We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

f you’ve ever rung in sick saying you’ve got the flu and then turned up the next day with a bit of a sore throat and a sniffle, you may well want to come up with a better excuse in the future after reading this week’s cover story. If you really have the flu you aren’t going back to work the next day or the day after that – it’s a serious virus which kills up to half-a-million people a year across the world. We take a look at the flu and the debate over whether or not to get vaccinated. Also this week, we catch up with Peter Wellington, the man dubbed the ‘kingmaker’, we meet a photographer who is always seeing double, and The Last Word argues for a national day for tree climbing. As always, there’s plenty of property, fashion, helpful hints on beauty and life, we road test the latest Mini Cooper and there’s a great photo of the week at the back of the mag. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

FRUITS OF HER LABOUR

There’s no better place to live than the Coast says Helen Brierty, owner of the award-winning Spirit House restaurant in Yandina.

Q. First job? A. Aged 15, a waitress/kitchen hand/

default, increasing employment opportunities, is continually frustrating.

Q. Best day in your life? A. The day I met Peter. He opened the

housemaid at a Victorian beach guest house during my school holidays. The money earned over three to four years paid for my first car, a Hillman Minx, and helped with university fees. The work skills I learned are as relevant now as then. This basic job was the best training, for life as well as work.

door to a long life of laughter, learning and adventure.

Q.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point?

A.

One that stands out is our first flight to Thailand in the early 1980s. We felt so at home there and the Thai friends we made became part of our extended family.

Q. Your family includes… A. Husband, Peter, sons Acland and

Q. When are you happiest? A. At the end of each day – chatting

Blake, their wonderfully supportive Balinese wives, two teenage grandchildren and a ‘grandtoddler’.

Q. Favourite book? What are you reading now?

A. A lifelong, avid reader, I have many favourite books, but one which always sits by my bedside so that I can reread snatches every so often is Pentimento by Lillian Hellman. Currently reading Helen Garner’s This House of Grief.

Q. Favourite song? A. Classical music is my favourite. During Happy Hour each evening we play a mixture of jazz, world and blues.

Q. Best advice you’ve been given? A. You can teach yourself anything if you can read. This from my parents who both left school aged 12, during the Depression, and taught themselves so

It’s the reason we live here, so make it count...

many work and life skills, which they applied successfully in their business and personal life.

Q. How long have you lived on the Sunshine Coast?

A. We moved here from Melbourne in 1976 and started Misty’s restaurant at Montville, which then consisted of a general store, an art gallery and pottery, plus a one-room primary school of about 30 kids, which our sons still recall with fond nostalgia.

Q. Why do you live here? A. Can you think of a better place to live?

Q.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast?

A. Our Buderim home and garden. Q. Where do you take visitors when they come to the Coast?

A. All over – Mooloolaba Spit, Kondalilla Falls, Maleny, Noosa – whatever takes their daily fancy. Throw in the eclectic variety of local restaurants and cafes and there is something here to appeal to every visitor.

Q.

If you could change one thing on the Coast what would it be?

A. Like every small business owner on this Coast, I wish our local Council was more flexible and supportive. Small business is the backbone of this Coast’s prosperity, but the bureaucratic obstacles to growing a business and therefore, by

quietly with Peter over a bottle of wine, sharing thoughts, concerns, ideas, laughs, dreams.

Q. What frustrates you the most? A. Negativity. People who won’t open

their minds, who won’t dare to try.

Q.

If you could tell your 18 year-old self anything, what would it be?

A.

You can do anything, be anyone – just get out there and have a go.

Q. Tea or coffee? A. Short black coffee – and far too much

of it!

Q. NRL or AFL? A. As an ex-Melbournite? You’re kidding

me. Come on the Bombers!

COVER ST ORY

TO JAB OR NOT TO JAB? Influenza can be deadly, but how many of us will take the advice of medical authorities and get a flu shot this season? WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

W

endy Walker’s mother had no tolerance for the flippant use of the word ‘flu’. As a nurse, she’d seen how sick people can get with the flu — not a cold, not a sniffle, not man flu, but the real McCoy — the influenza virus. “My mum used to say, ‘oh for god’s sake, it’s not the flu’,” says the 51-year-old Pomona woman. “When you’ve got a mother who’s a nurse, they tend to be a bit tough on you. You tell them you’re sick and they say, ‘that’s rubbish’, because they’ve seen really sick people. “When I got the flu, I thought, oh my god, this is the flu. Now I get it — there is a real thing called the flu. People don’t know it’s life threatening. I was working in an office in Gympie and got the full-blown flu and it knocked me down for over a week. It was so debilitating. I thought, if there’s a needle that will stop this, then I’m going to get the needle.” Wendy had the seasonal flu vaccine in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and believes it protected her. Then in 2012 she took a trip to Thailand around the time she’d normally have received her flu shot and

10 My Weekly Preview | March 20, 2015

10.indd 1

skipped it that year. “Soon after we came back I got it [the flu] again,” she says. “I have the flu vaccine every year now. I’m going to Turkey in April and I’ve already got my script for the vaccine so I can get it straight away.” The flu vaccine is one of those barbecue-stoppers where half your friends will say they swear by it and the other half will say they wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole. So why don’t more people get the flu shot when the standard medical advice, backed by substantial evidence, is that it’s the best way to protect against a virus that causes thousands of deaths and hospitalisations every year? When My Weekly Preview conducted an informal survey of Sunshine Coast residents, about half the people questioned said they got the shot every

year with no side effects. The other half said they avoided it like the plague. Reasons given for not having the vaccine included concerns about vaccine ingredients and manufacturing processes; doubts about its effectiveness; mistrust of pharmaceutical companies after scares such as the 2010 administration of CSL’s Fluvax causing severe reactions in young children; a preference for vitamins and natural therapies to boost the immune system; the perception of being in a low-risk demographic; lack of time or apathy; and the most common – the belief that it’s the vaccine itself that gives you the flu. “I’m all for vaccinations except the flu shot,” says 35-year-old Bev Norman of Caloundra. “My parents used to make me get it and every year that I had it, I was either hospitalised or near

“When I got the flu, I thought, oh my god, this is the flu. Now I get it. People don’t know it’s life threatening.”

hospitalisation with influenza. I don’t go near it now and – touch wood – have never had influenza since. “Once I hit 19 I decided I wouldn’t get it anymore. I refused. Shortly after I had my eldest son, who’s 11, I got the flu shot. Being a new parent, I thought I should. I got sick again and so I thought, no more.” She similarly refuses it for her three young children, though they have received their childhood vaccinations. “I don’t know if it’s the vaccine that actually does it, but it’s very coincidental the years I have it, I get sick and the years I don’t get the vaccine, I don’t. I’m all for the childhood vaccinations but I don’t agree with the flu vaccine.” Incidents such as CSL’s Fluvax causing severe reactions, including febrile convulsions and even brain damage in children, particularly in Western Australia, have undoubtedly undermined confidence in the vaccination program but authorities insist it’s still the best way to protect against influenza. The influenza virus is highly infectious and spreads from person to person through the air by coughing, sneezing or talking, and by touching a person’s hands, a surface or an object, such as a doorknob. The virus attacks the respiratory system and can cause pneumonia and other serious complications. There are three types of seasonal influenza viruses — A, B and C. Type C is less common and milder, so only influenza A and B viruses are included in seasonal influenza vaccines. There are multiple strains of seasonal influenza, which are constantly mutating, so the components of the vaccine change every flu season, which generally runs from May to October in Australia. According to the World Health Organisation, seasonal influenza infects five to ten per cent of adults each year and new research by Imperial College London found adults catch the influenza virus about once every five years. The findings, based on a field study in China, found 20 to 30 per cent of children catch the flu each year. They tend to spread the virus more readily due in part to less frequent hand washing. Flu deaths occur mainly among high-risk groups – children, the elderly or the chronically ill. Globally, annual flu epidemics are estimated to cause about three to five million cases of severe illness and up to 500,000 deaths. The most recent figures (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2012) show ‘influenza and pneumonia’ at number 13 in the list of Leading Causes of Death in myweeklypreview.com.au

FLU FACTS Annual f u vaccination is provided free through the National Immunisation Program (NIP) to groups who are at an increased risk of inf uenza complications. Dr Andrew Langley

Australia, with 2719 deaths — higher than skin cancer. These figures are nothing to sneeze at, yet our flu vaccination uptake rate remains low, particularly on the Sunshine Coast. According to Professor John Lowe, head of the School of Health and Sports Sciences at the University of the Sunshine Coast, the State average uptake of the flu vaccine is close to 40 per cent – much lower than the 70 to 80 per cent needed to avert a flu epidemic. He’s a big advocate for the flu vaccine and is quick to dispel the myth that it can give you the flu. “There’s no live virus in the flu shot so you don’t have to worry that it’s actually going to infect you,” he says. “Yes, you can get a mild reaction but when you introduce anything into the body, the body identifies it as foreign matter and can react to it. But not everybody reacts.” Another reason people don’t get the shot is they simply don’t believe it works – and sometimes, it doesn’t work as well as hoped. The World Health Organisation predicts which strains will be prevalent each season and advises governments, which then instruct the manufacturers. When the vaccine is well matched, it can be very effective, providing protection against influenza in approximately 60 to 85 per cent of healthy children and 60 per cent of adults under 65. But it offers less protection for the elderly and the immunocompromised, or when there is a

mismatch between the vaccine and the circulating influenza virus strains. That’s exactly what happened with the northern hemisphere’s 2014–2015 flu season and it hit older people hard, with the hospitalisation rate of people 65 and over the highest rate recorded since tracking began in 2005. The vaccine’s effectiveness dropped to just 23 per cent because the vaccine was mismatched to the dominant virus strains. The good news for Australia is that we were able to take the northern hemisphere’s experience into account in manufacturing our 2015 flu vaccine, which will incorporate two new strain changes. The double-strain change caused manufacturing delays, which means the National Influenza

position than our northern neighbours during their recent flu season. “Based on the northern hemisphere’s history, we’ve got a different range of components that are predicted to better match here and we’d expect a much more effective vaccine.” When it comes to concerns about vaccine ingredients, Langley, a toxicologist with a special interest in the subject, says the quantities of ingredients used are “so tiny they’re not of concern”. Most flu vaccines no longer contain the mercury-based preservative thimerosal and where formaldehyde has been used to inactivate the virus during the manufacturing process, it is diluted out, leaving only trace amounts. Professor Lowe says vitamin supplements and other natural methods of boosting the immune system, such as exercise and sensible sun exposure, won’t stop you from catching the flu, but they will help to lessen and reduce the symptoms. “Those are all good things you should be doing for a lot of reasons – those things will help to reduce the severity of it. If you’re a well-oiled machine and running at tip-top and you encounter a bump, you’re going to take it a lot easier than if you’re already susceptible, running deficits and you hadn’t been taken care of – then a pothole in the road will have a lot more devastation than if you’d had your tyres fully pumped.”

SEKISUI SURVEY: OPINION SPLIT

Thirty-eight per cent of Sunshine Coast residents have a neutral opinion on the proposed Sekisui House development at Yaroomba, according to a telephone survey commissioned by the company. The survey of 400 people showed 33 per cent oppose the project and 26 per cent support it. The company is proposing to build a f ve-star international hotel, conference facilities and residential development on land it owns at Yaroomba Beach. Time is running out for Sekisui House to present further information and an amended concept plan for its Yaroomba site, after being given a March 31 deadline by Sunshine Coast Council.

A SINCERE ‘THANK YOU’ FROM SEKISUI HOUSE TO THE SUNSHINE COAST COMMUNITY FOR YOUR FEEDBACK ON OUR PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT AT YAROOMBA.

Since October 2014, Sekisui House has spoken with more than 1,000 residents across the Sunshine Coast. Since then, our team has been working through all the comments - the positive, the negative, the suggestions and the criticisms looking at how best to incorporate these into the proposal. While there is some opposition to the proposal, our community engagement program and telephone surveys found increasing support across the majority of community members.

SCEC & EUMUNDI BEEF UNITE FOR EARTH HOUR

W

ith scientific evidence stacking up, society can no longer deny the effect climate change is having on our planet. According to NASA Global Climate Change, 97 per cent of climate scientists agree warming trends during the past century are due to human activities. Australia’s surface air temperature has warmed by 0.9 degrees Celsius since 1910, with temperatures expected to continue increasing during the 21st century. These facts are some of the reasons Ian Edwards is encouraging people to look at climate change beyond simple measures like reducing electricity use. The Sunshine Coast Environmental Council spokesman says we need to look at the bigger picture. “There has been a lot of research into global warming within the agricultural field,’’ Edwards says. “It’s not particularly pretty. It’s starting to hit farmers already, with elongated drought and so forth. “That’s the thing around an environmental issue. It affects our economy. “It’s going to affect all of us in our society.’’ The relationship between climate change and farmers is the theme of this year’s Earth Hour. The aim is to acknowledge the nation’s farmers and remind Australians about the need to tackle global warming to preserve rural communities and the supply of fresh food. Flooding, drought, fires and changes in pests and weeds are affecting the farms that supply 93 per cent of

the food we eat. Established in 2007 with a lights-off hour in Sydney, Earth Hour is now celebrated by more than 162 countries. This year it will take place on Saturday, March 28 at 8.30pm and millions of Australians are expected to mark the occasion by switching off their lights. Eumundi Beef will be a hive of activity for a SCEC community event, Plates in a Paddock, which will showcase the array of produce available locally. Patrons will enjoy a three-course meal created by Coast chef Amy Fulton who has worked at restaurants

including Platinum, The Boatshed and Spice Bar. Edwards says 80 per cent of the produce used on the night has been grown within 30 kilometres of the venue. “The event will be fully powered by renewable energy,’’ he says. “Within part of that equation will be technology developed right here on the Sunshine Coast that is considered globally cutting edge. “The property will be transformed into a million-star dining experience.’’ Edwards encourages people who can’t attend the event to host their own and start the conversation about climate change. There are many ways to help, he says. “Get involved. Join a local advocacy group for example. We have seven million Australians who turn their lights off every year yet our country’s actions to reduce climate change risk are far from what is required. “If people are concerned about climate change then they can work with local organisations such as SCEC to raise this issue on the bi-partisan political radar. “We at SCEC are running activities all year round with plenty of opportunities for the whole family to be involved, raise this critical issue, have a great time and meet new people.’’ For more information on Plates in a Paddock and Earth Hour go to scec-action.org.au or earthhour.org.au. Tickets are $60 per person and RSVPs close today, March 20.

ife has had its challenges for six-year-old Hudson Day, but since discovering rugby league he has gained new confidence. Day is one of 30 children who have benefited from Falcons Footy – a rugby league clinic for children with varying disabilities and special needs. Launched last year with the assistance of the Sunshine Coast Falcons, the program was the brainchild of mother and sports lover Nadine Hoffman and aims to tackle fears of misunderstanding, judgement, and bullying. For young Day, it has opened the door to joining the Nambour Crushers Rugby League Club. “It has not only provided a safe space for children of different abilities to play sport and get active, but it has also given dads the chance to take their child to a football game, which is something that many never thought would be possible,’’ Hoffman says. “(It) provides a stepping stone for children with autism and special needs to transition with confidence and skills to

their local junior league club.’’ This year Falcons Footy will hold nine clinics before each Sunshine Coast Falcons home game. Participants will be coached by Falcons coach Glen Dreger, NRL Games Development Sunshine Coast’s Steve Belsham and his team plus Falcons players. “Last year it was in it’s infancy stages but this year we decided it is something that’s needed for families and kids and to give them more of a team feeling,’’ Hoffman says. The program will kick off on March 29. To find out more information or to register your child email falconsfootyleague@gmail.com

The second, entitled Responsible Much? is a student collection exploring the issues of sustainability and tourism in Queensland. USC Tourism, Leisure and Events lecturer Dr Vikki Shaffer says students were encouraged to look beyond the classroom to explore sustainability and sustainable tourism. “This exhibition aims to stimulate discussion about this pressing issue by examining the physical, socio-cultural and economic impacts of sustainable tourism and a future consistent with natural, social and community values,’’ she says. THE INTERVIEW

IN POLE POSITION

In delivering government for Labor did Peter Wellington push hard enough for the Sunshine Coast? By Richard O’Leary

Q.

The LNP was ropeable about the last time you delivered government to Labor, do you expect any repercussions for the Division of Nicklin from the next LNP government about your latest decision?

Didn’t operate that way back in ‘98. People may say you could have brought the government, could have brought the Labor Party, and got all these… look I don’t operate that way. I believe there’s goodwill there and I’m hopeful. We’ll just see how things go.

A.

Look Richard, I don’t know. Look, I’ve done it for the right reasons.

Q.

One of your conditions is a cost-benefit analysis of the rail duplication – is that because you think the case is so overwhelming that it will lead to the next step which is funding? Or is it because you haven’t made up your mind about its benefits?

Q. How does the title of Kingmaker sit with you? A. It doesn’t sit with me well at all, because I made it

very clear that when I chose to support Annastacia to form government, my view is she’s the Premier, her ministers are the ministers of their portfolios, and I’m one of those 89 members. It’s not the case that everyone has to run everything past me, I think that’s certainly not the way I want to operate. Should it be the case that I get elected to Speaker and there are occasions when I will be voting against the Labor government, my intention is that there’s no way the opposition would be able to use that to say ‘Oh, he’s voted against the government, now we want to move a vote of no confidence in the government.’ I think it’s a whole new world, and I think it will be good for Queensland.

A. I’m not convinced of anything. I believe it’s one of

IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU

the most important infrastructure projects on the Sunshine Coast. Others may disagree. My view is that if we can continue the duplication of the rail line to the Sunshine Coast that will drive a whole range of growth. I think there is a whole range of significant economic benefits which will flow from that fast train network.

Q. You came up with 19 conditions to deliver

government to Labor – how did you come up with those?

A.

Annastacia and I had a discussion on a number of issues, and I said ‘Look, these are issues I’m concerned about’, she went away and came back with a letter and responded to them. A lot of those issues I’ve been involved with, and some of them are outside my electorate.

Q.

How concrete are these conditions – what timelines have been applied?

A.

No. I work on the basic principle that I take a person for their word, I take a person how I find them, and I believe there’s goodwill between Annastacia and myself and her ministers. I’m not about – although I’m a former solicitor – getting a signed contract, making sure

every loophole is covered and there’s every condition and sub-clause and you can’t get out of it. That’s not how I operate. I know other people might. We had an exchange of letters on a range of issues and I realise some of those may be difficult to deliver.

Q.

Looking through those 19 conditions there’s a lot words like seek, look, review, but no dollars attached to anything that I can see, other than more resources for independent MPs in minority governments – do you understand why some people are suggesting you may have sold the region short?

A. Look, I could have said ‘do this or else’, held a

shotgun to her head and said ‘I’ll only support you if you do this, this and this’, but I’ve never operated that way.

No Salesmen! No Hype!

Q.

The obvious question is why wouldn’t you just ask for some money for the rail duplication?

A. I don’t know the finer details of the finances. I

believe there’s goodwill between the government and myself and we’ll work through that.

Q.

What sort of parliament can we expect if you become Speaker?

A. The Speaker’s position was never on my horizon.

Yeah, it’s an honour. I’ve been madly studying precedence, rules and procedures. I would hope we’d be able to get ministers to answer questions, make their answers relevant. And I would hope we’d be able to have an exchange of ideas where both the opposition and the government will have direct input into improving the laws for Queensland. I think it will take a lot of the nastiness away because the numbers are so close. And I think we’ll see a better willingness of both the government and the opposition to want to engage with the community about their proposals. The Speaker’s position was never on my horizon.

TALKING POINT

LAST RESORT? Everyone on the Sunshine Coast is talking about the decision to lock the gates on the Palmer Coolum Resort for what the owner says is a major upgrade. But another 40 jobs have been lost and people are asking – how did it get to this point?

2. February 2012 – Palmer sacks Hyatt as the manager of the resort and removes the Hyatt signage. 3. March 2012 – After a legal wrangle, Palmer and Hyatt officially part ways. A couple of months later, the resort is renamed Palmer Coolum Resort. 4. August 2012– Palmer releases plans for a $2.5 billion resort on the beachfront, including 1000 rooms and a 5000-seat convention centre. 5. The idea goes down like the Titanic with locals and the state government.

6. Palmer says if he gets permission to build the new resort he’ll pay for the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport. 7. November 2012 – A two-tonne, 10-metre mechanical T-Rex is unveiled at the Palmer Coolum Resort – ‘Jeff’ is joined by dozens of other dinosaurs in what becomes Palmersaurus. 8. February 2013 – The Palmer Coolum Resort loses the Australian PGA Championships after 11 years of hosting the tournament. 9. May 2013 – Palmer clashes with the media over job cuts at the resort. 10. This week – The resort closes the gates for a major restoration and another 40 staff lose their jobs. Only about 40 people still work at the resort.

AAP

1. July 2011 – Clive Palmer buys the Hyatt Regency Coolum, which has 300 rooms and 650 staff. He promises to turn it into one of the best resorts in the world.

PROFILE

A THING FOR TWINS Helga Dalla reveals the remarkable lives of twins in her new book. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

“A

ngus and Stirling want to be together whenever they can be. They know they’re separate people but their preference is always to be together.” So writes Susan, the mother of six year-old identical twins Angus and Stirling Cole of Sunshine Beach in a new book by Buddina photographer, Helga Dalla. A World of Twins – Stories and images of Australian twins, triplets and their families will be launched at the Melbourne Twins Festival on March 22. It tells the stories of

20 Australian families with twins and triplets and will be launched alongside Dalla’s new World of Twins website. The award-winning photographer has a fascination for twins and triplets and has travelled Australia photographing them and collecting their stories for the book. “Their stories are so varied – some are sad, some are happy,” she says. “With some, the mother has passed away at birth, so the father has been raising the kids. Or mum is raising twins by herself. There’s a set of twins who were born with clubfoot, and their mother tells the story of how she coped for the first couple of years. There are some amazing stories.” According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2013 there were 4475 sets of twins born in Australia, and 75 sets of triplets or higher order multiples. Dalla endeavours to capture through the lens of her camera the special connection that exists between twins, a bond only their parents and close loved ones see every day. “I can usually tell within the first 15 minutes of walking into a room who’s the

shy one and who’s the confident one,” she says. “The shy one is always looking over to the other twin for support, approval and comfort.” Dalla makes sure she incorporates the whole family into her photos, taking special care to photograph the other siblings, who often feel overshadowed. As Dalla found herself drawn deeper into the community of multiple birth families, she saw the need for a global hub where families could connect and support each other. She created her website A World Of Twins to provide an online space where people can share stories, ask advice and form friendships. “They’ll take advice from anyone but realistically, they’d rather speak to other people with twins or triplets. They say people raising ‘singletons’ will never quite understand. They’d rather get advice from someone going through the same journey and experiencing the highs and lows. They are an extremely tight-knit community and I feel quiet honoured to be a part of it and to be able to share it.” Dalla is now on a mission to help

families with twins in developing countries. Through Compassion Australia, she sponsors eight children (four sets of twins) in Burkina Faso for $48 per child per month. “In Australia, they get support from the Australian Multiple Birth Association but I’m sure in less fortunate countries they have nothing like that,” Dalla says. “They just have to deal with the life that’s been given to them. I’ve always wanted to help in a Third World country, so I thought, why not help those that have double the struggle of raising twins?” Her goal is to sponsor 100 children, or 50 sets of twins, by 2016 – 100 per cent of her website’s membership fee of $6.95 goes towards sponsoring twins in developing nations. Dalla plans to visit Africa in 2016 and is hoping to take interested Australian multiple birth families along on a group tour to see first-hand the difference they’re making. MY OPINION

GREED VS GREEN

DRIVEN TO TEARS

Regressive attitudes towards the environment will cost our children far more than our current debt situation, writes Keryn Jones.

This week Sami Muirhead comes clean about her poor driving record.

A

dull and boring but decidedly thick pole is responsible for ruining my week. You see, I drove into the bight blue pole in our work basement car park and in return badly scraped and dented three side panels of my people mover. The problem is, this is the fifth accident I have had this year. I am not even sure ‘accident’ is the correct term, because in all cases I have simply misjudged how far away an object (especially big ones) or another car is, in relation to my white Honda. Everyone in our street knows it is bin collection day because I usually hit the wheelie bins waiting on the curb of the road as I do my wobbly and very crooked reverse all the way down our driveway. When the recycling bin crashes over loudly like a bowling skittle, it is a community service to my neighbours so they do not miss the rubbish trucks. Twenty years ago, I sat my driving test in Bundaberg and failed miserably. I sat crying in the car as I was about to come home to the Sunshine Coast with the promise of a promotion to continue working as a journalist for Seven Local News. Public transport was as bad back then as it is now, so I really needed to drive. The dodgy instructor threw me a lifeline and said he would give me my licence if I went on a date with his son

and also get him a signed picture from my colleague at the time, Rob Brough. Good old Broughy came through with the goods and posted me a nice black and white shot of his dazzling smile and head of curls. Then I reluctantly but dutifully went on the date with the son. He was pretty much a serial killer in the making who had no teeth. So after gulping down three wines within 10 minutes, I very quickly developed a headache and went home. Alone. But sure enough that next week I received my sparkly new driver’s licence. It was messing with the matrix. I bunny-hopped all the way from Bundy to the Coast in my rusty Mitsubishi Colt listening to Total Eclipse Of The Heart. Over the decades, I have run over a police officer’s foot, I have driven off the road because I was watching a wedding and I met my husband (who sells cars) because I seemed to always be at that car yard getting my little scratches and dents repaired. Isn’t that life for you? The girl who is allergic to driving married a guy who lives and breathes cars. Who says God doesn’t have a sense of humour?

“He was pretty much a serial killer in the making who had no teeth”

W

hat is the most important and precious thing to you in the world? I’ll bet if you’re a parent you will say it is your children. And you do a fair bit to ensure your kids have a life at least as good as you’ve had. Joe Hockey and Tony Abbott have been making much about this notion of intergenerational equity. It’s not fair for us to spend up large now and leave the children to foot the bill, they say. Sounds fair enough. But the intergenerational fairness notion is tossed out the window when it comes to climate change. Our government has undermined investor confidence in Australia’s renewable energy sector, causing investment to dive by 88 per cent while globally it has climbed by 16 per cent. This lack of vision will see our economy unprepared for the new opportunities that emerge as the world moves away from fossil fuels. That’s thousands of Australian jobs on the line. If we don’t get with the program our kids will not only cop the consequences of climate change, but also miss out on the benefits of the new economy that is barrelling towards us whether coal companies like it or not. Those things will cost our children far more dearly than our current debt situation will. The scientific evidence that climate change is a major problem that requires immediate action is overwhelming. Much of the world is acting while Australia is going backwards, now

ranking at 57 out of 61 countries on the climate change performance index. That’s worse than all major nations except for Canada, Iran, Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia. If we don’t do something about drastically reducing emissions this decade it will be too late. Sunshine Coasters have a lot at stake here. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recognises our region as a

“Much of the world is acting while Australia is going backwards” climate change hotspot because our built environment is particularly vulnerable to flooding, storm surges and rising sea levels. Those who say Australia can’t play an important role in global efforts to reduce emissions shouldn’t fool us. We are not flyweights on the emissions front. As the 15th largest greenhouse gas emitter on the planet, we emit more than 180 other countries. We must demand our leaders put climate change right at the top of their priority list. Not to do so is truly intergenerational theft. Keryn Jones is the Sunshine Coast Environment Council president, president@scec.org.au

T

he perception of Maui, the second-largest of the Hawaiian islands, as a destination for the rich is only partially true. Flights and hotels can be pricey but the island has many affordable options for food, lodging and entertainment, and some attractions – the beach, beautiful drives – are free. “There’s such natural resources around that it’s easy to enjoy yourself without spending a lot of money,’’ says Keli’i Brown of the Maui Visitor’s Bureau. “There are lots of opportunities, a lot of ways to save.’’ Here are a few ways to take an affordable trip to Maui.

BEACHES

Maui is known for its world-class beaches. Enjoying them usually doesn’t cost anything, except for a few in resort areas that have pay parking lots. The island has 81 beaches and 193 kilometres of coastline, with sands of gold, black, green, red and white. Kaanapali and Wailea beaches are in resort towns and tend to be the most popular. Other beaches are less crowded, such as Big Beach in Makena State Park. The water is spectacular for snorkelling, filled with colourful tropical

fish and majestic sea turtles. Equipment rental for a week is typically inexpensive – about $US20 ($A26) – and some hotels offer free gear when you stay there. Ho’okipa Beach on the north shore is one of the world’s best places to watch windsurfers, too.

CULTURE

Hawaii is known for luaus, traditional feasts usually accompanied by live entertainment. But those can be expensive, many starting at $US90 ($A116) or more. An easy way to get a taste of Hawaiian culture without paying a big price is to find local performers around hotels and resort areas. The Lahaina Cannery Mall has free hula shows and offers ukulele lessons weekly. Many hotels along Kaanapali Beach have nightly performers in bar areas, including Whaler Village and Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Performers also occasionally show up along the walkway between the hotels and nearby beaches.

GO FOR A DRIVE

The road to Hana is one of the most famous scenic drives in the world, a winding 84-kilometre road along the north shore that has 54 one-lane bridges

and is lined with waterfalls, incredible tropical foliage and lava shores. Another option is to take Highway 340 between Kahului and Kapalua around the rugged north-west end of the island. The narrow, winding road is a little more dangerous than the Hana Highway, though is certainly manageable if you drive with caution. The trip is worth it, filled with spectacular views of the coast, fruit stands set up by the locals and along the way, a blowhole where water spurts up through a rock formation. Watch out for the free-range chickens.

HIKING

Maui is crisscrossed by hiking trails, from easy strolls to strenuous climbs. Some trails pass through rainforests that have waterfalls and plunge pools. The trails at Haleakala Crater, a national park that requires a fee, takes hikers through a lunar-like landscape. There are also plenty of hikes near the coast. Or just start down the beach and see how far it takes you. Maui has song birds that are found nowhere else in the world and a dazzling array of colourful tropical flowers, so there’s plenty to hear, see and smell while hiking.

WHALE WATCHING

Watching whales on Maui is seasonal, running from November to May, when humpback whales fill the waters between the southern shores and the islands of Molokai and Lanai. Paying to ride in a charter boat will get you closer to the whales, but they are easily visible from the shore as they leap or raise their tails out of the water.

FOOD

Maui is known for five-star restaurants and for good reason, with some of the best dining anywhere. But there are also plenty of inexpensive, often hole-in-the-wall choices. The Kihei Caffe has a nice mix of American and Hawaiian breakfast food. Taqueria Cruz has tasty seafood tacos on its menu. Lahaina has several options, including Ono Tacos, CJ’s Deli and Diner and Star Noodle.

ACCOMMODATION

Properties that are clean and have reasonable rates include Kaanapali Beach Hotel, Maui Coast Hotel in Kihei and Napili Kai Beach Resort. Another option is to rent a condo with a kitchen so you can cook at home. AAP

Mortified first brought us the stage show, then the television series and the book. Now, the ‘strange and extraordinary things we created as kids’ are being aired for all the world to hear via a podcast. Launched in February, the series has so far featured diary entries from a teenage Trekkie, a teenager who relied on pop songs and trashy TV to survive high school and of course a girl determined to find her true love. MAKE-UP TIPS FOR THE MATURE WOMAN • Looking after your skin is you first priority. • Use a foundation that has been formulated for mature skin. • Unless your lips are quite full, it’s probably a good idea to avoid dark lipstick. • Use an eye pencil instead of liquid liner. • Invest in a highlighter pen to lift and illuminate. Many women have fallen in love with Yves Saint Laurent’s Touch Éclat, $55, from Myer. But there are other pens around that add radiance to the skin.

HAVE FUN – GO BLONDE

Kim Kardashian’s blonde bombshell at Paris Fashion Week will no doubt inspire many darker-haired fans to lighten up their own locks. Here are some tips for going blonde: • Never bleach at home. Going from dark to light will take a few trips to your colourist and good home maintenance. • Take pictures of colours that inspire but look for those where the women have similar skin and eye colour to you. • Tell your colourists about your past colour history – he or she needs to understand the history of your hair to best colour it blonde. • Be realistic. If you have dark brown locks you won’t be looking like Kim in one salon visit. • Be prepared to put in the maintenance at home – you might have to avoid the sun and surf and commit to regular treatments.

MY LIFE

YOU ARE THE KEY TO HAPPINESS

SALT RISK FOR KIDS Salt is putting Australian kids at risk of heart disease later in life, say health experts concerned about high volumes of the chemical lurking in lunchboxes. “Children can avoid consuming almost four grams of salt if parents make the right choices for their lunchboxes,” said Dr Jacqui Webster of the George Institute in Sydney. Australian children aged nine to 13 years old eat on average 6.2 grams, or just over a teaspoon, of salt a day. That’s way above the

government’s upper limit of five grams for this age bracket. The institute is urging parents to switch to lower-salt, or sodium, alternatives. Food is considered low in salt if it has less than 120mg of sodium per 100g. It is high if it has about 500mg. When packing the lunchbox parents are advised to choose fresh, whole foods, go low-salt options in breads, fillings and snacks and to always pack a drink – water is best. AAP

Naturopath Jodi Chapman says you can start creating an amazing life right now

Happiness is the key to an amazing life. However, happiness is the journey, not just the goal. Life is always changing and the goal post will always move. Only you have control over your own happiness, and it can be taken from you only if you let it. These are some simple steps you can take to make life incredibly rewarding: 1. Do something every day that you love, that fills your heart and keeps you balanced, such as a walk on the beach, run through a forest, or a swim in the ocean. 2. Be around people you love - friends, family, debrief with your bestie, catch up with a mate. Nothing is better for the soul than connecting and laughing with people who love you. 3. Have goals that you work towards every day. There’s nothing more

QUICK HITS

Short bursts of activity are a great way to add exercise into your day. Try: • Grabbing a skipping rope and jumping for 10 minutes. • Vacuuming the house – squeeze your tummy while you do it. • Running around the backyard or jumping on the tramp with the kids. • Taking regular breaks at work by climbing the stairs for f ve minutes.

rewarding than achieving something that makes you feel proud. 4. Stay fit and eat well. When your body works well, your brain works better. More oxygen, blood flow and good nutrients raise your brain neurotransmitters, not only making you happy but giving you abundant energy. 5. Be creative to unwind, reduce stress and express who you are. That may be in the form of art, music, building, gardening, cooking, anything at all that is an extension of who you are. 6. Be true to yourself. Have the courage to walk away from anything that makes you unhappy.

(improving trends in financial protection income and confidence from stronger investment markets), ASX (stronger listing revenue and management’s commitment to construct a new trading platform) and Ramsay Health Care (confirmation that its French foray is very profitable). Also, Adelaide Brighton and CocaCola Amatil provided evidence that they have the ability to turn things around after some difficult patches. With commodity prices well below their peaks, resource companies are now obsessed about minimising costs. By way of example, a key feature of BHP Billiton’s result was an iron ore cash cost of US$20.35 a tonne from its Pilbara operations, down from US$25.89 a tonne in the previous half. This example reflects the strategies of these large miners. The benefits of their scale mean they remain profitable throughout the pricing cycle, unlike smaller-scale miners with higher

production costs, which saw their margins squeezed painfully during reporting season. With commodity prices likely to remain subdued for the foreseeable future, relief will not be forthcoming. For the banking sector, Commonwealth Bank was the only major bank to report in February (the other three big banks report in May). Cash earnings of $4.62 billion for CBA’s first half was above expectations due to stronger trading and other revenue. Bendigo and Adelaide Bank’s earnings were supported by lesserquality one-off items. Its net interest margin was flat as easing deposit spreads helped to offset increased competition for domestic mortgages where Bendigo continues to see slower growth than its peers. Support for the sector can be shown in the fact that ANZ, Commonwealth and Westpac have all touched record-

high prices this year. Mirvac, Stockland and Lend Lease provided corroboration that strength in residential real estate remains with strong sales rates and confident outlooks for the year ahead. MY STYLE

RETAIL IN HER VEINS

After growing up in a retail environment and opening over 60 stores for a national fashion chain, Nikki McVean is now creating her own empire by operating two Shevita stores – with plans for more! Who or what is your strongest fashion influence? Style is about being comfortable in who you are. I find my biggest influence and inspiration is in our coastal lifestyle. We can wear so much colour. I am a bit obsessed with colour! Who is the most interesting person you’ve styled or had in your store? I love to style all women, to look great and feel confident in themselves. I do have some customers that just let me pick what they wear to every event and I love that. What’s on trend for the coming season? I can’t wait for the cool weather to come, to wear all our new winter stock. There are some great textured pieces, leathers, and knits coming though. Navy and khaki is back this winter with the usual suspects of black/white and red. Favourite item in your wardrobe? Oh this is a tough one. I have lots of favourites but my Charlie Brown dress is a great piece that doesn’t date and can take me to any dinner date.

What can’t you live without? My family. And… working. I LOVE what I do and it inspires me every day. What do you love doing when you aren’t working? When I am not working I love to have a glass of wine with friends, go for walks and read my Kindle to unwind. I am also an avid traveller. Best thing about being on the Coast? The relaxed lifestyle; we live in paradise!

MINUTES WITH...

Justin Hooper, chef Good Bar, Mooloolaba Q. What’s your favourite go-to meal at home? Something with little effort – for me that would have to be braised lamb shanks. Q. What’s your favourite produce that you source locally? At the moment the snow pea tendrils that are coming in are high quality and delicious and fresh. We use them in our salads instead of mesculin lettuce. Q. What’s the strangest meal request you’ve ever had? An order for an entrée, like a Hamachi plate of raw sliced fish and having a little note saying: ‘no Hamachi, just the garnish’. Q. What do you enjoy most about working on the Sunshine Coast? The lifestyle and being close to family and friends. Q. What task do you love being able to hand over to your apprentice and why? Asking them to get a pot of salt water to blanch vegetables then mentioning the cleanest salt water is from the small rock pools near the ocean. When they come back watching their face after pouring it down the sink is always a good laugh.

WILL BEER OR WINE TAKE THE T TITLE TO WIN THE

BATTLE of the BOTTLE Join Stuart Blackwell and Chuck Hahn for an amazing canapé menu matched perfectly with ȴYH wines from St Hallett (Barossa Valley) and ȴYH beers from James Squire Brewery

Q. Talk us through the process of creating a new dish? I consider the time of the year, availability of produce and the target market. I then start breaking down what types of flavours complement and contrast each other. For this time of year, produce such as persimmons and Fuji apples are high quality so I’ll use them in a mixed chicory salad with candied walnuts. Q. What do you think Sunshine Coast diners are looking for? I think diners are starting to look for something they haven’t tried before. They are more open to different flavours and products on the menu.

Join the debate between Brewer and Wine Maker and Yote as to who wins this battle for your taste buds Mediating the HYHning will be Mix FM’s Todd Widdicombe

RETIREMENT PROMOTION

A NEW DAWN IS RISING IN OVER-50S LIVING A new release of lifestyle homes in a rainforest setting has welcomed the first of many lucky owners.

S

et amongst the rainforest in Forest Glen, the first home owners have already moved in to the Dawn release at Nature’s Edge. Sherryl and Bob, who moved from Forest Lake, are proud of being the first into the new over-50s lifestyle community. “After a fruitless 18-month search we escaped the big city of Brisbane and found Nature’s Edge. We found an idyllic site surrounded by rainforest, yet conveniently located to all the facilities required.” The Dawn release is almost sold out, with early deposits now being taken on the next release. “Oddly enough we have another couple from Forest Lake who have also taken advantage of the great incentives we offer, placing a deposit,” says Lyn Morrison from Nature’s Edge. Sherryl and Bob did their research thoroughly, inspecting every village from Port Macquarie to Rockhampton. “If we hadn’t found Nature’s Edge we don’t know what we would have done as we had looked at everything out there in the marketplace,” the say. The contemporary homes at Nature’s Edge all have an eight-star energy-efficiency rating. This guarantees the homes will use less energy and be more affordable to maintain. The master-built steel-framed homes have a 50-year warranty and include, as standard, stone benchtops, air-conditioning and external wall insulation. All homes are freestanding and most have cathedral ceilings and double lock-up garages.

With no entry or exit fees, no stamp duty and no rentals, Nature’s Edge is unlike other retirement models. Home owners pay a weekly fee indexed to the CPI, which covers rates, water, general maintenance and management costs. There are absolutely no deferred management fees and should owners choose to sell their home down the track they will keep 100 per cent of the capital gain. The secure gated community will feature a $2 million leisure facility with a bowling green, tennis court, pool, spa, gym, massage area, media room, and caravan and boat storage for those who like to lock up and go. To those who purchase off the plan, Nature’s Edge is offering exciting incentives.

REFLECTING ON HALCYON Halcyon Landing is nearly complete, and the community that helped revolutionise over-50s living on the Coast has just two homes left for sale.

I

t’s taken Halcyon Landing just two and a half years from conception to near completion, and the result is a vibrant lifestyle community that has set a new benchmark for over-50s living. Along the way there have been several milestones, including a local Sunshine Coast ‘Glossies’ award and being recognised as the first retirement community in Australia to receive the coveted six–leaf EnviroDevelopment certification. Halcyon Landing also scooped the pool at the Queensland UDIA awards for excellence, winning four titles including the President’s award, before going on to win the ultimate accolade, Australia’s Best Seniors’ Living 2014. Now just two new homes remain for sale within the gated community. Project director Chris Carley says the remaining homes were perfect for downsizers still looking to retain the kind of quality and space they are accustomed to. “Our home owners want to enjoy the

recreational facilities on offer without the burden of the maintenance, so they have more time to lock and go travelling,” Carley says. “Home owners at Halcyon Landing have access to a range of amenities including a tennis court, a full-size bowling green, lap pool, spa, cinema, gymnasium, as well as walking and cycle recreation trail, which fringes the Bli Bli community along the Maroochy River. “The remaining new homes represent some of the best designs available at Halcyon Landing and are located within close proximity to the adjacent shopping centre. “The community is also located within minutes of the new Maroochy River Golf Club, which is due for completion later this year, so it’s perfect for golfers.” Halcyon’s financial model has made it a revolutionary concept for the retirement sector, with no exit fees providing transparency and security for baby boomers. Home owners pay a fixed weekly fee,

which covers all running and management costs, as well as water and rates charges. There are no exit or deferred management fees. Purchasers pay no stamp duty and

have the confidence that they will retain all capital gains when they sell. For more information on the remaining homes, phone 1800 050 050, or Google ‘Life begins at Halcyon’.

The original Mini was launched by BMC in 1961 and it’s now been a surprising 15 years since the brand’s new owners, under the banner of German giant BMW, re-imagined the classic brick to mark the new millennium. most remarkable and enduring of all these automotive retro rebirths and re-imaginings. That’s probably because the Mini is a stand-alone model and brand not just a cosmetic makeover like some other reborn classics (think VW Beetle). It’s still built in England and the style is still unmistakable, but that’s about the only thing unchanged from the original. In its third iteration, the Mini is bigger and slightly paunchier to the point where it positively dwarfs the original 1960s version when the two are parked together. The Mini Cooper S we tested is roomy

enough to accommodate four people – five at a pinch – in decent comfort. There’s even a reasonably sized (278-litre) cargo space. Yet you’d need to be a trained observer to tell this third-generation Mini from its two previous siblings at a glance. Yes, it’s a bit bigger and yes, it contains plenty of new technology and clever features. But being locked into the retro theme means Mini designers can’t stray too far from the original shape. To their credit they’ve achieved some distinctions, particularly inside where the layout has built upon the style of previous models. A little fussier, perhaps, but the

magine looking better at 55 than you did in your youth. No amount of gym visits, liver detox diets and Botox treatments can achieve that unless your name is George Clooney. Yet somehow, the new Mini has managed it. With the arrival of the third-generation Minis, it’s looking fitter, prettier and smarter than ever. However, maturity is inevitably accompanied by middle-age spread and the Mini hasn’t escaped, albeit in the name of giving it five doors. The first-ever five-door Mini is longer than its three-door sibling (by 161mm), taller (by 11mm) and has a 72mm longer

upside of that is the huge amount of new equipment and technology being offered as standard. Even the base model enjoys electric windows and mirrors, auto wipers and headlights, dynamic cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless start, parking sensors and a full suite of safety and stability systems. The Cooper S we tested came with satellite navigation with a vivid colour display screen, climate-control air, sports seats, head-up display and leather upholstery – pretty decent for a sub$40,000 car. There’s also a choice of ambient lighting colours plus a choice of driving modes. Slide a little switch on the gearshift surround to select Sport mode and the Cooper S immediately sharpens its throttle response and handling settings. The Mini’s growing dimensions, particularly the longer wheelbase, have fundamentally changed the driving experience. There’s still a sense of the go-kart handling that so excited us about the first Mini and also the reborn version. But this latest edition offers a different, less skittish ride. It still turns in beautifully but without that same turn-on-a-dime sensation we’ve loved in the past. That’s not entirely bad, mind you. It feels more stable, more

resolved in its ride than earlier models. Bumps are soaked up without fuss. Interior changes are mostly cosmetic. The knob for the Mini Controller system is now in the centre console and is more intuitive to use. The round central display dial, harking back to the original Mini’s speedo, is at the top of the centre stack and remains the platform for most of the

“There’s still a sense of the go-kart handling that so excited us, but this latest edition offers a less skittish ride” car’s cabin functions, from sat-nav to audio settings, trip computer and the like. Switchgear retains the iconic aircraftstyle switches on the centre stack and in the overhead panel, allowing you to adjust functions including the stop-start engine system and sunroof. The speedo/tacho/ trip computer continue to be housed in two little motorcycle-style pods visible through the arch of the steering wheel,

and an excellent, chunky little multifunction wheel it is. Other cosmetic changes include the relocation of window switches to the door panel, rather than in the centre console – a sensible change. The Cooper S powerplant has graduated in size to a two-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder delivering a substantial 141kW and 280Nm, enough to reach the speed limit in 6.9 seconds. Its thirst belies its performance, sipping an acceptable 5.5L/100km for the six-speed steptronic auto. The manual, surprisingly, is less efficient at 6L/100km. That’s achieved thanks to a suite of technologies, called Minimalism, including a fuel-saving stop-start function, brake energy regeneration, optimised weight and aerodynamics and gear-shift indicator for manual models. Sitting below the Cooper S on the family tree are the Cooper and Cooper D, whose engines have both been downsized to 1.5-litre, three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol and diesel variants. Pricing for the entry-level Cooper five-door is $27,750; the diesel will cost you $5000 more and the punchy Cooper S starts at $38K. Okay, those prices don’t quite compare to the original 1961 Mini. But let’s be honest, not even George Clooney could manage that.

MINI COOPER S 5-DOOR

Details: Five-door, five-seat compact hatchback with fourcylinder, turbo-charged engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Tech stuff: Two-litre, four-cylinder twin-power turbocharged petrol engine with direct injection, variable valve control and variable geometry turbo produces 141kW@4700-6000rpm; 280Nm at 1250-4750rpm. Features: Six airbags, navigation system, dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, automatic wipers and headlights, dynamic cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming; keyless start, parking distance control, stop-start system. Performance: 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds. Thirst: 5.5L/100km. Verdict: A classic that gets better (and bigger) with age. Bottom Line: From $38,050 plus on-road costs; entry-level Mini Cooper from $27,750.

IT’S A DATE

D

o women drive better than men? Can men actually read road maps better? Do you really know someone until you drive with them? These age old debates were behind Holden’s newest marketing campaign, which targeted singles as part of a unique social experiment. The base for the experiment was the new-look Holden Cruze and the test was putting hopeful singles to the ultimate road test. Partnering with global speed-dating

WORD ON THE STREET website Fast Impressions, the test pitched hopeful singles on a blind date in the vehicle to test if in-car tensions would make or break their future romance. Based in Sydney, the couples were given challenges such as navigating around the city using the Cruze’s technology. The results were revealed at a launch party recently where the dates were critiqued by an expert panel of judges. Research led by Holden Cruze revealed 73 per cent of Australian men prefer to be in the driver’s seat while driving with their partner, while only 58 per cent of women prefer to drive. Holden’s communications director Sean Poppitt says the experiment was a unique way of marketing the Cruze. “With its easy-to-use features like remote start, keyless entry and award-winning infotainment system, the Cruze makes the everyday less every day and lets passengers focus on enjoying each other’s company, rather than winding each other up,’’ Poppitt says.

NEW MX-5 IS COMING

The Mazda Motor Corporation earlier this month began production of the new Mazda MX-5 at its Hiroshima plant. Sales of the two-seater lightweight sports car will begin in Japan mid-year and will progressively roll out to overseas markets, including Australia. The MX-5 is a popular vehicle with production exceeding 950,000 units as of the end of January 2015. It continues to hold the Guinness World Record for the world’s best-selling two-seater sports car.

ROBOTS AT WORK

Who says working robots are a thing of the future? Audi is currently testing systems for the intelligent factory of the future. In a pilot phase at the German Audi plant, two robots are at work, independently transporting cars from production to an interim storage area. They are later required to place the

sorted Audi models into position according to their shipping destinations. The company is looking at ways to introduce more robots into production. Audi AG Production board member Hubert Waltl says such systems have the potential to significantly increase efficiency. “The autonomous transport of our automobiles could allow us to eliminate long walking distances for our employees and to improve the ergonomics of their work,” he says.

JUKE ANNOUNCEMENT

Nissan has announced the local pricing and specifications of the refreshed Nissan Juke. Arriving in dealerships in late March, the restyled sporty hatchback boasts new technology with on-trend styling and an additional engine variant in the line-up. Exterior changes include a redesigned front, while door mirrors have been revised in all grades to include LED side-turn strip repeaters. The rear bumper has a more aggressive shape to match revised tail lamps with LED light guide technology. The new Juke also has a range of upgraded safety features including AVM cameras, sensors and radars to assist in lane departure warning, blind-spot warning and moving object detection.

NEWS ROUND-UP The rental squeeze has apartments being snapped-up, while the building industry is also looking forward to a good year Artist impression – Marine Apartments

SELLING FAST

BUSY YEAR

COMMUNITY GRANTS

Avara Property Group is reporting healthy sales at its Kawana Island apartment project, Marine Apartments. Development manager Andrew O’Connor says more than 60 per cent of the 74 waterfront and parkside apartments area now sold. “Our investor buyers have simply seen the apartments as very good value for money. With regional rental vacancy rates at just over one per cent, among the lowest in the country, and 3500 jobs to be generated by the nearby Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital when it opens in 2016, there is an expectation of extremely attractive rental yields. When you couple this with historically low interest rates and our prime waterfront location, we’re not surprised at the sales results we have achieved.” Set on the last available apartment site on Kawana Island with direct ocean access, Marine Apartments is due for completion in mid-2016. Prices for two-bedroom parkside apartments start at $365,000.

Most regions of Queensland are looking forward to a busy year of home building according to Housing Industry Association. According to HIA executive Warwick Temby, “At least one segment of the home building industry is growing in all regional markets across Queensland: the only exception is Mackay. The three components of the home building industry, namely detached homes, multi-units and renovations, are moving differently across the state based on the January building approval figures. All these approved building projects will turn into work on the ground and new jobs in the home building industry for many months to come. “Home building will be making a significant contribution to growth in the Queensland economy over 2015 and also to growth in Government revenues from the taxes and charges that apply to home building”, Temby says.

A program aimed at giving budding young bowlers a pathway to success has received a boost from Stockland’s Community Grants program. Club Kawana is one of 10 not-for-profit groups on the Sunshine Coast who have each received a $1000 grant on behalf of Stockland’s Birtinya and Brightwater residential communities. The club’s president, Doug Kenane, says the grant helped establish Club Kawana’s Junior Bowls Development Program, which aims to attract and develop a range of junior bowlers for high-performance competition and provide a pathway into the senior divisions. “The Stockland grants are a great thing for the community to enable people or organisations to do things they might not otherwise be able to do,” Kenane says. Stockland Sunshine Coast Regional Manager Ben Simpson says, “Our communities focus on a healthy, active lifestyle for residents so it’s particularly pleasing to be able to support this program.”

AUCTION CHARMING, SOPHISTICATED AND READY TO BE SOLD! 661 Ilkley Road, Ilkley As you meander down the driveway and arrive ‘home’ your senses immediately spring to life as you know you’re in for something very special indeed! The serene north facing vista collides with one of the most beautiful settings I’ve seen. The entry foyer is a small taste of things to come. An elaborate formal dining overlooks the internal courtyard that in my humble opinion has to be one of the most unique courtyards on the Sunshine Coast. Boasting 12 foot ceilings, and fully ducted air conditioning throughout, space and comfort are ensured. The stunning kitchen will please the chef as it is the central hub and makes entertaining a breeze as it connects to the outside decks overlooking the views. Downstairs, a dual living situation exists with three large bedrooms, bathroom, toilet, kitchenette and living area. An extra large separate office with its own entry is perfect for the ‘work from home’ business. This is a very special property.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

So last week I get an email from an old school friend…correction…a crazy old school friend, who is living in Tahiti in a house that overlooks Teahupoo. Basically, he invited me over to do tow-in surf ng to take advantage of the massive swell. I checked if this invite was meant for me, as the chance of me ever wanting to be towed into a monster at Teahupoo is about the same as the likelihood of my hair growing back! Snowboarding at 80 km/h is one thing, standing inside a wave breaking below the reef that is the size of a house and will break you into splinters is a world I am never willing to explore. But God it would be great to sit in the channel and watch it break. Stay tuned. Now, get the golf clubs out as the surf will be ordinary.

FISHING REPORT

with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream are about in numbers just inside the Maroochy Bar with yabbies, prawns and small pillies the best baits. Trevally and f athead are taking live bait around the motorway bridge pylons and at Twin Waters canal entrance. You can get whiting to 600 grams around Goat and Channel Island. SURF: Chopper tailor and bream are along Maroochy North Shore at dusk and top of the tide. Half pilly and white bait are the best baits. You can get dart and whiting on pippies and beach worms from Pincushion to Maroochy Life Saving Club. CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Teamwork will get you where you want to go but you must be realistic about what you – and other people – can bring to the table. Fabulous professional and/or financial opportunities are around but you must work out the perfect time to strike.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Lions appear to be confident creatures but, beneath the bravado, there often lies a sensitive soul full of self-doubt and fears. This week Saturn puts some steel in your spine, so you can face the world with a steady gaze and a strong, self-sufficient spirit.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] The more intently you focus your mind, the better the week will be as you crunch numbers, power through paperwork, do research or fine-tune the details of an important project. When it comes to a family matter, avoid quick fixes. Strive to be patient and persistent.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Venus and Jupiter link up, which boosts your hedonistic side as you enjoy things like food, wine, flowers, chocolates, beauty treatments and (let’s not forget) shopping. Style-conscious Librans are the fashionistas of the zodiac, and you love to shop up a storm.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Just because things aren’t happening as quickly as you’d like doesn’t mean you’re not making progress. When it comes to finances and work, a strategic approach leads to long-term benefits. Attached Scorpios – Venus encourages you to rev up the romance.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Don’t be a flash-in-the-pan, Sagittarius! While it’s a wonderful week to start projects, make sure your promises can last the distance, so you finish what you begin. You’re also keen to assist someone in need but don’t offer more help than you can deliver.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Many serious and ambitious goats get their rocks off by climbing the career mountain until they reach the summit of success. But the danger is that you sacrifice joy along the way. This week the sun puts a pep in your step and a smile on your dial, as you relish the moment.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Are you in a hurry to travel, or to achieve a major goal or dream? Circumstances are changing quickly so don’t make any firm plans until you have more solid information at hand. It’s a super week to spruce up your domestic abode and entertain at home.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Venus and Neptune rev up your flirtatious side and your powers of persuasion are firing, so it’s a wonderful week to pitch an idea or ask for a favour. There is also much satisfaction to be gained via contributing your creative talents within your local community.

THE L AST W ORD

TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE The simple pleasure of climbing a tree should not be underestimated, writes Richard O’Leary.

I

paused as the word ‘no’ prepared to leave my lips. It was a couple of weeks ago when I had a day off during the week and my boys weren’t feeling well, so we decided to hang out for the day. We were walking back from sushi at that great little place in Bulcock Street across from the Visitor Information Centre when my eldest asked whether he could climb a tree on that narrow green strip on the way to Caloundra Library. So there I was about to reply in the negative because I thought we didn’t have time, when I realised we did have time – there was no work, no school, no soccer (until that afternoon at least) and no need to feed them – I’d just become so used to being busy that I’d forgotten to recognise a moment when I wasn’t. “Yes,” I said. My six-year-old didn’t need telling twice and he’d scaled the

tree before the last letter had left my lips. My four year-old followed, although he needed a hitch to the first fork. As you would know, it’s a pretty busy thoroughfare, and those trees are probably not meant to be climbed (which may explain the four

For half an hour my boys climbed and I felt joy at just being in the moment bench seats which surround them facing out), so my boys soon started to attract the attention of passers-by. “Oh, they look like canaries,” one woman cooed. “”It’s a great climbing tree,” I said.

“I couldn’t say no.” “All dads are like that,” she said with a far off look in her eyes. Someone else offered: “They look like little koala bears.” And that’s how it continued. People would stop, stare, smile and say something positive about two boys being in a tree in the middle of town. There were no frowns, no pointed fingers, no one complaining about public liability insurance. For half an hour my boys climbed and I felt joy at just being in the moment. Life had slowed to the pace it is supposed to be and that’s when I thought: why not turn this into something more? Why not have a National Tree Climbing Day so we can all get back to that primal feeling of skin against bark? As I stood there I thought, the only problem would be deciding when to hold it. And then it came to me – how about every day?
