hen computers came along we all thought we’d become a paperless society. I don’t know what your home and workplaces are like but when you look around the My Weekly Preview off ce, you’ll see we’re as reliant on sustainably grown forests as we ever were. As a society we also still love our magazines and books, though with the rise of eBooks you might be forgiven for thinking the old library is on the way out. Not so, Candice Holznagel discovers, in this week’s cover story. The library is not just surviving but it’s thriving, and in our region libraries seem to be as popular as ever. True, it’s not just about borrowing books and reading free newspapers anymore. Libraries have had to move with the times, but we are in the age of information, and what are libraries but sources of knowledge? Candice has discovered that the Sunshine Coast’s libraries are thriving community centres where locals are encouraged to meet, learn and access free WiFi. Oh, and you can still borrow the odd book or two. Over in local news Sam Walker meets some fantastic locals who are doing their bit to rescue edible food that is on its way to landf ll and help local charities out in the process. It’s a great story, on page 16. For rescues of the animal variety head to our Pets of the Week on page 21 and help us f nd Lizzie and Mendez a good home. Speaking of homes, if you’ve got yours listed for sale and it’s just not attracting any buyers, we have some tips for you in My Property Preview. That’s on page 34 And f nally, keep an eye out in next week’s MWP as we have an exciting little Jemma Pearson announcement. Until then…

more than books In a time when information is available at your fingertips thanks to handheld devices and research is merely a Google click away, you could be excused for thinking that libraries are on the verge of extinction. The longevity of libraries is being questioned worldwide, but what we have discovered locally is not a wasteland of dusty textbooks but an educational world very much alive. Gone are the days of shushing and whispering – today’s libraries are a social hub and thousands of people across the Sunshine Coast are discovering a renewed interest in them. Candice Holznagel visited her local library and what she discovered might surprise you. If you think libraries are dying, well, think again.

t’s a Tuesday morning and Kawana Library is abuzz with singing, squealing and laughter. A 20-strong group of babies and toddlers has taken over the children’s section of the library for the weekly rhyme time session. While laughter and libraries traditionally don’t go hand in hand, this Sunshine Coast facility is successfully breaking all the rules and becoming a hot spot for our littlest residents. Eight-month-old Archie Oakley, who sits among the hand-clapping, wriggling group, is a regular face on the library scene. He and mum Debbie visit Caloundra and Kawana libraries at least once a fortnight and attend baby rhyme time regularly. “I think it’s really important for babies to be introduced to singing and reading at an early age,’’ Oakley says. “Rhyme time is a great way to extend what we do at home. “The library is a great place to meet with friends and keep children entertained. The outdoor areas with toys are great too.’’ Claire Alexander, mum to eight-month-old Lusea, agrees and says being a library member has many benef ts. She and Oakley are part of one of the mothers groups who use library space as a meeting venue. It is the perfect place for growing bubs to fulf l their curiosity and explore different books in a bright and colourful environment. “I have been a member since before I can
remember, with my parents setting me up as a child,’’ Alexander says. “The benef ts are the ability to loan books for yourself and children and to have a space where you can go with your children to enhance their knowledge. The Sunshine Coast Libraries have different displays on a regular basis to teach children about various topics in a fun and interactive manner. “The library will play an important role in Lusea’s life, as it provides an educational setting where she can have fun with other children while learning important skills. I hope that we continue to frequently visit the library not only to pick up new books but to have access to hands-on activities for children and mothers.’’ For both women the library has become a staple part of their family life even in this day and age of technology and fast-paced living. “Books can be expensive and so we can’t purchase as many as we would like to,’’ Oakley tells My Weekly Preview. “Knowing that we can borrow lots from the library and choose our favourites to purchase is fantastic. “I think the library is evolving with the change in technology so I hope my children use it as much when they are older.” So how exactly have our libraries evolved to remain relevant in today’s society? Library Services assistant co-ordinator Jane Stronach says the Coast’s eight library branches

cater for the young and old alike. This is the direct result of a wide range of facilities including book, CD and DVD hire, Justice of the Peace services, computer access and workshops covering topics including literature, f nance and health. Stronach says libraries attract people from all walks of life for many different reasons. “We’re free. Our spaces are vibrant, we have community spaces and something for everybody,” she says. “We try to include quieter spaces still so there is a means for people to do research.’’ Stronach has seen many changes in her 11 years working with Sunshine Coast Libraries. “We are at the forefront of emerging technology … we offer it as it becomes available.’’ She lists the availability of WiFi, iPad, smart phones and computer classes as just some of the resources available on today’s agenda. All you have to do is take a look at the Sunshine Coast Libraries website to immediately gauge just how tech savvy they have become. Members have access to a learn online section or can visit the eShop to purchase books and DVDs. There is also the ability to renew books online, join online or use the eLibrary to download free books, music and magazines. In-house members have the ability to self-checkout items – 1.8 million items or more than half the items borrowed each year are done this way. There is also access to WiFi, computers, photocopying facilities and tech-based workshops such as iOS for Apple users and Android information sessions. The changes are working and the results speak for themselves – 20,000 additional people are joining each year. As it stands, Sunshine Coast Libraries has 145,000 active members who visit the centres, use
the online resources and participate in events and activities. What’s more, says a Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson, 1.7 million people visited Sunshine Coast Libraries in the past year. “When you’re on the Sunshine Coast you’re only ever 15 minutes away from your closest library,’’ says the spokesperson. “Over three million items were borrowed by library members for free in the past year.’’ With the council committing $15 million for libraries and galleries in the 2014/2015 budget and the endorsement of the Sunshine Coast Libraries Plan 2014-2024, the facilities are only going to continue to improve. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay says it is important the community continues to have library facilities that meet their
Claire Alexander with daughter Lusea and Debbie Oakley with son Archie regularly use the library. The Coast’s libraries are vibrant community hubs attracting people from all walks of life to not just borrow books, but learn new skills, meet friends and gain access to technology changing needs. This needs to be done within a strategic framework of what a contemporary library looks like today. “The library plan does this,’’ McKay says. “It clearly articulates the library’s future role of not only providing information but of enabling the community to learn how to access information and knowledge independently. “Technological advancements, community patterns and needs, and evolving staff roles are a key focus of the plan,” she adds. “It outlines the changing role of libraries not

only in the services offered but also in the look and feel of library spaces. It also repositions libraries within the community – reshaping their role as social hubs within the communities they represent.’’ McKay says the adoption of the plan is a vital step in the development of library services through the next decade. “Sunshine Coast Libraries are one of council’s most visible, highly utilised and valued services to the community.’’ continued over>

he Sunshine Coast has ranked seventh on Bookworld’s 2013/ 2014 most well-read cities list. Bookworld CEO James Webber says the Sunshine Coast also takes the title of ‘most health conscious city’ with f ve of the 10 bestselling books health related. “This is a city very interested in non-f ction, with only two titles in the top 10 f ction,” he says. “Most other cities, this trend is reversed.” The most popular book on the Coast is The Fast Diet: The Secret of Intermittent Fasting – Lose Weight, Stay Healthy, Live Longer by Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer. Local wellness warrior Jess Ainscough comes in second with
her part memoir Make Peace with Your Plate. In eBook format, The Book Thief tops downloads. The Sunshine Coast dropped two spots over the past year, with Melbourne and Newcastle pushing ahead. Canberra was crowned the literary capital with Eyrie by Tim Winton leading sales. The annual list was compiled using Bookworld’s Australian sales data of more than 500,000 customers from July 2013 to July 2014.
Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge raised more than $29,000 at its annual garage sale on Sunday. The festivities also marked the non-for-prof t organisation’s 35th birthday, with more than 1000 people joining in the fun. SCAR operations manager Penny Brischke says the event is the refuge’s largest fundraiser of the year. “[More than] 30 gifts were also donated from local businesses for a silent auction which made
over $2500,” she says. There’s still time to make an offer on items. Go along to the refuge’s Make an Offer sale on October 4 between 9am and 1pm at the Sippy Creek Road premises. And if you are thinking of adopting a pet, check out the dogs and cats looking for homes while you’re there.
Mayor invites locals to attend council meetings Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson is urging the community to attend council meetings to witness the decision making process in action, with notice of meetings published on the council’s website. “Anyone who attends council’s monthly ordinary meetings will see that your council deals with matters in a robust, thorough and frank manner,” he says. “That is our role and it is one that councillors take seriously.” The council also has an obligation to protect ratepayer’s interests, which at times requires closed meetings, he says, “At the end of the day, they enable council to consider sensitive matters in a way that protects the interests of ratepayers and to ensure those interests are not compromised by a third party gaining a f nancial or other advantage.”

The 10 main types of clouds are all combinations of three families – cirrus, stratus and cumulus. They are categorised by their height, shape, colour and the weather they bring. A cloud is a visible mass of liquid droplets or ice crystals f oating in the atmosphere, made up of water or aerosols. It forms when air is saturated by cooling or adding water vapour. When there is enough saturation we can get precipitation. Low level clouds form below 2.5 kilometres from the earth’s surface and generally bring some precipitation.

The secret life of clouds
Some of the most common types are stratus and cumulus clouds. Stratus clouds are grey with a uniform base, normally cover the entire sky and bring mist or drizzle. Cumulus clouds are white and puffy with a f at base, and can bring showers or snow if it is cold enough. Cumulus clouds can grow upwards and form cumulonimbus clouds, or storm clouds. They form at low levels but can grow to 16 kilometres high. Winds high in the atmosphere can often f atten the top of the cloud into an anvil shape, pointing in the direction the storm is moving. These clouds can bring rain, lightning, squalls and tornadoes. Check back in a few weeks to learn about mid-level and highlevel clouds.

Food donations bolster local charities

ustralians send a massive four million tonnes of food to landfill each year – and much of it is perfectly edible. It is such a waste of a valuable resources, but the Lions Club of Peregian has set out to rescue some of it and repurpose it to those in need through the Reap food rescue program. Lions Club member and Reap chapter co-ordinator Michele Lipner says the Reap program began operating on the Coast in August. “Reap is essentially the regional program of OzHarvest,” Lipner says. OzHarvest, a for-impact charitable organisation that has been operating for 10 years, rescues excess food from businesses such as food and vegetable markets, bakeries, convention centres, supermarkets, producers and restaurants and delivers it, at no cost, to charities in major cities in Australia. “It’s excess good food that at the end of the day is going to be thrown away,” she says. Once the food is delivered to charities, Lipner says it is converted into meals or packaged as food baskets and hampers for those in need, at no cost. “Reap – the regional programs – are as small or as big as the volunteers can make it.” The Sunshine Coast program has started small, with f ve donors and four recipients between Noosa and Coolum. “We are extremely grateful to Essential Grains,

The children in class two collected almost 200 cans of fruit, vegetables, soup and f sh to help f ll the pantries of participating charities. So far the recipients of the donated food items include the Salvation Army Noosa, United Synergies in Tewantin, Salvation Army Coolum and Peregian Springs State School. However, the program is expected to expand, both in terms of geographical reach and participating donors and recipients in coming months. Lipner hopes other Lions and Lioness clubs and members of the community will get on board the program and more charities will benef t. “There is a far greater need than people often realise for programs that provide this critical safety net for such a cross section of the community,” Lipner says. “While we live in such a beautiful part of the country, there is minimal awareness of the depth and breadth of need in the area.” She says state and federal funding has been slashed to many essential social services and

JEWEL OF MOROCCO The once abandoned medina of Marrakech is today thriving, its narrow lanes and ancient buildings attracting visitors who seek an unforgettable encounter with the exotic.
T
he pace of life in Marrakech with its crowded souks and congested narrow streets can be overwhelming at the best of times, making it all the more important for visitors to find accommodation that is quiet, relaxing and comfortable. Myriad perfumes emanate from stalls selling everything from herbs and spices to tanned leather and fish. Considered the jewel of Morocco and painted in an alluring salmon pink, Marrakech is often referred to as the Red City. The so-called medina, the fortified old city packed with vendors and their stalls, has been an epicentre of culture and trade for centuries. But perhaps what makes Marrakech so exotic is the confluence of Arabian, African and
Traditional Moroccan food
European influences in its narrow streets, among its inhabitants and in the styling of its ancient buildings. It is evening. Tour guide Mustapha Benfaraji leads his group through the medina along the cobbled streets and lanes before finally arriving at a low wooden door which opens to reveal one of Marrakech’s many hidden secrets. Visitors to Dar Cherifa, an artists’ meeting place and literary cafe, are welcomed like old friends. Complimentary mint tea and biscuits are served as a matter of course and conversation is subdued. The walls and pillars are bedecked with paintings by local artists, while a private showing before the opening of an art exhibition is scheduled for later that night. Although situated in the very heart of the bustling souks, Dar Cherifa is an oasis of calm and tranquillity. Built during the 16th century, it is the oldest residential townhouse still standing in the medina and one of the first riads, or traditional Moroccan homes, to be restored. “In the 1990s, the buildings in our medina were run down. There was also virtually no sewage system in place either,” explains Abdellatif Ait Ben Abdallah, considered by many the saviour of the medina. “There was what can be best described as a flight from the medina after Morocco gained
medina side the old A glimpse in
independence in 1956. Nobody wanted to live in the riads anymore. The population moved to the new city.” Abdallah has worked on the restoration of around 100 riads since teaming up with Belgian architect Quentin Wilbaux about two decades ago and is acutely aware of their cultural and historical importance. Wilbaux took photographs of 6000 houses as part of his Masters thesis. “There was no tourism in the medina at that time,” remembers Abdallah, who was considered crazy when he decided to convert a crumbling riad into a guesthouse. Two decades on and there are about 700 restored riads in the medina, offering visitors an incredible array of places to stay. One negative side effect, however, is that this has caused a run on old houses and with it an explosion in property prices. AAP Main image: The UNESCO square Djemaa El-fna at Marrakech, Morocco
Fast Facts Marrakech is Morocco’s third-largest city after Casablanca and Rabat. It is situated north of the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, about 330 kilometres south-west of the Moroccan capital of Rabat. The region has been inhabited by Berber farmers for thousands of years but the city was founded in 1062 AD.

Chances are, if you are on Facebook, you will have seen a random photo appear in your news feed, shared and reposted from Humans of New York, also known as HONY. If you are not on Facebook or you have just wondered what these random pics of strangers are, you might want to check out the website. HONY came into being in 2010 when the site’s creator, Brandon, lost his job and decided to move to New York to take photos of its residents. It started as a project to record the myriad people who inhabit the city. But it grew. This collection of portraits is now viewed by millions every day and has expanded beyond New York to places including Iran, Vietnam and India. It is a fascinating collection about humanity and the many different paths humans travel. To learn more head over to humansofnewyork.com.
Bits and Bytes >> The he Cloud New Zealand design engineer Richard Clarkson has created an internet-enabled suspended lamp and speaker unit – with a difference. Called The Cloud, it is designed to copycat a thundercloud in appearance and entertainment, is made of hypoallergenic f bref ll and includes speakers and a Bluetooth connection. The Cloud also detects the user’s presence and produces a lightning and thunder show dictated by movement. The colour-changing lights also adapt to lighting and brightness. This unique way to stream music will set you back a penny though. It costs a whopping $3400. For more information visit richardclarkson.com/cloud.

Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Pets of the Week
What I love to do most is: to lie around and take life easy. Why I want to be a part of your home: I came from the pound to the refuge and I would adore to be part of a family. What you should know about me: I am a very good-looking domestic shorthair cat aged seven years. I have a loving nature and I am okay with other cats and do not mind being picked up. I am de-sexed, vaccinated and micro-chipped.
Australian silky terrier cross Lizzie female 6 years old
What I love to do most is: play with my ball, but I don’t like to share with other dogs. Why I want to be a part of your home: I came to the refuge because my elderly owners went into care. I would love a new home where I am the centre of attention. What you should know about me: I prefer a quiet home and I have always been the only pet so would like to remain this way. I am de-sexed, micro-chipped and vaccinated and require regular brushing.

After taking antidepressants for 20 years, she was shocked to find there was a cause for her depression that was never found. Within weeks she was excited, happy, motivated and amazed to get her life back. When she f rst began antidepressants, she felt a lack of interest in life, low mood, irritability, anger, anxiety and insomnia. Exhaustion then caused more anger and irritability. With a young family, the strain was too much, so she went to her GP and began antidepressants, which worked well, but needed to be maintained for a normal life. When I f rst saw her, she had responded to an ad about depression and was curious about coming off her antidepressants. After asking a few questions, and scanning her brain and body for inf ammation, infection, hormone and brain chemical levels, it was clear what the causes were. Nothing traumatic had happened during the time the depression began, she was relaxed and happy as she had returned from an overseas holiday. This always rings alarm bells, as there are bacteria in water overseas that can cause depression, so we organised a bowel test. We also found that when she was moody, it f uctuated, with bouts of sleepiness, and fogginess throughout the day. This usually indicates a relationship with food, as the
Depression and other mood disorders affect one in four Australians. It is not a disease that has unknown cause, like many believe, and can be resolved quickly. symptoms start between meals, f rst irritability and fogginess, then sleepiness, then back to normal. When food does not agree with you, it can cause depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia and low thyroid function. The liver detoxif es the offending food, by using enzymes which are also involved in making serotonin in the brain. This results in the brain under-functioning leading to low moods. One of these enzymes is responsible for producing melatonin for sleep, so insomnia follows. The thyroid drops in function during a food reaction. In women this will cause the progesterone to drop, which creates an oestrogen dominance problem leading to PMS, menopausal symptoms, and more hormonal imbalances including severe mood swings. We found with testing she had a few offending foods she was eating regularly, and when we received the results from her gut test found she also had a bacterial overgrowth affecting the brain. After treating these, starting a good diet, and raising serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine naturally, she was feeling amazing within weeks.

The network consists of insurance brokerages that generate annual gross written premium of $4.3 billion from two million policies. As a leading consolidator, it has equity interests in 54 broking businesses, nine underwriting agencies, a life broking business, a reinsurance broking business, a premium funder and two ancillary service organisations. The Australian Government’s $484.2 million Entrepreneurs’ Infrastructure Program is enabling businesses to access the expertise to build stronger connections between industry and science. Industry minister Ian Macfarlane met with Coast business representatives from the food industry this month to discuss the benef ts to manufacturers of building better links between businesses and researchers, including better access to global markets. “Too few Australian businesses

f ow generation. We expect annual earnings growth in excess of 10 per cent, driven by several factors: premium growth from existing businesses; eff ciency improvements through back-off ce automation and broker practice consolidation; and acquisitions of small brokers on terms that prove prof table for Steadfast. Steadfast delivered a 2014 f nancial year result broadly in line with prospectus. There were some minor variations from estimates – broker margins were wider and tax expense was lower, while corporate costs were higher. Of greater signif cance for the company’s prospects were completed and planned acquisitions totalling $128 million since listing in August 2013. Most prominent of these acquisitions is a proposal to secure the agency business of listed insurance group Calliden for $55 million. Steadfast expects this business will produce more than 10 per cent
and manufacturers tap into our scientif c and research resources to solve a problem, enhance their productivity or reach into new markets,” Macfarlane says. “Australia currently ranks last in the OECD countries on business research collaboration. “For smaller businesses the biggest hurdle can be f nding the right people with the right skills to link a new product with a market or to help identify what their R and D needs are and then f nd the researchers who can help.” He says the Research Connections component of the program will help small and

earnings per share accretion in its f rst full year of operation. The acquisition process entails Steadfast acquiring Calliden for $105 million then on-selling Calliden’s general insurance operations to Munich Re, a global reinsurance company. It will be funded by a cash consideration of $94.1 million paid by Steadfast and an $11.3 million special dividend from Calliden. But Steadfast’s net cash outlay will reach only $55 million due to the on-sale to Munich Re. Steadfast will retain the agency business, which contains eight separate agencies. Even after this sizeable acquisition, Steadfast remains committed to acquiring brokers and underwriting agencies. The group will also consider ancillary businesses that clear strict criteria that acquisitions must be earnings accretive to shareholders within the f rst year. We estimate the group has further acquisitive capacity of $40 million in the immediate term. Since listing, the stock had
medium-sized businesses with this process by offering support to identify new opportunities and brokering services to link businesses with researchers. “Food and agribusiness are chief among Australia’s areas of competitive strength, where our high standards and industry expertise give us an edge over our competitors. “Industry development on the Sunshine Coast shows the diversity of the food processing sector particularly through a focus on specialist and high value-added products. “However, to make sure we
underperformed the broader market on the basis of concerns about the broader insurance cycle and a lack of acquisitions. We believe the soundness of the 2014 result and news of acquisition progress alleviates these concerns. Another concern was the potential overhang of shares issued to Steadfast network brokers as part of the pre-f oat restructure, which were escrowed until August 2014. A sale facility was established to absorb these shares, thereby removing the impact on the stock price. The stock is currently trading on valuation multiples that are not too demanding and the dividend stream will grow in line with prof tability. The potential gain represented by our 12-month target price of $2 is also compelling. Anthony Ward is an authorised representative (no 427051) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. Spunky new compact SUV a game changer WORDS Peter Atkinson
I
s this the future of the SUV? Perhaps, according to Mercedes-Benz. And the maker should have a pretty good idea – it all but invented the SUV category in the 1990s with its f rst M-Class off-roader. Almost two decades later, it seems Benz is reinventing the category. Benz says its new compact SUV, the GLA, is a “wanderer between automotive worlds”. Translated, that probably means it’s almost as much a hatchback as it is a pseudo off-roader. But if recent reports are correct, it is also a
marker of where the German marque’s off-roader and soft-roader design language will go in future. The GLA is, in effect, an SUV based upon the compact A-Class, hence the A in its name. We can expect the current M-Class to become known as GLE – an SUV based upon the E-Class executive sedan. And the car known as the GL will become a GLS, signifying its sizing and pricing aff nity with the f agship S-Class saloon. If all that comes to pass, we can look forward to an exciting future from the folk at Stuttgart. There’s no question the GLA is different from
just about any Mercedes we’ve driven before, and is one of a number of models reshaping the way we look at the soft-roader category. The GLA’s looks are deceptive. It’s more car-like and more sporty in its stance than either of its German rivals or those from Japan, for that matter. One acquaintance looked at the GLA and asked, “Is it one of those new rally racing things?” Well, no. In fact our test machine, the diesel-powered GLA200, is fairly modestly performed. However, further up the tree there’s a more powerful GLA250 with punchy turbo petrol four-cylinder engine, an all-new 4Matic all-wheeldrive system; plus the f re-breathing GLA45 AMG, which boasts the most powerful fourcylinder engine in history with acceleration to shame many sports cars. As I said, the GLA is rewriting the SUV rules. Its appearance, inside and outside, breaks new ground. While delivering slightly higher ride than a sedan or hatch, the GLA looks well-grounded and sporty. Minimal overhangs, its high hip-line and strong contouring of most panels emphasise its athletic intent. Inside, it feels modern and fresh with a vivid display screen taking pride of place atop the centre stack; f ve turbine-style air vents and nicely designed knobs and switches. The instrument panel is crisp and clean and includes a useful multi-information display for trip, economy and navigation info. Despite its compact dimensions, the GLA feels airy and roomy inside, with generous rear-seat space and a decent 421 litres of cargo space, complemented by a clever underf oor storage section and handy side pockets. The GLA uses the same stalk-mounted gearshift lever as in some of its more expensive siblings, which becomes quite intuitive once you are used to it but there’s the risk of f icking the car out of gear while searching for the indicator stalk. There’s also an electronic push-button park brake, which along with the absence of a gearshifter, means the centre console is free for additional storage space. We drove the entry-level GLA200 (from $47,900 plus on roads)
representing solid value in the Mercedes domain with standard inclusions such as 18-inch alloys, MapPilot navigation, electric tailgate, dual-zone climate control air, active parking assist and reversing camera. The base model’s 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel is
functional enough but hardly one to write home about. Its 0-100 kilometre per hour acceleration time of 9.9 seconds is evidence of that. The payoff is a tiny thirst of just 4.6 litres per 100 kilometres. The oil burner is also a little harsh under heavy acceleration and on start-up – something experienced frequently thanks to the inbuilt stop-start system that kills the idle at traff c lights. Dial up sport mode with the push of a button on the centre stack, however, and the engine is more responsive and punchy. The GLA200 is driven through the front wheels only – step up to the GLA250 (an additional 10 grand) and you’ll get 4Matic all-wheel-drive plus more power and standard features. All models enjoy high-end safety features such as a frontal collision avoidance system, blind-spot assist and Benz’s class-leading Pre-Safe pre-collision occupant protection system. We had the opportunity to drive the GLA directly after we tested one of its main competitors – the Audi Q3 – and it made for an
interesting comparison. The Audi, despite its smallercapacity turbocharged petrol engine (of just 1.4 litres) was clearly the more spirited performer. The Benz, though, offers substantially more style and appeal, and delivers a slightly more resolved, pleasant ride. The machines are comparable in interior space, although the Audi’s higher-riding, more upright stance gives better all-round vision. The GLA sits closer to the ground for a sportier, more engaging drive. Its seven-speed dual-clutch auto is a good one, too, providing nicely calibrated gear changes and helping deliver the GLA’s frugal 4.6 litres per 100 kilometre thirst. The transmission can be adjusted to three modes (economy, sport or manual), and a fourth offroad mode is available on its higher-spec siblings. That might tempt a few owners to venture off the beaten track, although most of these vehicles will spend the majority of their time within city conf nes. Which, when it’s all said and done, truly is the future of the SUV.
MERCEDES-BENZ GLA200 TFSI Details: Five-door, f ve-seat compact SUV with four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and sevenspeed automatic transmission. Tech stuff: 2.2-litre, common rail fuel-injected four-cylinder turbodiesel engine produces 100kW at 3400-4000rpm; 300Nm at 1400-3000rpm. Features: Five-star safety rating with frontal collision avoidance system, blind-spot monitors; Pre-Safe pre-collision system; active parking assist with reversing camera; colour screen with satellite navigation; electronic tailgate, electric windows and mirrors; dual-zone climate control air-conditioning, cruise control. Thirst: 4.6L/100km (combined average). Performance: 0-100km/h in 9.9 seconds. Verdict: A funky, spunky, punky Benz. Bottom Line: $49,600 plus onroad costs.
Our finest selection for your peace of mind. Now at Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast.

What to do when it just won’t sell Your house has been listed for sale for months with no sign of a buyer. So what can you do to get things moving? A lot, actually. Update your marketing Chat to your agent about your current marketing strategy – remember if no one knows your home is for sale, you can’t expect potential buyers to flock to open homes. If you have been relying on one type of marketing only, look at the other ways to get the word out. Take a look at your ads and consider updating those too with some new images of the home. It pays to chat to an experienced property photographer – your home might look incredible at night, for example, while all your ads feature photos taken at midday. Get the experts to advise you – remember, that is their job.
Tart up your home It’s worth asking your agent, neighbours or even buyers who have passed on your home, what you can do to improve it. You’ll have to be brave as no one likes criticism, but it may be a simple thing like the backyard was overgrown or the front door was shabby. Spending a few weeks painting, landscaping and installing a new letterbox could really lift your property. These changes don’t have to be large or expensive to really make a difference and ensure a sale. You will want to secure an offer that takes into account the price you have set and then whatever else you have invested into the home, so a big renovation is probably too much at this stage, but it is worth getting advice from an expert.
TIPS. Take time out If you really don’t have to sell, one of the best things you can do is take your home off the market. Buyers are savvy and spend lots of time researching – those who you are hoping to interest now probably saw your home when it was first listed six months ago, and if you haven’t changed anything, it’s become old news to them. If they didn’t want to buy your property then, why would they want it now when it’s been sitting on the market unchanged for all this time? Taking your home off the market and waiting for those buyers to move on, then placing your home back on the market so it is seen by a new group of buyers is wise. So you don’t feel powerless over the process while you are waiting to relist, spend this time adding value by landscaping the outdoors and painting a feature wall or two.
Don’t forget when selling: • Be open to advice from your agent and other experts who are experienced in buying and selling property. • Keep the lines of communication open – ask your agent what sort of feedback he or she received at open homes. • Don’t forget your marketing – it’s an expense no home owner wants to make, but it really does pay to advertise.
What about renting? If you’ve bought elsewhere and just have to move, it is worth considering renting out your current property. The income generated from renting could be enough to cover the property’s expenses and even provide you with a small income. Remember there are lots of tax implications of owning more than one property and of course you’ll have double the amount to pay on rates and insurances. But it is worth chatting to your financial planner, solicitor and a property manager to see where you stand.
Reassess the price Overpricing tends to be the most common reason why a property won’t sell. When it comes to property it is the buyers, and not the sellers, who determine the value of a home. So take a good hard look at your price. While you are attached to your home a buyer is not, so what you think it is worth might not be what others are prepared to pay. Buyers will be researching the market and comparing your home to others that have recently sold or are for sale, so it’s a good idea for you to do the same. Adjusting your price doesn’t necessarily mean taking a huge hit either. Price is a psychological thing for many people – so shaving off several thousand dollars might be all your need to pique the interest of a buyer who wouldn’t have looked at the home when it was listed for $500,000 but might be prepared to look now it is listed for $495,000. Work with your agent to settle on another price.

One lucky vendor will win a car
New addition at Property Today
R
E/MAX Property Sales agent Jason Stock wants to give away a car. Stock tells MPP he is giving away a brand-new Mitsubishi Mirage “because it is fun, and exciting. It is a bit of a marketing promo but also I had a good year last year, and that was only my second year in the business. I just felt like giving something back, so the idea of ‘win a car’ was born.” The competition is limited to the f rst 30 people who list their homes and sell with Stock during the campaign. He says two tickets have already been given away. The campaign ends when the 30th property is sold. “I have teamed up with Cricks at Nambour. Dan at Cricks has supplied me with a car to drive around for the period of the campaign [to help promote it].” But Stock is paying for the brand-new prize car from his own pocket. “Where there is an
Dan Hunt and Jason Stock are ready to give away a car opportunity to do something different, I do it,” he tells MPP in relation to his real estate marketing style. “The ‘win a car’ promo was about the marketing but also a way of showing the general public that I wasn’t an agent where it is all about me. I became an agent because I was on the wrong end of a bad one. So I just think differently,” he says, adding that if that means buying furniture
elderspalmwoods.com.au
to f ll an empty room or thoroughly cleaning a property to get ready for an open home, he will do it. Stock’s ‘win a car’ promotion started a few weeks ago and he says that there is no expiry date, but once the 30 tickets have been handed out he will hold an event to announce the winner. TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Being super possessive about a person (or material possession) will only lead to a whole lot of trouble this week, Taurus. Strive to be less precious about what you own and who you love. Attached bulls – your partner is looking to you for some sensible advice.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] A situation with a child, teenager, lover or friend looks chaotic, as you misinterpret their actions. Ask for some clarification before you jump to hasty and half-baked conclusions! Keep in mind that Mercury is retrograde until October 26.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Crabs will be anything but congenial this week as the lunar eclipse cranks up your cantankerous, crabby side – and volatile sun/Venus/ Uranus/Mercury aspects highlight worries at work or havoc at home. So you’ll need to be on your toes!
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] The lunar eclipse causes chaos mid-week, as lions lurch from one drama to another. If you are too hasty you could find yourself headed for an accident so pace yourself, and take particular care when walking and driving – no distractions!
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Retrograde Mercury continues to confuse communication (until October 26) so be extra careful Virgo when talking, texting and sending messages via social media. But, if you obsess over minor matters and meticulous details too much, then you’ll overlook the bigger picture.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Peace and harmony are a faraway dream this week Libra, as the lunar eclipse, Pluto and Uranus stir up problems. Expect the unexpected, and try to stay calm. With the sun, Venus and retrograde Mercury all visiting your sign, comfort eating is a danger.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Mid-week looks intense as the lunar eclipse and Venus/ Pluto square stir up inner compulsions, submerged secrets and hidden resentments. Plus you could become possessive about a person or place. Strive to keep things in perspective.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Prepare to inspire others with your high spirits and contagious enthusiasm! Jupiter boosts confidence levels and puts extra wind in your Sagittarian sails. But your affections are changeable and erratic, as you do too many things and catch up with too many people.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Family fiascos have got your head in a perpetual spin but do your best to sort out simmering domestic dramas. Your motto for the moment is from birthday great, Desmond Tutu: “You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.”
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Avant-garde Aquarius – expect the sparks to fly this week, as the lunar eclipse fires up emotions and Uranus heats up your hasty, rebellious side. Try to slow down – otherwise you’re likely to over-react and do something that you later regret.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Hey fish – a fresh fiscal cycle calls for a radical new approach. Cut the dead wood and start building firm financial foundations by taking on a second job, setting up a savings account, paying off debt, employing an accountant or fine-tuning your portfolio.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] The lunar eclipse is in your sign, so aim to be a pioneer. Be inspired by fellow Aries, Fred Hollows, who encouraged others “to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition.”

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
The devil wind will be striking over the weekend but there should be some waves around. A sense of humour might be required. Best get in early in case the weatherman has it wrong! As if that ever happens! Ha! What a gig – even when you’re wrong 50 per cent of the time you keep your job. If you have had any friends in G-Land over the past month no doubt you have been tortured by the updated pics on Facebook! Just plain cruel. Oh to be a goofy footer. The Quiky Pro should be wrapped up now so it will be interesting to see if Medina got knocked out. Parko and Fanning are still in the hunt.
