s a parent you experience many emotions; joy, pride…and guilt. Guilt is the one that stays with me the most; guilt about letting my boys get away with too much or too little, guilt about being too soft or too tough with discipline, guilt about enjoying the one hour a year when I have some free time for myself. Near the top of that list is my torment about technology. It started with the question: do we go with the baby Einstein CDs or just stick with books? (We bought the CDs and bought and borrowed many books.) It has since escalated to how much television to let them watch? And how long should they be on the iPad? Different doctors will tell you different things. One expert will say too much technology will damage a child’s health. Another will say depriving your child of technology will see them fall behind their classmates. So this week My Weekly Preview looks at children and technology, and one of the results may surprise – it’s more about us than them. I look forward talking with you again next week.

KIDS LOVE SCREENS, BUT WHAT IMPACT IS TOO MUCH TIME ON DIGITAL MEDIA HAVING ON DEVELOPING YOUNG BRAINS? WORDS: RICHARD O’LEARY

I

return from walking the dog and all the doors are locked. I figure my wife is having a shower and I call for my two boys. No answer. I try yelling through the kitchen. No answer. But I can hear them laughing upstairs. I walk to the front of the house and yell up to the master bedroom. My eldest boy answers how only a six year-old can. “What?” “Can you open the door please?” “What?” “Can you open the door?” “What?” “Can you come out to the balcony?” He runs out. “What?” Can you open the kitchen door for me? “I’ll miss Roadrunner.” I tell him to pause the iPad. He runs inside, pauses the YouTube clip, runs downstairs to let me in, and without a hello, sprints back upstairs. Now I know what Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was on about. You see, the electronics guru didn’t allow his children to use iPads. Which begs the question: if he didn’t let his kids use them, why do we? And should we? Being worried about how our children spend their time is nothing new; 30 years ago parents used to scare their kids by telling them they’d get square eyes if they watched too much television, and before that, children were told they’d hurt their eyes if they read too much. The research into the effects of children using tablets and other mobile devices is still in its early stages, but the initial results have medical experts worried, especially when they are coupled with overall screen use, including watching television and using computers. Associate Professor in Human Development and Learning at the University of the Sunshine Coast Michael Nagel, spent 12 months touring Australia as part of Generation Next – a series of mental health seminars for young people – talking about the impact of technology on the brain.

[ 6 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ O CTO B E R 31, 20 1 4

6.indd 1

Nagel is in favour of children adopting technology, but says there can be serious consequences when young people spend too much time on screens. “So developmentally we know kids are spending far more time in front of screens than any other generation and we know that’s impacting on all manners of health. In terms of neuro development, what you consume is maybe what you get out.” Among the things children can risk if they gorge on technology are impaired brain development, eye strain, impulsive behaviour, greater inattentiveness and obesity. There are also suggestions young brains are being re-wired in ways we simply do not understand, which makes it diff cult to say whether the changes are helpful or harmful. That’s one of the reasons Melbourne’s

Yvette Adams

Swinburne University’s BabyLab has begun a comprehensive study of the effects on children aged between two and f ve who use technology. Dr Jordy Kaufman, Director of the f rst infant cognitive neuroscience laboratory, says using tablets and mobile devices has been unfairly lumped with watching television. He says the study will investigate the possible positive benef ts of children becoming early adopters of tablets and mobile devices. “Probably the biggest advantage is that the tech can sometimes afford a wider range of activities and easier accessibility to this range of activities. If it’s easier to have a whole library at your f ngertips, that may increase the variety of things you read to your children. It’s the same for educational games.” The f ndings are expected to be released in the coming months. For older children, years of research has already

It’s a pretty crazy phenomenon – this is the first time in history that kids literally know more about something than us. And that’s a bit dangerous. You can’t parent if they know more than you about something. So you better learn about it… M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

been done, especially in relation to violent games. Nagel says more than 2000 studies have found a link between media violence and aggressive attitudes and behaviours, and even criminal behaviour as adults. Addiction to the internet has become so prevalent it has now become part of the diagnostic manual for mental health disorders. The f ndings of many of these studies are debated, in particular the causal relationships – the old chicken and egg theory about what came f rst; did bad behaviour follow abuse of technology or are people with behavioural problems attracted by violent video games? The quick pace of change with technology also makes it diff cult for researchers to keep up. The one thing most experts agree on is that an individual’s media patterns are formed at an early age – and the earlier you develop good habits the better. The best way to encourage those? Nagel says lead by example. “You have to model the sort of behaviour you expect. If you are telling your children they have to turn off their technology, then you have to turn off your technology. If the f rst thing they see in the morning is mum and dad checking the email, that becomes a thing for them as well. If they see mum and dad looking at their phones while watching television, then that’s a habit they pick up.” Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines recommends children younger than two years of age should not spend any time with electronic media. That increases to one hour for two to f ve year-olds and two hours for f ve to 17 year-olds (it’s recommended adults have no longer than two hours of screen time a day as well). The guidelines in the United States are similar, but American pediatric bodies are so concerned they’re considering raising the recommended age limit for no screen time from two to f ve years. The attempt to protect young minds follows the release of f ndings which show the average American eight to 10 year-old spends nearly eight hours a day with media, while teenagers spend up to 11 hours a day online or watching television. This means for a generation of young Americans, watching screens has become the

“Many digital interactions can enhance children’s life experiences. If you take your children to the zoo and take some photos and when you return, your screen time is to make a digital book that recalls and revisits your trip, then your child is having a very high quality interaction with media that’s going to be educationally benef cial. “I love that idea of children being creators of media rather than just consumers of media, and that is a great touchstone for parents when they are looking at screen time. “We have to rethink play patterns, rather than always thinking off-screen is better, sometimes we can remember that screen can be the inspiration for off-screen. It takes away some of the angst for screen time for parents. We’ve just played with

Dr Kate Highf eld from the Institute of Early Childhood at Sydney’s Macquarie University is currently in the United States studying children’s interactive media use, and she says it’s not just about the quantity of time spent on tablets and mobile devices, but the quality as well, especially for young children. She says parents should steer clear of games that rely on basic drills and excessive in-game rewards as they require little input from the child. She says apps that encourage your child to be creative make for a much healthier digital diet.

I love that idea of children being creators of media rather than just consumers of media, and that is a great touchstone for parents when they are looking at screen time that cookie making app, why don’t we try and make real cookies.” Experts say these good habits will help children make better choices when they get older and are confronted with social media, violent video games and pornography. Sunshine Coast social media expert Yvette Adams is a strong advocate for children using technology. She argues children should be taught computer coding in school in preference to a second language. Adams is so passionate about the role parents need to play that she wrote a book continued over>

TECHNOLOGY TIPS FOR PARENTS: • Educate yourself about technology • Use the technology with your child • Look for apps that encourage children to create • Avoid apps that rely on drills and excessive in-game rewards • Limit the amount of time your child spends on electronic devices or watching TV • Don’t allow screens in bedrooms.

about it. No Kidding! puts the onus squarely on mums and dads. “I think some of them aren’t parenting. It’s a pretty crazy phenomenon – this is the f rst time in history that kids literally know more about something than us. And that’s a bit dangerous. You can’t parent if they know more than you about something. So you better learn about it so you can work out how does that actually sit with me and our family values?” One of the things Adams regularly sees is a parent who has no idea about what their child is doing with technology. “I’ve met women in the training groups I run who say my kids are not on it (Facebook) and we’ve gone: what’s their name? Is this her? She’s got three accounts.” Adams argues if you know what you are dealing with, you can make informed decisions. “I’m just trying to move the conversation from this negative – cyber safety, cyber danger, cyber bullying, it’s all bad, bad, bad so don’t let them on it – that’s just the same as saying, don’t have sex, don’t drink alcohol, they’re going to do it and then they are going to do it unsafely.” It’s a conversation society has to have. And maybe when everything is said and done, the crux of the matter is this: it’s not about limiting our children, but extending ourselves.

Currimundi radiologist at the forefront of medical imaging Dr Sean O’Connor and his wife Marcia Beaumont at the centre, which will be renamed the Laszlo Tabar Breast Centre

I

t’s hard to keep up when Dr Sean O’Connor starts talking about his job. It’s even harder to get a word in edgeways. There is no doubt the Coast radiologist loves his work, but he is the f rst to tell you radiology wasn’t why he became a doctor – he was going to be an emergency physician. Then he changed to pediatrics and loved it – but not the hours and night shift. “I suppose that the answer is that I got into it kind of for the wrong reason because I thought it would be a better job than pediatrics,” O’Connor says. “But I didn’t realise that I was going to develop this passion for it.” O’Connor is the managing director and radiologist at Coastal Medical Imaging in Currimundi, which he opened with his wife, Marcia Beaumont, in 2009. But he has set out to ensure it is no ordinary radiology clinic. “We do passionate care with direct radiologists’ clinical involvement in patient care, which is not common in the industry by any stretch of the imagination.” He says some of the services he offers are quite unique. “I am the only person in Australia who does 3D trans rectal ultrasound of the prostate,” he says. And he’s built up a solid reputation. “I have people that come from – I kid you not – two people from Los Angeles, one from San Francisco and about 160 men that f y from all over Australia to get prostate ultrasound done at our centre.” And some are very high prof le men, although he can’t share their names for obvious reasons. Beaumont says her husband is passionate about his work and has an insatiable appetite for information, constantly wanting to learn more. “He’s caring and compassionate to a fault to patients,” she says.

14.indd 1

We do passionate care with direct radiologists’ clinical involvement in patient care, which is not common in the industry by any stretch of the imagination The couple met in America, where O’Connor was a f ref ghter paramedic and Beaumont, who is Australian, started as a paramedic and became a nurse, working in a transplant clinic in San Francisco. While their Currimundi clinic is growing in men’s circles, it’s women’s imaging that O’Connor is particularly interested in, with a completely separate clinic – the Specialist Women’s Imaging Centre – at the same location, designed specif cally for women, including a separate entrance and feminine décor. “There is a massive degree of anxiety that is present in women’s imaging that just isn’t there for the vast majority of imaging,” he says. A specialist clinic was Beaumont’s idea and became particularly pertinent with her mum developing breast cancer, followed by her

own scare. But O’Connor is not content to stick with the pack. He wants to be at the forefront of radiology and he has a university aff liation with New York University and aff liations with global researchers in Germany and in Canada. He has also researched pain management in conjunction with a neurosurgeon and says pain management makes up a big part of his practice. And he takes on the tough cases. As a consequence, he says they don’t get a lot of “normal” chest X-rays and bumps. “We get, ‘this lady’s been seen by three people and nobody can f gure it out, please send her over to Sean and Sean will sort it out’.” But you get the impression he loves this kind of challenge. He found the smallest fallopian cancer ever seen – it was 2.5 centimetres where most are around eight centimetres when found and usually lethal. Kawana MP Jarrod Bleijie says O’Connor’s facilities at Currimundi ensure locals have access to world-class treatment. “This is a subject close to my heart, as my mother, Christine, was diagnosed with melanoma a few years ago,” Bleijie says. “I’ve seen f rst-hand how having the right equipment and dedicated staff can make a world of difference to both patients and their families.”

Centre renamed in Tabar’s honour One of the world’s leading breast radiologists and four times Nobel Prize nominee Professor Laszlo Tabar will be on the Coast tomorrow when the Women’s Imaging Centre at Currimundi is renamed in his honour. It will be known as the Laszlo Tabar Breast Centre and O’Connor is thrilled that someone of such prominence has given his name to the centre. Laszlo, the director of the Swedish National Breast Institute, known as the Tabar Institute, is a visionary physician, researcher and educator who has dedicated his life study to the global f ght against breast cancer. “He’s looked at over a million mammograms,” O’Connor says. “He has been in large part responsible for the dissemination of mammography throughout the world. The celebration and renaming will take place at a private function at the clinic on Saturday.

Playwright seeks letters from the battlefield I am keen to have access to these letters as a way of relating this production to people in the area

aleny playwright David Crewe is seeking authentic letters from the battlefield for his new drama ANZAC Dawn. Crewe says the letters are important documents that vividly describe the personal experience and hardship of World War I. “I am keen to have access to these [letters] as a way of relating this production to people in the

area,” he says. “They can be from soldiers or nurses or other relatives involved in the struggle.” The Sunshine Coast Agricultural Society, with support from the Queensland State ANZAC Centenary Fund and Sunshine Coast Council, has commissioned Crewe and Buderim composer Paul Coppens to create an original performance as part of the ANZAC commemorations next year. If you wish to contribute a letter send an email to thecrewes@bigpond.com.

Intelligent region – again

The Smart21 of 2015

The Sunshine Coast has been named one of the world’s most intelligent regions at the 2015 Smart21 Communities Forum in New York. It’s the second year in a row the Sunshine Coast has been recognised and Mayor Mark Jamieson says the region is competing strongly with the world’s information technology savvy communities. “The Forum, part of the internationally aff liated Intelligent Community Forum Foundation, has only named 134 communities worldwide to date over the last 16 years so we’re in exclusive company. “Each in this select group will now be vying for the ultimate prestigious designation of Intelligent Community of the Year in June 2015. The Smart21 Communities of 2015 is comprised of f ve communities from the United States, four communities from Taiwan, three communities from Canada and one each from Brazil, Kenya, Kazakhstan and new Zealand.

Less politics, more collaboration Our region needs to focus less on politics and personalities if it’s to reach its potential. That will be the message delivered by well-respected American professor Ed Morrison when he appears as the keynote speaker at this year’s Sunshine Coast Futures Conference. The Purdue University academic says working together is the key to success. “Quite simply, no single organisation has all the resources required to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. “Effective collaboration has become an imperative. In our globally connected world, our challenges and opportunities are complex and shifting. “Only through networks can we hope to mobilise the expertise and resources we need innovate in the face of these realities. In today’s world, innovation takes place through collaboration in open, loosely connected networks. Communities that fail to respond to the collaboration imperative will struggle.” Professor Morrison has helped transform a number of cities, including Oklahoma City, Milwaukee, Charleston, South Carolina and a new clean energy cluster in Florida following the NASA Shuttle shutdown. “Taking action” is the theme of this year’s Sunshine Coast Futures Conference on November 7. More than 200 academics, decision-makers, industry representatives and professionals are expected to attend the interactive forum. The aim? To help the region act on critical issues such as business, community, education and health.

Key topics of the Futures Conference: • business and investment (how to attract capital and foster innovation in an economy dominated by micro and small business) • population and community (the role of demographics and their impact on productivity) • education and training (how to create workforce readiness through education and training) • health and wellness (the realities of population wellness in the region).

Bits and Bytes >> Smartphone scare Hackers are increasingly targeting mobile phones to access private bank accounts. A report by Kaspersky Labs with Interpol has found 60 per cent of malicious programs targeting Android devices worldwide between August 2013 and July 2014 were designed to steal money or banking credentials. The report focused on Android, which accounts for roughly 85 per cent of the mobile device market and 98 per cent of mobile malware. Just like other online operators, hackers are getting into mobile because more users access the internet from these devices. Kaspersky found more than 588,000 Android users faced f nancial malware attacks, six times higher than in the previous 12 months. “It is easy to understand why cybercriminals create so many malicious programs targeting Android devices: these days, smartphones are increasingly used as a tool to pay online for merchandise and services,” the report says. The largest number of victims were Android users in Russia. Other countries affected included Ukraine, Spain, Britain, Vietnam, Malaysia, Germany, India and France. AAP

Suffering with headaches or migraines?

TABLET PLANS @ 1

You’re not alone. About 20% of the population suffer with headaches and migraine. Days off work and poor productivity not only affect our work, but also our home life. Professor Wayne Wittingham, Chiropractor, conducted several major studies on headaches. These studies showed that for the majority of headache sufferers, chiropractic helped reduce the pain, intensity and frequency of the headaches. One of the best things to come from the study was evidence that chiropractic prevented headaches in some people. If you or a family member is suffering, this may be the answer.

Sinus, hayfever, ongoing sneezing, and daily headaches, that can be worse in the morning, though seem to last more months through the year than the Spring should bring, and could have been going on for decades, all could be part of a bigger health problem that is NOT associated with your allergies! Do you also suffer with symptoms of constipation, gurgling sounds in the gut, stubborn weight, nausea, or bad breath? These are all connected to the same underlying cause, and can last a lifetime if never detected.

infection has been found to burrow deep within the villi of your gut wall, a very hard to reach place, and has been shown to release a nerve toxin, paralysing the muscles of your bowel, causing symptoms of constipation and nausea, not to mention the secondary effects I’ve seen in some patients with chronic weight gain, fatigue, and tender lymph glands in the groin and armpits. It is rarely tested for, and is often mistaken for allergic rhinitis, or lazy bowel, and so can go on for years undetected and untreated, causing irreparable damage.

One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades, and have been mistaken for allergies, resulting in the overuse of nasal sprays or antihistamines, doing little to help, and harming your sinuses. You may suffer just a few of these symptoms or perhaps all of them.

Fortunately it is quite easy to address, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. I have seen patients who have suffered with fatigue, sinus headaches and overweight for many years, watching them adhere to low fat and low carb diets, all with no results, and after treatment for just a few months have improved out of sight, losing weight and feeling well.

The cause has been found in the mucous membranes of the entire digestive canal, including the gut, right through the mucosa of the mouth and the sinuses, and it is not uncommon. It is an insidious infection mainly picked up from eating food that has been left out for long periods, or food from street vendors during travelling, though is often only detected in specialised testing. This specif c

These are not conditions with unknown cause like many believe, and can be resolved quickly when properly investigated with the right medical testing. If you would like to know more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation with one of our experienced and specially trained naturopaths.

WHAT LIES BENEATH The bones of six million Parisians lie preserved beneath one of the world’s prettiest cities. Enter at your own risk.

A

s if visiting the Paris Catacombs in the daytime isn’t creepy enough, you can now visit the underground maze of skeletons after nightfall. That’s if you dare defy the warning at the entrance: “Stop, this is the empire of Death.” It’s not the romantic side of Paris most of us associate with the city of love – strolls along the river, art galleries and museums, pastries and champagne. The subterranean tunnels, stretching two kilometres, cradle the bones of some six million Parisians from centuries past and once gave refuge to smugglers. Twenty metres beneath the French capital’s medieval streets, labyrinthine walls of bones and cranes bring visitors into the city of the dead, in a spooky atmosphere that attracts history enthusiasts as

well as visitors looking for a chilling place to celebrate Halloween. The site used to close at 5pm, but is staying open until 8pm. The change is mainly aimed at allowing more people to visit and reducing long lines, but it also adds to the thrill: entering and leaving the catacombs after dark feels different to doing it in daylight. Human remains started to be transferred to the former underground quarries of Paris in 1786, when the city’s main cemetery – the Cemetery of Innocents – was closed for public health reasons. From 1809, the catacombs were rearranged into organised galleries, with piled bones forming walls and pillars, and even some artistic shapes made of femurs and skulls. Sacred and profane maxims and poems are posted around the galleries, such as: “Think in the

morning that perhaps you won’t survive until evening, and in the evening that perhaps you won’t survive until morning.” Valerie Guillaume, director of the Catacombs, stressed the philosophical nature of the unusual tourist site. “The place was not conceived to be a horror place, but as a ref ection on the meaning of life and death,” she says. Sylvie Robin, the Catacombs’ curator, describes the extensive smuggling that went on in the tunnels in the past and contributed to its scary reputation. “That’s the origin of all the legends,” she says, because the smugglers used to scare the Parisians with some lights and noises, so that they wouldn’t come and see what they were doing.

PLANS LOOK BRIGHT FOR THE SUNSHINE COAST’S NEXT GENERATION INFORMATION STANDS

Kawana Shopping World 27th - 28th October and 1st November Stockland Caloundra Shopping Centre 29th October Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre 30th - 31st October and 1st November

Planning has commenced on a new development at Yaroomba with the potential to deliver major economic and social benefits to the Sunshine Coast region, including new jobs, community facilities and a major boost to local tourism. Located on a 20-hectare site along the David Low Way and designed by renowned sustainability developer Sekisui House, the development could represent one of the largest private infrastructure investments on the Sunshine Coast. While a proposal has yet to be finalised and an application not expected to be lodged until the end of 2015, the development could feature a five star hotel, boutique retail and public precinct as well as residential, including apartments and aged care options. The developer will continue to work closely with Council and the community to determine the best approach for the site.

FACT CHECK

The dunes are not part of the site, so they can’t be built on.

FACT

Sand and parabolic dunes will be built on and destroyed.

Buildings will be set back 188m from beach. They will have minimal visible impact due to the sand dunes. Modelling indicates no shadowing on beach.

High-rise buildings will ruin the view for beachgoers and cause shadows on the beach.

Current plan has only 1,470 apartments, 250-bed hotel and 3,000m2 of retail.

High-density project with 2,300 apartments, 300 villas, 450-bed hotel and 35,000m2 of retail.

Sekisui House is not expected to lodge DA until the end of 2015.

Development Application (DA) has already been lodged.

Increased building heights for some of the site would provide 85% open green space for wider community to enjoy.

Low -rise development increasing site coverage to 40% is the best outcome for the site.

ARTIST’S IMPRESSION

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS: • Sekisui House is committed to delivering an environmentally considerate development. • Initial flora and fauna studies indicate no significant species identified on the site. • No development on the sand and parabolic dunes – they are not a part of the site. • All proposed buildings are set back 188m from the water’s edge. • Existing vegetation buffer along David Low Way to remain. • World-class sustainability system to reduce waste, CO2 emissions and demand on infrastructure.

Smart investing for the long term

F

ollowing the latest bout of market volatility, it is worth revisiting the principles of sound investing. We seek to sensibly manage investment risk to ensure clients are adequately rewarded with higher returns for the investment risks they take. The main way to manage investment risk is via the construction of a carefully diversif ed investment portfolio. Diversif cation involves making the best allocation of your wealth among a range of investments to maximise the probability of achieving stated investment goals, while managing risk in a way that best suits the individual.

This diversif cation, commonly referred to as asset allocation, is generally accepted as the primary driver of variability in investment returns, so asset allocation decisions are paramount. Sensible diversif cation reduces risk because when one or more of your investments may unfortunately be delivering lower returns, other investments can be performing strongly to offset these lower returns. The overall result is a portfolio that provides a more stable growth prof le. One of the primary benef ts of selecting a sensible asset allocation is to ensure the risk in your investment portfolio is set at a level with which you feel comfortable – the ‘sleep at night’ factor. One of the strongest determinants of the correct asset allocation for a particular investor is the level of income and cash f ow required from the investment portfolio. Whatever your goals, it is vital to discuss them with a professional adviser and quantify them. Agree on a level of

TOP BULLS

income and the growth targets required to meet your goals, and then your adviser will be best placed to guide you on an appropriate asset allocation to meet those goals. The current market weakness is also a reminder that the length of time you wish to invest your funds for is another important input into the asset allocation process. Generally, longer-term investors are able to ride out the inevitable f uctuations in market and investment values, perhaps even taking the opportunity to make additional investments when assets can be bought at lower prices during diff cult market conditions. It is therefore important to be able to decipher what is short-term noise in the market so that you are able to stay focused on a long-term investment strategy. Global demand for COYO Local company COYO has won the Richard Joel Award for Emerging Exporter of the Year at the Premier of Queensland Export Awards. COYO is Australasia’s f rst commercially produced non-dairy yoghurt and ice-cream alternative that uses coconut milk and is suitable for those with dietary and digestive challenges. Launched on the Sunshine Coast in 2010, COYO’s domestic success has attracted international investors in America, the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand. COYO owner Henry Gosling says the award was unexpected but greatly appreciated. He also says there are opportunities for the business to expand. “We have a lot of enquiries all over the world.” Gosling says building the business has been a learning curve, but he is thankful the local community embraced COYO products. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the business is the epitome of bold thinking and real action. “Agribusiness is recognised as one

1 WHAT IS EBOLA? Ebola haemorrhagic fever is a viral illness which aggressively attacks the blood coagulation system and spreads quickly to all organs especially the liver and kidneys.

Headache, fatigue, fever, muscle pain

DAY 10

Sudden high fever, vomiting of blood

DAY 11

10 DAYS

Ten things you should know about Ebola 5

4 FIRST HUMAN OUTBREAKS Emerged in 1976 – one in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo) and Southern Sudan (now South Sudan). The virus was named after the Ebola River where the virus was first recognised. Latest outbreak occurred in December 2013 in the African nation of Guinea, but it was not detected until March 2014.

6 IS THERE A VACCINE? As yet there is no licensed vaccine for Ebola, however production and clinical trials of a number of potential vaccines has been accelerated, with health care workers in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone expected to receive the first vaccinations in early 2015.

4500+ people have died out of 9000+ reported cases in West Africa this year

9 HOW CONTAGIOUS IS IT?

8 HOW DID HUMANS GET IT?

It spreads between humans by direct contact with infected blood, bodily fluids or organs, or indirectly through contact with contaminated environments.

10 AM I IN DANGER? There have been few outbreaks outside of Africa. Advanced disease control protocols and equipment make human-to-human transmission far less likely in modern hospitals.

Ebola is extremely infectious but not extremely contagious. Ebola isn’t contagious until symptoms appear. The incubation period – the time interval from infection with the virus to onset of symptoms – is two to 21 days.

In Africa, infection has been documented through the handling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys and forest antelope. Fruit bats are considered to be the natural hosts of the virus.

HIA award night highlights innovative Coast designers Clever housing designs that seamlessly combine indoor and outdoor living were big winners in this year’s local HIA awards.

T

he Housing Industry Association’s awards events are a chance to celebrate the incredible work of the nation’s construction industry. Two weeks ago at the Ramada in Marcoola, the HIA’s local awards event was held, and again the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay industry impressed the judges. The HIA is Australia’s peak industry body for residential construction, renovation and development and the awards recognise the achievements in design, construction, innovation and housing technology. Winner of the major award on the night was Paul Clout Design, who took out the Sunshine Coast Home of the Year award for a custom-built home at Noosa Sound. The judges described the project as “impeccable” and were impressed by the design elements and detail that has created

Interior Design by Eileen Middleton Interiors Eileen Middleton’s interior design practice has received numerous Housing Industry Association (HIA) and Kitchen and Bathroom Design Institute (KBDi) awards, and her professional approach to interior design has persisted for many years. Recent notable achievements from Eileen Middleton Interiors are design awards such as the HIA Sunshine Coast/Wide Bay Awards Interior Designer of the Year - Commendation, Kitchen Designer of the Year and Bathroom Designer of the Year. Having worked with a broad range of clients from f rst-time investors to seasoned developers, Eileen

“My client was very clear about his preferences for the f nishes and the look of the home as a whole. I designed the kitchen and bathroom cabinetry and in doing this it was important to me to acknowledge and complement the architects design intent. We collaborated closely in the selection of the f nishes such as the stone on the f oors and bench tops, paint colours, veneers, screen wood and soft furnishings,” says Eileen.

is familiar with the concerns and queries of the uninitiated and experienced. Eileen explains how she approaches her client’s projects to achieve a resolute that exceeds expectations. “Engaging an interior designer means you have greater access to innovative product and ideas that are not readily available in the retail sector, says Eileen.” “As a professional I provide a combination of services that produce an interior that looks good from every angle within a specif c budget. A combination of materials and f nishes are used to create a mood and

style that you enjoy coming home to every day.” “The process is largely driven by the building schedule and the scope of services offered. Once the interior is formally commissioned, the interior design team sets about providing solutions staged in a process as follows; schematic design, design development and construction documentation.” “Engaging a qualif ed interior designer will ensure a smooth design process that will transform your project into a successful outcome. Well thought-out decisions and inspired solutions will save possibly thousands of dollars on what may have been a series of bad choices across the board. Bad choices can result in costly mistakes or a less than satisfying outcome” If you were to ask a former client of Eileen Middleton what they would recommend as the most important advice that they would give someone who was considering building or renovating they would probably agree with Lesley and Rod O’Leary from Crest Apartments in Buderim who say, “Employ a recommended interior designer who is on the same wavelength regarding style. The other advantage of working with a professional designer co-ordinating the job, is that she had a very good relationship with the sub-contractors and trades people so there was excellent quality control and no hitches along the way.” “I think most people who use our services today

“This fusion of styles is effectively created by designing the overall space in a beach contemporary style in a well thought-out, simplistic way that is often quite neutral in its detailing. This then becomes the perfect canvas for creating the secondary cultural mood, bringing in a world of colour, pattern and texture through intelligent layering of furniture and decor’ items.” are at some level aware of the services an interior designer can offer. New clients may need the process broken down and the various types of services explained. This helps the process of tailoring a scope of services to suit their needs.” Eileen says. Eileen’s new premise is modern and innovative, and ref ects her attitude toward design. The new studio services as a showroom destination where the latest in cabinets, materials, f nishes, furniture and accessories can be seen, as well as a design consultancy off ce where you can receive helpful advice from Eileen and her well qualif ed team for a wide range of projects. Eileen Middleton Interiors creates stunning interiors.

An ageless beauty for lovers of luxury WORDS Peter Atkinson

J

aguar made an entire business out of making cars that looked old, even when they were brand new. The grand old British brand delighted in the fact that the basic shape of its iconic XJ luxury sedan remained virtually unchanged for the best part of f ve decades. Likewise, its retro-styled S-Type mimicked the classic old Jaguar MkII model of the ‘50s and ‘60s – the perfect car for crusty old gents with leather patches on the sleeves of their tweed jackets. These days, Jaguar is the very opposite of its former self. It makes cars that never seem to age. So adept has Jaguar become at this new trick, in fact, that the oldest member of its current model range still looks new and fresh as a daisy,

despite being almost ready for replacement. I speak of the XF, the sleek, beautifullyproportioned executive sedan that really was the key to Jaguar’s incredible corporate revival over the past few years. When it arrived in 2007 it looked sexier, sportier and more desirable than virtually all of its German-made rivals in the executive sedan segment – and it’s been a sales juggernaut ever since – selling in numbers rarely seen by this iconic brand. Today, it has been joined in the Jaguar showrooms by equally sexy models like the gorgeous XK coupe, the equally shapely XJ limo and, of course, the much-heralded F-Type, which has put the icing on the cake for the reborn Jaguar marque.

Soon they will be joined by Jaguar’s latest baby – the compact-sized XE sedan, which broke cover only a few weeks ago in the big European motor shows and will arrive in Australia sometime next year. So, where does that leave the XF – rapidly approaching its twilight years – and rumoured to be replaced by an all-aluminium model in 2015? Well, surprisingly it doesn’t look old at all. That’s partly due to a major facelift a few years back, which gave it slinky new headlights and a more aggressive treatment of the front grille and air dam. Yet we are amazed how fresh and desirable this car remains. Jaguar, to its credit, has done much to keep the XF at front of mind for potential buyers. The XF can be had with just about any calibre of engine you desire, from eight cylinders down to four, petrol or diesel, although all are channelled through the creamy-smooth ZF eight-speed transmission favoured by a number of leading brands. We’ve driven the XF in most of its guises – most memorably the astonishingly-quick and powerful XF-R with a supercharged V8. Jaguar even unveiled a wagon variant, although that car never made it for sale in Australia. The XF, in its most modern form with a four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol variant can be had for less than $70,000 before you start ticking the extras boxes. That two-litre four – the same as you’ll f nd in the Ecoboost Ford Falcon – might sound like a rather puny engine for such a substantial vehicle and most of us would question the legitimacy of a four-cylinder Jag of any capacity. Yet it produces surprisingly above-adequate performance around town and particularly on the open road. Somewhere between those two extremes lies the three-litre V6 turbo-diesel of our test machine

[

– the XF Luxury Diesel S – which impressed us as quite probably the best all-rounder of the bunch. The Jag’s f agship diesel (there’s also a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel variant) must surely be one of the best oil-burners getting around in this ever-more competitive segment of the market. The Jag’s diesel is at least as quiet and ref ned as any of the Germans, with the possible exception of Audi’s extraordinary twin-turbo diesel V6, which sounds and performs more like a petrol V8. But the XF Diesel S would lose little to any of the others.

Smooth, quiet operation, seamless and effortless power and pleasingly frugal consumption make this a Jag for all seasons. It really does personify the brand’s long-held promise of Grace, Pace and Space. With the rotary gear selector switched to sport mode, we were surprised just how quick this car can be. In terms of responsiveness and mid-range acceleration, it comes to close to matching many of its V8-powered rivals. Yet the diesel still sips fuel at an impressively frugal rate, aided by the stop-start system that kills the engine when you roll to a stop at the lights. Its claimed average of six litres per 100 kilometres rivals many purpose-built economy machines while carrying f ve full-sized passengers and their gear in full comfort.

Equally impressively, it will reach the speed limit in less than six seconds, more than fulf lling the expectations we traditionally hold for cars wearing the leaping cat logo. The Jag’s ride is brilliantly resolved. It soaks up bumps as you’d expect of a luxury machine, yet turns with precision and never feels unsettled or hurried by quick changes of direction. That’s perhaps the XF’s greatest appeal – despite all the sexy lines and smart f nishes – it remains a car that’s eminently easy to live with. Of course, there are the little touches of drama – the start button that pulses like a heartbeat when you enter the car; the theatrical start-up routine when the airconditioning vents seductively open and the rotary gear selector rises from the centre console. When we f rst laid eyes on this car seven years ago we wondered whether those were gimmicks that might grow tiresome over time. I’m happy to say that they – like the appeal of the XF itself – show no signs of growing old.

RACQ presented Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Warriors with a cheque for $55,926 last week, the proceeds of the successful Zoom Weekend Father’s Day fundraiser in September. Earlier this year, RACQ donated two specially-equipped rescue vans. RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie says motor vehicles are the single biggest cause of animal trauma. Of more than 570 sick or injured animals treated at Australia Zoo’s hospital last month, 30 per cent were hit by a car. “Motorists kill hundreds of animals every year by driving without proper attention,” Ritchie says. “It’s important to pay attention to all potential hazards, whether that’s a person or an animal.” IMAGE: BEN BEADEN / AUSTRALIA ZOO

Spring clean your garden Whether you are planning to sell or are staying put, it’s time to get on top of your garden before the warm weather really sets in.

I

t’s a busy time for the Coast’s landscapers, nurseries and garden suppliers as locals get outside and get gardening. Whether it’s to get a property ready to sell or rent, or just because they want to enjoy the summer months in a new-look backyard, the Coast is buzzing with green thumbs. And it’s not just flowers and plants that are flying off the shelves – paving and pebbles, mulch and pavers, ag pipe and gravel are all hot sellers at this time of year. So what should you do if you want to smarten up your backyard? Here are a few tips: 1. When choosing new plants, avoid creating a messy or overwhelming space by opting for similar-looking shrubs and bushes. Create interest by mixing up the heights of the plant rather than going for lots of different colours and textures. Australian natives are a good choice, but you can mix them up with exotics that complement each other. 2. It’s not all about the plants. Take a look at your hardscaping features such as fences, rock walls, water features and decks. Replace and repaint these if they are looking tired. 3. Buyers will appreciate a low-maintenance yard, and if you’re not selling, you’ll enjoy it too. Choosing native plants and those suited to our climate and soils is the way to go. Consider dense plantings – this will protect the soil from the harsh sun and reduce the likelihood of weeds. If you like the look of succulents, these are a great choice as they require minimal water and attention. 4. Whether you are starting with a bare patch of dirt or already have a garden in place, always design your garden with the architecture and design of the home in mind. A cute cottage garden beside an ultra-contemporary home just won’t look right.

40.indd 1

Tips to getting your garden ready for sale • Keep on top of weeds – potential buyers will be turned off by a garden full of weeds. • Does your front path need attention? Get onto it before the buyers arrive. A path should accommodate two people walking side by side, and f x any bumps that could be a potential tripping hazard. • Lawns can be high-maintenance in the hot summer months, and if yours is full of bindis and looking patchy and tired, buyers will notice. If you have the time and energy, it’s really worth considering ripping out your lawns and replacing with paths and garden beds. • Get mulching. It’s amazing how some fresh mulch can really lift the look of the entire garden.

What do buyers like? If your property is in the more affordable end of the market, it’s probably not wise to spend tens of thousands on a fancy water feature, but a bit of effort and some dollars invested in getting your yard up to scratch will always be appreciated by potential buyers. Real estate agents tell MPP that buyers respond to neat yards that have simple designs. Yards that have a theme – such as tropical or native – always go down well with buyers too. Solar lights and outdoor seating are worthwhile investments. You don’t need to go overboard but if it is obvious to buyers that the garden needs work they will often overestimate how much it will cost to get the garden up to scratch, potentially affecting how much they will offer. Good landscaping gives the seller much more leverage during the negotiation process.

What’s hot in the garden? • Herbs and vegies – both culinary and medicinal herbs are popular sellers. Easy to grow in containers, herbs and small edibles such as tomatoes and lettuces are great for gardens of all sizes. In fact all types of productive gardens are becoming more popular. • Child-friendly spaces – getting the kids involved in planting and cultivating plants, herbs and vegies is high on the list of many home owners. • Getting professional help – landscape designers are being seen as a worthwhile investment by more and more home owners. • Great furniture – as we spend more time outdoors, home owners are prepared to invest in quality outdoor furniture and soft furnishings. • Feature walls – stop by the paint shop on your way from the nursery to add a pop of bright orange, teal and purple to the garden wall. It will really make your place stand out from your neighbour’s. • Lighting – it’s no longer enough to simply illuminate the garden space, home owners want specialty lighting that adds drama to the backyard. Auctioneer of the Year awards

T

wo of Queensland’s top real estate professionals competed at the Australasian Auctioneer of the Year Championships in New Zealand last week. Jason Andrew (pictured) and Justin Nickerson were among just four f nalists at the prestigious event in Auckland, which was won by New Zealander Daniel Coulson. Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) CEO Antonia Mercorella congratulated the pair for representing Queensland at the championships. “Jason and Justin are both exceptional auctioneers and it’s fantastic to see their skills recognised at the highest level,” she says. “They’re both a credit to the Queensland real estate profession and a great advertisement for the skill and dedication each brings to auctioneering. “Just making it to the f nal of these championships is an enormous achievement in itself.” Andrew was named Australasian Auctioneering Champion in 2010, the highest industry accolade

available. He was also named REIQ Auctioneer of the Year in 2009, 2012 and 2014 and is now Queensland’s most awarded auctioneer. Nickerson was named 2013 REIQ Auctioneer of the Year. He was also a f nalist in the 2013 Australasian Auctioneering Championships. The pair was chosen to compete at the Australasian Championships following the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) Auctioneer of the Year competition heats earlier this month. The annual event tests Queensland’s top auctioneers on their knowledge of best practice and legislation as well as their performance in a simulated auction situation that includes complex bidding sequences and testing questions.

The construction industry continues to gain momentum on the Sunshine Coast with the latest f gures showing $340 million worth of building approvals in the last quarter – a 27 per cent increase compared to the same quarter last year. Amongst the approvals were residential developments at Meridan Plains, Sunshine Cove and Sippy Downs. The latest yearly f gures also show strong growth in the housing sector with a 63 per cent increase in building approvals for homes. The increase in construction activity has seen 120 calls a day to the Sunshine Coast Council with queries about developments.

Development indicators July to September 2014: • $340 million of total building approvals compared to the $267 million in the same period last year. • 636 lots endorsed by the council compared to 179 lots in the same quarter last year.

Position, privacy, potential and views are just a few words to describe this home that towers over the south-facing Buderim escarpment. Featuring spectacular 180-degree views never to be built out, this is arguably the best spot on top of Buderim. This home is privately positioned on 3289 square metres of useable land that’s a short walk to Buderim villages’ vibrant strip of cafes, restaurants and boutiques. ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Professional Aries – strive to anticipate work-place problems before they actually happen. For non-working rams – think of ways you can contribute to the world around you. When it comes to financial assistance for family or friends, aim between generous and realistic.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] The full moon (in tenacious Taurus) encourages permanence in partnerships, but that doesn’t mean you have to get stuck in a boring rut. Single bulls – look for love with someone who is wise and mature. And be emotionally honest with yourself.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Use your imagination to get to the bottom of a problem that’s had you stumped for a while. Mercury moves into your wellbeing zone on the weekend (where it stays until November 28) so take the time to educate yourself about healthy eating, exercise and lifestyle choices.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Crabs are often teary on a full moon but this one’s in earthy Taurus, so you’ll feel more grounded than usual. Work matters and group activities are favoured, as Uranus and the full moonbeams boost your creativity and networking skills.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] With Jupiter jumping through your sign it’s time to enjoy yourself. Home is where the heart is as you use your lion’s den as the creative canvas on which you can express yourself via cooking, crafting, painting, gardening, renovating or interior design.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] This week you’re more experimental than usual, as the full moon activates your adventure zone. But you may encounter problems with a stressed relative or a neurotic neighbour, as they misunderstand where you are coming from.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] How’s your budget and bank balance going? Aim to be less extravagant with cash and credit. Librans are the fabulous fashionistas of the zodiac, but don’t just focus on your outer appearance – learn to appreciate your inner beauty as well.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Expect a satisfying week, as the sun/Pluto sextile provides plenty of opportunities to sharpen your communication skills. Plus, with Venus visiting your sign, you’re at your charming Scorpio best. Don’t hesitate to call in old favours – in the nicest possible way.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] On Wednesday, ricochet out of your comfort zone and tackle an adventurous project. Then the full moon lights up your work zone, so you’re keen to be in charge. But are you being the boss – or just plain bossy? Utilise your leadership skills in clever and creative ways.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] The full moon favours socialising and communication as you mix and mingle with a range of people. Singles – love and the internet are linked, so join a few online dating sites ASAP! But be careful how you communicate with loved ones on the weekend.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] With so many planets visiting your career zone, find ways you can be more creative and conscientious on the job. It’s also time to spruce up your work space or home office. The full moon could also herald a move, renovations, guests arriving or domestic dramas.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Are your aspirations ambitious enough? There’s no room for false modesty or passive procrastination this week, Pisces – and don’t get stuck in the past! The full moon stimulates your sense of adventure, as you transform an abstract idea into a practical project.

ESTUARY: Bream are still about in good numbers, working from Maroochy Bar to Channel Island with yabbies and fowl gut the best baits. Flathead are taking a mix of lures and drifted baits from the northern bank of the Maroochy River, and Twin Waters weir to the bar. A few sand and mud crabs are in the deeper channels up to the Motorway Bridge. SURF: Some good holes between Maroochy Surf Club and Maroochy Bar, which have been returning quality bream and flathead at dawn and dusk, using mullet fillet and baby blue pilchards, with the occasional tailor a surprise catch. OFFSHORE: The close-in reefs of Currimundi, Coolum and The Gneerings have been returning quality mixed reef fish on cut baits and squid. The Barwon Banks have been firing for pearl perch and snapper on pillies and squid. Spanner crabs are on, but not in great numbers. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam returning golden perch and bass with fish rising to the surface to find the warmer conditions, this thermo-cline needs to be worked with shallow divers and floated live shrimps. Rotate colours on lures until the successful combination is found. Borumba Dam firing for saratoga with rises everywhere, hook ups are the challenge. Persevere and you will be rewarded, whether fly fishing, baiting or luring.

Now this is a two edge sword. I found a clip on YouTube of John John Florence getting his first invitation to surf in the Eddie Aikau last year. This contest is only run when the surf is 20 foot plus. Big respect to get an invite, and well deserved as he is electric. So my question is what would you do if you received an invite to paddle out in massive surf, knowing that your hold downs could be longer then 3 minutes? Me? Yep, I am fond of the foetal position. Now this weekend – keep an eye out Sunday after lunch when the wind is turning from north to the south and a big jump in the swell on Monday morning, so they say.
