he other day I was driving down Pacific Terrace at Alex and when I came to the traffic lights I realised I had forgotten to take in the view. It’s not like me at all. I love that moment when you are driving along the road and catch a glimpse of the ocean – especially when you are heading towards it to go for a refreshing dip. I’ve been lucky enough to live on the Coast on and off since high school, but there are times when I catch sight of that blue water – on the way home, heading to an appointment or after school drop-off – and suddenly I am 12 again, when the Sunshine Coast was our holiday spot and not our home, and my time in the ocean was limited to those precious few weeks a year. This week Jarna Baudinette is playing tourist, and she discovers that there has
never been a better time than right now to be visiting our region. Our beaches and mountains are enhanced by some fantastic events that make living and visiting here so special. t’s easy to forget how lucky we are to live on the Sunshine Coast. We’re blessed with pristine beaches, an ideal climate and lovely hinterland areas, and we don’t need to worry about traffic or crowds. However, because we experience the Coast’s natural beauty every day we quickly grow accustomed to it. If you need a reminder of just how attractive our region is, consider that more than three million people visited the Sunshine Coast in 2012 alone – that’s more than 10 times the Coast’s population, and a two per cent increase on the previous year. Tourism has long been a pillar of the Sunshine Coast economy, and after a tough few years, local operators are optimistic we are attracting our share of visitors once more. Simon Ambrose is CEO of Sunshine Coast Destination Limited (SCDL) and says early reports suggest
this September school holiday period will be a strong one for the Coast. “Encouragingly, our tourism operators are reporting strong bookings across all areas of the Coast for the September school holidays,” he says. “We also know that the success of holidays, particularly from our drive market, is determined by good weather and the forecast is looking terrif c over the holiday period.” In the lead-up to the holidays, SCDL has launched a marketing campaign called Make the Most of the Moment, which has promoted the Coast to key markets in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne using television commercials and digital activity. “We have also promoted an eCoupon booklet, adding value for visitors, and teamed up with Caloundra Music Festival offering packages to encourage visitors to not just come for a day but stay

and play,” Ambrose says. Bill Darby is tourism and events chair for the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, and says over the past few years, events like the music festival have been crucial drivers of tourism growth across the Coast. He
says. “People are a lot more discerning, and they need to have a specif c purpose to travel. “Because all destinations that rely heavily on tourism are sharing this intel, the competition to attract visitors is becoming greater.”

says local tourism operators have come to realise people are now looking for more from a holiday destination than in earlier years. “We’ve identif ed a strong trend in that destination choice is now being made on events and activities, rather than historical choices,” Darby
However, rather than baulking at the challenge, Darby says it presents an opportunity for the Coast to reposition itself within the broader tourist market. “As a region, I think during the ’80s and ’90s we became very complacent,” he says. “We were reliant M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

on our weather – for nearly two decades the Sunshine Coast was the most popular destination for Queenslanders to go on holiday, so that complacency really set in.” A decline in travel post-GFC, cheaper airfares to neighbouring Asian countries and a few years of unseasonably bad weather combined to provide a wake-up call that “if we don’t have great weather we haven’t got much,” Darby says. “Our dependence on that was a real weakness.” Events like the music festival, Tough Mudder and the Ironman 70.3 now bring people to the Coast and provide an incentive for them to enjoy a holiday afterwards. Darby says while these sporting and cultural events go a long way toward topping up our tourist numbers, the success of the region will also depend on how well we brand ourselves in the future – not just to domestic and drive markets, but also internationally. “I also think we’ve become a lot more creative in how we promote ourselves,” he says. “Noosa, to their full credit, took a lead role in promoting their brand to inbound tourism [in previous decades]. “But now, necessity being the mother of invention, there’s a really strong push for the rest of the Coast to start doing that.” He says we also need to focus on the things we do well – connecting visitors to the natural environment, providing a safe and relaxing environment for families and giving tourists “that authentic beach experience”. “All of the research says that our strongest segment is the connectors – people who are looking to connect either with each other or with the environment,” Darby says. “The Sunshine Coast is good at delivering that – we’ve got a diversity of different beaches and hinterland areas. Our beaches and hinterland and outdoor environments are our greatest strengths. “The Gold Coast is more activity based, it’s go, go, go … [but] people are not necessarily coming here to unload their wallets. “It’s a destination where they can connect.”

The launch of the Caloundra Fringe Festival this afternoon marks the start of an 11-day celebration of art, music, culture, food and entertainment. The festival will be off cially opened at the Twilight Markets on Bulcock Beach, with a program jam-packed with entertainment for the whole family. The familyfriendly theme is central to more than 45 events and activities being staged throughout Caloundra. The Fringe Festival is now in its second year and is being held in the lead-up to, and during, the Caloundra Music Festival. Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and Industry executive off cer Leanne Layf eld says there are
some exciting new events planned this year, such as the Avant-garde N Party, Nun’s Ascension Pool Parties and the Fusion Food Festival. “The Fringe is a great collaboration of event organisers working under one umbrella to deliver a program of music, arts, culture, comedy and culinary delight,” Layf eld says. “The aim is to wow visitors here for the school holidays and encourage locals to have a staycation and holiday at home.” Other events being held include Festuri multicultural festival; an Open Mic Night at Forty Five 51; Fringe Film Festival; a busking festival; Happy Valley Aqua Fun and Kids Club at the Caloundra Regional Gallery. Like most domestic tourist destinations, the Sunshine Coast has three main types of visitors – holidaymakers, business people and those who are visiting friends and relatives. Almost a third of our visitors in 2012 came to the Coast to reconnect with friends or loved ones. Stuart and Gina Mills recently visited the Coast from south-west Victoria with their seven-year-old daughter, Lilly. They come to Queensland at least once a year and split their time between the Gold Coast, where they stay with relatives, and visiting family friends in Caloundra. As for most visitors, the warm weather is a drawcard. Stuart, who lived in Mooloolaba for a few years in his 20s, says what he enjoys most about the Sunshine Coast is the chance to relax. “We like going up to Noosa, and the Mooloolaba area is nice – it’s a little bit of a different pace than if you go to the Gold Coast,” he says. “We like going to different cafes
where you can sit at the waterfront and look out. And we always like Montville.” The Mills family say they try to spend as much of their visit outdoors as they can, including trips to the beach, walking or cycling along the coastal paths and visiting surf clubs. However, if the weather isn’t ideal, they have a unique back-up plan – Stuart is a builder and designer by trade, so they can
happily pass a cloudy day visiting the Coast’s prize homes, admiring the open coastal architecture. “We like to imagine ourselves living in a prize home one day,” Mills says. A small number of tourists come for work, like Victorian photographer Liam Hammersley, who recently shot a wedding in Noosa. Afterwards, he and his partner Sheree Bennett spent a few extra days on the Coast.
“I was hired to shoot a destination wedding there by a couple I know, so I jumped at the chance to get away from the cold,” he says. While Bennett had passed through the Coast a few years ago, Hammersley had never visited before; they f ew into the Sunshine Coast airport and stayed at a self-contained apartment, and were pleasantly surprised by how hasslefree their stay was. “When I was asked to shoot the wedding I did my research on Noosa and it looked great, so I knew it would be nice there,” he says. “But I didn’t expect how nice everyone was. Everyone we met was very welcoming and so laid-back. No one was rushing and nothing was a problem for them.” He says he also took advantage of the Coast’s natural beauty to expand his portfolio. “I got some nice shots from around the National Park [and] went out a few times for sunrise, and most sunsets,” he says. “I will def nitely go back in a few years. Really beautiful area.”

BIG WIN FOR KIME University of the Sunshine Coast student Stephen Kime has been awarded the inaugural $10,000 Unitywater Scholarship in Engineering. Kime, a third-year civil engineering student, is majoring in environment and water. The scholarship will provide Kime with $5000 for each of his third and fourth years of study, valuable work experience during the summer holidays and an invitation to join Unitywater’s graduate program when he f nishes his studies at the end of 2014. “I really appreciate this f nancial support and the recognition that Unitywater has given me, and backing it up with a career opportunity,” Kime says. The Mountain Creek resident is a volunteer surf lifesaver, a USC schools ambassador and the son of swim coach Barry Kime. “I’m really looking forward to the graduate program, which involves a six-monthly rotation through a number of roles, which I expect will include things like being part of a project team and working out in the f eld.” Kime was joined by 10 other students who received industry awards.
Mary Valley community welcomes new Pickering Bridge The new $4 million Pickering Bridge at Moy Pocket is starting to take shape, with a 30-metre crane arriving on site last week to position the roadway decking. Member for Gympie David Gibson, Sunshine Coast councillor Greg Rogerson and Gympie Councillor Julie Walker agreed the new bridge was welcome by the community. Gibson says the project will improve safety and f ood resilience and aid delivery of supplies for the Bruce Highway upgrades. The new bridge, near Kenilworth, will span the Mary River, making a safer crossing. It will reduce the number of trucks using Mary Valley Road and connect the Sunshine Coast and Gympie.
Police blog to boost communication with the public Sunshine Coast police have entered the blogosphere with last week’s launch of myPolice Sunshine Coast. Police minister Jack Dempsey says the blog will boost interaction between Sunshine Coast police and the public by giving off cers another method of keeping the community informed. “The blog has a range of features to keep the community up to date at all times,” Dempsey says. “Through the blog, police off cers will be able to share crime prevention tips, information on
personal safety, keeping property secure and show comf t images or stills from CCTV to a wider audience. Dempsey says myPolice Sunshine Coast joined a number of blogs released across the state including Maryborough, South Brisbane, Bundaberg and Gladstone. ALL WELCOME AT OPEN DAY Surf life saving clubs across the Coast will open their doors this Sunday for Surf Life Saving’s annual Surf Club Open Day. The open day is an opportunity for residents to visit their local surf club, meet the members and get a feel for the volunteer opportunities available, from patrolling the beach to helping with junior activities, communications, club administration and more. Caitlin Knight has been a member of Dicky Beach SLSC for 15 years and is the club’s Jupiters Summer Surf Girl entrant for 2013-14. She says on Sunday, Dicky Beach will offer club tours and a range of activities for locals interested in becoming members. “This year there’s Nippers on, and we’ll have a barbecue and there’ll also be lots of activities and scenarios, showcasing the club and what we do,” Knight says. “We’re trying to promote life

saving in the community and the different ways members can be involved.” Aside from lifesavers on the beach and in the water, there will be demonstrations from the club’s IRB and surf boat teams, and fun family activities and games. Clubs across the region will also be showcasing their sense of community. Knight is 24 and says being a surf lifesaver has provided her with leadership and development opportunities far beyond the beach. “I’ve been with the club for 15 years and I’ve been a patrol captain for eight years – it’s a program that will open up so many different doors,” she says. “For me, the surf club is literally my family. xperts once at the helm of the now defunct Climate Commission have vowed to continue their work and will launch an independent body after being dumped by the Federal Government. The Australian Climate Council will retain the same six specialists, who will volunteer their time to interpret breaking climate science from around the globe. Professor Will Steffen says one of the f rst orders of business for the not-for-prof t council will be assessing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) f fth assessment report, due for release today. “We will do the very best we can to pull out the main points to this report and make it understandable to the Australian public,” Steffen says, adding that he and colleagues hope to produce a summary document within days of the release. “Since the axe fell I’ve gotten lots of emails from colleagues and
Tim Flannery the general public … people airing their displeasure [at the commission being scrapped] and we were just really encouraged by the groundswell of support to keep going,” Steffen says. ARIS – France’s first ‘cat cafe’ has opened in Paris with an in-house troupe of nine rescue cats ready and waiting to be made a fuss of by cat-loving customers. Already popular in Tokyo where there are dozens, cat cafes allow customers who cannot have a pet at home to enjoy a cup of something hot with a purring cat perched on their knees. Margaux Gandelon, the woman behind the new Cafe des Chats in Paris’s trendy Marais district, says the cats were carefully selected for their social skills and stresses that hygiene and their welfare are her top priorities. “My cats are free all day and all night,” she says. Cindy Engel from Strasbourg visited the cafe ahead of its opening for a preview. The 31-year-old welcomed the concept, saying it encouraged her to interact with other people rather than electronic devices.

DNA DATABASES ARE A REVOLUTION IN CRIME FIGHTING, BUT IS BIG BROTHER OUT OF CONTROL?
ou can ditch your computer and leave your mobile at home, but you can’t escape your DNA. It belongs uniquely to you – and, increasingly, to the authorities. Countries around the world are collecting genetic material from millions of citizens in the name of f ghting crime and terrorism, and – according to critics – heading into uncharted ethical terrain. Leaders include the US, where the Supreme Court recently backed the collection of DNA swabs from suspects on arrest, and Britain, where police held samples of almost seven million people, more than 10 per cent of the population, until a courtordered about-face forced the incineration of a chunk of the database. The expanding trove of DNA in off cial hands has alarmed privacy campaigners, and some scientists. Recent leaks about US surveillance programs by former National Security Agency systems analyst Edward Snowden have made people realise their online information and electronic communications may not be as secure as they thought. Could the same be true of the information we hold in our genes? DNA samples that can help solve robberies and murders could also, in theory, be used to track down our relatives, scan us for susceptibility to disease, or monitor our movements. Earlier this year Yaniv Erlich, who runs a lab at MIT’s Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in the US, published a paper in the journal Science describing how he was able to identify individuals, and their families, from anonymous DNA data in a research project. All it took was a computer
algorithm, a genetic genealogy website and searches of publicly available internet records. “It was a very weird feeling – a ‘wow’ feeling,” Erlich says. “I had to take a walk outside just to think about this process.” Erlich says DNA databases have enormous positive power, both for f ghting crime and in scientif c research. But, he adds, “our work shows there are privacy limitations”. Ethical qualms have done little to stop the growth of genetic databases around the world. The international police agency Interpol listed 54 nations with national police DNA databases in 2009, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany and China. Brazil and India have since announced plans to join the club, and the United Arab Emirates intends to build the world’s f rst database of an entire national population. The biggest database is in the US – the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS, which holds information on more than 11 million people suspected of or convicted of crimes. It is set to grow following a May court ruling that upheld the right of police forces to take DNA swabs without a warrant from people who are arrested, not just those who are convicted. (Policies on DNA collection vary by state, but more than half of the states and the US federal government take DNA swabs after arrests.) The court’s justices were divided about implications for individuals’ rights. Justice Anthony Kennedy, for the f ve-judge majority, called the taking of DNA a legitimate and reasonable police booking procedure akin to f ngerprinting. But

dissenting Justice Antonin Scalia argued that it marked a major change in police powers. “Because of today’s decision, your DNA can be taken and entered into a national database if you are ever arrested, rightly or wrongly, and for whatever reason,” Scalia says. A similar note of caution has been struck by Alec Jeffreys, the British geneticist whose 1984 discovery of DNA f ngerprinting revolutionised criminal investigations. He has warned that “mission creep” could mean authorities use DNA to accumulate information on people’s racial origins, medical history and psychological prof le. Police forces have already tracked down criminals through the DNA of their innocent relatives. Charles Tumosa, a clinical assistant professor in forensic studies at the University of Baltimore in the US, is wary of the potential for genetic surveillance. He says relatives of suspects could be identif ed through DNA and leaned on for information about their family members. And yet familial DNA searches have helped solve terrible crimes. In Britain, a sex attacker known as the ‘shoe rapist’ was caught after 20 years through DNA from his sister, who was in the database because of a drunk-driving arrest. In Kansas in 2005, police identif ed Dennis Rader as a serial killer known as ‘BTK’ through his daughter’s DNA obtained, without her knowledge, from a pap smear in her medical records. “There’s got to be a debate,” says Tumosa. “Nobody has talked this out. At what point do you say, enough is enough? Do we want to have a society where f ve per cent of the crime is unsolved, or do
we want to have a society where 100 per cent of the crime is solved [but privacy is compromised]. What’s the trade-off?” Both supporters and critics of DNA databases point to Britain, where until recently, police could take the DNA of anyone 10 years or older who had been arrested for even the most minor offence, and keep it forever, even if the suspect was later acquitted or released without charge. Police say the database has helped solve thousands of crimes, including murders and rapes. On the other hand, there are hundreds of thousands of innocent people, including children, who feel

Under a law passed last year known as the Protection of Freedoms Act, the government is destroying the DNA prof les – strings of numbers derived from DNA samples that are used to identify individuals – of a million people who were arrested for minor offences but not convicted. People acquitted of serious crimes have their DNA prof les kept for up to f ve years. Britain also has incinerated more than six million physical DNA samples – mostly saliva swabs – taken from suspects. Samples, which could previously be kept indef nitely, must now be destroyed after six months. However, some aspects of the country’s genetic
Do we want to have a society where f ve per cent of the crime is unsolved, or do we want to have a society where 100 per cent of the crime is solved but privacy is compromised? tainted by inclusion on a database of criminal suspects – a status some legal experts say undermines the presumption of innocence. “A lot of British people were very shocked to f nd themselves or their children ending up on the database for minor alleged offences such as throwing a snowball at a car,” says Helen Wallace, director of the GeneWatch, which campaigns for restrictions on collection of DNA and other personal information. After a long legal battle, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in 2008 that Britain’s “blanket and indiscriminate” storage of DNA violated the right to a private life. Britain was forced to trim its
monitoring remain murky. Britain’s DNA ethics watchdog has expressed concerns about a secret counter-terrorism database, which, according to the Metropolitan Police Authority, contains “DNA obtained through searches, crime scenes and arrests in relation to counter-terrorism” – including samples from people stopped and questioned at ports and borders, even if they are not arrested. The Home Off ce, which oversees police and the DNA database, says there is a “robust regulatory framework” for the counter-terrorism database. But it will not disclose how large it is, who has access to it or whether the information is shared with other countries. AP

At a national level, reduced tax receipts combined with increased and perhaps wasteful spending will mean we will continue to see politicians attack the savings of wealthier Australian retirees. The author of the Symply Too Good To Be True cookbook series has urged Australians to take a sensible approach to dieting and not to be tempted by the promise of quick-f x gimmicks. “Spring is that time of the year when we shed our baggy clothes and discover a multitude of sins hidden during our winter hibernation,” Sym says. “Our exercise regime is often put on hold during the colder months and we tend to eat more comfort foods. Then along comes spring and we don’t like the winter image in the mirror; however, that is no excuse to resort to fad dieting. “Every year there is a new weight-loss gimmick, from three-day juice-only cleanses to paleo diets, with the latest fad a new range of detox teas. Any product or diet which promises a new body almost overnight is unrealistic and dangerous.” Sym, who has built a low-fat cookbook empire based on her own personal weight loss experience, knows there is no single food or diet that can help you trim down and keep the weight off for life. “You need to change the way you think about food, how you eat and increase your physical activity if you want to have a healthy body. “Be realistic about your weight loss. Don’t aim to be skinny if that is not your genetic make-up. Sensible
dieting is about healthy food and a healthy body image. “As we head towards the hotter months, the thought of stripping down to a swimming costume can be daunting, so a planned approach to getting summer ready is needed.” Annette Sym’s five tips for healthy weight loss: 1. After doing much research recently, friends, on the pros and cons of lager consumption, I realised that beer doesn’t contain many vitamins – which is why you need to drink lots of it. Sure, it’s all fun and games until the beer runs out, right? Recently the world’s gone crazy championing same-sex marriage. I don’t get it. What’s the big deal? I’m in a same-sex relationship. My wife and I have been married for 12 years and it’s def nitely the same sex. Happy to report I’m very pro gay marriage. I f gure gay folk have the right to be miserable, too. But back to beer. We love beer; it’s been helping women lower their standards for years and for that alone, we salute you oh great amber liquid. I’m not much into preaching but I believe it’s now time to bow your heads and repeat after me:
“Our lager which art in kegs, hallowed be thy drink. Thy will be drunk, I will be drunk, at home as in the tavern. Give us this day our foamy head and forgive us our spillages, as we forgive those that spill against us, lead us not into incarceration but deliver us from hangovers. For thine is the beer, the bitter and the lager, forever and ever, BARmen.” Now that we’ve established that the majority of beer is divine and deserves to be worshipped, let me tell you about a drop that has been unleashed direct from the gates of hell. My mum always said, “If you’ve got nothing nice to say about someone, wait until they’re out of the room.” I’ve got plenty to say about the Netherlands’ famous Three Horses Imported Lager Beer, but sadly, none of it printable. I can only assume it’s called Three Horses because three horses urinated into the can and they packaged it up and sent it to the bottlo. I’d rather spend a weekend at the beach playing nude cricket with Amanda Vanstone than drink the Three Horses. Do yourself a favour this week

ne simple question kept coming back to me while driving Holden’s new VF Commodore – why? Why, if the Aussie icon is capable of building a car this good, has it waited so many years to do it? Why, if Holden can produce a car that’s of truly world standard – and in my opinion this one certainly is – has the Australian car industry all
but died before we started tackling the Europeans head-on? Why, if this car can be so f lled with technology, ref nement and quality f nishes, have previous Commodores fallen a rung or two short of the same standards? Why is it possible to add so much extra equipment, yet slash the price by thousands? Then again, why question it? There’s no doubt the VF Commodore
is seen by many as the last roll of the dice for the big Aussie sedan. Ford has announced the death of the Falcon, and Holden is under pressure to maintain its Australian manufacturing operation. But if this much-awaited VF Commodore is a demonstration of how good Aussie cars can be, in terms of quality and value, then reports of its death might be very premature. Continued page 36>

We drove the SV6 wagon â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sitting in the bottom half of the Commodore range with a starting price tag of $35,990 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which Holden says is almost $7000 cheaper than the previous model, despite the inclusion of a staggering level of standard kit. The SV6 will park itself, thanks to an automatic parking system standard across the Commodore range, but will also start remotely, and cool or warm the cabin from a distance of up to 100 metres. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, blind spot monitors in the wing mirrors and an electronic park brake. Inclusions range from hill hold control and hill start assist to trailer sway control. Inside, you get full iPod and Bluetooth integration with built-in apps such as Pandora and Stitcher music systems. Step up to the higher-spec Calais V and SS-V models and you can also expect lane departure warning, satellite navigation, frontal collision avoidance system, colour head-up display, sunroof, DVD player and eight-way power seats. Only the Koreans can match that level of kit for that kind of price but they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t match the VF in terms of power, space and driving dynamics. Fuel consumption, which is good but not
outstanding, is perhaps the only weak point for the Commodore and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unlikely to be a deal-breaker. You can be excused for thinking that, at f rst glance, the car hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t changed much at all, at least
from the outside. Styling is not a great departure from the VE, although on closer examination the changes are greater than you might think, such as the shapely headlights, vertical breather gills behind the front wheel arches and the restyled boot. The cabin presentation is light years ahead of the old VE in terms of style and quality. Soft-touch surfaces are complemented by the tasteful use of

alloy and polished f nishes in a modern cabin. The Sportwagon concept has been a winner for Holden. Combining wagon practicality with sporty looks was a big success for the VE model, to the point where it put its Falcon wagon rival completely out of business. The VF builds on that legacy with impressive quietness and sedan-like handling and ride. Commodores have long been known for their solid road holding, compliant ride and predictable handling and braking characteristics, and the new model enhances that reputation. And while the big Aussie six-cylinder might have slipped off many a shopping list, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still hard to fault for occupant comfort and its ability to swallow up a massive load of family items. Even the now-familiar 3.6-litre Commodore V6 seems to have undergone improvements as part of the VF upgrade. The six-speed auto is no market leader but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more than competent rounding off a more than adequate drivetrain. So, will the new VF Commodore spark a stampede of buyers back into Holden showrooms? Probably not, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sad to say. Moreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the pity, because this is a car that deserves to f nd its share of the market even if the days of Commodore dominating our sales charts are gone.

he developers of a boutique townhouse precinct in Brightwater say although the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital is not due for completion until 2016, it is already having an impact on sales. Aspect North is a 67-townhouse development in the Brightwater estate at Mountain Creek, only four kilometres from the future hospital precinct. Brisbane-based developer AR Developments reports it has already seen an increase in potential buyer inquiries that are linked to the hospital, particularly from young doctors and nurses who are already living on the Sunshine Coast or planning to relocate. AR Developments is conf dent that the remaining 27 townhouses in the estate will be sold by Christmas this year. General manager Mick McMillan says the developerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s positive outlook comes off the back of recent signals that the local property market is on the rise again. McMillan says according to data from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, sales of townhouses and units on the Sunshine Coast increased 22.6 per cent compared with the March quarter of 2012. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The previous three months have been our best quarter in sales in a two-year period,â&#x20AC;? McMillan adds.

SURF REPORT

What a great result for the Aussies at Trestles. Mr Wilson was out of control and must have been a bit dizzy given all the 360 airs he was doing. Now we have three Australians in the top f ve of the world rankings with three events left. Next stop is France then Portugal followed by Pipe. Exciting times. Closer to home, Saturday is looking like the pick day for winds so don’t waste it. On Sunday the wind will pick up a bit. I am f nally off to Sumatra where it is currently three- to six-foot with light offshore winds! These are the conditions that turn grown men into f ve-year-olds at Christmas with too much sugar! The days normally always end with us thinking we are far better surfers than the video demonstrates. Nonetheless it is a trip of a lifetime and I have been fortunate to have done quite a few. After 30 years surf ng and only recently realising the importance of yoga, I am forced to sneak in my handy 9-2 stand-up with my short boards. While I know I will cop a f ogging from all aboard the boat, I have no doubt they will all want a go! Stay tuned. Okay, let’s hope Julian can scrape together some more points and f nish in the top f ve.
FISHING REPORT

ESTUARY: Bream are around in good numbers with better quality at night in the entrance areas of Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers using prawn and fowl gut. Trevally are along the sandbag walls at Cotton Tree and wherever weed is growing. Catch f athead and whiting on the drift past Picnic Point and down to Chambers Island with whitebait and yabbies best. SURF: There are some great gutters and holes north and south of Pincushion with bream, dart and whiting working on the rising tide. Worms and pippies are the go. Catch tailor at night using pillies in the same areas. OFFSHORE: Charter operators are reporting black marlin and sailf sh taking livies and trolled 3x2 gar. Pearl perch are close to the Gneerings and around Murphy’s with whole pillies working better than cut baits. FRESHWATER: A few nice-sized bass have been caught and released at Lake Macdonald trolling lures past the boat ramp. Somerset is another impoundment f ring for bass and golden perch with live shrimps and jigged shiny lures best.
