Editor’s E letter
H
ow to start this column? This week’s editor’s letter is the most diff cult one I have had to tackle so far. That’s beca because it’s my last. R Regular readers will be familiar with tthe younger Pearson’s antics, and aas he approaches his seventh birthd birthday it’s really hitting me that he won won’t be this small – or this eager tto hang out with his daggy old mum – forever. I want to spend more tim time with him, and I’m incredib incredibly lucky that right now I have the opportunity to do just that. So I aam stepping aside, and from next wee week someone else will be taking on the job of steering the My Weekly Preview w sh ship. I can’t let go completely, and will st still be part of the team as a contributor contributor. But my time in the hot seat has come to an end. It’s great to go out on a high. We have a great team at the magazine and we’re excited about the future. Thanks so much for jjoining me on the ride so far, but stick around as I am sure we’re only going to get bigger and better. This week’s cover story is a great one to leave on, as we talk about women who work in the construction industry. Kate Lees has chatted to three women who are loving life in the trades and blazing a trail for more women to follow. A lot is being done to make the industry more inclusive. Find out more over the page. Thank you so much for having me in your homes every week. It’s been an Jemma Pearson absolute pleasure.

WOMEN WITH TOOLS While women working in the male-dominated construction industry are still few and far between, attitudes are changing and a growing number of intrepid women are entering the former no-go zone with gusto. By Kate Lees and Jemma Pearson.
O
nly a couple of generations ago, the career options for most female school leavers were limited to teaching and nursing. But while today’s women enjoy choice that their grandmothers never had, there is still a career path that few women explore – construction. Def nitive numbers are hard to obtain, but it’s estimated that among the trades such as plumbing, building, rendering and carpentry, as little as three or four per cent of those doing the job are women. But a determined group of tradespeople, industry representatives and young women themselves are eager to change that. The Housing Industry Association’s Sunshine Coast & Wide Bay branch manager Stuart Collins is part of the Sunshine Coast Technical Trade Training Centre (SCTTTC) steering group which “aims to increase the number of young females pursuing career pathways as a career of f rst choice”. He tells MWP, “This group includes prominent Sunshine Coast business women that operate in the industry such as Chris Cameron (Rockcote), Sam Sheppard (Buildmore) and Deb Johnson (Build Suncoast Green) amongst others.” Collins says as a representative of the industry association that invests in training for young people, he feels it’s important to help tackle the problem of women’s underrepresentation in construction.

Th are a lot of females who are There involved in estimating, client liaison, surveying or engineering. But certainly when it comes to the trades, we would like to see more women take part Stuart Collins He says it is unacceptable that the numbers of women in the industry are as low are they are. The problem, Collins says, may be the result of the stigma that is attached to women entering trades, “but a lot of work has been done to educate [young women] that construction is a viable career option”. He adds, “Outside of the trades a lot of women are involved in the construction businesses in para-professional careers. For those, male or female, who don’t want to necessarily dig trenches or climb on roofs, there is a whole range of occupations you can still be involved in. There are a lot of females who are involved in estimating, client liaison, surveying or engineering. But certainly when it comes to the trades, we would like to see more women take part.”
He adds that today’s women entering trades have better mentoring available, from trailblazers such as Sam Sheppard, who is a builder, and Chris Cameron, who works in the manufacture and supply side of the industry. Collins says it is important to engage women in construction so the industry is able to employ the best workers possible, and that women nervous about entering such a male-dominated sphere have a lot of reason to feel comfortable. “I certainly believe the culture has changed within the industry,” he says. “The industry is far more accepting of young workers and women. That is why organisations like HIA and the SCTTTC screen potential employers, that the kids receive the care and mentoring to ensure they have a good experience.” M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U
7/10/2014 2:28:05 PM
He cites the SCTTTC’s recent Try-a-Trade day – which gave school students the opportunity to f nd out more about career options – as an important way to engage with those who might not otherwise have considered a career in trades. He says about a dozen schools across the Coast are involved with the SCTTTC to keep young women informed and educated about their options. “We need to roll out more of these initiatives. Try-a-Trade was highly successful.” He adds that irrespective of gender, these initiatives are about f nding the right person for the right trade, and that it makes sense that there are women out there who have the desire and skills to enter trades, whether they are school leavers or women keen for a career change. “Taking a broader outlook, we [the residential construction industry] are one of the pillars of the economy. We are keen to ensure we don’t have skilled trade shortages. It is important to invest in young workers. We just won’t have enough workers for the future if the focus is just on young men.”
Taiya Verran The future is looking bright for Caloundra High School student Taiya Verran. The 17-year-old has kick-started her career by spending the past two years on the tools at the Sunshine Coast Technical Trade Training Centre. The centre provides professional training for local year 11 and 12 students who are considering careers in building, development or sustainable energy either on the job or at a managerial level. The courses are offered by partners Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE and the University of the Sunshine Coast. Verran has honed her practical skills, completed theory examinations and has learned about important health and safety precautions. In a matter of weeks, she will graduate from SCTTTC with a Certif cate II in Civil Construction. “After two years of study, it’s nice that it’s coming to an end,” she tells MWP. After her training, Verran hopes to gain a
• Construction is the third largest employment industry in Australia, capturing 8.8 per cent of the Australian workforce. That’s more than 1,016,000 people.
Milly Robertson
• Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS] f gures show the number of female technicians and tradies nationwide has increased 20 per cent since 1996. • However recent ABS data shows the pay gap between men and women is widening, largely due to the large salaries in the male-dominated mining and construction industries. • A recent report from Graduate Careers Australia revealed the biggest gender pay gap is in architecture and building, with men being paid an extra $6500 a year. • The building and construction industry is the second most maledominated industry after mining. plumbing apprenticeship on the Coast, a path that should lead to her ultimate goal as a plumbing inspector. The Caloundra resident’s passion for trade came from her Dad, who was also in the plumbing business. Verran says the construction industry appealed to her for its diversity and practical nature, although she admits there is also a physical demand in the work. Verran is the only female in the class of 15 students but it doesn’t faze her. She urges young females to give trades a go, especially if they are unsure of their prospects after school. “If you want to go for it, do it,” she says. “Don’t let anyone intimidate you.”
Not many teenage girls spend their days on a building site, but Milly Robertson is an exception. The 18-year-old’s love of construction is evident and she says her lifelong dream is to be a licenced carpenter. “I have always been passionate [about carpentry] and it’s always been my goal,” she tells My Weekly Preview. Earlier this year Robertson completed a pre-employment program with East Coast Apprenticeships and was offered a position in its group training organisation. Apprentices are paired with local companies to learn their selected trade and Robertson is currently in her f rst year of a four-year carpentry teaching program. Her interest in the construction industry spiked in high school after she applied to participate in the Sunshine Coast Technical Trade Training Centre’s Creating Constructive Young Women initiative. It was a natural progression for the former Meridan State College student to enrol in SCTTTC’s Doorways to Construction program, where she learned and perfected the skills of carpentry and bricklaying. In her senior year, she was one of the f rst females to complete a Certif cate I in Construction and a Certif cate II in Resources and Infrastructure at SCTTTC. Robertson says she would also like to continue her studies at TAFE and obtain her building licence. She is eager to excel in her profession and says although it’s a traditional male-dominated f eld, young women should feel supported in their aspirations. With the construction industry a widely accepted and legitimate career option for women, Robertson also urges those who are interested in a trade to give it a try. “If you have a dream, just go for it,” she says. continued over>

Helen O’Farrell Most people imagine the typical construction worker as a man in King Gee overalls, but Helen O’Farrell is breaking the mould. The mother of three is a renderer by day and a beauty therapist by night. The Sunshine Coast resident juggles family life with her husband’s business, Alpine Coast Rendering, while continuing her job as an at-home beauty therapist. She has also completed business and f nance certif cates and manages Alpine’s accounts. O’Farrell says self-employment has its advantages and allows for f exible working hours. “You learn how to manage and create boundaries,” she says. The renderer has more than 13 years’ experience in trade and says her husband encouraged her to enter the industry after she f rst worked with him on site. She has since learned the craft from her husband and father-in-law. The O’Farrell family renovated their home and also worked on various family properties. Alpine is currently completing the rendering of a school but also work on
FAST FACTS residential homes from Gympie to Brisbane. Although construction is a male-dominated f eld, O’Farrell says she feels at ease with her colleagues on-site. “Most males are shocked at f rst to see a chick, but once they realise I’m good at what I do they respect that.” O’Farrell tells MWP there are certain aspects on jobs she can’t physically do and it’s important to remember her limits. “I never pretend to be a male,” she says. But gender never stops her from accepting opportunities, although she understands it’s a non-traditional career path. “Not everyone wants to pick up a power tool but I don’t mind it,” she says. Alongside rendering, O’Farrell is also a capable plasterer and painter. She urges young women to consider a career in construction and to not let stereotypes deter them. “If they f nd enjoyment in a hands-on trade, go for it,” she says. “Just be yourself. They [males] will respond to that.”
• The National Association of Women in Construction [NAWIC] found last year women had secured an 11.7 per cent stake in the Australian construction industry. • NAWIC says women need to make inroads into leadership positions as they are still under-represented, despite female directors of ASX200 companies almost doubling in nine years to 15.6 per cent. • Women make up less than three per cent of chief executive positions in the Australian construction industry. • In a survey conducted by NAWIC, family commitments and inf exible working arrangements are the threats to women maintaining a career in construction. • The building and construction industry relates to jobs such as carpentry, bricklaying and plumbing but also includes architects, engineers, designers and project managers.

Fundraiser aims to provide drinking water to Ugandan orphans
F
eeling thirsty? It’s a no-brainer; turn on the tap and pour yourself a pure, refreshing, tall glass of water. But for the children of the Happy Times Child Care Initiative in Uganda – a school and orphanage for disadvantaged children in the Luweero district – accessing clean drinking water is a challenge. But Sunshine Coast locals, led by Jessica Raintree and her children, 13-year-old Isaac and 11-year-old Zoe, are hoping to change that. Raintree, a mum of three, has been fundraising to build a deep water bore for the school after her mother, who works at the school in Uganda, visited earlier in the year and mentioned the only way the children can get water is to cross a highway and fetch it from a dirty pond. Raintree says it was her two oldest children who were inspired by their grandmother’s story to instigate the fundraising for this project. “The school takes in children who have been affected by the 1986 Bush War, HIV/AIDS, extreme poverty, neglect, abandonment, abuse and disability,” Raintree says. “It was started in 2006 to enable these children to gain access to basic education and it has grown from just 13 children to more than 200.” The deepwater bore will cost $10,000, a cost which she says is “out of reach” for this school without help from outside. “To date we’ve raised $6000 through things like African-themed dinner parties where I’ve prepared feasts that explore the continent, focussing on a different region each dinner including Ethiopian, South African, Egyptian and Moroccan.” With $4,000 still needed, she has teamed up with another local mum, Alicia Gutierrez and the Ewen Maddock Dam Recreation Centre to host a ‘Cinema Under the Stars’ African-themed movie night, which will provide the f nal fundraising push needed to present the school with the best Christmas present they can hope for – safe, clean drinking water just a tap away. Gutierrez, who along with husband Peter Brown manages the Ewen Maddock Dam Recreation Centre, says it is the perfect venue to host a family-friendly outdoor movie night and
Helping provide one of the basic needs of survival through clean water for these beautiful children who have suffered so much already is the least we can do they are excited to help raise funds for such a fantastic cause. “We have so much that we take for granted every day – clean water, food, a safe place to live,” Gutierrez says. “So helping provide one of the basic needs of survival through clean water for these beautiful
children who have suffered so much already is the least we can do. “The movie we are showing is the muchloved, oldie-but-a-goodie ’80s classic The Gods Must Be Crazy, which we know will be fun for the whole family.” Cinema Under the Stars will take place on Saturday, October 11, at the Ewen Maddock Dam Recreation Centre. Everyone is welcome from 2pm with the movie screening after sunset. Games and outdoor fun will take place in the afternoon and items handmade in Uganda will be raff ed. Tickets cost $10 per person or $25 per family if booked online, or $15 per person and $35 per family at the door. Light snacks and drinks will be available to buy. Ride to work puts Mitch on road to health
N
ot many of us get a second chance at life. Mitch Wilson did and he’s not about to waste it. The 48-year-old Sunshine Coast Council employee suffered a serious cardiac arrest in January and was saved by the quick thinking of two work colleagues who administered CPR, and paramedics. Nine months on, Wilson is riding the road to recovery and using pedal power to get there. His two-wheeled journey to health and wellbeing will continue on Wednesday, October 15 when he joins 50,000 Australians for National Ride2Work Day. “The heart attack I experienced earlier this year was a huge wakeup call and my future literally depended on making changes to my lifestyle and diet,” he says. “Regular exercise was one of the most important things I had to commit to and I found bike riding an enjoyable way
to get myself moving. “I’m really looking forward to Ride2Work Day because along with being great for our environment, it’s also a great reminder that our own health is so important too. “So if you’ve been a bit slack lately when it comes to exercise, do yourself a favour and ride to work with us on October 15. It could be the best decision you ever make.” The council will host a local community event in conjunction with National Ride2Work Day on October 15. Three guided group rides will depart Sunshine Coast Stadium for prominent Maroochydore and Caloundra CBD locations. Free all-day parking will be available for registered participants at Sunshine Coast Stadium and a healthy celebratory breakfast will be provided at various locations at the end of the ride. For more information about the Ride2Work Day event visit sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
Sunshine Coast in top ten list for visitors A national consumer poll has placed the Sunshine Coast in Australia’s top 10 destinations to experience for 2014. The poll, which is an initiative of Experience Oz, is in its second year. The Sunshine Coast was seventh on the list this year, climbing one place from last year. Experience Oz marketing manager Matt Hobbs says many Australians have already experienced iconic destinations and capital cities and are looking towards more regional, escapist destinations to experience this year. Rottnest Island in Western Australia topped the list, followed by the Whitsundays, Margaret River and the Gold Coast. “This year’s list would make a great bucket list of places to experience in Australia,” Hobbs says.

Discover the real purpose of your life A senior Tibetan lama is bringing his worldwide empowerment tour to the Sunshine Coast to teach the community about life fulf llment. Dzogchen Rinpoche’s public talks entitled What is the Real Purpose of your Life? and How to Truly Follow Your Heart will be held on October 17 and 18 at the Millwell Road Community Centre in Maroochydore. The lama says people who search for meaning in their lives continually look in the wrong place and happiness escapes them. “Searching for happiness we buy in to the idea of a perfect life – a good job, a nice house, the fairytale romance,” he says. “Over many years we work hard to build this lifestyle but in reality the stress of maintaining it can leave us feeling exhausted and dissatisf ed, confused that this has not brought the long-term contentment we had hoped for. “Instead we can draw on ancient Buddhist wisdom to practice a profound yet simple method which

common sense and courtesy when traversing these tracks. But our slow journey is soon rewarded with many spectacular sights. It’s impossible to explore all the island’s treasures in a few days. Lake McKenzie is an obvious drawcard, with its white sand and bright blue water, but it gets busy. Wanggoolba Creek is another highlight. This stunning crystal clear water f ows over white sand and is lined with tropical ferns and palms. It’s a little oasis in the middle of the island. Spotting a dingo brings a burst of excitement tempered with a dose of wariness. Dingoes are an iconic part of the Fraser Island experience but need to be treated with caution. If you get time, the massive sandblows are worth a look. There are a few of them and their sheer size is awesome. They are naturally occurring and ever-evolving and slowly encroaching on the environments surrounding them. Heading back to the beach, there is plenty

he beach stretches ahead as far as the eye can see – a wide expanse of yellow sand, framed by turquoise waters and whitecapped waves on one side, and shrub-covered sand dunes on the other. We are lucky – for the minute we have this unusual ‘highway’ to ourselves, but it won’t last long. The sun is creeping higher, the tide is going out and a steady stream of four-wheel-drives will soon be travelling up and down its length. But for the moment we savour the pristine environment, the glorious sunny morning and the feeling we are the only ones here. The beach is just one of the jewels found in
Fraser Island’s treasure trove. And it is a popular one. Anglers can be seen at regular intervals casting a line in, hoping to reel in the big one. Children play in the shallows and people of all ages can be seen running burley bags over the hard, wet sand in the hope of catching a few worms. But turn off the beach and into the dunes and another world awaits. The sand pales from golden yellow to grey and then to white. And the vegetation changes with it. Tall rainforest trees and ferns line the track one minute and around a bend it changes to coarse, prickly shrubs and then to big gum trees. It’s slow going in the soft sand and you need

more to see. About 10 kilometres north of Happy Valley, the Maheno wreck is slowly rusting away, beaten by wind and sand and salt. It was run aground during a cyclone in 1935 and its deteriorating hull is a popular tourist attraction. It can get pretty busy in the mornings when the tour operators seem to stop there. Eli Creek is another favourite. Located just south of the Maheno, this freshwater creek is like a tropical hideaway and a great spot for day trips or a refreshing dip in fresh water. Take your pool noodles and f oat leisurely down the creek. It’s a great spot to relax and popular with families. Further north, Red Canyon shows off the coloured sands Fraser Island is famous for. And if you have the time, Waddy Point is worth the trip. Take a picnic, some chairs and some shade and spend a few hours swimming, f shing, relaxing or exploring the nearby Binngih Sandblow. This remarkable island – the biggest sand island in the world – supports an amazing abundance of vegetation and wildlife and a variety of ecosystems in its 123-kilometre length.
Don’t feed the dingoes!
Fishing is superb on Fraser Island
It is a treasure trove at our back door and there is plenty to explore. You will want to keep going back for more. For more information, to plan your trip or organise permits head to nprsr.qld.gov.au/ parks/fraser.
If you go: • You need a 4WD to get about on Fraser Island. • Barges leave from Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach or River Heads near Maryborough. • The Inskip barge puts you off at Hook Point at the southern end of the island (no bookings required). • The River Heads barge takes you to Kingf sher Bay or Wanggoolba Creek on the western side of the island (bookings required). • You need a vehicle access permit. • Be aware of tide times if you are driving up the beach as some areas are not accessible at high tide. • Campers will need camping permits. • Beware of dingoes. Don’t feed them, don’t leave food out or in tents, dispose of rubbish and watch children closely.
Fast Facts Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world. It is a World Heritage Area situated about 15 kilometres off the coast of Hervey Bay and Maryborough. The island is 123 kilometres long and covers more than 166,000 hectares. Lake Boomanjin is the largest perched lake in the world. Lake Wabby, the deepest lake on the island and a sacred men’s area for the Butchulla people, is slowly being taken over by the Hammerstone Sandblow, which is encroaching by about one metre each year.

he Sunshine Coast Business Awards has announced 115 finalists and two Hall of Fame inductees for its 20th anniversary celebrations. The f nalists will undergo a three-tier judging process over the next three weeks that will include interviews, a mystery shop and reference checks. Spanning more than 14 categories and 35 locations across the region, a diverse range of businesses made the cut. SCBA chair Ross Hepworth says the updated entry process, designed to coincide with the awards’ 20th anniversary, resulted in high-quality entries. “The Sunshine Coast is well known as a great holiday destination but it’s also a great place to do business,” he says. “The standard of entries this year has been incredible, with a wide range of world-class operators right here on our doorstep. “Many of our f nalists also export

] Maroochy block party Building on the success of the monthly Nights on Ocean markets, the Maroochydore Revitalisation Association (MRA) is hosting a fundraising event to gain support for its economic development plan. The event, titled ‘A Night at the Old Courthouse’, will be held on Friday October 17 and will feature music, art and a local party atmosphere. MRA president James Birrell says those attending will be asked to donate towards fundraising, but the event will also be a great opportunity to enjoy the food stalls, the Captain & the Duke pop-up bar, and the old jail cells that will be transformed into a cocktail lounge for the evening. “There are plenty of prizes available that have been donated by local businesses, and those who RSVP via our website will go into the draw to win two nights’ accommodation at any Oaks Hotels & Resorts in Australia,” says Birrell. MRA is a not-for-prof t organisation that is driven by a volunteer committee drawn from local businesses and the community. Visit www.mra.org.au for more information.
A day in the life of the Aussie dollar
Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim
I
thought it important to revisit an article I wrote in July this year where we put forward our view that the Australian dollar would purchase approximately 89 US cents by year end. In that article I wrote: “We believe the Australian dollar will soften over the remainder of 2014 due to weaker commodity prices, moderate Chinese growth and narrower interest rate differentials. Our year-end target is $US0.89 from a current level of $US0.94. “The transition back to trend growth in the Australian economy is proceeding slowly, and downside risks to growth exist via a larger than expected decline in mining capital
investment and more intense f scal drag as the Federal Government delivers on its commitment to tighten f scal policy”. This call of $US0.89 looks okay, but I thought it important to expand the discussion. First, the American dollar could continue to strengthen against the Australian dollar as the Federal Reserve completes the bond-buying program this month. Additionally, the American recovery looks to be gathering strength with American unemployment about equal with Australia in percentage terms, and their underemployment lower. This improving data is lending support to a view that the US Federal Reserve will be lifting interest rates earlier than f rst expected. The anticipated increase in the US Federal Funds rate is leading American investors to repatriate money, leading to selling of Australian shares and the Australian dollar. Interestingly, it is the American

dollar’s strength that is prevailing and not the Australian dollar’s weakness – at this time. This view can be tested when we compare the Australian dollar with other currencies. For example, the Australian dollar has shown strength against the yen, euro and, to a lesser extent, the pound. To test this view, we charted the performance of the Australian dollar, the yen, the euro and the American dollar since November 2012. The outcomes we recorded were as follows: the Australian dollar has increased by about 24 per cent against the yen, 17 per cent against the euro and is f at against the American dollar. So, although it may cost you more to travel within America and Hawaii, skiing in Japan looks achievable and it’s not too late to hit Oktoberfest in Germany – if that’s your thing. Li Cunxin set to inspire Best known as Mao’s Last Dancer, Li Cunxin has found a place in the hearts of Australians. His inspiring tale of dancing his way out of poverty in Mao’s communist China when he was selected at the age of 11 to train in Madame Mao’s Beijing Dance Academy and his subsequent defection to America where he became one of the world’s best dancers has grabbed imaginations and inspired a generation. Cunxin moved to Australia with his family in 1995 where he was the principal dancer with the Australian Ballet for more than three years and in 2012 he took the position of artistic director of the Queensland Ballet. This month he will be the guest speaker at a special event for the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network. SCBWN president Vickie Magic says it is exciting to have a speaker of this calibre on the Coast and he is attracting a wide audience. “Men and women are coming to
that one and even children – they can bring the whole family, which is kind of cool,” Magic says. “I’m expecting it to be quite inspiring.” Young ballerinas from the Sunshine Coast Conservatory of Dance will be dancing at the event. Li Cunxin will be talking on October 21 at Coastline BMW, Currimundi from 6.15pm. To book tickets visit scbwn.org.au.

Australia’s waters are full of plastic, and we put it there
T
he world’s largest collection of marine debris information has identified Australia’s coastal rubbish is mainly plastic from Australian sources. In a recently released report, CSIRO scientist Denise Hardesty says her team surveyed sites approximately every 100 kilometres along the Australian coastline. “We found about three-quarters of the rubbish along the coast is plastic,” she says. “Most is from Australian sources, not the high seas, with debris concentrated near cities.” She says the density of plastic in Australian waters ranges from a few thousand pieces of plastic per square kilometre to more than 40,000 pieces. Marine debris includes items such as glass or plastic bottles, cans, bags, balloons, rubber, metal, f breglass, cigarettes and other manufactured materials that end up in the ocean and along the coast. It can smother coral reefs, kill wildlife, and may pose a threat to human health. “Approximately one third of marine turtles around the world have likely ingested debris, and this has increased since plastic production began in the 1950s,” Dr Hardesty says. “We also estimate that between 5000 and 15,000 turtles have been
killed in the Gulf of Carpentaria after becoming ensnared by derelict f shing nets mostly originating from overseas.” She says the Tasman Sea south of Australia is a global hotspot for seabird impacts. “We found that 43 per cent of seabirds have plastic in their gut. Globally, nearly half of all seabird species are likely to ingest debris, eating everything from balloons to glow sticks, industrial plastic pellets, rubber, foam and string.” “By garnering the information needed to identify sources and hotspots of debris, we can better develop effective solutions to tackle marine debris,” says Dr Hardesty. The research is part of TeachWild, a national three-year research and education program developed by Earthwatch Australia in partnership with CSIRO and Shell Australia’s National Social Investment Program. “This innovative national partnership has engaged with thousands of students and teachers, says David McInnes, Chief Executive Off cer at Earthwatch. “It reaches more than one million Australians to help increase our understanding of the problems of marine debris.” AAP
Hook, line and sinker According to the CSIRO, marine debris is def ned as any persistent solid material that is manufactured or processed and directly or indirectly, intentionally or unintentionally, disposed of or abandoned into the marine environment. Marine debris includes consumer items such as glass or plastic bottles, cans, bags, balloons, rubber, metal, f breglass, cigarettes, and other manufactured materials that end up in the ocean and along the coast. It also includes f shing gear such as line, ropes, hooks, buoys and other materials lost on or near land, or intentionally or unintentionally discarded at sea. CSIRO has developed an online national marine debris database where you can contribute data you collect about litter at your local beach. Together, we can contribute to the improved understanding of the types, amounts and sources of debris that arrives on Australia’s coastline. To f nd out more, visit cmar.csiro.au/marine-debris.

Caring for your china • You’re usually right to pop most china pieces in the dishwasher – just don’t overfill as you don’t want them bumping into each other. It’s best to wash older china, or pieces that are heavily decorated, by hand. • If your china is sporting unsightly tea of coffee stains, try using a solution of bicarb mixed with water to have them sparkling clean. • With delicate pieces don’t over-stack when storing. Avoid hanging cups and mugs by their handles and never transfer china straight from the fridge to a hot oven or vice versa.

Renovating or redecorating? Ditch the old tea towels and invest in some bright new ones to match your space. We like these hand-printed Freckle tea towels, $22, by Yardage Design (www.yardagedesign.com.au), but your local homewares and kitchen shops will also have heaps of styles.
This simple range from designer Marc Newson for Noritake includes plates, bowls and platters, cups, saucers, mugs and teapots. They are beautifully simple plus chip-resistance dishwasher and microwave safe. Head to www.noritake.com.au for stockists and prices.

PLANS LOOK BRIGHT FOR THE SUNSHINE COAST’S NEXT GENERATION
Community Information Sessions Coolum Community Centre, Park Street. 18th Oct, 10am – 2pm & 24th Oct, 4pm – 8pm.
Planning has commenced on a new development at Yaroomba with the potential to deliver major economic and social benefits to the Sunshine Coast region, including new jobs, community facilities and a major boost to local tourism. Located on a 20-hectare site along the David Low Way and designed by renowned sustainability developer Sekisui House, the development could represent one of the largest private infrastructure investments on the Sunshine Coast. While a proposal has yet to be finalised and an application not expected to be lodged until the end of 2015, the development could feature a five star hotel, boutique retail and public precinct as well as residential, including apartments and aged care options. The developer will continue to work closely with Council and the community to determine the best approach for the site.
FACT CHECK
The dunes are not part of the site, so they can’t be built on.
FACT
Sand and parabolic dunes will be built on and destroyed.
Buildings will be set back 188m from beach. They will have minimal visible impact due to the sand dunes. Modelling indicates no shadowing on beach.
High-rise buildings will ruin the view for beachgoers and cause shadows on the beach.
Current plan has only 1,470 apartments, 250-bed hotel and 3,000m2 of retail.
High-density project with 2,300 apartments, 300 villas, 450-bed hotel and 35,000m2 of retail.
Sekisui House is not expected to lodge DA until the end of 2015.
Development Application (DA) has already been lodged.
Increased building heights for some of the site would provide 85% open green space for wider community to enjoy.
Low -rise development increasing site coverage to 40% is the best outcome for the site.
FICTION
ARTIST’S IMPRESSION
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS: • Sekisui House is committed to delivering an environmentally considerate development. • Initial flora and fauna studies indicate no significant species identified on the site. • No development on the sand and parabolic dunes – they are not a part of the site. • All proposed buildings are set back 188m from the water’s edge. • Existing vegetation buffer along David Low Way to remain. • World-class sustainability system to reduce waste, CO2 emissions and demand on infrastructure.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS:
Social & Lifestyle
• 85% of site preserved as open green space. • Community facilities may include parks, picnic and BBQ areas. Economic RPS Social and Economic Evaluation reports economic benefits to include: • $1 billion worth of construction • $25 million per annum direct contribution to Gross Regional Product • $73 million per annum tourist expenditure • $23.5 million per annum resident expenditure. Jobs • Jobs growth – estimated 4,500 jobs during construction and over 620 permanent jobs created if project goes ahead. • Indirect creation of a further 1,500 jobs with local suppliers and businesses.
To view the current concepts, take a virtual flythrough or have your say, visit www.yaroombanextgen.com.au, email info@yaroombanextgen.com.au or call the dedicated Community Liaison Line on (07) 3210 7785.
Information and images are indicative only. Proposed development is at the concept stage only and concept and designs not finalised. Final product will depend on design and development approval decisions yet to be made. Here’s a fun fact straight up: if you say the word ‘gullible’ slowly it sounds like oranges. Go on, hava go. Keep going. You’re still doing it right? Okay, serious fact: every family has one weird rello. If you can’t think of someone then chances are it’s you. Fun and games aside friends, this week has been tougher than the skin on Warnie’s new forehead! I’ve had to justify my penchant for over-indulging in my beloved amber f uid on more than one occasion. My wife reckons I might have a drinking problem – two hands, one mouth now that’s a drinking problem. Truth is, I don’t really drink beer that often. Sure I drink when I’m happy, I drink if I’m sad. I’ll hava beer when I’m alone. And when I’ve

got company. I’ll hava couple when I’m not hungry and a few when I am. I will def nitely drink a beer when it’s raining but mostly when it’s not. I might have one or two during the day, perhaps a few at night. But apart from all those times, I don’t really drink. Unless of course I’m thirsty, then I’ll have one or two. I know right – no problem. Onto more pressing business. This week’s amber treat is a real surprise and one I reckon you’ll love. About 12 months ago I rubbished the world-famous Asahi Super Dry. To this day I still swerve that beverage like Clive Palmer swerves salad. Imagine my surprise when I’ve downed the new Asahi Dry Black and reached for another straight up! I don’t mind a dark ale, and this one

• Make sure all your equipment is clean and dry. Any trace of fat will stop your egg whites from whipping up properly. • Make sure your egg whites are at room temperature. Egg whites will not whip up as light and fluffy if they are cold. • Incorporate the sugar completely, adding it slowly and consistently and beating your egg whites until they are stiff and glossy. Rub some of the mixture between your fingers – if you can feel the sugar grains continue beating until the mixture is completely smooth. A grainy mixture will cause the pavlova to weep. • Add a teaspoon of cornflour and a teaspoon of vinegar to your mix. This helps maintain a soft marshmallow texture to the centre. • Turn your oven off and leave your pavlova to cool completely in the oven, removing the meringue and cooling too quickly causes it to crack.

The latest Prado has grown to proportions not far short of its much-vaunted big brother. Yet it is more ref ned, more capable and better equipped than ever before. We drove it in its ultimate form – the top-ofthe-range Kakadu model with just about every imaginable option. Certainly it sets standards of luxury and ref nement we’re not used to seeing on anything less than Toyota’s f agship LandCruiser Sahara – a vehicle costing north of $120,000. The Kakadu still costs a cool $91,590 plus on-roads, so it’s not cheap, but it certainly packs in the kit. There’s electronic driver aids from vehicle stability control to trailer sway control, a sophisticated Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, blind spot monitors and adaptable air suspension, a pre-crash safety system and radar-guided cruise control. Interior appointments include supple leather trim, a touch-screen navigation system with reversing camera; electrically-folding third-row seats, three-zone climate control air, a gigantic moonroof and premium audio – with a Blu-Ray player and dual screens for those in the rear. It will, of course, go anywhere thanks to its dual-range all-wheel-drive system; f ve-mode CRAWL control off-road system and multi-terrain traction control. And it has that very attractive ability to swallow up seven people – all of them in relative comfort – when the need arises. The Kakadu’s cockpit screams plushness and luxury, but lacks some of the design f air and cohesion which so impressed us in its sibling Kluger. The central touch-screen allows easy access to a range of cockpit functions, including satellite navigation and Bluetooth audio streaming. It’s not the most intuitive system we’ve seen and pales next to the likes of its Lexus RX cousin on that score.
Aussie icon with a touch of luxury WORDS Peter Atkinson
M
y brother-in-law is on his fourth Toyota Prado. He loves ’em. He’s looked at other cars, but has kept coming back to the Prado for the best part of 15 years. Nothing unusual about that, you might say. Lots of people stick with the same brand, year after year. True. But this is different. For a start, he’s still got the original ones – he gives them to his kids to drive. And here’s the other thing: for most of the time he’s been buying Prados, his day job has been selling cars – but not Toyotas. The brand of cars he was paid to sell didn’t offer
a model to compare with the Prado. Very few do. The LandCruiser Prado is one of Toyota’s most enduring and successful models. Not quite as big as a LandCruiser but just about as capable and nearly as popular. With its impressive off-road ability and f exible seating arrangements, including the option of seven seats, the Prado has become a favourite for families who enjoy weekends away but don’t want to rough it during the week. But because of its smaller-than-LandCruiser size, it also works for those living in the city.

<from page 43
But the Prado is, after all, made of sterner stuff and it’s this machine’s ability to blend luxury on-road performance with an intimidating off-road ability that underpins its market strength. The four-litre V6 in our test
machine was creamy smooth, delivered ample low-down torque and acceptably punchy acceleration for such a big thing, all through the seamless delivery of the f ve-speed auto. The air suspension, too, adds a pillowy ride. It’s not the most frugal beast.
Around town consumption will slip well into the teens, while we averaged about 12 litres per 100 kilometres on a weekend round trip of more than 300 kilometres. My Prado-loving brother-in-law related one horror story when his average was in the high 20s from towing his caravan. That will empty the fuel tank in alarming fashion. Still, the V6 seems to be a decidedly better choice than the Prado’s four-cylinder turbo-diesel which, when we tested the same powerplant in a HiLux recently, left us fairly nonplussed. The f ve-speed auto is probably a rung or two behind the category leaders these days, but it gets the job done smoothly and decisively. The sophisticated dual-range transmission allows the driver to select between two electronically lockable differentials as well as variable modes from rock-hopping to ploughing through deep mud and sand. Adding to the Kakadu’s versatility is the air suspension system’s ability to increase ground clearance for off-road driving but
deliver f atter, more stable handling at highway speeds. It even allows you to lower the vehicle to enable easier access – a fact that pleased my 80-something mother when she rode in the Prado’s back seat. Those seats, incidentally, are trimmed in supple leather that belies the Prado’s serious off-road ability. In normal city or highway driving, the Prado is impressively quiet and smooth – even more so when comfort mode is selected. The seats are heated in the front, while rear-seat passengers get their own air-conditioning controls and there’s dedicated ventilation slots for the third-row occupants. As impressive as the Prado is, it faces some increasingly stiff competition in this segment of the market, where Nissan has made an impressive entry with its recently relaunched Pathf nder, while VW’s Touareg and even BMW’s X5 and Benz’s ML now compete on price with the top-end Toyota. Still, it’s fair to expect the Prado lovers to keep on keeping the faith. It’s almost a family tradition.

Program aims to reduce road toll

(into the program) is possibly saving a young person from trauma or road accident.” This core road safety education initiative, the RYDA program, has more than 50,000 students attending annually in Australia and New Zealand and Woodforth says all schools in his catchment area are taking part. But he hopes the program will continue to expand. The one-day program is a pre-driver course and Woodforth says it is information that will stay with them for life. Research shows that once young people start driving, it is generally too late for attitude and awareness training as they have already developed a strong and often incorrect belief in their own competencies. “Good driving habits start long before they take the wheel,” says Dr Bridie Scott-Parker, Research Fellow at University of the Sunshine Coast Accident Research, who will attend
the RYDA program on October 15. RYDA aims to ensure that when young people begin driving, they have already received the best road safety education available. It also aims to inf uence the attitudes and behaviours of both drivers and passengers before they get their licence. Woodforth says the program covers demonstrations of a vehicle’s stopping distance at different speeds, driving instructions from the police and information on hazard perception, fatigue, drugs, alcohol and distractions such as loud music and
mobile phones in the vehicle. Students will also have the opportunity to hear from a road accident survivor with severe life-changing injuries and to see a video about a young girl who lost her life in a car accident and the ripple effect that had on her family, friends and the community. “We do not use fear tactics, it’s very subtle,” he says. Woodforth would like to see it become government-funded and made compulsory in all Queensland schools.

oung people from the Sunshine Coast will become safer on the roads by participating in the popular and ground breaking RYDA (Rotary Young Driver Awareness) program. About 1200 year 11 students from 10 local high schools and colleges have enrolled in the 2014 program. Rotary has received a one-off Queensland Government Department of Transport and Main Roads Community Road Safety Education Grant to deliver eight free RYDA programs for 1300 students in 2014-2015. Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacif c publicity off cer Neville Woodforth says the f rst two programs covered by the grant will take place next week with another six to be delivered in 2015. “We hope that we are going to make a huge difference to the road toll – by decreasing it obviously,” Woodforth says. “Every extra student we get

Smooth move Moving house is a major hassle, so here are our survival tips.
Y
ou’ve negotiated a fair price for your home and managed – with a bit of negotiation – to secure your new dream home. You’ve got the finance sorted out, all the paperwork is safely at the solicitor’s, and you’re about to pick up the keys to your new home. Phew, the hard work is over, right? Actually, it is just the beginning, because now you have to move.
It’s up there with death and divorce as one of life’s great stresses, so how can you make moving house a little easier? MPP has a few ideas. • Before you get into the serious packing, it’s a good idea to prepare a suitcase for each member of the family. Transport these in the family car rather than the removal van. Include a change of underwear and some pyjamas, toothbrush, toothpaste, medication and other personal items you need to make life comfortable. That way when you get to your new home you’re not frantically searching for your spare contact lenses in the 75 boxes that are sitting in your living area. • Hire a professional to clean your current home. Many people f nd packing up to be the easy part. It’s early in the process and the de-cluttering is a cathartic exercise. But once the removalists have left you want to turn your focus to your new home. Cleaning is exhausting, and you’ll be over it way before the job is done. Save your energy for your new home. • Even if you’ve de-cluttered ruthlessly from your
Before you get into the serious packing, prepare a suitcase for each member of the family. Transport these in the family car rather than the removal van old place, once you get into your new home and start unpacking you’ll be amazed how much stuff is spilling out of those boxes. It’s tempting to stuff some of them in the spare room, close the door and resolve to deal with them in a few months. Sure, take it easy, relax and take time to f nd the perfect spot for your holiday trinkets and family photos. But it’s a bad idea to leave boxes unpacked for months after the move. If you’ve discovered something has broken in transit there is not much you can do about it three years later.
• Unpack the essentials such as clothes and set up the kitchen f rst. It doesn’t matter if the rest of the house is in chaos as long as the toaster and fridge are working. • Take time to explore your new neighbourhood – the cafe down the road, the park at the end of the street. This is because it’s important to remind yourself why you wanted to move to your new location in the f rst place. • Be patient with yourself and others. It will all be over before you know it.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Expect pleasure and pain in relationships this week, rams, as the sun and Venus boost your social life, and then retrograde Mercury causes some mischief and confuses communication. Problems will crop up if you jump to hasty conclusions so try to think things through.
TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] It will be tempting to overindulge in sweet treats and fine wine this week as Venus and Jupiter switch your hedonistic streak into top gear. Meanwhile, retrograde Mercury throws all semblance of order, discipline and a healthy diet out the window!
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] This week’s stars suit reading, public speaking, social networking and having fun. But, with Mercury still retrograde expect a few hiccups along the way! On Friday and Saturday, the stars magnify your ability to persuade others with a convincing argument.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Mercury is reversing through your home zone so domestic dynamics are frustrating at the moment. Time for clever crabs to communicate clearly and consult often. Plus a problem with a vulnerable family member may have to be revisited.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Communication will be a delight and a conundrum this week, as the sun and Venus increase your cat charisma … and then Mercury trips you up at every turn. Learn to self-edit what comes out of your mouth, otherwise you are likely to upset someone important.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] With Venus and retrograde Mercury in your finance zone, money matters are oscillating between wonderful and woeful. So stash extra cash away to tide you over when times are tight. On Friday and Saturday you’re drawn to convivial company, fine food and delicious dining.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Don’t sit on the side-lines and be a Libran wallflower. With vivacious Venus visiting your sign, you’re in the mood to mix and mingle. Mercury is reversing through your sign, so your diplomatic skills will be tested as loved ones get involved in misunderstandings.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Still waters run deep! With so much planetary action in your mystery zone this week, there’s more to everything than meets the eye. And it will take your Scorpio discretion – and substantial detective talents – to uncover secrets and distinguish fact from fantasy.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Mars is rushing through your sign, so you’re in garrulous, gung-ho mode. Strive to get the balance right between being proactive, and taking thoughtful action. Spontaneity works sometimes – at other times, Sagittarians learn to adopt a more measured approach.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Do you enjoy your job and does it stimulate your mind? This week, take the time to re-evaluate your professional position, as Venus and retrograde Mercury pair up in your career zone. Utilise the power of your mind to work smarter, rather than harder.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] With plenty of planetary action in your aspiration zones Aquarius, it’s time to dream big dreams, create your preferred future, and follow your destiny. And don’t be dismayed by temporary setbacks and stressful delays.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Jupiter helps you power through work projects with extra energy. Then you’ll have more hours in each day for rest and recreation, as you enjoy good times with family and friends. The more you support and encourage colleagues, the better your work environment.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
What a long weekend just past peeps. Small waves, whales, a music festival, Bunnies’ win and nothing but sunshine! I can tell you that the northern tip on Bribie has some nice little banks so if you make the journey in the right conditions you may be rewarded. This weekend looks very ordinary so I have no tips except be good to your mother. It will be lovely conditions so maybe check A Bay if you could be bothered. Was a bummer to see Kelly Slater not get past Medina in the title race last week. He was soooo close. Not sure how Medina is not going to win this year unless he has a shocker in Portugal and Pipeline, but he is surfing way too good for that. But hey, stranger things have happened!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Whiting are taking yabbies on the drift around Bli Bli with mud crabs at the mouth of feeder creeks. Find flathead and jew in the Cod Hole on live baits or sinking lures that rattle. Bream will be on the top of the tide under the high rises in the Maroochy using fowl gut and prawns. SURF: Sand whiting and small dart are along Maroochy Beach using cured worms (they stay on better) with low tide best. Tailor are surprising anglers at Pincushion and Point Cartwright with quality and quantity using pillies and slugs. OFFSHORE: Spotted and spanish mackeral are taking weighted pillies and red head lures just off Point Cartwright and 12 Mile with mack tuna nabbing small lures trolled just past the breakers. Murphy’s Reef and Coolum are returning mixed reef fish with dawn and dusk best, using cut baits. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam is returning bass on deep divers and saratoga on surface poppers or flies. Silver perch and jew preferring earthworms when worked just along the weed line. Head to Lake Baroon for bass and spangled perch on live shrimps check with rangers about the blue green algae problem of late.
After you have made the move to Caloundra Rise you’ll wish you had done it earlier as the peace of mind it gives you frees you up to go and do all the things you have been waiting to do. Just a short distance to magnif cent beaches and picturesque hinterland. A community style living with regular events, classes and get togethers.
