ow we all have a hidden talent, although it’s fair to say some people are better at hiding it than others. This week My Weekly Preview delves deep to discover some talented locals whose day jobs provide the perfect cover for some simply remarkable skills. We’ll introduce you to a real estate agent who is also a well-respected artist, and a former vice-chancellor of the University of the Sunshine Coast who is an award-winning photographer. As for my hidden talent, I’ve buried it so deep, for the life of me I can no longer remember what it is. The talking point this week is Malcolm Turnbull, the man most people think, sooner or later, will push Tony Abbott off the Prime Ministerial perch. Also, we take a camel ride through the deserts of Dubai, road-test the new Inf nity, and catch-up with what the celebs are wearing. As always there’s plenty of property, including all the auctions and what’s sold on the Coast. Finally this week I’d like to pay tribute to Jess Ainscough who passed away last week. Jess worked at this magazine well before my time, but all my colleagues who worked with her, say she was a truly remarkable person. I look forward to talking with you again next week.

Secret call to create Hobbies enrich our lives and for most of us, provide a creative outlet that’s fun and relaxing. But some locals have an artistic f air they truly excel at and could even quit their day jobs for. Sam Walker chats to four talented locals about the passions that drive them. Main image: The Girl in the White Dress, by Loren Wimhurst

LOREN WIMHURST

It’s clear Loren Wimhurst dreams big and aims high. The Coast businesswoman has not only set her sites on entering the prestigious Archibald Prize in the next two years – but she’s planning to win it. It’s no minor goal, given Australia’s most notable portrait prize receives about 700 entries annually with many artists submitting work year after year before winning the prize. But Wimhurst has conf dence in her ability and a passion for her art to match it. She might be the head of the rapidly growing NEXT real estate group, but delve below the surface and there’s a creative heart beating beneath the business brain. Her love of drawing and painting started in childhood. “Friends would come over when I was f ve or six and I would just sit there and draw them,” she says. But her artistic talent is not limited to pencils and brushes – her career in fashion design started when she was still in primary school. “I started sewing when I was about f ve. I used to make all my own Barbie doll clothes. “When I was in primary school I became pretty good at swimwear and I would make bikinis for all my teachers and friends. “I peddled a living for myself through primary school and high school.” When her teenage friends were heading out to [ 10 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ M ARCH 6, 2015

parties, Wimhurst was at home sewing. “I was always a bit different,” she says with a laugh. She left school at 15 to start her own fashion label and says she won many fashion awards in her teens. She moved to Brisbane at 20 and freelanced as a fashion designer for other labels as well as working on her own label, until tragedy struck. “I lost my sister in a car accident, I lost my mother and then I got breast cancer. All this was when I was 27 and I just lost my artistic f air,” she says. “It’s only in recent years that I picked up my brushes again.” She does oil paintings in the impressionist style and paints on Sundays. “Every Sunday, religiously, from morning to night – eight hours. I love it. As for her inspiration? “It’s endless – I just see things all the time and I say look at that light – that’s amazing.” Her paintings vary in size but her largest to date is a landscape and is the size of a wall in a house. While the 49-year-old is passionate about her real estate business, she also has high hopes for her artistic career. “It was my goal in my 40s to be a famous artist but now it’s going to have to be in my 50s,” she says.

GARY DRINNAN

IMAGE: KEITH TARRIER

Being a cartoonist is not a big money-making venture for Gary Drinnan, although he is about to launch a clothing label featuring his designs. The Buderim father of three has been drawing cartoons since he was a kid. “Interest came from looking in my dad’s newspaper in the morning when he brought it home for breakfast. He was inspired by renowned Australian cartoonist, Jeff Hook, who included a f sh hook in all of his cartoons. “The artistic skill comes from my grandmother – she was a painter, he says. “I did oil paintings and acrylics as well but cartoons are my love more than anything. Drinnan, who owns a Touch Up Guys franchise and paints cars for a living, gets a kick out creating characters and providing a laugh for others. His Cartoon series, Mugsy’s Mobsters, was published in the Touch Up Guys monthly magazine until the publication went digital. But recently the father of three has created

PAUL THOMAS

Professor Paul Thomas has had a love of photography since he could hold a camera. “When I was about f ve or six I remember playing around with my parents’ Box Brownie, Thomas says. He was nine or 10 when he got his own camera and he’s been taking photos ever since. Thomas, well known on the Coast for his role as vice chancellor and president of the University of the Sunshine Coast from its inception in 1996 until his retirement in 2010, and more recently as chair of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Board, is perhaps less known for his photographic prowess. “My interest in photography has varied with time and circumstances, he says. “I was fascinated with it as a child, it was a means of additional income at one stage of my career in education and it has been a diversion and enjoyment at other times – often from the stresses of the leadership roles I’ve had, either from escaping to the solace of a toxic darkroom or now being absorbed with Photoshop and Lightroom. Thomas cut his teeth on photography in the days of f lm and darkrooms and has found the transition to digital challenging, largely because

he loved his darkroom so much. “At the end of a busy day, being vice chancellor of the university it was just wonderful to retreat to the darkness and the toxic smell of chemicals, he says. “Digital is very different. There’s a lot of scope for manipulation of photos. But he has mastered it well and held his own exhibition – Images of Vietnam, which ran for about six weeks at the University of the Sunshine Coast gallery in early 2013. “When I travel, which I’ve done quite a lot in my lifetime, and whenever I have the opportunity, I take photographs of things that are new to me, Thomas says. He has a background in sociology and admits to being very curious about new things around him, whether it is the people, the food, the clothing or the art and culture. At home, he particularly loves taking portraits. His work has been published in a variety of magazines and he has won a number of awards over the years. “I’ve always submitted to magazines and to prizes so that my work could stand scrutiny, so there was that achievement about it.

new characters for his Demon Seed label and is printing them himself on T-shirts and caps. He has previously operated a part-time screenprinting business, creating cartoons for bowling clubs, sports teams and other special orders but decided it was time to create his own label. “It’s not really about money for me. “I’m never going to make a million bucks being a cartoonist, Drinnan says. “It is more about the love of it than anything. “It’s more the kick of someone liking it enough that someone is actually going to buy that – someone’s wearing something that you made. “That’s the proudest thing for me in doing it. These days he doesn’t have any specif c source of inspiration. “It just comes into my head and I think about it for a while and put it down on paper. “When I was a kid, I got a lot of inspiration from comic books. I’ve always been fascinated by comic books – particularly Spiderman. “Demon Seed just came to mind because I saw a picture on the internet of an old WWI plane.

Thomas also worked as a wedding photographer in his early days as a lecturer, to augment his salary. From the darkroom to Lightroom, f lm to digital, weddings to portraits and travel, his photography has had many phases over the decades. “But my love of it has been enduring and lifelong, he says. continued over>

] DEAN STEWART

Real estate agent by day – musician by night – it’s a busy schedule but Dean Stewart wouldn’t have it any other way. In his heyday, Stewart and his band Saxuality spent a lot of time on the road, touring with, and backing, major national and international artists. His CV reads a bit like a Who’s Who of 80s music. Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Crowded House, John Farnham, Noiseworks, Status Quo, Russell Morris, Brian Cadd, Michael Crawford, Diesel, TATU – all artists he supported or played with. He spent a few years playing with John Swan, Jimmy Barnes’ older brother and more recently he has performed with Darren Percival from The Voice and Australian Idol winner Kate DeAraugo. He spent f ve or six years touring Australia as the sax player for the Australian Blues Brothers Revival, an off ciallyrecognised Blues Brothers show.

Stewart started playing music when he was about eight or nine, mastering the saxophone and guitar, and is also a vocalist. “If you do something you really love, it’s relaxing and it’s an outlet more than anything,” Stewart says. He loves to perform and says he can’t imagine ever giving up music. “When you get on stage it’s the best thing in the world. “You feel really accomplished while playing.” “If you’ve got goosebumps while playing, you can’t really beat that.” But with his real estate career taking off, he admits he has had to scale back the gigs, performing on average a few times a month at venues across the Coast. It’s a slower pace than his younger years, when he would work six days and play f ve nights a week, but he is happy with it. Stewart says he is not drawn to any one genre, enjoying a wide

variety of music. “I love my jazz, I love my classics, I’m a sucker for old soul music,” he says. The 47-year-old is not sure what originally drew him to music but says, “It was something that must have been in my blood”. “I’m the eldest of four brothers and we all play music. I started at school when I was young and never stopped.” Each year he travels to Los Angeles where he teams up with long-time friend and co-founder of Saxuality and funk band Hyporium Groove, Troy MacCubbin, to record and write for television and movie soundtracks and occasionally tour with MacCubbin. But he is constantly amazed at the quality of music on the Coast. “The amount of talent up here on the Sunshine is just unbelievable,” he says. “Spectacular musicians – world class.”

Album of 15 invented instruments is no pipe dream for Pollak Words: Leigh Robshaw

T

he stench of nictone pervaded Linsey Pollak’s leafy Maleny workshop for over a week. Renowned for his penchant for turning anything from a carrot to a rubber glove into an instrument, he spent half a day digging stinky stuff from the pipe’s bore to transform it into a clarinet. It was the f rst time he’d worked on a pipe, but it wasn’t just any pipe. It was a Norwegian smoking pipe dating back to 1850 that had once belonged to his great-great-grandfather, Jorgen Hermann Ludvigsen, a sea captain who died in Cuba of a plague-like illness. Pollak’s family had long ago lost touch with their maternal Norwegian lineage but in 2013, his cousins Knut and Magnus visited his sisters in Sydney and presented them with the treasured heirloom, giving their blessing for Linsey to do with it what he does best with cylindrical objects. It became the jewel in the crown of his recently launched 32nd album Mrs Curly and the Norwegian Smoking Pipe, which features 15 of Pollak’s invented single-reed instruments. Some are delightfully quirky, like the bicycle seat clarinet, watering can clarinet and feather duster clarinet. Then there’s Mr Curly, an electro-acoustic clarinet made from two metres of tightly-wound garden hose and Mrs Curly, a glass spiral clarinet with a contrabass pitch. The album documents just a fraction of the creative genius of the Sunshine Coast musician, composer and musical director. “There was a bit of trepidation working on the Norwegian smoking pipe,” says the quietly-spoken and articulate Pollak. “Normally you’re working with a piece of wood and you can make mistakes. The tuning depends on where you drill the tuning holes; if you make a mistake, you can do it again, but with a precious family heirloom you don’t have another opportunity.” Pollak writes in the album’s booklet that he “lucked out with the hole placement”. But after 40 years inventing and making his own instruments, composing and performing live shows, directing community workshops and art installations, the truth is he knew exactly what he was doing.

Mrs Curly (left) and the Norwegian smoking pipe

I create instruments from the unexpected and I f nd that’s a great analogy for other things in our lives “They [the Norwegian relatives] particularly love the sound of the pipe,” he says. “They’re particularly moved to have it turned into something that’s being played and loved and they even sent me a recording of the grandson of Jorgen Hermann. He is 91 and had it hanging on his wall for decades. The f rst thing I did was play a solo on the pipe and send an mp3 to them and they sent back an mp3 of the 91 year-old grandson listening to it and commenting.” Pollak studied classical clarinet for ten years from the age of 11 and while he continues to play traditional wind instruments such as the clarinet, saxophone, f ute and the Macedonian gaida, it’s the invented instruments he f nds most satisfying to play. “I create instruments from the unexpected and I f nd that’s a great analogy for other things in our

lives,” he says. “It’s important not to take things at face value; to look outside the square. It really does seem to hit a chord with people. Why does a grown man drilling a hole through a carrot and turning it into a clarinet get 62 million views on Facebook? It’s unexpected. The comments I really like are when people go, ‘aren’t humans great?’, because they are acknowledging the ability of each of us to create something new. “For me it’s about showing people that creativity can be something that’s very simple, something that is in us all and that music is fun and it’s all around us. On the surface it seems like a small, crazy, funny thing to do, but underneath that there’s a whole underlying philosophy of what I try to do with my music in terms of being involved in community and encouraging people to play music.” Pollak would have to be one of Australia’s busiest musicians. If he’s not working as an artist in residence in Austria, triggering frog sounds by having people squirt water from bottles onto giant plastic frogs, he’s playing in his Macedonian street band The Unusual Suspects, touring his 11th solo show, Live and Loopy or performing with collaborator Tunji Bier in their world music duo, Dva. His next big project is in Tasmania, where he’ll play the sounds of endangered or extinct animals on a MIDI-sax at sunset in a different wilderness location every night for eight nights. An environmentalist who decided at the age of 18 not to have children due to a deep concern about overpopulation, he has surrounded himself with the children he never had and they are his biggest fans. “They love to see the adult being more childlike,” he says. “Kids are still learning about the world and are intrigued and curious. Often after a show a kid will ask me, ‘how do you come up with those ideas?’ My answer is, I’m just trying to be more like you. But the cool thing about being an adult is I’ve learnt lots of things and have all this knowledge. The downside is, most adults have forgotten how to play and be curious and try new things like we all did when we were kids. We get too involved in the nitty-gritty of everyday life.”

Sad loss of Jess Ainscough

“O

n February 26th 2015, the world lost one of its brightest sparks. After 30 years, 7 of which were spent thriving with cancer, Jess Ainscough peacefully passed away.” These simple words on Jessica Ainscough’s blog broke the news of her death to the thousands of people who followed her life with cancer. The life of Jess is best summed up

by the theme on her website: “Be well, be kind, be brave.” When the former My Weekly Preview journalist was diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma in her left arm and shoulder in 2008, she underwent chemotherapy with some initial improvement. However, within a year the cancer had returned and doctors told her the best chance of beating the disease was to amputate her arm. She refused, and the woman known as the ‘Wellness Warrior’ to her followers turned to a natural healing method called Gerson Therapy, which advocates a dietary cure for cancer. The regime includes drinking raw juices and a strict vegan diet. Cancer institutes reject the Gerson therapy, saying there is insuff cient evidence to prove its safety or eff cacy. In lieu of gifts and f owers, Jess’ family has asked for any donation to be made to Edgar’s Mission – a non-for-prof t organisation she supported.

Council’s big push for export opportunities A greater focus on developing global connections has been revealed in the second quarter of the Sunshine Coast Council’s 2014/15 f nancial year. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the council hosted visits to the region by Trade and Investment Commissioners from the United Arab Emirates, Japan and the UK / Europe and three international delegations from Asia.

“Council also partnered in a trade mission to New Zealand with Sunshine Coast Destination Limited to promote the region’s tourism offerings and major sporting facilities. “Export capability was also strengthened through the delivery of the Sunshine Coast Export Network and partnering with local companies in the Premier of Queensland Export Awards.”

Local business gets up to speed on council contracts More than 330 local businesses trying to tap into Sunshine Coast Council contracts have attended the f rst Suppliers Forum in the region. Economic Development portfolio councillor Steve Robinson says the council spends more than $100 million per year on its Capital Works Program, and it wants locals to get the work. It’s about informing our local business operators about upcoming projects, and making it easier for them to tender.”

Key projects highlighted at the forum included an expansion of the animal pound, Alexandra Headlands foreshore upgrades and the upgrade of Jack Morgan Park at Coolum.

Triathlon to bring $14 million

T

he Sunshine Coast is gearing up to play host to 6000 competitors from around the nation and the world at this month’s 23rd annual Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival. More than 25,000 spectators are expected to descend on the region and inject $14 million into the economy during the three-day multi-sport festival which is hailed as one of the premier sporting events on Queensland’s calendar. Held from March 12 to 15, the festival includes the popular f ve-kilometre Twilight Run, Mooloolaba Ocean Swim, Sport and Lifestyle Expo, the fun-f lled Superkidz Triathlon and the hotly contested triathlon. The key event will see athletes battle it out in a 1500-metre swim, 40-kilometre cycle and 10-kilometre run – and it’s attracted competitors from right around the globe, including number one triathlete Javier Gomez

and fellow Spaniard, world number two, Mario Mola. This year the festival will also include the World Paratriathlon. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says the triathlon events strengthen the Coast as a major regional destination and sporting hub. “Our region has a distinguished history and reputation for hosting world class triathlon events and we’re very pleased to welcome international Paratriathlon here for the f rst time,’’ he says. “It will involve more than 50 athletes from Brazil, Italy, Japan and the USA and will count towards qualif cation for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, so it’s a signif cant event and a further vote of conf dence in the Sunshine Coast’s ability to cater for international sport.” For more information on the Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival visit ironman.com

iversification has been credited with the survival of one of the Sunshine Coast’s most iconic tourist attractions. Bellingham Maze owners Sophy and Wayne Wrangell know only too well how the diff cult economic climate of recent years can affect a business. With consumers tightening their belts and their star attraction – a cypress pine hedge maze – suffering from a range of environmental factors, the couple had no choice but to look outside the box and use the site for team building and business coaching. “We’ve seen the highs and lows in the diff cult economic market and had to change our strategy a lot,’’ Sophy Wrangell says. “We couldn’t keep standing still. When we pulled out the hedge we thought, ‘right, what are we going to do?’, so we did the team building.’’ “We also kept the focus alive by having different attractions like the timber maze, rope maze and mini golf.’’ This month they are set to bring new life to their business with the relaunch of the main attraction. The new 80 by 80-metre maze was constructed with 1000 lilly pilly plants and has

Renovate now with

been 20 months in the making. “Twenty long months of TLC in the form of fertiliser, regular trimming, irrigation, sunlight and natural rainfall have seen the tiny plants grow into a stunning 1.5-metre tall hedge maze,’’ Wrangell says. “It’s a unique attraction and there is not another one like it in Queensland. It appeals to people who like being outside. You can stretch your mind as you stretch your legs.’’ There will be a weekend celebration on March 21 and 22 to celebrate the relaunch, with a family fun day on the Saturday including activities, face painting and giveaways. The event will also highlight other tourism operators with a total of $20,000 in prizes to be given away during the f rst four weeks of the opening. “We’re excited that so many local attractions are supporting our launch, with free passes from Aussie World, Australia Zoo, Sunshine Castle, Big Kart Track, Nambour Civic Centre and Sea Life Mooloolaba included in the giveaways,’’ Wrangell says. The Bellingham Maze will open on March 21 and 22 and is located at 274 Tanawha Tourist Drive, Tanawha.

Malcolm in the middle As the debate rages about how long Tony Abbott will last in the country’s top job, we take a look at Malcom Turnbull, the man tipped to succeed him. 1. Turnbull’s middle name Bligh is a family tradition; his dad and son also share it.

6. Turnbull’s parents separated when he was nine – he was then raised by his father.

2. The self-made man used to be the richest person in parliament, but his $133 million falls well short of political newcomer Clive Palmer.

7. His careers have included journalist, lawyer, investment banker and venture capitalist.

3. He was leader of the Liberal Party and Opposition leader from September 2008 to December 2009. He lost the leadership to Tony Abbott by one vote. 4. When Turnbull was chairman of the Australian Republican Movement, one of his main opponents was staunch monarchist Tony Abbott. 5. He was a Rhodes Scholar – so was Tony Abbott.

8. He once represented Kerry Packer against corruption allegations and defended Peter Wright in the famous Spycatcher trial. 9. Turnbull is a Roman Catholic – he used to be a Presbyterian. 10. The man he deposed as Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson, the former president of the Australian Medical Association, gave this diagnosis of Turnbull: narcissistic personality disorder.

WHY DIETS FAIL YOU

Around seventy percent of Australians are overweight or obese. Yes, we have recently taken over as the fattest country on the planet. That’s one gold medal we can do without. Virtually all overweight people have tried to lose some weight in the past. You don’t have to be all that observant to realise that current approaches are simply not working. Typically people place far too much emphasis on exercise. It helps but you need to modify your eating regime for worthwhile long term fat loss. Hitting the gym alone is not the answer. That is why the gyms are full of fit fat people. There is way too much emphasis on what our scales are telling us. At Revival we really play down the importance of gross weight. The percentage of fat and size measurements are far more an indication of desired results. After all girls, if you had a body like Elle McPherson and weighed 100kg, would you care? Of course not.

So FAT LOSS is the main goal. We need a scientific approach to be successful. The failure of a typical ‘diet’ where the main focus is calorie control is that you lose both fat and muscle. Since muscle is a major component of our metabolism and it burns about ten times the energy that fat does, we don’t want to lose any of it. Unfortunately, many lose five kilos which is comprised of three kilos of fat and two kilos of muscle. When the weight goes back on it is five kilos of fat so the net position is much worse than before the diet. A successful fat loss eating plan will stimulate the metabolism, quickly reduce fat, maintain or build lean muscle and educate on how to make better lifestyle choices. The system also needs to be easy to comply with and comfortable to follow without hunger. Call Ange Hill, a Principal of Revival Revival Principal, Ange Hill Clinic on 5477 5788.

NEW COOL WAY TO RESHAPE YOUR BODY The “Cool Body by Revival” treatment is the newest, most innovative and non-invasive way to quickly lose those annoying bumps and bulges of stubborn fat around areas like stomach, love handles, thighs and arms. This unique freezing technology transforms those troublesome areas. It’s gentle, works quickly and the results are stunning.

A trip the kids will never forget The extravagant delights of Dubai are even more thrilling when you see them through the eyes of a child. By Josie Clarke

I

t’s 8pm and my five-year-old is sitting down to dinner in the desert, having sprinted barefoot to the top of a sand dune to watch the sun set, before enjoying a jaunt on the back of a camel. Earlier today she was zorbing down a ski slope and making snow angels. This could only be Dubai. The little lady, who has f nally confessed to feeling a bit sleepy, has apparently expended the last of her energy bartering with a shopkeeper for a tiny sparkly pink camel as a memento – f nal price 10 dirhams (around $2.50). She’s been shooed away from the shisha pipes despite her protestations and f nally perches at the edge of a stage as a belly dancer makes her glamorous entrance. All in all, it’s been quite eventful. We’re the second day into a mother and daughter break – with the emphasis very much on the daughter – that began at around 6.30am with breakfast at our hotel, with its spectacular view

across The Dubai Fountain to the Burj Khalifa, the f rst rays bouncing off the tower’s beautiful curves upon curves, as we enjoyed the early warmth of an October day in the desert. The breakfast chat revolved around the entertainment of the evening before at KidZania, the theme park in the Dubai Mall built to scale for children, where they can earn money in just about any profession they care to imagine. It’s one of those places you know kids are going to absolutely love, because parents are effectively barred from getting involved, gently directed instead to the on-site cafe, while their ambitious youngsters get on with making money. Within the space of two hours, my daughter had piloted a passenger jet, presented a show for Al Jazeera, worked as a courier driver, raced a car and somewhat randomly bottled Coca-Cola. There’s no expense spared on making the children feel like grownups, and we’re deliberating if the M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

APP OF THE WEEK

> RFID WALLETS

Word Brain

Chances are you have a credit card, licence or passport with Radio Frequency Identification Technology embedded in it. It’s convenient and people love it. And so do thieves – your cards can be scanned without you knowing, leaving your bank account vulnerable and your identity compromised. RFID-blocking wallets are designed to increase the security of cards embedded with RFID technology. For the frugal, a piece of aluminium foil strategically placed in your wallet will suffice but if you are after something a bit more stylish, there are a variety of options on the market from small metal cases through to standard wallets or credit card holders. But do your research before you buy, they aren’t necessarily all created equal.

(Free for IOS)

Do you love words? Looking for a fun way to fill in some time and keep your brain active? Then check out the Word Brain app. This word puzzle starts off relatively easy and gets increasingly challenging as you progress. It’s heaps of fun and makes you think. The idea is to find the word in the letters provided and once you are successful it will give you another challenge, gradually increasing the number of letters and words. It’s free for iOS.

Investment checklist: what to look for before you part with your cash

Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

W

hen making the decision to invest in property (either commercial or residential), equities and fixed interest securities, it is advisable to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each asset class, appreciate how each class works, and what analysis should be undertaken prior to investing. In relation to equities, the elements to keep front of mind revolve around company management, the balance sheet, your understanding of the business, and the industry in which it operates. And it is benef cial to think long term. The company’s managers ensure decisions made by the board of

directors regarding the direction of the company are implemented to an expert level. They need to be cognisant of the ability of the company’s employees to implement the changes, and capable of foreseeing and dealing with issues that arise. At the end of the day, whether reviewing a large or small company, the quality of the people employed is essential to the success of the business. A company’s balance sheet is critical to its long-term success. A strong balance sheet tells you much about the company including, but not limited to, its likelihood of failure. What are the assets on the balance sheet? Are they high-quality assets? These questions are vital as borrowings are included in the liabilities side of the balance sheet. When the value of assets is rising, the percentage of the balance sheet that liabilities make up should fall. When a loss of asset value is experienced, however, liabilities and their servicing tends to consume a

signif cant amount of management time and focus. The key lesson is that gearing is important and must be well-managed. A successful company should also have strong cash generation and invest its funds wisely. The next two key points focus on the macro and micro elements of the business. Taking a macro view, does the company operate in an industry in which it is possible to have a sustainable competitive advantage? This can be a function of how diff cult it is for competition to enter the market, among other things. It is such industries that allow companies to grow earnings through most cycles. A couple of examples include banking, and historically, consumer staples Woolworths and Coles. In the micro element of the analysis, do you understand the business you are buying? You may not necessarily understand how a cochlear implant works, but you should understand when and what they are

used for, and why this particular product is better than others. Last but not least, let the business mature and grow. Try to turn down the daily noise. To put it simply, align your investment interests with the time horizon of the company in which you invest.

2015 AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR 2 P PRIDE OF AUSTRALIA'S NATIONAL COURAGE MEDAL RECIPIENT & FAMILY VIOLENCE CAMPAIGNER, ROSIE BATTY.

In February 2014, Rosie's 11-year-old son Luke was u murdered by his father, Greg Anderson, after cricket practice. At the time, Greg Anderson was subject to two intervention orders. He was shot dead by police just 24 hours later. Rosie both shocked and inspired Australians by speaking out amid her grief to confront a widespread problem. She established the Luke Batty Foundation to help others in her situation. Rosie's name has become synonymous with the words courage and resilience. She has jolted the country into talking about family violence, calling on Australians to recognise that it can happen to anyone, no matter what their circumstances or history. Rosie will share with us not about the tragedy as much as about how anyone can overcome anything and turn it into something positive.

New Infiniti engine hits the sweet spot WORDS Peter Atkinson

on’t you just love it when people listen to your suggestions? Take Inf niti, for instance. Regular readers may recall that when we drove their new Q50 sedan a few months back, we judged it to be an impressive car, held back by a couple of disappointing engine choices. The diesel version was a bit slow and noisy, the V6 petrol-electric hybrid was punchy but not all that fuel-eff cient, and also disappointingly jerky at times. Now, lo and behold, Inf niti has added a third, more affordable, more conventional engine choice to its nicely put-together mid-sized luxury sedan. Being marketed, rather unromantically, as the

Q50 Petrol, the two-litre turbocharged engine adds a very driveable, reasonably frugal and almost sporty string to the luxury maker’s bow. It also means that, in its most basic form, this classy sedan dips within a whisker of the $50,000 price barrier. That should give the Inf niti some fresh ammo in its efforts to lure buyers away from Mercedes, BMW and Audi (although Audi is pitching an equally tempting price on its A4). When we f rst drove the Q50, we couldn’t help but be impressed by its sleek looks, classy cabin, strong level of f nishes and sharp technology. This new model adds to the appeal. The two-wheel-drive GT version will set you back $50,900 in two-litre form, and you’ll pay an

extra six grand for the upgraded S version and $60,500 for the f agship S Premium with this new engine (all plus onroad charges). That’s still more attractive than either of the other engine choices in a range that tops out with the all-wheel-drive S Premium Hybrid at $73,900, so we can expect to see more Q50s on the road in the months ahead. Inf niti dealers struggling to f nd broad acceptance in the luxury mid-sized market will welcome that. When you’re battling with the Mercedes C-Class, BMW’s 3-Series, Audi’s A4 and the Lexus IS range, you need all the incentives you can get. Finally, though, Inf niti (the upmarket brand of Japanese maker Nissan) seems armed for the f ght. This new engine is smooth and willing, pushing out a useful 155 kilowatts and 350 Newton metres of torque, while delivering reasonable fuel eff ciency of 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres. It is lighter and more responsive than the diesel, while giving comparable torque and much more accessible power – all in all, a superior driving experience. We drove the basic GT and also the higher-spec S Premium version of the Q50 after its heart transplant and enjoyed both models. The basic GT doesn’t feel quite as plush as its more sumptuous siblings, but manages to deliver a sophisticated feel with stylish, contemporary design. Even in the entry-level model, you can expect features including dual touchscreen displays showcasing an iPad-styled InTouch system, satellite navigation, LED headlights, drive-mode selector, Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming, leather trim, electric seats, windows and mirrors, digital radio, keyless start and tyre pressure monitors. An extra $6000 for the mid-range Q50S adds bigger 19-inch alloys, adaptive steering, sport

[ brakes and suspension, paddleshifters, sunroof and Bose premium audio, while the range-topping Q50 S Premium includes radar-guided cruise control, frontal collision avoidance system, lane departure avoidance, blind spot warning and intervention, all-round view monitor and active front lighting system. Inf niti boasts that many of this car’s features aren’t visible to the occupants. The seats, for instance, apparently used NASA technology to create a zero-gravity effect that prevents slumping and tiredness on a long journey. It is the f rst car to use steer-bywire technology using an electronic link, rather than a mechanical one to convey the driver’s inputs to the steering rack. Inf niti boasts this Direct Adaptive Steering allows the driver to customise steering feel and feedback. Inf niti also claims the Q50 is a car that never forgets, storing individual preferences for each driver and installing those when that person’s key is used to unlock the car.

The system extends not just to seating positions, climate control settings and audio preferences but will even welcome you by name when you start the car and store navigation settings to get you home. Like our previous experience with other Q50 variants, we were impressed by the classy, luxurious feel of the cabin. It’s Lexus-like, which is no small compliment. The iPad-style centre console allows you to navigate with a swipe of the f nger through a menu of icons to access everything from satellite navigation, steering response settings, audio and climate control settings to a compass, choice of clocks and even a

INFINITI Q50 PETROL

performance monitor that measures the car’s cornering G-forces. It’s even possible to upload Facebook and Google accounts to this system, which also incorporates an app garage for storing applications as they are added, via syncing with your smartphone (Apple or Android). InTouch raises the bar in terms of cabin design with a shiny, black, glassy surface and vivid icons. Inf niti even provides buyers with a polishing rag for the touchscreen. Other cockpit controls are tactile and well placed, while the instrument binnacle is attractive and functional. Softtouch surfaces and glossy inlays complete a stylish cabin design. Quietness and cabin ambience rival that of its segment competitors. Interior space is good, as is cargo space, which brings us to one f nal advantage of this new engine. While the Q50 Hybrid uses some of that space to accommodate its storage batteries, the petrol version’s boot is deep and useful. Just the way we like it.

Details: Four-door, f ve-seat mid-sized luxury sedan with four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and seven-speed automatic transmission. Tech stuff: 2.0-litre, fourcylinder, direct-injected turbocharged petrol engine, fuel-saving stop-start system, seven-speed automatic transmission with Adaptive Shift Control and wheel-mounted shift paddles. Features: Five-star safety rating, dual-screen displays with touchscreen satellite navigation, InTouch app-style control system, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming, drive-mode selector, tyre pressure monitoring, intelligent key with start button, direct active steering. Thirst: 7.3L/100km. Verdict: Had the body, now has the heart. Bottom Line: From $50,900 plus onroad costs.

WORD ON THE STREET

Mitsubishi’s greenest SUV Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has impressed SUV lovers with the unveiling of the all new Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II at the 85th Geneva International Motor Show. The small SUV is powered by a new Plug-in Hybrid EV (PHEV) system and is expected to be the company’s second PHEV following the Outlander PHEV launched in 2013. The new PHEV system presented in the Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV II is a lightweight, compact and high-eff ciency front-engine, frontdrive system ideal for a small SUV. The new power drive unit comprises a compact and higheff ciency inverter and variable voltage system to achieve high power and high torque. Designed to operate primarily in all-electric mode with the engine acting as a generator or supplying additional motive power when needed, the PHEV system automatically switches between all-electric, series hybrid and parallel

hybrid modes. Featuring a 120-kilowatt electric motor, the Concept’s system is predicted to achieve low CO2 emissions of below 40 grams per kilometre – among the lowest of any PHEV. The concept model ref ects MMC’s focus on electric vehicles in its approach to environmental technologies. The company is in the process of developing PHEV systems best suited to each model in its line-up. In addition to the impressive system, the vehicle itself features a body shape that comprises a character line which sharply cuts into its sides and merges with the protruding rear fenders.

Gotta love a Lexus Lexus has taken out the gong for the automotive category of Roy Morgan Research’s Customer Satisfaction Awards for a second time. The awards are based on Roy Morgan’s Single Source survey, which is made up of information from about 52,000 Australians during the past 12 months. Lexus Australia chief executive Sean Hanley says the award is a reflection of the brand’s emphasis on quality products combined with exceptional customer service.

Sorrento wins on safety The all-new Kia Sorento has been awarded a ‘Top Safety Pick’ rating by the USA’s Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The third-generation Sorento SUV

qualified for the award by achieving a positive rating in every one of the required tests. This is the latest accolade from a globally-respected crash safety organisation. The Sorento has previously been awarded the five-star crash safety rating by Euro NCAP.

New Corolla unveiled The Geneva Motor Show is currently taking place and motoring companies are unveiling some exciting projects, such as the updated Toyota Corolla hatch. The new car, known as Auris in Europe, features fresh exterior and interior designs, an upgraded cabin and new comfort and safety equipment. Cars slated for Australia will be built in Japan and arrive later this year. The vehicles will offer improved fuel efficiency while retaining the most powerful Corolla engine available – 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol with maximum output of 103 kilowatts.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Hold onto your hat – it’s going to be a turbo-charged week, as Mars dances with Jupiter, and then tussles with Uranus and Pluto. Fabulous opportunities are ripe for the picking but – if you are too hasty – then you could find yourself in a complicated situation.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Are you confused about which path to follow in the future? Pay close attention to your dreams. They are full of creative ideas and symbolic wisdom that can lead you in the right direction. Taurean painters, writers, musicians and performers will feel particularly inspired.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] You’re keen to connect with others as the planets kick-start your networking zone. It’s time to mix and mingle; innovate and inspire; text and tweet. People are waiting to hear what you’ve got to say so brainstorm your creative ideas, then start communicating!

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] The mid-week Mars/Pluto square can trigger intense experiences that aren’t necessarily pleasant. So avoid winding up a family member, pushing your partner’s emotional buttons, or getting into an altercation with an authority figure.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] This week Mars and Uranus detonate your daredevil side and Jupiter jump-starts your motor, so it’s time for languid lions to leap out of your usual routine and do something wildly different. Travel, education and publishing are particularly favoured.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Expect some friction mid-week as a child, teenager or friend becomes more entrenched in their opinions and less likely to be adaptable. With Mercury (your ruling planet) moving into your relationship zone, the weekend is a wonderful time to sit down with loved ones.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] There’s a heavy feeling in the air this week, as some family members get caught up in power plays. Attached Librans – take your partner for granted at your peril. They may go looking for love elsewhere. Singles – are you picking dates from the same-old places?

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] When it comes to a study issue, job application, work project or career move, don’t take the safe path this week. Mars and Jupiter encourage you to be bold and go for gold! But, if a painful personal issue is dredged up, don’t be too dismayed.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Sagittarians tend to go to extremes. And you’re walking a fine line at the moment as you strive to get the ratio right between being expansive and exuberant in the outside world, and being personally disciplined and focused. Jupiter sends an awesome opportunity your way.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Travel and international contacts are favoured, as you extend your local network to include people from faraway places. But avoid handing out criticism no matter how ‘constructive’ you think it is. Aim to be a cool and confident Capricorn.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] When your ruler Uranus hooks up with mighty Mars, you go into crazy-brave mode as you set about demolishing any obstacles that litter your path on the road to more personal freedom. The future beckons, and you’re in a mad hurry to get there!

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Pisceans have an uncanny sixth sense and you’ll be using it this week as you follow your gut instincts – especially involving love, lust or loot. Mercury moves through your sign (from Friday until March 30) so it’s the perfect time to discuss your dreams with family and friends.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

Well folks I have good news and some not so good news. OK, the not so good news is the surf forecast looks bleak. Have a sense of humour, it could be worse, you could live on Bribie! Now the really good news, I just walked in the door from seven hours of riding fresh snow all day in Canada. It was full on. We got stuck riding in snow storms with 50 knot winds by ourselves. Yep no one here‌fresh powder all day. Now for a cold beer and the hot tub!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Whiting are taking yabbies when cast onto the same banks that yabbies were pumped from as the tide comes in, and the banks around Goat Island are returning fish to 600 grams. You can get mangrove jack on livies and lures amongst the snags up in Petrie and Eudlo Creeks. Your best chance for flathead is on the drift using plastics from Cotton Tree to Pincushion. SURF: Sand whiting and dart are working the low tide gutters along Maroochy North Shore using pippies and worms. There are jew on the night tides at Pincushion with a few tailor feeding on them. You’ll get nice bream on peeled prawns at Pincushion. OFFSHORE: Now conditions have improved greatly, most close-in reefs are working well at dawn and dusk for parrot, sweetlip and cod using squid and fish fillets. The Barwon Banks are returning squire, pearlies and mixed reef fish on pillies and squid. Mackerel are still around but a search is required, and before dawn is the best time. OFFSHORE: Lake Baroon is firing for saratoga on flies and shallow trolled divers, with small bass and golden perch taking medium diving lures in the late afternoon along rock faces and any weed drop-offs.

After you have made the move to Caloundra Rise you’ll wish you had done it earlier as the peace of mind it gives you frees you up to go and do all the things you have been waiting to do. Just a short distance to magnif cent beaches and picturesque hinterland. A community style living with regular events, classes and get togethers.

Community style facilities: • 2 & 3 bedroom homes • Air conditioned community centre • Landscaped gardens • Heated inground pool
