I

love the water, particularly the ocean, and yes, I know, I’m not Robinson Crusoe there. During summer (and even in the cooler months) there is no greater pleasure for me than diving into the waves. It’s been a punishment then that I have spent the past few months in a moonboot, but hey, there is always next summer. Anyhoo, like many a water lover I have a healthy respect for the power of that blue stuff to the east (to be honest I won’t take the SUP out in anything over about three feet). So it’s remarkable to me when I read about men like Mark Visser. Actually, there aren’t many men like Mark Visser. MWP’s Jarna Baudinette was lucky enough to pin down the man whose life mission, to us outsiders, seems to be to put himself into harm’s way. It’s surprising to learn he’s actually a humble, disciplined man whose adventures are carefully planned and meticulously calculated. The impression you get is that Mark doesn’t view what he does as dangerous due to the level of planning and preparation involved, but we’ll have to take his word for it – I still think he is remarkable. See what you make of him over the page. From one dangerous activity to another – what are you doing with the kids these school holidays? If you’re new to the Coast, or even if you’ve been here a while, and you are unsure how to amuse your little treasures, head over to our school holiday fun guide starting on page 31. You can always drag them along to some open homes. Easter is a great time to go house hunting, and we have plenty of homes, advice and news in My Property Preview. hen Mark Visser told people he was planning to surf Jaws at night, most of them told him he was out of his mind. That was in 2010, when the Sunshine Coast surfer had already established himself as one of the world’s top big-wave riders. But the infamous surf break on Maui’s north shore is known for producing monster waves up to 70-feet high, and Visser was planning to surf the treacherous outer reef in darkness. The most common response? Don’t be crazy, mate – you’re going to die. “Around 30 per cent said it was achievable, and the other 70 per cent said it wouldn’t go my way,” Visser says. “But I tend to run my own show and keep things to myself, and so I only let those 30 per cent inf uence me. I tend to only listen to those people who know me and have my best interests at heart.” On January 20, 2011 Visser, now 31, achieved a night ride at Jaws in 30- to 40-foot swell, wearing a specially designed buoyancy vest f tted

with LED lights. He rode a lighted board and was accompanied by two Jet Skis and a helicopter, to record the moment but also to rescue him if things went terribly wrong. Fortunately they didn’t, and the successful ride was captured in a documentary called Night Rider, which helped cement Visser’s reputation as one of the world’s most daring adventure athletes. Night Rider also captured almost four years of painstaking preparation. After competing as a junior surfer and spending three years on the Association of Surf ng Professionals World Qualifying Series, Visser says he began to crave bigger challenges. “After three years I was realistic with myself and went, okay, in the majority of events I’m making three or four heats and then getting knocked out; I’m not in that top end as a dangerous competitor,” he says. “And I took note of the fact that every time it was in a bigger place [I performed better]. So it became pretty obvious to me – why not just focus all my energy on what I’m good at?” M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

IT’S JUST ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE FOR BIG WAVE SURFER MARK VISSER. PHOTO: AAP

“IF YOU’VE EVER BEEN HELD DOWN BY A WAVE WHILE SURFING, YOU’LL KNOW BEING ABLE TO HOLD YOUR BREATH IS A USEFUL SKILL”

He switched his focus to big-wave surf ng, and recognition and awards soon followed. “It also felt like I wasn’t going against the grain anymore,” he says. “Before it had felt like I was grinding to get where I was, whereas this came more naturally. The hard work didn’t feel like hard work – training was fun and I really loved it.” But during that time, Visser was also harbouring the desire to take on challenges that would push the boundaries of what was thought possible for a surfer. Surf ng Hawaii’s most dangerous break at night was one of them. “When I had an injury and couldn’t surf, I had time to really start planning these things – that was probably the turning point for me.”

PART OF THE PLAN

While his feat that night has made him a household name, many people are surprised to discover Visser isn’t reckless. He didn’t buy a plane ticket straight to Hawaii – instead he spent a year analysing the scenario to identify every potential risk, and then a couple more years ensuring he was prepared for it. The planning took a great deal of patience and discipline. “That’s exactly what the whole program is about – we really need to look the bull in the eye every time,” Visser says.

This means when a naysayer points out a potential problem or weakness, the team (which includes a personal trainer, freediving instructor, survival specialist and oceanographer, among others) is careful to address it fully, rather than just brushing it off. “So we’ve not only thought of everything, but … we actually plan for it to happen and to be ready for that,” he says. “I put a lot of effort into making it as achievable as possible.” “But it’s also about not being afraid to say no, that’s not achievable, even though I thought it was. You’re not held to anyone’s word.” The night ride proved achievable and Visser quickly turned his focus to bigger challenges, working his way through a series of feats that will eventually form a documentary called Nine Lives. “I remember thinking, this is just the start of what you’re capable of if you really want to do this,” he says. His second challenge, Operation Deep Blue, involved parachuting into the middle of the ocean in search of waves up to 100-foot high that had never been surfed before. Again, safety was paramount, and each of the four people on Visser’s team had to be physically and mentally up to the task. “The cameraman had to be able to hold his

breath for four minutes,” Visser says. “If one person wasn’t as f t as the other guys, he wasn’t allowed to go. We all had to know how to put a morphine drip into someone, how to cut their wetsuit off, where to start the CPR procedure. And when it was all perfected on land, then we had to do it out in the water, or on a Jet Ski. “We’re always conscious of it – is this safe, is that achievable? We’re constantly chipping away at it.” At least eight big-wave surfers have been killed over the past few decades, and like all surfers, Visser says he still fears the power of the ocean. But while he’s always been an adventurous person, he doesn’t see himself as a huge risk-taker. He’s far more calculated in his approach. The key to surviving a huge wipeout, he says, is to never panic. “But how do you not panic?” he says. “It’s by having conf dence, and the way you get conf dence is by having experience – by doing the hard work and the preparation, and then working your way up.” Visser says the thrill isn’t found only in that familiar adrenalin rush. It’s also in the call to adventure, the chance to experience parts of the ocean still unseen. continued over>

TRAINING DAYS

If you’ve ever been held down by a wave while surf ng, you’ll know being able to hold your breath is a useful skill. Make that wave the size of a small building and it becomes a life or death issue. Mark Visser can hold his breath for six minutes and four seconds. It’s an art he’s perfected over years of intense training. “Once you get to that level you start experimenting with different types of drills, to see what else you could do while holding your breath – could you move a certain distance, then hold and wait, and then move again?” These drills are more diff cult than what’s called a static hold – where you f oat face down with your head underwater – and mimic the conditions experienced during a wipeout. “It’s realistic that you have to swim [underwater],” he says. “And even when you’re getting smashed and not swimming you’re using energy.” He also practises being blindfolded underwater and having to escape from a maze or follow a groove in the bottom in the pool, which can be “extremely claustrophobic”. His gym regime is

“I really just want to explore the unknown, keep treading into unchartered territory.” “Maybe it’s [discovering] some amazing sea life. There might not even be waves, but if we’ve got the opportunity I just want to see what’s out there.”

VISSER PREPARES METICULOUSLY FOR EACH RIDE AND FOLLOWS A GYM REGIME DESIGNED FOR EXPLOSIVE POWER

designed around his need to be able to move fast and with incredible force. “I have to have a good base level of endurance, but the main thing is I need to have explosive power,” he says. “If you’re surf ng Jaws – especially if you’re paddling in – you’ve got to turn and explode to get into position, and then turn and explode to catch the wave.” To build that strength Visser does dips with 60 kilos of additional weight or chin-ups with weighted plates strapped to his body. “You’re pulling yourself and a lot more, so when you’re free weighted [in the water] you’ve got that power,” he says. Visser’s worst wipeout was in South Africa a few years ago. He’d been surf ng 70-foot sets and was taking a break while his tow-in partner did some f lming. There was a smaller wave in front with around a 50-foot face, and Visser decided to catch one for fun while he waited.

“The Jet Ski driver kind of got stuck, and I ended up taking off super deep and got absolutely obliterated,” he says. “It was the biggest beating I’ve ever had – I was held down for such a long time, and so deep that the water was almost black. “The whitewash was about f ve storeys high and it went straight over the top of me. I got the next wave straight in the face.” When he f nally popped up he couldn’t see anyone. “A few minutes later they came over and grabbed me, and said we had to go because there was a big shark out the back. Being Africa, it was a great white.”

Mark Visser will speak live on stage at the sold-out TEDxNoosa event today from 1.30pm. You can watch live at tedxnoosa.com.

ICONIC SURF CONTEST TURNS 40

Pa and Ma Bendall were the patriarch and matriarch of surf ng on the Sunshine Coast, founding the Moffateers surf ng club in 1966 to encourage local youth to take up surf ng.

T

his year marks the 40th anniversary of the Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Surf ng Contest to remember the local surf ng legends that put Moffat Beach on the map. Former Canadian pilot Charles Ben Bendall and his wife Marjory rolled into Caloundra in their old bus in the 1950s after travelling on a surf ng tour of Australia. They immediately fell in love with the area and stayed. Soon the pair would become as iconic to the Sunshine Coast as the ocean views overlooking Moffat Beach, becoming known as the matriarch and patriarch of surf ng on the Sunshine Coast for

their contribution to the sport in the region. With only a handful of other surfers living locally at the time, Pa started the ‘Moffateers’ invitational club in 1966, with a view to supporting integrity in the sport, and encouraged the youth in the area to take up surf ng by offering them free membership. He used the club’s contests as training for the young surfers and mentored them to compete in regional, state and national championships. Apart from creating the Moffateers, both he and Ma were also known for encouraging women’s surf ng and their genuine caring contribution to the town. Pa passed away in 1973, and his ashes were scattered by plane in the waters around his beloved Moffat Beach, and a memorial plaque was unveiled at Pa Bendall Park, on the Moffat headland. The following year, in 1974, the Memorial Surf ng Contest was launched in his memory. Ma lived on until 2001, reaching the age of 93. This year the contest will be held at Moffat Beach over the Easter weekend, with f rst heats kicking off at 6.30am on Friday, April 18 and continuing on through the weekend, culminating in the awards presentation on Sunday, April 20. Divisions for contestants start from under 16s and up to the over 50s. Over its 40 years, the contest has attracted talented surfers from across the

nation, with some starting in their youth and going on to enjoy professional success. Past winners include world champion Joel Parkinson, Wade Goodall and Eli Steel. Hosts of the event, the WindanSea Surf Club, will be erecting scaffold seating for spectators, and will have some of Ma and Pa’s boards and memorabilia on display. The ashes of ’70s surf ng legend Michael Peterson will be scattered into the ocean by his mother Joan, during the weekend. There will be stalls, markets and food available throughout the weekend, and live music by Ziggy Alberts on the Friday, with iconic surf ng band The Celibate Rif es playing at the Kings Beach Tavern on Saturday. WindanSea Surf Club brings a tide of champs The original WindanSea Surf Club was founded in the 1960s in San Diego, California. Its expansion invariably found a home in Australia’s thriving surf scene of the ’60s and ’70s, with three clubs being formed in Sydney, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. According to current president Terry Landsberg, WindanSea Caloundra was formed by two local surfers, Bruce McKean and Greg Minert in 1970. The club followed in the famous footsteps of the Moffateers, founded by the Ma and Pa Bendall. Surfers such as Gerry Lopez, Terry Fitzgerald, Richard Harvey, Michael Peterson, Peter Drouyn and Nat Young have all competed in the Pa and Ma Bendall contest, which the club hosts. Professional surfers such as Joel Parkinson, Serena Brooke and Wade Goodall are past and present members of WindanSea Boardriders and have surfed in this contest. Today the club has more than 100 members of all ages.

UNI WINS $300K FOR AID PROJECT

Sunny Coast gears up for an action-packed Easter

T

he University of the Sunshine Coast’s International Projects Group has received almost $300,000 in funding from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, to teach a group of East Lombok representatives how to sustainably manage their coastline and islands. Twelve Indonesian delegates from government, academia, industry and community have arrived at the University of the Sunshine Coast after receiving Australia Awards Fellowships to take part in the aid program. The USC International Projects Group welcomed the Indonesian representatives to the Sippy Downs campus recently, where they will attend lectures and workshops to assist them with generating tourism and economic development in East Lombok, while conserving its environment. Dr Gayle Mayes, a lecturer in Tourism, Leisure and Events Management, says the month-long program would showcase the USC’s expertise in diverse f elds, and will be an opportunity to boost collaboration between the countries. The program is supported by Lombok’s

Australia Award Fellows Imam Bachtiar (left) of the University of Mataram, and Gufranuddin (right) of the District Tourism Office with USC’s Gayle Mayes University of Mataram, the Nusa Tenggara Barat provincial government, the Regency of East Lombok, Garuda Airlines and the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. Australia Award Fellowship recipient Gufranuddin, who is head of East Lombok’s Tourism Off ce, says the East Lombok coastline is home to more than a million people. Among these are many farmers and f shermen, who live below the poverty line. Gufranuddin says he welcomes the opportunity to improve their standard of living through learning vital information about conservation and economic improvement.

MONEY MINUTE with Julie Schafer

For many people, Easter is all about the chocolate. For others, it’s all about getting out and about with the family. The Sunshine Coast will host a variety of family events over the Easter weekend, encompassing all areas from the coast to the hinterland. The Kenilworth Cheese, Wine and Food Festival offers a great excuse to head for the hills on Easter Saturday. It kicks off with a cheese rolling competition, and features gourmet cooking demonstrations from bush foods chef, Peter Wolfe, with plenty of opportunities to taste the delicious cheeses and wine from across the region. It will be a day the whole family will enjoy, with horse drawn wagon rides and a ‘Cheester Egg Hunt’ for the littlies. On Easter Sunday Maroochydore will be transformed for the Ocean Street World Festival, with the opportunity to experience different cultural traditions and taste delicious international cuisines. The day includes performances from the Kabi Kabi dancers, Greek folk singers, a Latino rock band and North African drummers. Other events happening over the Easter break include the Pa and Ma Bendall Surf Classic in Caloundra (see page 16), and the 2014 Australian Dragon Boat Championships at Lake Kawana.

Noosa to host major tourism forum The Sunshine Coast will host the third annual Destination Q Forum, bringing together tourism industry players from across Queensland, on September 16 and 17. The two-day event will be held in Noosa at Sheraton Noosa Resort and Spa and the Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resort and Spa. Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd CEO, Simon Ambrose, welcomes the economic boost that the event will bring to the Sunshine Coast. “This forum will not only bring together government, industry

leaders and operators to focus on the state’s tourism sector, but will also provide an opportunity to put the spotlight on the entire Sunshine Coast region, from Caloundra through to Gympie.” According to the Queensland Tourism Industry Council, tourism in Queensland contributes $22 billion to the State’s economy and employs around 136,000 Queenslanders. Registrations for the 2014 Destination Q Forum open in May. For more information go to destq.com.au.

New website tackles cyber bullying The launch of a new cyber-safety website for Queensland school students aims to create awareness and open up communication about cyber bullying. Queensland Minister for Education, Training and Employment, John-Paul Langbroek recognises that the internet can be a valuable resource, but also has its dangers. He says the website will include a Meet the Creeps quiz, introducing the characters Bully Girl and Shifty Shane, to educate the students on the dangers of cyber bullying. The site is a collaboration between the Queensland Government and Telstra.

7 Biggest Mistakes you could be making that could cause Permanent Depression, Anxiety or ADHD Are you not as happy as you used to be? Is stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, or ADHD overwhelming you? Are anti-depressants not working for you? Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow? We had an incredible response from all who were logged on for the webinar we ran about one of my favourite topics – Solving the puzzle that creates Anxiety Depression & ADHD. When you put it all together, it all makes sense. There are 7 key underlying triggers which can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them.

The 7 key common triggers that affect your brain, cause a compounding effect that your brain cannot deal with, which leads to long term, and then permanent brainwave pattern changes, affecting your personality, mood, and ability to think and cope, permanently! Fortunately it can be quite easy to address. Patients who have suffered depression for four decades, have reported to have improved out of sight after one month and other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment, including sufferers of Major Depressive Disorder, and children with ADHD, who have then been able to reduce their medication in less than 7 weeks, and these results are permanent and medication free! Proven with testing, these steps improve brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication, in adults and children. To f nd out more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or view the webinar on our website. A webinar is simply a seminar that you can see on the internet. You just register through the website and it will play for you on your computer. It’s easy and it’s free. Register now for 7 Steps to Freedom from Anxiety, Depression & ADHD at www. advancedwellness.com.au.

Bits and Bytes >> Chromecast st dongle

A top Google executive says the company’s Chromecast e ecast dongle is coming to “many more countries” in the next few weeks, w but it is not clear whether Australia is among them. Sundar Pichai, the search giant’s head of Android, apps and Chrome, made the comment during a keynote speech at the South By Southwest Interactive Festival in America last month. The gizmo, which plugs into a TV HDMI port and streams video and media content from mobile devices, is currently only available in America, where it costs $US35 (about $38) $38). Pichai did not reveal how many Chromecasts Google has sold, but said the number was “in the millions”. The gadget has proven popular among so-called cable-cutters who are switching off traditional subscription pay TV packages in favour of internetbased services such as Netf ix. Unconf rmed reports have claimed Google will bring the Chromecast to Australia in collaboration with Telstra. AAP

HACKERS WITH HEART UNITE Hackers from across Europe f ocked to Geneva last month, not to play havoc with Swiss computers but to test their ethical hacking skills. The sixth annual Insomni’hack ethical hacking competition, organised by IT security f rm SCRT, drew more than 300 hackers who battled for hours to solve a range of f endish computer security challenges. Attendees faced “about 30 tests in almost all security areas”, SCRT founder Paul Such says. “People have to try to connect to a website without the user’s name and password; enter a f le without the decoding key; intercept communications and read the content of these communications.” This year there were participants from Ukraine, Spain, Germany, France and other countries. Three of the best hacking teams in the world were present, including the winners of another famed competition, ‘Dragon Sector’, who are mostly from Poland. While the Geneva competition is held for fun, many of the competitors

make a living from their hobby. “Our core business activity is ethical hacking, which means testing companies’ security lapses and using the same tricks that ill-intentioned hackers would use, with the difference that we work under contract,” Such says. There is serious money to be earned from uncovering security gaps for major internet f rms, says Nicolas Gregoire, who has previously spotted vulnerabilities in the software of both Yahoo! and Oracle. “If you are a company that markets software, opens a website and a hacker shows you a hole he found in your product, you will pay him,” Such adds. Obama vows to cut emissions

AAP

A

group of farmers has brought to life the Transformers f lms, toys and TV series by building giant robots out of old car parts in rural China. The original toys, which were a huge hit with children in the 1980s, could be turned from cars into robots and back again. Their popularity spawned a hit television show, and more recently, the movie franchise. In Shandong province, they have inspired a range of towering creations, including some in the red and blue colours of Optimus Prime, the leader of the benevolent Autobots. Others are in bright yellow – like the famous Bumblebee character adored by young fans. Some of the robots are crafted from the grey metal of the evil Decepticons. “It’s a personal hobby; I watched the movie and learnt the models online, so I wanted to make it on my own,” says Wang Shizun, one of the farmers. “We’ve installed lights in their eyes, and some of their arms and legs can move.” Wang and his partner oversee a staff of 11 farmers, reports say, and OFweek, a website covering China’s tech industry, says the models fetch from 10,000 to 100,000 yuan

(about $1740 to $17,400) apiece. The tallest of creations are 12 metres high, but f ight and the ability to convert themselves back into cars remain elusive. “We’re thinking about making them transform,” Wang says, “but it’s hard to make them transform into cars at this stage.” The group has also made other models that seem to take inspiration from various movies and characters, including Alien, Predator, and Star Wars’ C-3PO. Some of the makers have exercised more creative licence, adding their own designs or traditional Chinese elements such as a mask. AAP

The White House has pledged to clamp down on US emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas produced by cattle and natural gas production that contributes to climate change. The bid is the latest by President Barack Obama’s administration to f nd ways to tackle climate change in the face of staunch opposition by rival Republican lawmakers. The United States is the largest greenhouse gas emitter after China. Methane makes up some nine per cent of US emissions but the environmental effect is some 20 times as potent as that of the most common greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. Cow manure is a leading source of methane. The White House said that the dairy industry and federal departments would unveil in June voluntary plans to reduce the sector’s emissions by 25 per cent by 2020. Many environmentalists say that the commitment by the United States and other countries is nowhere close to the reduction levels needed to avert worst-case scenarios of climate change. Obama has pledged action on climate change but increasingly focused on actions he can take without Congress. A proposal for broader restrictions on greenhouse emissions died in the Senate in 2010 amid opposition by lawmakers close to industry. AAP

UK: marriage equality

ALL COME WITH 5-STAR ANCAP SAFETY RATING

You’re not alone. About 20% of the population suffer with headaches and migraine. Days off work and poor productivity not only affect our work, but also our home life. Professor Wayne Wittingham, Chiropractor, conducted several major studies on headaches. These studies showed that for the majority of headache sufferers, chiropractic helped reduce the pain, intensity and frequency of the headaches. One of the best things to come from the study was evidence that chiropractic prevented headaches in some people. If you or a family member is suffering, this may be the answer.

FLD / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

British Prime Minister David Cameron has hailed the f rst same-sex marriages in England and Wales as sending a “powerful message” about equality. The law changed on Saturday after midnight, with a number of gay couples vying to claim the title of being the f rst to be married in Britain by trying to time it perfectly so their vows were said just seconds after the clock struck 12. Cameron says the reform is necessary because “when people’s love is divided by law, it is that law that needs to change”. Writing in the gay news service, Pink News, he says, “this weekend is an important moment for our country” because “we will at last have equal marriage in our country”. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act came into force in July last year but it was not until March 13 this year when couples were able to register their intention to marry under the Act. While whoever says the words “I do” f rst can claim the title of f rst gay couple to be wed in

Suffering with headaches or migraines?

Find out if I can help you David Cameron the UK, other couples who previously married abroad have already had their unions recognised. On March 13, the law in England and Wales changed to recognise same-sex marriages performed overseas. Rainbow f ags were hung all over the country to celebrate the occasion, with one f ying at the heart of Westminster. Scotland has also legislated to allow same-sex marriages, with the f rst ceremonies expected to take place later this year. AAP

he Sunshine Coast will host the Startup Weekend on May 2 to 4, bringing together entrepreneurs, designers, developers and start-up enthusiasts for a weekend of participation and innovation. The event will feature intensive networking among the participants to take innovative business ideas from concept to launch. According to the Startup Weekend headquarters in California, around one in three businesses created by the teams at the Startup Weekend have life beyond the event. The University of the Sunshine Coast’s School of Business and the Innovation Centre have organised the event after seeing its success in other regions. Professor Mike Clements, Head of USC’s School of Business, says ventures like the Startup Weekend provide fantastic mentoring opportunities for students who are keen to make the

most of their study experience. Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast CEO Mark Paddenberg believes the future of the region depends on our ability to support the next generation of entrepreneurs, and sees this event as an important opportunity to do so. “Startup Weekends put people with great business ideas together with teams of people who can bring them to life,” he says. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the council is proud to sponsor the Startup Weekend event, which he says is a concept that “exemplif es the essence of new thinking around the Coast economy”. Startup Weekend has held more than 325 events around the globe and inspired nearly 30,000 entrepreneurs to take an idea from concept to launch. The Sunshine Coast Startup Weekend will be held at the USC campus from 5:30pm Friday May 2 to 9pm Sunday May 4. For more information visit startupweekend.org.

SPIN-OFF STOCKS A SMART INVESTMENT

Anthony Ward is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

The Australian Stock Exchange has witnessed a number of new companies listing. This has come about by initial public offerings and with companies demerging some of their businesses (spin-offs). One such spin-off was the recent splitting of the Amcor (AMC) businesses. Existing investors in Amcor received the same number of shares in a new company, Orora. The spin-off occurred as Amcor believed it was best for both businesses to pursue their own growth agendas and strategic priorities. Orora is focused on f bre and beverage packaging in Australia and packaging distribution in the US. The

MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

25.indd 1

business has 36 manufacturing plants and 79 distribution sites across seven countries, and consists of two business groups – Australasia and packaging distribution. The Australasia business group focuses on f bre (recycled paper, corrugated boxes, cartons and sacks and distribution of packaging materials) and beverage (glass bottles, beverage cans and wine closures) packaging in Australia and New Zealand. The business has 26 manufacturing plants and 24 distribution sites. The packaging distribution business group is predominantly located in the US. It has two operating divisions – distribution and manufacturing. It also has integrated corrugated sheet and box manufacturing and equipment sales capabilities. It has 10 manufacturing plants and 55 distribution sites. We believe Orora will outperform its peers for a number of reasons. Firstly, the company has a transparent earnings growth outlook for the

medium term that will be driven by cost saving programs. Secondly, there is the potential for value creation from a reallocation of surplus capital. Thirdly, it has strong dividend and free cash-f ow yields. Fourthly, it has a positive exposure to a falling Australian dollar. Fifthly, there is strong interest from small-cap fund managers. And lastly, there is the potential for corporate activity. In summary, spun-off stocks have traditionally proven to be a happy hunting ground for investors, and we see Orora being no different. The shares have a forecast dividend yield of 5.4 per cent, fully franked, for 2015, and this should certainly attract the interest of yield-hungry investors. Add in the reasons mentioned above and there is also potential for solid capital growth. Anthony Ward is an Authorised Representative (no 427051) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. Take a chill pill Letting off steam may not be as helpful as we’d like to believe, writes Leah McLennan.

T

here’s nothing like a laundry event to rile me up. Returning from work several days ago on a cloudless, hot afternoon to f nd my partner has the dryer in full swing resulted in a verbal head-to-head. I paced, threw the odd item of clothing and acted like Gordon Ramsay on a bad day. The experience got me wondering. Do such outbursts harm my relationship? Yes, say the authors of a recently released book, The Anger Fallacy. Clinical psychologists Steven Laurent and Ross Menzies’ book challenges what most of us believe – that anger can be useful when used

‘constructively’. The authors argue anger is destructive and toxic, even when it seems justif ed. “Anger is a problem because it sabotages relationships,” Laurent says. “More than anxiety and sadness combined. At its core, anger is a hard-wired intimidation strategy, a bullying, f ghting emotion.” Surveys show 85 per cent of day-to-day anger occurs at home, with family and loved ones. “In this context, anger isn’t that effective,” says Laurent. And even when it is, it comes at a cost of warmth and intimacy. “Just about every bit of research out there suggests that having warm, non-angry, relationships is key to human happiness and emotional wellbeing.” Laurent says anger interferes with problemsolving and judgement, and makes us rash and rigid in our thinking. If we do become enraged he advises to “feel the anger and don’t do it anyway”. He recommends we go to bed angry, sit on the angry email for a day or two before sending it, walk away from a f ght; and seek advice from a third party before taking any hostile action. “If you still wish to carry out these actions when

Fu n Au t u m n F Fa s h i o n

you’re calm and collected, then go ahead,” he says. “But chances are, you won’t want to.” In the book, the authors claim angry people, far from lacking in self-worth as some have claimed, are often egocentric, self-righteous and lack empathy. Most people believe it’s other people’s behaviour that makes them angry. “It’s certainly other people’s behaviour that they’re angry about. But what’s really causing their anger is their expectations in the scene – or ‘shoulds’,” says Laurent. Anger always involves framing behaviour as “wrong”, not-as-it-should-be, explains Laurent. “Anger is driven by internal rules of how others ought to behave; and this makes it a self-righteous emotion, almost by def nition.” If you can see some of your rules for what they are – just the way you were brought up or your way of doing things – then it will naturally seem silly to judge others for not following them, he says. “If you walk around convinced your opinions on how people must behave are right and universal, you’ll live a restricted life, as well as an angry one,” he says. NISSAN GT-R’S POWER IS EARTH-SHATTERING WORDS Peter Atkinson

T

his is a road test two decades in the making. Since 1991, in fact, when I f rst laid eyes on this car being driven by a young racing driver called Mark Skaife and decorated veteran Jim Richards, who steered it to victory in the fabled Bathurst 1000. Back then, the Nissan Skyline GT-R earned the nickname ‘Godzilla’ because it made Australia’s best V8 race cars of the time look like pedal cars. The crowd booed that day – and ‘Gentleman Jim’ famously called them a “pack of arseholes”. A lot has changed since then, but the Godzilla name still f ts. The Nissan GT-R (they’ve dropped the Skyline reference) has evolved into one of the most celebrated performance machines in the world. A technological tour-de-

force that has rewritten many of the conventional rules about supercars, most particularly about who should make them. Before the GT-R, the world’s most exotic and powerful machines came almost exclusively from Europe. Even now, when we think of supercars, we think of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches and Mercedes-Benz AMGs. Yet this Japanese juggernaut has muscled its way into a place at the supercar table, insolently carving its name on the honour board at Germany’s fabled Nürburgring, where it holds the benchmark lap time on the treacherous Nordschleife circuit ahead of the best Europe has to offer. With that in mind, it was with some anticipation that we collected the keys

to the latest version of the GT-R to arrive in Australia – known as the Black Edition. It didn’t take long to see what the fuss was about. Just 2.7 seconds, in fact. That’s how long the GT-R takes to reach the Aussie speed limit. Yep. Two. Point. Seven. From zero to 100 in roughly the time it takes to say zero to 100. To stay close to the GT-R it you’d need a Porsche 911 Turbo S – costing more than $400-grand. To beat it, try a Bugatti Veyron ($1.3 million, 1000-horsepower, 16-cylinder quad-turbo engine). The Nissan, by comparison, has just six cylinders and costs less than $200,000. Drive away. Not that everybody will be rushing out to buy one. It’s not exactly continued over>

comfortable, nor particularly practical. So what’s the GT-R’s appeal? Well, it certainly draws more than its share of attention, for a start. Low and sleek, this car is king of the Grand Theft Auto video game fraternity. As blindingly fast as it is, it’s not as untamed as you might expect. It has an automatic gearbox, can be driven in city traff c without fuss and, on the highway, it even delivers decent fuel economy. Not roomy, mind you, and not exactly soft-riding. Truth is, there’s nothing ref ned about the GT-R. The twin-turbo engine ignites with a whir, then a cough and a gravelly, rasping rumble. At slow speeds, the transmission and the all-wheel-drive traction system grind and growl noticeably beneath the f oor. At anything above an idle, the quad exhausts – which are the size and shape of trumpets – let out a bark that can be heard in the next suburb. It’s fun to drive through tunnels. The GT-R is utterly intimidating. Put your foot down and it doesn’t so much accelerate as explode. Nothing can prepare you for the way this machine f res itself at the horizon. So

blunted by the ability of the tyres to remain in contact with the road. The GT-R, by contrast, puts every available kilowatt to the ground – a feat of engineering only the Japanese could truly achieve. So ingenious is the 4WD system, and rear-mounted transmission, Nissan has patented it. Yet while Nissan’s band of evil engineers have concocted all the sound and fury of this machine, the Japanese looked beyond their borders for many of the components. Those leather-clad, wrap-around seats are Recaros, made by a company founded in Germany.

quickly does it gather pace, so violently does it throw you back in your seat, it’s hard to take it all in at f rst. I’ve driven my share of quick cars but the GT-R is almost otherworldly. Let’s examine why. For sheer power, its 405 kilowatts (and 637Nm) are impressive but not earth-shattering. Rather, it’s the way the Nissan puts all this power to the ground, through its all-wheel grip, high-tech centre differential and electronic traction control systems. In many uber-powerful machines, the engine’s output is somewhat

The brakes are provided by Brembo, from Italy. The sublime 15-speaker audio system comes from American company Bose. The banzai personality, though, is absolutely home-grown. It’s not just a straight-line rocket, of course. That all-wheel-drive grip, combined with electronically controlled shock absorbers and the latest sticky Dunlop low-prof le tyres, mean it corners with awesome, unrelenting grip. And a car this fast, naturally, has to have equally stunning stopping power. Those Brembos oblige. Enhancements in this version of the GT-R include multi-LED headlights with adaptive front lighting system, increased use of lightweight steels and carbon f bre body panels and 20-inch six-spoke alloy wheels (part of the Black Edition package). It’s a car that is constantly evolving – something of an obsessive quest for the engineers. Mark Skaife has, in the years since, enjoyed a hall-of-fame career and shuff ed off into retirement. Jim Richards still seems able to drive as quickly as ever, despite being well into his twilight years. And Godzilla is bigger, badder and scarier than ever.

Stewart bought the two-door Lamborghini Miura P400S brand new in 1971, when it did 0-60 miles per hour (96.5 kilometres per hour) in 6.7 seconds, with a top speed of 275 kilometres per hour – the fastest road car of its kind in the world back then. The pristine four-litre blue sports car with silver trim has recently undergone a £100,000 restoration and is being sold on AutoTrader for £899,999. It is one of only 338 produced between December 1968 and March 1971. One was owned by Frank Sinatra and Miles Davis also had one, which he crashed in October 1972 after reportedly taking cocaine, breaking both ankles. The Miura garnered worldwide appeal when it featured in the opening sequence of Michael Caine

SPAIN HOSTS FERRARI FUN PARK Ferrari has chosen Spain as the home for the f rst European theme park devoted to the Prancing Horse brand. The fun park is to be built inside the Port Aventura resort near Barcelona at a cost of $US139 million ($151.14 million). It is scheduled to open in 2016. The plan follows the success of Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, which includes the Formula Rossa, billed as the world’s fastest roller coaster. The Spanish park will occupy about 75,000 square metres, with numerous Ferrari-related attractions, a 250-room hotel and a driving simulator. It is designed to cater for million visitors a year, half of them from outside Spain.

BMW ROLLS OUT NEW CARBON-FIBRE WHEELS classic, The Italian Job in 1969. Stewart owned his for f ve years until 1976, when it was sold to a private buyer. An AutoTrader spokesman said: “An old classic like this is rarely seen on the market now and particularly in such good condition for its age; all the love and attention has clearly kept it performing. This is a great investment if you do have 900k in your account.” AAP

BMW is planning to roll out new-generation carbon-f bre wheels which are stronger and safer than conventional alloys. The wheels are between 25 and 30 per cent lighter than aluminium wheels. Thanks to reduced rolling mass, they can help to reduce fuel consumption, the car maker announced in the southern French town of Miramas. Developers say concerns the black carbon-f bre wheels might not be suff ciently robust are unfounded. BMW says the wheels are more resistant to minor everyday kerb damage and blemishes can be easily polished out. BMW is already using carbon f bre on an industrial scale in its new i3 all-electric runabout and i8 hybrid sports car. The carmaker has invested heavily in the German SGL carbon-f bre company, in which it has a substantial stake. AAP

C OV E R S T O RY

If you are planning on building your own home then you are embarking on an exciting journey, but there are some important things to take into account to ensure it does not turn into a nightmare and ruin the experience for you.

KNOW YOUR STUFF

Make sure all of your paperwork is in order and you have all the relevant council approvals for all of the building. Be sure about the agreed price that the builder is doing the work for, and that you have worked out all the different inclusions so you know the exact f gure you are agreeing to before signing off on the work. Some of those little extras that are added on later might end up adding up to thousands of dollars, so make sure you know exactly how much you are spending.

RESEARCH

If you are not a builder yourself, you will need someone else to do the job for you. Choosing the right person is probably going to be one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. Putting in the research now will help to avoid potential issues later, so make sure you choose carefully. Once you think you have your man (or woman), make sure you spend a lot of time getting to know that person so you can be sure the trust is there. Communication is key both at the beginning and during the building process.

[ 40 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ AP RIL 4, 2014

40.indd 1

PLAN

The planning stage is almost as important as the building stage and you will want to make sure you are completely happy with all the details of the house before you sign off on the plans. Make sure every detail is worked out exactly as you would like it to be, otherwise you may live to regret it down the track. Once the planning is complete, set a date and make sure your builder commits to it. An honest builder will be happy to set a date.

GET IT IN WRITING

A great rule of thumb no matter what business you are in is to always get everything in writing. Ensure that both you and builder, and anyone else you do business with, agrees to everything in writing, before the work is carried out. This could potentially save you a lot of money down the road and could even prevent legal action. It is always better to be safe than sorry!

GET A LAWYER

Murphy’s Law says if you don’t seek legal advice you will need it, and if you do seek it you won’t. Solicitor’s fees add up and can seem unnecessary – especially when you need the cash for other things – but they are never a waste. Make sure you seek solid legal advice so you know where you stand with all aspects of the building process. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

OUTSTANDING RESULTS Overwhelming response – again What an overwhelming response from our marketing program in My Weekly Preview for 11 Currimundi Road, Currimundi – we had more than 60 groups enquire resulting in multiple offers and the great news for the sellers was that we had it SOLD within a week. We have a VERY happy seller. Thanks again MWP! Jodie Hedley-Ward Next Property Group

It’s all about numbers

Better than the net

Very happy seller

To achieve a premium result when selling, you need to attract all the prospective buyers to create competition. A recent four-week campaign in both print and on the internet produced 29 group inspections. MWP produced 21 of those potential buyers, three written offers and the successful purchaser. The result was a record sale in the street and the sellers were very happy. MWP outperforms time and again.

We experienced a massive increase in inspections from our MWP campaign. At 7 Parkview Terrace, Buderim we ran a fourweek campaign in MWP. The f rst weekend was internet only and we had just four inspections; the second weekend we had a half-page ad in MWP and had 21 inspections over two days. With advertisements for three consecutive weeks, we then saw a total of 52 inspections. The seller has been extremely pleased with the results of the marketing campaign.

8 Glen Road, Buderim – 58 inspections and sold straight after auction. Very happy seller. MWP simply works!

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Relationship dramas are likely as the lunar eclipse, Uranus and Pluto stir up partnership problems. You’re feeling feisty, but resist the temptation to start arguments. Be extra careful what you say on Wednesday, choose your words wisely.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Bulls - have you got any bad habits you’ve been trying to kick? The lunar eclipse shines a spotlight on lifestyle choices that may be compromising your health and vitality. You’re in a friendly and talkative mood on Good Friday, as you mix and mingle; socialize and circulate.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] This week you’ll be easily distracted, as your mercurial mind jumps all over the place. The lunar eclipse fires up your entertainment zone so it’s time to be a gregarious Gemini as you shop, see a movie, go to a concert, hit the clubs or party with friends.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Tuesday’s eclipse highlights your home zone so be on drama alert as emotions will be running high, and you’re likely to blow things way out of proportion. The stars favour eating, drinking, socialising, travelling and hanging out with loved ones.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Lions aren’t usually domesticated creatures (you prefer to pour your energy into shining on the public stage). But, with the moon and Saturn hooking up your home zone, it’s time to tackle DIY jobs that you’ve been putting on the backburner.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] This week will work best if you multi-task and mix things up. Avoid making major financial decisions. Nervous energy and stress levels are high so pace yourself. Group activities and social networking are favoured but don’t assume you know what a loved one is thinking.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] The lunar eclipse is likely to trigger some relationship rumbles. Financial negotiations are favoured on Friday – as long as you have done your homework and have your business hat on. Over the weekend you’re in the mood to indulge your sweet tooth.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Friday’s stars are fabulous for Scorpio flights of fancy as you explore and experiment, go on a grand adventure or fall passionately in love! If you are too set in your ways then you’re in for an unsettling Saturday and Sunday, as Uranus and Jupiter disrupt your routine.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] The lunar eclipse stimulates your ‘kids zone’ so expect a tricky time, as children and teenagers shift into hyperactive mode. You have a talent for putting your foot firmly in your mouth but are people ready for your special brand of Sagittarian truth?

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Conscientious Capricorn – when trying to juggle projects and personal matters, compromise is the key. If you try to do everything perfectly, you’ll end up exhausted. Prepare for upheaval on the weekend, as unpredictable Uranus shakes things up on the home front.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] You’ll feel restless over the break, as the Uranus and Pluto stirs up your temperamental side. Just remember the difference between reckless behaviour (resulting in regrets) and spontaneous action (leading to success). Keep busy with interesting projects.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] The focus is on lust and loot as the lunar eclipse brings up unresolved issues. An intimate relationship could soar (or crash) depending on how committed you are, emotionally and financially. With Venus and Neptune in your sign, you’re emanating serious charisma.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

Well, at least we’ve had some waves of late. As for the coming weekend there should be some small waves around with slight onshore winds, so they say! I would advise getting up early. Maybe a kids’ weekend as conditions should be ideal. I have heard from the weather man that this winter the waves should be the best in years. Actually, I made that up, but never underestimate the power of positive thinking! How good was last winter? The Pa Bendall will be on at Easter so make sure you pop down. It’s the oldest surf event in Australia! Tune in to the next phase of the ASP tour at Margaret River. Hopefully they score some swell to showcase that wave.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Quality whiting are working along the yabby banks around Goat and Channel islands in the Maroochy River. Cod, trevally and jacks will be taking live baits around the Motorway Bridge pylons. Flathead are picking up trolled lures from the banks near Muller Park, Bli Bli. There are heaps of mud crabs, but a high percentage are female, undersize and illegal. SURF: Pincushion is returning bream on mullet f llet on the rising night tide and still a few tailor right on sunrise using slugs and pillies. Catch dart and whiting along both Maroochy and Mudjimba beaches with pippies the best bait. OFFSHORE: A great week with action aplenty from Old Woman Island to Point Cartwright and out around Murphy’s Reef where spaniards and yellow-f n are snapping up trolled baits, lures, and well-presented f ies. Mixed reef f sh are taking squid and pillies from Murphy’s to Wide Caloundra. FRESHWATER: Golden perch and bass are keeping most anglers happy in local dams, rivers and creeks. There have been many reports of alleged breaches of bag limits. If you care what happens to our f sheries please call Fisheries Qld if you witness any illegal activities.
