YOU CHOOSE. THE MINI COUNTRYMAN: We know what you’re thinking. A bigger MINI? Really? Yes really. More than 4 metres long, the big MINI Countryman has four doors and four or five seats! It’s all big, especially the peace of mind price. THE MINI PACEMAN: It’s a man but its not a MINI Countryman. It’s a Sports Activity Coupé but it’s not the Coupé. The MINI Paceman puts a slant on things with deliberately daring design and has the free styling freedom to be whom ever you wish to be. Year Model 2014 MINI Cooper Paceman

e have a lot of high achievers on the Sunshine Coast – sportspeople and business leaders, musicians and philanthropists. But at MWP we think there is a segment of the community that often gets overlooked – and it’s a pity, because in this group are some extraordinary Sunshine Coasters that deserve a bit of attention. This week Sam Walker has discovered some of our oldest citizens who are f t, active and inspirational. She is talking to a handful of locals, who are in their 70s, 80s and beyond, and discovers they are not to be found playing lawn bowls or strolling sedately on the beach, but are undertaking activities we would expect of those half their age. For some insight and inspiration, turn the page. For inspiration of a completely different kind, head over to My Property Preview, which starts on page 38. I recently went to check out a HIA award-winning home in Pelican Waters and, wow! I can see why it won multiple awards. Magnif cent homes like this are often hard to put into words and pictures, but we’ve tried to give you an idea of what this stunner is like, over on page 38. However, what’s really lovely about this house are the people who own it. Thanks Jon and Nikki for showing me around. As for the rest of this week’s mag – in motoring, Peter Atkinson is behind the wheel of a compact little Alfa Romeo over on page 32. In my style we have some pieces to beef up your winter wardrobe – that’s on page 30. And in agenda (on page 26) we take to the skies and check out Etihad Airways’ newest offering to the world’s multi-millionaires. Enjoy! Jemma Pearson

here was a time when 70 seemed old. Perhaps it is the privilege of youth that taints our outlook or perhaps society’s changing attitude to ageing is shedding a different light on what it means to be a senior citizen. With nearly 30 per cent of Sunshine Coast residents aged over 55 and predictions there will be more than one billion people globally aged over 60 within the next decade, positive ageing has become a hot topic around the world. Our federal treasurer Joe Hockey is adding fuel to the f re, announcing that as part of next week’s budget the retirement age will be lifted to 70 for everyone born after 1965. Perhaps it is just as well that 70 has become the new 60. There is no doubt that advancements in medicine and improved standards of living have increased our longevity. But maybe our attitudes have also changed. Where once we reached ‘old age’ and pulled out our slippers and rocking chair, got a blue rinse and wiled away the days, today’s seniors seem to be digging their claws in and wrestling for every last morsel of youth and vitality.

The grey nomads have certainly set an example of fun and adventure. And more power to them. The Coast’s more mature residents are no exception. They are out getting degrees, breaking world records and taking classes in everything from yoga to martial arts. They are cycling, dancing, gardening and where possible, living it up. Meet Margy Basham (82) and Tibby Kemp (81). These two octogenarians take to our waterways about three times a week as part of a social group of dragon boaters. Basham claims she is starting to feel the effects of age with “a few aches and pains I didn’t know I had”. But she remains sprightly and energetic and loves dragon boating with a passion. She began eight or nine years ago after surviving breast cancer and initially paddled with a group of breast cancer survivors. They no longer have enough members to f ll a boat so Basham has hooked up with another club, which paddles on the Maroochy River. “At the moment, because of my age, I’ve told them I’m not interested in any regattas or things,” she says. “But it’s all fun and f tness.” Interestingly, Basham didn’t play any sport from
the time she left school until she took up dragon boating. “I suppose it’s like any sport that anyone loves, you get hooked on it and you just love it.” Kemp started dragon boating about two years ago, just after she turned 80. A friend suggested she should try it and like Basham, she loves it. Both women also do indoor rowing. Kemp holds two world records in the 80 to 90 age group of 500-metre indoor rowing. She tried to talk down the achievement as not too important, but being the best in the world is an accomplishment worth recognition. She also cycles two or three times a week. Michael Nagel, associate professor in human development and learning at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s School of Education, specialises in brain development. While his work typically deals with neuro development in children and adolescents, he is increasingly looking at the impact on brain development as we age. “Physical exercise is paramount,” Nagel tells MWP. “It is probably the most important thing you can do for your health.” Research has shown the surprising and positive M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

effects exercise has on limiting the decline of the brain. As the brain gets older it shrinks and memory diminishes, but he says studies have shown exercise keeps the brain from shrinking. “Even a moderate amount of exercise (30 to 45 minutes two or three times a week) has shown to enhance many cognitive aspects and overall brain health.” Nagel says a study, which focussed on people aged over 70, also found people who are very active typically did not have any sign of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. While non-physical leisure activities don’t appear to protect the brain as much as physical exercise, Nagel says it is still important to exercise the mind. “We should be teaching as many old dogs new tricks as possible,” he says. “When you engage in neurological activity you are building new connections in the brain.” Activities like yoga are very benef cial because they help maintain f exibility, however, Nagel also recommends meditation. And there is no harm in
starting those habits now. “Fundamentally for people as we become older we do start to become more sedentary,” he says. “We set patterns early in life.” Fred McKay and Bob Grandin might not be hitting the local gym but they are both students at the University of the Sunshine Coast. McKay, 78, is in his second year of a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in English literature. He is studying part-time and says mixing with students of all ages helps keep him youthful. It is a big change for a man who left school in his native Scotland at the age of 10 and went straight to work. He was never without a job until he retired in 1989. His career included driving buses and then Melbourne’s trams before joining the air force. Seventy-three-year-old Grandin is a selfconfessed “lifelong” student. He graduated in April with his sixth degree. This one was a Bachelor of Arts with a major in psychology. But he hasn’t f nished yet. Grandin, who is also an adjunct senior lecturer at USC, has just enrolled

in a PhD to investigate street kids and young people who are disengaged from school. The Vietnam vet has always had an interest in young people who don’t engage with traditional schooling, having run two f exi-schools in the past. “My aim is to hear the voice of the young kids,” he says. He wants to know what they see as the barriers to education. “I believe schooling has to change, at least for some of the kids, if not for all of them.” Grandin has also been involved with the air force cadets in the past four or f ve years and found himself gliding again in his 70s. While he loves his study and the young people he works with, he is also aware that doing things – travel, study, working with young people – helps keep the brain active. Nagel says in terms of neuro connections for the brain, mental exercise is also important. This can be anything that gets your brain working, whether it is Sudoku or chess or just learning something new. Perhaps our approach to ageing is all wrong. Nagel says our attitudes are, at least partially, def ned by the labelling we put on everything. You are classed as a senior citizen at the age of 60 and the aged pension kicks in at 65. But how many 60- to 65-year-olds think they are old? Perhaps we should just drop the labels and embrace life, regardless of age. continued over>

Loving life at 107 At 107 Monica Guy is Queensland’s oldest woman. And while she has slowed her pace since reaching the century milestone, her daughter Heather Wade says she still has a lively spark. Guy, who is a resident at Claremont Private Residential Care at Nambour, and conf ned to a wheelchair, lived by herself until her late 90s. “I think what’s kept her alive is she’s so interested in stuff,” Wade says. Born in New Zealand to Australian parents, her family moved to Queensland’s Darling Downs when she was about three, and to
Buderim when she was about 12. She married Harold Guy and they moved to Charters Towers for many years, eventually retiring on the Sunshine Coast in the 1970s. Described by Wade as “feisty”, Guy, who was an accomplished horsewoman and excellent tennis player, was an active participant in many aspects of the community into her 80s and 90s. She was an excellent public speaker and was the Australian president of the Penguins speaking club and a judge of public speaking. She was a keen gardener, president of the CWA for many
years and involved in War Widows and Probus. A keen artist, Guy was a foundation member and president of the Sunshine Coast Art Group and her paintings make up part of the collection at Queensland’s Parliament House. “She is quite a lady and she always rises to the occasion,” Wade says. Guy is still particular about her looks and her clothes. She likes to wear nice clothes with a bit of bling on them – and Wade says her sense of style def nes her and was evident in everything she did, whether it was fashion, interior design or gardening.
Fun facts: The blue rinse, which became synonymous with older women, was made popular in Britain in the 1930s and really took off after WWII. It was a dilute dye, used by women to counter yellow-grey hair and give it more of a blue-grey look. Wellknown members of the blue rinse brigade include the late Queen Mother and Raine Countess Spencer. The blue rinse met a timely end in 2006 due to a lack of demand – the result of more advanced dyes capable of covering the grey.

HOW FACEBOOK AFFECTS SELF-ESTEEM
L
oneliness and a lack of self-worth could result from a lack of ‘likes’ on Facebook, according to researchers from the University of Queensland. Two projects led by Dr Stephanie Tobin from UQ’s School of Psychology have identif ed the effects social networking sites have on users’ feelings of social belonging. Tobin says the studies found that active participation on social media sites gives users a greater sense of connectedness. “Social networking sites such as Facebook, which has more than a billion users a month, give people immediate reminders of their social relationships and allow them to communicate with others whenever they want,” she says. “Our research shows that feelings of belonging are threatened when users stop generating content or participating online, and when information they have posted does not receive a response from others.”
50%
To examine how participants felt when deliberately ignored, the researchers conducted two studies on ‘lurking’ or passive Facebook participation and on ostracism. The f rst study recruited users who frequently posted online. Half the participants were asked to actively post, while the other half, dubbed lurkers, were to simply observe friends’ status updates. In the second study, participants used accounts set up by researchers and were encouraged to post and comment on the posts of others. Half the participants received the feedback while the other half didn’t and were effectively ostracised. Tobin says the f ndings showed lurkers and ostracised participants from each study experienced lower levels of belonging and meaningful existence than those who participated and received a response. Those who were ostracised also experienced lower levels of selfesteem and control. “The studies allowed us to

examine how belonging depends on how much people are sharing on Facebook, the kinds of experiences they are having on the site and whether they are being ignored or validated by others,” she says. “The results clearly identif ed that active participation is necessary to decrease feelings of social rejection.”
The University of Queensland researchers are doing follow-up studies to examine the effects of being ‘seen’ but not validated by audiences of different sizes and how sharing different kinds of photographs affects belonging and well-being more broadly.

SUPER DEBATE
Geoffrey Feeley
SHOULD YOU SELF-MANAGE YOUR SUPER?
financial services
Times are changing – more than ever people are demanding greater flexibility over their own investment options in super. Self Managed Super Funds (SMSFs) now account for the biggest slice of the super pie in Australia – ahead of the traditional industry super funds.1
So why NOT self manage? A lot of benefits of superannuation can be obtained WITHOUT having to manage your own fund. ES&A offer a unique position on this argument as one of our Senior Advisers DOES have a SMSF and the other does NOT. As Financial Advisers we get paid for our investment and financial advice only (regardless of which super fund you choose) and have actively recommended clients invest in ALL forms of super – from opening industry super fund accounts to helping clients open their own self managed super funds.
Taking advantage of an on-shore tax haven (for the over 60’s)
Not yet 60? Whether retired or not, why wait until age 60? A 55 year old can live TAX FREE from their superannuation and create a tax free estate plan.
Want to purchase an investment property? It’s easy to understand the interest in SMSFs when you consider that you could use your existing super funds as a deposit on an investment property; take out a mortgage; and purchase your next investment property in superannuation – with the rent and your 9.25% super guarantee contributions funding the loan!
How big is YOUR TAX refund? One of the features of a SMSF is taking advantage of the tax system in Australia. With good planning in your own super fund you could be paying NO tax and still receive a tax refund from the ATO in retirement.

On Wednesday, 21st May at 6pm. ES&A will be holding a seminar that will debate the pros and the cons on starting and operating your own self managed super fund. We have invited an independent SMSF Accountant to help answer questions and debate the merits of operating a self managed super fund. We will also discuss some of the investment ‘basics’ that we believe all investors should know and how to manipulate these rules to suit you – regardless if your super fund is self managed or not. Attendance is FREE and the seminar is expected to go for approximately 2 hours with a hot supper served at half time.

LADIES OAKS DAY LINE-UP
AAP
The 10th annual Ladies Oaks Day at Corbould Park is gearing up to be the biggest and best to date. While the horses will take centre stage with live racing all day, they could be temporarily upstaged by the live performances of Evermore and Sheppard. The two headline acts are expected to be a drawcard for Coast music fans. Evermore have been nominated for seven ARIA Awards and released three platinum-selling albums with hits including Hey Boys and Girls and It’s Too Late (Ride On). Brisbane’s Indie-folk band Sheppard is touring the United Kingdom at the moment but will be back in time to take to the stage for Ladies Oaks Day. Sheppard’s second single, Geronimo, just spent three weeks at number one in the Australian charts, ending a 12-week run for Pharell Williams’ single Happy.

Evermore Ladies Oaks Day will feature all the things the races are popular for – great fashion with the Fashions on the Field expecting to attract some stylish competition; great entertainment and plenty of horseracing action. This year’s event will be in support of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation so race-goers are encouraged to wear a splash of red. Ladies Oaks Day will be held at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club on Friday May 30. Gates open at 10am. Entry is $25.
Cafe Envy celebrated its 10th birthday this year and owner Nicole Hoffman will discuss her successful business strategy at a Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network function next week. At the Sky High Success High Tea Luncheon, Hoffman will discuss leaving her career as a paralegal to pursue her dream of opening a cafe. Over the last decade that dream has expanded to include two premises and she has devised a franchising model to take the business even further. The high tea is being held at The Edge, Mooloolaba Wharf from 11.30am on May 16. The cost is $55 for SCBWN members and $65 for guests. Nicole Hoffman To book tickets call Michele on 0412 525 854.

Palmer says the free weekend, which will also include live music and entertainment, is designed to give back to his constituents. “I wanted to say thank you to the people of Fairfax and what better way than to offer them a free weekend of fun with their families,” Palmer says. Fairfax residents should expect a home-delivered brochure in the coming weeks, which will double as an entry pass.

If Coolum residents observe f ying foxes on their property during the dispersal period they are advised to contact the council on 0409 736 512.
The Sunshine Coast Council last week started the first flying fox dispersal action at Cassia Wildlife Corridor at Coolum. The non-lethal dispersal action was in response to community concerns and was undertaken in accordance with State and Federal government permits. Councillor Stephen Robinson says it was the f rst of a series of dispersals that will take place until May 23, in an attempt to encourage the f yingfox roost to relocate north-west to a large pocket of national park. Robinson says it is too early to determine any overall outcomes and there is no guarantee of success, but the f ying foxes appear to have responded well to the

Bits and Bytes >> Measuring a far-f ung planet Free
The State Library of Queensland has released the Floodlines app, which uses innovative augmented reality technology to retrace the impacts of the devastating 2011 f ood and Cyclone Yasi. The app simulates the changing water levels of the Brisbane River over a 48-hour period and takes you through cyclone-affected areas in north Queensland. Simply download the free app and print off the marker sheets on the State Library website and watch amazing 3D models come to life. This is a truly remarkable app that, with a bit of preparation, shows the f oods in a completely new light. Floodlines is a free app available for IOS. The marker sheets can be downloaded at slq.qld.gov.au/f oodlines/exhibitions/memory#markers. Paul Hamilton is the Primary ICT co-ordinator at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. Scientists have for the first time measured the rotation of a planet in another solar system – a juvenile, gassy giant spinning at a breakneck 90,000 kilometres per hour. Orbiting a star about 63 light years from Earth, Beta Pictoris b is more than 16 times larger and 3000 times more massive than our planet, but its days last only eight hours. “Beta Pictoris b spins signif cantly faster than any planet in the solar system” – at a rate of about 25 kilometres per second, a team of Dutch astronomers wrote in the journal Nature. Earth’s equator turns at 1700 kilometres per hour. The measurement, done with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, echoes a trend observed in our own solar system of increasing spin velocity with higher planet mass. The planet orbits the star Beta Pictoris in the southern constellation of Pictor (The Painter’s Easel). Discovered nearly six years ago, it orbits its star at a distance eight times that of the Earth to the sun. Beta Pictoris b is a very young roughly 20 million years old – the Earth is 4.5 billion years. The astronomers used a technique called high-dispersion spectroscopy to measure changes in the wavelengths AAP of radiation emitted by the planet and so determine its spin velocity.

Apps in the hot seat Smartphone apps that enable regular motorists to taxi passengers around for a fee have been ruled out by the NSW transport department. In a statement on ‘ride-sharing’ apps, Transport for NSW says drivers who offer lifts for money must be accredited in accordance with the Passenger Transport Act, as must their vehicles. “The law is clear and has not changed,” a spokesman says. “The act requires drivers to be f t and proper persons and vehicles to comply with specif c standards.” The statement comes in response to a new, low-cost service offered by an app named Uber, which connects customers with taxi-like services offered by regular drivers, and the much-anticipated Backseat.me, which was launched in Sydney last week. The law appears to rule out the Uber ride-sharing service, but not apps such as GoCatch, which connect customers with authorised taxis or hire cars.

Nor does the law apply to, for instance, a group of friends sharing expenses or car-pooling. Under the law, drivers must pass a police check and their vehicles must have a duress alarm, GPS tracking and security tracking in order to gain accreditation from Roads and Maritime Services. Uber’s ride-sharing service is limited to licensed drivers aged at least 24 whose vehicle has at least four doors and was made after 2005. Drivers must have comprehensive insurance and no criminal record. Breaches of the act can lead to prosecution and f nes of up to $110,000. AAP

In what has been dubbed a coup for the Coast’s business community, the presentation will be delivered by CareerOne CEO Karen Lawson. Collaborative consumption, regarded by Time magazine as one of the 10 ideas that will change the world, and Lawson’s presentation will explore how this trend will impact everything – from travel to f nance, retail to the labour market and all aspects of business in between. “Traditionally, success and status has been displayed by accumulating possessions, but we’re now seeing a shift where consumers are less concerned about owning products; they are keen to rent, lend, swap, barter, gift and share products and
As you already know, building a new home is one of the biggest investments you can make in a lifetime. Here’s how you can get it right the f rst time: • Check with your building designer and make sure you’ve got the orientation of your new home right. This will make or break the liveability of the home • Do you know what the best and most cost effective type of home construction suits your site…what’s best building methods for sloping sites, acreage, waterfront, knock-down/ re-build or standard developer sites? • Does your wish list and your budget match? It’s been our experience that most people are amazed at just how affordable it can be to have an individually designed contemporary home that works with the orientation, dimensions of your site and budget.
services to bring their day-to-day costs down,” Lawson says. “This will impact signif cantly on how we do business in the future as consumers and businesses are likely to change their spending in traditional ways and access products and services online by connecting with everyday individuals rather than businesses. “Whether you prepare to embrace collaborative consumption and integrate it into your product or service offering or whether you change the way in which you work by making use of the resources it offers, all business owners should be aware of the concept or be left behind. “The reality is this is not a passing trend; it is a work revolution and existing businesses may need to evolve their business models to remain competitive.” Sunshine Coast Business Expo chair Ross Hepworth is delighted to welcome another high-prof le keynote speaker to the event, which has already added media personality Lisa Wilkinson to the line-up. Lawson will also contribute to a panel discussing the digital revolution, which will explore how businesses can improve productivity and boost prof tability through the effective use of digital tools. A limited number of sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities still exist for the expo, which will be held on May 28 and 29. For more information or to buy tickets ($59) to see Lawson speak, visit scbizexpo.org.au.

CORPORATE ACTIVITY ON THE RISE
Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim
After a very lean post-GFC period, the pace of Australian corporate activity is increasing rapidly. On April 1, BHP Billiton responded to speculation regarding a restructure of the group’s portfolio by stating that simplification is a priority, which led to further speculation about a demerger of assets. Last year BHP set out a new structure for its operations taking the form of four pillars – copper, coal, iron ore and petroleum, with potash a potential f fth pillar. The implication

was that any operation outside these pillars was not considered relevant to the long-term future of the group. We believe a likely demerger scenario would entail a distribution of shares in a new company containing the non-core assets to shareholders of ASX-listed BHP stock. Shareholders of London Stock Exchange-listed stock would not receive a distribution of these new company shares, but instead would receive additional BHP shares as compensation. The non-core assets would likely include aluminium, manganese, nickel and some thermal coal operations along with the Cannington silver mine, which would represent a complete exit from four commodities. This would allow BHP to shrink to its key pillars in one move, but we are uncertain that it would create value for shareholders immediately. We estimate a slight loss in market value, as the cash f ow generated by the demerged company would lead to a lower valuation multiple than BHP currently trades on. While this could be offset by a rerating of the remaining BHP, a rerating is not a foregone conclusion. On this basis, it would appear the assets could generate more value if sold individually, although trade sale options may be limited in the current environment. Another interesting piece of corporate news is the bid for David Jones by South Africa-based retailer Woolworths (no connection with Woolworths traded on the ASX). The $4 cash per David Jones share also involves the payment of the interim dividend of 10 cents per share to shareholders on the register as at April 10. The bid amount represents a 25 per cent premium to the price ahead of the bid. David Jones last traded at $4 in June 2011, so this represents a premium for new shareholders over the past three years. It will be interesting to see if any other parties respond. The board has recommended the offer, but it is easy to envisage more steps in the takeover of an iconic Australian company. The only way to fly WHEN FLYING FIRST CLASS DOESN’T CUT IT, A LUXURY SUITE WITH A BUTLER WILL DO THE TRICK.
E
tihad Airways, a fast-growing Middle Eastern carrier, has laid out plans to offer passengers who find first-class seats a bit too tight, a miniature suite featuring a closed-off bedroom, private bathroom and a dedicated butler. It’s just the latest push by airlines worldwide to attract high-spending customers. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier announced the front-of-plane amenities as part of a broader rollout of plush new cabin offerings for dozens of long-range jetliners it plans to receive over the coming years. It is the latest in a series of premium offerings for the f ying elite by Etihad, which already woos f iers with perks including private f rstclass chefs and in-f ight nannies. Etihad chief executive James Hogan concedes offering what the airline says is the f rst-of-its-kind multi-room suite helps generate buzz, but that ultimately it is a serious effort to bring in more cash. “Obviously there’s going to be a halo effect in the positioning of Etihad Air as a premium carrier,” he
says. “But we wouldn’t do it unless we felt we could make money with it. This is a top-end market. There is demand here.” One passenger – or a couple – aboard each of its new A380s will be able to book a three-section miniature suite that the airline is calling a ‘residence’ at the very front of the plane’s upper deck. The 11.6-square-metre area includes a ‘living room’ partitioned off from the f rst-class aisle that includes leather seating, a chilled minibar and a 32-inch f at-screen TV. There is a separate bedroom with space for two that can be closed off from the rest of the cabin and a private bathroom with shower. A personal butler trained in London will be on hand to wait on passengers in the suite, giving them what the airline promises will be “discrete personal service and attention to detail found in the world’s most exclusive hotels”. Etihad expects to get its f rst of its A380s in December, which it will deploy on the Abu Dhabi to London route. Chief commercial off cer Peter
Baumgartner says additional A380s will likely be deployed on New York and Sydney routes as they’re added to the f eet. But the fancy new suite won’t come cheap. Baumgartner
says it will likely cost three to four times as much as regular f rst-class seats, or about $US21,000 (about $22,700) from Abu Dhabi to London. One way. AAP

t’s red, built in Italy by one of that country’s most romantic brands, and has a two-cylinder, 900cc engine. If you think I’m talking about a Ducati, you’d be wrong. But only just. Alfa Romeo’s latest MiTo baby car has more in common with a Ducati motorcycle than an Italian accent. The cute-as-a-button MiTo now has a motorcycle-sized engine – the remarkable TwinAir powerplant developed by corporate cousins Fiat and previously seen in cars like the tiny Fiat 500 Bambino. Unlike the Ducati’s famous V-Twin, the TwinAir uses a turbocharger to boost its performance, punching out a substantial 77 kilowatts from its tiny 875cc capacity.

[ That might not sound like much but it delivers surprisingly adequate performance in the MiTo – with a top speed of an impressive 183 kilometres per hour. Fortunately, the MiTo is a fairly small thing itself – the baby of the celebrated Italian marque and a sales success in its own right, attracting a younger group of buyers who fancy having this famous badge on their bonnet. This latest version of the MiTo certainly helps in that regard. It can be had for as little as $22,500, provided you don’t mind the micro-engine. We drove both the TwinAir entry-level Progression model and the more expensive, more powerful Distinctive variant with a 1.4-litre ‘MultiAir’ turbo engine that costs at least $2-grand more. And, to be honest, the twocylinder version was the one we preferred. The four-cylinder option delivers more power (99 kilowatts) – but driven, as our test machine was, through Alfa’s sometimes quirky TCT transmission, it has its limitations.
The TwinAir also has its performance issues – it takes a fairly leisurely 11.4 seconds to reach the speed limit – but it’s an engine full of character and interest and, just as importantly, you feel like you’re doing your share for the planet by just driving it. The TwinAir sips just 4.2 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres on average – although you’ll manage even better than that on the open road. While it lacks the low-down torque of larger engines, once it’s off and rolling the little engine punches well above its weight with a rather attractive, clattery exhaust note coming along for the ride.
The only time it’s found out is when trying to accelerate up hills – particularly if the MiTo has a decent load of passengers on board – when progress is rather slow. Beyond that, it skips along and feels perfectly at home in city traff c, with enough power to zip from lane to lane. The six-speed manual transmission has quite tall gearing, giving the little Alfa surprisingly long legs. Around town, for instance, it will happily reach 60 kilometres per hour in second gear without the engine screaming its lungs out. On the open road, that translates to a relaxed, loping gait when it’s in sixth-gear and effortlessly matching the speed limit. Only when climbing steep hills is it necessary to work the gearbox to keep the revs – and the power – on song. The TwinAir is offered in manual-only conf guration – but the six-speeder is slick and the clutch light enough to make self-changing a pleasure. The higher-spec MiTo was also impressive in its own way – mostly

because of the nice level of specif cation it offers for the $28,000 pricetag. <from previous page a full suite of electronic safety aides. The force-fed four-cylinder is reasonably sweet and free-spinning, as we’ve always expected of Alfa Romeo engines, but it’s very f at at low revs before the turbo cuts in. On more than one occasion we f oored the accelerator but, because the semi-automated transmission was stuck in a higher gear, it seemed an eternity before we got any response. Once revving, though, the engine works well. And it will do plenty of revving if you leave the drive selector in Dynamic mode (by far the preferred setting) – it will cause the little MiTo to scream a bit between upshifts. My wife, never a fan of baby cars at the best of times, didn’t have much time for the MiTo. That’s probably because to get the best out of it, you need to drive it hard and with some sporting intent. It’s there that the engine and transmission set-up is seen to better advantage, the throttle blipping on downshifts and the gearbox smartly ripping through
the ratios as you accelerate. In this environment the ‘bigger’ MiTo is quite an engaging thing, although it’s debatable whether it is more fun than the funky TwinAir. Alfas are invariably known for their great chassis and the MiTo is no
exception. It turns in assuredly, always feels f at and composed and, despite its f rm ride, soaks up most road imperfections without issue. When driven forcefully it rarely feels out of its depth. This second-generation MiTo also features the company’s new UConnect multi-media system – allowing you to connect your
iPhone via Bluetooth for hands-free calls as well as audio streaming and, cleverly, a text-to-voice function to read your SMS texts. Dash layout is functional if not as interesting or evocative as we’ve come to expect from Alfa. The MiTo is roomy enough inside – it’s a three-door hatch meaning rear-seat passengers aren’t exactly encouraged, although once in there they’ll f nd reasonable legroom and slightly compromised headroom. It’s f ne for the young ones, though. Cargo space is adequate, although bulky items will require one or both of the rear seats to be folded forward. That means the MiTo is best suited to younger buyers or perhaps empty-nesters, who don’t require huge amounts of carrying capacity. But hey, it’s much better than a Ducati.

ELECTRIC CARS A HIGHLIGHT OF EXPO OLGA BESNARD / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
The Sunshine Coast Healthy Lifestyle Expo is not all about alternative medicine and healthy food. Visitors to the May event can expect to see examples of electric cars on display with organisers expecting them to be a highlight of the expo. Klaus Langner, owner of Moffat Beach business Latronics, which specialises in manufacturing solar electricity systems, will be showcasing his Tesla Roadster with the aim of educating visitors about the new technology available. Langner bought the Roadster in December 2011, saying it can do about 400 kilometres on a battery, making it feasible to do a return trip to Brisbane. “It was the f rst fully electric car at the time, which was available for sale without having to import it,” Langner says. Times have changed in the space of a few short years with more manufacturers introducing electric cars to the market, including Nissan’s LEAF. But Australian Electric Vehicle Association Brisbane secretary Greg MacDonald says Australia is still a long way behind America and Europe. He says there are about 700 electric cars on Australian roads compared to tens of thousands in America. And Langner says about 25 per cent of new cars registered in Norway are electric vehicles. Australia’s vehicles are a mix of converted vehicles and manufacturer’s releases and most of

The Tesla Roadster is an American-produced electric car gaining in popularity around the world. them can travel about 150 kilometres on a battery. The Australian Electric Vehicle Association will also have a presence at the Healthy Lifestyle Expo. “There’s a lot of interest from the public,” MacDonald says, claiming they often get more attention than hot rods at car shows. He says most people are surprised at how they look and even more surprised at the way they drive. “They’re quieter, smoother and have better responses,” he says. “It’s actually a lot nicer to drive, which a lot of people don’t realise.” The Sunshine Coast Healthy Lifestyle Expo will be held at Caloundra Events Centre on May 25 and 25.
A convoy of 20 Minis headed through the hinterland for a leisurely Sunday morning drive last weekend, stopping at Mount Mee National Park for morning tea. MWP’s Ian ‘Britto’ Brittain took the wheel of a Mini Cabriolet for the nearly 200-kilometre round trip. The fun day out was organised by Coastline Mini Garage to celebrate the arrival of the latest Mini – the Cabriolet. Britto was impressed with the little vehicle. “The handling was put to the test when we rounded a blind corner and met with a tree branch in the middle of the road and the amazing handling characteristics of the Mini came to the fore when I swerved to miss the branch,” he says. To read Britto’s full review of the new Mini visit myweeklypreview.com.au and head to the motoring page.

Living the dream JEMMA PEARSON WENT ON A TOUR OF AN AWARD-WINNING HOME THAT TAKES PRIDE OF PLACE IN THE PELICAN WATERS CANALS.
E
ven surrounded by luxury waterfront properties, the multimillion-dollar awardwinning home of builder Jon Mees and his family stands out among the sinuous canals of Pelican Waters. When Jon and wife Nikki welcomed me into the home recently for a private tour, they told me when they planned the house they wanted to create a resort-style abode, and they couldn’t be happier with the result. With the help of architect Tim Christopher and interior designer Mark Gacesa, they have created a sanctuary for themselves, a perfect entertainer’s home, and a showcase for Jon’s skills as a builder. The quality, craftsmanship and detail of the build struck me as soon as I was welcomed inside the front gate. From there, I gingerly stepped over the water entry feature and into the leaf-shaped entry pavilion. Ahead of me was a central courtyard with sandy beach, pandanus and water feature (it f ows out under the hallway and connects to the pool). The courtyard acts as a point to stop and ref ect in the entryway, and f oods the area with light. On the ground f oor we passed by the theatre room, home off ce and guest bedroom with ensuite before the hallway tempted me further inside. The extensive use of glass and clever design create the sense that the outdoors is never far away, even in the cosier corners of the house. The hallway feeds into the main living area, which offers multiple zones for eating and relaxing

by the pool and canal. Water is everywhere. This is the couple’s dream home – a place to relax with family and friends – and there are multiple zones to do so. Jon tells me the family wanted to make sure that no matter where the wind was blowing or what the weather was doing, there was a place to relax – either in the kitchen by the aquarium, at the outdoor dining setting, by the poolside bar or on the built-in benches overlooking the canal. Water from the pool hugs the eastern side of the building – and I have to remind myself this is not the lobby of a Balinese hotel but a family residence. The kitchen features built-in appliances – there is no clutter to detract from the quality materials – and an unassuming door leads to a second kitchen where the real work is done. Upstairs is the main bedroom, three other bedrooms, an activity room and gym. Even up here the view is never far away – all rooms overlook the canal or nearby park. In fact the house has been designed so that no matter where you are in it, there is an expansive view to enjoy. Jon and Nikki tell me that’s why they chose the site – a covetable corner canal block. When it won multiple awards at last year’s Housing Industry Association Sunshine Coast event, it was lauded for its outstanding features and extraordinary workmanship. A standout area for the HIA judges was the master bedroom with its stunning ensuite. Walking into the main bedroom,

the walls curve past the walk-in robe and bar area before that awardwinning bathroom pulls the eyes with timber and pebbles, and a touchable stone bath with ceilingmounted rose. Back out into the leaf-shaped bedroom, and the bed seems to hover out over the canal thanks to the curved glass walls. Automated curtains and tinted windows ensure privacy. The C-Bus home automation system and integrated appliances all add to the ease of living. The challenge of f tting in furniture to the large, curvaceous spaces – even the media room is curved – was
solved by opting for custom-made furniture and f ttings. The use of curves in the design, added to the luxury materials such as lava rock and travertine tiles, along with a design that completely embraces the water, mean the Mees have achieved their vision with huge success. John tells me that builders never really put down roots for too long, but the family – who are relatively new to the Coast – say they are living in their dream home. It seems they have no desire to leave anytime soon, and as I take in that view from the canal-side seats, nor did I.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Personal relations and money matters are in the firing line this week rams. With Mars [your ruling planet] still reversing through your relationship zone, it will take a touch of tact and oodles of diplomacy [not your strong suit!] to get things back on track again.
TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Venus and Mars face off on the weekend, which sends ripples of discontent through a major relationship. Attached Taureans, your love life looks problematic, as you and your partner seem to be heading in opposite directions. Take the time to find some middle ground.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Mercury moves into your sign mid-week so you’re in the mood to mix and mingle. Plus let others know that you also need the time to tackle individual projects. On Sunday, don’t jump to conclusions about a child, teenager or friend.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Wednesday’s stern aspects are likely to put cranky crabs into hyper-sensitive mode. So be selective about who you mix with, as you’re liable to misread signals. There’s some respite on Saturday but process information carefully on Sunday.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] You’re very focused on professional projects at the moment but don’t put all your eggs in the one work basket. Diversify your interests, expand your contacts, experiment with creative ideas and keep your options open.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] You’re at your versatile Virgo best on Saturday when you’re in the mood to work, analyse, study, clean, tidy, solve tricky problems and multi-task to the max. On Sunday, things become confusing and disorganised as nebulous Neptune scrambles signals.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Avoid the strong temptation to blow the budget with some spontaneous binge shopping. Saturn cautions you to be unusually sensible, and save rather than spend. Librans are master diplomats, with the ability to calm and console those around them.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] This week is fabulous for taking a complicated situation and examining it under your forensic microscope. You’ll impress others with what you discover! But on Sunday the sun opposes Saturn, which increases your tendency to be critical of yourself [and others].
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] On Tuesday the sun and Jupiter activate your adventurous gene so it’s time to experiment and explore, as you seize the day. Mercury then marches through your relationship zone, from May 8-29. Singles – look beyond the exterior package that a potential partner presents.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Your ambitious goals may seem unreachable but don’t be discouraged. With plenty of planning and persistence, you can make your dreams come true. You’re keen to work hard this weekend but don’t let your perfectionist streak get out of control.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] You have an eclectic array of talents but they won’t truly blossom until you nurture them with the help of a teacher or mentor. Expect some communication problems on Sunday but don’t worry about living up to the expectations of others.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] When it comes to money, avoid making impulsive decisions that land you deeper in debt. What looks like a divine deal now could end up being a financial fiasco further down the track. Sunday is super for artists, actors, writers and musicians, as your creativity takes flight.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
Friday and Saturday are looking the goods, but I would suggest an early attack as SE winds are a comin’! The prediction for Sunday is an ESE wind – the worse kind. So hook into it! Looks like it is f nally time to consider a wetsuit, although the water is still quite warm. Let the boys at Beachbeat sort you out! Ha! Who would have thought f uoro colours would come back in! Wake me up! Where is my Bucks Fizz cassette? The next instalment of the ASP starts in Rio, and hopefully the Aussies can wrestle another title, although it is hard not to want Kelly to pull off a win – 42 and kicking serious arse! It is hard seeing anyone repeating his performance. Have a great weekend!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Maroochy Bar is returning tailor right on dusk with pillies best. It’s worth tossing a slug at dawn for better sizes than chopper tailor. Drifting over the yabby banks and bouncing plastic lures are working well for f athead and whiting. Mangrove jack and mud crabs are in the mangroves up in Eudlo and Petrie creeks. Catch cod and jew at the Maroochy motorway bridge pylons. SURF: Bream are moving in close to Alexandra Headland with mullet f llet the go. Find sand whiting in the last breaker along Maroochy Beach. Tailor and trevally are taking ‘poppers’ at Pincushion and sharks are joining in the hunt for bait. OFFSHORE: There are quality spanner crabs east of Murphy’s Reef. The close-in reefs and almost any rocky outcrop from Point Cartwright to Coolum are returning sweetlip, snapper, parrot and the odd mackerel with mullet f llet and pillies best bait. Snapper and pearl perch are at the Barwon Banks – this week’s new moon is the catalyst. FRESHWATER: Lake Macdonald is returning bass and cod on medium-diving lures trolled along the weed line in front of the scout’s camp. Red claw are plentiful at Somerset and Bjelke-Petersen dams. Boondooma is worth a visit for a weekend of golden perch and good-sized bass taking live shrimps and deep diver lures.
After you have made the move to Caloundra Rise you’ll wish you had done it earlier as the peace of mind it gives you frees you up to go and do all the things you have been waiting to do. Just a short distance to magnif cent beaches and picturesque hinterland. A community style living with regular events, classes and get togethers.
