his edition is all about gratitude - being thankful for what we have rather than disappointed about what we lack. I‘m so appreciative of the honest and heartfelt responses we received from everyone involved in the cover story. In that spirit, I thought I should contribute my own list.

In 2014, I’m grateful for: 1. being blessed with two healthy and happy children who amaze me every day; 2. being able to go to my father’s 70th birthday in country NSW; 3. not turning the ignition key after putting petrol in a diesel car on the way back from Dad’s the following day; 4. having a wife who Googled the effects of turning on the ignition in a car with the wrong fuel; 5. being able to spend the Christmas break with all my family. I hope you also have plenty to be grateful for this year. This week there’s a stack of great reading including local news, entertainment, fashion, travel, a summer book guide, tips for perfect gifts, and plenty of properties. If you’d like to give any feedback on our stories drop me a line at roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and I look forward to talking with you again soon.

Attitude Gratitude At this time of year, attention usually turns to what we want for Christmas. My Weekly Preview has decided to turn that on its head and look at what we are thankful for in 2014.

Denise Morcombe Denise spent a considerable amount of time in a court room this year as her son Daniel’s killer was f nally tried and convicted. Despite that harrowing experience, she offers thanks for many things in 2014.

In her own words…

“Grateful the trial is over and our family was able to have that behind us. Grateful that Bradley got married in August this year and that Dean and Brad both have good jobs, are hard workers, have purchased their own homes and have good partners. Really happy that the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum has been recommended to be included in the national curriculum. Happy to have great staff working at the Daniel Morcombe Foundation off ce and wonderful volunteers to call on when we need assistance. Grateful for the public support this year for our family and the foundation. It is nice to f nally become a normal family without so much stress with the trial, and that our family has all stuck together, and the continued support after nearly 11 years. I think I am a better person than I was before Daniel went missing. There are so many good people out there, better than I ever imagined years ago. (We) always get up each day with something to look forward to, we can never change the past, but can try and help someone each day.

T

he genesis of this story comes from a conversation I had with a good friend a couple of months back when he told me about his morning meditation at Mount Coolum. It went something like this: “I was sitting looking out at the ocean trying to see some whales. I was getting increasingly agitated as each minute passed, upset because I couldn’t see any. Five, ten minutes passed and I was getting cranky and out of sorts. It was then that it hit me. Here I am on this majestic rock, on a clear spring day, looking at the ocean in all its beauty and all I could think about was what I couldn’t see. I changed my attitude to one of gratitude for what was before me and my whole mood changed. Suddenly I was appreciating the day for what it was, rather than what I wished it was and that made all the difference.” It made me to start to think about what an interesting edition it would be if My Weekly Preview spoke with some people on the Sunshine Coast about what they have appreciated in 2014. The responses have been remarkable; some people have had a year so traumatic you are barely able to comprehend it, while others have witnessed great distress in the lives of their fellow Sunshine Coasters – and been there to give a helping hand. The one thing all these stories have in common is they make you think a little more about what you should be grateful for, and provide a timely reminder about how lucky most of us are.

Bruce and Denise Morcombe, Parliament House, Canberra

Itt is nice to finally become a normal family without so much stress with the trial riall We have a very busy schedule for 2015. Will continue doing schools visits and love seeing the kids sitting up and learning. Looking forward to a bigger Day for Daniel next year, looking forward to seeing if the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum goes national. Looking forward to working on new projects at the Foundation and seeing it grow more.” M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

I’m grateful for the fact my father gave me a good education and taught me good values, and they’ve stood me in good stead on a variety of fronts ever since

Mark Jamieson Professionally, it’s been a challenging year for the Mayor of the Sunshine Coast, but when you ask him what he’s grateful for he provides a very personal answer.

In his own words…

“The most important things you can have are the relationships with other people and that puts a real purpose into everything you do, and in the course of the year I lost my father. He passed away and the relationship we had was a strong relationship, the wider relationship with my family was strong and what I was grateful for was the way people took the time to express their condolences and their sympathy and at the same time express the things they love most about my father. I am grateful people take the time to share those types of poignant life moments.” My father was a tough taskmaster, who really himself, only understood his own family

Abdullah Mamun Seven years ago Abdullah said he had little to be grateful for in his country of origin Bangladesh, but since then he has moved to Australia, become a resident, started a family, opened a restaurant in Yandina, and this year in what he describes as one of the proudest achievements of his life, became an Australian citizen.

In his own words…

“I’m grateful because I get the chance to live here with all of my family. It’s a fantastic country to live. It’s a great honour and a great gift for me. Firstly, (I’m grateful because my kids) will always be healthy because of the atmosphere here, because of the climate here is so beautiful, a very green country. That’s the big difference. Bangladesh is too noisy, too crowded, too full of people, over-populated, too many natural disasters there right now, so that is completely different from Australia.

relationships in his later years; maybe being the father of seven, that’s one of the challenges I guess. I’m grateful for the fact my father gave me a good education and taught me good values, and they’ve stood me in good stead on a variety of fronts ever since. We do a lot of things as a means to an end but

I’m grateful because I get the chance to live here with all of my family. It’s a fantastic country to live. It’s a great honour and a great gift for me

the ends themselves, and personal relationships are at the heart of those ends. I think that’s what’s important to me, and different people use different pathways to get there, certainly I was very grateful for the kindness and condolences that people provided and the stories they related about my father.”

Secondly, lifestyle. Australia has a more secure lifestyle, and that’s partly about education. They (his two children) will get a better education here. They will be brought up how people are brought up here, which we believe is very nice way to grow up. As a father, every father has a dream about their children, to give them the best education, best place to live, so as a father I am very proud right now, because I give them a place where they can live and grow up more securely.” continued over>

Paul Bourke

We’ve got 60 volunteers who are vital to our operation, it’s one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve ever done

Paul who is the business manager of Suncoast Care, an organisation which provides discounted food to more than 18,000 people doing it tough on the Sunshine Coast, is grateful he is in a position to help others.

In his own words…

“I’m just very thankful that I’m part of a church that allows me the opportunity to be able to serve the community like I do, and one of the greatest rewards of that is seeing lives transformed, and changed and bettered. You have marginalised people and in a world where we have big business that monopolises and the f rst thing they do to cut costs is to cut people’s lives, the f rst cutback they do is cut jobs. I’ve had people come to me, they’ve worked all their lives, paid their taxes and earnt money and they own things and when you have economic issues, and you have job losses in particular, they don’t know which way to turn. And a lot of these people have never asked for help before so we treat people with dignity and respect. They comes to us and they’re able to obtain groceries at low prices and we also do free emergency relief. That just helps them get back on track again and we see a transition take place over a period of time. Sometimes it can be three

months, six months, it can be 12 months for some people to either get back in the workforce, or move from the area, or get back into study and improve their lives. But what we see is a thousand new families joining that need us per year, but we also see a thousand that don’t join because their lives have got back on track again. They’ve been able to build relationships and get accommodation and get work and it’s all about building community. We’ve got 60 volunteers who are vital to our operation, and we only have three paid staff, so with those volunteers it makes what we do possible. It’s a good organisation to be part of, Suncoast Care, and I’m just thankful to have the opportunity to serve there. It’s one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve ever done.”

W

hat are the chances of landing a job that receives thousands of applications every year? For John Gallina, it happened and it was the chance of a lifetime. Gallina, then a 28-year-old Telstra Communications Off cer, recalls the phone call he received one Thursday night in 1990. It was the f re chief from Brisbane and he said, “I’ve got some good news for you, son. You start with us on Monday. You will walk in a civilian and come out as a Queensland f ref ghter. Welcome to the f re service.” The former Padua College student had spent two years physically and mentally preparing for those words which changed his life, changed the lives of others and continues to impact Sunshine Coast residents 25 years later. He’s spent the past two decades climbing the f re service ranks, appointed Sunshine Coast Commander in 2009, before moving into his f nal role as acting chief

superintendent for the region. Today, Gallina is Sunshine Coast Council’s Disaster Management co-ordinator. When storms wreak havoc this summer, when f ood waters rise, when f res are out of control, or when major incidents occur, Gallina draws on his experience to co-ordinate the region’s emergency response. He works alongside the emergency services – f re, police, ambulance, the SES, the council and other agency staff, drawing on those decades of emergency work to keep us safe and to set us up for a quick recovery. This gentle giant has seen his share of emergency work. He’s attended more f res than he can count and more motor vehicle accidents than he wants to remember. “One second people’s lives are normal, and then in the blink of an eye, their lives have changed forever,” he says. “It makes you realise how fragile and precious life is.” It was a deployment to Cyclone Larry-ravaged Cairns in 2006 that gave him a taste of disaster

management and proved to be the turning point in his career. Three words have been drummed into him: command, control, co-ordination and after two decades, are now embedded in his DNA. It’s always about protecting life, minimising suffering and reducing further impact from events and to Gallina, going from f ghting f res to disaster management is not a giant leap– just a hop, skip and a jump. He credits his relationships with emergency service colleagues – the men and women he worked alongside, those who like him have lived and breathed emergency situations, as the reason he has handled the stress, the loss of life, the futility of death. “I really love my disaster management role with council and I probably have one of the best jobs in Queensland,” he says. “If I could have planned out a career, I could not have invented a better job to take on after the f re service. Understanding the fragility of life,

Gallina once f ew tolLondon d to meet an old ld friend for coffee. “I returned to London a few months later for another coffee – the f rst trip obviously went well,” he laughs. Gallina and his now-f ancee, Fiona, have created a new life here on the Sunshine Coast, a relationship he describes as “blissful” and one which he cherishes. To relax, he regularly torments his guitar: “I love picking up the guitar at night as it’s a great way to wind down and relax.” And his favourite song? James Taylor’s Fire and Rain. Of course it is.

One second people’s lives are normal, and then in the blink of an eye, their lives have changed forever

One-stop shop during disasters

Date set – Mayor to run Voters will go to the polls to elect a new council on Saturday March 19, 2016 – and the Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says he expects to be a candidate. “I set myself goals to achieve and we’ve done a good job in achieving those, but there’s still some to be f nalised,” he says. “At this stage I’ll certainly be running again.” “My hope is that it [the election date] doesn’t distract people, it’s a bit early to be campaigning for the election in my view.”

It’s now easier to prepare for severe weather events and other disasters, and stay up to date with the latest information. Sunshine Coast Council’s new Disaster Hub has weather warnings, road closures and evacuation centres on one easy-to-use site. It also links to airport updates, traff c cameras, f ood mapping and the council’s news updates and social media. Go to disaster.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. The Sunshine Coast Council’s Disaster Management co-ordinator

John Gallina says it provides a one-stop shop during disasters. “It’s all about building capabilities and capacity at every level,” he says. A new smartphone app dedicated to guiding businesses before, during and after a crisis is also available. The free Ready, Set Go! app works off ine and will help you get back to business sooner. Investing just one hour in the app could save your business thousands of dollars. It’s available on Apple and Android devices.

Noosa gets loan extension Noosa Council has been given an extension to pay back what it has drawn down of its $12 million line of credit to the Queensland Treasury Corporation. It was supposed to meet the debt by December 31, but Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli has given a six-month extension. “We received a request from

one of the [recently deamalgamated] councils about an extension of time to reduce their monthly repayments,” he says. “I didn’t want to make a special case, so I gave the option for all.” Noosa Mayor Noel Playford won’t be drawn on whether or not the extension raises questions about the new council’s f nancial viability. But he does say the

decision to award just $1.6 million of the $22 million Noosa Council had sought as part of the de-amalgamation settlement won’t affect its long-term future. “We hadn’t included any of the disputed funds in our f nancial statements or our budget so the result will have no impact on our strong f nancial position,” he says.

Summer reading guide Nothing beats relaxing at the beach or by the pool with a good book. Here are f ve pageturners to toss into your beach bag. Selections courtesy Better Reading - betterreading.com.au

1. The Long Haul by Jeff Kinney kids book (Penguin) Greg Heff ey and his family hit the road in the latest instalment of the phenomenal bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

1. Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan (Random House Aust)

A novel about the cruelty of war, and tenuousness of life and the impossibility of love. August, 1943. In the despair of a Japanese POW camp on the Thai-Burma death railway, Australian surgeon Dorrigo Evans is haunted by his love affair with his uncle’s young wife two years earlier. Struggling to save the men under his command from starvation, from cholera, from beatings, he receives a letter that will change his life forever. Winner of the 2014 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.

2. The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion

3. Holidays by William McInnes

4. Gallipoli by Peter FitzSimons

5. The Burning Room by Michael Connelly

The sequel to the international publishing phenomenon, The Rosie Project. ‘We’ve got something to celebrate,’ Rosie said. ‘I am not fond of surprises, especially if they disrupt plans already in place. I assumed that she had achieved some important milestone with her thesis. Or perhaps she had been offered a place in the psychiatry-training programme. This would be extremely good news, and I estimated the probability of sex at greater than 80 per cent. ‘We’re pregnant,’ she said. The romantic comedy of the year.

A book about the Australian love affair with holidays. Holidays is about the relaxing times you had as a kid, escapes you have with your children and the stories you hear from your friends. It can be about a romantic sunset or a miraculous airline upgrade. But most of all it’s about being in your backyard in an aboveground pool, f oating in circles, staring at the clouds as you go round and round, and knowing as you f oat that life is sweet because you’re on holidays.

The iconic tale of Gallipoli from Australia’s best-selling writer of non-f ction. On April 25, 1915, Allied forces landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in present-day Turkey to secure the sea route between Britain and France in the west and Russia in the east. After eight months of terrible f ghting, they would fail. Peter FitzSimons, with his trademark vibrancy and expert melding of writing and research, recreates the disaster as experienced by those who endured it or perished in the attempt.

Detective Harry Bosch and his new partner investigate a recent murder where the trigger was pulled years earlier. Not many murder victims die a decade after the crime. So when Orlando Merced f nally succumbs to complications from being shot ten years earlier, Bosch catches a case in which the body is still fresh, but any other evidence is virtually nonexistent. Bosch begins to see political dimensions to the case. Despite the seemingly impossible odds, failure to f nd the killer is not an option.

< View on Oslo Fjord harbour and Akershus Fortress, Oslo, Norway

Oslo and steady It’s not the cheapest European destination but if you’re in Norway, its capital is worth a visit. AAP

N

orway’s capital Oslo mightn’t have the hip factor of trendy Trondheim or the appeal of historic Bergen, but it’s a lovely place to spend a few days. You’ll f nd a quirky, multicultural city with a picturesque harbour and public art in every corner. But be warned – travelling in Oslo, regularly rated as one of the most expensive cities in the world, isn’t cheap. Two blue cheese hamburgers and

a couple of beers at Egon (a ubiquitous and – by Norwegian standards – relatively affordable restaurant chain) came to $98. However, it is possible to get good last-minute hotel deals online, where hearty breakfast buffets are included, and there’s plenty of bread and cheese in the supermarket for a cheap lunch. The most economical way to see the sights of Oslo is to get an Oslo Pass. A two-day pass costs about

$71 per adult and will get you in to all the main museums and attractions, plus entitle you to use buses, trams, trains, metro and ferries. One-day and three-day passes are also available. Here are four things to do if you go:

SEE THE SCREAM Oslo was the home of the famous expressionist painter Edvard Munch, whose iconic painting of a screaming man on a wharf has inspired a million

fridge magnets and coffee cups in souvenir shops throughout Norway. You can see the real thing in Oslo. Munch actually created four versions of the work between 1893 and 1910 and three of them are held in Oslo – one in the National Gallery and two in the Munch Museum. Be prepared to go through a metal detector if you enter the Munch Museum – armed robbers made off with The Scream and another Munch masterpiece, Madonna, in a brazen daylight robbery in 2004. The paintings were recovered, but the museum isn’t taking any chances. Munch is buried in Oslo and you can visit his grave in the beautiful Vår Frelsers Gravlund, as well as that of Norway’s most famous playwright Henrik Ibsen.

TAKE A FERRY & DISCOVER YOUR INNER VIKING Norway was home to a thriving Viking culture from the late eighth to late 11th centuries and a visit to Oslo is a good opportunity to learn more about this seafaring warrior culture. The Viking Ship Museum is

located on the Bygdoy peninsula on Oslo’s western side, accessible via a short, pleasant ferry trip from Oslo Harbour. It contains the world’s three best-preserved wooden longships, as well as numerous artefacts and three Viking skeletons. It’s also worth stopping in at the Kon-Tiki museum, which holds the original hand-built raft from Thor Heyerdahl’s 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition across the Pacif c Ocean. At the Fram Museum, you can learn the fascinating story of Norwegian polar exploration and see the original Fram ship that took explorers to both ends of the earth.

PEOPLE-WATCH ON KARL JOHANNS GATE It’s easy to while away an afternoon in Oslo’s cruisy, cobbled main drag Karl Johans gate, which contains a host of cafes, restaurants, designer stores and hotels, as well as a daily parade of local colour. By night it’s buzzing with jazz clubs and discos. The street runs all the way from Central Station to the Royal Palace. It’s closed for pedestrians only in some parts and serves as a convenient

landmark for navigating your way around the city. Sights along Karl Johans gate include the Parliament Building, the National Theatre and the historic Grand Hotel, which each year hosts the Nobel Peace Prize banquet.

Does your current f nancial adviser give your SMSF an obligation-free health check?

VISIT OSLO REPTILE PARK Part of the fun of travelling is stumbling across the unexpected. Meeting a blue-tongued lizard after travelling 16,000 kilometres around the globe isn’t expected. But that’s what can happen at the Oslo Reptile Park. The park is a small funky-smelling building in the city centre, housing an astonishing array of critters including boa constrictors, giant bird-eating spiders, poisonous frogs and a crocodile. If you are there at feeding time you could see a boa slowly swallow a whole rabbit. Many of the reptiles are rescued from illegal captivity. So if you visit the Reptile Park, you’re helping pay for the care of animals which may otherwise have been destroyed. For more information on Oslo go to visitnorway.com.

Self Managed Superannuation Funds You’ll f nd there’s a lot of things that Ord Minnett Buderim does that your ordinary f nancial adviser doesn’t. One of our SMSF specialists can review your fund for performance, fees and strategy to assess if you are getting the most from your current set up - or if your fund needs some intensive care. Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Pets of the Week

Top 7 tips to help your pet cope with summer 1. Walk your pet in the early morning or evening when it’s cooler. 2. Make sure all of your pets have cool and shady areas to go to, or if they are in cages make sure they are not in direct sunlight.

Zabu female domestic shorthair, 8 years What I love to do most is: have a peaceful nap in a sunny spot. Why I want to be a part of your home: I was dumped in my cat carrier at the refuge during the early morning, so I am looking forward to a more loving home. What you should know about me: I am a female domestic shorthair cat, aged eight years. My coat is a gleaming black, and I am a very pretty girl. I need a new owner who will care for me for the rest of my life and let me be a bit spoiled. I am desexed, vaccinated and microchipped.

3. Make sure your pet has access to plenty of cool water. Provide several water containers in case one is spilt. 4. Don’t leave your pet in a car on a hot day, even if the windows are down. 5. If possible, when it gets really hot bring your small animals inside; rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, kittens and puppies. 6. The next best option is to drape their cage with wet towels and provide frozen water.

Widget female Staffy cross, 15 months What I love to do most is: go for daily walks and then be your lap dog. Why I want to be a part of your home: because I came from the pound and now I am living in the refuge. I would adore a ‘forever’ home of my own, and to have people to love me. What you should know about me: I am a wonderful natured female staffy cross. I am OK with most other dogs and am longing to be a part of your family and to be included in your life. Desexed, microchipped and vaccinated.

SCARS is at capacity with more than 60 dogs and 40 cats in the shelter. Unfortunately dog adoptions have been slow for a few months. Please consider adopting a dog or cat or two and save a life by creating space for an animal waiting to come in. Donations of kitten and puppy food is appreciated.

7. If y our a nimal i s i n d iscomfort, w et its feet and spray water mist onto its face. Don’t saturate a bird’s feathers as this sends them into shock.

Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge is non-profit, non-euthanising and has been rescuing animals for more than 35 years. Find out how to adopt a pet or make a donation at sippycreek.com.au or facebook.com/sunshinecoastanimalrefuge, or visit the refuge at 28 Sippy Creek Road, Tanawha.

ustralian Gross Domestic Product in the September quarter fell materially short of consensus expectations, with annual growth of 2.7 per cent. Furthermore, the composition of growth was poor, with income in retreat, mining construction activity in deep decline, disappointing consumption growth, contracting housing construction, and falls in domestic demand in all mainland states except NSW. This opens up the possibility of the Reserve Bank cutting the cash rate after a long period of no change. Indeed, markets seem to be positioning for this outcome with the Commonwealth three-year bond

The case for additional easing by the RBA rests on several points: • the inf ation outlook is benign; • unemployment rate is forecast to continue increasing; • GDP growth slows further into the new year; • mining investment continues to contract sharply through 2015; • the housing market could slow with the introduction of restrictions on foreign ownership; • a looming drought in 2015; and • f scal policy will continue to weigh on economic activity in 2015 and 2016. This reinforces the relative attraction of higher-yielding investments, including equities, for investors seeking regular income. This is evident in sector performances this year, with higher-yielding areas of the market such as property trusts, telcos,

utilities and banks well supported. With the prospect of a subdued rate environment, this theme is likely to continue to be well-supported. Monetary policy does not work in isolation from the currency, so the prospect of further weakness in the Australian dollar, especially against the American dollar, is prominent. The RBA governor said as much in the last RBA Board meeting announcement, reintroducing the line from earlier in the cycle that “a lower exchange rate is likely to be needed to achieve balanced growth”. Once again we aff rm our preference for stocks with a material element of non-Australian dollar earnings. While always important it will be critical to regularly reassess your investment strategy in 2015 given the domestic economic outlook. WOODFORD FOLK FESTIVAL PUPPETS, PERFORMERS AND PASSION The countdown is on to the largest gathering of artists and performers in Australia – the Woodford Folk Festival. This year a giant five-metre puppet will be the star of the opening ceremony. It will be the largest puppet Woodford has ever created and it will come to life under the guidance of internationally acclaimed Irish artist Noelene Kavanagh – with the help of 30 students and volunteers. Woodford Folk Festival has been running for 29 years and the 2014/15 event will include over 2,500 artists, presenters and performers bringing their passions to the stage. The Violent Femmes (USA), The Cat Empire, Bertie Blackman, Kate MillerHeidke and Mia Dyson will be among the musical acts featured this year. In between the music, festivalgoers will have the chance to attend workshops on everything from belly dancing and yoga – to henna art and pottery. As always, there’ll be a range of speakers presenting on environmental and social issues – as well as health and wellbeing topics and a kids’ festival. Woodford Folk Festival runs from December 27 to January 1. For more information visit woodfordfolkfestival.com.

Kickstart your Christmas with this local brew TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe from 92.7 MIX FM’S Todd and Sami gives his opinion on the best brews of the week. Without doubt, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Granted, the wheel was a pretty solid invention too, but it does not go nearly as well with chips and cricket. These Christmas holidays, I’ll be spending plenty of time with my family in the great outdoors, meaning I’ll be sitting on the back patio drinking beers and scoff ng Toblerone while the kids run around under the sprinklers.

4 SUNSHINE COAST BREWERY SUMMER ALE Available at Cellarbrations Brightwater and Cellarbrations Wises Road, Buderim.

My wife is dreaming of a white Christmas – of course, when the white runs out she’ll drink the red. It truly is that awesome time of year where most people are excited for holidays – Christmas, prawns, the beach, f reworks, new thongs, the Boxing Day Test, rumballs, pool noodle f ghts, mum’s trif e and, like a Peter Jackson movie, the list goes on for ever. Time to share my fave Chrissy joke. It’s Christmas Eve and three lads are killed in a train accident. They all arrive at the pearly gates ready to face St Peter. The f rst bloke strolls up and St Peter says, “To gain entry to Heaven you need to show me your Christmas spirit”. So the f rst bloke pulls out his car keys, jangles them and says, “Well St

Pete, these are like the Christmas bells.” St Peter lets the fella through. The second guy whips out his zippo lighter, ignites it and says, “Just like the Christmas candles.” He too is admitted. The third bloke whirls out a pair of lady’s undies. St Peter looks shocked and says: “How do they represent Christmas?”. The bloke replies, “Easy Pete, they’re Carol’s.” So as the silly season is upon us it’s my pleasure to bring you a brew that is made here in our own backyard and is the tastiest midstrength on the market. The Sunshine Coast Brewery has been making tasty beer for more than 15 years and none more impressive than their Summer Ale. This little beauty is everything Sunny Coast, with a distinctive fruity

aroma that teams with a subtle bitterness and a hoppy f nish that more than satisf es. Unlike most mid-strength beers this ale is a full-bodied, full-f avoured little ripper and is truly the ultimate sessional brew for summer. One sip of this ace craft beer my friends, and I guarantee you’ll be all over the SCB Summer Ale like urine on Greg Bird’s wedding shoes. Again it’s hard to believe from the taste that this baby is only 3.5 per cent so it’s perfect for our long summer days and if you wanna really impress, I’d leave a couple out for Santa on December 24. As a Coast brew, I’m proud as punch to give the Sunshine Coast Brewery Summer Ale a red-hot 4 out of 5 thumbs up.

fitness tip If you’re working out in the gym but find you’re not losing weight, maybe your workout’s getting stale. Machine weights are designed to target specific muscles and not necessarily reduce weight, so get off the machines and add variety to your workout to stretch and challenge your body in new ways. Oh and check your diet – often that stubborn weight shifts once you reduce processed carbs, sugars and alcohol.

Thanks Jamie! An evaluation of a Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food Australia program held in Ipswich has found that it works. The 10-week program aims to encourage people to develop cooking skills to prepare simple, fresh and healthy food. A team from Deakin University and the University of Melbourne interviewed 250 participants before and six months after the course and compared their responses with the eating habits of people on the waiting list. The researchers found that over time the participants had decreased their spend on takeaway food and increased their spend on fruits and vegetables. AAP

Want to save money on hair foils? Do you foil? Becky B says some hairdressers are telling clients they must have a full head of foils at every appointment. “This is not necessary at all,” says Becky. “Try a half a head most appointments, alternate in a t-section (hair line and part line) and get your full head just a few times a year. It saves money and makes it possible to make more regular visits to the salon. Keep it simple, save time and money and stay looking fresh! For more f nd Becky at Becky B Hair and Beauty in Caloundra

Eco cars have arrived

A

ustralian motorists looking for energy-efficient vehicles have more options after the arrival of two eco-friendly vehicles. Hyundai has shown off the f rst hydrogen-powered, zero-emissions car to be permanently imported into the country, while Tesla has established a retail presence for its electric vehicles. The Korean-built Hyundai ix35 fuel cell is the f rst component of Hyundai’s plan to operate a test f eet

of ix35 fuel cell vehicles in Australia and represents a pioneering step toward the commercial availability of emissions-free hydrogen-powered vehicles in Australia. Hyundai Motor Company Australia CEO Charlie Kim says in 2013 Hyundai became the f rst car manufacturer in the world to start mass production of a hydrogenpowered vehicle. “This gave HMCA the ability to order a fuel-cell electric vehicle in the

same way as we order any other new Hyundai car,” Kim says. “Now we have one, and we believe this fantastic car will help demonstrate the potential of hydrogen as a green transport solution for Australia.” Hyundai has started the installation of Australia’s only hydrogen refuelling station at its Sydney headquarters and expects it to be fully operational in early 2015. “Ultimately, we see no reason why Australians should not enjoy the same environmental solutions as consumers in other markets,” Kim says. “Hyundai strongly supports the idea of a hydrogen highway in Australia like those already in operation overseas and we are committed to working with local partners to facilitate this.” Last week Tesla Motors delivered nine new cars to Sydney customers, marking the arrival of the Model S in Australia. Tesla also off cially launched its retail presence in Australia, opening the doors at the country’s f rst store and service centre in Sydney. By the end of 2015, customers will be able

to visit Tesla stores and service centres in Sydney and Melbourne and Model S test-drive events will be held around the country. The Model S delivers 502 kilometres of range on a single charge.

At a glance

Hyundai ix35 fuel cell Runs on hydrogen and emits only water vapour from its exhaust pipe. Meets the world’s most stringent vehicle safety standards. Accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 12.5 seconds. Maximum speed is 160km/h. Develops 100kW of power and 300Nm of torque with an off cial maximum range of 594 kilometres. Takes between three and seven minutes to ref ll. Tesla Model S Electric vehicle that has a range of 502 kilometres on a single charge. Accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 3.4 seconds. Takes about 20 minutes to replenish half of the 502 kilometre range.

The holiday highway: Stay safe over Christmas

C

hristmas is the busiest time of year on the roads with tens of thousands of Australians hitting the highway over the holiday period. Unfortunately, the increase in traffic also leads to a number of fatalities each year. The RACQ is urging Australians to play it safe on the roads over Christmas. Spokesperson Lauren Ritchie says distraction, drink and drug driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, fatigue and speeding are the main causes of road crashes. “It’s important to keep distractions in mind, whether it’s a mobile phone or GPS system,” she says. Ritchie says driver exhaustion is another factor – contributing to more than 20 per cent of road deaths and making it a key factor to the state’s road toll alongside drink driving and speeding. “It’s important a driver has had adequate sleep. RACQ recommends switching drivers

every two hours, or pulling over.” Although the Queensland road toll is at a record low this year, Ritchie says it is still important for motorists to follow road rules and drive to the conditions.

HOW TO AVOID BECOMING A STATISTIC: TAKE A BREAK Many Australians travel great distances over the Christmas period to see friends and family. Always remember to stop, revive and survive. There are a number of rest stations along main highways where you can take a power nap and stretch your legs. Fatigue accounts for 20 per cent of road fatalities in Australia. The RACQ recommends you stop for a break every two hours. DON’T GET DISTRACTED It is illegal in all Australian states and territories to use a handheld mobile phone while driving but

despite this about 25 per cent of Queenslanders admit to using their phone on the road. When drivers become distracted – either by answering the phone or trying to deal with a child in the backseat – they are at greater risk of becoming involved in an accident. Always remain focused on the road when you are driving – even if that means ignoring your incoming calls. AVOID DRINK AND DRUGS The off ce Christmas party, the family gathering on Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve – there are many reasons to have a celebratory beverage over the silly season but getting behind the wheel while under the inf uence is a very bad idea. It’s important to remember your driving ability is not only inf uenced by alcohol and illicit substances but also over-thecounter medications which can cause drowsiness and slow down your ref exes.

BUCKLE UP Despite seatbelts being a legal requirement for car occupants in Australia there are still a number of fatalities and injuries each year that could have been avoided if a seatbelt was worn. Always check that children are buckled up before setting off on a road trip and remember to keep yourself strapped in, even on quiet country roads. SLOW DOWN Speed is a major cause of road accidents in Australia. Remember to take extra care when accelerating to overtake a vehicle and always drive according to the weather conditions.

Humble home He’s one of the world’s wealthiest and most inf uential people, but Warren Buffett’s taste in housing is anything but extravagant. The notable philanthropist has lived in the same house for decades – he bought the home, in Omaha, Nebraska, for $31,500 back in 1958.

What is it about red front doors that some home owners just love? For feng shui enthusiasts, a red front door creates a welcome energy. The colour is a good sign for Scottish home owners – they would paint their front doors red to show they have paid off the mortgage.

Of the nation’s household debt is housing debt. (ABS DATA FROM THE END OF 2013)

Pricey pad Generally recognised as the world’s most expensive home, Mumbai’s Antilia doesn’t look like a house at all. At 27 storeys, it accommodates six underground parking f oors and three helicopter pads and is valued at $1.2 billion.

How much?

Clear the air They say that earthquakes don’t kill people – it’s falling buildings that are the danger. With this in mind, Japanese company Air Danshin has invented the Shoichi Sakamoto, a house that sits on a def ated air bag. Sensors in the product detect tremors and inf ate the airbag in seconds, lifting the home about three centimetres off its foundations. Once the danger has passed the bag def ates, gently lowering the home.

Facts and stats from around the globe and close to home.

Sunshine Coast facts According to the Sunshine Coast Council, the estimated resident population of the region in 2013 was 278,202 with a density of 1.21 people per hectare. Melbourne’s population density is 24.26 people per hectare, while London houses 52 people per hectare.

At 829.8 metres and 160 storeys high, the world’s tallest existing building is Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. It is reportedly so tall that those on the top f oor see the sun set two minutes after those watching from the ground f oor.

Interest rates According the Australian Bureau of Statistics, between June 1989 and March 1990, the interest charged by the large banks averaged 17 per cent per annum on a standard variable owner-occupied home loan. In 2014, large banks were charging an average of six per cent per annum of these loans.

Mining magnates Chris and Tia Ellison paid $57.5 million for Australia’s most expensive house in Perth’s Mosman Park back in 2009. This year the couple extended the family compound by spending $6.6 million in May to buy a neighbouring property, then bought another neighbouring home in August for $5 million. The acquisitions bring the land holding to 9,159 square metres.

State of the nation CoreLogic RP Data’s October 2014 quarterly review throws up some interesting facts, including: • The total value of residential property in Australia was $5.6 trillion at the end of October. • The total value of mortgages outstanding to the country’s lenders at the end of September was $1.4 trillion. • In the 12 months to August 2014 there were 349,612 houses and 135,914 units transacted in Australia. • For 29 months, capital city values have been increasing and over that time have risen by 20 per cent.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] This week your intense, impulsive and impetuous side is likely to go into overdrive, as you long to step in and take charge of festive proceedings. But perhaps it would be smarter to slow down and delegate? Strive to be a gentle lamb this Christmas season.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Taureans are in a festive mood, as you enjoy the Yuletide revelry. A streamlined approach is the key to successful preparations. But, if you eat and drink too much on Christmas Day, you’ll be a grumpy bull on Boxing Day! Simple is the smart way to go on the weekend.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Gung-ho Gemini – are you mega-stressed and super busy? Slow down, and work your way through your to-do list, one step at a time. A truck-load of tact is required on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, otherwise you could ďŹ nd in the middle of a feisty family feud.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] There’s no getting away from intense family relationships this week, as clannish crabs are the keepers of the family ame. But don’t think that you can handle everything on your own. Cooperation is the secret to a successful Christmas.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Party-loving lions love the colourful drama of Yuletide celebrations. Even though it’s the height of the festive season, strive to make your food choices as healthy as possible. 2015 will be a bumper year, and cats need to be in tip-top shape.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Christmas looks somewhat stressful. It will be very easy to feel unsettled and obsess over small details and minor matters. So heed the wise words of Quentin Crisp “Treat all disasters as if they were trivialities, but never treat a triviality as if it were a disaster.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Many Librans will host Christmas celebrations at home this year but communication between guests looks somewhat chaotic, as Uranus and Pluto stir up drama in your domestic zone. When in doubt take ten long deep breaths, then keep calm and carry on!

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Avoid getting too intense, serious and stressed. A cool and methodical approach is the best way to handle the ongoing Christmas celebrations. And you’ll need to be extra diplomatic if you want to avoid a fraction too much friction with family members.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Expect a momentous Christmas week, as Saturn shifts into Sagittarius (for the ďŹ rst time since 1988). So it’s the perfect time to give your new serious persona a trial with discerning relatives. Avoid being impatient and superďŹ cial when communicating with loved ones.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] With the Sun, moon, Mercury, Venus and Pluto all moving through your sign, it’s up to you to handle Christmas celebrations with stacks of cool Capricorn style and composure. Be smart (and brave) enough to rise above silly family squabbles!

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Adventurous Aquarians are in the mood for plenty of Yuletide cheer and holiday hijinks! You’re in festive spirits as Uranus revs up your restless side and lowers your tolerance levels. Issues from the past (and erratic thoughts) could also cloud your judgment this week.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Have you left most of your Christmas shopping to the last minute ‌ again? If you make a list and pace yourself, then you’ll get the gifts you need without too many problems Pisces. Look for creative presents that stimulate the imagination.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

Well there certainly has been some fun swell about but given everyone has been starved of waves for months on end it’s getting a bit crazy. So chill out and don’t be greedy or get angry. Remember Santa is watching! Everyone deserves a few waves. If you are that desperate get your sorry butt out of bed at 4am and you should score some uncrowded sessions. But a word of advice - the old crew at Moffats either don’t go to bed at night or have had an accident in their PJs because they are out there most mornings at 4.30. Anyway, make the effort and be cool. There is no point being that guy in the water. Everyone knows one and if you don’t there is a good chance it is you!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Quality whiting are taking yabbies and worms opposite Bli Bli oyster banks on the rising tide with the bigger tides this week to suit better. You can get Trevally and flathead on plastic lures at the mouths of Petrie and Eudlo Creeks. Mud crabs are on the move throughout all river systems due to the recent rains. SURF: There are bream at Mudjimba on the night high tides using mullet fillet, and flathead in the low tide gutters during the day. There’s whiting along Maroochy Beach with pippies best. You can get some tailor at Pincushion, with better quality just after dark using WA pillies. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, mackerel on trolled lures at The Gneerings and Caloundra, where bait can be found. Most reef areas are returning squire, sweetlip and parrot with the technique of jigging big plastic baits returning bigger fish. FRESHWATER: One of the best starts to the bass season with lures trolled along the weed line in almost any impoundment returning fish. Somerset has golden and silver perch with baits and lures working. Fly fishers are enjoying bass and togas up in Borumba Dam with visitors enjoying the scenery as this dam has high water levels.
