s I write this, my moonbootensconsed right leg is resting on the desk – it’s a good look, very professional. Why, do you ask, am I sporting this new fashion accessory? Well, I broke my foot over the holidays and had to have surgery last week. I have been in something of a postoperative pixie land ever since, so damn it, I can put my foot anywhere I please. Anyway, apologies for any errors that appear in the magazine this week – we can blame the Panadeine Forte. So where am I going with this? Oh yeah. What has struck me since I hurt myself is just how nice people are. The wonderful Jarna Baudinette did all my work and her own last week in an effort to get last issue’s magazine to press on time. This Australia Day weekend, Dorothy Drane ref ects on what the day meant to Sunshine Coast beach-goers back in the ’70s and ’80s.

T

hink iconic images of Australia and you’ll probably imagine golden beaches, red outback roads, blue skies, kookaburras, all manner of marsupials – and surf lifesaving. And it was precisely the latter that put the ‘Australia’ into Australia Day on the Sunshine Coast in the days before ‘oi oi oi’, green and gold, parades and formal ceremonies. During the 1970s and ’80s, the Sunshine Coast’s Australia Day memories were made at Maroochydore Beach. This was a time when ‘tent city’ sprung up on the foreshores from Cotton Tree right along Alexandra Parade to south of the Mooloolaba surf club, so there was no public space on the beachfront from mid-December to the end of January. The crowds created a lively holiday atmosphere on the beach by day and at the Alexandra Headland surf club dance by night. Big old roadside mango trees dropped their fruit for anyone going by to pick up and Australia Day was always on a Monday, the last long weekend before school returned and the new year off cially got underway. It marked the end of the summer holidays when the campers packed up and tent city turned back into a quiet, grassy beachfront until next December. All that changed in 1994, when the Federal Government declared all states and territories would celebrate Australia Day on January 26, regardless of the day of the week.

That was the end of the Australia Day long weekend. A January 26 holiday for the day that the First Fleet arrived at Sydney Cove in 1788 brought with it a new sense of nationalism celebrated with citizenship ceremonies, parades and f reworks in cities and towns across the nation. While some communities, most notably Buderim, had been celebrating Australia Day before the bicentenary celebrations of 1988, the impetus really began to build after the nation’s year-long 200th birthday party. But before all that it was the Maroochydore Surf Club that put Australia Day into the Sunshine Coast diary. In 1978, it staged a surf carnival that would become the biggest club-run event in Australia and one that soon had visitors f ocking to the beach to celebrate Australia Day in the surf and sand. The concept had its roots in the Peter Shearer Carnival that the club had been hosting since 1967. In the late 1970s Maroochydore, keen to win the Australian surf lifesaving championships, knew it had to prove itself and do better. “We had to show them we could do it,” says Kerry Taylor who, with Bard Claffey, Mal Pratt,

and Ralph Devlin, put together what was to become the f rst East-West Carnival that not only won them the 1980 national titles but also gave the Sunshine Coast a way to celebrate Australia Day. “The Peter Shearer carnival came f rst but it really wasn’t in the same league as what was to follow,” Pratt, who was born in Nambour, grew up in Duporth Avenue and joined the surf club in 1963, tells MWP. Taylor says the East-West Carnival was special

because it was designed to be a spectacle, a program designed specif cally to attract spectators. Until then, surf carnivals had been all about competitors and off cials. “We planned to make this an event for spectators, a public event,” Taylor says. “We would run all the heats on a Saturday and then the f nals of 10 major events would be at specif ed times between 10.30am and 2pm on Sunday and we would advertise it as that. “We could say that this race would be on at M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

10.35am or that race would be at 12.40pm and the public loved it. If they wanted to watch the surf boats race, they could come at 1pm and watch it. We slotted all the f nals and we started on time.” They would also bring the crème de la crème of surf lifesaving, the high-prof le champions from the previous season, to compete so that spectators could see the big names in action. This meant f nding a sponsor. “We needed to talk to someone who wanted to sell themselves on the coast,” says Pratt. “East-West Airlines had just started f ying into Maroochy so in 1977, Ralph and I went to Sydney to talk to them. “We knew we could only get the public’s attention for a couple of hours so we had to condense a surf carnival into 10 major events. East-West gave us 10 free air tickets and a large sum of money for prizes so we could attract the best and bring them in.”

On the Australia Day long weekend in 1978, the f rst East-West Carnival, one of the best organised carnivals ever, was held on the beach in front of the Maroochydore Surf Club, a natural amphitheatre. A march past along with the big-name ironmen, the thrills and spills of the surfboats and the craft races all in the space of a few hours turned the beach into an entertainment venue. And the crowds came. In the years that followed, up to 10,000 people would jam on the beach to watch the East-West Carnival, the big event of the Australia Day weekend. “Standing out the front of the clubhouse you would see the people coming up the street in droves,” Pratt says. “We raised the Australian f ag on the beach. We had a pipe band that played Waltzing Matilda and we had a march past, so that was Australia Day. “It was very moving for the people there. Everyone stood up on the beach for the anthem.

It made you feel proud to be an Australian.” As the carnival became an iconic Australia Day activity, Taylor, who managed the event, took calls from all over the country as reporters eager to know the results and how the day was progressing. “This was the heyday for competitors, the big names – Grant Kenny, Trevor Hendy, the Mercer brothers – they were continued over>

all household names and people wanted to see them in action,” he tells MWP. “Being in late January it was before the Queensland and Australian championships so it was very well placed on the calendar. We would get TV coverage for 90 minutes. Even the Aus championships struggled to get that. “To my amazement it worked. It has not happened before or since. Our Australia Day carnival was a winner.” Taylor says that in the beginning organisers had to work to lure the big names to attend, but within a few years they had the elite competitors asking for an invitation, drawn by the standard of the competition, the atmosphere and the prize money. “Maroochydore was where you came to play to a packed audience. It grew very well. And we showed them that we were capable of running a big carnival,” he says. “It was an event that f tted with Australia Day, what Australia is all about.” Up to 60 clubs, mostly from around Queensland but also a lot from NSW, came to take part. As the

The East-West Carnival was held every year from 1978 to 2000. In later years it was called the Just Jeans Classic. Up to 60 clubs from Queensland and NSW took part. Most years there were more than 10,000 spectators.

carnival continued through the 1980s, sponsorship changed as television stations Sun 10, Sun 60 took it in, followed by Just Jeans in the 1990s. Sadly, it all came to an end in 2000. There were two major factors working against it, the biggest being that the Maroochy River mouth had shifted to the south of Pincushion Island. The sand washed away from Maroochydore Beach which was so eroded there was nowhere for events, much less the spectators. “There was nowhere for people to go,” Taylor says. “It was four or f ve years before we got the beach back and by then it was hard to f nd a major sponsor. This and the fact that Australia Day was no longer a long weekend killed it off.” Maroochydore surf club historian Peter Rigby says the next milestone for the club is coming up in two years. “On January 1, 1916, they put a reel on Maroochydore Beach for the f rst time,” he says. “They also sold land at Cotton Tree for the f rst time that year, so 2016 will be quite a celebration.”

Buderim celebrates Australia Day

A

$450,000 prize pool is attracting Australia Day crowds to the Sunshine Coast Cup Race Day this weekend. The event, sponsored by the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce for the second year, is a metropolitan designated race meeting with a full eight-race program to run on Sunday afternoon. The highlight of the day will be the running of the $100,000 Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Sunshine Coast Cup. Caloundra Chamber of Commerce tourism and events chair Bill Darby says the race day is a great family day out. “Picnic races are very popular out in the bush,” Darby says. “It’s a day the whole community gets together and enjoys socialising in the great outdoors. “Picnic blankets and food hampers will cover the turf club lawns on Australia Day. We’ve got free kids rides, jumping castles and a great day of racing planned and it’s affordable for everyone.” Darby says accommodation bookings for the long weekend are strong with Caloundra very much an event-focussed region. “Long weekends are a boon for tourism,” he says. “It does make a difference if the public holiday is attached to the weekend.”

Games are on the cards at Buderim’s Australia Day celebrations this weekend. Aimed at the young and the young at heart, the games day, hosted by Fusion Sunshine Coast, will include traditional favourites as well as some new additions. Other highlights of the day include an ecumenical service, opening ceremony, f ag raising, welcome to country as well as the Lions breakfast, musical entertainment and food stalls. Fusion Sunshine Coast team leader Jesse O’Neil says organisers are looking forward to running the activities on the Buderim Mountain State School oval. “Australia Day is such an important day in our annual calendar and it’s important that children are a key focus,” O’Neil says. The games will include old favourites such as egg and spoon races, sack races and tug-of-war as well as water balloon volleyball and spinning plates. Buderim War Memorial Community Association Australia Day committee chair Meg Scott says this year’s celebrations are an alternative to the traditional march and are a way of weatherproof ng the event. “Rain or shine all the activities will go ahead, with any outdoor activities moving indoors in the event of rain,” Scott says.

Award winning business iness woman Melanie Summer will finish her EMBA A studies early in 2014. Owner and director of Flash Fotos which has been operating since 2005, Melanie comments that, “The EMBA program has expanded panded my knowledge of business to a deeper level. vel. I’ve particularly enjoyed the fact that I could focus cus all my University assignments on my own wn business. It’s been like having a consultant to my business across the many various aspects of its operation. peration. The EMBA program has enabled me to fully review, view, grow and develop my business. The fact that I had not previously studied at tertiary level has not been a problem andd the program delivery mode of one weekend per month has as allowed me to work full-time while studying.” Melanie Summer was a National winner of the Telstra Small Businesss Awards in 2011.

Google Drive: Business app

With the continued growth of mobile devices, let’s take a look at a productive and effective app for the business sector. We are all familiar with Google as a search engine but did you know if you have a Google email address you also have access to Google Drive? The Google Drive app lets you create and store documents in the Cloud. But it is the ability to collaborate with other work colleagues where this app shines. Conduct interviews, surveys or plan a proposal together, all in real time. By creating Google Docs you can access all the information in one place on any device. Don’t have internet access? No problem. Google Drive lets you work off ine. Combine this with the capability to upload photos and videos (and share) from your mobile device to the Cloud and you have an app that any employer or employee can benef t from. The Google Drive app, available for IOS and Android, is free. Paul Hamilton is the Primary ICT Co-ordinator at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. You can follow Paul on twitter @PaulHamilton8 or Facebook www.facebook.com/ Appsbypaulhamilton.

Bits and bytes The advent of the smartphone means most people carry a digital camera in their pocket, ready to capture life’s minutiae at any moment. The problem is the photos are stuck in digital limbo. Enter the Instax Share SP-1 by Fujif lm – a portable batterypowered printer that takes your digital pictures and turns them into tangible instant photos, as if they’d just popped out of a Polaroid camera. In a way, they have. The p y, credit card-sized f lm as Fujif lm’s popular Instax Mini printer uses the same g glossy, instant cameras, on which an imag image develops before your eyes in about 15 seconds. But Bu the printer has several advantages. It can print several identical copies of the one picture. You can also sev edit before you print – from black and white f lters to ed customisable templates which include the date, time, cu we weather, temperature and humidity. It’s all controlled via Fujif lm’s dedicated Instax photo ph app, which is available as a free download on iPh iPhone and Android. The printer will be available in Australia Au from April, but Fujif lm has not determined GOOGLE IMAGES ho much it will cost here. how AAP

MESSAGES PROVE LUCRATIVE Instant messaging services on mobile phones are likely to carry more than twice the number of messages sent by text in 2014, according to global predictions by Deloitte. As 50 billion instant messages are set to be dispatched, 21 billion text messages are expected to be sent – a rapid lift from 2012, when 11 instant messages were sent for every 10 texts, the f rm said. While instant messaging services – such as WhatsApp and Snapchat – may win the battle for volume this year, text messaging will be victorious in revenue terms, according to the technology report, launched last week. Text messaging is expected to continue generating signif cantly greater revenues until 2018, when global text message revenues are expected to start falling. Deloitte expects instant messaging services on mobile phones to continue to supersede all forms of communication, including text

TURNBULL BACKLASH

AAP

C

ommunications Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s attempt to host a Q&A on Facebook last week backfired spectacularly, with the session dominated by internet users furious with the Coalition’s NBN policy. In America on a study trip to meet with technology f rms, Turnbull hosted the session on his off cial Facebook page from the online social network giant’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California. Within minutes the Q&A was swamped by people demanding answers from Turnbull in relation to the national broadband network, which were, by and large, the comments most highly ‘Liked’ by other Facebook users. The Coalition not only scrapped Labor’s plan to roll out a f bre-to-the-home network across the country, but late last year revealed it would break its election promise of delivering 25 megabits per second (Mbps) broadband

to all Australians by 2016. Instead, the Coalition will favour the slower but less expensive f bre-to-the-node model, which relies on ageing copper wires instead of f bre-optic cables. The Q&A session lasted just 15 minutes. The top comment in the post Turnbull created to announce the 15-minute session was over read: “Fizzer of a stunt Malcolm, very disappointed in your handling of and plans for the NBN.” About half of Turnbull’s answers – however brief – were in relation to the NBN. AAP

Evidence given by 1000 victims More than 1000 victims of child sex abuse have given evidence to a royal commission during its first year of operation. Victims were mainly men, now aged between 50 and 69, and abuse occurred predominantly in children’s homes, 70 per cent of which were run by religious groups, statistics from the commission show. Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse chief Janette Dines says testimony from courageous victims provided information that would usually be diff cult to obtain. “For example, commissioners have heard in private sessions that sexual abuse is often accompanied

by serious physical abuse, particularly when that abuse occurred decades ago,” Dines says. “Other similarities include a generally stated dissatisfaction with the criminal justice system and the anguish felt by many victims that despite attempts to disclose the abuse at the time it occurred, they were not believed.” The commission was established on January 11, 2013 and private hearings began in May. The f rst public hearing was held in Brisbane in September and more than 80 witnesses have spoken. The commission expects to hold 21 weeks of public hearing this year. AAP

Australians upbeat about economy Australians are more upbeat about the state of the economy but less optimistic about their personal finances in 2014. Two-thirds of Australians believe the economy is in a strong position this year, according to the annual Westpac Australia Day Index released on Monday. The survey of 1035 Australians shows national economic positivity is up but a third feel personal f naces are out of control. AAP

BAO BAO MEETS PUBLIC

B

aby panda Bao Bao, born in captivity a little less than five months ago, has made her first public appearance at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington. Last weekend scores of people queued from as early as 6am to see Bao Bao, born of the giant panda Mei Xiang, which had previously

made several unsuccessful attempts to conceive a cub. Since 2005, the Washington zoo had not seen the successful birth of a panda, so the newcomer is attracting crowds and has led to visiting hours being extended. Bao Bao was born on August 23, now weighs nine kilograms and is very healthy despite the frosty temperatures in the US capital. The artif cial habitat of pandas in the National Zoo has been closed to the public for six months, and a lot of fans waited impatiently for it to reopen. The natural habitat of giant pandas is in the mountains and leafy bamboo groves of central China, where an estimated 1600 still live. Another 300 live in captivity in zoos around the world. Scientists believe pandas live longer in captivity but are less fertile, making the success rate for the conception of cubs lower than it is in the wild. AAP

Teenage blues are serious Life events like divorce can trigger the teenage blues, but many grow out of their problems by the time they reach their 20s.

P

arents should take the teenage blues seriously, says a scientist who has tracked the mental health of almost 2000 adolescents for 14 years. About half of boys and two-thirds of girls who experience mental health problems in adolescence continue to have issues in their 20s, he says. However, those who have a single episode that lasts six months or less are unlikely to have problems later in life. “There is no doubt that adolescence is a high-risk phase for the onset of common mental disorders,” says researcher Professor George Patton of the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Melbourne. Persistent unhappiness, moodiness, anxiety and a loss of interest in friends, pastimes or

school work are warning signs. “Parents should create an opportunity to talk to their children if it lasts longer than a week. The worst thing they can do is ignore it or criticise it,” Patton says. “Clearly, when problems persist for longer than a few months help should be sought from a GP or an organisation such as Headspace.” Patton’s study shows most young adults with depression and anxiety had clear-cut problems in their teenage years. Life events, particularly the separation or divorce of parents, are a challenge for young people, says Patton, whose study is published in medical journal The Lancet. Other triggers are commonly around family conf icts, bullying, relationship diff culties, academic problems or distressing life events like illness or death.

Overall, about half the males and 70 per cent of the females in the study had a problem at some point from their teens to their mid-20s that a GP would be concerned about. But about half the boys and a third of the girls recovered on their own within six months. “The longer the episode continues, the more likely the teenager is to have recurring problems into their early 20s,” Patton says. However, regardless of how long the episode lasts, many people appear to grow out of their problems by the time they reach their late 20s. “The good news is that a lot of these problems stay in the teens. “Even when they spill over into the 20s, many people have a capacity to continue to grow out of them,” says Patton. quity markets performed strongly in 2013 and to some investors it may be hard to imagine the market repeating the strong gains in 2014. Does this mean it’s time to cut and run? Remember, investing is a long-term proposition and it is important to focus on some time-honoured principles. These principles include: Focus on companies that make prof ts and pay dividends. If a company is making more money than it is spending then it is in a position to pay dividends (fully franked are preferable) and may be in a better position than a company that doesn’t pay dividends were the economy or market to slow. Don’t forget, ‘total return’ includes capital growth and income. When selecting investments ask whether the company represents good value and is it in a medium to long term up trend. ‘Value’ is a relative term but simply, may be determined by comparison of its price earnings ratio with like companies. Also, its earnings per share looking forward are important. Whether or not it is in a medium to long term up trend is determined through technical analysis and reviewing the share price

performance over previous years. Has the company a track record? It’s an important question. Company f oats on the ASX are aplenty and track record and mandate upon listing are important. Also, be wary of companies that claim to be ‘about to’ or, ‘are so close to’ striking a f nd but have nothing to show. I’m not saying you should avoid growth stocks or f oats but review the opportunity and the risks. Also, ‘momentum’ is not the right answer in the long term, it is a short-term indicator. To follow on from the last point, avoid investments that are not understood. Take the time to learn about the company, its products and services and its plans for the future (where does it want to be in f ve years and how does it propose to get there?). To add to your homework, overlay stock research with the state of the overall market. The market itself may be affected by various factors including interest rates, a slowing in the housing market and external events. Try to think about how these events may affect your investments and what benef ts arise in other sectors or asset classes. The above principles are not a panacea to avoid losses but are there to assist with sound sleep, the need to focus on the long term and the importance of research. Remember, in the long run diversif cation is the key. Chris Harris is an Authorised representative (no 435773) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. Not as Happy as you used to be? Is Stress, Anxiety, Depression or Insomnia overwhelming you? Are Anti-Depressants not working for you? Find out why! Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow?

though studies are available showing its impact on the brain. It can be passed on from person to person very easily, and so more than one person in a household may be suffering from similar symptoms and both may be affected.

One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them. The cause has been found in the gut and seems to be widespread throughout the community. It is a malicious infection mainly picked up from travelling overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is often only detected in specialised testing. This infection has been shown to release a neuronal toxin, affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It has not often been associated with mental health conditions even

Often, sufferers are able to correlate the f rst sign of symptoms, coinciding with a trip overseas where they experienced a tummy bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. Australia is so close to the Indonesian countries it can be transmitted from, and Australians travel there often for their holidays, so imagine the amount of people coming back who could be infected and how it can be passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work. Fortunately it is quite easy to address, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. I have seen patients who have suffered depression for four decades, and after treatment for one month have improved out of sight. Other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment. Bacterial infections are just one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating depression, anxiety or ADHD. We have successfully treated hundreds of patients within months of beginning treatment. These are not conditions with unknown cause like many believe, and can be resolved quickly.

What is your go-to meal at home? Okonomiyaki (a Japanese savoury pancake) is always easy to make when the fridge is low. There’s always cabbage, chicken, miso, and the sauce prepared to go. How did you get your start in the industry? At the age of 17 I began my apprenticeship at Norm Provan’s Oasis Resort (now Oaks Oasis). I also happened to meet my lovely wife Anita there too! If you weren’t a chef, what would you be doing? Def nitely a food travel writer, and enjoy f avours from each continent. I would combine my love for food, travel and books all in one. Who is the most interesting person you’ve ever cooked for? Prince Phillip when at the Bucks Club in London, and closer to home our local celebrity family, the Irwins. Both could share a few curly tales I am sure. What’s the most challenging dish you prepare? Anything for the kids! They are my toughest critics.

What’s the best advice someone ever gave you? My father told me, “Be careful how you treat people on the way up, because you might meet them on the way back down.” Who is the most influential person in your life and why? My wife Anita; we’re a good team. We have fun together with our kids, and respect each other as individuals so that we can grow together too.

MAKE/MODEL SUBARU BRZ DETAILS Two-door, four-seat sports coupe with four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. TECH STUFF Two-litre, horizontally opposed four-cylinder double-overhead-camshaft Boxer engine with Active Valve Control System produces 147kW at 7000rpm, 205Nm at 6600rpm; six-speed manual transmission and Torsen limited slip differential.

WICKED FUN IN THE BRZ WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

E

very year, for the past decade or more, Australian motoring writers have taken part in a secret annual ritual. It starts with a phone call from the PR man from Subaru, offering test drives in the latest version of that company’s Impreza WRX STI – the lethally quick, rally-bred, turbocharged cult machine that has underpinned the Japanese brand’s enviable reputation. It’s a phone call we all look forward to - our once-a-year chance to get behind the wheel of one of the truly fun machines of its generation, each successive model a little more powerful, a little more exciting,

a little more technically advanced. This time, the routine changed. Instead of handing out STI drives, he had a new treat. It’s called the BRZ, and like the Impreza WRX it is developing a reputation as the must-drive machine for amusement-starved motoring writers. It’s nowhere near as powerful as the STI, nor anywhere near as fast. But it’s every bit as much fun as the factory-tuned WRX. So, we again f nd ourselves behind the wheel of the intoxicating BRZ, this time with some tweaks to ensure we have something new and interesting to say about it. Those tweaks come in the form of

an $8000 sports kit that sharpens the edges of this taut little coupe. The BRZ is a most interesting thing. Keen followers will know it has an almost identical twin in the form of Toyota’s GT86 – the two Japanese manufacturers teaming up to develop a car with identical engines and transmissions, identical design and some minor cosmetic differences def ning the two rival models, which sell head-to-head against each other. The BRZ has been an unqualif ed success for Subaru, selling more than 1000 units of what is, after all, a rather niche model during the f rst year of its existence. Continued over >

FEATURES Seven airbags, Vehicle Stability Control; ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution; automatic, bi-Xenon self-levelling headlights; iPod connectivity with Bluetooth; dual-zone air-conditioning; keyless start; power steering, mirrors and windows; six-way adjustable sports seats; LED daytime running lights. THIRST 7.1L/100KM. VERDICT An old-style modern sports car. BOTTOM LINE $37,150 drive away; as tested $38,650 (with optional sports kit, $7995, and Alcantera leather heated seats, $1500).

] four-cylinder horizontally opposed ‘Boxer’ engine. But outright speed is not its forte – taking a fairly modest 7.6 seconds to reach the speed limit. Unlike many sports-bred machines, this one is not about absolute speed and acceleration but one focused on all-round driving enjoyment. In a world where power output has become a key selling point, the BRZ has gone in the opposite direction to deliver much the same result. A car that’s a joy to drive. Just as well, because this car will never be bought on the strength of its interior appointments or f nish. It’s pretty Spartan and not very inspiring, to be honest. The seats and driving position are great, as you might expect. But there’s not much of a stereo. It does provide air-conditioning and, for some reason, there are heaters in the wonderfully supportive, grippy sports seats. But that’s about it. The two back seats are all but unusable to anyone bigger than a small child and the boot is horrendously small, an issue

magnif ed by the spare tyre, which takes up more than its share of available space. Subaru will kindly sell you a list of accessories including sat-nav, reversing camera and parking assist, none of which are part of the BRZ’s standard kit. The BRZ’s ride is on the harsh side of uncomfortable. Sitting so close to the road it sometimes feels as if your backside is scraping on – or bouncing off – each imperfection in the road surface. The dash is plasticky and not in keeping with the rest of the car. The stereo looks like it’s been jammed in as an afterthought. But the driver-focused stuff is f ne – switchgear is easily accessed, and most importantly the instrument panel is clear and precise. But none of that negative stuff really matters. This is a car designed and built purely for one reason. Fun.

And it delivers that in large doses. It goes around corners as if on rails – not a hint of body roll, nor any sense that the sticky, low-prof le tyres are anywhere near their grip limit. The raspy, angry engine note gets more intrusive the further the

tachometer needle spins towards its 8000 redline. And, of course, there’s the notchy, short-throw six-speed manual transmission that encourages the driver to scythe through the ratios like a boy racer. The BRZ is wicked fun, made all the more so by these latest tweaks.

<from previous page It offers mostly cosmetic changes, apart from a reworked coil spring set that drops the BRZ’s ride height down a notch or two. Otherwise your $8000 gets you front, side and rear skirt spoilers, a spoiler on the boot lid (in black mica), 17-inch black STI alloy wheels, rear diffuser, plus some bits and pieces wearing the prized STI logo (most notably a gearshift knob and red starter button). While the sports kit falls some way short of a full work-over by Subaru Tecnica International, the net result is a car that sits even more impossibly low to the ground and, as a consequence, is even more fun to drive than ever. Keep in mind, this car already enjoys a centre of gravity just 460 millimetres off the ground. The black aero kit lowers ground clearance even further, making it almost too low for most driveways and speed bumps. It also makes it feel like an even lower crouch to get your bottom into those supportive sports seats. It’s quick enough, thanks to the 147 kilowatts of its revvy, willing,

CAR SALES REACH RECORD NUMBERS

A

ustralians bought a record number of motor vehicles in 2013, helped along by increasing demand for sports utility vehicles (SUVs). More than 1.13 million vehicles were sold nationwide during the year, up from 1.11 million in 2012, motoring industry f gures show. Passenger cars remained the most popular accounting for nearly 50 per cent of all sales, however, the strongest growth was in SUVs, which increased their market share from 27.6 per cent to 29.4 per cent. Toyota was the top-selling car marker for the 11th consecutive year, with nearly 215,000 vehicles sold – almost twice that of nearest rival Holden. The company also had the most popular vehicle, with the Corolla notching up sales of more than 43,000, followed by the Mazda3, with 42,000 sales. Of the Australian-made cars, sales of Holden Commodore slipped nine per cent to 28,000, while Toyota Camry sales were also down nine per cent to 25,000 and the Holden Cruze suffered a 32 per cent decline to 24,421, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries says. Holden announced late last year it will close

Pope donates Harley A Harley-Davidson motorbike donated to Pope Francis is to be sold for charity next month, Bonhams auction house says. The pontiff received the gift in June, when he met and blessed Harley enthusiasts who travelled to Rome to celebrate the American marque’s 110th birthday. The motorbike, a 1.6-litre Dyna Super Glide Custom, will be auctioned in Paris on February 6. Proceeds will aid Caritas, a Catholic charity seeking to raise money to renovate its shelter for the homeless at Rome’s main railway station. Bonhams says it comes with Francis’ signature on its fuel tank, and certif cates from Harley-Davidson and the Pope’s personal secretary, giving the bike an estimated value of $18,000 to $22,700. AAP

its local manufacturing operations from 2017, while Ford will close its Geelong and Broadmeadows factories in 2016. Toyota has yet to make a decision on its Australian operations. But the company’s Australian head of sales Tony Cramb says Toyota expects sales to remain strong in 2014. “Toyota is targeting in excess of 200,000 sales for the tenth time and we expect another solid result for the industry with more than one million sales for the seventh time,” he says. The heat is on AAP economist Garry Shilson-Josling shares his thoughts on the housing market.

T

he Australian housing market is still simmering, according to the latest readings of sales and lending. It’s being heated up by the increasing volumes of money f owing into it, and housing f nance f gures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics last week just provide more evidence of that. In November, lenders gave the go-ahead to 25 per cent more lending to investors and home buyers than they did a year earlier, with a goodly chunk of that heading into new housing. That has meant an extra $600 million going into the housing industry every month compared with 12 months before. And that’s not counting lending from offshore, including by foreign branches of Australian banks, or f ows of unencumbered cash. So it’s no surprise that recent estimates have shown annual price rises averaging around 10 per cent a year. The title of Commonwealth Bank economist Michael Workman’s analysis of the f nance f gures put it simply, “More lending means higher house prices.” And there may be more to come. “At this stage dwelling prices appear to have some more upside as long as interest rates remain low,” Workman said in his report. The strong undercurrent of demand showed up clearly in the new home sales f gures from the Housing Industry Association last week.

[ 38 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J AN UARY 24, 20 1 4

38.indd 1

Sales hit a two-and-a-half-year high in November, and the f gures showed evidence of a pattern of sales responding to new supply, rather than what might normally be expected – increased building activity following a pickup in lending. Spikes in sales in June, September and November appear to have followed short-term rises in building approvals two months earlier in each case. Although it was hard to pin down statistically, it does appear that sales of apartments “off the plan” go a long way towards explaining this pattern, HIA chief economist Harley Dale said last week. The Commonwealth Bank’s Workman identif ed the same pattern. “One of the more unusual features of the current dwelling upswing is that buyers still remain keen on buying new properties, usually inner city or suburban apartments, off the plan,” he said. “Buyers, who appear to be evenly split between investors and owner-occupiers, are happy to take delivery up to two years from agreeing to buy.” And f gures from mortgage broker Australian Finance Group show the strength in demand continued up to the end of the year. The value of new loans written by AFG in December was up by 29 per cent from a year before. This market looks like simmering for a little while yet. AAP

Our happy state Conf dence in Queensland’s property sector has surged, a report shows. While positive sentiment improved across Australia to the highest level since the Property Council/ANZ Property Industry Conf dence Survey began in 2011, Queensland was the knock-out. The results revealed a 10 point spike in Queensland’s conf dence for the March Quarter, up to 152 on the index, the highest in the country. A score of 100 is considered neutral. The state also had the highest expectation of economic growth in the nation over the coming year. “We have seen a dramatic shift in conf dence among Queensland’s property industry over the past two surveys, driven primarily by the ongoing recovery of the residential market,” Property Council executive director Kathy MacDermott said in a statement. “The previous quarter’s survey results exhibited f rst signs of a residential revival. “During the past three months, industry’s house price growth expectations have grown to the highest levels in the country, and to historic levels for Queensland.” AAP M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 The new moon urges you to find fresh ways to connect with those around you. And don’t worry if your spontaneous approach results in mistakes along the way.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Is it time for bulls to look for a better job? Are you overdue for a promotion? Maybe you need to work smarter, not harder? If you resist career changes, you’ll be left behind.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 You’re super busy but are you achieving anything? If you tackle tasks in short, sharp bursts, you’ll gradually get things done. It’s the perfect time to read, research and investigate.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Sentimental crabs can spend too much time in the past. Resist the temptation to brood over love gone wrong. This week’s stars will help you let go and move on.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Madonna, Whitney Houston, Robert de Niro, Jennifer Lopez … why are so many entertainers past and present also Leos? Because they relish being the centre of attention.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 With the new moon activating your health zone, it’s time to start a new exercise program as you swap cream buns for carrot juice. Virgos thrive on routine and a healthy lifestyle.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 It’s time to connect with your inner child as you tap into creativity within. There could be some conflict between your professional and personal lives, as you struggle to achieve balance.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Pluto opposing Jupiter increases your ambitious streak. Be persuasive rather than forceful. And perhaps it’s time to boost your own performance, before telling everyone else what to do.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Sagittarius is a fiery sign of extremes, bold moves and extravagance. And Jupiter, your ruling planet, opposes Pluto on Friday, which will increase your tendency to overdo everything.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 With the new moon in your cash zone, it’s time to take stock of your financial situation and initiate some smart new strategies. Don’t forget to do an inventory of your inner wealth too.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 This week Aquarians are twice as much fun – and twice as much trouble. You’re keen to re-model an important area of your life. But you’re also feeling restless and rebellious.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Pisceans are masters of avoidance – and this week the new moon energises your ‘escaping’ zone. Ponder a problem that needs to be faced or a decision that needs to be made.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

All righty then, here we go! Australia Day weekend. Barbecues, prawns, cold beer, cricket, Triple J Hottest 100 and hopefully a few cheeky waves! The situation is looking like there will be a few waves around, with the wind swinging around from east to north-east to ESE, so get in early and beat the bottom of the tide. But summer is all about surf ng with onshore conditions and waiting for that nice peak to pop up in front of you. So who scored last Monday morning in the early offshore conditions? Marcus from Beachbeat Caloundra managed the impossible – snapping a Hypto Kryto at Wurtulla! No mean feat, I can tell you. Anne Street had it going on before the wind hit and outside Moffats was far better than it looked from the car park! Have a great and safe weekend guys.

FISHING REPORT

with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Whiting are taking yabbies when cast onto the same banks that yabbies were pumped from, as the tide comes in. The banks around Goat and Channel islands are returning whiting to 600 grams. Catch mangrove jack on livies and lures amongst the snags up in Petrie and Eudlo creeks. Flathead will be on the drift using plastics from the Motorway Bridge to Pincushion in the mouth of the Maroochy. SURF: Sand whiting and dart are working the low tide gutters along Maroochy north shore using pippies and worms. Jew will be on the night tides at Pincushion with a few tailor feeding with them. Find some nice-sized bream on peeled prawns at most of the beaches of the Coast. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow most close-in reefs working are well at dawn and dusk for parrot, sweetlip and cod using squid and cut f sh f llets. The Barwon Banks are also returning squire, pearlies and mixed reef f sh on pillies, squid and plastics. FRESHWATER: Lake Macdonald will be working well with lures trolled along the weed line opposite the boat ramp for Mary River cod, golden perch and bass up to two kilos.
