ike many, I was shocked by the death of Phillip Hughes in a freak cricket accident, but I’ve been heartened by how it has brought out the best in people. What left a lasting impression on me was the twitter campaign #putoutyourbats, which had people post photos of their old cricket bats in honour of the former Australian cricketer. It was social media at its best bringing a community together at a time of need. The death also took me back 20 years to when I was barely out of school and a former classmate was killed after being struck by a cricket ball - it was about the same time one of my good mates was killed in a car crash. I think of them often; mainly about how devastating the loss has been for their families. I also wonder what they would have done with their lives if given the same time as me. In this edition of My Weekly Preview, we look at a group of people making the most of every minute. GetUp! is becoming a louder voice in Australian politics and it’s out to save the ABC. Also, we have the f rst part of our Year in Review series, which includes the biggest stories of 2014. As always, there’s plenty of fashion, socials and travel. I look forward to talking with you again next week.

AGONY AUNTY
THERE ARE ADVANTAGES TO BEING THE COUNTRY’S FAVOURITE AUNTY. WHEN THE GOVERNMENT MADE DEEP CUTS TO THE ABC THE RESPONSE WAS QUICK, CALCULATED AND EFFECTIVE. WELCOME TO THE NEW WORLD OF AUSTRALIAN POLITICS – WHERE IT’S NOT ONLY THE PARTIES THAT RUN CAMPAIGNS. WORDS: RICHARD O’LEARY Banana power at a rally organised by GetUp! in Sydney
F
riday September 6, 2013: With just a few hours left in the federal election campaign, Liberal leader Tony Abbott stands in an empty Penrith football stadium for one of his last interviews before Australians vote the next day. Opinion polls point to him becoming Australia’s 28th Prime Minister. Mr Abbott looks comfortable in the obligatory dark suit, complemented by a sky blue silk tie. SBS newsreader Anton Enus eventually lands at the question of funding for public broadcasters. The future Prime Minister remains composed: “No cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST…” He pauses slightly and raises his left eyebrow and finishes. “…and no cuts to the ABC or SBS.” It follows the script the coalition has used throughout the campaign; minimise risk, stay a small target, don’t give an inch. There’s a lot at stake. Abbott is less than a day from realising an ambition he has worked towards his entire adult life. His unambiguous answer could create problems for later, but later can wait. Fast forward 14 months and later has come. The Abbott government has announced it will cut $254 million (about five per cent) from the ABC budget over the next five years. The move has raised more than an eyebrow. University of the Sunshine Coast politics lecturer Bronwyn Stevens says the change of heart is eerily similar to Julia Gillard’s broken promise on the carbon tax which Abbott pursued with such vigour during her Prime Ministership. “It just reinforces a common belief that all politicians are as bad as each other,” she says. Member for Fisher Mal Brough says it’s reasonable to ask a business to deliver an “efficiency dividend” when the country is borrowing “a million dollars an hour to pay the interest on the bill the previous government ran

up”. It may be an easier argument for him to mount than other backbenchers, as the Sunshine Coast bureau which covers his electorate is not expected to lose staff or services, and he concedes the original commitment was a mistake. “I’m quite sure that Tony has made a number of comments, and that is probably one of them that he would rather not have made, but that is history. It is there, people will judge him and the government on those comments. But it’s very simple, if you continue down the path we’re on (national debt), it is a path with a very nasty end, and we are doing our best to change things around,” he says. Those sentiments haven’t appeased the grassroots groups who have previously fought the good fight for the ABC – and who have become the unwitting beneficiaries of the funding brouhaha. President of Friends of the ABC Queensland Ross Dowell says he’s struggling with the amount of calls from people wanting to become members. “Very, very busy. I can barely keep the batteries on the mobile phone charged enough. What they are saying is that they feel deeply hurt that an organisation in Australia that they feel is their cultural ownership is under great threat,” he says. Dowell’s group will target government senators to try and get the decision reversed, but the ABC’s greatest ally is an independent advocacy group established just eight years ago. GetUp! has pledged to “hold politicians to account”, the 21st century equivalent of the old
Democrats slogan “we’ll keep the bastards honest”. But Get Up! is not a political party, nor does it have an affiliation with any party. Ironically, this may account for its growing membership – 670,000 people with at least 10,000 on the Sunshine Coast. In comparison, the Liberal Party has approximately 80,000 members, the ALP about 60,000. GetUp! is a political phenomenon with few parallels in Australian history. It has utilised modern technology to create a modern movement; one which can launch a campaign almost instantly through its online and social
For him [Abbott] to turn around and make cuts to the ABC and SBS when that was a commitment made just a day before he was elected is a real betrayal of the Australian public Kelsey Cooke, director of GetUp!s ABC strategy media channels. It uses these to raise issues with members and ask for donations, which provides the funds for the organisation to spread the word to an even bigger audience. It describes itself as progressive and claims past victories on multiple fronts: getting children out of detention centres; winning a High Court challenge to overturn a decision that would have cost 100,000 Australians the chance to vote; winning a Federal Court challenge to make it legal for Australians to enrol to vote online; and uniting M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

ABC cuts by the numbers $254 million budget cut over 5 years 400 job losses ( nearly 10% of workforce ) state editions of news program 7.30 scrapped Adelaide TV production closed state-based local sports coverage scrapped five regional outposts shut down Lateline moved to a new time on ABC News 24 100,000 Australians against the proposed national mandatory internet filter. Protecting the ABC holds a special place in the heart of the grassroots organisation, being one of the issues on which it was founded. Even before the latest announcement it had a petition underway to keep Aunty “fully-funded”. It has now surpassed 268,000 signatures, the most popular petition in the group’s history, just ahead of the campaign to save the Great Barrier Reef. It also organised rallies at half of the country’s electorate offices prior to the original cuts to the ABC in the last federal budget. The director of GetUp!’s ABC strategy Kelsey Cooke says the new campaign will go much further. “For him (Abbott) to turn around and make cuts to the ABC and SBS when that was a commitment made just a day before he was elected is a real betrayal of the Australian public, she says. Thousands of people have already donated to a

Facebook campaign which has paid for the Abbott SBS interview to be delivered into the news feeds of nearly 400,000 Australian Facebook users. That’s seen 140,000 Australians watch the video in just three days – and this is one situation where it’s not a good thing for people to Like you. Each time a Facebook user Likes the post, it’s the equivalent of taking a small electronic baseball bat to the government. Another 15,000 people have viewed it on YouTube. It’s estimated a further eight million Australians watched media coverage of the recent pro-ABC rallies GetUp! helped organise around the country. The response has been so overwhelming, GetUp! is now considering television, radio and print ads in key marginal seats. “What GetUp! members are focussed on now is the long game. It’s not so much about this round of cuts, it’s about what comes in the future and how history will be written. If we let the Abbott government get away with cuts at this point without a strong and resounding public backlash,
It’s personal for this young protestor in Melbourne
they’ll feel as though it would be easy to make further cuts in the future,” Cooke says. And the leaders of all parties may tread a little more warily in the closing hours of election campaigns, knowing that a new political beast is on the loose, one which can Like you to death.

Year in review
Sekisui House
major amendment to the planning scheme for the Sekisui House site. Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson says the council’s consideration of a proposed planning scheme amendment will not be the end of the line for public consultation and community submissions. “If a decision were made by council next year to propose a planning scheme amendment, this will only start a process throughout which the community has input,” Jamieson says. “It does not amend the planning scheme at that time. “Council will need to consult the planning minister and any proposed amendment that is subsequently released for public feedback would be just that – a proposed amendment.”
It’s the biggest tourism development proposed for the Coast in two decades and it is causing quite a stir – but not just for its economic and tourism potential. The billion dollar Sekisui House draft plan for a 20-hectare site at Yaroomba has caused a community backlash from a number of outraged resident groups campaigning against the development. The problem? It doesn’t comply with the Sunshine Coast Council’s existing planning scheme. The proposal is for 17 buildings on the site, which will include a five-star resort, residential, retirement and aged care facilities and some retail outlets with buildings ranging in height between three and 10 storeys (39 metres). The area is zoned for a maximum of four storeys and the developer wants the council to amend the planning scheme to allow the extra height. It argues increased height delivers a smaller building footprint and enables twice as much open space as a low-density design. If it gets the green light, the project is expected to create 4500 jobs during construction and 620 once the resort opens. It’s also estimated the project would add $25 million annually to the gross regional product. The Sunshine Coast Council has postponed until next year any decision on a potential

Sunshine Coast Marathon. The International Rally of Queensland might not draw as many contestants or spectators, but with global media coverage it generates about $5.5 million to the region. Noosa Jazz Festival continues to be a drawcard along with the Noosa Food and Wine Festival and the Sunshine Coast Real Food Festival.

million of economic activity to the region annually. Two global phenomena – the Tough Mudder and the Swisse Color Run – returned to the Coast for the second year, each attracting about 12,000 participants. About 26,000 tickets were sold for the eighth annual Caloundra Music Festival, with more than half of ticket sales going to people from outside the Sunshine Coast region. Headline acts such as Tina Arena, John Butler and Wolfmother were among the 75 performers from a range of music genres. The performers included 28 local bands, 38 national bands and nine international acts. Sporting events continued to be a major drawcard to the Coast with the Noosa and Mooloolaba triathlons, the Ironman 70.3 and the
The year started with massive changes to local government on the Sunshine Coast with the landmark decision for Noosa to de-amalgamate from the Sunshine Coast coming into play on January 1. The Noosa, Maroochy and Noosa councils were amalgamated in 2008 as part of a state-wide reform of local government boundaries. In March 2013, Noosa residents voted overwhelmingly to de-amalgamate from the Sunshine Coast Council. The Noosa Council includes Peregian Beach, Lake Weyba and Cooroy. Eumundi and Coolum remain within the Sunshine Coast Council. In July the Sunshine Coast Council unanimously agreed to oppose a proposed boundary realignment for Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs with mayor Mark Jameison saying it would be too disruptive to the community and erode business confidence. f you think moving house is hard, imagine moving a school. That’s the huge task staff, parents and students have begun at the Montessori International College, which is moving from Sippy Downs to a 22-hectare site at Forest Glen. Principal Chiray Fitton says the $10 million, purpose-built campus will offer educational programs for children from birth to 18 years of age. “It’s been a great effort by everyone in the college community, everyone has pitched-in and all the materials from the classrooms and
playgrounds have been packed,” she says. “This has been five years in the making and we’re all excited that it’s coming to fruition. “Montessori is all about putting the child first – and the new college has been designed with that in mind. “The first building, the Round House, will become the educational heart of the new campus as the college strives to become the international benchmark for Montessori education. “A flat roof allows future expansion upwards while providing an experimental learning space for students; including noise monitoring, air quality monitoring, and green roof trials. “We’re an independent, non-denominational school renowned for our innovation – and the new campus will allow us to take the learning experiences for Artist’s impression our children to a new level.”

Are your Christmas lights a fire hazard? Coast families are being reminded to stay f re smart as they dress up their homes for the festive season. It’s important to check all lights before decorating your tree, house or backyard and dispose of any that are damaged or frayed. Acting Queensland Fire and Emergency Services commissioner Mark Roche warns against leaving the lights unattended for hours,
overloading power boards and leaving candles unattended. He advises using specially designed lights when decorating outdoors, as internal lights are not designed for outdoor conditions and could create a f re hazard. Graham Metcalf from Energex advises people to get lights professionally checked or dispose of them if there are any safety doubts.

The latter is also known for an elaborate courtship dance that can include 20 minutes of bowing, honking, whistling and bill clacking. What I love to do most is: Curl up and have a peaceful nap in a sunny spot. Why I want to be a part of your home: because I have waited a very long time in the refuge raising a litter of kittens. Nearly all of them have found their own homes, so now it is my turn for a home of my own. What you should know about me: I am a female domestic shorthair cat aged 20 months. I’m a gorgeous grey tabby. I don’t mind a cuddle when it suits me, and I am OK around another cat. I would make a wonderful addition to most homes. I am de-sexed, vaccinated and micro-chipped.

Choccy male staffy cross, 18 months What I love to do most is: go for plenty of walks and be your best friend. Why I want to be a part of your home: I came from the pound as an unclaimed dog and I would love to have a place of my own and a family to love me. What you should know about me: I am an 18-month-old male staffy cross and I have a loving and friendly nature. I am OK around other dogs and would love beach walks, and a loving home. I am de-sexed vaccinated and micro-chipped.

App of the week By Paul Hamilton
TouchCast: Imagine
FREE Want to be part of the world’s biggest sing-along? One of the most powerful developments in technology has been the ability for people to connect on a global stage. This app takes global collaboration to a whole new level. The TouchCast: Imagine project is an interactive digital initiative that aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by children around the globe. TouchCast: Imagine allows users to record their own version of John Lennon’s iconic song Imagine as part of a multi-lingual version of the anthem, to be remixed by producer David Guetta. The project is in partnership with UNICEF and its ambassadors, such as Katy Perry and Angelique Kidjo, will also take part. Guetta’s Imagine remix will be released on New Years Eve. TouchCast: Imagine is available for IOS for free. Paul Hamilton is the Primary ICT co-ordinator at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. Bits and Bytes >> Gadget Awards
Apple’s iPhone has scored a double win by picking up phone of the year and gadget of the year at the O2 Pocket-lint Gadget Awards. The awards, run by technology and gadget site Pocket-lint, are voted by a combination of industry expert judges, technology journalists and the public. Sega’s Alien: Isolation picked up the award for best game, ahead of big money releases Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Destiny. Pocket-lint chief executive and founder Stuart Miles says: “It’s really good to see the panel of judges, industry, and public pull together to let consumers know the best gadgets of the year.” Apple’s iPad Air 2 picked up tablet of the year, and the MacBook Air won best laptop, while the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 was named phablet of the year. Wearable technology has also hugely expanded in 2014, and the best wearable award went to new LG’s G Watch R, ahead of the Pebble Steel smartwatch. Sony won the war of the consoles as Playstation 4 triumphed over Xbox One to claim the home entertainment device award.

Where life lessons and lager meet TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe from 92.7 MIX FM’S Todd and Sami gives his opinion on the best brews of the week.
IT’s been a big week at the bar with many lessons learnt since we last caught up. All my life I thought air was free; then I bought a packet of chips. Sandwiches taste better when cut into triangles. Everything in life happens for a reason – a lot of the time that reason is that I’m stupid and make bad decisions. Another big lesson I picked up is when a woman says “sorry?” in conversation, it’s not because she didn’t hear you, it’s because she’s giving you a chance to change what you said. Sadly, I learnt that we live in an age where home-delivered Indian food gets to your place quicker than the police do. But possibly the most disturbing fact I’ve learnt is that every day, thousands of innocent plants are killed by vegetarians. Did you know that? I feel so ignorant. The great news is, we can help end this violence – simply eat bacon. Finally, the very personal lesson I acquired this week has led me to make the following public statement: I don’t drink anymore. I don’t drink any less either. So this leads us to our brew of choice this week and it’s a homegrown ripper. Known around the nation as ‘the
beer from up here’, The Great Northern is a damn f ne lager. The Great Northern Brewing Company is a tribute to the original GN Brewery, which produced local beers in Cairns in the 1930s. The key to this winning lager is it’s brewed longer for that super crisp refreshing taste. This is a cracking full-strength sessional beer that’s made by Queenslanders for Queenslanders. It smacks of sun, surf, beach camping and f shing and this summer I guarantee you’ll be all over it like sunburn on a Scottish tourist. Just a tip to really embrace the super crispness, the GN is in full f ight when served absolutely icy cold. Proud to give the Queensland Great Northern Lager a solid 4 out of 5 thumbs up.

Audi RS7: a beast in designer clothing WORDS Peter Atkinson
I
magine, if you can, Godzilla wearing an Armani suit. A tricky image, I know, and an unlikely one. But no more difficult to get your head around than Audi’s extraordinary RS7 – a car that defies most of the laws of physics and all of the laws of reason. Logic says cars that are sporty to drive and sexy to look at are usually not very practical. It also says luxury cars that are big, safe and heavily-stacked with comfort and technology often sacrifice performance and handling. Audi’s RS7 is rewriting the rules. Somehow, the German manufacturer’s high-end hatchback manages to straddle three seemingly incompatible personalities – supercar performance,
limousine comfort and family practicality. That’s quite a trick. The RS badge signifies that this car belongs to the company’s high-performance range, going head to head with the likes of Mercedes’ AMG and BMW’s M-sport variants. In Audi lexicon, the 7 means it also resides towards the top of the tree for size and specification. So we were prepared for something special when this formidable machine came to visit, boasting “brutal performance and breathtaking design”. It certainly ticks both of those boxes. Audi has done the luxury part particularly well in the RS7, borrowing all manner of bespoke comforts from the big, sleek A7 Sportback upon
which it is based to deliver a car that pampers as well as it powers. The practicality comes from the Audi’s roomy interior, which accommodates four adults in custommade, leather-trimmed comfort yet still affords enough cargo space for four sets of golf clubs – or luggage for two. But it’s the supercar part that most impresses in the RS7. Despite its imposing size, this is one of the most lethally-quick machines we’ve driven in quite a while. Its 0-100 kilometres per hour sprint time of just 3.9 seconds puts it into the same performance league as Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche. The Audi’s top speed of 307 kilometres per hour would also make it comfortable in the company of most V8 Supercars for a tilt around Bathurst. Providing that impetus is a 4-litre, twinturbocharged high-performance V8 that Audi, quite succinctly, describes as “ferocious” – with 412 snarling kilowatts and an equally impressive 700 Newton metres of torque. The temptation is to spin all four wheels at once, but the RS7 seems to grip more tightly to the road the harder it is driven. Almost a fifth of the body is made from aluminium, which makes it 15 per cent lighter than comparable steel construction. Yet despite this pulverising performance it can be as tame as a pussycat to drive in day-to-day running. It’s not until you walk around it, or try to squeeze it into a tight city car park, that you fully appreciate the size and grandeur of this vehicle. It’s more than five metres long and has a wheelbase of almost three metres. The RS7’s technology suite is long and impressive. It will all but drive itself on the open road, an adaptive cruise control (part of a $10,000 Assistance Package) keeping it a safe distance from cars in front continued page 36>

from page 34> and braking to avoid obstacles at speeds up to double our legal limits. Audi’s Drive Select System can deliver a range of driving experiences from full comfort mode, to full Dynamic setting where the RS7 really reveals its claws. In full Dynamic mode, there is no compromise at all. Gear changes become quite brutal, matching the staggering acceleration, which thunders under power and crackles and burbles when you ease off the throttle.
In this mode, the RS7’s ride becomes firm to the point of harshness. In its rawest form, the RS7 provides handling and poise to belie its size and bulk, thanks to those suspension adjustments and the prodigious grip of its Quattro allwheel-drive system. Just starting the car up is quite a theatrical event. The centre screen seductively emerges from its little nook and even the tiny speakers in the superb Bang and Olufsson sound system pop up their heads from near the bottom corners of the windscreen. The real theatre, of course, happens when you unleash that extraordinary 4-litre, twin turbocharged V8 and the full glory of its quad exhaust pipes are set in tune. It’s not exactly a car that’s designed for chugging around town, where your fuel consumption will soar alarmingly into the high teens. Of course, this kind of performance doesn’t come cheap. You’ll spend more than a quarter of a million just to get it on the road and that’s just the starting point.
If the garden-variety, $238,500 version isn’t quite enough to satisfy you, Audi is glad to add a few more trinkets, and many more thousands to the price tag, with a series of premium packages. Like I said, a bit like Godzilla in that smart Armani suit. One feature that didn’t win our favour was the lane departure system featuring an active steering feature that ushers you back to the centre of the road when the car senses you’re drifting across the outside or centre lines. It’s clever, but I found the experience of the car steering itself a bit eerie. The quilted effect on the plush leather seats, while undoubtedly a high-end treatment, wasn’t to my taste either. But the seats themselves are fabulously comfortable. Beyond that, I found it very difficult to knock a chip off this remarkable machine. As well as being one of the most beautiful cars I’ve driven in recent memory, it’s also one of the most brutal – a rare combination of character, comfort and class.

Sales growing Steady growth in Brisbane home sales has started to spread around the state, and the Sunshine Coast is one of the benef ciaries.
R
esidential real estate sales in Brisbane have hit their highest level this decade amid rising median house values in many parts of Queensland, including the Sunshine Coast. Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) CEO Antonia Mercorella says sales volumes in some of the state’s key regional markets had also hit a post-2010 peak, with accompanying rises in median house values. She says Brisbane’s median house value increased by 1.4 per cent in the three months to September, the same quarterly increase recorded three months ago. “Since entering the recovery stage of the cycle back in June 2013, Brisbane has recorded consecutive quarterly increases in median values, with an average quarterly increase of 1.7 per cent,” Mercorella says. “In the 12 months to September, median house values rose 6.6 per cent in Brisbane with buyers increasingly confident of steady and sustainable growth going into 2015. “Sales in the $1 million-plus price bracket in Brisbane are at their strongest level since 2009, rising 17 per cent over the three months to September. There are also encouraging signs in the Brisbane unit market, with median values rising 5.2 per cent in the 12 months to September.” Mercorella says the Gold and Sunshine Coast house and unit markets are also enjoying solid
[ 38 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ D E CE M B E R 5, 2 0 1 4
38.indd 1
median value growth. “The market fundamentals in South-East Queensland are very strong – we’re seeing quicker selling times, reduced vendor discounting and a higher percentage of profitmaking sales,” she says. “This growth in the South-East is also spreading further afield, with some of our major regional centres really starting to shine. Cairns has emerged as the star performer of Queensland real estate, with strong sales volumes sparking a 2.4 per rise in median values in the three months to September. Toowoomba is also enjoying good growth, with median house values up 1.4 per cent in the three months to September. Values were steady on the Fraser Coast and in Bundaberg. “Gladstone, Mackay and Rockhampton saw a slight easing in median house values during the same period, while Townsville held relatively steady,” she says. “However there are some very encouraging signs in these key regional housing markets heading into the New Year. “The REIQ’s September Quarter Queensland Market Monitor will reveal double digit sales volume growth in most of the State’s regional centres. This sales growth is likely to be accompanied by some good rises in median values, so 2015 is certainly shaping as an exciting year for real estate in regional Queensland.”
What is a median property price? The median price is calculate by taking a set of sales prices, arranging them from lowest to highest and then f nding the set’s middle value. The REIQ says this method of determining prices is “simple to calculate and, unlike averages, the corresponding median sale price is not signif cantly affected by very low or high sale prices”. The median differs from the mean price, which is calculated by adding all of the sales prices together and dividing by the number of sales – another way that you could work out the average sales price. Analysts and institutions like the REIQ like to use the median rather than mean price because they believe it is more indicative of what is going on in the market. For would-be property buyers and sellers, the median prices give a good indication of market trends and conditions, and is helpful to work out prices of individual properties (handy for sellers wanting to put a sale price on their homes and for buyers to see if a selling price is reasonable). A drawback of this method, though, is that if in a certain time frame a large number of very expensive, or very affordable homes sold, it can skew the numbers and you’ll notice the median price dipping or rising suddenly. That’s why looking at median prices is something you should do over a period of time, to take note of trends, rather than just looking at one set of median prices in isolation. The REIQ also notes that a limitation of the method is that median prices don’t consider an individual home’s characteristics, such as its land size, number of bedrooms and other features that may enhance its price. It’s also important to be aware of other things going on in a property market – say a big release of homes to the market, or a period when very few properties were sold.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Education, exercise, travel and international connections are favoured this week, as you give your mind and body a thorough workout. You have much to learn and many exciting people to meet and exotic places to visit. Single rams, you could meet someone via a colleague.
TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Bulls can be a lazy, languid bunch. With Mars marching through your work zone you need to blast out of your comfort zone and be professionally proactive. It’s time to get off your beautiful bovine behind and make things happen
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] It will be hard for others to keep up with you this week. You’ve got work to tackle, appointments to keep, parties to attend; plans to initiate, books and blogs to read, plus much talking, texting and tweeting to do. Just make sure you actually achieve something!
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Crabs can be incredibly self-absorbed but the more you concentrate on the needs of others, the better the week will be. You’re feeling romantic. So it’s the perfect time to pamper your partner with lashings of love and extra TLC.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Jupiter is jumping through your sign so it’s your time to shine! Worries slide off you like water off a duck’s back. Whatever comes your way, you’ll handle it with plenty of aplomb and loquaciousness. Emily Dickinson: “The mere sense of living is joy enough.”
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] With Venus shifting into your friendship zone it’s time to focus on mates who support your endeavours and encourage your dreams. Your motto for the moment is from Jim Morrison: “A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself.”
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Venus is in your domestic zone so your relationship with a family member starts to improve, as you see things from their point-of-view. When it comes to your future goals, don’t just talk about them. It’s a wonderful week to de-clutter and beautify your living space.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Are wonderful things happening to everyone else? Do you feel overlooked and under-appreciated? Avoid being a bitter sour-puss. Saturn is in your sign so success has been slowed down. Be persistent and take a long-term view.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Sagittarians are in super chatty mode! Jovial Jupiter then links up with Mercury and the moon, which boosts your confidence, emotional wellbeing and sense of humour. You’re also keen to soak up overseas influences via travel, languages or connecting with international friends.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Goats can work too hard and be grumpy. But, with vivacious Venus vamping into your sign you’re feeling unusually flirtatious and fabulous. It will be easy to get what you want over the festive season if you stop being a control-freak and try a ‘softly-softly’ approach.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Are you stuck in cruise control? Mighty Mars encourages you to be proactive about personal projects. Strive to be bold and beautiful. If you’re not confident about your talents, why should anyone else sing your praises? On Friday, aim to help loved ones achieve their dreams.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] This week many Pisceans are basking in the public spotlight in some way. Study and education are also highlighted. Plus, with Venus entering your networking zone, it’s time to boost your social media profile by connecting with family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
There can only be one, well so the saying goes. Next week the Pipeline Masters starts and it’s on between Medina, Fanning and Slater. If it’s big and they are predicting 15ft for the final day Slater is definitely favourite while Medina’s head could well be a melting pot of stress. How deep will he sit? I reckon Fanning is in the best position. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Unlike Tony Abbott I will admit I am wrong. Yep, last week there were a few waves when I said there would be none. Oops. This weekend? Maybe or maybe not – either way get up early. Go Slater!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Quality whiting are taking yabbies on the rising tide opposite the Bli Bli oyster leases. You’ll get flathead on lures, slow trolling along the banks of Bli Bli. Mud crabs are on the move with the recent rains. Mangrove jack are responding to the hot steamy conditions in Petrie and Eudlo Creeks and you’ll catch the odd one right through the river system. SURF: Sand whiting and dart are in low tide gutters from Mudjimba to North Shore with pippies and worms the best baits. There’s tailor on pillies, especially if taken right on dark at Pincushion. OFFSHORE: Grassy sweetlip, cod and moses perch are being taken from The Gneerings and Coolum using squid and mullet fillet. The spotted mackerel season has begun, but they are hard to find and can be a challenge, so try everything in your arsenal, such as lures and baits. Bait schools are hard to locate. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam is returning bass and golden perch on trolled deep divers and spinner baits, cast beside timber near the power lines. Lake Baroon is best for bass and spangled perch, especially around the ramps using floated baits and trolled deep diving lures.
