ohn Butler, Tina Arena, James Reyne, Baby Animals, Thirsty Merc, Pete Murray, phew! These are just a few famous acts who will be heading to our region for the Caloundra Music Festival. In fact, more than 70 local, national and international artists will be performing at Kings Beach in a couple of weeks. As someone who lives on the southern end of the Coast, I think it’s awesome that the event draws not just visitors to the region, but a healthy dose of those Sunshine Coasters who like to give Caloundra a hard time. They are f nally seeing what I have known for years – that Caloundra rocks! There is always a great atmosphere around this time of year and not just in Kings Beach. Last year I didn’t have to leave the house to hear Daryl Braithwaite singing about his horses. How lucky am I? Admittedly it was only because the wind was blowing in the right direction, but hey, it’s something. For all you others you’ll have to buy a ticket, but get in quick – the organisers expect to sell 26,000 and they are already well on track to shift that many. This week Candice Holznagel has used her backstage pass to f nd out who else will be gracing the stage in our cover story. For all the news on this great event, head over the page. Also this week we have our regular school holiday fun guide, packed with lots of activities to keep the munchkins occupied over the holidays. Head over to page 38 for that. In My Property Preview we are counting down to the Housing Industry Association’s annual awards. Once again, the public gets to vote for their favourite house. Head over to page 52 to check out the f nalists and have your say. Jemma Pearson Rock on!

ore than 25,000 people are set to converge on Caloundra’s Kings Beach next month and celebrate sun, surf and soul at its best. The eighth annual Caloundra Music Festival promises to be bigger and better than previous years, with a lineup set to rival Australia’s largest music events. From songstress Tina Arena to Aria-winning band John Butler and Grammy Award winners Wolfmother, festival organisers have fulfilled the brief of appealing to a broad audience. There will be an eclectic array of 75 performers including 28 local bands, 38 national bands and nine international acts. “We’ve got bigger names than we’ve had before,’’ says Festival Director Richie Eyles. “We’ve also got some quirky acts … not the usual acts you see on a festival bill but it fits. “We want people to bring their kids and their grandparents. That’s what makes us unique. “There is something there somewhere at any particular time to enjoy.’’ This year’s line-up is a who’s who of the Australian music industry, featuring big names such as The Beautiful Girls, Pete Murray, Baby Animals, James Reyne and Thirsty Merc. But it is the international bill that sets the four day, family-friendly festival apart from its competitors. Through the years, festival organisers have built a relationship with New Orleans musicians and once again will deliver an exciting host of talent including soul band The Nth Power and funk act Dumpstaphunk.

“We will tap off this year’s festival with a jam session where all the bands come together on stage and jam,’’ Eyles says. “It’s the internationals from New Orleans and anyone else they can drum up to get on stage and jam with them. It’s really unique.’’ Eyles is not new to the music scene, having worked on the festival since its inception. The former musician has dug deep into his repertoire of musical knowledge to bring something fresh each year. But this festival highlights more than music, he says.

Tourism, Sports and Major Events portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray welcomes the economic benefits the event brings to the Sunshine Coast. “Visitors come from all around Australia and the number of people visiting from overseas is growing each year too,” O’Pray says. “Ticket sales are up from previous years and over 52 per cent of ticket buyers are from outside the Sunshine Coast region.” This year the festival will span from October 3 to 6. It is the second time the event has been delivered across four days and the concept has surpassed expectations. “Our goal is 50 per cent [of people] from outside the region, as that’s where the economic boost comes from,’’ Eyles says. “At the same time, if we are not catering for locals we won’t survive. “In ticket sales alone we aim for 26,000 people and we are on track for that. They all spend plenty of money on accommodation, restaurants, shopping. It goes for four days and people are coming earlier and staying later.’’ For locals who are yet to experience the festival for themselves, Eyles recommends taking advantage of the $35 Monday pass. “If you haven’t tried it before, come and try it. You’ll be hooked.’’ With Monday’s program featuring Joe Camilleri, Richard Clapton and The Strides it will be money well spent.

One of the highlights for me is that area in front of the stage with the kids dancing around. You’ve got teens in the mosh pit and grandma and grandad sitting up the back “Location is one of the biggest things … it’s on the beach, in parklands. “It’s in the downtown area. You can be comfortable, stay in a motel and eat in a restaurant. You can do all that and not miss an act. “The fact you can take your kids and feel comfortable. One of the highlights for me is that area in front of the stage with the kids dancing around. You’ve got teens in the mosh pit and grandma and grandad sitting up the back.’’ These are the things that have assisted in creating an economic boost for the region.

Sustainability initiatives In 2013 the Caloundra Music Festival made history as the f rst Australian festival to say no to disposable plastic water bottles. It was a bold move, yet the BYO H2O bottle campaign was so successful organisers have once again signed on to the Keep it Green initiative. It’s simple – festivalgoers, artists and crew members are asked to say no to disposable plastic and bring re-usable water bottles to the event. There will be no shortage of drinking water with Daisley Plumbing sponsoring multiple ref ll stations across the festival site. Chilled, f ltered water will be available for sale while the Unitywater Hydration Station will provide town water on tap for free. Sunshine Coast divisional councillor Tim Dwyer says the initiative has reduced waste by 20,000 bottles. The result has been commended by environmentalists including Jodi Salmond from

Reef Check Australia. “We applaud the Caloundra Music Festival for their continued efforts to build a bigger, better and more environmentally sustainable festival, year after year,’’ Salmond says. “We believe that every action can make a difference and the cumulative impact of saving 20,000 plastic bottles from making their way into landf ll and waterways is a huge achievement. “What an amazing example of the power of choices.’’ The festival’s Keep it Green initiative doesn’t stop there with vendors required to use biodegradable cornstarch, paper or cloth carry bags, biodegradable cutlery, plates and straws. In addition, sustainable signage is also used. “The festival’s signology team uses recycled and reclaimed materials including fabric remnants, old clothing, fence palings to create signage that is reused year after year,’’ a council spokesperson says. To f nd out more about Keep it Green visit caloundramusicfestival.com/about/keep-it-green.

Another drawcard is the Fringe Festival featuring diverse arts, cultural activities and culinary adventures. Now in its third year, the additional event is on from September 26 to October 6 and encourages residents to stay local for the school holidays and celebrate all that is great about Caloundra. The Fringe Festival kicks off with Bulcock Beach Twilight Markets and continues with the Caloundra Fringe Film Festival, Busking Festival and The Avant Garden Party in Lions Park including live music, art and dancing. A particular highlight is the Festuri Multicultural Celebration held at Lions Park, Kings Beach.

This one day free community event boasts traditional and contemporary performance, workshops, world food stalls, music and dance. Divisional councillor Tim Dwyer says both council-sponsored festivals have a great community feel. “It’s always great to see the festival full of happy people of all ages, shapes and styles dancing the night away,” he says. “The fact that there are so many local volunteers and community groups involved in the event give the whole festival a warm, friendly vibe.” For more information on tickets visit caloundramusicfestival.com or for details on the Fringe Festival visit caloundrafringefestival.com.au.

volunteers: the backbone of the festival since I was little and jumped online to buy tickets. I saw they were looking for volunteers and thought why not.’’ During her f rst year as a volunteer, Fitzpatrick manned the entry gates but after seeing her enthusiasm, organisers promoted her to artist liaison. Next month she will take on the role as artist liaison/ merchandise supervisor. “I will be co-ordinating the merchandise between the managers and selling it,’’ she says. “I work in retail, so that’s the reason they have given me this merchandise position.’’ So what is it that encourages a young woman to give up her time to volunteer? Of course there are the perks of meeting famous people. “Last year I got to meet Eskimo Joe and Boy & Bear. This year I’m keen to meet Thirsty Merc and John Butler. I’m pretty excited for them. It’s daunting but once I got into it, it was so much fun. “This is the best experience I’ve ever had. I currently work two jobs and it’s good to do something that

H

ayley Fitzpatrick, like many teenagers, loves a music festival. But unlike her peers, Fitzpatrick will be rocking the four-day festival in a different way. The 19-year-old will spend about 32 hours volunteering at the October event and she can’t wait. In fact, this will be the third year Fitzpatrick has slipped on a volunteer shirt to devote her time to the family-friendly event. “I moved up here from Canberra three years ago and volunteered on my f rst year here,’’ she says. “I wanted to meet people and get out. I have been interested in music festivals

I’m not doing to get money. I’m doing it for the experience and I enjoy that.’’ Around 500 volunteers will work on the festival either before, during or after the event. Volunteer roles include site set up, bar attendants, customer service, traff c, transport and waste, volunteer hospitality, photography and stage hands. Golden Beach resident Jacquie Rose will work in merchandise and also assist in pre-festival set up. She has been a volunteer since the festival began and believes it will not survive without volunteers. “There are a lot of people who have been there a couple of years who know exactly what to do,’’ Rose says. “It’s a lovely feeling and it’s like a beehive. Everyone’s got their jobs and everyone’s excited. “It’s the experience of being a part of something that’s so successful and fun and nice.’’ Festival director Richie Eyles says volunteers are the backbone of the festival. “We certainly could not do it without them,’’ he says.

Fast Facts: The Caloundra Music Festival is staged at Kings Beach and will run from October 3-6. This is the eighth annual festival. There are 75 artists including 28 local, 38 national and nine international bands. Fifty-two per cent of festivalgoers are from outside the Sunshine Coast region. Around 500 volunteers will work about 16 hours each on the festival either before, during or after the event. Tickets can be pre-purchased at caloundramusicfestival.com or, for a slightly higher price, at the festival gate. The Fringe Festival will run from September 26–October 6.

Local chef’s Antarctic adventure Words: Sam Walker

I

t was a brief glimpse of a vast expanse of ice as the helicopter flew into Mawson Station in Antarctica, but it left a lasting impression on Zane Hacker. The Sunshine Coast chef had spent 12 months in the lead-up to this moment. It was October 2007 and the 22-year-old was about to take up the position of chef at the remote research station on the edge of the Antarctic plateau. He says seeing the dramatic scenery for the f rst time was a memorable moment. And, not surprisingly, it was the f rst of many – the southern aurora is another that stands out, along with wildlife experiences. Hacker, who grew up in Pomona, spent 14 months at Mawson Station where his primary responsibility was preparing meals for all those at the base. That was about 17 people in the winter months and could swell to as many as 100 in the summer. He arrived about one year after spotting a government

advertisement for a chef, which led to a gruelling six-month application process followed by months of medicals and intense training. That included training to be the f re chief on the station as well as an anaesthetic assistant – versatility is important in such a remote area. He was full of awe for his new home but a book was far from his mind. “I had very poor literacy skills,” he says. But every Sunday he sat down and wrote an email to a group of his mum’s friends, who were interested in what he was doing. “It’s written to a group of people that I didn’t really know and by the end of the year I really enjoyed the writing part.” It was one of the recipients of those Sunday emails, a librarian, who suggested the read made good fodder for a book. This was some time after he had returned home and Hacker says his emails, which had been part journal, part memoir, stayed in the drawer for a few more years before With only one supply of food per year to the remote research station, Hacker says it was a challenge to prepare healthy and tasty meals while ensuring supplies didn’t run out

have your precious memories saved forever

Sunshine Coast chef Zane Hacker has written a book called Antarctic Sundays about the 14 months he spent feeding the hungry hoards at Mawson Station in Antarctica

of 2008 and was back in Australia for a brief two weeks when he was asked to do a return trip for another few months. “I was enjoying my Antarctic experience so much, I said yes,” Hacker says. His relationship with the Antarctic didn’t end there. Every summer he returns, not as a chef but as the watercraft operator, co-ordinating the transport of provisions from ship to shore. In the months when he is not travelling the southern oceans, Hacker is back home on the Sunshine Coast working as a food safety off cer. But the great expanse of ice is never far from his thoughts.

Antarctic Sundays materialised, which outlines his challenges and experiences and recipes. “Antarctica is not a very forgiving place at times,” Hacker says. “A 30-second mistake can be quite serious.” “Breakfast, lunch and dinner are almost like little roll calls,” he says. If someone didn’t show up he made calls to f nd out why. Managing the food was another big challenge for Hacker. The station gets one supply of food each year and he had to have a system ensuring supplies didn’t run out and that food in cold storage, such as root vegetables, didn’t show any signs of mould. Hacker left Antarctica at the end

Update your cooking skills at USC

News Previews

T

he University of the Sunshine Coast is playing host to the Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen, an initiative of the Naked Chef, Jamie Oliver Based on Oliver’s healthy living beliefs, the community program begins on September 25 and will run through to early December. The kitchen will offer two f ve-week hands-on cooking lessons for students, staff and locals who wish to freshen up their culinary skills. Comprising a 90-minute class with 12 participants each week, the program will be led by experienced food trainers and will provide a back-to-basics approach on how to cook with fresh ingredients. The fully equipped kitchen classroom also encourages participants to learn about good health and nutrition, as well as picking up some of Jamie’s recipes and cooking hints. USC vice chancellor professor Greg Hill says the campus is

looking forward to the addition of the mobile kitchen. “This high-prof le project will bring many benef ts to Sunshine Coast residents and provide invaluable learning experiences for our nutrition students who will work as volunteers to assist with the facilitation of the cooking class,” he says. Classes cost $10 per session or $5 for concession. Bookings for cycle two open on September 25 and can be made at jamiesministryoffood.com.

MAROOCHYDORE CBD Demolition to remove buildings in Maroochydore’s CBD to make way for a new city centre is complete. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the project is instrumental in encouraging and supporting the economic and community base of the region. “We have an approved development scheme encompassing 53 hectares of council owned land to transform into a future business, civic and residential centre,” he says. “This massive project, which will be

delivered over the next 25 years, will provide a mix of residential, commercial, retail, civic and community uses to develop a thriving and vibrant business district and city centre, complementing and enhancing Maroochydore’s existing business offerings.” Entertainment, exhibition and convention facilities have also been identified as well as recreational areas. Infrastructure work is set to begin in 2015.

There’s a change in the wind WIN News weather presenter and meteorologist Hannah McEwan has the low-down on wind The strongest wind gust recorded in the world is 408 kilometres an hour at Barrow Island, off the north-west coast of Western Australia. Wind develops due to differences in atmospheric pressure, and can form on many scales. Air moves from higher pressure to a region of lower pressure, creating wind at various speeds and directions. Local small scale winds such as a sea breeze can last a few hours, while large scale circulations can continue for days. In Australia, winds move anticlockwise around a high pressure system and clockwise around a low.

The direction and speed of the winds we experience at the surface depend on where the system is positioned in the atmosphere, and how intense it is. With easterly winds, humidity, cloud cover and showers increase along the coast. This is because winds collect moisture as they travel from east to west over the oceans off the east coast of Australia, which eventually gets moved onto land. Winds from the north-east can bring warm, humid weather, as they originate closer to the equator. Southerly winds generally push cooler air from southern Australia or Antarctica. A southerly change brings a temperature drop and rain. In winter the air can be very cold, particularly in the morning, if a westerly is blowing. This is due to the land cooling much faster at night than the ocean, so winds blowing eastward across frosty inland Queensland lead to bitterly cold temperatures on the coast. In summer, westerlies can bring intense heat that builds across inland Australia.

Find out why Anxiety, Nervousness, and Panic Attacks happen to you and how to overcome it! Do you wake in the morning feeling anxious for no apparent reason? Do you f nd yourself with panic overwhelming you through the day when nothing is planned? You might feel nervous about going to work or when the phone rings, when there’s nothing to be worried about. This can go on for months or years, and will cause debilitating emotions, reducing your ability to work, and cause relationship problems at home. There are a number of underlying causes that contribute to symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and poor concentration can also occur. Even though it seems psychological, and you may have issues in your life contributing to it, there are two very common physical problems that cause your symptoms to feel more extreme than they should feel. These affect the nervous system, causing your f ght/ f ight response to over-react. A malicious infection has been found to be a contributing factor in up to 90% of tested patients. It’s

picked up from overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is only detected in specialised testing. This infection releases a toxin affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It’s not often been associated with mental health, though studies show its impact on the brain. It’s passed on very easily, so more than one person in a household may suffer from similar symptoms. You will also f nd some people can carry this infection with no symptoms whatsoever, as it seems to act when there are other health or stress related problems. Often we’re able to correlate the f rst sign of symptoms, coinciding with a stomach bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. It’s passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work. It’s quite easy to treat, when done properly, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. Infections are just one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating anxiety and other mental health conditions. These steps have been proven with testing to improve the brain function immeasurably, without the help of medication.

To f nd out more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or view the free webinar “7 Steps to Freedom from Anxiety & Depression” at www.advancedwellness.com.au. hat can you use as a dinner plate and toilet paper? Paperbark, says indigenous chef Mark Olive. “I call it the outback alfoil,” he explains. “Also, if you go camping and get stuck for loo paper, it’s very soft.” It’s baking hot outside in the midday desert heat, but inside the Ayers Rock Resort I’m marvelling at the versatility of native Australian herbs and spices, learning a thing or two about trees and plants I’d never considered. Later that night, Olive will serve up lemon myrtle barramundi wrapped and baked in paperbark, and I will marvel again at the complexity of f avours to be found in the outback. Australian herbs and spices have been a huge hit in Asia, America and Canada, yet I’d never

tasted them, and Olive wants Australia to embrace what can be found in its own backyard. So the central Australian desert might not be on the doorstep for most people, but a visit to Ayers Rock Resort is a great crash course in foods indigenous people have been using for thousands of years. I try black wattleseeds, which taste like coffee and chocolate and do well in desserts. There’s a complexity to the f avours of native spices that boggles my palate – native thyme, for example, smells like mint and oregano. Native basil makes a good pesto, saltbush and pepperleaf are good for roasting and encrusting nuts, and I discover that f nger limes are nervepinchingly bitter. Quandong, or native peach “sounds like a latex

product”, Olive says cheekily, but makes a delicious jam, which was very popular in the 1940s and 1950s. I’m so wrapped up in the food, I almost forget to raise my eyes to the sight I’ve travelled several thousand kilometres to see – Uluru. That evening we drive for 25 minutes along the f at and winding Lasseter Highway from Yulara, the closest town to the rock, and into the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to sip on champagne and take in the subtly changing colours of the monolith as the sun drops and we dine on a three-course meal, while musician Shellie Morris sings and shares stories. If you’re still wondering what else there is to do but circle the rock, you shouldn’t be – there’s enough on offer to occupy visitors for a week. continued page 24>

<from page 22 One afternoon we visit Walpa Gorge at Kata Tjuta, Anangu for ‘many heads’, ref ecting the 36 domes that make up the uneven formation. Often overshadowed by Uluru, about 35 kilometres west across the park, Mt Olga, the highest dome of Kata Tjuta, is 200 metres taller, and, to my eye, more impressive. Stillness is something you have to embrace in a landscape this extreme, and as the heat begins to wane late in the afternoon, we stroll along the gorge. It’s quiet and empty as we approach a thicket of spearwood at its centre, learning how indigenous men attached spearheads using kangaroo tendons as twine and spinifex resin as glue. It’s a reminder that this landscape only seems unforgiving to the untrained eye, but is full of tools for survival if you only know where to look. Although there’s plenty to keep you busy for a few days in the national park, those who want to see a little more need only hop in the car and head three hours up the Red Centre Way to visit Kings Canyon in the Watarrka National Park. We leave at dawn and seem to f oat across an unchanging landscape of stark silhouettes, acacias and spiky clumps of spinifex, and the desert oaks that look like they were plucked from one of Dr Seuss’ acid-tinged lands, resembling a feather duster. Trees with electrif ed branches dot the terrain, a reminder of the fearsome, explosive power of desert lightning. Lucky then, for the eucalyptus-scented broccoli-

Kings Canyon, Northern Territory, Australia

like heath myrtle, clumped all over to act as a natural f rebreak. Green, red, and blue is the theme of this land, especially at Kings Canyon, an enormous gaping gorge whose soaring 100-metre red walls are a reminder of how insignif cant we are as we hike the rim. Heading back to town, a stop at the quirky homesteads in the area will remind you that the outback continually vacillates between the sublime and the bizarre, as do the characters that call it home. Kings Creek Station, four times the size of Singapore, is home to Snowy the white camel, who once mated with a tent, and Bruiser the donkey that bumps into tourists on their way to gorge on hearty cooked meals served in a wooden shed. But that’s central Australia: right when you think you’ve got it all worked out, it sneaks up on you, just like a head-butting donkey. AAP

] THE WEEK THAT WAS

Where will future growth come from?

Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

S

ince the 1980s asset prices in Australia – shares and property – have been driven by a massive increase in household leverage. Compounding this driving force has been 21 years of continued economic growth. One must then ask whether it is reasonable for this to continue. Examining the above, falling interest rates and availability of f nance has meant households are more leveraged than ever. In the late 1970s, debt to personal income was 40 per cent and by 2013 it had risen to 150 per cent. Rises in real wages over that time frame have also contributed to the growth in debt. The last recession in Australia was the

“recession we had to have” in 1991/1992. To experience positive economic growth over such an extended period is unprecedented. So instead of assuming benign economic conditions will continue unabated, we must ask what could go wrong? Can property prices continue to rise to a level where they are completely unaffordable, when they are already among the most expensive in the world? With f nancials and resources making up about 60 per cent of the Australian stock market, are they a good investment? Bank valuations are at a 30-year high and are relatively more expensive than banks around the world. And while Chinese demand for our resources has not diminished, increasing supply has been putting a dampener on commodity prices. The likelihood of a repeat resources boom is low. In summary, the odds are against a continuation of the trend of large increases in property prices and selected share prices. With term deposit rates sitting around 3.5 per

cent barely beating inf ation, where should an investor turn? In the Australian arena, selected shares and selected property locations may outperform. While an index of shares may have worked in the past, stock selection will be paramount. Similarly with property, it is unlikely all suburbs will experience price growth; some may show decreases. There is another area to which Australians are traditionally underexposed, and that is international shares. Some reasons are low dividends/distributions and currency risks. However, when considering investing internationally, one must take account of total returns, i.e. income and growth. As the investment cycle in Australia matures and other nations around the world continue to grow, opportunities may arise for the astute investor. Get a better Google ranking Some of Australia’s leading Google experts will share advice for local businesses at the Innovation Centre next week. The 90-minute presentation on Tuesday will feature Monte Huebsch, CEO of AussieWeb Local Search and AussieWeb Conversion, the f rst Queensland-based business invited to become a Google Authorised Reseller. Known in business circles as the Google Guru, Huebsch has worked as a search and online marketing professional for almost 20 years and completed the f rst Google Apps training in California in 2008. He helps small-to-medium businesses to gain high Google rankings through combined online marketing strategies. Innovation Centre CEO Mark Paddenburg says Google’s huge market share means all local start-ups and small businesses must have a strategy in place in order to maximise their online presence. “With more than 67 per cent global market share, Google is not only the world’s most popular search

‘Google Guru’ Monte Huebsch will teach local businesses how to achieve a higher Google ranking engine but also one of its most powerful companies,” Paddenburg says. “Businesses operating in the digital technology or knowledge sectors simply cannot afford to ignore it, but we f nd that often start-ups or new businesses don’t have a great deal of capital to spend on paid online marketing activity. “This presentation will give the Innovation Centre’s member companies, and the wider business community, additional insight into how to maximise their performance on Google using limited time and resources.” Tickets for Tuesday’s Boardroom Brief ng are strictly limited, with only a handful of spots available. Every year Australians send four million tonnes of food to landfill – that’s a massive $8 billion worth of fresh and packaged food, leftovers, drinks, frozen food and takeaways. One of the most wasted kitchen foods is bread. Here are some tips to help reduce your bread waste. Try storing it at room temperature and not in the fridge. • Slice bread and keep it in the freezer. • If it is getting old, turn it into breadcrumbs and use to make schnitzel and crumbed rissoles, add to pasta dishes or sprinkle on top of a shepherd’s pie to crisp it. • Croutons – cut up your bread into small cubes, sprinkle with olive oil, a little salt and your preferred herbs/spices and bake for eight to 10 minutes. • Bread and Butter Pudding – perfect winter fair, mix older bread with sultanas, eggs, cream, sugar and vanilla and bake for an easy dessert. SEXY SHIMMER Luxe to the max

At $730 La Prairie’s Cellular Radiance Night Cream is an ‘investment’, but the brand promises it will reduce the appearance of wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin. Plus, the packaging is amazing. It’s on shelves next month, so you have time to take out a second mortgage to pay for a pot!

Laser hair removal Laser Clinics Australia general manager Ian Houlton has the lowdown on laser hair removal. 1. What’s involved in laser hair removal? Laser hair removal is an easy way to permanently reduce hair anywhere on the body. The laser works by directing concentrated light into the hair follicle, inhibiting the hair’s ability to grow. Laser Clinics Australia uses the Candela GentleLase Pro and GentleYag Pro lasers. These lasers expose unwanted hair to a specif c wavelength of laser light and pulse duration which destroy the hair follicle at the root without damaging the surrounding skin tissue. 2. What are the advantages over other forms of hair removal? Laser hair removal is a quick and easy treatment that offers instant results. It

is a far cheaper alternative to waxing and shaving in the long run, with permanent results. It allows you to forget stubborn ingrown hairs and bumpy skin, leaving you with silky smooth skin all year round. 3. What kind of price are clients likely to pay? Prices for laser hair removal start at $13 and vary depending on the area being treated, as well as how many treatments you book. Some of the most popular areas to treat include female Brazilian and underarms, lip, full face, half legs, full legs, snail trail, back, shoulders, chest and stomach.

Embrace your dark side with ORLY’s Limited Edition Smoky Collection of polishes. With names like Darkest Shadow, Edgy and Smoked Out, why wouldn’t you?

got 7 minutes to get fit? The 10-minute, eight-minute, seven-minute workout. Chances are you have seen the apps and have already downloaded them. These mini workouts are becoming increasingly popular with those of us who are time-poor but keen to stay f t. The idea behind a lot of these workouts is that by quickly getting your heart rate going with high-intensity aerobic exercises and resistance training, your metabolism is kicked into gear so you can burn calories straight away. The workouts have a range of exercises that work major muscle groups and include only short rest periods. That combination, say proponents, is what makes them so effective. While you won’t become a serious athlete from working out for just 10 minutes a day, it’s certainly better than doing nothing, and if you eat well, you should f nd that you tone up and become stronger.

4. Is it permanent? We recommend a course of six to 10 treatments to particular areas of the body, performed four to six weeks apart depending on the client’s hair type and skin colour. Laser hair removal offers permanent hair reduction, with minor maintenance needed.

any dads unwrapped hardware, tools and electronics on Father’s Day, so those blanket ads from Bunnings and other DIY retailers paid off handsomely to rack up sales of $154.8 million, says IBISWorld. According to IBISWorld Australia general manager Daniel Ruthven, Australian dads are becoming increasingly comfortable with personal care gifts from aftershaves and colognes to hand moisturisers, rather than socks and ties. Other gift categories such as dining out, gift certif cates and clothing account for a much larger slice of the overall spend, but grooming and personal care sales were the only gift sector to record double digit growth of 12.7 per cent. Spending on fragrance and grooming gifts rose to $35 million this year, in contrast to $31 million

New Kluger still a class leader WORDS Peter Atkinson

T

oyota rarely seems to get much credit for being a thought leader in the motoring industry. That’s probably because we tend to focus on the company’s enviable reputation for building reliable, practical and serviceable vehicles – yes, sometimes even to the point of being boring. But the Japanese giant can take credit for being an innovator, too. Its Prius hybrid, of course, has been at the forefront of the green motoring revolution and the company is recognised as a prime mover in the hybrid market. But its popular Kluger soft-roader is also a market-leader of sorts. When the first Kluger was unveiled in 2000, it was virtually the first ‘faux-wheel-drive’ on the market – a car that was built along the lines of a

four-wheel-drive – but with little intention that it ever be taken off-road. Of course, that’s a recipe that has been copied by countless others, with dozens of choices in this high-riding wagon category. Many, including the Kluger, offer two-wheel-drive variants, so token is their all-wheel-drive status. The Kluger (called a Highlander everywhere except Japan and Australia) might have an odd name but it has certainly found a winning recipe with the market, despite an ever-expanding number of similarly-styled rivals. We tested the Kluger in its ultimate form – the plush flagship Grande 4WD version. We were surprised how much it had improved over the previous model. The new Kluger will be offered in three trim

levels – GX, GXL and Grande – each with the choice of two-wheel or four-wheel-drive (which adds about $4000 to the price). Prices range from a tick over $40-grand up to almost $70,000 for the fully-loaded Grande with all-wheel grip. Significantly, the entry-level GX pricing is about $2000 cheaper than the previous model. At both ends of the spectrum the Kluger shapes up as impressively good value. All models get reversing camera, rear parking sensors, seven airbags, cruise control, air-conditioning, front fog lamps and the ToyotaLink multimedia and information display panel. Vehicle Dynamic Control and Bluetooth connectivity are also standard across the range. Toyota says its main focus was on styling and the fun-to-drive factor – but we were more impressed with the levels of luxury and refinement the model now displays. The basics are mostly unchanged – it’s a bit bigger and offers more flexible interior space than before – but the V6 engine, mated to an effective six-speed auto (previously 5-speed in the old model) are pretty familiar. It has stepped up markedly in the areas of quietness and refinement, which are more reminiscent of the Kluger’s corporate cousin, the Lexus RX350. Interestingly, the two share the same smooth and punchy petrol V6 engine. The Lexus also offers Hybrid and four-cylinder engine variants while the Kluger is a V6-only proposition. Its lack of a diesel option is a bit of a black mark when compared to other models in this category – but it’s nonetheless a very pleasant drivetrain. Ride-wise, the Kluger is competent, if not outstanding. It will never pass for a sports car and was never designed to – but it turns in assuredly and generally remains well-balanced for such a big, roomy machine. Cabin quietness is impressive, with very little feedback from road imperfections, nor from Continued over>

the engine or transmission. Exterior styling of the Kluger follows the rather squared-off corporate look recently adopted by Toyota, but inside is where the Kluger provides the biggest surprise. The cockpit is a step or two above the always practical, but rarely attractive interiors we’ve come to

expect from Toyota. There’s been a noticeable nod to the aesthetics of the Kluger’s cabin, from the stylish yet very clean appearance of the instrument panel to the attractive wood and soft-touch finishes of the dash and the nicely integrated colour touch screen.

The Kluger has brought a new and effective approach to the cabin storage spaces so important in these family-focused vehicles. It features a clever slot-style shelf which runs most of the width of the dash, just above knee height, affording space for all manner of items from mobile phones to garage openers and sunglasses. It works brilliantly. The cavernous glove box also receives some novel treatment with two sliding roller-style covers rather than the traditional hinged lid. And on the Grande model the glovebox is refrigerated, creating a virtual fridge for weekend getaways. The Grande’s nicely-tailored seats, finished in supple leather, are eightway electrically adjustable and internally heated and ventilated for front-seat passengers. The Grande also boasts a welter of electronic driver aides – from blindspot monitors in the wing mirrors to a lane departure warning system that, to be honest, became a bit intrusive with its constant chirping every time we ventured anywhere near an unexpected white line.

There is also a radar-guided cruise control system that doubles as a collision avoidance system ,which will warn the driver, then actively brake the vehicle, if a collision is imminent. The Kluger’s rear-seat passengers are treated to a drop-down screen to allow viewing of DVDs for long trips, with each passenger receiving their own set of cordless headphones. Overall it feels plush, beautifully finished and extremely comfortable – a rung or two above the standard of previous models. That’s just as well because rivals like the new Nissan Pathfinder and Kia’s Sorrento have also lifted their most recent models into this luxury level. Our only other bugbear with the Kluger was the powered rear hatch, which annoyingly didn’t open high enough to allow a tallish user to access the cargo space without ducking awkwardly. I’m sure that could be remedied with some appropriate adjustment. Beyond that, we had few complaints. It might not redefine the soft-roader category, but the new Kluger certainly advances the breed.

TOYOTA KLUGER GRANDE 4WD Details: Five-door, seven-seat full-sized SUV with six-cylinder V6 petrol engine, six-speed automatic transmission and choice of two-wheel or fourwheel-drive. Tech stuff: 3.5-litre, doubleoverhead camshaft V6 with 24 valves and multi-point fuel injection produces 201kW at 6100rpm; 337Nm at 4700rpm; six-speed auto features electronic control and f ex-up torque converter; dynamic torque control on all 4WD models. Features: Vehicle Dynamic Control, ABS with brakeforce distribution, pre-collision safety system with cruise control. Thirst: 10.6L/100km (4WD model). Verdict: The original soft-roader – and one of the best. Bottom Line: As tested $67,990 plus onroad costs; 2WD model from $63,990; entry-level GX model from $40,990.

Young drivers ignoring fatigue

S

hocking RACQ statistics show more than three quarters of P-platers surveyed admit to driving tired, with as many as five per cent falling asleep behind the wheel. RACQ’s survey results also found fatigue is the number one risk to young drivers ahead of speeding, drink driving, distraction and failing to wear a seatbelt. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie says fatigue is responsible for nearly 15 per cent of all road deaths in Queensland.

“Younger drivers are quite aware of the dangers of drinking while driving, texting/talking on the phone and speeding but many don’t see the risk associated with a lack of sleep,” Ritchie says. “Research shows if you drive after being awake for more than 17 hours it is the equivalent of driving with 0.05 blood alcohol content (BAC) reading. “After being awake for more than 24 hours then it is equivalent to having a 0.10 BAC.” Ritchie says it’s alarming to see the messages about fatigue aren’t being heard by the youngest and most vulnerable drivers on our roads. “Young drivers think they’re invincible and the risks don’t relate to them, but that’s just not the case.” “Young people have busy lives with school, work, university and social lives and inevitably a lack of sleep can result. But they must understand the impact it can have on their ability to perform complex tasks, like driving.”

ith the cost of electricity on the rise, more and more Queenslanders are turning to solar power to reduce household power bills. More than 22 per cent of Queensland households currently have solar power, and Peter Patel, director of Brisbane-based Euro Solar, says the majority are families looking to reduce costs. “Electricity prices in Queensland have risen by more than 50 per cent in the past three years, and families are spending thousands per year on power bills,” Patel says. “With solar power a family can invest in a 2.5kW system for as little as $2500 and receive that back in savings within a few years.” Patel says demand for Australianassembled panels is also on the rise, adding that this is evidenced by the recent launch of Queensland’s f rst solar PV panel assembly and testing plant. “At Euro Solar we source all our solar PV panels from Australian Premium Solar, which just opened the state’s f rst assembly

and testing facility,” Patel says. Patel says there is now growing uncertainty over the Federal Government’s proposed changes to Australia’s Renewable Energy Target. “It’s been estimated that abolishing the RET could increase the cost of household solar installation by up to 50 per cent within the next few months,” he says. “As a result we are encouraging households to lock in future savings while they can.”

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Nebulous Neptune sucks the wind out of your sails on Monday and you may feel lost, dazed, disappointed or confused. Don’t despair Aries! Instead, get your creative juices flowing in imaginative new directions. The pace picks up on Thursday and Friday.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Take a break from pursuing ambitious goals early in the week, as you’re liable to feel discouraged and full of self-doubt. The mid-week new moon provides a shot of adrenaline to tired old Taurus routines, as it charges your sense of purpose.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Twins love to tell an entertaining tale, but resist the urge to be somewhat elastic with the truth early in the week. The new moon favors friendships, festivities and fun; plus study and social networking are given a boost by the Jupiter/Uranus trine.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] A mountain of ‘what-ifs’ may emerge on Monday, as your imagination takes over and you question your actions. When it comes to work, business and financial matters, don’t play it too safe. If you hesitate then you’ll miss opportunities.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] When it comes to finances, don’t rely on the help [or advice] of friends. Draw inspiration from fellow Leo, Barack Obama: “It’s only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realise your true potential.”

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] You’re keen to pursue a particular course of action, but is a loved one on the same page? Double-check Virgo, otherwise you’ll find you are veering off in completely different directions. The new moon motivates you to shake up your attitude to money.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Stylish Librans have a passion for fashion. The new moon’s in your sign, so it’s the perfect week for a hot new hairstyle, a marvelous makeup makeover or a wardrobe revamp. If you get carried away you’ll encounter cash flow problems, so pace yourself.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Pluto (your ruling planet) starts moving forwards again, so a personal problem begins to shift and transform. And the power of positive thinking will also help you to resolve it more quickly. Mercury moves into Scorpio on the weekend, which boosts concentration.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] With Jupiter (your ruling planet) in your travel zone it’s time to become the adventurous Sagittarian you were born to be. Draw inspiration from Christopher Reeve: “Either you decide to stay in the shallow end of the pool or you go out in the ocean.”

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Capable Capricorns love to be in control … but are there too many chiefs and not enough Indians in your world? You prefer to call the shots, but cooperation is the keys to successful communication with others this week, as the new moon moves through Libra.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Avoiding complex issues won’t make them magically disappear. Communicate your intentions clearly this week, especially when it comes to friendships. Thursday and Friday look fabulous, when the Jupiter/ Uranus trine propels you into an new world of possibilities.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] If you daydream the week away, then you’ll just end up feeling dazed and confused. Instead, channel your Piscean energy into creative work projects or helping others. The new moon lights up your lust and loot zone so some fish can look forward to a hot new romance.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

Well as I write this I am just about to have some breakfast on the beach in Seminyak, Bali, then throw the board on the moped and make my way to Airports lefts. It is currently five to seven foot but building to 10 foot by the afternoon. Let the floggings begin. Tomorrow I will make an early attack on Medewi but some are calling this the swell of the season. As for the Sunny Coast it seems the complete opposite – flat with onshore conditions. I did warn you to get onto it in August! Alright, best I get cracking.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Very nice-sized bream have been taken this week from just inside the Maroochy River mouth using yabbies and plastics. Flathead and whiting are on the edge of the banks around Goat and Channel islands on the dropping tide. Mud crabs are working up Eudlo and Petrie creeks. Find jew at the motorway bridge on live herring. SURF: Tarwhine and bream will be off the rocks at Pincushion on the high tide. Chopper tailor are working both Maroochy and Mooloolah bar entrances right on dusk using pillies. Dart and whiting are along Maroochy Beach. OFFSHORE: Catch parrot, scorpion cod and sweetlip between The Gneerings and Murphy’s reefs using squid and mullet fillet. Head to the Barwon Banks for snapper, pearlies and mixed reef fish with pillies and squid best baits, also slow sink plastics are working a treat, so are worth a try. Spanner crabs are in good supply east of Murphy’s, some just legal sized but full of flesh. Plenty of whales are swimming south, so be on the lookout. FRESHWATER: With the weather warming up the freshwater fishing will liven up considerably. Borumba Dam is returning golden perch, bass and togas this week on a variety of lures and flies with a few silver perch being caught on earthworms. A ton of fun for the kids this school holidays.
