rawing crowds and stopping traff c, or being ignored and playing for a pittance – the life of a busker is one of extremes. For this week’s cover story, MWP’s Leigh Robshaw has been roaming the streets of the Sunshine Coast and checking out some local buskers. She gets a behind-the-scenes look at what it is to be a street performer on the Sunshine Coast. Leigh discovers that good days mean happy crowds and plenty of gold in the guitar case, but it’s not always an easy way to spend a day. Some of our local buskers are talented kids earning good pocket money, others do it in the hopes of kick-starting a career, while some have made a living from a life of playing at markets and along main streets. So get your loose change ready to turn the page and f nd out more. If you have notes as well as change in your pocket, head over to our home style pages for some bits and pieces for the house (that starts on page 26) or head over to page 23 for three pages of local fashion. ‘Buy and hold’ is the classic property investment adage, but sometimes you also need to sell. So, when do you know it’s time to let go? Head over to My Property Preview on page 39 for an expert’s opinion, as well as plenty of listings for those ready to buy. If you’re in the market for a new set of wheels, we have you covered too – there are six pages of motoring starting on page 33. Finally this week the MWP family is saying goodbye to an old friend. Jarna Baudinette, a My Property Preview original, is moving on to a new career. The MWP off ce just won’t be the same. We miss you already Banana! Jemma Pearson

Life would be boring without buskers to animate our streets. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw MAIN IMAGE: DidgEra

im and Sam Aitken have had all sorts of things thrown into their guitar case, including international money, phone numbers from admiring girls and a condom. Dave Johnson has been paid with beer and a gold bracelet, while Adam Leggo has found chocolate bars, f owers and marijuana. It’s all in a day’s work for these Sunshine Coast buskers who love nothing more than taking their music to the streets, where on a good day, they can rake in the big bucks and on a bad day, struggle to make enough for a cold drink. It’s not the easiest way to earn a crust, but the rewards are many. Fifteen-year-old Tim Aitken and his brother, 12-year-old Sam, have been busking on the Coast and elsewhere for two-and-a-half years under their band name, Hoo8Hoo. With Tim on guitar and Sam on cajon, the boys have saved money for their f rst cars and university fees, as well as fundraising for various charities. “They’re big on raising money for kids,” says dad Tony Aitken, who is also a musician. “They raised $1700 for little Finn [Smith], who had meningococcal and $3000 for little Lucy [Riddout], who went to the US for an operation.” The Pelican Waters brothers are best known for their beautiful harmonies. They won the youth section of Caloundra Music Festival’s busking competition three years in a row (Tim won in 2011 by himself and the pair won as the Hoo8Hoo duo in 2012 and 2013) and they’ve recorded three songs with Paul Greene in Sydney with the goal of completing an album. They have busking permits for the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast and Byron Bay and will

soon hit Brisbane. Their favourite local pitches are Bulcock Street Markets at Caloundra, Eumundi Markets and Mooloolaba Esplanade and Tony says when they f rst started busking, could make anywhere from $600 to $1000 a day. “They certainly had the cute factor when they were younger,” Aitken says. “We used to put it all in the bank for them but as they get older they realise what they can buy with the money. Every now and then, we go on a spending spree to make it more exciting, otherwise it’s no fun for them to busk. “Funnily enough, they tend not to worry so much about the money side of things. They really just like the appreciation of what it is they’re doing. There’s always that hope they’ll get discovered.”

At the other end of the spectrum, Dave Johnson of Pomona has made a career of busking. The multi-instrumentalist creates a jazzy world music sound with myriad instruments including slide didgeridoo, saxophones, percussion, keyboards, guitar, marimbas and Native American f ute. Under his band name DidgEra, he has recorded four CDs, which he sells at his busking gigs at markets, festivals and in the streets along the east coast of Australia and in Europe, where he’s had fans argue with police to allow him to continue playing. One of his best busking memories is playing to massive crowds at Pf asterspektakel in Austria, one of the world’s largest street art festivals. “I occasionally do private gigs and get up on stage, but I prefer being at the same level as people,”

Johnson says. “I feel a better connection with the audience and I notice a huge difference with crowd interaction.” He cites his years of busking, which he f rst tried out at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, as the vehicle through which he developed his unique, earth-groove sound. “The feedback and ideas you get interacting with the crowd … I don’t know any other way of being able to tune in so well,” Johnson says. “At a gig you have the whole pressure of being up on a stage. When you’re busking, there’s less pressure. You can relax. There’s more freedom in playing.” Johnson believes Australian audiences are more reserved than Europeans when it comes to showing their appreciation for buskers, “They might have taken it in just as much as a crowd in Europe, but they don’t let you know quite so obviously, so you’re left wondering.” He says it’s possible to make a living out of busking if you have CDs to sell, but the work is often seasonal and you have to travel. It’s a great lifestyle, but the downsides include bad weather and the possibility of having his hard-earned money stolen while he’s playing, which happened once when someone pretended to put money in but instead, took it out. “It’s challenging when the whole energy of the day is down and heavy; if it’s really muggy and hot and the crowd is exhausted and you’ve got to try and keep the whole vibe up. Drunk people can be diff cult, too. They want to grab your instrument and try playing it.” Dave reckons the best place to busk in Australia is Circular Quay in Sydney, though it’s very territorial in the big smoke and there are strict rules and etiquette to follow. A world away from Circular Quay, Adam Leggo’s melodic f ngerstyle guitar resonates down Maple Street, Maleny. Store owners and shoppers don’t always appreciate a busker’s sound, especially if they’re subjected to it on a regular basis. But just about everyone – locals and tourists alike – loves the angelic, instrumental music Leggo plays from his repertoire of more than 200 songs. “People overwhelmingly enjoy it,” he says. “They say, ‘you create such a peaceful atmosphere’. When people are in their shopping mode, they

When people are in their shopping mode, they don’t think the day will bring that music and it’s a pleasant surprise for them. Music is enchanting to me and I love bringing that sense of colour and ambience to the main street of a place Adam Leggo’s angelic sound fills Maleny’s main street don’t think the day will bring that music and it’s a pleasant surprise for them. Music is enchanting to me and I love bringing that sense of colour and ambience to the main street of a place.” Leggo busks in Maleny or Caloundra three to four days a week and either does one set of four hours or two hours at lunchtime and two hours after school f nishes. Originally from Melbourne’s St Kilda, he says if he was busking in the city he could make $1000 a day, but it’s a different story in a small town like Maleny. “I’ll always do busking because I’m passionate about it and there are days when it pays but there are def nitely days when it doesn’t pay,” he says. “It’s very up and down.” Leggo has been busking since he was 15 and now at 34 with a wife and two kids, he’s focused on making a solid income by playing at weddings, functions, parties and funerals. While busking doesn’t always pay the bills, it’s certainly a good advertisement for Leggo’s talent. “I get all kinds of requests,” he says. “The other day, a guy came up and said, ‘it’s my anniversary, can you come down and surprise her and play a few songs?’

“When people come up and express praise, it’s a cliché, but it really does feed me. It’s usually older people and kids. People in their 30s, 40s and 50s are generally too busy – they seem to have less time not only in their day, but also in their minds.” Leggo says the enemies of a busker are motorbikes, wind and rain. It can also be lonely. “You have days where you’re out there playing and there’s just no response, the weather might not be particularly bright and you can feel really alone. About two out of every 10 days you’ll have a day like that, which will be a bit depressing. “But when you get the right conf uence of atmosphere, weather, the spirit of people in the street and your playing, when that all combines well, it’s so sweet.” continued over>

A BRIEF HISTORY OF BUSKING NG

The word ‘busk’ comes from the Spanish root word ‘buscar’, which means to seek. The term busking was f rst noted in the English language around the middle 1860s in Great Britain. Before that buskers were known as minstrels. Busking dates back to antiquity and is found across all cultures. Street performing was the f rst avenue for artists of any kind to earn a living before recording devices, video cameras, live venues, YouTube and The Voice made it possible for a performer to raise a public prof le in the blink of an eye. In 1530, King Henry VIII of England ordered that pardoners, fortune-tellers, fencers, minstrels and players must be licensed. If they did not obey this order, they could be whipped for two consecutive days. Licenses and permits are still required for busking in most major cities and regional areas around the world. New York City banned busking from 1935 to 1970 and still restricts it. Byron Bay’s famous

IS BUSKING LEGAL ON THE COAST?

Buskers and street performers require a permit to perform on public land on the Sunshine Coast. Permits are available for a variety of acts including circus performers, actors, musicians, dancers or demonstrations of creative arts such as painters, sculptors or writers. All of the 144 permits issued for street performance in the 2013/14 f nancial year are for local acts. The council has obtained public liability insurance cover for uninsured artists to a limit of $20 million for

approved permit holders at specif ed locations and times. There are a limited number of permits available under the council’s insurance policy. If the allocation is reached, artists can still apply for a permit provided they have their own public liability insurance. Those artists who wish to perform outside the designated locations and times must obtain their own public liability insurance. Currently there are 29 permit holders with their own insurance.

CELEBRITY BUSKING TRIVIA Don’t try this at home: the Space Cowboy sword-swallower, the Space Cowboy, was arrested and locked up for 22 hours in New York, leading him to post on his fan page that busking in New York “sux bigtime”. Cyberbusking is the newest form of busking, with artists and performers posting their work on the internet for people to download or stream in exchange for a donation.

• Classical violinist Joshua Bell, in a stunt organised by The Washington Post, played as an incognito street busker at a train station in Washington, DC on January 12, 2007. Of the 1097 people who passed by, only one recognised him and only a couple more were drawn to his music. For his 45-minute performance, Bell collected $32.17 (not counting $20 from the passerby who recognised him). He did this using a Stradivarius violin valued at around $2 million. • Famous artists who began their careers busking include Tracy Chapman, John Butler, Benjamin Franklin, Loreena McKennitt, Robin Williams and the Violent Femmes. • Artists who’ve tried their hand at busking after becoming famous include Jon Bon Jovi, Tom Jones, George Michael, Bruce Springsteen and – wearing disguises – Paul McCartney and Sting.

improved waiting times, with 3000 more endoscopic procedures per year since the opening of the new procedural suites.” Waiting list performance data published by the state government last month shows there is increased public hospital activity, capacity and performance on the Sunshine Coast. Health minister Lawrence Springborg says the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service is catering for increasing growth and patient demand, with an extra 110 public beds in the new Sunshine Coast University Public Hospital. “Since March 2012 there has been a state-wide surge in Emergency Department performance, ref ected on the Sunshine Coast, where the number of patients treated or

he Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service has welcomed the State Government’s $55.6 million budget increase. Professor Paul Thomas, chair of the SCHHS board, says the health service’s $695.5 million will expand services for the region. “Our ever-growing and ageing population means we need to use our budget allocation to expand both the range of services and capacity within the Sunshine Coast HHS,” Thomas says. “As we work towards the opening of the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital in 2016 we will further increase the range and capacity of services as part of the transition.

Public patients requiring intervention for cardiac conditions are now able to access the service locally, rather than having to be admitted to a Brisbane hospital Professor Paul Thomas “For example, over the last three years there has been a signif cant increase in the cardiology service provided to public patients within the Sunshine Coast HHS. “Public patients requiring intervention for cardiac conditions are now able to access the service locally, rather than having to be admitted to a Brisbane hospital. “A dedicated endoscopy procedural unit at Nambour General Hospital has also signif cantly

discharged within four hours has increased from 68 per cent to 76 per cent,” Springborg says. “In the last 12 months we have seen a dramatic decline in numbers of Sunshine Coast patients waiting two years of more on the general care waiting list for public dentistry – from 4085 to just 207.” Springborg says while there has been a temporary increase in local numbers of long-wait patients, the Sunshine Coast HHS board has given

assurance the consequences of increased access to the new infrastructure is temporary. “More than 4000 public medical and surgical patients have been referred to the new hospital since it opened its doors to public patients on December 2, with more than 1500 patients already having surgery at the hospital.” Thomas welcomed the increase in access to local services and says it will have a positive impact on the region’s health care. “This is an exciting time for the region as the Health Service prepares to meet the future needs of the Sunshine Coast community,” he says. In 2014-15, $369.8 million has been allocated to continue delivery of the $1.872 billion Sunshine Coast public University Hospital and its Skills, Academic and Research Centre, forecast for completion in 2016.

Bits and Bytes >> Drone dramas One of Kenya’s largest game reserves has been forced to halt plans to use drones to monitor its endangered rhinos because of a government ban, park officials say. Ol Pejeta Conservancy, home to four of the world’s last remaining seven northern white rhinos, says it had planned to launch the ‘aerial ranger’, equipped with a thermal imaging camera to track wildlife in real time, this month. But Kenyan authorities have banned the private use of drones, deeming them to be a security threat. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a 90,000-acre non-prof t private wildlife sanctuary in central Kenya, has been seeking ways to fend off well-funded and highly-equipped poachers. Last year, 50 rhinos were killed in Kenya by poachers. The idea to launch a pilotless drone program in Ol Pejeta was mooted a year ago and nearly $50,000 was raised via a crowd-funding platform. AAP

Fingerprints reveal date of crimes Criminals may find it harder to evade the law after Dutch forensic experts discovered how to accurately date fingerprints. The breakthrough could one day let police date crime scenes prints from years ago. “It’s not quite the Holy Grail of f ngerprinting, but it’s a very important discovery,” Marcel de Puit, f ngerprint researcher at the Dutch Forensic Institute, says, hailing what he claims is a world f rst. “Police regularly ask us if we can date crime scene f ngerprints,” he says, for instance a neighbour’s prints found at the scene of a burglary. “Being able to date the prints means you can determine when a potential suspect was at the crime scene or which f ngerprints are relevant for the investigation.” Fingerprints leave nearly unique marks on a surface that can be

copied and compared to a database to identify a suspect, a police technique that rose to prominence in the early 1900s. The prints themselves are made up of sweat and grease, including a complex mix of cholesterol, amino acids and proteins. “The chemicals in these f ngerprints can be analysed. “Some disappear over time and it’s the relative proportions of these chemicals that allow us to date a f ngerprint.” Previous attempts to crack the formula for dating f ngerprints failed because they focused on the amounts of chemicals, rather than their relative proportions. The new technique needs to be extensively tested on real crimes scenes, leading to the creation of a database, before it can be used in prosecutions, hopefully “within a year”, De Puit says. AAP

SPLITTING SUPER FOR MAXIMUM GAIN

Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

S

uperannuation contribution splitting has been available for some time as a strategy for couples to move super between members. Such a strategy involves some long-term planning and it is not possible to predict what legislative changes may take place that could affect current strategy decisions. Recent federal budget changes to the retirement age and the age pension highlight such a risk. The proposed change of raising the eligibility age for the age pension may lead to a higher number of people utilising a contributions splitting strategy that splits contributions to

[ 20 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J UN E 13, 2014

20.indd 1

the older member of a couple so that superannuation assets may be accessed earlier to fund retirement. Members of a super fund can currently split 85 per cent of the after tax effect of any concessional contributions (where a tax deduction has been claimed for the contribution) to their spouse. For example, assume a concessional contribution for $25,000 was made. After contributions tax of 15 per cent this leaves $21,250, which can be split to the spouse. Generally, only contributions made in the previous f nancial year may be split. You must ensure your super fund or SMSF trust deed allows for contributions splitting. There are a number of different reasons to split contributions. As noted above, the strategy of splitting to the older member of a couple may allow earlier access to super. Alternatively, some people may want to split to the younger member, allowing the younger person to leave their fund in accumulation mode.

Once the older person gains eligibility to the age pension, this would mean Centrelink would not assess that accumulation super for the younger person for purposes of the assets test. The older member would thus gain access to the age pension, when it may have been reduced or even eliminated by having the super balance assessed if in the older person’s name. Another reason to split might be to even up the balances of each member of a couple if there was concern about future changes to penalise those with larger superannuation balances. Super contribution splitting is a strategy worth considering for a variety of potential outcomes, but there are a number of conditions to consider. As always you should consult a f nancial adviser f rst. Mark Davidson is an authorised representative (no 427049) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. Small business unfairly burdened by tax compliance Tax compliance is costing Australia’s 1.7 million small to medium businesses $18.4 billion every year according to new research from the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia. “This is about 1.2 per cent of GDP and 14 per cent of total tax revenue collected by the Commonwealth,” says the Institute’s head of Tax Policy, Michael Croker. “We are recommending a range of tax changes, which would give a much-needed boost to Australia’s small businesses,” Croker says. In a submission to the Board of Taxation’s request for input on tax impediments facing small business, the Institute identif ed major tax changes that could be considered as part of the federal government’s promised White Paper on Tax Reform, as well as ideas that could be considered now. “Small businesses already enjoy a range of tax concessions, which are justif ed for a range of reasons,” he says. “The contributions that small

SALE ON BLINDS, SHUTTERS & AWNINGS

business makes to economic growth, competition and job creation are the most obvious reasons, and tax law also recognises the disadvantages of being small, particularly disproportionately high compliance costs. “Our latest tax research conf rms that business size remains the single most signif cant predictor of tax compliance costs. “The results indicated that the average gross tax compliance cost for small to medium businesses is about $11,000 per f rm per year.” The Institute’s submission said technology would be a key factor in lowering small business compliance costs.

After taking antidepressants for 20 years, she was shocked to find there was a cause for her depression that was never found. Within weeks she was excited, happy, motivated and amazed to get her life back. When she f rst began antidepressants, she felt a lack of interest in life, low mood, irritability, anger, anxiety and insomnia. Exhaustion then caused more anger and irritability. With a young family, the strain was too much, so she went to her GP and began antidepressants, which worked well, but needed to be maintained for a normal life. When I f rst saw her, she had responded to an ad about depression and was curious about coming off her antidepressants. After asking a few questions, and scanning her brain and body for inf ammation, infection, hormone and brain chemical levels, it was clear what the causes were. Nothing traumatic had happened during the time the depression began, she was relaxed and happy as she had returned from an overseas holiday. This always rings alarm bells, as there are bacteria in water overseas that can cause depression, so we organised a bowel test. We also found that when she was moody, it f uctuated, with bouts of sleepiness, and fogginess throughout the day. This usually indicates a relationship with food, as the

symptoms start between meals, f rst irritability and fogginess, then sleepiness, then back to normal. When food does not agree with you, it can cause depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia and low thyroid function. The liver detoxif es the offending food, by using enzymes which are also involved in making serotonin in the brain. This results in the brain under-functioning leading to low moods. One of these enzymes is responsible for producing melatonin for sleep, so insomnia follows. The thyroid drops in function during a food reaction. In women this will cause the progesterone to drop, which creates an oestrogen dominance problem leading to PMS, menopausal symptoms, and more hormonal imbalances including severe mood swings. We found with testing she had a few offending foods she was eating regularly, and when we received the results from her gut test found she also had a bacterial overgrowth affecting the brain. After treating these, starting a good diet, and raising serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine naturally, she was feeling amazing within weeks.

Depression and other mood disorders affect one in four Australians. It is not a disease that has unknown cause, like many believe, and can be resolved quickly. If you would like to know more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or view the webinar “7 Steps to Freedom from Anxiety & Depression” at www.advancedwellness.com.au. The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾

coming-of-age novels Want to encourage your teenager to read more? Start with these eight classics that every child – and adult – should read.

Looking For Alibrandi

This book by Australian Melina Marchetta became an instant classic when it was published in 1992. In it, Josephine Alibrandi searches for meaning in her teenage life and struggles with the stigma of being the illegitimate daughter of a single mother. As her self-awareness grows, she comes to understand there is more to her conventionobsessed grandmother than meets the eye.

My Brilliant Career

The semi-autobiographical tone of Miles Franklin’s f rst and best-loved novel, about Sybylla Melvyn, caused Franklin some angst when it was published. Sybylla, one of many children of a drunken father, goes to live with her grandmother before governessing. She falls in love but turns down marriage because she knows her restless desire to write won’t make her suitor happy.

When Sue Townsend died in April, there was an outpouring of love for her and her most famous creation. Mole’s diaries capture life in Thatcher-era Britain from the perspective of a spotty, wannabe poet living in a dysfunctional working-class family in the Midlands.

The Getting Of Wisdom

Henry Handel Richardson was the pseudonym for Australian writer Ethel Richardson. Her character, Laura Rambotham, exposes the diff culties of being a young, impoverished girl who doesn’t f t in at a boarding school where everyone else is far richer and more worldly. The book shows that even before Facebook, life for the teenager who doesn’t f t in has always been cruel.

On The Road

A staple of the Beat movement, Jack Kerouac’s semi-autobiographical account of road trips across the US is written in urgent, f owing prose, making it read like pure nonconformist escapism.

The Catcher In The Rye

For generations, JD Salinger’s Holden Caulf eld has struck a chord with every existentialist angst-ridden, rebellious teenager. Expelled from school, he heads to New York City and hires a prostitute but is ultimately stymied by overthinking everything, a la Hamlet. His very sweet, enduring love for little sister Phoebe keeps him going.

Cider With Rosie

One-hundred years after Laurie Lee’s birth, this book still poetically evokes life growing up in the idyllic pre-car Gloucestershire village of Slad soon after the First World War.

To Kill A

Mockingbird

This book by Harper Lee is about racial injustice in the Great Depression-era Deep South of America. But it is also about childhood innocence and growing up. Young Scout Finch narrates the tale of her lawyer father Atticus’s bravery in defending a black man wrongly accused of raping a white girl.

Four cars in one WORDS Peter Atkinson

J

ack of all trades, master of none. That’s usually what happens when you try to do too many things at once. It’s an adage Range Rover has successfully ignored for decades. The iconic British SUV, that practically invented the category in the 1970s, has always managed to be part luxury limo, part go-anywhere machine. And it has somehow always delivered on both fronts. The advent of the Range Rover Sport a few years back added a third string to its bow – that of sports car – with performance and handling that belied its 4WD heritage. Now this Jekyll and Hyde machine has a fourth identity – people mover. For the f rst time, the latest version of the Range Rover Sport can be had with the option of seven seats, giving it perhaps a broader range of capability than any other vehicle on the planet. Completely redesigned, this all-new Range Rover Sport is bigger yet lighter, faster yet more frugal, sportier on the tarmac yet more capable in the mud, more practical yet even more desirable than ever before. It truly is four cars in one. Perhaps that’s how they justify its equally impressive price tag, which tips $200-grand for the f agship

high-performance version we tested. Even if the Range Rover did just one or two tasks as well as it does, you’d probably be satisf ed. Instead, this latest Rangie Sport is almost arrogant in its excesses. Its performance is extraordinary for a machine standing so tall, so wide and so imposingly on the road. It will scamper to the speed limit in just over f ve seconds, which is quicker than many purebred sports machines. It crawls over rocks and mud and will wade through water almost a metre deep while keeping its occupants in the height of luxury – perched on plump leather seats with chilled air and concert-quality music piped into its bespoke

HONDA

cabin. And now it even extends that privilege to seven occupants. Talk about a bag of tricks. The Range Rover’s range doesn’t end there. It can be had with any of four engines – six-cylinder or eight-cylinder turbo-diesels or six-cylinder or eight-cylinder supercharged petrol. A diesel hybrid is also on the way, and the company is even contemplating a four-cylinder lightweight model. We drove the f agship supercharged f ve-litre V8 – known as the Autobiography Dynamic – whose engine punches out an impressive 375 kilowatts, driven through an eight-speed automatic and sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. continued over>

<from previous page As a luxury car, it delivers as much ref nement as any high-end European competitor, except, of course, that you have to climb a little higher to perch your posterior onto one of those beautifully upholstered seats. (It does have a button you can push to lower the air suspension for ease of entry, mind you.) That suspension system can be lowered by as much 50 millimetres, or jacked up by as much as 35 millimetres, giving the Sport a full 185 millimetres of variable ground clearance. That suspension, when tuned to ‘Dynamic’ mode, delivers astonishingly poised handling and

razor-sharp steering, making light of the car’s substantial bulk. That bulk, mind you, has been massively reduced by a weight-loss program that has stripped 420 kilograms from the previous Sport model. That, in turn, underpins its much-improved fuel eff ciency (down by 24 per cent in some models) and its spirited performance and handling (this car is almost one full second quicker in the 0-100km/h sprint). Those are quantum advances in anyone’s language. Unlike previous Sport models, this car is based on the underpinnings of its Range Rover Vogue sibling, rather than the Land Rover Discovery as was previously the case. However, Range Rover says up to 75 per cent of the Sport’s components are unique to this model. The car is also 63 millimetre longer than its predecessor, affording increased rear-seat knee room and those two ‘occasional’ fold-down rear seats. But because of shortened overhangs and wider stance, it appears more athletic and aerodynamic. Driver aids include lane departure warning, traff c sign recognition, automatic high-beam assist and, when heading off-road, a ‘wade sensing’ feature to tell you the depth of water you’re driving through. While unmistakably still cut from the familiar Range Rover cloth, it’s a thoroughly modern

expression of those traditional, squared-off lines. Massive wheels (up to 22 inches) add to its sporty appearance, which mirrors the futuristic design of its little brother Evoque. While lower-spec models miss out on a dual-range transfer case, both V8 models get the continued page 36>

<from page 34 company’s comprehensive suite of off-road settings, which range from rock-crawling to dynamic on-road modes. Suff ce to say, its off-road credentials are likely to outstrip the needs of all but the most adventurous owners. Around town, the Rangie’s sheer size can’t be completely disguised, although the makers argue it’s no longer, or less nimble, than a typical executive sedan. It’s thirsty in city traff c, though – we averaged 17.2L/100km for most of our week-long test. It’s on the open road this car is seen to best advantage. At the 100km/h speed limit the engine

is barely above idle at 1500rpm – it’s sipping fuel at a surprisingly frugal rate and, sitting high above the surrounding traff c, you feel as if you could easily drive for hours at a time. Range Rover even has a name for this – Command Driving Position – and it certainly emphasises the brand’s ‘above and beyond’ motto. Of course, that serenity can be shattered in an instant with a prod of your right foot. A whirr from the supercharger is followed in short order by the burble from the big tailpipes as the f ve-litre V8 goes to work. The vehicle’s claimed top speed is 225km/h and we have no reason to doubt that’s attained comfortably – in every sense of the word. The rear seats provide a spacious environment for heads, shoulders and knees and a sculpted bucket to perch your behind. Cargo space, as you’d expect from a vehicle of this size, is substantial and the electric rear hatch can be both opened and closed with the push of a button on the dash, key-fob or the hatch itself. The only drawback is that, by choosing the seven-seat model, you’ll have to forego the reassurance of spare wheel in the back. A can of tyre sealant will have to suff ce – f ne for city driving, not so convenient when you get off the beaten track. See, there’s some things even a Range Rover can’t do.

RANGE ROVER SPORT AUTOBIOGRAPHY DYNAMIC Details: Five-door, f ve- or seven-seat full-sized luxury 4WD with supercharged V8 engine, eightspeed automatic transmission and dual-range all-wheel-drive system. Tech stuff: 5-litre supercharged V8 engine produces 375kW at 6000-6500rpm, 625Nm at 2500-5500rpm; eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and sports mode, permanent all-wheel-drive with dual-range transfer case and selectable off-road modes. Features: Driver and passenger front, side, thorax and extended curtain airbags; dynamic stability control, roll control, electronic traction control with trailer stability assist; ABS with brake assist and brakeforce distribution; 8-inch touch-screen with satellite navigation and reversing camera; park assist, leather trim, electric seats, windows and mirrors, premium audio system with Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming; lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, traff c sign recognition, high beam assist, electric rear tailgate. Performance: 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds; top speed 225km/h. Thirst: 13.8L/100km (combined f gure). Verdict: Staggeringly capable, fabulous fun, seriously expensive. T

wo champion teammates, tied for the lead in one of the world’s most prestigious rally series, will try to break their deadlock in the International Rally of Queensland in the Coast hinterland next week. Jan Kopecky from the Czech Republic and Gaurav Gill of India will drive identical Skoda Fabia S2000 cars for the factory-backed

MRF team in round three of the FIA Asia Pacif c Championship. Each has scored a win and a second place from the f rst two rounds in New Zealand and New Caledonia, so with the inevitability that only one will lead after Queensland their rivalry is expected to be intense. it,” Kopecky said after his New Caledonia win last month. Gill has tackled the fast, tree-lined, forestry tracks around Imbil for the past six years, winning in 2010. In 2013, his consistency over six rounds earned him the championship ahead of his teammate – and Kopecky’s predecessor – Esapekka Lappi of Finland. The rally will be staged over two days on more than 240 kilometres of challenging gravel roads in the Mary Valley, after a colourful ceremonial start at Kings Beach on Friday June 20. It will also host the East Coast Bullbars Australian Rally Championship and Hankook Tyre Queensland Rally Championship.

WORD ON THE STREET

TACKLING OLD TYRES A new national program to tackle the growing problem of tyre disposal will be launched on July 1. Many of Australia’s leading tyre brands have joined the initiative, managed by Tyre Stewardship Australia, to address the issue and develop new technologies and products for the use of end-of-life tyres. The Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme will recognise and encourage sustainable end-of-life tyre management. Tyre Stewardship Australia chairman Gerry Morvell praised participants for their commitment to work together to make an impact on the signif cant challenge presented by sustainable tyre disposal that is facing Australia. “Over 48 million tyres [car tyre equivalent] are being added

to the waste stream each year,” Morvell says. “It is an issue that can only be addressed in a structured, transparent and well co-ordinated manner. Tyre Stewardship Australia creates the means to meet this challenge.” The Australian tyre recycling industry has contracted due to unsustainable tyre disposal practice. A two-fold increase in the volume of old tyres exported to less developed nations over the past seven years has also undermined investments and domestic recycling activity. The scheme has three core objectives: education of industry and consumers; research and development focussed on new uses for the recycled raw materials; and independent auditing designed to eradicate dirty, unsafe and illegal practices. It will be funded through a levy of 25 cents per new tyre sold in Australia.

Engine upgrades According to the rumour-mongers the British engineering company Cosworth will be offering engine upgrade kits for the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ sports car twins. The rumour was reported on carsales.com.au and the upgrade seems to be the result of a lack of power in the TMG 86s and STI BRZs. Pricing is yet to be conf rmed.

Mighty MINI The third generation MINI has f ve doors. It is the f rst time the British brand has been represented with a f ve-door model in the small-car segment. The new MINI 5 door has been launched with four model variants.

fuel consumption. It works in with Ford’s auto-stop/start system and regenerative braking so ancillaries will run while the engine is off and the vehicle stopped.

Mobile diagnostics Kia Motors has revealed details of its new mobile Global Diagnostics System (GDS-Mobile), which aims to improve the level of customer service. It is the third generation of Kia’s vehicle diagnostics system available to dealers and is the world’s f rst mobile-based total diagnostic solution, designed and optimised for use on mobile tablet devices. The new system will enable Kia’s vehicle technicians to more effectively identify faults.

Battery innovation Ford and Samsung SDI have joined forces to develop a new battery that combines lead-acid and lithium-ion technology. The company claims the dual battery system will reduce

5 SIGNS IT’S TIME TO SELL Expert buyer’s agent and author of Why Property Why Now, Josh Masters, shares his tips on when to sell. Learn more at joshmasters.com.au. making a few simple home improvements to maximise the sale value. The last thing you want is to have to put everything to market because you didn’t make the most out of your investments.

2. You want to completely exit the market lthough property is generally a long-term investment which will give you the best return after years of riding out growth cycles and market f uctuations, there are times when selling your property can be the best option to reach your investment or lifestyle goals. With years of industry experience as a buyer’s agent and having personally invested in property for more than 15 years, I’ve put together the f ve signs it’s time to sell in order to help guide your decision.

A

1. You’re financially over-committed While I usually live by the mantra of ‘never sell’, sometimes things can get a little tight and the best option may be to liquidate your assets. It’s important to remember that this doesn’t signify the end of the world. The f rst step is to identify the properties that will meet your f nancial commitments if you sell them. Then get to work

This is more common if you’re looking into retirement. At this stage of life, cash is king. No one wants to be left lugging a massive mortgage into their twilight years when you have no income to fund your debt. By the time you come to retirement you should be relatively debt-free, so if you’re still carrying a huge loan, now could be the time to get rid of it.

3. There’s greener grass elsewhere Trading one deal off for another can be a wise move, but only if you’ve taken into account all of the costs of ‘getting in’ and ‘getting out’. Remember, you’ll be up for selling costs and Capital Gains Tax if you’re moving out of property. And if you’re buying into another one, then Stamp Duty and Mortgage Insurance will def nitely put a dint into your payout.

4. It’s a dog – or a lemon! If you bought a lemon some time ago and have

been holding onto it in the hope it will start performing, it could be time to cut your losses. A property that is costing you money with excessive maintenance, bad tenants or low rent isn’t worth your time. Consider selling up and investing in something that’s more productive.

5. There’s an offer you can’t refuse In red-hot markets, people can get irrational and you may very well end up on the receiving end of this! If someone has offered you a price for your property that exceeds your wildest dreams, it may be time to sell up and take the win. However, bear in mind that sometimes things can be too good to be true, so make sure you secure the deal before making plans to spend the winnings. Also keep in mind that if you have to buy somewhere else and the market is red hot, the price may be just as strong elsewhere. The most important thing to remember is that selling your property is not always the best option. If it’s been a slow performer over the last year, it could just be part of the general ebb and f ow of a growth cycle. Don’t make rash decisions. Effectively navigating the property market requires time and patience.

Be close to nature at Bells Reach Stockland has launched another land release at its Bells Reach community to keep up with demand for home sites. Arbour at Bells Reach is a boutique precinct located off Bellvista Boulevard and surrounded by natural bushland. Home sites in the new Lime release start at $195,000 for a 310-square metre lot, with larger blocks up to 504 square metres. House and land packages are available from $339,500. Stockland Sunshine Coast regional manager, Ben Simpson, says home sites in the f rst stage were snapped up within weeks of being launched. “We are delighted with the interest in Arbour. The home sites have been very popular with a wide range of people, including f rsthome buyers, families and mature

couples, who love the ultimate lifestyle on offer,’’ he says. In keeping with a natural theme, Arbour at Bells Reach will have an 8500-square metre community park featuring raw materials inspired by the environment. The large park – which will be the third major park at Bells Reach – will have arbour structures, stylish seating and a landscaped playground and is expected to be completed before the end of the year. Last year, the Bells Reach Blue Park won Best Landscape Feature in the Landscape Queensland Construction Excellence Awards, while the Bower terrace style homes won the Affordable Housing category in the UDIA Queensland Awards for Excellence. ARIES [March 21-April 20] Friday’s full moon aspects put an extra bounce in your step and a glint in your eye, as you initiate projects with passion and enthusiasm. Be inspired by Judy Garland “Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.”

TAURUS [April 21-May 21] Issues involving your finances could come to a head over the coming week. If your money is tied up with someone else (either personally or professionally) then make sure you adopt a conservative approach and keep the lines of communication open.

GEMINI [May 22-June 21] Geminis are the grand masters of distraction, but avoiding responsibilities won’t work this week – it will only delay the inevitable. And with your ruling planet Mercury in retrograde mode until July 1, you need to apply the brain brakes and think carefully before you speak.

CANCER [June 22-July 23] This week’s stars shine a bright spotlight on power issues within a major relationship. You both need to cool down and compromise, otherwise the emotional tug-of-war will just continue. Sunday is super for group activities and creative joint ventures.

LEO [July 24-Aug 23] Lions can be very vain creatures. There’s nothing wrong with looking good, but don’t make it your main focus. Look deeper to find the real beauty within. Reflect on the wise words of Michael J. Fox “One of the things I’ve learned is that vanity is worthless.”

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Retrograde Mercury continues to regurgitate unresolved issues, and it will take patience and persistence to work your way through the long list. Friday’s full moon fires up your home zone, so it’s not the ideal time to get the long lost relatives together for a reunion.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] You have a strong desire to communicate via activities like teaching, public speaking or neighbourhood negotiations. But with Mercury retrograde and Venus opposing Saturn, don’t be dismayed if people misinterpret the message you are trying to convey.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] You’re set for a tricky week, as Venus opposes Saturn (in your sign) and Mars squares Pluto (your ruling planet). When it comes to relationships, expect anything from fiery confrontations to stony silences. Friday’s full moon magnifies money matters and self-esteem issues.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] With Friday’s full moon falling in your sign, your positive Sagittarian traits are amplified – and so are your negative ones. Attached archers – Saturn favours stability in relationships, as you focus on solving problems rather than running away. Singles – love and work are linked.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] In your desire to get ahead this week, you’re likely to arouse opposition. Try not to boss others around, as it will only make matters worse. Instead, try channelling your excess energy into regular physical exercise. Hiking suits your down-to-earth, disciplined style.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Ambitious Aquarius – do you fantasise about upsizing your lifestyle? Friday’s full moon stimulates your hopes and wishes zone – but make sure you have the cold, hard cash to finance your dreams. Small and sustainable is the sensible way to live.

PISCES [Feb 20-March 20] Have you been procrastinating? With this week’s full moon lighting up your work zone, you need to be bold and brave as you plan your future career path. If you have the confidence to listen to your intuition, you’ll be one step ahead of the professional pack.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

Localism, give me a break! I have been living on the Coast for more than 30 years and I am yet to hear a true local abuse anyone in the water, as common sense always wins over. This kind of verbal abuse normally comes from someone who has been here for a short period of time, so pull them into line. I heard of some recent behaviour coming from older people at Alex recently to other locals and it was disgraceful. Guys, if you hear someone having a go at others in the water, maybe have a quiet word, as it is uncool and certainly un-Australian to act like a wanker. I had this happen once at Cartwright. Funny part was I was surf ng with eight to 10 local friends, plus a bunch of clubby friends on skis and boards. Pretty embarrassing for the offender who left the water soon after. Anyway it’s uncool to have a go at others, so don’t be that person!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Flathead are taking live whiting and trolled lures form Cotton Tree to Twin Waters and around Bli Bli. Mud crabs and sand crabs are around Bli Bli Islands, but these will drop off as the colder weather sets in. Catch whiting on yabbies and cured worms at Picnic Point and the mouths of Eudlo and Petrie creeks. Trevally and estuary cod are at the Motorway Bridge on plastics. SURF: Teewah to Double Island Point is returning tailor at dusk using pillies and chrome weighted lures. Catch dart and whiting in the low-tide gutters with pippies and beach worms best. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, trag jew, snapper and pearl perch in the deeper water on the edge of the Barwon Banks with squid and whole pillies best. Caloundra Six Mile has parrot, sweetlip and squire on squid and cut baits. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam has plenty of bass, as do most freshwater rivers and lakes. Bass and saratoga are providing the only action on both lures and f ies in Borumba Dam near Imbil. The upper reaches of Coolum Creek has bass splashing insects, so surface lures are needed here.
