o you ever wonder where your food comes from? I know for certain where we get our eggs – straight from under one of the hens in the chook house. That’s if our neighbourhood goanna hasn’t beaten me to it. We get our bananas from the farm across the road. I know, it’s pretty handy, especially when you have two young boys who are partial to a banana smoothie at a moment’s notice. But it’s not always easy to know where the food on your table comes from, but help is at hand. An increasing number of farmers on the Sunshine Coast are bypassing the major retailers (most don’t have a choice) to sell directly to the public at farmers’ markets. This week My Weekly Preview takes a look at family farms, and how they are f nding new ways to compete with the giants of the industry. In this week’s edition, we also take you on an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at disaster management on the Sunshine Coast, and there’s a great story on a dance instructor who is helping older people get back on their feet. We have all the glamour and glitz from the Oscars, a road trip to a town with one of the coolest ‘old school’ pubs in the country, and as always there’s plenty of property for whether you are buying, selling or just wanting to have a sticky beak.

The real fresh food people

Three millennia ago a young shepherd armed with little more than a sling, f ve stones and the cocksureness of youth, strode into a valley to face a giant. And we all know how that story ends. In the modern world it doesn’t always turn out that way, but don’t tell that to Sunshine Coast lettuce farmer Craig Hubbard. In this version of the classic, he is David, one of many, who are working away on the Sunshine Coast trying to make a living off the land, and using many of the same methods common to the biblical times in which the original story was set. It’s not diff cult to cast the towering threat. By any measure, Coles and Woolworths are behemoths. Our two biggest retailers control about 80 per cent of Australia’s grocery market; in the UK the big guys control 48 per cent and in the US it’s just 24 per cent. The dominance is so complete it’s diff cult to comprehend, but you can think of it this way: on average every Australian man, woman and child spends $100 a week on food, alcohol, hardware or petrol with Colesworth – the less than affectionate name to bundle the two retail giants together.

To feed that appetite, the big two retailers usually rely on big suppliers, which leaves small growers looking at other ways to survive.
AN AVERAGE DAY
Hubbard wakes at 4am most mornings and by 5am he’s hard at it, weeding, mulching, and harvesting

Consumers want their fresh produce tasty, clean, affordable and free from chemicals and contamination. The best way to get it is to buy locally, from farmers who have their hearts and hands planted f rmly in the fertile Sunshine Coast soil.
and work through to midday, adding another chore along the way – processing the harvest; washing, cutting, removing bad leaves, packing into boxes in readiness for the markets or home deliveries. After lunch, Hubbard goes to the off ce on the farm and begins the second part of his day, organising like-minded farmers into a co-

before it gets too hot. He’s joined by his partner Jemma and a dozen other workers at the Shambhala Farm in Doonan. It’s the pictureperfect farm you used to see in fairytale books when you were a kid – 10 acres of green f elds, birds slicing through the skies, and a rope swing hanging from a tree. At six they rest and share a communal breakfast, usually a green smoothie or juice, and freshly baked bread. They go back to the f elds
THE GOLIATHS • Coles and Woolworths control 80 per cent of the grocery market. • In the US the top two grocers control just 24 per cent of the market. • On average every man, woman and child spends $100 a week at Coles and Woolworths or their aff liates. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

“You start with the good stuff. It starts here and ends here,” Hubbard says. The good stuff is the organic compost lying in a pile at his feet which looks no bigger than a trailer load of top soil for a suburban backyard. It will fertilise 2.5 acres. The pile includes leftovers from previous crops, f sh heads and spanner crabs from a local f shmonger, manure, wood chips, hay, water and time. It heats up for three months, is turned and then is given another three months. “A billion micro-organisms in a teaspoon – a universe in the cup of your hand. When you add this to

transplanted to a f eld, where after a couple of months they are harvested by hand. The result is a lettuce which is chemical-free, and fresher than the one you’ll f nd in the big supermarkets – and for about the same price. Importantly, its soil will be nearly as rich as when it started.

the soil, you don’t need chemicals to artif cially create the right conditions to grow crops. This is not a new technique – it’s tapping into millennia-old traditions which mimic nature,” he says. operative. So far he has up to 36 locals who sell their goods under the banner of Shambhala Farm. He f nds out what they have and tells them what the co-operative needs. After dinner with his family, including seven year-old Isaiah, and Kaia who is f ve, he f nds time to read, mainly research, and retires by nine in readiness to start all over again. “They’re pretty big days, and it’s really taken a good team around us to make sure we don’t lose focus and give up on it,” Hubbard says. The hard work and proximity to his market means when a lettuce is picked on his farm in the morning, it can be in the salad bowl of one of his home delivery customers that night, as little as six hours from paddock to plate. If the same lettuce is taken to a farmer’s market it may take 24 hours. It’s the advantage of a short supply chain, which is important because every hour out of the ground reduces the nutrients, taste, and shelf-life. But there’s a lot of work to be done before you get to pick it.
many large farms. Pesticides and herbicides are not used. A diversity of crops achieves a similar result, and Hubbard grows more than 40 different varieties of vegetables in the space most big farms would allocate to just one crop. The timeframe to grow a lettuce at Shambhala Farm is similar to the large scale enterprises that feed the grocery giants, but its more labour intensive. Seeds are individually planted, grown into seedlings, given a couple of weeks in a greenhouse, sun hardened for a week and then

FIGHTING BACK
If Craig Hubbard is David, Shane Stanley is his sling. He provides farmers with the weapon to f ght back. Twelve years ago he set up the f rst farmers’ market on the Sunshine Coast in Noosa. It worked on a simple principle: farmers pay a nominal fee for a stall and keep all the proceeds of sales. It started as a monthly market, but within two years, it was weekly and had 6000 customers.
“It’s only picked the day of, the morning of, the day before, and that’s what drove the popularity,” says Stanley. “It was really good quality produce and the money was going to the right people.” Since then, he has opened more farmers’ markets; one in Kawana and another in Townsville. His next farmers’ market will open in Maroochydore’s Big Top at Easter. It will take the concept to a whole new level – more than 100 farmers, all the stalls under cover and open three days a week. “It’s awesome, because when I f rst met them they [farmers] were all broke, driving crappy old utes that were falling apart. What we did is change that around.” Stanley says it’s about growing good food and getting it to the consumers within a day or two – not weeks or months like some of the fruit and vegies you’ll buy in the big supermarkets. “Sometimes it (the fruit and vegies in big supermarkets) can go through 14 pairs of hands. It’s ridiculous.” And the consumer is not the only loser. “Say there’s a lettuce there for three dollars, they [the farmers] may get f fty cents if they are fortunate.” continued over>

Stanley says IGA is one chain that is trying to buy local and is working with farmers’ markets to increase the percentage of food it sources locally. He’s working with local stores to try and shorten that supply chain so the retailer makes money and the farmer gets a fair share. My Weekly Preview contacted Woolworths and Coles for comment. Neither could say what percentage of their fruit and vegies sold on the Sunshine Coast were sourced from this region. Woolworths named a handful of fruit and vegetables that are sourced when in season, but couldn’t say how much that was compared to food sourced from other regions. Coles named two suppliers it thought were locals, but neither are based on the Sunshine Coast. Stanley, whose f rst job as a kid was working for Woolies, says he doesn’t want to bring down the retail giants – he would just like them to behave a bit better.

HOPE
There is a precedent. Three years ago Woolworths’ namesake (although no relation) in South Africa increased its market share after forcing its suppliers to adopt the farming practices espoused by the recognised leader in the biological approach, Graham Sait, who is based on the Sunshine Coast. The Yandina local believes the
Is Constant Joint Pain Disturbing Sleep and Restricting your lifestyle? Tired of taking Pain Killers? It may be a symptom of a disease your doctor can’t diagnose. Tired of taking pain killers and anti-inf ammatories? Is joint pain stopping you from doing the activities you used to love, or worse, is it killing you to do simple tasks? Research has proven that inf ammation can be the driver of chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, but where is the inf ammation coming from, and why is it happening to you?
key to successful farming is more humus – building the amount of organic matter in the soil. This creates more nutritious, diseaseresistant plants which increases the prof tability for farmers and reduces the need for chemicals. When this approach was introduced in South Africa it quickly caught the attention of competitors. “They’ve had to play catch-up
because [South Africa’s] Woolworths has got the food with the forgotten f avours and they’re picking up a greater percentage of the market because of that,” Sait says. Woolworths in Australia and Coles may have wished they had followed this lead as well, if only to avoid some of the negative headlines that have dogged them in recent years, including one chain being caught advertising bread as freshly baked despite it being made in another country, and apples being sold as ‘spring’ fruit despite being picked months earlier. For Shane Stanley, the South Africa experience gives him hope the farming practices he’s been advocating for more than a decade may not always stay on the margins of Australian agriculture. “It’s not something [growing food locally and sustainably] we should say ‘isn’t this great, trendy and f uffy’. No. We have to make it mainstream, we have to make it the way we do it. That’s the goal.”

Does your current f nancial adviser really give you the best advice tailored specif cally to your situation?
Don’t accept pain as normal, there is something that can be done about it. With over 10,000 research papers written about it, this hidden epidemic is referred to as “the disease your doctor can’t diagnose” with good reason. Increased Intestinal Permeability or Leaky Gut, is a condition where toxic food particles, environmental chemicals or pollutants, and bacterial waste leak through your digestive tract and enter your blood stream. Once your immune system is triggered, your body produces a hormone, cortisol, which drives your immune system into action, promoting inf ammation and beginning the development of chronic disease. It is suggested that more than 100 autoimmune diseases all begin with leaky gut. While traditional medications may provide you with temporary relief of your symptoms, these often come with side effects and can lead to further health complications. It’s only through treating the root cause that you can look forward to a positive pain free lifestyle. Results can be achieved quickly with correct investigation and treatment. Specif c testing can be ordered to identify offending foods, and types of bacterial, viral or fungal infection. Educating you on eating a diet that decreases inf ammation, encourages weight loss if needed, is highly nutrient rich, and will leave you feeling full and satisf ed, is the f rst step. You have a choice. Change the path of your life forever. If you’d like to know more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or visit www.advancedwellness.com.au

Helping the elderly experience the joy of dance Words: Angela Takats
T
here have been many memorable moments in Gail Hewton’s career as a dance teacher, but some have pulled at her heart strings more than others. “I was slow-waltzing with an elderly woman in a retirement village who had only just got back on her feet after breaking her thigh, Hewton says. “I looked up and saw tears in her eyes. She said she never imagined she’d ever waltz again. She was so happy. It would be hard to f nd anyone on the Sunshine Coast who loves to dance more than Hewton. She has more than 30 years of professional experience as a dancer, teacher, choreographer, director and creative producer. Hewton began teaching movement classes in Brisbane when she was 19. She was one of the pioneers of dance education in Queensland – helping with the development of a curriculum that is now standard across the state. She has worked as a choreographer for Expressions Dance Company, Ballet Theatre of Queensland and Queensland Dance School of Excellence – and she has been a dance lecturer at Queensland University of Technology. “About f ve years ago I volunteered at an aged care facility, she says. “Every Wednesday afternoon they had me play cards or bingo with residents. “While it was fun, social and kept their brains active, I thought ‘there’s got to be more for older
people than cards and bingo’ and wished I could do some dance with them but I lacked the conf dence to start something as I’d never worked with that demographic before. Soon after, an opportunity came up to attend an introductory teacher training working in Dance for Parkinson’s Disease, run by visiting American David Leventhal and Hewton leapt at the chance. It led to her starting RIPE (Repress Immobility with Pleasurable Exercise) dance classes for people in aged care and for those living independently with motor and/or mobility classes, which she
I looked up and saw tears in her eyes. She said she never imagined she’d ever waltz again. She was so happy runs in Noosa and Gympie. The classes are suitable for those with Parkinson’s but also anyone recovering from a stroke, who suffers from arthritis or who has balance issues. “My classes are a combination of seated and standing – assisted and unassisted. “Sometimes they’ll lean on their walkers or the carers will hold their hands to help with balance. It is not just about the physical – but also
the mental and emotional benef ts of being in a social setting with music and others, Hewton says. Due to each member of the group having different abilities, Hewton often has to change the movements and routine during her classes. She says there’s no such thing as a standard class. “Some groups are better at standing – so I’ll do more of that. Others will want to take things slower. The good thing is that I have an app on my iPad, which allows me to slow down a track of music depending on the ability of the group, she says. With an age range of 40 to 90 years, it seems Hewton’s dance classes are proof that you’re never too old to shake your bootie. She says it’s amazing how a piece of music can bring someone’s body ‘to
life’ despite their physical limitations. She also likes to use props – such as top hats – to add an element of fun to each class. “You have to remember that many of the elderly used to go to their local hall for social dances in their youth. That was how they’d spend their Saturday nights. So the class brings back memories for them. “I always choose music that will resonate with participants and it’s wonderful to see their smiling faces when the song starts, she says. Hewton says there’s something very liberating about moving your body – even if it’s seated on a chair – to a piece of music. And for those with Parkinson’s she says the beat of the song can help them ‘unfreeze’ their limbs. “The greatest gift I can give them is the joy of dance.

Who ya gonna call? A behind-the-scenes look at disaster management When a potential disaster like Cyclone Marcia threatens, these are the people who spring into action. By Richard O’Leary. 4.57pm Wednesday February 18, 2015
responsible for managing the event until it is f nished, Council CEO John Knaggs, two council disaster management staff and representatives from all the emergency services. There are a couple of dozen others who stand in the cramped quarters. Between them they will guide the region through the event over the coming days, along with hundreds of staff. They work as a team, while at the same time being responsible for their own areas of expertise. A giant screen with bright blues and reds displays the progress of Cyclone Marcia, and if that’s not reminder enough, the f oor to ceiling windows are being pelted with rain as the brief ng gets underway. Ryan, whose day to day role is the Director of Council’s Infrastructure Services begins. “We are anticipating a four-day response, 24/7. We’re already starting to think about recovery in that this is looking like it could be, and let’s hope it’s not, similar to Tropical Cyclone Oswald, and we know what that did. We’re preparing for a large scale event.” His brief ng is short, as are the others. The SES has received 166 call outs – 90 have been resolved. Police have 98 staff on the ground – there’ll be 58 out tonight, and all off cers have been briefed.
A chatter of electronic beeps on mobile phones across the Sunshine Coast signal the start of the off cial response to the potentially serious weather event bearing down on the region. The text message reads: “LDMG (Local Disaster Management Group) is now at LEAN FORWARD status.” That’s disaster speak for start preparing, get your resources ready, amend rosters, cancel leave and source equipment. Cyclone Marcia is expected to hit hundreds of kilometres to the north, but the Sunshine Coast is one of many regions expected to suffer collateral damage, in particular, heavy rainfall and f ooding.
8.02am Thursday February 19, 2015 “Be advised LDMG is now at STANDUP status as at 0800.” It’s on. Management of the event is underway, staff are deployed, the control centre is open.

6am Friday February 20, 2015 People on the Sunshine Coast wake to heavy rain. There have been reports of hundreds of millimetres across the Sunshine Coast. People avoid going to work, many students stay home from school and there are less cars on the road.
10:53am Friday February 20, 2015 The LDMG’s control room is set up in the council’s large committee room in Nambour. It has the low hum of a dozen conversations. The space has been equipped for high volume internet and phone traff c. More than 20 people sit at computers, most with an ear to a phone. Information is pouring in from council staff in the f eld and call centres (thousands of calls will be received over the course of the weather event), intelligence is gathered from emergency services, websites are being monitored. The group captures all of it like a gutter funnelling rain from a roof. An entire wall is f lled with the

11.03am Friday February 20, 2015 Mayor Mark Jamieson chairs the second brief ng in the Nambour council chambers. He asks each representative to share, including half-a-dozen calling in from around the region. Co-ordinator Ryan provides an overview. “Cyclone Marcia has been elevated to a Category 5, and is crossing the coast as we speak. Obviously a very big system and quite erratic. Tracking still showing its travelling south over the next 48 hours. We are not out of the woods, indeed we may be at the start of a very big incident.” Council’s hydrology expert Geoff Newell rattles off the latest rainfall f gures: 50 mil in the last

There are discrepancies between the BOM (Bureau of Meteorology) forecast and what’s been received… we’ve received a lot more – 300 mil expected over the next 48 hours… the upper limit of the forecast is 500 mil.” The room is told 660 homes are without power, 26 sewage pumps have overf owed, including three in recreational areas. Thirty-seven roads are closed.
12.36pm Friday February 20, 2015
3am Saturday February 21, 2015
Shortly after the second brief ng, the Mayor holds a media conference. You know it’s wet when half the journos turn up in gum boots, including one in a fetching pair adorned with leopard print. The Mayor calls on the public to stay off the roads if possible: “We’d rather be protecting people who really need it rather than risk life and limb to rescue people who have been foolish”. The message is reinforced by the incessant rain pelting the windows of the building. The journalist with the leopard print gum boots asks whether this weather event could end up being catastrophic. The Mayor says it could. To punctuate the point the intensity of the downpour lifts another level. If it was bucketing down before, it’s dropping dump trucks now.
The hydrologist says hundreds of millimetres of rain are about to be dumped on the Coast, starting in just a couple of hours. The acting co-ordinator, room manager and communication advisor strategise a game plan so the public is ready.
5am Saturday February 21, 2015 The prediction is spot on. What is left of the cyclone starts to pass over the Sunshine Coast. The heavy downpours start at f rst light, if dawn under grey skies still counts. It settles in for three hours and many roads f nally succumb – at the peak there are 77 which have been cut off. When the rain stops, the water starts to drain away, as if someone has pulled the plug out of the bath, and the number of closed roads starts to fall. By the afternoon the worst is over and the LDMG looks to hand over for the recovery stage. Road crews are still assessing the damage, repairing what they can and opening roads when possible.
9.06pm Friday February 20, 2015 There’s about a dozen people working from 6pm to 6am. Fourteen roads are cut. Steve Linnane is the acting co-ordinator for the night. “We’ve had a fair amount of rain today and the advice we are getting is that we’re going to have a break in the severe weather, and it will pick up again tomorrow.”
3.35pm Saturday February 21, 2015 The trill of text messages marks the approaching end of the event: “Please be advised that as of 5pm, the LDMG will be scaling back to ALERT level.”
Meet Shadow and Dodger. These two dogs are in a tough situation – they grew up together and they need to be homed together. Why we want to be a part of your home: We were taken to the pound by our previous owners who could not keep us due to a rental crisis and the property owners would not allow us to be there. It was very sad for us in the pound and we really need someone to love and care for both of us forever. We will love you heaps in return. We are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. The adoption fee for both of us is $400 for the right home. Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge is non-profit, non-euthanising and has been rescuing animals for more than 35 years. Find out how to adopt a pet or make a donation at sippycreek.com.au or facebook.com/ sunshinecoastanimalrefuge, or visit the refuge at 28 Sippy Creek Road, Tanawha.
Shadow male Labrador cross 3 and a half years What I love to do most is: go for walks and be with my best buddy Dodger the staffy, I really need his guidance, and am not happy without him around. What you should know about me: I am a bit timid and not keen on some men at f rst. However, once I get to know you, you will have a friend for life. Dodger, my staffy friend helps me to be conf dent.

This month marks the 25th anniversary of Adobe’s popular design software, Photoshop. Developed by brothers Thomas and John Knoll, Photoshop has developed over the years to become one of the world’s most dominant photo and image design tools and is used by millions of people around the globe. The original inspiration was to create special effects in movies, as well as manipulate photos. Today it is used by photographers and graphic designers, it is used in the publishing industry and advertising, in web design, fashion, medicine, law enforcement and in video games to name a few. And with the advancement of digital cameras, it is increasingly found in homes.

< Have a cold one at the historic Corones Hotel, Charleville hours, casting a pungent aroma, which ironically leaves your hair fragrance-free and soft. Water is a recurring theme in this outback town and despite how dry the landscape looks, there’re plenty of reminders that the weather is volatile in the west. The Warrego River is known to inundate Charleville in the blink of an eye. One of the best ways to acquaint yourself with the town is to meander along the Warrego River walk, which takes you along the banks of the river, across the f ood plains and through channels. Time your walk for sunset to soak up all the colours of the outback from the viewing deck. The town centre is a history-buff’s dream, with old pubs on every corner. Hotel Charleville f res up on a Saturday afternoon with weekly guinea pig races. Fed a diet of carrot and corn pre-race, the guinea pigs move at pace down a custom-made race track to a f red-up crowd. You can hold your fascinators and form guides for this day at the track, but you’ll want to bring a competitive attitude to cheer on your guinea pig of choice. From Hotel Charleville, wander a block or so to the iconic Hotel Corones for a coldie. Heritage listing saved this pub from destruction and its magnif cent bar is currently being restored to its former glory. After the sun sets, the sky lights up and with so little artif cial light or pollution in the outback you get a clear view of the stars. Charleville Cosmos Centre is an astronomer’s dream and every night the roof rolls back to expose three Meade telescopes which can spot a globular cluster light-years away. The sky-guides explain what you

ue the Pet Shop Boys and get ready to go west. Central mid-west that is, to the town of Charleville, about 750 kilometres west of Brisbane, on the banks of the Warrego River. Geographically speaking, Charleville is at the centre of the outback universe, standing at the crossroads of the Mitchell and Warrego Highways, the two arteries that feed the heart of western Queensland. Charleville is a comfortable drive
from Longreach, Roma and Quilpie, and enroute to Birdsville, making the town a convenient base for an outback adventure and a popular stopover on the way to the iconic Birdsville races in September. There’s no shortage of tourists who take advantage of Charleville’s central location. From grey nomads to young families, chasing the elusive mixture of hospitality and history that’s so abundant in Queensland’s outback. As far as regional towns go,
Charleville makes a great f rst impression. The dirt is outback red, the horizon never-ending and the town centre is charming. Much of the town’s charm can be put down to post-war wool prosperity, which showered Charleville in infrastructure, amenities and architecture. When the shearers moved onto greener pastures, they left behind a picture-postcard town for the 3,500 locals who call Charleville home. But Charleville is so much more than a pretty facade – it’s steeped in history, and not just shearing history. Charleville’s inf uence stretches far, with connections to Queensland Rail, Qantas, The Royal Flying Doctor Service, World War One, f lled with museums and attractions that tell this story. Consider this town a history book laid open for discovery. Depending how long you have to spend in Charleville, there’s accommodation to suit your stay, with plenty of motels, cabins, caravan parks and camp sites to choose from. You might be surprised by the sulphuric water, which runs hot 24

Even with the naked eye, prepare to be blown away by the brightness of the night sky. By day, it’s worth setting aside an hour to discover the nearby Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Centre. The interactive displays show how the RFDS grew from its humble beginnings in Cloncurry in 1928. Even though the distances are long in the outback, be sure to make the most of your central location and visit Cunnamulla and Eulo, 200 kilometres south of Charleville. The scenery is quite different from Charleville and the red dirt gradually turns into sun-kissed grass. Eulo’s Artesian mud baths are highly praised for their age-defying and rejuvenating qualities. The artesian mud in this area is estimated to be 20,000 years old, rich with silica, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron and zinc, the combination of which leaves your skin feeling tighter and silkier.

Death penalty The controversy over the death sentences of Bali Nine duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukamaran has focused attention on capital punishment – and it’s more common than you may think. 1. There were 4002 people executed in 2014 according to the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty. 2. Ninety countries and two territories still have the death penalty. 3. It’s estimated China executed 3000 people, mostly by f ring squads. 4. Iran executed 721 people, mostly by hanging. 5. Saudi Arabia beheaded 87 people. In Saudi Arabia you can be executed for homosexuality, sorcery and apostasy (rejection of religious belief). 6. Iraq executed 60 people, mostly by hanging. 7. The United States is the only Western nation in the top f ve – it executed 35 people. 8. Indonesia didn’t have any executions last year, but killed six people by f ring squad last month. 9. In Indonesia, 16 offences can attract the death penalty. They can be narrowed to three broad categories: murder, terrorism and drug traff cking. 10. Firing squads in Indonesia include 12 executioners, who are given a single bullet each and told to aim for the heart. Three bullets are live, nine are blanks.

Investing in resource companies: Rio Tinto vs BHP
Justin Scattini is from Ord Minnett in Buderim
S
ubstantial falls in a range of commodity prices over the last year have affected the share prices of resource companies. While it is difficult to say that prices for commodities, such as iron ore and oil, have reached their nadirs, it is more reasonable to assume that any declines will be more gradual from this point. With this in mind, many investors are considering accumulating or adding to positions in resource companies, which includes the larger, diversified miners such as BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto. It’s important to remember that these companies are among the
lowest cost producers within their f elds and therefore remain prof table, despite the weak pricing environment. Operationally, they are also solid, as conf rmed by their most recent quarterly production results. Rio Tinto’s shipments of iron ore, its primary commodity, were also outstanding. A record 311 million tonnes for 2014 exceeded the nameplate capacity of 290 million tonnes. The expansion of infrastructure to 360 million tonnes per annum is 80 per cent complete, and on track for completion in the current half. BHP reported relatively strong output across its key pillars of iron ore, petroleum, copper and coal, with strong Pilbara iron ore sales of 248 million tonnes in 2014 a highlight. However, the company announced a major change to the growth outlook for its American onshore gas projects. This is hardly surprising given the precipitous fall in energy prices.
BHP plans to reduce its rig count from 26 to 16 by the end of this f nancial year – a 40 per cent drop – in response to lower prices. With contractor rates also falling, we believe this will see capital expenditure next year fall to around $2.56 billion (from about $4.4 billion this year). An impairment charge of $320 million was recorded for American oil assets, and a further multi-billion impairment for assets is expected in the next six months. Between the two companies, our preference sits with Rio Tinto as it offers better valuation metrics compared with BHP and fewer headwinds to its cash-f ow generating ability. On the basis of our price targets of $71 and $31 respectively, Rio Tinto offers greater return potential. Rio Tinto has announced a multi-billion dollar capital management initiative, $1.9 billion buyback off the UKlisted stock and $640 million off market buyback from local investors.
On the other hand, BHP is in a more challenging period, as its progressive dividend policy means it could be faced with dividend payout ratios temporarily rising above 100 per cent, with net debt increasing. Beer to die for TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe from 92.7 MIX FM’S Todd and Sami gives his opinion on the best brews of the week. I’ve always thought there’s really only two numbers you need in your contact list on your phone: your local pizza shop and Batman. I used to think I’d like Bear Grylls’ digits too, but just last week it was revealed the Bear is up for a little cannibalism in order to survive. He reckons if he had to eat a human in order to live, well he would. I always knew once you started drinking your own urine it was only a matter of time before you started consuming people. But I digress. More recently I’m thinking we need to make space in our contacts for the phone number of the Stone and Wood brewing company in Byron Bay. Now I know I’ve always said that when the zombie apocalypse strikes we all need to high tail it to Fraser Island. It’s the safest place to be, as according to legend, zombies can’t swim. Having said that we still have to contend with dingoes, German tourists and bogans in hotted up Nissan Navaras. But back to the Stone and Wood crew. This is the place I’m planning on heading to, to bunker down with the fam when the f t hits the shan and the dead begin to roam the Coast. This amazing brewing operation will sustain us for eternity I reckon.
I don’t know whose running the show down there, but he/she is a creative genius. Just when I thought you couldn’t get any better than the S&W Pacif c Ale, I wrap my laughing gear around the Stone and Wood Jasper Ale. It’s even better than its bro. Created by brewing masters who should be worshipped as demi-gods this little ripper is brewed with a blend of pale and crystal malts and pours a deep red, ref ecting the red volcanic soil of the Byron hinterland. It has a rich malt character combined with a spicy hops bitterness that makes this one of the most perfect beers I’ve ever met. I swear to you it’s a party in your mouth and believe me, you better have the cops on standby ‘coz things could get Tommy Lee-rowdy! I proudly give the Stone and Wood Jasper Ale 4.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

Both models offer stunning mid-engine proportions, near-perfect weight distribution and each draws inspiration from the brand’s proud racing heritage to combine design and technology for maximum performance. The Alfa Romeo 4C is inspired by the century-old tradition of Alfa Romeo and projects the brand’s values for the future: Italian style, performance and engineering excellence and maximum driving satisfaction. The 4C name recalls Alfa Romeo’s great sporting tradition – the acronyms 8C and 6C in the 1930s and 1940s distinguished racing and road cars f tted with powerful eight and six cylinder engines. The 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C model’s designation continues this tradition. The engine is the beating heart of any Alfa Romeo, and for the 4C, it beats to a new 1750cc direct-injection, all-aluminium engine. It is teamed with a paddle-shifting Alfa TCT twin-clutch transmission, which has been specif cally tuned for the 4C. The 4C features the brand’s innovative Alfa DNA selector with Race mode – enabling the driver to optimise the right level of performance through four modes.
Ice and snow no match for Land Rover Land Rover has teamed up with Airstream on an adventure to the Arctic Circle to demonstrate the capabilities of the new Range Rover Sport Hybrid. The world’s f rst premium diesel hybrid towed the 2.5 tonne travel trailer about 4000 kilometres to Land Rover’s cold-weather test centre in Sweden and on to the Arctic Circle. The car towed the 13.1 metre-long rig through some of the worst winter weather
Scandinavia has experienced. Gales, record snow depths and freak icy road conditions tested crew, car and trailer to the extreme. The car demonstrated its towing prowess, maintaining stability under gale force side winds. Off-road it repeatedly pulled the trailer through snowy and icy hills and along forest tracks without fuss.

Investment success
Get educated before joining the ranks of property investor.
wealth from riskier investments, but the lower risk and volatility of property make it attractive. As a property investor, you can also draw a rental income plus gain from capital growth.
TAX ADVANTAGES When there is income involved, the Australian Tax Off ce isn’t far away, but owning property does have tax advantages, too. Interest on your loan repayments and many expenses related to owning property are tax deductible.
DRAWBACKS
The dream of owning property is one entrenched in our national identity, so it makes sense many of us see property investment as, well, safe as houses. Because of lack of information or a fear of the unknown, many mum and dad investors wary of other forms of investment will turn to property. As a tangible asset, it’s an attractive option.
There are a few cons as well as pros to be aware of. Your rental income might not cover the mortgage, so you’ll need to ensure another income source to pay the difference. Property is also subject to changes in interest rates, though of course you can f x your loan for a certain period. If you can’t rent your property you’ll have to cover the costs until you f nd a tenant, and if you need access to cash, you can’t just sell part of the property. There are also lots of costs involved with buying and selling property, such as legal and real estate agents’ fees and stamp duty.
IS IT LOW RISK?
PLAN AND RESEARCH
Because property isn’t easily bought and sold, it isn’t as volatile as other investments, where an investor’s knee-jerk reactions to market conditions can make them very speculative. You can certainly create more
Sit down and develop an investment strategy. Don’t just buy a property and hope you get lucky. Do your research into the rental demand of the suburb you are buying in, and check into council and
WHY PROPERTY?
development plans for the street and suburb you’re interested in. These could impact on your property in a positive or negative way.
WHAT TO BUY So what type of property should you buy, and where? A big mistake new investors make is choosing an investment property for the same reason that they chose their own home. Emotional reasons such as a home is near the primary school you went to, or you just love the carpet, are the wrong reasons to invest, as are speculative reasons, such as a developer might build a shopping centre nearby in 20 years. Look for properties that are near schools, shops and transport – the things renters will be after. Features such as a double garage or second bathroom are also desirable for tenants. A house that could appeal to a range of renters is always sound, and a home that requires little maintenance is important. Units can be more appealing than houses because they are easier to maintain but beware of body corporate fees – can you afford $2000, $5000 or even $10,000 a year?
COSTS OF BUYING PROPERTY Buying, selling and owning a property can incur many costs. On the plus side, these costs mean property isn’t easily bought and sold, making it a lot less volatile than, say, shares. But here are a few costs Continued >

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Are you ready to rumble rams? The Jupiter/Uranus trine sends a lucky opportunity your way but you’ll have to grab it in a split-second decision… your speciality! The stars also increase your energy levels, boost your impulsive side and amp up your impatience.
TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Resist the urge to coast along on your beautiful bovine behind this week bulls. The stars encourage being unusually spontaneous, especially at home. Perhaps you could throw a surprise party or play gracious host to some unexpected guests?
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] With Jupiter and Uranus spurring you on, it’s a terrific time to tap into your inner Gemini genius! Your mind’s buzzing with creative and innovative ideas as you talk, text, tweet, travel or study up a storm. You’re keen to broaden your mental horizons.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] You’re inclined to become obsessed with other people’s business this week. But here’s the paradox… the more you try to control others, the more out-of-control you’ll feel. Jupiter and Uranus encourage you to concentrate on your own affairs.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Jupiter is jumping through your sign, and this week it trines Uranus which makes for awesome opportunities. But can you capitalise on good fortune when it comes along? Confidence is the rocket fuel that will propel you into exciting new territory.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] The full moon’s in Virgo, so your perfectionist streak swings into top gear and (in your eyes) it’s hard for you (or anyone else) to do things ‘properly’. If you’re smart you’ll lower your standards (just a little) and realise that perfection is an illusion.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Romantic relationships get a welcome shot in the arm from the Jupiter/Uranus trine, so there’s never been a better time to fix a marriage – or find a new love. (Don’t look in old places – be adventurous). Have you got a problem that’s too big to handle on your own?
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Your public life looks promising, as the Jupiter/Uranus trine revitalises your energy and enthusiasm for work projects, study or volunteer endeavours. But Pluto squares Venus mid-week, which draws out resentments, hidden obsessions or jealous behaviour.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Get set to embark on a magical carpet ride of good fortune and adventure, as Jupiter (your ruling planet) forms a fabulous trine with unconventional Uranus. Lady Luck is on your side as you throw caution to the wind and bravely grab good fortune when it comes along.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Capricorns can get stuck in a rut. Jupiter and Uranus urge you to be more adventurous, as you venture outside your comfort zone. And do you feel torn between allowing a loved one more freedom, and holding them too close? You have to give them plenty of space.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] The Jupiter/Uranus trine helps you channel your unique talents and express yourself. For inspiration, look to avant-garde Aquarians like Mozart, James Dean, Bob Marley and Yoko Ono. It’s also a wonderful week to exercise your brain cells and learn something new.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] When it comes to career, study or volunteer work, strive to make alterations that allow you to be more creative and independent. Perhaps you can change your professional routine, enroll in a different course or initiate a challenging new project?

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water
Damn! I’m sure the organisers of the Quiksilver Pro starting on the Gold Coast on Friday would have been thinking of the lost opportunity of missing the Cyclone Marcia swell last week. Ouch. Still looks like there will be waves, although a bit smaller. Well I am still snowboarding in Canada and have racked up some huge days. My buddy Pete Turner even had time to bring a young girl back to life after she had a bad crash! The way he explained it was like he was ordering a coffee. One very fortunate young girl. Hope you score some fun waves.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Brightly coloured lures which show up in the dirty water are the only lures suitable at present. Flathead are taking plastics and live whiting along the Twin Waters bank of Maroochy River. Plenty of whiting are on the drift from Channel to Chambers Island using yabbies and worms. SURF: Most beaches are suffering from some erosion due to last week’s bad weather and big seas. However, this will create some new deep gutters, so have a look at low tide and come back when the tide rises for a variety of species. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, the dirty waterline will be the best place to fish offshore. It will be a search for fish, so your sounder will be your best mate for a while. Mackerel should still be around in numbers, but bait schools will be hard to find. FRESHWATER: Fish are proving hard to find, as the water levels have risen quickly and will take time to settle. Impoundments look a picture with the recent rains making everything green and lush on the banks. Any fish caught will be a bonus.
