t’s funny how here at MWP we sometimes read our own magazine like any of our other readers would, taking note of the good work done on the Coast in our local news section, drooling over a gorgeous pair of shoes in our style pages or taking some f nancial advice for the advisors at Ord Minnett. In our my time pages we remind readers to have a bit of fun, and a few weeks ago we ran a little story on a creativity workshop run by the gorgeous and talented Sandy Archer from Tempo Lifestyles. Last week I took my own magazine’s advice, and went along to Sandy’s house to get creative with the woman herself and a handful of other eager participants. Sandy is a designer, a life coach and an artist, and creates gorgeous works often with nothing more than some paper, glue and a splash of paint. Sandy told us that we might not all be artistic but we are certainly creative, so I spent the day ripping, cutting and pasting, and left Sandy’s home feeling amazing. Children instinctively know that creativity is good for the soul but us grown-ups sometimes need to be told. Thanks Sandy for that timely reminder. In our cover story this week we have more good things for the soul – and the body. This weekend Maleny’s Real Food Festival is coming to town, and Sam Walker gives us a sneak peek in our cover story, over the page. Sam has been a busy girl – she recently took a dip in the ocean to swim with the whales (see page 20). We also have plenty of other things to keep you occupied in my time on page 28, and three pages of gorgeous clothes in my style (I want those pants!). Jemma Pearson Until next week…

real food fans THE REAL FOOD FESTIVAL HAS CAPTURED THE HEARTS, MINDS AND TASTEBUDS OF AUSTRALIA.

WORDS: SAM WALKER AND CANDICE HOLZNAGEL

I

t started as a one-day event to highlight the quality of food on the Sunshine Coast. Four years on, the Sunshine Coast Real Food Festival has grown into a two-day event that has captured the hearts of producers and consumers across the Coast and further afield, attracting high-profile presenters keen to spread the message about real food. But what is real food? “For me it’s about the food being good, clean and fair,” says festival director Julie Shelton. “In other words, its food that makes you feel good when you’re eating it. “Now, it’s not necessarily food that is the healthiest food available. But we all know that the enjoyment of our food and what I call vitamin Y – which is the vitamin ‘yum’ – is really important and I think we can get a bit too hung up on whether it’s raw, organic, fresh-picked whatever.” So an occasional sweet treat, made with love from scratch, fits Shelton’s definition of real food. She says real food has to have some level of nutrient density so you are nourishing your body and it shouldn’t be highly processed. And she believes the way the food is being produced and processed or prepared is really important. “So it’s got to be clean, it’s got to be not harmful to the environment and not harmful to the person that’s eating it and lastly, it’s got to be produced in a way that provides fair remuneration for the producer.” Shelton is particularly passionate about ensuring farmers are fairly compensated for the enormous amount of time they put into producing food and that the price of good food is within the reach of all consumers.

8.indd 1

Shane Bailey discusses the merits of kaffir last year’s fest lime leaves at ival

Shelton’s passion for real food began about 15 years ago when she owned an organic farm and through her involvement in different organisations she came to realise food had become just another commodity to many people and was treated like any other item on the stockmarket. As a result, she says we have warped our sense of values around food, so it has become very much about money and the cheapest and most

Foor m For me it’s about the food being good, clean and fair. In other words, its food that makes you feel good when you’re eating it. What I call vitamin ‘yum’ is really importantt convenient food possible. She thinks a lot of people have lost their ability to determine or to sense what is good food. And that is why the she started the festival – as a way to re-educate people about good food and help them understand the health and nutritional value of choosing the right foods. “I think what people have forgotten about – they’re so used to seeing the plastic bags full of insipid coloured tomatoes and various other products, that they forget that good food that nourishes us is not just about calories, it’s about all of those other nutrients but also the aroma and the texture and all of those other things.

“If you’ve never tasted a beautiful fresh-picked vine-ripened tomato that’s still warm from the sun, if you’ve never smelt that and held it still warm in your hand and felt that thin skin and mushy interior, if the only thing that you’ve ever experienced is those rubbery pale tasteless, well travelled things that comes through the system, how can you make that choice?” Shelton says we need to re-educate at least two generations about what is good food because sadly, there are some families where preparing food means opening a packet, using a microwave or rehydrating something and cooking from scratch is not something they have experienced. To help with the education process, the 2014 festival will showcase more than 100 exhibitors and 48 presenters across the weekend including Costa Georgiadis from Gardening Australia, Natasha Mirosch from The Good Food Guide, the author of Sweet Poison, David Gillespie and Tania Hubbard from Gluten Free, Grain Free. Local chefs taking part include Cameron Matthews from The Long Apron, Tim Montgomery from Berardo’s, and Tony Kelly from Hello Harry. Between them they will cover a huge range of topics. The demonstrations and conversations will take place in five venues – The Real Food Kitchen, Food for Thought, Nourishing Ideas, Food Craft and Kitchen Ideas, with presentations meeting those themes. In the Real Food Kitchen, MP Andrew Powell will cook off against Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson, and you can see chefs cooking a variety of dishes with local produce. In the Food for Thought tent you can listen to the discussion about GMOs in our food chain, the impact of the energy revolution on our food and the benefits of kitchen gardens in our schools. Other topics include honey bees versus native bees; making the best coffee; whether sugar is that bad and the benefits of worm farms. Shelton is delighted that Christine Man Manfield, who is world-renowned for her culinary excellence and her ability to draw on tastes and flavours from world cultures, will be among this year’s presenters. Manfield is a chef, author and culinary ambassador and will be presenting in the Real Food Kitchen tent, working w with local producers and their produce. “I strongly believe in the ccomplementary and sustaining nature of ggood food, wine, people, pleasure and le learning and I think the Real Food Festival em embraces all those things,” Manfield says. “I have travelled around the world fo focusing on food and Australian food

regions like the Sunshine Coast have some of the best available so we need to celebrate that.” She is looking forward to sharing her food knowledge with festival visitors and is excited to be cooking and sampling some of the fresh produce the Sunshine Coast has to offer. “A key component of our festival is what we call authenticity,” Shelton says. “People can come and there’s no façade – it’s not a slick operation. It’s come and drive through the green rolling hills to get here and sit on a hay bale and eat some really nice food that’s good for you. I think people are looking for that kind of experience.” She says the festival is so much more than a farmer’s market, with so many experts sharing their knowledge and ideas, so when you next visit your local farmer’s market you will be armed with inspiration and ideas on how to use the produce. The Real Food Festival is on this Saturday and Sunday at Maleny Showground from 9am to 4pm. Entry is $20 for a daily adult pass and children under 16 are free. For the full program, visit realfoodfestivals.com.au. continued over>

Real food-loving volunteers are an essential ingredient in the smooth running of the festival. This year, 105 have put their hands up and another 40 are still needed.

KITCHEN GARDENS

Strawberries have become an iconic food for the Sunshine Coast, with the majority of Queensland’s 200 strawberry growers based in the region. This sweet red fruit is grown on 600 hectares of local land.

Costa Georgiadis from Gardening Australia will have a presentation with Conondale and Montville school children who participate in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Georgiadis, a landscape architect, is passionate about plants and people and has a holistic approach to gardening the soil and the soul. Stephanie Alexander has a vision that pleasurable food education is accessible to every Australian school with a primary curriculum. Together Costa and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden students will discuss the benefits of having home and school kitchen gardens and growing your own food.

The Sunshine Coast is home to Australia’s biggest producer of fresh ginger. There are about 30 farmers’ and/or produce markets on the Sunshine Coast. We produce almost twice as much poultry as we consume on the Sunshine Coast. Cameron Matthews and Tania Hubbard

CHANGING FOOD TRENDS This year is shaping up to be the year of quinoa and the paleo diet. In 2013 it was kale and coconut oil. These ever-changing food trends play a big role in today’s society. For some people, the landscape of their diet is much more than a choice, its a necessity. According to the NSW Government’s food authority, surveys indicate that up to 25 per cent of the national population believe they have an intolerance. Sunshine Coast dietitian Lydia Sutakowsky says statistics show that 10 per cent of the population have coeliac disease but supermarket figures show 30 per cent of shoppers buy gluten-free products. “Food is very much trend driven and the average person interested in food tends to go to the ‘grey’ literature – newspapers, magazines, blogs, for information,’’ she says. “Over the years, I have seen many people with an array of conditions but I feel that food intolerances are

becoming more and more evident in general society. “There are several factors that lead to an exacerbation of symptomatology. The main ones being as they get older, symptoms get worse and secondly stress, anxiety or other traumatic events can also exacerbate their symptoms. At least five out of every 10 people I see are for gastrointestinal tract problems.’’ Coolum’s Amy McGann knows only too well the reality of living with food intolerances. Her son Ethan, two, was diagnosed with intolerances as a baby after an array of issues including stomach upsets, rashes, irritability and an inability to sleep. The result was a diet free of gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, nuts, oats, seafood, maize and sugar. “With Ethan we had to be cautious with these intolerances when starting solids and accordingly, we all pretty much adopted this diet to encourage Ethan to eat what he was offered,’’ McGann says. “Then along came Cohen who was very active and constantly

hiccupping in utero. I asked the doctor about this and she said … I could cut out everything Ethan reacted to and see what happened, so I did and Cohen settled right down. McGann says while shopping and meal planning was initially difficult, it has become easier to cater for intolerances. Sutakowsky says with the emergence of farmers markets and organic cafes it is easier to find the right foods. “If looking at the issue from a public health perspective, these trends should be leading to overall

healthier eating. Will they lead to reductions on national rates of obesity or chronic disease? Only time will tell. It does show that people care about where their food comes from, they want to buy local, they want to support their local farmers.” The Real Food Festival will feature several presentations addressing changing diets and food intolerances including preparing delicious organic raw vegan food; home cooking ideas for kids with intolerances; gut health, autism and ADHD and vegan and vegetarian diet planning.

MY KITCHEN RULES

Dan and Steph Mulheron from My Kitchen Rules will be guest judges at a barbecue cook-off at the festival. Four teams of two will cook-off against each other to create an impressive barbecue dish using the Sunshine Coast’s best sausages, complemented by produce sourced from local exhibitors at the festival. The Mulherons will be on hand to provide advice to the competing teams. The winning team will win a barbecue and a private cooking lesson with the sausage king (and queen).

Digging deep for kids in need

F

ormer businessman and paramedic Chris O’Dempsey uses his skills to change the lives of those less fortunate. The Buderim resident dedicates his life to charity and started Project Vietnam, a medical building organisation, in 1990 after a visit to Ho Chi Minh City. Project Vietnam quickly evolved and in 2000, O’Dempsey founded Heart Reach Australia, with the support of an old school friend, the late Peter Brock. O’Dempsey and his team provide medical facilities and implement education programs for primary school students, primarily in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. The charity worker says the organisation also supports and funds homeless children by sending them to school. “We are setting programs up to educate the younger generation,” he says. “Over the years we have been able to inf uence the kids.” With a main focus on health care, Heart Reach Australia also implements renal and mammogram machines into medical clinics in poverty-affected areas. Alongside the charity’s achievement of medical infrastructure and clinics, O’Dempsey says there is an importance placed on teaching and helping the locals. “It’s a combination of education, building gardens and teaching them so the next generation are able to gain employment,” he says. “We also provide free vaccinations.” Additionally, the organisation distributes motorbike helmets to curb road accidents and fatalities.

Better Buddies grants

With Heart Reach Australia’s vision turning to the tourist mecca of Hoi An, O’Dempsey hopes to buy an ambulance boat for the region. He says the acquisition of a medical boat is necessary for the area due to constant f ooding. To raise funds for the boat and the Heart Reach Australia organisation O’Dempsey is opening his garden to the public. He says 100 per cent of the funds raised will be used by the organisation and will be of enormous benef t to those in need. “It’s a case of getting the word out there,” he says. “People can have a fantastic day looking at the garden and raising money that goes to medical research.” Visitors to the open day can also view photographs, make further donations and sponsor a child. A cafe will also be open, providing light refreshments. O’Dempsey urges people to support the Heart Reach Australia programs and says sponsors have a

strong interaction and connection with the children. “We are a hands-on organisation,” he says. “We are proactive in trying to bring about change.” The open garden will be held on September 13 to 16 at 17 Barkson Court, Buderim Meadows from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Entry is $7 and children aged under 15 are free. Visit heartreachaustralia.com or call O’Dempsey on 5476 9444 to f nd out more.

Coast primary school students can win a free anti-bullying program to introduce or enhance a buddy system in their school. The offer is thanks to the Better Buddies programs, sponsored by Camp Australia state-wide. The Better Buddies program pairs students in their f rst and last years of primary school and teaches them values and strategies that help to create a caring school community where bullying is reduced. With as many as one in four Australian children experiencing the effects of bullying, Camp Australia spokesperson Andrew Kent says this program can be life changing for local children. “The earlier children learn anti-bullying messages, the less likely they are to bully or be bullied,” Kent says. “We are delighted to offer Queensland schools the chance to win one of 10 sponsored Better Buddies programs in their school valued at $2200 each.” He says the internationally renowned program has been proven to reduce bullying in primary schools. “It has a framework that can introduce the program as a new concept to the school or be used to support and enhance an existing school buddy system,” Kent says. The grant is open to every primary school in Queensland. Applications close on Friday September 19. To register, go to ittybitty.bz/BetterBuddies.

Eco-conscious kids take action Environmental portfolio councillor Jenny McKay says the conference aims to inspire the Coast’s future environmental leaders by growing a culture that values caring for the environment. Unitywater CEO George Theo says the Kids in Action program continues to spark positive change on the Sunshine Coast. “Since Unitywater became involved with this event, we’ve had kids planting seedlings at our wetlands, learning about the sewage treatment process and doing water testing of streams,” he says. “Unitywater has a commitment to the community and the environment and we recognise the value in engaging and inspiring the next generation of environmental custodians. “We need to nurture their curiosity and enthusiasm through events like Kids in Action so they can understand their role in sustaining our region’s natural heritage.”

A

bout 300 students from 25 local schools came together last week for the third annual Kids in Action conference. Hosted by the Sunshine Coast Council, through the Environment Levy, the conference is part of the national Target Kids Teaching Kids Week and provides the opportunity for students in year f ve to nine to stand up and become the teachers. Over two days, the children shared their environmental knowledge with each other across a range of subjects using workshops, presentations and displays. Topics ranged from turtles and the reef to toxins and waste.

xcited shouts suddenly erupted and arms pointed out to sea. The rounded back and the blow of a humpback broke the surface a few hundred metres away and then another next to it. It was a mother and a calf and the excitement mounted in the boat. Then they both rolled over and slapped their f ippers on the water, causing shouts and clapping from the excited viewers on board. The ocean was a brilliant deep blue, the sun was beating down on us – it was a beautiful spring day, perfect for whale watching. But this was whale watching with benef ts, because we were about to plunge into that deep blue ocean and join the whales in their territory. There was a mad scramble to zip up wetsuits, don masks and f ippers and drop into the water. Grabbing the f oat line we followed it out, excitedly looking in all directions

above and below the water for the whales. In the distance we could see a f ipper slapping the water, the sound carrying across the swell. There were shouts from the boat, “look down, look down, they’re coming towards you”. I plunged my head below the surface, peering into the depths; bright blue at f rst, dropping off to deep blue and fading to a murky blue black in the distance. But despite looking in all directions, the whales didn’t swim into view. The ocean looked eerily devoid of life. Not a f sh in sight. We were soon summoned back to the boat – the whales had dived and it could be a while before they resurfaced. We motored further out to sea, heading for the ‘whale highway’, the path most whales stick to on their journey north to warmer waters. We were on board one of

Sunreef’s boats and the pointed peaks of the Glass House Mountains were becoming a faint smear on the horizon behind us, when suddenly another pod breached nearby. We repeated the process and hurriedly jumped in the water. The rise and fall of the swell jostled us against each other and the bright colours of our f ippers f ashed in the blue water as we tried to maintain our own space, while peering into the murky depths below. Those still on board were screaming at us to make noise and look down, they were nearby. Swimmers around me started calling and singing through their snorkels to try to engage the whales’ natural curiosity to come and look at us. Unfortunately they didn’t swim into view. So close, but so far. Still, it’s an exhilarating experience, plunging into the water with the giants of the ocean. Sunreef Dive at Mooloolaba was the f rst in Australia to pioneer swimming with humpback whales, starting the popular tourism attraction in July. The venture, the initiative of Philip Hart and his son Daniel, was two years in the making and the pair hopes it will bring more tourists to the region. This was my second swim with the whales and while I didn’t see them below the surface, there is no doubt they were close by. Any interaction is on

FAST FACTS: • Humpbacks swim at about 26km/hr. • They can stay underwater for about 45 minutes before coming up to breathe. • Adults are between 12 and 16 metres long. • They weigh about 36 tonnes but can be as big as 45 tonnes. • A whale’s tail can be up to three metres wide and weigh up to two tonnes. the whale’s terms and there is no guarantee they will swim with you. But what’s not to love about a glorious sunny day on a boat with pods of whales breaching and swimming nearby? It’s an encounter you won’t forget. Swimming with whales is offered by Sunreef at Mooloolaba. All wetsuits and snorkelling gear is provided. The cost is $114. Sam Walker was a guest of Sunreef Mooloolaba.

• Before whaling, it is estimated about 40,000 humpbacks migrated up the east coast of Australia. Numbers were as low as 500 in 1962. • Their population was estimated at about 19,000 in 2013 and is expected to grow around 10 per cent each year. • They have a lifespan of 40 to 50 years. • Adult whales eat in excess of one tonne of krill and small f sh a day. • During their winter migration they fast, living off fat reserves.

It’s economics – but not as you know it. Marginal Revolution was founded, and is run, by economists Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok. Their unique blog covers a range of topics from the quirky – how tattoos impact the job prospects of ex-prisoners – to the more hardcore, such as analysis on the potential economic impacts of Scotland’s independence. Their posts are palatable with plenty of links to more information. ] THE WEEK THAT WAS

Now is the time for a financial spring clean

Darryl Watt is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

I

t is September already and as the old saying goes, “spring has sprung, the grass has risen”. Hopefully your investments have risen nicely as well. While you are probably starting to think about spring cleaning your home, it is also time to start spring cleaning your finances. The f rst area to check is the interest rate you are paying on any debt. This may include personal debt, such as a home loan, as well as any debt associated with your investments. Interest rates are at an all-time low, so check to see if you are getting the best deal possible – you never know unless you ask. You can also take advantage of

these low rates by making additional loan repayments. The next area to check is your investments, including superannuation. Many investments have performed very well lately, and as a result your asset allocation may need reviewing. Put simply, asset allocation is the process of splitting your investments into defensive assets (cash and f xed interest), and growth assets (property, Australian shares and international investments). The asset allocation for each person will vary depending on their f nancial goals, investment time frame, and acceptable level of market volatility and, to some degree, their age. The global f nancial crisis reinforced the importance of regularly reviewing your asset allocation and sticking to your goals in this area. If you don’t know the asset allocation of your investments, it is important to review this area now. Because of positive investment returns, your allocation to growth assets may have increased. As a result,

many people may now be overweight shares or property. This is a good time to review taking some prof ts on investments that have performed well, and perhaps allocating the realised funds to the defensive asset classes of cash and f xed interest. Alternatively, if a review shows that your asset allocation is at your desired level, it may still be appropriate to take some prof ts and diversify within each asset class. This may include investing in areas that are under-represented in your portfolio, possibly healthcare or industrial shares. The Federal Government has recently announced it will f oat health insurer Medibank Private as a public company, and this may be an opportune time to position yourself so you are able to take advantage of this new f oat. Darryl Watt is a Representative of Ord Minnett Limited, AFS Licence 237121 and Ord Minnett Financial Planning Pty Ltd, AFS Licence 237122. Online business gateway opens the way for new business opportunities Local businesses have been presented with an innovative resource expected to make f nding business opportunities much easier – the Sunshine Coast Business Gateway. The gateway is the result of a partnership between the Sunshine Coast Council and Industry Capability Network, or ICN, to develop an online tool that will connect local businesses with opportunities to supply good and services to construction projects and major events on the Coast and further af eld.

Sunshine Coast Council’s economic development councillor Steve Robinson says Sunshine Coast is the f rst council in Queensland and only the fourth in Australia to develop a gateway for local businesses. “Many local businesses and indeed council f rst learned about ICN and their gateway methodology at the start of the construction phase of the new hospital, which has proven to be a great success,” Robinson says. “When the hospital construction is complete however, that gateway

will be closed down and council wanted to have something very similar in place to allow local businesses to connect with other procurement opportunities. “This is the reason for the Sunshine Coast Business Gateway.” Robinson says it is a free service where locals can register their business and projects and opportunities and it will also provide information about upskilling, training and networking opportunities. The Sunshine Coast Business Gateway was launched last week.

Eliminating bias in recruitment practices Although the number of women in senior executive roles is growing, there is still an unconscious bias that many women face when they are applying for a leadership role. The Australian Institute of Management’s head of research and thought leadership, Dr Malcolm Johnson, has commended a decision by the Bank of Queensland to remove identifying information such as gender from resumes submitted for senior roles. “If we’re dealing with a boardroom that is only represented by one gender, whether that is men or women, the organisation is going to be disadvantaged,” Johnson says. “It is about having the best minds around the table with diverse perspectives to get the best outcomes. “If you’re only reaching into one group, by virtue of gender or by virtue of qualif cation or experience, there’s going to be certain blindsiding and that builds for corporate diff culties going forward. “The challenge then is whether those women can get to those roles

by virtue of experience. That’s a very real concern, which is why you can see the value in prescribing that there should be a proportion of women on boards.” AIM chief executive off cer Daniel Musson says AIM has been a long-time champion for change in the gender equality debate and has tailored many of its programs to develop strong female leaders.

LOCAL’S NIGHT AT THE SANDS

RICHARD PERSO PLAYS CALOUNDRA

GO WITH THE GRAIN

Every Monday night is local’s night at the Sands Tavern, Maroochydore. Just show your driver’s licence proving you are a Sunshine Coast resident, buy a drink and you will receive 50 per cent off the food menu. Bookings are essential. If you can’t make it on Monday night, the chef is introducing a new menu on Wednesday. One of the new dishes is grilled gold band snapper with pearl couscous, marinated feta, pickled cucumber, fennel and blood orange butter.

At just 23 years of age Richard Perso has already played at 130 festivals around the globe. His unique delivery blends multiple genres and fuses them into a folky, rocking roots and blues style with didgeridoos. This accidental musician started when a lady at church gave him a beaten up guitar and he found his niche. He played his first festival at age 15 and was playing in New York and Canada at the age of 18. He uses an arsenal of three didgeridoos and four overdriven acoustic guitars to generate his unique sound. Perso will be playing at the Caloundra Surf Club on Sunday September 14 from 2.30pm.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Amaranth is the common name for more than 60 different species of amaranthus. People around the world value amaranth as a cereal, as a leafy vegetable and for its ornamental flowers. It thrives in low-water regions and grows well in Australia. While it is referred to as a grain, it is actually a seed. It is gluten free and higher in protein, calcium and iron than many grains. Cook one cup of amaranth in three cups of water for 30 minutes.

Kawana Waters Hotel is celebrating its 28th birthday next Thursday. To mark the milestone, there will be a ‘magical’ threecourse birthday dinner with magician Mr Andy Cox entertaining attendees with magic tricks and illusions. Thursday September 18 from 6pm. Tickets $45. Call 5444 6699 to book.

THE 39 STEPS Don’t miss The 39 Steps at Caloundra Events Centre. It’s a fast-paced, sidesplitting comedy featuring more than 100 characters, played by four actors. It’s based on the 1935 Hitchcock spy thriller movie and novel by John Buchan. The hero, Richard Hannay, meets a mysterious woman, who reveals a plot to smuggle military secrets out of the country. She is found murdered that night. Hannay races to solve the mystery of the man with the missing finger, with police and international spies hot on his heels. The stage production is the longest-running comedy in the West End and has been viewed by three million people in more than 60 countries. It will be performed at The Events Centre, Caloundra on Wednesday November 5. Tickets $42 full price. To book call 5491 4240 or visit theeventscentre.com.au.

Minimum Chips and seafood a match made in heaven TODD’S GROG TALK Todd Widdicombe from 92.7 MIX FM’S Todd and Sami gives his opinion on the best brews of the week.

SAN FRAN BANS BOTTLED WATER San Francisco has become the first major American city to ban bottled water. In a move that has angered some, plastic water bottles smaller than 21 ounces will not be allowed on the city’s property. The ban will take effect from October 1. San Francisco has a plan to achieve zero net waste by 2020.

You know something potentially bad is about to happen when a mate says, “here, hold my beer”. That statement is usually followed by a mission to steal a road sign, jump off the neighbour’s roof into the pool or de-robe for a nudie run across the Gabba. But we know it’s all fun and games until the beer runs out. That’s why when my wife says we really should be planning for the future, I buy three cartons. If only we lived in America where one Texan brewer is releasing mega cartons containing 99 cans of beer. True story – 99 cans of beer. Every now and then I take the time to care for my body and as we know, wine is an alcoholic drink made from fermented grapes and off cially counts as a serving of fruit.

On rare occasions, I’ve been known to extend that to two servings of fruit, depending on the vintage. But I digress. This week’s brew is a ripper from WA and comes up trumps on so many levels. I’ve always been a fan of Matilda Bay brewing company. They’ve brought us the classic Original Redback wheat beer, the Beez Neez honey wheat beer and the easy-drinking Fat Yak Pale Ale. This time the creative peeps at MB have thrown their hat in the golden lager arena and the result is ace as. Minimum Chips Golden Lager hails from the brewery’s ‘small batch’ line and is an absolute treat. It’s designed for us Coasties, who love our fresh seafood and a refreshing cleanser to wash it down. Created for the ‘sessional’ drinker, its a unique

golden lager that hits the spot with its citrus aroma, cracking hops bitterness and crisp full f avour. It’s a winner winner chicken dinner. So, the next time a buddy on Facebook puts you up to the Ice Bucket Challenge, make sure the ice bucket has a dozen Minimum Chips in it – now that’s a challenge. I give the Matilda Bay Minimum Chips Golden Lager a solid 4.5 out of f ve thumbs up.

Kia’s hot new hatchback ticks all boxes WORDS Peter Atkinson

P

roceed: (verb) – move forward; begin a course of action. pro_cee’d: pretty much the same thing. Kia’s very strangely named hatchback, the pro_cee’d, f ts the dictionary def nition well enough. In fact, it moves things forward very nicely indeed. And in so doing, it moves the fast-improving Korean brand a couple of big steps in the right direction, as well. The pro_cee’d (yes, the lower-case P, the underscore and the apostrophe are part of the silly name) is unquestionably the most impressive model we’ve seen from this ambitious car company in terms of looks, driving dynamics and technology. In fact, its appeal puts most of its Japanese rivals, and even some of those from Europe, in the shade.

It looks smart, has plenty of punch from its turbocharged engine and boasts a cockpit that looks as if it were designed by Apple. The pro_cee’d (let’s just call it a Kia, shall we?) was sculpted at the company’s European Design Centre in Frankfurt, and made its debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. It’s clearly aimed at the European market; in fact, Australia is the only market outside Europe to get this model. It will be offered in two trim levels, the pro_cee’d GT and the GT-Tech, which adds extra goodies such as a sunroof and smart key for an extra $3500. I’d be more than happy with the entry-level model, which costs less than $30 grand before on-road costs, despite a list of standard

equipment that stretches to Recaro sports seats with leather and suede trim, 18-inch alloys, LED running lights, dual-zone climate control air, cruise control with speed limiter, auto headlights and wipers, reversing camera plus parking sensors and Bluetooth connectivity. It’s only the second Kia model in Australia to get this 1.6-litre, turbocharged GDI (gasoline direct injection) engine. The Cerrato Koup Turbo is the other. The non-boosted version of this engine is used widely through the Kia range, although the turbocharger increases its output by more than 50 per cent to 150 kilowatts and 265 Newton metres of torque. Kia claims a top speed of 230 kilometres per hour. Funny names aside, we could scarcely have been more impressed by this fetching little hatchback. It compares very favourably with some of the betterregarded ‘hot hatches’ from Europe – and the likes of Peugeot, Renault, Opel and even Volkswagen should watch out. By Kia’s value-packed standards, the $30 grand you’ll pay to get into this machine is not cheap. But compared with other similarly equipped and similarly performed cars, it’s an absolute bargain. The Kia’s multi-function steering wheel is a work of art, with buttons for every imaginable function, including one to customise the brilliant LCD-TFT instrument display. That instrument panel is the equal of anything we’ve seen from those Euro marques – it’s attractive, informative and hugely functional. The main dial shows an analogue speedo in normal mode, but press the GT button on the wheel and it reconf gures into a series of high-tech gauges displaying turbo boost, torque output and engine temperature. Okay, maybe it’s just a gimmick, but a clever one. Just as gimmicky, but equally endearing, is Continued over>

the little welcome song the car plays when you insert the ignition key. It sounds like a cross between the Microsoft start-up tune and an iPhone. The centre stack is a little dull in presentation, with a surfeit of black soft-touch f nishes, but it nonetheless

exudes an upmarket feel. Kia says it not only concentrated on ergonomics when designing the interior but also ‘haptics’, the science of how things feel and move. Maybe that helps explain the name. Unlike most of its Kia siblings, the pro_cee’d, with its Euro pedigree, has the indicator stalk

on the left of the wheel instead of the usual right. That can make it a little awkward when turning left and changing gears in the manual version, but no more than any number of other Euro models we’ve tested. That six-speed manual, by the way, is pretty good – short throws and a nice, slick action – although more than once we selected third gear when searching for f rst, so it’s short of perfect. The 1.6-litre turbocharged engine is hard to f nd fault with. It’s quiet and smooth in operation and it willingly spins up to the redline when driven hard. It will reach the speed limit in 7.7 seconds. While not blinding, it’s adequate for an engaging drive. Happily, that doesn’t intrude too much on its thirst, which averages 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres. On the road, we were again hard-pressed to f nd too many things not to like about the Kia. Its handling is solid and entirely predictable. The steering is benign

KIA pro_cee’d GT

and impressively direct and it brakes and changes direction without any drama. Rear seat space is acceptable for a car of this size, although not easily accessed. There’s a decent 380 litres of cargo space in the rear, which can be tripled by folding down the rear seats. It’s also impressively safe, thanks to a full suite of electronic driver and stability aids and six airbags. And, of course, it looks a million dollars. Which for $30 grand makes it pretty impressive buying. I just wish they’d f nd another name for it.

Details: Three-door, f ve-seat sports hatchback with fourcylinder turbo-charged engine and six-speed manual transmission. Tech stuff: 1.6-litre, GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine with twin-scroll turbocharger, double overhead camshafts and variable valve timing produces 150kW at 6000rpm; 265Nm at 17504500rpm; six-speed manual; front-wheel-drive. Features: Six airbags; electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, hill-start assist control; brake assist; dual-zone climate control air-conditioning; leather Recaro sports seats, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights with LED running lights; cruise control with speed limiter; reversing camera, parking sensors, 18-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth connectivity.

Hairy roads teach Toyota reps a thing or two

T

oyota Motor Corporation has chosen Australia to conduct an innovative driving and training project that will play an important role for future generations of its vehicles for the world. The project, which started last week, will help Toyota plan vehicle specif cation for future models and provide a valuable training opportunity for its employees. More than 30 employees and executives involved in global development of Toyota vehicles will take part in the project covering about 18,000 kilometres around Australia over more than 10 weeks and will drive 4WD and passenger vehicles, including Corolla, LandCruiser and HiLux, across the continent. The participants will also ref ne and strengthen their intuition in developing vehicles for specif c driving environments by experiencing every conceivable driving surface – from busy city streets to the toughest trails of the outback. Toyota Australia president Dave Buttner says Australia is an ideal place to develop an even deeper understanding of the world’s roads, because its varied terrain is said to offer at least 80 per cent of the road surfaces found on the planet. “It is vital that Toyota’s leading vehicle development personnel get back to basics,

Britto’s bush-bashing adventure MWP’s Britto got up close and personal with the Ford F series super duty pick-up last week. Britto explored the best of the region’s off-road driving during the two-day experience, which took him through the forest at Imbil. It was followed by a beach drive from Rainbow Beach to Noosa. And much fun was had by all involved as they explored some of the region’s great eateries and scenery. The drive took place as a prelude to the launch of the 2015 Performax Ford F series super duty pick-up. To read Britto’s full story detailing his adventurous few days, head to the MWP website at myweeklypreviw.com.au.

experiencing f rst-hand what it takes to continue satisfying customers with ever-better cars,” Buttner says. Toyota Australia executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb says the project demonstrates Toyota’s passion for cars and for Australia, as well as acknowledging the passion of Australians for their cars. He says there are strong historical ties between Toyota and Australia with the company’s vehicles having been sold here for more than 50 years. “Australia provided Toyota with early success for LandCruiser in the 1950s; we were the f rst country to receive Corolla exports; and the f rst place outside Japan to build Toyota engines.”

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Rambunctious ram – you’re keen to call the shots but there’s a big difference between leading others and being plain bossy. Domineering behaviour will lead to dramas so slip on your humility hat this week, as Venus encourages you to be consultative Lamb at work.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Romantic relationships, professional partnerships and money matters are favoured in the stars. It’s also a great week to mix business with pleasure. Emotional connections are intensified. You’ll also gain profound psychological insights into the motivations of a friend.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Twins – are you making the most of your talents? Strive to showcase your marvellous mind this week. It’s also time to talk things through with a trusted family member, as Venus enhances communication and domestic harmony. The weekend stars suit study and community.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] A close relationship has the potential to develop and deepen if you can let go of the past and learn to trust. Expect a surge of creativity on the weekend. Draw inspiration from Lauren Bacall: “Imagination is the highest kite one can fly.”

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] With Jupiter jumping through your sign, learn to put a positive spin on a perceived failure. With energy and enthusiasm, you can turn a pig’s ear into a beautiful silk purse! You’re keen to help others but don’t promise more than you can deliver.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] With the sun and Venus visiting Virgo, it’s your time to shine! Teaching and public speaking are favoured, as you display your leadership skills and creative talents for all to see. Opportunities for advancement come via connections within your local community.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] This week Saturn boosts your business skills, and Pluto power helps you get to the bottom of a complicated domestic problem. Plus destiny surrounds a personal project, as you finally jump off the fence and decide which direction to take. Tap into your natural diplomatic talents.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Are you smack-bang in the middle of a major stuff-up and feeling super stressed? With Saturn moving slowly through your sign, don’t be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. Be inspired by Sophia Loren: “Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life.”

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Spontaneous Sagittarius – you have a natural knack for putting your foot firmly in your mouth. With Venus visiting your career zone, patching up problems with work colleagues will be easier now than at other times. You have more tact and diplomacy than usual.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Don’t come on too strong! Pluto boosts your persuasive powers this week, as you encourage someone over to your point-of-view with a sound and convincing argument. It’s a wonderful weekend for work, business and social networking. Capitalise on new opportunities.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Avoid taking short cuts this week, especially at work. A slap-dash attitude only means you’ll have to do things twice. A pinch of patience and a dash of discipline is needed. Then get out of the house or office and into the great outdoors. An overseas friend is ready to re-connect.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Perceptive Pisces – your intuition helps you find appropriate ways to handle a delicate situation with a worried loved one or a frazzled friend. Don’t underestimate your ability to advise and console. Attached fish – it’s time to zero in on your partner and their needs.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

Well peeps as I write this I’m at the airport about to fly out to Indo where the forecast is six-foot-plus all week with a couple of eight-foot days. So I am a tad excited! What a season the island has had. I have packed my trusty Hypto, boardies and sunscreen. As for you my sorry friends still left on the Coast, it is not good. Actually, it is going to be crap and onshore this weekend. But August was good, real good, So in the spirit of catching some perfect waves I’ll be sure to toast you with a cold Bintang at the end of the day.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream have been taking yabbies and mullet fillet at Cotton Tree, while whiting are on the drift at Twin Waters using live worms. Catch flathead and mangrove jack on lures and live bait from Eudlo Creek to Bli Bli. You’ll find mud crabs in the same area. SURF: You’ll get sand whiting and dart on beach worms and pippies along North Shore, Maroochy. Bream and tailor will be at Pincushion using pillies early in the mornings. Maroochy main beach is returning shovel-nosed sharks and small whalers. OFFSHORE: Tusk fish, sweetlip and squire are at Murphy’s Reef and Caloundra 12 Mile. The northern end of Barwon Banks is the place for snapper and mixed reef fish, while amberjack and trevally are taking jigs at The Blinker. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam looks a picture with golden perch and bass taking shrimps and lures with togas on fly. Somerset is also a top spot for bass, silver and golden perch on deep diving lures and shrimps. Lake Macdonald has been returning spangled perch and bass along with jew on worms.

After you have made the move to Caloundra Rise you’ll wish you had done it earlier as the peace of mind it gives you frees you up to go and do all the things you have been waiting to do. Just a short distance to magnif cent beaches and picturesque hinterland. A community style living with regular events, classes and get togethers.
