s a Moffat beach local (and someone who doesn’t mind the odd stroll on the sand), I have walked past the old Dicky wreck more times than I can count, and even in the few short years it has been on my walking track, the old skeleton seems to be diminishing in size. Several times the younger Pearson has picked up a chunk of rock that he’s thrilled to later discover might possibly be a rusted shard of the once hefty iron-hulled boat. Local children and holidaymakers are often to be found inspecting the wreck, and it’s a rare sunrise or sunset when a photographer or two has not set up a tripod to capture a photo of the Dicky Beach landmark. It’s become so much a part of the landscape that I often walk past it without even registering, but the thought of it not being there is a strange one indeed. However, that day will come, and probably within the next 12 months. The wreck will soon be relocated, but the memories and photos live on, and that’s what we are celebrating this week. MWP’s Sam Walker, herself a photographer who has taken the odd snapshot of the Dicky, has discovered a boat with a colourful and interesting past, and one that sticks in the memories of plenty of locals. Head over the page for a slice of Sunshine Coast history. Dragging ourselves f rmly into the here and now, in My Property Preview we are in the mood for spring selling. Find out why activity increases in real estate at this time of year, and what to do if you are thinking of selling, from page 41. We also have plenty of photos from last weekend, including a selection from the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network awards evening, Jemma Pearson starting on page 12.

THE SS DICKY WRECK HOLDS A TITANIC-SIZED PLACE IN THE HEARTS OF LOCALS. WORDS: SAM WALKER

I

t might be a rusting hunk of iron on one of the Coast’s most popular beaches but its decaying skeleton evokes deep-seated emotion among the region’s residents and visitors. A long-standing landmark, a tourist drawcard and a piece of Sunshine Coast history – the SS Dicky wreck is certainly a regional icon. For more than a century the old trading steamer has weathered fair conditions and foul and been battered by salt and water, wind and sand. It’s once hulking physique has been whittled away by time and tide leaving the bare bones of a skeleton protruding through the sand on the beach named after it. Dances and parties, picnics and surf carnivals – with more than a century behind her, this relic has more than a few stories to tell.

Murder on the Dicky

But the most sordid of tales dates back to her working life when the SS Dicky was berthed in Brisbane in 1890. Sunshine Coast Council project co-ordinator for the SS Dicky Michael Anderson says the story goes that Mary Tinsell was murdered on or near the vessel while it was docked in Brisbane. [ 8 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ SE P TE M B E R 5, 20 1 4

8.indd 1

According to an old newspaper report, James M’Gaw, a steward on board, was charged with the wilful murder of Tinsell, whose body was found f oating in the river. A rescue attempt was made when the Dicky’s captain heard a splash but it was to no avail, although it is unclear if the woman drowned or died before hitting the water. The news report states that Tinsell was about 30 years of age and was “well known in certain quarters”. Anderson’s information indicates the evidence was insuff cient to convict M’Gaw.

The Dicky’s history

Murder and mayhem aside, the Dicky was a workhorse, earning her keep transporting goods to and from remote towns and ports up and down the coast. The 30-metre iron-hulled steamer was built in Germany in 1883. It operated as a coastal trader in and around Australia from 1887. On February 4, 1893 the steamer was run aground at Caloundra when Captain James Beattie beached it to avoid running into the rocks at Moffat Beach because of wild weather. Beattie later had his licence suspended for lack of judgement and for not successfully

navigating Caloundra Headland. It was to be the boat’s f nal resting place. Four attempts to re-f oat it were unsuccessful and the wreck was abandoned not far from where it ran aground. The now-popular beach took its name from the wreck, although it appears there has been a slight change to the name. Early reports indicate the steamer was known as the SS Dickey but the ‘e’ has been dropped from the name.

A family relic

Dicky Beach Surf Life Saving Club board member Rob Campbell has a long association with Dicky Beach and the life-saving movement. The Brisbane man has been a club member for 15 years, his wife works at the club and their three children all went through nippers at Dicky Beach. But it was only last year that he discovered a signif cant family connection to the SS Dicky – his great grandfather owned it. “The irony of the thing then is we’ve been members of the surf club for 15 years and for 14 years we didn’t know this was our junk sitting out there on the beach,” Campbell says. His discovery of family ownership came about last year M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

when he moved his mother into a unit and found clippings about his great grandfather, James Campbell, who headed a number of business operations including the hardware empire James Campbell and Sons and the Brisbane Steam and Tug Boat Company. The family connection to the Dicky was a shock. “I was absolutely gob-smacked. That’s the only way to say it,” he says. “I couldn’t wait to tell people. “It’s something that actually def nes our beach, which we’re very proud of.” He believes his great grandfather had six coastal steamers, which were a combination of coal f re and sailboat.

Surf Club connections

Mark Paton, a life member of Dicky Beach Surf Life Saving Club and a former Caloundra City Lifeguard has a long association with the wreck. “It was part of my off ce,” Paton says. He has been a member of the club for 22 years and lives close to the beach, visiting it most days. Paton and Club president Tom Holmes are on the Dicky Taskforce. Paton says he was disappointed when he f rst heard about plans to move the wreck from the beach. But he understands the reasoning and is impressed by the efforts of all involved to try and keep the wreck nearby to preserve it for locals and as a tourist attraction. He has a lot of memories of the wreck and says it claimed more than a few club boards. And with tourists often asking about the wreck, he says the lifeguards became experts on the history and could recite the story for anyone who asked. In his younger days Paton and his mates would have competitions to ride the waves into the wreck and then out again and in more recent years he has trained nippers in and around it. “It’s going to be weird to go down the beach and not see it there.” Dicky Beach is believed to be the only patrolled beach in Australia with a wreck on it.

Recreational activities

The Dicky has been well-used by people during the 121 years she has been lying on the beach. There are reports of parties and dances held on it. Anderson says for a while it was also used as a changing room for bathers. Paton has heard that a kerosene lamp was knocked over at one time and the timber decking caught on f re

The iron-hulled steamer was built in Germany in 1883. It operated as a coastal trader in and around Australia from 1887. It was owned by James Campbell and Sons at the time it ran aground. The vessel was driven ashore at Caloundra during poor weather in February 1893. A number of efforts to refloat the SS Dicky were unsuccessful and it was abandoned. No loss of life occurred. There was a major collapse of the ship’s structure in the 1920s. Some restoration work was undertaken in 2006. Recent extreme weather events have caused catastrophic failure of the wreck. A taskforce was formed in 2013 to develop a long-term strategy.

causing some destruction to the remains. It is also one of the most photographed spots on the Sunshine Coast, with numerous photographers setting up at sunrise and sunset to snap pictures of the old wreck. Paton says even on cold, wet and windy days in winter, the lifeguards would see someone wander down to the beach. They would take a quick snap of the Dicky and then leave again.

Erosion of the wreck

The iron-hulled wreck has been breaking down gradually since it was beached. Anderson says there was a big collapse in the 1920s when the decking failed, but its placement in a very active surf zone has f nally taken its toll. “That was escalated recently with ex-tropical cyclone Oswald,” he says, from which the boat’s skeleton suffered a major blow and vast deterioration. “It’s a loss of heritage that we’re seeing. In a number of years it’s catastrophic.” Paton says debris from the wreck could be found 100 metres either side of it after the pounding from ex-tropical cyclone Oswald.

Raising the Dicky

The Sunshine Coast Council put together a taskforce, headed by Anderson, and including community and Surf Club members to determine its future. “Below the sand there is obviously still a fair amount of the hull in place. The stuff above the sand is breaking down.” He says there are two main concerns: one is the loss of heritage; the other is the increasing safety issues. A number of options have been put forward, with removal of the wreck determined to be the best continued over>

outcome. The decision on how to remove it and where to move it are still being debated, with the council preparing research and planning documents for state government approval. Anderson says marine archaeologists have looked at the site and a heritage impact assessment, a conservation management plan and an interpretive plan will be presented to the state government. While the green light has still not been given for the Dicky’s removal, Anderson says it is expected to take place within 12 months and possibly by January, but it is weather dependent. The taskforce’s preferred location is the park

parents grew up with it and there’s people that played on it,” Smith says. “I don’t know – it seems to be close to their hearts, the Dicky.” The council agreed to allocate $180,000 towards the project during the 2014/15 budget deliberations. The funding will cover relocating the wreck above the tidal area and associated survey works before and after relocation, developing an interpretative area and relocating the wreck to its f nal resting place and ongoing preservation to ensure heritage and conservation values are maintained.

The anchor has also been located about 150 metres off shore but it is uncertain if it will also be located with the wreck. Graham Smith and Col White are community heritage representatives on the taskforce and hope it will become an interactive display which will attract tourists to the area. There are plans to create stories of the wreck and include them. “A lot of people have grown up with it, their

Inaugural Sunny Coast Kids expo

T

wo local businesswomen have joined forces to create an expo aimed at providing information and resources for Coast families. The inaugural Sunny Coast Kids Family Expo is the inspiration of Lara Hodgson, owner of the website Sunny Coast Kids, and Chatter-boxes Speech Pathology Services owner Kylie Martin. Hodgson says the expo is about providing an opportunity for families to learn and share ideas on how to nurture a family life that is healthier, happier and provides more time to spend together doing things they enjoy. “The Sunny Coast Kids Family Expo aims to provide parents with a central location to obtain as much relevant information from local businesses as possible,” Hodgson says. “Parenting raises lots of questions and we’d like to create an environment where parents can f nd some helpful answers and

practical solutions to provide the best opportunities and experiences for their children.” “For example, Chatter-boxes Speech Pathology Services will provide expo goers with some insight into how they can identify whether their child’s speech and language skills are developing appropriately. “Other exhibitors include support for FIFO families and children with disabilities, sport and f tness programs, experts on child safety and GPS tracking devices, musical programs, photographers, entertainment and much more.” Hodgson owns the website sunnycoastkids.com.au, a free online resource for families, which delivers information about everything from craft activities and things to do on the Coast to recipes and competitions. She says the expo is aimed at bringing a range of resources to local families. “There are a lot of

Forum to explore more humane refugee solutions High-prof le refugee experts will be speaking at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, September 7 at a public forum titled Refugees: There IS a better way. Organised by Buddies Refugee Support Group and Graduate Women Queensland Sunshine Coast Branch, the forum has assembled an interesting line-up of guest speakers with f rst-hand knowledge of global and national refugee and asylum seeker issues. As well as addressing the impacts of Australia’s current asylum seeker policies, the speakers will put forward their views on how

our government could implement a more just and workable approach to processing claims and resettling asylum seekers and refugees. Immigration lawyer and chair of the Refugee Council of Australia, Sonia Caton, will talk about the global refugee situation and the legalities of Australia’s policies. Whistleblower, former Salvation Army support worker and author of The Undesirables, Mark Isaacs, will share his experiences from inside the detention centre in Nauru. Bruce Haigh, who is a wellknown political commentator,

former diplomat and a member of the International Refugee Law Judges’ Association, shares the bill. Ahmad Hamid, lawyer and human rights activist and a refugee from the persecuted Ahwazi Arab minority from southern Iran, will speak about his journey to Australia and offer thoughts on how to better manage Australia’s refugee and asylum seeker intake. The forum runs from 3-5pm at Lecture Theatre 1 in Building K at USC. Admission is free however a gold coin donation is welcome. For more information visit refugeebuddies.org.au.

though studies are available showing its impact on the brain. It can be passed on from person to person very easily, and so more than one person in a household may be suffering from similar symptoms and both may be affected.

One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration including ADHD in children, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them. The cause has been found in the gut and seems to be widespread throughout the community. It is a malicious infection mainly picked up from travelling overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is often only detected in specialised testing. This infection has been shown to release a neuronal toxin, affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It has not often been associated with mental health conditions even

Fortunately it is quite easy to address, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. I have seen patients who have suffered depression for four decades, and after treatment for one month have improved out of sight. Other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment.

Often, sufferers are able to correlate the f rst sign of symptoms, coinciding with a trip overseas where they experienced a tummy bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. Australia is so close to the Indonesian countries it can be transmitted from, and Australians travel there often for their holidays, so imagine the amount of people coming back who could be infected and how it can be passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work.

Club with a positive VIEW on life Words: Kate Lees

T

he Caloundra VIEW Club volunteer organisation and support network has invested in women for more than 18 years. What began with a handful of members has grown, with more than 90 women attending the fortnightly club meetings, including foundation members Claire Seddon and Bev Walker. Caloundra VIEW Club publicity off cer Chris Keates says the association began to provide working ladies with an opportunity to connect and socialise. “It started as a group for working ladies who met at night,” she says. The association stands for voice, interests and education of women and also works nationwide as a sponsor for children’s charity The Smith Family. With nine clubs on the Sunshine Coast, 42 throughout Queensland and more than 400 across Australia, VIEW members contribute signif cant fundraising initiatives and volunteer support to help disadvantaged children through education. Last year VIEW raised more than $1 million for Australian students. Keates says Sunshine Coast VIEW clubs take part in sponsorship activities and provide support to primary, secondary and tertiary students in various locations.

Members of VIEW meet for High Tea

“Of the 1082 Learning for Life students supported by The Smith Family nationally, 38 are sponsored by the nine clubs of the Sunshine Coast,” she says. Alongside raising awareness and funds, VIEW members also act as mentors for local children while helping with homework and literacy skills at Smith Family Learning Clubs. Some women also lend their talents to produce library bags for students while others donate stationary packs and books. Keates says VIEW is always looking for positive, skilled and motivated women to join the organisation. For more information visit view.org.au or call Caloundra VIEW Club president Sandra Harding on 5491 3669 if you are interested in joining.

he University of the Sunshine Coast has provided an independent economic snapshot of the greater Sunshine Coast region. USC pro-vice chancellor and professor in property and development Mike Hefferan prepared the report with research fellow Pam Wardner. Hefferan says the summary aims to provide informed observations to benef t the region. “A sound evidence base is critical for rational decisions for businesses, investment and economic planning,” he says. “This is an independent summary based on available statistics. “It is designed to assist government, business and the wider community in their decision making and provide a better appreciation of the key characteristics of our region.” Based on statistics from June 2014, the snapshot focuses on household income, population, sector performance, education, skills

development, construction and tourism and includes Noosa and Sunshine Coast council regions. It analysed a range of sources including the database used by Sunshine Coast Council to develop the region’s Economic Development Strategy 2013-2033. Hefferan’s recommendations include a focus on employment rates and productivity, critical investment and opportunities for people over 60. The report also highlights the requirement to widen the local economic base, foster trade and encourage construction.

What I love to do most is: I like to sleep and chill out and to be near people. Why I want to be a part of your home: I need to get out of the refuge and to have my own home, I have been here for nearly two months now. CHOOSING A BUILDER

☐ Does your builder use an

engineer for soil testing and slab design? ☐ Is your timber frame and

N3 wind rating? ☐ Will the roof and walls

NO SHORTCUTS

of your home contain sarking to help keep out the elements?

The key to a quality long-lasting home means getting it right from the start.

When it comes to building a house and getting it right, there are no short cuts. Morcraft Homes director Steve Morcombe says making the right decisions from beginning to end in the build process will ensure you walk away with a quality home that will require minimal maintenance, is better to live in and an asset that will hold its value over time. “Getting it wrong can lead to a whole lot of heartache, costly maintenance and repairs and a house that is hard to sell in the future,” Morcombe says. “In the excitement of starting to build a new home it is easy to get caught up in the aesthetics and what it will look like at the end.

“But it is really important to get the structural details right at every stage of your home’s construction. “It’s the bits that you can’t see that are the most important.” Getting it right starts with choosing the right builder – someone you trust, who won’t take short cuts to save a few dollars. Someone who pays attention to detail and is dedicated to quality workmanship. He says you need to think about every step of the process, starting with the foundations and soil testing on the property. You need to make sure you will have a quality slab designed for the land it will be placed on and termite-treated timber frames and

trusses. You will want to choose the right termite treatment system – one that suits your home and your lifestyle. And you want a builder who will guarantee to meet or exceed the Queensland Building and Construction Commission’s compliance requirements. It means using metal ceiling barriers and backblocking for all the plaster work and ensuring all your wet areas are properly sealed. When all the structural components are sorted Morcombe says it is time to focus on the finishing touches. It’s not just about choosing the right paint colours but ensuring wall board sealer is used on all

☐ Is your termite system your walls and a three-coat paint system is in place. “Your home is likely to be your biggest investment so it makes sense to get it right at every step of the way. “Taking shortcuts and cutting corners economically could save you $15,000 in the building process but it could cost you tens of thousands of dollars in years to come. “The price of cheaper options can mean you risk slab failure, termite infiltration, serious drainage problems and damage from wind and rain.” Get it right from the start and you will have a quality home, a great space to live in and an asset that will grow in value over time.

Every woman a winner at awards

L

ast Friday night business women from around the Coast gathered at the Caloundra Events Centre for the annual Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards evening. Held every year since 1998, the awards aim to celebrate and encourage women in all areas of business across the region, and the 25 finalists in this year’s awards reflected a diverse range of backgrounds and business interests. Mix FM’s John Williams and last year’s Outstanding Business Woman of the Year, Tsu Shan Chambers, acted as emcees and quickly kicked off the night in front of a packed room. Winners from last year’s event and sponsors presented the f ve awards. MAB Personal Training & Adventures’

Melinda Bingley was announced as Young Business Woman of the Year, while the Corporate Business Woman award went to BOQ Maroochydore’s Debbie Battaglini-Clarke. Kawana Shoppingworld’s Brooke Bennett was named Professional Business Woman, while Emma Gibbons from Huds and Toke took home the award for Micro/Small Business Woman. Finally Maria Woods, the principal of Sunshine Coast Grammar School, was named Outstanding Business Woman of 2014. SCBWN chair of the judging panel Vicki Clark praised all the nominees by saying, “Every woman in this room tonight is a winner, no matter the outcome of these awards.”

Fog - is it just another name for cloud? WIN News weather presenter and meteorologist Hannah McEwan gets clear on fog.

When I think of fog, I think of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. This is probably because parts of the Californian coastline see more than 200 foggy days a year. The foggiest place in the world, however, lies to the north-east of the Shetland Islands in Scotland. Fog is essentially low-lying cloud. In fact, there is no real difference between cloud and fog, as they both form by the same process – condensation. The type of

fog we see depends on the way the air is cooled to create the condensation. Radiation fog is one of the more common types of fog and forms after sunset when the land cools, allowing warm, moist air above the surface to cool and condense. This fog generally clears shortly after sunrise, when the temperature increases and is no longer cool enough for condensation to occur. Advection fog is caused when wind moves warm air moves over a

cool surface. This type of fog regularly forms out at sea when warm air moves over cold water. This occurs off the Californian coast, and the fog can drift into places like San Francisco, pushed by onshore winds or a cold front. Fog can produce light drizzle or snow, however a lot of the time we don’t see any precipitation. The most common feature of fog is the reduction in visibility, which has a major impact on thousands of f ights across the world each year.

LAPLAND ALLURE After stacking her quad bike in Lapland’s dense boreal forest, Sarah Marshall finds solace in a relaxed canoe trip through one of the world’s most serene landscapes.

S

itting cross-legged at the end of a wooden jetty, I’m floating on a vast, watery mirror, marvelling at the reflection of motionless clouds hanging in a cornflower blue sky. In a few months this lake will be frozen and the landscape wrapped with snow – the more recognisable face of Lapland. But right now, it’s summer and baking hot. So I find myself wearing shorts and a T-shirt just 300 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. At night the sun skims the horizon and never

properly sets, stealing the dark stage where the Northern Lights will perform much later in the year and attract thousands of tourists to the region. At a latitude of 64 degrees north, Skelleftea is a sleepy town in southern Swedish Lapland, not far from the Baltic Sea, characterised by clapboard houses in a palette of pastel hues. And thanks to a new direct three-hour flight from the UK with Ryanair, it’s set to become the gateway to an area popular with adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts.

“Whatever season you come here, it’s beautiful,” says Thorbjorn, a sprightly, philosophical nature-lover who runs the Svansele Wilderness Centre, an hour’s drive from Skelleftea. He owns nine overnight camps in Swedish Lapland, ranging from comfortable ensuite apartments to traditional lavvo tents lined with reindeer skins, and offers activities for summer and winter months. We eat with forks and plates handmade by Thorbjorn, using wood from a local saw mill. “I get through about 45,000 of these a year,” he says, laughing. “There’s no need for washing up – we just throw them straight on the fire afterwards!” In between mouthfuls of food, I trial a few of the on-site amusements. I attempt to lasso reindeer

antlers with a long piece of cable then throw an axe at a tree stump embedded in the wall. Thorbjorn’s appetite for adventure is insatiable and even his name has the comic book hero translation of Thunder Bear. Give Thorbjorn 24 hours’ notice and he boldly claims he can find a moose in the surrounding woodland – or he’ll refund the cost of your plane ticket home. I appreciate his passion for the wilderness as I ride a quad bike through the boreal forest, thick with bristly birch and pine trees tickling the sky. Unfortunately, though, my zest for adventure turns sour when I hit a stump and career off-road into a tree, sending pine needles cascading from the sky like confetti and destroying the quad’s bumper beyond recognition. I bravely get back in the saddle but no less than five minutes later, while attempting to negotiate a ditch, I mistakenly slam the accelerator, rearing my mechanical stallion up onto its haunches and skidding across the road. Before leaving, we visit another jewel in Thorbjorn’s crown – a taxidermy exhibition featuring 680 stuffed creatures, lovingly displayed in their natural surroundings. Most of the menagerie is the result of road kill, knocked over by cars – or possibly quad bikes being driven by reckless tourists. Matti and Stina, who run Lapland Canoe

Polo Trendline man. from

Central in Jokkmokk, just north of the Arctic Circle, say they’ve seen brown bears fleetingly from the car. When we go for a paddle, I’m quite relieved we don’t encounter any angry mammals on the small island where we stop for a rest, tea and cinnamon buns. Gliding slowly through the water is one of the best ways to appreciate this pristine landscape, and with every dip of my paddle, I feel a little further from reality. Respect for the natural world is vital for survival in this environment, something the indigenous Sami people know only too well. Once nomads who would roam the high latitudes, they have adapted to more modern lifestyles, but their knowledge and love of nature remains undiluted. Reindeer herder Lotta Svensson still visits a seite (sacred place) two kilometres from the Batsuoj Sami camp, which she set up with her husband Tom to educate people about the Sami way of life. Lotta tells me about the history of the Sami; how their belief system, shamanic drums and eventually even their own language were banned by the Swedish church. “But it’s never too late to relearn,” she says with confidence. “It just takes a little longer.” And if the place of worship is this beautiful, it’s certainly worth the effort.

] THE WEEK THAT WAS

Will Telstra’s buyback give you bang for your buck?

Troy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

T

elstra’s (TLS) FY14 result was largely in line with expectations. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation rose by 4.7 per cent, which satisfied guidance of low single digit growth. The f nal dividend of 15 cents was a pleasant surprise, versus our forecast of 14.5 cents. The company signed an extra 229,000 mobile subscribers, which sounds impressive but was below our forecast of 319,000. Going forward into FY15, Telstra has again guided to low single-digit growth in EBITDA, which is broadly consistent with forecasts. In terms of the dividend, we forecast 30 cents per share in FY15, which translates to a

yield of 5.4 per cent (fully franked) at the current share price. The announcement of a $1 billion off-market buyback dominated the result and was the main reason for the positive share price reaction. The buyback will be funded from excess cash generated by strong operational performance and also from recent asset sales. Shareholders can tender shares in to the buyback at discounts of between six per cent and 14 per cent to the market price, and/or at the f nal price. Shareholders can also specify a minimum price at which they are willing to sell. The buyback price will be the lowest price at which TLS can buy back the $1 billion of shares it seeks. Shareholders will be scaled back to the extent that there are more shares available at the buyback price than the $1 billion it is targeting. Telstra intends to buy back a minimum of 925 shares from each shareholder who has successfully tendered, or if this would leave that shareholder with 375 shares or less,

Beginning in Years 6 and 7, our middle college program captures the imagination and expands your child’s horizons. It’s our balanced approach to your tween’s transition that helps them prepare for the exciting teenage years ahead.

then they intend on buying back the entire holding (subject to scale back). The buyback price will have two components – a capital component of $2.33 and a fully franked dividend equal to the difference between the buyback price and $2.33. For example, if we assume a market price of $5.50, a buyback price of $4.73 (14 per cent discount), a cost base of $4 and a holding period greater than 12 months, then an investor will receive $2.33 of capital and a fully franked dividend of $2.40. An investor in a zero tax environment will be 26 cents (or around 4.7 per cent) better off tendering shares into the buyback versus selling them on market. However, investors with the same cost base and hold period that are in a taxable environment may be better off selling them on market. Is the fruit in your fruit bowl looking a bit sad? Don’t throw it out – make a delicious compote. This versatile fruit dish can be made from just about any fruit combination you have, even dried fruit, although it is recommended dried fruit is soaked first. It is commonly made from figs, pears, apples, berries, rhubarb or plums. Also try stone fruit, mangoes or any other seasonal fruit. Just pop the fruit in a saucepan, whole or chopped. Add quarter of a cup of juice or water, depending on personal taste and what you have at hand and some sugar to taste. For extra flavour, add your choice of vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, orange or lemon peel. You can also add ground almonds, shredded coconut, sultanas or raisins. Bring to the boil and simmer for a few minutes or until cooked to your liking. This quick and easy dish is great as a dessert – serve hot or cold with ice-cream, yoghurt or cream, or try it with pancakes. It’s also great with porridge or muesli for breakfast.

No model came close to Gisele Bündchen, who earned some $US16 million more than her quarterback husband Tom Brady

How much do models really get paid? FORBES TOP A 21 EARNING ustralia’s Miranda Kerr is the equal third most highly paid model in the world, according to Forbes. Down one place on last year’s list, Kerr tied with Kate Moss, Liu Wen and Kate Upton. Kerr, Moss, Wen and Upton made $US7 million (about $7.5 million) each in 2013/14, with Upton making the top 10 for the f rst time. But no model came close to Gisele Bündchen, who earned $US47 million in 2013/14, some $US16 million more than her quarterback husband Tom Brady. Bündchen has taken home $US386 million from modelling since 2001 and has lucrative contracts with global brands Chanel and H&M, as well as having deals with beauty brands. Bündchen also gets a slice of sales from jelly sandals she designs for shoemaker Grendene and is the face of Pantene hair products and Oral-B in Brazil, where she also has her own lingerie line. The 21 models on the Forbes list made a combined $US142 million (about $153 million).

Cherokee’s image upgrade turns heads WORDS Peter Atkinson

I

t seems the folks at Jeep don’t mind putting a few noses out of joint in their quest for success. You can love or hate the American maker’s irritating but catchy “I bought a Jeep” advertising campaign, but nobody can argue with its success in raising the brand’s prof le. Likewise, Jeep’s latest model – the all-new Cherokee – seems set to divide opinion with its out-there styling and softer, gentler image. Its slim, slit-like headlights, fold-over bonnet and bold, slotted grille immediately set the new Cherokee apart from its competitors.

Yet with a package of impressive equipment levels and a class-leading nine-speed automatic transmission, it seems destined to succeed in this very competitive market segment. There’s no question the Cherokee is a huge departure from the much-loved model it replaces. The very macho, squared-off previous body style has been replaced by a more feminine, elegant approach, and it’s an altogether more ref ned machine than the superseded Cherokee. Viewed in isolation, that might seem a strange change to make, but seen in the context

of the Chrysler-Jeep range, it makes sense. The brawny Wrangler and soon-to-arrive Renegade models provide the testosterone. Jeep needed a more ref ned, female-friendly model in this segment to pitch to urban families, and this car certainly f ts the bill. In fact, it wasn’t until I parked the Cherokee beside a Mazda CX5 that their similarities became evident. Like the Mazda, the Jeep now sits on the same platform as a passenger car, and its well-resolved ride and nimble handling ref ect that. Its f at handling characteristics are more akin to a smart sedan than a high-riding wagon, and it also travels blissfully over bumps and road imperfections. It will be offered in four model levels – the entry-level, four-cylinder, front-wheel-drive Sport; plus three V6 variants – the Longitude, Limited and f agship Trailhawk. Most models still get some off-road credibility, with all but the base model getting Jeep’s SelecTerrain dial-up all-wheel-drive system. We drove the entry-level Sport ($33,500 plus on roads) and mid-range Longitude ($39,000), with the Trailhawk topping out at $47,500. A diesel variant is likely to arrive in Australia by the end of the year. The Longitude impressed with its impressive equipment levels, comfortable ride and interior and its competent and relatively eff cient drivetrain. The Pentastar V6 is an impressively good f t for this new Cherokee. It’s smooth, torquey and delivers ample punch without breaking the bank at the bowser. Expect average thirst of about 10 litres per 100 kilometres, which is quite respectable. The Cherokee Sport, on the other hand, makes do with a four-cylinder engine and a front-wheeldrive-only conf guration. The 2.4-litre four is codenamed the Tigershark – probably the only really sexy thing about it. Continued over>

]

That, ironically, makes the Sport by far the least “sporty” of the Cherokee models in every sense, whether in performance or off-road capability. A diesel variant is also headed this way, and it shapes as possibly the pick of the litter. The nine-speed auto fell a little short of expectations, lacking the seamless shifts you might expect, and it tended to hold gears longer than seemed appropriate, and was indecisive on downshifts on occasions. On the positive side, it helps the Cherokee deliver fuel eff ciency f gures of 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres in four-cylinder version. The Cherokee’s interior is further evidence of how far American makers in general, and Chrysler-Jeep in particular, have lifted their game in this department. We loved the interior of the latest Grand Cherokee and this model continues that theme. The general cockpit layout is tasteful and ergonomically clever, with some nicely thought-out touches.

The so-called uConnect cabin management system, built around a clear and easy-to-use 8.5-inch colour touchscreen, is one of the best of its kind. On the mid-range Longitude model it features satellite navigation, reversing camera and controls for audio and climate

control – all accessible via logical touchscreen icons. There’s also a well-presented trip computer in the instrument panel, featuring average and instant economy readouts, navigation and audio settings, tyre pressure monitoring, range monitor and a digital speed readout – particularly useful because the speedo dial is a little hard to read at quick glance. Storage-wise, it’s also a stand-out,

including the smart little storage tubs beneath the passenger seat base cushion. There’s also ample cup holder and knick-knack space. But a word of warning. Jeep has surprisingly decided that the underseat storage was one of the features to be stripped from the base-model Sport. It also does without automatic wipers or headlights, all of which makes it feel a bit basic compared with the higher-spec models. The payoff is an entry-level price of $33,500, but for the extra f ve grand, I’d probably opt for the mid-range Longitude model, which felt adequately posh. Our test machine even boasted an electronic tailgate, albeit one that declined to operate on a couple of occasions when parked on a steep incline. Some will no doubt mourn the Cherokee’s shift from its macho image, but the high-end models represent impressive value and, with the low-cost four-cylinder Sport model, makes the it a real contender. Already in its f rst month Jeep has found almost 600 buyers, helping it to historically high sales numbers.

JEEP CHEROKEE Details: Five-door, f ve-seat mid-sized SUV with choice of four-cylinder or six-cylinder petrol engines; nine-speed automatic transmission, twoor four-wheel-drive. Tech stuff: 3.2-litre Pentastar petrol V6 produces 202kW, 340Nm; 2.4-litre four-cylinder Tigershark engine produces 134kW, 232Nm; nine-speed automatic transmission on both models; all V6 models allwheel-drive with Selec-Terrain system; four-cylinder models front-wheel-drive only. Features: Airbags, f ve-star safety rating; touch-screen cabin management system with sat nav, reversing camera; dial-up all-wheel-drive system (V6 models); dynamic trip computer with voice control. Thirst: 10L/100km (V6 models); 8.3L/100km (Sport). Verdict: More people will be saying, “I bought a Jeep.” Bottom line: From $33,500.

Final Fords fetch $400,000

S

even days of intense bidding ended last month, with two of Ford Australia’s last-ever FPV’s to be built fetching a combined figure of almost $400,000. Bidding was brisk from Ford fans with FPV GT F build number 001 receiving 84 bids and the f nal car, build number 500, receiving 106 bids. Car 001 secured a winning bid of $157,600 and car 500 achieved a f nal bid of $236,100. The proud new owner of Car

001 is a Western Australia-based businessman while the new owner of Car 500 is from Victoria. Car 001, in Kinetic Blue with black stripes, has been used for media reviews and comes with the Victorian registration plates GTF 001 but Car 500 is yet to be built. The winning bidder of Car 500 will be able to choose the colour and stripe package of the vehicle. The auctions raised funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) with the support of eBay and Bid For Good and will form part of Ford’s fundraising efforts for the year. “Given the historical signif cance of both cars, we expected to raise considerable funds for NBCF and I am thrilled with the f nal result,” Ford Australia president and CEO, Bob Graziano, says. “Both Ford and the NBCF are focused on the importance of investing in research and development and the innovations those programs can achieve.”

WORD ON THE STREET More voltage for Audi

Zoom at the zoo The roar of the tiger will be in competition with the rumble of V8 supercars at Australia Zoo across the Father’s Day weekend. Racing legend Dick Johnson will be stopping by for the inaugural Australia Zoom event, where more than 30 cars will be showcased against the backdrop of the zoo. Lexus will feature the CT200 track car and the LFA in the interactive motorsport display. Only 10 LFAs, originally priced at $750,000, came to Australia.

Audi is to upgrade part of its vehicle electrical system from twelve to 48 volts. The move represents another technical building block for facilitating the integration of new automotive technologies while increasing the power and efficiency of its cars. The 48 volt electrical system operates independently of the engine load and therefore fundamentally improves the acceleration performance. The technology is ideal for dynamic chassis control systems. Audi will unveil new applications in this field.

Speedy ute There’s a rumour going round that’s sure to get the hearts of ute-lovers racing. Apparently Holden is getting set to launch what might become the world’s fastest ute. The project is apparently under wraps but MWP has heard it will be fitted with the latest technology and hardware and dealers believe it will be in showrooms by the end of the year.

Spring is here

It’s off cially spring, and as the weather warms up, so too does the property market.

W

hile agents have been reporting a healthier market since the start of the year, spring is traditionally the time when new buyers emerge. It’s also a time when home owners think about selling. Why is there renewed energy in spring? • For a start homes tend to look their best in these warmer months. The garden ‘springs’ to life, especially after the recent rains, and the sun streams into rooms, creating a lighter, airier atmosphere. • In winter it’s just too easy to bet emptied to relax on the couch on a Saturday morning. In spring, open homes draw more buyers as we all dust off the cobwebs and get outside. • Prepping a home for sale means giving it a thorough clean, and in spring most home owners have more energy to put into a good clean and de-clutter and get stuck into maintenance jobs. DIY is easier once the

weather warms up. The nippy winds have died down but it’s not yet baking hot, so f xing the garden and painting the fences are much more enjoyable. • We are also on the countdown to Christmas, and many would-be buyers are keen to buy a home in spring so they can be well and truly in their new abode before Santa arrives. • If your home has a pool, outdoor living areas and good cross-ventilation, it will really appeal to buyers in these months. Many Coast homes aren’t made for winter, and are much more appealing when the sun comes out. • It’s around now that tourists come to the Coast to thaw out after the chilly winter they have had down south. That’s why open homes are more popular – even if they aren’t thinking about moving here, a visit to a beautiful home might be enough to turn a tourist’s head.

Get help

Of course, while spring is traditionally an active time for buyers and sellers, it’s always worth chatting to an experienced real estate agent who has seen the ups and downs of the markets and can give you personal advice on the best time and way to sell your property. Your location and the type of home you own will impact on this – for example, if you have a cosy cottage in the hinterland with f replaces and a small outdoor living area, spring might not be the best time to market it. It might be best to hold off until March or April next year when these features will really appeal to potential buyers.

Tips for getting spring ready • Play up the features of the home that make it comfy in summer such as cross-ventilation, high ceilings, fans and air-conditioning. • If your home is near a school or in the zone of one of the Coast’s more popular schools, don’t forget to advertise the fact. During this time many people outside the region will be looking to buy, and proximity to schools is a big drawcard. • While many tourists are looking at open homes and eager to see what the market is like on the Coast, they might not be ready to move here permanently. Still, compared with other regions our prices are low, so pitching your home as a potential investment will secure a lot more interest. If your property would be suited to the rental market, you will get more buyers – especially those who don’t live here – taking a look. It’s worth gathering a bit of research, such as likely rental income and statistics on rental availability in the area, so your agent can show wouldbe buyers what a great investment your home would make. High achiever at Property Today Sunshine Coast property marketer Grant Cheatham has joined the Property Today team. “Grant is a very well-known and high-achieving agent and we are delighted to have him join our team here at Property Today,” says Property Today sales manager David Grenfell. Cheatham has been an established agent in the region since 2007. He entered the industry from hospitality, where he owned a couple of cafes in Mooloolaba. His move to Property Today was not a diff cult one. He tells MPP, “I choose … Property Today because they are a team of professionals that have been in the industry for a long time [but] still with plenty of enthusiasm and drive. And very well lead by Jamie Holbrook and his support staff with the latest systems in place to provide an exceptional service.” He adds, “A lot of agents stumble because they believe transactions are f nished once the sale is complete. I believe every transaction is an open

S

tockland has fast-tracked a new land release at its new Arbour village at Bells Reach to keep up with demand for home sites. The popular precinct is a boutique village located off Bellvista Boulevard and surrounded by natural bushland and conservation areas, adjacent to Lamerough Creek. Home sites in the initial two releases sold within weeks of being launched. Blocks in the new Apple release range from 280 to 633 square metres and are priced from $196,000. Home and land packages start at $347,500.

Stockland Sunshine Coast regional manager Ben Simpson says interested buyers need to act quickly. “There has already been a great deal of interest in the new Apple land release – especially from families who love the lifestyle on offer at Arbour,’’ he says. “The village has its own entry statement and is located in a quiet enclave f anked by natural parkland and close to waterways. Some of the home sites even offer views of the Glass House Mountains.” A highlight of Arbour will be the 8500-square

ARIES [March 21-April 20] The full moon highlights health plus spiritual wellbeing. Issues from the past could also arise, as unresolved matters surface and demand to be addressed ASAP. On the weekend, you’ll feel hasty and hot-headed, so pace yourself, otherwise you might just blow a fuse!

TAURUS [April 21-May 21] A current situation is confusing but don’t let it compromise your moral radar. Stand your ground and be a reliable bull. On Saturday, enjoy life’s little luxuries (like good food, fine wine and convivial company). But – if you’re too self-indulgent – a loved one won’t be happy.

GEMINI [May 22-June 21] The full moonbeams place you firmly in the spotlight, so make sure it’s for the right reasons. Strive to get the balance right between being creative and being organised. Logic goes out the window this weekend, as you feel confused about your future direction.

CANCER [June 22-July 23] You crave your comfortable routines, but you need to shake them up with some creative thinking and adventurous dreaming. Are you stuck in worry wart mode? Seek advice from an older friend. A problem shared is a problem halved.

LEO [July 24-Aug 23] Communication, finances and family matters are all favoured, as you combine self-discipline and creativity. With Jupiter powering through your sign, it’s time to live life to the max. As D.H. Lawrence said: “I want to live my life so that my nights are not full of regrets.”

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Joint ventures are highlighted but don’t assume you have all the information. Check the facts and wait until the full picture emerges. Your motto for the week is from Roald Dahl, born on September 13: “The greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.”

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] A friend or colleague comes up with an unusual proposal that confuses you. Avoid making spur-of-the-moment decisions. And don’t allow a loved one to manipulate you, as they try to persuade you to do something against your better judgment.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The stars favour joint ventures and projects, as you enjoy contributing your talents. Draw up a to-do list, and be flexible enough to tweak it later. Expect a dramatic dummy-spit from a loved one. Don’t let someone’s flattering remarks blind you to their real intentions.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Don’t assume you know where a loved one or colleague is coming from – you may be way off the mark. Ask for clarification. You’re firing on all cylinders on the weekend. If you make bold moves and take calculated risks, you’ll taste success.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] The full moon and Saturn link up, which increases your determination to get things done. It’s also a terrific time to network with colleagues plus develop your social media connections. Concentration is high and your attention to detail is even better than usual.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Avoid taking short-cuts at work. Look for facts hidden beneath the surface, be patient, and do all the research required. Plus resist the temptation to use retail therapy as entertainment. On the weekend, don’t expect everyone to appreciate your quirky, kooky and chaotic ways.

PISCES [Feb 20-March 20] Attached fish – has your relationship become ho-hum? Venus is vamping through your relationship zone which provides a welcome romantic respite. Singles – sparks could fly with a tender Taurus or a Virgo. But you need to take off your rose-coloured glasses.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

What a month of waves! If for some reason you missed last week, best slap yourself hard as it was pumping. Some of the points got a bit hectic with some beginner stand-up paddle boarders getting into situations they shouldn’t have. This does cause a lot of angst among surfers! Not sure how up north was but where I was it was pumping (and, no, I’m not telling). A lot of water was on the move making staying in the spot a tad difficult. Anyway, I cannot recall a greater August. That said I do have a memory like a goldfish! The super bank on the Gold Coast was incredible with some of the pros scoring 14 plus second barrels – count that out in your head and it is a long barrel. I’m off to Bali next week for a research mission! Locally there might be a few sliders but get in early as the wind will be from the south. Maroochydore is the best pick in those conditions. Okay, the Hurley Pro starts next week and I am predicting some big airs. Please, please someone take out Medina – he’s unstoppable at the moment.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Quality bream are moving in on the rising tide at Maroochy and Mooloolah River bars with baby blue pillies, mullet flesh and prawns best. Chopper tailor are around the Motorway Bridge pylons at night. SURF: Conditions this week have allowed tailor and dart to come in close to Pincushion and up to Mudjimba. Sea bream will be at Alexandra Headland using mullet fillet. The best time is dusk. Tailor are off the rocks at Coolum and Peregian and have been the biggest so far this season with anglers using pillies and chrome-type spinning weighted lures. OFFSHORE: The Barwon Banks are firing for snapper, pearlies and parrot with squid and pillies for best results. Large squid have been caught using squid jigs around Old Woman Island. Spanner crabs are being caught in their usual haunts. FRESHWATER: No reports from local impoundments, but Somerset has been steady for bass and golden perch using live shrimps in the warmest part of the day with fish being taken from five to 10 feet down. Don’t forget your freshwater licenses.
