ou know the parents ‘have reached a certain age’ when they spend their weekends window shopping for caravans. I say that with the utmost respect, of course. I myself can’t wait until the younger Pearson leaves home so I can trade in my job for a Winnebago with ensuite and state-of-the-art-sound system. No roughing it for me! True to their baby boomer label, the Pearson parents have looked at every caravan shop on the Coast, and a few down at the Goldie as well, with a view to whittling away the inheritance. Mum wants a combined toilet/shower, Dad says they’ll also have to get a new LandCrusier to pull it. It’s lucky they have plenty of parking at their place. The grey nomads might not be taking over the Coast, but they are certainly a signif cant group of travellers, coming to and heading

from our region in their thousands each year, as Jarna Baudinette discovers in this week’s cover story. She meets up with some travellers who are enjoying their retirement discovering the country, or even just investing in an RV for weekends and the odd week away. On the road again HITTING THE GREY NOMAD TRAIL IS MANY A RETIREE’S DREAM. JARNA BAUDINETTE DISCOVERS THE APPEAL OF THE LIFESTYLE.

t’s a term that has become part of the Australian vocabulary – ‘grey nomads’, or people of retirement age who travel Australia in caravans or motorhomes. Grey nomads have been a f xture on Australian roads for several decades and are steadily growing in number. According to a study in the Journal of Travel Research last June, in 2009 the grey nomad market accounted for 28 per cent of all domestic travel in Queensland. Research by the State Government estimates there are 100,000 recreational vehicles on Australian roads at any time.

THAT’S FREEDOM

Many who have reached retirement age say the allure of the grey nomad lifestyle is the freedom to travel the open road. That’s the case for Golden Beach resident Chris Burcher and his wife Janet, who bought a caravan shortly after retiring to the Sunshine Coast from Sydney in late 2004. “You have the freedom to just be able to hitch up the caravan and head off – no matter where you stop or how far you drive, you’re completely self contained,” Chris says. “You can stop wherever you like.” Their purpose-built 15-foot van features [ 6 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J AN UARY 31, 201 4

a three-way fridge, a two-burner stove, a small sink and a dinette that seats four. Along with a solar panel and a small robe for hanging clothes, Chris says it’s all they need for “anything from a week to three months”. They prefer free camping sites for overnight stays, and stay in a caravan park for its facilities around one in every four nights. Another drawcard is that they can travel with their dog, Beau. Chris says his caravan is quite modest compared to many on the road. “There are generally two different groups – the ones who like to do it in absolute luxury and bring an image of their home along with them, and then the rougher travellers who just want to have a place to lay their head and prefer camping for camping’s sake,” he says. “We fall into that second group.” However, even those with more luxurious vans say the appeal still lies in the opportunity to get off the beaten track. Sharon Teunis and her husband Herman live south of Caboolture and relish any chance to escape in their van. “The appeal was in the idea that we could get

away from where we were living, from our normal house and lifestyle, and just go,” Sharon says. “You can discover the country you live in, and you don’t need to get on a plane or have a passport.” They started in 2004 with a trip to the northern tip of Australia, and have since worked their way up from a $3000 campervan (f tted with

think, oh no, we can do better. And they either get a mobile home or a bigger van as time goes on.”

Elaine Foster and Ralf Brosch are the directors of Free Spirit Caravans and build more than 50 customdesigned vans each year. They say along with the traditional grey nomads, an emerging market is baby boomers who are nearing retirement age and want an escape from their busy lifestyles. “I think what’s happening is that people are getting run down with the amount of stress in their lives, and people and vehicles around,” Foster says. “So when they do travel, [they] are not wanting to be in with lots of crowds, or in places where they have to go into caravan sites every night.” The new breed of off-road caravans allows people to travel to remote destinations and see parts of Australia that remain untouched. Free Spirit’s models have a strong chassis and are heavy duty enough to withstand rough terrain, but lightweight enough to be towed by a four-cylinder vehicle. At around two tonnes, they keep fuel costs low, but Foster says the biggest drawcard for clients is that they can customise the design. “For example, they might love to play cards, so the off-road table we install might have to be the size to play rummy with their friends,” she says. “If that makes them happy, for the sake of putting a slightly bigger table in, we’ll do it.” Other requests might include a deeper shower recess that conserves water by draining into the washing machine, or an outdoor television set-up so couples can relax separately. “Clients are getting a bit braver, or are willing to ask for more things to make their life on the road more comfortable,” Foster says. “They’ve worked for a long time and see the van as an asset, because of the way it’s been built and the fact it will last for more than 20 years. It’s a good investment in a lifestyle they couldn’t achieve without it.”

Their sheer numbers make grey nomads a key tourism segment, and the Queensland Government has conducted research into how to better attract them to the state. Bill Darby, who is tourism and events chair for Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, says while Queensland is not known for being RV-friendly, there are some simple steps the Sunshine Coast could take to appeal to travelling boomers. The Coast already has beautiful natural surrounds, a warm climate and is well connected to a national road network, making it a highly desirable destination. Darby says the problem is a lack of facilities, even in existing caravan parks. “What we don’t do is provide onground facilities to cater for RV travellers,” he says. “They don’t need to have amenities buildings – all they need is space to safely park, and water and dump points where they can dispose of their waste.” As more vans become entirely self-suff cient, grey nomads “want to pull up in a nice spot and leave no trace”, he says. “They don’t want to jam into a caravan park.” He suggests the answer is more free camping spots, like those favoured by Chris and Janet, and says those opposed to free camping need to understand that grey nomads are a different – and far more lucrative – type of tourist than backpackers or Wicked campers. “We’re talking about people who have spent as much on a motorhome as some people have spent on their house,” Darby says. “They’ve got a budget to make a contribution to the local economy as they travel around. All we need to do is allow them vehicle access, at very little cost. “These people aren’t going to stay in our resorts, because they’ve got their RV [or van]. It’s not that they can’t afford to stay in a resort – that’s just not what they want to do.” continued over>

While many grey nomads seek out free camping spots, others prefer caravan parks. Sharon and Herman visit Cotton Tree caravan park around four times per year and say it’s one of their favourite places. “The facilities are great there, and you don’t have to get in your car and drive anywhere,” Sharon says. “You can arrive and leave the van and car parked for a month – it’s walking distance from my favourite coffee shop, from Mooloolaba, from the shopping centre. But if you do want to get in your car, there’s Noosa, the Hinterland, markets at Eumundi. “We always get a position where we can sit in the annex and look at the water and watch the beautiful sunsets. Everyone sits in their chair with their cheese and biscuits and a glass of wine,” she says. “Sunsets are very important to grey nomads – everywhere you go in Australia you see people lined up with their chairs and their glasses of wine, trying to get the best photo of the sunset.“

Balancing act MWP asked Sunshine Coast Council for its position on free camping. Here is the response from acting CEO Greg Laverty: “Council is aware of the signif cance of this growing drive tourism market, particularly the grey nomad sector and the associated economic benef ts. These travellers generally stay short-term and require a patch of land, eff uent dump facilities, and access to potable water. “Council research into the impacts and benef ts of implementing an RV-friendly destination strategy is underway. Our initial research indicates that balancing social, environmental and economic priorities and interests when it comes to non-commercial camping can be extremely complex. “A 2011 [State] Government Economic Development Committee identif ed that grey nomad tourism was especially important for rural and regional communities. “This same report also highlighted that caravan parks

It noted that while there was a need for free camping across Queensland this should not be at the expense of commercial operators, given that they also were important providers of accommodation for grey nomads. “The important contribution that commercial accommodation parks make to the local economy is recognised by council, however, it is also acknowledged that many self-contained RV travellers do not

require the facilities and services typically available at commercial parks. For this reason council has great interest in the work being undertaken by the Queensland Government, which is developing a Drive Tourism Options and Guidelines … It is anticipated the guidelines will address managing stakeholder interest and risks, regulatory issues and the current operating environment of commercial operations as well as practical approaches to providing both commercial and noncommercial camping.”

A property expert claims the Sunshine Coast is leading the way in Queensland’s job creation. Michael Matusik says of the 54,000 jobs created across the state last year, 10,000 or 20 per cent of them, were Property expert Michael Matusik created on the Coast. He says the employment growth came largely through construction and health/medical related areas, with a lesser impact from the retail and tourism sectors. Sunshine coast mayor Mark Jamieson welcomed the news, saying growth in the professional services, education and aged care sectors was also evident. “A number of new aged-care facilities have recently opened, while the new Stellar Group headquarters in Maroochydore employed nearly 300 professional positions alone,” Jamieson says. “Given the Sunshine Coast makes up approximately seven per cent of the state’s population, it is a fantastic result that we are creating 20 per cent of the state’s jobs growth.”

COOKING UP A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

ight women from far-flung corners of the globe are setting out to put a flavoursome twist to dinner time across the Coast. The women, originally from Bangladesh, Mauritius, Israel, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Iran and Sri Lanka, have joined forces in a social enterprise initiative to provide cooking classes featuring authentic meals from their homelands. The innovative business, operating under the name of Kitchen Carnivale, was started as

as she talks about her passion of cooking and sharing food. “I do it by heart,” says Rittikulsittichai. “I want to cook and I want to share [with] people. I am always so happy when I see people enjoy my cooking.” She says it is hard to make friends and despite her background working in human resources she has struggled to get a job and sees the cooking classes as a way to meet people, share her culture, her love of cooking and earn a living. Nambour Community Centre co-ordinator Mark Wischnat says the meals are so authentic many of the women did not have written recipes. The f rst classes were held last weekend. While initial bookings have predominantly come from people in Nambour, Woombye and Palmwoods, Wischnat says Kitchen Carnivale is expected to entice tourists with the authenticity of the experience, which gives them a cultural and culinary journey. Community worker Naomi Wiley says the experiences and skills of these multicultural women should be shared and appreciated. “Cooking classes with an ethically and socially minded focus is something that the Sunshine

Coast tourism market hasn’t had until now,” Wiley says. Of course cooking schools are not new on the Coast but they have been increasing in number and popularity in recent years. Sunshine Coast Destination CEO Simon Ambrose attributes our love affair with the culinary arts to the rise of television cooking shows and celebrity chefs. “There is no doubt there has been a surge in the popularity of cooking schools and the Sunshine coast has certainly become a hub, well positioned to be a market leader in this area,” Ambrose says. With more than 500 producers, world-class food festivals, innovative chefs and unique farmers markets and restaurants he says the Sunshine Coast is an attractive place for cooking schools. “We know that keen foodies will chose a destination or getaway based

around the primary experience of a cooking class. “The Spirit House is a classic example and has built up a reputation over many years that caters to people coming to the region for the sole purpose of attending their classes.” Ambrose says culinary tourism is valuable to the region in terms of boosting visitor numbers. Texting and walking at the same time seems to be a skill most of us are unable to handle. Dr Siobhan Schabrun says people look like robots. She should know. She has spent many hours testing the ability of 26 people to type and read text messages while walking. At best, they irritate others on the footpath or have a minor fall. At worst, they can end up in traff c, on railway lines or in the sea. Schabrun gives an example of a Facebook-engrossed tourist who had to be rescued from the sea in December after walking off a Melbourne pier. “People slow down and deviate from a straight line. They swerve more,” says the University of Western Sydney physiotherapist, whose study is published in the journal PLOS ONE. “Even if they think they are walking straight, they are probably not. That’s an issue if you are near traff c or a train track.”

The result is that earnings are slow-growing, but from a high level, and are fairly predictable. Add low interest rates and you produce an expansion in valuation multiples such as the price/ earnings ratio. Furthermore, f nancial market volatility (or the willingness to pay for protection against it) is at very low levels. This is a counterpart of a low-rate environment. Markets are priced for the assumption that cheap money and activist central banking take a lot of risks off the table. This is, however, more than just a simplistic act of faith in central banking. The tepid growth which underlies low rates is also lowering risk in the real economy. Borrowers are unwilling to borrow, companies do not get over-

Nonetheless, the risk premium implied by the market’s current level is reasonable across the cycle, so we don’t believe that stocks are under-pricing risk. We are therefore reluctant to advocate raising too much cash and recommend maintaining a reasonable allocation of shares in investment portfolios.

t may be 350 kilometres above Earth and a place that only a privileged few will ever visit, but experts say the International Space Station is crucial to advances in science, health and technology. Earlier this month, NASA said the life of the $US100 billion (about $115 billion) ISS would be extended by four years, or until at least 2024, allowing for more global research and scientif c collaboration. The orbiting outpost, which was launched to fanfare in 1998, has more living space than a six-bedroom house and comes complete with internet access, a gym, two bathrooms and a 360-degree bay window offering spectacular views of Earth. Its entire structure is made up of various working and sleeping modules, and extends about 100 metres, making it four times bigger than the Russian space station Mir and about

f ve times as large as the US Skylab. The ageing structure requires regular maintenance, which is done by astronauts who don spacesuits and venture outside the lab. Julie Robinson, an ISS scientist at NASA, insists the space station, which has a mass of 420,000 kilos but is near-weightless in space, is worth the trouble and expense. The ISS, which is maintained by a rotating crew of six astronauts and cosmonauts who have hailed from 14 countries, allows scientists to study the long-term effects of weightlessness on the human body, Robinson says, while testing new space technologies that will be essential for missions to Mars. Robinson adds that “many of our early research results are making their way into drug development, medical technologies, pathways. We also have Earth-remote sensing instruments that

provide unique data about the Earth and its climate and there are a number of new instruments going up in the next two years. When you put all of that together it’s really an extraordinary set of benef ts back here on Earth.” Robinson says that a robotic arm used at the space station can save lives during brain surgery. She describes the possibilities at the ISS as “unlimited,” and notes that a growing amount of private money is supporting research at the space station. “This is an era of space research that is unlike the past and we are looking at the decades ahead as the time when science can f nally pursue these boundaries, explore these frontiers and make these unique discoveries,” she says. “I think as we look back, 20 or 30 years from now, we will call this the era of the space station... because of the number of advances and benef ts that will come out.” AFP

Scientists have heads in the clouds A new satellite built by NASA and its Japanese counterpart is set to launch next month on a mission to study rain and snow around the world. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory aims to help scientists peer inside clouds and improve weather and climate forecasts, the US space agency said earlier this week. The mission is “the first co-ordinated international satellite network to provide near real-time observations of rain and snow every three hours anywhere on the globe,” NASA said. “The data will be used by scientists to study climate change, freshwater resources, floods and droughts, and hurricane formation and tracking.” The satellite has been flown from the US to Japan, and is scheduled for launch from JAXA’s Tanegashima Space Center between on February 28, NASA said. The GPM Core Observatory will orbit the Earth at a height of 407 kilometres. It is carrying a Japanese-designed dual-frequency precipitation radar and a US-built microwave imager (GMI). From May, its data will be conveyed to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in the US state of Maryland and distributed online. AFP

The speed at which the new features are migrating from premium models downward and spreading among brands is accelerating as automakers jostle for attention in an increasingly crowded market. “The hottest new technology in cars today is voice-to-text functionality that reads a driver’s emails or texts as they come in and allows the driver to dictate a response without looking away from the road,” Karl Brauer, senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book, says. Automakers have aligned themselves with tech giants to lure customers with increasingly complex – but hopefully still intuitive – systems to transform their consoles into souped-up smart phones. Navigation has been upgraded to integrate online consumer reviews from sites like Yelp, and guide

motorists to roadside businesses. Touch screens reminiscent of an iPad have been added to consoles outf tted with apps such as Pandora music streaming. Then there are proprietary apps aimed at f xing life’s little problems. Touch a button on your phone and your lost car will pop up on a map. Still can’t f nd it in the parking lot? Tap again and the phone will honk your horn. Locked the keys inside? Another button opens the door. Worried your teenager is driving too fast or hanging out with the wrong crowd? There’s an app that will send you a text message if they surpass a chosen speed or leave a designated area. The real challenge for automakers is to make sure all of this technology doesn’t become a dangerous distraction, says Art St Cyr, head of product planning at American Honda. Keeping it out of the car simply isn’t possible as people are just too attached to their smart phones and “don’t want to be

PHONE TECH Google is joining with car makers General Motors, Audi, Honda and Hyundai in a new American partnership to bring the Android mobile system to vehicles. The companies, with semiconductor company Nvidia, announced the formation of the Open Automotive Alliance, an industry group “committed to bringing the Android platform to cars starting in 2014”, according to a statement. “The OAA is dedicated to a common platform that will drive innovation, and make technology in the car safer and more intuitive for everyone,” the statement added. “This open development model and common platform will allow car makers to more easily bring cutting-edge technology to their drivers, and create new opportunities for developers to deliver powerful experiences for drivers and passengers in a safe and scalable way.” Automakers are looking at new

technologies for the connected car, to bring navigation, entertainment and other applications to vehicles. Some automakers are looking at developing their own platforms, while others are considering platforms like Apple’s iOS or BlackBerry-owned QNX. But the announcement looks to put Google and Android in the driver’s seat. “Millions of people are already familiar with Android and use it every day,” Google’s vice-president Sundar Pichai says. “The expansion of the Android platform into automotive will allow our industry partners to more easily integrate mobile technology into cars and offer drivers a familiar, seamless experience so they can focus on the road.” AAP

German testers have used a 70-kilometre dash down the autobahn to show just how uneconomical high-speed driving can be. The tests show some cars consume more than 60 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres when driven at top speed. In all, 10 cars from eight manufacturers were assessed by experts from the publication Autobild. The thirstiest was the outrageously fast Jaguar XFR-S. Its V8 engine burned 62.5 litres per 100 kilometres when driven at its full tilt of 300km/h. This is more than f ve times its average consumption of 11.6 litres. The angular Mercedes-Benz G 500 SUV, one of the least aerodynamic cars on the road, proved to be equally thirsty. Average consumption of 14.9 litres per 100 kilometres quadrupled to 62.3 litres when driven at full belt. It was a similar story with the

TYRE INDUSTRY TO RECYCLE MORE Australia’s tyre industry is aiming to reduce the number of tyres going to landfill and illegally dumped thanks to a new industry initiative. The formation of Tyre Stewardship Australia and the national Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme were launched by federal environment minister Greg Hunt last week in a bid to develop new industries from the 48 million tyres being disposed each year. Tyre Stewardship Australia chairman Gerry Morvell says tyre disposal practices for end-of-life tyres is damaging the environment and creating health and f re hazards. “Australia recycles only around 16 per cent of its end-of-life tyres compared with 43 per cent in Europe and 32 per cent in the US,” Morvell says. “This scheme will provide a framework to effectively reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of the 48 million tyres which reach the end of their life in Australia each year. “It gives the Australian tyre industry the opportunity to show strong environmental and product stewardship leadership.” End-of-life tyres and tyre-derived products can have a wide range of uses including road surfacing, soft fall playground surfacing, brake pads, industrial and commercial f ooring, they can be used in explosives or in civil engineering

and for fuels for energy recovery. While the scheme has generally been welcomed environmentalists say more needs to be done to stop the dumping of millions of waste tyres. “At best Tyre Stewardship Australia is a partial solution because it is a voluntary opt-in, opt-out system and we need to take tough action on companies using rogue collectors who f out f re safety and state and local government laws to undercut the legitimate recyclers – causing horrendous f re risk and environmental problems,” says Jeff Angel, national convenorr of the Boomerang Alliance. A typical tyre contains steel, rubber and textiles. A successful recycling scheme could d shred the tyre, remove the steel and textiles and ground round the rubber into particles. Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce executive director David Purchase welcomed the program launch. “Attitudes have to change about waste tyres,” Purchase says. “They should be considered a valuable resource and instead of burying good quality rubber and valuable steel in the ground or shipping them overseas, we should be putting them to good use,

Moffat’s magical past Locals and visitors with a connection to Moffat Beach are being asked to share their beachside memories.

f you remember the good old days of sun, sand, blue water and the classic Moffat beach shack, the Sunshine Coast Library would like to hear from you, as part of a Federal Government-funded program aimed at capturing our history. The Moffat Beach area has changed a lot over the years and many of the older-style beach shacks have been renovated or demolished and replaced by contemporary homes. The ‘Memorably Moffat’ project would like to hear from residents who have photos, memories or other memorabilia of Moffat Beach, and invite you to give Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Library a call. “If locals have specif c memories, photographs or other memorabilia of Moffat Beach they would like to share or lend, we look forward to hearing from them,” says councillor Tim Dwyer. “These places and the stories of those who lived or holidayed in them help to shape Caloundra’s heritage and community identity.”

The council recognises that our history is as important as our future in shaping our identity, and the project will help to document these valuable memories for future generations to enjoy. Over the years the skillion roofs, geometric decoration, old-style concrete strip driveways and native plants left to their own devices, have been replaced by contemporary houses with landscaped gardens. Those quaint little shacks with names like ‘Seasongs’, ‘Blue Horizons’ and ‘Lazy Days’, and bad lino f oors, are the stuff that the Memorably Moffat project wants to capture. “As most beach houses were a second house visited for weekends and holidays, activities focused on the beach rather than the yard,” says Dwyer. “There was often little, low or no fencing. These places represent the holiday exodus to the beaches after the rigours of World War II. The interiors and important features of traditional Caloundra beach houses will be documented throughout the project.”

Local architect Roger Todd compiled the Sunshine Coast Places website, which has established the groundwork for the project. He says the history of the Moffat Beach area is signif cant as it tells the story of the post-war era when people were starting to feel optimistic about the future and men could get to the beach. “Initially they came from Brisbane to camp and then started building these simple beach houses, which were made from f bro because that’s all they needed at the time,” he says. “One of the reasons the character has changed so much is that rather than using these houses as holiday homes people are living in them permanently so they want something a bit more substantial.” Community Programs Portfolio councillor Jenny McKay says the project is supported by the Australian Government’s ‘Your Community Heritage Program’. “The Australia-wide project is about enhancing cultural heritage tourism and advocates for appreciation of mid-century

he ‘smart home’ is emerging as a major technology battleground with industry giants presenting new visions of houses filled with appliances controlled with smartphones and smart watches. Korean arch rivals LG and Samsung both unveiled their own takes on the technology at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month. The technology is devoted to dissolving the gap between humans and everyday technology, but has the added bonus of nudging consumers into a single brand’s ecosystem. LG unveiled a prototype of its ‘HomeChat’ technology on Tuesday, pointing to a future where users control their appliances via simple conversational text messages. If you’re at the shops, for example, and can’t remember how many beers you have in the fridge, you

can send it a short message, to which it will reply promptly and with a friendly thank you. The texting is controlled via a specialised app developed in partnership with Vine to work with both Android and Apple phones. LG says a range of new appliances made in 2014 will come with the technology, including fridges, washing machines, robot vacuum cleaners, and air conditioners. One catch is that users must enter information about what they’re putting in the fridge in order for the fridge to keep up to date, but demonstrations have shown the prototypes work smoothly and quickly. Samsung, meanwhile, unveiled its own vision of the ‘Smart Home’, which will enable users to control their appliances by speaking into Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smart watch. If you’re heading out for the evening,

Man this is simply just crazy. More ESE winds â&#x20AC;&#x201C;arghhhh, although they are only calling them 15 knots! There are waves to be had if you can get through the frustration of the winds. The best spot is at DI on the Rainbow side if the swell is getting in. Maybe Mooloolaba on the high tide, but it is an east wind. Will we ever get offshore conditions again? Maybe when I leave to go snowboarding. Hope everyone scored a few waves last weekend before the wind went crazy. I was lucky to f nd a bank peeling perfectly with no one around â&#x20AC;&#x201C; could not believe my luck. Get on YouTube and check out all the entries into the XXL big wave competition. Hawaii has got some good-size entries! A bit of escapism.

ESTUARY: Mangrove jack are about in numbers up in Coolum, Petrie and Eudlo creeks with lures and live bait the go. Some honker whiting are taking yabbies on the drift past Goat and Channel islands and down to Cotton Tree. Mud crabs will be working down from Bli Bli. Catch f athead on plastics throughout all Coast rivers. SURF: Conditions have not been suiting surf f shermen in the past week, but those braving the wind are happy with good catches of tarwhine, sand whiting and f athead with a few tailor around just after dark. OFFSHORE: Conditions are not favourable for offshore. Those that ventured out last week brought home great catches of Spanish and school mackeral from the Caloundra Wide area. Plenty of bait down deep. FRESHWATER: Lake Macdonald hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the volume of f sh of bigger impoundments but will always return bass or golden perch on medium-diving lures with red and black preferred. Check the status of Lake Baroon before venturing up there as there has been a blue-green algae problem of late.
