egatrends. It’s a great word isn’t it? It promises so much. Sure, trends come and go, but megatrends; now these are life changing. Not content with the ordinary trends (facial hair, twerking, crop tops, comic book movies), at My Weekly Preview we are exploring trends of the large variety, and it’s got nothing to do with hair, clothes or f lm. Sam Walker is taking a look at the CSIRO’s Our Future World report, which explores global political, economic, social, environmental and technological forces that are set to shape the globe. Sam has been chatting to Dr Stefan Hajkowicz, who co-authored the report and will be speaking about it at a breakfast in Caloundra next week. It’s a fascinating topic, and if you want to stay ahead of the pack I’d suggest you head over the page. Speaking of all things trendy, Todd Widdicombe is back exploring new beer, over in my time on page 22. Todd enjoys a tipple, and a yarn, and it’s great to have him back in our magazine. In a change of pace, over in My Property Preview we have been down at the local bookshop and found seven books that all would-be property investors should read. And of course plenty of homes you can start investing in. That all starts on page 41. Finally this week, we have our special eight-page feature on the upcoming Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network’s annual awards. It’s that time of year when business women on the Coast celebrate other business women, and we have grabbed each of the 25 f nalists for a chat. There are some really inspiring women doing great work in our region and it’s such a pleasure to be involved in this event. Head over to page 30 Jemma Pearson for more.

THE SIX MEGATRENDS
I
t’s not a crystal ball – but it might be the next best thing. The CSIRO’s Our Future World report outlines six global megatrends that will change the way we live. These megatrends look at social, political, economic, environmental and technological changes that are expected to take place in the coming decades. How well we adapt to the future is likely to depend on our ability to grasp these concepts. CSIRO researcher in strategy and co-author of Our Future World Dr Stefan Hajkowicz says the report has a focus on businesses but is applicable across all aspects of community, government and lifestyle. It is written from an Australian perspective but details global forces expected to have major impacts in Australia over the next 20 years. “The biggest sort of drivers of change, I guess, for Australia are actually ones that come from outside the country,” Hajkowicz says.
opportunity & risK
So what are these forces and why should we be learning about them now?
“A megatrend is a significant shift in the business landscape and social landscape that puts it into a very different space, with either opportunity or challenge associated with it,” Hajkowicz says. “It can happen to your business gradually, over time. “It can be a change in technology, a change in social attitudes, consumer preferences, change in the environment, but a gradual change that happens to your business that either creates a big opportunity for you that you can harness or a big risk.” The six megatrends pertain to our finite resources; the rapid decline in biodiversity; the shifting world economy; our ageing population; advances in technology and digital connectivity and an increasing demand for more personal experiences. “I think in each of the megatrends are profound shifts for Australia that will create these opportunities and risks for us,” he says. Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Tourism and Events chair Bill Darby says the document has already helped shape the Regional Economic Development

Strategy for the Coast for the next 20 years. But he is excited that local businesses will get some detailed insights into what megatrends mean for the region when Hajkowicz addresses the Chamber’s Better Business Breakfast next week to talk about the opportunities and challenges likely to arise over the next two decades. Darby is thrilled that local businesses have access to such an important speaker. “He is probably the best credentialed speaker that the Chamber has ever been able to bring to the Coast.” While the document outlines some dramatic changes, Darby says Hajkowicz is not a fearist and locals should walk away with “some incredible insights that are relevant and sustainable”. “[It’s about] how the whole of society will be shaped into the future.” He says it will enable Coast businesses to capitalise on global megatrends now instead of waiting until it is too late. And there are several that particularly align to the Sunshine Coast.
The new Silk Road
One of the big changes is the shift in the world economy. “The centre of world economic activity used to be Europe and the United States … but Australia is lucky because the world economy is coming to us because of India and China, which are two large economies growing at six to nine per cent per annum compared to OECD countries at two to three per cent per annum,” Hajkowicz says. While connections are already being made with our Asian neighbours, Darby says the shift in economic power to our neighbourhood should open even more opportunities.
ageing assets
The Sunshine Coast has an ageing population – more so than many other regions – and Darby believes businesses will learn some positive

aspects along with some commercial opportunities, enabling them to capitalise on ageing in the future. The ageing population should be seen as an asset from which to draw a wealth of skills and knowledge. But there are also challenges ahead associated with healthcare and changes in demands for services and changes in the labour market.
eye on sustainability
Sustainability is already high on the agenda for the Sunshine Coast and Our Future World outlines the increasing importance to innovate and f nd new ways of making more with less. With a growing industry of clean technologies, it is a topic of signif cance to the region and an area of increasing interest and innovation. “We’re looking at how the Sunshine Coast can be the most sustainable region in Australia,” Darby says. It is a lofty aspiration, but opens the way for forward thinking businesses to create a new direction.
virtual reality
Not surprisingly, technology is going to be a big driver of change as we see exponential growth rates in digital technology and interconnectivity. “I think a lot of jobs we do today will disappear in tomorrow’s technologically advanced world and new ones will emerge,” Hajkowicz says. The jobs most at risk of becoming obsolete are those that can be replaced by technology and robotics, like data entry. And with advances in automated vehicles we are likely to see an increase in automatic cars, which can drive themselves and Hajkowicz says it is likely to put jobs like taxi drivers and delivery truck operators at risk. “The nature of jobs that will do well in
Bill Darby, Caloundra Chamber of Commerce
He is probably the best credentialed speaker that the Chamber has ever been able to bring to the Coast. It’s about how the whole of society will be shaped into the future tomorrow’s world will be those that are high creativity, high judgement, more complex problem solving – things that can’t so easily be replicated by a robotic device.” Darby says the Coast is already tapping into technological change with an increasing number of virtual businesses relocating to the area and as technology continues to advance, it is expected to open up more opportunities. continued over>

navigating the rip
In many ways, human beings are adaptable – just look at the technological advancements in the last century. But there are other factors that inf uence us. “A lot of challenges aren’t technological ones, they’re about governance systems and how human beings interact with each other,” he says. He cited examples of food security and food supply, which he attributes not so much to world shortages, but the way we distribute and share food and how it is governed. And while it might seem like a problem for other countries, he says the example of water management in the Murray Darling system is an illustration to how close to home this is.
Being in business is about reading the signals of change, and Hajkowicz says trying to f esh out plausible futures and potential changes will help businesses make better choices. He likens the megatrends to being caught in a rip and being dragged by the forces of change. You either drown in it or get swept along with your head above water until you are free of it and able to get back to shore. Even better is to understand the conditions and stay out of the rip. “I think knowing and understanding and having an awareness of these shifts in the environment that’s happening around you is always good to improve your own decision making,” he says. The question is whether we have the ability to adapt because Hajkowicz says where once it might have been a case of survival of the f ttest, future success will be about survival of the most creative and adaptable.
“Because we do have an ageing population, because we are focussed on developing our virtual businesses, spurred on by the Innovation Centre and the allied services in the new hospital,” he says. Our proximity to Asia and the relationships we are already fostering there along with the region’s dedication to clean technologies show we are already paving the way forward and showing our adaptability. Hajkowicz also sees positives in the decades ahead and opportunities that can be harnessed. “I’m mostly optimistic about

the future,” he says. “I think the future is a better space than the one of the past. It is a bit frightening but it is also fascinating and I hope to leave the audience with a sense of hope and fascination about what the future can hold as well. “And also a sense that we can collectively get together and make the future happen the way we want it to. We don’t just have to accept a future that’s happening to us. “Part of our job is to describe the future but part of society’s job is to start to make a choice about what kind of future it wants.”

Forum promotes diversity
F
aith and cultural diversity will be at the centre of a hypothetical discussion at the University of the Sunshine Coast tomorrow. Dozens of USC students and staff from different countries and cultures are expected to join a dynamic public forum, where at least six local religious leaders will debate the issue of diversity across our region at the Sunshine Coast Interfaith and Multicultural Hypothetical Forum (and Cafe). USC lecturer in sociology Dr Phillip Ablett says the university is delighted to host the forum, one of six regional events to be held at various universities in the lead-up to a debate in Brisbane during Queensland Cultural Diversity Week in September. “There will be opportunities for discussion on what cultural diversity means on the Sunshine Coast today and where it might

Dr Phillip Mahnken, USC Indonesian specialist lead in future,” Ablett says. “We’re inviting all the major faith and cultural groupings on the Coast, community and political leaders.” Conf rmed so far are Jewish Rabbi John D Cooper, Sensei Barry Farrin from the Forestway Zen Buddhist Centre, USC’s Indonesian specialist Dr Phillip Mahnken and representatives from Muslim,
Christian, Baha’i and Indigenous communities. They will discuss a hypothetical topic set in the year 2020, when Malcolm Turnbull is Prime Minister, state governments have been dissolved and the Sunshine Coast has been sequestered as a region for the formation of a “diversity metropolis”. “It’s designed to stimulate discussion and is particularly f tting given USC’s inclusive campus, with more than 69 cultures represented in our student population,” Ablett says. “The Sunshine Coast region has become more diverse since I came here in 1997 and USC is a major contributor with its international and exchange students, and staff.” The forum, which includes morning tea, will be launched by Queensland’s minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes, and has support from the USC Vice-Chancellor’s Off ce. The forum series is an initiative of the Griff th University Centre for Interfaith and Multicultural Dialogue.
The forum is open to the public. Prospective participants can register on the day or email pablett@usc.edu.au.

Scholarship fosters talent Applications are open for The Events Centre Caloundra’s annual performing arts scholarship. The $2500 scholarship will help a young Coast student towards their future study in performing arts. The centre has provided f nancial support for seven talented local students since 2008 to help them pursue their goal of having a career in the arts. The scholarship is designed to provide support for second-year students enrolled in a full-time tertiary level course in performing arts in 2015. “The Sunshine Coast has an abundant wealth of creative youth and this scholarship recognises the importance of fostering local talent to achieve their ambitions as a performer or arts worker,” says The Events Centre general manager Gary Mears. “The Events Centre is a hub for nurturing and presenting cultural development opportunities including performing arts programs for children, youth and seniors.”

HEARING LOSS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED At EARS we are pioneers of the latest hearing technology. We are currently offering free of charge trials of the Phonak Lyric hearing aid. As the only hearing practice on the Sunshine Coast accredited and experienced in f tting this revolutionary product, we are now looking for volunteers with a hearing loss to come and try this breakthrough completely invisible, natural sounding technology with us.
Who can apply: Any Sunshine Coast resident aged 25 years or younger, who will be or has been, accepted for admission to the second year at a full-time accredited tertiary course in performing arts in 2015.
The trial is completely free of charge and without obligation and you will be helping us to learn and study this unique proposition in our local community. If you are able to help us with this project, please call us and we will arrange an appointment.

Why Valdora is a good idea Mayor Mark Jamieson sets the record straight on the Sunshine Coast Council’s involvement with the proposed solar farm at Valdora and why he wants his council to explore the solar option.
T
here’s been a lot of talk about council’s exciting proposal to build a solar farm at Valdora, which will save many millions of dollars on electricity and take us closer to becoming Australia’s most sustainable region. Let me show you how we got there. In June 2011 council approved a utility-scale solar farm with appropriate conditions. Following
that planning approval, council was approached to become a customer of the proposed solar farm, but the cost was far too high. But council liked the idea of ‘green power’, and further analysis showed if it owned the project the organisation could save millions of dollars on electricity. The reason? Council could cut out the middle man and eliminate the biggest risk – the need for a customer. Council could be its own customer. The f ndings were presented to council in January 2013, and more information was requested. This additional material and a detailed business case were presented to council in April 2013 – they showed signif cant savings over the life of the project. Council started an expression of interest for the construction of a solar farm, and entered into an option on the project and property.
This option cost council $300,000, along with monthly rental payments of $8000 per month. The option gave council the legal right to
A solar farm at Valdora will save many millions of dollars on electricity and take us closer to becoming Australia’s most sustainable region purchase the parcel of land for a period until February 2014 at a cost of $1.5 million. This amount was set under an existing option to purchase the land. The location of the land was critical and can’t be over-emphasised. A substantial investigation
revealed this plot had all the necessary characteristics to build a utility-scale solar farm, including the fact it was located on a 33kv Energex line. Across the region there are very few land parcels that meet the criteria. This clearly placed the value of the land – as a potential site for a solar farm – much higher than other rural parcels of land, to which some people have tried to compare it. As the old real estate saying goes: location is everything. Despite having a comprehensive report and business case, and the option on one of the few suitable blocks in the region, council took additional measures to ensure it was making the right decision. Council engaged two f rms to undertake an independent assessment of the business case. Armed with these two reports, a

study undertaken by Energex, and taking into consideration potential future legislative changes – the business case was substantially amended – it differs greatly from the original which has been cited to criticise the project. The amended business case delivers a much better result for council and the community. In parallel with this work the expression of interest process was completed. A large number of responses were received from local, national and international companies. Most importantly, council now had large volumes of reliable information to f nalise the business case. This revised business case was presented to council in February 2014 and council made the decision to pay $2.3 million, which was the substantial cost to develop the project plan as well

as the intellectual property. It’s important to note that overall cost of $4,156,000 (including the $2.3 million, land for $1.5 million, $300,000 option and rent payments totalling $56,000) has been factored into the business case, which shows council and therefore ratepayers will be way ahead – the savings will be many millions of dollars. There are some contractual matters which prevent me going into more depth in some areas, but I hope this provides a good insight into why council has gone solar. Ultimately, council faced a decision – take an opportunity to reduce electricity costs for the next 30-plus years and achieve a great environmental outcome, or continue to pay ever-escalating electricity costs. Like many residents council chose solar power and the savings it will bring.

Two TAFE Queensland East Coast students have been selected to showcase their upcoming graduate collections at the Peregian Beach Food and Fashion Fiesta next week. Participating f nal year fashion student Yasmin Bridges says she started working on designing her graduation pieces in May and is focussing on the process of production and pattern making. Her business Awkward Chat features clothes ethically sourced and made from recycled materials. One of her pieces being modelled at the Fiesta is partly made from the cover of a director’s chair. “My philosophy is no matter how awkward it is, let’s initiate and encourage conversations about where our purchases come from: how are the earth and its inhabitants treated?” she says. “I’ve loved the sustainable focus at this TAFE – I was really pleasantly surprised and didn’t expect it. “We’ve made a few recycled garments and a lady came and showed us weaving, so it’s been

Clare Faulds will also have her major assessment creations shown at the Fiesta and says she is designing clothes for middle aged women to feel comfortable in without being frumpy or too skimpy. The event is being hosted by the Lions Club Peregian and Peregian Beach Business Association. Fashion teacher Amanda Knights says the two students were selected to participate in the Fiesta because they’re both very driven and have goods out there for sale.

I was in church recently, one of those high-f ve-for-Jesus type get-ups, and the bloke was talking all things the Bible. He mentioned how he loved a beer and wondered if Jesus and his mates were partial to the amber. I mean his old man, God, must’ve desired a cold one after he created the earth and the skies in six days. Whenever I’ve built a trampoline for the kids or put a bike together on Christmas Eve, it’s easily a three- or four-can job. Surely the creation gig was a keg and a half! I’d go as far to suggest on the seventh day he parked himself at the bar to rest, only getting up to collect his parmi and chips from the bistro. Of course, it’s well documented that Jesus had a knack for turning
water into wine, making him a handy lad to invite to your 21st, but there’s no mention of beer. Although, I reckon beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Having said that – it’s all in moderation, people. The brew of the week is the very decent Cricketers Arms Lager. Originally sold as a gimmick in the Prince of Wales Hotel in St Kilda, Cricketers, as it’s affectionately known, has grown to be one of Victoria’s premier beers and is making a solid name for itself here. The key to Cricketers is it is brewed longer using sun-dried Aussie malt to create a full-f avoured extra dry lager that’s sure to win fans in sessional drinkers. Cricketers pours a nice golden colour with plenty of
froth while the Amarillo hops add a slight citrus vibe to the aroma and taste. It’s a good value-for-money pale lager you’ll enjoy whether it’s Friday night footy, ya niece’s christening or nan’s 80th. And keep an eye out for The Cricketers Mid On Golden Ale, a cracking mid-strength alternative.

THAI COOKING TIPS
from Amytis Garden
CHOCOLATE FIX • It takes about 400 cacao beans to make 450 grams of chocolate. • Dark chocolate is made from the roasted beans of the cacao tree and has less sugar and dairy than other chocolate. • White chocolate does not contain any cocoa solids or cocoa liquor so it is not really chocolate. • The smell of chocolate is said to increase theta brain waves, which trigger relaxation. • Cocoa originated in the Americas but today the majority of the world’s cocoa comes from West Africa. • It was originally consumed as a cold drink made from crushed beans by the Mayans and Aztecs. • Many chocolate products contain palm oil. • Not all chocolate is ethical with many children aged between five and 17 forced to work on cocoa farms in Ghana and Ivory Coast.
The great thing about Thai food is it’s cheap and easy to make at home. If you prepare your meat and veg in advance, it can be a quick family meal to put together after a busy day. If you make a large batch of curry it will keep in your freezer up to six months. Did you know you can even freeze your rice in with your meal portions or separately?

LET THE SUNSHINE Maleny Players will present David Williamson’s satirical comedy Let the Sunshine at The Events Centre Caloundra for one night only in September. It explores the emotions and conversations that arise when people of widely different political values are thrown together. It is set in highly charged political times from the election of Kevin Rudd, through to the GFC and beyond. This provides fertile ground for arguments and disagreements on a range of highly contentious issues. Fuelling this volatile mix are family dilemmas that audiences will easily relate to, all delivered with Williamson’s sarcasm and wit. Let the Sunshine will be performed for one night on Saturday September 13 at The Events Centre, Caloundra at 7.30pm. Tickets $32, concession $28.

Tom Szaky, the CEO of TerraCycle, is the keynote speaker at Accelerating Your Business hosted by small business minister Jann Stuckey at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday. Stuckey says Szaky, whose business has been called the

The Sunshine Coast Business Enterprise Centre will hold a two-day open house and businesses are encouraged to register for it. Enterprise Centre managing director Rod Richards says the organisation recognises the role small business plays in the Queensland economy. “We have experts providing one-on-one mentoring on f nances, marketing, planning, innovation
and cyber security, Richards says. “This is a great opportunity for small business to get information or advice to keep them motivated and improve their business. Caloundra Chamber of Commerce executive off cer Leanne Layf eld says the majority of their 350 members are small businesses, which has prompted the chamber to support and host two events during the week. And while most businesses set up their off ce and their staff with everything they need, Joyce Mayne Maroochydore computer franchisee Jeffrey Commisso says many don’t think to lease their equipment. But with technology rapidly evolving and a constant stream of faster, smaller, lighter and cheaper devices hitting the market, renting can be a more practical solution.
“Yes, it does cost more than paying cash for it because it’s a lease, Commisso says. But the advantages are many. Renting your technology can be far more tax effective than buying outright. You can usually claim your items as a 100 per cent tax deduction if they are used 100 per cent for business purposes but check with your accountant f rst.
Commisso says items are usually covered by insurance. For those who love to have the latest technology, renting is a great way to keep up-to-date. Just back up your data to the cloud, return the old equipment and walk out with something new. “Leasing makes it easy to get the items you need to keep your small business growing.

Mentoring for Investment Sunshine Coast Council has partnered with the Queensland Government to deliver support programs for local high growth businesses. The Mentoring for Investment program matches innovative businesses which are looking to raise capital with specialist volunteer business mentors. A panel of volunteer business leaders and professionals from the finance and investment industry provide their knowledge and expertise to assist companies with their investment strategy and pitch. Mentoring for Investment is based on the Queensland Government’s successful Mentoring for Growth program. If you are a business looking for support or would like to know more about the Mentoring for Growth and Investment programs, please visit www.business.qld.gov.au/mentoring or send an enquiry to m4g@dtesb.qld.gov.au. Barry Sheridan from Seniors Wellbeing Ltd, a participating company, said: “The program provided me with a great opportunity to present to a panel of investment mentors and gain feedback on areas for improvement in my presentation and investment strategy. It helped prepare me for the tough capital raising environment that I am entering”.

ou have registered your business name, created a logo and set up a domain name. Your doors are open and your business is up and running. But is that enough? Let’s talk trademarks. Geosys owner Geoff Moller from Buderim specialises in helping businesses to register trademarks and says a lot of people underestimate or don’t understand the importance of registering their intellectual property as trademarks. “There’s a misconception that having a business name or a company name or a domain name actually grants them rights to own that name.” Moller says. “Having a trademark is the only way you can protect the intellectual property around that name. “Another thing with a trademark is it’s designed to protect the look and feel of a brand, whether that brand is a business name or company name or product or service, to stop the consumer being confused between brand A and brand B.” It is best to check that your brand can be registered as a trademark before going ahead with your designs and business names. But it is not just your branding you need to think about, it is also your products and everything
associated with your business. “A person might have a trademark over a business name but they might also have several products which could become valuable assets and so they should be protected by a trademark too,” Moller says. The danger of not registering a trademark for these things is that another business might already have trademarked them and you are infringing on their rights. Or someone might trademark them after you have established your business and put your products and services in the marketplace. Both can be costly. The value of your intellectual property or a trademark can grow over time and Moller recommends including IP as a heading in your business plan to help this process. IP Australia advises businesses to think twice about marketing your business, products and services before you have protected yourself. Each type of intellectual property has a range or criteria that must be met for a right to be granted. Most registered IP rights have eligibility criteria stating the IP must be ‘new’ and never disclosed or revealed in public. If you have publicly disclosed your design, new invention or plant
Sweet win for Hive Haven There was a buzz at the final of the Innovation Centre’s annual Business Pitch competition, with Beerburrum beekeepers winning the contest’s Concept category. Ann and Jeff Ross impressed the judges with their ‘show me the honey’ pitch, which outlined their plans to use recycled plastic to produce innovative beehives designed to deter disease and pests like the deadly small hive beetle. The couple have been testing their hives for eight months and are about to enlist Queensland Professional Beekeepers Association members to do further f eld testing before they begin production. There’s a misconception that having a business name or a company name or a domain name actually grants them rights to own that name variety before applying for registration you may have lost your ability to protect it. Recognition for a job well done
M
y Weekly Preview is again proud to be the media partner of the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network annual awards, which is now in its 16th year. This weekend, hundreds of members of the business community, including the 25 f nalists, will gather for the gala awards dinner, where f ve women will receive the highly contested awards of young, micro/small, corporate, professional and outstanding business woman. In the past 15 years, the awards have been a launchpad for many of its winners, who have received other prestigious awards including
becoming f nalists and winners in the national Telstra Business Awards. But even for those f nalists who don’t win, the achievement of just making it to the f nals is a huge achievement, which can prove to be life-changing. Past winners include The Gluten Free Grain Free Co’s Tania Hubbard, 4 Ingredients owner Kim McCosker, Mortgage Choice’s Linda Ireland, Changing Habits author, speaker and nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara, architect Lindy Atkin and dozens of other women from all walks of life and in a wide range of industries. The award judges have a huge task on their hands. Chair of
judging Vicki Clark tells MWP that this year’s 25 f nalists were chosen from 140 women who were nominated. The judges, she says, are not looking for a woman who is merely successful in business. “We look for someone who will able to represent the network in the community. We want to know about their story. How successful their business is, but also the journey is the big thing,” Clark says. She adds that the judges ask, is this woman able to inspire other women? “It is also about representing the network and being able to mentor others.” It seems there is no end to the talented women that each and every year make it to the judges’ attention for the awards. The network consistently has dozens and dozens of nominees to choose from.
“I think it is that the network is very prestigious,” Clark tells MWP. “The people who have won it previously have gone on to do amazing things. People see it as an opportunity. It has shown time and again that it has opened doors.” She says the partnerships they build with other women involved in the awards is incredibly valuable. The awards are given further prestige by the incredibly rigorous judging process. “The judging process is one of the best I have seen with six independent people, it has such honesty and integrity.” Clark adds, “We get a lot of comments – even without winning it gives them pause to ref ect on their achievements. Because they all lead busy lives they don’t get a chance to stop and think about it.” But this weekend there will be plenty of time to ref ect on those achievements.
What the judges say Chair of judging for the 2014 Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Vicki Clark shares these judges’ comments with MWP: “Seemingly ordinary, everyday business women have quite extraordinary, special and surprising stories to tell.” “It borders on unbelievable the great work the f nalists are doing. I clearly observed some world-best practices.” The judges also said they were incredibly impressed with the diversity of the backgrounds of the women and their “overwhelming passion and dedication to work while balancing life was inspirational”.

What do you love about your job? I love being creative and innovative with our products, by listening, researching and utilising our team of taste testers (human and animal). I love that our training treats and gourmet treats for both horses and dogs can help build a better bond between an animal and owner. What people inspire you? Those who manage to juggle their family and business in a balanced, honest, positive and humble way. Advice for other women starting out in business? Say yes to all opportunities even if they seem too big at the time as that is what enables growth and productivity. You just have to have a can-do attitude and be able to survive a few sleepless nights.
What do you love about your job? I love the lasting friendships I’ve made with my overseas business colleagues, the local people and the wonderful artisans, chefs and tour operators I work with on the Coast. Advice for other women starting out in business? My advice is to always keep focussed on why you are passionate about your business, why you will be successful, and why your business is different. Aligning yourself with a mentor is extremely important when starting out in business as the guidance and encouragement they can give you will be invaluable not only when you f rst start out in business, but throughout the development of achieving business success.
What people inspire you? My parents. My father was a Ten Pound Pom, and one of 10 siblings who immigrated to Australia nearly 60 years ago. My mother was abandoned by her father when she was just 13, and together with her own mother, worked long hours in menial jobs to support the other children in the family. The ability of my parents to overcome these challenges; to work hard and to instil the values of family; and of honest, hard work in myself and my f ve sisters, is truly inspirational. Advice for other women starting out in business? Don’t be afraid to take the leap. Believe in yourself and your abilities. There are always rewards that follow hard work.
What people inspire you? People who care enough about making a difference in the community they live in. As a board member of local charity SunnyKids, I would def nitely say the dedicated staff and community who give and help the kids, and families that desperately need support. The staff go above and beyond their duties to help their clients. Also the staff at Suncoast Care, another organisation on the Coast that gives to the homeless and people in need. Advice for other women starting out in business? Have a good team around you, staff, advisers, and have good systems in place. Plus remember, you have to make time for yourself away from work as well. Work life balance!

What do you love about your job? The freedom of being able to choose my own hours, being creative and seeing people wearing my products. Name the three key factors for your success: Dedication, excellent customer service and a never-say-die attitude. What people inspire you? As a person, Richard Branson. In general I am inspired by motivated, positive, dedicated, punctual and trustworthy people. Advice for other women starting out in business? They should know that there is no elevator to success – you have to take the stairs. This is my favourite and most accurate business quote of all time.

What do you love about your job? Showing people they are capable of amazing things they didn’t know were possible. The look on clients’ faces when they realise, after years of struggling with f nances, and stressing about how they could ever retire comfortably, that it really can be done easily, is priceless. Name the three key factors for your success: The right people – surrounding yourself with the right people accelerates your success. The right business ethos – if you plan to give more than you take, success can’t help but arrive. Attracting the right clients – knowing who you can help and who you can’t enables you to meet client expectations without ever disappointing.
What do you love about your job? I love to see students grow into exciting new career opportunities. Being involved in education is extremely rewarding and fulf lling. The pleasure you receive from helping others succeed is amazing. What people inspire you? The person that comes to mind who has achieved so much in a short amount of time would be Janine Ellis, founder and franchisor of Boost Juice. What I love about Janine’s story is that she started from nothing. Janine was prepared to get her hands dirty. Advice for other women starting out in business? Take a chance, give it 150 per cent and don’t look back.
What do you love about your job? I love that I am able to support others to become conf dent and encouraging them to succeed and be the person they want to be. What people inspire you? I am inspired by Telstra Business Centre owners James Fountain and Vicki Christie. They are very hands-on business owners, but they make time for family. They appear very fair, intelligent and relaxed with a big emphasis on goal setting for targets and outcomes. They have implemented an incentive scheme accessible to all staff. Working with their strengths and knowing how to f ll their gaps with the right people – they have created a business model that is a credit to them.

Name the three key factors for your success? Being passionate. Being proactive. Being a team player. Advice for other women starting out in business? Don’t give up – the beginning is always the hardest. Focus on your strengths and delegate your weaknesses. Be entrepreneurial – understand a market, see a need and develop a solution. Be resilient – embrace failure, embrace feedback, keep going. Be driven by your vision. Employ and upskill young people and women in business. Prepare yourself for making decisions as you’ll make a lot. Understand what it is to be a leader and make the best of these qualities – empathy, social connection and feminine strength.
What people inspire you? Nelson Mandela once said, “If you learn you teach, if you get you give”. I f rmly live by this principle and implore others to do the same. What goes around comes around – be generous and be the best form of you, you can be. We live in such a generous community and I am awed by how much support many businesses provide to those in need. Advice for other women starting out in business? Make sure you are the leader in your f eld, understand who your market is, what’s your unique point of differentiation, deliver superior customer service by genuinely taking an interest in your clients and do it with passion. Start your business with your exit strategy.

An Italian supercar for mere mortals WORDS Peter Atkinson
W
e’d all love to drive an Italian supercar – like a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Few of us will ever get the chance. But the third of Italy’s most celebrated marques has suddenly moved within reach of we mere mortals. Well, almost. Maserati has taken a giant step toward the mainstream with the launch of its stunning new executive-sized sports sedan, the Ghibli. A massive hand grenade has been thrown into the executive market with a stunning, surprising machine that lowers the entry price to the Maserati brand by almost half. Of course, it won’t come close to matching the sales numbers of the Germans (and Jaguar), but the Ghibli will certainly steal some of their buyers and is set to launch Maserati into uncharted waters in terms of sales volumes and market penetration. In its centenary year, Maserati has embarked on the most ambitious and far-reaching expansion in the marque’s history, with a f ve-year strategy to grow global sales from about 6000 in 2012 to almost 75,000 per year by the end of the decade. It started last year with the release of the new Quattroporte – Maserati’s high-performance luxury doubling the company’s sales to 13,000 last year. But those sales will be dwarfed by the predicted success of the Ghibli and projections for Maserati’s f rst-ever SUV model, the Levante, which arrives in Australia in 2016.
Between them, the Ghibli and Levante are expected to account for global sales upwards of 50,000. Maserati predicts that by 2017 it will sell 1500 vehicles in Australia, which dwarfs the 134 sales it made last year. Australia plays a surprisingly large part in Maserati’s growth plans. It is the seventh-largest buyer of Maseratis globally. And there’s more to come – the two-seat Alf eri sports car in 2017; an Alf eri Spyder in 2018 and, in 2019, a replacement for the GranTurismo and GranCabrio luxury coupes. They are already calling the Ghibli the most important vehicle in the company’s history. At its national launch this month on the twisty, hilly roads of the Queensland and NSW border, this shapely machine more than lived up to the hype. The Ghibli will initially be offered in three variants – an entry-level model with twin turbocharged V6 engine; a Ghibli S with a higher-
output version of the same powerplant; and a Ghibli Diesel with three-litre, twin turbo oil-burner boasting a hefty 600 Newton metres of torque, 201 kilowatts and frugal 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres thirst. All models will feature a version of the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission found in the bigger, more luxurious Quattroporte, each calibrated to the various engine outputs and characteristics. The slick auto can be switched to any of f ve modes. In full attack mode, throttle response is sharpened, exhaust baff es opened to deliver a throatier engine note, and downshifts are greeted with a blip from the throttle. The bark from the quad exhausts is bound to attract attention. It’s the price, though, that will cause the biggest stir in this hotly-contested category. The Ghibli Diesel will retail for $138,990; the standard V6 $1000 more than that and the f agship Ghibli S, with more performance and equipment, at a still-intriguing $169,990.

[ The Ghibli is a glorious looking machine. While ref ecting the muchcelebrated lines of the Quattroporte, it features a more sporty, muscular stance – more typical of Maserati’s GranTurismo coupe with high shoulder-line, elongated bonnet and pert, sculpted rear end. Despite those seductive lines, the Ghibli is remarkably practical inside. There’s ample space for full-sized adults front and rear and the boot meets the obligatory “two sets of golf clubs”. Apart from those big, shapely C-pillars, there’s decent visibility all-round. The cockpit screams class and exclusivity, too. It is beautifully designed and boasts a bespoke f nish that’s a half-rung above its German and Jaguar arch-rivals. Despite the huge variance in price, there are many similarities with the Quattroporte. They share quite a bit of chassis architecture, but the Ghibli is 173 millimetres shorter at the wheelbase and almost 300 millimetres shorter overall; plus about 50 kilograms lighter than the Quattroporte.
Buyers will have the choice of a range of leathers, wood or carbon trims and massive array of colour combinations – from interior trim to the colour of the brake calipers. Maserati says cars can be customised to a buyer’s specif cation as little as three weeks before they begin their journey down the Turin factory production line. The cabin features supple leather on seats, door trims and dash; brilliant attention to detail in instruments and switchgear, plus a vivid, easy-to-use touch screen to control most cabin functions. The growl from the petrol V6 on our launch drive (we tested the
f agship S model) provides an appropriate soundtrack to a very sporty, focused driving experience. It turns with prodigious grip and delivers the kind of poise and balance you’d expect of a machine with this pedigree. However, the rough, pock-marked surfaces of our test route exposed its lack of aff nity for unmade roads, thanks partly to its massive 20-inch alloy wheels and low-prof le tyres and partly to the f rm suspension settings of the Ghibli. On the smoother, sweeping roads the Maserati was in its element. It would be a wonderful way to cover a long journey – and equally enjoyable on the morning city commute. The performance numbers of both the S and the V6 are formidable and its likely that at least one V8-engined Ghibli, and probably a more powerful diesel variant, will emerge over the next year or two.

Small car makes a big impact
W
hen the first classic Mini, made in England, went on the market on August 18 1959, it’s unlikely those involved imagined the revolutionary small car would turn into such a global success. But as it celebrates its 55th birthday, the little car is still going strong. Two models were originally presented to the public, which differed solely in their radiator grille, hub caps and paint f nishes – the Morris Mini Minor and the Austin Seven. Designer Alec Issigonis’ concept was simple and ingenious – lots of
interior space combined with minimum exterior dimensions, four seats, perfect driving properties, low fuel consumption and a reasonable price. These brilliant ideas had an impact that was to extend into the 21st century. The brand’s underlying principle was conf rmed once more when it was restarted with the market launch of the MINI in 2001, which started a new wave of fans around the globe.

Driven to distraction The state’s peak motoring body has called on motorists to keep their eyes on the road, after research revealed the majority of Queenslanders believe driver distraction is a growing problem. More than 90 per cent of motorists surveyed by RACQ said it was a bigger issue now than it was f ve years ago, and nearly 40 per cent said mobile technology such as smartphones were to blame. RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie says it is concerning nearly one quarter of members admitted to getting distracted by a hand-held mobile phone while driving. “Hand-held mobile phone use is unsafe and illegal. If you must use your mobile and you don’t have hands-free, it is imperative you pull over, Ritchie says. “It’s not worth risking your life or the lives of others to answer a phone call or read a text message while driving. “We’re also concerned that half of those surveyed admit to losing focus on the road while adjusting
the car stereo, and 45 per cent while eating and drinking. “Distraction contributes to around one quarter of car crashes, so it’s vital motorists become more aware of the risks. Driver distraction is included as one of the fatal f ve key causes of crashes, in addition to speeding, fatigue, alcohol and drugs, and not wearing seatbelts.

SEVEN OF THE BEST Want to get on the path of property investment but don’t know where to begin? Head to the bookshop, and pick up one or all of these much-loved, and very helpful, reads.
Rich Dad Poor Dad Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad Poor Dad highlights the different attitudes to money and work of two men who inf uenced the author’s life. Kiyosaki believes a high income does not guarantee f nancial security and says f nancial independence comes when your asset income exceeds monthly expenses. The international bestseller, written in anecdotal style, is the complete how-to guide in personal f nance. A must-have to get you interested in f nances.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Stephen R Covey Written in an anecdotal and insightful style, management guru Covey offers key principles that provide the ability to adapt and change. First published in 1989, 7 Habits provides a step-by-step guide on how to live with fairness, integrity, service and dignity. Applicable to the business and property worlds, the bestseller gives a well-rounded and cohesive principal-based approach to get you in the mindset.
Australian property investor Michael Yardney shares the lessons he has learned in Rules of Property. With the property market picking up, Yardney urges buyers to take advantage and provides a road map of principles, strategies and concepts for successful investment. Designed for beginners and seasoned property investors, this plain English guide gives 56 rules to help you move forward in the investment game.
Winning Property Tax Strategies Julia Hartman and Noel Whittaker Whittaker, the author of 17 bestselling books, teams up with tax expert Julia Hartman for their second guide. Primarily addressing taxation issues, the book is aimed at property owners and investors. Its purpose is to help you identify an opportunity and recognise bad advice. If you have a tax-related question regarding property ventures this is a handy resource and reference tool.
From 0 to 130 Properties in 3.5 Years Steve McKinght
How to Achieve Property Success Margaret Lomas
The Richest Man in Babylon George Samuel Clason
McKnight discusses how he bought 130 properties in three-and-a-half years and generated hundreds of thousands of dollars of income in doing so. The Melbourne property investor shows how to be f nancially independent by creating a positive cashf ow while protecting your wealth. As Australia’s highest-selling real estate book, this is a read suitable for newcomers and advanced property investors.
A best-selling author of several books on property, Lomas has more than 20 years’ experience working with and advising property investors. Presented by levels of experience, the book provides the basics for buying property, detailed information about selling real estate and also discusses complex matters including superannuation funds. It’s a comprehensive handbook for property success.
Set in ancient Babylon, this classic tale dispenses f nancial advice that is timeless. The story’s characters learn simple f nancial lessons through mistakes and triumphs. Selling millions of copies since it was f rst published in 1926, the book f rst began as informational brochures distributed by banks and insurance companies. An easy read with tried-and-true lessons for accumulating wealth.

TAURUS [April 21-May 21] Home is where the heart is this week, as you nurture loved ones and get stuck into all sorts of overdue domestic chores. Find creative ways to make your home more happy and harmonious. The new moon energises your entertainment/ hobby zone.
GEMINI [May 22-June 21] A spontaneous conversation and unexpected news leads to an action-packed week. You’re keen to communicate with a wide range of people at work and within your local community. Expect your home life to be bustling with people coming and going.
CANCER [June 22-July 23] You’ll feel moody this week, as the stars stir up emotions and your crab defenses go up. Don’t take things too personally. What others say isn’t necessarily what they mean, so think things through before you jump in and over-react.
LEO [July 24-Aug 23] Has your enthusiasm for a domestic project taken a nosedive? Contributing your talents brings satisfaction. But you’re susceptible to false flattery on Saturday so don’t be talked into doing something you really don’t want to do.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] You start the week with motivation levels high, and you power through projects with extra vigour. But then things slow down and you switch into procrastination mode. Heed Mother Teresa: “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.”
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Are you expecting money to land in your account? Some Librans will experience delays, as Saturn slows down financial transactions. Others will find themselves with expenses. Attached lovers: your partner could surprise you with a gift or intriguing proposal.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Early in the week feels like one step forwards and two steps back as Saturn dampens enthusiasm, delays projects and stymies progress. But with a slow and steady Scorpio approach you’ll get there. Expect some confusing conversations on Saturday.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Are you bored at work? Fresh professional pastures are calling! With Mercury moving through your career zone (until September 2), strive to communicate your credentials and numerous talents to a wide audience, both in person and online.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] You’re incredibly busy but don’t neglect the personal touch. If you are too business-like you may find yourself left out of the loop. And is there a personal problem you’re stressing about? Rather than obsessing, talk things through with a trusted friend.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] The new moon always indicates a shift of gear in an important area of life. This week the heavens signal a fresh start for Aquarians involving an intimate relationship or money matters. If you are attached, your partner may surprise you with an unusual request.
PISCES [Feb 20-March 20] Your greatest asset at the moment is good health, so do all you can to maintain your wellbeing. As birthday great Ingrid Bergman declared: “Happiness is good health and a bad memory.” On Saturday, strive to be honest and to the point.

ARIES [March 21-April 20] Expect to feel a bit sluggish early in the week, as Saturn slows down your manic energy. The new moon activates your wellbeing zone so pay close attention to your health and fitness via a revised diet or updated exercise program.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
Get online and watch the finals day of the Tahiti pro. Insane! Medina won. From Kelly Slater. There have been some very big barrels and some sickening wipe-outs. Kelly Slater has just put on a clinical display with a combined score of 19.8 out of a possible 20 in the semis. Not bad for 42 years of age. Now, where’s my yoga mat? Okay, now back to reality – this week has been a lot of fun. I just hopped out at Moffats and at one stage I was out there with one friend and no one else. As I came to work it started getting better and better and yes the crowd had arrived. There will be some waves on offer this weekend but there will also be a south wind so as I always say, get in early. I think it is nearly time to ditch the wetsuits and if your old faithful has fallen apart, drop down to the boys at Beachbeat and pick up a discount for next season!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Bream are around in good numbers from Channel Island to Twin Waters with prawns and plastics best. Flathead and whiting will be on the drift from Goat Island to Maroochy Bar. Find mangrove jack and mud crabs in Eudlo and Petrie creeks. SURF: Dart and whiting are along Maroochy Beach on the rising tide. Tailor will be taking WA pillies and chrome spinning lures right along the beaches from Warana to Noosa North Shore. Check the gutters at low tide and come back to that gutter when the tide rises. OFFSHORE: Sweetlip, parrot and kingies are around the Blinker off Mooloolaba. Head to the Barwon Banks for snapper, cod and amberjack. Catch squire and pearl perch at the Hards (past the Barwon Banks) using plastics mid water. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam has been busy this week with good reports of bass and undersized silver perch on shrimps and slow trolled lures. Somerset is returning golden perch and bass on deep-diving lures and floated shrimp baits. Recent rains have improved water levels in local dams.
