OUR STORY
My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
s an interviewer, when you ask, ‘what was the best day of your life?’ the most common answer is the birth of a child. Which may help explain why as a society, we find it so difficult to talk about stillborn babies. This week we try to get the conversation started through our cover story, where we meet some inspirational parents and also a group that transforms used wedding dresses into tiny gowns for stillborn babies. Also in this edition we meet a Sunshine Coast man who turned a motorbike accident into a life changing experience – he started his own insurance company. We travel to India for monsoon season, test drive a Mazda2 and the new BMW convertible, and we have a quick chat with a budding professional tennis player who became a musician instead. As always, there’s plenty of fashion, social pics, beauty tips, life lessons, a stunning photo of the week, and a bumper property section.

QUICK CHAT
OUT OF AFRICA
Hayden Hack fronts energetic funk, roots and highlife band, The Hayden Hack Infusion. Hailing from Cape Town, South Africa, he chose to settle in Maleny six years ago. FIRST JOB? Working in a green house ‘gapping’, which is putting little seedlings into boxes as they fly past you on a conveyer belt. I did 35,000 boxes a day.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES… My mother and father who are both musicians (dad’s a guitarist and bass player and mum’s a jazz singer). My wife Ketakii and daughters Lalita and Kioni and my aunt, uncle and cousin in Melbourne.
FIRST CAR? Not including my dad’s car – a Nissan Pulsar.
WHAT ARE YOU READING? I’m in the middle of The Power of One, which takes me home in a way. I’m also reading Frank Zappa’s biography, it’s one of my favourites just because I love his music.
FAVOURITE SONG?
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Six years. I came to Australia in 2005 and was only supposed to be here for a couple of months. I met Ketakii soon after arriving in Melbourne. We left Melbourne to drive around the country and on the trip we decided we didn’t want to go back and raise kids in the city.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? It’s peaceful and you can get out of the buzz of everything. You can work on what you need to work on musically. Another good piece of advice I was given was to try and make music and get yourself known in a smaller area and then go to the city, instead of trying to make it in the city. It definitely worked. Music didn’t start happening for me how it is now until I got here. It all started here.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
Mother Crying by Bob Marley. I love his early stuff. Dave Matthews band is a big influence – I love The Stone.
Maleny. I do like some of the more untouched beaches further along past Noosa – they remind me a bit of home.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?
I left South Africa as soon as I turned 18 to go to England and follow music. My dad said, ‘whatever you do, if people want you to play music and record it, don’t even sign a napkin.’ It popped into my mind and saved me when some guys in the UK tried to take advantage of me. We were recording my songs and a guy came in and recorded new sections on guitar, which I hated. Then he gave me a sheet of paper to sign, which gave me only 40 per cent of the royalties. I didn’t sign it.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? When my wife Ketakii asked me to marry her. We were on the way to a friend’s birthday, walking through Edinburgh Gardens in Melbourne and she hopped up on a little cement wall and asked me. I said, ‘really?’ She said, ‘don’t say that – say yes!’ We were married at Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula with 100 people there.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? When my family is happy.
myweeklypreview.com.au
7.indd 1
We usually go down to Conondale to the creeks or go check out the Glass House Mountains.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Fairer pay for musicians. It’s getting better at some venues. The surf clubs are starting to get original music in, not just cover bands, which is great. There are some venues that could definitely be paying more. It’s a struggle to make a living as a musician on the Coast. It’s easier if you’re doing markets or if you’re a solo musician. I have a seven-piece band [The Hayden Hack Infusion] but I’m working more solo or in a duo or trio.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? Trying to find the time to concentrate on music. Once you’ve dropped the kids off to school, all of a sudden you’ve got to pick them up again. It’s hard to get the flow going when you’re always watching the clock.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? Practise your craft more. As an 18 year-old I was playing music and gigging, but I wasn’t taking it as seriously as I could have been. I got sucked into bar and hospitality work in England. My dad asked me when I was 12 or 13 if I would ever become a musician and I said, ‘maybe as a last resort’ and I remember him bursting into laughter. They never forced music on me at all – I sometimes wish they had. I know a lot of guys that had music pushed on them as a child at six and now they’re amazing musicians.
NRL OR AFL AND WHO DO YOU FOLLOW? I don’t follow either but I used to play a lot of sport. I was more of a sporty person than a muso. I played tennis from the age of four to 16 and was on the way to Wimbledon. I was playing men’s tennis when I was 12. I was number one at my tennis club for four years and never lost a match and it was getting boring. We realised we needed a hell of a lot more money to push tennis, so by the age of 15, I lost the drive for it and started enjoying playing music and getting into surfing and girlfriends. The music just started taking over and I realised I loved it.

Angel Gowns are bringing a little light into the lives of grieving families. WORDS: Candice Holznagel
Fiona Kirk of Angel Gowns
H
olding your newborn baby against your chest in those precious moments after birth makes everything in the world feel right. There is a sense of pride, a sense of love and you wish that perfect bubble could last forever. Emma Malthouse felt that strong bond as she cradled little Julian in her arms. He was perfect in every way and yet as she and husband Glen greeted their newborn son, they knew they also had to say goodbye. Julian was born with angel wings. Each day in Australia six babies are stillborn. What’s more, one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage, which is defined as a loss before 20 weeks gestation. To the Malthouse family, Julian is so much more than a heartbreaking statistic. The love they have for their lost son is very much alive, as is the raw pain they experienced in the years following his birth. Julian would be nine this year and although the pain has lessened, the memories of this time are never far from Emma’s mind. “It’s like life is still moving around you and you’re caught in that time and in shock,’’ she says of the loss. 10 My Weekly Preview | April 17, 2015
10.indd 1
“We weren’t prepared for our baby to die. We went to the hospital to have him and there was no heartbeat. “Our children and family came up to the hospital and cuddled him. He was passed around and I remember feeling proud that he was my boy. I wanted to share with the world that we had a beautiful baby.’’ Like many parents experiencing this heartbreak, Emma was desperate for help. She turned to miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death support group SANDS and took on the volunteer coordinator role for the Sunshine Coast branch. “I was struggling with what was normal and what wasn’t normal with grief. “It gave me a lot of strength back… I realised I wouldn’t always want to be in my PJs eating chocolate. “It’s a lot like mental illness – stillbirth doesn’t discriminate. You can have a loving family, all the money in the world, the best obstetrician, but it can
still happen. “The statistics are 10 times higher than SIDS, but people don’t know this because it isn’t spoken about as much.’’ It is groups such as SANDS and registered charity Angel Gowns Australia who are breaking down the barriers. While Emma did not have access to Angel Gowns during her loss, she knows first-hand that the organisation is bringing much needed recognition to children who are taken too early. Founded by Canberra woman Fiona Kirk, the organisation has assisted hundreds of families with their crushing grief by providing beautifully hand-crafted gowns for their little angels to wear. The gowns are made from wedding dresses and more than 5000 have been donated, keeping volunteer seamstresses busy. For many women, parting with their wedding gown is not a decision made lightly, but it’s one they won’t regret, according to Natalie Edwards.
“I can’t imagine a more lovely gift to give families who are mourning the death of a child”
She recently donated her dress after reading about Angel Gowns Australia. “I have always wanted to do something wonderful with my dress… my heart filled with warmth and the excitement was incredible. “I took the huge white box out of the top of my wardrobe and opened it with the same excitement I felt the day that I wore it. “I lovingly packaged it up and felt no sadness saying a quick goodbye as I knew this amazing dress was going to live in heaven. “I can’t imagine a more lovely gift to give families who are mourning the death of a child. “This was something I didn’t even have to think twice about... it just felt right.” Thanks to women like Edwards, in the 12 months since Angel Gowns Australia was formed, 4000 packages have been delivered to hospitals throughout the country – Sunshine Coast Private Hospital included. Nambour General Hospital is also soon to receive a shipment. Each package consists of a gown, poem card and angel pendant made of crystal and mother of pearl. The gowns are given to families with babies aged from 20 weeks gestation to myweeklypreview.com.au

full term, however the group has also made tiny wraps for women suffering from miscarriage. And with reports that mothers have been given everything from chux cloths to shoeboxes to place their babies in, there is certainly a growing need for the donations. “I’ve heard of a child being wrapped in butcher’s paper,’’ Kirk says. “A lot of the times babies are wrapped in a blanket or there were donated items of beanies and little jackets. “What we wanted to do was make sure every family felt they were receiving a gift to honour the life of their baby. “We are starting to help the family and parents commence their bereavement journey and giving them the strength. “Families have to leave their babies at the hospital. We hope we can give them some strength and knowledge in having a special time to dress
their baby.’’ No request is too big or small for the Angel Gowns team. Volunteer and Queensland director Amy Pene makes sure of this. She has driven up to 100 kilometres to hand deliver a gown. “We do urgent requests through Facebook and the hospitals,’’ Pene says. “If someone has their own wedding dress they want to use, we can get a gown made for them. “Depending on the location… we aim for a turnaround of 48 hours. “It’s about people knowing that their baby does mean something and that there are people who care. “A lot of our volunteers themselves have had stillborn babies and it means a lot to them.’’ For Emma Malthouse, the opportunity to dress Julian and say goodbye with a funeral was an important part of the grieving process.
“It’s not easy to come out and say my baby died. These babies deserve a special little gown. The recognition of your baby counts’’
She says Angel Gowns assists in breaking down barriers. “If people are still unaware of the statistics, that says it’s such an unspoken grief. “It’s hard. It’s not easy to come out and say my baby died. “These babies deserve a special little gown. The recognition of your baby counts.’’
THE WRITER’S PERSONAL STORY I clearly remember the words: “I’m sorry. This baby has no heartbeat.’’ I knew it was coming seconds before the words left her mouth. My husband was in shock. I remember watching him as he stood there not quite understanding what was happening. I felt that I had let him down. I felt that my body had let me down. It took a few moments for the first tear to roll down my face. It would be the first of thousands in the months to come. I was only 13 weeks. I know this is no comparison to some people’s heartbreaking situations. It didn’t make it any easier. Nor did the well-meaning comments: “It wasn’t meant to be. It’s nature’s way. You’ll move on.’’

11.indd 1
As time went on, I was expected to function as normal. Life went on but I couldn’t keep up. What I didn’t expect was to feel embarrassed – to feel judged. Many people don’t know how to deal with miscarriage. The number of stillborn babies – or babies lost to miscarriage – is higher than the national road toll and yet there is a stigma still attached to this very real issue. Even now two years on, I still see the hesitation in people when I mention my miscarriage. I believe it’s because they don’t know what to say. Unless you’ve experienced the loss or have lived through the loss with someone close to you, I don’t think you can truly fathom the grief. What I have discovered is that there are many families who have suffered this loss.
This is why I now choose to talk about my miscarriage. I want others to know they aren’t alone. Groups like SANDS and Angel Gowns are working to remove the associated stigma and this is so important. SANDS provides a support network for families as well as grief resources, and works to educate the wider community, including health care professionals, on how to deal with the heartbreaking topic. Being free – if you so choose – to speak of the loss without fear of judgment or lack of understanding goes a long way in moving forward. If you are experiencing the loss of a child, know that there is help. Visit sands.org.au – Candice Holznagel

HOW YOU CAN HELP It has only been a year since Angel Gowns Australia was formed and it continues to gain momentum. More than 29,000 have liked the group’s Facebook page and the organisation has more than 300 volunteers throughout the country. But they are always looking for more help. Volunteer roles include seamstresses, deconstructing wedding dresses, packaging gowns and making pendants. Wedding dress, lace, cotton and ribbon donations are also needed.

BLEIJIE UNDER FIRE
IMAGE: SAM WALKER

Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie is under pressure after a report into contracts awarded for Queensland boot camps while he was AttorneyGeneral, found political interference at the ministerial level cost Queensland taxpayers an extra $7.4 million. The Labor Party has called for Bleijie to be sacked from the Opposition front bench.
NAMBOUR HOSPITAL’S BABY BOOM
A total of 253 babies have become record holders after the biggest month for births at Nambour General Hospital. March’s baby boom beat the hospital’s previous record of 238 births in March 2011. Women’s and Family Services Acting Director, Keppel Schafer says the baby boom kept staff on their toes. “Last month was extremely busy but our staff were amazing,” she said. The hospital provides antenatal, birthing and postnatal care including the Ben and Aleesha Harris with Forbes extended midwifery service.

BOOK TELLS LIGHTHOUSE STORY
A
hundred-and-twenty years after it was built, Caloundra’s littlest lighthouse has been enshrined in a book. The story of the The Little Lighthouse has been captured through the watercolours of Blackall Range artist Diane Somers-Cook, and the words of local writer John Bradley. It follows the troubles of the Sunshine Coast icon, including being replaced in 1968 by a more modern light with radar, removed to a park at Golden Beach where it deteriorated into a pile of rust, the rescue and the return to its original home in 1999. The two lighthouses now stand side by side, looking out towards the shipping lane, the sandhills of Moreton Island, and the Glass House Mountains, and are protected by the Friends of the Caloundra Lighthouses (FOCL). President of FOCL, Roger Todd says the book achieves so much on many levels. “Not only do we have such a beautiful book to sell to fund our operations, but we also have another chapter in the story of the lighthouses.
“One of the joys of working with the lighthouses is the pride they generate in the community. “We would like to thank the Sunshine Coast Council for both a RADF grant to develop the book and a further major grant to enable such a high standard of presentation and production.” The Little Lighthouse will be launched at the Caloundra Regional Gallery on April 18.

SOLAR FARM DECISION
S
unshine Coast Council will next week (April 23) consider a development application to build the 15 megawatt (MW) solar farm at Valdora to offset the organisation’s entire electricity consumption at its facilities and operations. If approved, the council will become Australia’s first local government organisation to build a utility scale solar farm. The development application was prepared external to the council and assessed by a qualified and independent planning consultant. This consultant is responsible for providing a recommendation to the council on the merits of the development application. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson stressed this was essential to ensure appropriate due diligence was undertaken and there was transparency in regard to processing the development application. Subject to the outcome of the application and tender process, the project will see the solar farm installed on 24 hectares of the site’s 49 hectares.
The solar farm is estimated to save the council millions of dollars over a 30-year period based on today’s electricity costs, which are anticipated to increase substantially in the future. Mayor Jamieson says every Coast ratepayer would benefit from the
“This project will see us proactively take control of our electricity supply” certainty this project provided in regard to the council’s electricity expenditure in the context of combating rising electricity costs. “As every ratepayer knows, electricity costs have escalated over the past decade and there’s no telling where the increases will stop, leaving the council at high risk,” Mayor Jamieson says. “This project will see us proactively take control of our electricity supply.
“This is certainly an exciting initiative which not only provides real savings for the council and therefore our ratepayers, it also positions us as leaders in the renewable energy space. “We will be the first council to build a solar farm at utility scale in Australia
and our residents can be very proud of the impact this will have as we strive to become Australia’s most sustainable region.” If approved, the development application will be followed by the council consideration of awarding a tender.

TRAVEL
IN LOVE WITH INDIA Hallie Campbell falls under the spell of Rajasthan in the monsoon season.
V
isiting Rajasthan during the monsoon is a rare and beautiful experience. When billowing clouds bring the first drops of rain, people rush outside just to feel it splashing on their faces. And as that rains feeds the flowers, making them bloom, and the parched earth turns lush and green, the landscape literally comes alive. I love this part of India, with its wildly romantic Rajput history – those princely clans whose tales of heroism and chivalry still echo down the centuries. It’s a land of palaces and peacocks, tigers and temples, royalty and romance. Once again, it seems, I’ve fallen under Rajasthan’s seductive spell. Delhi is the gateway to Rajasthan. I check in at The Oberoi, New Delhi, where I stayed on my first trip to India many moons ago. The chain of some 20 hotels will be hosting me on my travels. A scenic six-hour train ride from Delhi brings me to Jaipur, the bustling capital of Rajasthan, known as the Pink City for its distinctive, rose-tinted buildings. I’m staying at The Oberoi Rajvilas, Jaipur, a secluded Indian palace hotel with an ancient temple and beautiful gardens where peacocks parade. You can stay in a tented villa, or in delightful, airy rooms, set within fountain courtyards. It is quintessentially Rajasthan, from the colourful block-printed quilt on the bed, to the statue of the elephant god Ganesh outside my window. Waking early, I stroll to the lily pond to 20 My Weekly Preview | April 17, 2015

see the morning puja, when the Brahmin priest opens the temple door and rings its bell to wake the gods, then scents the air with sandalwood incense. Even off-season, there are always crowds at Jaipur’s Palace of the Winds, its famous pink and white exterior overlooking the street like a giant wedding cake, or at the Jaipur City Palace Museum, with its wonderfully quirky collection of royal treasures. The Rajput love of war is well represented in the armoury, with its dazzling jewelled daggers, and goldembossed shields. I escape the tourist hawkers along the Hawa Mahal and explore the bazaars of the Badi Chaupar, a labyrinth of alleys devoted to various crafts and trades. The lanes are packed with spice sellers, incense merchants, sari shops, flower markets, and food stalls. I give in to temptation and stop for a thick creamy mango lassi at Ramchandra Kulfi Bhandar, the best in town. In the afternoon, I arrive by jeep at Naila Fort, the exquisite private residence of the Oberoi family (open to hotel guests by appointment), with its sweeping views across the Aravalli Hills and Man Sagar Lake. As the sun goes down in a blaze of colour, a regal attendant materialises, with a glass of champagne and cucumber sandwiches. The next day, I visit the 16th century Amber Fort, ancient seat of the Kachwaha dynasty who founded Jaipur. In high season, you can queue for ages for an elephant ride to the top of the majestic
citadel, but soon, I am bouncing along on a brightly decorated pachyderm. Just below the fort is the old town and its historic Jagat Shiromani Temple, famous for its gateway, where carved marble gods and goddesses cavort, oblivious to the mere mortals below. As I enter, a bevy of village women all singing in Sanskrit are blessed by a saffron robed priest, with not a tourist in sight. My love of elephants takes me to the Jaipur Elephant Village, where a wiry young mahout is busily bathing a frisky young elephant in a muddy pond.
“It’s a land of palaces and peacocks, tigers and temples, royalty and romance”
For me, the most special place in Jaipur is the Jal Mahal, a honey-coloured 18th century royal pleasure palace, recently restored to its former glory. A gruelling seven-hour drive takes me to Udaipur, but I’m thankful to have Kuldeep as my driver. He’s a Rajput road warrior who blasts Bollywood love songs while weaving fearlessly between lorries. Arriving at twilight, I see the fairytale
beauty of the famed Lake Palace rising in white splendour from the sapphire waters of Lake Pichola, ringed by the undulating green Aravalli Hills. The old town radiates from the colourful Jagdish Temple, thronged by worshippers and tourists alike. The lanes are filled with shops with a hippy vibe. I stop off at Jag Mandir, an island palace built in 1620, and the sanctuary of Emperor Shah Jahan long before he built the Taj Mahal. When I first came, it was wonderfully ramshackle and atmospheric. Now it’s been ‘restored’ and turned into a tourist hangout. In the James Bond film Octopussy, the villain’s lair is a fantastical Indian palace perched precariously atop a high peak. Called the Monsoon Palace, it is now open to the public, and has easily the best views of Udaipur. A lone guide greets me, happy to see a customer at last. Below, the city looks like a Rajasthani miniature painting, all its landmarks in perfect tiny detail spread across a shimmering canvas. I decide to spend my last day exploring the treasures of the City Palace, where generations of madcap Maharanas have indulged their whims. The result is a series of extraordinary individual palaces, with unique features, such as a suite of furniture made entirely in crystal. It’s late afternoon as I return to my hotel. On a terrace overlooking the lake, I watch the swirling arabesques of birds in the golden afternoon light. Once more, Rajasthan casts its spell and I know I will always come back. Hair trend Remember when beauty editors were all about the balayage? This hair trend caused every second woman to head to her colourist to have her locks lightened from the tips up. But now, balayage is out and tortoiseshell is in. Celebrities such as Gisele Bundchen, Jessica Alba, Julia Roberts and Khloe Kardashian are all over the tortoiseshell look. Also called ecaille, with this technique your stylist will apply various tones such as gold, chocolate, chestnut and honey by painting it onto hair rather than using foils for a more natural, richer colour.

MY LIFE
IMMUNITY BOOSTER
FEELING EXHAUSTED?
Naturally boost your immunity throughout the winter months by getting stuck into green smoothies. Here’s a simple recipe to start you off, but don’t be afraid to play around with ingredients and make up your own blend. • 1.5 cups kale or baby spinach • A frozen banana • Handful of ice cubes • Half a ripe avocado • One cup coconut water or pineapple juice • Half teaspoon powdered ginger • Half teaspoon powdered turmeric • Honey to taste (optional) • Simply throw all ingredients in a blender and enjoy.
Know your limits to get the best out of life, advises naturopath Jodi Chapman.
A
s children we have boundless energy. We believe the energy reserves our body supplies are limitless. But as adults, we work more, sleep less and juggle career and family. Understanding where the energy comes from that gives you the capacity to maintain this kind of productivity is not commonly learned, until one day you hit a wall. You might feel fatigued and suffer from insomnia, irritability and lack of motivation. Knowing how your body works is the key to getting it under control. Stress causes your adrenal glands to produce the hormone cortisol, the same hormone produced when you exercise intensely, or when you’re injured. It’s the same hormone that produces inflammation through acute or chronic illness.
QUICK FIT TIP There are plenty of moments in your day when you have time for a quick bit of exercise. While watching your favourite TV show, jump up during the ads and do squats, lunges, exercises with small handweights and tricep dips.
Your adrenal glands also produce the hormone DHEA, which provides energy, prevents ageing and disease, and is necessary for reproduction, brain function, mental clarity, happiness, and quality sleep – all the things we need to maintain as we age to feel amazing. Pushing your adrenal glands too hard for too long eventually depletes their function, and the hormones they produce. Knowing that there is a limit, can change your life. Get enough rest, take time out to stop, relax, deal with your stress levels, and resolve issues. Support them with super nutrients during really tough times, and more than anything, be aware of your limits, to keep life balanced. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au

TALKING POINT
APP OF THE WEEK
ENLIGHT
Enlight is available on iOS and costs $3.99
SENSORIA SMART SOCK
Lovers of selfies will celebrate the launch of this new photo editor app, but it will also appeal to anyone who appreciates great images. Launched in late March, Enlight is an all-in-one editing tool offering analog and duo filters to revitalise colours, add light leaks and customise vignetting. Black and white photography, personalising, and overlaying two images are also useful tools, and users can convert images to unique street art and sketches. Social media has also been taken into account and users can make photos square for Instagram, create funny memes and design photo collages.
LATEST PODCASTS NOT ALL WOMEN
Fitness fanatics will love this invention. The Sensoria Smart Sock is no average foot garment – it can help improve a runner’s speed, pace and foot landing. The technology works as a result of textile pressure sensors which capture data that is recorded in a removable anklet and sent to the Sensoria Fitness app. The information is delivered in real-time so the runner can adapt their technique immediately. The makers claim that more than 65 per cent of runners are injured annually and the sock will assist athletes to correct their technique. The Sensoria f tness bundle includes two pairs of socks, electronic anklet and anklet charger and costs around $260. It can be ordered online. Visit sensoriaf tness.com.
A new form of feminism is ruling the airwaves. Intersectional feminism is the latest buzzword and the focus of a podcast series exploring modern women and celebrating women from all walks of life. Not all Women is hosted by Callie Rasmussen and Sarah Sahim who wanted to fill a hole in the maledominated podcasting world. The result is a segment that gives a voice to women often outcast by mainstream feminism. Each podcast ranges in duration from an hour to an hour-and-a-half and features a guest who is interviewed by the hosts. These women range from transwomen to women with disabilities and women of different ethnic backgrounds. The diverse residential offering includes residential apartments, retirement living and aged care accommodation, and a wellness centre. This is a masterplanned development with a focus on best practice sustainability outcomes.
DO YOU SUPPORT THE PROPOSAL? Sekisui House has spoken with more than 1,000 residents across the Sunshine Coast. The most recent independent research showed: • After residents were told about the potential benefits of the Yaroomba development, levels of support grew, with 74% of residents either supportive (50%) or neutral (24%) toward the development. Opposition dropped to 26%; • Greatest support was for sustainable building practices (82%) and permanent job creation (80%); • 18-29 year olds were particularly supportive of the development, and especially valued permanent job creation (94%).
Images and plans are indicative only. The proposed Yaroomba development is at concept stage only. Designs have not yet been finalised and a development application has not been lodged with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.
SEK0007C_MWP
As world leaders in sustainable development, Sekisui House has created a carefully considered proposal for Yaroomba, designed with respect for the environment and the natural beauty of the site. The Sunshine Coast has not benefited from a new 5 star hotel for more than 25 years. This sustainably designed, mixed-use precinct is the opportunity to create an iconic destination on the Sunshine Coast, and bring lasting economic benefits to the community.
Image shows crane erected onsite to the actual RL height of the hotel to demonstrate minimal visual impact from beach
This is only the start of the process to keep working with Council and stakeholders to achieve the best result for the Sunshine Coast. Our updated proposal represents a balance between the needs of residents, business groups, community feedback, Council’s objectives, and Sekisui House as site owners.

MY OPINION
PLUMP PAY PACKETS
CRAVING THE COLD
Mayor Mark Jamieson says there’s no reason why we should accept lower wages on the Coast just because we live in paradise.
Summer lover Sami Muirhead is ready to rug up and enjoy our short-lived autumn.
D
ear autumn, you arrived in a flurry at long last in the past week and I must say, I have missed you! Summer had been lingering like a hangover the day after too many champagnes the night before. Do not get me wrong, I am a summer fan from way back and nothing beats salt hair after a swim in our tropical shores. But summer stalked us this year. She was a right cow. A bunny boiler. An obsessed former flame who didn’t get the memo that it was time to move on because we are ready to move on and have a fling with autumn. It was her: not me! I was forever in a lather of perspiration with her humidity and stifling ways. I kept having panic attacks thinking I was going through menopause, because while the boss was talking about work stuff, I was just sitting there melting. So darling autumn, I am ready for our precious short time together. I am so excited now you are here so I can break out my flannelette jammies and Ugg boots and lie under a blanket and drink hot chocolate. Even if you leave too quickly and make way for your brother, winter. I am set to embrace you more
than ever in the past. I have no less than three cream coats. Yes, three. And yes they are all spookily similar shades. They take up a large amount of my hanging wardrobe space so perhaps I will be able to wear one of these coats for at least two weeks this year. Doubtful. But a girl can dream! The problem with living in paradise is that we never get to wear our winter clothes. First world problems, I know. But it is just that winter fashion is so much more flattering than summer attire. Well, perhaps that’s just because I sadly have a muffin top from eating too many muffins last winter. For the past 20 winters. But that issue is for another day. So pour a nice big fat tasty glass of warm red wine, Coasties! Head to the hinterland and sit in front of a fire place and enjoy the 15 minutes of our cold snap before the old bunny boiler Summer turns all Glenn Close and stalks us again.
“The problem with living in paradise is that we never get to wear our winter clothes. First world problems, I know. ”

ou may have heard the saying, “Nothing changes if nothing changes and if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got”. That message resonated strongly with me last week. A business person said we should just accept the average household income on the Sunshine Coast would always be less than the State average “because it’s always been that way and will never change”. I can’t and won’t accept that. Attracting investment to grow our economy and put more money into our residents’ pay packets while protecting our environment and lifestyle is at the forefront of every decision I’ve made since coming into office. I am also mystified that some believe because we live in one of the best places on earth, the family down the street, the driver heading to work along Nicklin Way or the 20-year-old catching a bus to a job interview should accept they’ll be paid less than their Brisbane and regional cousins. And we are not talking about just a few thousand dollars a year. The latest wage and salary earner figures estimate the Sunshine Coast’s average annual household income at $50,244 – more than $7000 below the State average. Taken across all households, that’s $840 million a year in lost income. The difference is even wider when
the Coast is compared to Greater Brisbane ($60,001) meaning on average, our households are about $10,000 a year – or more than $800 a month – worse-off by comparison. The lost income across the Sunshine Coast is $1.2 billion per annum. That’s money that could go towards making it easier to pay for life’s everyday necessities and towards discretionary spending to help grow the economy. It’s money to buy a piece of furniture, to upgrade the car, to spend on entertainment, to get a haircut or to buy that pair of shoes you’ve had your eye on. It’s money that will help our local businesses grow and prosper and the multiplier effect is enormous. We can create our own destiny, and Council is putting runs on the board as it grows the economy. Business confidence is at its highest since 2008 and last year almost 20 per cent of all new jobs in Queensland were generated here on the Sunshine Coast. Add in the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital employees who will earn, on average, $80,000 each year and the recently announced Youi Insurance global headquarters development where the average employee’s income is $70,000, and the tally grows. The Sunshine Coast is well on its way to becoming Australia’s most sustainable region – a future where residents are earning more and still living in the best place on earth.

BOLD MOVE PAYS OFF
It takes a lot of nerve to leave a corporate career and branch out on your own. WORDS: Sam Walker
IMAGE: SAM WALKER
W
hen Buderim businessman Tony Venning and his wife were involved in a motorbike accident in a remote island village in Vietnam, it became the impetus for him to leave a high-flying corporate career and branch out on his own. “We’d enjoyed lunch and my hands were still a bit sticky from eating. As we rode away along the poor quality, gravel road a number of wasps started following us and attacking my arms and legs. As I tried to brush a wasp away, I lost control of the bike and we both fell off.” Venning severed an artery and broke his ankle and they both had skin lacerations. They arrived back in Australia with “horribly infected” wounds and had to have skin grafts and plastic surgery. “As it transpired, my insurance didn’t cover any of our medical costs, as it did not provide cover for the operation of a motor scooter, unless I had a valid motorcycle licence in my resident country. “Even though I had a valid Australian vehicle licence, which was recognised in Vietnam, I was not covered under the policy. It was an expensive and very stressful oversight.” It was a light bulb moment for Venning, who’d spent more than 20 years working for international insurance company JLT in London, Melbourne and Sydney, developing insurance coverage for some of the
world’s biggest sporting events and entertainment names including the 2012 London Olympics, the 2010 Rugby World Cup and the Rolling Stones. He left his job with JLT in April 2013 and it took 18 months to get his own company, No Worries Insurance, off the ground. “It is a very lengthy process and one that we’re ecstatic that we achieved,” Venning says. Among the many requirements, Venning had to have the backing of a reputable insurance carrier. “It’s a very dynamic marketplace. But it’s not easy – you can’t just walk in and say ‘hey, are you going to back me on this?’”
No Worries Insurance specialises in personal and property insurance for the specific needs of the adventure travel and sports market. Venning says he insures people like himself – adrenalin junkies, sports enthusiasts, world travellers. People who want global insurance coverage so they can keep doing the things they love doing. Skiing, snowboarding, surfing, golf and cycle touring are all covered, as well as specialist cyclist insurance for road, mountain and even electric bikes for professional and recreational cyclists. “We provide insurance solutions for people who like to live life to the fullest,” Venning says. “With Lloyd’s of London behind us, our policy holders can keep doing what they love with no worries about their insurance.” He says his company, which has about 12 staff based in Sydney and Brisbane, automatically covers many things other companies don’t. Spending time with his wife and young family was a driving force behind his decision to relocate to the Sunshine Coast and start his own business. “(It’s) absolutely daunting going from a 15-year corporate job where you get a salary at the end of each week to starting from scratch, building something up like this,” he says. “But there is a huge sense of achievement. “You just have to have a certain belief in what you want out of life.”

BUSINESS AND FINANCE
TALKING TAX REFORM Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
F
ederal Treasurer Joe Hockey has released a discussion paper that has sparked a lively debate about tax. The paper points out that the tax system needs to support improvements in productivity and encourage workforce participation. In turn, tax reform offers one of the biggest opportunities to improve productivity and foster jobs growth. We acknowledge that any decisions that may lead from this paper are some way off. Hockey was adamant changes would only occur in a second term of the coalition government. The paper focuses on the ways in which tax revenue is raised and how to deliver “taxes that are lower, simpler [and] fairer”. Its intent is to generate ideas and start a broad-ranging debate.
As a result it does not rule out any ideas. Of course, this paper is another in a long line of taxation reviews with limited impact, at least in the immediate term. Despite the depth of analysis in the last review by Ken Henry, little of consequence has been enacted from it to date. From here, the discussion paper to hand has opened the debate. The next step is a green paper, due in the second half of 2015, which will consider the options available and incorporate submissions. The submission deadline is June 1, 2015. There will be an opportunity for stakeholders to respond to the green paper before the Federal Government sets out its reform proposals in a white paper and takes them to the next election in 2016. From an investor’s point of view, the review of particular taxes and concessions could potentially impact on the following: superannuation tax concessions; capital gains tax concessions; negatively geared property
HOT TIP
investment; imputation tax credits; and the corporate tax rate. Despite the review’s supposed broad-ranging scope, it appears unlikely there would be political support to make any changes to the goods and services tax. Media reports indicate, however, that there would be bipartisan support to review superannuation concessions. That said, the paper concedes that tax changes can have negative effects when long-term decisions have been based on previous rules, so transitional arrangements will need to be considered. A copy of the discussion paper can be found at www.bettertax.gov.au/ publications/discussion-paper.

TOP TIPS FOR MASTERING NETWORKING Everyone in business knows they should do it, but how do you network? These are marketer Vanessa Webster’s tips on how to network like a pro. 1. Prepare your pitch – be concise and be sure to say it with enthusiasm. 2. Pick a number – pick how many meaningful conversations you want to have at an event (three is good). 3. Ask questions – getting to know other attendees will help to put you at ease. 4. Play to your strengths – if you struggle in large groups, focus on getting into one-on-one conversations. 5. You’re not alone – if you see someone standing alone, make an effort to strike
up a conversation. A friendly smile can go a long way. 6. Leave a lasting impression – remember your business cards. 7. Mix it up – go to a variety of events. 8. Be prepared on all fronts – building networks extends beyond networking events, so ensure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date in case contacts wish to view it. NEW RELEASE
It’s the perfect time to downsize and many people are choosing Nature’s Edge Buderim
D
ue to the overwhelming response to Nature’s Edge first release, the Dawn, Nature’s Edge is now releasing the Boulevard, consisting of 13 elevated north-facing lots with uninterrupted views of the rainforest. Homes at the Boulevard will consist of two bedrooms, a multipurpose room, and double garages. All homes have an eight-star energy-efficiency rating and will be cool in summer and warm in winter. They will also be close to the $2 million leisure centre, where you can catch a movie or enjoy a game of tennis and just relax with friends, all within a two-minute walk from your front door. The developer has extended the rebates that were on offer for the Dawn release to incorporate all sites in the Boulevard, so they can start construction on the leisure centre as soon as possible in the second half of the year. There is a frenzy of activity as construction on Nature’s Edge continues. Machinery and tradies are working madly on site, now pouring two slabs a week to keep up with demand,
while steel frames are popping up everywhere. The excitement is growing in the marketplace as house sales on the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane are on the rise, perfect for those looking to downsize to a more low-maintenance and secure lifestyle where they can free up capital to enjoy travel and other lifestyle pursuits.

ON A ROLL
T
he caravanning industry is enjoying what it calls boom times, and it’s not just retirees who are embracing the quintessential Aussie holiday. “We’re also seeing that families are looking for a way of escaping and spending more time together,” says Caravan Industry Association of Australia CEO Stuart Lamont, and he doesn’t expect caravanning and camping to slow down any time soon. “People want to get back to the simplicity of life and caravanning is part of the Australian psyche and culture.” Thirty to 54-year-olds make up half the caravan and camping market, but it tends to be the grey nomads who are more visible on the highways as senior
tourists from the southern states seek out the warmer northern climates over winter. IBISWorld analysts predict the expanding seniors market as baby boomers approach retirement age will further boost the number of travellers aged over 55 so they represent more than 30 per cent of industry revenue in the next five years, from 24.5 per cent currently. While grey nomads are the most common type of caravan buyer, IBISWorld senior industry analyst Ryan Lin says some of these future retirees may be less willing to buy a caravan outright and more inclined to rent one. LOTS OF BANG FOR YOUR BUCK This week Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the MAZDA2
I
n this job, it’s easy to get swept off your feet by the expensive and exotic machines we sometimes get to drive. Less common is to be smitten with something we can actually afford ourselves. And it’s rarer, still, to fall in love with something our kids might be able to afford. But it’s happened – I’ve been won over by the new Mazda2. Just another reason, I guess, to be jealous of our twentysomethings. Mazda says that in designing the third generation of its baby car (first launched back in 2002), it wanted to

overturn conventional thinking that a car’s value is proportionate to its size. Put simply, that means small, cheap cars shouldn’t feel small and cheap. And the new 2 is certainly designed and equipped like a car costing much more than its $14,990 entry-level price. Outside, it’s the fourth of Mazda’s new models to wear the company’s Kodo Spirit of Motion design. The family resemblance is apparent – it’s crisp, stylish and modern. But inside is where the 2 makes the biggest impression. We’re used to cars of this size and price feeling a bit basic in their presentation. The 2 is anything but. This

is one of the best small-car interiors we’ve seen this side of a Benz and Beemer, and even the Germans could learn a thing or two from the Mazda. The minimalist design of the 2’s cabin is enhanced by the padded, leather-look panel that stretches the width of the cabin, punctuated by a brilliantly concealed little air vent in the centre. Other ventilation comes via three alloy-finished, turbine-style vents. It even boasts a feature we’ve encountered only on premium brands – a display of the speed that is beamed onto a little screen just below the driver’s eye line.

control and trip computer information via the nicely designed multifunction steering wheel. The other lasting impression is the 2’s smooth and quiet ride. Mazda says this car is 15 per cent quieter than the previous model. It has crammed the 2 with much of the technology (and catchy names) developed for its larger cars. There’s SkyActiv (the technology behind its engine, transmission and suspension); i-Activsense (the suite of safety features including a Smart City collision avoidance system) and i-Stop (turning off the engine to save fuel when idling). What does that all mean? Well, it’s fun to drive and frugal to own. The 2’s 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine is revvy in its output. We found the six-speed automatic occasionally tended to hold a low gear longer than we’d prefer, although pushing the little Sport button on the centre console kicks it into a much sharper mode that encourages the engine to spin more freely. Yet it boasts a thirst of just 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres – one-third better than the previous model. It’s probably not the best auto in its class, although it does the job well enough. Ride and handling are also a feature
of the 2, which feels eminently solid at all speeds. Space-wise, the 2 more than holds its own, although cargo space (250 litres) is not overwhelming, and even laying down the rear seats (they don’t fold quite flat) means larger items are hard to accommodate. Not totally surprising in a vehicle that measures just four metres long and 1.7 metres wide. And, keeping in mind the age profile
of its most likely buyers, Mazda has ensured it boasts Bluetooth connectivity with audio function, as well as a dedicated smartphone storage slot. Power windows and mirrors, pushbutton start and air-conditioning are standard, even on the cheapest Neo model. All for 15 grand? Our kids have never had things so good.
MAZDA2 HOW BIG? Small on the outside but surprisingly roomy inside. Best of all, it’s equipped, finished and drives like a bigger, more expensive machine. HOW FAST? Nippy around town and an impressively quiet cruiser on the open road. HOW SAFE? Front, side and curtain airbags, plus optional collision avoidance city braking system, make it very safe for its size. HOW THIRSTY? The automatic version manages an average 4.9L/100km, the six-speed manual is a little thirstier. HOW MUCH? From $14,990 for the entry-level Neo model; up to $21,990 (plus onroads) for the flagship Genki model we tested with all the fruit.
Let’s celebrate the good times! As one of the world’s oldest car manufacturers, we want to share our 120th birthday presents with you. Receive a 1.20% p.a. comparison rate^ plus a bonus 2 year extended factory warranty* on selected vehicles across the range.

MOTORING
THE SEQUEL THAT DOESN’T DISAPPOINT Elegant design, powerful performance and superior road presence are the hallmarks of the new BMW 2 series convertible.
T
he motoring world is a little like Hollywood – everyone loves a sequel – and the new BMW convertible really is the return of a classic. An extension of the new BMW 2 Series range, it’s the successor to the world’s most popular open-top premium model in its vehicle class. More than 130,000 were sold around the world and Australia was the fourth largest market, behind the US, UK and Germany, with 5000 sales. BMW hopes to follow that success with the new version which features short overhangs, long bonnet, set-back passenger cell, broad wheelbase and wide track. BMW Group Australia Chief Executive Officer Marc Werner highlighted the car’s design, performance and superior road presence. “The new BMW 2 Series convertible builds on an enduring concept, and takes it into the modern day. It is an
incredibly exciting addition to our vehicle line-up, and showcases advancements in technology, engineering, performance and styling,” Werner said. “The model offers outstanding driving dynamics for its segment, while
its unique design, increased dimensions, superior value and presence clearly set it apart from its predecessor. “It is a new classic, and with its versatility, undoubtedly represents a compelling lifestyle proposition.”
Three models are available: 220i Convertible (from $54,900), 228i Convertible (from $68,900) and M235i Convertible (from $85,800). Facts and figures (220i Convertible) • Four-cylinder in-line petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology • Capacity: 1,997 cc • Output: 135 kW at 5,000 – 6,250 rpm • Max. torque: 270 Nm at 1,250 – 4,500 rpm • 0-100 km/h acceleration: 7.6 seconds • Top speed: 231 km/h • Average fuel consumption 6.4-6.2 litres per 100 kilometres (automatic) • CO2 emissions: 149-144 g/km

LOCALS RECLAIM MOOLOOLABA
IMAGE COURTESY OF ARIA PROPERTY GROUP
Thinking of buying an apartment in Mooloolaba? You’re not alone, with the central Sunshine Coast proving to be quite the real estate hotspot, writes Jemma Pearson.
D
efine Property’s Ross Cattle tells My Property Preview it’s an exciting time to be in real estate. “The market in Mooloolaba in general is very good. Mooloolaba and close adjacent suburbs like Alexandra Headland are highly sought-after areas for property buyers and mainly owner-occupiers.” He adds, “The number of unit sales in Mooloolaba has risen rapidly over the last 18 months and there has been much more consistency in the volume of sales monthly for the same period.” He says that prices still seem incredibly affordable to him. “The gap between unit prices and house prices has increased to a level that will force unit prices to increase. If you are a unit buyer, either owneroccupier or investor, I wouldn’t be mucking around, I would be buying quickly. I foresee a big change in unit prices over the next two years and I think if you wait too long you may be paying an extra 10 to 20 per cent. Are units back in favour? The answer is yes!” Simon Guilfoyle from G1 Property has also been inundated by local buyers, keen to secure a brand new oceanfront apartment in Mooloolaba. “The trend is clearly for new stock versus resale, and that is mainly due to the age of the buildings,” he tells MPP. “Most buildings in Mooloolaba are 10 years old plus. The next generation are coming into line with the market, and the market is clearly increasing. Quality stock is clearly limited.” This is reflected in the fact that he is not getting a lot of listings, either for new or established property.
42 My Weekly Preview | April 17, 2015
42.indd 1
With only so much beachfront available to develop, new apartments for sale are clearly rare. “When you look holistically at Mooloolaba, there is really only Breeze [on the corner of Meta Street], First Light [in First Avenue] and the Rod Forrester site opposite the surf club,” says Guilfoyle. “New developments sites where you can build 30 metres or higher are very limited. You can’t create any more. “The demand has increased but supply is diminishing, so it will increase prices.” While he has had interest from international, expat and interstate buyers, Guilfoyle says locals are going for the new stock in numbers he has never seen before. “School teachers, nurses, doctors, accountants, lawyers, they are all local. Most buyers we have sold to have come from Tanawha, Sippy Downs. They are looking to downsize but looking for investment.” He says the buyers are motivated because they can see the local investment in infrastructure such as the hospital, and they are confident Mooloolaba is a great place to invest in. Cattle agrees. “Locals know their own backyard and are seeing potential in Mooloolaba. We have seen a lot of local coastal people buying and it’s a smart move.” It seems locals can’t get enough of First Light, the new Mooloolaba
development Guilfoyle is marketing. It will feature 67 architecturally designed apartments, and the buyers are snapping up the apartments to live in or to use as weekenders. “I was expecting Brisbane people [not locals] to be flooding the market.” But he says Brisbane buyers will come on the heels of locals, and then buyers from Sydney and Melbourne will follow. “We have four contracts in the past week [over Easter]. I have been working flat chat, which is good.” The other new development in town is Aria Property Group’s Breeze, and like First Light will offer luxury apartments that make the most of the coastal location and lifestyle. The developer reports that there has been “an overwhelmingly positive response from the market” to the 58 apartments spread over 10 storeys. More than 60 per cent of the apartments have already sold, with construction due to commence in June. “The success of Breeze has facilitated a renewed confidence in the Sunshine Coast property market,” says Aria. The confidence in Mooloolaba is reflected in another favourite coastal strip, Cotton Tree. The Retreat is a boutique development of 14 units, and while developer Rod Tate says, “we are a completely different market” to Mooloolaba, he is seeing interest from the
“If you are a unit buyer… I wouldn’t be mucking around, I would be buying quickly”
market in his development. And like Mooloolaba, it’s locals after permanent homes who are the buyers. “They [buyers] are engaging well with the product,” Tate says. “It has had good strong support.” A couple of years ago there would not have been the support, but then he adds, “I would not have done it [developed the site] a couple of years ago.” It is downsizers and empty nesters who are attracted to Cotton Tree’s easy lifestyle. “The Retreat has been well received. There is nothing like it in Cotton Tree, and nothing planned.”
LOCALS VS TOURISTS
Ross Cattle says times are changing, as owner-occupiers take over from holidaymakers in Mooloolaba. “The most interesting fact about Mooloolaba is the owner-occupier rate versus the absentee-owner rate – we have seen the market swing by around 10 per cent every year over the last eight years and it’s towards owner-occupiers. “This has pushed the rental prices up and made it much harder for renters because there are simply less properties available, creating more competition between tenants. “The other thing that happens when suburbs become more popular to live in is the pressure on prices and we have seen a huge upside recently. We have made a few record sales in Mooloolaba this year and have a list of purchases waiting to buy – our office now has a weekly meeting dedicated to deal with the surplus buyers. I see Mooloolaba as one of the best places to buy real estate and I back that statement with investing heavily myself locally.”

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Stage three of the WSL at Margaret River and the forecast is BIG – 3 to 5 x over head. Yikes! I’m not a religious man but I think God lives at Margaret River. Years ago I got smashed by the biggest wave I have ever had break on me – 15 ft plus. While I was being held down for eternity I followed my leg rope so I could f nd my board to f oat to the surface - all I found was 1 ft of it left. After praying to God to let me up he f nally granted my request. Yippee I thought until the second wave of the set. One local came to me with some fragrant herbs and spices telling me “that was heavy man.” Ok, Sunday this weekend looks the goods – light winds so waves everywhere. I think my spot I found should be all-time….and no I’m not telling you!

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] You’re keen to power ahead, but if you make fast moves and hasty pronouncements (or engage in gossip) then you could end up with egg on your face. There’s a lot going on that you’re not aware of, so do some detective work before you proceed.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Watch out for stubbornly holding a position. You’re probably not seeing the full picture. If you listen to friends and colleagues then you’ll gain a much wider perspective. Plus pay special attention to a loved one who needs a shoulder to cry on.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] You have two options this week. 1: your Leo performance skills result in you receiving accolades in the public sphere. 2: your loud-mouth tendencies land you in hot water. The key to success is learning to be diplomatic.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Insightful speech is your friend this week. You’ll get the best results if you research something and then tell it like it is. Others will appreciate your direct approach. And are you looking for work or a volunteer position? Make sure you prepare and dress to impress.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Are your aspirations for the future too safe? Or maybe they are too unrealistic? It’s important that your dreams are inspiring, but they also need to be based on your natural Libran talents. Make sure you do the groundwork and then wait for fate to step in with a twist!
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Your ability to concentrate is heightened this week, as you focus on what’s really important. Motivation is also high so make the most of it. Success comes through being passionately proactive about networking, negotiating, joint ventures, public relations or social media.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] It’s time to get practical as the sun, Mercury and Mars move through your work zone. You don’t want to appear to be all show, so make sure you can demonstrate that you are confident and capable. The stars also encourage finding fun ways to spend your spare time.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Take the time to really listen to what a friend or family member has to say. There are many more possibilities than you previously thought, and you will suddenly see a current situation from a fresh perspective. If you expand your mind then you will transform your thinking.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] With the sun, Mercury and Mars highlighting your home zone, it’s time to play domestic goddess (or god) as you cook, clean, entertain, garden or renovate. Family issues also take centre stage, and you may have to navigate your way through a domestic minefield.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Communicating with passion and precision will take you places this week Pisces. So, whether you teach, speak, write a report or get vocal on social media, it’s time to let people know what’s on your mind. You’ll also receive plenty of messages, emails, texts and tweets.

BE THE SQUEAKY WHEEL When a loved one is in hospital, it’s your job to be their advocate, writes Richard O’Leary.
W
e were seven days into a frightening hospital admission of my four year-old son. What started as a “routine” tonsillectomy saw our normally rambunctious boy mute and at times non-responsive, refusing all food and drink (and oral pain meds) and losing 25 per cent of his body weight. A nasal gastric feeding tube was scheduled for the following day when we finally found a way to get him to take Children’s Panadol (a game where he would end up doing it himself). We’d agreed on this approach with the nurse, so I was dumbfounded when just minutes later she ignored this less confrontational method and tried to force the medicine on him. “I have been a nurse for 20 years and I don’t negotiate with children,” she said. I replied: “You may well have been a nurse for half your lifetime, but I have
known my son for his entire life and I know what will work.” That’s not what I really said. I was speechless; the comeback came to me 20 minutes later. But this story is not about the things I wish I had said in life, it’s about the importance of sticking up for your loved ones in hospital. That day my verbal defence was poor, but my actions spoke for themselves. I removed my precious boy from the room when the nurse proceeded to repeat the mistakes of some of her colleagues. What I am about to say is in no way a criticism of the vast majority of doctors and nurses who do an outstanding job in the most difficult of circumstances. Many people were kind, considerate and helpful. I will always be grateful to one doctor who was so caring as he prepared my son for yet another IV drip, he even got his mobile
out and let him watch Octonauts as a distraction. No, what I want to pass on, is this advice given to me a couple of days into the ordeal: “Be the squeaky wheel”. So squeak we did. When they dropped the ball on pain medication – more than once – we let them know. When the IV fell out (and it took them eight hours to get it back in), we let them know. When the promised allied health care workers didn’t show up, we let them know. It worked. Our boy did start to eat and talk again and is now home and on the road to recovery. We are grateful, but don’t do what we did and assume hospital staff always know best. You have one child in hospital, they have many patients. It’s your job to make some noise. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au
