unwell, and she has some great advice for those who want to do something about it. If you don’t give much thought to the food you consume, it’s time to throw away that low-fat, sugar-free, chemically enhanced snack and turn to page 6. You’ll be glad you did. Also on the menu this week is our new my body section. In this we cover beauty and health news and views. That’s on page 30. And it’s that time again when the kids (and their teachers) have a break from school, so we have our holiday fun guide to help you keep the little ones entertained. That starts on page 27.

Real food revolution THROW OUT THE LOW-FAT MARGARINE AND GRAB SOME BUTTER – TODAY’S DEFINITION OF HEALTHY EATING IS UNDERGOING A MAJOR CHANGE. BY SAM WALKER

Y

ou are what you eat. It’s an age-old cliche that we’re all too familiar with. But do you really know what you are eating, and more importantly, do you care? In this fast-paced, time-poor world, convenience living has become a priority and it is made easier by the ever-burgeoning range of highly processed foods and supplements we stock our pantries with. Combined with increasing messages about healthy eating and dietary fads that include consuming low fat, no fat, no carbs or high protein among thousands of others, it is not surprising that food is becoming highly complex, confusing and stressful. But Sunshine Coast nutritionist, author and founder of Changing Habits, Cyndi O’Meara, says food should not be complicated. “It’s just the food industry has made it complex. Nature has never made it complex,” O’Meara says. She believes understanding what goes into the food we eat is crucial for our long-term health and wellbeing. “I think if people don’t take an active participation in what they’re eating then they

[ 6 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ SE P TE M B E R 20, 2 0 1 3

6.indd 1

choose to take an active participation in their downward spiral,” she says. “When you become actively involved in the food you create then you become an active and responsible participant in your health. So that’s how important it is.” O’Meara says with the rapid escalation of health issues ranging from heart disease and cancer to autism and in the past decade, a 10-fold increase in allergies, it is time we stopped and looked at our dietary habits. “Obviously it’s not working because we’re sick, fat and nearly dead,” she says. And she attributes much of it to our dependence on antibiotics, our fear of bacteria and the ever-increasing number of preservatives we consume. “The food industry has f gured out how to make you think you’re eating real food but in actual fact you’re just eating a bunch of chemicals.” She says one of the most important things you can do is read the ingredients and not the nutritional panel on packaging. “If there is a number, a colour or a f avour or a name that you think ‘what the hell is that?’ put it back. “If it has a shelf life of 50 years, forget it.” The margarine experiment is a great one people can do at home – put a tub of marge in

your pantry and leave it for f ve years. O’Meara says it won’t go off. Real, natural food will deteriorate and bacteria will grow on it. “Nobody’s looking at ingredients – everybody’s looking at the fat, salt and sugar.” People are being misguided or getting confused by branding, packaging and labelling and many automatically pick up a low-fat or no-sugar product or a ‘health bar’ without reading what other ingredients it contains. ‘No sugar’ often means a chemical sweetener is added, while there are different kinds of fat and not all of them are bad. “We have an evolutionary path that depended on fat, salt and sugar,” O’Meara says. She advocates the best thing for our bodies is to eat as close to nature as possible. For Julie Shelton, director of the Sunshine Coast Real Food Festival, food is not just about our physical health and survival – it’s also about our emotional wellbeing. “We forget that food needs to nourish us on all different levels,” Shelton says. She believes food is an experience that needs to be enjoyed and preferably shared. We celebrate with food, we grieve with food, we bond over food M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

No need to quit sugar

Sugar is an important part of our diet and never something we should deny ourselves. Just make sure the sugar you’re consuming is not refined and is rich in vitamins and minerals.

Salt is a great part of a healthy and balanced diet. Natural salt is a rich source of minerals and trace elements, which play a crucial role in the healthy functioning of the body. Examples include the importance of calcium in forming healthy teeth and bones, and iron in helping the blood transport oxygen to all parts of the body. Vitamins and minerals on ingredients lists that end in ‘ide’ or ‘ate’ have been created in a chemical laboratory and should be avoided. Anything listed as a ‘flavouring’, natural or otherwise, is normally comprised of as many as 48 different ingredients and has been chemically created. Artificial sweeteners are not your friend. Unlike real sugar, artif cial sweeteners contain chemicals and additives that can have serious health ramifications. Put the diet products down! FROM CYNDI O’MEARA

Sait says humus is the only storage system for nitrates in the soil, it cleanses other contaminants that can impact on our food and it stores water and carbon. He believes increasing humus in the soil is the key to saving the planet from its destructive path of climate change, and farmers are at the heart of the revolution. “Food producers are involved in the most important profession on the planet and they are not recognised for this,” he says. “When we choose to buy food from those practising biological farming, we are supporting the system that is proven to sequester carbon from the atmosphere via humus building.” And Sait says it is something everyone can and should be contributing to, whether it is through continued over >

making your own compost, or buying produce from those who use sustainable farming practices. “The biological approach is based upon much better agronomy than the simplistic chemical approach. The changes are obvious in the f rst season.” He says there is a link between soil health, human health, animal health and planetary health. The Sunshine Coast has a vibrant and growing food industry made up of growers, manufacturers, restaurants and cafes dedicated to producing and serving fresh, quality food. The growing interest in farmers markets, natural foods and people wanting to get to know their local food suppliers indicates consumers are becoming more knowledgeable about the food they eat and more empowered in the choices they make. It is food for thought for all of us. For more information head to changinghabits.com.au and nutri-tech.com.au.

PRIVATE HOSPITAL ON THE HOME STRETCH

T

he countdown has begun. The opening of the Sunshine Coast’s newest private hospital is less than two months away. Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital will open its doors to patients on Monday November 4. The building program is almost complete, with f nal works now in progress. About 130 workers are on site every day, with more than 700,000 construction hours now completed. Hospital CEO Kimberley Pierce says it is exciting to see the construction works coming to an end. “After close to two years of construction, we are now only two months away from welcoming our f rst patients,” Pierce says. “Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital will deliver a comprehensive range of inpatient and day services across a wide range of specialties, providing increased private hospital capacity and choice for patients on the Sunshine Coast.”

Fines for wild parties

The f nishing touches are being added to the hospital with f touts in pharmacy, pathology and radiology underway. Landscaping works are progressing well, and asphalting of the roads and at-grade parking areas has begun. The remaining external canopies and shelters have been completed. Final defecting to the internal building is underway.

NEW RELEASE

The 200-bed private hospital will contain single-patient rooms with ensuites. Onsite facilities will include six state-of-the-art operating theatres, day procedure room, day surgery unit, cardiac catheter laboratory, day oncology unit and intensive care unit. Medical consulting suites, pathology and radiology services are also located onsite.

Organisers of out-of-control Facebook parties could face tough penalties after new legislation was introduced in parliament last week. Police minister Jack Dempsey says the new legislation will ensure those who wasted police time and resources by organising parties that are not properly supervised and become out of control face the consequences. “I have had enough, the police have had enough and the community has had enough of alcohol and drug-fuelled violence stemming from suburban parties,” Dempsey says. If passed, the bill will include a maximum penalty of up to 12 months imprisonment or a $12,100 f ne for a person who organises a party that becomes out of control.

70 NEW JOBS FOR BLI BLI LOCALS

T

he multimillion-dollar redevelopment of the Bli Bli Supa IGA is set to be a boost for local jobseekers with up to 70 full-time, part-time and casual positions now up for grabs. Store owners Michael and Roz White are holding a recruitment day tomorrow at the temporary IGA store at the River Markets centre from noon to 2pm, to offer locals the f rst opportunity to apply for employment in different departments of the store including grocery, delicatessen, produce, freezer/dairy and meat. “There’s a good selection of assistant-level positions on offer, which will suit all sorts of people and the good news is that we are not necessarily looking for people with experience in retail but those who have the right attitude, enjoy interacting with customers and are achievement oriented,” says Michael. “No appointments are necessary, all we want

people to do is bring along their resume and a covering letter and tell us why they would like to join our friendly and Roz White dynamic team when we open our brand-new Supa IGA store in October this year,” he adds. Roz says the White’s business philosophy has always been based around encouraging community spirit and engagement. “We support a whole host of community organisations as well as local suppliers and contractors and this recruitment drive is another fantastic opportunity to support locals and create long term job opportunities,” she says.

Early-bird tickets for Caloundra Music Festival now sold out Tickets are selling fast for Caloundra Music Festival, which will be held across four days from October 4 to 7. The festival is now in its seventh year and organisers are expecting 24,000 tickets to be sold. Around 50 per cent of those tickets are sold to Sunshine Coast locals, meaning half of the festival-goers will be visiting the Coast from interstate or even overseas. Two early-bird releases have already sold out, but local music lovers can still secure tickets to see more than

65 national, international and local bands. There are a range of ticket options available, from season tickets, which include all four days, to three-day weekend or single-day passes. Children 12 and under, youth aged 13 to 17 and pension card holders are entitled to reduced ticket prices. And for the ultimate festival experience, don’t forget camping tickets, which can be purchased online for the Caloundra State Primary School ovals until October 1 or until sold out. Visit caloundramusicfestival.com.

Ironman 70.3 brings 2000 athletes to the Coast The Sunshine Coast played host to nearly 2000 athletes from around the world for the inaugural Ironman 70.3 last weekend. Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson says the Ironman 70.3 is the fastest growing triathlon series in the world and a great addition to the Coast’s event calendar.

The event was staged at Mooloolaba, with swimmers taking to the waters off Mooloolaba Beach, cyclists riding to Mt Coolum and the run staged along the Esplanade between Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland. The Mooloolaba event joins 59 events held in 24 countries that serve as qualif ers for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

RSL PLANS WWI EXHIBITION Maroochy RSL is planning an exhibition of rare World War I photographs next August to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. The RSL is teaming up with Ted’s Cameras in Maroochydore, with the local business donating time, expertise and photo stock to prepare the images from negatives donated to the Maroochy Military Museum in 2012. Maroochy RSL president Michael Liddelow is grateful for the support of Ted’s Cameras and is excited to see the f nal results. “Sean and Michelle have been fantastic help and we really appreciate their support and assistance,” Liddelow says. “These photos offer a rare insight into a signif cant period of Australian history and we cannot wait to unveil them to the Sunshine Coast community for the 100th anniversary of World War I.” It took an extensive investigation by Maroochy RSL director Drew

Michael Liddelow and Drew Wall present Michelle Fraser with a certif cate of appreciation for help preparing World War I images Wall to track down the relatives of the soldiers and medics pictured in the negatives. The negatives belonged to 3134 Private George Frederick Cherry, known as Eric, who arrived in Gallipoli on August 30, 1915 and served as a medic with the 6 Field Ambulance. The images include many photos of Australian and New Zealand soldiers taken at ANZAC Cove, Egypt and New Guinea, as well as family photos believed to be taken in England and Brisbane.

SIDS expert leads study An infant health specialist who joined the University of the Sunshine Coast staff last month is leading a study aimed at reducing the risk of sudden unexpected death in babies. Professor Jeanine Young was previously nursing director for the Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Services based at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. The midwife and neonatal nurse with more than 20 years’ experience will remain chair of the SIDS and Kids’ National Scientif c Advisory Group. “I was attracted to USC because of the huge opportunities for locallyrelevant, world-class research as well as teaching and community engagement such as collaborations with the planned Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Skills, Academic and Research Centre,” Young says. Young’s ongoing research project is examining the potential benef ts of a portable infant sleep space called

the Pepi-pod in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. “The safe sleep enabler is a polypropylene box that is transformed into an infant bed through the addition of a fabric cover and tight-f tting mattress. “It is incorporated with safe sleeping health promotion and family commitment to share the safe sleeping message with their social networks.” The Pepi-pod program is being trialled across several sites including Brisbane, Caboolture, the TownsvilleMackay region and Woorabinda.

LIVING CHOICE RESIDENTS EMBRACE INTERͳVILLAGE CHALLENGE More than 230 residents from Living Choice Kawana Island and Twin Waters faced off in 16 different sports and ac vi es at the Kawana Island village last week in an effort to win the Living Choice Directors’ Cup for their village. While Kawana Island clinched the trophy a er two days of thrilling compe on, the real winners were the residents for “having a go and having some fun”, the aim of the inaugural InterVillage Challenge organised by residents Bob Sande and Ian Lawson and their army of helpers. The spor ng events ranged from golf, tennis, bowls

and kayaking to the more unusual horse shoe chucking and washer tossing, but crea ve ac vi es were not forgo en with a large variety of pain ngs, cra and cakes submi ed for judging. Well-known cookery author Anne e Sym of `Symply Too Good to be True’ judged more than 50 cake entries on the Thursday , while ar sts Helen Saint-Smith and Chris ne Desbiens of Buderim Cra Co age had the difficult task of judging the huge number of entries in the art and cra compe on. On Friday morning, the leisure centre, village green and boardwalk were a hive of ac vity with

Later, everyone adjourned to the leisure centre to enjoy delicious canapés and sweet treats prior to the presenta on of medallions and the coveted trophy by Living Choice director Graham

Mr Hobbs, who travelled from Adelaide, said the event had exceeded all his expecta ons and he paid tribute to Mr Sande, Mr Lawson and their many helpers for their ini a ve. “While providing ongoing care is paramount, we also promote our villages as ‘resorts for the un-re ring’ and our residents certainly proved that over the past two days,” he said.

6 IN 10 EXPOSED TO ASBESTOS

H

ome renovators are risking death by not protecting themselves from asbestos, according to an article in the latest issue of the Medical Journal of Australia. Research based on a NSW questionnaire shows around six in 10 DIY renovators have been exposed to asbestos, but fewer than 15 per cent say they regularly use protection. A high proportion of home renovators say other family members, including children, have been exposed as well. Just under a third say they use protection occasionally. Asbestos can lead to deadly malignant mesothelioma many years after exposure, and the article says Australia has one of the highest rates of the cancer in the world. Asbestos has been banned in Australia since the 1970s, but all homes built before the mid-1980s are potentially risky. The researchers, led by

Associate Professor Deborah Yates from St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, acknowledge there is a lack of clarity about how much exposure is dangerous. “Whether exposure during home renovation will result in disease in the future remains to be seen. However, this entirely preventable exposure needs to be addressed,” they write. AAP

Nerve damage in obese prohibits weight loss Researchers in Adelaide may have discovered why people who lose large amounts of weight often put it back on. Studies at the University of Adelaide have shown that the way the stomach detects and tells the brain how full we are becomes damaged in obese people and does not return to normal once they lose weight. PhD student Stephen Kentish investigated the impact of a highfat diet on the gut’s ability to signal when it is full. His results show the nerves in the stomach that send signals to the brain appear to be desensitised after long-term consumption of a high-fat diet and don’t return to normal when food intake is reduced. Study leader, Associate Professor Amanda Page, says the leptin hormone could also change the sensitivity of nerves in the stomach of obese people that signal fullness. “These two mechanisms combined mean that obese people need to eat more to feel full, which

in turn continues their cycle of obesity,” she says. Page says while the studies showed the nerves remained desensitised after weight loss, it was unclear whether that condition was permanent or just long-lasting. “We know that only about f ve per cent of people on diets are able to maintain their weight loss and that most people who’ve been on a diet put all of that weight back on within two years,” she says. “More research is needed to determine how long the effect lasts and whether there is any way, chemical or otherwise, to trick the stomach into resetting itself to normal.” AAP

ourism Australia wants to ignite the tastebuds of travellers around the world. Research has shown that for people who have never visited Australia, only 26 per cent associated it with good food and wine. But for those who have been here, it is ranked second for its food and wine experiences after France and ahead of Italy. Research across 15 of the country’s key tourism markets shows that great food, wine and local cuisine are major factors in holiday decision-making, behind world-class beauty and natural environments. The attractions of Australia’s food and wine are being incorporated into Tourism Australia’s current campaign, There’s Nothing Like Australia. “To do this, we are evolving our global campaign with the idea that Australia could be the world’s greatest restaurant – Restaurant Australia – serving up the most unique food and wine experiences in remarkable locations every day,” says Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy. He unveiled the new approach to marketing in Adelaide this week at the inaugural global wine forum, Savour Australia 2013. “There is a growing appetite (literally) globally for food and wine as part of the travel experience and

Australia has all the right ingredients to capitalise on this opportunity – with the f nest array of produce served in the most stunning locations in the world,” McEvoy says. McEvoy says the current campaign has had worldwide success and highlights “our warm and welcoming people and spectacular natural beauty”. The Restaurant Australia component would capture the “fresh thinking, open air, and the f avours that def ne our food and wine offering and can set Australia apart from the rest of the world as a tourist destination”. “Whether it’s devouring fresh shucked oysters in Tassie, quaff ng wine at a cellar door in SA, exploring Melbourne’s multicultural cuisines or sipping coffee in a laneway, feasting on sun-kissed fruit and seafood on a Queensland island, tasting Marron for the f rst time at a vineyard in WA, sampling bush tucker in outback NT, f ne dining in Sydney or following one of the many food trails or festivals in Australia – we want international visitors to know they will be spoilt for choice in Australia,” he says. James Gosper, from Wine Australia, says the strategy would help forge a strong identity about the country’s “incredibly diverse, unique and top-quality wine and food experiences”. TIME SLOWS FOR SPEEDY FLIES

L

ONDON – Flies avoid being swatted in just the same way Keanu Reeves dodges flying bullets in the movie The Matrix – by watching time pass slowly. To the insect, that rolled up newspaper moving at lightning speed might as well be inching through thick treacle. Like Reeves standing back and side-stepping slo-mo bullets, the f y has ample time to escape. And it is not alone in its ability to perceive time differently from us. New research suggests that across a wide range of species, time perception is directly related to size. Generally the smaller an animal is, and the faster its metabolic rate, the slower time passes. The evidence comes from research into the ability of animals to detect separate f ashes of fast-f ickering light. “Critical f icker fusion frequency” – the point at which the f ashes seem

to merge together, so that a light source appears constant – provides an indication of time perception. “A lot of researchers have looked at this in different animals by measuring their perception of f ickering light,” says Dr Andrew Jackson, from Trinity College Dublin. “Some can perceive quite a fast f icker and others much slower, so that a f ickering light looks like a blur. “Interestingly, there’s a large difference between big and small species. Animals smaller than us see the world in slo-mo. It seems to be almost a fact of life. Our focus was on vertebrates, but if you look at f ies, they can perceive light f ickering up to four times faster than we can.” The animals studied covered more than 30 species, including rodents, eels, lizards, chickens, pigeons, dogs, cats and leatherback turtles. PA

Retirement comes earlier than most expect CHICAGO – Many people expect to make up for skimpy nest eggs by working longer into their retirement years. But unfortunately, those plans often don’t hatch, a new survey has found. Nearly 60 per cent of recently retired Americans ended up leaving the work force sooner than planned, primarily because of poor health or because they were laid off or forced into early retirement by their employer, according to PNC Financial Services Group’s latest Perspectives on Retirement survey. “The survey clearly shows that the age at which people expect to retire is not always in their control,” said Celandra Deane-Bess, senior wealth planner at PNC. “Economic uncertainty, employer actions and unexpected health issues often force individuals to retire earlier than they planned, which puts a premium on sound f nancial habits early.” On average, workers who aren’t retired expect to stop working at

age 67, according to the survey. People who consider themselves on track with their retirement savings on average expect to retire earlier, at 65.7 years. Those who acknowledge they aren’t saving enough expect to retire at 68.2. The survey, conducted by telephone in July, also found that women have more doubt than men about their ability to afford retirement. Just over half of women polled, 51 per cent, agreed with the statement, “I’m afraid I may not be able to retire”. That compares with 48 per cent of men who responded that way. AAP

] THE WEEK THAT WAS

STEADY AS SHE GOES 2.6 per cent (month-on-month) rise in June. The loan data provided further evidence that investors continue to be the dominant driver of activity across the housing sector. Interestingly, f rst-home buyers’ share of total new loans sank to 14.7 per cent of total loan commitments. Of concern, 33 per cent of new home loans are being offered at a loan-to-value ratio of greater than 80 per cent. No doubt low interest rates mean investors are once again willing to gear up. Unbelievably, Australia’s household debt-to-income ratio is not far off the all-time pre-global f nancial crisis peak. In relation to the equity market, we recently completed the June 30 reporting season, which in many respects was similar to June 30, 2012, namely: top-line earnings (revenue) were sluggish; companies continue to cut costs and dividend payout ratios remain high (in other words, companies continue to pay out a high level of their prof ts).

Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

T

he election is over, interest rates are at all-time lows and business and consumer confidence is on the rise. Market analysts and economists argue that the economy needs a dose of conf dence before we are likely to see an improvement in business conditions and property and equity markets. So let’s look at some of the data. Sydney and Melbourne housing auction clearance rates have been very high recently. Also, the number of new housing loan commitments in Australia increased by 2.4 per cent (month-on-month) in July following on from a slightly stronger

Pleasingly there was no evidence that things were getting worse, but companies were not offering bullish forward guidance – more steady as she goes. Therefore with little earnings growth, we have managed to see the market climb to f ve-year highs. The message to investors is to remain watchful. Review your asset-class exposure and do not overpay for assets. If this bounce in conf dence does not translate into a meaningful improvement in conditions, we’ll all be disappointed. Keep an eye on global bond markets as these will offer guidance in relation to the borrowing costs for companies and countries, and the Australian unemployment rate for guidance regarding interest rates and increasing loan arrears. the hearing system (includes ear and brain). The inner ear, or cochlear, is involved for many people. Do many people suffer from tinnitus? Yes, millions around the world! Probably 18% of Australians have tinnitus at some time of their lives and approximately ‘50 million Americans have tinnitus in some form’. Countries with self-help groups include USA, UK, Germany, Canada, New Zealand and of course, Australia. Severe tinnitus is recognised as a very major aff iction, but most people have tinnitus to a milder degree. Given time, commitment and up-to-date professional help, tinnitus can reduce for many people.

to test their cortisol levels. Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, is normally present in the bloodstream at high levels in the morning and low levels at night. Chronic stress produces higher and more prolonged levels of cortisol. The adrenal glands reach a point where they can no longer cope, leading to more serious health problems and even a complete emotional breakdown. It’s important to seek help before stress becomes overwhelming, and Maroochy Day

who owns Maroochy Day and Night Pharmacy. “Women are juggling so much in today’s 24/7 lifestyles,” says Young. “There are iPhones, emails, looking after kids and work commitments. One of the most important factors I see contributing to stress is that people don’t know how to say no. “Many people who come into the pharmacy are stressed, but women in particular come in with symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, high blood pressure and hormonal imbalances.” One of the f rst things Young and his team do when dealing with a stressed client is

Tinnitus is a physical condition, experienced as noises or ringing in the ears or head when no such external physical noise is present. Tinnitus is usually caused by a fault in the hearing system; it is a symptom, not a disease in itself.

Is tinnitus understood? Worldwide research continues but the actual mechanisms, or processes of tinnitus are not yet fully understood. We do know that tinnitus is real, not imagined, and that it is a symptom of a malfunction, usually somewhere in

esearch from the Australian Institute of Family Studies shows women are feeling more pushed for time than men, putting more hours into child care and household tasks while juggling work commitments. No wonder stress is such a common complaint among women. Carving out a little piece of time just for herself each day is essential for women to keep their stress levels in check, according to pharmacist Stephen Young,

RINGING IN THE EARS?

What causes tinnitus? Many causes - almost everything that can go wrong with our ears can produce tinnitus as a symptom! Perhaps as simple as wax against the eardrum, or as serious as a tumour on the hearing nerve. Otosclerosis (f xation of the tiny stirrup bone in the middle ear) can produce tinnitus; so can Meniere’s disease. A major cause of tinnitus is EXPOSURE TO EXCESSIVE NOISE, e.g. chain saws, machinery, rock concerts. Noise destroys!

7 Biggest Mistakes you could be making that could cause Permanent Depression, Anxiety or ADHD

YOGA FOR WATER BABIES

I

f you think holding a tricky pose on a yoga mat is hard, try doing it on water. Stand-up paddleboard yoga (SUP yoga) is a fun exercise craze that involves practising yoga poses while balancing on a paddleboard, which activates and strengthens muscles you didn’t even know you had. Doing yoga on a surface that’s constantly in motion requires you to use your core muscles and strengthens muscles that aren’t usually engaged in a standard yoga class. SUP yoga requires you to focus intensely so as not to fall off and your muscles are not only working while holding the poses, but while you’re transitioning between poses. Keeping your eye on a point on the horizon can help you balance, but if you fall off, the worst that happens is you get wet and have a laugh.

Grab a board and try SUP yoga on your own, or sign up to a class. Standup Paddle Surfing in Noosa says it has pioneered the sport of SUP in Australia in 2002 and since then has implemented a range of classes, including SUP yoga. For more information visit standuppaddlesurf.com.au.

Are you not as happy as you used to be? Is stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, or ADHD overwhelming you? Are anti-depressants not working for you? Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow? We had an incredible response from all who were logged on for the webinar we ran about one of my favourite topics – Solving the puzzle that creates Anxiety Depression & ADHD. When you put it all together, it all makes sense. There are 7 key underlying triggers which can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them.

The 7 key common triggers that affect your brain, cause a compounding effect that your brain cannot deal with, which leads to long term, and then permanent brainwave pattern changes, affecting your personality, mood, and ability to think and cope, permanently! Fortunately it can be quite easy to address. Patients who have suffered depression for four decades, have reported to have improved out of sight after one month and other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment, including sufferers of Major Depressive Disorder, and children with ADHD, who have then been able to reduce their medication in less than 7 weeks, and these results are permanent and medication free! Seizing every moment RECORDING EVERY MOMENT OF YOUR LIFE ON CAMERA COULD BE A FUN FAD OR A SERIOUS BREACH OF PRIVACY.

W

hen Martin Kaellstroem was a young adult, he lost both his parents to cancer. It spurred him on to seize the day, as a person and an entrepreneur. The result? A lens with no off button that captures every moment of your life. The 38-year-old co-founder of Swedish company Memoto is a man in a hurry as he promotes his ‘lifelogging’ camera, which is worn with a clip on the shirt or on a string around the neck, and takes a picture once every 30 seconds. “When you lose your parents, you realise that you don’t live forever,” Kaellstroem (pictured) says. Some may see parallels with George Orwell’s 1984, The Truman Show or other dystopias. But the team behind the Memoto camera insists it doesn’t breach any privacy. Rather, they see it as a way to collect memories. “Traditionally, people only brought their camera to special events when everyone was dressed up, smiling into the camera,” Kaellstroem says. “But you don’t know in advance which moments will be important in the future. Perhaps you meet your future wife or witness an accident or a crime, pictures you might want to return to.” Lifelogging, a technique for digitally gathering daily moments,

is a growing phenomenon, gaining popularity with mobile applications such as Saga, which creates info graphics summarising your life through your smartphone data, and health trackers like Runkeeper. Following the success of calling software Skype, music streaming service Spotify and video game developer Dice – all technologies with a heavy Swedish component – the next big thing could be a device logging your life in pictures. The Memoto camera, which resembles an iPod mini, collects a stream of pictures, automatically sorted according to the GPS location, time and light. The ‘memory timeline’ can be shared on social media such as Facebook or Twitter. It is a tool for a new tech-savvy world without the patience to keep a diary, according to co-founder Oskar Kalmaru. “I’ve failed several times when trying to write a blog or travelogue,” Kalmaru says. “Older relatives managed to keep a diary over 20 years, but it is hard with the routine.” But classmates, employees and neighbours may not want to be caught on f lm, much less people in witness protection programs or other sensitive areas of life. Lifelogging does raise some privacy questions, says Steven Savage, a researcher at the Swedish Defence Research Agency, noting

The lifelogging cameras are just the tip movement of the iceberg into the ‘quantif ed self’ that the private sphere is relative: what is not offensive to one person might be to another. “It depends where the photos end up,” Savage says. “Today, it is diff cult to search pictures, but new technology is being developed all the time. Once those pictures become searchable, more questions will arise. You’ll lose control over the situation.” Jan Svaerdhagen, who is currently writing a book about lifelogging, agrees. “The f rst question one should raise is ‘what function is f lled by taking a photo every 30 seconds?’ Who buys the product and for what purpose? Are we entering the next stage of social media where we not only log, but also share our lives 24/7 in a kind of big brother lite version?” says Svaerdhagen. Kaellstroem says he and his team thought a great deal about privacy while designing the camera, bearing

in mind that many might be uncomfortable with being confronted with a spying eye. “It has to be clear that it is a camera, but yet with a friendly design that makes people comfortable and not distracted,” he says. Soon, 4000 of these cameras will reach their users. In the future they might develop accessories such as a waterproof case, a wideangle lens and a Wi-Fi dock. In the meantime, the blueprint is available online for creative users to personalise their camera. “The lifelogging cameras are just the tip of the iceberg in the ‘quantif ed self’ movement,” says Lisa Ehlin, an expert in digital culture at Stockholm University. “I’m sure we will walk around with some cool new gadgets in the future, like those mouth chips or body tattoos tracking your health and what you eat. But mainly, it’s all about social life and friends.” AAP

Q. What’s does Beerwah Hotel bring to the Coast that no other venue does? A. I believe that Beerwah Hotel not only does upper-market pub food really well, but we also incorporate a lot of amazing food that you wouldn’t normally see in a pub. MAKE/MODEL VOLVO V40 T4 DETAILS Five-door, five-seat compact hatchback with five-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine; six-speed automatic transmission. TECH STUFF Two-litre, five-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine produces 132kW, 300Nm; six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission with sports mode; front wheel drive. FEATURES Five-star safety rating, dynamic stability and traction control; City Safety frontal collision avoidance system; pedestrian airbag; blind spot indicator, lane departure warning and mitigation system; automatic parking assistant, rear view camera, satellite navigation; reversing cross-traffic alert, road sign recognition system; leather trim, climate control air-conditioning, electric windows and mirrors.

VOLVO TAKES TECHNOLOGY TO NEW LEVELS WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

I

t’s a pity the name Smart Car is already taken, because it would suit Volvo’s new V40 hatchback to a T. The Swedish brand has lifted the gadget bar to a whole new level with its newest model, including a range of functions that you don’t even need to be in the car to use. The V40 not only parks itself (with its parking pilot system), but it also steers itself (if you happen to drift

across the centre line), warms itself up (on cold mornings), stops itself (if you’re in danger of a collision), turns itself off (when you’re sitting in traffic to avoid wasting fuel) and even reads the road signs for you. It will check behind so you don’t reverse into oncoming traffic (cross traffic alert), jolt you if you’re drifting out of your lane (lane departure warning) or if there’s a car in your blind

spot (blind spot indicator), will alert you if you’re becoming drowsy and even dip your headlights when you forget. It will keep a safe distance from the car ahead when you’re in cruise control, brake to avoid a collision in city traffic and even keep an eye out for pedestrians wandering into your path. With all that clever technology, it’s a wonder you need a driver at all. But just so you don’t feel left out,

THIRST 7.6L/100km (official combined figure). PERFORMANCE 0-100km/h in 8.6 seconds. VERDICT More gadgets than Dick Smith’s. BOTTOM LINE $44,990 as tested (plus onroad costs).

[ the nice Volvo people have invented a new driver-focused system called Sensus – a new style of fully graphic instrument cluster, which can be personalised to the driver, depending on your mood. Volvo promises that soon, V40 owners will be able to download a phone app which, among other things, will help you locate your car in the car park (including a digital compass to point you in the right direction); remotely lock or unlock the doors and windows; start the heater remotely on chilly days; check remotely how much fuel you have remaining as well as your average consumption, average speed and odometer reading and check on the car’s ‘health’, including brake f uid levels, coolant levels and oil pressure. The mobile app will also include a driving journal to detail your trips over the previous 40 days and, if someone tries to steal your Volvo, the remote system will send you an alert. The V40 pushes the brand in a new direction with a hatchback instead of the previous V40 (wagon) and S40 (sedan) models.

The Volvo will be offered with a variety of engine options – from frugal diesels to high-performance petrol engines – and with prices ranging from early $30s to well beyond $50,000 for the f agship T5 R-Design. Mind you, knowing exactly what you’re driving can be a bit tricky with Volvo’s rather strange new naming conventions. For instance, there’s the T5 which, as you might expect, is a turbocharged, 2.5-litre f ve-cylinder. Not so logical is the T4 (still f ve cylinders and turbo-charged, but two litres instead of 2.5); while the diesel variants are even trickier – the D4 is a two-litre, f ve-cylinder oil-burner while the entry-level D2 is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel. We drove the T4 Luxury, sitting about mid-range in the V40 line-up with a price tag of $45,990 plus on-road costs. The range starts at a much more affordable $34,990 for the entry-level D2 Kinetic model (with a thrifty turbo-diesel engine and six-speed manual transmission). <from previous page six-speed automatic is standard on other models. There’s no question the V40 represents solid value for money. The list of technology and features is long and impressive and the Volvo, as we’ve come to expect, exhibits high levels of f nish and quality. As with most European brands, the options list can add substantially to the purchase price. Adding to the value equation, Volvo will include free scheduled servicing for three years or 60,000 kilometres, giving it a handy edge over most Euro rivals. But it’s the technology that is likely to be the car’s biggest selling point. Central to that is the new Sensus infotainment system. Using a TFT (thin f lm transistor) display, it allows the instrument panel to be reconf gured by the driver to display information most relevant to the situation, as well as a choice of themes. There’s a calming Elegance mode, green-tinted Eco mode or Performance mode. Sensus also includes a console-

mounted touch-screen giving access to vehicle settings including City Safety (collision avoidance system), Active Cruise Control, driver alerts as well as settings for lighting, door mirrors, central locking and audio. Technology aside, the V40 is a bit of a mixed bag. We found the ride a bit harsh in our test machine, although this can be mitigated to a large degree by the adjustable suspension system allowing you to choose between three modes. I’d suggest that if you’re choosing the f rmest of those three settings, you should be prepared for a car that crashes over relatively minor road imperfections and feeds those bumps back through the cabin in a surprisingly harsh way. Style-wise, I was in two minds about the V40. Whereas its predecessor was a crisply styled, athletic-looking thing, the new V40

looks a little awkward. That’s very much a personal thing though. On the plus side, the cabin feels amply roomy, with decent cargo space. Our test vehicle was f tted with a full-length f xed panoramic sunroof, which helps add an airy, spacious feel

Is it a car or a camel? The award-winning Volkswagen Amarok has finished one of Australia’s toughest driving challenges – a point-to-point drive across the Simpson Desert on one tank of fuel. A group of Australian motoring journalists travelled from Mount Dare in South Australia to Birdsville in Queensland to test the strength, durability and eff ciency of the Amarok. The trip crossed 1100 dunes in temperatures of more than 40 degrees and was 505 kilometres between fuel stops. It is one of Australia’s most challenging drives. Volkswagen director of Commercial Vehicles Philip Clark says the vehicles were so eff cient they could have kept going past Birdsville. “The Simpson Desert can make or break a vehicle and the Amarok has shown it is wellequipped to handle these conditions,” Clark says.

to the cabin and the cargo space features a two-level luggage f oor. And, of course, being a Volvo it comes with a f ve-star safety rating, ref ecting Volvo’s corporate plan that, by 2020, nobody should die or be seriously injured in one of their vehicles. Smart thinking, indeed.

Watch out A smartwatch has been unveiled which monitors the performance of not just the car but its driver as well. Nissan’s Nismo Concept Watch can measure the eff ciency of a vehicle, including average speeds and fuel consumption, as well as monitoring a user’s heart rate, temperature and other biometric data. The gadget, being showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show, is the car manufacturer’s f rst step into wearable technology. Nissan Europe marketing communications general manager Gareth Dunsmore says, “Wearable technology is fast becoming the next big thing.”

Motoring.com.au has hinted that Opel’s discontinued Astra, Insignia and Corsa models could live on in Holden showrooms. Having pulled out of Australia after less than a year of retailing under its own name, Opel could sell selected models, badged as Holdens, in Australia. Sources say Opel’s withdrawal from Australia was driven by the realisation that a return on investment in the highly competitive and mature market will take many years to achieve – a decision Holden heads had already f gured, dropping the German vehicles more than f ve years ago.

The ‘best before’ date for property sales PLANNING TO LET YOUR HOUSE SIT ON THE MARKET FOR A WHILE, JUST TO TEST THE WATERS? GORDON MACDONALD FROM JASON ANDREW GROUP TELLS US WHY THAT’S NOT A WINNING STRATEGY.

O

n most food items, the ‘best before’ date is just that – the date before which the food will taste best. Of course, you can usually still eat whatever it is for some time after the nominated date, and it will probably still taste OK. It just won’t be at its prime. A new report has now formally conf rmed something that’s long been known anecdotally – that property also has a ‘best before’ date. The clock starts ticking the f rst day a home is listed for sale and expires around 30 days later. Property researcher RP Data recently released the results of a study conducted of sales results over the past f ve years. The study showed that properties sold within 30 days of listing consistently recorded the lowest level of vendor discounting, while properties sold after 120 days consistently recorded the highest level of discounting. The general rule of thumb for any marketing campaign is that the highest inspection numbers will be recorded in the f rst week, generally halving in the second and again in the third week, with minimal new inspections by the fourth week.

This is the main reason why the average auction campaign runs over four weeks. Four weeks is the ideal length for any type of campaign – it’s long enough for every possible buyer in the marketplace to have the opportunity to inspect, but not too long that buyers become disinterested. For sellers who are working with a good agent, the four-week mark is the point at which the highest possible current market value for their property is f nally revealed. It’s the ideal point for an educated selling decision to be made – will we sell, or is the price too low? At this juncture, some vendors will sell, and some will withdraw their property from the market entirely, at least for now. But four weeks is also the point at which a common mistake is made – deciding not to sell in the hopes that a better offer will come along later. As the report from RP Data shows, this is a highly unlikely outcome. Far more likely is that the offers will get progressively lower as time goes by. The only way to avoid this decline from the peak is to radically alter something about the campaign, like changing the marketing method from private treaty to auction. By making radical change, it may be possible to restart the clock, thereby creating a new ‘best before’ date.

Next FREE Introduction to Real Estate session: 30 OCTOBER

It was a big weekend for auctions in Melbourne and Sydney, with the annual pre-AFL grand final auction weekend delivering big results for buyers and sellers. In Victoria, there were 872 reported auctions, up from 471 the previous week (and 600 for the same week last year). Of those, 510 sold at auction and 120 sold prior, for a clearance rate of 76 per cent. Sydney had fewer reported auctions – only 271 – but a higher clearance rate, at 84 per cent. Of the 146 properties which sold under the hammer, the highest reported sale price was $2,915,000 for a home in Randwick, in the city’s south-east. The best bargain of the weekend was in Melbourne, where a Frankston cheapie sold for $305,500. SOURCE: STATISTICS FROM PROPERTYDATA.COM.AU

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Think before you speak on Saturday, otherwise you could say the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time. Sunday is suitable for creative projects and group activities.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Mars gives you a confidence boost as you initiate a project, speak in front of a group or prepare for a new job. Take your time, as you carefully accomplish tasks.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 You’re fired up to tackle tasks on Saturday, as the Aries moon boosts your energy and enthusiasm. Sunday suits preparing yourself for the busy week ahead, at home or at work.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Some of your best work this weekend will be behind the scenes. Others may not notice or appreciate what you’re doing, but your efforts will be rewarded further down the track.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Librans are often terrified of making mistakes. Your motto for the moment is from birthday great Sophia Loren: “It’s better to explore life and make mistakes than to play it safe.”

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 It’s a wonderful weekend to consolidate plans, and convey your ideas with great power and passion. You’re keen to work long and hard, as you focus on the tasks at hand.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Sagittarians can be very short-sighted but, when it comes to money matters, ensure you have a long-term view. Smart saving now will lead to a larger nest egg in the future.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Concentration is high and your attention to detail is even better than usual. All types of research and investigation are favoured, as you solve a mystery or uncover a secret.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Don’t take shortcuts at work. Success will come if you are patient and do all the homework or research that is required. Look for facts that are hidden beneath the surface.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Discipline and discretion are needed this weekend, to stop you from blurting out information that should be kept confidential. Focus on writing down your goals for the future.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Here is a sneak peak of why I am heading to Sumatra with World Surfaris. This is called Treasure Island and is a smoking right-hander that just keeps on giving! It has a couple of nice barrel sections with walls to do some lovely stuff on. I would say ‘sick’ but I am too old to do that. Since the earthquake it has halved in its length of ride and now only goes for the length of Moffat Headland. A long paddle back out! Getting caught on the inside, however, is not fun and is quite shallow and sharp. Slap! Back to reality – not much on offer this weekend although the winds will be light on Sunday. Take the board with you for a swim and if you jag a nice wave it’s a bonus. I will try to send a report from Sumatra to let you know how the gumby team is doing. We will have 21 shortboards, a couple of mals and a couple of stand-ups, oh, and 20 cartons of Bintang!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Whiting and f athead are on the drift from Twin Waters weir to the Maroochy Bar using yabbies with the low tide concentrating f sh in the gutters. Work the areas just pumped for bait. Catch jew on live bait as the tide slows around bridge pylons, with plastics also returning f sh in the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers. SURF: There is not a lot of action along the beaches at present, but the rising night tides are still producing some tailor, bream and some unstoppables, using mullet f llet and pillies with Mudjimba and Pincushion best. Try Maroochy Beach for whiting and dart early morning. OFFSHORE: There are some great reef f sh at present with quality mixed reef f sh being taken from the Barwon Banks to Murphy’s Reef, but nothing much happening from 10am to 3pm. School mackerel are off Point Cartwright. FRESHWATER: Impoundments are f ring at present with the rising barometer best. Deep divers and live shrimps are working well in Somerset, BjelkePetersen and Boondooma, but our local creeks are also f ring for bass on shallow divers and ‘poppers’ as they move down to breed.
