hat would you do if you suddenly found yourself in possession of a fortune? I myself would book ongoing weekly spa treatments for me and my closest friends. Then I’d have a nice and relaxed think about what to do with that ridiculous amount of money I suddenly discovered in my bank account. Like most off ces, over the water cooler, the staff at MWP will often ponder what it would be like to come into an unexpected fortune. Some would travel, others would donate heavily to charity. Some would ditch work and live it up, others say it wouldn’t change them. We wonder what our readers would do. So this week we thought we would have a bit of fun and add a touch of luxury to our usually humble magazine. In our cover story we take

a peek at the luxurious things in life in celebration of the decadent, magnif cent and just plain expensive. Continuing the luxury theme, in agenda on page 25 we head over to Milan, one of the world’s most decadent cities, and offer f ve things to do that are absolutely free. The ever-stylish Nicky Spencer and Dianna Mullins this week went off in search of some bits and pieces to add serious bling to your wardrobe – that’s in my style on page 28. For those in the market for a new set of wheels, we just had to let you know of some seriously luxurious rides that you can buy right here on the Sunshine Coast. For that and more motoring, head over to page 34. Finally in My Property Preview we head up to the Whitsundays and inspect a $25 million oceanside mansion. Ah, it’s good to dream.

What would you do if you won $50 million? Think you couldn’t spend all that if you tried? We think you could. For some of the world’s richest citizens, that $50 million is simply play money, so as a nod to the luxuriously expensive, outrageously ostentatious and incredibly aspirational, this week MWP is having a look at all things indulgent in this special luxury cover story. Whether you have the cash, wish you did or can’t imagine you ever will, read on.

Lamborghini Veneno Roadster

Road tripping Don’t know what to do with that spare $5 million you have lying around this year? It might be time to invest in some new wheels. According to a forbes.com report from late last year, 2014’s most expensive ride roars in with a starting price of $5 million. It’s the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster. But you’ll have to get in quick. The Italian carmaker plans to make just nine copies of the lightweight runabout. If you can’t get on that list, Bugatti’s Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse has a starting price of about $2.7 million, while Sweden’s Koenigsegg is offering the Agera S at an affordable $1.69 million. For some luxurious vehicles you can purchase closer to home, head over to motoring on page 34.

Oscar’s silver lining

When the celebrities head off to the after-parties from this year’s Oscars event there will be the inevitable losers as well as winners from the evening. Many an actor, sound engineer, director and musician will be spilling tears as well as champagne onto their Marchesa gowns and Tom Ford tuxedos, thinking of the award that got away. But there will be a consolation – the famous Oscars goodie bag, which each nominee and presenter gets to sift through in the morning after the night before. The contents of this year’s bag haven’t been revealed yet but judging by past years, they’ll be some treasures worth keeping. Last year’s was worth more than $50,000 and included a $13,300 trip to Australia, a $670 voucher for acupuncture treatments, circus lessons and a $5575 facelift procedure. Other objects that have made their way into the bag in the past include hand-illustrated tennis shoes, tequila, clothes and dinnerware. Coming second doesn’t really seem so bad.

Throughout history, chandeliers have been used to add opulence to the world’s palaces, museums and foyers around the world. With this in mind, the members and editors of travel website VirtualTourist.com say these are the world’s top f ve must-see chandeliers:

1. THE VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM, LONDON Head to London to check out the Rotunda chandelier at the entrance of the V&A by internationally celebrated sculptor Dale Chihuly. It is a nine-metre blue and green glass-blown chandelier, completed in 2001.

2. HALL OF MIRRORS, VERSAILLES, FRANCE

Top five must-see chandeliers

No list of chandeliers would be complete without the examples in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles. This highlight of the palace boasts 357 mirrors, 17 glass doors, marble walls and ceiling paintings, as well as 17 large and 26 smaller captivating chandeliers.

3. HAGIA SOPHIA, ISTANBUL While museums and palaces are obvious homes for chandeliers, many places of religious worship use chandeliers for light, decoration, and ceremonial signif cance. One example is the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in 532-537 AD as a Christian church, chandeliers were placed throughout for candles and oil

lamps. In 1453, the church was converted to a mosque, and in 1847, a central chandelier and various pendant chandeliers encircling it were added. The mosque is now a museum so anyone can visit this architectural masterpiece.

4. THE CHANDELIER AT THE COSMOPOLITAN HOTEL, LAS VEGAS Few cities are known for their over-the-top opulence like Las Vegas, and such decadence demands a lot of sparkle. The Chandelier, a bar and nightlife concept at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, is just that – an enormous chandelier, positioned in the middle of the hotel with a different experience on each f oor.

5. ESCHER IN THE PALACE, THE HAGUE Most visitors to Escher in Het Paleis (Escher in the Palace) make a trip to explore the work of MC Escher, the artist who played with optical illusions and perspective in his fantastical artworks. In addition to displaying almost all the works of the Dutch artist, the palace features exquisite chandeliers by Rotterdam-based artist Hans van Bentem. In keeping with the surreal and sensational themes of Escher’s work, the contemporary chandeliers hang in shapes including a shark, a spider, a sea horse, and an upside-down open umbrella. AAP

In the frame

Want to indulge in your love of art and start your own collection? It helps to have the cash. According to the online magazine theartwolf.com, Paul Cezanne’s The Card Players, now in the possession of Qatar’s royal family, is the most expensive painting ever sold. It changed hands for $US250 million back in 2011. With inf ation, that works out to be about $289 million Australian. Last year a private buyer picked up Picasso’s La Reve (The Dream) for about $172 million. Also in 2013, Three Studies of Lucian Freud by Francis Bacon sold for close to $160 million at Christie’s in New York.

A quick online search reveals that today’s Australian bride will spend an average of $2000 on her wedding dress. And if you think that’s a little excessive for one frock for one day, compare that to some famous wedding gowns. One of the world’s most talked-about wedding dresses, carried off beautifully by Grace Kelly at her 1956 wedding to Prince Rainer of Monaco, cost about $75,000 in today’s money. That’s less than the estimated $83,500 dress bill for Kim Kardashian’s 2011 wedding to Kris Humphries. Mind you, Kim got three dresses for that price – which is a bargain really. Japanese designer Yumi Katsura created a $9.5 million dress, embellished in white gold, diamonds and pearls in 2006. But a gown created a few months later by Renee Strauss and Martin Katz takes the (wedding) cake for its $US12 million price tag. It was probably the 150 carats of diamond embellishing that added to the price.

Most of us like to curl up with a good book, but second-hand shops and libraries are f lled with those who baulk at paying $30 for the latest release Jackie Collins. Clearly that is not an issue for the buyer of a book that sold for $15.59 million in New York late last year. The translation of Biblical psalms, The Bay Psalm Book was printed by Puritan settlers in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1640 and sold at a one-lot auction in just minutes by Sotheby’s, making it the world’s most expensive printed book sold at auction. The book, with its browning pages and gilt edges, was displayed in a glass case behind the auctioneer to a relatively small crowd which

attended the less-than-f veminute auction in person. Sotheby’s named the buyer as David Rubenstein, the billionaire American f nancier and philanthropist. He was in Australia and his bid was conducted by phone. Rubenstein is used to splashing out on expensive bits of paper. He bought the Magna Carta back in 2007 for more than $23.7 million in New York. It was one of only 17 existing copies of the 800-year-old English royal manuscript setting out the rights of man. The world’s most expensive manuscript is the 72-page handwritten Codex Leicester. Bill Gates bought this collection of scientif c writing by Leonardo da Vinci for well over $30 million in 1994.

TREAT YOUR LOVED ONE

J

It’s great for couples to celebrate Valentine’s Day because it gives you an opportunity to prioritise your relationship

ust a little bit of luxury can inject quite a bit of romance into a relationship. And before you start thinking luxury is beyond your budget, remember that a bit of decadence doesn’t have to break the bank – a small investment can go a long way. While there are probably plenty of guys (and some girls) out there rolling their eyes and cursing the romantics who have turned Valentine’s Day into a major marketing frenzy, thinking outside the heart-shaped cards could be worth your while. Flowers and chocolates are predictable, especially if you are just picking them up at the corner store. And for most of us money is too tight for a Maserati. But whatever you do, think twice about buying a teddy bear or f uffy toy. It’s a popular gift option on Valentine’s Day but it def nitely falls short in the luxury and indulgence stakes.

[ 16 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ FE B RUARY 14, 2 0 1 4

16.indd 1

“There are better Valentine’s Day gifts out there other than the teddy bear,” says John Aiken, RSVP relationship expert and psychologist. And don’t even think about cheap underwear, bathroom scales or a vacuum cleaner – nothing will kill romance as fast as a household appliance. “You’re better off going for a present that’s creative, classy and shows more of an adult side, for example an edgy card with some concert tickets in it,” Aiken says. Better still, make your own card. Sometimes it’s the simple things that can make the biggest impression. And if you really want to impress, make the effort to book a fancy restaurant that stocks your favourite wine, organise the transport – perhaps a limousine or chauffeur driven car for a touch of indulgence. A luxury is a treat or delicacy most of us don’t experience on a daily basis – it doesn’t have to cost

the earth. For something sentimental, take a photo of the spot you went on your f rst date and frame it. You could try a picnic at the beach with a hamper of f ne food and a bottle of bubbles and enjoy it while you watch the sunset. Make a home-cooked meal with all the trimmings or, if the budget allows, hire a chef to cook for you at home. If you’re looking for a bit of adventure, book an early-morning trip in a hot air balloon – romantic, exciting and a treat. If you are feeling a bit cashed-up and very indulgent, surprise your loved one with plane tickets and luxury accommodation at a destination she’d love. You might still be questioning the merits of Valentine’s Day but Aiken says it is an opportunity to celebrate your love, even if you’ve been together for years. “It’s great for long-term couples to celebrate Valentine’s Day because

M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

it gives you another opportunity to prioritise your relationship,” he says. “In our everyday routines, we get so busy and often these opportunities to do something special with your partner drop away, so take this occasion with both hands. “Put a little bit of thought into it and see it as a chance to show you still desire each other.” And if you are still in doubt, skip the sentiment on Valentine’s Day and save it for another day, later in the year, when you can surprise your love with an indulgent treat. ❤ AAP & MWP

STUDY MAPS SPECIES MIGRATION

Lead author professor Michael Burrows and USC’s associate professor David Schoeman.

A

University of the Sunshine Coast academic has played a leading role in an international research project to map the impacts climate change is likely to have on the natural world. USC’s associate professor in Bioastatistics Dr David Schoeman

is among 21 authors of the paper Geographical Limits to Species-range Shifts are Suggested by Climate Velocity, published in the scientif c journal Nature this week. The researchers used 50 years of observed temperature data, together with models for future temperatures, to estimate the speed and direction of climate change and determine the “climate pathways” that land-based and marine species will need to follow to stay within their optimum temperature ranges. It highlights areas around the world where species diversity is likely to increase, decrease or remain stable, as well as sites where some animals and plants will face localised extinction if their migration is blocked geographically and they cannot adapt to rising temperatures. Schoeman helped conceptualise, conduct and illustrate numerical analyses for the study. He says the research is based on the understanding that temperature plays at least some

role in determining the distributions of most plants and animals. “Under this assumption, we recognised that simply modelling the speed and direction at which temperature contours traverse the surface of the earth (in other words the velocity of climate change) should provide a good f rst approximation of where ecological rearrangements might be most intense,” he says. “We looked at how far you’d have to go, and in what direction, to stay at the same temperature. So, if a species requires a certain temperature range for a successful life, is there a way for it to navigate across the land or seascape to stay within that range? The study pinpoints some areas, like the Gulf of Carpentaria, as “sinks” where diversity will intensify as marine species are trapped by the geography of the coastline. It highlights “climate corridors”, like parts of Bass Strait, through which species migration is likely to be channelled.

The Pathways Wellness Centre, a holistic health practitioner centre, will open in Maroochydore on March 1. The centre will be the headquarters for the Heal Yourself Expo and will incorporate integrative medical practitioners. Heal Yourself Expo general manager Wayne PinaRoozemond says six permanent practitioners will be on site covering nutrition, massage and various holistic therapies. He is hoping a general practitioner will also be on board. He says the centre will be a family drop-in space and include a community centre, workshop area and retail shop. The centre is located at 7 Ocean Street, Maroochydore. To hire the workshop room or to become a permanent practitioner in the centre contact Wayne on 0415 800 888.

Foundation funding The Sunshine Coast Community Foundation has provided grants up to $5000 and to help support at least 65 Coast families. One of Queensland’s oldest charities, MontroseAccess, provides therapy and support services for children with physical disabilities and has been granted $3000 to fund a new mobile electric hoist. Chairman Simon Gamble says the foundation provides grants for small to medium-sized charities.

“We are here to support vulnerable members of our community and we are delighted to help local organisations that work so hard to improve the lives of others, through our grants program,” Ambrose says.

Community support Maroochy RSL has given back more than $400,000 to community organisations, charities and vital services on the Coast throughout 2013. The community groups supported by Maroochy RSL in 2013 include the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, St Vincent de Paul Society, Maroochy River Rowing, Daniel Morcombe Foundation, Sunshine Coast PCYC, Maroochydore Rugby Union Club

and the Sunshine Coast Sports Federation. RSL CEO Clare Paton says the RSL team members also donated their own time and efforts on top of the club’s funding to many community events and causes. “We have a team of amazing and dedicated individuals who are always ready and willing to go over and beyond, and help these community organisations in need,” Paton says.

App helps chart spending Australians are spending more on their homes and cars at the expense of travel and children’s entertainment, according to new data released by Australian money management app Pocketbook. Mortgage or rent payments accounted for an average of 25 per cent of spending in January, up two percentage points on January 2013. Car expenses such as petrol increased to 10 per cent of total spending, up from six per cent a year earlier. Travel spending, though, dropped to six per cent from 10 per cent the previous year. Children’s entertainment also suffered, dropping from three per cent of total spending to less than one per cent. Pocketbook aggregates a user’s bank accounts, credit cards and loans, providing a single view of spending. This gives it a unique insight into the spending habits of its 50,000 Australian users. The new data was drawn from a sample of 19,766. It showed bank fees accounted for four per cent of average total spending – more than the average spend on health insurance. Pocketbook alerts users when they are slugged with bank fees, and several have claimed they have had incorrect fees refunded after being alerted. AAP

AUSTRALIAN TEAM’S ANCIENT FIND

A

T

he oldest known star in the universe has been discovered by a team of Australian scientists. The discovery of the star, which formed about 13.6 billion years ago, was made by scientists at the Australian National University and has allowed astronomers to study the chemistry of the f rst stars. Lead researcher Dr Stefan Keller of ANU’s research school of astronomy and astrophysics called the f nd a “one in a 60 million chance”. “I was pleasantly surprised [when we found the star],” Keller says. “It was very much a needle-in-a-hay-stack situation.” The team discovered the star using the university’s SkyMapper telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory near Coonabarabran in northern NSW. The wide-f eld telescope is being used to search for ancient stars as part of a project to produce the f rst digital map of the southern sky. “Just by imaging the colours of stars, we can tell which stars are prime candidates of being the oldest,” Keller explains. “We can tell how much iron it has – the

more iron, the younger the star. Keller describes the discovery as a “time capsule”, providing new information that def ed earlier beliefs about some of the f rst stars. The discovery, which was conf rmed using the Magellan telescope in Chile, is published in the latest edition of the journal Nature. AAP

small piece of educational history has been unearthed in New Zealand where archaeologists have excavated New Zealand’s oldest school. The archaeological project has shed light on a bygone era revealing 200-year-old toys, pencils and parts of writing slates. The school was attached to the country’s f rst mission station, which stood at Hohi Bay in the Bay of Islands from 1814 to 1832. After two years of f eld work, University of Otago archaeologists excavated the mission, which is believed to be the house of European missionary Thomas Kendall. Artefacts including glass, buttons, jewellery, smoking pipes, fragments from plates and cups, coins and gunf ints were found. “We uncovered signif cant archaeological features that have added to our understanding of the Hohi mission and the people who lived and worked there, as well as those who were impacted by the mission,” University of Otago anthropology and archaeology associate professor Ian Smith says. “Overall the archaeological evidence paints a picture of the hard struggle that these f rst European settlers had in making a living here, and how dependent they were on local Maori for food supplies and protection.” Missionaries began arriving in New Zealand 200 years ago. he asset class of hybrid securities has received a lot of media attention over the past 12 months, particularly as term deposit rates have fallen to a level where retirees are f nding it diff cult to earn suff cient income to fund retirement expenses. So, just what are hybrids? Most hybrid securities fall into one of two groups; subordinated notes or preference shares. They share some similarities, but there are also some important differences. Let’s look f rst at the similarities. Most hybrids have a face value of $100 and are traded on the ASX. They can be f xed- or f oating-rate securities, although the majority of recent issues have been f oating, in other words they pay a f xed margin above the bank bill rate which f oats. The total rate is reset on a regular basis, typically every three months. For example, AGL Energy subordinated notes pay a margin of 3.8 per cent above the bank bill rate. If the bank bill rate on reset date is 2.6 per cent, then the total rate is 6.4 per cent. The total rate will be reset again in three months, referencing the bank bill rate at the time. Typically, the maturity dates on these instruments can be quite long, with some set out 20 to 30 years,

although many have early redemption or reset dates. As they are traded on the market, however, it is possible to exit at any time at the market price. There are also regular reset dates which sometimes give an early opportunity for redemption. As they are market traded, the price will not stay at $100, although the price volatility is usually a lot less than that of ordinary shares. At the moment, the price of most hybrids falls between $100 and $108. The margin above $100 consists of a small accrued-interest component plus the premium that investors are willing to pay for the higher yield inherent in hybrid securities. A signif cant difference between subordinated notes and preference shares is that notes rank higher up the security scale. The highest security available to the retail investor is cash or term deposits, which are government guaranteed up to $250,000. The next in line is subordinated notes, followed by preference shares and then ordinary shares. Thus, if the issuer of the hybrid runs into f nancial diff culties, hybrid holders rank above ordinary shareholders when it comes to any return of capital. The above analysis only scratches the surface of the intricacies of hybrid securities. It is important to consult an adviser who is experienced in this asset class and who has access to good research and can advise on the risks of each issue. FIVE FREE THINGS TO DO IN MILAN

[

A G E N D A

]

Milan is Italy’s f nance and fashion capital, with hundreds of billions of euros invested on the Italian Stock Exchange and tens of billions more spent yearly in the city’s boutiques. Travellers to Milan come to broker deals and spend money. Still, there is plenty to see for those whose pockets are not so deep. Here are our top f ve.

WINDOW SHOPPING

Think Milan, think fashion. It’s invitation-only to the four annual Milan Fashion Week runway previews, where designers offer their vision on next season’s looks – often adding audacious embellishments not really intended for the showroom. A peek through the windows of the city’s numerous brand-name stores and boutiques gives a more street-ready view of the collections. Milan’s most famous shopping street is via Montenapoleone, a 500-metre display of pure luxury apparel, jewellery, shoes, bags, and even knives and Venetian glass. While Prada may command close to $18, 000 for a blue fur coat, it doesn’t cost anything to dream. The globe’s major luxury brands are all clustered in close proximity on the streets that surround Montenapoleone and the nearby Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a shopping mall that dates to the 19th century. Whilst window-shopping, don’t forget to people-watch – Milanesi remain among the most fashionable of the fashion-aware Italians.

DUOMO

The ornate white facade of Milan’s Duomo cathedral is the city’s single most-recognised symbol. The Gothic-inspired Duomo took nearly six centuries to complete, incorporating a cornucopia of styles by its completion in 1965, and is among the largest cathedrals in Europe. The

Duomo is also the seat of the archbishop of Milan, Italy’s largest and most inf uential diocese that gave the world two popes during the 20th century. Take in the imposing facade with its Gothic spires from the piazza outside, dodging tourists, shoppers and pigeons alike. There’s also a fee to access the spectacular view of fairytale-inspiring pinnacles and spires from the Duomo’s roof, but restaurant and bar terraces offer a free peek from surrounding grand buildings – called palazzo.

construction began, but now embrace the new district. Families f ock to the raised, pedestrian piazza on weekends, a safe place for kids to dash about. A coffee shop and bookstore with free Wi-Fi is crowded even on rainy weekday mornings. The Unicredit Tower, the shiny new headquarters of Italy’s largest bank, has claimed the title of Milan’s tallest building at 218 metres, topped by a single twirling steel spire that echoes the spires of the now-dwarfed Duomo in the distance.

HANGARBICOCCA

NAVIGLI

Visitors to Italy feast on Renaissance and Baroque art treasures, but there are increasing efforts to promote contemporary art – including the HangarBicocca, founded and funded by the Pirelli tyre company. The capacious former industrial complex in Milan’s Bicocca district on the city’s northern edge has been transformed into the largest private contemporary art space in Europe and is well worth a visit.

PIAZZA GAE AUELENTI

The new skyscrapers at Piazza Gae Aulenti, named for the late architect and designer, have little bearing on Milan’s neoclassical architecture. It’s no surprise many visitors draw quick comparisons with Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, which similarly aggregates living, off ce and commercial space. The ever-conservative Milanesi were wary when

Landlocked Milan had to dig a navigable system of canals to ease commerce and construction throughout the centuries. Today, the canals are lined with restaurants and cafes and are the centre of Milan’s nightlife, but there is still plenty to see by day. An antiques market featuring more than 350 sellers unpacks on the banks of the Naviglio Grande every last Sunday of the month except in July. The Vicolo privato del Lavandai – literally the launderers alley – is where, until the 1950s, women would come and wash clothes using wooden washboards on the banks of the Naviglio Grande. And the Ponte di Pietra, or stone bridge, was originally made out of wood, rebuilt in cast iron by the Austrians in the 1900s and eventually cast in concrete, which is the current version. Once, wealthy residents collected tithings for a crossing. Today it is free. AAP

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve ever cooked for? I had the pleasure of catering for the Australian and West Indies cricket teams at the Gabba during the 2000/2001 Test. But I’d have to say Ray Gannon, creator of Dug the Dugong, would have to be the most interesting individual I’ve

cooked for. He seems to have endless fascinating facts, stories and ventures. What’s the best part of being a chef? The compliments you receive from the customers, particularly at the end of busy non-stop service when they tell you they enjoyed their meals and watching the kitchen team working so well together. The chance to travel and work is also a great benef t to anyone in the trade. What task do you love being able to hand over to your apprentice and why? Our apprentice, chefs and cooks all get to have input into the menus and specials, which gives everyone a chance to show their ideas and creativity. Who’s the most inf uential person in your life and why? I guess I’d have to say my mum. She has always been a strong, hard-working person who makes the best of any situation. And of course she and dad kept me fed, clothed and housed for the f rst 19 years of my life. Thank you and love to you both!

JEEP’S TWO-WHEEL DRIVE WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

F

or most of us, it’s the very def nition of a four-wheeldrive. Jeep, after all, practically invented the off-roader. Yet Jeep’s latest model isn’t a four-wheel-drive. For the f rst time, the latest version of the American maker’s iconic Grand Cherokee

will offer a two-wheel-drive only version. A Jeep without all-wheel-drive seems as improbable as toast without Vegemite. But it looks like even the original four-wheel-drive can’t escape the ‘soft-roader’ revolution. That’s not to say Jeep is turning

its back on its off-road roots. Remember, the name itself ref ects the famous military ‘general purpose’ vehicle – the Willy’s GP or Jeep for short – from which the name originated. Jeep, owned by the global Chrysler Corporation, built its f rst civilian models in 1945. Four-wheeldrive is still Jeep’s f rst language. The Grand Cherokee brand was launched more than two decades ago – Jeep claims credit for ‘reinventing’ the premium Sport SUV category, and more than f ve million Grand Cherokees have been sold in that time. But the addition of an entry-level Grand Cherokee Laredo, driven by the rear wheels only, ref ects the latest step in a gentrif cation of the brand that has been gaining pace for several years. In fact, the latest Jeeps are not only the most ref ned machines we’ve seen from the marque, but they’re among the most ref ned

SUVs on the market. That represents a massive evolution for Jeep, which until perhaps a decade ago was still pumping out hard-riding, slowmoving, bad-steering machines with not much to offer beyond their ability to go virtually anywhere. Not so these days. A period of co-ownership by the Germans helped add some ref nement and cutting edge technology to Jeeps, but recent models take that to a new level. The latest model is deservedly gaining more than its share of attention. It was recently named by judges of Fairfax’s Drive awards as its 4WD of the year and it f nished 2013 with f ve consecutive months selling more than 1000 units a month in Australia. This two-wheel-drive Grand Cherokee will bolster those numbers. With a starting price of $43,000, our Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x2 continued over >

< from previous page offered surprising levels of quietness, comfort and mechanical ref nement normally found on vehicles costing at least twice as much. Jeep now competes with many of the leading European and Japanese brands for quality and equipment levels, while still retaining its off-road cred. While our test vehicle lacked the off-road skills, in 2WD form it still makes a convincing case as a highriding family wagon. The Laredo’s bargain price gets you a full-sized wagon with room for f ve adults plus a weekend’s worth of luggage and a smartly presented cabin, a generous level of standard equipment and a beautifully resolved drivetrain equal to many prestige brands. The Laredo’s very competent 3.6-litre ‘Pentastar’ V6 petrol engine is complemented by a seamlessly smooth eight-speed automatic transmission (as good as any in this class) that is now standard fare right across the Grand Cherokee range. That family tree starts with the

Laredo 4x2 and includes four trim variants and three engine choices, including a three-litre turbo-diesel and the brawny 6.4-litre V8 found in the high-performance SRT8 model. The Laredo 4x2 is available only with the petrol V6 – for the more frugal diesel you’ll need to spend an extra $8000 for the Laredo 4x4 – but it does the job impressively. With 210kW and 347Nm it has ample punch while still managing a respectable 10.1L/100km, slightly better than on the 4WD version. Power delivery is crisp and smooth and the eight-speed auto – accessed via a funky-looking electronic shifter – chooses ratios seamlessly. The Laredo’s cabin, an area of huge improvement by Jeep in recent years, is stylish and comfortable. Even though the base model gets cloth trim, rather than leather, the seats are plush and supportive and complemented by soft-touch surfaces and modern design. The instrument panel is particularly impressive – a seveninch colour TFT screen using the

same virtual display technology for speedo and tacho featured in many of the world’s luxury f agships from The seats are plush and supportive Mercedes-Benz, and complemented by soft-touch BMW and Lexus. There’s also a useful display of trip eight-speeder gives it a long, loping information, consumption and even stride, yet it remains reasonably tyre pressures. nimble around city streets. Harley-Davidson motorbike that brief y belonged to Pope Francis has been sold for $369,000, 16 times its highest original valuation, at an auction in Paris. The American motorbike maker gave the 1585cc Dyna Super Glide to the Pope in June to mark the brand’s 110th anniversary and while the 77-year-old never rode it, he signed it before donating it to Roman Catholic charity Caritas Roma. “It’s a record for a post-vintage motorbike, from the 21st century,” says Bonhams France, the auction house, adding the bike was purchased by an unidentif ed European buyer. The funds from the sale will go towards the restoration of the charity’s hostel and soup kitchen, based at Rome’s Termini railway station. A jacket, also given to the Pope by Harley-Davidson, was snapped up for $87,000.

The bike is on show at the Grand Palais in Paris – where the auction took place – among hundreds of other iconic vehicles such as RollsRoyces and Cadillacs. According to Bonhams, Pope Francis has another HarleyDavidson, although the famously humble pontiff is more a fan of buses. He opted to ride one the day after his election last year, instead of taking a limousine, and regularly used them in his homeland Argentina instead of taxis. AAP

German high-performance carmaker Porsche has revealed the f rst car to carry the Porsche name was an electric carriage that could manage a dizzy 34 kilometres an hour. The Egger-Lohner electric vehicle, or P1, was developed by pioneering engineer Ferdinand Porsche, who died in 1951. The P1 horseless carriage vanished from sight for more than 100 years but was rediscovered in an Austrian garage. The vehicle, which was given a thorough dusting-down but not restored, is on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen in Germany. The vehicle was formally known as the Egger-Lohner Elektromobil Modell C.2 Phaeton, but it has P2 stamped on its parts –- and the P stands for Porsche. The origins of the horseless carriage go back to 1898, when Porsche, then aged 23, was working for the Vienna coachmakers Lohner. He f tted a small electric motor

othing says luxury like a $25 million mansion in the Whitsundays. Called Mandalay House, this Airlie Beach pad is the only property in the Whitsundays with a private rock wall marina and enjoys uninterrupted views of the islands. On a 4200-square-metre block with a northwesterly aspect, it has its own helipad and a climate-controlled wine cellar with dining for 12. Agent Mark Beale from Ray White Whitsunday says he expects the home – which was built by its current owner, a local property developer, and took three years to construct – to fetch a price that is bef tting its grandeur. “Six king-sized bedrooms, nine bathrooms, guest house, staff accommodation, an amazing horizon pool overlooking the ocean – and that’s not even close to the facilities on offer,” Beale says. “You just can’t buy land like this anymore anywhere on the east coast, so once it has sold you will never be able to buy it again. “The house also comprises an ocean-front pavilion for entertaining, a cinema, gymnasium, fully contained caretaker/guest cottage, pool room, a six-car garage and a wine cellar with large dining table for entertaining guests.”

couple of Coast businessmen have expanded on their knowledge of property and franchising to develop a property management business model they plan to take to the world. Frog Rent is the initiative of Greg Gardner and Darren Wallis (pictured) from GJ Gardner Homes, and Smith and Sons Renovations and Extensions, who are building on the franchising models they have used for their existing businesses to create a national franchise for the property management market. Wallis, CEO of GJ Gardner Homes, says they came up with the concept after hearing complaints from landlords and tenants about property management procedures, and decided there was merit in developing a streamlined business model. “There’s a lot of noise out there with a lot of negative experiences,” Wallis says. Frog Rent aims to make the experience smoother for all parties by concentrating solely on managing properties and Wallis says they are the f rst in Australia to come up with a unif ed approach. “There’s not a brand that is just a property management business,” Wallis says. “We’re there 100 per cent to support franchisees in the property management sector.” He says they have developed procedures and manuals, software systems, marketing and a supportive environment to enable franchisees to readily step into the property management business. The business model has been designed to suit small enterprises with a handful of properties on the

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Plans are put on hold but promises kept. Mercury is motionless until Friday, giving you time to tweak arrangements. Dueling traits of impatience and integrity do battle, but by week’s end your honesty wins. Allow imaginative ideas to effervesce.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 A change in the landscape is rejuvenating. Solar energy makes you a magnet for exotic places and unfamiliar faces. Your communication hat is on, prompting you to regale the crowd with tales. Connections made this week propel you up the ladder of success.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 As you muscle in on someone else’s territory, red lights flash. The action planet Mars warns against repeating past mistakes and treading on tender toes. Your intentions are usually good but the execution is sometimes rushed. Tap into the good twin and give the inner rebel a rest.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Your whisper of wanderlust becomes a cry for freedom. Sun in the escapist realm releases you from the restraints of routine and chains of love. Fortunately, absence and autonomy serve to enhance rather than weaken relationships.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Your dreamy demeanour masks a razor-sharp mind. Meld the two together and creative concepts can be conjured up. You prefer to work behind the scenes, away from the glare of public and private eyes. Others see you as preoccupied and keep away.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 You stop short of idle gossip, valuing fidelity above fame and fact over fiction. Newfound diplomacy comes courtesy of compatible solar energy in the relationship sector. Discreet friends and family members teach you the art of keeping secrets, leading by example.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 You take subtle liberties with loved ones. Ruling Venus brings a sense of entitlement to the domestic zone and others are expected to do your bidding. In a positive sense, you contemplate a revamp of your surroundings. Creative solutions are the answer to your prayers.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 Mars boosts mental prowess and prevents you from being bullied by others. Your ability to make decisions has never been better, even though you take the well-worn path rather heading in a new direction. Your personal magnetism and robust reputation are enticing to everyone.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 You trade freedom for familiarity. Up-close-andpersonal stars sneak under your guard, transforming Sagittarians into cuddly but confident individuals. Other people’s friends become your best buddies and already intense love affairs deepen further.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 You cease fretting the small stuff and put first world problems in perspective. Compassionate planets in the communication zone help you see past the superficial. The wall of self-protection comes down this week. Letting go is an unlikely way of hanging on.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 A bonus or benefit puts you in the box seat. Static Mercury causes delays until Friday but they trigger annoyance rather than anxiety. Once unfathomable problems are solved in an instant and karmic credits continue to accumulate.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Hogging the limelight is your astrological right. No longer the stereotypical spectator, you abandon self-discipline and set off in search of pleasure. It’s not all play and no work though; your day-to-day duties still exist. Finding the right balance is tricky but not impossible.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Looks like 30 centimetres of fresh powder in the next f ve days so it should be fantastic conditions! Opps, sorry that’s my snowboarding report! As for you guys it is not looking very good with small waves and north-east winds. Almost groundhog day. Hopefully, something can kickstart waves as everyone seems on edge. Maybe we sacrif ce someone? Ummmm, any suggestions? I don’t think politicians would do, but it could be fun? Well I need to get my boots back on and go ride some powder! See ya soon ya big baboons!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Mangrove jack are about in numbers up in Coolum, Petrie and Eudlo creeks with lures and live bait the go. Some honker whiting are taking yabbies on the drift past Goat Island and down around Cotton Tree. Mud crabs will be working down from Bli Bli, but watch your pots as a lot have been checked by non-owners lately with the females left in the pots and bucks removed. SURF: Low-tide gutters are producing tarwhine, sand whiting and f athead from Mudjimba to Pincushion using yabbies, pippies and worms. A few tailor are around bar areas just after dark with the odd jew taking bigger baits. OFFSHORE: We are still waiting for some calmer conditions to settle in. Close-in reefs of Coolum, Gneerings and Currimundi will be working well for mixed reef f sh with dawn and dusk. Spanish mackeral are moving around and when found, blue lures are the go. FRESHWATER: Boondooma Dam is a great place for both seasoned anglers and beginners with bass, golden perch and red claw on offer. Lake Macdonald will always return a bass or golden perch on medium-diving lures.

You will never look back...
