Who could have imagined just how beautiful it would become. Only a few months back, we released our Savannah and Trinity Precincts, today both Savanah and Trinity precincts are very nearly sold out. In fact, families are already moving into their newly completed homes within Savannah and what a fabulous array of homes they have built. It’s truly inspirational to see the designs that have emerged along the lakefront and beside the parks. Another small army of builders and landscapers are now adding the finishing touches to Sunshine Cove’s
one hectare lakefront lifestyle reserve, Wises Park. Complete with state of the art playground equipment that interact with smart phones, covered picnic shelters, BBQ’s, car-parking and toilet facilities, Wises Park has been designed to make the most of its picturesque, lake front location. Expansive grassed areas have been set aside for ‘fun stuff’ like running around madly kicking footballs, however this parkland also includes an amphitheater for community events. We’ve planted over 170 large trees to provide further shady areas. And the good news is that Wises Park will be open just in time for the Christmas holidays.
Early 2015 will see our attention focus across the lake with the release of Mackenzie. Featuring stunning north facing, direct waterfront allotments this precinct will offer an even greater mix of terrace, laneway and park front residential allotments. After the success of the Savannah and Trinity Precinct (98% sold off the plan) we expect Mackenzie to arouse a lot of attention. The completion of the the Flinders Precinct sees a new and very innovative product emerge within Sunshine Cove. A terrace site that includes potential for commercial component. Perfect for an investor or small business owner Flinder’s lots offer freehold title.
Average Waterfront/Waterview $299,000. Average Dry/Park $215,000. Average House and Land $585,000. Prices are subject to availability and are subject to change without notice.

appy New Year and I hope you’ve enjoyed a good break. We went camping, which meant swimming in the sea, sweating under the marquee, and sleeping with plenty of sand in the camper trailer. We made some new friends, discovered interesting places, and hopefully created some lasting memories for the
boys - but it’s good to be back. Controversial writer Warren Ellis said, “I try not to get involved in the business of prediction. It’s a quick way to look like an idiot.” At the risk of doing just that, My Weekly Preview has dug out its dusty crystal ball from the back of the cupboard to give you an insight on what to expect in 2015. There’s fearless prognostications on the state election, major projects on the Coast and even the weather. Once you know what is going to happen over the next 12 months, sit back, relax and enjoy some summer reading. You’ll meet the surgeon from the Sunshine Coast who is winning writing awards when she’s not saving lives, Todd is talking beer, and then we are off to the races. If your New Year’s resolution is to buy a house – make sure you take a look at our property cover story, which takes you through the process, step by step. I look forward to talking with you again next week.

Five Sunshine Coast thought leaders give My Weekly Preview their predictions for the coming year on the key issues affecting our region: the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion, the State election, the Maroochydore CBD upgrade, tourism and of course, the weather. By Candice Holznagel
L
ife would be a little easier if we could look into a crystal ball and see what lay ahead. What are the winning numbers in Saturday’s Gold Lotto draw (a girl can dream, right)? When will my child start sleeping through the night (please let it be soon)? Yes, knowing the answer to some of life’s pressing questions would be helpful. Unfortunately, at this point in time there is still no scientific evidence to back up psychic claims, so for now I will continue to cross my fingers as I buy that weekly lotto ticket. While life is a bit of a gamble and predicting future events is a diff cult task, there are some predictions we can make based on an educated guess. With this in mind, and the new year upon us, My Weekly Preview invited f ve of the Coast’s key players to crystal ball gaze on the big issues affecting the region in 2015.

Funding for the redevelopment of the Sunshine Coast Airport will be resolved “in the not-toodistant future”
T
he $350 million expansion of the Sunshine Coast Council owned and operated airport has been on the table for a number of years. With plans for the new 2450-metre runway to be operational by 2020, the council and interested parties have only five short years to see
the project come to fruition. The big question on everyone’s lips is how will the project be funded? According to Mayor Jamieson, we won’t have to wait much longer for the answer now that community submissions for the Environmental Impact Statement have closed. “We are awaiting the determination of the Coordinator General who is responsible for running that EIS,’’ he says. “We are sitting tight… we are conf dent various approvals will be agreed upon and then move into the stage of f nalising the funding and committing to construction. “The options are assistance from
the Federal Government, direct funding from the private sector or self funding. It will be resolved in the not-too-distant future. We are busy ensuring various parties are aware of the investment opportunities. “Obviously we are seeking to engage with every possible option and as I said, make sure we get the best outcome for ratepayers in terms of value for the asset, but particularly we’ve got to get the airport completed.’’ Jamieson says the airport will bring enormous prosperity with greater transport connectivity, tourism spin-offs and employment opportunities.

Closer to home and things look a little more promising for the incumbent LNP. Stevens believes voters will keep LNP members in the seats of Kawana, Caloundra and Maroochydore while the ever-popular Independent Peter Wellington will retain his position in Nicklin. he says with a few weeks to go in the And the man of the hour who continues to make election campaign it’s too early to call a headlines right across the nation? winner, but Stevens doesn’t need a “We should address the issues of the Palmer United crystal ball to know there will be more Labor Party,’’ Stevens says. members back in parliament following the “He’s still polling more in Queensland and WA, but January 31 state election. pulled a low vote in the Victorian election. C
ommunity-minded Riba says there is little doubt the highly anticipated Maroochydore CBD development will be one of the biggest talking points on the Sunshine Coast in the coming 12 months. In mid2014 the 60-hectare site, comprising local and state
government-owned land including the former Horton Park Golf Club, reached a significant milestone with the State Government approving the project’s development scheme. To be developed over the next 25 years, the city centre will be a mix of residential, commercial, retail, civic and community facilities. Sunshine Coast Council is set to
scene. He is involved in proceedings which may affect the cause of his party. “The issue for the Coast and the issue at the election is to see how much of a vote they [PUP] get. If you vote one for Palmer United but don’t allocate a second preference, I would expect it would benef t Labor. But if they withdraw the vote from Labor… there are a lot of unknown issues.’’ Stevens says the Premier called the election because the opinion polls weren’t headed in the right direction – and talk of a June election made Newman “look desperate’’. “Across the state on the whole there is a sense of betrayal. Voters were furious with Anna Bligh that she didn’t announce she would have asset sales. Newman initially announced 14,000 jobs gone but it’s been a lot more than that. “Voters are feeling rather disillusioned with pollies.’’ As for whether Tony Abbott will hold on to his job, Stevens says only time will tell.
begin work on site this year. “We are looking at the design for the town centre and getting involved in that to make sure that some of what is incorporated in that, and what is important, is what the public wants,’’ Riba says. “I’m planning to meet with architects and others and get people’s thoughts. It’s a project that’s a long way away and involves a lot of planning. It’s a diff cult one for the chamber because we have to invest in it now but have no benef t for a long time.’’ Riba is calling on the council to factor in more community consultation and he urges residents to voice their opinions before it’s too late. “People have seen that [the project is] in the never never: ‘there’s no urgency to state my view’. But once the blueprint is put in place it’s harder to put in the changes of what the public wants.’’
We took a look inside our crystal ball and here are our top f ve predictions for the year ahead: 1. The LNP will win the state election at the end of the month (just) but the Premier will lose his seat; 2. The Coast’s retail sector and economy will continue to improve – especially once the election is over; 3. Work will start on the Sunshine Coast Council’s proposed Valdora solar farm facility; 4. Prince William and Princess Kate will welcome a baby girl; and 5. Queensland will regain supremacy and take home the State of Origin title.

redicting the weather is almost as difficult as predicting your future. Beautiful one day and stormy the next. Just ask Hannah McEwan, who spends her days deciphering Mother Nature. “It’s quite hard to get that 12 months outlook,’’ she explains. “Going on what we are expecting we will drift into El Nino – a period of low average rainfall and above average temps. “It is expected the El Nino conditions will last anywhere from nine months to two years. “Once we do drift into it, we will be in that threshold for a little while. Whether we drift out of it at the end of the year, middle of the year, we are unlikely to see a La Nina event. What we are likely to see is the kind of conditions we have been seeing, a lack of rainfall and hot conditions. “It is unlikely we will see the f ooding we did a couple of years ago. “Weather is so f ckle. It’s all based on what we’ve seen in the past and is only an estimation of what we can expect.’

Saving lives is all in a day’s work for Kellee Slater There are many reasons why people develop liver disease and require a transplant but Slater says hepatitis C, alcoholism and obesity are top on the list. Due to advances in technology, 95 per cent of patients who receive a liver transplant in Australia are likely to survive past their f rst year. Slater says that seeing a person pull through a transplant is one of the many rewarding aspects of her job as a Hepatobiliary, Pancreas and Liver Transplant Surgeon.
To see him walk into my off ce f ghting f t after everything he’d been through was a wonderful way to end my year
D
r Kellee Slater works with people who are days away from death. She describes her job as doing life-threatening things to high-risk patients that take many hours and involve copious amounts of bleeding. Born and raised on the Sunshine Coast, Slater is one of only two female liver transplant surgeons in Australia. Last year her book, How to do a liver transplant: Stories from my surgical life, which offers an insight into the high-pressure world of surgery, took out the Queensland Literary Awards People’s Choice award.
When asked about the challenges of her occupation, the mother of four says it’s often the things that go on outside of the operating room that cause her the most stress. “Surgery is something I do every day, so I’m used to that kind of pressure. It’s the unpredictability of my schedule that can be stressful – like when I have a head cold and full day of operations lined up but then there’s an emergency that comes through my door and I have to try to juggle everything,” Slater says. Each year there are about 40 liver transplants in Queensland.

“Late last year I had one of my former patients pop in to wish me a merry Christmas. He’s 56 years old and lives in Buderim and for most of last year he was critically ill in hospital. In fact, he was bedridden for 18 months with pancreatitis and had to undergo 30 operations. To see him walk into my off ce f ghting f t after everything he’d been through was a wonderful way to end my year,” Slater says. Slater works as part of the liver transplant team at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and also runs her own private practice at Greenslopes Private Hospital.
Fast facts: • The liver is a vital organ, performing complex biochemical process including detoxif cation, synthesis of protein and producing biochemicals necessary for digestion of food. • It is the largest internal gland in the body and the only one that can regenerate itself from as little as 25 per cent of its volume. • Six million Australians are, or have been, affected by liver, bile duct or gall bladder disease. • More than 7,000 Australians die each year from chronic liver diseases, cirrhosis and cancers of the liver, gall bladder and bile ducts. • An average of 250 livers are transplanted in Australia each year.

The long haul to save the loggerhead
H
undreds of passionate volunteers have been working around the clock on Sunshine Coast beaches to care for nesting loggerhead turtles. With only 500 nesting females remaining in eastern Australia, the loggerhead turtle is under serious threat and the Sunshine Coast population continues to be vital to the long-term survival of this species. The coastal strip between Point Cartwright
Election campaign begins
and Shelly Beach is a favourite spot for the turtles but volunteers, with the support of the Sunshine Coast Council and Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, have been monitoring turtles at various stretches along the Coast. One of the biggest threats to loggerheads at the egg and hatchling stages on Sunshine Coast beaches comes from the introduced European red fox and also from unrestrained dogs. To minimise this impact, volunteers have been covering turtle nests with a piece of construction mesh – which prevents foxes from accessing the nest but allows hatchlings to emerge naturally and unassisted. Volunteers have also been assisting with the relocation of nests that are deemed at imminent risk and with collecting data on the species. Anyone who sees a turtle nesting on the beach is advised to call TurtleCare on 0437 559 067. If you’re a dog owner, try to keep your pet on a leash and away from turtles.
The state election campaign is underway with Premier Campbell Newman calling a snap poll for January 31. Newman says he’s seeking a mandate for his plan to privatise the state’s port and power assets. “It’s become obvious to me we can’t waste any time implementing our strong plan for economic growth and job creation.” Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk is f ghting the election on the key issues of jobs and education. “We’ve got unemployment heading towards seven per cent and youth unemployment in our regional areas up to 20 per cent. This government has cut jobs, they’ve cut services and they’ve cut TAFE.” Palmer United’s state leader John BjelkePetersen says his party will f ght asset leases. “If people think we can do that [lease power assets] and get cheaper electricity, then they’ve got rocks in their heads.” The LNP is expected to retain its six seats on the Sunshine Coast and Independent Peter Wellington is tipped to retain Nicklin. The latest polls show support for Labor and the LNP is tied in Queensland.

ne of the most dangerous weather systems that affect Queensland in summer are tropical cyclones, however during the cooler months, an east coast low can cause just as much devastation and damage. Both an east coast low (ECL) and a tropical cyclone are intense areas of closed low pressure rotating in a clockwise direction, and look very similar on a weather chart; however there are many differences. A tropical cyclone typically lasts around a week and gets its energy from warm tropical waters, while an ECL tends to have a much shorter life cycle of just a few days and
Ord Minnett Buderim – Sunshine Coast
develops over cooler waters. An ECL develops within f ve degrees of the Australian coastline and can range in size from 10 kilometres to 1,000 kilometres. The intensity of an ECL is dependent on the temperature difference between the warmer air over the Tasman Sea, and cool air over land at high levels in the atmosphere. When there is a large difference, the winds are the strongest and the system can have the most impact. An ECL will often intensify overnight when the temperature difference is the greatest, making them dangerous. An ECL can produce destructive winds, heavy rain which can cause f ash f ooding and river f ooding and very large and dangerous seas. An ECL in October this year produced a wind gust more than 160 kilometres per hour, which is equivalent to a category 2 tropical cyclone. While an east coast low may never be as intense as a severe tropical cyclone, they often impact larger and more populated areas.

Patrick Maguire (L) and his brother Bruce sit a bottle of their award-winning Sullivan’s Cove whisky between them at their distillery in Cambridge on Hobart’s outskirts
WHISKY BUSINESS
T
ucked away between rolling hills dotted with sheep and winding roads bordering vineyards is a nondescript, white warehouse with small, square windows. The modest-looking building gives no hint about what lies within its walls, except for a small sign hanging on a fence – Sullivans Cove – signalling the home of the makers of the recently anointed world’s best single malt whisky. Made with barley and fresh water and matured in barrels in Tasmania, Sullivans Cove is among a new breed of whisky makers in the country’s smallest state that is making waves on the international stage. “It’s an old-fashioned style of whisky and I think when the judges tasted it, it appealed to them,” owner Patrick Maguire says about the 13-year-old single malt he and several colleagues distilled, which won the top accolade at the World Whisky Awards. “It’s got all the structure there, the mouth-f ll, the creaminess, all these things that aren’t in so many whiskies these days because they are mass-produced. “And that’s the difference I think.” Inf uential international whisky expert Jim Murray, who rates the Tasmanian tipples highly, has also praised the casks – all second-hand and previously used to keep other wines and spirits – as being key ingredients in their success.
AAP
It’s no secret Australia produces great wine and beer, but who knew we were making an international name for ourselves in the whisky game? By Glenda Kwek, AAP Scotland has long been known as the spiritual home of whisky, while Ireland, America, Canada, and more recently Japan are viewed as established markets. But while some may see Tasmania’s products as upstarts mingling with the old masters, Bill Lark – regarded as the grandfather of Australian whisky – says the southern state had a budding industry in the 1820s before more pressing concerns ended it. “Sydney was starving and they started sending messages to Hobart, saying, ‘We need your barley for food, stop using it for whisky, send it to Sydney’,” the 60-yearold said as he cradled a glass of single malt in his bar alongside Hobart’s harbour. “There was a lot of pressure borne on the governor of the day and in 1830 he agreed to raise the level of excise so high in Hobart that six of the seven distilleries closed.” The remaining producer brief y benef ted before the next governor John Franklin imposed a total ban on distillation in 1839. Fast-forward one-and-a-half centuries to 1992.
Lark and his wife Lyn were drinking whisky in the state’s highlands when they started to wonder why Tasmania did not make the spirit even though it had all the ingredients, including the peat f elds. The couple persuaded a local politician to help amend a 1901 law discouraging boutique breweries and bought a $65 still to make whisky in their home. Awards and international recognition followed, and two decades later Lark’s business has 18 staff and turns over millions of dollars each year. Dozens of other producers have popped up in Tasmania and on the Australian mainland and caught the attention of whisky critics and connoisseurs around the world. Maguire, 57, says early fans of Sullivans Cove whiskies were from France and the Netherlands before interest picked up in countries as far f ung as New Caledonia, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong and even Britain. Domestic consumption has also increased sharply, and the biggest challenge facing the producers now is not getting af cionados to drink their drams, but to meet the explosion in demand. Lark produces about 25,000 bottles a year, which he hopes to increase to 60,000 bottles in eight years. Sullivans Cove releases 18,000 bottles a year and runs such a tight operation that when its whisky was chosen as the world’s best, the distiller only had three bottles left from the winning French Oak barrel.
It’s got all the structure there, the mouth-f ll, the creaminess, all these things that aren’t in so many whiskies these days y because they are mass-produced ed British drinks giant Diageo – the world’s biggest producer – sells more than 120 million bottles of Scotch whisky Johnnie Walker each year. Lark and Maguire both believe moving towards a mass-produced product would compromise the hand-crafted nature of their whisky, which they say is essential to their brands.

> real-time bus info
Sunshine Coast passengers can track the next bus from the palm of their hand with the State Government’s rollout of real-time information. Acting Transport and Main Roads Minister Andrew Powell says the new technology is one of the biggest changes to public transport technology since smart card ticketing in 2008. Passengers can visit the TransLink website or the MyTransLink app to see when their bus is due to depart their stop,” Powell says. GPS technology shows up-to-the-minute departure times of exactly where the bus is, with information updated every 30 seconds or better. Assistant Minister for Public Transport Steve Minnikin says to coincide with the launch of the new technology, Translink has developed a new app, which can be downloaded free for iOS and Android. For more information about real-time or about the MyTransLink app, visit translink.com.au or call 13 12 30.

What’s in store for the Aussie dollar in 2015?
Justin Scattini is from Ord Minnett in Buderim
T
he 2014 year was an interesting one for the Australian dollar. For a start, the Australian versus American dollar exchange rate made a five-year low over the course of the year. It was the first year since 2009 that the local currency did not trade above parity for some portion of the year. The range for the Australian dollar US$0.95 to below US$0.82 was one of the smallest in recent years, but continues the pattern of lower highs and lower lows seen over the past three years. At the time of writing, the dollar is down 6.3 per cent for the calendar year.
When we look at episodes of multi-year declines in the Australian dollar over the past three decades, some interesting statistics emerge. Excluding the 2008 experience, we f nd that the average peak to trough decline is US$0.31, and the average duration of the decline is 52 months. On both of these measures, the current episode looks about 73 per cent complete (42 months in duration and a decline of around US$0.25 from the peak). When thinking about the Australian dollar in 2015 we should consider the macro-economic inf uences on local currency. • The outlook for the Australian economy and interest rates – The case for additional easing by the RBA rests on several points: the inf ation outlook is benign, unemployment is likely to increase, GDP growth is below trend, mining investment continues to contract, and f scal policy will continue to weigh on economic activity.
• The outlook for Chinese growth – This will be modestly bearish for the Australian dollar in 2015 as Chinese growth slows and becomes less investment-intensive. • Commodity prices – There is not much upside, but the divergence between the Australian dollar and commodity prices could persist. • The outlook for the global economy – Despite an improvement in headline measures, the outlook for Australia’s major trading partners is less impressive. When we consider some of the risks around the local currency’s outlook in the year ahead, the conclusion is that the balance of risks looks to be biased to the downside and investment portfolios should be positioned accordingly. Justin Scattini is an Authorised Representative (no 427053) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. He can be contacted on 07 5430 4444. GST exemption “not fair” to local retailers
Sunshine Coast retailers will be heartened by the news the Federal Government looks set to drop the GST exemption on online overseas sales of less than $1000. New assistant treasurer Josh Frydenberg says exempting overseas online retailers from the 10 per cent impost on goods and services is not fair to taxpayers, retailers and their employees. Between 2008-09 and 2010-11 the number of goods valued below $1000 increased by 58.2 per cent while the number of goods between $1000 and $5000 grew by only 18 per cent. The online GST threshold would be looked at in the government’s strategy review of the tax system. Frydenberg said the willingness of governments, federal and state, to deal with the issue was a test case for the nation’s ability to adapt to the growing digital economy. AAP

A ginger beer that packs a punch on a hot day Happy Brew Year people! High f ves all round – we’ve survived the Christmas and New Year’s party craziness and now a new chapter begins. Easter eggs are already appearing in amongst the back-toschool stuff and we all need new bank accounts ‘coz our current ones have run out of money, but on the whole life is good! Oh and my New Year’s resolution? I’ll probably keep it at 1280 x 1024 like always… maybe run a Lo Fi or Valencia f lter over it, thanks for asking. In I actual fact, my New Year’s resolution is to be more Yea optimistic by keeping my op ccup half full… with beer. As we venture forth

into 2015, here’s a little list of helpful things I’ve learnt over the last 12 months: 1. It sure pays to always keep a lazy half a carton in the fridge for special occasions. Sometimes the special occasion is that you’ve got a lazy half carton in the fridge. 2. The worst time to have a heart attack is during a family game of charades. 3. New Year’s appears to be the only time you can be covered in glitter and not be mistaken for a stripper. 4. The answer to the question “what’s black and white and eats like a horse?” is a zebra. 5. Men who have pierced ears are better prepared for marriage ‘coz they’ve experienced pain… and bought jewellery. 6. Bad decisions make good stories. 7. More people would read obituaries if they listed how the people died.
TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe from 92.7 MIX FM’S Todd and Sami gives his opinion on the best brews of the week. 8. You should never make eye contact while eating a banana. 9. Whenever you are upset and think things are bad, remember it could be worse… just imagine a T-Rex making a bed. 10. And f nally, one of the greatest things I’ve learnt is to always be yourself. Unless of course you can be Batman. Then, always be Batman. Solid. This week we’re road testing what I reckon is the most refreshing non-beer on the market. In a slightly different speed for us, it’s a pleasure to present to you the Brookvale Union Ginger Beer. The crew at Brookvale Union are purveyors of top quality alcoholic beverages and their GB is an absolute ripper. This deliciously
refreshing little number is the best thing to come out of Manly NSW since Elle Macpherson and the road north to Queensland. The GB is a cracking tasty treat for our hot summer days, with its unique bitter f avour and sessional vibe. I’m not usually bang up for buying alcoholic ginger beer, but his one has had me hooked from the get go. It’s clear the team have poured plenty of love, time and effort into making this ginger ninja the premier GB on the market. It’s only four per cent alcohol, so it’s not going to leave you feeling too shabby the next day. Sorry Ed Sheeran, I’ve got a new favourite ginger in 2015. I give the Brookvale Union Ginger Beer a solid 4 out of 5 thumbs up.

Summer of Racing Carnival to boost Coast economy by $2 million
I
RACING ESSENTIALS
t will be one of the richest horse racing events on the Queensland Summer Racing calendar and it’s set to take place on our doorstep. With more than $1.29 million up for grabs, the inaugural Summer of Racing Carnival will kick off on January 15 and include two feature race days over two weekends. Sunshine Coast Turf Club CEO Mick Sullivan says securing these feature events has been a major coup for the Coast. “This is an acknowledgment by the racing industry that we have a great track with great facilities – that the Coast is capable of hosting high prof le racing meets,” he says. Tourism and Events Chair, Bill Darby, from the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce says the carnival will attract 5000 additional visitors to the region. “It is probably worth about $2 million to the local economy. January is always a great time of year for tourism, but these events will see even more people head to the region
hand up for a feature event,” he says. The industry here also hopes to capitalise on the success of the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions Carnival which has become one of the biggest events on the racing calendar. “Our carnival kicks off the following weekend and we’re conf dent that a lot of the trainers will head north to take part in our races following their involvement in the Magic Millions,” Sullivan said. and extend their stay to take in the racing action,” he says. The f rst ever Coastline BMW Racing Minister’s 2YO Classic will take place on Saturday January 17 with $775,000 prize money on offer, including a $100,000 bonus. It will be followed by the $520,000 Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Sunshine Coast Cup on Australia Day. There’ll be a wealth of family fun, entertainment and evening activities on offer around the two events. “We usually run local meets
through the month of January, but these two feature races – which have metropolitan status and big prize money on offer – will really lift our industry to the next level in terms of attracting talent from interstate and securing future investment.” The idea for the Summer Carnival of Racing came about off the back of the temporary closure of Eagle Farm Racecourse. “There has been a considerable amount of lobbying going on. We saw the renovations at Eagle Farm as the perfect opportunity to put our

5 fashion tips for race day Words: Dianna Mullins MWP Stylist, Dianna Mullins dressed by Jason Brunson from Myer Maroochydore and headpiece by local milliner Tracey Mac
1. Make your headwear your feature. Racewear is the one fashion opportunity for a head piece to be the star item. 2. Don’t be bound by matching everything - unless it’s Derby Day when black and white rules apply.
How do you feel about the inaugural Sunshine Coast Summer of Racing Carnival? It’s terrif c. It gives local trainers like myself a very exciting goal to work towards. What are the advantages of racing on your own turf? It makes it easier when you can just walk your horses across the road to compete rather than having to transport them. What is the key to being a good horse trainer? Patience… and then more patience.
3. Wear gorgeous shoes (always) but wait – can you last the full day in them? 4. Invest in millinery. I swear it’s worth it. Don’t be afraid to get extra wear out of it at special events. I am a huge fan of the English tradition to wear a hat to weddings - love it, let’s embrace it. 5. Get ideas from the celebrities who are often dressed by stylists or designers for major race days such as the Melbourne Cup and Ladies Oaks Day.

e hasn’t called the Sunshine Coast home for long, but Stuart Kendrick has already made his mark in the local horse racing industry. My Weekly Preview recently had a chat with the Sunshine Coast’s leading trainer for 2013/14. How long have you been involved in the industry? I’ve been training horses for about 24 years. I started off by working with Arabians. That progressed to breeding, training and breaking-in stock for family and friends. I then decided to get my owner/trainer license. I trained horses in Mackay and Brisbane for many years before moving to the Sunshine Coast. What led to your move to South-East Queensland? One of our f llies ran fourth in the Golden Slipper and the same horse was named Queensland Country Horse of the Year. Some of my owners started expressing interest in having their horses based further south and it felt like the right time to relocate.

ot many cars could get away with a new colour called Blue Jelly Bean. Or, for that matter, another called Mint Mikshake. But Italian maker Fiat’s impossibly cute baby car, the 500, has always been a little bit different. The reincarnation of the famous Bambino that helped make Fiat a household name back in the 1950s and 60s has had an equally transformative effect on the brand since its relaunch several years ago. This retro-styled, feel-good machine has been
[ 40 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J AN UARY 9, 201 5

refreshed, restyled and replenished with some fancy new technology in its latest guise. It’s even been cut down to size, price-wise. Having commanded prices as high as $30,000 when it f rst arrived in Australia, the 500 seems to represent more sensible value these days. It can be had for as little as $17,000 drive away in its most modest form, called the Pop – and while high end versions still tip over the $25K-mark, the revamped 500 enjoys more technology and equipment than ever before.
The updated 500, which arrived in August, will be offered in three trim levels, each with their own unique engine, ranging from the entry-level Pop ($17K, drive away) up to the posh Lounge ($25,500 with its Dualogic automatic transmission). Between those two sits our test machine – the 500 Sport – which retails for a neat $20,000 onroad in manual form, or $1500 more with the self-shifting transmission. We’ve become used to words like Sport being thrown around like confetti by car makers in recent times, but in the case of the 500 it’s at least got some basis in fact. The Sport version of the 500 uses a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering the sharpest performance of any of the three model variants. The Pop uses a less powerful 1.2-litre, fourcylinder powerplant while the Lounge, somewhat ironically, features the smallest but most economical engine in the Fiat range, the 900cc, two-cylinder turbocharged TwinAir Turbo, which Fiat claims is the most economical petrol engine in Australia with a thirst of just 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres. By comparison, the Sport’s perky little turbocharged engine and slick, close-ratio six-speed manual transmission give the little 500 surprising, even engaging personality. Driven conservatively, it’s a sedate, almost boring proposition. But with the red Sport button on the dashboard engaged, and some enthusiastic use of the right foot, this little kitten manages to bare its claws. OK, 73 kilowatts and 131 Newton metres of torque don’t exactly tear the top off the tarmac, but keep in mind the 500 is slightly larger than your average sandshoe and weighs barely more. Once it’s spinning and in full, almost throaty
M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

[ voice, the 1.4-litre powerplant delivers smart acceleration and, coupled with the car’s nimble, nicely-balanced handling, the 500 more than justif es the ‘Sport’ tag. It also enjoys some unique styling cues including smart sports seats embossed with the 500 logo and a unique version of the 500’s new digital instrument panel. The new 7.7-inch, TFT digital instrument panel is a feature of this new 500 range delivering a video game-style display for speed, engine performance and fuel economy readouts. When sport mode is engaged, a rev-counter replaces the normal economy display and there’s even a G-Force meter. That might be jumping the shark just a little. Fiat claims class-leading status for this new dash display, developed in conjunction with fabled Italian company Magneti Marelli (a regular collaborator with Fiat’s corporate cousin Ferrari). The high-tech display, standard on Sport and high-spec Lounge models, also includes gearshift indicator, media
player, telephone and (where applicable) navigation information. The gee-whiz dash display doesn’t otherwise alter the endearing, retro feel of the 500 cockpit, which is also surprisingly roomy for such a small machine. All-round visibility, too, is excellent. This car is an absolute joy to drive in city traff c and to slot into impossibly small parking spaces. No wonder it’s been such a sales success in the congested big cities of Europe. Sitting in the driver’s seat, you
can literally reach back and touch the rear hatch, yet there is adequate rear-seat leg room for two full-sized occupants. Cargo space is modest but can be supplemented by folding one or both of the rear seats forward. The 500 is reasonably at home on the open road, too although my wife didn’t enjoy the experience of buzzing along the freeway in such a small car, surrounded by heavy trucks and hulking SUVs. In that context, it does seem a bit vulnerable. But seven airbags and a full electronic stability program ensure its f ve-star safety credentials. It sits securely on the road, and maintains highway cruising speeds with ease thanks to the long-legged performance of its six-speed transmission. OK, the 500 has its limitations and, to be honest, it isn’t exactly my cup of tea. But, then again, I suspect I’m not part of its target market. At least not until I acquire a taste for Blue Jelly Beans and Mint Milkshakes.

5 steps to buying a home If your New Year’s resolution is to buy your f rst home, it’s time to get educated on the process. Here are the steps to buying property. 1. If you’re keen to jump on the property ladder, no doubt you’ve saved up a deposit. The greater your deposit the better position you’ll be in to buy your dream home and get f nance to help pay for it. But a deposit is just the beginning. Your lender may also require you to take out mortgage insurance, plus you’ll need to cover costs such as solicitor’s fees, loan establishment costs, insurance and stamp duty. Before setting off to open homes, talk to a mortgage broker or your f nancial advisor. Head to www. reiq.com/buying-selling/costs-ofbuying-property for more.
2. Before you’re ready to make an offer to purchase a home you should have an idea of the type of property you need, what requirements you have – close to schools or work, near the beach, a short walk to the shops – and what types of properties are available in your price range. While the current market is now recovering from years in the doldrums and more buyers are about, prices are still low, but are likely to rise in 2015. Keeping an eye on the market and what it is doing months before you’re ready to buy will ensure when you are looking to make an offer, you’ll be conf dent doing so.
3. You’ve found a home and are keen to make an offer, but before you do be sure to get an exact idea from the agent just what f xtures and any chattels are
included in the sale. Fixtures such as the mail box, ceiling fans and air-conditioning units, carpets, the stove and hot water system are generally all included in the sale but be sure to read your contract to ensure there are no exclusions. You want to know exactly what you are – and aren’t – getting in the sale.
4. The real estate agent who is tasked with selling a property will want you to make any offers in writing. This is perfectly normal, and helps show the seller that you are serious and alleviates any confusion that a purely verbal offer could incur. The agent will give you several documents, and at this stage it’s sensible to get some legal advice, and a building and pest inspection. When you’ve signed the offer, you’ll probably be asked to pay a deposit as a show of goodwill. If for any reason you decide to terminate the offer during the cooling-off period, the deposit will be refunded.
5. If the buyer accepts your offer, then it’s time to count down to settlement date. The date of settlement is something you have agreed upon with the seller, but generally it is between 30 and 90 days after you’ve signed the contract. During this period your solicitor will organise the property paperwork, running a title search to ensure the property is free of encumbrances or caveats and into future zoning – you don’t want the council planning to build a freeway through your backyard. On settlement day your bank will authorise the payment of money to
the vendor, you will receive the title of the property and the agent will release the keys to you.
INSPECTION CHECKLIST When heading into open homes you’re not merely looking at the decor and how many bedrooms and bathrooms the home has. Be sure to take a good look around before even thinking about making an offer. The Real Estate Institute of Queensland recommends potential buyers: • Check for signs of rising damp, such as mould on the walls and rotting carpet • Check the ceiling for cracks • Test light switches • Test the water pressure on taps – a slow f ow might be the sign of blocked drains • Outside, check for water staining on eaves – might be a sign of damaged gutters • Look for broken tiles • Check the pool fence (if the property has one) • Look out for large trees close to the house – their roots might cause structural problems. While potential issues might not be enough to stop you making an offer, it’s a good idea to know what future maintenance issues you might have to deal with as a new owner.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] It’s a week when you may wonder if you are a big brave Aries at all! With mighty Mars (your ruling planet) now meandering through passive Pisces (until February 20), it’s time to morph from a rowdy ram into a gentle lamb.
TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Paid or volunteer work is stimulating (and demanding) at the moment, so make sure you put aside time for rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. If you wear yourself out, you’ll be no use to anyone! Expect frustration regarding shared resources or a joint financial arrangement.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] The Mercury/Venus/Uranus connections are sensational for creative brainstorming as you explore, experiment, converse and connect. 2015 is the perfect year to study something new. As Benjamin Franklin wrote, “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest”.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] For some crabs, an old health problem could re-surface or you may just feel physically sluggish. With Saturn sauntering through your wellbeing zone, it’s time to establish healthy, disciplined habits for 2015. It’s a good week to roll up your sleeves.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Attached Leos – with Mercury and Venus visiting your relationship zone, get talking and collaborating with your partner. Find out what they are thinking and how they are feeling. It’s not all about you. Single lions looking for love – now’s the time to pounce!
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] The Mercury/Uranus connection encourages creative thinking, as you explore some innovative new ideas. With Mars firing up your relationship zone, it’s time to be proactive about patching up partnership problems (whether of the romantic, platonic or business variety).
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Are you full of fabulously creative ideas and perfect plans but short on practical application? This week the challenge is to follow through on your long list of commitments – no matter how daunting they are, or how many obstacles are placed in your way.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] When it comes to a current problem with a child, teenager or friend, an impulsive knee-jerk reaction will only inflame the situation and make the relationship go backwards. Cool compromise is the key. Smart Scorpios – be extra careful with your cash flow.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Make sure you’ve done all the background work required to ensure a successful 2015. Don’t assume you can take shortcuts! Many Sagittarians are gifted writers and, with Mercury and Venus in your communication zone, the stars favour expressing your creative ideas in written form.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Capricorns are the perfectionists of the zodiac. Your conscientious streak is likely to go into overdrive this week as Mars squares Saturn, and your frustration levels go through the roof. It feels as if people and circumstances are holding you back but resist the inclination to be critical of others.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] With Venus visiting your sign, you’re at your attractive Aquarian best. Personal projects and social networking are particularly favoured, as you mix things up and multi-task to the max. The Mercury/Venus/ Uranus connections favour doing something wildly different.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Dynamic Mars is marching through your sign (until February 20) which helps you become as motivated and proactive as a Piscean can possibly be. It also allows you to draw on deep inner reserves of strength, bravery and fortitude that you sometimes forget exist.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
Well did you get your Xmas presents under the tree or in the ocean? Yep! Heaps of waves were on offer with winds holding off until mid-morning most days. It is said even Santa was out amongst it grabbing a few sliders. This weekend if I am to believe the forecast it will be the Devil’s wind but let’s not totally rely on the weather man. Check it early and if he is wrong, and there is a 50 per cent chance he will be, you will score. And for those of you heading to Japan or Canada snowboarding I have two words....it’s on!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Quality whiting are taking yabbies on the rising tide opposite the Bli Bli boat ramp. You can get flathead on lures slow trolled along banks throughout river systems. Mud crabs and mangrove jack are up in Petrie and Eudlo Creeks. You’ll find tailor and trevally at the Maroochy Bar using ‘poppers’. SURF: There’s sand whiting and dart in the low tide gutters from Mudjimba to North Shore with pippies and worms best to use. Tailor are being taken right on dark. You can get bream off the rocks at Alexandra Headland using mullet and fowl gut. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow grassy sweetlip, cod and moses perch are being taken from The Gneerings and Coolum using squid and mullet fillet. Spanish mackerel are working bait and lures from The Blinker off Mooloolaba to Brays Rock, Caloundra. Plenty of marlin and cobia are being caught. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam in these warm, steamy conditions is favouring golden perch on trolled deep diver lures and spinner baits, cast beside timber near the power lines. Lake Baroon is best for bass and spangled perch around the boat ramp using floated baits.
