he topic of this week’s cover story was a difficult one to research and to write about. As a woman I am saddened by the statistics on domestic violence and violence against women. Around the world, in our nation and on the Coast, it is a widespread problem that is largely hidden from the community’s gaze, though it has an impact that reaches far beyond the front fence of the family home. While the topic is hugely important, it will touch on subjects that some readers will be sensitive to, so please if you have been affected by violence be aware of the nature of our story. On November 25 it is White Ribbon Day, and while the statistics on violence are grave and concerning, what I feel so encouraged by is just how proactive many thousands of men around the world are in stamping out

] violence against women. If you take anything form our cover story this week I hope you take this – that the majority of men abhor violence against women and are prepared to do something about it. As a mum to a little boy my only wish is that he grows up to be a man of integrity, that he respects himself and others and that he becomes a kind and sensitive partner, friend and father. After reading our story I hope you come away with the same sense I did – that the world is full of such men. If you would like to join them to help end violence, there is much you can do. Turning the page is a good start. Of course we also have plenty of other stories to engage and entertain including my style and my body, our my time section, lots of properties for sale in My Property Preview, motoring and more.

here’s a shot of a whale in Sydney Harbour, idyllic beaches, rugged red gorges and a camel train at sunset. But don’t expect Lara Bingle to pop up screeching “where the bloody hell are ya?” because this short video is a shock tactic – highlighting disturbing new research that reveals one Australian woman dies every week from an act of domestic violence. The clip, titled ‘Australia, the land of secrets’ has been posted to YouTube by not-for-prof t organisation White Ribbon, which says domestic violence remains largely unaddressed. “The issue of male violence against women is real and insidious, but the extent to which it exists and its impact in Australia is still largely hidden,” says White Ribbon CEO Libby Davies. The video, which has also been running on national television and radio, starts like many other tourism adverts before quickly taking a dark turn. “Australia – the land of secrets, where nature thrives in the heart of the city,” the narrator says. “And trains run on sand and stars come out every night … and one woman a week dies from an act of domestic violence. “With a continent of unexplored wilderness, a coastline of deserted beaches and modern bustling cities, Australia’s secrets have many places to hide – uncover just one of them.” The claim that one woman dies every week from an act of domestic violence is contained within a new Australian Institute of Criminology report

authored by researchers Andy Chan and Jason Payne. The cost of violence against women and their children to the Australian economy reached $14.7 billion last f nancial year, White Ribbon said, citing a study by professional services f rm KPMG. A male-led movement, White Ribbon’s aim is to end violence against women through prevention initiatives and the annual campaign, White Ribbon Day, when men and women are encouraged to wear a white ribbon on November 25. The United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women def nes violence against women as “…any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivations of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.” The most common type of violence against women occurs in intimate partner relationships and, according to the World Health Organization, affects about 30 per cent of the globe’s women. According to White Ribbon Australia, at least one woman is killed every week by a current or former partner in this nation. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that one in three Australian women over the age of 15 have reported experiencing physical or sexual violence. And as the KPMG f gures show, domestic and family violence impacts not only victims and their families, but costs the Australian economy billions of dollars every year. AAP and MWP

This is perhaps the most common myth surrounding domestic violence. Women stay in abusive relationships for many reasons – they may be scared, f nancially dependent on the abusive partner, isolated, are concerned for their children, have no other support or be experiencing any other number of pressures. Violent men are also well practised at using a range of strategies to make their partners compliant, such as tracking her movements, eroding her self-esteem or blaming her for the abuse. These dynamics make it too hard to leave abusive relationships.

The abuser is the only person responsible for the violence. Most people who are abused will do everything they can to avoid abuse.

communicate with men and we feel that we have a responsibility to stand up and speak out on this issue.” The CFMEU campaign includes running ads that say “real men don’t abuse women”. The move comes after Victoria Police chief Ken Lay called on high-prof le men and groups to speak out against domestic violence. In July, Victoria Premier Denis Napthine, Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle and AFL chief Andrew Demetriou joined the push to end family violence. AAP

CFMEU national construction secretary Dave Noonan says the union wants to play a role in addressing what is a major community issue and he launched its campaign at the union’s conference last month. “There are far-reaching effects of family violence on women, children and families,” he said in a statement. “As a union with a large percentage of male members, we are in a unique position to

5. Only certain types of women experience violence Research shows that violence can impact the lives of women from all social, economic and cultural backgrounds.

6. There is nothing we can do to end violence against women The belief that men are somehow ‘born that way’ or biologically or genetically inclined towards violence is not supported by research. Instead, violence is a learned behaviour, which means it can be un-learned. SOURCE: WHITE RIBBON FOUNDATION

Wear a white ribbon on November 25 In 1999 the United Nations General Assembly declared November 25 as White Ribbon Day. In Australia, White Ribbon Day is funded by companies, community groups, government and individuals to engage boys and men and change attitudes and behaviours that lead to violence. Men and boys play a crucial role in ending violence against women, and while the majority of are not violent, there is much they can do to end it.

The easiest way to show your support is to wear a white ribbon on November 25. This is a pledge that the wearer does not excuse violence against women. You can also visit the myoath.com.au website to swear an oath against committing violence or you can host or attend a White Ribbon Day event. Head to whiteribbon.org.au to learn more, to register or to f nd an event taking place in your area.

The chair of the board of directors, Carolyn Bradbury, announced the oval’s naming at a dinner held recently. Nearly 350 guests were entertained by the school’s talented students before Vincent thanked everyone for their contribution and said he was blessed to be a part of such an “amazing culture” at the school. We really love it at Aspect North. We decided to downsize and move from another estate when our three children moved out of home to go to university.

“Thanks to our move to Aspect North at Brightwater, we now get to do things like walk along the beach at Kawana only 5 minutes from our new home.”

Our home is very big compared to other townhouses on the market that we have looked at. We have four bedrooms, two car parks and large living spaces. Being positioned facing north at the highest point of the estate, we enjoy seeing the ocean views. The shops are conveniently close by, only 700m away is the brand new Aldi supermarket. We take our border collie for walks around the park and it is very pleasant meeting the neighbours in the area. We still have the privacy of our home as it is a duplex design, but are enjoying living in the area and meeting our neighbours. We can’t wait for the lake opening and look forward to being able to go down to it and enjoy it on our walks. We are very happy with our place.

Annie Nolan accepting the national award and its holistic approach to embedding what it teaches in its own operations. They were particularly impressed with the TAFE’s title as Australia’s f rst certif ed carbon neutral educational facility and the SCIT Sustainability Discovery Centre, which is available to the local community. The awards have been running in the UK for nearly 10 years and are in their fourth year in Australasia, and this year there were winners in nine categories with more than 40 institutions involved.

unshine Coast TAFE has taken out an international sustainability award at the Green Gown Awards Australasia, announced in the UK last week. The Green Gown Awards highlight institutes in the tertiary education sector, which show best sustainable practice and Sunshine Coast TAFE won the award for Continual Improvement: Institutional Change. TAFE project off cer for corporate sustainability Annie Nolan says the achievement is due to the involvement and initiatives of the staff. “To be rewarded for our hard work promoting and supporting sustainability on a global scale is an absolute honour and I know all of the staff members and students who make greener choices in the workplace every day are incredibly excited by this announcement,” Nolan says. Sunshine Coast civil construction firm Hall Contracting has received a merit award for best practice in erosion and sediment control at the ICEA Australasia 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards. Hall Contracting managing director Cameron Hall says he is thrilled to receive the award for works on stages f ve to seven of a residential aged-care development at Nudgee and attributed the success to the commitment of his team. Hall says his team worked with the client to enable greater retention of valuable vegetation and engineered a piece of equipment to loosen topsoil, enabling them to plant grass seeds and use the equipment to cover the seed, reducing the loss of seeds to birds.

TIRELESS CHARITY WORKER AWARDED

Hinterland could lose bus service

S

ince Jordyn Archer established a notfor-profit organisation, Chant4Change, five years ago at the age of 16, she has devoted her life to helping others. And last week the young Coast woman was recognised for her self ess work when she was named Queensland’s young Australian of the Year 2014. Archer, who works as the events and volunteer manager for Destiny Rescue, a charity dedicated to rescuing children from human traff cking and sexual exploitation, continues running a number of charity events across the Coast with friends and family. Through Chant4Change she puts together biannual concerts to raise money for various causes. “It all started when I was talking to one of my friends at school and her dad was going overseas, undercover, to help rescue some of the kids,” says Archer. It was the f rst she had heard about sexual slavery and human traff cking and she was inspired to do something proactive. “Obviously I couldn’t go overseas and do any rescues but I could do something here to raise money and help.” The 21-year-old also runs Hope Within Reach with her brother and they hold weekly barbecues

for the homeless and run Winter Warmth in the cold months, organising food and swags. At Christmas they run Christmas Care and visit hospitals, nursing homes and shelters with gifts. Archer is in the running for Young Australian of the Year, 2014.

NEW STAGE RELEASE

The future of the Hinterland Connect bus service is in jeopardy following the release of recent useage figures. Figures for August and September show that patronage levels for the trial service, operating between Maleny and Nambour, are not meeting TransLink’s Key Performance Indicators, which will ensure the continuation of the service. Councillor Jenny McKay says the future of the service comes down to getting more passengers on the bus. “For the Hinterland Connect bus service to continue, bus patronage levels must meet and exceed the KPIs identif ed by TransLink, consistently month after month – one good month won’t be enough,” McKay says. “It’s up to the community to prove to TransLink they need this service and that it is viable. “Earlier this year, when TransLink was considering cancelling the service, the community rallied in support to ensure it continued – and they need to rally again, because the service is in real threat of being shut down.” The service is half-funded by the Sunshine Coast Public Transport Levy and the trial will continue until June 30, 2014. McKay says locals need to use the service and recommend it to friends to ensure the hinterland community will continue to have a bus service.

oast residents are invited to have their say on the future use of Lake Cooloolabin and Wappa Dam. The community feedback is part of the most extensive review of recreation in South-East Queensland dams and catchments ever undertaken. Minister Mark McArdle says the discussion paper about the two Coast waterways will identify ways that future generations can enjoy them. He says it is part of the State Government’s commitment to grow local tourism opportunities and increase recreation activities. “These Sunshine Coast lakes are wonderful public assets,” McArdle says. “Getting local residents involved in the planning process will deliver better long-term outcomes, as well as increase participation in local sporting and recreation activities. “We want everyone to be involved, from the visitors to the people who live close to the lakes.” Seqwater CEO Terri Benson says many of the freshwater lakes are also drinking water storages, so the review will need to balance the diversity of recreation activities against ensuring no adverse impact on water quality. “The review will result in the development of recreation management plans detailing allowable

] THE WEEK THAT WAS

WHY INVEST IN AN ETF?

Anthony Ward is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

T

he use of ETFs (exchange traded funds) has quickly become a popular investment option for investors on the Australian market. At the latest count, 86 ETFs were trading on the ASX. These ETFs are valued at $155 billion, which is around 10 per cent of the value of the All Ordinaries Index. The majority of money directed toward ETFs is invested in major international stock indices, such as the S&P 500 Index in the US. The opportunities are broadening, with investors also able to access regional equities, f xed interest, currencies and commodities.

ETF is a term that describes funds and f nancial products traded on an exchange that invest in or give exposure to stocks, bonds, commodities or other assets. Most ETFs generally seek to track the performance of a specif ed index or benchmark (such as the ASX 200 Index or the S&P 500). ETFs are open-ended, which means that the number of units on issue is not f xed but can increase or decrease in response to demand and supply from investors. This assists in ensuring that the ETFs trade at or near the value of the underlying value of the assets. The iShares MSCI Japan ETF issued by Blackrock (one of the world’s largest funds management groups) is a good example of how an ETF can enhance investment returns. The Japanese stock market, as measured by the Nikkei Index, has risen 35 per cent since the start of the year. Accessing individual stocks trading on the Japanese market can be diff cult for an Australian investor. The iShares ETF, however, provides

an exposure to the Nikkei Index via a single security traded on the ASX. The ETF replicates the performance of the Nikkei by holding all the securities in the index. Note that the currency exposure between the Australian dollar and the Japanese yen is unhedged on this ETF, so this will inf uence performance. During this period, the dollar depreciated slightly against the yen, which added around two per cent to the ETF’s performance above the underlying index. The ETF also pays the equivalent dividend yield of the Nikkei Index. ETFs are becoming more popular because they offer a broad range of benef ts including buy/sell f exibility; diversif cation; lower cost; returns from capital appreciation and income; fair value; and taxation advantages. LOWER TAX FOR GREEN CARS

VIAPPY / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

otorists should be offered tax breaks and parking discounts for clean cars to cut potentially deadly air pollution in cities, an academic says. Queensland University of Technology Professor Adrian Barnett believes politicians should take a lead in countering Australia’s “complacent” attitude to the problem. Better f nancial incentives to get people to buy cleaner electric and hybrid cars should be considered alongside new laws to keep trucks out of city centres in rush hour, he says. “A lot of the technology is there. Politicians could do a lot of new things to encourage it,” he says. “They could make tax a lot smaller for electric vehicles. If they did that, there would be a massive increase. Aussies love a bargain.” His comments come after the World Health Organization (WHO) reclassif ed air pollution as a carcinogen in October, after new research showed its links to lung and bladder cancer.

The Queensland Government has unveiled plans for a $5 billion Brisbane underground system for buses and trains linking Dutton Park and Bowen Hills by a 5.4-kilometre tunnel by 2021. The project aims to remove 200 buses from inner-city streets. Barnett, from QUT’s School of Public Health and Social Work, says the tunnel might reduce pollution but riskes just shifting fumes to areas around the entrances and exits or any vents. AAP

Drunk Aussie credited with the word ‘selfie’ After giving the world the Hills Hoist, dual-flush toilets and casked wine, Australia can now take credit for the term ‘selfie’ – Oxford Dictionary’s international word of the year for 2013. It seems certain the self e originated in Australia with a young drunk f rst using the word to describe a self-portrait photograph more than a decade ago. Oxford Dictionaries revealed this week the earliest known useage is from a 2002 online ABC forum post. “It seems likely that it may have originated in the Australian context,” dictionary editor Katherine Martin says. “The earliest evidence that we know of at the moment is Australian and it f ts in with a tendency in Australian English to make cute, slangy words with that ‘ie’ ending.” There’s barbie for barbecue, f rie for f ref ghter and tinnie for a beer. Oxford Dictionaries says in mid-September 2002, an Australian wrote on ABC online: “Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped ofer [sic] and

landed lip f rst (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1cm long right through my bottom lip. And sorry about the focus, it was a self e.” By 2012, ‘self e’ was being used commonly in mainstream media while former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd helped popularise the term in Australia. It gained momentum throughout the English-speaking world in 2013. Research suggests its frequency of use has increased 17,000 per cent over the past 12 months. Self e was added to the commonusage Oxford Dictionaries Online in August this year, with the def nition: “photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.” AAP

WORLD BANK URGES ACTION

Aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan

T

he bill from natural disasters is nearly $US200 billion ($213.81 billion) a year, four times higher than in the 1980s, the World Bank says. “As the global climate continues to change, the costs and damages from more extreme weather related to a warming planet are growing,” it reported on the sidelines of UN climate talks in Warsaw. Disasters cost more than $4 trillion over the past 30 years, about twothirds of which was due to extreme storms, f oods and drought, and killed

Out with nursery rhymes, in with Baby DJ School NEW YORK – If baby yoga seems so yesterday and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star so last century, then the newest craze among trendsetter New York parents is for you: baby DJ school. DJ, composer and playwright Natalie Elizabeth Weiss is offering an eight-week program to teach babies hip-hop, how to mix their own music and play air guitar. And her clients? Professional families in Brooklyn, New York, where wealthy parents are notorious for lavishing cash and attention on their progeny’s early development. “Parents love it. They freak out. They all want to bring their friends. It’s growing so quickly,” Weiss says. With songs such as That’s Why Daddy Loves Disco, and modern DJ equipment, she teaches tots under three about electro, hip-hop and house; how to play records, match beats and create funky samples.

more than 2.5 million people. World Bank president Jim Yong Kim said that Typhoon Haiyan, the most powerful typhoon ever to hit the Philippines, had “brought into sharp focus how climate change is intensifying the severity of extreme weather events”. He said in the report: “Such tragic events show that the world can no longer afford to put off action to slow greenhouse emissions, and help countries prepare for a world of greater climate and disaster risks.” The World Bank said more must be done to help vulnerable countries adapt to climate change and prepare for weather disasters. Building disaster-resilient infrastructure and early warning systems may be costly but saves countless lives. While no single weather event can be blamed with certainty on climate change, scientists have long been warning of ever more extreme f oods, heat-waves, cyclones and other effects of a warming planet. AFP

“Baby DJ, put your hands up, put your hands up, up,” raps Weiss at the start of the lesson as f ve toddlers sit or stumble around rugs on the f oor of a vintage clothes shop in Brooklyn. Some smile and look excited. Their parents move their children’s arms in time to the beat. Weiss believes nursery rhymes, such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Baa Baa Black Sheep, which basically have the same melody – are not challenging enough. The children certainly love pressing the buttons and pushing the slider on her DJ deck, but in a 45-minute class, not all the kids look convinced. “Let’s try the disco arm move,” cries Weiss, jabbing her arm diagonally into the air and down to the side. One toddler picks his nose and another chucks a record on the f oor. But the parents are hooked, clapping on the beat and jiggling their hips. AFP

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F Kennedy. Half a century later, the details of the day and the players involved in the US president’s death still captivate the globe.

T

he British paparazzi have descended on a quiet US community, where they recently marshalled forces to stalk a woman who lives on a winding farm road full of ranch-style homes, barbed-wire fences, 4WDs and chicken coops. Fleet Street tabloid The Mirror followed her to the nearest Walmart, where – unbeknown to her and her husband of nearly 50 years – they photographed and videotaped the two of them as they strolled to their car. The shockingly invasive images popped up on the internet this month and underscore dramatically why, for many reasons, this looms as an autumn of discontent for Marina Porter, who during her 72 years has lived with two other surnames – Prusakova and Oswald. It’s the latter one that has forever made this pharmacist-bytraining born in the old Soviet Union a public f gure, whether she wants to be or not. It’s her former name – Oswald – that has forever chiselled this Rockwall retiree into the pages of history and def ned her life as something that will never be truly private. On March 17, 1961, on a dance f oor in Minsk, Marina Prusakova locked eyes with a thin, wavyhaired young American, an exMarine who had already garnered international press attention for

having defected to the Soviet Union. They were married barely a month later. As a bride of 19, Marina, her husband and their newborn daughter emigrated in June 1962 to the US, where she would soon become a woman of infamy, Mrs Lee Harvey Oswald. Her husband, the Warren Commission concluded, assassinated President John F Kennedy on Elm Street in Dallas on November 22, 1963. Two days later, Oswald suffered a fatal gunshot in the basement of the police station, leaving behind three homeless survivors – Marina, then 22, and the couple’s tiny girls, June and Rachel. To this day, their mother remains a symbol of international intrigue, in no small part for having changed her story, f rst helping to convict her dead husband in the minds of most, then attempting to say he was framed. She told the Warren Commission in 1964 she believed her husband acted alone in killing the president and expounded on that in chilling detail in sharing her life story with author Priscilla Johnson McMillan, who wrote the 1977 dual biography, Marina and Lee. “I would not describe her as an accomplice or even an accessory,” McMillan says. “She was a bystander. She didn’t have any idea what he was going to do.”

Her husband’s guilt or innocence notwithstanding, those who know her say the term ‘survivor’ best describes Oswald’s widow. “I think she’s been a very good mother in raising those kids,” says Hugh Aynesworth, author of the new book, November 22, 1963: Witness to History, who f rst met her in February 1964. Her children got a break, Aynesworth said, when she married Kenneth Porter in 1965. It allowed them to live their lives under a new identity. Over the years, she began to speak openly about the possibility of a conspiracy masterminding his death, and in 1988, she said the presumed assassin was “not necessarily guilty of murder”. Twenty-f ve years ago, she shared her belief with Ladies Home Journal that Oswald “worked for the American government”. She also shared conspiratorial thoughts in a landmark interview with Oprah Winfrey. Gerald Posner, who wrote the def nitive lone-gunman book on the assassination, Case Closed: Lee Harvey Oswald and the Assassination of JFK, sees even the pro-conspiracy Marina “as a woman of integrity, because it would have been easy for her to mix up the historical record by lying”. For instance, she never retracted the fact, Posner says, that it was she who photographed a proud Oswald holding his rif e, in the backyard of

^^ Lee Harvey Oswald’s wife, Marina, holding their daughter June Lee, 22 months; Robert Oswald, brother; and his mother Marguerite Oswald, holding her f ve-week-old grandchild Rachel, sit beside his casket at a funeral service in Fort Worth, Texas, November 25, 1963

an apartment complex where they were living months before the president’s death, and where, many have documented, he often struck her in the face. “She’s in a position,” Posner says, “where so many of her dealings with Lee were one-on-one. All she needs to do if she wants to be a mischief maker in history is recant one of those.” Several weeks ago, Marina’s husband, Kenneth Porter, politely declined The News’ request for an

interview. “We just want to put 1963 behind us,” he said at the time. But, of course, his wife will never be able to leave behind 1963. In November of that year, Marina and Lee were estranged. She was living with Ruth Paine, an Irving, Texas, housewife battling the pain of her own failed marriage. Oswald spent weeknights in an Oak Cliff rooming house while working at the Texas School Book Depository. “I just feel she was a young

A G E N D A

]

mother trying hard to have her husband be someone who could support her, but he wasn’t that,” says Paine, now 81. “And she was very frightened by what she called his fantasies.” It was Oswald’s pattern in those days to spend Friday to Sunday at Paine’s house, with Marina and the girls. So, it was surprising to Paine when she drove home from work on Thursday night, November 21, 1963, to f nd Oswald in the front yard playing with Paine’s young son. The ensuing night has remained forever shrouded in assassination folklore, because of Marina’s role in what happened next. Despite the fact that, unbeknown to Paine, Oswald had been hiding his rif e in her garage, and would leave with it the next morning in a cylindrical brown paper package, he spent his f nal night with his wife pleading for a new beginning. He tried to kiss her more than once, but she rebuffed him. He pleaded for the two of them to get back together, and still, she rebuffed him. The next morning, he left behind his wedding ring – which Marina recently auctioned for $108,000 – and $187 in cash. Within hours, the president was dead. Over the years, Marina has expressed to journalists her lingering fear that her rejection of Oswald the night before may have accelerated the assassination or at least failed to prevent it. AAP

Putting a stop to surfer’s ear with Katia Peeters

S

urfer’s ear, also known as exostosis of the ear canal, is a common problem on the Coast among avid surfers and kids who spend a lot of time in the water. Exostosis occurs when there is abnormal bone growth within the ear canal caused by irritation from water exposure and wind. The bone growth can trap water and wax inside the ear, giving rise to painful infections. The condition is progressive and best treated by taking preventative measures, such as wearing custom-made ear plugs.

“Custom-made ear plugs are a lot better than the small ones you plug into your ear, which can easily fall out,” says Katia Peeters of Maroochydore hearing clinic, Falls of Sound. “We f rst check the ear canal and then push a silicon-acrylic material into the ear, which hardens after four minutes. We remove that and send it to a lab in New South Wales to have the ear plugs made.” Peeters says the waterproof earplugs will last for about f ve years and are proven to reduce the rate of ear infections in both adults and children. “They’re great for children in particular, as they are prone to ear infections, and that’s not something

you would wish on any child,” she says. The ear plugs can be made for any size ear and can even be made for babies, but they outgrow the plugs quickly. Falls of Sound also offers a brand of fully waterproof hearing aids which are programmed to enable almost normal hearing underwater. “It’s not that often that we f t them as they have a very sturdy case that’s a bit bigger than other hearing aids,” Peeters says, adding that waterproof hearing aids will become gradually smaller as hearing aid technology continues to improve. Talk to her about your ear health at the Seniors’ Health and Wellness Expo tomorrow at Kawana Island.

A pot belly after pregnancy is not a done deal, according to f tness expert Marina Perry, who created the Lean Mumma program especially for women who have given birth. Perry developed the comprehensive f ve-step system to care for the unique stages of post-baby bodies. Having two children of her own, she’s living proof you can have a super-f t, toned, taut body after having a baby. The program aims to help you gain a f at, tight tummy, heal back pain, enhance posture, lift and f rm your butt, arms, back and thighs and give you more energy. The program is designed to meet the needs of timepoor multitasking mothers. They can either meet in groups to exercise together, under the instruction of their local Lean Mumma trainer, or buy a DVD package. The Sunshine Coast’s Lean Mumma trainer is Nadine Hoffman at Coolum. Visit peregian-coolum.leanmumma. com.au for more information.

FASHION ADVICE: A recent invitation asking for ‘formal’ dress started an interesting conversation with a well-known and experienced boutique owner. Apparently it is common practice to ignore a requested dress code. I think it is embarrassing to be under-dressed and I don’t believe the term ‘over-dressed’ is even relevant today! The point is, if an invitation asks for formal or evening, wear a LONG gown. For those that say ‘cocktail’, a short dress is appropriate.

Frontman Mojo will be joined by Coogee Timms and CJ Lewis for a trademark high-intensity performance. The show begins at 7.45pm and the Quarterdeck restaurant will be open from 5.30pm. Entry is free. Fair-trade Chrissy gifts Looking for unique Christmas gifts that support a good cause? Goodlife Community Centre in Buderim is hosting its Christmas mini markets on Wednesday December 4 from 9am to 1pm, offering a wide range of fair-trade, handcrafted gifts including jewellery, bags, wallets, handmade Christmas cards, silk products, chocolates, wooden puzzles, woven blankets and more. Market founder Hannah Cox says the markets provide an opportunity for locals to buy and sell fair-trade products, which are made under fair and sustainable working conditions and terms of trade for people in the developing world. “Aid through trade is far more effective then charitable aid,” Cox says. “Fair-trade products empower the people who are making them as opposed to buying products in the supermarkets where the workers are often exploited in the production process.” There will also be a jumping castle and specials at Goodlife Café.

MAKE/MODEL BMW 320d GRAN TURISMO DETAILS Five-seat, five-door hatchback with four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. TECH STUFF 2-litre TwinPower fourcylinder turbo-diesel engine produces 135kW, 380Nm; eight-speed automatic transmission with wheelmounted paddle shifters; rear-wheel-drive.

THE BLACK SHEEP OF THE BMW FAMILY WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

T

he Italian term ‘Gran Turismo’ – GT for short – holds a special place in the automotive dictionary. The GT badge conjures images of sexy, made-for-speed machines – usually a two-door coupe like Maserati’s glorious Gran Turismo, the Alfa Romeo GT, the iconic Ford GT or even Toyota’s new GT86. All driver’s cars, from the ground up. But German maker BMW has put an entirely new spin on the GT badge with its new 3 Series Gran Turismo.

For a marque with driving pleasure so deep within its DNA, BMW has surprisingly chosen to use the iconic GT badge in a very odd way – on a slightly cumbersome, oversized hatchback. Instead of talking about its brilliant driving dynamics, BMW boasts of the car’s “elevated seating position, voluminous occupant space and capacious luggage compartment”. Hardly the things normally associated with GT motoring or with the ‘ultimate driving machine’, for that matter. But let’s not get

carried away with the name. Whatever you call it, this new 3 Series GT is not your typical BMW. It’s quite a bulky thing, surprisingly long and wide for a vehicle wearing the 3 Series badge, and not all that inspiring to drive. Its handling is softer and less edgy than we’re used to from this marque. It’s comfortable and serviceable, but quite a departure from the razor-sharp steering and taut chassis for which the 3 Series is renowned. Continued over >

PERFORMANCE 0-100km/h in 7.9 seconds. THIRST 4.9L/100km (combined figure). VERDICT Not your typical BMW, but a good one nonetheless. BOTTOM LINE $71,800 (plus onroad costs).

<from previous page If that’s all starting to sound like we didn’t enjoy the 3GT, it shouldn’t. The car has much to recommend it. It’s actually the second BMW to wear the GT badge in recent years. There’s also a 5 Series Gran Turismo in the company’s Australian showrooms, although you’d be lucky to spot one on the streets, so few have they sold. Like the 5 Series GT, the new 3 looks a bit ungainly and tail-heavy, although much less so than its bigger sibling which is just plain awkward. The 3GT, at least, has a certain wedge-shaped attraction to it. Visually, it’s a larger, more cumbersome piece of metal than its siblings, but also one that’s a very roomy, very practical version of the 3 Series. It’s substantially more expensive – about $9000 more than comparable 3 Series sedans – but with an entry price under $70,000, it will appeal to upwardly mobile, growing families for whom a 3 Series sedan is too small and a 5 Series too expensive. It is impressively spacious, for a start. Rear-seat leg room is vast, with

the extreme, whether under heavy acceleration or just loping along the freeway, something it does effortlessly. Long legs, plus the stop-start system to save precious millilitres while standing at idle, help deliver rather impressive fuel-eff ciency numbers. On the open road it will do substantially better than that. The 3GT will also be offered with a two-litre turbocharged petrol variant, as well as a f agship 328iGT with a punchy 180 kilowatts. While its looks are not typical BMW, it’s a nicely proportioned thing and its shape belies its substantial size. BMW boasts that the GT is one of the most aerodynamic cars on the market, its low drag coeff cient partly because of its shape, and partly because of a drag-busting breather-vent behind the front wheel arch and a speed-activated spoiler at the rear. The pop-up spoiler is a feature we’re more used to seeing on highperformance machines. Yet, curiously, it’s found on this car, but not on true performance machines like BMW’s M3 or Z4. Perhaps it’s there to justify the GT badge.

Paying for peace of mind

S

ummer in Queensland means more extreme weather events, like the big storms the Sunshine Coast has experienced recently. While there are simple things you can do around your property to minimise the likelihood of storm damage – such as clearing leaves from the gutters to prevent blockages, trimming overhanging branches and securing your outdoor furniture – with the new year approaching it’s also a good time to check your insurance policies are up to date, to avoid any nasty surprises when it’s time to claim.

HOME INSURANCE

Home insurance is designed to cover the cost of rebuilding all or part of your home if it is damaged by f re, f ooding or an extreme weather event such as a storm. With storm season approaching, it’s important to ensure you’ve read the f ne print on your policy and know exactly what you’re covered for – some insurers will cover for storm surges but not f ash f ooding, or vice versa. If you live near a river, dam or creek, make sure your policy covers all types of f ooding, and if you’re unsure, contact your provider directly. If you’ve extended or upgraded your property, be sure to let your insurer know, so this can be factored into your policy. If a tree branch falls on your brand-new pergola, or hail cracks your solar panels, you don’t want to be out of pocket because your insurance premium won’t cover the damage – especially if a quick phone call could have prevented it. Also, don’t forget that if you change your car accommodation – upgrade from a carport to an enclosed garage, for example – this can impact your car insurance premium too.

CONTENTS INSURANCE

Contents insurance covers damage to or theft of your household goods and chattels. If water gets into your home during a storm, [ 42 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ N O VE M B E R 22, 2 0 1 3

42.indd 1

If you’re rushing to storm-proof your home after the recent hail storms, don’t forget to storm-proof your insurance policies while you’re at it. By Jarna Baudinette

your home insurance policy will cover the ceiling, carpet and walls, but not your ruined couch, television or clothes. As many as 70 per cent of Australians are thought to be underinsured, so if you’re going to invest in contents insurance – and it’s well worth the cost – it is crucial that you go through your home room by room and accurately estimate the value of your household goods. This includes large items such as whitegoods and electronics or media equipment, but also smaller things such as jewellery and clothing. An easy way is to make a spreadsheet and update it regularly when you purchase new items; it’s also a good idea to take photos of more valuable items and store these with copies of your receipts or warranties. Many insurers offer new-for-old bonuses or combine your home and contents into one monthly premium. Shop around to f nd the best value policy for your circumstances.

MORTGAGE PROTECTION & LANDLORD INSURANCE If you have a mortgage on your home or investment property, your bank will require you to have the home insured. In some circumstances, it will also require you to take out a mortgage protection insurance policy, which will cover your repayments in the event of an illness, injury or other emergency that prevents you from working. Mortgage insurance guarantees your bank won’t be out of pocket, but it also gives you invaluable peace of mind to know you won’t miss payments in the event of an emergency. If you own an investment property and it is damaged, a landlord insurance policy will cover any lost rent during the repairs, as well as lost income caused by tenants defaulting on their rental payments. NEWS & VIEWS

PROJECT ATTRACTS INTERSTATE INVESTORS

O

ne of the Sunshine Coast’s largest townhouse projects is currently experiencing investor enquiry at pre-GFC levels, says Brisbane-based AR Developments. General manager Mick McMillan says the Aspect North development is experiencing a surge in interest from Sydney and Melbourne, as investors move north in their search for solid returns. As a result, AR Developments is expecting its busiest sales period in f ve years in

the lead-up to Christmas. “If the price is right and the product is of a high quality, the interest from interstate investors is there and growing,” McMillan says. “We’re conf dent that we will be able to sell a large chunk of the remaining townhouses over the Christmas and New Year holiday period, as families travel to the Sunshine Coast from down south.” McMillan says investors favour townhouses for their size and low-maintenance qualities, and says at up to 195 square metres, Aspect North’s three-

and four-bedroom properties have the benef t of being around 20 per cent larger than the average townhouse. Combined with relatively affordable prices – the latest Global Property Guide has Sydney real estate prices at almost double those in Queensland – this presents an attractive investment option. “Investors wouldn’t come close to f nding a product of the same price, quality and size of Aspect North, and in the same proximity to the beach in Sydney,” McMillan says.

SCATTERWORD

O H I T I S A S L Rules: Form as many words as possible. Each word must contain the centre letter. Plurals made by adding “s” are not counted.

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 The moon’s in your money zone, so your mind is focused on finances. But are you seeing your current situation objectively? Perhaps it would be best to get a second opinion.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 The Taurus moon puts you in the mood to appreciate beauty, romance, music, fine food and wine, plus other hedonistic pleasures. It’s also time to attend to your physical appearance.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Gregarious Gemini – you love to hear the sound of your own voice, but you don’t have to be constantly talking to prove a point. Today is one of those days when silence is golden.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 It’s time for crabs to socialise and circulate; mix and mingle. All types of group activities are favoured but avoid getting drawn into an argument with a friend.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Use your talent for self-promotion to shine in the spotlight and further your career. The old adage “It’s not what you know but who you know” has never been truer.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Are you being unusually subjective about a problem? To find a solution, try to combine head and heart. Nurture your foreign contacts – who knows where they may lead?

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 With Jupiter in your career zone, confidence will take you places professionally. When it comes to making a financial decision, aim to get the balance right between head and heart.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Let non-essentials go and focus on what makes you happy. Get back to basics, as you patch up problems in a close relationship. Try to see things from the other person’s point-of-view.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Get set for a busy day, as the Moon and Mercury shake up your routine. Fabulous opportunities are around, but you’ll have to be diplomatic if you want to make the most of them.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Taurus moon energy makes you feel even more practical than usual, which can be daunting for those around you. Go easy on them – not everyone is as efficient as you.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 With the moon moving through your domestic zone, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the company of family and friends at your Aquarian abode. But avoid stirring up trouble at work.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 The more confidently you communicate – and the more you network with family and friends – the better the day will be. Avoid letting emotional issues cloud your judgement.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Well there is not much on offer guys, so best you get on a stand-up, have a round of golf, go for a f sh or play with the kids. The other option would be Happy Valley for the beginners as it should be perfect with north winds blowing. It is even f at in Hawaii at the moment – go f gure. But not for long I would imagine. So Carlos Burle got that 100-foot monster wave in Portugal, but they still can’t decide if he broke the world record as he did get gobbled up. Either way he does have big kahunas! If you watch the footage he did not complete the ride. Laird Hamilton says it doesn’t count – I guess he has a point. But I will leave it up to you to decide. Now if you are feeling a bit bummed out by the lack of waves, hop on the net and check out the Thundercloud promo clip. Wow, there is some pretty impressive footage of Cloud Break. Oh, and if you have a spare few minutes, pray for waves!

FISHING REPORT

with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Whiting and f athead will be on the drift from the northern side of Maroochy motorway bridge to Maroochy Bar using yabbies, with the low tide concentrating f sh in the gutters. Work the areas just pumped for yabbies. Catch jew on live bait as the tide slows around bridge pylons with plastics working in all rivers on the Coast. SURF: Not as much action along the beaches as in the rivers, but the rising night tides are still producing tailor, bream and some unstoppables, using mullet f llet and pillies, with Mudjimba and Pincushion best. Head to Maroochy and Alexandra Headland beaches for whiting and dart early mornings. OFFSHORE: There are great reef f sh at present with quality mixed f sh being taken from the Barwon Banks to Murphy’s Reef. Not a lot of action between 10am and 3pm. School mackerel are off Point Cartwright. FRESHWATER: Impoundments are f ring at present with the rising barometer best. Deep divers and live shrimps are working well in Somerset, Borumba and Boondooma, but our local creeks are also f ring for bass and shallow divers and ‘poppers’ as they move down river to breed.
