elcome to the first issue of My Weekly Preview for 2014. I don’t know about you, but I have spent the past week asking, “Where did 2013 go?” We have packed away the Christmas tree and made (and broken) our resolutions, so we thought it time for a moment of ref ection. Last year f ew by, but much happened locally, nationally and internationally. We lost a prime minister, gained another one, lost him and welcomed a third into the position. Miley Cyrus taught us a new word, natural disasters (both home and overseas) destroyed lives, and the US stopped working for a while. There was corruption and high court challenges, a royal commission and a royal baby, break-ups, bomb blasts and bombshells (did any of us really expect Clive to get in?). We lost rock stars and Hollywood stars,
scientists and soldiers, the world’s oldest man and those who died far too young. Before you get stuck into 2014, we are ref ecting on 2013 with our special edition of MWP. In our cover story, over the page, we are channelling our inner glossy tabloid magazine to take a cheeky look at the what the celebrities needed to do to make news last year. We change the tone and also ref ect on the world’s bigger news stories. Over on page 28 we wrap up the year that was in national news and in agenda on page 30 we ref ect on those who have passed. Dragging ourselves back into 2014, on page 20, Sam Walker talks to some prominent locals about their hopes and dreams for the year ahead. And if you are still looking for things to see, do and eat on the Coast after Christmas and New Year, we have plenty to keep you occupied in my time on page 31.

Making headlines Tongues, tussles, break-ups and box off ce busts: it was a busy year for the world’s celebrities. AAP’s Peter Mitchell reminds us of what – and who – went down in 2013.
mini-dress after attending a Calvin Klein fashion show, she was knocked over by a pap on a bicycle in Manhattan. The pap, 19-year-old Carl Wu, ended up on his back and was slapped with three citations from the NYPD. The paps who stayed on their feet were happy because they made plenty of cash from the photos and video.
A VISIT TO SPLITSVILLE
NOT THAT TASTY In decades to come when celebrity historians look back at 2013 they will point to one standout, publicity-hogging f gure as the most talked about and inf uential of the year. Yes, you guessed it. Miley’s wild, always visible tongue had such a breakout 2013 that the US Congress, after failing to agree on anything all year, unanimously gave the green light to carving a 20-metre-tall replica of the tongue next to the heads of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and George Washington at Mount Rushmore. Cirque du Soleil is planning a new Las Vegas stage show starring a single acrobatic Miley tongue twerking to multiple versions of Achy Breaky Heart while a lookalike Liam Hemsworth frantically runs away from it. Okay so maybe that won’t happen, but Miley’s tongue did dominate the year and our grandmothers now know what twerking is. Still, plenty of other celebs put up valiant efforts in 2013 to score multiple magazine covers or grab a few lines on TMZ.com, including Aussies Miranda Kerr, Nicole Kidman and the Hemsworth boys. In 2013, celebs died. They gave birth. They split up with former loved ones. Here are the other 2013 highlights (and lowlights) in the world of Hollywood celebrities.
PEDAL POWER Nicole Kidman took the usual celebrity-paparazzi run-in to a literal level when, sporting a new hairdo and looking chic in high heels and a tight, light grey [ 12 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J AN UARY 3, 201 4

Dim the lights. Put on the sad music. The following celebrity couples didn’t remain couples in 2013. Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom proved lingerie supermodels and Lord of the Rings elves shouldn’t pursue long-term relationships. Who is to blame for the split? What day of the week is it? That little Justin Bieber fella was f rst tagged as the culprit because he stood next to Miranda after a Victoria’s Secret show. Then Leonardo DiCaprio was blamed because he, Miranda and 20 other people had dinner together in Vegas. Then James Packer was the mystery beau. The truth is Miranda is in love with me and that’s why she split with Orlando. The Biebs also split with Selena Gomez. After his recent trip to Australia, it is clear he is not lonely. Crocodile Dundee’s Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski are done after 23 years of marriage. Rumour has it when Hoges was f rst handed the divorce papers he said, “They are not divorce papers. These are divorce papers” before pulling out his own bigger wad of legal documents. Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth and former Disney darling Miley Cyrus announced in September the wedding is off and they’re going separate ways. It
came soon after Miley’s tongue became possessed by an evil spirit and she infamously twerked at the MTV Video Awards in underpants and bra. Mexican beauty Eiza González has been comforting Liam’s broken heart. Michael Douglas and Catherine ZetaJones are “taking a break” after 13 years of marriage. Rumours that the marriage went downhill after Douglas walked into the kitchen and found a rabbit boiling in a pot are not true. In keeping with tradition, after two years together George Clooney gave girlfriend, former pro wrestler Stacy Keibler, the f ick. Matriarch of the Kardashians, Kris, and former Olympic champion decathlete-turned cosmetic surgery regular Bruce Jenner, announced the end of their 22-year marriage. Surprisingly it was revealed exclusively on the cover of Us Weekly magazine. It’s hard to tell if Bruce is happy or upset. His face hasn’t moved for a couple of years. Khloé Kardashian and her NBA hoopster husband Lamar Odom were on the rocks in 2013 with reports Lamar was off on benders. Khloé removed ‘Odom’ from her Twitter name before f ling for divorce. Other casualties: Kylie Minogue and Spanish model Andres Velencoso; Madonna and Brahim Zaibat; Michelle Williams and Jason Segel; Keri Russell and Shane Deary; Malin Akerman and Roberto Zincone; Clint and Dina Eastwood; Richard Gere and Carey Lowell; Britney Spears and Jason Trawick; Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough; Rachel McAdams and Michael Sheen … must stop … running out of space.
SANE BABY NAMES In recent years it was fun laughing at the ridiculous names celebrities burdened their children with, but celebs largely went the classic route M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U
12/19/2013 12:16:51 PM
in 2013. Or what could be considered the new classic. Okay, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West named their daughter North West, ensuring plenty of endorsement deals with compass companies, but check the list below. There isn’t an Apple, Pilot Inspektor or Moon Unit to be found. Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, daughter Luna; Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez, son Maceo; Josh Duhamel and Fergie, son Axl; Channing Tatum, daughter Everly; Michael Bublé, son Noah; Alec Baldwin, daughter Carmen; Jordana Brewster, son Julian; Jamie-Lynn Sigler, son Beau; Vince Vaughn, son Vernon; Jessica Simpson, son Ace; Eva Herzigova, son Edward; Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, daughter Lincoln; Jeremy Renner, daughter Ava; rapper Wiz Khalifa, son Sebastian; Hugh Grant, son Felix; Shakira, son Milan; Elton John, son Elijah.
LINDSAY WHO? The human headline Lindsay Lohan had a reasonably quiet 2013 (though there was that incident in Miami with Paris Hilton’s brother). LiLo went to rehab a couple of times, wore a conservative dress in her interview with Oprah and looks healthy enough. The movie career isn’t going too well, but Oprah has signed LiLo to an eight-part documentary TV series.
BROWN THE BRUISER Singer Chris Brown continues to get in trouble with the law. He was sentenced to 1000 hours of community service in August after a May hit-and-run and a dispute over the community
50%
service he was supposed to serve after the assault case involving Rhianna. In October, Brown was slugged with an assault charge for an alleged incident in Washington DC.
BOX OFFICE BOOM AND BUST The box off ce winner of 2013 is Iron Man 3 with $US1.215 billion (about $1.4 billion) in theatre tickets sold worldwide. There were plenty of stinkers in cinemas, but thanks to the boom in new territories in Asia and Europe a box off ce bust in North America no longer means a movie will be a f nancial disaster for a studio. The Will and Jaden Smith sci-f After Earth was a f op in the US, but still made almost $US250 million worldwide. Johnny Depp’s The Lone Ranger cost more than $US215 million to make, earned just $US89 million in North America, but to Disney’s relief ended up with $US260 million globally. Perhaps the biggest disaster was the suitably named action f lm R.I.P.D. starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds. It had a $US130 million budget, but audiences in China, the Ukraine and Mozambique couldn’t save it, with just $US76 million in takings worldwide. AAP
On a more serious note, here are some other international news items that made headlines in this nation. JANUARY 16 – Islamists take hundreds of Algerian and foreign workers hostage at a gas site in Algeria’s remote southeastern desert. On the 19th, Algerian special forces storm the gas complex; 37 foreign hostages die in the siege and rescue operation.

He is succeeded by his hand-picked deputy, Nicolás Maduro. 13 – Jorge Mario Bergoglio, an Argentinian Jesuit, becomes the f rst pope from Latin America, choosing the name of Francis. His election follows the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. 14 – Xi Jinping becomes president of China four months after he takes charge of the Communist Party.
APRIL 15 – Two blasts near the f nish line of the Boston Marathon kill three people and wound more than 100. Two brothers of Chechen origin, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, are hunted and Tamerlan dies later in a shootout with police. Dzhokhar is arrested. 24 – The collapse of the Rana Plaza garment factory complex in Bangladesh kills 1129 people and injures thousands.
JUNE 15 – Moderate cleric Hassan Rouhani is elected president of Iran, ending eight years in power continued over >

LEADERS LOOK TO 2014
Some of the Coast’s leaders talk to MWP about their hopes and predictions for the region in the year ahead.
The Council: Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says economic numbers and statistics are important, but it’s people who count the most. “I can roll off many f gures outlining my hopes and predictions for what could and should happen
in the Coast economy in 2014, but these numbers only ref ect what is happening to and for those who live here,” Jamieson tells MWP. “The most important thing for 2014 and beyond, here on the Sunshine Coast, is that the people who live here are given enough opportunities to gain meaningful work, to build a career, to earn an appropriate income, to run a business if they wish, to live in a safe place, to give their kids an opportunity to learn, earn and remain close to their families, for all to be able to enjoy time with their families and friends, and to appreciate the beauty of this place, which we call home. “I want everyone here to be able to live with dignity and purpose; something that is not freely available to all of us here on the Coast at present.”

Tourism: Simon Ambrose, Sunshine Coast Destination CEO “In 2014, we will continue to experience fundamental changes in visitor behaviour, booking and travel patterns,” says Sunshine Coast Destination CEO Simon Ambrose. “The tourism businesses that have embraced the new digital and online environment and adapted their distribution channels accordingly will continue to prosper, grow and reap the rewards. This will be a driving force at Sunshine Coast Destination with the development of a new

When a tooth is missing the adjacent teeth can drift into this space making a one tooth solution very difficult. With the introduction of flexible dentures, nobody has to know that you are missing teeth. We can offer this solution for singular or multiple teeth. No surgical procedure is required for the construction of this flexible denture and it can be quite small and discreet. They actually blend in with your natural dentition so that it appears invisible in your mouth. The Flexibility of the partial allows
the denture to adapt to the surrounding teeth in the mouth. This is the underlying thinking behind a flexible, removable partial denture. The flexibility, combined with strength and light weight, provides total comfort and great looks! If you are in a private health fund you may be able to claim a portion of the cost. Why not give us a call today to organise a Free Consultation to see if this solution will work best for you. We also do Repairs while U Wait, New Dentures, Same day relines & Acrylic & Metal Partial dentures.

Education: University of the Sunshine Coast Professor Greg Hill, Vice-Chancellor USC’s Greg Hill says, “2014 will be a very important year for the Sunshine Coast, so let me begin by wishing all a prosperous 12 months ahead. “Of key importance to the region will be the development of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital – a massive project that will provide substantial economic impetus both during and after its construction phase. “The University of the Sunshine Coast, with its strong focus on allied health programs like nursing science,
paramedic science, occupational therapy, psychology and social work, is taking a keen interest in the new hospital. “We want to make the most of the learning and teaching opportunities that will come from having a major facility like this nearby that will employ many of our graduates and help boost our research capacity. USC is also expanding into other f elds in 2014, with our new degrees in law and creative industries. “Work will soon be complete on our $25 million Sippy Downs Learning Hub, a three-storey building that will provide for advanced simulation-based learning labs and e-learning facilities. And construction will begin soon on our $37 million Engineering Hub that will house some impressive design and construction technology. “But despite the planned rapid growth, USC will continue to concentrate on providing the high-quality learning and teaching that has earned us national recognition.”
Business: Sandy Zubrinich, Sunshine Coast Business Council chair While 2013 proved to be another tough year for Coast businesses, Sandy Zubrinich anticipates 2014 will fare better with indications the region’s traditional industries of construction, tourism and retail are recovering, albeit at a slow pace. “Consumer conf dence certainly lifted in 2013, however, business conf dence was slower to respond. We need interest rates to remain low to give business owners the time to respond, consolidate and to start reinvesting in their businesses.
“With federal and local elections and the ongoing debate on de-amalgamation behind us, 2014 needs to be the year of infrastructure delivery for the Sunshine Coast. Our hope is that funding will f ow from federal and state governments for a Bruce Highway upgrade and that [the] council will make major advancements in the Sunshine Coast Airport upgrade and the Maroochydore Principal Activity Centre at Horton Park. “The region’s biggest infrastructure project, the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital, will be in full-scale construction mode and the adjacent private hospital will be receiving its f rst patients -– both important milestones in the Coast’s burgeoning health industry and very positive in regard to job creation.” Zubrinich says a clear economic direction has been agreed by government, business and the community and she hopes to see a focus on implementing the regional economic development strategy, and more prosperity for the region.

ontinuing our review of 2013 and what we might expect for 2014, we look at the reasons for the increased interest in yieldbased investments over the past 12 months. One of the key drivers in the hunt for yield has been an environment of record low interest rates, which has been forcing investors who need income to search elsewhere for returns. Adding fuel to this shift away from cash and term deposits has been an increased appetite for risk as concerns of a global economic meltdown have receded. As a result, prices of assets with superior yields such as shares, property and infrastructure have all increased substantially. This has manifested itself most clearly in the prices of Australian banks and blue-chip stocks with high fully franked yields, such as Telstra. Demographics and the ageing population are also partially responsible for the focus on yield. The move of baby boomers into retirement mode has driven the demand for investments that pay an income, whether that is interest, dividends or rent. We have seen the decision investors must make as term
deposit rates fall to less than four per cent, with the yield on shares more attractive at anywhere from f ve to 10 per cent inclusive of franking. As investors are now prepared to take on even more risk, the emphasis is shifting to assets that are likely to show the potential for capital growth, which is fairly typical of the early stages of a market recovery. This raises the question of whether the rise in asset prices has gone too far. With forward price/ earnings multiples of Australian shares at around long-term averages and still below global shares, one would suspect that the market is not overstretched. This does not mean it cannot fall in the short term, however, asset prices do not look extreme. With low inf ation worldwide, tightening monetary policy may also be some time off, which is a positive for shares and property. In summary, we do not see a case for an exodus from shares and property into cash and f xed interest, although growth in the future may well be at a more moderate rate. Super inequity for Australian women The average 60-year-old Australian woman will need to work an extra 25 years in order to retire with the same superannuation account balance as her male counterpart. The startling statistic was released in the Westpac Women & Retirement Readiness Report last month, which shows a $121,200 gap between the median super account balance for women and men. “Both men and women should try to do more now in preparation for their life beyond work, however, we know that women, as primary carers, take career breaks, receive less pay than men and often return to work in a part-time capacity,” says Westpac’s director of Women’s Markets, Larke Riemer. “These are unique issues women face when it comes to preparing for their retirement, so taking action and starting early is essential.” She advises women aged 40 to 65 to be clear about retirement goals, establish a budget to support retirement, retire your debt before you retire, explore tax benef ts and identify ways to build wealth.

NEW YEAR, NEW START
N
avigating the relationship minefield can be incredibly tricky and wonderfully rewarding. Most of us have the odd moments of confusion and misunderstanding along the way, creating the occasional bump in an otherwise happy partnership. Here are some suggestions to make sure your relationship stays on track in 2014.
1. Know your partner’s goals. Sit down and talk about both your goals for the new year. Get on the same page about where you want to be in 10 or 20 years. When you know you are working towards the same things, you’ll feel happier and more secure.
2. Make sure you respect your partner’s values. This is where differences can create problems in a relationship. You can have differing political opinions or religious beliefs, but nothing will push you further apart than feeling like your values are being dismissed.
3. Get rid of petty resentments. So your mate is messy or never f lls up the car with petrol? Look, we’re all human. Think about it. Even at your most perfect, no doubt
you have an annoying f aw or two. Drop your grudge and move on.
4. Stop trying to change your partner. Expecting your partner to change lifelong behaviours will lead you down a fruitless path. But you can help your partner make some improvements if you ask in the right way. If you let your signif cant other know that you would feel closer to him or her and would be willing to reciprocate, it can make that person want to move mountains.
5. Know your partner’s communication style. If your partner is more of a visual communicator, make sure you talk face to face. If your other half is a talker, learn to listen better. If your mate is an emotional communicator, it will help to hold hands and speak softly.
6. Find a middle ground. You may not always see eye to eye, but you can dance cheek to cheek your whole life if you learn to compromise. If you both accept that you won’t get everything you want and that giving up a little isn’t the same as giving in, you will get along much better.

If you’re not getting along at the moment, remember that you have done it before and you will do it again. You have grown with your partner and are better for it.
8. Take responsibility for your behaviour. If you have crossed a line, admit it. If you have said something hurtful, apologise, and if you know that you are wrong, say so. AAP

WHAT MADE HEADLINES IN 2013 January
Michael Hussey started the year by retiring from Test cricket and Tony Greig, who died on December 29 2012 was honoured with minute’s silence on f rst day of Test at SCG. On January 4 Australia’s southern states sweltered though a record-setting heatwave. Later in the month Cyclone Oswald hit north Queensland, with six people dying in f oods that left more than 2300 homes uninhabitable. Whitehaven Coal had a bad start to the year – $314 million was wiped off its share price following a hoax media release by anti-coal campaigners. Olympian Nova Peris parachuted into the top spot on the Labor NT Senate ticket, at the expense of Trish Crossin. Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced that the 2013 federal election would be held on September 14.
February
Former NSW Labor minister Eddie Obeid appeared before the Independent Commission Against Corruption while federal MP Craig Thomson faced 154 charges of fraud. The Australian Crime Commission found widespread use of banned drugs in sport, linked with organised crime. Greens leader Christine Milne announced the end of her party’s alliance with the Labor Government, and the Act of Recognition of indigenous people was created on the f fth anniversary of stolen generation apology.
March
Victorian premier Ted Baillieu was replaced by Denis Napthine, and NT Chief Minister Terry Mills was rolled by Adam Giles, giving Australia its f rst indigenous head of government. On March 21, Gillard made the national
apology to victims of forced adoption, declared the leadership tussles over and withdrew her four media bills. Later in the month the government proposed a crackdown on gambling advertising and live-odds betting during live sports broadcasts. The month ended with an Australian entertainer, later named by media as Rolf Harris, arrested in Britain regarding historical allegations of sexual offences.
April
The royal commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse got underway in Melbourne in April, and the government announced superannuation changes impacting those with super assets of more than $2 million. Champion mare Black Caviar retired, NSW was the f rst state to sign onto the schools funding agreement with the commonwealth and John Singleton fell out with Gai Waterhouse. In Britain, it was revealed that nurse Jacintha Saldanha left a note saying the hoax call of two Australian DJs led to her death.
May
The Medicare levy was increased by 0.5 per cent to pay for DisabilityCare Australia. The government tried to reassure Australians that the new ASIO headquarters was secure, rejecting claims it had been compromised by Chinese hackers. A teenage Magpies’ fan called Adam Goodes an “ape”. She later apologised and Collingwood president Eddie McGuire also apologised but days later he suggested Goodes promote the King Kong musical.
June
In Brisbane, a 60-year-old man died from legionnaires’ disease, sparking a legionnaires’ scare, and former premier Anna Bligh revealed she had non-Hodgkin lymphoma. A Liberal fundraising menu denigrating Gillard was condemned and Adrian Ernest Bayley was jailed for life for the rape and murder of Jill Meagher. Gillard was toppled as Kevin Rudd won the leadership vote 57 to 45.
July
Australia and PNG signed an agreement to allow resettlement of asylum seekers in PNG under a
regional arrangement but days later an asylum seeker boat capsized off Java, with 11 bodies recovered and 189 people rescued. The Coalition then unveiled its border protection plan. ICAC recommended criminal charges against Labor f gures Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald over corruption allegations.
August
Quakers Hill nursing home murderer Roger Dean was sentenced to life for the murders of 11 elderly residents in a f re. Rudd announced a new date for the election – September 7 – and the off cial interest rates dropped to the lowest in Australian history at 2.5 per cent.
September
Tony Abbott became prime minister after Labor was dumped in federal election. Rudd then quit as Labor leader.
October
Bill Shorten took the helm at Labor and Tanya Plibersek was made his deputy before the worst bushf res since the 1960s hit NSW, mostly in the Blue Mountains, where more than 200 properties were destroyed. During the crisis one life was lost. The ACT passed same-sex marriage laws that were immediately challenged by the commonwealth.
November
Trainer Gai Waterhouse f nally won the Melbourne Cup, with Fiorente. Qantas’ heavy maintenance base at Avalon closed with the loss of 300 jobs and 66 Australians were arrested as part of a global pornography ring. Australian and Indonesian relations were soured when it was revealed Australia spied on Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, his wife, and eight others, in 2009. Treasurer Joe Hockey blocked the Archer Daniels Midland takeover of GrainCorp.
December
Qantas announced at least 1000 job cuts after forecasting a $300 million half-yearly loss. Holden announced it would stop manufacturing in Australia in 2017 and the High Court struck down the ACT’s same-sex marriage laws. AAP & MWP

MAKE/MODEL BMW Z4 SDRIVE28i DETAILS Two-door, two-seat convertible sports car with four-cylinder, turbo-charged engine and eight-speed automatic transmission.
FUN MACHINE
TECH STUFF 2-litre, 4-cylinder, 16-valve petrol engine with twin-scroll turbocharger with valvetronic, double-VANOS and highprecision fuel injection produces 180 kilowatts at 5000-6000rpm; 350Nm at 1500-4800rpm. t’s amazing how time flies when you’re having fun. Maybe that explains why, in what seems like the blink of an eye, one of the world’s true fun machines has suddenly reached middle age. BMW’s Z4 f nds itself almost f ve years into its second-generation model and on the verge of a midlife crisis, requiring another dose of automotive Botox to keep it relevant in the industry’s most f ckle segment. The Z4 is part of a fairly proud tradition at BMW, stretching back to the 1930s when the German maker f rst started turning out its beautiful roadsters. The Z-family has been around since 1987, when the Z1 stunned the Frankfurt Motor Show, and it’s been a constant evolution since then. Two-door, two-seat roadsters are
fashion items and it’s vital to keep up with the fashion. So it is with the Z4, now more than a decade since its launch and f ve years since the second generation was unveiled, much closer to the end of its model life than the beginning.
FEATURES Front and side driver and passenger airbags, rollover safety system; Dynamic Driving Control with dynamic traction control, ABS with cornering brake control; bi-Xenon headlights, central locking; park distance control; automatic headlights and wipers; satellite navigation.
It remains a compelling, delightful thing, mind you. And a handful of recent tweaks by the BMW engineers have given it a fresh blush of youth. As well as some cosmetic freshen-ups, BMW has thrown in several thousand Continued page 36 >

<from page 34 dollars worth of standard kit previously offered as options to sweeten the deal. Up against a newer, slightly better rival in the Mercedes-Benz SLK, the Z4 still appeals for those lucky enough to be shopping for an $80,000-plus machine – albeit one with room for two, at best. It’s a car for singles and emptynesters only – wealthy ones at that. We drove the mid-range, clumsilynamed Z4 sDrive28i, essentially a two-litre, turbo-charged four-cylinder version which manages surprising potency from its modestly sized engine. It will cost you north of $90,000, comparable to the equivalent, but slightly less powerful Mercedes SLK 250. The Z4 offers an entry-level sDrive20i model, using the same turbo four as our test car but detuned to produce 135kW and 270Nm, priced from $79,900. There’s also a hard-core, twin-turbo six-cylinder version costing more than $110K. But for that money you’d be better off with a Porsche Boxster anyway.
For those seeking driving fun, rather than hard-edged performance, this Z4 28i f ts the bill nicely, particularly with the growing list of goodies included in this latest model. The eight-speed sports automatic, previously a $3500 option, is now standard across the Z4 range, as is BMW’s professional navigation system, featuring an 8.8-inch colour display with internet functionality, Bluetooth audio streaming and voice control. Step up from the base model to the 28i and you’ll also get 18-inch alloys, sports seats and gearshift paddles – plus a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.5 seconds – for an additional outlay of $10-grand. BMW has also rolled out a series of option packages for the Z4, including an M-Sport package and two other choices called Design Pure Balance and Design Pure Traction. The balance kit includes sports seats, anthracite wood trim and special
giving more than adequate power while helping keep the car’s weight to a minimum. That means a car that will rocket away from the lights but remains beautifully nimble and balanced through the twisty stuff. The eight-speed auto is a beauty. As you might imagine, with eight ratios to choose from the engine is rarely out of its sweet spot, and gear changes are lightning fast. The steel roof is a major upgrade on the previous Z4, which offered only a cloth-top that didn’t do nearly as good a job keeping out the elements. Comfort-wise, the cockpit delivers a compact, cossetting experience. Everything is driver-focused and within easy reach and, although it is starting to look slightly dated, the cabin presentation remains functional, classy and stylish. So a car that had its shortcomings 10 years ago has, in its later years, become better than ever with more power, more practicality and more value. Who says things don’t get better with age?
leather upholstery; the traction version offers Alcantara leather on seats, doors and dashboard. Personally I’d opt for the M-Sport pack that adds upgraded wheels and tyres, M-Sport seats and steering wheel and stiffer
With eight ratios to choose from the engine is rarely out of its sweet spot and gear changes are lightning fast suspension. However, it also includes aluminium trim on the interior that tends to dazzle when the roof’s down in strong sunlight. Mechanically, the Z4 remains relatively unchanged, although it’s barely a year since the cracking turbo-charged engine gave the model a massive shot in the arm. Punchy, responsive and with a glorious exhaust note, this force-fed four has really transformed the Z4,

Catch him if you can: Leonardo DiCaprio is getting into the electric race-car business. The Oscar-nominated actor has announced he’s partnering with Venturi Automobiles and will enter a team in the FIA Formula E Championship, which is the f rst series exclusively for electric cars. The DiCaprio-backed entry is the tenth and f nal entrant for the open-wheel series set to launch next year. “The future of our planet depends on our ability to embrace fuel-eff cient, clean-energy vehicles,” DiCaprio says in a statement. “Venturi Grand Prix has shown tremendous foresight in their decision to create an environmentally friendly racing team, and I am happy to be a part of this effort.” Alejandro Agag, CEO of series promoter Formula E Holdings, welcomes DiCaprio to the series. “Very few environmental leaders have helped more than him to spread the message of sustainability around the world,” Agag says. “Having people like him and Richard Branson – global ambassadors for the environment

So you’re thinking of… It’s the f rst week in January, which means it’s time for New Year’s resolutions. If your goals for 2014 involve property – whether it’s buying, selling or investing – you’ll need to put some plans in place. Here’s a checklist to get you started.
BUYING
SELLING
INVESTING
BUYING
many eyeballs as possible. Make sure your agent has a clear marketing plan in place, including signage and brochures, an online listing on their website and high-quality print advertising.
Start saving Lenders have tightened their deposit requirements over the past 12 months, meaning you’ll need to have some cold, hard cash before you can buy your f rst property. Your bank will look for evidence of genuine savings over at least a six-month period, so devise a personal budget and start putting money aside now.
INVESTING Be detached Buying an investment property is different to buying a home: you’re purchasing for f nancial reasons rather than personal ones, so you need to be quite detached when choosing a property. The idea is to maximise your potential rental return, so it doesn’t matter whether you like the decor in the bathroom – try to look at the property’s location, layout and features from a tenant’s perspective.
Set a limit Your bank will have the f nal say on how much you can spend, but even if it is willing to lend you more than you expected, it’s not necessarily a good idea to stretch yourself on your f rst property. Calculate the repayments on different loans and see what you’re comfortable with, taking into account future events like income changes or interest rate rises.
Narrow it down Make a checklist of wants and needs for your new home. Are you looking for a unit or a detached house? Close to schools or the beach? How many bedrooms? Are you willing to sacrif ce a big yard or a state-of-the-art kitchen for a more affordable price? Remember, your f rst home is supposed to be a stepping stone, so start with the bare minimum and work your way up, as your budget allows. Then, happy house hunting!
SELLING Choose an agent Your agent will represent your property to potential buyers, so it’s important to choose someone who is experienced and professional. Look for an agent with a friendly, approachable manner, but remember personality isn’t everything – you want someone who will be honest with you about buyer feedback and whose advice you can trust. Do your homework
Great expectations The hard truth is that your property is worth only what a buyer is willing to pay for it – not how much you paid, how much you’ve spent on renovations or simply how much you want. Ask your agent how much comparable properties in your area have recently sold for, as this will give you an indication of what your home may be worth to the current market.
To market, to market To secure a sale in the shortest amount of time, you’ll need to put your property in front of as
Purchasing and owning an investment property will have f nancial implications, so be sure to speak to your accountant and solicitor before signing anything. You don’t want to end up with a massive tax liability that could have been avoided by making a quick phone call to a professional.
Manage it right When it’s time to tenant your property, spare yourself the hassle of dealing with applications and legislation – appoint a professional property manager to handle it for you. Look for someone who is well respected within the industry and knows the process well, and their fees will be well worth the time (and stress) they save you. Also consider a landlord insurance policy for added peace of mind. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Saturday suits group activities. On Sunday, if you have a problem that’s bothering you, look within for the answers you require. Your intuition will lead you in the right direction.
TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Are you confused about your direction in 2014? Try turning to an older friend or family member for advice and calm reassurance. Remember – a problem shared is a problem halved.
GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 The buzz word for twins now is communication, as you aim to get your message out loud and clear. When it comes to a work colleague, avoid making assumptions that aren’t based on reality.
CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Think before you speak, otherwise you are likely to say the wrong thing to the wrong person, at the wrong time. Channel your creative crab energy into joint projects.
LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Avoid saying the first thing that comes into your head this weekend. A sensitive and tactful approach is required if you want to avoid problems with a stressed family member.
VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 With four planets powering through your children zone, it’s time to have more holiday fun with the kids in your life as you explore new sports, hobbies or creative activities together.
LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 The moon joins up with Neptune so you’re eager to please, and are in the mood to help others. But don’t take on too much and end up confused about what you are actually achieving.
SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 A domestic matter requires a disciplined approach. Get the facts before you believe everything a child or friend tells you. With a cool head, you’ll steer your way through any problems.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Being boisterous won’t be appreciated by others this weekend. Try a more subtle approach instead. When it comes to financial matters, it’s time to pay bills and tidy up paperwork.
CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Clear communication is the secret to a successful weekend. If you are too abrupt or vague then it will cause problems. Escape into another world via a favourite book or movie.
AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 You’re keen to help others this weekend, but don’t get carried away and promise more than you can deliver. When it comes to health and diet, tune into what your body is asking for.
PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 On Sunday, don’t get carried away with wild imaginings that have no basis in reality. The key to keeping relationships on track is to communicate clearly and keep things real.
