I
t was hard not to get a little misty-eyed when I was writing this week’s cover story. As a mum and a dog owner, I am a little partial to small creatures – on four legs and two. This week I had decided to investigate the way ‘man’s best friend’ has become indispensable to all levels of society, particularly in relation to providing assistance to those in need. When the name Sarah Grandison came across my desk I had already done some of my research and so was feeling quite affected by the incredible stories of dogs whose loyalty to the human race makes them more than willing and capable helpers. When I spoke with Sarah about her son and his dog Zeus, I wonder if she noticed a little crackle in my voice. Not only does Zeus care for young Tom Grandison and keep him out of danger when Tom is succumbing to an epileptic seizure, but he is now such an invaluable part of the Grandisons’ lives that Sarah can’t imagine not having him around. I went home and gave my dogs an extra big cuddle. I look at the two of them now in a different light, when they rush out to the clothesline when the younger Pearson is in one of his climbing moods, or when they f op down beside his bed when he’s having a tear over a scraped knee. I think even us dog lovers are now only just appreciating how truly intuitive and special our pets really are. Learn more over the page. In a change of pace this week Sam Walker has been hitting the grocery shops to discover how local consumers are set to benef t from the reinvigoration of the supermarket landscape. Head over to page 16 for Jemma Pearson that and more local news.

Taking the lead Not just f oppy ears and adorable eyes, dogs are proving indispensable for many local families, writes Jemma Pearson.

ccording to the Australian Companion A l more than h a third h d off Animall Council, Australian households own a dog. Estimates on the number of pet dogs around the country vary from about 2.5 to four million, and if you take a walk in any Sunshine Coast suburb or dog-friendly park or beach, it seems us locals are doing our fair share to contribute to that number. Dog lovers will spruik the virtues of having a companion animal, and there is no doubt these are beloved members of thousands of Coast families, but for centuries dogs have also been bred for herding livestock, guarding homes and businesses, pulling loads, and even heading into space. For anyone that has travelled, the customs and border protection dogs are a familiar sight. Trained to detect narcotics, explosives and f rearms, these energetic animals are an important line of defence. Military dogs, some of them from animal rescue groups, also provide invaluable assistance for members of our defence forces. And the 62 animals that form the Queensland Police Service’s Dog Squad also help with f rearm, explosive and drug detection. But it’s perhaps in their role as assistance animals and in medical detection that we are only just realising the potential of our four-legged mates. Guide dogs are probably the most well-known of assistance animals but dogs are also being used to help sufferers of Alzheimer’s, there are hearing dogs and those that help people with disabilities, and dogs are being trained to detect disease. Noosa local Sarah Grandison has had f rst-hand [ 8 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ M ARCH 21, 2014

he is with him every other minute of the day, and, according to Grandison, “Zeus knows when the [school] bus is coming down the street”. Zeus’s role is to alert the family when Tom is going to have a seizure, but Grandison says Zeus is also vigilant in ensuring Tom doesn’t get into any other sort of trouble – he will also alert the family

Every dog is unique.” And Tom’s dog Zeus is trained specif cally to detect seizures. Zeus came from Smart Pups, a Maroochydorebased charity that has been helping families for the past couple of years. “We see lots of pups in the training jackets around Noosa,” says Grandison, adding that Smart Pups places dogs with children with autism and epilepsy. Most of the charity’s dogs go into homes at around 12 to 14 months of age, after a foster family has taken care of them as pups and during their training. While Zeus doesn’t accompany Tom to school
if he feels Tom may be in danger – “Things like if Tom heads downstairs by himself, Zeus is there like a shot. He hasn’t been taught that, it is just him. He looks out for him.” After just two years as part of the family “they have bonded so well”. When Tom is about to have a seizure, Zeus alerts the family then lies down next to Tom to ensure his safety and reassure him. “When Tom comes out of a seizure Zeus is always there,” says Grandison. “It is also to stop Tom hurting himself. Zeus is good at wedging himself up against him.” Dogs like Zeus are trained to detect a M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

FAST FACTS Assistance Dogs Australia is a national charity that trains labradors and golden retrievers to help people with disabilities perform tasks such as opening and closing cupboards, pushing the pedestrian button at traff c lights, grabbing the phone and even unloading the washing.

pheromone that is given off by the body when a person is about to have a seizure. Humans are oblivious, says Grandison, when the chemical change occurs, but dogs can smell it on the breath of their companions. “It is common that the dogs go to the mouth and that is where the smell is coming from,” says Grandison, describing an incident when the family was in the car and Zeus sensed a seizure coming – he nuzzled his head under Tom’s chin to lift the airway. It wasn’t necessarily something he was trained to do though – “Zeus just knew”. “How they teach them to bark on command is amazing,” says Grandison. “Zeus is great like that; he doesn’t like children in distress in general.” Grandison says there was a time when Tom was having 20 seizures a day. “At the moment he is maybe having three or four seizures a week. “Zeus acts funny and I think ‘what is wrong with the dog’ and then I realise something is not right with Tom, but it doesn’t always manifest into a full-blown seizure. Dogs pick up on that. “It is funny but all the families that have a dog for an epileptic child say the seizures drop off once they get the dog – they can’t explain it,” she says, adding “Zeus def nitely has a calming inf uence.” Grandison says she now can’t imagine life without him. “He is also is just a lovely family pet.”

Guide Dogs Queensland was established in 1960. There are currently around 85 people in the state using guide dogs as their main mobility aid.
What’s so special about dogs?
“It is funny but all the families that have a dog for an epileptic child say the seizures drop off once they get the dog – they can’t explain it. Zeus def nitely has a calming inf uence.”
While most humans rely predominantly on sight to get around, it’s a dog’s sense of smell that is most important to this animal. A dog’s brain is much smaller than a human’s, but the part of it that controls smell is about 40 times bigger than yours or mine. And while the average human has about f ve million scent glands, a dog has as many as 300 million, making them tens or even hundreds of thousands of times more sensitive to smell. But it’s not just the nose that makes these animals so clever. Dogs detect a greater frequency of sounds – that’s why a high-pitched dog whistle is undetectable to us but not to them. That animal instinct is also strong in dogs – they can interpret human emotions such as fear and anger. And many pet owners will tell you their dogs can sense danger and they know when their masters are coming home.

Medical mutts So what makes dogs so extraordinarily helpful? Apart from an innate ability to please, it perhaps all comes down to their sensitivity. As well as being able to detect epilepsy, diabetes and allergies, the potential of a dog’s sense of smell to detect cancer is now being explored. Chemical changes occur in the body when diseases are present and these can be detected by dogs on the breath or in the sweat. That’s because dogs have a sense of smell that can be up to 100,000 times stronger than humans. In 2011, researchers for UK charity Medical Detection Dogs found that dogs could identity a compound on people’s breath that changes during the initial stages of bladder cancer. Last year’s creation of a device
Want to help?
called the Odoreader was made possible by the dogs’ cancer work. The device detects chemicals related to bladder cancer in the urine of patients. Two years earlier, researchers at a German hospital discovered dogs could detect lung cancer. Dogs can also sniff out possible allergens in food or products, and alert those with an allergy, to say peanuts or latex, to avoid that product or food.
Most assistance dog organisations rely heavily or solely on donations. There are a few ways you can help, either by fostering a puppy, volunteering your time or giving money. Here are a few organisations that need your help: • Local organisation Smart Pups trains and places dogs that improve the quality of life for children with autism and seizure-related conditions. As well as becoming a loved family pet, the dogs give children independence and provide help and peace of mind to families. Go to smartpups.org.au. • Seeing Eye Dogs Australia provides dogs to assist people who are blind or vision impaired. Go to seda.visionaustralia.org. • Guide Dogs Queensland also provides dogs for the blind and vision impaired. Head to guidedogsqld.com.au. • Lion’s Hearing Dogs provide dogs for the hearing impaired. THE WAY WE SHOP
T
he expansion of independent supermarkets and the introduction of Aldi stores across the Sunshine Coast is putting the buying power back into the hands of the consumer. While some residents choose the big two chains – which have dominated the Sunshine Coast grocery shopping scene for decades, because of convenience and competitive pricing – others have welcomed alternative options and are prepared to go
out of their way to access them. More than 30 IGA stores of various sizes are now operating across the Sunshine Coast with the IGA Marketplace Wises Road at Maroochydore the latest of the independent stores to open. It is also one of the biggest. IGA Marketplace Wises Road owner Brad Hopper says his store, which employs 100 people, offers a more concept-style supermarket. “It’s about good food, not f ne food, and great people,” Hopper says.

It’s also about customer service and the consumer experience. Staff will walk people to their cars and not make them go to the car to f nd the 10 cents they are short of when they get to the register. He says it’s the kind of service that empowers small businesses. “I think consumers are just enjoying that sense of belonging and having their store,” Hopper says. “The big one is having their brands – having the things they like. All the things Coles and Woolworths are going out of.” He says about 98 per cent of his IGA’s produce is Australian and where possible he stocks products made on the Sunshine Coast. Coast residents also have f ve ALDI stores to choose from, located in Noosaville, Nambour, Maroochydore, Brightwater and Caloundra, with a sixth to open at Kawana Shoppingworld. An ALDI Australian spokesperson says since opening its f rst Australian stores the chain has changed the way Australians view

supermarket shopping by introducing the concept of discount retailing. “The current retail market has created savvy shoppers who seek our true value – that is, high quality at low prices,” the spokesperson says. “This f ts very well with our business model and is something ALDI Australia has strived for since we opened our f rst store in 2001.” He says ALDI is also a supporter of a signif cant number of Australian suppliers and is a corporate partner of the Australian Made Australian Grown campaign. Michael Jones from Caloundra is one resident applauding the increasing diversity of supermarkets across the Coast. He is opposed to “the stranglehold” the duopoly of Coles and Woolworths has had on consumers. “I think they are destroying business in Australia – small business – in the name of prof ts,” he says. “We won’t buy our meat there, we won’t buy our fruit and vegies

News Previews
IGA Marketplace Wises Road owner Brad Hopper says the long-term future of supermarket shopping is with stores the size of his, which people will visit several times a week for their fresh groceries there. We only buy our grocery items there and that’s under sufferance.” And he says he will happily drive 10 kilometres past Coles and Woolworths to access more community-minded grocery stores. Certainly IGA is known for its community input and Hopper says the My IGA Card program gives customers special discounted prices while enabling them to choose from a list of community groups to give reward points to. With the exception of Surf Life Saving Queensland the groups are all local clubs and charities. While many supermarkets change the price of
products depending on the location of the store, ALDI has introduced a National Pricing Policy, which means customers pay the same at any ALDI store regardless of where they live. However the spokesperson says fresh produce is sourced directly from local suppliers and pricing can vary depending on the season and the supplier. Hopper says the long-term future of supermarket shopping is with stores the size of his, which people will visit several times a week for their fresh groceries. He says people will then visit “big box” supermarkets once every few weeks to buy big bulk goods as cheaply as they can.
COMMUNITY INCLUSION THE KEY The Endeavour Foundation’s new learning and lifestyle centre at Lake Kawana is set to benef t local people with a disability, their families and carers. Endeavour Foundation CEO David Barbagallo says the centre will enable people with a disability to interact with a wide range of community members as well as having easy access to public transport, community organisations and sporting opportunities around the lake. “We must include opportunities for people with a disability to be included in all aspects of life because inclusion is the driving philosophical force behind national disability reform,” Barbagallo says. The Endeavour Foundation partnered with the State Government to deliver the service. NAMBOUR HAS BEST CLUB Nambour RSL’s Altro cafe was awarded Queensland’s best club cafe/coffee shop at the Keno and Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence last week. It was the third year running Altro has taken out the award, in a narrow win. The club also took out the Best Club Sunshine Coast award.

or 35 years the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge has been rescuing homeless cats and dogs and re-housing them with loving families. It’s not that all the animals surrendered to SCAR are unloved. Often changed circumstances mean it’s impossible and sometimes unfair for people to keep their pets. SCAR operations manager Penny Brischke says with the trying economic conditions on the Coast many young men, in particular, are surrendering their dogs because of f y-in-f y out jobs that take them away from home for extended periods. She says some families are forced to sell their homes and move into rentals and cannot take their pets with them. “The Sunshine Coast has quite a low rate of pet-friendly rental accommodation,” she says. In other instances elderly people who move into aged care often have to surrender their pets. Brischke says the not-for-prof t organisation at

BC is a senior cat in need of a quiet loving home Sippy Creek, which can hold 70 dogs and 50 cats, is a happy place, especially with its no euthanasia policy. However, adoptions have been slow and Brischke says the cattery is full – there were no cat adoptions last week. She is hoping someone will open their home to BC, a 14-year-old domestic short-haired torti who has been surrendered twice – the second time because the family’s original cat was too stressed at having a new cat in the home. Get behind the wheel Do young drivers drive like their parents, how do they modify their behaviour when someone else is in the car, why do young drivers have higher crash rates than older drivers and how can young drivers keep themselves and others safe on the road? International, national and University of the Sunshine Coast researchers will explore these questions at a seminar to be held later this month. USC’s Dr Bridie Scott-Parker says Dr Bruce Simons-Morton, an expert from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Maryland, is making the trip from the US to discuss the causes and prevention of risky teenage driving. “He will provide comparisons in driving performance among teenagers and their parents, among teenagers in the presence of passengers and after parental interventions, and the variations in risk due to passenger presence and social norms,” Scott-Parker says.
Dr Bridie Scott-Parker “It will be fantastic to engage with the USC community and the wider Sunshine Coast community to share this latest research,” she adds. Members of the public are welcome at the seminar to be held at the university’s Innovation Centre from 2.30am to 12.30pm on March 27. Call 5456 5595 for more information or to register.

Going green for Sophie A fun-raiser family day being held in April aims to raise money and awareness for the family of a Mountain Creek toddler who is unable to eat. Sophie Gray has lived on water and medicated formula since she was rushed to hospital with abdominal pain and bleeding from the bottom at the age of four months. Doctors have still not been able to determine the cause of her severe reaction to all kinds of food. The Limed Off fun-raiser will be held to help the family with ongoing medical expenses and visits to specialists, and to raise awareness about the plight of children like Sophie with rare and unexplained illnesses. Family friend and event organiser Kara Taylor says it is terrible seeing a little girl who can’t behave like a normal child. “It just breaks your heart to see a child not being able to eat,” Taylor says. She is encouraging everyone to

Bits and Bytes >> Samsung Galaxy 5S
$2.99 (IOS) $3.50 (Android)
The latest version of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy line foregoes the gimmickry and focuses on the simple things Samsung says consumers want: longer battery life, a beefed-up camera, and durability. The phone is completely resistant to dust and can be immersed in up to a metre of water for 30 minutes, while the camera shoots in 16 megapixels and offers the fastest auto-focus function in any phone – a super-quick 0.3 seconds. Meanwhile, a power-saving mode, which turns the screen black and white, and cuts functionality down to the bare essentials such as internet and email, slashes power consumption in half. The major technological innovations include a f ngerprint scanner built into the home button and an infrared light on the back, which can measure users’ heart rates via their f ngertips. The phone is expected to hit Australian shelves in mid to late April. Pricing hasn’t been disclosed, but if it’s in keeping with previous models, expect something around the $900 mark. AAP
There are many stargazing apps on the market but by far the most spectacular is Star Walk. It is an interactive guide to the night sky, following your mobile device’s every movement in real time and enabling you to discover hundreds of thousands of celestial bodies. Whether you simply want to f nd out where constellations are, or would like to learn facts about the stars, Star Walk is the app for you. The magic experienced the f rst time you hold your device up to the sky is amazing and draws on the power of the mobile device’s inbuilt GPS system and location services. This is a breathtaking app that is worth buying. Star Walk is available for iPad (IOS) for $2.99 and Android for $3.50. PRINT PAYMENTS A REALITY Fingerprint payment systems will soon be a reality for Australians. Online transaction company PayPal is conf dent Aussies will embrace its upcoming f ngerprintbased smartphone payment system. The new system, a partnership between PayPal and Samsung, will enable users of the new Galaxy S5 to verify PayPal payments simply by rolling their f ngertip across a sensor embedded in the home button. The system, which eliminates the need to remember logins and passwords, will be ready as soon as the new phone starts shipping in early April. Australia is one of 26 countries that will have immediate access to the f ngerprint payment system. PayPal’s senior director of development John Lunn says Australians are early adopters of technology – especially smartphones. “Mobile payments are big in Australia,” Lunn says. “We have very high billing penetration into Australian retailers. There’s PayPal pretty much everywhere in Australia now.” Apple’s
iPhone 5s, released in September, also incorporates a f ngerprint sensor but it can be used to authenticate payments only in Apple’s own app store. Apple is rumoured to be working on its own electronic payment system to rival those of companies such as PayPal. In the meantime, the partnership between PayPal and Samsung takes f ngerprint verif cation to the next level, opening its use to potentially millions of vendors worldwide. Lunn says using the f ngerprint technology is quicker than going through the normal process. “It’s so much easier than [entering] a username or password, or even worse, a credit card number, billing address, shipping address – no one’s got time for that.” He says security is another selling point and the system – which is encrypted and sent to PayPal, then decrypted – is very secure. PayPal has experienced exponential growth in mobile phone payments, overseeing nearly $30 billion worth of mobile payments in 2013, more than double the 2012 f gure. “Once you use this you won’t want to use usernames and passwords again,” Lunn says.

he 2014 Sunshine Coast Business Expo will feature journalist and breakfast presenter Lisa Wilkinson as the headline speaker. Event chair and president of the Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce Ross Hepworth is thrilled to be welcoming Wilkinson to the event, which he says is shaping up to be one of the best and biggest yet. Wilkinson, who was appointed editor of Dolly magazine at the age of 21 and editor of Cleo at 25 where she doubled the magazine’s circulation, will discuss business growth and how businesses can plan for it. “Business growth is a particularly hot issue for Sunshine Coast business people, given it’s been a tough few years and those businesses who have made it through will be looking at how to grow sustainably as things start to pick up momentum,” Hepworth says. “While Lisa may currently be best known for her role as co-host of the Today show, she will also be drawing on her stellar media career when presenting at the expo this year.” In addition to the expo’s 60 business exhibitors, the event will include 40 booths in the Jobs & Skills Market, which will aim to place hundreds of jobseekers into real jobs on the second day of the expo. Local employment co-ordinator Kris McCue says the Jobs & Skills Market will offer more than 200 jobs across the booths, which will be hosted by various jobseeker and recruitment agencies and local
Business growth is a particularly hot issue for Sunshine Coast business people, given it’s been a tough few years businesses with vacant positions. “We expect to get over 500 attendees through the Jobs & Skills Market, giving them the opportunity to present their resumes, be interviewed and hopefully get placed in a job at the end of the event,” McCue says. The expo will be held at the TAFE Mooloolaba campus on May 28 and 29. Visit scbizexpo.org.au for more information, or to secure tickets to the Lisa Wilkinson lunch and the Jobs & Skills Market.

AGED-CARE CHANGES

W
e have previously discussed the complex area of aged care and the associated fees and charges payable when moving into care. To complicate this issue even further there are significant changes to the way these fees are calculated coming into effect from July 1. There has been a lot of press lately about how the Federal Government must explore ways to reduce some of their expenses or taxes will need to increase. Because people are living longer the government has realised an ever-increasing portion of its revenue must be allocated to aged care. To
MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

help reduce costs in this area major changes have been made to this area with the aim of saving the government money and encouraging greater investment by other organisations in the area of aged care. Essentially people with greater means will be asked to pay more for their care while those with lower means will continue to have the majority of their fees met by the government. The new rules will apply only to people entering from July 1 onwards. Existing residents will generally remain subject to the current system of fees and charges. We provide below an overview of how the new system will operate. The distinction between low and high level care will be removed. There will be only one type of approval for aged care with all new residents subject to the same fee structure. At the time of entry into care an accommodation payment will replace the current system of either paying an accommodation bond or
accommodation charge. The new accommodation payment will be calculated taking into account both your assessable income and assets. To allow for an easier comparison, aged care providers will be required to publish the current level of accommodation payments they charge showing the daily accommodation payments and the equivalent lump sum amounts. The change that will be felt by most people will be replacing the income-tested fee with a meanstested care fee. As the name suggests the new ongoing fee will be determined taking into account your income and assets, including a notional value of $144,500 for the family home in some instances. The means-tested care fee will be subject to annual and lifetime caps.

Dogs feel no shame
T
THAT HANG-DOG LOOK YOUR FOUR-LEGGED MATE GIVES YOU WHEN HE DIGS UP THE GARDEN OR WRECKS YOUR FAVOURITE CHAIR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FEELING GUILTY.
he next time you start shaking your finger and shouting “Shame on you!” because your dog chewed up your favourite slippers, just remember that no matter how guilty your dog looks, it doesn’t know what your rant is about. Behaviourists insist dogs lack shame. The guilty look – head cowered, ears back, eyes droopy – is a reaction to the tantrum you are throwing now over the damage the dog did hours earlier. “Just get over it and remind yourself not to put temptation in the way next time,” says Dr Bonnie Beaver, a professor at Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and executive director of the American College of Veterinary Behaviourists. But scientif c f ndings have not put a dent in the popularity of online dog-shaming sites like dogshaming.com and shameyourpet.com or videos such as those posted on youtube.com/ crackrockcandy. In the photos and videos, dogs wear humorous written ‘confessions’ and often are surrounded by the remnants of their misdeeds. There is no question that in some photos, they look guilty of eating, drinking, chewing, licking or destroying something they shouldn’t have. Dogshaming.com was the f rst and is among the most popular sites. Since Pascale Lemire started it in August 2012, it has received more
than 58 million page views and more than 65,000 submissions. A submission has to come with a photo showing the dog’s guilty look. Lemire, who lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, also published a book called Dog Shaming, which hit the New York Times bestseller list in January. “I don’t think dogs actually feel shame,” Lemire says. “I think they know how to placate us with this sad puppy-dog look that makes us think they’re ashamed of what they’ve done. My guess is that their thinking is: ‘Oh man, my owner is super mad about something, but I don’t know what, but he seems to calm down when I give him the sad face, so let’s try that again’.” She thinks the online dog-shaming memes are all in good fun. “People come for a laugh and camaraderie,” Lemire says. “They see that their dog isn’t the only one who does awful things. People don’t shame their dogs out of anger, they do it out of love.” One of the f rst scientif c studies on the ‘guilty dog look’ was conducted in 2009 by Alexandra Horowitz, an associate professor of psychology at Barnard College in New York City. One of her books, Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know, included the f ndings. In the study, she used 14 dogs, videotaping them in a series of trials and studying how they reacted when an owner left the room after telling
them not to eat a treat. When the owners returned, sometimes they knew what the dogs had done and sometimes they didn’t and sometimes the dogs had eaten the treats and sometimes they hadn’t. “I found that the ‘look’ appeared most often when owners scolded their dogs, regardless of whether the dog had disobeyed or did something for which they might or should feel guilty. It wasn’t ‘guilt’ but a reaction to the owner that prompted the look,” Horowitz says. “I am not saying that dogs might not feel guilt, just that the ‘guilty look’ is not an indication of it,” she adds. She also believes there is a difference between guilt and shame. Dogs can certainly learn from bad behaviour but rewards or punishment are most effective right after the wrongdoing, says Beaver, the veterinary professor. “The farther it gets from that, the less connection is made with the behaviour,” she adds. At some point, your dog will probably cower, waiting for you to complete your meltdown, ditch the negative voice and lose the nasty body language, Beaver says. AAP

strangest
Cosmetics’ ingredients Cosmetics companies are constantly f nding new ways to create effective and innovative products – and the key to revolutionary products are the sometimes strange and unlikely new ingredients, reports beautydirectory.com.au. Earlier this month Dr LeWinn’s launched its Eternal Youth day and night cream – which features a hexapeptide that mimics the properties of the ‘immortal jellyf sh’, while Gwyneth Paltrow boasts using a face cream containing snake venom. And who can forget Kim Kardashian’s vampire facial. Now US researchers are saying chicken feathers could be effective in a number of beauty products. US-based researcher Walter Schmidt, who f rst patented the idea in 1998, believes that the protein present in the feathers’ keratin could be used in many ways. “The feather f bre grinds to powdery talc making
the keratin useful in beauty products,” says Schmidt, who is now commercialising the idea. Keratin is a popular ingredient in cosmetics, playing a role in shampoo and conditioners to add hydration and restore hair thickness. Cosmeticsdesign.com reports that other unusual ingredients set to be found in products in 2014 include egg yolk, bee venom and even shark squalene.

According to a recent Chiropractors Association of Australia report, back pain affects 2 million Australians each year.
“The problem occurs if the stressful situation is not temporary and our bodies can’t get out of this physiological state.”
“This is such a widespread problem that impacts us all.” Says Dr David Hendrey, Chiropractor from Lake Kawana. “When one person in the family is suffering, everyone else gets affected. The cost is pain, decreased productivity and increased stress is enormous”.
“Chiropractic work can’t reduce the cause of the stress for you, but it can release the tension building up in your body”
With 19 years of clinical practice and 9 years as a CAA board member Dr Hendrey has gathered extensive experience and knowledge. “Sadly I have noticed an alarming trend is the last 5 years with stress becoming a major cause of irritation on the spine and nerve system. When we are under stress, the hormones cortisole and adrenalin are released, causing increased heart rate, respiration rate, our nerves get pre-excited and our muscles get ready for a fight or flight response. At the same time our digestive system, our immune system and reproductive system are temporarily down-regulated or in layman’s terms: reduced in function while all our bodies resources are channelled into fighting off the stressful situation.”
“Your spine is an engineering masterpiece, with 24 movable bones joined together with ligaments, muscles and discs. The unique shape of the bones of the spine allows protection to the spinal cord. Unfortunately the spine can begin to tighten and stiffen up thru poor posture, injuries and accidents or even stress,” he says. Hendrey Chiropractic on Lake Kawana is situated overlooking the beautiful Lake in the Private Hospital building. The centre has the latest diagnostic equipment using Direct Digital X-ray equipment, and Digital postural examinations. “Our patients love the fact that we have invested the money and they don’t need to go anywhere else to have an accurate look at the condition of their spinal system. After all when you can see exactly what is wrong, it makes treatment more specific.”
A common question that we hear all the time, is “How do I know if I have a spinal problem?” the common indicators we see every day are:
Back aches and pains Headaches and sore necks Leg and arm pains Postural problems Stiffness and tension Whiplash

Autumn change The staff at Strut Hair in Maroochydore write about the new season trends in hair. On the Sunshine Coast our seasons are not as clearly def ned as they are in other parts of the country, but like fashion, hair does vary according to the season. With autumn already upon us we are expecting a strong movement from the vibrant fresh tones of summer to a richer palette of deep naturals drawing inspiration from nature. Rich natural tones complement the fashion of the season, and a general deepening of the blondes out there is to be expected. Brunettes will be enhanced by adding honey highlights to give a shine and gloss to their luscious tresses. Watch for rich browns, soft copper tones, honeycomb highlights and muted mahogany hues to align with the colours of the season. In autumn the vibrant colours associated with summer fashions are generally muted to a more ref ned old-world classic beauty and richness – think Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. The key words for the season tend towards nourishment and enrichment, so if you’re guarded about altering the colour of your locks, focus on enriching and smoothing them by using treatment products that also add shine such as Kevin Murphy Shimmer Shine spray. Shimmer Shine spray is perfect for autumn weather as it is both a nourishing reconstructive treatment for damaged dry hair while adding cosmetic shimmer to your tresses for styling perfection.

Aussies open up Australians are becoming more open about their mental health problems, according to a study led by Orygen Youth Health Research Centre. This is most likely because of changing attitudes and improved knowledge, says lead researcher Dr Nicola Reavley, from the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. The study shows the number of people prepared to disclose experiences of depression and early schizophrenia has signif cantly increased since 1995. There has also been an increase in the number seeking help for depression. “We know people are better at recognising the symptoms of depression than they used to be,” Reavley says. “It is also possible that there is less stigma around disclosure, although we still have a lot of work to do in that area.” AAP
7 Biggest Mistakes you could be making that could cause Permanent Depression, Anxiety or ADHD Are you not as happy as you used to be? Is stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, or ADHD overwhelming you? Are anti-depressants not working for you? Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow? We had an incredible response from all who were logged on for the webinar we ran about one of my favourite topics – Solving the puzzle that creates Anxiety Depression & ADHD. When you put it all together, it all makes sense. There are 7 key underlying triggers which can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them.
The 7 key common triggers that affect your brain, cause a compounding effect that your brain cannot deal with, which leads to long term, and then permanent brainwave pattern changes, affecting your personality, mood, and ability to think and cope, permanently! Fortunately it can be quite easy to address. Patients who have suffered depression for four decades, have reported to have improved out of sight after one month and other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment, including sufferers of Major Depressive Disorder, and children with ADHD, who have then been able to reduce their medication in less than 7 weeks, and these results are permanent and medication free! Proven with testing, these steps improve brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication, in adults and children. To f nd out more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or view the webinar on our website. A webinar is simply a seminar that you can see on the internet. You just register through the website and it will play for you on your computer. It’s easy and it’s free. MAKE/MODEL LEXUS ES350 SPORTS LUXURY DETAILS Five-seat full-size luxury sedan with V6 petrol engine and six-speed automatic transmission. TECH STUFF 3.5-litre, 32-valve quad-cam V6 produces 204 kilowatts at 6200rpm, 346 Nm at 4700rpm; six-speed automatic transmission with manual sequential shift function; front-wheel-drive.
A LEXUS BY NAME… WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP
T
he marketing material for the new Lexus ES350 paints a romantic picture of how the first versions of this model were developed in the brand’s formative days a few decades ago. It gushes that the genesis began “somewhere on the coast of California, where Lexus designers immersed themselves in the f nest waterfront homes to gain a richer experience of what true luxury actually meant”. There was another theory, in the 1990s, about how Lexus developed the f rst ES models. It took a Toyota Camry and gave it a V6 engine, a decent stereo and nice leather seats.
I guess the truth lies in between. There was a time when Lexus used to cop a lot of f ak about its upmarket cars being little more than “glorif ed Toyotas”. With a couple of exceptions, the argument was not without merit. Some Lexus models barely disguised their Toyota heritage, and perhaps none more so than the f rst ES300. It was, in effect, a Toyota Camry with a new badge and fancy interior. These days, it’s a measure of how far Lexus has come in its “relentless pursuit of perfection” that its entire f eet of luxury vehicles bares little, if any, resemblance to those cars made by its parent company.
Sure, there are some shared technologies – the hybrid engines in some models are very close to those used in Toyota equivalents. But the Lexus brand has earned the right to stand apart from its corporate master. The latest member of the Lexus family, the new ES sits, price-wise at least, between the sporty and stylish IS and GS models. So you’d expect the ES to be, sporty and stylish, right? Not so fast. The new ES350 we’ve driven looks a lot like a Camry. A very fancy Camry, mind you. But as nice as it is, it’s not all that remarkable to drive, at least not compared to other recent releases from Lexus. The engine is powerful and

[ smooth, the automatic transmission impressive, and the cabin is resplendent in leather, timbers and a barrage of buttons. Yet the ES lacks the design f air and driving zest offered by many of its siblings these days. It’s not as sporty as the razor-sharp new IS models, not as sporty-looking as the GS, and while it’s impressively spacious, it can’t come close to matching the roominess and sheer luxury of the f agship LS models. There are a couple of other clues that this new ES is a bit different from its Lexus siblings. It gets a six-speed automatic transmission (albeit a very good one), instead of the eight-speeder featured on just about every other current Lexus model. That transmission gets a manual-shift function, but not the wheel-mounted paddle shifters Lexus has adopted in most models to accentuate their sporty intent. Signif cantly, it drives through the front wheels (like a Camry). It’s the only member of the Lexus sedan range to do so. The ES gets the company’s now customary ‘spindle’ grille treatment but that’s about where the styling similarities end.
It wasn’t until I found myself driving side by side with a new Toyota Aurion (a V6 Camry) that the truth was hard to escape. This really is a Camry – with a V6 engine and lovely leather seats. Well, more than that,
some of its siblings, is similarly ref ned and eff cient. The audio system is superb, as is the Lexus touch system, which allows you to access everything from satellite navigation to digital audio settings with
perhaps. Let’s consider what the ES does exceptionally well. It rides with the kind of velvety levels of comfort and quietness that are the hallmark of Lexus. The engine delivers its 204 kilowatts in a smooth, fuss-free manner and the transmission, while inferior to
a swish of the console-mounted mouse. The ES cabin is also one of the more spacious in the Lexus range. In summary, the ES is a thoroughly impressive, if not totally engaging, way to get around. Perhaps the thing the ES does best is when you come to the

price tag, from a very juicy $72,947 on road for the entry-level ES350 Luxury, and up to $82,259 drive away for the ES350 Sports Luxury we tested. With a dazzling array of electronics and luxury touches, and boasting the extraordinary levels of f nish and attention to detail we’ve come to expect from Lexus, it’s a heck of a lot of car for that money. In many ways, the ES represents what Lexus used to be, before it began to target the German prestige models, and their sharper, more involving driving characteristics. Beautifully f nished and engineered – very posh without being very exciting. It’s signif cant that the ES remains one of the best-selling Lexus models worldwide. I suspect lots of people will happily buy this car, for reasons we’ve just listed, and not give another thought to the things it’s not. They’ll love the comfort and quietness, and they’ll love the company’s legendary “buyer experience. I loved those things, too. I just wish it didn’t remind me quite so much of a Camry.

DRIVERLESS CARS INEVITABLE
A
new era of driverless cars leaves us wondering what drivers will do as they make their way from A to B. Brew an espresso, watch a movie on a large screen, surf the internet or chat with friends? As auto makers and technology f rms steer towards a future of driverless cars, a Swiss think tank was at the Geneva Motor Show this month showing off its vision of what vehicles might look like on the inside when people no longer have to focus on the road. “Once I can drive autonomously, would I want to watch while my steering wheel turns happily from left to right?” asked Rinspeed founder and chief executive Frank Rinderknecht. “No. I would like to do anything else but drive and watch the traff c. Eat, sleep, work, whatever you can imagine.” Google is working on fully autonomous cars and traditional car makers are rapidly developing a range of autonomous technologies
your email at 120 kilometres an hour may sound like a fantasy today, Rinderknecht is convinced it could happen in the not too distant future. Driving, he said, is on the cusp of being redef ned, allowing people to take the wheel for pleasure but hand over control on tedious stretches. Car makers at the Geneva Motor Show agreed that vehicles that drive themselves, at least to a certain extent, are on the horizon. “Autonomous driving is an inevitability that we are approaching very rapidly,” Hyundai Europe chief operating off cer Allan Rushforth said. He stressed though that “full automation” was not a priority. Ford Europe chief Stephen Odelle also said the technology was speeding forward, but believed “the technology will be ready before legislation and consumers are”. And while it will be an upward battle to redef ne liability legislation, “I think it can be done, because laws must adapt to life, and life as we all know changes”, Odelle said. AAP
While brewing coffee at 120 kilometres an hour may sound like a fantasy today … it could happen in the not too distant future as well. With analysts expecting sales of self-driving, if not completely driverless, cars to begin taking off by the end of this decade, Rinderknecht insists it’s time to consider how the experience of riding in a car will be radically redef ned. He envisages a future where car passengers will want to do the kinds of things we do today to kill time on trains and aeroplanes. So Rinspeed has revamped the interior of Tesla’s Model S electric
car to show car makers how they might turn standard-sized vehicles into entertainment centres, off ces and meeting spots. The seats can move into more than 20 positions, allowing passengers to face each other or a 32-inch screen in the back. Up front, an entertainment system lines the length of the dashboard. And of course there is an espresso machine. While brewing coffee, video conferencing and keeping an eye on

BOND CARS FOR SALE A property tycoon has put the world’s largest collection of James Bond cars up for sale. American-based Michael Dezer is asking a cool $39.74 million for the f eet of 60 original vehicles from the James Bond f lms, according to British and German media reports. There is something for everyone, ranging from Odd Job’s Rolls-Royce in Goldfinger, a Lotus Esprit S1 with roof-mounted skis from the Spy Who Loved Me and a tuk-tuk auto rickshaw used in Octopussy. A Russian T55 tank, which crashed through a wall in Goldeneye, is also included. A possible snag for prospective buyers is that the owner prefers to sell the James Bond vehicles as a job lot. “They must stay together,” Barbara Donovan of Mayfair Cars in London told Germany’s Spiegel Online website. She and her husband Stuart are Dezer’s British representatives. Most of the Bond vehicles came
from a museum in the town of Keswick in Britain’s picturesque Lake District. When the owner closed down the attraction, Dezer bought the lot and had them shipped to his museum in Miami, Florida. They joined other automotive screen idols such as the original VW Beetle from the Herbie movies. Over the years Dezer has collected a total of 1800 vehicles. AAP
Volvo trials deliveries to cars Swedish auto maker Volvo says it is developing a system to enable online shopping deliveries direct to customers’ cars rather than their homes. The company has created a single-use digital key, which postal or delivery services can use to locate a vehicle and open it. The system “will allow consumers to have shopping delivered straight to their car, no matter where they are”, the company said in a statement. “Via a smartphone or a tablet, the owner will be informed when a delivery company wants to drop off or pick up something from the car.” The owner of the car then accepts the delivery and can track when the car is opened. The technology will provide a solution for people who are on the move and need to receive deliveries away from their home or off ce. The company said failed deliveries cost courier companies around $1.53 billion in re-delivery costs annually.
“The technology was trialled during a pilot program of 100 people, 86 per cent of which agreed that ‘roam delivery’ saved them time,” Volvo said. “The future car will be much more than just a means of transportation.” The company presented the new technology at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month. What’s your number? NUMEROLOGISTS BELIEVE A HOME’S ‘NUMBER’ AFFECTS ITS ENERGY AND PURPOSE. CALCULATE YOUR HOME’S NUMBER USING THE FORMULA BELOW TO SEE HOW IT CAN IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE.
To calculate your home’s number, add every digit and letter of the street address together and keep adding until you get a single digit together. Ignore the ‘Street’, ‘Avenue’ or ‘Road’ but use the letters of the street name according to the chart below: A=1 B=2 C=3 D=4 E=5 F=6 G=7 H=8 I=9
J=1 K=2 L=3 M=4 N=5 O=6 P=7 Q=8 R=9
S=1 T=2 U=3 V=4 W=5 X=6 Y=7 Z=8
For example, a house at 4 High Street would be: 4 + 8 + 7 + 8 = 27 = 2 + 7 = 9. A unit at 12/4 High Street would be: 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 7 + 8 = 30 = 3 + 0 = 3.

1. The ‘1’ property is ideal for new beginnings, as it promotes exploration and freshness. It’s great for single professionals seeking independence or looking to forge a new path, but can be isolating or lonely for others. 2. A home life built in the ‘2’ property should be warm, peaceful and diplomatic, meaning it’s ideal for newlyweds, young families or those wanting to work from home. With its nurturing base it’s also a good choice for gardeners or decorators. 3. Are you an entertainer? The number ‘3’ property is the home for you, as it’s f lled with positive energy and awareness. A ‘3’ property is also good for creative workers or thinkers. But if you get restless easily or tend to overspend perhaps opt for a more constant space. 4. The ‘4’ property is the dream childhood home – warm, welcoming and stable, which means it’s a solid long-term investment or ideal if you’re choosing a property to retire to. It’s also the perfect place to start or raise a family. 5. The ‘5’ property is dominated by freedom, adventure, and romance, so is great for young singles or couples who tend to welcome guests and come and go as they
please. A ‘5’ property promotes risk so is often bought on impulse. 6. The ‘6’ property is up there with number 4 as the ideal place to raise a family, as it promotes a good balance between domestic life and work. It’s a place centred on harmony and love, and is also a productive place to start a home-based business. 7. The ‘7’ property is all about relationships – marriages, family bonds, business deals and so on. It can be dramatic and full of excitement, so if you’re passionate and feisty go ahead, but if you’re averse to conf ict tread carefully. It’s also a good number for people seeking spiritual enlightenment. 8. The ‘8’ property attracts material wealth and abundance, and is an ideal place to grow investments. It’s the right home for highf yers and business people, but residents must take care to use their money and inf uence wisely, as an ‘8’ property is very sensitive to karma. 9. The ‘9’ property goes with the f ow – it’s about serenity, compassion and natural progression, so is good for those more advanced in life. A keen sense of the natural order will suit humanitarians and activists, but not necessarily those seeking recognition or the f ner things.

MORE BUYERS THAN SELLERS If you’re thinking about selling, now is the time – see below for recent success stories Better than the net We experienced a massive increase in inspections from our MWP campaign. At 7 Parkview Terrace, Buderim we ran a fourweek campaign in MWP. The f rst weekend was internet only and we had just four inspections; the second weekend we had a half-page ad in MWP and had 21 inspections over two days. With advertisements for three consecutive weeks, we then saw a total of 52 inspections. The seller has been extremely pleased with the results of the marketing campaign.
Overwhelming response – again What an overwhelming response from our marketing program in My Weekly Preview for 11 Currimundi Road, Currimundi – we had more than 60 groups enquire resulting in multiple offers and the great news for the sellers was that we had it SOLD within a week. We have a VERY happy seller. Thanks again MWP! Jodie Hedley-Ward Next Property Group
It’s all about numbers To achieve a premium result when selling, you need to attract all the prospective buyers to create competition. A recent four-week campaign in both print and on the internet produced 29 group inspections. MWP produced 21 of those potential buyers, three written offers and the successful purchaser. The result was a record sale in the street and the sellers were very happy. MWP outperforms time and again.
Realty Excellence
Three-week campaign = SOLD 12 Bluebird Parade, Bokarina went to market with a three-week marketing program in MWP, and the results speak volumes. More than 60 groups through the open for inspections produced 10 registered bidders and a sale under the hammer on auction day. Kylie Tredrea Next Property Group
Our recent in-room auction event had to be postponed due the outstanding results from our marketing programs in My Weekly Preview – all but two properties sold prior to auction day. Since the beginning of the year, we have successfully sold more than 90 per cent of all our properties taken to auction. We need more listings and have scheduled our next in-room event for Tuesday April 29. Thanks MWP, you’ve done it again. Steve Perry RE/MAX Property Sales
For the property at 15 Antigua Court, Kawana Island, the f rst advertisement in MWP attracted 11 groups and a cash contract straight after the open home. Thanks MWP – you’ve done it again. Bill Howcroft Howcroft and Associates

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] The new moon’s in your sign so it’s the best week of the year to start projects, and turn dreams into action. But, with Mars in retro mode [until May 20], avoid procrastinating. On Wednesday you’re at your witty best but Thursday’s sun/Pluto square powers up your bossy side.
TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Have you been bustling around like a Bull on steroids? Monday’s new moon encourages you rest and recuperate. So activities like meditation, journal writing, yoga and spiritual study are favoured, as you tune into the thoughtful Taurean within.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Are you surrounded by positive people who dream big dreams? Monday’s new moon energizes your networking zone so it’s a terrific time to pal up with some new friends; make fortuitous work contacts; join a group, club or organization; or re-connect with overseas mates.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] As Jupiter charges through your sign, your motto for the week is from actress Bette Davis “The key to life is accepting challenges.” The New moon shines the spotlight on career plans and projects, so show the world what you are capable of.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Get set for a big week Lions, as you overdo just about everything. Under the influence of Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto you’ll be generous and garrulous; enthusiastic and exhausting; restless and reckless; passionate and pushy.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] It’s not a good week to enter into delicate financial negotiations as retrograde Mars stalls momentum, and your thinking is not as logical. Be patient as you let ideas germinate and plans percolate! Saturday is super for talking, texting and social media.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] With the new moon and Uranus in your relationship zone, loved ones will continue to surprise you. However, the course of true love won’t run smoothly so be prepared. On the weekend you’re in the mood to help others but don’t feel you have to fix their problems.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The new moon encourages you to improve your diet, and boost your fitness levels. Resist the temptation to get stuck in a rut, shake up your routine! The sun/ Pluto square amps up your stubbornness, but the more you try to manipulate others, the more woeful the week will be.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Avoid jumping from the frying pan into the fire! Too much impulsive behaviour this week could leave you full of regrets later on. With Venus moving into your home zone [from April 6 until May 3] find ways you can bring more creativity, and harmony into your environment.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] This week there’s a tendency to blow a family problem way out of proportion. Try to see the current situation from a broader and calmer perspective. Thursday’s Mercury/Saturn trine is super for tackling mental tasks that require concentration and attention to detail.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] You’re keen to break free from your usual routine, as you yearn for unusual and exciting experiences. Use your abundant Aquarian energy to multitask and get things done in record time. But your need for speed makes you more accidentprone so pace yourself.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Security issues are centre stage, as you search for ways to improve your financial situation. Be a patient Pisces and focus on long-term solutions – quick fixes just won’t work. Don’t believe everything you hear on Friday, as some information will be second-hand and hard to verify.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
Who scored some waves? Double Island last Saturday was the pick, although a long-time G-Land charger has stated he got one of the best barrels of his life at Wurtulla – a big call when you consider who it was! Have a friend f ying out today to spend 10 days staying at the Billabong house at Pipeline and to make life worse he has the audacity to ask for my coff n bag for his boards. I am going to call this summer the worst on record for surf. So many onshore winds it is beyond measure. Also just heard on the ABC that pilots report there has been a huge increase in air turbulence. Not sure if there is a link but something has not been right this summer. Thank God I scored Sumatra! Waves are starting again from Sunday, although not surf ng has made me put on f ve kilos. Where’s that chocolate cake!? I always eat when I’m depressed.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Bream around a kilo are prolif c on the rising tide from the mouth of Eudlo Creek to Chambers Island in the Maroochy River. Mullet f llet cut into strips suited to hook size are the preferred bait. Whiting are taking yabbies in front of Picnic Point boat ramp. Find f athead and mud crabs around Bli Bli Bridge. SURF: The hot spot for trevally and tailor is Pincushion in the mouth of the Maroochy, either casting shiny chrome lures or f oating pillies with dawn and dusk best. Catch dart and quality sea bream from Twin Waters beach track to the Maroochy Bar. OFFSHORE: Parrot, grassy sweetlip and moses perch are taking cut baits around The Gneerings with better quality caught at dawn and dusk. Murphy’s Reef is f ring along the north-eastern ledge with snapper, amberjack and sweetlip taking pillies and squid. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is returning bass and spangled perch with lures worked along the weed line or shrimps jigged near the drop offs. Lake Macdonald is also working well for bass and Mary River cod with medium divers trolled from the boat ramp to the point opposite the scout den. Somerset, as always, is f ring for bass and golden perch with good reports from Red Rock and right up near the power lines.
