MANY HAPPY RETURNS

Maree Machin of Coolum is the creator and owner of tracTAG – a recovery system that uses the latest in technology and design to help you locate lost possessions.

Q. First job? A. Laboratory cadet, Drug Chemistry at

beauty of my world. That can include things like beach picnics and walks. So, one of the longer tracks through Noosa National Park to A Bay is always a favourite for a dawn walk. And Mt Coolum is spectacular. In the hinterland, I’m delighted to share Kondalilla Falls and Wappa Falls.

If you could change one thing on the Coast what would it be?

Q. First car? A. A white Holden Gemini – I loved that

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point?

Q.

A. The first time I held my own camera.

Favourite book? What are you reading now?

A.

I devour too many books to have a favourite. At the moment, it is from the sublime to the ridiculous – Blue Ocean Strategy (Kim & Mauborgne) and Skulduggery Pleasant (Landy).

Q. Favourite song? A. Leonard Cohen, Hallelujah. It is haunting, lush, beautiful and teeters on the edge of despair.

Q.

Best advice you’ve been given (and by whom)?

A.

Smile. Nothing is that serious. From a stranger walking past me one day when I was a 19 year-old sitting at a bus stop. That man’s words have echoed through my life. The difference a smile

makes can never be underestimated

Q.

How long have you lived on the Sunshine Coast?

A. Since 1993. I was over Brissy, so I literally tossed a coin to decide between the Sunshine Coast and Northern Rivers (NSW). Sunny Coast won. I packed up the car, loaded the dog in the back and have always counted myself very lucky to have chosen lifestyle and been able to shape a career.

Q. Why do you live here? A. I can’t imagine living away from the water. I fell in love with the headland at Point Perry ever so long ago. I am on the beach most days. Usually doing an early run

along the tracks or catching dawn or dusk moments to share with friends. I never tire of it.

Q. What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast?

A. Can I have two? First Bay (Coolum). It’s where I essentially raised my boys. The rock pools and cliffs are endlessly interesting to explore. Outside of holidays, it’s usually peaceful and quiet. HMAS Brisbane. Diving is one of my passions and the Brisbane is one of my favourite local dives (shout out to Sunreef). Bliss.

Q. Where do you take visitors when they come to the Coast?

A. I try and share a bit of the natural

It was my 12th birthday gift. It was a little instamatic and that was it. Photography has gifted me a creative journey that underscores so much of my daily life. It has taught me about risk, passion and commitment, lessons I apply every day.

Q. What frustrates you the most? A. Not having enough hours in the day. Slow internet.

Q.

If you could tell your 18 year-old self anything, what would it be?

A.

Be easy on yourself. Trust your instincts.

Q. NRL or AFL and who do you follow? A. Not a follower of blood sports, although I will share my dirty secret… mesmerised by State of Origin!

CHAMPION MAKER Michael King defines the term role model. He is hard-working, inspiring, promotes clean living and above all, is a down-to-earth family guy. He is also the man credited with producing some of the Coast’s best ironmen and women. Since 1999 he has coached Mooloolaba Surf Club’s best and brightest athletes and he has no plan to slow down anytime soon. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

he overhead lights glimmer against the cool, black water and a faint breeze creates a silent ripple against the flat surface. The sun is yet to rise, but Michael King is already at work preparing the pool for the early morning training session. It’s 5am sharp when his squad takes to the water and the fast-paced, energy draining session doesn’t finish until 7am. As the athletes, who range in age from 16 to 30, climb from the pool to prepare for the day ahead – whether that’s study or work – they know the reprieve is only short-lived. When 4pm rolls around they will be back at it, but this time the ocean will be their training ground and the waves their opponent. From there, their feet will hit the pavement for a run to wrap up the day’s training at 7pm. It’s the life of a professional ironman or ironwoman – training five or six days a week, weekend competitions and

12 My Weekly Preview | March 13, 2015

12.indd 1

only a short six-week break before it starts all over again. At the helm of the Coast’s ironman and ironwoman factory is 47-year-old Michael King, Mooloolaba Surf Club’s head coach for the past 16 years and a former series winner. He’s been credited with coaching

“I absolutely love seeing people improve and perform above their expectations’’

and supporting more than a hundred athletes including Nutri-Grain IronMan/IronWoman Series competitors Matt Poole, Ali Day, Matt Bevilacqua, Amy Nurthen, Luke Cuff

and Karlee Nurthen. The humble man takes little credit for their success, yet there is no escaping the fact that King is exceptional at what he does, or the feeling he is a steadfast and inspiring role model to these athletes. “I get more from training than I did from competing, honestly,’’ King says. “I absolutely love seeing people improve and perform above their expectations. It’s awesome. “There is a sense of reward, I see it in them and they are so much happier, confident and the belief in themselves is amazing.” Hard work is the key to success on the ironman and ironwoman circuit. “It’s a 100 per cent commitment. They’ve got to buy into the program, have goals and have got to make a lot of sacrifices,’’ King explains. “NRL and NFL players get paid a lot of money; these guys don’t and these guys are great role models.

Their image is clean. “Some of them have to work part-time as well. They are racing against people who are full-time professionals, but they’ve got to earn an income to live and some do the hard yards. It’s hard work along the way but it teaches them appreciation. “It’s about doing the best you can and getting the most out of your career. “You want to look back and be proud of what you do to achieve something.’’ The pairing of hard work and achievement is something King knows firsthand. Surf lifesaving is in his blood. Born and bred in Gladstone, he was a nipper for the Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club. On leaving school, King did an apprenticeship as a fitter and turner to ensure he had a backup career option should he not be successful in the sport. It was a smart move but not needed, because at the age of 20 he relocated to the Sunshine Coast and went on to win the 1994/95 Ironman Uncle Toby’s Super Series. “I always loved it. I loved hard work and loved the challenge,’’ King says of his golden days. “It’s about challenging yourself to see where you get to and bettering yourself every day. “I loved training. It was never a chore for me. It was something I woke up to and looked forward to, particularly after doing an apprenticeship. “I thought: ‘that’s work and I never want to go back to that’.’’ A conversation with King is uplifting and littered with inspiring messages. Perhaps this goes some way to explaining why so many of his athletes view him as a father figure and role model. Following his Ironman series win in January, 24-year-old Ali Day told the media much of his success was due to King’s commitment and support. Day’s dream win, in which he beat legendary eight-times champion Shannon Eckstein, marked 20 years to the day that King won his series. The humble ironman has been training with King for four years after making the life-changing decision to move from his home town to the Coast. myweeklypreview.com.au

“It’s a pretty perfect fit,’’ Day tells My Weekly Preview. “I mean he’s not only a great coach but more of a really good mentor. He’s a good communicator, a good people person. “It’s not just about training, but it’s about your life. He has helped me through life, helped me through uni and helped me through some tough decisions. He’s a life coach.’’ Day says it’s King’s dedication to the job that sets him apart from others in his field. “He wants to get the best out of you no matter what type of athlete you are. He loves the sport and is dedicated to getting the best out of me and everyone, no matter who you are.’’ It’s this same dedication King brings to his family, including wife Genevieve and three children Zach, 11, Emmy, 9 and Kobe, 4. all clear and would not require further MRIs or surgery. “It’s a test and a challenge,’’ King admits. “It is what it is and you deal with it. He’s a champion little guy. “He was treated at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane; that puts your life in perspective as well. “People say they have all these issues and problems but then you see the kids down there. It’s the worst things down there. It makes you realise life is there to live it.’’ This is the message King shares with his children and his athletes. “Don’t take things for granted,’’ he adds. “Nothing comes easy. Commit yourself and do the hard work. “There are no easy options in life and that’s the bottom line. “You’ve got to dig deep and find something within you to do the best at what you do.’’

The surf will come alive with thousands of athletes this month as Queensland’s premier surf lifesaving events hit Maroochydore. The Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships will be held across two weekends, with more than 2000 competitors from across the state lining up to battle it out in the surf and on the sand. The 2015 State Youth Championships, incorporating the Under 11 to Under 15 age groups will take place March 20 to 22. The Senior Championships, including the Under 17 to Open categories, are on March 27 to 29. The events are hailed as the pinnacle event on Surf Life Saving Queensland’s sporting calendar. Reigning Nutri-Grain Ironman Series winner Ali Day is looking forward to performing on home ground. “I haven’t raced up here for a couple of years,’’ he says. “It’s always good to race at the beach we train at a couple of times a week. Myself, Kingy and the whole group are looking forward to getting out there.” The carnival will be the last chance for the athletes to f ne tune themselves before the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast in April. Surf Life Saving Queensland sports manager Stuart Hogben expects a healthy dose of competitiveness for this month’s championships. “It’s literally mate against mate and club against club out there and no one’s willing to give an inch when there’s a state title up for grabs,’’ he says.

NIPPERS COMPETE

COELIAC WEEK

The state’s best up and coming beach and ocean athletes will be in Maroochydore next Friday March 20 for the Queensland Youth Championships, when more than 1,500 nippers hit the surf and sand across three days.

More than one per cent of a GP’s patients will have coeliac disease, but it usually takes years for most people to be diagnosed. Coeliac Awareness Week (March 13–20) aims to increase awareness and early detection. coeliac.org.au

BE QUICK: VACATION MIGRATION

The founder and chairman of retail giant Harvey Norman and co-founder of the Magic Millions, Gerry Harvey will deliver the second annual Geoff Shadforth Memorial Lecture next Thursday March 19 at the Sunshine Coast University. Mr Shadforth, a prominent Sunshine Coast businessman, died tragically in 2013.

SAME-DAY DIAGNOSIS AT NEW BREAST CLINIC

The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital’s new $2 million breast clinic will open on Monday March 16. It will mean for the f rst time, women on the Sunshine Coast will be able to sit opposite an experienced breast physician on the day of their appointment and get the results. Previously, women would have to travel to Brisbane for a same-day diagnosis. The facility at the Buderim hospital will include 3D mammography, ultrasounds and an Australian-f rst mammography information system.

TREATING TURTLES WITH LOVE

SENATOR’S FEE FIGHT

Nine-hundred sick or injured turtles have been cared for by SEA LIFE Mooloolaba over the past 25 years, and another six are back where they belong, after being released into the Pacif c Ocean. Super Bowl, Dingo, Crush, Regi, Pita and Rafael, were taken in after being found injured, distressed or malnourished. After months of rehabilitation, they were returned to their natural environment, feeling much better than when they arrived.

‘OBSCURA’ NO MORE Here’s something you don’t see every day. This may be the f rst time a photographer has captured this rare spider on camera. The twomillimetre Corynethrix obscura was snapped on the University of the Sunshine Coast campus by keen wildlife photographer Gerard Mills. “The spider is so rare, apparently there was no known photograph of the creature,” Mills said.

Queensland Senator James McGrath, who is based in Nambour, says he will introduce a private member’s bill to abolish compulsory union fees for tertiary students. The LNP senator says the Student Services Amenities Fee, introduced in 2010 by the Gillard Labor Government, is a f nancially draining attack on freedom, describing it as a “tax on students.”

COAST’S NEWEST SCHOOL

Students at the new Montessori International College are already making their mark after creating original art works to symbolise the school’s off cial opening. The purpose-built campus on 22 hectares of bushland at Forest Glen will allow students to start and f nish their schooling at the one location.

GIRLS ON TRACK

T

he Sunshine Coast’s Caitlin Lavin has become the face of Racing Queensland’s newest campaign, Girls on Track, and yet when she visits the racecourse there isn’t a stiletto or fascinator in sight. Lavin, 28, is a professional thoroughbred trainer and is helping to spread the message that there is more to the industry than fashion. She believes the contribution of women in the predominantly male-dominated sport should be celebrated. “This series provides good exposure,’’ Lavin says. “In every sport males dominate don’t they? This is one of a few sports they (men and women) can compete in the same race together as jockeys or trainers. “Women are getting more respect. If I can do it, anyone can do it.’’ The series has already included thoroughbred heats at the Gold Coast and Ipswich, with the third heat taking place at Sunshine Coast Turf Club’s Corbould Park on Saturday. Girls on Track will culminate with two days of racing from March 27 to 28, featuring special races for fillies and mares. There are also bonuses for leading female jockey, driver and trainer in each racing code. In thoroughbred racing, women make up 27 per cent of jockeys, 18 per cent of trainers and 47 per cent of stable hands. The Girls on Track series continues Saturday, March 14 at Sunshine Coast Turf Club’s Corbould Park, Caloundra.

BATTLE FOR FAIRFAX The fight to become the LNP candidate to take on Clive Palmer for the division of Fairfax has just become interesting, with a philanthropic adventurer expected to battle it out with the man who just fell short against the billionaire in the last election. Morgan Parker, founder of the non-profit organisation Wheel2Wheel, which led to his own documentary series on the National Geographic Channel, is expected to throw his hat into the ring before nominations close on March 29. Parker has refused to confirm his nomination, but has ruled out running for mayor. Parker, who is also a former real estate executive, is believed to be getting strong support from the backers of Mal Brough, who is the Member for the adjoining division of Fisher. Businessman Ted O’Brien, who fell just 53 votes short of Palmer in the 2013 election, and had to wait eight weeks before the result was officially declared, is also expected to run. Councillor Christian Dickson whose council division is in Fairfax will not nominate to become the LNP candidate.

RAINBOW CONNECTION WIN News weather presenter and meteorologist Hannah McEwan explains the wonder of rainbows.

R

ainbows are one of the most beautiful weather phenomena, and by far my favourite. But they are also quite rare, as you need there to be both rain and sun at the same time for one to appear. A full rainbow is actually a circle, however we don’t see this as the horizon gets in the way. The best time to see a rainbow is when the sun is setting or rising. The higher the sun is in the sky, the smaller the rainbow will appear. Rainbows are made by sunlight passing through small water droplets that are suspended or falling through the atmosphere. When the beam of sunlight enters the droplet it bends. It is then reflected inside on the back of the droplet and is bent again when it leaves, forming an arc. A second rainbow forms when the light is reflected twice inside the droplet. The colour that comes out of the water

droplet depends on how much the white sunlight bends when it enters and exits the water droplet. A rainbow is made up of many colours, however there are only seven that are visible to us: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. A primary rainbow will have red on the outside of the arc and violet on the inside. The sun is always behind you when you face a rainbow, and the rain is in the direction of the rainbow. For a rainbow to appear, there must be an approximate 42-degree angle formed between you, the water droplets and the sun, and the sun must be behind you. Only the water droplets that help form this angle with you contribute to the rainbow you see. If someone is standing nearby, they would see a different rainbow, which is created by the angle between different water droplets, the sun and their position. A rainbow is an optical illusion, and is not a specific distance from the viewer. It can’t be touched and there is no end, but I don’t think I’ll ever stop looking for that pot of gold.

THE INTERVIEW

BLEIJIE LOOKS BACK

Member for Kawana, Jarrod Bleijie has no regrets about his time in the hot seat. By Richard O’Leary doubt the people he is advocating for not to be covered by legislation, are people who should be covered under criminal gang laws. We’re talking about drug manufacturers, drug traffickers. We’re talking about organised crime.

Q. Do you hold any fears for your IMAGE: SAM WALKER

personal safety now that you have lost the protection of your previous position?

Q.

Do you regret the stoush you got into with the Member for Nicklin, Peter Wellington, who has now delivered government to Labor?

A. No, no, because politics and parliament is about the battle of ideas and policies and we disagreed on many policies. I still disagree with his prostance on criminal gangs. There is no

A.

I had a job to do. We had feedback from police at the time, the intel was the bikies thought we were just bluffing and we’d talk all this up and like governments before us didn’t have the ticker to go through with it and introduce it to parliament. Now that did come at a personal cost, but I don’t do this job because it’s a popularity contest. The personal cost was the safety and security of my family. Threats we received against the kids.

with the laws. The second reform I was particularly interested in was the property reforms. We achieved a 40 per cent reduction in paperwork to buy and sell property in Queensland.

take for the loss?

A.

You’ve got to take collective responsibility. Collectively as former Cabinet ministers we take responsibility. We also take responsibility for all the good stuff we did.

A. I couldn’t have done the reforms I

Q. Was it the worst sales job ever? A. I think we’ve all acknowledged, it

did, the government couldn’t have done the reforms it did without him at the helm, because he drove us to get those reforms done. Some people are of the view that, well you got voted out so just don’t talk about anything that you did. Well, I don’t hold to that because there were so many great things we did.

Q. Looking at the election, what went wrong?

A. The criminal gang laws because it

I think when I look at it, over the last three years, it was a good government, a reform government, we

colleagues have distanced themselves from Campbell Newman, but I see you still have a photo of him and yourself in your office. Politics aside, what do you think of him as a bloke?

Q.

As the former Attorney-General, what are you most proud of having done?

probably went a little too fast for people. We estimate we did ten years of reform in three years.

A.

we’d had our time again we would have done things differently.

Q.

Parliament is on a razor’s edge, do you think you could be back in government within the three years?

A.

We have to prove we deserve to be back in government, so that’s having a competent team, which I fundamentally believe there is. We have to prove ourselves to the people of Queensland that we are ready to be in government.

TALKING POINT

WHERE WILL WE BE IN 40 YEARS? The Intergenerational Report released by the Federal Government shows how our economy and population look now – and what Australia can expect to look like in 40 years’ time. These are the key findings. 1. By 2055 life expectancy at birth is projected to be 95.1 years for men and 96.6 years for women. For kids born today, it is 91.5 for men and 93.6 years for women. 2. One in 1000 people in 2055 is expected to be over 100 years old. That equates to about 40,000 people – the population of Hervey Bay. 3. The number of Australians over 65 is expected to double by 2055. 4. Today there are 4.5 people aged 15 to 64 for every person aged 65 and over. By 2055 that ratio

will halve. 5. Today 13 per cent of the workforce is made up of people 65 and over. By 2055 that’s tipped to rise to 17 per cent.

6. Today around 66 per cent of women aged 15 to 64 are employed – that’s expected to rise to 70 per cent by 2055. 7. Today, Australians produce twice as many goods and services for each hour worked as they did in the early 1970s. 8. Theeconomy and incomes are expected to grow but at a slower rate than the last 40 years. 9. Theaverage annual rate of growth in population is expected to be 1.3 per cent, compared to 1.4 per cent over the past 40 years. 10. If the country does grow at that rate, there will be about 40 million Australians in 2055.

MAKE MARAYKE MOBILE

IMAGE: MARION JONKERS PHOTOGRAPHY

Maroochydore Paralympian Marayke Jonkers believes that where there’s a wheel, there’s a way. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

L

ast year, Marayke Jonkers handed out the 100th grant through her charity, Sporting Dreams. Since 2008, the Sunshine Coast Paralympian has dedicated herself to helping Queensland athletes with disabilities achieve their goals – and now she’s the one in need of help. The 33-year-old from Maroochydore

was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome in 2011, an overuse injury that has caused her extreme pain and forced her to retire from swimming. It also means the formerly independent motivational speaker and employment consultant for people with disabilities has become virtually housebound. No longer able to push her own wheelchair, she now needs a motorised wheelchair that she can’t transport in her current vehicle. With her characteristic can-do attitude, she has launched a fundraising campaign to raise the $100,000 to $200,000 she needs to buy a wheelchair accessible van and have it modified for her to drive with a joystick. “There’s no government funding available,” she says. “I can’t do the volunteer work I used to do and I’m socially isolated. I’ve gone from being one of the fastest athletes in the world to dropping a piece of toast because I’m so weak. “It’s quite a drastic turnaround – it’s not how the people of the Sunshine Coast see me. They see me as this

superwoman, but that’s not my reality at all anymore.” A car accident as an eight-month-old baby left Jonkers a paraplegic, but the highly motivated young girl was never going to be held back. She won a silver and two bronze medals at three separate Paralympics, won a Queensland Young Achiever Award in 2005, was the inaugural winner of Cosmopolitan magazine’s Fun Fearless Female award and completed two university degrees. She wrote a bucket list at the age of 13, most of which she has already ticked off. When she visited the Egyptian pyramids and couldn’t push her wheelchair in the sand, she hitched a ride on a camel. When her wheelchair got stuck in the cobblestones of the Greek isles, she rode a quad bike in an Aussie flag bikini. “What I’ve learnt is that obstacles are actually part of life,” she says. “People often panic when obstacles come up. I could nickname myself the ‘comeback queen’, because I’m always coming back from something.”

Her latest obstacle has her relying on her 81-year-old grandparents to drive her around, and she’s been running her charity from her bed,“in hideous pain”. “I’m just looking for people to invest in me so I can go out and give to the community again. If I can have access to a motorised vehicle, I can go back to running my charity properly and working with school kids and people with disabilities to help them get involved in sports. I didn’t want to expect charity; I’ve never asked for donations in my life.” Marayke is approaching her latest challenge with a positive attitude and is hoping she’ll have the money she needs within the next six months. “I’ve decided when I get the car I’m going to have a big party in the park and crack a bottle of champagne over it.” The Make Marayke Mobile fundraiser offers a number of options on her website for those wanting to help. Visit marayke.com for more information.

Constipation, Stubborn Body Fat, Nausea or Bad Breath? Sinus? Headaches & Sneezing? Does Your Gut Gurgle? It May Not Be Allergies or Food After All! Sinus, hayfever, ongoing sneezing, and daily headaches, that can be worse in the morning, though seem to last more months through the year than the Spring should bring, and could have been going on for decades, all could be part of a bigger health problem that is NOT associated with your allergies! Do you also suffer with short term or lifelong constipation, gurgling sounds in the gut, stubborn weight, nausea, or bad breath? These are all connected to the same underlying cause, and can last a lifetime if never detected.

SAVE 30% Includes Theme Parks Entry

One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades, and have been mistaken for allergies, resulting in the overuse of nasal sprays or antihistamines, doing little to help, and harming your sinuses. You may suffer just a few of these symptoms or perhaps all of them. The cause has been found in the mucous membranes of the entire digestive canal, including the gut, right through the mucosa of the mouth and the sinuses, and it is not uncommon. It is an insidious infection mainly

picked up from eating food that has been left out for long periods, or food from street vendors during travelling, though is often only detected in specialised testing. This specif c infection has been found to burrow deep within the villi of your gut wall, a very hard to reach place, and has been shown to release a nerve toxin, paralysing the muscles of your bowel, causing symptoms of constipation and nausea, not to mention the secondary effects I’ve seen in some patients with chronic weight gain, fatigue, and tender lymph glands in the groin and armpits. It is rarely tested for, and is often mistaken for allergic rhinitis, or lazy bowel, and so can go on for years undetected and untreated, causing irreparable damage. Fortunately it is quite easy to address, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. I have seen patients who have suffered with fatigue, sinus headaches and overweight for many years, watching them adhere to low fat and low carb diets, all with no results, and after treatment for just a few months have improved out of sight, losing weight and feeling well.

These are not conditions with unknown cause like many believe, and can be resolved quickly when properly investigated with the right medical testing. If you would like to know more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation with one of our experienced and specially trained naturopaths. www.advancedwellness.com.au

MY OPINION

THE WASHING CAN WAIT

PARK LIFE

Bill Darby says the Coast should follow Caloundra’s example and implement paid parking to raise revenue and solve those pesky parking problems.

This week Sami Muirhead talks about green tea and the guilty pleasure of ‘me’ time.

H

i there! Allow me to introduce myself as I hope we will be spending some quality time together from today onwards. My name is Sami Muirhead. I am a modern woman with some old fashioned tastes; a mum of three young children, two dogs and one fish; a proud wife; a radio announcer; a terrible cook; a super bad driver; an Instagram addict, and a born and bred Sunny Coast local. I have worked in the local media for about 20 years and I am really excited to be writing for this fine publication as I have long had the pleasure of reading it every week. So you see, I already feel part of the family. When my chaotic home is finally quiet well after dusk and the clatter stops, with the clutter spent all over the floor, I love to pour a big mug of green tea and squish into my oversized chair. I love sitting and knowing my busy little heartbeats, at my knees all day, are all finally tuckered out and now tucked safe and sound into their cots and tiny beds. But my little reading ritual is indeed a guilty pleasure, because I feel I have not had a clean house or an empty inbox on my computer for years. I could spend my time in more productive ways. But

instead I always opt for the ‘me’ time. You are not going to be reading about world peace most weeks, because I believe we have enough doom and gloom in our crazy world. So let’s chat about our parenting antics, kids, fashion, friends, travel, food, our health and relationships. Let’s meet inspiring locals who dream big and live large. I would love to share stories about Coasties who have devoted their lives to great causes and making our community a better place. Let’s appreciate how wonderful it is to have waves crashing on our front door, and the breathtaking hinterland in our backyard. Blokes, you may not think this is your cup of tea but trust me – you may, just may, gain some insight into how us strange female cattle really tick. So let’s begin. Yippee! And if you are tossing up each week between cleaning or having a cup of tea, then I need to leave you with this thought: washing will always wait.

“I feel I have not had a clean house or an empty inbox on my computer for years”

For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.

e hear it all the time: what an amazing part of the world we live in. And it’s true, the Sunshine Coast is undoubtedly an awesome place to be. Beneath a veneer of sunshine however, it has been a turbulent time on the Coast. The local politics being played out have been dynamic, complex and at times divisive. Three councils amalgamating in 2008, one council de-amalgamating in 2013, leaving two councils in 2015. Now everyone is trying to play nicely under the one big Sunshine Coast umbrella. One of the first rules in creating any harmonious situation is for everyone to be treated fairly. Whether in the home or in a business context, it is reasonable to say fairness is often the foundation that underpins a culture of mutual respect. Sadly, in the aftermath of council boundary realignments, not once but twice, we have been left with too few level playing fields. One small example of inconsistent regional policy is paid parking. Those who visit Caloundra’s Bulcock Street will know that feeding the parking meters is part and parcel of supporting local businesses. Unless you’re visiting a hospital or catching a flight, nowhere else in the region will you pay to park. Back in the day, parking meters were installed by the former Caloundra City Council for a very good reason – shoppers were rarely able to find a

space in Bulcock Street because the shopkeepers took up all the spaces. This practice is happening across the Coast today, except in Caloundra. There are two ways of looking at paid parking. One is that it ensures the regular flow of traffic and in Caloundra’s case, provides a revenue stream to fund future urban renewal projects. The other is that would-be shoppers will gladly bypass parking meters and

“Will you commit to a fair and level playing field?” choose a free parking centre in which to spend their hard-earned. Truth be told, both points of view are right. Recent innovative thinking into new user-pay parking strategies is now providing win-win solutions to this long standing debate. Through the use of technology, retail centres are thriving and experiencing better turnover than ever before. A challenge to our councillors: are you prepared to think regionally on this issue? Will you commit to a fair and level playing field for all our region’s stakeholders? BRIGHT EYES

Beauty editors and make-up artists are moving away from the sexy smoky eye and embracing a more subdued, fresher look, which can be achieved with a swipe of white eyeliner. Before your usual make-up routine, just grab a white pencil and apply along the inner line of your lower lids. Then trace the corner of the eye in the same colour. Our product picks are duo liners that feature white to highlight and open the eye, and a black tip to add definition.

Hair Trend: the wob The ‘wob’, or wavy bob, is a celeb favourite as it is a young, playful style that adds texture and movement to hair. Have your stylist cut the ends wispy to avoid looking too blocky. Get the look with Fudge Sea Salt Spray, $19.95, to add texture and body. Available from Priceline.

Maybelline NY Big Eyes Eyeliner, $11.95, from pharmacies, department stores and supermarkets.

Dr Hauschka Kajal Eyeliner Duo, $33, go to drhauschka.com.au for stockists.

SHELF LIFE

How long should you keep your cosmetics? Lipstick can last up to three or four years, but when it starts to smell rancid, throw it away. Your liner should last a few years too. Throw away your mascara after three months but you should get about two years out of your pencil eyeliner. Keep eyeshadows for no more than three years, while foundation should be replaced every 12 months. Wash your brushes every two months but replace sponges every month.

TOP 10 HEALTH TRENDS Nutritionist, author and speaker Cyndi O’Meara predicts these health trends will be 2015’s biggest.

It’s important that expectant mothers exercise during their pregnancy – exercise can reduce back pain, shorten labour, ease stress and speed up recovery after giving birth.

Fitness First group exercise manager Charlotte Banfield has these tips to help you through your pregnancy: • Don’t try new things. • It’s safe to run, but stick to flat surfaces and don’t challenge yourself too much. • Work on strengthening your core and pelvic floor. • Breathe, stretch and relax and stay comfortable. • Don’t participate in dangerous sports, and avoid deep stretches such as lunges. • Drink lots of water. • Walking is the best exercise during pregnancy.

ANYONE FOR TEA? If you want a cuppa with a healthy kick, how about kombucha, a fermented black tea that is sometimes called mushroom tea. Kombucha contains probiotic bacteria to improve gut health and antioxidants that can help boost immunity. Check out your local health food shop for bottled kombucha in various f avours.

1. People will change from reading nutritional labels for calories, fat, salt and sugar to looking at the ingredients. 2. Farmers markets will become more popular and will be available during the week as opposed to only weekends. 3. People will seek out local farmers for meat, eggs, poultry and dairy supplies. 4. Functional real foods will overtake the chemical supplement food industry, for example, camu camu and kakadu plum for vitamin c instead of popping a tablet. 5. Fish oil will trend downward as people understand it’s not an ethical or sustainable product and instead buy plant-based Omegas 3s such as inca inchi and flax.

6. Salt, fat and sugar will not be seen as evil. Himalayan salt, good-quality fats such as cold-pressed nut and seed oils and natural sugars like rapadura sugar and honey will become pantry staples. 7. The stranglehold breakfast cereals have on the market will slowly decrease as more people realise they are a refined food laced with dubious ingredients. 8. The paleo movement will move away from being seen as a strict diet with no legumes, grains and dairy to more a way of life. 9. Private education courses for nutrition and health will be in demand. 10. There will begin to be a shift in food service to hospitals, retirement homes and tuckshops, as more people become informed about foods and their consequences to health. Julie-Ann’s top pics for evening (left), Mother of the Bride (above) and formal gowns (right).

Fashion veteran Julie-Ann Fenwick-Symons gives us a sneak peak into her fashionable life on the Sunshine Coast. JulieAnn Boutique is an established fashion institution. Yes, I started the business in Mooloolaba in 1989 and transferred up to Buderim 10 years ago. Your store certainly has a niche market. I do specialise in Mother of the Bride outfits, formal gowns, cocktail dresses, plus some upmarket casual, specifically

catering for clients coming up from Melbourne and Sydney. Labels are chosen for the styling plus the fact that no one else is allowed to stock them from Brisbane up? When a valued client makes an investment in a statement piece, I make an ethical effort to make sure she doesn’t turn up to a

it as Sunshine Coast event in the same outfit someone else. We keep a calendar of events and a register of who purchases which garment for what event. I keep tabs on who is wearing what for balls, pageants, events, formals and weddings. Can’t get enough… Time – not enough to live a life away from work!

TRAVEL

A

sea as calm as an infinity pool and a beach to myself. No sound other than the gentlest lapping of waves and a cooling breeze brushing the palms. Distant breakers over a reef on the horizon and only the trees, a hammock and white sand behind me. Fiji’s Castaway Island should have been my idea of hell. Travel used to be when I did things: exploring cities, backpacking across continents, crisscrossing Europe to watch soccer or trekking to whatever’s-just-overthere. My wife was the same. But then came parenthood, and suddenly we were already doing something every single exhilarating, grinding, glorious, exhausting minute. The idea of doing not very much on holiday started to become strangely alluring. So, after three years, we found ourselves contemplating the dreaded P-word. You know the one. Package. The word was enough to induce a shiver, conjuring visions of entrapment in an overcrowded resort, elbowing through slow-moving clusters of near-naked package veterans for even a glimpse of the congealing breakfast buffet, awkwardly avoiding the forced

fun of organised activities. If we were going to lose our P-plates, so to speak, we wanted to do it properly. Always so adventurous, we suddenly became enormously conservative. Rather than maintaining our do-ityourself ethic, we paid as much as we could afford in the hope of a smooth ride. We chose wisely. A forested speck in the Mamanuca archipelago, Qalito Island is a little more than an hour by boat from Nadi and home to Castaway Island resort. Getting there from Sydney took close to a full day, but the journey was pretty much seamless and stepping off the boat to be greeted with a cocktail and a group singalong was refreshing. Even better was the news that – in the lull between Australian school holidays and Chinese New Year – my wife, my three-year-old daughter and I were among just 12 guests at the 200-capacity resort. Nestled on the west of the island, Castaway boasts four restaurants, two pools and an unbroken stretch of beach curved lovingly around it on two sides. Our beachfront bure was seconds from the water and just far enough from its neighbours to ensure minimal noise. The hammock slung between two trees out front was a hit with the whole

family, perfect for a child to swing like a loon or an adult to catch up on some reading. Speaking of which, I know of few things more pleasurable than laying in a hammock with a Fiji Bitter in one hand and a Phillip Roth in the other while knowing our daughter was having fun in the kids club for at least another hour. The club runs daily for 13 hours from 9am with just a short break for dinner, although we only made use of it for a couple of hours in the morning. As much as our daughter was more than happy drawing, painting, reading, singing and playing on the beach with the caring staff, we were keen for our family holiday to be just that. After all, she’ll be embarrassed and bored by me soon enough. We want to spend time with her while she can’t do anything about it. With that in mind and in dogged pursuit of the sleep that has eluded us since our daughter was born, we were also happy to eschew the babysitters and crash for the night at the same time as her. That did mean we weren’t able to linger over dinner, which was a shame because the food from head chef Lance Seeto warrants attention. Lance is the culinary ambassador for

Fiji Airways so it was pretty special especially once we discovered a vegetarian menu containing a glorious variety of curries, pickles and dips. Mustard, cumin, ginger and chilli were all to the fore, those punchy flavours having been brought to Fiji when the British drafted Indian labourers to the sugar plantations in the late 19th century. We loved it. And our daughter was just as thrilled with her grilled fish and rice, her lunchtime grilled cheese sandwich and chips at the Waters Edge restaurant and the sushi served up at the family pool. There was a bit more to Castaway than just lazing and eating. The highlight was hiring a boat to take us out to see dozens of dolphins diving and pirouetting in the azure waters, although the shoals of flying fish that accompanied us as we kayaked around the island comes close. Snorkelling in the coral reefs that keep the water on the resort’s northwest side mirror-smooth was also pretty special. For about $18 you can pay for a child to attend the local school for an entire year and staff will pass on donations. One week of swimming, snorkelling, sleeping and solipsism on Castaway, and I’m no longer afraid of the P-word. *The writer travelled independently. AAP

GETTING THERE

Fiji Airways (Qantas codeshare) fly to Nadi twice a day on Monday, Tuesday and Sunday, once Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and three times on Friday. Taxis and buses are available to Port Denarau (half an hour), from where boats depart to Qalito Island.

PLAYING THERE

A two-hour dolphin safari costs just $25 a person, with island-hopping, outer reef snorkelling, parasailing and more available at extra cost. Use of snorkelling equipment, catamarans, kayaks, windsurfers, a glass-bottom boat and stand-up paddleboards are included, as is the tennis court. A six-night stay including all Fiji Airways flights, meals and transfers starts from $2859 an adult. Visit packages.qantas.com/deals/d/fiji or visit castawayfiji.com.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

CHECKING OUT AT WOOLIES Troy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

W

oolworths reported its first-half results on the last day of the recent reporting season, and the shares were sold off by 14 per cent in the next two trading sessions. After the result, Ord Minnett also cut its rating on the retailer from Hold to Lighten. So just what is going wrong at Woolies? The result itself was not terrible – underlying net profit was actually up 4.7 per cent, in line with our expectations – but like-for-like sales growth was weak at just 1.2 per cent. This compares poorly to its biggest competitor, the Wesfarmers-owned Coles, which recorded four per cent growth in the December quarter. In fact, the Woolworths growth rate

is its lowest since the September quarter of 2012, and the gap between its like-for-like sales growth and that of Coles is now the widest it has been since the March quarter of 2012. In response, Woolworths’ management has changed tack from saying that it needs to be “competitive” on price to saying it needs to be “cheaper”. This will come at the expense of profitability, as will its commitment to improving its customer service and staffing levels. Also of major concern is the Masters home improvement business. This business was launched in 2011 in direct competition to incumbent market leader Bunnings (also owned by Wesfarmers). The Masters business has not made a profit at this stage and in the latest half its losses actually increased 56 per cent to $112.1 million. The Ord Minnett analyst believes the business won’t break even until FY19 and even then he is uncertain about that timing.

The difficulty for Woolworths is that overhead costs for Masters are based on a network of 150 stores rather than the 50 stores that are actually open. These issues, in part, have led to management lowering its earnings guidance. Management has previously stated that underlying FY15 net profit would grow by between four per cent and seven per cent. Indeed, the chairman reiterated that guidance as recently as the November AGM. The company has now stepped away from that guidance, instead stating it is now comfortable in saying net profit will grow toward the low end of analyst expectations, which range from 1.8 per cent to 6.6 per cent. The justification is that this lower level of profits will enable the company to make the necessary investments in price and service to deliver on longterm plans and deliver value to shareholders. Clearly, shareholders have lost some confidence in management, as

evidenced by the market’s savage reaction to the announcement. Despite the correction in the Woolworths share price, Ord Minnett see better value elsewhere, as evidenced by the new Lighten rating on the shares. Peter Brown, chef Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club Q. What’s your favourite go-to meal at home? Slow roasted lamb shoulder. Q. What’s your favourite produce you source locally and how do you use it? Local limes. I have a lime tree at home and it just never stops producing fruit. At home I make a lime meringue pie because it’s my daughter’s favourite dessert. But mostly I use them in dressings or grilled with local fish. They are always good in a Corona or a ginger beer, champagne, lime and mint cocktail. Q. What’s the strangest meal request you’ve ever had? Nothing really stands out but I do find it amusing when people ask for their steaks burnt on the outside but rare in the middle. Q. Talk us through the process of creating a new dish? Speak to local suppliers to see what they have. Then work out what goes with the main ingredient, cook the dish up to see if it works. It’s all trial and error. Then I get the other chefs to try the dish and get their feedback. Next, cost the dish to make sure

WHAT’S ON

INVITED TO ROCK

FRIDAY, MARCH 13

Local artist Ryan Giles collaborates with US music producer for new single

Dave Reynolds

CASH CONVERTER

Johnny Cash’s legendary music will be brought to life for a one-off show this weekend. Singer/songwriter Dave Reynolds and his six-piece rockabilly show band will present the entertaining, high-energy show at The Events Centre in Caloundra on Saturday, March 14 at 7.30pm. The band will also feature songs from the Johnny Cash era including Creedence Clearwater Revival, Patsy Cline and Roy Orbison. Tickets are $49 for adults and $12 for children under 12, theeventscentre.com.au.

Ryan Giles picked up his first guitar at the age of six and 25 years later, the instrument is still in his hands. Performing professionally for the past 15 years, Giles is a firm favourite on the Sunshine Coast’s live music scene. Most recently, his music has reached new heights with his coastal grooves catching the attention of his new management team. When his new manager emailed Giles’ sounds around the world, they fell into the lap of American producer Stephen Wrench. He was so impressed with the music that he assembled some of the best musicians around – artists formerly of Ozzy Osbourne and Lynyrd Skynyrd fame – to play on Giles’ new single. The new single, Invited, will be released in coming months. Next week, music-lovers will have the chance to hear Giles’ smooth sounds at the Maroochy Originals Music Events (MOME). An initiative of the Maroochy Surf Club, MOME is a three-month program supporting the local, live music scene. Two artists will showcase their music at the club each Thursday from 8–11pm. Giles and fellow musician Bevan Spiers will take to the stage on March 19. MOME is on Thursday, March 19 at Maroochy Surf Club from 8pm. Entry is free.

JEFF MARTIN ON TOUR Following a mammoth year of recording and touring in Canada and Australia, Jeff Martin has hit the road for his Returning from the Ocean at the End tour. Armed with a bunch of new material, Martin will perform acoustic versions of tracks from his latest album as well as some classics from his Canadian rock band The Tea Party. Martin is playing on Thursday, March 19. Tickets are $35 at the door. For more information visit solbar.com.au

or many of us classy folk, drinking beer has become a somewhat religious experience. So with that in mind, I’d very much like to start this week’s review with a well known, classical prayer. “Our Lager which art in kegs, hallowed be thy drink, I will indulge at home as much as l do the tavern. Give us this day our foamy head and forgive us our spillages, as we forgive those who spill against us. Lead us not into incarceration but deliver us from hangovers, for thine is the beer, the bitter, the lager, forever and ever, Barmen”. Now at the risk of offending some good folk, I’d like to point out that God has a cracking sense of humour. How else do we explain New Zealand? But to further back my claim, it’s well known that men and woman of religion don’t mind a tipple now and then. For starters, the big fella himself was known on occasion to turn water into vino and then there’s the story of the nun in the convent who rushed to the Mother Superior’s room to report that she had simply terrible news: “Mother Superior, it appears we have a case of syphilis in the Convent!” To which Mother S replied, “Thank God for that, because the Beaujolais tastes awful!”. And with that done and dusted it’s onto this week’s tasty treat. A fair while ago we sampled a tops beer from good old Melbourne town by the name of Cricketers Arms Lager. It was a pretty ace drop, however many moons later and with a completely new look, the

Cricketers Arms peeps have released a new beer to complement their current line-up and this one is by far the best yet. The CA Spearhead Pale Ale. Now as you know, I’m bandit for a tops pale ale, I’m all over it like Kartel-Michael Hunt on a Gold Coast Saturday night. So my first thought was, yep good luck Cricketers, there’s plenty of competition out there, let’s see what you’ve got. It’s a ripper. If Cricketers Arms needed a spearhead for their brand this is definitely it. This new beer is what the good folk at CA call a ‘new world’ Pale featuring the brand’s signature Amarillo hops providing a subtle citrus aroma, mixed cunningly with a cheeky caramel inclusion and a refreshingly different NZ hop that gives it a bonza fruity finish. I could truly drink 100 of these little numbers. The lads have a bona fide match winner here. I give the Cricketers Arms Spearhead Pale Ale 4 out of 5 thumbs up.

THE LEAPING CAT RAISES THE ROOF This week Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the JAGUAR F-TYPE V6 COUPE

W

hen Jaguar first unveiled its new F-Type roadster, it was hailed as the first full-blooded Jaguar sports car in 50 years. The long-awaited, spiritual successor to the iconic E-Type Jag had it all. The looks, the performance, the mystique. All except for one thing. A roof.

You see, the purists will tell you that convertibles aren’t sports cars. They’ll say that despite the joys of feeling the wind in your hair and sun on your brow, roadsters and convertibles are inherently inferior to their hard-roofed siblings in terms of driving dynamics. Now, Jaguar has settled that argument with the F-Type Coupe,

blending all the beauty, performance and allure of the British brand’s latest flagship model and giving it a hard top. A cat with a hot tin roof, if you like. Jaguar says the new coupe is the most dynamically capable, performancefocused car ever to wear the leaping cat badge. High praise for such a fabled

marque. It’s truly an evolution of that timeless E-Type. But the F-Type Coupe also represents evolution in reverse. Normally you design a sports car as a coupe with the extra structural strength and rigidity that comes with a full steel canopy then at some later point, you slice Continued page 46>

MOTORING

<from page 44 off the ceiling to create a convertible. Jaguar did things the other way around with the F-Type. The result is the ultimate Cat in a Hat. Here’s the good news. It’s not only more rigid and more sporty than its soft-top sibling, it’s arguably prettier. Not to mention cheaper by about $20 grand. Styling-wise, it’s at least as visually fetching if not more so as its soft-topped sibling. Uber designer Ian Callum’s fingerprints are all over the coupe’s flowing silhouette, the elegantly sloping rear profile and those powerful haunches. It’s beautifully proportioned with the long bonnet and cockpit giving way to a stubby, crisply styled rear end. Viewed from the rear, the car appears as wide and low-slung as it feels from inside the snug two-seat cockpit. That confined space brings with it all kinds of advantages. For a start, the Meridian audio system sounds fabulous when it’s captured in such a small area. Cabin controls fall readily to hand. Everything feels within easy reach. The downside is that fixed roof neutralises one of the other great aural pleasures of the F-Type, the engine note from those centrally located, trumpetshaped twin exhausts. In the drop-top

the glorious sound of that force-fed V6 is constantly on tap. In the coupe, though, I had to resort to driving through tunnels with my window down to enjoy that sweet note, more of a bark than the purr or growl you’d expect from a big cat like this. It’s particularly sonorous when the car is switched to Dynamic mode when exhaust baffles are opened up, throttle response is sharpened and gearshifts,

“Viewed from the rear, the car appears as wide and low-slung as it feels from inside the snug two-seat cockpit” particularly when using the shift paddles, are more urgent. The coupe will be offered with three basic engine options, two with supercharged V6 engines and the flagship with a frighteningly powerful 364kW V8. We tested the entry-level version with its supercharged V6 producing a more than adequate 250kW. If your wallet

stretches to the $151,000 V6 S, you can expect 30kW more power plus some additional equipment and a 0-100km/h sprint time of less than five seconds. The V8 F-Type R tops $200,000. We enjoyed the F-Type’s handling. In roadster form it was more than capable enough for our requirements but there’s no doubt the coupe feels a bit tighter, a bit stiffer and a bit more responsive in every respect. But the ride is still compliant enough to please those people most likely to buy this car – middle-aged execs who’ve probably lusted after an E-Type their whole lives. Like the roadster, the coupe’s cockpit is snug and thoughtfully laid out. Controls are arranged in groups by function, a feature that Jaguar says mimics the cockpits of fighter aeroplanes. The leather-clad seats are smart and supportive and electrically adjustable in just about any direction, with buttons sensibly located on the door panels. But as well as the obvious advantages of choosing the coupe over the roadster, there’s a more practical reason. The boot. At 400 litres, it’s surprisingly useful and Jaguar says it’s able to accommodate two sets of golf clubs. One for each occupant. Now that’s what I call evolution. A true sports car, indeed.

JAGUAR F-TYPE V6 COUPE

Minyama image by Greg Gardner

KAWANA GROWS UP

The area locals refer to as Kawana is not a suburb in its own right, but an urban centre that takes in the suburbs of Wurtulla, Birtinya and Bokarina in the south, then up to Warana, and north to Parrearra, Buddina and Minyama. By Jemma Pearson

TAKE ME BACK

PEOPLE POWER

According to the Sunshine Coast Council, settlement of the area dates from the late 1800s, when settlers used the land for timber-getting and farming. Residential development of any significance didn’t occur until the 1960s, followed by a period of rapid growth in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The population of the Kawana suburbs has been rising ever since, and this growth is expected to continue as the suburbs of Birtinya, Bokarina and Wurtulla attract new residents thanks to ongoing development.

According to the 2011 Census: • Birtinya had a population of 314 people. • Bokarina’s population was 1235. • There were 3666 people in Buddina. • Minyama was home to 2485 people. • Parrearra had 4357 residents. • Warana housed 3512 people. • There were 5587 locals who called Wurtulla home. Kawana’s total population of just over 21,100 people make their homes on a land area of 1863 hectares.

MARVELLOUS MINYAMA

Birtinya to buy $540,000 to rent $510 per week

One of the region’s most prestigious suburbs, Minyama is a canal suburb south of the Mooloolah River. Alfred Grant Pty Ltd, a name synonymous with early residential development in Kawana, developed the once-swamping slice of land we now know as Minyama. It’s incredible how Minyama has changed in two or three generations – the suburb is now home to multimillion-dollar properties, many on deepwater canals that offer unrestricted ocean access.

KAWANA’S HEALTHY FUTURE

Just a few years before the 2011 Census recorded a humble population of 314 people, the suburb of Birtinya wasn’t much more than bushland. Located just west of Nicklin Way from Warana and Bokarina, it is now one of the Coast’s most exciting suburbs, thanks to the region’s burgeoning health precinct. Oceanside Kawana is the new regional identity that will take in 100 hectares of land encompassing Birtinya, Bokarina Beach and a future town centre and commercial precinct. Also part of Oceanside Kawana is the multibillion-dollar Health Hub and Kawana Health Campus. According to developer Stockland, once completed, the project is expected to create around 12,000 ongoing jobs and contribute $828 million to the local and state economy each year. The Health Hub is a 17-hectare purpose-built zone meticulously planned to accommodate a range of complementary business uses. Its neighbours are the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, and the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital, which incorporates the Skills and Academic Research Centre, a

partnership between the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service and a range or tertiary and research providers. The private hospital is up and running with 200 overnight and day beds. Owned and operated by Ramsay Health Care, it will treat public patients, while the public hospital is under construction. A range of medical and surgical services are offered at the private hospital including orthopaedics; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology; urology; oncology; and day chemotherapy services. The cranes in the skyline that commuters have been seeing along Nicklin Way are being used to create the public hospital. This hospital is scheduled to open next year with 450 beds, and will eventually be expanded to offer a total of 900 beds. The $1.8 billion project is an initiative of the State Government, and the development of it means about 10,000 patients each year will not have to travel to Brisbane for treatment. The public hospital will offer emergency services; comprehensive cancer treatment; specialised medical and surgical services; maternity, rehabilitation and renal services; a mental health unit and more.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Is it a coincidence? I’m coming back and the waves should be pumping! My best advice is head to Noosa with the 1000 other surfers - that should be fun…not! Or head to Double Island. Additionally, get set to watch the Quiksilver Pro as those guys will tear it apart. So all in all some good options ahead. Well, the snowboarding trip was as always a lot of fun and for the life of me 80km on the speed run was my limit. I think larger kahunas are required. Certainly gets the heart pumping. If any of you are heading to Japan you are about to score big time. 170 cm is predicted so enjoy.

FISHING REPORT

with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: You’ll see bait scattering around the Motorway Bridge pylons, it’s well worth casting a lure at them. You’ll get some quality whiting and small bream on worms and yabbies along the Twin Waters banks. There are a few mud crabs around the Bli Bli Islands. Mangrove jack is still on the prowl in the hot humid weather. SURF: Go to Pincushion for tailor in the early morning, casting slugs. There are bream and whiting in the gutter along Maroochy Beach on the rising tide. Dart and f athead can be found along North Shore.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] This week sees rams pulled in opposing directions. The Uranus/Pluto square activates your selfish side and your ‘take-no-prisoners’ approach, and you’ll feel compelled to remove the dead wood from your life (in the form of a person, job or outdated belief).

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Bulls – are you bored to bits? This week’s stars urge you to stretch yourself in dynamic new directions. Keep what’s working in your life but don’t be afraid to discard people, possessions or projects past their used-by date. And don’t underestimate the importance of networking.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] With the solar eclipse (plus Mercury and Neptune) stirring up your life-direction zone, are you feeling confused about the future? It’s time to apply for a promotion, take on a second job, start a course of study, accept a volunteer position or completely change vocation.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] For many exasperated crabs, a close relationship remains stuck in a time-warp where it’s difficult to change. Difficult – but not impossible. A shift in perspective is required. Draw on your strength and charge back into the battleground.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Avoid the temptation to fly off the handle this week. If you try to control or manipulate others, then you’re in for an intense and tumultuous time. For some attached lions – your love life gets a welcome boost as the eclipse stimulates your sensuality zone.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] You’re at your fastidious best (and fussy worst) as the planets push your perfectionist button. By all means do things well, but don’t be too obsessive in the process. This week’s stars are intense and unpredictable so pace yourself, and resist the urge to be too regimented.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Problems you had back in December surface again, courtesy of the Uranus/Pluto square. You think you’re dealing with them but are you being diplomatic or indecisive? It’s time to be clear in your dealings with others, and don’t waste time pussyfooting around.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Uranus and Pluto are pushing you to forge a fabulous new course. But it won’t happen without practical problems, uncomfortable disruptions and emotional pain. Transformation is the name of the game as you leave the familiar behind, and venture into uncharted territory.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] This week’s Uranus/Pluto square compels you to examine your life in detail; keep what’s working, and change what isn’t. It particularly fires up your finance zone so don’t let a child, teenager or friend talk you into buying something that you really don’t need.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] You long to change something in your life – but it never seems to be the ‘right’ time. Stop being stubborn and making ridiculous excuses. Grab the goat by the horns and initiate overdue changes (especially at home) … before Uranus and Pluto step in and do it for you!

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Unpredictable Uranus sends disruptions in your direction – and, at the same time, Pluto demands that you let go of old behaviours and find a new template. The only certainty at the moment is change. You need to keep up to speed with money matters

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Many Pisceans will receive an unwelcome reality check this week, as a cherished goal or financial dream comes crashing to the ground. In order to repair the situation, you need to get the balance right between being practically realistic and creatively optimistic.

THE L AST W ORD

COST VS WORTH Richard O’Leary on how the turning of the political tide impacts us on the Coast.

A

s far as political opportunities go, it didn’t get much better than the position the LNP found itself in on the Sunshine Coast in the first term of the Newman government. Five ministers and the Speaker, coupled with a conservative federal government and a mayor elected to build a stronger economy. It seemed like all the stars had finally aligned for the Sunshine Coast to get some of those major projects off the ground, which the region had been waiting so long for. But now when we look back at those three years, can they be described as anything but an opportunity lost? I asked the Member for Kawana, and former Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie that question during a recent interview (for the record Mr Bleijie is a distant relative of mine. His mother is a

cousin of my father – and I used to joke after some of his more controversial decisions that we were getting more distant by the day). He responded by saying, “Our biggest issue was the [state] government didn’t have any money, the government was broke. The government is the people’s government and the people, through the government, were broke.

It seemed like all the stars had finally aligned for the Sunshine Coast to get some of those major projects off the ground

We knew it was bad; we didn’t know it was that bad.” Which meant economic game changers like duplicating the rail line from Beerburrum to Landsborough, at a cost of $480 million, had to wait – the cost was deemed too high. Ironically, those same six LNP members, just days before seeking a second term for the Newman government, promised to deliver that project, fully-funded through asset sales. But with the loss of that election, it seems further away than ever from becoming a reality. As the saying goes – it’s not always how much something costs, it’s how much something is worth that matters. The region may well be counting the cost of not adopting that approach for many years to come. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au
