’m really lucky to live close to my local beach, and you’ll often f nd me or a member of my little tribe down there, walking the dogs, swimming or simply soaking up the atmosphere. It’s a great spot to hang out, even in winter, so sometimes I have to remind myself that the Sunshine Coast offers so much more than our many and varied strips of sand and the water that crashes onto them. I enjoyed researching this week’s cover story, where I went exploring – from the comfort of my off ce chair – other parts of the region. This week My Weekly Preview is reminding readers about the other sides of our Coast and discovering the many and varied things you can do in our region at any time of year, but particularly for the next few months, when the mercury drops and we pop away our towels and togs until October. I have slipped in a few water-based activities in our cover story, but I am pleased to say that there is so much more to do in our region that I probably have only skimmed the surface. So if you’re sitting at home in your ugg boots and cardi this weekend, bemoaning the end of summer, slip on some walking shoes, grab a backpack and turn the page. I know what I’ll be doing tomorrow. The end of summer also means it’s nearly time to say, “thank you mum for putting up with me for the past 12 months” (are you reading this, younger Pearson?). And nothing says “I love you” like breakfast in bed, a big bunch of f owers and a large gift-wrapped present. CHANGE SUMMER'S OVER BUT THE GOOD TIMES ROLL ON.

e all enjoy summer on the Sunshine Coast, but the region offers more than just sun and surf. Many locals love the cooler months – where the sunburn factor has lessened, the crowds are thinning out and it doesn't feel like you're missing out on the action if you don't get to the beach. We are fortunate our winters are mild and generally dry, offering a climate conducive for activities that don't revolve around our famous surf and sand. Sure, you can still hit the beach during winter – local surfers and die-hard beachgoers don't let a little chill in the water put them off – but the cooler months provide the perfect opportunity to do something different. On cool or rainy days, take in a bit of culture, enjoy the hinterland, visit a luxurious day spa or treat yourself to a guided wine tour. However you choose to spend your free time this winter, there's no excuse to stay cooped up at home. Here are a few ideas to get you out and about and enjoying the Sunshine Coast in ways you may not have thought about before.

GO WEST

For those of us who like to stick within a few hundred metres of the surf, these next few months are a great time to get off the beach. And while you can explore our natural wonders at any time of year, it’s so much nicer when the sun isn’t beating down on you. So, nature calls. Are you going to answer?

Here are a few of MWP’s highlights: • Walking in Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. This pocket of remnant rainforest on top of the hill is a gorgeous spot where you can listen to a symphony of birdsong and possibly spot a pademelon or two. You can even get married there. • Discovering Buderim Forest. This is a picturesque park that’s perfect for a stroll or to introduce the kids to bushwalking. • Exploring Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens. Tucked away in Tanawha, the gardens are in 82 hectares of forest with creeks, walking tracks, the odd artwork and picnic areas. Another good spot for a wedding. • Heading to Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary. Go to Bli Bli to experience a diverse range of f ora and fauna. Insect repellent year-round is a good idea.

• Hitting Caloundra Coastal Walk. Okay, it’s the coast and you’ve probably walked parts of it heaps of times before, but in winter there are fewer tourists on the 25-kilometre stretch from Golden Beach up to Point Cartwright. Hire a bike and see how you go. • Diving the Ex-HMAS Brisbane. The former missile destroyer now lies at the bottom of the ocean off Old Woman Island, and is a great introduction to diving. Winter is a really good time to get your dive ticket as the visibility is better when the weather cools off. • Climbing a mountain. Glass House Mountains National Park has a range of walking tracks, from the very easy for families and those with mobility problems, to the very challenging. It also offers plenty of abseiling and rock climbing sites – go with an experienced friend if you’re not familiar with the area. • Swimming in Kondalilla National Park. Sunshine Coast locals love a good market, and Eumundi isn’t the only place where you can pick up unique arts and crafts while doing your weekly fruit and veg shop. Markets are also great places to people watch and are much more pleasant in winter, when the sun isn’t beating down on you, making you wish you were at the beach. For more on markets in our region, head to news on page 16. We also like our live music and other festivals here on the Coast. Events on in the cooler months include Noosa International Food and Wine Festival, which is on from May 15 to 18. Maleny’s Real Food Festival is on September 13 and 14 – put that one in your diary. For all things mind, body and spirit, All Well and Good Day is on at Eumundi Markets on September 6, while at Peregian Beach, the Conscious Life Festival is on August 2 and 3. The Sunshine Coast Healthy Lifestyle Expo is being held in Caloundra later this month and is well worth checking out.

JOIN THE CULTURE CLUB The Sunshine Coast and its hinterland are home to an impressive array of art galleries of varying sizes and styles, with plenty to satisfy the most seasoned art lover. Our advice? Start up at Cooroy at the Butter Factory, which has a changing program of events and exhibitions. Then drive down to Eumundi and hit the visitors centre, where you’ll be pointed in the right direction. Take a trip out to Kenilworth to check out Lasting Impressions Gallery, then peruse Maleny's renowned galleries, before heading back to the Caloundra Regional Gallery via Landsborough. Buderim has lots of galleries, including Tiffany Jones Fine Art. Finish up at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery, which will soon be showing architect John Mainwaring’s large collection of paintings and prints.

TAKE A TOUR

We’re spoilt for choice for waterbased tours. Whether you want to head out to sea, stick to the rivers, or stickybeak at the McMansions from the canals, there are boats of all shapes and sizes up for hire across the region. It’s a good time to check out Fraser Island, with companies such as Sunrover and Fraser Island Adventure Tours. Companies such as Off Beat Eco Tours offer day trips into the Conondale National Park. But not all tours involve the water or require four-wheel drives. For something a little different, and perfect in the cooler weather,

try a tour in a style you might not be accustomed to. Freedom Wheels offers motorcycle tours on HarleyDavidson bikes and trikes. For a trip to the hinterland in luxury, get on to Champers Rolls-Royce Hire. If you really like the slower pace, especially with a glass in your hand, there are plenty of wineries in our hinterland, including Noosa Valley Wines in Doonan, Maleny’s Big Barrel and Flame Hill, and Settlers Rise in Montville. And these locals are producing a pretty decent drop. Head over to Eumundi, Yandina, Kenilworth, Montville and Maleny to see for yourself, but if you plan to partake, a wine tour with a designated driver is very civilised and sensible. Sunshine Wine Tours offers various excursions where you can taste and buy at the wineries in the region as well as sample cheese, fudge and more. Mystic Mountain Tours also offers the Blackall Range Wine Trail – the perfect way to stay warm on a cool winter’s day.

• This weekend the Maleny Wood Expo is on again. If you love the smell of timber (and who doesn’t?), it’s a great excuse to take the family up to Maleny.

• If you love an orchid, a trip to Gympie might be on the cards this weekend, when the town hosts the Gympie Garden Expo.

• Check out the SS Dicky wreck, close to the f ags at Dicky Beach, before the sea (or the council) takes the last of the old steamer away. • Those ambling along the Conondale Range Great Walk must keep an eye out for the Strangler Cairn sculpture, created by internationally renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy. • Spend a day or two at Eudlo’s Chenrezig Institute, where you can stroll in the gardens, grab a vegetarian lunch in the cafe or bliss out with a meditation class.

here is something about markets that attracts people from all walks of life. Big love for health expo Organisers of the Sunshine Coast Healthy Lifestyle Expo have been overwhelmed with the response to the May event. Expo director and founder Annie Inf nite says the event, in its fourth year, has doubled in size every year since it began, with more than 100 exhibitors booked this year. She says they have been inundated with requests for stall space and they have f lled every nook and cranny to accommodate exhibitors, but they are full to capacity. “We’ve been asked to move it to a capital city, however, we’re adamant that we’re staying on the Sunshine Coast,” Inf nite says. “Our vision is that people need a place where they can become educated and informed on living a healthier life.” The event aims to provide people with information on living a more sustainable, healthy lifestyle covering everything from cooking to f tness, along with sustainability initiatives.

“The whole idea behind this is healthy you, healthy planet,” she says. This year’s expo will include a Fitness expo, featuring a range of activities such as outrigger canoeing, the Coastal Assassins Roller Derby, martial arts, yoga and aerial f tness. For those interested in food, the one-day Food Farmacy Zone will feature demonstrations by chefs specialising in healthy eating choices. A safer place to catch a cab A new late-night taxi pick-up zone at Maroochydore will provide a safer place to wait for a cab. The new taxi zone will be trialled for 12 months alongside the new Maroochydore Bus Station. Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson says under the trial, pre-booked taxis will pick up passengers from the new bus

station between 10pm and 4am on Fridays and Saturdays. The trial, which will begin on Friday May 30, is welcomed by Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson, who says it will improve safety. If you are one of the millions regularly logging in to Pinterest you might be pleased to hear about the site’s new search tool. Designed to help people quickly sort through some 30 billion Pins on the service’s bulletin boards, it aims to help people tap into its user-posted content in a way traditional search engines such as Google or Bing don’t handle well. Pinterest users can turn to the new Guided Search feature for answers to questions such as how to make a delicious breakfast, where to go on holiday or how to customise a scooter. The site has more than 750 million online bulletin boards with a combined total of about 30 billion Pins from people sharing images on myriad interest from travel to food to sport and more. Space capsule expected to fetch $2 million A historic piece of technology is going up for auction next week. German f rm Lempertz has unveiled plans to auction a Soviet-era space capsule dating back to the 1970s, which carried three cosmonauts into space. According to the auction house it was developed during the SovietAmerican space race during the Cold War. A British company f rst bought the capsule, which was also used for a short unmanned mission in 1978 and then for training. The capsule has been extensively restored, with all trace of the searing burn marks it picked up on re-entry to the earth’s atmosphere removed. The capsule is expected to fetch more than $2 million when it is auctioned on May 7. AAP

Twitter to the rescue Australian academics are turning to Twitter in a bid to defend Jakarta from monsoonal f ash f ooding. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll plot f ood-related tweets on a map to create a living picture of where the f oods hit hardest. The information could help divert f ood protection to where it is needed most, says Dr Tom Holderness from the University of Wollongong. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Twitter data about f ooding will have a wealth of information to help us understand and improve urban resilience,â&#x20AC;? Holderness says. In January the city of 10 million was paralysed by the worst f oods in several years, with more than 30,000 residents evacuated. The idea was enough to convince Twitter to award Holderness and his team one of six highly coveted â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;data grantsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; from a pool of more than 1300 applications. Holderness says the grant will help his team perfect their tweetmapping platform. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll examine how closely f ood-related tweets

posted during several monsoon seasons match the governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s f ood maps, and which parts of the city are hardest hit. In a similar project last year, f ref ghters used Twitter to map and respond quickly to bushf res that tore through the Blue Mountains in NSW. n entrepreneurial University of the Sunshine Coast business student has developed an app to take some of the stress out of studying. Students may never again experience the sinking feeling that comes when a technical glitch – or simply hitting the wrong key – causes an important unsaved computer f le to disappear into thin air. Julian White has created an app featuring a set-and-forget program which recognises and automatically saves all study-oriented computer f les. “I designed the app, called STUDYvault, to help students more easily and effectively make quick, reliable back-ups of their work,” White says. The 21-year-old from Buderim, who is a third-year business management student, operates a small home-based business called Hivemind Technology. “My USC studies have really helped in both the IT and the business side of this project,” he says. “STUDYvault is basically a small set-and-forget 16GB Micro USB drive that plugs into your computer and works hand-in-hand with my app to ensure reliable back-ups are made – and it is small enough to leave there all the time. “The app can be bought on its own for people’s own devices, but I recommend the STUDYvault USB for its waterproof, drop-proof and crush-proof qualities.”

White is seeking support to market the app through a campaign on kickstarter.com, a website that brings together creators and potential backers. He says the appeal of his app over existing options is its recognition of key words to automatically back up study-related f les. USC Innovation Centre’s entrepreneur-inresidence Dean Alle, who also organises real-world opportunities for students of the University’s New Venture Operation course, says the app’s simplicity and the ease of setting it up could make it successful. Veronica Fowler has spent the past 12 months researching, planning and creating her business, Natural Cushion Cottage, which she has launched through online shopping site Myshopify. “My greatest passions would probably be nature and creativity,” Fowler says. Her cushions feature photos of bush, beach and nature scenes, printed on cotton using waterbased dyes. She uses eco zippers and the cushion inserts are made from recycled PET plastic bottles. he end of the f nancial year is fast approaching and now is the time to explore your end-of-f nancial-year strategies. Here are some ideas that may benef t you now and in retirement. The f rst option to explore is making tax-deductible contributions to super. If you are self-employed, or not employed, and earn less than 10 per cent of your income from employment wages, you may be eligible to make a personal taxdeductible contribution to super. Wage earners can also take advantage of this system by making salary sacrif ce contributions to super. You can sacrif ce your pre-tax

salary or bonus into super, rather than receiving it as cash. This contribution amount is taxed at 15 per cent, rather than your marginal rate of tax. For example, you may save tax of around $7500 by making an eligible contribution of $25,000 before June 30. If your adjusted income is less than $33,156 per annum and you make a personal after-tax contribution to super, the Federal Government will match your contributions with 50 cents for every dollar up to a maximum of $500. To get the maximum benef t you need to contribute $1000. This provides, in effect, a 50 per cent return on your investment. The scheme also operates for income of more than $33,156, but the government contribution is progressively scaled back. If you have reached 55, you may wish to access your superannuation savings by starting a transition to retirement pension (TTR). The main advantage of a TTR is the earnings, including capital gains, on the assets

backing the pension, become tax free. Once you reach age 60, the pension payments will be received tax free. This strategy could provide disposable income, allowing you to salary sacrif ce more of your employment earnings to super and potentially reduce your tax liability, or help you to move to part-time employment before retirement. You may also want to prepay investment loan interest to reduce your tax during this f nancial year. You may be able to prepay up to 12 months interest on the loan and bring forward your entitlement to the tax deduction to this f nancial year, depending on your personal circumstances. This may be benef cial if you expect to have a large taxable income this year and a smaller income next year. Air today CHINA’S ARTISTIC COMMUNITY HAS A UNIQUE WAY OF PROTESTING ABOUT POLLUTION.

eijing artist Liang Kegang returned from a business trip in southern France with well-rested lungs and a small item of protest against his home city’s choking pollution: a glass jar of clean Provence air. He put it up for auction before a group of about 100 Chinese artists and collectors earlier this year, and it fetched 5250 yuan (about $900). “Air should be the most valueless commodity, free to breathe for any vagrant or beggar,” Liang says. “This is my way to question China’s foul air and express my dissatisfaction.” Liang’s work is part of a gust of recent artistic protest – and entrepreneurial gimmickry – ref ecting widespread dissatisfaction over air quality in China, where cities often are immersed days on end in harmful pollutants at levels many times what is considered safe by the World Health Organization. The chronic problem has spurred brisk markets for dust masks and home air purif ers. China’s senior leaders have pledged to clean the country’s air, partly in response to a citizenry

increasingly vocal about environmental issues. But it is a daunting task that must be balanced with demands for economic development and employment crucial to maintaining stability. In February, a group of 20 Beijing artists wearing dust masks lay on the ground and played dead in front of an altar at the city’s Temple of Heaven park in a performance art protest. In March, independent artists in the southern city of Changsha held a mock funeral for what they imagined would be the death of the city’s last citizen because of smog. “If smog cannot be effectively cleaned up, what it will leave us is death and cities of death,” artist Shao Jiajun says. Liang’s contribution is a short, ordinary glass preserves jar with a rubber seal and a f ip-top. It has three small, handwritten paper labels: one with the name and co-ordinates of the French village, Forcalquier, where he closed the jar; one saying ‘Air in Provence, France’ in French; and one with his signature in Chinese and the date, March 29.

This piece of work really suits the occasion.” Liang is not the only one to make money from China’s air-pollution angst. Entrepreneurs also see the potential, and so do tourism off cials in parts of the country where skies are clear. n the luxury car business, it never pays to get too comfortable. That might sound a bit ironic in a business that’s basically about, well, making people comfortable. But for the manufacturers, there’s never a moment’s rest. Just when a luxury marque might imagine it’s found its little niche, a rival jumps in and shakes things up. That’s exactly what Inf niti – the luxury arm of Japanese carmaker Nissan – has done with its latest model, the Q50. While the Japanese brand has been in Australia for a couple of years, this is its f rst all-new model to arrive here. And it’s about to set the cat among the pigeons in this very competitive, increasingly

important market segment, where the Germans and Japanese marque Lexus have traditionally shared the spoils. Over the past decade, the MercedesBenz C-Class, BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Lexus IS have become increasingly familiar sights in family driveways around Australia, in most cases replacing fancy Falcons and high-end Holdens as the choice of the upwardly mobile. It is here that Inf niti is poised to make things decidedly uncomfortable for the established ‘big four’. We drove both variants. The overwhelming f rst impression when you jump into the Q50, regardless of which model you choose, is the sheer class and luxury feel of the cabin. It looks and feels plush, classy and high-tech. Most notable is the iPad-style centre console – a glossy, touch-screen arrangement that allows you to navigate with a swipe of the f nger through a menu of icons to access everything from satellite navigation, steering response settings, audio and climate control settings to a compass and choice of clocks. It’s even possible to upload your Facebook and Google accounts to this InTouch system, which also incorporates an ‘App garage’. Other cockpit controls are tactile and well-placed, while the

instrument binnacle is attractive and functional. Mechanically, the Q50 is a mixed bag. The 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine – ironically based on a powerplant sourced from Mercedes-Benz – is good without being outstanding. At idle it’s a little rough, putting a discernible shudder through the otherwise serene cabin when the car is at ease. It’s smoother when you add some revs and fairly hushed at highway speeds.

It blends well with the seven-speed auto and its thirst of 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres is close to the benchmarks for this segment. The engine is reasonably responsive but seems to lack the low-range punch of the twin-turbo diesel in the C-Class Benz; nor can it match the free-spinning crispness of the Beemer’s oil-burner. It does, however, give the Inf niti an important point of difference over

the Lexus IS. The Lexus can only offer only a choice of 2.5-litre or 3.5-litre petrol V6s – or the new IS300h hybrid – which brings us to our second week in the Q50. That was spent in the Q50 petrol-electric hybrid, which will go head-to-head with the Lexus IS in chasing the eco-conscious buyer. By combining a punchy 3.5-litre V6 with a self-charging electric motor, the Q50 delivers total outputs of 268 kilowatts and 546 Newton metres – meaning it will scamper to the speed limit in a brisk 5.1 seconds. While it’s more powerful, the Inf niti Hybrid isn’t as smooth or as seamless as the Lexus – nor is it quite as frugal. The Inf niti, however, can be driven in extended electric-only EV mode at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour. The Q50 shades its Japanese rival in terms of style – both inside and out. It’s a beautifully-sculpted and proportioned piece of metal. Overall it looks sleek, sexy and very contemporary. Higher-spec models with larger, 19-inch wheels and sports suspension evoke an even sportier, athletic gait. It’s impressively spacious inside, while boot space is good in the diesel models but less so in the Hybrid. Inf niti claims the Q50’s front seats, designed using research by NASA engineers, offer new levels of spinal support and greater comfort over long trips. It means that Q50 owners will be able to get comfortable – and stay that way – for longer periods. Even if rival car-makers no longer can do the same.

wedish car manufacturer Volvo is celebrating its golden anniversary. More than 6.8 million cars have been produced in its Torslanda factory over the past 50 years. Models like the Amazon, P1800 and 240 have become part of Sweden’s cultural heritage. Here’s how the iconic car has evolved through the years:

1960s The Volvo Amazon was the f rst model produced in the new Torslanda factory in 1964. In production since 1957, Volvo’s PV544 was its main competitor. More than 600,000 Amazons were manufactured. The P1800 sports car was the second model produced at Torslanda. Roger Moore as Simon Templar in the British TV series The Saint helped the P1800 acquire a halo that still shines. In 1966 the Volvo 140 was launched – the f rst entirely new model since the Torslanda factory opened – and established Volvo’s

reputation for automotive safety. The 45 Combi followed.

1970s Volvo’s 240 was launched, a model that came to symbolise the Swedish manufacturer for many years. The 240 was produced until 1993, with a turbocharged version produced in the 1980s, and more than 100,000 car builders in the Torslanda factory contributed to it rolling out globally.

1980s In 1982 the 700 series was introduced, with the Volvo 760, symbolising a new age for Volvo. It was followed by the Volvo 740.

1990s The 940 and its big brother the 960 started production in 1990. In 1991 there was a revolution. The Volvo 850 project was the largest and most expensive in Volvo’s history and described by Pehr G Gyllenhammar, CEO of Volvo from 1970 to 1994,

Although most cars are forthcoming with basic information like speed, engine revolutions per minute and coolant temperature, there’s a lot more data they could share if allowed to. The trivia is wide-ranging. How much power and torque are produced with every tap of the pedal? What forces is the driver under during braking or going into a curve? Such information is hardly necessary to operate a car. But for anyone who wants to know it, all you need is an OBD-2 connection, a smartphone and the proper app. OBD stands for on-board diagnosis. Mechanics can hook up their diagnostic tools to the OBD-2 socket to check on warning signals the car’s computer has registered and stored. But you don’t have to be a

mechanic to take advantage of the connection if you want to get real-time vehicle and driving data from the car and onto your smartphone. “This is a fun pastime for people who are very keen on their car,” says Harald Schmidtke of the German Association of Automobile Tuners (VDAT). Drivedeck Sport Pro is one adaptor and Lescars also has one. Both performed well in a recent test by German computer magazine Computerbild. Drivedeck Sport Pro, at about $437, sends data about performance, revolutions, cross acceleration and air mass live to an iPhone or Android smartphone through Bluetooth. The data can be displayed in a format that resembles a rounded dashboard gauge and can be stored on a computer for later evaluation. According to Computerbild, the app is set up for 500 different car models. Owners of nonsupported cars need only ask for

the manufacturer to provide the proper format. However, it does not work with diesel-powered cars. Lescars’ adapter uses Wi-Fi to share data and works with a variety of apps. The magazine tested it with Dashcommand, which works with petrol and diesel-powered cars. The

review was favourable, noting the amount of data transmitted and the variety of functions and ways to view the data, even if the controls could be fussy. While the apps are a bit of fun, enthusiasts should be aware the data the adapters generate won’t be as precise as your mechanic’s information. AAP

The Housing Industry Association believes that the industry is set for an exciting period of growth in demand for new housing

Peters says the f gures are further conf rmation that the recovery in housing construction is well underway. “Lower interest rates are working,” he says. “There is further evidence self-managed superannuation funds are certainly gearing into property at the moment. Peters says the housing sector looks like it will take over from mining investment as the main driver of growth for the Australian economy. “The evidence is there that the housing market is picking up and we expect it to continue to do so,” he says. On the Sunshine Coast, Stuart Collins from the Housing Industry Association says the latest local f gures provide further evidence that a recovery is underway. “This improvement in activity gained hold in late 2013 and is continuing its solid start in the f rst few months of this year,” Collins tells MWP, adding that the recovery is widespread across the state, with the exception of central Queensland, which has been impacted by a slowing down of the resources sector. “Meanwhile, home building in southeast Queensland has surged ahead, with the Sunshine Coast leading the way with an increase of 57 per cent in overall activity when comparing total dwelling approvals with the

SURF REPORT with MWPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s man in the water

We all do it and we all curse and blame other people for doing it â&#x20AC;&#x201C; letting others in on the secret stash of waves we f nd. Easter Saturday at Pitta Street was a prime example. It was pumping and 100 surfers were onto it! Human nature! As for this Saturday it looks like WSW winds are coming, making it a tad cool. So you might consider cracking out the wetsuit, although the water is still very warm. But there is always the least favourite option of warming the suit! Wink! Drink water to keep the f ow! Waves will be small but hopefully there will be a few sliders so enjoy yourself. Me? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be f shing off the back of my stand-up. Hopefully the sharks will leave my lure alone this time. Stay tuned. To date I have caught tuna, mackerel, baby sharks and a very angry albatross who attacked my hand like a pit ball.

ESTUARY: Plenty of bream are around the snags off Cotton Tree with yabbies and small pillies best. Catch f athead and trevally on live baits and lures from Twin Waters to the cod hole. Diver whiting on cured worms are plentiful, drifting over sand banks in the Bli Bli area. Mud crabs are still about with the mouths of the creeks best. SURF: Dart will be along Mudjimba Beach on pippies. Find sand whiting at North Shore using beach worms. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll catch trevally and f athead on live whiting at the northern end of Maroochy Bar, and bream at Pincushion using fowl gut. Shovel-nose rays and jew will be at Alexandra Headland. OFFSHORE: Red emperor and coral trout are in good numbers, but watch their size, with Murphyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Reef and 12 Mile the best using whole baits. Squire, sweetlip and parrot will be at the Gneerings and down at Caloundra Nine Mile â&#x20AC;&#x201C; try squid and small pillies for better sizes. FRESHWATER: Somerset has bass and golden perch still taking deep-diving lures or jigged shrimps at Queen Street and up around Neilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rock. Lake Macdonald has bass â&#x20AC;&#x201C; trolling the weed line is the best.
