he last time I was on a bike I fell off. And no it wasn’t dramatic enough to be interesting. I was riding with friends on a relatively mild bush track and hit a rock. And when I say I fell off, well, it was more like a plop. The rock slowed me down to the point where the bike had no momentum to remain upright and it listed to the right. I gave myself a few nasty scratches. It’s not as good as my sister’s story. Not being much of a rider as a child, she was determined to enjoy her pushie as a teenager, and headed out from the Pearson family’s Buddina home for an incident-free spin around the block. Rather chuffed at her achievement, she headed back into the driveway, was thrown by the lip of the gutter and promptly took out the letterbox. Not a bad effort as it was set in concrete and had
] survived much worse than a 13-year-old on a Malvern Star, but then, nothing lasts forever. Anyway, they say if you fall off a bike you should just get straight back on, and it seems the Sunshine Coast is listening. The roads, parks and pathways are brimming with bikes. But when cars are involved, too often a quick ride ends with broken bones or much, much worse. It can be a bit of a battlef eld out there, and on one side we have Lycra, on the other cold, hard metal. So this week our cover story is dedicated to the pushie, its popularity and its perils. Researching this story I discovered the number of bike riders is indeed on the rise, and so is the message about safety. If you’re a motorist who thinks bikes have no place on our roads, or you’ve ever shaken your f st at a rider, well sorry, get used to more of them, and turn the page to read our story.

ost of us learned to ride one as a child, around the Coast we see teenage girls cruising atop pink and green ones, there are the Lycra-clad gangs steaming down Nicklin Way, on the roads four-wheel drives loaded with off-road versions are headed for the hills. The bicycle is ubiquitous with happy childhood memories, f tness, fun, and, unfortunately, tragedy. When Australian track cyclist Amy Gillett lost her life in a terrible road accident back in 2005 – Gillett was training with teammates in Germany when a driver ploughed into her and f ve other members of the Australian women’s cycling squad – it was yet another reminder of the dangers of mixing bikes and cars. Gillett was just one of the many cyclists who become statistics on the road, and though her accident occurred on the other side of the world, the dangers are just as great, if not greater, back home. State Government data reveals that bicycle injuries make up about a third of all transport-related injuries that present at the state’s hospital emergency departments. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau reported that in 2008, 27 cyclists lost their lives on the nation’s roads, which at least were fewer than the 41 deaths in 2007. There seems to be a far greater danger of coming to harm on our roads if you are on a bike rather than in a car, and yet the road rules are clear – bikes have as much right to be there as motorists. According to the State Government’s Department of
Transport and Main Roads, bicycles are classed as vehicles, which means bike riders must obey the road rules and have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. While the rules set out clearly the responsibilities of cyclists and motorists in terms of how to handle roundabouts, overtaking and shared lanes, there is no minimum distance motorists are required to keep away from cyclists. The Amy Gillett Foundation was set up after Gillett’s death to help reduce the incidence of death and injury to cyclists. Its A Metre Matters campaign hopes to have the road rules changed to require drivers to keep at least a metre between themselves and cyclists when overtaking them on our roads. The Sunshine Coast Council has thrown its support behind the campaign, hoping to educate our region’s drivers on the importance of sharing our roads and reminding drivers that “if it’s not safe to overtake, then brake and wait”. The council that says, alarmingly, many drivers in our region get dangerously close to cyclists or cross double white lines rather than slowing down and passing when it is safe to do so. That message will only ring louder and clearer as more Australians jump on the pushie. Whether for transport, its environmental credentials, f tness or the social aspect, cycling’s popularity is increasing, as Australians throw on the Lycra in greater and greater numbers each year. Figures released by the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety show that almost two million

people in the country now cycle and the government is trying to get us all on board. All territory, state and federal transport ministers have signed the National Cycling Strategy 2011-2016, the aim of which is to double the rate of cycling by 2016. The government wants us to ride because it eases congestion on our roads, and for cyclists, it’s often a much easier, certainly cheaper and in cities a much faster mode of transport than cars, buses and trains. We are following the lead of other nations. A recent report by cycling advocacy group the European Cyclists’ Federation showed 34 million Europeans favour the bike over any other mode of
transport, and that the industry contributes a hefty 200 billion euros (about $290 billion) to the European Union’s economy. Cycling coach and local bike shop owner Warren McDonald understands more than most the popularity of the pushie, and its dangers. McDonald coached the Australian National Women’s road cycling team for a few years and is a patron of the Amy Gillett Foundation. He says the foundation’s main focus now is to promote A Metre Matters. “Their charter is to have zero deaths with cycling and vehicle interaction,” he tells MWP. “It is a two-way street. We recognise and

try to understand each other – that is the aim. There are only going to be more cars and more bikes on the road.” He has praised the Sunshine Coast’s Council’s involvement and support, and it seems local drivers could use the push. “I have friends who come to ride or holiday here and they do say that drivers seem to be more aggressive on the Coast,” McDonald says. “So we do have a way to go to help promote and educate.” He says we could take some lessons from European nations. “I have two junior boys I coach that have made the Australian junior continued over >
Louise Vant from Spin City Cycles has seen the popularity of cycling increase. “I am on the Sunshine Coast Council cycling committee and it is really proactive,” she tells MWP. “The council is trying to get people out of cars and onto bikes.” It seems that it’s an easy sell. “You get bitten by the bug. It is so beautiful on the Coast. We do group rides and … it makes you feel good, it is very social and you meet some great people.” Vant, who conducts women-only rides, says women are taking to the activity in greater numbers. She says the social aspect, as well as the appeal of getting f t in the fresh air, appeals. “There is a lot of chatting on our female rides.” She says the women who take part in her groups are aged from 14 to 70, and include girls who are just getting started and want a great sport that is low impact; women aged in their 40s and 50s who have got time and money; and older women who want a fun way to exercise.

team – Ryan Cavanagh and Daniel Fitter [who have been competing in Europe] – and I just spoke with them and they say there is a noticeable difference with how much respect and how friendly it is over there. “Cycling is growing in Australia. In time as people grow up with it, hopefully there will be a greater awareness.” McDonald’s faith in the increasing popularity of cycling is strong – he recently opened Finn & Dash Bikes in Cotton Tree, a store he says is aimed at families, selling a range of bikes for adults and children. He also believes children who learn to ride bikes became safer drivers as adults. “I have noticed that learning to ride a bike [as a child] creates better drivers.” He says that education, campaigns like A Metre Matters, the construction of dedicated cycling lanes, and getting children onto bikes will all help to further the awareness of bike safety on our roads. But changing the law as well as motorists’ attitudes is vital to ensure

bikes outsell cars.
In Australia, cycling becomes a safer sport. McDonald says the Amy Gillett Foundation has been lobbying all states of Australia to adopt minimum safe distance rules between cyclists and motorists. “There is no rule for a calculated distance and that’s why there has been a big push around Australia,” he says, adding that having a prime minister who loves to cycle can only
help their cause. “I do know that Europe is looking at one and a half metres. I think the thing with Australia is we are a big country with a small population and we don’t have the road networks” that European nations have, or indeed the culture of sharing the roads. But “the path system is improving with the council [on the Coast]. There is still work to be done.”
More than 1.3 million bikes were sold in 2010.

Domayne Maroochydore Mattress shopping may seem a daunting prospect: there are so many beds, they all look more or less the same. So, how do you choose wisely?
A good night’s sleep, along with diet and exercise, is vital to a balanced and healthy life. A quality bed can help you get a better night’s sleep to enjoy a more energised day. Sleep helps with the body’s healing function, boosts the immune system, reduces stress and assists with memory formation. It also improves skin tone and can assist with weight control - no wonder we call it ‘beauty sleep’. For a refreshing night’s sleep you need the right balance of deep-down correct support and pressure relieving comfort. Be Prepared. Think about why you need a new bed: is your old one no longer giving you the support you need, have your circumstances changed, do you need more room? If you need a guest bed, consider putting your current sleep set into the guest bedroom and buy a new bed for yourself.
If you share a bed, take your partner along to make sure you both enjoy the comfort. Whilst you’re there, see if the bed is the right size for you both. Queen size beds are now the most popular size for couples, but if either partner likes to move around you might prefer a King size bed. The Right Retailer. If you’ve had a positive experience with a retailer in the past, start there. Always ensure that the retailer offers the quality and selection you desire. Take Your Time. You may feel the surface comfort of the bed with your hand but this is no way to assess whether the bed has the comfort that’s right for you. You should lie down on the bed, preferably for 5 minutes or so – don’t worry, sales associates want you to do so, and will give you the time you need. Try the bed in your natural sleeping position, whether that’s on your back or on the side – that way
going to support you in your sleep is to ask questions! Find out what’s inside the mattress that offers proper back and body support. Establish whether there are pressure relieving materials that allow for a deeper sleep and f nd out what is in the mattress that minimizes tossing and turning. The Comfort You Love. Comfort is different for everyone, so try several different comforts when you’re in the store. Try out a f rm, medium and plush mattress and determine what feels right for you.
you can make sure it feels right. How Much Is It Worth? Purchase the best bed you can afford. Think of it this way: a good bed lasts 10 years. For as little as $1 per day (or $3650 over 10 years) a quality bed can provide great returns. Support Matters. Support is not the same as ‘f rmness’ in a mattress. The right support system provides correct skeletal alignment throughout the night. The best way to f nd out if the mattress is

LOCAL TEEN MAKES SKI TEAM
A
Caloundra year seven student has skied his way into the Australian ski team following a string of successes on the slopes this winter. Logan Hanckel has been a member of the Perisher Winter Sports Club for the past two seasons where he is in the off cial race squad. And the 13-year-old has made quite an impression, taking out a string of awards. He is now ranked f rst in his age group for ski cross, second in giant slalom and fourth in slalom with an overall Australian ranking of third. “My f rst place in the Australian National Ski Cross was awesome, given the conditions,” Hanckel says. Ski cross, which he describes as two or four skiers racing at the same time on a BMX course on snow, is his favourite event. “I also like big mountain skiing, the steep and the powder.” This year he spent from midJune to mid-September on the ski
slopes and is hoping to go to the US in November to ski under the direction of his coach, a 2006 winter Olympian, for three months. After spending so much of his time in the snow, the Caloundra City Private School student says he loves the Sunshine Coast and likes to get warm again, catch up with friends and hang out at the beach.
“Hanckel is seeking sponsorship opportunities and funding” Logan’s father Greg Hanckel says as part of the international team Logan will have the opportunity to race in Italy, Slovenia and Canada. “With selection in the Australian team it puts Logan on the pathway for the future and as he gets older, selection into bigger events.” Hanckel is seeking sponsorship opportunities and funding to help further his skiing at a national and international level.

PLAN TO TRIPLE ECONOMY The Sunshine Coast’s new economic development strategy, launched last week, aims to diversify the economic base over the next 20 years to create a more sustainable economy. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the Sunshine Coast Economic Development Strategy 2013-2033 is a collaboration between the council and business, industry and community leaders to deliver a “new”, more prosperous economy. “It will create the right conditions to attract new investment, increase career options for our children, raise average incomes and help our community prosper,” Jamieson says. “The 20-year outlook outlines a new approach to make us more competitive, demand-driven and responsive to national and global markets.” The goals for 2033 include almost tripling the Coast economy to $33 billion, increasing household incomes above the state average and increasing the number of high-value jobs to 100,000. The strategy outlines pathways to achieve the goals through targeting seven high-value
industries: health and wellbeing; education and research; tourism, sport and leisure; knowledge industries and professional services; agribusiness; aviation and aerospace; and clean technologies. Sunshine Coast Business Council director Gwyn Jarrott says the strategy is fundamental to the region because the Sunshine Coast has never had one as thorough or far reaching as this one. “It’s based on an understanding of what is really happening on the Sunshine Coast in terms of population growth,” Jarrott says. It shows a fundamental shift from focusing on consumer spending to a focus on high-value jobs and income. But he says the two critical things to focus on into the future are bringing dollars to the Sunshine Coast and understanding the nature of the investment market and who is looking to invest. He says implementing the strategy will require identifying and implementing the critical infrastructure followed by a private sector response. “We really have to have a well-disciplined approach,” he says.

PARENTS WARNED AGAINST CHEAP TOYS

SW parents are being told to avoid buying young children bargain store Christmas presents with many retailers caught out selling toys that can choke, strangle and burn kids. NSW Fair Trading says there have been numerous and repeated
dangerous toy infringements, with 17 bargain retailers penalised this year for selling dangerous toys. Toys posing ingestion, inhalation, projectile, choking, strangulation and f re hazards have been found in 18 regions across the state in 2013, resulting in more than $100,000 of f nes.
®
SHUTTERS AWNINGS BLINDS
NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe says 15 of the 17 offenders had faced penalties before. He says retailers have no excuse for not complying with Australian safety standards and the department is looking at prosecution options ahead of the Christmas period. “I am putting retailers and suppliers on notice that we expect people to lift their game,” he says. “If we do see repeat offences we will seriously contemplate taking injunctive actions through the Supreme Court.” The biggest f ne was more than $27,300 handed down to a Parramatta business found selling two banned toys posing strangulation and f re hazards. Stowe says parents can limit
risks by shopping at “reputable retailers”. “It’s not the large retailers that have been the focus of noncompliancy,” he says. “It’s been the smaller discount stores.” He says more hazardous toys are likely to be uncovered during the Christmas season inspection blitz. Parents can f nd more information about hazardous toys at fairtrading.nsw.gov.au. AAP

International students will send Australia postcards saying they wish they were here in an effort to win a free year at university. Up for grabs is a prize worth tens of thousands of dollars, including a year’s free tuition at an Australian university, f ights, accommodation, an internship and $15,000 spending money. It’s part of a new push by the government to promote Australia internationally as a great place to study. Education is Australia’s fourth largest export industry. Trade Minister Andrew Robb notes it’s been under pressure recently but believes Asia’s burgeoning middle class offers a great opportunity to attract as many as 10 million students within a decade. “But to realise this potential we need to let the rest of the world know about our capabilities,” he says. The Win Your Future Unlimited online competition will be promoted through social media and digital advertising in China, India, South Korea, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines, Turkey and Vietnam. Entrants have until November 18 to send the government a virtual postcard stating why they want to study here. AAP

Dr Barton Goldsmith reminds us that there are many wonderful things about being a dad. Here are a few:
baby in his arms happily waving as mummy heads off to work is attractive, but far fetched, he says. “I knew it would be hard, but I didn’t expect it would be as hard as this,” says the Sydney-based man. “I’ve got a great connection with him, there’s a lot of positive things, but I’m very tired. “The baby only sleeps 40 minutes at a time, so I have only 40 minutes for me to eat, clean the bottles and have a shower.” Until the past few years, at-home dads made up only a minute slither of the Australian family spectrum. Meeting a Mr Mum was once a rarity on the scale of spotting an endangered white rhino in Africa. In the last decade, though, at-home dads have cropped up more and more in popular culture (TV show House Husbands) and on the web in the form of daddy bloggers (YDad, Reservoir Dad, Dad Down Under, The SAHD Life). At-home dads are also more common in reality – they can be seen wielding bottles, pushing prams at the park and popping in to the local ‘mothers’ group for coffee. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there are 39,300 at-home dads (men who do
not work and say their main duty is caring for children) compared with 426,700 at-home mums. New-age fathering and money are commonly cited as the main drivers for men opting to care full-time for their kids. According to a recent survey by Fisher-Price of 500 Australian dads, almost half of new fathers said they would choose staying at home and looking after their little one over returning to work – if their family situations permitted. “I’d love to be at home with her all the time,” says footballer and funnyman Beau Ryan, who has an eight-month-old daughter. “Being a stay-at-home-dad would be my choice of profession and my wife would be going out to work. But that’s not the case, someone has to put food on the table and I’m the breadwinner for the moment.” As the identity of the at-home dad continues to evolve in Australia, the choices made by these men – to give up their paid jobs in favour of child rearing – is gaining more respect as society views their decisions as a positive choice, rather than one of men failing to succeed in the workforce. And if Australian daddy bloggers are anything to go by, at-home dads
• ENJOY THE AMUSEMENT Some little ones show no fear, and you f nd yourself rescuing them from the tops of tables or looking for them in the forts they built with your new sheets. Others may shyly share with you their artwork or other things they made for you. The creativity and playfulness of your children will help to keep you young when you get involved with it.
• FEELING THE LOVE There’s perhaps nothing better than having your children curled up in your arms or just sitting next to you, and all of you allowing yourselves to feel each other’s love. Just soak up the loving vibes from your kids, stepchildren or those you have adopted in some way. That feeling can keep your mood elevated for days.
• KNOWING YOU’VE CONTRIBUTED
• SEEING THEM GROW As our children mature, even though it may not be as quickly as we would like sometimes, it f lls us with a unique type of pride. Knowing that you are responsible for this little person who’s developing into a loving and kind adult, who may do great things for the world, is a very special feeling. No matter how your child is doing in school, and even if there are some behavioural problems, it is never too late to help your child develop into a contributing
As your child turns into a functioning adult, and at each step along the way, you need to know that just being a loving father has helped him or her to grow appropriately. You don’t need to be a great parent. You just need to be a loving one and, of course, to set good boundaries (which kids actually like because it makes them feel safe). Feeling deep inside yourself that you helped raise this person to become someone you respect (and who has self-respect) is empowering for you and your child.

e all like to think that once we retire life will become simpler. But when the time comes to move into aged care, this can change. Unfortunately, at one of the most challenging and stressful times of our lives, the government has burdened us with some very complex rules and regulations. Although there are many steps involved in meeting your aged-care needs, we will focus on the f nancial aspects. While aged-care costs may be partially funded by the government, you may need to pay various other entry and ongoing fees depending
on your chosen facility and, in some cases, your income and assets. The entry fee generally consists of an accommodation bond for those entering low-level care, or an accommodation charge for those entering high-level care. The entry fee for high-level care is an ongoing amount which, fortunately, is capped at a maximum of $233 per week by the government. For those entering low-level care, an accommodation bond is payable. The calculation of the bond is not prescribed by the government, but rather is negotiated between you and the facility. This amount is generally paid as a lump sum, but there may be advantages to paying at least part of the cost by way of periodic instalments. Essentially three ongoing fees are associated with aged care. All residents, regardless of means, may be asked to pay a basic daily care fee. This amount is negotiated directly with the facility and subject to a
legislated maximum of $311 per week. In addition, there is an incometested fee payable by residents whose total assessable income, including pensions, is more than the incomefree. This fee may be as high as $495 per week. Finally, aged-care facilities charge an extra fee for providing additional services or lifestyle extras. As you can see, it may be possible to be paying more than $54,000 per annum for aged care before any extra service charge for a higher standard of accommodation. Therefore, careful consideration must be given to your situation, and well before the need for aged care arises, so you can move into the facility of your choice while reducing the associated cost and maximising your income position. 7 Biggest Mistakes you could be making that could cause Permanent Depression, Anxiety or ADHD Are you not as happy as you used to be? Is stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, or ADHD overwhelming you? Are anti-depressants not working for you? Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow? We had an incredible response from all who were logged on for the webinar we ran about one of my favourite topics – Solving the puzzle that creates Anxiety Depression & ADHD. When you put it all together, it all makes sense. There are 7 key underlying triggers which can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them.
The 7 key common triggers that affect your brain, cause a compounding effect that your brain cannot deal with, which leads to long term, and then permanent brainwave pattern changes, affecting your personality, mood, and ability to think and cope, permanently! Fortunately it can be quite easy to address. Patients who have suffered depression for four decades, have reported to have improved out of sight after one month and other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment, including sufferers of Major Depressive Disorder, and children with ADHD, who have then been able to reduce their medication in less than 7 weeks, and these results are permanent and medication free! Proven with testing, these steps improve brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication, in adults and children. To f nd out more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or view the webinar on our website. A webinar is simply a seminar that you can see on the internet. You just register through the website and it will play for you on your computer. It’s easy and it’s free. head chef, Maselli’s Deli Q. What’s your favourite go-to meal at home? Fried rice (always cook more rice than you need).
<< Do It In a Dress One Girl raises funds to provide education for women and girls in Sierra Leone, where a girl is more likely to be sexually assaulted than to attend high school. One Girl’s national Do It In a Dress campaign encourages people to undertake a challenge while wearing a school dress, and a local ambassador has organised an all-ages live gig and fundraiser at Lake Kawana Community Centre tomorrow night, featuring local bands and musos – all kitted out in their best school dresses, of course. It’s on at 6.30pm and tickets are $15. For tickets go to scvenuesandevents.com.au.
Q. What’s your favourite local produce and how do you use it? Bangalow pork belly is a delicious, underrated cut of meat. At Maselli’s we braise a whole belly in a master stock for an hour and a half, then press it and leave it overnight. We then crisp it up before covering it in a reduction of the braising liquor. We serve this with Mooloolaba king prawns and an Asian salad. Q. What’s the best advice someone ever gave you? Five minutes now saves 10 minutes later. Q. Who’s the most interesting person you’ve ever cooked for? The wife – she’d kill me if I didn’t say her.
TALKING LOCAL PRODUCE
Q. What’s the best part of being a chef? The camaraderie in the kitchen makes even the bad days enjoyable.
with Kieran O’Rourke, chef, One Up Bar & Bistro >> What’s your favourite locally sourced produce and how do you use it? That’s a hard one. It’s probably a tie between Hervey Bay scallops, Yandina ginger and Mooloolaba prawns. Locally sourced products arrive in the kitchen with a lot less processing and handling and a lot more f avour, due to their freshness. I believe that showcasing the product itself requires simplicity, especially with seafood. So I would probably use all three of these in a simple Singapore noodle dish.
Q. What task do you love handing over to your apprentice, and why? Dishes. No, only joking. I like to give my apprentice the creative freedom to come up with his own dishes to put on our weekly specials,
as I believe it provides him with the conf dence to be experimental, which I think is essential when becoming a good all-round chef. Q. What does Maselli’s bring to the Coast that no other venue does? Superb coffee, fresh simple food, presented beautifully in a relaxed dining environment overlooking Lake Kawana. Q. Who’s the most inf uential person in your life and why? My dad is my inspiration; he brought me and my brother up when my mother passed away when I was nine. Now I have two kids of my own I appreciate how diff cult it must have been, so for that I’m very thankful.

ou know the bloke. Film star looks, dream career as a Formula One driver. Paid a fortune to swan around the world, surrounded by beautiful women and feted by the rich and famous. But always thwarted by mechanical failures, dastardly teammates and plain bad luck. Approaching 40, he’s decided to give up his day job driving the world’s fastest car and had to f nd another way to earn a crust. He’ll have to settle for driving a Porsche. Not just on the track – where he will join the German marque’s vaunted
sports car team, but presumably off it as well, in a factory-supplied machine. Some guys get all the bad luck. I got a sample of what lies ahead for poor old Mark Webber when we tested the Porsche stable’s latest progeny – its new Cayman S coupe. Not quite a Red Bull RB9, but a pretty fun way to get around in your dotage. The second generation is bigger, faster and better equipped, more eff cient and even more competent on the road. The Cayman S boasts a 3.4-litre version of the famous f at-six engine, rather than the less powerful
2.8-litre option in the standard Cayman – and is about $30,000 more costly. That extra power means a zero to 100 kilometres per hour time of just 4.9 seconds and top speed of 283 kilometres per hour, thanks to its healthy output of 239 kilowatts and 370 Newton metres. Not quite the ballistic performance of some of its 911 siblings, but more than enough to quicken your pulse. Coupled to Porsche’s fabulous seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the Cayman is a beguiling package. Continued page 32>
PERFORMANCE 0-10km/h in 4.9 seconds; top speed 283km/h; 0-200km/h in 17.1 seconds. THIRST 8L/100km (off cial combined f gure). VERDICT Still a dream for most of us, but an achievable dream for the lucky few. BOTTOM LINE From $139,900 (plus on road costs); as tested $154,380.

<from page 30 Perhaps the greatest thrill is having that engine perched just a few centimetres over your left shoulder. The bark of that famous exhaust note is never far away – an aural treat you’re tempted to explore even when just loping along. The arrival of the Cayman S in our driveway happily coincided with plans for a lengthy weekend road trip, including a high school reunion. Not a bad way to arrive for such an occasion, despite the odd mid-life crisis jibe. More importantly, though, it’s a sublime way to travel any kind of distance on some twisty, undulating road, affording the opportunity to open up that gorgeous engine and test the chassis, which Porsche says is 40 per cent stiffer than before. With the balance inherent in its design, its grip is immense and the Cayman never feels wrong-footed or unpredictable, no matter how enthusiastically you attack a corner. The steering is surgically sharp, allowing the driver even to adjust mid-corner without the slightest hint of complaint or risk.
It’s a sublime way to travel any kind of distance on some twisty, undulating road
The Cayman can be had with a choice of manual or double-clutch semi-automatic transmissions – our test car was f tted with the latter. The Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (mercifully PDK for short) – it’s the best version of this style of transmission we’ve tested. It also allows the car to save fuel by sailing when not under acceleration, which along with the automatic stop-start system, helps deliver quite remarkable fuel economy from a car with such potent performance. For a car so tight, so f rm and focused, it’s surprisingly comfortable. Sure, the ride can get a little harsh when the sports mode is selected on the active suspension management system, but not to the point of being unbearable. The reward, of course, is an astonishing level of grip. There’s also a choice of engine
OVERSEAS MODEL SHOWN
settings – sport to sharpen throttle and gearbox settings – or comfort to achieve maximum eff ciency. The Cayman’s cockpit is typical Porsche. No nonsense, and entirely focused on the driver. Dials are clear and concise, switchgear tactile and invariably well placed. One suspects that while passengers are tolerated in a Porsche, they’re not necessarily encouraged and certainly not pampered. It truly is the ultimate driver’s car (sorry BMW). Passengers do, however, get to enjoy the high-end Bose surround-sound audio system that, in such a conf ned
cockpit, is of concert-hall quality. Criticisms of the Cayman? Not many, to be honest. The little knickknack tray in the centre console could have been a bit wider and a bit deeper to accommodate my iPhone. Luggage space, as with most cars of this nature, isn’t great. While the two boot spaces are actually reasonably good, they can’t accommodate larger items. I had to shove my golf clubs into the passenger seat. Oh, the sacrif ces we have to make. Then again, poor old Mark Webber’s Red Bull doesn’t have any storage space at all.

How to avoid a property investment failure IT’S A GREAT TIME TO INVEST IN PROPERTY, BUT NEWCOMERS SHOULD BEWARE OF THESE COMMON PITFALLS.
P
roperty investment. It sounds like a sensible, time-tested option to turn your hard-earned savings into a retirement nest egg. The Australian Tax Off ce encourages us to do it and here on the Coast, it seems like the perfect time to buy that f rst investment. Prices are still affordable, seasoned investors are again parting with their cash and interest rates are historically low. Sounds like a good time to jump in and invest? It probably is, but it pays to do your homework f rst. Here are some investment mistakes that novice investors keep making. Avoid these and you stand a good chance of making a go of it:
1. Buying with your heart and not your head. Ask the average property investor how she decided on which property to invest in and she might mention that it was close to home or is in the town where she goes on holidays. Buying with your heart is the way to go when choosing a home, but successful property investors use their heads, conducting research, speaking with experts and getting sound advice to ensure the properties they buy will help achieve their investment goals. 2. Investing too little or too much. Many property investors don’t want to take risks and plan to pay off their f rst investment before buying a second one. No wonder the vast majority of investors never own more than one investment property. Others take unnecessary risks, borrowing more than is comfortable and not taking into account that in the future interest rates may rise, properties may need maintenance and tenants [ 34 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ O CTO B E R 4, 201 3
34.indd 1
may fall behind in rent. It pays to strike a happy medium, sensibly gearing your properties and using the equity in your homes to build a healthy portfolio. 3. Going it alone. Property investors who make a success of their portfolios rarely got there on their own. Having trusted brokers, accountants and solicitors is vital, but don’t hand over complete control. Instead, learn from the experts and gain knowledge about property investing so you can ask the right questions and take on the best advice with conf dence. 4. Buying one or two properties, paying down the loan and sitting back. Sounds great, but successful investors are regularly reviewing their investments to see how they can improve the performance of their portfolio. 5. Holding on when you should be letting go. It’s okay to cut your losses and sell a property that just isn’t giving you the return you want. But many investors mistakenly think they just need to keep paying off an under-performing property and then eventually there will be some returns. Sometimes it is better to sell – yes, even at a loss – and invest your money in a better-performing property. 6. Forgetting about fees and charges. When looking at your budget to see how much you can afford to invest and what kind of debt you can service, don’t forget to take into account the costs of mortgage insurance, stamp duty, rates, body corporate fees and maintenance.
• Almost eight per cent of the population reported to the Australian Tax Off ce that they have an investment property. • Most of those negatively gear their properties – in other words, they make a loss on their rental income. • 72.8 per cent of individual property investors own just one investment property. • 18.9 per cent own only two properties. SOURCE: ATO
7. Thinking that old fixer-upper needs just a lick of paint to transform it into a money-making machine. DIY TV shows have a lot to answer for. Adding value with a renovation or tidy-up sounds great in theory, but your investment can soon become a money pit that will never return what you put into it. Buying well, sensibly renovating to improve value and holding for the long term is a sound investment strategy, but the uninitiated have come unstuck by biting off more than they can chew. Be realistic about the work involved in getting a property up to scratch and if it seems too good to be true, it might be. 8. Listening to those who have not made a success of it, and not to those who have. Want to be a successful property investor? Most wannabe or new investors spend far too much time listening to people who have never invested but think they know the answers, or to those who have tried but haven’t made a go of it. If you want to know how to do anything well, seek out those who are doing it and get their advice. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

NEW HOMES WITHIN REACH Stockland has launched its Flare range of affordable, terrace-style homes.
S
tockland has launched a new range of affordable homes at the Bells Reach community in Caloundra. Designed by award-winning architect John Mainwaring, the Flare range includes two-bedroom or two-bedroom plus study f oorplans. Eight designs all feature two bathrooms, stone benchtops, high ceilings and outdoor living areas, and range in size from 97 to 149 square metres. The homes are north facing and offer a minimum six-star energy rating, and prices range from $236,700 to $310,250. Stockland’s Sunshine Coast regional manager, Ben Simpson, says the Flare homes – which are on freehold titles – are a popular alternative to townhouses or apartment living. “This is the third release of terrace homes at Bells Reach. The previous Bower and Zest releases proved to be a big hit with buyers,’’ he says. Head to www.stockland.com.au/bellsreach for more information.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Avoid passing on unsubstantiated information or jumping to conclusions. Clear, careful communication will help improve relations with others.
CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 You’re in the mood to entertain but in a quiet, low-key way. If life gets too busy then make rest and relaxation a priority, as you enjoy some splendid solitude.
LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Many Leos will combine work and leisure in productive and enjoyable ways today. But avoid talking about a property sale or financial transactions.
VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Don’t be shy Virgo. It’s your time to shine as the sun and Mercury move through your sign. But if you don’t explain things clearly then misunderstandings are likely.
LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 With Mars and Jupiter both moving through your career zone, the more proactive and positive you are about work – or looking for a job – then the better the outcome will be.
SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 You’re in the mood for travel as Mars and Jupiter encourage you to explore the beauty of the great outdoors. Make sure you take a loved one along for the ride.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Don’t assume you know where a loved one is coming from, you could be way off the mark. Ask for clarification before you initiate a course of action that they may not appreciate.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Relations with a child, teenager or friend should proceed smoothly, as long as you resist the temptation to criticise their efforts. Positive reinforcement is the smart way to go.
AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Avoid taking short cuts today. A slap-dash attitude only means you’ll have to do things twice. With a more methodical approach, you’ll accomplish tasks and still have time to play.
PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 With plenty of planetary action in your relating zones, get talking, Pisces. Communicating with family and friends will be fun – as long as you don’t jump to fanciful conclusions.

Mind you, I am not in the water now as I am sitting at a desk, typing this report and watching the tourists head off to the beach. I might leave them to it. While the forecast for the weekend looks fairly clear and warm, there won’t be a lot of swell. One to two foot on Saturday with ESE winds that will turn northerly on Sunday, so head for your favourite protected spot. If you really want to catch a wave, take something with plenty of volume to Kawana or Kings, otherwise grab the kids and head to the pool for some breath-holding practice. MWP’s man in the water can hold his breath for about one minute, 15 seconds, which is good – he will need healthy lungs were he is. Happy paddling!
