he younger Pearson asks an awful lot of questions. A few recent classics include: “What does the government actually do, Mum?” (it’s a fair point); “Mum, is that person a man or a woman?” (she was a woman, and she did not like the question); and the unexpected, “Mum, why did God name his only son after a swear word?” (hmm…). It may merely be the curiosity of a six-year-old or it could be in the genes (as a journalist, I ask a few questions myself), and while sometimes his enquiries cause discomfort, I don’t want to discourage it. I mean, if you never ask, you never know, right? It’s a philosophy MWP is embracing this week, as we ask questions not just of the people who appear in our pages, but of you, our loyal readers. I would encourage you to turn back to the previous page and check out our readership survey. We are turning the tables and getting you to tell us all about your likes and dislikes, in a bid to improve the magazine for you. Talking about self-improvement, this week we also discover a group of people determined to make the Coast a more sartorially sophisticated region. We are on the countdown to Ladies Oaks Day, so we thought it was time to get fashionable, and discover the new breed of fashion designers and retailers who are dressing the Coast. Discover more over the page. We also have four pages of Oaks Day attire in my style on page 32. If you haven’t chosen your outf t for the day, no doubt there is something here that will tempt you. Also this week we chat to chef Matt Golinski, ahead of his appearance at the Healthy Lifestyle Expo. Head to agenda on page 28 to f nd out more about this incredible man. Jemma Pearson

HOW THE COAST HAS BECOME AN INCUBATOR FOR NEW DESIGNERS. WORDS: JEMMA PEARSON

TAFE teacher Amanda Knights (far left) talks fashion design with Leanne Klein, Melody Neale, Kathryn Gough and Yasmin Bridges

W

hile the Sunshine Coast’s location gives us an enviable lifestyle, we haven’t traditionally been known as a fashion-forward region. But thanks to a determined and talented group of designers, students and retailers, that is changing. To discover the health of an industry a good place to start is with those learning it, and the region’s TAFE is a hub of creative fashion energy. Amanda Knights teaches design and textiles at Sunshine Coast TAFE. Every year the organisation welcomes new students eager to make a mark in the industry. “Normally about 35 to 50 [students are] in the f rst year, and traditionally that drops off,” Knights says. Students can opt to tackle the 18-month diploma or the advanced diploma, which takes two years to complete. There is no typical student, Knights says, adding that there is a “big mix – some mature students, some with families, 15 is our youngest and we have a lady in her late 60s”. She says many mature students come for a change. “People who have maybe worked in another career, and this is something they have always wanted to do.” Whether it’s for pleasure or to build a serious

career, Knights says the students have quite a few opportunities to pursue after graduation. “We have a range of different options: some go on to sew for other people, or do the markets or wholesale. A student currently wholesales to different stores.” Knights adds there are those who go on to become “pattern makers or production assistants to big companies. Some go into visual merchandising. Or they go into retail.” While some students have to move away from the region to chase work, there is a local fashion industry that sustains workers and caters to customers. “It does f uctuate, there are a few businesses who have been around for a fair amount of time.” TAFE does have a relationship with these businesses and discusses its training package with them to ensure it is relevant to industry. “We have worked with Eumundi Markets a lot. There are a fair amount of small businesses [on the Coast]. We tailor our course to teach a broad range [of skills].” And it can be a challenging industry in which the skills – of both designer and retailer – are tested. Sunshine Plaza marketing manager Sarah Hodgkins tells MWP, “With the introduction of online shopping, people now have more options to select M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

from. Retailers therefore need to become more competitive. Offering products by up-andcoming designers set us apart from our competitors.” Hodgkins reminds local shoppers that there are a lot of reasons to stay on the Sunshine Coast rather than heading online or to Brisbane to buy fashion. “Spending money locally not only boosts the local economy, it allows local community members to achieve both their business and personal goals.” And Sunshine Plaza is helping those goals with a new initiative. Early this month it launched the Fashion Incubator, in collaboration with Sunshine Coast TAFE. The Fashion Incubator is an interactive pop-up clothing and accessories market that provides a platform for students of the Diploma in Applied Fashion Design and Technology course, to launch and grow their labels. On the f rst weekend of every month, Sunshine Plaza shoppers can check out and buy clothes by young design students and get advice from some of the region’s up-and-coming fashion stylists. Hodgkins says, “We are very excited to launch the Fashion Incubator initiative. Sunshine Plaza

Here are Sunshine Plaza’s top 10 tricks for ensuring you are on-trend this season. Kate Moss showed how to work the androgynous look when she launched her latest Topshop collection in London last month

1.

Add some embellishment. This season we are encouraged to add sparkle and bling to make your ensemble shine.

6.

Don your most-dapper blazer and suit pants, and rock the androgynous look this season. It’s all about clean, lean lines and tight tailoring.

2.

The mono movement is returning this season. And it’s okay to opt for all white or all grey.

7.

Just like leather, denim is a tried-andtrue trans-seasonal trend, so think carefully about your jean pieces.

3.

No sure about leather? It’s time to embrace it. Forget the standard biker and choose leather-panelled blazers, midi skirts in faux leather or a statement leather boot.

8.

Couple pastels with brights across the spectrum. Elongate legs in pink or nude pumps.

9.

Stay under the quilt with a range of quilted fabrics. Many stores have embraced this feel-good trend, so it won’t be hard to f nd a piece you love.

4.

5.

The weather is now cool enough for a very on-trend bomber jacket. Pair with a skirt for feminine f air or team with a wedged sneaker. Join the navy – black’s more colourful sister is the talk of the town this season and it’s complementary to all skin tones and less harsh than black.

10. Show off your fashion prowess with

clever layering. Opt for lightweight basics and layer scarves. Don’t be afraid to splash out on that coat, trench or thick woollen jumper, then remove layers throughout the day.

One of the biggest fashion-related events on the Coast is Ladies Oaks Day, which is on again at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club on May 30. This year’s event is supporting the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, so race goers are encouraged to wear a splash of red. Not sure what to wear? DEALING WITH QUEENSLAND'S ACCUMULATED DEBT PROBLEMS THE STRONG CHOICES WE ALL MAKE TODAY HAVE A CRITICAL IMPACT ON THE FUTURE FUNDING OF VITAL PROJECTS RIGHT ACROSS THE STATE. WE ALL WANT OUR QUEENSLAND ECONOMY TO GROW STRONGER.

New schools, new hospitals, new roads, bridges and highways, together with new rail lines – these are all being planned for construction across Queensland. But to turn these plans into reality we first have to deal with the accumulated debt of the past ten years. An $80 billion debt with an interest bill of $4 billion every year.

TEN YEARS OF GROWING DEBT = $80 BILLION OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS QUEENSLAND’S DEBT HAS GROWN FROM $15.7 BILLION IN 2004-05 TO $80.4 BILLION IN THE 2015-16 YEAR

To fix Queensland’s debt and interest problems, strong choices have to be made; we can either significantly increase taxes, reduce services, or sell or lease some assets.

$4 BILLION INTEREST BILL EVERY YEAR = FEWER SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS, ROADS. We are currently paying an interest bill of $4 billion a year. In one year, $4 billion could build 25 new schools, redevelop and expand a 300-bed regional hospital and construct almost 900km of highway.

ART PRIZE DRAWS 300 ARTISTS

A

rt is many things to many people. For some it’s about making political statements, for others it’s about expressing feelings or reproducing the beauty around us. Some create in 2D using anything from charcoal, pencils, ink, watercolour or oils and some mould materials such as clay, wood, stone and glass with their hands and tools to create 3D sculptures. The great thing about art is its diversity – and the Sunshine Coast has no shortage of great artists and excellent galleries spanning many genres. And with the Sunshine Coast Art Prize – one of the most prestigious art prizes in Australia – in its ninth year, the Coast is gaining a reputation as a serious contender in the art world. Nearly 300 entrants are vying for this year’s prize, which includes $15,000 and an artist residency at Maleny. For those who just want to appreciate some of the great talent out there, galleries are scattered along the length and breadth of the Coast. Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Programs portfolio chair Jenny McKay says the council is committed to promoting and enhancing the reputation of the Sunshine Coast as a vibrant,

creative and artistic region. “The Sunshine Coast has an exciting and diverse creative industry which enriches the character and identity of each of its local communities,” McKay says. “The arts scene on the Sunshine Coast is very much alive and well thanks to the amazing pool of creative practitioners working across a range of mediums. “There is a strong link between the arts and tourism industries

The arts scene on the Sunshine Coast is very much alive and well thanks to the amazing pool of creative practitioners which attracts visitors to the region. “A great example of this is the beautiful hinterland towns of Maleny and Montville and all the way to Kenilworth, who boast a selection of galleries, home studios and art centres for all to enjoy.” This year the Sunshine Coast Art Prize includes the inaugural New Media category, with prizes valued at $15,000. The category is open to any emerging artist aged 15 to 30 years,

in the f rst f ve years of their practice and residing in the Sunshine Coast local government area. Entries close on June 9, with an application fee of $20 for any new media artwork such as a digital projection, moving image, still digital image or photograph, soundscape or new media installation. Ten f nalists will be chosen to be exhibited at Caloundra Regional Gallery in February 2015.

Sunshine Coast Art Prize The Sunshine Coast Art Prize is in its ninth year. The prize, which includes $15,000 and an artist residency at Arley Farm at Maleny, attracts work from some of Australia’s best contemporary and emerging artists working in a two dimensional medium. The award culminates in an exhibition of the 40 f nalists at Caloundra Regional Gallery from August 27 to October 26.

Art and Soul on Duporth A diverse group of artists has come together to showcase their work in a unique exhibition aimed at raising their profiles and supporting local businesses. Art & Soul on Duporth is a small art trail featuring the works of 13 Sunshine Coast artists. The event is organised by Michael Torchia, part-time artist and owner of Arnica Waterfront Restaurant at Maroochydore, who loves the diversity of artistic talent on the Coast. “But there doesn’t seem to be a great way of actually putting it together or making it available to be viewed or appreciated, Torchia says.

^ Current exhibition at Caloundra Regional Gallery: MYTHO-POETIC Archive of Country (detail)

Not as Happy as you used to be? Is Stress, Anxiety, Depression or Insomnia overwhelming you?

The majority of artworks are displayed at Art Central, a vacant shop on Duporth Avenue, with the rest featured in a number of shops and restaurants. The diverse range of artwork includes chainsaw art, street art, pottery, oils and watercolour paintings and photography. “Each artist is very different, which I like – it’s just great. They are a mix of professional artists and hobbyists. The trail is marked with highly visible f ags displayed outside participating venues along Duporth Avenue and will culminate in an exhibition and lunch celebration at Arnica Waterfront Restaurant on the afternoon of May 24. The featured works will be available for sale at the exhibition with prices ranging from $100 to $3000. For more information or to book tickets to the exhibition lunch email artandsoulonduporth@ gmail.com.

Do you f nd yourself irritated, not able to feel excited, or constantly thinking negatively? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time where you can hear your heart beating while your head is on the pillow?

though studies are available showing its impact on the brain. It can be passed on from person to person very easily, and so more than one person in a household may be suffering from similar symptoms and both may be affected.

One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them. The cause has been found in the gut and seems to be widespread throughout the community. It is a malicious infection mainly picked up from travelling overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is often only detected in specialised testing. This infection has been shown to release a neuronal toxin, affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It has not often been associated with mental health conditions even

Often, sufferers are able to correlate the f rst sign of symptoms, coinciding with a trip overseas where they experienced a tummy bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. Australia is so close to the Indonesian countries it can be transmitted from, and Australians travel there often for their holidays, so imagine the amount of people coming back who could be infected and how it can be passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work. Fortunately it is quite easy to address, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. I have seen patients who have suffered depression for four decades, and after treatment for one month have improved out of sight. Other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment. Bacterial infections are just one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating depression, anxiety or ADHD. We have successfully treated hundreds of patients within months of beginning treatment. These are not conditions with unknown cause like many believe, and can be resolved quickly.

IMAGE UPGRADE FOR ALEX STREETSCAPE

I

f you are wondering about the construction work along Alexandra Parade, it is part of the council’s $3.5 million Alexandra Headland Streetscape Project. The ongoing project aims to make the area safer, more functional and more visually appealing. Councillor Chris Thompson says it will result in signif cant

improvements to pedestrian, cyclist and motorist safety and accessibility as well as making the nearby foreshore area more attractive. “This is an exciting project for Alexandra Headland because it will upgrade an important piece of community infrastructure by improving pedestrian and cyclist connections to the park, skate bowl,

foreshore and beach areas as well as providing a dedicated pathway for access to the north and south, Thompson says. Improvements will include: • Better pedestrian and cyclist linkages across Alexandra Parade. • Wider footpaths, shade trees, street furniture, street lighting, better disability compliance and a planted median strip. • Relocation of vehicle entrances

to Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club to improve safety for motorists. • New traff c signals and pedestrian crossing functions at the Mari Street intersection. • Upgrading existing bus and coach stops. • Improved electrical and stormwater network. The project will be constructed in stages and is expected to be f nished in November.

Ladies, it’s time to frock up. Sunshine Coast Turf Club is celebrating the 10th annual Ladies Oaks Day and the Morayfield Shopping Centre Fashions on the Field is expected to be a highlight. But gents don’t feel left out – there’s a category just for you. The event is fast approaching and now is the time to start planning your outf t. Fashion on the Field judge Dianna Mullins has some tips to help you out. “Remember that it’s winter racing carnival, not summer,” Mullins says. She’s adamant that headwear and hosiery are must-have items for the ladies – and a headband or a f ower in your hair won’t cut it if you want to be in the running to win. For those on a tight budget, a bit of creativity can turn an existing head piece into something very classy. And it is all about class ladies and gentlemen. “If you’d wear it to a nightclub,

Weekly read > If you are a money-lover, the Billfold is a site to get excited about. This site is not aimed at those looking to get their personal f nances in line. Instead, its authors claim it is a site about life and how money impacts on people – positively and negatively. It covers a variety of subjects all related to money, from how to negotiate speaking fees to the price of mangoes in New York and the value of using a middle initial. The Billfold comes under the umbrella of The Awl. You can read the Billfold at thebillfold.com. ebillfold.com.

Bits and Bytes >> Glass With four short words – “OK glass what’s this?” – Kelly Shulz’s world becomes a whole lot brighter. The 31-year-old has been 97 per cent blind since birth, and spent a day trialling a prototype app on Glass and had a glimpse of what was in front of her. Google’s head-mounted computer snaps a photo and a reads a description into her right ear. “It is a male bathroom”, a computerised voice tells her. Other times, “it is a $20 note”, “a bottle of skim milk”, or “a can of barbecue baked beans”. Glass is not yet on the market, but already Schulz’s employer, Telstra, is exploring its potential to hand people with disabilities a new measure of independence. “The potential is life-changing,” she says. A second prototype app draws on Google’s voicerecognition engine to transcribe spoken conversations in real time. Text is projected on the small screen that hovers above the right eye – like running subtitles for real life. AAP

Space fans pay sky-high prices for paraphernalia A Soviet-era space capsule that carried three cosmonauts into space in the 1970s fetched $1.5 million at auction last week. The capsule went to an unidentif ed European buyer. The historic piece dates back to the Soviet-US space race during the Cold War.

Two more recent space suits also went under the hammer. One worn by AngloAmerican astronaut Michael Foale to reach the international space station aboard a Soyuz in 2003 sold for just over $100,000. The other, used by cosmonaut Alexander Kalery for a f ight to the MIR station in AAP 1996, fetched $93,000.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY AWARDS

ueensland businesses who have contributed to the state’s cultural diversity have the opportunity to be recognised by the Premier’s Cultural Diversity Awards 2014. Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes is encouraging businesses to nominate for the awards. “Our culture and lifestyle is made all the more vibrant by the contribution of migrants who’ve chosen to call Queensland home,” Elmes says. “Whether you know of a business that prioritises cultural diversity in the workplace or an active community volunteer, I encourage people to nominate for these prestigious awards. “This is an opportunity to not only acknowledge the inspiring

work done by many across our state to assist newly arrived Queenslanders, but also those who have supported the values of cultural diversity within the wider community. “These awards celebrate achievements that promote the growth and development of strong culturally diverse communities across Queensland.” There are 13 categories in this year’s awards, including Small Business (fewer than 20 employees), Business (20 or more employees) and Entrepreneur. This year the business category has been split into three to recognise the contributions of big and small businesses and culturally diverse entrepreneurs to Queensland. Nominations will close on Monday June 16. Information on the awards and application process is at: datsima.qld. gov.au/culturaldiversity.

Onthehouse Holdings is a company with an unusual name coupled with a bold vision. OTH f rst listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 2011 with a plan to aggregate the fragmented real estate industry data to provide compelling products and services to real estate related businesses and consumers. Headquartered in Brisbane, OTH has two main parts to its business model. The f rst is the consumer online division, which provides a platform of publicly available real estate websites underpinned by onthehouse. com.au, offering free access to an extensive database of real estate content and property values on most properties in Australia. for real estate agents in the form of an integrated platform for off ce administration, property sales, online advertising solutions and other business performance tools. There has been huge success by overseas players in this area, such as Zillow (US) and Zoopla (UK). The comparison between Onthehouse and Zillow is obvious. They have both formed their respective websites revolving around historical property sales data, valuation estimates and are seeking to monetise traff c through lead based revenue. Zillow has transformed into the dominant real estate site in America, with more listings than any other site, including rentals, for sales and foreclosures. The site now generates enough consumer interest that it is able to charge agents for page impressions. Onthehouse has had some success in generating display advertising revenue, but has yet to commercialise the site to a point where it can begin to charge for (or generate substantial) agent/ broker leads. OTH has had a wild ride from a share price perspective with a 52 week range between a low of 33 cents and a high of 88 cents. The time and cost to develop and integrate the key elements of the platform have been greater than the market expected. The market has become impatient given ongoing investment requirements. However, OTH still offers a solid investment proposition. We value the software business alone at $1.05 per share. There is also talk that it may be looked upon as a potential takeover target by the successful REA Group better known as realestate.com.au. OTH could be a stock offering investors a chance for some spectacular capital growth but not without a high level of risk. SHARE YOUR WAR STORIES

A

British museum is launching an ambitious online database to remember the lives of the millions of men and women who served in World War I. The Imperial War Museum hopes that the history project, timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of WWI, could form a permanent digital memorial to the scores of soldiers, nurses and others from Britain and the Commonwealth who contributed to the war by piecing together their life stories. The project’s website, launched on Monday, so far features records for 4.5 million people who served with Britain’s army overseas, pulled together from existing archives and family collections. But many of the entries contain only minimal details – just blank pages attached to names – and the museum is urging the public to get involved in rebuilding those stories. “Everybody can contribute to Lives of the First World War,

whether they choose to simply remember someone online, upload a picture from their family album, share a story passed down through generations, or connect off cial records to build a full and factual picture of what happened to that person throughout the war,” says Luke Smith, who heads the project. In practice, the website would be a crowd-sourced database that resembles a cross between Facebook and Wikipedia, encouraging users to share images and stories. The museum says it is aiming to add millions more records over the next months to include people who served with forces from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India and conscientious objectors and home front workers. here’s a growing array of anti-ageing hair products in the beauty section of department stores. But what is caviar creme? Do you need it? And what about the ‘youth renewal rejuvenating’ elixir, or the ‘advanced’ scalp and hair concentrate? Maybe you need a ‘vitamin restore’ product with omega-3, keratin and protein? According to Carolyn Evans, a trichologist at Brisbane’s Absolique Hair Health Clinic, hair products are only short-term f xes, which can actually do long-term damage. Keratin, a protein found in hair, is the key ingredient of many anti-ageing hair products. It can make your hair look and feel good, but it’s not a long-lasting solution, Evans says. “Keratin is what hair is made of from the inside out and cannot be put back from the outside in,” she explains. The constant use of synthetic keratin, which coats your hair, can lead to a

loss of hair elasticity, which eventually causes breakage. Evans says one of the best ways to look after your hair is by eating well. “Without proper nutrition things go wrong in the body and this will always affect the hair,” she says. Foods that nourish the hair include eggs, beans, poultry and those rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and f axseeds. Dark green vegetables, which are strong sources of vitamins A and C, help follicles to produce sebum, the oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands, which helps prevent hair and skin from drying out. While diet is important, Evans says a wide range of other factors, including starting or stopping birth control pills, iron def ciency, thyroid imbalances, blood sugar f uctuations, pregnancy, stress, chemicals in cosmetic products, and menopause – among others AAP – can also affect the health of your hair.

Happy beat Playing music or engaging in other artistic pastimes gives people a mental and physical boost, according to an Australian study. People who enjoy participating in or watching artistic activities as part of everyday life tend to feel happy and less stressed, says researcher Christina Davies, a PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia. Her study, published in the journal BMJ Open, is the f rst to look at the link between general population health and arts engagement. AAP

cientists have proven what many have always known – yoga is good for pregnant women. Researchers have studied the effects of yoga and found it can reduce the risk of anxiety and depression in mums-to-be. The results of new research led one expert to suggest yoga should be provided on Britain’s National Health Service as a cheap way of preventing serious complications later. In a paper published last month in the journal Depression and Anxiety, academics from Newcastle and Manchester universities showed women who attended a yoga class every week for eight weeks experienced less anxiety compared with those who received normal antenatal treatment. Dr James Newham, a research associate at Newcastle University’s Institute of Health and Society, says, “It is surprising this has never been looked at before. We have long believed that [yoga] works but no research had been done to back up

the theory. We have now gone some way to prove that it can help. It was not a small effect either. This has the potential to really help mothers who are feeling anxious about their pregnancy.” Professor John Aplin, one of the senior investigators in Manchester, and himself a yoga teacher, says, “Many women opt to practise yoga during their pregnancy but this is the f rst worldwide report on the effects of both single and multiple sessions of antenatal yoga on mood. “The results conf rm what many who take part in yoga have suspected for a long time. There is also evidence yoga can reduce the need for pain relief during birth and the likelihood for delivery by emergency caesarean section.” AAP

oosa celebrity chef Matt Golinski is well known for his cooking presentations, but you won’t see him donning his chef whites when he takes to the stage this month. Instead, Golinski will be talking about the importance of healthy living and f tness when he features as a keynote speaker at the Sunshine Coast Healthy Lifestyle Expo. “I’ll be sharing with the audience about how staying mentally and

physically healthy has assisted in my recovery,” Golinski says. And it has been a long road to recovery for the popular chef, who received third-degree burns and lost his wife and three daughters in a house f re on Boxing Day 2011. “Eating well and exercising have been the main focus in my recovery, but Reiki and yoga have also played a part.” Indeed, Golinski’s f tness campaign has been well

documented. He has run in a variety of charity events and half marathons throughout his rehabilitation journey. Less documented, though, is his dedication to healthy eating. “I have always been a healthy eater,” he says. “With the amount of running and other exercise I do each week I’m very conscious of consuming lots of lean protein and limiting carbohydrates and fats.”

Golinski, who draws his inspiration from “anyone who faces a challenge with their chin up” has had more than his fair share of challenges to overcome. “Setting goals and achieving them has been a huge part of my recovery, both mentally and physically – from learning to walk again to tackling half marathons – goals have kept me focused,” he says. The popular chef, whose positive attitude to life and

his handling of adversity have inspired a nation, is looking forward to a bright future. He still needs a few more operations but says otherwise, he is well on the way to recovery. “Professionally, I have plenty of projects lined up for 2015. My priority is to be 100 per cent well physically before I start them. “This year my schedule is full of writing about food, developing recipes for various businesses as well as appearing at food festivals and conducting public speaking engagements.” And he is happy to share his message of healthy living with anyone interested in improving their own lives. “Being healthy is very important to me,” he tells MWP. “Sharing knowledge is always a good thing. My talk might inspire others to live a healthier lifestyle also.” His advice to others: “never be afraid to reach out for help in times of need”. More than 100 exhibitors will take part in the Healthy Lifestyle Expo on Saturday May 24. Golinski will be on the main stage at 10am.

Admission: Single day $18 adults (children under 15 free), $12 concession; full weekend ticket $27 adult, $18 concession. For more information and a list of exhibitors and events visit: thehealthylifestyleexpo.com.

Keynote speakers Chef Matt Golinski Golinski will share his inspirational story and his journey of recovery. Dr Elen Ap Thomas Ap Thomas is a general practitioner and the founding doctor of The Medical Sanctuary, a multi-disciplined integrative medical practice. Dr Bel Zoughi Zoughi is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners on the Sunshine Coast and has been practicing medicine for more than 40 years. Her goal is to give patients the power to take control of their own health. Mark Darwin Darwin retired as a millionaire at the age of 33 after a highly successful entrepreneurial career. Kean Buckley Buckley focuses particularly on highlighting our connection or lack of connection with what matters to you, in your daily life. He teaches by

personal demonstration and by osmosis, to show how we can attract more of what matters to us, by becoming more of who we really are. Dr Alvin De Leon De Leon is a chiropractor and bodytalk practitioner from Canada. He will be talking about German New Medicine. Jean Sheehan Sheehan is author of the Millennium Modality and principal of Millennium Education and Absolute Empowerment. Dr Avi Ratnanesan Ratnanesan began his career as a medical doctor and ventured into biopharmaceuticals before moving into filmmaking and becoming a digital entrepreneur. Shé D’Montford D’Montford is a teacher, healer, author and promoter, and is rated as one of Australia’s top psychics.

CAKE: BIRTHDAY OR CELEBRATION COMING UP?

M US T T RY DO R EA D SEE

Pop into the Pastry Chef at Alexandra Headland for a cake that’s ready to take home and eat. The range includes chocolate ganache mud cake (pictured), black forest, chocolate mousse, chocolate butter cream torte, hummingbird torte, carrot cake, baked New York cheese cake. All varieties come in six to eight serves or larger ones by order.

2. Fresh and dried chillies to spice up your dishes.

3. Galangal (similar to ginger but sweeter and less pungent).

4. Lemongrass. 5. Coconut milk and cream (Conroy recommends using more coconut cream than coconut milk, as the cream lends itself to a fuller flavour). If you have these in your pantry but aren’t sure what to do with them, book a one-on-one cooking class with Conroy at amytisgardens.com.au.

St ylisttips Traditionally, Ladies Oaks Day is part of the winter racing carnival, which means summer frocks and slinky nightclub outfits are out of place at this event. Lace and leather trims feature in fashion at the moment but again, it needs to be appropriate for the track so aim for stylish rather than sexy. Choose felt hats and heavier headpieces rather than a fascinator. Aim for knee-length hems, and grab some gloves and hosiery for a winning look.

Taking motoring fun to the Maxx WORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP

f Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey are looking for tips on how to turn around Australia’s stuttering economy, they could do worse than ask Mazda. The Japanese carmaker has completed a stunning turnaround in the past decade or so, going from near-bankruptcy in the late ’90s to become the motoring world’s most remarkable success story. Mazda recently announced the biggest prof t in its 94-year history – almost $2 billion – after a year featuring global sales of more than 1.3 million vehicles. That turnaround has largely come about since the launch a of the Mazda3 – the seminal small car that has been at the vanguard of the company’s dramatic resurgence. Almost four million Mazda3s have been sold since then – about 10 per

[ cent of those here, where the model has been the nation’s best-selling vehicle for two of the past three years. That’s a crown the 3 is likely to reclaim in 2014, thanks to the arrival of its third-generation model with updated styling, improved performance and fuel-eff ciency and a welter of new technology. Mazda has been careful not to step too far away from the formula underpinning the car’s success, but this new version is unquestionably a better car all-round. The new 3 builds on its strengths while smoothing over some of its previous weaknesses. The so-called SkyActiv engine and transmission philosophy has been further ref ned, with Mazda claiming improved performance and “dramatic” fuel-eff ciency gains of up to 30 per cent over the previous model. For the f rst time, the 3 features Mazda’s eye-catching new Kodo design language, giving it a crisp and conf dent appearance while adding to the company’s reputation as a maker of aesthetically pleasing machines. The new 3 will be offered in sedan

and hatchback, with a choice of two petrol engines, manual and automatic transmissions and six trim levels. Pricing starts at just over $20,000 for the basic Neo model up to the reintroduced Astina nameplate at almost double that amount. We tested the second-tier Maxx hatchback – retailing at $22,490 in the six-speed manual format – plus a $1500 “safety” pack that adds blindspot monitoring, collision avoidance and a cross-traff c reversing system. For a car of this price, it impresses with pleasing quality and ref nement. Equipment levels have been enhanced to include HMI (Human Machine Interface) – a cutting-edge connectivity

system – plus a suite of safety inclusions known as iActivesense. One of the few criticisms levelled against the previous, record-selling Mazda3 was the intrusion of road noise. That’s been quelled in this latest model, which exhibits Benz-like levels of cabin quietness. It’s part of an overall driving experience that is impressive for a car in this class, rivalling the highend Euro brands for performance, ride and handling. The two-litre, four-cylinder power unit found in the Neo, Maxx and Touring variants has been ref ned and tweaked to deliver a useful and accessible 114 kilowatts, while achieving combined fuel-eff ciency of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres. The larger 2.5-litre four-cylinder found in the three higher-spec SP25 models uses marginally more fuel at six litres per 100 kilometres, while producing 25 more kilowatts. Mazda’s fuel-saving iStop system, which shuts down the engine when stopped at lights or in traff c, is standard across all models. The 3’s cabin follows a minimalist

M O T O R I N G

but classy design. The seats are outstandingly comfortable. The chunky steering wheel is excellent in comfort and grip and has multi-function buttons adorning it – cruise control, telephone, audio volume and settings, trip computer scroll and voice control. By far the dominant element of the new 3’s cockpit is the Human Machine Interface and it’s a beauty. It’s a large, vivid screen atop the centre stack, accessed by a scroll-style mouse in the centre console. Mazda has done away completely with just about every other button in favour of this central screen system. Fortunately, it’s easily read and thoughtfully presented. The system integrates with mobile devices to provide full address-book access as continued over>

<from previous page well as audio streaming and includes internet music sources. We had a couple of bugbears, though. While the upper part of the dash and door fascias are classy soft-touch materials, some of the hard, dark plastic of the lower dashboard feels less impressive. Still, we must remember we’re

talking about a $22,000 car. Our biggest issue was with the instrument panel, which seems like it’s been shrunk to f t into a space visible through the steering wheel arch. It’s dominated by turret-style

speedo which looks small and poky, supplemented by a digital-style tacho on the left which is barely visible, and a similarly small trip computer on the right of the speedo. In higher-spec models, the tachometer dominates the single-dial format with a digital speed readout to the side, which seems like a much better arrangement. Still, it’s a minor complaint in an otherwise impressive interior layout. The new 3 is slightly larger than the previous model, offering more shoulder and legroom in the front but 10 millimetres less legroom in the rear. Mazda says the hollowing of the back of the front seats creates more knee-space for those in the back. The 3 has always been a rewarding car to drive and this latest model is no exception. The same well-sorted chassis, assured handling and forgiving ride characteristics remain, with some further ref nement. The two-litre SkyActiv powerplant

of our test machine was impressively smooth and delivered more than adequate response. It’s not a f recracker – you’ll need to choose the more powerful SP25 to get that – but most drivers will have few complaints. We tested the six-speed manual version, featuring a light and progressive clutch and beautifully smooth, tight gearshifts. Ratios are well-spread, too – meaning the 3 feels perfectly comfortable in fourth gear at city speeds and very long-legged when cruising in sixth on the open road. The SkyActive dual-clutch automatic, which we’re yet to test, delivers even better fuel eff ciency than the manual. The basic Neo enjoys six airbags, a full suite of electronic safety aides, Bluetooth connectivity and keyless start. Adding the $1500 safety pack brings blind-spot monitoring, Smart City Braking (frontal collision avoidance) and a Rear Cross-Traff c Alert. NEWS & VIEWS

UP AND AWAY A Santa Fe real estate agent is taking marketing homes to new heights, along with new complications in US aviation laws.

B

rian Tercero has been using a drone to help advertise homes on the market and says video footage from a drone can better convey the appeal of a property than standard marketing photos of trees. “Flying over adds a whole other dimension. It’s powerful. And it was instrumental in getting the buyer to bite.” The United States Federal Aviation Administration has banned the use of drones for commercial purposes except in the cases of those with special permission from the agency. But a federal judge recently ruled that drones for commercial use don’t fall under FAA regulations. Tercero says he should be able to use the drone as a real estate agent if the home owner gives consent. So far, he says, the DJI Phantom, which is about half a metre across, has been used to show undeveloped land in northern New Mexico and for more high-end listings.

Flying over adds a whole other dimension. It’s powerful. And it was instrumental in getting the buyer to bite

“This just makes so much sense for out-of-state and out-of-country clients,” he says. But what has become the latest trend in the real estate industry has privacy advocates concerned. They say a drone that hovers over properties with a highresolution camera could potentially record people’s private movements. AAP

NEW US REAL ESTATE RECORD A sprawling waterfront estate in Greenwich on the US east coast has sold for $US120 million (about $130 million), setting a new American record. The sale of Copper Beech Farm, in the Connecticut town of Greenwich, was f nalised earlier this month after being on the market for almost a year. Real estate agent David Ogilvy told local newspaper Greenwich Time that the property, which is on 50 acres and boasts stunning Atlantic Ocean views, is the most expensive single-family home sold in the US. The 1250-square-metre main house, originally built in 1898 in French Renaissance style, has 12 bedrooms, nine bathrooms and 10 f replaces. It also boasts a library, a solarium, a wine cellar and a servant’s wing. Outside, the property also includes two islands, a tennis court, a swimming pool and a spa. AAP

ARIES (March 21-April 20) You’ll feel pulled in many opposing directions, as multiple responsibilities (and people) compete for your attention. Thursday’s full moon spells the end of spontaneous spending sprees, as you realise you have to make a little money go a very long way.

TAURUS (April 21-May 21) Taureans are fabulous flirters and this week, with the full moon stimulating your relationship zone (and Venus hooking up with Uranus) it’s time to give those charisma muscles a workout as you radiate your sensual charms far and wide.

GEMINI (May 22-June 21) This week, as action planet Mars trines Mercury (your ruler) it’s time to finish long-standing projects and tie up loose ends. Friday’s fabulous aspects also help you replace outdated aspirations with dazzling updated dreams. Out with the old, and in with the new!

CANCER (June 22-July 23) With Jupiter journeying through your sign (until July 16) and Venus/Uranus shaking up your life direction, don’t play it too safe crabs. It’s time to experiment, explore, enthuse and engage. But expect some ongoing tension between work commitments.

LEO (July 24-Aug 23) It’s not the ideal week to host a jolly family reunion or bring up sensitive old issues. The full moon falls in your home zone, so be on domestic drama alert and choose your words carefully, as loved ones are liable to make mountains out of molehills.

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Villa Virgo is usually a place where efficiency reigns, routine is revered, and surprises are unwelcome. This week (courtesy of the full moon and Mercury) you’ll find that life’s complicated, relationships are unpredictable, and the rules are constantly changing.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) Have you been shopping when you should be saving? If the answer is ‘yes’, then there could be some dramas this week. With Venus and Uranus linking up in your romance zone on Friday, some lucky Librans will throw caution to the wind and fall in love at first sight.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) Thursday’s full moon and Venus/ Pluto square magnify your possessive steak and stubborn side, but try not to get into super intense mode. Turn off your motor and cool your heels, otherwise you risk Scorpio burn-out. It’s time to lay down arms and build bridges with loved ones.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) This week’s stars stir up your sense of humour. Just make sure your gags and one-liners don’t offend others, and that your jokes are ones that everyone can enjoy. Attached archers – it’s time to patch up partnership problems as you take a deep breath and talk things through.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) You function best when others behave in predictable, sensible ways. Which is hardly ever – and certainly not on a full moon! But the more you slip into Capricorn control-freak mode, the more problems you’ll have. Encouraging words will get you a lot further than criticism.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Your unpredictable ways will be very predictable this week. Rebellious? Eccentric? Impulsive in love? Pushing everyone’s buttons for your own personal amusement? A big yes to all the above, as you channel your unique talents and express yourself to the max.

PISCES (Feb 20-March 20) With Thursday’s full moon activating your adventure and travel zone, it’s time to channel the intrepid explorer within as you plan a weekend escape, a heavenly holiday or an overseas getaway – somewhere you’ve never been before.

4-DAY FORECAST

The devil wind decides to visit us again. ESE winds are predicted for Saturday, turning south-east on Sunday. Maybe Rainbow or Noosa would be worth a check. It seems like unusual conditions for this time of year but hey, why stop the flow from the worst summer in memory for waves? So my advice is, crack out the golf clubs or collect some brownie points for future swells. So the next event on the ASP tour will be Fiji! Heading into Fiji, Kelly Slater now leads the tour! That’s not too shabby for a 42-year-old. Oh and he won in Fiji last year in amazing surf! God knows how they can beat last year’s event, but strap yourself in from June 1!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Some nice-sized bream and flathead have been taken on plastics this week with the Cod Hole area and down to Chambers Island the perfect drift. Sea bream are moving over both Mooloolaba and Maroochy bars on the night high tides. Prawns and mullet gut are the best baits. SURF: It’s a great time of the year for beach anglers with bream, tailor and dart working into holes from Pincushion to Mudjimba with some gutters deeper than usual, so jew and sharks have moved in. Big baits are the go! OFFSHORE: Close-in reefs are firing for mixed reef fish, but snapper to five kilos are also working bait from Murphy’s to Currimundi. The top end of the Barwon Banks is also a hot spot with dawn and dusk best, using whole pillies, squid and large cooked prawns. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is a great impoundment for winter bass with kayaks and canoes able to work in close to weeded areas without spooking fish. Spinner baits and plastics work just as well as live shrimp.
