CAREER
makeover
Sam Walker asks, is your career riding the wave of success, or are you about to wipe out?
W
hether you are bathing in exhilaration or coming up for breath in a tumble of whitewash, the fact is, you have to be prepared for the unexpected. Change is inevitable in any job, whether it’s a promotion or a new manager, an exciting opportunity in a different f eld or your job is suddenly obsolete. The ebbs and f ows of working life can be exciting, rewarding and interesting. But sometimes it can be boring, stressful and toxic. Knowing when to jump off the wave is not always easy and being forced off can be a shock. In Australia it is expected the average person will change jobs multiple times through their lifetime, but New Staff Solutions director Peta Simpson says young people at school today are likely to have multiple careers. “My grandfather had one job. My parents had a couple of jobs. I’ve had lots of jobs but young people will have three or four careers,” Simpson tells My Weekly Preview. “Very separate careers.” Some experts even predict they could have as many as 10 careers. But career change is not just the jurisdiction of the young. Nurse to academic, agricultural scientist to psychologist, machinery operator to aged-care nurse – these are some of the diverse vocational changes Coast locals have made. Some were through choice; others due to health. But the people involved all say it was the best thing they did.

University of the Sunshine Coast lecturer in psychology Prue Millear took the leap of faith into a new vocation 10 years ago. Millear’s f rst career was an agricultural scientist. “I graduated in ’83 into a drought,” she says. Jobs were as scarce as the rain, so it was a challenging start. She married a farmer and spent about f ve years on the land. After having a family, they moved to the Sunshine Coast and she took various roles in retail and sales, but soon realised selling wasn’t her strong point. “I knew I wanted to change and I had no idea what I could do,” Millear says. So she went to a career counsellor, which set her on the path to psychology. She was 42 when she returned to university and loved it. She completed a PhD and became a lecturer. Millear says starting over can be challenging and stressful and people with a strong sense of self-eff cacy and conf dence are more likely to back themselves and f nd the transition easier. Many people are f lled with doubt and they fear making a change won’t work. “For women re-entering the workforce, the problem they have is that gap in employment history,” Millear says. “While you may not have been employed, you have some experience in managing situations, changing situations.” She adds there are many valuable skills developed when managing a family such as
negotiation, multi-tasking and self-regulation. Simpson agrees and says people looking at re-igniting their careers need to be clever about translating the skills they develop at home to their resume and how those skills can be applied in a work environment so employers can see there are advantages in hiring you. Penny Heidke did a degree in nursing when she was 19 and eventually specialised as a theatre nurse. It’s a job she loved, but after 16 years working long days, sometimes shifts of up to 22 hours, she reached the point of burnout and knew she needed a change. In 2010 she retrained and became a secondary teacher, but it wasn’t long before she was snapped up by Central Queensland University to lecture in nursing at the Noosa campus where she combines her nursing and teaching skills. “If you’re not happy in the job you’re in and you can’t do anything about it, you need to make the choice – either stay there and burn out and rust out, or you leave,” Heidke says. She says ‘rust-out’ is when you pass the point of burn-out but you don’t leave. You are miserable and make it your goal to ensure everyone around you is also miserable. It’s not a good place to be and Heidke didn’t want to go there. While she admits her new role has many challenges – it is quite demanding and pays less – she does not regret her decision. She advises anyone feeling stressed out or unhappy and unable to change the circumstances

. . . many employers plan to increase their head count over the coming six to 12 months at work, to take the plunge and try something new. Sometimes the choice is taken out of our hands. Work restructures lead to redundancies and health issues and injuries change our abilities. Millear says this can lead to feelings of worthlessness, guilt – especially if they have a family to support – and anxiety for the future. She says many of us attach our sense of identity to our job and we can feel at a loss when it is taken from us. For those who are unexpectedly forced to make a change or are trying to re-enter the workforce, Simpson says volunteering can be a great place to start. Volunteering Sunshine Coast manager Cheryl Harris says volunteering is a great way to re-ignite a career, get back into the workforce, update skills, gain conf dence and try new things. “It looks good on your resume and shows that you have been doing things,” Harris says. And there is an incredible variety of volunteer positions available, ranging from administration to graphic design, web design, social media and caring for animals. But she says you need to be prepared to commit to ongoing work (usually one day a week) for at least three months. Health issues led Peter Bird to quit his job driving excavators and bobcats and volunteering led him to become an assistant in nursing in an
aged-care facility. And while it has been a bumpy ride for the 53-year-old, he hasn’t looked back. “I love every minute of it,” Bird says. But if you had told him four years ago he would be working in aged care, he would never have believed you. Bird was having anxiety and panic attacks at work in the construction industry and was diagnosed with depression. A psychiatrist suggested he try doing something that helps other people and a friend invited him to volunteer at Sundale Nursing Home in Nambour. He volunteered for f ve months before taking on the assistant nursing position and loves it so much he is halfway through a certif cate III in aged care. “It’s been a journey and it’s not been an easy journey, but if you put your mind to it you can overcome it,” he tells MWP. In a world of constantly changing technology, Simpson says there will be careers in the future we haven’t even thought of yet. She cited the example of social media marketer, which is in demand at the moment but didn’t exist f ve years ago. She says there has also been a bigger shift in people doing their own thing. “Flexibility seems to be far more important than climbing the corporate ladder,” she says. “On the Sunshine Coast we’re in the enviable position that we’re going to have the world’s fourth largest teaching hospital at Kawana, so if someone was looking at changing careers, choosing something health-related is smart because there are going to be jobs for that industry,” Simpson says. According to the Hays Quarterly Report of hiring hotspots and recruitment trends, f nancers, credit assessors and estimators are among the skills in demand this f nancial year. But the recruitment specialist suggests you are likely to get an interview only if you match 100 per cent of the job description. “The jobs market is more active and many

employers plan to increase their head count over the coming six to 12 months,” says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand. “Already we’ve seen vacancy activity rise and as a result there are fewer candidates for each role than there were. For employers, the focus is once again on identifying and engaging with the right talent. “If you want a new job this f nancial year, you need to match all the requirements on an employer’s wish list. Anything less and you won’t get an interview.” “For jobseekers, this means you need to highlight how your skills match the job description and be able to demonstrate your suitability in an interview through examples. Researching the organisation and speaking to your recruiter about the role will help you prepare for this,” he says. While skills are essential, Simpson says enthusiasm goes a long way. “Employers, in my experience, want someone continued over>

who wants to do the job, can do the job and will f t in the team.” It doesn’t matter how skilled you are, if an employer doesn’t think you will f t in with the team, you won’t get the job. When exploring career options, Millear says it’s important to remember that money and happiness do not necessarily go hand in hand, and there can be a lot of fulf lment in pursuing something you love. “The new theory in careers is that people are in charge of their career progression and choose to get work that suits their interests and values, and believe they can do it wherever they like. “The difference with this whole new way of thinking about careers is that you need to be relatively conf dent in your abilities and you need to be well educated.” She says we are also seeing the emergence of encore careers – people who have made a lot of money, then reach their 50s and decide to do something worthwhile. “An encore career is much more exciting,” she says. “There’s not a lot

Jake’s desert dream takes f ight
A
nyone who thinks a sense of adventure is only for the young clearly hasn’t met Ian ‘Jake’ Jacobsen. The 73-year-old has no intention of sitting idly, pushing a walking frame or planting petunias – he has bigger plans and he’s rallied a heap of “oldies” to join him on his next adventure. The Scootarbor Challenge is a 2400-kilometre scooter ride from Port Augusta to Perth, crossing the Nullarbor Plain. “I’ve done other stupid things in my life but riding a scooter across the Nullarbor with a bunch or other silly oldies wasn’t one of them,” Jacobsen says. The ex-military pilot and Vietnam veteran has always had a penchant for life and for living large. After f ying planes in Vietnam, he continued his career as a military pilot, eventually f ying the Prime Minister’s plane and later completing two one-year trips to Antarctica.
He’s travelled to most corners of the globe and was seeking a new adventure when he came up with the Scootarbor Challenge. It was literally a dream come true, he says. He was lying in the sun one day and dreamt of himself and men from his former pilot course riding across the Nullarbor Plain on scooters in air force pilot gear. He shared the dream and soon the challenge was born. He says the Sootarbor Challenge “is a little quirky and unique because it is not about the young, muscular, overpaid and beautiful superstars. It is about slowing down; wrinkled, partially stooped, not-so-wealthy people with a different style of beauty.” All participants must be aged 65 years or older. The Living Choice Kawana resident has managed to inspire 20 riders to take part in the adventure with the aim of using it to raise

money for mental health advocacy organisation beyondblue. Jacobsen initiated the project a few years ago when there were alarming suicide rates among drought-desperate farmers. He decided to hold the ride on scooters instead of motorcycles so participants wouldn’t have to obtain a special licence. And he chose to focus the event on people aged 65 and over, who are
“We want society to realise us oldies still have something to give back. We have more to offer than pushing our walkers around the local footpath and pruning our petunias.”
Find out why Anxiety, Nervousness, and Panic Attacks happen to you and how to overcome it! Do you wake in the morning feeling anxious for no apparent reason? Do you f nd yourself with panic overwhelming you through the day when nothing is planned? You might feel nervous about going to work or when the phone rings, when there’s nothing to be worried about. This can go on for months or years, and will cause debilitating emotions, reducing your ability to work, and cause relationship problems at home. There are a number of underlying causes that contribute to symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and poor concentration can also occur. Even though it seems psychological, and you may have issues in your life contributing to it, there are two very common physical problems that cause your symptoms to feel more extreme than they should feel. These affect the nervous system, causing your f ght/ f ight response to over-react. A malicious infection has been found to be a contributing factor in up to 90% of tested patients. It’s
picked up from overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is only detected in specialised testing. This infection releases a toxin affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It’s not often been associated with mental health, though studies show its impact on the brain. It’s passed on very easily, so more than one person in a household may suffer from similar symptoms. You will also f nd some people can carry this infection with no symptoms whatsoever, as it seems to act when there are other health or stress related problems. Often we’re able to correlate the f rst sign of symptoms, coinciding with a stomach bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. It’s passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work. It’s quite easy to treat, when done properly, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. Infections are just one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating anxiety and other mental health conditions. These steps have been proven with testing to improve the brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication.

inclined to extend themselves mentally and physically. “We want society to realise us oldies still have something to give back,” he says. “We have more to offer than pushing our walkers around the local footpath and pruning our petunias.” The challenge will include the
20 scooter riders, who will share 10 scooters and will have a support bus along with them. The riders come from all over Australia and the challenge will kick off in Port Augusta on September 9. They will ride the 50cc scooters, which have been sponsored for the event, in two alternating teams for half of each day, aiming to cover 240 kilometres a day with rest days along the way. He says they will use the rest days to interact with local communities and raise money for beyondblue. They have already raised in excess of $16,000 and they are hoping by the time they arrive in Perth on September 21 they will have raised $300,000. Anyone interested in learning more about the challenge or donating to their cause should visit scootarborchallenge.com.
The University of the Sunshine Coast’s annual open day is transforming into a free community event this year aimed to f re up the imaginations of Coast residents. USC’s Sunshine Coast Imaginarium will be held on August 10 from 11am and is set to feature live entertainment including a concert by singer Darren Percival, interactive activities, games and sporting demonstrations. Visitors will be invited to discover eight precincts across the campus, each featuring activities and showcasing what USC has to offer. Attendees will also have the opportunity to win prizes including a plane f ight over the Antarctic, a balloon trip over the Scenic Rim, a shark dive, a whale watching trip and tickets to Australia Zoo and Underwater World. Prospective students will also be able to take campus tours, chat with
academics and gain career advice. USC’s vice-chancellor Professor Greg Hill says the event will be the f rst for the region. “We’ve organised a great program to welcome, excite and inspire Sunshine Coast residents to connect with their university,” Hill says. “Education is clearly transformative and this fun festival will give people a chance to discover the life-changing opportunities available to them at USC.”

Why frost is rare on the Coast WIN News weather presenter and meteorologist Hannah McEwan has the low-down on frost. Getting out of bed lately has not been easy, with temperatures as low as three degrees on the Sunshine Coast. We have to consider ourselves lucky though, as just as few hours out west, the mercury has plummeted to minus seven degrees with widespread severe frost. We occasionally get frost in our region, but it is only likely to happen a couple of times a year, and mostly around the hinterland. What we tend to get is dew rather than frost, because the air temperature doesn’t get cold enough for those little dew droplets to freeze.
Frost is def ned as the development of white ice crystals or frozen dew drops on a surface near or on the ground, forming when the temperature at the surface drops below zero degrees. Frost is very common across southern Australia during winter, although some parts of southern Queensland will also see between 35 and 50 frost days a season. The frost we generally experience in Australia is called white frost, seen on tree branches, grass and car windscreens. White frost forms when water vapour in the atmosphere freezes as it comes into contact with an object that is below zero degrees. The formation of frost can be impacted by elements such as cloud cover, humidity and wind. The most favourable conditions are clear skies, low humidity and light winds. All of which we have seen regularly over the last couple of weeks. While frost can be quite a novelty here, it can have devastating effects on the agriculture industry.
Thousands at risk of type 2 diabetes Nearly 7000 people in the Caloundra electorate may be unaware they are living with type 2 diabetes or at a high risk of developing the condition, according to f gures released from Diabetes Queensland. Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle, says it is a reminder for residents to assess their risk and take steps to improve their health. “There are already more than 2499 people in Caloundra living with type 2 diabetes but this f gure could be signif cantly higher,” McArdle says. “Experts from Diabetes Queensland believe for every person diagnosed with type 2 diabetes there are nearly three people who are either undiagnosed or have pre-diabetes.” Diabetes Queensland CEO Michele Trute says people need to
understand the possibility of developing the condition. “Once diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you have the condition for life,” Trute says. But Trute says the condition can be prevented in most cases. Regular exercise and a healthy diet, including the recommended f ve serves of vegetables and two of fruit every day, helps. People are urged to take a f ve-minute type 2 diabetes assessment at diabetesqld.org.au to understand their risk of developing the condition.

Each donation will be used to help three people. For his efforts, Harrison will be recognised by the Australian Red Cross Blood Service during National Blood Donor Week from July 27 to August 3. Coast locals, who have also reached a milestone blood donation in the past 12 months. National Blood Donor Week is a celebration of Australia’s 500,000 blood donors who together made more than 1.3 million donations over the past year. Blood Service spokesperson Rebecca Ind says Harrison’s life-saving donations have potentially improved the lives of thousands of Australians, including new mothers, cancer patients and people undergoing emergency surgery. “Every one of James’ donations helps to save three lives, but his
contribution has stretched so much further,” Ind says. “Blood donors change more than just the three lives they help to save with each blood donation. A donation of blood has a ripple effect, from the person receiving the blood, right through to their entire family and their friends. “When you give a blood donation you make an amazing difference not only to the recipient but also to their loved ones. James is just one person, but every donation he gives makes an amazing difference to the lives of countless others.” Ind adds, “Winter is a very challenging time for the Blood Service and we are currently seeing the impact of colds and f u on the number of appointments being f lled on the Sunshine Coast.” To become a blood donor, call 131 495 or visit donateblood.com.au.
The second stage of renovations were unveiled at the historic Imperial Lionheart Hotel last week. The latest renovations to the home of Eumundi Lager include a new ground f oor bar and bistro. Owners Michael and Caroline Arnett and their partners opened The Green Room, the f rst stage of refurbishments, last September. “For us it is a privilege to be able to maintain the legacy of the hotel that was f rst built in 1911, that was burnt to the ground in 1926 and deliver it back to the community of Eumundi as an elegant old hotel that holds so many memories for those in our community, who with their families spent many hours together here over the years.” Arnett says.

If science is your thing – and even if it’s not – the Rockefeller University blog, The Incubator, is a great place to stop by. The Incubator aims to start people talking about science and not just the kind of thing you can cook up in a laboratory. It looks at how science intersects with art, policy and society while also running commentary on the latest scientif c research. The team at The Incubator feels everyone should have access to clear, jargon-free science information. The Australian Government has released a free Energy Rating App to help people and businesses save money on their power bills. The app, which is available for Apple, Android and BlackBerry smartphones, helps people choose energy eff cient appliances. Minister for Industry Ian Macfarlane says the app is the f rst of its kind to display power use over the life of an appliance in dollars, rather than kilowatt hours. “This app shows people what the energy rating means f nancially, and by adding the estimated total power cost to the purchase price, people can see what they are saving,” Macfarlane says. The app can be downloaded at energyrating.gov.au or you can f nd it in the Apple App Store, BlackBerry World or Google Play.

PREVENTION IS THE BEST CURE Protecting your home in the building stage gives peace of mind and prevents future heartache.
Wherever you live on the Sunshine Coast it is likely termites are among your nearest neighbours. But if you want to prevent them making a silent and destructive home invasion Morcraft Homes director Steve Morcombe says it is imperative to choose the right termite prevention system. While all new homes must include a termite barrier not all systems are created equal and Morcombe advises home buyers to understand the difference. Some include a visual barrier that relies on the residents to
regularly check the perimeter of the house for termite tunnels crossing the exposed concrete edge of the house slab. “This is one of the cheapest methods but if you are building to rent out the home or plan to be absent for extended periods, this isn’t the best system,” Morcombe says. Other systems use physical barriers such as steel mesh or aluminium fixed to the slab, preventing the termite from entering the home. Morcombe prefers to use a

safe organic chemical injected into perforated pipe, which forms a barrier around the home that termites won’t penetrate. It is retreatable for the life of the home with hidden child-proof locked traps. He says all homes should have an annual inspection by a licensed termite pest controller. “If regular inspections aren’t in place it can be as long as five or six years before an infestation is found,” he says. “They can do massive damage to a home if they are undetected for an extended period of time.” In worse case scenarios he says repairing the damage can be as disruptive as a major renovation with more emotional stress and no improvement to the home. “Prevention is the best form of cure and it is easier, less costly and less invasive than dealing with a termite infestation.”
Morcombe says another important component to protect home buyers from future heartache is ensuring the plaster work is done correctly when the house is built. He says plaster work is one of the Queensland Building Construction Commission’s biggest areas of consumer complaint. “The only way to achieve a level 5 ceiling finish and meet the Australian Standards is to use metal ceiling barriers.” He also advises the use of backblocking. These methods give a flatter finish, eliminate shadow lines, shrinkage cracks and screws popping and are virtually maintenance free. Protecting your biggest asset from ongoing maintenance or major repair work starts with the right treatment in the building process.

CAVES, SKELETONS AND A SWIM
Evidence of human sacrif ce in Maya times litters the f oors of the Actun Tunichil Muknal caves, where the skeletons are welded in place by limestone sediment. Mayan pottery is also frozen in time, with archaeologists opting to leave most artefacts as they were centuries ago. To get to the caves, visitors are led down a gentle jungle trail that includes several river crossings. Next, is an invigorating swim across a frigid pool of water at the cave’s mouth (which is patrolled by a resident vine snake). Water winds throughout the cave and visitors have to squeeze through impossible-looking openings before being rewarded with the archaeological trove. But don’t expect to plaster social media with photos documenting the adventure. Clumsy tourists – including one who left a camera-sized hole in the skull of a sacrif ced child – led to a ban on cameras at the site.
El Castillo at Xunantunich
The same turquoise waters that lure tourists to Caribbean destinations slosh around Belize’s island chain. But tiny Belize has a major advantage – spectacular Maya ruins tucked away in lush jungle. The nation is home to more prehistoric buildings than modern-day ones, according to its Institute of Archaeology. That

ancient appeal draws in backpackers eager for adventure as well as divers ready to gawk at its bustling reefs or plunge into its famed Blue Hole. Belize has all the ingredients for a surf and turf vacation – at least for those who don’t mind the odd giant cockroach or neon green frog that may invade their jungle dwellings.

to the jungle. Shards of ancient pottery are scattered around the complex, which includes astronomical buildings, ball courts, palaces and a 43-metre-tall pyramid that remains the tallest man-made structure in Belize. The guttural intonations of howler monkeys and the eerie screech of the yellow-tailed bird provide the soundtrack for those wandering through the massive archaeological site.
STONE WOMAN AND EL CASTILLO
This complex of ruins got its Maya name, Xunantunich – meaning ‘Stone Woman’ – from a sun-soaked apparition said to haunt the site. The city was built up over millennia and its history is sketched out neatly at the newly opened visitor’s centre. At the site itself, the main attraction is the ruin known as El Castillo, which towers above the jungle. Four elaborate stucco friezes depicting Maya gods once hugged each side of the building. Two remain, and they’re both covered by f breglass copies to preserve the originals. Despite its lofty appearance and elaborate decorations, the Castillo likely served as an administrative hub, not a temple, according to the visitor’s centre.
PALACE, BALL COURT AND PLACE OF THE TICKS
Even from its perch high up on a hill, Cahal Pech lives in the shadow of its more impressive neighbours, Caracol, Xunantunich and Tikal. Cahal Pech, which unf atteringly means ‘Place of the Ticks’ in Yucatec and Mopan Mayan, sits on the outskirts of San Ignacio, a popular base for those

exploring Maya ruins. Under the cover of an encroaching jungle, visitors can get a glimpse of how the upper crust lived in Maya times through the site’s palace structures. The site is also home to a nice example of a Maya ball court.
BARRIER REEF AND BLUE HOLE
Caye Caulker is a sandy strip of land surrounded by a bounty of sea life. The more laid-back alternative to San Pedro (which Madonna sang about in her 1987 hit La Isla Bonita), provides a base for the thriftier tourist looking to explore Belize’s nearby barrier reef. The island is crowded with tour companies that ferry visitors to reef hot spots, such as the intimidating Shark Ray Alley. The f sh expectantly clamour around any boat that arrives. Other underwater highlights include an enormous logger turtle that is blind in one eye, and a rainbow of tropical f sh. Eerie night snorkelling affords an opportunity to watch the f sh scurry to f nd a home among the reef before darkness falls. When things turn truly nocturnal, snorkellers armed with underwater LEDs can spot squid, octopus, lobster and crabs. Scuba divers can also catch a ride to Belize’s iconic Great Blue Hole, an underwater sinkhole 300 metres wide and 125 metres deep.
IGUANA PROJECT
Iguanas scurry all over San Ignacio thanks in part to the efforts of the Iguana Project, which hatches and releases the critters whose eggs are regularly gobbled up by predators in the wild. A guided tour
Entrance to Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave
of the facility where they’re kept allows tourists to get up close and personal with the scaly beasts. Among the highlights is the iguana nursery, where willing participants can be covered in a brood of four- to six-month-old bright green iguanas. The project works to boost the lizard’s population by releasing 100 to 150 iguanas a year. AAP
Getting there:
Belize is between Mexico and Guatemala. From Belize City, water taxis serve Caye Caulker and San Pedro. Buses and shuttles take tourists inland to San Ignacio, where a variety of tour companies run day trips to Maya ruins sites. See travelbelize.org.

Innovate or die Sam Walker speaks with an inventiologist to discover the keys to business success.
I
n a fast-paced world of ever-evolving technology and increasing international competition for our traditional industries, it has never been more important for businesses to innovate. The ability to think outside the square is the key to productivity, growth and, ultimately, survival. Judy Anderson, an inventiologist at innovation consultancy Inventium, which works with companies around the globe including Lego, Coca Cola Amatil and Telstra, says no matter how well things are going, businesses can’t afford to rest on their laurels. “Innovation is critical for business success,” Anderson says. And there are two simple reasons – to grow and to ensure your business doesn’t die. “Without innovation you’re going to stop growth,” she says. Australians are renowned for their ability to innovate. Our harsh environment has spawned a nation of problem solvers with inventions from the stump jump plough in the 1800s to the cochlear ear implant, changing the way things are done. But innovation is not just about coming up with a new product. “We def ne innovation as change that adds value,” Anderson says. That can be product innovation, process innovation, service innovation, new business models or anything else that creates a positive change to your business. Kath Massey attributes the existence and success of her business, Massey Online Management, to innovation. “If we didn’t f nd the innovations for this business we would not be on the Coast,” Massey says. She and her husband were caravan park managers until they lost their jobs in the f nancial downturn in 2008. Massey did some short-term contract work for a caravan park in Sydney and realised it was work she could do remotely so she secured a contract and returned to the Coast. Today her business provides online support and digital marketing
for caravan parks around the nation. While the business idea is unique, she says f nding ways to make it grow have also been innovative. When she was approached by a farmer from Childers, who has a lifetime of experience in caravan parks and industry skills that were impossible to put a price on, she had

to overcome technical problems to enable the collaboration to work. “If we hadn’t have found a way to work together then that knowledge would have been lost and my business would have been nowhere near as successful as it is,” Massey says. As the business grew and she needed cost-effective freelancers she turned to the Philippines and India to source help with the overf ow. “We’re always looking for ways that we can do things more eff ciently and that’s very important.” Massey says so many areas of successful business management require creative thinking. “It’s very important to be creative at all M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

times, particularly when you’re getting started so you can deliver what you need and still make a prof t.” But Anderson says it is not just business owners and managers who need to be creative. “Being able to encourage creative capability in your workforce is essential,” she says. She adds scientif c evidence shows our physical environment signif cantly impacts our ability to think creatively and providing an environment that encourages diverse ideas can help grow your business opportunities. “Creativity is like any other working ability; with the right tools and training anyone can be creative. It’s very easy to scale down an idea that’s out there, but it’s very hard to gear up an idea that’s boring.”

Global Innovation Index
Minister for Industry Ian Macfarlane launched the Global Innovation Index 2014 last week, saying Australia will continue to consolidate its position in global supply chains and global markets. “The Global Innovation Index 2014 shines a light on the creativity, inventiveness, business capability and innovative spirit of Australians,” Macfarlane says. Dr Francis Gurry, director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO – a United Nations agency and co-authors of the Index) joined Macfarlane at the launch and says launching the GII in the lead-up to the G20 in Brisbane is an honour. “The GII is a unique tool for measuring and improving innovation performance,” Gurry says. “It recognises the centrality of innovation for a job-rich, strong, sustainable and balanced growth path – as envisioned by the G20 leadership. The GII 2014 surveys 143 economies around the world to gauge their innovation capabilities. For more information visit globalinnovationindex.org.

Getting the balance right
The Big Smoke’s Alexandra Tselios tells MWP readers why she thinks work/life balance is a myth. We’ve become so focused on achieving the elusive work/life balance that the pressure to have and maintain this impossible juggle is causing more stress than it’s worth. The key is to organically migrate our work and personal lives in a satisfying and fruitful way, which means instead of constructing clear boundaries that depend on goals and
objectives, we embrace f uidity and accept that work and life are now intertwined. There is no one-size-f ts-all approach and one person’s domestic bliss is another person’s lifestyle nightmare. Studies have shown that workplace f exibility helps decrease employees stress – so why are we still stressed? It is misguided to assume the rest
of the world will be able to f t in with your personal schedule. Your job may entail dealing with a global market and no one cares about your dinner plans. This doesn’t mean you completely sell out and make work your only priority, but it does mean having the ability to discern what is important right now, and what can be done in a few hours is imperative. We often feel undue expectations by others. The reality is that your work is there to be completed by you in the best possible manner. Don’t be at the mercy of other peoples’ unrealistic expectations and moods and don’t put these expectations on yourself. In a marketplace connected 24/7, we need to approach our work lives competitively, which also serves all areas of our home life effectively. Releasing the fear of not achieving the perfect balance all the time allows you to work in timepoor seasonal periods and holiday seasons guilt-free and with positive results – proving the work/life balance myth was never something to lose sleep over.
Great news for exporters Australian exporters are feeling conf dent with expectations of an increase in overseas sales growth, according to research released by Australia’s export credit agency Ef c this month. The growing optimism is driven by an expected depreciation in the Australian dollar. Other reasons cited include better business conditions and improved demand in existing markets, introduction of new products and services and an improved sales strategy. Accessing f nance to support overseas growth continues to be a challenge for many SMEs, but government and industry bodies like Ef c and Austrade are able to help those wanting to take advantage of export growth opportunities. Have you applied for the Australian Export Awards? Winners from the Queensland export awards will become national f nalists. Queensland entries close on July 30. STAFF We provide realistic recruitment solutions for the hospitality industry
Unravelling the mystery of the cloud Greg Tuckwell is the director of Poole Group Accountants and Investment Advisors Everyone is talking about the ‘cloud’. So what is it, exactly? Traditionally, data like emails, documents and computer programs were stored on your computer. Cloud-based services are stored and accessed on a range of devices available via the internet. The benef ts of the cloud are signif cant and include: • Capital expenditure on computer systems can be cut dramatically. • Programs are automatically updated so you always have the latest version. • Many programs are subscription based so you can add or delete programs to suit your needs. • Cloud-based services are automatically backed up, usually in multiple locations. • Information is available anywhere,
any time and on any device. • You can discuss and share f les with colleagues in real time without saving and sending back-ups. The biggest question I receive is about the security of the cloud. A few basic rules can minimise any risks: • Use reputable service providers. • Ensure passwords are strong and are changed regularly. • Ensure your own computers have strong security protocols to avoid illegal hackers. • Be vigilant for hoax emails ‘phishing’ for your usernames and passwords. • Use common sense when responding to unknown emails. Overall, the benef ts of using cloud-based solutions far exceed any perceived security issues provided basic protocols and processes are followed.

THE WEEK THAT WAS TOP BULLS
AUSTRALIAN MARKET EXPECTATIONS
Darryl Watt is from Ord Minnett in Buderim
Last week we looked at the global economy. This week we will concentrate on the Australian market. We have a December target of 5700 for the ASX200 index. With the index currently around the 5500 level, we consider the Australian market is trading slightly below fair value. Against a market that is likely to grind higher, valuations for lowgrowth but predictable companies have become challenging, and micro factors are starting to weigh more heavily. Over the course of the new f nancial year, we believe that valuations will start to become
a stronger brake, but note that a weaker Australian dollar and better developed world growth should add some support. We believe the Australian dollar’s rebound also owes a lot to central banks buying foreign currencies to maintain weightings in foreign reserves. As the marginal effect of this force starts to wane and the relative macro trends turn more favourable to the American dollar, we expect the Australian dollar should drift back, although it is unlikely to produce a decisive depreciation of the currency. In this environment, our preferences include energy stocks such as Woodside and Santos, which is not primarily a macro-based view, but they would benef t from any fall in the Australian dollar and stronger growth in developed markets. Non-commodity exposure to stronger developed market growth includes Amcor, Brambles and Goodman Group. These stocks would also benef t from a retreat in the Australian dollar, as would CSL,
Lend Lease and Westf eld Corp. Some would say the rally could be longer and stronger because when interest rates are at a cyclical low without high levels of risk, as they are now, then equities won’t stop until they become clearly expensive. The fact that stock markets have ground higher rather than moved exponentially higher leads us to believe that the cycle won’t end in an egregious over-valuation phase. That said, the ASX 200 excluding Resources universe is on a high price/earnings ratio compared with history; so we are assuming that low rates can keep valuations suspended at a high level. One supportive inf uence for equities in the 2015 f nancial year should be a f rming trend for developed economy growth.

Cooking with fennel
From Brightwater Hotel’s executive chef Damien Grimes Fennel, a native of Europe, has a white bulb-like base, celery-like stalks and a distinctive aromatic smell. With a strong aniseed taste, this vegetable can be eaten raw in salad, braised or grilled on the barbecue. Look for clean tight white bulbs with leafy green stalks. Cooking tips: • Remove green stalks and f nely shave the bulb in a food processor. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, the juice of a lemon and a chopped chilli. Remove the skin from an orange, slice and mix with the fennel and some fresh basil. Serve with some grilled white f sh. • Clean the bulbs and cut into quarters. Place in a casserole dish, cover with some chicken stock, add some butter, thyme and garlic. Cover with a lid and bake in a moderate oven until tender. Remove from the stock and sprinkle with freshly shaved parmesan. Serve with roast chicken. • Dice fennel and a potato into two-centimetre cubes. Cook on a medium heat in a mixture of olive oil, butter and garlic until tender and golden brown. Finish with baby capers and sage leaves and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Serve with grilled pork chops.

Audi’s glorious power tripper WORDS Peter Atkinson
T
he power and the glory. Author Frank Hardy suggested you could only have one without the other. But provided you’ve got the cash, this car will give you both. Audi’s latest rocketship, the RS5 Cabriolet, delivers the sublime and the ridiculous in equal portions, at the push of a button. The power part is obvious from the minute you push the start button and the car’s highperformance 4.2-litre V8 snarls to life. The glory part? Well, that arrives not long after, again at the
push of a button when you peel back the cloth folding roof and let the sun shine in on this extravagant machine. The Germans, of course, have become rather good at building convertibles – surprising for a country known for its freezing winters. At a tick over $175,000, the RS5 Cabriolet is certainly an expensive way to get your vitamin D during that limited summer. That’s less of an issue in Australia, of course. It combines the sledgehammer performance of
a true supercar (331 kilowatts and a zero to 100 kilometres per hour time of less than f ve seconds) with the boulevard-cruising appeal of the best European luxury drop-tops. Those two experiences can be enjoyed together or separately depending on your mood. In normal drive mode, the RS5 is a relatively civilised thing, whose performance credentials you might tend to overlook – apart from the fat tyres, massive rear exhausts and the ominous rumble they emit. Driven sedately, the Audi’s seven-speed R-Tronic transmission, a beefed-up version of the dual-clutch auto you’ll f nd in all manner of Audis and their corporate Volkswagen cousins, is smooth and unobtrusive. Put the car into sport mode, though, and even slowing down becomes an experience, with the throttle blipping audibly with each downshift. Those gearshifts become more def ned, the gears held noticeably longer and the engine’s stunning performance very much in evidence when its Dr Jekyll persona switches to Mr Hyde. The experience is enhanced with the roof down, when the symphony from those twin exhausts f lls the air. The RS5 is a newcomer to the Audi stable, replacing the previous RS4 Cabriolet. But it showcases the same mechanical package as the RS4 sedan and Avant (wagon). The folding roof adds the better part of $20,000 to the cost but when your budget stretches to this part of the market, it’s a modest price to pay for the additional look-at-me factor of rag-top. Of course, as is inevitably the case with any car when its roof is removed, the Cabriolet’s handling can’t quite match that of its coupe siblings. Audi has done a good job disguising this inherent trait, mind you. The RS5 exhibits minimal body-f ex of the scuttle-shake typical of topless machines. But continued page 36>

<from page 34 the added steel required to achieve that end blunts its f recracker performance, if ever so slightly. To compensate, aluminium front fenders shed some excess weight. There’s also the fabulous, chunky, f at-bottomed sports steering wheel, the sculpted stainless-steel gearshift lever with ‘RS’ logo, not to mention the fabulous body-hugging sports seats which are part of the RS package. As good as these leather-clad pews are, the seats have a couple of shortcomings. There’s no electronic adjustment, surprising for a car of this price range; and they don’t fold easily forward to provide access to the two rear seats. To be honest, the back seats are no more than an occasional proposition anyway. The RS5 was never built to be a practical machine, and you’ll need to make some other compromises if you’re lucky enough to own one. With the cloth roof on, visibility out of the rear quarters is pretty poor, although a full reversing camera, with
turning graphics, helps with parking. Blind-spot indicators on the wing mirrors help with lane-changing. Boot space is also compromised by the roof compartment, which is reasonably deep but can accommodate only relatively f at items. Golf clubs will have to ride in the passenger seat. And it goes without saying that an engine with this much punch tends not to be particularly frugal. We burned through our f rst tankful in about four days – admittedly with one 200-kilometre round trip – but around town you’ll become fairly familiar with your local service station attendant.
And with its preference for premium unleaded, you’ll be forking out about $100 per tankful. Still, those are relatively minor concerns in a car that, above all else, is about maximum driving enjoyment. On that score, the RS5 more than earns its stripes. Acceleration and handling, thanks to Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive grip, are exemplary. Ride is good for the most part, although you’ll notice any harsh road imperfections, thanks to its grippy, low-prof le tyres and massive, gun-metal grey alloy rims. The suspension can be softened via the Audi drive select system. The 180-watt, 10-speaker audio system is fabulous, but struggles to compete with the car’s own soundtrack. Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming are standard, satellite navigation with 20GB hard-drive, plus a new Audi-connect system allowing passengers to surf the internet via the car’s own integrated WiFi hotspot. Would we be happy to experience this power and glory again? Forever. And ever. Amen.

creature comforts Is your family about to get a new four-legged member? Before you bring home your new pet, you’ll need to make sure the home is a safe and inviting space for them. We have some tips to help you prepare.
BEDROOMS
Are you the kind of person who loves having a f oordrobe? You’ll need to get better at hanging and folding clothes, because your new kitten or puppy will love nothing better than chewing, pulling and carrying fabric and shoes. Invest in a laundry basket or shoe rack, or get in the habit of closing your bedroom door at all times. If you have a very young pet, be careful you don’t accidentally shut him ore her in a walk-in robe – kittens and puppies love curling up in warm clothes and blankets to sleep.
LIVING AREAS
A boisterous pet with a swinging tail and a fondness for jumping has little regard for antique glassware or expensive lamps – make sure these are out of your pet’s impact zone. Electrical cords and curtain or blind pulls are a hazard for animals, so make sure these are secured out of reach. If your pet is allowed to sit on the couch, invest in a special blanket that will designate their spot, as claws are not kind to most fabrics or coverings. Also, check under the couch and cushions regularly for any household items, such as coins or hairclips, that may have fallen out of your pockets – if swallowed these can be fatal for pets.
KITCHEN/BATHROOM
If your rubbish bin is out in the open, f nd it a new home – a dog or cat will delight in your smelly [ 38 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J ULY 25, 2014
38.indd 1
household rubbish. Inquisitive pets are known to open low drawers or cupboards, so make sure these don’t hold food, harmful cleaning products or medicines (or invest in child locks, if you have to). In winter, your cat may seek the warmth of any nooks or spaces around appliances, so make sure they can’t f t behind the fridge or microwave; also get in the habit of closing the toilet lid so your pet doesn’t fall in while trying to drink the water.
A boisterous pet with a swinging tail and a fondness for jumping has little regard for antique glassware or expensive lamps LAUNDRY
Many households let their dog or cat sleep in the laundry and also store their pet’s food dish, water bowl or kitty litter in this room. So it is important that the laundry be as safe and secure for your pet as possible. If you are installing a pet door, do it in the laundry, where they can easily access food and
fresh water when they need it. Secure any chemicals or cleaning products up high and make sure your dog can’t climb onto the bench and get at the washing powder. And it might sound silly, but if you have a kitten, always look in the clothes dryer before you turn it on.
GARAGE/SHEDS
Sharp and potentially dangerous tools should be stored high, out of reach, along with any chemicals or poisons (this includes general garden items such as fertiliser or motor oil). If your pet has easy access to the garage, consider installing some strategic mirrors so you can see behind your vehicle as you back out – the side and rearview mirrors might not show you where they are.
OUTSIDE AREAS
If you have a deck or verandah, be mindful about where you keep your shoes, wetsuit and so on. Also think about any stairs or drop-offs that might be diff cult for a small kitten or puppy to navigate. The garden is a great place for pets to explore, and a backyard will help keep them entertained, but be mindful your plants aren’t poisonous – if you’re concerned take some photos into your local nursery and ask for advice. Check all fences and gates to make sure they are secure, and don’t leave chairs or climbable objects near the perimeter or pool fence. And f nally, always leave your dog with a few toys to prevent it getting bored and digging up your garden. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

MPP team launches new hinterland magazine

t’s no secret the Sunshine Coast property scene is enjoying a buoyant period. After a very sluggish couple of years, agents across the board are reporting a signif cant amount of buyer activity not seen in the region since 2010. Traditionally lagging behind its coastal cousin by up to several months, the hinterland region of the Sunshine Coast is also experiencing a surge in buyer activity. Day & Grimes marketing manager Gary Langford tells My Property Preview, “There is a lot happening in the hinterland and that’s maybe an affordability issue. There is a lot more affordable property up here, and as the coast becomes busier the relaxed lifestyle is starting to attract people.” He adds, “An amazingly, the population of Nambour seems to be getting younger and younger, which is a good sign.” The hinterland areas between Glass House Mountains in the south

Suburbs in and around the central hub of Nambour lay claim to having some of the most affordable property in our region. With this in mind, MWP today launches a new monthly publication, 100 per cent dedicated to hinterland property. In a compact format totalling 32 pages showcasing some of the region’s f nest properties for sale, My Hinterland Property is inserted into all of MWP’s
commercial bulk drops and pick-up points across the Sunshine Coast totalling 10,000 copies. My Hinterland Property is also available to read online at the MWP website www.myweeklypreview.com.au. Langford says it is great that a publication has come on board to f nally provide the hinterland with such as magazine. “I think it is a terrif c idea. To have a dedicated magazine just for the hinterland – it’s about time.” Look out for your copy on the last week of every month. The new

It’s time to start that project, hit the gym or turn up the music and dance. Mars (your ruling planet) shifts into Scorpio (from July 26-September 14) which intensiďŹ es your sensuality.
TAURUS [April 21-May 21] Have you been procrastinating bulls? Are there jobs around the house that you’ve been putting off? The new moon encourages you to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Family and home life are where you need to make some changes and adjustments – the sooner the better.
GEMINI [May 22-June 21] The week begins with confusion and complications, but apart from a minor hiccup on Friday morning, you’ll become more settled and grounded as the week progresses. On the weekend, the new moon urges you to ďŹ nd fresh ways to connect with those around you.
CANCER [June 22-July 23] Imagination and innovation are the secrets to getting ahead at work. Looking for employment? Present yourself as an individual who stands out. The new moon’s stimulating your self-esteem zone, so you’re keen to improve your appearance.
LEO [July 24-Aug 23] With Friday’s sun/Jupiter conjunction and the new moon in your sign on the weekend, conďŹ dent, charismatic cats are ready to sparkle and shine! Then Jupiter links up with the moon on sunday, so you’re deďŹ nitely in the mood for excess.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] The new moon and Jupiter activate your zone of memories, secrets and solitude (plus Pluto opposes Mercury) so be careful you don’t become obsessed with people, situations or beliefs that are well past their used-by date. It’s time to wipe the slate clean and start over.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Librans are the fashionistas of the zodiac. As Venus (planet of beauty) moves through your public/reputation zone, it’s worth remembering that the secret to your style is elegance. The weekend new moon helps jolt you out of laidback mode, and into productive mode.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] On Tuesday, resist the temptation to be drawn into an argument. If you do, it will only make matters worse. Mars moves through your sign (from Saturday until September 14) magnifying your motivation, discipline and sex appeal but it also your stubborn side.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Friday’s sun/Jupiter aspect and sunday’s new moon blast you out of a rut. Travel, study and education are all favoured, as you head off in a new direction. Be inspired by Mark Twain “Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Friday is your pick of the week as you conďŹ rm a deal, consolidate a joint venture or stabilise a shaky relationship. Attached Capricorns – have you been arguing with your partner? Make the ďŹ rst move, and hold out the olive branch of peace.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Your mercurial mind is ďŹ ring on Friday but slow down before you blow a fuse! Are your close relationships going nowhere? Do you feel like you’re reacting to others on autopilot? Saturday’s new moon provides a golden opportunity to patch things up and start afresh.
PISCES [Feb 20-March 20] Attached ďŹ sh – romance is in the air on Wednesday so it’s a wonderful evening for dining and dancing. Single ďŹ sh – look for love with a Taurus or a Cancer. But is routine letting you down? Perhaps it’s time to tune into the new moon and try a different approach.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
Well, well, J-Bay f nished with four Aussies taking semi-f nals positions. Now that is depth! Get online and watch Tom Curren’s 10-point ride against Occy. Then understand he is 50! And riding like that. Sadly Occy did look a little bloated – just sayin’. Now put down those Tim Tams and get into some yoga! Life is good and you might just discover a few extra years in you. The next event will be at Tahiti where men are men and the waves are hideously scary! The downside to this competition is it is just a barrel, so no time for top turns. Anyhoo, no waves really around this weekend so time to recover from the past few weeks. Maybe head north and you might be rewarded for your effort! As Neil Young used to say, “Keep on rockin’ in the free world.” Oh, and Mick Fanning won!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Silver bream will be working over the Maroochy Bar and moving up the river and into the creeks. Small deep-diving lures, slow-sink f ies and a variety of baits and plastic lures are returning quality f sh from almost any snag gutter or drop-off. A few f athead and whiting are around Goat Island. SURF: Bream will be moving along beach gutters from Mudjimba to Maroochydore with mullet f llet and fowl gut best. Pincushion has tailor taking lures at dawn and pillies at dusk. OFFSHORE: The swell is dropping off and close-in reefs are returning sweetlip, parrot and moses perch on squid and f sh. The Barwon Banks are returning pearl perch and snappery squire on pilchards. Some spotted mackerel are at Caloundra 12 Mile. FRESHWATER: Winter bass are taking live shrimps at Somerset Dam, and golden perch are still around and can be enticed by jigging lures and tails when f sh schools are located. Lake Baroon has a few small bass and spangled perch, making it a great place to take the kids for a day.
