T

he MWP editorial team and I have just had a lovely long chat about blogging. It’s something we talk about a lot. As journalists we are interested in information, in whatever form it’s in as it makes its way out into the world, and blogs are big. Walk into a room and ask “who has a blog?”, and you might be surprised to see how many hands shoot up in the air. In fact, a few of us in the MWP off ce have our own little blogs, because if there is anything that social media and the information age has taught us, it’s that people love to share. So we thought it’s time to share with you – this week our cover story is all about blogs. MWP’s Sam Walker is on the case and answers the big blogging questions - what are they, why do it, and who are the locals that are making a go of it? So grab your laptop, head to a cafe with free wi-f and then turn over the page. You’ll be posting on your own blog before you know it. If you still need a techie f x after reading this story, we have an app, gadget and must-visit site over in my technology on page 20. If that’s too much technology, head over to page 18, where we dip our toes in the Mediterranean and enjoy a slower pace in Malta (another one to add to my ‘places I want to visit’ list). If you’re thinking of spending your spare cash on a second mortgage (or even a f rst), we have advice for f rst-time property investors over in My Property Preview. With prices still low, and the Sunshine Coast set to really take off, it’s still a good time to buy. We have tips to help you save plus much more, starting on Jemma Pearson page 31.

blog love

MWP’s Sam Walker unravels the mystery of blogging and explores why it has become a global phenomenon, and whether you should be on board.

T

o blog or not to blog: that is the question you may be asking. Or you could just be sitting back wondering what on earth this blogging caper is all about. The thing is, while it sounds pretty new, blogging has been with us for quite a while and chances are you’ve visited a few blogs during your online travels without realising it. Blogging began in the 1990s, although there may be prototypes dating back as far as the ’80s. Early on they were known as a weblog, which was shortened to blog, and they were essentially a way of sharing aspects of your life – an online journal or diary, so to speak. Travellers were sharing tales from afar with family and friends, new mums were uploading the trials, tribulations and triumphs of motherhood and hobbyists were sharing details of their latest projects. But in recent years they’ve morphed into quite a phenomenon. You’ll f nd blogs on food and fashion, travel and lifestyle, diet and health, art and craft, gardening and permaculture, f shing, technology, marketing and business, news and politics. Pretty much every subject

[ 6 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ AUG UST 1, 2014

is covered by a blog somewhere. So what is a blog, exactly? Darren Rowse describes them as a website that is ordered reverse chronologically. They generally have the capacity for public comments and provide an interactive space encouraging discussion and the sharing of ideas. “They’re the general rules but there’s certainly an increasing blurring of the lines in how they look and how they operate,” Rowse says. Rowse is arguably Australia’s most successful blogger. He is the f rst (that he is aware of) to make a full-time living from blogging and as the founder of the popular ProBlogger site, he is a source of information and inspiration for bloggers around the world. Rowse entered this new world of publishing with a personal blog in 2002, where he says he experimented with 20 or so topics, many of which were started by people asking questions or problems he was able to respond to. He learnt through that process, which topics garnered the most interest. He has had many blogs since, but ProBlogger and Digital Photography School are his two most successful.

I think a lot of people start when there’s a change in their life in some way and they want to interact around that change, or they want to keep engaging their professional skills kills Darren Rowse

M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

29/07/2014 2:45:41 PM

Growing popularity Rowse co-ordinates Australia’s annual ProBlogger conference, which is taking place on the Gold Coast at the end of this month. The popularity of blogging is ref ected in the popularity of the conference, which sold out in hours this year. The conference started in Melbourne f ve years ago with 100 attendees and has grown by about 100 people each year. So why is there so much enthusiasm for blogging? “It’s a tricky one. I think a lot of people get into blogging not because they want to make money, but because they feel like they’ve got something to say or they want to interact with other people,” Rowse says. “With our event, probably 85 per cent of our attendees are women and the majority of them started blogging when they’ve had children for the f rst time.

“I think a lot of people start when there’s a change in their life in some way and they want to interact around that change, or they want to keep engaging their professional skills.” But Rowse says there has also been a growing number of successful blogs in the mainstream media over the past couple of years. And the topics vary from political commentary to managing health issues. “Certainly, my blogs have been much more about teaching and training and educating, but I guess on the same front, some people need inspiration or they need a place to belong or people need entertainment or a laugh, so you can be useful beyond training or educating, but certainly that’s where I’ve found most of my success,” he says.

Show me the money $ $ $ If you think blogging might be an easy money-spinner or a good part-time job you can do from home, think carefully. For the most part, blogs are a labour of love. While increasing numbers of bloggers are making a living from their online presence, many others are not. And those who are, work hard at it, creating regular content, looking at new ways to engage their readers and promoting it heavily. “A lot of people don’t understand when they start out that they need to not only write content but be willing to promote it,” Rowse says. “A lot of people get into blogging thinking that they will be discovered, but most people who make it big really push hard. They promote themselves and that can be a bit of a stretch for

those of us who are shy and not self-promotional.” But there are various ways blogs can generate income once it becomes successful. Rowse says his biggest money earner is from selling eBooks. Others include direct ad sales, and aff liate promotions, where he earns commissions on other people’s courses and eBooks. As his expertise grew he has also earned money as a speaker, a consultant, from the ProBlogger job board and running events. And he says it all happened over 10 years. Maureen Shaw from The Orgasmic Chef (see panel right) accepts paid advertising and product reviews on her site, but while it earns her a bit of money and pays for the blog, it is not a substantial income earner at this stage.

Fast Facts It is estimated there are more than 152 million blogs on the internet. A new blog is created every half a second. Businesses that blog at least 20 times per month generate five times more traffic than businesses that blog less than four times a month. In 2001 blogging became mainstream with niche sites such as Mashable and TechCrunch. Some of the world’s highest earning blogs include The Huffington Post, Mashable, Perez Hilton, Techcrunch and Smashing Magazine.

The Orgasmic Chef

T

he Orgasmic Chef was born about three years ago, when Minyama woman Maureen Shaw got tired of her children calling her from America at 4am to ask for their favourite childhood recipes. When her husband suggested she put the recipes online so they could be accessed day and night, she tentatively agreed. And she hasn’t looked back. Today, it’s not just her children looking at the site. The statistics vary slightly but at the last check Shaw says the Orgasmic Chef had about 100,000 hits a month. But it didn’t happen overnight. Initially wary of the whole online experience and fearing people wouldn’t be interested in stories from someone in their 60s, Shaw kept the site pretty simple, revealing nothing of herself in her posts. “I didn’t put my name on it and I didn’t put anything about myself,” she says. The 66-year-old says the site was ticking over nicely when she met a lady in marketing, who, over coffee, suggested her site would benef t greatly from an injection of her personality. She reluctantly put her photo up, telling her husband if she lost all her followers as a result she would just have to start again with a new domain name. “So I put it up there and the world didn’t fall apart,” she says. “The recipe is this: write a good story and give them a hell of a good recipe and you won’t look back.” She looked at all the blogs she followed and why she followed them and realised it was because of their personal stories. But she says it was when she joined Pinterest that her blog escalated and in four months she had more than 25,000 followers. She has been recognised several times in various lists of the nation’s top food blogs. continued over>

it’s perhaps a more personal way to communicate that can break down some of the … suspicion that people have of brands and personalise what you’re doing.” He says storytelling is one of the best ways for a business to use a blog. Geoff Moller runs a business consultancy from Buderim, specialising in intellectual property and trademarks and has been publishing a blog for about a year. He is a big believer in the ability of blogs to help build a brand, whether it is a personal or business brand. Moller says it helps a business demonstrate expertise and gives them the ability to be a thought leader on certain subjects. “For me, it helps me have a voice and share my opinions on different subjects as well.” An article published in 2010 was the catalyst for his blog. “The stats for having a blog from the research I found was that companies that have a blog get 55 per cent more traff c to their website in comparison to companies that don’t have a blog,” Moller says. More recent statistics suggest this f gure is as high as 67 per cent. “It indicates that a business shouldn’t

ome experts have suggested blogs are a necessity for businesses of today. “My view on them is that not every business needs one, but they certainly are useful to extend a variety of channels of your business,” says ProBlogger founder Darren Rowse. They can be used to support customer service, marketing, public relations or internal communications. “There are lots of different ways you can use them as a business and I think businesses that do use them, often f nd

underestimate the opportunity to generate more worthwhile leads from blogging in the B2B market space,” he says. Moller has no idea how many visitors his blog receives and he doesn’t really care. Urban teenagers ignorant about farming

A

ustralia’s urban-rural divide is growing, with more than 75 per cent of teenagers surveyed recently, admitting they know only a little or nothing about farming and food production. The research, commissioned by agricultural banking specialist Rabobank, also found 17 per cent of urban teenagers surveyed have never been on a farm, while a further 50 per cent have been to a farm less than four times. However, most still perceive farming and food production as extremely or very important to the nation. The Rabobank Farm Experience Urban Youth Research surveyed 600 students from Australian capital cities aged between 15 and 18. Rabobank Australian and New Zealand head of Sustainable Business Development Marc Oostdijk says the research shows a “concerning knowledge gap among Australian youth when it comes to agriculture and food production. Oostdijk says the research was conducted because the bank and its farming clients were genuinely concerned that young Australians may not understand or appreciate the role of

agriculture in the nation’s economy and future. “It is also important to help bridge this disconnect between city and rural communities in order to attract young people to work in agriculture and become part of securing the sector’s future, he says. “The very limited exposure many young people in Australian cities have to farming and where their food and agricultural produce comes from was clearly identif ed in this research, with the survey showing two thirds of city teenagers have had very limited direct farm access, and some none at all. Rabobank’s Client Council network conveyed concerns about retaining and attracting youth within the agricultural industry, which prompted the study. Noosa and Kawana Farmers Markets director Shane Stanley doesn’t think the statistics are so bad on the Sunshine Coast and believes most local children have visited farms. But while he says it is likely most of them know about agriculture, it’s probably not enough. “I don’t think there’s enough education about farming in Australia – what it takes to grow on the farm right through to getting it to the store or markets, Stanley says. “People are totally disconnected from that process. However Stanley says he is working closely with the Noosa and Sunshine Coast councils to increase the focus on agriculture, grow the industry and educate people about its importance.

Paddock to plate

Almost 20 per cent of teenagers surveyed say they don’t know anything about how food gets from the farm to the plate, while 49 per cent

Rabobank’s Marc Oostdijk wants to bridge the urban-rural divide. admitted that they knew only a little. Oostdijk says while there is generally low awareness of the food production process among teenagers, it is more acute once produce and ingredients leave the farm. Stanley agrees, saying he has been particularly aware of the divide between farm and consumer in the city.

Perception of agriculture

While the survey shows considerable knowledge gaps in relation to agriculture, Oostdijk says it is encouraging that most urban teenagers surveyed perceive farming and food production as extremely or very important to Australia. “Pleasingly, 93 per cent had positive associations with farming, primarily around the themes of fresh food and agriculture being good for the local economy. “Negative associations were around issues like drought, low pay and animal management issues. However, careers in agriculture rated lower than many other professions among the survey participants with medicine and business rating highest.

Free cookbook University of the Sunshine Coast students have produced a cookbook to address the issue of food insecurity with healthy, affordable meals for young people on a budget. Most of the recipes in the cookbook cost less than $15 to make and include at least three types of vegetables and one source of meat or alternative protein. The book was handed out to students during Orientation Week and is available as an online document. USC’s nutrition and Dietetics program clinical placement trainer Angela Cleary says feedback shows healthy eating on a budget is still a concern for many students. “We know that students are at high risk of food insecurity due to their limited budgets and often their ability to cook as well,” Cleary says.

New USC students Mikarlah Hold and Michael Phillips, who grabbed a copy of the cookbook during Orientation Week.

“As a result, we made sure everything in the cookbook can be made with less than 10 ingredients and minimal skill.”

Work is underway on a new $23.7 million electricity substation at Birtinya to power the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital and medical precinct. Energy minister Mark McArdle says a secure and reliable electricity supply was essential to the success of the hospital project. “This new 60 megawatt substation will not only provide power to the new hospitals and medical hub, but in the future it will also supply neighbouring suburbs for the next generation of Sunshine Coast families,” McArdle says.

Situated 80 kilometres south of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea is one of the world’s smallest and most densely populated nations. Malta, with its hot, dry summers and mild winters, has a lot to offer tourists. Here are a few highlights.

1. Visit Valletta Built in the 16th and 17th centuries, Malta’s pint-sized capital is a fortif ed city with hundreds of monuments, all an easy walk from each other. The Upper Barrakka Gardens has spectacular views over the Grand Harbour, while the relatively plain exterior of St John’s Co-Cathedral belies its ornate interior. Stop by the historic City Gate and don’t miss the legendary Caffe Cordina, the city’s top people-watching spot since 1837.

2. Explore ancient temples Between them, Malta and Gozo are home to seven megalithic temples thought to be the oldest freestanding monuments in the world. Archaeology fans will enjoy visiting all six sites, which were added to the UNESCO World

Polo Trendline man. from

Islands. Once a haven for pirates, the tiny island is now regularly invaded by tourists who descend upon the Blue Lagoon. The spectacular cove is justif ably famous and great for snorkelling and sunbathing.

3. Go to Gozo

On Sundays, those in the know head to the village of Marsaxlokk on Malta’s south-east coast for the weekly f sh market. The best place to sample the island’s renowned lampuki (mahi-mahi) is Rising Sun, a family-run restaurant overlooking the harbour with the freshest catch at excellent prices. You can’t leave Malta without trying the ubiquitous street snack, pastizzi. Available from hole-in-the-wall pastizzerija joints, these small parcels of f aky pastry are f lled with ricotta cheese or mushy peas.

A 25-minute ferry ride from Malta, the sister island of Gozo is loved by divers, snorkellers and swimmers. Top spots to explore include the striking rock formations and turquoise bays around Dwejra on the west coast and the russet sands of Ramla Bay on the opposite side.

4. Check out Comino Situated between Malta and Gozo, car-free Comino is the smallest of the three Maltese

Luke Kitchin – Food and beverage manager at Maroochy Surf Club What’s your favourite go-to meal at home? A nice selection of cheeses to complement my glass of red after a hard day in the kitchen, while sitting out on my deck. What’s your favourite locally sourced produce and why? Fresh seafood. The quality of seafood we have on our doorstep is second to none. What’s the best advice you have been given? Never over-complicate the food you are preparing. Let the product speak for itself. Less is always more. What’s the strangest meal request you’ve ever had? My creation was a signature wagyu – Asian-infused wagyu rump cap, with sesame-crusted tiger prawns, sesame-glazed bok choy and spiced jus and the customer asked for it to be cooked very well done (like boot leather) served with two fried eggs sunny side up and tomato sauce. What do you enjoy most about working on the Sunshine Coast? Easy – the amazing people I’ve had the benefit of meeting and creating a united team. Also, the great scenery around the Coast, and the laidback lifestyle.

Spotting anxiety in kids before it gets out of hand

O

ne or two children in every Australian classroom is too anxious to enjoy life, says a professor who is concerned problems often go unnoticed by parents and teachers. Some children are overlooked because they are conscientious students and it is diff cult to know they are constantly worrying, says Ron Rapee, Professor of Psychology at Macquarie University. Common concerns include a fear of making mistakes, always being on time, family f nances, health, crime, friendships or being laughed at. The children might always expect the worst, suffer stomach pain and headaches and have trouble

Anxious children often exaggerate the danger or catastrophise the situation. We teach them to consider if there is evidence for what they are worrying about

If necessary, parents can ask a GP for a referral to a clinical psychologist or use Cool Kids resources to coach their own children. Children in Sydney can attend sessions at the centre. “Anxious children often exaggerate the danger or catastrophise the situation. We teach them to consider if there is evidence for what they are worrying about,” says Rapee. The program gets children to face their fears in a systematic way. “They gradually confront things they are fearful of.” However, it’s important for parents not to overreact to every child’s worries. “Anxiety is a natural emotion. All children will go through periods of being anxious. What we are looking for is where the anxiety goes on for long periods and where it interferes with a child’s life.” AAP

sleeping, says Rapee, who is director of the Centre for Emotional Health at the university. “But the strongest indicator of anxiety is avoidance,” he adds. “Most anxious children have a range of things that they just refuse to do. “The central problem is they fear people will think badly of them,” says Rapee, a who is running a workshop on childhood anxiety at a College of Clinical Psychologists Conference in Melbourne. His aim is to teach colleagues how to use the university’s Cool Kids program to help children aged seven to 17, and their families. Most anxious children can be helped, he says. Parents can start with basic common sense procedures, like talking to the child about the evidence for their worries and gradually encouraging the child to do the things they are afraid of doing, he says.

Count on BMW for a new level of luxury WORDS Peter Atkinson

T

he people at BMW seem to have developed their own form of mathematics. It goes something like this: 1, take away 3, equals 2. Or this: 3, take away 2, equals 4. Confused? It mightn’t make for perfect arithmetic, but the German brand’s new naming conventions for their range of sporty machines are a def nite plus for buyers. Call it addition by subtraction. It’s not that hard. Start with a 1-Series, take away three of its f ve-doors and you’ve invented the 2-Series coupe.

Same goes for the new 4-Series coupe (a 3-series sedan, minus two of its four doors). Of course, it’s always been a numbers game at BMW – from iconic machines like the classic 2002 turbo and legendary M3, right through to market favourites like the X5 and executive 7-Series. So there’s a certain logic that the car maker’s new two-door machines should bear even, rather than odd numbers on their name badge. It’s not just lip service. The all-new 2-Series, our test machine this week,

is much, much more than a 1-Series coupe with a new name. New from the ground up, it’s substantially bigger than the superseded model – 72 millimetres longer, 26 millimetres wider and f ve millimetres lower – meaning a sleeker, more substantial and more athletic looking machine. It will be initially offered in three models – four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol and diesel variants at the entry-level price, plus a f agship turbo six to add a performance halo. We drove the entry-level model, the 220i, powered by a turbo-charged two-litre engine and driven through a gloriously smooth eight-speed automatic transmission. At a tick over $50-grand plus on-road costs, it represents pretty smart value for those who fancy the famous propeller badge on their bonnet. Only the 1-Series hatch offers a cheaper way into the Bavarian brand, but the 2-Series feels a rung or two above its sibling in terms of luxury and quality f nishes. As we noted with the latest version of the 3-Series, BMW has deviated slightly from its legendary dynamics with this 2-Series. While still an impressively rewarding thing to drive, it doesn’t match the rock-solid handling and razor-sharp steering we’ve previously come to expect from this marque. Ride is marginally softer than how we remember the previous 1-Series coupe, and the steering noticeably lighter with not the same level of feedback. This, of course, is measuring the 2-Series against a very high standard. It’s still sporty and engaging, and the slightly more compliant ride no doubt will f nd favour among many who are looking for a sporty yet sensible car. In that regard, the 2-Series delivers brilliantly. Of course, you have the option of stiffening up the suspension via the Driver Experience

Control button on the centre console, which also adjusts transmission and throttle response. And, for the truly sportyminded, there’s the optional M-Sport suspension (standard on the higher-spec 235i model) that produces a lower stance and even smarter handling, but adds about $1500 to the price. The turbocharged four is a delightful engine, boasting impressive

torque lower in the rev range and a pleasing willingness to spin, and spin, into the higher echelons of its performance band. The eight-speed auto is a classleader and converts all that effort by the engine into seamless progression, whether under hard acceleration or just cruising along. Gearshift paddles on the chunky sports steering wheel give the driver the option of changing gears themselves, but it’s hardly necessary with a transmission as good as this one. The 220i cockpit is luxurious and ref ned – noticeably more so than the 1-Series – with lustrous polished timber f nishes, lashings of leather and judicious use of soft-touch surfaces. Equipment-wise, too, it more than meets the mark in this category. Automatic climate-control air, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming, 6.5-inch screen with satellite navigation and thermalglazed glass are standard. Buyers can choose from Sport Line or Modern Line trim levels, the former giving special upholstery

and interior trim f nishes, the latter delivering a more elegant f nish with matt aluminium and woodgrain highlights. Interior space in the 2-Series is remarkably good, with decent access to the two rear buckets and reasonable head and knee-room offered to rear seat passengers. Likewise, the boot space is not massive, but shaped well enough to be useful. Those features, are common to all three 2-Series models. What is not is the power delivered at the top of the family tree by the M235i – the newest member of the exclusive M club with a twin-turbo six-cylinder engine and full suite of performance gear. For the time being, at least, the 2-Series has no natural competitor in this guise. It takes the place of the astonishingly quick 1M coupe of the previous model. At $79,900 it’s almost $30-grand more expensive than its two siblings, but almost the same amount cheaper than the 1M. Now that’s the kind of subtraction that everybody will get to like.

BMW 220i Details: Two-door, four-seat premium small coupe with four-cylinder turbocharged engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. The RACQ is surprised at an increase in sales of large vehicles

Size does matter

N

ew car sales figures for 2014 have shown a remarkable move away from smaller cars, with more drivers opting to get behind the wheel of larger people movers, according to the RACQ. Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries statistics reveal sales of micro and light cars have dropped by as much as 33 per cent compared to the same time last year, while large vehicles and people movers up

by 15 per cent and 25 per cent respectively. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie says considering the soaring costs to run a vehicle in Queensland, the results are surprising. “It’s quite interesting to see drivers are still putting an emphasis on size of car rather than the economics,” Ritchie says. “With the cost of fuel continuing to rise, not to mention servicing costs, registration and insurance, it can be very expensive to keep a car on the road. “But if motorists are serious about tightening their family budget, downsizing to a smaller car makes a huge difference.” Ritchie says RACQ’s recent annual Vehicle Running Costs Survey found a micro vehicle can cost around $119 per week to run, versus a large car which can cost double that. “There are always a lot of factors to consider when choosing a new car, and ultimately it comes down to personal choice. But drivers who want to reduce their expenses should be seriously considering the overall running costs,” she says.

Trimming back on spending is helping many f rst-time investors realise their property ownership dreams.

T

he vast majority of first-time investors in Queensland say they would cut back on general day-to-day spending in order to afford an investment property, new research has revealed. According to Mortgage Choice’s latest First Time Investor survey, 71.9 per cent of Queensland respondents said one of the f rst things they would do is cut back on their spending in order to afford an investment property, while a further 53.3 per cent indicated they would “eat out less” and 23 per cent said they would cut back on “alcohol related spending”. Speaking about the results, local Mortgage Choice franchise owner Linda Ireland says it is possible for f rst-time buyers to save a signif cant amount of money and achieve their property ownership goals faster by simply cutting back on their day-to-day expenses. “There are lots of things potential buyers can do to reduce their daily spending,” Ireland says. “In fact, establishing good savings habits can be as simple as taking a back to basics approach. “When it comes to saving money, potential property investors should look to implement some tried and tested methods that can help them to get ahead without having to make extreme changes to their current way of life. In the f rst instance, it pays to build an achievable budget. Budgeting monthly or in accordance with the length of your pay period will allow you to amend your budget fairly quickly if an unexpected expense rears its ugly head.”

Once investors have a manageable budget in place, Ireland says there are a few other techniques they can implement to help them achieve their savings goal sooner rather than later. Mortgage Choice in Buderim offers the following savings tips for potential buyers who are looking to make their dream of property ownership a reality:

Become a VIP member – sign up to be a VIP member at your regular shopping spots. Whether this means you will get a few dollars off per ticket on a trip to the cinema, receive sale prices at your favourite clothing stores, or earn a supermarket discount voucher, every little bit counts.

Establishing good savings habits can be as simple as taking a back to basics approach Waste not, want not – eliminate some of the

little luxuries that you can do without. Try cutting back on takeaway coffees, fashionable items that have a short life-span, pay television, internet or data usage. You could even change your social plans and invite friends and family to get-togethers at your place, rather than going out where you will be tempted to spend more money.

Start making home-cooked meals

Ask for discounts – have you been a member

– rather than buying your lunch each weekday, why not prepare your own meals by making a weekly trip to the supermarket? If you are heading to the shops, it pays to have a shopping list and a full stomach – if you are hungry to begin with and don’t have a strict list in place, you may f nd you buy more than you need.

of your local gym for some time? If so, it may pay to give them a call and see if they can reduce your weekly fee for being a loyal customer. Of course, your gym isn’t the only place you can ask for discounts, try asking for a discount wherever you feel comfortable. After all, you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Get a savings enforcer – ask someone to

new land release at Stockland’s Brightwater at Mountain Creek will give buyers a rare opportunity to live on or close to the community’s centrepiece 12-hectare lake. The f rst stage of The Promontory release includes a set of waterfront lots overlooking Brightwater Lake and home sites located just a short stroll to the lake’s edge. The lakefront home sites range from 375 to 633 square metres and are priced from $309,000, while the dry lots range from 231 to 588 square metres and start at $175,100. All of the home sites have easy access to the rapidly growing Brightwater Market Place, the Brightwater Hotel, Brightwater State School, child-care facilities and parks with play equipment and barbecues facilities. Stockland regional manager Ben Simpson says the Promontory home sites will be ideal for buyers who

have a passion for living close to the water’s edge and pursing recreational water activities. “Buyers will be able to access a platform and ladder close to the new land release to launch their equipment, such as kayaks and stand-up paddles, into the Brightwater Lake,’’ he says. “The opportunity to build a new home on a lake or close to a lake on the Sunshine Coast is very rare. The fact that these lots are also located close to all the features and services of family-friendly Brightwater makes them even more appealing.” Simpson says Stockland’s commitment to delivering quality new home options to suit the widest possible budget and lifestyle needs were key factors for Brightwater’s popularity. “Buyers also like the design, landscaping, parks and recreational areas in the community plus the convenient location close to major facilities and beaches,’’ he says.

ARIES [March 21-April 20] If someone else is managing your money, then make sure you know exactly what’s going on. Your self-confidence takes a tumble on the weekend, when someone jumps to conclusions and criticises you unfairly. Avoid responding with sarcasm. Strive to shrug things off.

TAURUS [April 21-May 21] Communicating with others is complicated, as you go beneath the surface and get to the bottom of old issues. But if you are jealous or possessive, then you’ll find yourself deep in disagreement with a loved one. This weekend is a good time to cement a relationship.

GEMINI [May 22-June 21] Twins are curious creatures. If you want to achieve your goals then flash-in-the-pan plans are out and patient progress is in. You’re especially nosey this weekend. But, with Mercury squaring Mars, be careful that your motor mouth doesn’t get you into trouble!

18

19

CANCER [June 22-July 23] Are you trying to get closer to a child or teenager but they keep pushing you away? Patience and persistence are the keys to improving the relationship. Avoid the temptation to gossip. Zip your lip and find something constructive to do.

LEO [July 24-Aug 23] Leos love to pontificate, but this week heaps of hubris will land you in hot water. If you are too full of yourself, others will cut you down to size. Mercury favours lively conversation but avoid the temptation to monopolise social situations.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Mercury shifts into your solitude zone so it’s time to recharge your batteries and reflect on the future. Words of wisdom come from singer/songwriter Kate Bush: “There’s an awful lot you can learn about yourself when you’re alone.” On Sunday, avoid using words as weapons.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Your delicate diplomatic skills are needed early in the week, when you step in and play the peacemaker – but don’t get caught in the cross-fire! Your Libran elegance and timeless style is highlighted now. Your motto is from Yves St Laurent: “Fashions fade, style is eternal.”

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Early in the week, avoid using power games and emotional manipulation to get what you want. Cool compromise is the smart way to go. All eyes are on you at work this week. So make sure you are putting on a good show! If you’re looking for employment, cast your net wide.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Curiosity and optimism are high but don’t skim the surface. There’s more going on than you realise so investigate properly. This weekend, if you jump on your high horse, you’ll arouse the opposition of others. Spontaneous shenanigans could backfire badly.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Venus and Saturn rev up your relationship zone, which can signal heightened romance. But Uranus throws a curve ball, and a union heads off in an unexpected direction. It will be hard to balance your desire for commitment with the other person’s need for independence.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Rebellious behaviour will get you into trouble. You’re ambitious but think twice before you challenge authority figures or upset loved ones. Use diplomacy. Contributing to your local community turns into a win for everyone. The more you give, the more you’ll receive.

PISCES [Feb 20-March 20] Pliable Pisceans are perplexing at the best of times. Try to communicate clearly mid-week, otherwise confusion and monumental mix-ups are likely. The weekend is wonderful for romantic reveries and declarations of undying love – but don’t get too carried away.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

So this is the maths. Living in Australia compared with the rest of the world is a one in 300,000 chance. Living on the Sunshine Coast compared with the rest of the world is a one in 18 million chance. Yep, you have won life’s equivalent to Gold Lotto! Celebrate every day. So, stop and think! And get your butt out of bed and check the surf. Rewards are on offer. Looks like a small pulse is coming Saturday afternoon with a SW wind attached, so get amongst it. Quite a few Sunshine Coasters have been returning from G-Land having scored epic waves. A recent text I received boasted about 10 days at six-foot perfection. Remember, once ya dead, ya dead! Of course if you have any additional information please let me know!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Some of the biggest whiting I’ve seen have been taken this week around Goat Island with worms and yabbies best. These fish are all roed up ready to breed. Bream numbers are good on the rising tide along Bradman Avenue, with occasional fish over a kilo. The best baits are fowl gut and pilly pieces. Flathead are on the drift with lures and live bait best from Eudlo to Petrie creeks. SURF: Dart and sand whiting are in the low-tide gutters from Mudjimba to North Shore using beach worms and pippies. Find bream and chopper tailor at dawn and dusk with Pincushion and Alexandra Headland returning fish using pillies and mullet fillet. OFFSHORE: Most close-in reefs fire on the new and full moons for squire, sweetlip and parrot, but drop off in numbers in between the moons, so the wider grounds of the Barwon Banks and Wide Caloundra are the go. Remember, use plenty of berley. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon will be returning bass along the weed edges. Borumba Dam is also firing for bass and golden perch on either live shrimps or deep divers with some anglers nailing fish just as they push off the boat ramp. This also applies to Bjelke-Petersen Dam. Don’t forget your impoundment licence.
