he younger Pearson asks an awful lot of questions. A few recent classics include: “What does the government actually do, Mum?” (it’s a fair point); “Mum, is that person a man or a woman?” (she was a woman, and she did not like the question); and the unexpected, “Mum, why did God name his only son after a swear word?” (hmm…). It may merely be the curiosity of a six-year-old or it could be in the genes (as a journalist, I ask a few questions myself), and while sometimes his enquiries cause discomfort, I don’t want to discourage it. I mean, if you never ask, you never know, right? It’s a philosophy MWP is embracing this week, as we ask questions not just of the people who appear in our pages, but of you, our loyal readers. hile the Sunshine Coast’s location gives us an enviable lifestyle, we haven’t traditionally been known as a fashion-forward region. But thanks to a determined and talented group of designers, students and retailers, that is changing. To discover the health of an industry a good place to start is with those learning it, and the region’s TAFE is a hub of creative fashion energy. Amanda Knights teaches design and textiles at Sunshine Coast TAFE. Every year the organisation welcomes new students eager to make a mark in the industry. “Normally about 35 to 50 [students are] in the f rst year, and traditionally that drops off,” Knights says. Students can opt to tackle the 18-month diploma or the advanced diploma, which takes two years to complete. There is no typical student, Knights says, adding that there is a “big mix – some mature students, some with families, 15 is our youngest and we have a lady in her late 60s”. She says many mature students come for a change. “People who have maybe worked in another career, and this is something they have always wanted to do.” Whether it’s for pleasure or to build a serious

career, Knights says the students have quite a few opportunities to pursue after graduation. “We have a range of different options: some go on to sew for other people, or do the markets or wholesale. A student currently wholesales to different stores.” Knights adds there are those who go on to become “pattern makers or production assistants to big companies. Some go into visual merchandising. Or they go into retail.” While some students have to move away from the region to chase work, there is a local fashion industry that sustains workers and caters to customers. “It does f uctuate, there are a few businesses who have been around for a fair amount of time.” TAFE does have a relationship with these businesses and discusses its training package with them to ensure it is relevant to industry. “We have worked with Eumundi Markets a lot. There are a fair amount of small businesses [on the Coast]. We tailor our course to teach a broad range [of skills].” And it can be a challenging industry in which the skills – of both designer and retailer – are tested. from. Retailers therefore need to become more competitive. Offering products by up-andcoming designers set us apart from our competitors.” Hodgkins reminds local shoppers that there are a lot of reasons to stay on the Sunshine Coast rather than heading online or to Brisbane to buy fashion. “Spending money locally not only boosts the local economy, it allows local community members to achieve both their business and personal goals.” And Sunshine Plaza is helping those goals with a new initiative. Early this month it launched the Fashion Incubator, in collaboration with Sunshine Coast TAFE. The Fashion Incubator is an interactive pop-up clothing and accessories market that provides a platform for students of the Diploma in Applied Fashion Design and Technology course, to launch and grow their labels. On the f rst weekend of every month, Sunshine Plaza shoppers can check out and buy clothes by young design students and get advice from some of the region’s up-and-coming fashion stylists. ART PRIZE DRAWS 300 ARTISTS

rt is many things to many people. For some it’s about making political statements, for others it’s about expressing feelings or reproducing the beauty around us. Some create in 2D using anything from charcoal, pencils, ink, watercolour or oils and some mould materials such as clay, wood, stone and glass with their hands and tools to create 3D sculptures. The great thing about art is its diversity – and the Sunshine Coast has no shortage of great artists and excellent galleries spanning many genres. And with the Sunshine Coast Art Prize – one of the most prestigious art prizes in Australia – in its ninth year, the Coast is gaining a reputation as a serious contender in the art world. Nearly 300 entrants are vying for this year’s prize, which includes $15,000 and an artist residency at Maleny. For those who just want to appreciate some of the great talent out there, galleries are scattered along the length and breadth of the Coast. Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Programs portfolio chair Jenny McKay says the council is committed to promoting and enhancing the reputation of the Sunshine Coast as a vibrant,

Art & Soul on Duporth is a small art trail featuring the works of 13 Sunshine Coast artists. The 31-year-old has been 97 per cent blind since birth, and spent a day trialling a prototype app on Glass and had a glimpse of what was in front of her. Google’s head-mounted computer snaps a photo and a reads a description into her right ear. “It is a male bathroom”, a computerised voice tells her. Other times, “it is a $20 note”, “a bottle of skim milk”, or “a can of barbecue baked beans”. Glass is not yet on the market, but already Schulz’s employer, Telstra, is exploring its potential to hand people with disabilities a new measure of independence. “The potential is life-changing,” she says. A second prototype app draws on Google’s voicerecognition engine to transcribe spoken conversations in real time. Text is projected on the small screen that hovers above the right eye – like running subtitles for real life. AAP

Space fans pay sky-high prices for paraphernalia A Soviet-era space capsule that carried three cosmonauts into space in the 1970s fetched $1.5 million at auction last week. The capsule went to an unidentif ed European buyer. The historic piece dates back to the Soviet-US space race during the Cold War.

Two more recent space suits also went under the hammer. One worn by AngloAmerican astronaut Michael Foale to reach the international space station aboard a Soyuz in 2003 sold for just over $100,000. The other, used by cosmonaut Alexander Kalery for a f ight to the MIR station in AAP 1996, fetched $93,000.

There has been huge success by overseas players in this area, such as Zillow (US) and Zoopla (UK). The comparison between Onthehouse and Zillow is obvious. They have both formed their respective websites revolving around historical property sales data, valuation estimates and are seeking to monetise traff c through lead based revenue. Zillow has transformed into the dominant real estate site in America, with more listings than any other site, including rentals, for sales and foreclosures. The site now generates enough consumer interest that it is able to charge agents for page impressions. Onthehouse has had some success in generating display advertising revenue, but has yet to commercialise the site to a point where it can begin to charge for (or generate substantial) agent/ broker leads. OTH has had a wild ride from a share price perspective with a 52 week range between a low of 33 cents and a high of 88 cents. The time and cost to develop and integrate the key elements of the platform have been greater than the market expected. The market has become impatient given ongoing investment requirements. However, OTH still offers a solid investment proposition. We value the software business alone at $1.05 per share. There is also talk that it may be looked upon as a potential takeover target by the successful REA Group better known as realestate.com.au. OTH could be a stock offering investors a chance for some spectacular capital growth but not without a high level of risk. British museum is launching an ambitious online database to remember the lives of the millions of men and women who served in World War I. The Imperial War Museum hopes that the history project, timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of WWI, could form a permanent digital memorial to the scores of soldiers, nurses and others from Britain and the Commonwealth who contributed to the war by piecing together their life stories. The project’s website, launched on Monday, so far features records for 4.5 million people who served with Britain’s army overseas, pulled together from existing archives and family collections. But many of the entries contain only minimal details – just blank pages attached to names – and the museum is urging the public to get involved in rebuilding those stories. “Everybody can contribute to Lives of the First World War,

whether they choose to simply remember someone online, upload a picture from their family album, share a story passed down through generations, or connect off cial records to build a full and factual picture of what happened to that person throughout the war,” says Luke Smith, who heads the project. here’s a growing array of anti-ageing hair products in the beauty section of department stores. But what is caviar creme? Do you need it? And what about the ‘youth renewal rejuvenating’ elixir, or the ‘advanced’ scalp and hair concentrate? Maybe you need a ‘vitamin restore’ product with omega-3, keratin and protein? According to Carolyn Evans, a trichologist at Brisbane’s Absolique Hair Health Clinic, hair products are only short-term f xes, which can actually do long-term damage. Keratin, a protein found in hair, is the key ingredient of many anti-ageing hair products. It can make your hair look and feel good, but it’s not a long-lasting solution, Evans says. “Keratin is what hair is made of from the inside out and cannot be put back from the outside in,” she explains. The constant use of synthetic keratin, which coats your hair, can lead to a

loss of hair elasticity, which eventually causes breakage. Evans says one of the best ways to look after your hair is by eating well. “Without proper nutrition things go wrong in the body and this will always affect the hair,” she says. Foods that nourish the hair include eggs, beans, poultry and those rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and f axseeds. Dark green vegetables, which are strong sources of vitamins A and C, help follicles to produce sebum, the oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands, which helps prevent hair and skin from drying out. While diet is important, Evans says a wide range of other factors, including starting or stopping birth control pills, iron def ciency, thyroid imbalances, blood sugar f uctuations, pregnancy, stress, chemicals in cosmetic products, and menopause – among others AAP – can also affect the health of your hair.

cientists have proven what many have always known – yoga is good for pregnant women. Researchers have studied the effects of yoga and found it can reduce the risk of anxiety and depression in mums-to-be. The results of new research led one expert to suggest yoga should be provided on Britain’s National Health Service as a cheap way of preventing serious complications later. In a paper published last month in the journal Depression and Anxiety, academics from Newcastle and Manchester universities showed women who attended a yoga class every week for eight weeks experienced less anxiety compared with those who received normal antenatal treatment. Dr James Newham, a research associate at Newcastle University’s Institute of Health and Society, says, “It is surprising this has never been looked at before. We have long believed that [yoga] works but no research had been done to back up

the theory. We have now gone some way to prove that it can help. It was not a small effect either. This has the potential to really help mothers who are feeling anxious about their pregnancy.” Professor John Aplin, one of the senior investigators in Manchester, and himself a yoga teacher, says, “Many women opt to practise yoga during their pregnancy but this is the f rst worldwide report on the effects of both single and multiple sessions of antenatal yoga on mood. “The results conf rm what many who take part in yoga have suspected for a long time. There is also evidence yoga can reduce the need for pain relief during birth and the likelihood for delivery by emergency caesarean section.” AAP

oosa celebrity chef Matt Golinski is well known for his cooking presentations, but you won’t see him donning his chef whites when he takes to the stage this month. Instead, Golinski will be talking about the importance of healthy living and f tness when he features as a keynote speaker at the Sunshine Coast Healthy Lifestyle Expo. “I’ll be sharing with the audience about how staying mentally and

physically healthy has assisted in my recovery,” Golinski says. And it has been a long road to recovery for the popular chef, who received third-degree burns and lost his wife and three daughters in a house f re on Boxing Day 2011. “Eating well and exercising have been the main focus in my recovery, but Reiki and yoga have also played a part.” Indeed, Golinski’s f tness campaign has been well

documented. He has run in a variety of charity events and half marathons throughout his rehabilitation journey. Less documented, though, is his dedication to healthy eating. “I have always been a healthy eater,” he says. “With the amount of running and other exercise I do each week I’m very conscious of consuming lots of lean protein and limiting carbohydrates and fats.”

f Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey are looking for tips on how to turn around Australia’s stuttering economy, they could do worse than ask Mazda. The Japanese carmaker has completed a stunning turnaround in the past decade or so, going from near-bankruptcy in the late ’90s to become the motoring world’s most remarkable success story. That’s a crown the 3 is likely to reclaim in 2014, thanks to the arrival of its third-generation model with updated styling, improved performance and fuel-eff ciency and a welter of new technology. Mazda has been careful not to step too far away from the formula underpinning the car’s success, but this new version is unquestionably a better car all-round. The new 3 builds on its strengths while smoothing over some of its previous weaknesses. The so-called SkyActiv engine and transmission philosophy has been further ref ned, with Mazda claiming improved performance and “dramatic” fuel-eff ciency gains of up to 30 per cent over the previous model. For the f rst time, the 3 features Mazda’s eye-catching new Kodo design language, giving it a crisp and conf dent appearance while adding to the company’s reputation as a maker of aesthetically pleasing machines. The new 3 will be offered in sedan

and hatchback, with a choice of two petrol engines, manual and automatic transmissions and six trim levels. Pricing starts at just over $20,000 for the basic Neo model up to the reintroduced Astina nameplate at almost double that amount. We tested the second-tier Maxx hatchback – retailing at $22,490 in the six-speed manual format – plus a $1500 “safety” pack that adds blindspot monitoring, collision avoidance and a cross-traff c reversing system. For a car of this price, it impresses with pleasing quality and ref nement. Equipment levels have been enhanced to include HMI (Human Machine Interface) – a cutting-edge connectivity

system – plus a suite of safety inclusions known as iActivesense. One of the few criticisms levelled against the previous, record-selling Mazda3 was the intrusion of road noise. That’s been quelled in this latest model, which exhibits Benz-like levels of cabin quietness. It’s part of an overall driving experience that is impressive for a car in this class, rivalling the highend Euro brands for performance, ride and handling. The two-litre, four-cylinder power unit found in the Neo, Maxx and Touring variants has been ref ned and tweaked to deliver a useful and accessible 114 kilowatts, while achieving combined fuel-eff ciency of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres. The larger 2.5-litre four-cylinder found in the three higher-spec SP25 models uses marginally more fuel at six litres per 100 kilometres, while producing 25 more kilowatts. Mazda’s fuel-saving iStop system, which shuts down the engine when stopped at lights or in traff c, is standard across all models. The 3’s cabin follows a minimalist

but classy design. The seats are outstandingly comfortable. The chunky steering wheel is excellent in comfort and grip and has multi-function buttons adorning it – cruise control, telephone, audio volume and settings, trip computer scroll and voice control. By far the dominant element of the new 3’s cockpit is the Human Machine Interface and it’s a beauty. It’s a large, vivid screen atop the centre stack, accessed by a scroll-style mouse in the centre console. Mazda has done away completely with just about every other button in favour of this central screen system. Fortunately, it’s easily read and thoughtfully presented. While the upper part of the dash and door fascias are classy soft-touch materials, some of the hard, dark plastic of the lower dashboard feels less impressive. Still, we must remember weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re

talking about a $22,000 car. Our biggest issue was with the instrument panel, which seems like itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been shrunk to f t into a space visible through the steering wheel arch. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dominated by turret-style

speedo which looks small and poky, supplemented by a digital-style tacho on the left which is barely visible, and a similarly small trip computer on the right of the speedo. In higher-spec models, the tachometer dominates the single-dial format with a digital speed readout to the side, which seems like a much better arrangement. Still, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a minor complaint in an otherwise impressive interior layout. The new 3 is slightly larger than the previous model, offering more shoulder and legroom in the front but 10 millimetres less legroom in the rear. Mazda says the hollowing of the back of the front seats creates more knee-space for those in the back. The 3 has always been a rewarding car to drive and this latest model is no exception. The same well-sorted chassis, assured handling and forgiving ride characteristics remain, with some further ref nement. The two-litre SkyActiv powerplant

of our test machine was impressively smooth and delivered more than adequate response. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a f recracker â&#x20AC;&#x201C; youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to choose the more powerful SP25 to get that â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but most drivers will have few complaints. We tested the six-speed manual version, featuring a light and progressive clutch and beautifully smooth, tight gearshifts. Ratios are well-spread, too â&#x20AC;&#x201C; meaning the 3 feels perfectly comfortable in fourth gear at city speeds and very long-legged when cruising in sixth on the open road. The SkyActive dual-clutch automatic, which weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re yet to test, delivers even better fuel eff ciency than the manual. The basic Neo enjoys six airbags, a full suite of electronic safety aides, Bluetooth connectivity and keyless start. Adding the $1500 safety pack brings blind-spot monitoring, Smart City Braking (frontal collision avoidance) and a Rear Cross-Traff c Alert. Our Maxx (sitting secondbottom on the 3 range, just above the entry-level Neo) will set you back $22,490 plus onroads â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which feels

like excellent value for a car with this level of specif cation. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be perfectly placed to keep an eye on the road ahead, even though most of your competitors will continue to be behind you.

UP AND AWAY A Santa Fe real estate agent is taking marketing homes to new heights, along with new complications in US aviation laws.

And it was instrumental in getting the buyer to bite.” The United States Federal Aviation Administration has banned the use of drones for commercial purposes except in the cases of those with special permission from the agency. But a federal judge recently ruled that drones for commercial use don’t fall under FAA regulations. Tercero says he should be able to use the drone as a real estate agent if the home owner gives consent. So far, he says, the DJI Phantom, which is about half a metre across, has been used to show undeveloped land in northern New Mexico and for more high-end listings.

NEW US REAL ESTATE RECORD A sprawling waterfront estate in Greenwich on the US east coast has sold for $US120 million (about $130 million), setting a new American record. The sale of Copper Beech Farm, in the Connecticut town of Greenwich, was f nalised earlier this month after being on the market for almost a year. Real estate agent David Ogilvy told local newspaper Greenwich Time that the property, which is on 50 acres and boasts stunning Atlantic Ocean views, is the most expensive single-family home sold in the US. The 1250-square-metre main house, originally built in 1898 in French Renaissance style, has 12 bedrooms, nine bathrooms and 10 f replaces. It also boasts a library, a solarium, a wine cellar and a servant’s wing. Outside, the property also includes two islands, a tennis court, a swimming pool and a spa. AAP

It seems like unusual conditions for this time of year but hey, why stop the flow from the worst summer in memory for waves? So my advice is, crack out the golf clubs or collect some brownie points for future swells. So the next event on the ASP tour will be Fiji! Heading into Fiji, Kelly Slater now leads the tour! That’s not too shabby for a 42-year-old. Oh and he won in Fiji last year in amazing surf! God knows how they can beat last year’s event, but strap yourself in from June 1!

ESTUARY: Some nice-sized bream and flathead have been taken on plastics this week with the Cod Hole area and down to Chambers Island the perfect drift. Sea bream are moving over both Mooloolaba and Maroochy bars on the night high tides. Prawns and mullet gut are the best baits. SURF: It’s a great time of the year for beach anglers with bream, tailor and dart working into holes from Pincushion to Mudjimba with some gutters deeper than usual, so jew and sharks have moved in. Big baits are the go! OFFSHORE: Close-in reefs are firing for mixed reef fish, but snapper to five kilos are also working bait from Murphy’s to Currimundi. The top end of the Barwon Banks is also a hot spot with dawn and dusk best, using whole pillies, squid and large cooked prawns. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is a great impoundment for winter bass with kayaks and canoes able to work in close to weeded areas without spooking fish. Spinner baits and plastics work just as well as live shrimp.
