ge is a funny thing, isn’t it? I am 40, which – I am told by some helpful friends – makes me middle-aged. How thoroughly depressing – neither young and vibrant, nor old and interesting, ‘middle-aged’ sounds so uninspiring. No wonder many of my peers are buying inappropriate sports cars, investing in Botox or escaping overseas to ‘f nd themselves’. To my parents and grandmother, however, I am still a baby, a spring chicken, in the prime of my life. They look at me and still see a youthful woman – especially when they aren’t wearing their glasses. On the other end of the scale, to my son, and anyone born before 1999, I am old. I don’t understand Minecraft. I don’t listen to 5 Seconds of Summer. And I have never been on Snapchat. Speaking of Snapchat, do you know what it is? I work in the media, so I am pretty handy on the internet, I am comfortable around computers, and I try to keep up with what’s going on with technology. But even those among us who understand smartphones and the web, who are well connected (technically speaking) can be overwhelmed by this ever-moving beast. If you think an Apple is a fruit and Tinder is something you use to start a f re, head over the page for our technology basics cover story. This week we also have some other tech news, over on page 18, plus local news, travel (this week we are in Borneo), beauty news and more. Over in My Property Preview, we are offering tips for buyers who are in the market for an investment property. If you are thinking of expanding your portfolio, head over Jemma Pearson to page 36. Until next week!

What the tech? It’s a jungle out there, and if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the speed with which technology is moving, you are def nitely not alone. While even the most technologically minded among us are constantly surprised by new innovations, you don’t have to get left completely behind. So whether you know nothing about this strange world, enough to send an email, or you want to brush up on the basics, MWP is here to help.
Kelly Chambers from the Tertiary Preparation Pathways (TPP) program at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) helps us answer these questions. What’s the difference between the internet and the web, and does it really matter? “Often these terms are used interchangeably, but the short answer is that they are different and it is helpful to know why. A very basic answer is that the internet is the infrastructure on which the World Wide Web functions.”
as email accounts is no longer reliant on any one computer but is now available across devices and places as long as the device has internet connection.”
Mac versus PC? “I consider this a personal choice.” But to help you choose, Chambers recommends you head over to computer.howstuffworks.com and search for ‘10 Differences between macs and PCs’ for a really helpful online article on what separates the two. The differences are many in the way they look and run, and how the user interacts with them. Macs are made by only one company, Apple, while a number of companies manufacture PCs – this will explain the fact that Macs are usually more expensive. But the quality of the hardware and software is more reliable in a Mac.
What is the Cloud? “Cloud competing is a term associated with software and storage of data that is not stored on the local computer but is accessed over the web. [In the cloud] the data and the software to run specif c applications such [ 6 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J ULY 18, 2014

As we’ve become more sophisticated in the ways we use the web, we need to adjust how we use it, being able to tell fact from rumour you use the web. You need to protect yourself technically but also it is essential to become critical about the choices you make about the information you receive and the information you share. Some security tips can be found at ist.mit.edu/security/tips.”
Let’s talk safety. “There are many myths about safety issues using social media and technologies, however, it is reliant on two factors – the technical set-up of your device and a personal responsibility for how
What is an app? “An ‘app’ is a piece of software or an application, or it is otherwise known as a program, and this allows you to do certain tasks using your device (whether that’s your
computer, laptop, tablet, phone or smartwatch).” Chambers adds, “In TPP we teach Computer Literacy where we discuss the f ve web literacies to make you ‘Net Smart’ that have been developed by Howard Rheingold to explain ‘how to thrive online’. Rheingold suggests, ‘If you want to keep up with anything, it’s not about keeping up with technologies, it’s about keeping up with literacies’. “Technology shifts so fast no one ‘can keep up’ but what web literacies can do for you is to create a resilience that allows you to adapt to the technology that transforms the information into knowledge that is usable to people. The f ve literacies are: attention, participation, collaboration, ‘crap detection’ and network smarts. “Rheingold says, ‘As we’ve become more sophisticated in the ways we use the web, we need to adjust how we use it, being able to tell fact from rumour and able to call on the skills and resources of a community to help answer our questions’. It’s about empowering the users to be creators online and make a difference.” M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

Get on top of this year’s top f ve tech trends:
SOCIAL CLUB Facebook Facebook celebrated its 10th anniversary in February, and by now most of us are reasonably familiar with the platform, which allows you to create a social prof le and share photos, videos and status updates with ‘friends’. While Facebook makes it easy to stay in contact with others, it also makes it easy to reveal a lot of personal information without meaning to. Make sure your family’s prof le settings are adjusted so that only friends can see your information and posts; also ensure your kids don’t post their full name, date of birth or school or work details – this type of information makes them easy targets for internet fraudsters. Create your own Facebook prof le and have your children ‘friend’ you so you can keep track of their online activity.
Instagram Instagram is a popular photosharing app that allows users to edit and upload photos and comment on others’ pictures. If your child is using Instagram they are posting visual information – it
may be photos of themself or their friends, pets, or photos from inside your home. To ensure they are using the app safely make sure their posts are private and they have to approve followers (rather than automatically accepting them). If your child is interested in photography, art or visual media Instagram can be a great way to create a portfolio, but this should be private until they are old enough to manage their own privacy. Again, create your own Instagram account and make sure you are following your children so you can see what they are posting.
Snapchat Snapchat is a photo messaging app that allows users to take photos or short videos, add text or drawings and then send them to contacts. Once opened, the images or videos can be viewed for between one and 10 seconds (depending on the sender’s settings) before they disappear. Because of this impermanence many young people will send material via Snapchat that is not designed for public viewing. However, it is relatively easy for a recipient to take a screen

shot of the message, at which point your child loses control of it. Make sure your kids understand the risks of sending private information or images using technology, and how easily they can be passed on.
Tinder Tinder is a mobile matchmaking app that uses demographic information from Facebook to locate potential matches and display their photos. Once presented with a ‘match’ you can approve or dismiss it; if two users approve one another they can send text messages and photos. While Tinder allows young people aged 13 to 17 to use the service, and matches them only with people in the same age range, it is designed as a dating app and the rules can be abused. To ensure their online safety, if your child is aged under 18 they should not be using Tinder, or even have the app installed on their phone.
2. Smart stuff – home automation systems and smart appliances (fridges that tell you when you are low on milk and heating systems that sense when you are cold) will be all the go for home owners in the future. 3. Robotics – for play and education, manufacturers and innovators and producing a range of robotic toys. 4. Healthy helpers – such as French company 2IM’s smart pillbox, help improve health outcomes of patients. 5. Cars – auto makers are some of the world’s best innovators and cars are getting increasingly smarter and more connected.

It’s the walk with the stairs chiselled out of vertical cliffs and the 30-centimetre wooden platform attached to the cliff above a 2000-metre drop
A thirst for adventure Bec Bartlett took on one of the world’s most dangerous hikes in a whirlwind weekend. WORDS: Sam Walker
S
ome call it adventure, others call it outright crazy. Whatever your opinion there is no doubt a weekend trip to China to walk what is claimed to be the world’s most dangerous hiking trail is living life on the edge. While most of us spent a sunny weekend at the start of July enjoying the surf, having a coffee with friends, mowing lawns and doing housework, Bec Bartlett completed one of the craziest adventures of her actionpacked life – Hua Mountain. You might have seen pictures of it on YouTube – it’s the walk with the stairs chiselled out of vertical cliffs and the 30-centimetre ricketylooking wooden platform attached to the cliff above a 2000-metre drop. It’s not for the faint-hearted. Add to that, 20,000 stairs,
38-degree heat, 90 per cent humidity, one bottle of water between two people and no money and you’ve got a pretty extreme adventure. Bartlett, who owns the Domayne bedding franchise at the Maroochydore Homemaker Centre, did the hike with her close mate and adventure partner Justin Andrews, from Sydney. The pair f ew to China on Thursday July 3 and home again on Sunday July 6. It’s a weekend they won’t forget. “It was just an awesome experience,” Bartlett says. “To actually do it in a weekend was a thrilling experience as well.” She says the stress of f tting it all in, timing f ights and buses and taxis, navigating language barriers and the
small issue of running out of money just added to the experience. They ran out of money because they hadn’t realised there would be a hefty entrance fee to the park because it is a sacred place. “No one speaks English so we had a phrase book out trying to say ‘we don’t have enough money’,” she says. Because of their tight schedule they didn’t have time to go back to the city to get money. In an age-old gesture of good will that so many travellers have experienced, a Chinese businessman lent them money, which they paid back into his account the next day.
Water ref lls were nine times the price they expected so they did the hair-raising hike on one bottle. “We made it to the top just dying of thirst, I’ve never felt so thirsty,” she says. Only about 10 people were doing the hike while they were there and there was only one other westerner. And while the hike took them about nine and a half hours Bartlett says they still had time to enjoy the stunning scenery and the view from the top. It’s not the f rst action-adventure the 30-year-old has undertaken and it is not likely to be her last. She has already done two of the 20 trails on National Geographic’s Most Thrilling Trails list – one in South Africa and another in Hawaii – and she has plans to do a third in America in September. But while it sounds like she has been an adventure-seeker all her life, Bartlett says her thirst for the extreme started a few years ago because she wanted to overcome a fear of heights. Now she spends her spare time rock climbing and canyoning and pursuing extreme hiking trails. She admits many of her family and friends says she is crazy but not all. “A lot of people say we inspire them, because who goes to China for a weekend?”

he Maroochydore City Centre Priority Development Area has been approved by the State Government. Sunshine Coast Council mayor Mark Jamieson says the Maroochydore City Centre will be instrumental in building and strengthening the region. “This major development, which will be delivered over the next 25 years, will provide a mix of residential, commercial, retail, civic
and community uses to create a thriving and vibrant business district and city centre, complementing and enhancing Maroochydore’s existing business offering,” Jamieson says. “The project will deliver muchneeded infrastructure to the Sunshine Coast community and create signif cant opportunities for economic development and employment. “Development of the Maroochydore City Centre on

the current golf course site is undoubtedly one of the most exciting developments for the region. The golf course land was resumed by council in 2012, facilitating the start of detailed site planning. “Council fully appreciates the fact this is the only greenf eld CBD development in Australia and investment in the future business centre will set it apart from other locations across Australia.” Jamieson says the project has the potential to create thousands of jobs in the construction industry and will eventually house many businesses. Regional Projects Portfolio councillor Tim Dwyer says demolition works are expected to start on the site late this month and roadwork will start in 2015. “A major transport access will ultimately be created through to the new Maroochydore City Centre to service all of the Maroochydore business area,” Dwyer says.
The University of the Sunshine Coast took home its best-ever gold medal tally at last week’s Northern University Games. USC f nished f fth overall and claimed four gold medals in the games, which involved 11 universities from Queensland and northern NSW and more than 1650 athletes in 16 sports. Queensland University of Technology won the event, followed by Griff th University and Griff th University Gold Coast.

Achieving wealth objectives – stay focused

he strong performance of equity markets in the last f nancial year, and indeed the past three years, has some investors asking what could stop the run. Potential risks include economic shocks, over-valuation, f nancial instability, a jump in bond yields and geopolitical shocks, but our advice is to maintain a meaningful exposure to the market. Our bullish view on equities is based on a lacklustre return on cash (RBA governor Stevens indicated the local cash rate is likely to remain on hold for some time) and a reduction in market volatility. This means economic risk comes from a

signif cant fall in growth, which depresses earnings and raises recession risk, or from a rapid acceleration that forces central banks to raise interest rates. The huge fall in America’s f rst-quarter GDP is a strong reminder of the downside, but it was ignored by the market as a one-off episode as jobs and earnings data have been more buoyant. Reports on the second quarter are coming in better, but given steady downgrades to global growth in recent years, a fall in long-term growth is more likely than an imminent recession. Lower trend growth is ultimately not bullish for stocks, but paradoxically, is positive in the near term as it keeps monetary policy easy, bond yields low, and macro volatility suppressed. As to upside risk on the global economy, we accept that a sudden surge in growth is possible, but we downplay this risk as so much of the global growth disappointments
of recent years appears the result of deleveraging by banks, households and governments that does not seem over yet. This natural aftermath of
As to upside risk on the global economy, we accept a sudden surge in growth is possible, but we downplay this risk the f nancial crisis minimises the risk of a sudden and sustained growth surge. Can geopolitical shocks derail the stock rally? The main risk appears to be a widening Sunni-Shia civil war in the Middle East. We have no insight into this risk: we note little evidence of compromise but instead ample willingness to add fuel and resources to the f re. We should
assume that it is not going away quickly and requires protection against it, hence our preference to hold positions in energy stocks. As to valuation, we accept that higher investment markets and lower growth promise lower returns over the next f ve to 10 years. But that is true for all asset classes and surely for bonds and cash. We note that one of the main objectives of investing is to save for retirement. The lower the overall set of expected returns, the more investors will have to focus on higher-return assets to realise their future wealth objectives. We do not see overall lower asset returns inducing investors to lower their equity holdings, in fact, quite the contrary. Looking for a bit of adventure or an exotic wildlife experience? Maybe you are after white sand, turquoise waters and coral reef. Malaysian Borneo has it all. Try these to kick-start your Borneo trip.
Climb a mountain
Kota Kinabalu in Sabah on the Malaysian island of Borneo is home to the tallest peak in South-East Asia. It’s one of the easiest peaks in the world to conquer and doesn’t demand previous climbing experience, although it does take about two days to ascend and descend. Watching the sun rise from the summit is an incredible experience.
Dive with hammerhead sharks
Drop into crystal clear waters and be surrounded by hundreds of hammerhead sharks at Layang Layang, a resort island 300 kilometres off the north coast of Borneo. The clear waters have a visibility of up to 40 metres and pristine reefs. The island is actually an atoll of 13 linked coral reefs which drop down into sheer walls. As well as hammerheads you’ll also encounter turtles, giant clams, tuna, redtooth triggerf sh, pyramid butterf yf sh and unicorn f sh.
Hang with an orangutan
Sepilok, near Sandakan, is home to the famous orangutans. These beautiful, critically endangered creatures are native to Malaysia. The orangutan rehabilitation centre in Sabah occupies about 43 square kilometres of protected land at the edge of Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve. It is home to about 25 young orphaned orangutans, which are housed in nurseries, as well as those free in the reserve.
Explore the kinabatangan river
Many adventurous travellers head to Sabah to get their f x of wildlife. The Kinabatangan River is home to pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, orangutans, Sumatran rhinos and clouded leopards, along with countless rare birds such as the hornbill and the Oriental darter. Crocs can also be spotted lazing along the riverbank.
Watch baby turtles hatch
The elegant white beaches of Lankayan, a tiny island in the Sulu Sea, are the perfect place to unwind, swim and snorkel. But the island, about one and a half hours north of Sandakan by boat, is also a turtle-spotting destination with its own turtle hatchery. The green turtle and hawksbill

turtle make regular appearances as the new hatchlings are released to the sea between June and September.
GO BACK IN TIME
The Maliau Basin in Sabah is one of Malaysia’s f nest remaining wilderness spots. Bound by a formidable escarpment reaching more than 1675 metres above sea level, the basin encompasses more than 390 square kilometres of forest. The remote site is perfect for jungle walks and bird watching, while the highlight for visitors is trekking the seven-tier Maliau Falls.
See a ‘corpse f ower’
The Raff esia, the world’s largest f ower, thrives in altitudes between 500 and 700 metres in the forests of Borneo. This species has small, brownish, scale-like leaves and f owers that look and smell like rotting f esh and vary in size between a few centimetres to a metre in diameter. Buds take up to 10 months to develop and blossom for just a few days. SOURCE: TOURISM MALAYSIA & AAP

Tooth decay is the most common health problem in Australia, according to a group of organisations worried about the high consumption of sugary drinks. The organisations, which include Cancer Council Australia and the Heart Foundation, conducted research in Victoria that shows 12 per cent of adults drink sugary drinks every day. “Sugary drinks shouldn’t be part of a daily diet,” says Cancer Council Australia’s Craig Sinclair. “A 600ml soft drink contains about 16 teaspoons of sugar. This is a dangerous level of consumption that can lead to serious health issues.” AAP

Toyota’s top seller gets a little better WORDS Peter Atkinson
G
etting to the top is tough. Staying there is much, much tougher. Maintaining that dominance for years on end is virtually unheard of. St George won 11 straight premierships to be rugby league’s greatest team ever. Collingwood ruled from 1927 to 1930 to be the AFL’s best, while Roger Federer’s reign as the king of tennis stretched to 300 consecutive weeks – almost six years in the top spot. But none of them can hold a candle to the Toyota HiLux. It has held sway as Australia’s best-selling commercial vehicle for the past 16 years. Sixteen! Let’s put that into context. The last time the HiLux wasn’t Australia’s top-selling commercial, petrol cost 64 cents a litre, Mark Taylor was our national cricket captain and a little bloke called John Howard had recently been elected to run the country. People who weren’t born when that streak began are now old enough to drive one. For the past nine years, the HiLux has also worn the mantle of Australia’s best-selling four-wheel-drive – ahead of the army of offroaders and soft-roaders so popular these days. A dozen times, it has topped the Australian monthly sales charts for vehicles of any description. Earlier this year, Toyota sold its 800,000th continued page 32>

<from page 30 HiLux in Australia – more than 40 years after it sold its f rst back in 1971. It’s hard to imagine those records ever being beaten. Just extended. Because even after so long at the top, the HiLux continues to get better, thanks to some cosmetic tweaks, a new automatic transmission and upgraded safety rating as part of a mid-model refresh unveiled this year. We drove the HiLux in its most highly evolved and most expensive form – the range-topping SR5 diesel automatic. It’s not your typical tradies’ ute – you’re more likely to see an SR5 being driven by the foreman or the boss. Most workers will more likely be driving one of the 35 model variants now wearing a HiLux badge, from the entry-level $18,000 WorkMate right up to the $54,490 version we tested. It seems there’s a HiLux for just about any purpose and any price range.
There are three engine options, single and double cab, two-wheeland four-wheel-drive, ute and cab-chassis, plus a wide range of trim levels. If ever a vehicle was built to serve two masters, this is it. Work truck during the week, family fun machine on the weekends. The work side of things I’m not all that well-qualif ed to assess. For me, the arrival of a car like this in our driveway means little more than the chance to cart a few branches and unwanted items off to the dump. But clearly the tradies have voted with their feet on the HiLux. As a family on-and-off-roader, though, it certainly made an impression with us. It’s been a few years since we last drove a HiLux and it has become a more civilised, ref ned machine in that time. Although it still maintains that hard-working, utilitarian appeal, f nishes are prettier and smoother, and the overall cabin ambience much more comfortable.

In its latest form, the SR5 has picked up some handy new features – most importantly a f ve-star safety rating but also improved display and audio systems, upgraded interior trim and improved fuel-eff ciency. Toyota claims the new f ve-speed automatic on our test machine has trimmed more than six per cent from the HiLux’s thirst, which now averages 8.7L/100km. The SR5 can be had with a choice of two engines – a brawny four-litre petrol V6 or the four-cylinder,

three-litre diesel that we tested. Lower-spec models also get the option of a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol. The HiLux’s diesel surprised us with its relative smoothness and quiet operation, but that was about it, I’m afraid. In a market where punchy, fuel-eff cient diesels are the rule rather than the exception, the Toyota powerplant lags a bit behind. It’s a bit sluggish off the mark and never really rises to any great heights of performance. HiLux

[ drivers must be a patient bunch. At no point in the power band does it come close to matching the performance we’ve enjoyed in rivals such as the Mazda BT50, Ford Ranger or Volkswagen’s Amarok, despite its smaller engine. Even Holden’s Colorado impressed us more. On the positive side, it matches nicely with the f ve-speed auto, which has been upgraded in this latest model, to deliver smooth, linear progress. On the highway it seems happy enough, although overtaking requires a bit of premeditation. It delivers well enough on the score of fuel eff ciency, too – around town during the working week you can expect about 11L/100km; once the weekend arrives you’ll manage as good as 6.6L/100km on the open road. Combined average is 8.7L/100km, which puts it fairly mid-f eld in this category. Inside the SR5’s cockpit, the improvement in materials and f nishes is evident from the outset. Most impressive is the
Although it still maintains that utilitarian appeal, f nishes are prettier and smoother, and the overall cabin ambience much more comfortable 6.1-inch display screen –- home to the satellite navigation system (yes, on a HiLux) and reversing camera. Your iPod and iPhone can be connected via Bluetooth, with controls on the steering wheel. There’s also a ‘multi-information display’, which is an LED screen atop the centre stack which shows fuel economy, average speed, cruising range, outside temperature, a compass and clock. It’s all useful stuff for a go-anywhere machine such as this.
Okay, dials and switchgear in the HiLux remain functional rather than fancy, but it all seems to hang together nicely. Leather seats, big alloy wheels (up from 15-inch to 17-inch in the latest SR5) and a shiny alloy roll-bar in the back all add up to a smart, macho-looking machine. Handling and ride wise, the HiLux is a mixed bag. It turns assuredly and seems generally well-balanced during most changes of direction, belying its weight and ground clearance. However, vehicles built to carry substantial loads rarely deliver the most comfortable ride and the HiLux is no exception. On smooth surfaces it is f ne but when the road turns a bit choppy, so does the ride. On that score it probably trails some of its rivals. Where the HiLux never gives ground, of course, is in the reliability stakes and we’re prepared to bet this model is every bit as bulletproof as those that have come before it. After all, you don’t stay on top for 16 years for no good reason.

Location, location With the market strengthening, rental prices high and vacancy rates low, it’s a good time to pick up your f rst investment property or add to your portfolio. If you’re thinking of buying before the market takes off there’s an important question to answer – where?
Educate yourself
Rental properties located close to primary and high schools, daycare facilities and the University of the Sunshine Coast will always be in demand with families (if your property is within walking distance of one of these, even better). Look for properties within a two- to f ve-kilometre radius of primary and high schools. Remember, families and students will typically be looking for rentals in December or January, before the school or university year starts, so the second half of the year is a good time to get the ball rolling.
Be transported
The Coast isn’t renowned for its public transport, but take a look at the bus timetable in the area you’re looking to buy in, as not all tenants have cars. If the area is underserviced it may deter potential renters. Also, the Coast’s train line to Brisbane
means the smaller hinterland towns are popular with commuters – you may be able to pick up a more affordable home that will benef t from easy access to Brisbane, but make sure other amenities, such as shops and medical services, are still close by.
is walking distance from the beach will be a popular choice for tenants looking for work/life balance, and if you’re lucky to snag a property with ocean views you’ll be able to charge a little more rent. The same goes for river, lake views or even parkland views.
Shopping spree
Hear no evil
Most tenants want to be close to a supermarket or shopping centre, to cut down on travel time during the dreaded grocery run. Even the old-fashioned corner store can be a bonus, so keep this in mind when looking for an investment property. Proximity to cafes or restaurants and farmer’s markets can also be drawcards.
By the sea
The Sunshine Coast boasts some of Australia’s best beaches, and it makes sense that renters will want to live near them. A property that
Most renters want a quiet, peaceful home where they can relax privately. A property on a busy main road may not be the best choice (unless that location offers other perks such as easy access to transport). Try dropping by the street at different times to get a feel for the level of noise or disruption. If you are buying a unit, think about how many direct neighbours there are and how well the home is sound-proofed.
Healthy choices
Given the Coast’s beautiful climate many people enjoy exercising
outdoors. As a result, a position that’s close to safe, well-lit walking or cycling paths can be a good option. Also look at the proximity of gyms, medical services, hospitals or even pharmacies – a family with young children might love the idea of having a late-night pharmacy just around the corner.
Employment options
Most people want to live reasonably close to where they work, so keep an eye on the Coast’s major development projects, such as the Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Kawana, the Maroochydore principal activity centre and the airport expansion. These projects are expected to create jobs, which will mean new tenants looking for somewhere to hang their hat at night – local real estate agents have already reported increased demand in the suburbs surrounding the Kawana health precinct.

ARIES [March 21-April 20] Over the next 13 months, many red-hot rams will take up a new sport or hobby, start a hot romance, initiate a major creative project, go on a heavenly holiday, or welcome a new addition to the family. Saturday’s sun/Mars square could be a recipe for trouble.
TAURUS [April 21-May 21] Jupiter expands your domestic horizons. You could purchase real estate, move house or renovate to extend your living space. Venus joins Mercury and the sun in your communication zone on Saturday, so it’s a wonderful weekend to socialise.
GEMINI [May 22-June 21] Jupiter jumps into your communication zone so your social media profile gets a boost over the coming year, as you mix and mingle, socialise and circulate to the max. It’s also a terrific time to make the most of your marvelous mind via studying, writing or teaching.
CANCER [June 22-July 23] Have you been worrying about money matters? Jupiter journeys through your cash zone for the next 13 months, so make the most of the financial opportunities that come your way. Venus vamps into your sign so it’s time to improve your appearance.
LEO [July 24-Aug 23] With Jupiter moving into your sign it’s time to be the creative and charismatic cat you were born to be. Confidence is the rocket fuel that will take you places. Power struggles are likely on Saturday – unless you can let a loved one step in and be the boss (for a change).
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Vigilant Virgos can be worry-warts and workaholics but the coming year is the time to slot some regular relaxation into your schedule. Saturday’s Mercury/Neptune trine boosts your intuition and imagination, and puts you in the mood to connect with the muse within.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Laidback Libra – sitting back and letting others make decisions leaves you feeling paralyzed and powerless. With Mars marching through your sign, strive to be more self-sufficient, dynamic and decisive. Friendships are favored over the coming year.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] OK Scorpio, we all know that Saturn is in your sign and sending challenges. Don’t use that as an excuse though. Take on board the words of Nelson Mandela “It is what we make of what we have – not what we are given – that separates one person from another.”
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Jupiter (your ruling planet) shifts into your travel zone mid-week, so foreign shores beckon over the coming year. It’s also a positive period for ventures involving law, education, publishing, international business, imports and exports.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Wealth planet Jupiter moves into your ‘money-from-others’ zone so some lucky Capricorns will benefit from an inheritance, loan, financial partnership or bumper tax return. And with peacemaker Venus shifting into your partnership zone, close relationships are set to improve.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Attached Aquarius – plan a romantic holiday with your partner for some time over the next 13 months. Singles – love is likely with someone from another country or culture. On Friday and Saturday you’re more accident prone than usual, so pace yourself.
PISCES [Feb 20-March 20] It’s a wonderful week to get the balance right between thinking and feeling, as you communicate your Piscean ideas in creative ways. Be inspired by birthday great Nelson Mandela “A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.”

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Well, surf ng last weekend was simply a lot of fun. On Friday night we were surf ng under the full moon, as the swell died off! Imagine my surprise on Saturday morning when it was pumping. And everyone had slept in – go f gure. Sunday morning before the sunrise was super fun with the moon still shining bright! All is good in the world. Boy, if you missed it go put a pair of boots on and kick yourself, hard. Okay, okay, this week Friday and Saturday look like the goods with a SW wind early and three foot. So get yourself amongst it. Remember, once you’re dead, ya dead. Oh, and be cool to your fellow surfers.
FISHING REPORT
with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Silver bream, whiting and f athead will be upstream of the Bli Bli bridge on a variety of baits including worms, yabbies and prawns with the best results on the ebb tide. Flathead and grunter will be in the Cod Hole using live baits on the night rising tide. Mud crabs will be making an early run in the deeper channels with the better quality at night. SURF: Sea bream will be off the rocks at Pincushion using small pillies with tailor working just on dark. Head to Maroochy Beach for oversized whiting and dart in the low-tide gutters, but beach walkers will keep them out wide, so f sh early. OFFSHORE: The Inner Gneerings is the place for calamari and early morning is best with a pilchard berley trail. Sweetlip and sharks will be around the Blinker with right on dusk the go. They just love f sh f llets and pillies. Hit the Barwons for pearlies, squire and cod with squid the best baits. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam anglers have been taking golden perch and bass on f oated shrimps and slow-trolled small deep divers. Quality f sh are also being taken from Bjelke-Petersen and Boondooma dams where water levels are dropping and conditions seem to change from visit to visit, so beware of shallow banks and try to stick to the old riverbed when on the plane.
