ou wouldn’t know it if you’d been on the Coast for only the past few months, but we do get surf-able waves (head over to our surf report on page 62 for the latest from our man in the water – it’s not encouraging reading!). Anyway, while the Coast has often unpredictable surf conditions, we do produce some pretty competent surfers, and the latest local to f y the f ag for our region is Dimity Stoyle. Last month the 22-year-old was down at the Gold Coast where she off cially joined the ASP (that’s the Association of Surf ng Professionals for you land lovers) tour. In itself this is a huge achievement that many surfers dream about but few ever reach. MWP’s Jarna Baudinette was lucky enough to have a chat to the former Immanuel Lutheran College student ahead of the competition about her achievements and her plans for the future. We reckon she has a big one, but you can judge for yourself over the page. I think Jarna is in a bit of a beachy mood. In our property cover story this week (over on page 38) she is visiting a home in the Sydney suburb of Cronulla. Need inspiration for your new beachside pad? Head over to My Property Preview for that and more. Are you enjoying our new technology page as much as I am? This week, over on page 22, we have more groovy gadgets, cool apps, and techie news to whet your geeky appetite. And in my style on page 32, Dianna and Nicky have been in Buderim and have some great ideas for those of you who are updating your wardrobes for autumn. I might see you there – I think the f rst look is the one for me! Jemma Pearson

The best tip I can T Th give to any younger surfers coming up is to just have fun and enjoy surf ng. That is what I have hav ve always done and an am still doing ng g. FIRST ROUND SPLASH: Stoyle took out heat six with a score of 17.13, which was the highest round one score out of all 17 competitors at the Roxy Pro. PHOTO: ASP/ Cestari

NO MATTER WHAT YOU WERE DOING ON FEBRUARY 28, IT’S UNLIKELY YOU HAD A MORE EXCITING, OR MORE NERVEWRACKING, DAY THAN SUNSHINE COAST SURFER DIMITY STOYLE.

S

toyle, who grew up on the Coast and is a former student of Immanuel Lutheran College, made her debut on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour at the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast that day. Stoyle is 22 and began surf ng when she was f ve. She qualif ed for the tour in November after a gruelling few years slogging it out in the ASP’s international World Qualifying Series. In early 2013 she won her f rst ASP event – the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic at Mereweather Beach in Newcastle – and in December she ended the year on a high by taking out the ASP’s coveted breakthrough female performer award, both huge achievements for an athlete without a major sponsor, who has to cover her own costs while travelling and competing. Stoyle faced off against Hawaiian Coco Ho and Californian Lakey Peterson in heat six of the f rst round at the Roxy Pro. Her score of 17.13 was the

highest f rst-round score recorded by any of the 17 competitors, with a massive 9.13 out of 10 for her second wave. She surfed against Peterson in round four and was eliminated, but says this is just the beginning of an exciting new stage in her career. MWP chatted to Stoyle in the lead-up to the Roxy Pro about her plans for the year ahead. How did you get started in surf ng? How old were you when you decided you wanted to be a professional surfer? Ever since I was really young my family would spend a lot of time at the beach and around the ocean. My dad has been a surfer his whole life. When I was f ve years old he used to take me out on his board and push me onto little waves – I have been in love with surf ng ever since! I think I was about 12 years old when I started doing competitions, and I decided then that I wanted to become a pro surfer. continued over>

How you feel when you realised you’d qualif ed for the World Championship Tour? I spent two years travelling on the World Qualifying Series before I qualif ed onto the World Tour. It has been a dream since I was about 12 years old, so to grow up doing events as a grom, then as a pro junior, then to f nally qualify was such an amazing experience! Who are your surf ng idols and who will you be looking up to on the tour? It is going to be a crazy experience surf ng against my idols on the tour this year! Stephanie Gilmore is one of my biggest idols so it’s going to be interesting having to match up against her in a heat. It’s also going to be pretty cool to be surf ng in the same events and be able to watch guys like Parko and Mick Fanning. Where’s your favourite surf ng spot on the Coast? Our surf can be pretty uneven – do you think growing up here has made you a more adaptable surfer?

] COMPETITION: Stoyle says the Roxy Pro was an opportunity to face off against some of her idols.

[thin, f nless boards with a round nose and square tail] and everything else for fun.

PHOTO: ASP/ Kirstin

Growing up on the Sunshine Coast has been pretty incredible – we don’t have very consistent surf but when it does get good it is so much fun! When the points at Noosa are working, they are some of the best waves I’ve ever surfed. I’ve always looked up to other local guys like Mitch Coleborn and Julian Wilson. Those guys are some of the best surfers in the world and they have grown up here on the Coast. Professional surfers on the ASP World Championship Tour travel a lot. Where is your favourite international break? I love surf ng in Indonesia; there is the best variety of good waves and the water is always warm!

What’s your training program like? Do you just surf, or are there other elements involved in keeping up your f tness? I surf as much as I can but I also train at the Surf ng Australia High Performance Centre [at Casuarina Beach in NSW]. I’m really lucky I get to train with some of Australia’s best surfers and we have a really good support team of coaches and trainers. We do lots of work in the gym and I also love to do yoga to balance everything out. What kind of board do you ride? I ride short boards made by JS Industries for competition. When I’m not competing I ride all kinds of boards like single f ns, logs, alaias

Your Tumblr page is called The View from 5ft High, which references the fact you’re not the tallest surfer out there. How do you handle big surf? Haha! Well I haven’t had much experience in big waves, coming from the Sunshine Coast, but I’ve been to Hawaii and had a go at some pretty big waves over there. Big waves are pretty scary, but I don’t mind going out and giving it a go. Do you see yourself as a role model? What are your tips for young surfers wanting to follow in your footsteps? I suppose I am a role model now that I am on the World Tour! The best tip I can give to any younger surfers coming up is to just have fun and enjoy surf ng. That is what I have always done and am still doing. Once things start getting too serious and not enjoyable then it’s not what surf ng is all about.

SAY NO TO BULLIES

C

oast schools are being encouraged to take part in the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence next Friday in a bid to raise awareness of the issue. Bullying. No Way! Is an initiative of Australia’s education sectors and is the key message for the national day of action, which has been an annual event since 2011. The initiative is supported by BoysTown, a youth service which runs Kids Helpline. BoysTown counselling centre manager and Kids Helpline spokesperson Tony Fitzgerald says bullying is an issue that needs to be talked about. He says Kids Helpline receives more than 4000 phone and internet contacts from young people in relation to issues of bullying each year. And more than 70 per cent of those contacts are younger than 15. “I think the biggest challenge

with the whole issue of bullying is getting people to talk about it and getting young people who are affected by it to talk about it,” Fitzgerald says. One of the issues is that many young victims of bullying think nothing will happen if they talk about it. “We know if kids speak up about it, if they’re proactive and bring it out in the open it will be dealt with,” he says. The most important thing about bullying is for the victims to know that they haven’t done anything wrong, and Fitzgerald says the best approach is to talk about it on a personal level and within the community. “We all know kids have relationships with each other where they are going to disagree. “But when the behaviour becomes persistent, extended over a long period of time, often with the

intention to demean and intimidate, and often involving a power imbalance, it becomes bullying.” Fitzgerald says there are signs parents can look out for that might indicate their child is being bullied. These include mood changes, a change in the child’s general outlook, the child might become withdrawn and might spend more time on web-enabled devices. Fitzgerald says parents should encourage resilience in children to help them cope with knocks in life but ultimately recommends bringing the issue of bullying out into the open. To register your school for the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence visit bullyingnoway.gov.au.

• Make sure the school is aware of the problem and work with the school to develop ways to stop it. • Help boost the child’s conf dence by encouraging him or her to join activities he or she is good at. • Encourage resilience in your child. SOURCE: KIDS HELPLINE

About Kids Helpline

Kids Helpline off cially opened as a conf dential phone service in 1991 and received more than 3000 calls on the f rst day. The Kids Helpline call centre is operated by qualif ed, professional counsellors who can be contacted through telephone, internet or email from anywhere in Australia.

Impacts of bullying

• Loss of motivation and concentration at school. • Shyness, social isolation and social phobia. • Poor self-esteem and loss of conf dence. • Physical health issues, anxiety or panic attacks, depression, suicidality and self-harm. SOURCE: KIDS HELPLINE

What parents can do

• Provide a safe environment for children to talk about problems. • Believe what your child is telling you and that it an important issue for the child. • Tell your child that it is not their fault. • Help your children understand the power dynamic involved in bullying and discuss ways they can prevent the bully from gaining power, such as walking away from the bully.

Kids Helpline provides 24/7 counselling to young people aged f ve to 25 years. Young people can call 1800 551 800 to talk with a qualif ed counsellor

Uni researches music therapy University of the Sunshine Coast researchers are seeking participants for a project using music therapy to help children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The three researchers hope their investigation of therapeutic listening will reduce anxiety and increase emotion recognition and attention control in children with high functioning Autism/Asperger’s Syndrome. USC associate lecturer in Psychology Dr Michelle Curran will lead master of Psychology students Bree Campbell and Ray Inkpen in the research. Curran says therapeutic listening involves delivering electronically altered music to children through headphones to help them with diff culties in processing the world around them. “This is used worldwide by therapists who report seeing benef ts in the areas of anxiety, attention and emotional regulation, she says. “We anticipate the results of our

FASHION DESIGNERS GET SUN SAFE Queensland Health has launched a competition for aspiring fashion designers as part of a new sun safety campaign. Health minister Lawrence Springborg says the initiative offers Queenslanders a chance to win a mentorship with international fashion designer Juli Grbac. “Research tells us that traditional sun safety campaigns aren’t reaching young people because the majority of the information they access isn’t sourced through traditional streams,” Springborg says. “The new campaign, Project SPF (stay pretty forever) highlights the physical damage sun exposure causes and while it may not be conventional, the research tells us it is more likely to have an impact. He says the government invested $1.2 million to promote sun safety to 16- to 24-year-olds throughout the past f nancial year. “Young Australians have the highest incidence of malignant melanoma in the world and while

the rates are decreasing, there is still more we can do.” Springborg says one of the components of the Project SPF campaign is to convince young

women that sun-protective clothing can be fashionable and he is pleased Grbac has joined the team. “The fact is all Queenslanders need to take care of their skin and we want young women to understand that wearing sun-safe clothing is really important to achieve this.” Grbac says it is great to be able to use her fashion inf uence to contribute to a good cause. “I obviously love fashion, in all shapes and forms so I’m really excited to see what our aspiring fashion designers come up with to meet this brief,” she says. “I’m hoping this competition will help young women to think more about the dangers of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and what sun exposure can lead to. Entries for the Project SPF competition close on April 31. For more information visit the Project SPF blog, Instagram or Facebook page at www.facebook. com/ProjectSPF.

Teeing off in support of local paramedics Coast residents are being encouraged to sign up for a charity golf event to support ambulance services in the Nambour district. Nambour Local Ambulance Committee president Gary Langford says the Ambulance Charity Day is in its 15th year and raises money to buy equipment for local ambulances and to help paramedics. Langford is hoping to get 80 people compete in the four-ball ambrose competition at Nambour Gold Club on March 31. Entries are $30 per person and competitors can call Nambour Golf Club on 5441 2049 to book.

App of the week Garage Band

Free

Gone are the days when you need a physical instrument to make music. A plethora of apps are available to make music digitally, and the best is Apple’s Garage Band. A variety of digital tools are at the user’s disposal from drums to keyboards. Garage Band really shines with its responsiveness to users’ multi-touch gestures and actions. Garage Band has the ability to record voice, which can be used with podcasts and iMovie narrations. The app contains a sampler tool, allowing you to create a new instrument from the sounds you record. So if you are ready to turn your iPod, iPhone or iPad into a full recording studio take a look at Garage Band. Like many other apps you can share your compositions with family and friends via email, Facebook or SoundCloud. Garage Band is free for IOS. Paul Hamilton is the Primary ICT co-ordinator at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. You can follow Paul on twitter @PaulHamilton8 or Facebook www.facebook.com/ Appsbypaulhamilton.

Weekly read > For the most part BuzzFeed is the go-to website for a lighter take on news and entertainment. But since it was founded in 2006, the social news and entertainment site has grown to become a global media and technology company, and topics cover everything from politics and animals to DIY and business. In recent years BuzzFeed has expanded into more serious journalism and long-form reporting, while still keeping its fun content. Visit buzzfeed.com to check it out.

Bits and Bytes >> Samsung Gear Fit Wearable devices are the latest in modern technology. Deloitte is predicting about one f fth of Australian adults will own a wearable device by August. Samsung’s inaugural f tness-tracking wristband, the Gear Fit, will likely spearhead the trend. The gadget was deservedly named the Best Mobile Device at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It performs the same functions as other f tness tracking bands by counting steps and monitoring sleep and distance travelled. What sets it apart is the vibrant, colourful, curved 1.84-inch rectangular display, which will deliver text, call, app and email notif cations from a user’s smartphone. A music controller means you won’t have to pull out your phone to change songs or podcasts while exercising, while an infrared light built into the underside will record your heart rate in real time. At 27 grams its very light and Samsung claims it will last about three days before needing a charge. It’s expected to begin shipping in April, but there is no word on pricing yet. AAP

KICKSTARTER MILESTONE More than 100,000 Australians have helped crowdfunding website Kickstarter surge past $1.1 billion in pledges for a range of creative projects. Yancey Strickler, who cofounded the site in April 2009, announced the milestone in a blog post last week. “Congrats and thanks to our community, our friends, our families, and to the whole entire internet for making this possible,” Strickler wrote.

About six million people globally have pledged money through the site to creative projects such as f lms, books and gadgets, including nearly 110,000 Australians. Pledges from Australia total more than $34 million, exceeded only by Canada, the United Kingdom and America. Kickstarter began facilitating Australian and New Zealand-based project pitches in November. The site allows people with creative projects to pitch to backers around the world, who are encouraged to give money in return for rewards, such as a f nished copy. It runs on an all-or-nothing model whereby only projects that meet their funding targets are allowed to keep pledged money. The site has successfully funded more than 57,000 projects, 58 of which have raised in excess of $1.1 million. Kickstarter takes f ve per cent of money raised by successful projects. AAP

Animal attraction Most of us have wasted time looking at websites featuring the humorous antics of animals. Some are better than others, but even bad sites are appreciated for their entertainment value. More often than not, funny-looking animals are involved, while the best sites are light-hearted and don’t take their subjects too seriously. And there’s money to be made from them – some cats even have agents to arrange special appearances. Pop culture and social media researcher Lauren Rosewarne says the craze can be explained by a range of factors that, when combined, create the perfect social media recipe. “There’s the cuteness factor and the fact that off ine people love

animals, so it’s no surprise we see animals taking a big role in videos,” she says. But it’s the unusual clips that go viral. “We’re attracted to animals we f nd sweet and adorable, and when they do stupid, embarrassing or funny things, it adds even more value.” There’s no science to it, Rosewarne says, or a clear explanation as to why items such as screaming goat music videos became so popular in 2012. “But these things are often short-lived. We’re not hearing goats now.” AAP

One Tooth Missing Solution Do you have a single tooth gap that you have always hated?

AFTER

When a tooth is missing the adjacent teeth can drift into this space making a one tooth solution very difficult. With the introduction of flexible dentures, nobody has to know that you are missing teeth. We can offer this solution for singular or multiple teeth.

This is the underlying thinking behind a flexible, removable partial denture. The flexibility, combined with strength and light weight, provides total comfort and great looks! If you are in a private health fund you may be able to claim a portion of the cost.

No surgical procedure is required for the construction of this flexible denture and it can be quite small and discreet. They actually blend in with your natural dentition so that it appears invisible in your mouth.

Why not give us a call today to organise a Free Consultation to see if this solution will work best for you.

The Flexibility of the partial allows the denture to adapt to the surrounding teeth in the mouth.

Mention this ad on your next visit and you may receive a Sunshine Plaza Voucher*

We also do Repairs while U Wait, New Dentures, Same day relines & Acrylic & Metal Partial dentures.

POWER FROM THE EARTH, AND THE PEOPLE ON IT, COULD SOLVE OUR ENERGY PROBLEMS.

ut at sea, gentle waves provide power for thousands of homes. In cities, dance floor moves generate electricity for nightclubs. In the countryside, hikers use leg power to recharge their phones. It is an alluring goal of clean, reliable power free from geopolitical risks, and scientists in the United States say it lies within reach, thanks to a smart way to harvest energy called tribo-electricity. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology say they have built a simple prototype device that converts stop-start movement into power.

Waves, walking and dancing – even rainfall, computer keys or urban traff c – could one day be harnessed to drive sensors, mobile gadgets or even electricity plants, the researchers contend. Zhong Lin Wang, a professor of materials science and engineering, describes the invention as a “breakthrough”. “Our technology can be used for large-scale energy harvesting, so that the energy we have wasted for centuries will be useful,” he says. ‘Tribo-electric’ is a modern term with ancient roots – from the Greek word for “rub.” It’s electricity is created from friction between two substances causing a charge of electrons to be transferred from one to the other. It commonly happens, for instance, when plastic-soled shoes are in contact with a nylon carpet, causing the snap of static discharge when one’s

hand touches a metal doorknob. Because tribo-electric is so unpredictable, it has been generally shunned as a power source. The preferred method has been magnetic induction – a turbine driven by nuclear- or fossil-powered steam or water. But, in a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, Wang’s team says they have overcome key hurdles to converting a haphazardly generated electrical charge into current. Their prototype comprises a disc that’s about 10 centimetres across, designed to show the potential from a small, portable generator moved by ambient energy. Inside are two circular sheets of material, one an electron ‘donor’ and the other an electron ‘receiver’, brought together through rotary movement. If the sheets are separated, one then holds an electrical charge isolated by the gap between them. Sandwiched between the two discs is a third disc with electrodes,

which bridges the gap and helps a small current to f ow. At a top speed of 3000 revolutions per minute, the device generated 1.5 watts. This gave it an energy eff ciency of 24 per cent, three times greater than piezoelectric, the previously best source of mechanical electricity harvesting, and as eff cient as magnetic-induction turbines. It can run on a gentle wind or tap water, or “random jerky motions”, including human movement, to provide the rotation, Wang says. “As long as there is mechanical action, there is power that can be generated.” The prototype used copper for the rotator and gold for the electrodes in lab tests, but these could easily be substituted for low-cost synthetics, he adds. The team is working on ways to scale up tribo-electric energy for harvesting power from the ocean. AAP

SMSF BASICS

Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

S

elf-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs) have been growing at an incredible rate in recent years and the ATO is now looking at how trustees keep house. So, let’s review the basics. The main elements of a SMSF include the trust deed, the trust, the trustee and its members. A SMSF can be likened to a game of backyard cricket. The rules are set out in the trust deed, the trust is an Esky, a place where the assets are held, the members of the fund are the players and the trustee is the umpire. The trustee ensures the rules are followed, making sure, for example, that players don’t visit the Esky too early.

]

THE WEEK THAT WAS

Unlike your average game of backyard cricket where the rules are determined by the host, in the SMSF realm the ATO is boss. It could be compared to a neighbour who refuses to throw the ball back after a player has hit a six-and-out. It also has the ability to take up to half the contents of the Esky and shut down the game. SMSFs must have a maximum of four members. All members must be trustees and there can be no other trustees. No member is allowed to be an employee of another member (or of an associated person), unless they are a relative of a member, and trustees generally can’t receive remuneration for their trustee duties. The trust deed in effect sets out provisions to govern the trust. It is important the provisions take into consideration things that may happen now and possibly in the future. The trustee is liable for the fund’s actions. It must ensure the fund complies with legislation, regulations and the provisions set out in the trust deed to ensure the fund is entitled to the tax concessions that apply to complying funds. The role of

trustee may be carried out through a company or by the trustees personally. Superannuation legislation places the same responsibilities on corporate trustee directors as it does on individual trustees. As trustee, the legislation requires you to act honestly in all matters; exercise the same degree of care, skill and diligence as an ordinary prudent person; act in the best interest of fund members; keep the fund’s assets separate from other assets and develop and implement an investment strategy. The list is achievable but penalties are extreme. Trustees can engage other people to do certain acts on their behalf, like a f nancial planner or an accountant. But the trustees are bound to retain control over the fund. The ultimate responsibility and accountability for running the fund in a prudent manner lies with the trustees. Are you the right person for a SMSF? Chris Harris is an authorised representative (no 435773) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. AIMING FOR THE SKY If you think the cloud means we could be in for some rain, then Cloudbiz might be just what your business needs. Technology is changing at rapid rates and some businesses are getting left behind as they stick to the procedures they are familiar and comfortable with. The second annual Cloudbiz conference, sponsored by Poole Group, features an impressive line-up of industry leaders and aims to educate local businesses about the benef ts of doing business in the cloud and how new technology can improve eff ciency and make a business more cost-effective.

MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

Poole Group partner Greg Tuckwell says there is still a lot of confusion among local businesses. “I think a lot of people are still not too sure what it is, they’re still a bit concerned about it,” Tuckwell says. “This is about just changing the way they do business.” To help you get your business into the future, Cloudbiz experts will talk about managing businesses and embracing technology. Traff ka’s Matt Forman is a digital marketing expert, Paul Fritsch is Telstra’s cloud services expert and Shaun Keating from ANZ will be talking about

leading-edge banking technologies. And for the entrepreneurs, Mick O’Hagan will provide an insight into how he manages eight businesses in four countries. Tuckwell says the solutions being presented will not suit every business but all businesses should be able to take something from the conference that will help them understand the changing technology and introduce more

eff cient processes. And he says the conference is equally as important for small business owners as it is for bigger businesses. CloudBiz will be held at the Caloundra Events Centre on Thursday April 3. Tickets to the full-day event are $125 per person, including lunch. To register visit www.poolegroup. com.au/cloudbiz-2014.

MAKE/MODEL NISSAN PATHFINDER Ti DETAILS Five-door, seven-seat full-sized luxury SUV with six-cylinder petrol engine and constantly variable automatic transmission; choice of 2WD or 4WD.

NISSAN’S SOFT SIDE WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

R

ough and tough is out, and leather and luxury is in at Nissan. The Japanese brand’s two most robust off-roaders have received highend makeovers, shedding their muddy boots and hairy arms in the process. First Nissan’s legendary Patrol – one of the most enduring 4WD nameplates on the planet – was relaunched in 2013 with luxury features to rival many prestige sedans. Now the Pathf nder, the other half of Nissan’s former bushbashing brigade, has revealed a fresh look after a similar softening-up treatment.

Gone are the rubberised f oor mats, hardy fabrics and rumbling diesel engine. They have been replaced by masses of leather and laminate, delivering a ref ned driving experience no self-respecting Pathf nder owner would recognise. That’s hardly a bad thing – both the Patrol and the Pathf nder are glorious, beautifully engineered machines in their new guise. But it certainly marks a change of direction for Nissan, driven, no doubt, by the ever-more sophisticated array of cars masquerading as off-roaders in a crowded market.

Nissan, of course, has its share of those – its 4WD or SUV models number in double f gures – but the Patrol and Pathie had somehow resisted the fashion. No more. Admittedly, we drove the new Pathf nder in its most upmarket form – the kitted-out Ti model, which comes complete with heated and cooled seats trimmed in the most supple leather, premium Bose audio piped to all three rows of occupants, and video screens for the rear-seat passengers. But even in its most basic form, I suspect this new Pathf nder will be a far more salubrious thing than any of its predecessors. It will go head to head in the market with Toyota’s just-relaunched Kluger – itself an ever-more spacious and luxurious machine. continued page 36>

TECH STUFF 3.5-litre direct-injection V6 engine produces 190kW, 325Nm; X-Tronic constantly variable transmission (CVT) features all-mode 4x4 system on AWD models. FEATURES Six airbags, f ve-star safety rating with stability control, traction control, ABS with brake assist and EBD, auto wipers and headlights; full-length panoramic glass roof, eight-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, reversing camera with predictive path display, all-round view parking assist; premium Bose entertainment system with rear-seat video displays; leather trim, heated and cooled electric front seats; electric windows and mirrors; electric rear tailgate. THIRST 10.2L/100KM (4WD model). VERDICT Nissan takes the soft option. BOTTOM LINE From $70,381 (plus on road costs) as tested.

<from page 34 The Pathf nder is built in the US, primarily for an American market. That explains its ever-growing size and list of features. There will be three trim levels offered on the Pathf nder, each with a choice of all-wheel-drive or front-wheel-drive conf guration. The ST two-wheel-drive gets the ball rolling at a tick under $40 grand; the ST-L steps things up a notch from about $50 grand, while the f agship Ti model will set you back north of $70,000. All Pathf nders will share the same 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine combined with Nissan’s X-Tronic Constantly Variable Transmission. All-wheel-drive models get a fairly sophisticated all-mode system that allows the driver to choose between Auto and Lock (serious off-road) modes, and even two-wheel-drive. Delivering the Pathf nder’s 190 kilowatts and 325 Newton metres to the ground is the seamless, smoothdriving CVT gearbox that features in many of Nissan’s sedan and soft-roader models. This transmission has in the past experienced some issues when soft-roaders have been called on to do

some heavier-than-normal off-roading, so it remains to be seen how the CVT performs in the conditions the Pathf nder has traditionally occupied. Or perhaps it ref ects a more urban target market than previous models. We didn’t get the chance to test it on the soft stuff – our week-long ride in the Pathf nder was restricted to paved city streets and some open-road running, where this newly ref ned and urbanised machine seems entirely at home. Impressively, the big V6

manages an off cial thirst of 10.2 litres per 100 kilometres, or as low as 9.9L/100km in the two-wheel-drive models, which belies its kerb weight of more than 2700 kilograms. However, there are times when that weight is evident, particularly when accelerating from a standstill. Driven less aggressively, it keeps the engine nicely in its sweet spot. That was one of the few chips we could knock off the Pathf nder. It’s spacious, extremely comfortable and, in the case

of the Ti, massively well equipped. Climate control can be adjusted in all three rows in the Ti, as can the high-end Bose entertainment system. The Pathf nder’s interior is thoughtfully arranged. A sliding rear seat allows easy access to the two third-row seats, plus the ability to provide extra leg room to back-row passengers. There are clever storage nooks, plus 10 cup holders, six bottle holders, four 12-volt power outlets and an array of grocery hooks. Underpinning its f ve-star safety rating are six airbags; dynamic stability control, traction control, ABS with brake assist and EBD, tyre pressure monitors and ISOFIX child restraints. Nissan claims its 2700 kilogram towing capacity puts it best in class, and a Tow Mode feature ensures the transmission keeps the engine in its maximum torque band. Downhill it optimises engine braking. Nissan stops short of saying the Pathf nder can match the off-road ability of previous models, instead claiming it maintains its “adventurous ability”. I guess we’re all guilty of getting a little softer as we grow older.

supplier as the tiles on the Sydney Opera House. However, it is the home’s free-form design and artistic credentials which really make it stand out. Originally built by Tom Breen, who is managing director of Breen Holdings and father to New York-based professional violinist Ben Breen, the property was designed was to create a circular music space that allowed for optimal chamber music acoustics. The house was named Apollo Gate, after the Greek god of music, and has no visible square angles. Since its construction, the property has hosted performances by the Conservatorium String Quartet and the Sutherland Theatre Company, and recently hosted an art exhibition. It was last listed for sale for more than $3.5 million and will be auctioned by Ray White Rockdale on March 18. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] You’re full of innovative Aries ideas … but Mars is in retrograde mode. So, just because you’ve thought of something doesn’t mean you’ve actually done it. Perhaps it’s time to plan a little more and pontificate a lot less? Venus and Mars boost your charm.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Looking for work? With Venus in your career zone, make sure your outer appearance is as immaculate as your job resumé. On Thursday, it’s time for tentative Taureans to charge out of your comfort zone and do something challenging, exciting – and different.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Mercury is powering through your career zone until April 8. So, the more you communicate with work colleagues, the more progress you’ll make. Lucky opportunities are all around but you have to grab them, before they pass you by. Jupiter favours financial matters until July 16.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Are you making the most of Jupiter being in Cancer? It only happens every 12 years so explore, experiment and be enthusiastic about the opportunities that are around you. On the weekend, use diplomacy to navigate your way through a dispute.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Regal lions love to be number one but putting others first is the secret to fabulous relationships at the moment. Plus find genuine ways to compliment others on work that they do well. Attached cats – be proactive about partnership problems.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Give your Virgo mind a vigorous workout, as the stars stir your curiosity and stimulate your desire for updated information. On Thursday you’re keen to contact friends, in person and online. All types of research are recommended on Friday, as your eye for detail is boosted.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Light-hearted Librans – this week you’ll relate to loved ones in a deeper way than usual, as you strip back the layers of politeness and get to the bottom of relationship issues. The weekend is wonderful for love and romance, as Venus boosts good vibes.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] It’s the perfect week to put on your detective cap as you uncover a secret or research a topic that has always intrigued you. And you won’t have the patience or predilection for superficial conversations. Instead, you’ll seek out meaningful connections.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Get out and about in your local community, as you nurture relationships with neighbours. Mercury/Jupiter aspects on Thursday promise a fun day, full of stimulating mental and physical activities. Communication is the buzz word on the weekend.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] This week your business side goes into overdrive. Others appreciate you being professional, but try to add the personal touch as well. People are looking for practical support and encouragement, rather than Capricorn criticism – however ‘constructive’ it is.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] With vivacious Venus sashaying through your sign you’re on your best behaviour, as you charm the cynics. Attached Aquarians – this weekend, Venus and Mars help you come up with a grand romantic gesture that sweeps your partner off their feet.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] When it comes to travel or education, you’re keen to zoom ahead but there are delays or obstacles forcing you to slow down and tick all the boxes first. Thursday’s stars encourage you to let your hair down and indulge in life’s little luxuries.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

This surf report might well turn into a kite report with what we have experiencing. So no doubt if you are a kite surfer you have been having a blast at our expense! Well fear not my family of old grommets! Sunday might just deliver something as the wind is backing off to f ve knots. So beg your partner for the day off everything. It will be small but should be something to thin the crowds across the open beaches. Now, to refresh your passion why not go grab a new stick at Beachbeat? They always look good lying on your bed! Now if all is lost, pack your car up and head to northern NSW. If you f nd no waves simply burn your boards on the beach and make a sacrif ce because something has got to give! Be happy and remember it could be worse – you could be stuck in a city.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Whiting and bream will be taking yabbies and prawns along Cotton Tree with f athead on the drift around Goat Island. Estuary cod and jew will be in the Cod Hole area and down to the motorway bridge at night using squid and live baits. Mangrove jack are still around in the usual haunts. SURF: Quality dart are taking pippies from Mudjimba and Maroochy North Shore. Catch chopper tailor and bream at Pincushion using white bait, and trevally are taking ‘poppers’ early morning. OFFSHORE: Conditions are not kind to us again this week, but the few hardy souls braving conditions have had no problem f nding and bagging mixed reef f sh and mackerel. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam is returning bass on trolled divers and saratoga on f oated baits. Head to Lake Macdonald for golden perch, bass and spangled perch on live shrimps and small deep-diving lures.

After you have made the move to Caloundra Rise you’ll wish you had done it earlier as the peace of mind it gives you frees you up to go and do all the things you have been waiting to do. Just a short distance to magnif cent beaches and picturesque hinterland. A community style living with regular events, classes and get togethers.
