hen my son was about two he was crawling around on the front deck when my partner’s dog approached him and licked his face. A real tongue-in-the-mouth, stop-him-in-his-tracks, make-him-giggle kind of lick, too. My partner was horrif ed and the dog was quickly ushered away. My reaction? I just shrugged and said something about the younger Pearson’s immunity getting a boost. So which reaction was more appropriate? Was my partner right to be grossed out or was my indifference the way to go? It’s a question I was pondering as I researched this week’s cover story, all about cleanliness. It’s a funny old world we live in. One half of the globe is – if you go by all those ads for toilet cleaner and shower gel, antibacterial soap and spray disinfectants – obsessed with cleaning themselves and their homes, while the rest of
] the world’s population battles with a lack of sanitation, and often loses. So join me over the page, where I drag on the rubber gloves and get stuck into the cleanliness debate. To completely change the subject, this week MWP’s fashionable staff are donning fascinators and sinking their heels into the grass for our special eight-page Melbourne Cup fashion feature. We have winning frock combinations, tips on hair and make-up and even a page for the boys. It all starts on page 32. Also this week we are on the countdown to the Housing Industry Association Awards. It’s a great night that recognises some truly clever builders, designers and talented locals who work in our construction industry. Our three-page feature starts on page 40. Finally, if you are saving for your f rst home and need some motivation, hopefully you will f nd some in our MPP cover story on page 46.

hich kind of parent are you? Are you a ‘let them play in the dirt, wipe the dummy on your shirt, germs are good’ kind of mum, dad or grandparent? Or are you the hand-sanitising, Glen 20-ing, antibacterial type? Whichever category you fall into, no doubt you have an opinion on dirt. In our modern western world, cleanliness is what separates us from our uncivilised ancestors, and protects us from the sorts of diseases that aff ict developing nations. But how much of our perception of cleanliness is misguided, and could our need to clean be making us sick? The argument that over-cleaning is bad for us was kicked off in 1989 by an epidemiologist called Professor David Strachan, who was attempting to understand the increase in hayfever in post-war England. Strachan showed that increasing rates of hayfever were connected with a decrease in family size, and in the British Medical Journal wrote that
[ 8 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ O CTO B E R 18, 20 1 3
8.indd 1
“unhygienic contact with older siblings or acquired prenatally from a mother infected by contact with her children” might help prevent allergies in children. Strachan, most likely inadvertently, launched the hygiene hypothesis, a controversy still hotly debated by medical professionals today. Since his study, there have been many others conducted that link a high standard of Western living with not just allergies like asthma and hayfever, but autoimmune conditions like type 1 diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s disease (see Alzheimer’s Link, page 9). If you’re a member of the generations that fondly recall jumping in muddy puddles, climbing trees, digging around in ponds and getting plenty of scratches from backyards and playgrounds, the hygiene hypothesis seems to make perfect sense. So do we just send our little ones out to gather as many germs as possible to make them healthier and strong? Jane Peake is a paediatric immunologist and
allergist, and senior lecturer at the University of Queensland. She says that while there is “a bit of evidence” out there that exposure to bacteria is good for immunity, “it is not quite so simple”. A lot of the evidence, she says, is based on comparing city-dwellers to their country cousins who have contact with animals, but Peake says, “Other factors need to be taken into account.” So simply saying ‘let’s expose everyone to more bacteria to make them healthier’ is oversimplifying a more complex issue. Peake tells MWP, “Levels of allergy are increasing dramatically and we are seeing a doubling of peanut allergy”, but over-cleanliness alone is not the cause. “What is being increasingly recognised is that the normal bacteria in our bodies is what is most important, so allowing that normal bacteria to grow and develop can decrease [the incidence of allergy].” Therefore, encouraging our own bacteria rather than welcoming it in from the outside is M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

the key to developing resistance to allergies. So how do we encourage the growth of our own bacteria? If you are a new parent or about to become one, you’re probably looking around the house and thinking about all the nasties that lurk in corners, and you are right to be conscious of cleanliness for your babies, at least for the f rst few months. “We are born with some [immunity] but a lot of our early immunity takes time to mature so the f rst few months of life are most important,” says Peake. The natural birth process helps kick-start that immunity, and breastfeeding, for many reasons, is important. Peake adds that the early introduction of solids from four months of age will also help prevent allergy. And including those allergenic foods in a baby’s diet before she or he hits the f rst birthday is a wise idea – so stock up on the smooth peanut paste. For your children, and yourself, Peake advises avoiding antibiotics and leaving your environment in a more natural state (in other words not overwhelming your home and yourself with harsh chemicals and over-cleaning). “Eating less processed foods is [also] in our interests,” she adds. Other research suggests time spent in day care, owning pets and visiting farms all help the immune system develop. It might also be a good idea to search through your cupboards and clean out all those sprays and foams that claim to annihilate germs. Peake says it is not clear what all those chemicals are doing to us, adding that it’s a good idea to keep the house clean, but it doesn’t need to be sterilised. The experts’ advice is to use common sense. Peake says, “Appropriate cleanliness to avoid pathogens” such as washing your hands after going to the toilet or avoiding touching people if you have a cold is important, but you don’t need to “scrub every surface in your home”. The occasional mud pie probably won’t hurt, either.
facing the facts:
Listerine who says?
The mouthwash Listerine was invented in the 19th century, but it wasn’t for mouths. It was a surgical antiseptic.
the toothbrush
The saying “cleanliness is next to godliness” does not appear in the Bible.
Archaeological digs have found evidence of bristled toothbrushes from as far back as 1600BC, but humans have used feathers, twigs, bones and porcupine quills to clean their chops.
The Alzheimer’s link The hygiene hypothesis has been blamed for hayfever, nut allergies and eczema, and now new research says that cleanliness in developed nations could also be contributing to Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers from Britain’s University of Cambridge studied close to 200 cases of Alzheimer’s in various nations around the globe, and concluded that people living in urbanised nations who enjoyed good sanitation were more likely to suffer from the disease than those who lived in developing nations where the risk of infectious diseases was higher. The new study certainly adds to the hygiene hypothesis debate However, other medical experts are wary of its conclusions, saying that other factors such as diet, education, whether the sufferers smoke or not and their other health factors need also be considered.

soap
Go with the flow While some of us in richer nations would do well to take off the gloves, put down the antibacterial spray and spend less time cleaning, much of the world’s population face dire consequences as a result of poor sanitation. On October 15, Global Handwashing Day was recognised around the world. It is an initiative of the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap, which was formed in 2001 to educate the people of developing nations on how to prevent disease through proper hand washing with soap. Why is washing your hands with soap so important? Human faeces is the main source of diarrheal pathogens that cause a range of potentially deadly diseases. UNICEF estimates that diarrhoea kills a child every 30 seconds. Washing with soap is a simple and cost effective way to prevent disease.
was rarely used until the Industrial Revolution. It was made on a small scale from animal fat, and was too harsh for skin. Briton Andrew

ARTY BOARDS MAKE A SPLASH

Kawana man has combined his love of art and surfing to create a unique business customising surfboards. Dave West launched the business, Ctrl V, last weekend with an exhibition of his custom surfboards at Maroochydore’s Just Us Gallery. West and his wife Dani customise the boards using reproduced digital images to create works of art that can be used in the water, displayed in the home or boardroom, or given as a gift. In an Australian f rst, the business offers a range of decals, a made-to-measure laminate over a vinyl self-adhesive f lm to place digital image reproductions on the board above the f breglass. The couple came up with the concept while holidaying in Bali. “That day we did some research in Canggu, sitting by the pool, watching the surf and dreaming about the potential of combining a career, a lifestyle and a sport I love and Ctrl V was born,” West says. Central to the couple’s business ethos is using the work of local

The State Government is considering calling in the development application for the proposed extension of Sunshine Plaza. Deputy premier Jeff Seeney is issuing a proposed call-in notice to allow interested parties 15 business days to have their say on whether the development involved state interests and should be called in. The council approved the development application in July but a single objector has lodged an appeal against the approval. Seeney says if he calls in the application, the current appeal in the Planning and Environment Court will have no further effect. Elenbi hair salons go from strength to strength The owners of Elenbi hair salons are so positive about the future of business on the Coast they are planning to open a sixth salon early next year. Leigh McGahey and her husband Brendan have built up the business over 10 years and McGahey says their success has come from listening to their clients.
“I think we’ve listened because you have to – you have to do what people want,” she says. To be successful she says the owners, staff, clients and suppliers all have to be happy. “That’s been a very core belief that we’ve had for a lot of years that really helped us develop our business,” McGahey says.
To ensure they are able to maintain the same business standards across all of their salons the McGaheys have opened a salon on Plaza Parade at Maroochydore for the sole purpose of inducting new staff into their systems and processes, and they have discounted prices at that store. They are all senior stylists but

he music has stopped and the stages have been packed away, but organisers and local businesses are still celebrating the success of the seventh Caloundra Music Festival. Festival manager Richie Eyles says there was an aggregate attendance of more than 25,000 over the four days, exceeding the organiser’s target by more than 1000. Nearly 5000 people turned up on the f nal night to see Joe Camilleri, Ross Wilson and Daryl Braithwaite. “The most popular acts were Xavier Rudd, Eskimo Joe and the old guys on Monday,” Eyles says. The blue skies and hot weather helped make the weekend a success and Eyles says a highlight was seeing so many kids and grandparents enjoying the experience. While the festival is over, the f ow-on effects continue, with national and international publicity for Caloundra. “The Baseballs, from Germany, with their millions of European fans,
Joe Camilleri, Daryl Braithwaite & Ross Wilson have been spruiking Caloundra and its fantastic festival on their social media pages,” Eyles says. The fringe festival was also a success for local businesses, bringing in new customers from further af eld. Luke Bartlett, owner of Caloundra restaurant Forty Five 51, says all local businesses should get on board for future festivals. He says the busking festival attracted more than 2500 votes and generated foot traff c to those venues with buskers performing. “It was the third year of the busking festival so it’s good to see it

The inaugural pool parties held over three nights at Kings Beach pool were ticketed events and attracted visitors from Ipswich, Gympie and the Gold Coast. “People are starting to identify that Caloundra has this fringe festival week, culminating with a music festival,” Bartlett says. “They’re coming from far and wide just for the festival.” He says the festival was also a huge success for local accommodation places with reports most were close to capacity for the entire week.

ne upon a time you shared a meal with a few close friends. These days, you share it with all of them. Cafes and bars are asking customers to ‘check in’ on social media, and rewarding them accordingly. Patrons at The Hive Bar in Erskineville, in Sydney’s inner west, are encouraged to download an app in which they earn reward points by checking in or uploading photos. Manager Nick Diver says it has created a hype around the venue. Prizes include cocktails, wine, beer, mezze platters, and even clothing. “It’s the word of mouth, and that works with us, that’s how people know about our bar … the app [spreads] like wildf re through those circles of friends,” he says. The Marlborough Hotel in nearby Newtown has been running a “check in for chips” promotion in which
customers who check in receive a free bowl of chips. Licensee Richie Haines says they have had more than 32,000 check ins. Laurel Papworth, a social media expert, says the ripple effect of a customer checking in, exposure the company didn’t pay for, goes directly to the target demographic – friends who often share the same interests, age, and location. “You’re doing the advertising for them, what are you going to get in return? I can see why restaurants would offer a glass of wine; I think that would be the minimum,” Papworth says. “Everyone’s going to start stealing my promo now,” Haines says with a laugh. “It’s such a good idea, now it’s going to be everywhere.” AAP

OS ANGELES – Angelina Jolie is the only modern beauty who could compete with silver screen legends Marilyn Monroe and Ava Gardner, according to celebrity photographer Terry O’Neill. The British cameraman has captured the world’s most iconic beauties during his prolif c career, and he insists the days of the movie siren are numbered – because so few current stars possess the look, the elegance and the class of the greats. But there is one actress who rises above the rest – Tomb Raider beauty Jolie, now living in Sydney while she directs Unbroken. “Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Marilyn Monroe, all of them were stunning. Now, they all seem the same,” O’Neill says. “The only one who really stands out is Angelina Jolie, a different class of girl altogether. She’s a stunning, beautiful woman – a rarity.” O’Neill also reveals the stunning stars he caught on camera all had one

I said to Ava, ‘You are def nitely the most beautiful of women’. She said, ‘Oh, shut up!’ “I said to Michelle Pfeiffer one day, ‘You’re stunning!’ She said, ‘Oh, don’t be silly’.” AAP

Not as Happy as you used to be? Is Stress, Anxiety, Depression or Insomnia overwhelming you?
[
Are Anti-Depressants not working for you? Find out why! Do you find yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow?
Often, sufferers are able to correlate the first sign of symptoms, coinciding with a trip overseas where they experienced a tummy bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. Australia is so close to the Indonesian countries it can be transmitted from, and Australians travel there often for their holidays, so imagine the amount of people coming back who could be infected and how it can be passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work.

One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. ost competent financial advisers believe investors should start their investment strategy by choosing an appropriate asset allocation. That is, deciding on how best to spread capital across the key investment asset classes. Academic studies and experienced investment professionals widely accept that the asset allocation decision is likely to be the predominant driver of the variation in an investor’s investment returns. By selecting an appropriate asset allocation, an investor should maximise the probability of successful investment outcomes, at a level of risk most suited to their investment objectives. Inexperienced investors sometimes wish to invest all their capital in the single asset class which they believe will perform most strongly over the short to medium term. For example, a common question is whether it is a good time to sell property and invest the sale proceeds in the stock market or should I be selling my shares and going to cash. History suggests that such decisions are very diff cult to time correctly. Risk-return characteristics of asset classes have differing levels of risk and return. In general, cash and f xed-income securities are considered to carry the least amount of investment risk, while Australian shares, international shares and many types of alternative assets are considered to carry a higher level of risk. That is, they typically have greater volatility in their returns. Listed property trusts had traditionally fallen somewhere in the middle. However, listed property has become riskier, displaying higher return volatility. This ref ects the wider range of business activities in which listed property trusts have engaged over recent years. The key to asset allocation is
combining individual asset classes in the best proportions to obtain the optimal overall portfolio trade-off between risk and return. The goal is to combine assets with different risk and return prof les. If you diversify across very similar investments, which all perform alike during similar economic and market conditions, then the benef ts of diversif cation are reduced. Therefore diversifying across bonds, shares and indeed the whole spectrum of asset classes and within asset classes permits sensible investors to construct an overall portfolio that has a superior tradeoff between risk and return. Up, up and away
The Coast’s newly announced FIFO charter f ights will bring a welcome boost to our economy, writes Jarna Baudinette.
L
ocal aviation business Machjet International will be the first tenant at Sunshine Coast Airport’s new Aerospace Precinct when it opens next February. Machjet, which is a subsidiary of Sunshine Coast-based McDermott Aviation, will begin offering f xed-wing aircraft for FIFO workers f ying to and from mining sites in regional and farnorth Queensland. It will also consolidate its maintenance services – which are currently outsourced to a number of locations around Australia – to the new Sunshine Coast base. Machjet managing director Simon McDermott says McDermott Aviation is already Australia’s largest privately owned aviation company, and the deal is a welcome opportunity to further
develop its strong reputation. “We’ve been doing this type of FIFO and support work for a long time, but it’s a chance for us to expand and take on a few new clienteles,” McDermott says. “We’re at the point where we’ve now got large mining companies coming to us and asking for solutions. “At the moment we’re doing FIFO out of Archerf eld [in Brisbane’s south-west] and Townsville. Having the Sunshine Coast as a base was our f rst preference, but we did explore all other options. “It’s simply bringing it back to the fact that having good staff is the major point to having a successful company, and having people based on the Sunshine Coast guarantees that. It’s not the worst place to live in the world.” The announcement was made at
a conference of the Regional Aviation Association of Australia in Coolum last week. At the time, Sunshine Coast Council mayor Mark Jamieson said it was “wonderful news” that would create high-tech, high-value jobs, and further the council’s aim of “developing the airport as a major aviation economic and employment hub for the region”. “Expansion of the aviation industry here on the Coast is identif ed as a key pillar of our new Economic Development Strategy document,” Jamieson said. “This development will result in an additional 16.5 full-time equivalent aviation positions providing an additional $1.82 million indirect wages to the region annually, and is estimated to have a f ow-on effect to the economy of $5.5 million.”
The provision of weekly FIFO options will allow workers in regional and mining towns to base themselves and their families on the Sunshine Coast, meaning a greater portion of prof ts from the resources boom will make their way into the local economy. McDermott Aviation also operates a helicopter arm, and McDermott says the expansion will provide future employment opportunities for those wanting to work in the aviation industry, either as pilots or in specialist trade work such as maintenance or support services. “We’ve got 17 [helicopter] f re f ghting contracts for the next f ve years; we’re going to have a huge amount of crew coming through. And more importantly, wanting to work for us, because we’re based on the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “It’s an attractive place to call home.”

minutes with… Donna Forrest
Chef, Club Central Caloundra
What’s your favourite go-to meal at home? Anything chicken. It’s so quick and easy to make a tasty, delicious meal. My favourite would have to be chicken stir-fry using fresh vegetables.
Winnie the Pooh author AA Milne
What’s the best advice someone ever gave you? Make sure you put it in your diary. It’s so easy to forget things and I f nd I am much more organised when I write things down. Who’s the most interesting person you’ve ever cooked for? I’ve been at the club for 16 years now, so I’ve met many interesting people – everyone has a story to tell. But if I had to pick one it would have to be Dave, my husband. I actually met him at the club. He asked me what meal I recommended and I suggested pork stir-fry. He ordered it and when he f nished I asked him how his meal was and he said it was the best meal ever. Eight months later we were married! What’s your favourite local produce and how do you use it? I love mushrooms. I get mine from Wurtulla Fruit
and Veg. They source their produce locally and I f nd them so fresh and tasty. We make the club’s famous mushroom sauce from their ingredients. What’s the best part of being a chef? There are so many things I love about being a chef, but if I had to choose one, it would be pursuing food knowledge. Food is so fascinating; how the slightest change in f avour, texture, and seasoning can be the difference between an okay dish and some of the best food ever. I like the freedom to be creative and to make a meal from scratch that people appreciate. I also have a great team I work alongside and that makes a difference.
>> LEMON AID The humble lemon is one of the most versatile kitchen aids going around. Sprinkle a few drops of lemon juice over cut fruit or salads to keep them fresh, or pop a few discarded lemon skins in the oven while it cools, to get rid of any residual baking smells.
SCORE A STEAK: Popular family steakhouse Outback Jacks opened in Nambour last week. Outback Jacks is on the corner of Currie and Mills streets, in the old Club Hotel building.
What task do you love being able to hand over to your apprentice and why? The dishes. Not my favourite job. Who’s the most influential person in your life and why? My husband is my biggest support. He’s always there if I need a hug.

BAKED STONE FRUIT Can’t wait for the new season stone fruit? What’s on sale at the moment may lack f avour and be a bit hard – so here’s a simple baked dessert that can be served hot or cold. You’ll need: • 2 plums, 2 peaches, 2 apricots or nectarines, all cut in ½ and pitted • ½ cup balsamic vinegar (look for a little age and good quality). Place the fruit in a small baking dish and drizzle with balsamic vinegar, season with a little salt and pepper and transfer to the oven. Roast at 180 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes until soft. Transfer to bowls and drizzle with any remaining balsamic vinegar from the baking dish. Top each bowl with a scoop of ice cream or yoghurt.

BRIGHT EYES
ANTI-AGING ACTION Synthetic snake venom
Make your eyes pop with vibrant marine hues of electric blue, aqua, turquoise, periwinkle blue, cobalt and sapphire – one of the prettiest make-up trends for spring/ summer 2013. Apply at the b base of your lid, then blend int into the edges of your eye, or just ju highlight the corners. Do Don’t go past the crease of your eye unless you’re heading to an ‘80s party!
Synthetic snake venom is said to mimic the effect of a peptide found in the venom of the temple viper, effectively blocking the neuromuscular contractions that cause facial muscle tension and relaxing the skin. Think botox without the needles. Moisture Defence from Skinstitut uses synthetic snake venom, peptides and kakadu plum extract to moisturise, smooth skin and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. NEW BEAUTY TREATMENTS with Susan Jarvis
A
new way to treat stretch marks, acne scarring, large pores, photo-aging, smoker’s lines and wrinkles has arrived on the Sunshine Coast. The procedure uses a micro-needling technique combined with a fractional radio frequency to create collagen remodelling, reducing the appearance of lines, wrinkles and scars. According to Susan Jarvis, dermal therapist at Lavish Cosmetic Surgery
Clinic in Minyama, the Inf ni procedure by Lutronic is a safe treatment with minimal downtime that gets great results. “It doesn’t use any form of laser or light treatment so there’s no risk of hypo or hyperpigmentation,” says Jarvis. “It uses medical-strength equipment, so you need a good qualif ed operator to do the procedure. In contrast to laser treatment, it can be worked on all skin types. “If I’m treating someone who has those vertical smoker’s lines on the top lip, within a few days their skin has pretty much returned to normal. “It’s fantastic for skin tightening and it’s amazing on stretch marks. Nothing will ever completely eliminate them, but
this is the best I’ve ever seen. I did a scar below someone’s eyebrow and after one treatment, the scar is actually gone.” Jarvis says crow’s feet can be treated in one to three sessions and it can also give a more youthful look to the neck and decolletage area. A topical anaesthetic is applied and when working around the sensitive mouth area, a dental block is given. The treatment has TGA approval and has been available on the Sunshine Coast for a little over a month. “It has generated absolutely huge interest,” says Jarvis, adding that after an initial program has been completed, a yearly top-up may be all that’s needed.
When two people kiss they get very close, allowing each individual to assess the other through taste or smell. The signals kissing provides may develop biological cues for compatibility, genetic f tness or general health, scientists believe. Researchers investigated the smooching truth by conducting an online survey in which more than 900 adults answered questions about the role of kissing. The study showed both men and women place a high value on kissing, suggesting it may help in mate assessment. The signif cance of kissing changed according to the type of relationship people were in or seeking, it was found. Women rated it as especially important in long-term relationships, suggesting that kissing also plays a key role in maintaining attachment between established couples. PA

WHAT IS AUDITORY PROCESSING? The way we process sound can vary between people. One of my clients just told me the story where the wife can hear the neighbour’s dog barking all night and when she f nally asks her husband: ‘Doesn’t that sound annoy you? He replies with ‘What sound?’ After listening for a while he says.’ Ah yes I can hear a dog, now that you mention it.’ Why did he only hear the sound of the dog when his wife brought it to his attention?
Look up to 10 years younger
BEFORE
People who have normal hearing actually hear far more than they perceive. Where hearing is a function of the ear, listening is a function of the brain. Auditory processing explains what happens between the ear and the brain and describes the way the brain assigns signif cance and meaning to the sounds in the environment. It follows that good listening cannot occur in the absence of effective auditory processing. Auditory processing involves a relatively high speed of information transfer. It also requires a good attention span, a wellfunctioning memory, and sensitivity to the many subtleties of sound. When parts of this complex system break down or don’t operate eff ciently, listening is compromised. This may manifest as an inability to discriminate
between sources of sound, an inability to inhibit unimportant sound from consciousness, or insensitivity to subtle properties of sound such as pitch, volume, rhythm and stress. All these problems are symptoms of Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). The term ‘auditory overload’ is often used to describe what happens to people who have APD. Auditory overload is a sense of being overwhelmed and relates to features of the information being received. If information is highly specif c, spoken quickly, lacking in contextual cues, described in unfamiliar language or presented in a noisy environment, it will be very diff cult for someone with APD to comprehend the message or follow through with instructions. Testing and treatment of Auditory Processing is offered at Falls of Sound.

Bring your make-up to life
Wearing a black fascinator? Amp up the colour of your make-up to avoid looking washed out in the daytime sun. It’s a good day to be bold in your make-up application but keep it sophisticated. Apply a long-wearing foundation such as Gorgeous Base Perfect so it stays in place all day. Go for pretty blush colours in peach or soft rose and ensure your brows are shaped before the day to ensure well-groomed brows to frame your eyes. Apply lots of mascara or wear falsies to create that bold lash look.

LOOKING FORWARD Local Housing Industry Association branch manager Stuart Collins writes about tonight’s HIA Awards.
T
he Housing Industry Association is getting set to once again hold its prestigious annual housing awards ceremony at the Ramada, Marcoola this evening. Each year these awards celebrate the achievements of the residential construction industry in the design, innovation and construction of a range of house types, renovations and kitchen and bathroom projects. This year entry levels are up by more than 30 per cent in what may be a welcome sign of improving
conditions for residential construction on the Sunshine Coast. It is also an indication of the healthy rivalry that exists within the industry and the esteem in which these awards are held by HIA members. According to the judges, however, it is not only the number of entries received that is impressive but the quality of these entries in a region that is already renowned for building excellence and for many years has led the way in housing construction for the rest of the country. Along with the traditional award categories, this year’s awards will feature some new categories that focus on specialised areas of house construction such as interior design, outdoor kitchens and outdoor living spaces.
The other new addition to the awards program is the HIATwoCents People’s Choice Award that will be announced on the night, following a month of online public voting. The countdown has now begun with all winners to be revealed in a My Weekly Preview exclusive feature in a fortnight’s time. HIA hopes you enjoy this year’s selection of awardwinning projects as much as HIA and our judges have. We are supremely conf dent that many of these outstanding projects will go on to win state and national acclaim, ensuring the Sunshine Coast remains f xed in the spotlight. And the good news is that these HIA award-winning builders, contractors and professionals are all available on the Coast to assist you with your next project.

FAREWELL TO THE ULTIMATE HIPPIE VAN
I
t carried hippies through the ‘60s, hauled surfers in search of waves during endless summers and serves as a workhorse across the developing world. But the long, strange trip of the iconic Kombi van is ending. Brazil is the last place in the world still producing the Volkswagen ‘bus’ – more affectionately known as the Kombi – but Volkswagen says production will end on December 31. Safety regulations mandate that every vehicle in Brazil must have airbags and anti-lock braking systems starting in 2014 and the company says it can’t change
production to meet the law. Although output will halt in Brazil, there should be plenty of Kombis rolling along for decades, if only because there are so many, and they are so durable. Volkswagen produced more than 10 million Transporter vans globally since the model was introduced 63 years ago in Germany, though not all resemble the classic hippie machine. Kombi is an abbreviation for the German ‘Kombinationsfahrzeug’, meaning cargo-passenger van. It is so deeply embedded in popular culture it will likely live on even longer in the imagination.
“The van represents freedom,” says Damon Ristau, director of the documentary The Bus, which follows Volkswagen van fanatics and their affection for the machine. “It has a magic and charm
Perhaps nothing with a motor has driven itself deeper into pop culture than the Volkswagen, known for its durability but also its tendency to break down. Kombi lovers say its failures only reinforce its charm – because its engine is so simple and it’s easy to f x, imparting a deeper sense of ownership. The van made an appearance on Bob Dylan and Beach Boys album covers, among many, though in music circles it’s most closely linked to the Grateful Dead and the legion of touring fans who followed the group across America in the rolling homes. Steve Jobs is said to have sold his Kombi in the ’70s to buy a circuit board as he built a computer that helped launch Apple. But in poorer regions like Latin America and Africa, the Kombi doesn’t carry the same romantic appeal. It’s used in Brazil by the postal service to haul mail, by the army to transport soldiers, and by morticians to carry corpses. It also serves as a school bus and
It has a magic and charm lacking in other vehicles. It’s about the open road, about bringing smiles to people’s faces when they see an old Volkswagen lacking in other vehicles. “It’s about the open road, about bringing smiles to peoples’ faces when they see an old Volkswagen van rolling along.”

Put it away Ready to buy your f rst home? Here are some tips to help you save that all-important deposit.
COUNT YOUR PENNIES
The f rst step is to identify how much you need to save, which means f nding out how much you will need to borrow. It’s important to be realistic when searching for your f rst home. You may like the look of homes in the $500,000-plus bracket, but if your household budget is going to like something under $400,000 better, you will need to lower your expectations. You want to be able to cover your repayments comfortably, even if mortgage costs or interest rates rise; so make sure you don’t stretch yourself f nancially from the outset. Speak to a mortgage provider or broker, who will help you work out how much you can afford to borrow and the size of the deposit you’ll need. Then when you have a clear goal you can start working towards it.
BUDGET, BABY
Some buyers struggle to save a deposit because they have no experience in sticking to a budget. If you’ve never had a personal or household budget and are used to spending most of your income on discretionary expenses, it’s time to bust out the Excel spreadsheet and start calculating your costs. Start by noting your regular expenses such as rent, bills and credit card repayments, then go through your most recent bank statements and look honestly at how much you’re spending on things like food and entertainment. You may be shocked to realise how much you’ve whittled away on clothing or takeaway coffees, but try not to be too hard on yourself – while it will require some discipline, cutting back on this sort of purchase represents easy savings each week. If this seems like too much work you can download ASIC’s TrackMySpend app, which will help you set and maintain a personal budget by tracking your expenditure each pay period.
BREAK IT DOWN
Most banks have online calculators that allow you to set savings goals and break down the weekly or fortnightly amounts required to meet them. Knowing how much cash you need to set aside each week will help you determine which expenses to cut from your budget, and it will also make the task of saving a huge chunk of money seem slightly less daunting to begin with. 46.indd 1
Download ASIC’s TrackMySpend app, which will help you set and maintain a personal budget by tracking your expenditure According to the 2013 Mortgage Choice Future First Homebuyer Survey:
83% 60%
48%
of future f rst-home buyers say they are prepared to sacrif ce aspects of their lifestyle to save for a home.
say they would be prepared to miss out on a holiday, 24% say they would delay having a family and more than 19% are willing to move back in with family to save.
of respondents are anxious about how long it will take them to pay off a mortgage, while 47% worry about not being able to afford the repayments.
THAT’S INTERESTING
Speaking of banks, make an appointment with yours to make sure you have the right account set up to maximise your savings plan. Accounts vary depending on their interest rates and terms, so ask your bank for its best deal and then shop around to make sure it really is the best. An independent third party, such as a mortgage broker, may be able to help you with this.
HOMEWARD BOUND
Sometimes to go forward, you have to go back – to your parents’ house, that is. Many younger buyers graciously accept the offer of six months back in the family home to help them reduce housing costs while saving for that f rst deposit. If this is an option for you (and living with your parents again won’t put too much strain on your family relationships) then consider it – it can be a great way to get ahead. It’s important to set some f nancial rules from the outset – for example, how much rent or board you’ll pay and your contributions to grocery and utility bills – and have a rough timeline of how long you’re planning to be there.
KEEP IT UP
Remember that when you’ve reached your goal and paid your deposit, the saving isn’t over – as a home owner you’ll need to manage the higher costs that come with loan repayments, council rates and utility costs (such as bulk water charges) you wouldn’t have incurred as a renter. As your income increases, be disciplined in setting aside additional savings. This will keep you in a good f nancial position as living costs rise, and will also help with bigger bills that pop up along the way (or when you want to treat yourself to a holiday). recent sale in Sea Pearl has hit the record books – at $2.75 million it is the highest price paid for a unit in Mooloolaba this year. Sea Pearl marketing agent, G1 Property’s Simon Guilfoyle, says, “Astute property investors or empty nesters realise the scarcity of prime liveable beachfront unit sites along the east coast of Australia, and Mooloolaba’s little beachfront pocket is emerging as tomorrow’s hottest address.” Sea Pearl is a mixeduse residential project with 23 homes with an average sale price of $2.1 million. “Business in Sea Pearl has been heating up, and it’s fulf lling predictions of a total sell-out in the coming weeks,” says Guilfoyle, adding that the sale is a another sign of conf dence in the local property market. “Market indications and advice show we’re
advancing into a positive property recovery and Sea Pearl Mooloolaba building is earmarked as prime real estate on arguably one of Australia’s best beachfront esplanades.” G1 Property Mooloolaba is marketing all remaining homes and commercial leasing opportunities in the project.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Can you get the balance right between being assertive and being co-operative? It’s time to write, paint or do other activities that draw on the richness of your imagination.
GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Is a child, teenager, friend or colleague pulling the wool over your eyes? Don’t be a rash and gullible. Get the facts straight, before you bustle in and make the whole situation worse.
CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 The lunar eclipse activates your work and home zones so expect professional or personal dramas. And are you viewing a relative through rose-coloured glasses?
LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Your willpower and emotions are at odds this weekend. Saturn is also restricting your home life in some way – but perhaps it’s also giving you the structure you need?
VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Being around vague people will drive Virgos crazy this weekend. Surround yourself with individuals who have firm ideas about where they’re going – and contributions to make.
LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 You’ve got some grand plans but are they grounded in reality? Saturn brings you down to earth, as you realise you’ve been living in fantasy land – and there is no substitute for hard work.
SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Have you set goals for the rest of the year? Don’t make them too safe and sensible. With Mars and Jupiter in your aspiration zones, you need to be adventurous and passionately proactive.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 The fiery lunar eclipse falls in your drama zone so expect plenty of ups and downs, especially with children, teenagers or friends. Patience – not one of your virtues – is the key.
CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 The lunar eclipse highlights your home zone so prepare for domestic dramas and family fiascos. Aim to get the balance right between your personal and professional responsibilities.
AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Connecting with others will be lively and wonderful this weekend, as the lunar eclipse stimulates your communication zone. When it comes to money matters, have you got all the facts?
PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 A new financial cycle calls for a fresh approach. Cut the dead wood and start building firm foundations, whether it’s employing an accountant or fine-tuning your financial portfolio.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Well I have hopped off our surf charter boat where our last days were f lled with six-foot barrelling waves with only seven friends in the water. The last time I surfed six hours straight was 20 years ago. We scored the best swell of the season. One huge day there were some take-offs that were triple overhead. Let’s just suggest we are all a tad sore but cannot stop smiling. I experienced two leg robe climbs, which is when you are held down so deep you have to climb your leg rope in order to get to the surface. Seems fun at f rst until you realise a little more air would be helpful. Now on the home front, it’s ground-hog day with north-easters. A full surf feature with epic pictures coming soon.
FISHING REPORT
with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Flathead are taking small deep divers and jigged plastics with quality f sh being taken around the Bli Bli islands and the mouth of the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers, on the incoming tide. Bream will be about in good numbers along Bradman Avenue at dawn and dusk using fowl gut and prawns. SURF: Catch tailor up to a couple of kilos around Maroochy Bar and off the Mooloolah rock walls using frogmouth pillies and chrome slugs. The low tide gutters in front of Sea Breeze Caravan Park are returning quality bream right on the high tide. OFFSHORE: Trolling just beyond the breakers from Point Cartwright to Alexandra Headland is providing plenty of action, with tailor readily taking almost any shiny or spinning lures. A few squire and bream are off the headlands with better quality reef f sh out on the Barwon Banks using squid and pillies. FRESHWATER: The upper reaches of the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers are having a run of bigger than usual bass with surface poppers returning f sh around mid-afternoon. Some nice bass are also showing up at Kin Kin and Noosa rivers. Somerset has f red up for golden perch and quality bass are being taken on shrimps and rattling baits. Red claw is adding a bit of variety. Don’t forget your freshwater licence.
