T

he water cooler discussions have centred on just one thing the past couple of days – the weekend heat, or more precisely, how we all tried to deal with it. Those who didn’t have pools quickly renewed friendships with those who do, and portable air conditioners were found and deployed. My family found refuge in the refreshing waters off Coolum, with our Sunday becoming all about sand, surf, sunscreen and ice-cream. I didn’t bump into the new Triple Crown surf ng champion Julian Wilson at his local beach, but I did catch up with him recently to talk about his remarkable f nish to 2014. That chat has become the basis for this week’s cover story, and what an impressive young man he is. My Weekly Preview also takes a closer look at humidity (p21) – could the timing be any better? We travel to Launceston, rate the fashion from the Golden Globes, and test drive a car which will set you back a quarter of a million dollars. There’s plenty of property as always, including everything you need to know about stamp duty - a hot-button issue in the upcoming state election. I look forward to talking with you again next week.

coolum’s king of the the waves © WSL/MASUREL

AFTER HIS BIG WIN AT THE PIPELINE MASTERS IN HAWAII, JULIAN WILSON IS BACK HOME. HE CHATS WITH MY WEEKLY PREVIEW ABOUT GROWING UP ON THE SUNSHINE COAST AND THE HEALTHY FAMILY COMPETITION THAT PROPELLED HIM FROM AMATEUR SURFER TO TRIPLE CROWN CHAMPION

WORDS: RICHARD O’LEARY

December 19, 2014 - Oahu, Hawaii There are just over two minutes left in the f nal of the Pipeline Masters in Oahu, Hawaii – and Brazil’s Gabriel Medina and Coolum’s Julian Wilson sit out the back watching and waiting. Medina is f oating on air as much as salt water after becoming his country’s f rst world surf ng champion just hours earlier. The 20 year-old’s compatriots are partying on the beach – willing him on to another f rst, to become the only Brazilian to win the Pipeline Masters – and along the way take his tally of tour victories to four in 2014. Over the same period Wilson hasn’t won an event. It’s his toughest tour since f rst appearing in 2011. The year’s been so bad he had to compete in a qualifying event to try and secure a spot on the 2015 tour. But in the previous month there have been glimpses of Wilson at his best in the f rst two legs of the Triple Crown. He f nished second in the Reef Hawaiian Pro in Honolulu, but subsequently bombed out of the Vans World Cup of Surf ng. He’s a long shot heading into the f nal leg – but it is possible. The Triple Crown is second only to the World Title in prestige – and its honour roll reads like a who’s who of surf ng. Hawaiians dominate – Sunny Garcia has won it six times, Andy Irons has collected four titles, and brothers Derek and Michael Ho have six crowns

between them. The biggest surf ng name of them all, Florida’s Kelly Slater, has won it only twice despite being an 11 times world champion. With just 129 seconds remaining in the f nal, time is running out for Wilson to add his name to that list. The earlier results have gone his way and he can win the Triple Crown if he wins the Pipeline Masters. Second will not be good enough. It’s all or nothing. In surf ng your two highest scores count; Medina’s best rides are a perfect 10 and an 8. Wilson has a 9.93 and a 2. He needs an 8.08 to take the lead. Wilson remains calm. “[I’m] not thinking about the outcome, not thinking about what can happen, or can’t happen, more thinking about making sure I’m in the right position if the right opportunity comes and when it comes that

I tur turned around and paddled for that wave and I just got into it; I got a good bottom turn and got in the barrel, and it was a big wide one with plenty of room ed and then it spat and I knew I’d got the score I needed I’m going to be able to ride that wave and enjoy that moment and not be thinking about everything else that could happen or couldn’t happen,” he says. As the clock counts down he spots the wave he wants, but there’s a problem. Wilson doesn’t have the call. “I knew that the wave was really, really good. I M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

didn’t have priority at that point of the heat and Gabriel (Medina) had priority and I asked him as that wave was coming if he was going, because there was clearly some bigger one behind it. He just kinda went, ‘I’ll get the next one’, so just right there I turned around and paddled for that wave.” By this stage he’s been in the water for more than an hour-and-a-half after three straight heats. His body is sore, he’s mentally spent, he’s running on empty, but he lifts for one more effort. It’s now or never. His worst year on the tour can become his best. “I turned around and paddled for that wave and I just got into it; I got a good bottom turn and got in the barrel, and it was a big wide one with plenty of room and then it spat and I knew I’d got the score I needed.” But it’s not over. The new world champion has one more chance with the last ride of the event, as Wilson looks on. “I was riding the whitewash in and after carrying on a bit, I turned around and saw he [Medina] was on the next wave going left and I just saw the end of it and it looked like a pretty good one, but it looked like he didn’t have that big open barrel, that big spitting barrel… and I felt like I had it, and I got to the beach and nobody wanted to say that I’d got it, or I didn’t get it, so we just waited until the scores came.” Wilson’s score f ashes up f rst: 9.7; Medina needs 9.64 to win. Even the boisterous Brazilians pause for breath… 9.2. The kid from Coolum who grew up surf ng the small stuff on the Sunshine Coast has become king of the big waves. “Those three events you have to surf all conditions, from big barrels to small turns and high performance surf ng. That’s why it is a mini-world title because the best guys go there to compete for those three events. We never see waves like that, even the best day ever in the history of the Sunshine Coast you won’t see waves like that. I think it makes us more hungry to prove ourselves when the waves are like that.”

WILSON’S TIPS FOR WEEKEND SURFERS: • Copy the moves of your favourite surfer • Get inspired by surfing movies • Use a board that’s fun for the conditions

Julian Wilson turns up for the interview in a late model Audi white station wagon. He’s on time, polite and friendly. Everything about him screams marketer’s dream: clean-cut good looks, well-spoken and wearing the tan of the pro surfer. He generously lugs the 18-kilogram cast iron Pipeline Masters trophy down the sandy steps to First Bay, which means I only have to carry his featherweight board. We sit in the sand on one of the beaches where he f rst learned to surf as a three year-old, which is also just a short drive from the home where he grew up as the youngest of three boys in a family fanatical about surf ng. “It made me competitive for sure. There’s a seven-year gap between me and my eldest brother, and f ve years between me and the middle brother and I just always wanted to be hanging out with their friends and keeping up with them and surf ng the waves they surfed. I think that pushed me to always be out of my comfort zone and to always be a bit scared, but really challenging myself right from a young age. That really helped me.” Wilson doesn’t take his eyes off the surf as he talks, seemingly always on the lookout for that next wave. The 26 year-old is as enthusiastic about surf ng as when he f rst started. He says being a professional surfer is pretty much the best job in the world – but hesitates before giving advice to youngsters who may want to follow in his footsteps. “It’s not something you want to start out at a very young age and be, ‘I want to be that’. It’s one of those things that you’re playing in the ocean and you’ve got to enjoy it and you can’t force it because it’s very easy to get burnt out on something that you really should be enjoying. The biggest message for young kids that are coming through that are trying to skip any steps, they’ve just got to enjoy it and surf with their friends and not be too competitive with their friends at such a young age because you’re going continued over>

to be competing forever.” It’s a perspective you can’t help but feel has been inf uenced by his mum Nola’s battle with breast cancer when he was f ve years old. He became an ambassador for the Breast Cancer Foundation six years ago and every year at the Snapper surf ng event, raises money by wearing pink boardies and riding a pink-themed board. “It wasn’t until I got older that I understood what she went through and how scary it was. At that age it was that she just wasn’t around that often. She was catching the train to Brisbane on her own to get her treatment done.” It makes other challenges seem small in comparison. “There’s some days, like even Pipeline when it was 12 to 15 foot, and washing through, and your best chance of getting a score was just committing yourself to get smashed. That’s just the way it is.”

Brushstrokes bring bushfires and birds to life WORDS: Angela Takats

P

eople often ask Greg Postle why he paints birds. The story goes back to his childhood when, at the age of seven, his father entrusted him with the upkeep of a small bird aviary on their rural property in central Queensland. After going away on a family holiday, Postle returned home to discover he hadn’t left enough water out for the birds. As he approached the wire enclosure he was confronted with a dozen lifeless little bodies scattered across the aviary f oor. As a small boy, the responsibility for their death weighed heavy on his heart. “I suppose there’s a part of me that feels that painting birds is a way of bringing my childhood pets back to life – a way of making peace with what happened,” Postle says. Based on the Sunshine Coast, Postle has developed a reputation as one of Australia’s leading bird painters due to his exquisite technique and immaculate eye for detail. In his latest series, titled Outer Limits, he explores the relationship between birds and bushf res. “It’s amazing to watch the way birds of prey will head towards a f re front,” Postle says. “A few years ago I was out near Kunanurra when this massive f re came roaring up through the gorge. “There were thousands of falcons, eagles, kites and kestrels f ying around – some looked like they were swooping straight into the f ames in order to catch animals and insects f eeing the bush.

Firewalker, by Greg Postle captures the “beautiful metallic sheen” of the wings of an ibis. From his latest series, Outer Limits.

“I suppose I wanted to show how f re can be destructive, but also a source of life and energy.” The birds in Postle’s work look like they could f y right off the canvas. He has a way of not only capturing their physicality, but also their personality. “People don’t see the beauty in birds like the ibis. They’re often found around rubbish tips, scavenging for scraps, but when you see them in their natural environment you realise just how striking they are. “There’s a kaleidoscope of

colours in their wings, with this beautiful metallic sheen. And when you look at their heads, with their wrinkled skin and eyes, you get a sense that they are wise creatures,” he says. Most of the inspiration for Postle’s paintings comes from regular trips to the outback where he can spend weeks on end immersed in nature. “I usually get up before dawn and f nd a good spot to watch the birds – a place where I can’t be seen. “I’ve witnessed some pretty

amazing things. Last time I was in the Kimberly I watched a massive croc explode out of the water and take two magpie geese in the one grab,” he says. He’s happiest when he’s out bush, but most of Postle’s time is spent in his Noosaville art studio – with some of his paintings taking up to six months to complete. His work has been selected f ve years in a row for the internationally acclaimed Birds in Art exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in America. To see Postle’s Outer Limits series head to gregpostle.com.

Coast scores another major surf rescue competition

T

he Sunshine Coast has secured another major surf life saving event in the lead-up to the Australian championships next year. Maroochydore Beach will host the International Surf Rescue Challenge in early September, with the three tests to include swim, surf board, surf ski and beach events. Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Canada have already been

conf rmed for the event, and a number of other countries are expected to take part. The International Surf Rescue Challenge started in 1939 as the Trans Tasman Series – a competition between Australia and New Zealand. The event will be held just eight months before the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. The Aussies will be held between

April 16 and 24, 2016 on Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba beaches. The championships draw more than 7,000 competitors as well as a further 15,000 supporters, family and friends to the Sunshine Coast. The 2016 event has added signif cance as it coincides with the 100th anniversary of surf life saving on the Sunshine Coast.

New initiative aims to amplify success for Sunshine Coast businesses Amplitude is the name of a new initiative which aims to turn up the volume about the Sunshine Coast being a great place to do business. It makes a big splash about local business success stories, in the hope the ripple effect will reach well beyond the region’s borders. Fourteen businesses have been identif ed and another round of nominations has just opened. The latest business to become a f ag-bearer for the initiative is the Mapleton campus of the

Queensland Conference and Camping Centre (QCCC). The team is now gearing up for the start of a new school year after serving 165,000 meals, and hosting 200 school groups in 2014. Primary school students are eating up the Sunshine Coast’s new nature classroom from history lessons by the campf re with Gubbi Gubbi identity Kerry Neill, hands-on Eureka stockade physical challenges and First Fleet problem-solving re-enactments. It’s a cure for the current “nature

def cit disorder” affecting today’s students, according to QCCC director Andrew Grant. “You see it with kids coming out of urban areas interstate and internationally. They are crying out for a positive experience of having

fun in the outdoors,” says Grant. “We are investing in the Coast, accommodating 30,000 people on the Blackall Range annually. We buy local... and provide work for 65 people, making us the biggest employer in Mapleton. Amplitude is the creation of the Sunshine Coast Chambers Alliance, Sunshine Coast Business Council, and the Sunshine Coast Council. If you know a Sunshine Coast business with a great story to tell, email: amplitude@ems.com.au.

Humidity knocking you around? WIN News weather presenter and meteorologist Hannah McEwan explains why humidity is so draining

I

f you have been feeling sluggish or fatigued lately, it is probably due to the high humidity levels we have been experiencing. The Coast’s increase in humidity during summer is one of the main differences in the weather compared to winter, and lately it has been almost unbearable. Humidity is a measure of the amount of water vapour in the air, and is a good indication of the likelihood of rain or fog. The most humid places in the world are close to the equator and a body of water like the ocean or a lake. Humidity is measured in

MY W EEKLYPREVIE W. CO M . AU

21.indd 1

different ways, but relative humidity (RH) is the most common. Relative humidity is given as a percentage of the amount of moisture in the air, compared to the maximum amount of moisture the air can actually hold at a particular temperature. If the RH is 100 per cent, the air is totally saturated and cannot hold any more moisture so the chance of rain is high. Warm air can hold more moisture than cooler air, so as the temperature increases during the day, the relative humidity will decrease. The opposite will occur if the air is cooled. We are very sensitive to humidity as we rely on the process of sweating to cool our body. When the air is very humid, the rate our sweat evaporates into the air is lower, making it feel much hotter than the actual temperature. If the air is dry, we can feel much colder than the actual temperature, as our sweat evaporates very easily, cooling us off very quickly.

Business confidence on the Coast hits six-year high Business conf dence on the Sunshine Coast has risen to its highest level since 2009, according to the latest Sunshine Coast Business Conf dence Survey. The survey shows conf dence is higher than it was before the Global Financial Crisis. More than half of businesses performed stronger over the past six months, and more than 50 per cent also expect to increase prof tability in the f rst half of 2015.

Mayor Mark Jamieson says the survey results continue a trend of optimism returning to the local business community. “The business conf dence index has risen to 116 points, which is an all-time high since surveying began here in 2009 and nearly 20 points higher than the rock-bottom depths of April 2011 after the Queensland f oods,” says Mayor Jamieson. A third of businesses expect to hire more staff.

Give blood for Aussie Day As the nation gears up to celebrate the Australia Day long weekend, the Red Cross Blood Service is calling on donors to roll up their sleeves to ensure there is a continuous supply of platelets – a blood product that lasts only f ve days and is vital to the treatment of cancer patients. Holidays are a challenging time for the Blood Service because regular donors often go away. If you are aged between 16 and 70 years and are healthy and able, contact the

Blood Service on 13 14 95 to make an appointment. Remember to eat something before donating – and to drink at least three glasses of water prior to your appointment.

> Google Translate

Google has begun turning smartphones into real-time language translators of written and spoken content. The internet titan hopes that, along with making it easier for people to understand one another on their travels, Google Translate will serve as a useful tool for teachers, medical personnel, police and others with important roles in increasingly multilingual communities. The company began introducing a new version of a free Google Translate application that, in part, lets people point Android or Apple smartphones at signs, menus, recipes or other material written in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish and see it in English. Word Lens in Google Translate operates independent of the internet, so it avoids data charges from telecommunication service providers and it features a conversation mode that uses voice recognition and the cloud to translate both sides of a chat between two people speaking different languages. < Instagram candy: the Tamar River, Launceston, as seen from from Kings Park is a must. Grab a bacon and egg roll with locally made chilli jam or learn about honey from a passionate stallholder. Stillwater and The Black Cow Bistro offer top-notch produce in a f ne dining atmosphere, while PX Tapas Wine is more relaxed but still boasts a seasonal menu and paddock-to-plate philosophy. If you travel to neighbouring Evandale, you can visit Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Company, tour their wonderful gardens, and sample sweet and savoury delights.

FOOD, FUN AND FILM Culture vultures, adventurers and foodies will find Launceston packs a lot into a picturesque little package. By Caris Bizzaca, AAP

W

hen I gleefully reveal I’m heading to Tasmania for the first time, I’m met with a confused stare. “Hobart?” people ask. “Launceston,” I reply, showing I’m a true tourist by pronouncing it “Lawn-ceston” instead of “Lon-ceston”. Despite their lack of enthusiasm, now that I’ve been – and been delighted – by the charming city of “Lonnie”, I can happily tell all those naysayers they don’t know what they’re missing. Launceston was picturesque – perfect for any diehard Instagrammers – and tickled my

adventurous side, borderline-obsession with food and even, surprisingly, my love of cinema. In case you aren’t convinced, here are f ve reasons why you should make a trip to Lonnie.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Tasmania is steadily becoming one of THE Australian food and wine destinations, hosting the likes of Heston Blumenthal at a top foodie event in November. That reputation is on show in Launceston, where a visit to the bustling Harvest Market on a Saturday

LOCAL TIPPLE IS SOME OF WORLD’S BEST A short drive from the heart of Launceston you’ll f nd yourself in the jaw-dropping, perfectly manicured beauty of Josef Chromy’s vineyards. Book ahead for a Sunday winery tour ($25 per person), stop by the cellar door, or head to the restaurant, overlooking the lake and vineyards which stretch to the horizon. There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding Tassie wines and not just in Australia, with the 2011 Josef Chromy Chardonnay taking home the 2013 Decanter World Wine Awards International Trophy for Best Chardonnay. To check out more from the area, travel the Tamar Valley Wine Route, try James Boag’s Brewery or wander down to the doors of new bar Saint John Craft Beer.

HIGH-FLYING FUN Many people would have heard of zipline tours – where you climb up into the forest canopy, hook yourself on steel cables and travel from platform to platform up in the trees. But what about doing it at night? Fly in the dark, the wind whipping at your face as a headlamp illuminates your path through the trees, each platform a beacon at the end of your exhilarating journey. Hollyband Treetops Adventure offers day and night zipline tours. For a fun ground-based option, try their Segway Tour, where you can tear around bush tracks. Back in the city, set off on the walking tracks around Cataract Gorge. The Zig Zag Track will leave you breathless, both from the climb and the view. Also jump on the southern hemisphere’s longest single-span chairlift, which meanders through a gorgeous tunnel of f owers.

REEL GOOD Who would have thought old Lonnie was a bit of a f lm hub?

But cinema fans from around the island state and mainland f ock to Launceston every November for the annual Tasmanian Breath of Fresh Air Film Festival. The festival has been running for f ve years and showcases a selection of the year’s best f icks. Being in Launceston means BOFA has a great community feel to it – driven by the passion of founder Owen Tilbury and his wife Helen, and the locals, who have together taken it into their own hands to get more independent f lms to the region.

CITY WITH SMALL-TOWN FEEL Launceston is a blend of Adelaide and New Zealand’s Queenstown. It’s got the old-school charming facades and wide roads of somewhere like Adelaide, but the green vibrance of Kiwi cities. And everything is either in walking distance or a 20-minute drive away. Speaking of location, it is further south than mainlanders are used to, so remember to pack for all seasons.

Australian property trusts – 2015 outlook

Troy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

P

roperty trusts (REITs) are well placed to continue their solid performance in 2015 if supportive macro-economic and capital markets conditions persist. In a departure from recent years, instability in global commodity markets has contributed to a fall in the Australian dollar and a declining petrol price, both of which should help the economy and, in particular, the retail property sector (the largest in the REIT index). In addition, expectations of lower global growth have resulted in a f attening of the yield curve in recent months and long-term interest rates have declined to all-time lows.

This should sustain strong demand in transactional markets and drive further capital growth/yield compression. Assuming global interest rates remain low, we forecast Australian REITs to deliver returns of 7–10 per cent in 2015. The earnings outlook for REITs is defensive, with potential for upside as the year unfolds. Our preferred REITs to own for 2015 are Stockland Property Group (SGP, Accumulate), DEXUS Property Group (DXS, Accumulate), and Mirvac Group (MGR, Accumulate). • Portfolio growth drivers Retail – We expect specialty retail sales growth to stabilise at 3.0–3.5 per cent, which should underpin retail net income growth of two to three per cent (despite expiring rents being reset lower to market). Off ce – Sydney and Melbourne are improving, albeit slowly, with a combined 50,000 square metres of net absorption in the December quarter (JLL), and a return to

inf ationary growth in rents and stabilisation of incentives. Perth and Brisbane remain challenged and are likely to deteriorate, but the REIT sector has little exposure. We expect one to two per cent off ce income growth to be repeated in 2015. Residential – We believe sales volumes are close to peaking in most markets, and will moderate slightly in 2015 and price growth will slow to 3–5 per cent. • Balance sheet dynamics Falling debt costs and new development projects will again drive earnings growth. REIT’s have $12 billion of debt capacity to the upper end of target gearing ranges, which will be highly accretive if used given all-time low debt rates (less than four per cent). We expect REITs will sell up to $6 billion of assets in 2015, and while normally a drag on earnings, this could be offset if out-of-the-money interest rate hedges are terminated at the same time.

Overall, we expect the REIT sector to deliver average earnings growth of a healthy 3.6 per cent per annum between FY15 and FY18. TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe from 92.7 MIX FM’S Todd and Sami gives his opinion on the best brews of the week. The f rst month of 2015 is almost over. The summer holidays are almost done and dusted, the majority of us have already blown our New Year’s resolutions (mine is to lose just enough weight so that my belly doesn’t jiggle when I brush my teeth). We’re counting down to the Straya Day long weekend – that great celebration where die-hard bogan Aussies head to the beach or the local park, get on the cans and pledge to f ght anyone who dishonours our f ag and all it stands for. Onto f nances for the New Year. If you’re looking to invest this year, here here’s a little something that might interest you. According A to sources tha that are dodgier than a 3am kebab at Mooloolaba, if you had purchased $ $1000 worth of AIG sstock one year ago you would now have $32 left and with Lehman

brothers you’d probably have nothing. However, friends, if one year ago you’d purchased $1000 worth of beer, then taken all the empties to SA or the NT for recycling you’d have roughly $60! So, based upon this, the current smart investment advice is to drink beer and recycle. This week’s ace amber is a no-brainer and well worth investing your hard earned in. The Little Creatures range is clearly becoming a weekly favourite with more and more Aussies swerving standard beers like Clive Palmer swerves salad, instead opting for something crafty. My dad John and I indulged heavily in the LC Bright Ale during the festive season and along with Rogers and the 150 Lashes Pale, this little legend has become a staple in my beer fridge. The LC Bright Ale is a crackingly refreshing English-style Pale Ale that pleases the senses from start to f nish. Clean and crisp, full f avoured and easily approachable time and time again, I love this smooth fresh brew more the Charlie Sheen loves hookers and Persian rugs. Even more tops if you get it on tap. I give the Little Creatures Bright Ale a red hot 4.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

Starting jackpot of $500, increasing $100 each week if not won. Winner must be present.

When you are not at work, how do you enjoy the Sunshine Coast? As we are new to the area from Melbourne, we are discovering all the local towns and attractions and enjoying the beautiful beaches and scenery. What’s your favourite dish and why? We are really enjoying the beautiful fresh seafood and of course, topped off with a couple of scoops of gelato. Prue’s favourites are raspberry, hazelnut, coconut and salted caramel. Warren says: “Make mine mango”. What do you love about your business? Providing customers with smile. We sell a happy product and enjoy customers experiencing the amazing taste of our gelato. What do you love most about Kawana Shoppingworld? The family environment, not only amongst the customers but with the other retailers and centre management.

When you are not at work, how do you enjoy the Sunshine Coast? Exercising, surf ng and spending time with my family at our beautiful beaches. I also love eating out at as many different venues as possible on the Coast. What’s your favourite dish and why? Spicy chicken quesadillas with a side of large guacamole. I always f nish off with one of our churros dipped into dulce de leche caramel sauce. What do you love about your business? The people I work with are fantastic. GYG is like one big family. I also love making our customers happy when they try our amazing food. What do you love most about Kawana Shoppingworld? The great shopping and the amount of great food choices available. It is a one-stop shop for everything.

When you are not at work, how do you enjoy the Sunshine Coast? I moved to the Sunshine Coast from Brisbane six months ago to open Grill’d, so being minutes away from the beach is great. Otherwise I spend most of my days off down on Ocean Street with friends. What’s your favourite dish and why? A simply Grill’d with a side of our world famous chips of course. What do you love about your business? My assistant manager and I hired all of our staff new to the business and watching them grow and mature into their new roles is awesome to watch. What do you love most about Kawana Shoppingworld? All the other retailers are so friendly and passionate about their businesses. It’s also exciting to see the centre develop, I can’t wait to see what’s next.

According to beautydirectory.com. au, last year’s popular paleo and Atkins diets are being ditched for more sustainable eating habits in 2015. “When it comes to weight management, consumers have taken a dramatic departure from deprivation-style weight loss diets by simply eating healthier and adding specif c real food components and/or nutrients, says Arlor Natural Scientif c export manager Charlotte Goldstein. As well as enjoying a healthy diet, people are embracing natural, food-based solutions. Digestive health was also big in 2014 and will continue to be in 2015. Bioglan general manager Steve Brandt says, “There is going to be increased focus on the importance of gut health in 2015. Nature’s Way general manager Raphael Cohen adds, “Consumers are looking to build their immunity and digestive health. Probiotics are becoming increasingly more relevant.

Stately Audi A8 has improved with age WORDS Peter Atkinson

I

f you can’t beat `em, join `em. That seems to be the tactic Audi has adopted with the latest version of its f agship A8 luxury saloon. It’s been a few years since we last drove Audi’s big limo and in that time it seems to have grown a bit bigger and a bit softer around the edges than its former self. So have I, for that matter. In its previous guise, the A8 was easily the sportiest of the big three German marque’s top-end machines. In looks and performance, it

[ 42 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J AN UARY 23, 20 1 5

42.indd 1

was equal parts sports car and luxury conveyance. For that reason we preferred it, in many ways, to the better-selling, class-leading Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series. But clearly, somewhere along the line, Audi had a change of heart with the A8. Sporty has been replaced by stately. In its place is a more conservative, more corporatelooking halo model to the ever-growing, everimproving Audi stable. Gone, or at least toned down, are the alluring,

slinky lines and the low-slung, sporty stance. Gone, too, is the fairly focused driving characteristics, along with the punchy petrol V8 engine. The A8 is a diesel-only prospect these days. And generally, it’s a more ref ned, restrained package than in its youth. A recent mid-life upgrade has put the A8 back on our radar, so it was no hardship to become reacquainted with this impressive machine. With some cosmetic tweaks, there’s no doubt this latest A8 remains a beautiful thing and a beautiful thing to drive and ride in. The A8 lives in an intensely competitive segment of the market even if the entry-price is north of $200,000. Audi is f ghting for its share of attention against the legendary S-Class (considered by many to be the world’s best car) and the always high-tech 7-Series Beemer. Add to that Jaguar’s gorgeous XJ, which has assumed the mantle of the prettiest, sportiest member of this corporate club plus Lexus high-tech LS models – and you can see the task facing the A8. While the latest S-Class seems to have set new standards with its even more luxurious, high-tech aura, the upgraded A8 is no slouch on the technology and luxury front, either. Adaptive air suspension delivering a cloud-like ride active lane and side assist plus parking assist systems, adaptive cruise control and a full suite of safety systems underpin what is a very sophisticated package. In some ways, the A8 is leaner and more athletic than ever, particularly in the form we tested, with a massively powerful twin-turbocharged, 4.2-litre diesel V8. It’s a wondrous thing. It delivers 283 kilowatts and a staggering 850 Newton metres of torque ensuring that the A8’s relatively lithe 1880 kilograms (thanks to extensive use of lightweight aluminium) are ushered around with effortless ease.

The V8 A8 will rumble to the speed limit in an indecently quick 4.7 seconds, which Audi says makes it the fastest-accelerating diesel car in Australia. And it does so while consuming a ridiculously frugal 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres. Put it on the open road, with its long-legged eight-speed automatic transmission and the big diesel ticking over at barely 1200 revs per minute and it sips even less. Our only criticism of the drivetrain was an annoying lag of a second or two while those twin turbos spool up when called upon by the driver. That, in turn, means a lull before that glorious surge of power is delivered, via Audi’s Quattro allwheel-drive system, to all four wheels. Cruise into a corner and you have to wait a beat for the engine to come back on song before you can power out the other side. In sport mode, where the revs are kept up and the engine kept constantly interested, that’s less of an issue. But still it’s something of a disappointment in a car so sophisticated.

That said, this was probably the only fault and not a game-changing one at that. As well as being a rewarding drive, the A8 pampers its occupants as you might expect of its $195,000 (or $249,900 for the V8) pricetag. The MMI cabin management system is there in familiar format although the dimensions of it have been substantially downgraded and integrated into the centre console/ centre stack arrangement. It’s still easy to use but is no longer such a

prominent feature of the cockpit layout. I guess that’s a sign that these scroll-and-click systems have become the norm, rather than the gee-whiz selling point that they once were. Like the RS7, the satellite navigation offers the option of integrating Google Earth into the program giving an actual aerial view of your route on demand. The vivid colour screen atop the centre stack gives all manner of insight into the car’s performance and set-up. The A8 delivers a wonderfully ref ned, plush driving experience all the more so when it’s at full clip on the open road. It’s a big, wide, sure-footed thing and yet surprisingly nimble in large part because of the Quattro allwheel-drive, and in equal part because its relatively light. In freeway mode it feels so quiet and solid you’d swear it’s carved from granite. Not as frisky as it once was and a little bigger and more wellpadded perhaps. But there’s nothing wrong with that now is there?

Abolishing the tax

Call of duty As the state election looms, real estate experts are calling for an end to stamp duty in Queensland. So what is the duty and what would life be like without it?

W

hen you buy a property there are expenses you’ll have to factor into your budget (solicitor’s fees and mortgage insurance, building and pest inspection reports and loan establishment fees), but one of the biggest impositions is stamp duty, or, as it’s now known, transfer duty. Transfer duty is a tax that’s imposed by the State Government, though if you buy property in another Australian state you will also have to pay a duty – each state’s rules and rates vary. Transfer duty is something you have to pay if you either buy a property, or are gifted with one, and it’s paid by the purchaser. The amount the property purchaser will have to pay varies according to the sale price of the property, and whether it was bought as an investment or as a home to live in. There are also concessions and exemptions to the duty available, particularly for buyers purchasing their f rst home. Confused yet? The buyer’s solicitor will work out the rate, and the buyer then pays the solicitor, who then arranges for the payment to go to the government, but if you are curious to f nd out what your likely rate will be, the Queensland Off ce of State Revenue has a calculator that can help. Just go to osr.qld.gov.au/calculators/transfer-dutygrants-calculator.shtml to get an estimate. It’s not just property buyers who are affected by

46.indd 1

Transfer duty is something you have to pay if you either buy a property, or are gifted with one, and it’s paid by the purchaser

transfer duty. If you own a property with a family member or spouse, and you want to transfer your share of the property to the other person, you or the family member will still have to pay transfer duty. If the property transfer is part of a property settlement, you may be exempt. It’s worth checking with your family lawyer to see where you stand on this issue. Whether you are given a gift of property or you are buying out the other party on a property you already own, because the property isn’t bought and sold, you will need to have it valued to f nd out what it is worth. That way your solicitor can work out how much you will have to pay.

Queensland’s peak real estate industry body has called for transfer duty to be abolished in a pitch to the state’s political leaders. Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) CEO Antonia Mercorella says a broad legislative program and reforms are needed to create a stronger local real estate industry and promote growth in the residential property sector. “Queensland’s residential real estate sector is in recovery mode and it’s important to build on this momentum,” Mercorella says, “Real estate is crucial to the Queensland economy, contributing more than $8 billion towards Queensland’s gross state product and supporting almost 50,000 jobs throughout the state. That’s why we’re challenging the state’s lawmakers to ensure real estate reform is at the top of the political agenda throughout 2015. The real estate industry is vital to the state’s prosperity and we want to see further reforms introduced in Queensland.” As well as calling for the abolition of transfer duty on property transactions, the REIQ is also calling on politicians to reinstate f rst home owner grants for existing homes, and allow f rst-home buyers to access their superannuation to buy property. Mercorella says the abolition of ineff cient property taxes, along with incentives to generate more transactions and turnover, would pave the way for further growth in the industry. “Stamp duty on property transactions should be abolished and replaced by a more eff cient source of revenue. It’s a regressive tax which imposes additional costs on property transactions, thereby discouraging turnover of housing and distorting choices between renting and buying. “It also distorts choices between moving house and renovating and can deter labour mobility for those changing jobs, resulting in reduced investment in the property market.” Mercorella says reinstating the full spectrum of f rst home owner incentives will assist with Queensland’s residential housing recovery. “We want to see the f rst home owner grant for existing housing reinstated, so that incentives exist for both new and established housing. First home owner grants are an important form of f nancial assistance and there’s no sound basis for the preferential treatment which currently exists for buyers who purchase newly built properties. A more widely available f rst home owner grant will strengthen the real estate market, while delivering a crucial boost to the state’s wider economy. She added that one of the biggest hurdles f rst home buyers face is saving for a deposit, “so it makes sense to allow them to access their super for this purpose, provided the money is paid back within a specif c period”. “We believe this raft of reforms has the potential to boost real estate markets throughout Queensland and promote growth and jobs in the state economy.” M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

region – that increased to 646 in 2014. The Housing Industry Association (HIA) predicts the growth will continue as more serviced land comes into the market in 2015. The HIA says things are not as healthy in relation to the home renovation sector. “In the major renovation part of the home building market, conditions continue to be a bit slower, with approvals down nine per cent over the year to the November quarter. But the continuation of low interest rates and some growth in established house prices should see this part of the market also improve over 2015”, says Warwick Temby, HIA’s Queensland Executive Director.

T

he increase in apartment block developments in Queensland is giving way to strong growth in traditional housing. Home building approvals recorded by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for Queensland in the three months to November 2014 are up 14 per cent for detached homes over the same period in 2013 – with approvals for multi-unit residential projects falling by 28 per cent. On the Sunshine Coast there has been a 43 per cent increase in detached home approvals. In the three months to November in 2013 there were 452 approvals given for detached homes in the

REIQ Board welcomes new director The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has welcomed a new female director. Fraser Coast real estate identity Linda Bland is the owner of Century 21 Commercial Hervey Bay, which specialises in sales, leasing and property management of commercial and industrial properties. Her appointment increases the representation of regional Queensland on the REIQ Board.

As the state election approaches, Master Builders’ Queensland is calling on all parties to commit to initiatives that will increase growth in the building and construction industry. Master Builders’ has identif ed six priorities: stimulating demand for new construction; containing building costs; improving productivity on worksites; winding back the highly prescriptive approach to health and safety; improving the capacity of contractors to manage construction risk; and providing training that is relevant and benef cial to the industry. Master Builders’ Director Construction Policy, John Crittall, says there needs to be an overhaul of the current apprenticeship system. “We’re keen to work with the government to develop a new apprenticeship system that increases both the uptake and completion of new apprenticeships. Both of these outcomes are crucial to ensuring a strong building industry in the future and will help drive the government’s focus on job creation.” Apprenticeship completion rates are currently around 50 per cent. Crittall says there’s an urgent need to create a system that is relevant, f exible, cost effective and – most importantly – that is easy to understand for employers and apprentices.

NEW DEVELOPMENT

The sweet spot for apartment living

T

he Sunshine Coast is demonstrating a genuine recovery in the residential sector, with the apartment market the last to turn the corner. As a result, the supply of new projects has been limited to a handful of projects over the past seven years. With the recovery and availability of f nance now allowing larger projects to reignite the approval process, the problem now facing developers is the scarcity of high-quality development sites. Those projects that are well located and well priced are f nding the market demand is strong, particularly from the investment community. Property commentators recognise Mooloolaba is in the sweet spot for owner-occupiers and investors, and in the heart of the suburb is First Light Mooloolaba. The new development features 13 levels of architecturally designed apartments in First Avenue, where it can offer a rare north-eastfacing location boasting views across to the hinterland, and water views from level four. “Its central Mooloolaba position

offers owners the perfect base to leave the car at home and explore the vibrant cafe society,” says G1 Property’s project manager Michael Cornilsen. Simon Guilfoyle, the co-director of developers Guilfoyle Group, says interest in the project has been incredibly strong. “Already we have recorded more than 30 per cent of First Light sales have been secured by a diverse group of local professionals and interstate clients, with sales exceeding $10 million to date.” Apartments in First Light Mooloolaba start at just $329,000. There are 67 architecturally designed homes, including two-bedroom, two-bathroom air-conditioned apartments, and four-bedroom super penthouses. Other features of the development are a pool and barbecue area, f tness and cardio area and sun deck. Find out more by contacting Michael Cornilsen on 0414 233 026 or head to f rstlightmooloolaba.com.au.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Rams are in the mood to initiate, innovate and network … and others are finally sitting up and taking notice of what you’ve got to say (in person and online). But – with Mercury still in retrograde mode (until February 11) take care in the way you communicate.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Venus shifts into your social networking zone so strive to boost your presence. Talk, text, tweet and post away – the world is waiting to hear what you have to say. Work matters look more complicated though, as a bossy colleague tries to hurry you up.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] A bored twin is a recipe for trouble! So try new activities or extend your peer group to include an interesting crowd. Your mind’s jam-packed with ideas but just because you’ve thought (and talked) about them doesn’t mean you’ve actually put them into practice.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Cancers are sometimes too cautious and risk-adverse. With Venus, Mars and Neptune all activating your adventure/aspirations zone, it’s time to leave your comfort zone and pursue a dream. The stars also encourage you to talk about your goals.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] With Mercury reversing through your relationship zone (until February 11) don’t make assumptions about others. You know exactly what you want, but don’t expect mind-readers. If you fail to tell them what you require, then how can they please you?

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] You can become so obsessed with details that you lose sight of the big picture. The Mercury/ Uranus link up helps you appreciate a more inventive approach. But Mercury is retro in your wellbeing and work zone, so expect health hitches or computer glitches.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Saturn squares Venus (your ruler) this week, so other people will be emotionally reserved – and you’ll feel somewhat shy and retiring. With Venus shifting into your wellbeing zone (until February 20) it’s time to choose a diet and exercise plan that you actually enjoy.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Some Scorpios will experience financial problems, as Venus squares Saturn. Time to be careful with cash and cautious with credit, as you are forced to dip into savings or reboot your budget. Under the influence of retrograde Mercury, strive to be tactful with family members.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Is someone stirring you up by passing on scandalous second-hand news? Blame it on Mercury reversing through your communication zone. Steer clear of garrulous gossip plus avoid over-reacting when a frustrated family member pushes your emotional buttons.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] With Saturn (your ruling planet) moving slowly through your solitude zone, you can end up being your own worst enemy – full of self-doubt and harsh self-criticism. Don’t waste time stewing. Face your fears, learn more about yourself, and then move on.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Venus visits your money zone (until February 20) which often coincides with financial luck and a boost to cash flow. But, with Saturn squaring Venus, any gains could be gobbled up by bills and increasing expenses. So plan accordingly, and don’t fritter good fortune away.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] You’re in the mood to nurture yourself with some of life’s little luxuries, as Venus shifts into your sign (until February 20). Whether it’s gourmet food, fine wine or prestige personal-care products, you’re keen to pamper your Piscean self to the max.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

Earth to surfers, earth to surfers. Me thinks there might be some small fun waves a comin’! Okay, off shore winds are predicted and a jump in swell so it looks like it all could be on offer. My suggestion is go find some waves away from the crowds. Tides are looking good. Anyway, nothing epic but should be fun. Of course my disclaimer is I am relying on the weather predictions that only get it right 50 per cent of the time. Now, if anyone saw me on a boogie board please keep it to yourself. Next thing I’ll be on a stand up!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Lure casters working snags up Petrie and Coolum Creeks are returning mangrove jack, bream and flathead. There’s quality whiting on beach worms, using small hooks in Cotton Tree, and the Pincushion area. You’ll find mud crabs around Bli Bli Islands, and there’s trevally along the northern side of Maroochy River near the Twin Waters weir. SURF: You can get tailor at Pincushion just after dark (with some around 2 kilos) with pillies the best bait. Jew has been taken from Mudjimba to Kawana, again pillies are the best baits. You’ll get whiting and dart in the low tide gutters along Maroochy Beach using worms and pippies. OFFSHORE: There’s spotted and Spanish mackerel from Caloundra to Currimundi but you need to be out there before dawn as they go off the feed when it gets hot. You’ll find sweetlip, parrot and moses perch at Murphy’s and the Outer Gneerings. FRESHWATER: I’m hearing reports from Bjelke Petersen and Boondooma of quality catches of golden perch, bass and jew taken on live shrimps, earthworms and deep diving lures that can work down from 15 to 20 feet.

You will never look back...
