WE CAN ALL AGREE, 4,500 EXTRA JOBS WOULD BE WELCOME. THE SEKISUI HOUSE PROPOSAL DELIVERS 4,500 JOBS DURING 12 YEARS OF STAGED DELIVERY. SEKISUI HOUSE HAS COMMITTED TO A LOCAL INDUSTRY PARTICIPATION PLAN (LIPP) TO ENSURE THAT LOCAL TRADESPEOPLE, BUSINESSES, AND OTHER LOCAL WORKERS ARE EMPLOYED ON THE PROJECT. The LIPP also ensures that new trades apprentices are employed during construction to help to grow the skills base here on the Sunshine Coast. The mixed-use development incorporating a 5 Star Hotel, retirement living, aged care accommodation, Wellness Centre and retail opportunities will create more than 620 permanent jobs once complete. Sekisui House has also committed to deliver the 5 Star Hotel in the first stage. The project will create permanent jobs in hospitality, retail, management, administration, and health.
PLUS:
1,500 ADDITIONAL JOBS THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY $73 MILLION EXTRA PER ANNUM IN TOURIST EXPENDITURE OVER 80% OPEN SPACE WITH PUBLIC PARKS & LAKE PRECINCT Images and plans are indicative only. The proposed Yaroomba development is at concept stage only. or a while now, I’ve considered Anzac Day our true national day. Unlike its January 26 counterpart, it has this remarkable ability to bring everyone together. For this week’s cover story we talk to author Peter FitzSimons who has written a book on Gallipoli – and you might be surprised about his prediction for Anzac Day’s future. Also in this issue, we travel to modern day Turkey to explore the battlefields and the many other mustdo sights and sensations of this remarkable place. Back home, we test drive the last Ford Falcon, meet the man who fits Australia’s most iconic boot for the rich and famous, and chat with the man behind the region’s fresh food revolution. Our columnists serve up some tasty morsels of their own as Sami feels the Force and Nugget tackles the NRL. And in property we look at the latest housing facts and stats. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
IN THE MARKET FOR CHANGE Pomona man Shane Stanley founded the Noosa and Kawana Farmers’ Markets and recently launched Big Top Market Fresh in Maroochydore. He says it’s up to each of us to put our ideas for the Coast into action. FIRST JOB?
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
Working for Woolworths.
When my son was born. When my daughter was born.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES…
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
Partner Lisa, 12 year-old son Jiah, and nine year-old daughter Kiara.
FIRST CAR?
Moving to the Coast. It changed my perspective on life. My ways of thinking, and my ideas were encouraged.
Toyota HiAce 12-seater van.
WHAT ARE YOU READING? Richard Branson’s biography. He basically did things his own way. Even when people were saying his ideas were mad, he pursued them and the rest is history. He had the courage to think outside the box and try new things.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? Sitting on the verandah doing nothing.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? Ungrateful people.
FAVOURITE BAND?
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Mumford and Sons.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Something that was told to me when I was young was that if you dedicate your life to something for 15 years, you’ll be choosing what you do for the rest of your life. I’ve been doing this for nearly 15 years and as we go along in the industry I’m finding we get to choose more and more what we want to do. It’s not just this industry, it can be swimming, anything.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Sixteen years. I moved from the north side of Brisbane.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? I just love the landscape. I live in Pomona and it’s a nice quiet town, no hustle and bustle, everyone’s pretty laid-back.
myweeklypreview.com.au
9.indd 1
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Mothar Mountain rock pools.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? Farmers’ markets of course. The Big Top market is going really well. We’ve had some really good numbers through the door. It’s showing huge potential to cement itself into the market calendar. There’s still a lot of work to do but it’s on
the right track.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Lack of support for innovation. We’ve got a lot of great people here on the Coast and a lot of great ideas and we just plod along and don’t change anything. I’m talking about the community – all of us. We need to really build what the Sunshine Coast is about, and that’s a sustainable community. It’s not just to do with the environment, but economics and the social economy.
There’s nothing that I look back on I wish I could change. There’s probably a million little things, but I honestly don’t have any regrets. I’ve gone through good and bad and always come out the other side. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I believe you get through everything eventually. Everything I’ve done has led me to where I am now and what I’m doing now will lead me somewhere else.
WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE, TEA OR COFFEE AND HOW DO YOU HAVE IT? Coffee. Flat white.
NRL OR AFL AND WHO DO YOU FOLLOW? Rugby union. I follow the Queensland Reds and the Wallabies.

GALLIPOLI: THE REAL STORY The 100th anniversary of Gallipoli is a major milestone in Australian history. My Weekly Preview’s Richard O’Leary spoke with Peter FitzSimons, who explores the history of Australia’s most famous battle in his book, Gallipoli.
Australian WWI troops charging near a Turkish trench. When they got there, the Turks had retreated. Dardanelles Campaign, 1915. It has been 100 years since Gallipoli – why do you think it remains such a large part of the Australian psyche? I wish it wasn’t Gallipoli that created us as a nation, that made us a nation, but I think it was. We went as a New South Wales colony, Victorian colony, South Australian colony, and sons of the British Empire and we came away as Australians. They hit the shores, actually shouting ‘C’mon Australia’. In the Battle of Krithia on the 8th of May, Colonel McCay walked the lines and said ‘Which of you are Australians, c’mon on Australians’. It would not be my choosing that you would need that much bloodshed to create a nation, but that was the single event that helped form the nation in the furnace of the fire. The answer can be found in Banjo Paterson’s poem called We’re All Australians Now and the line is: The mettle that a race can show Is proved with shot and steel, And now we know what nations know And feel what nations feel. There was a very strong notion that a nation is not a nation until it has shed blood, both its own and that of its enemies, really on behalf of the British Empire. To enthuse the nation, to get a nation, who are we, what are we, well you needed something more than signing a document under a rotunda at Centennial Park. That was not something to grip imagination, to bring all the 12 My Weekly Preview | April 24, 2015

former colonies together into one nation, but the storming of the beaches at Gallipoli was. Gallipoli is such an amazing story, with the whole landing at dawn, the climbing of the cliffs, the overwhelming numbers, the hanging-on against overwhelming odds. Australia had a very strong notion of the underdog, and we still do, and Gallipoli was the battle of the underdogs. We were the underdogs
It’s an extraordinary thing that on Australia’s military record, we were the ones that stopped the Germans, we were the ones who stopped the Japanese in the Second World War and yet come the day of military remembrance, we say ‘Yep, did we ever tell you about the time when we got flogged by the Turks’, and it’s an amazing thing that we keep going back to Gallipoli.
“It would not be my choosing that you would need that much bloodshed to create a nation, but that was the single event that helped form the nation…”
and somehow or other we managed to hold on. In the First World War, on the Western Front we lost 47,000 men, Gallipoli we lost 9,000 men. The reverence for Gallipoli, a lot of it relies on the fact it was really Australia’s first battle. Kokoda and Tobruk reflected so much better on Australia…Germans rolled through country after country in Europe until they faced Australians at Tobruk. Japanese did the same through Asia until they reached Australians at Kokoda.
What was an average day like at Gallipoli for an Australian soldier? An average day after they landed? Some of the enemy trenches were only ten yards away. There would be grenades going off, there would be artillery, the chattering of machine guns, it would be a matter of holding on, clinging against overwhelming numbers. And yet as bad as it was, and as difficult as it was at Gallipoli, those that went through Gallipoli and those that went through the Western Front say it was no
comparison. If you were hitting the line at Pozieres, if you were trying to take Pozieres, in the latter days of July in the early days of August 1916, that was the trenches of hell. They at that point would have looked at Gallipoli as a Sunday school picnic compared to what they experienced at Pozieres. There are some amazing stories of heroism – in your research what was the heroic act that stuck out for you? Probably the first VC, Albert Jacka on the night of 19th of May. The Turks kept charging en masse and Jacka won the VC by basically going over and into no man’s land, coming at the Turks from a difficult direction, and I think he personally killed six Turks. Now, when I was growing up and I came across that story I loved it, but as I got older I love it less in terms of the glamour of it if you want to call it that, because I now think of killing six Turks equals six death knocks of six Turkish homes, and six families finding out their father had been killed. Perhaps the one more than that though is Hugo Throssell on the night of the 29th of August. The Battle of Hill 60, that is an extraordinary story. Hugo Throssell, the son of a WA Premier, leading 100 men, losing 75 of them during the night, holding on with 25 men, and again, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Australia, being feted, they wanted to put him on posters of victory parades, and him saying, ‘No I’m a pacifist’. He married the founding member of the Communist Party of Australia, and just didn’t want anything to do with war or glorifying war and he would have lived happily ever after to the woman that he married, but in 1934 he put a gun to his head and killed himself. What were the most surprising things you learnt in your research on Gallipoli? The warmth. The warmth between the Turks and the Australians. The truce on the 24th of May when there’s a thousand dead bodies between and they climb out of their trenches and they come towards each other with shovels in hand to bury the dead and they look at each other and the Turks say to the Australians basically, ‘Who are you? What are you doing here?’ And the Australians try to explain ‘We’re fighting for the British Empire’. And the Turks say ‘Yeah, yeah, but why? Why are you here?”
Much is made of the Australian sense of humour, is there any event that typifies the Australian sense of humour for you? The Turks threw the Australians some cigarettes, with messages in Turkish which said ‘Our heroic enemy.’ And the Australians threw back to the Turks some cans of bully beef and a couple of minutes later the Turks threw back the bully beef and said, ‘No more bully beef.’ And also the evacuation, the messages that the Australians left the Turks. They left them, some of them were booby traps, but the rest they left them messages, they wished the Turks well basically as they left, and there were a few funny messages there at the end. There’s a lot of talk about mateship being one of the defining factors that makes us Australians – is there any act of mateship that stands out for you at Gallipoli? It would be the Battle of the Nek which is a staggering story. You’ve got four waves of 150 men. Each wave going out two minutes apart. The first wave is
just torn apart, and again they are just torn apart in the second wave. And before the third wave, one digger said to another ‘Goodbye cobber, and God bless you’ and shook his hand and they charged over together and were killed. Another example was before Lone Pine, which was the night before on the 6th. A guy called out ‘Bill’ and he said ‘Yeah, Jack here.’ Then Bill comes over and says to the guy next to Jack ‘Is it OK if Bill and I go over together? Him and me are mates, and we want to go over together’. So they squeeze over, and the two blokes go over together, no doubt to their all but certain death. There’s mateship there in both of those instances, a tragic willingness to die together.” Do you think that sometimes, we as a nation may risk turning this event into a myth, if we don’t focus more on what it was really like? We risk celebrating it and we should never celebrate it, we have to commemorate it. And there’s a key difference. This is not a hairy chested moment of beating our chest and saying ‘How good were we?’ This is a moment of deep sorrow and the First World War was an occasion of colossal catastrophe. We lost 60,000 men in a nation of four or five million. Sixty-thousand dead, 330,000 wounded. Just devastating, we basically created a generation of widows. Do you think Gallipoli will still hold its place in the Australian psyche in another 100 years? No. I can’t imagine in a hundred years it will be as big, I’d think there would be other things that would come along. But we’ll see.

SEKISUI DECISION IMMINENT
A 5.5-metre tall, 44-tonne steel sculpture is coming to Nambour. The sculpture, made up of cogs and shafts from the town’s old Moreton Central Sugar Mill, is being installed at the Mill Street roundabout over the coming month. It depicts human f gures – a father, mother, and child – to represent how communities are tied together through customs and history.
FOOD TOURISM FORUM
Sunshine Coast Council will consider an amendment to its planning scheme at a special meeting on Monday April 27 to accommodate a controversial resort proposed by Sekisui House. The company presented the council with a revised plan for the 20-hectare site at Yaroomba after public protests over the initial designs. Sekisui House has removed three of the f ve 10-storey buildings from the development.
A food tourism forum, Food for Thought, will be held in Montville on Thursday April 30 to connect producers, farmers, restaurants and cooking schools, so they can work together to help the Sunshine Coast become a credible food tourism destination. PUBLIC TRANSPORT GUIDE
The Sunshine Coast and Queensland’s oldest resident, Monica Guy has died at the age of 108. Born in New Zealand, Mrs Guy moved to a Darling Downs farm when she was three before her family moved to Buderim in 1919. Mrs Guy was awarded life memberships to an array of Buderim’s institutions and societies.
If you catch the bus or train, you’ll want to take a look at the new Sunshine Coast Public Transport Guide. The pocket-sized guide includes a map of the public transport routes across the region, ticketing details and travel tips. The guides are available at the Sunshine Coast Council customer service centres or can be downloaded at sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
MEDICAL MARIJUANA TRIALS Queensland will take part in medical marijuana trials aimed at helping people with various illnesses, including children with epilepsy. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says there may have to be legislative changes to make way for the trials, which are also being held in NSW and Victoria. An expert panel will look at the scope of the initiative.
BLEIJIE ON BOOT CAMPS Former AttorneyGeneral and Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie has rejected criticisms relating to the establishment and the procurement of boot camps when he was a minister in the Newman government. “The paramount consideration for our government was always community safety,” Bleijie says. An Auditor-General’s report found political interference at the ministerial level cost Queensland taxpayers an extra $7.4 million.

COUNTDOWN TO AUSSIES
UNDER PRESSURE
The countdown has officially started to the Sunshine Coast hosting the Aussies next year following the conclusion of this year’s event on the Gold Coast. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has brought back the official Australian Surf Life Saving Championships flag from Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate. The last national championships held on the Sunshine Coast were at Maroochydore 35 years ago and organisers will be hoping for a repeat of the 1980 event, which saw a young Grant Kenny from Alexandra Headland take out the Australian Junior and Senior Ironman ‘double’. The 2016 Australian titles are expected to attract more than 7000 competitors, as well as around 15,000 officials and supporters. The event is expected to deliver an estimated $20 million in economic benefits to the Sunshine Coast. Alexandra Headland Surf Club will join with Maroochydore and Mooloolaba clubs to host the 101st Aussies, which will be held from April 16 to 24.
WIN News weather presenter and meteorologist Hannah McEwan explains the difference between high and low pressure systems.
S
ome of the main features on a weather map are areas of high(H) and low(L) atmospheric pressure. These symbols are usually accompanied by a number to indicate the strength of the centre of pressure at sea level. Atmospheric pressure is sometimes referred to as barometric pressure. Atmospheric pressure is measured by the weight of air above the surface at a certain point. Regions of low pressure have less atmospheric mass above a location, compared to areas of high pressure. The lowest atmospheric pressure is found at the centre of tropical cyclones and tornadoes. The pressure of the atmosphere varies significantly across the globe, and is impacted by temperature, humidity and altitude. If you move vertically away from the earth’s surface, for example up a mountain or in an aeroplane, there is less mass above you therefore the atmospheric pressure is lower. Low pressure systems can bring cloud and rain. This can cause less heating over the area during the
day from the sun, but the cloud can also act as a blanket to keep the heat in overnight. When the low acquires a strong circulation, it is defined as a tropical cyclone. A region of high pressure will usually bring clear skies and sunshine, which will allow for warmer temperatures during the day, but a larger amount of cooling at night. A high is normally associated with lighter winds and sinking of the air in the lower part of the atmosphere, which can dry out the air and clear the sky. The lines around a high or low on a weather map are called isobars, which are lines of equal pressure at sea level. The middle part of the pressure system is where the highest or lowest pressure lies. When the isobars are close together, the pressure system is stronger, therefore so are the winds. High and low pressure systems determine our local weather on a daily basis. The type of weather you experience from a pressure system depends on where you are compared to the centre. If a high is located over central Australia, the east coast of Queensland will usually experience showers, as winds are blowing from the ocean (onshore) and helping to generate cloud and showers when they reach the coastline. Winds around a high blow anticlockwise in the southern hemisphere, and clockwise around a low.
Ali Day will compete for Mooloolaba Surf Club at next year’s Australian titles on the Sunshine Coast (AAP)

PROFILE
THESE BOOTS WERE MADE FOR WALKING
As the official boot fitter for R.M. Williams, Steven Harris has touched the famous feet of rock stars, supermodels and sports stars. He’s in town next week for the launch of new Buderim store Threads 4556 to fit Coast locals with a brand spanking new pair of boots. WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR YOUR UPCOMING VISIT TO THE SUNSHINE COAST?
R.M. Williams brand. It’s an Australian icon, a name synonymous with the outback, a name synonymous with meticulous quality, authenticity and durability.
YOU’VE HAD A 30-YEAR CAREER WITH R.M. WILLIAMS. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE COMPANY INITIALLY? I arrived home in the early ‘80s after travelling in Europe. By chance, I was offered six weeks work in the R.M. Williams Castlereagh Street, Sydney store. When the six weeks was up, Mike Williams – R.M.’s youngest son and store manager at the time – asked me to stay on. I loved my first experience in retail and was eager to learn more. The craftsmanship of the boots is a unique story. It all begins with a single, handpicked piece of leather in the Adelaide factory to the template laid down by R.M. himself. Each boot goes through 80 hand-held processes, just as they always have. One boot, one piece of leather.
DID YOU MEET R.M. WILLIAMS? Yes, I have had the pleasure, on a number of occasions of meeting the late R.M. Williams. He was an incredibly generous and humble man. He often walked between his Sydney retail stores and always had time to stop for a chat and spend time with you. I was privileged to have had the great honour of dressing R.M. for the 100 Living Legends Dinner he was hosting in Sydney many years ago.
WHAT TRAINING DID YOU DO IN ORDER TO BECOME A BOOT FITTER? Training was on the job. We sold so many boots back then and fitting each boot was part of the training process. We

I have been invited by John and Kylie, owners of Threads 4556, to visit their new Buderim fashion store. I met John and Kylie at the R.M. Williams Winter 2015 Stables showing last August, and again a few weeks later, when they came to the Adelaide factory to see first-hand how the boots were made. They totally embraced the boot story and wanted to bring it to Buderim. We will be busy with three days of personal fittings starting next Thursday afternoon. In between the fittings, I am hoping to spend some time at the beach and enjoy some great local restaurants. fitted true whole and half sizes. Twenty years of fitting boots while managing the Sydney Castlereagh Street store and subsequently the George Street store was constant training as we were learning every day.
YOU ARE NOW FITTING BOOTS FOR THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE. WHAT DOES THAT INVOLVE? The Armed Forces are currently replacing the lace-up style patent leather boot with a new R.M. Williams parade boot which is a fully stitched, elastic-sided boot with a grain leather design. As part of that process, Jason Ogden another long-time employee of R.M. Williams and myself, are presently visiting all Army Units across Australia to conduct individual fittings for soldiers. This is a three year roll-out program which we will complete at the end of this year. When this project comes to an end, we will have fitted a total of 40,000 Army personnel with boots – 700 fittings is the most fittings we have done in one day.
HOW DOES FITTING BOOTS FOR THE DEFENCE FORCE DIFFER FROM FITTING BOOTS FOR FARMERS OR LAYPEOPLE? Everyone is treated the same. The most exciting thing to evolve from this project has been the opportunity to introduce the renowned Craftsman boots to the Armed Forces personnel. Country folk have grown up with the

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE WHEN FITTING BOOTS? All feet are different! The challenges are easily overcome with the R.M. Williams made to order boot service. Once your size and width is determined, customers can select from an array of leathers, colours, soles, heel styles, toe shapes, patterns and more, to create a bespoke pair unique to one’s own personal style. There are over four million different configurations of made to order boots.
HAVE YOU FITTED BOOTS FOR CELEBRITIES? When managing our Sydney stores, I was privileged to personally fit Greg Norman with his Crocodile and Ostrich skin Craftsman boots. I’ve also fitted many well known Australian and international identities with their boots including supermodel and businesswoman Elle Macpherson, the late Michael Hutchence, former politician and Midnight Oil lead singer Peter Garrett, and American musician James Taylor. Willie Nelson and Rod Stewart were also in-store and made boot purchases.
WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE R.M. WILLIAMS BOOTS? Craftsman black, chestnut and mallee boots are the boots I wear.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE R.M. WILLIAMS’ REPUTATION OVERSEAS? R.M. Williams is an Australian icon with a strong and loyal following worldwide. This is evident by the thousands of international travellers who visit our Australian, London and New York stores every week. The company is world renowned for its premium handcrafted footwear and accessories, as well as a comprehensive selection of apparel for men and women. Our boots are worn by global leaders, international film stars, world sporting champions and thousands of people around the world seeking quality, comfort and style.

3. ISTANBUL
On April 25 Australians will mark the centenary of the Anzac landings. For many, this will involve a trip to Gallipoli, where the Anzac legend began. WORDS: Mike Osborne, AAP 1. GALLIPOLI This is the reason you are here, so make sure you do it right and get a guide. While you can easily travel around the Gallipoli Peninsula and visit all the important sights, war cemeteries, and memorials yourself, to get a real feel for how the battles unfolded at Anzac Cove a century ago, a local guide adds all the necessary

background. Most guided tours go for about four hours and every second is needed to really appreciate the remote beaches, the ridges, valleys, and trenches and tunnels hidden in the undulating wild scrub of the area where so many lost their lives. You can do a very long full-day tour from Istanbul or go to Canakkale and stay a night or two to enjoy the area.
While you are in Gallipoli, spend some time enjoying the seaside resort of Canakkale, where hourly ferries dart across the Dardenelles joining the European Gallipoli peninsula with the Turkish mainland in Asia Minor. A short half hour trip south from Canakkale are
Your likely arrival destination in Turkey, you need at least four full days to truly appreciate all that is on offer in this ancient city that straddles Europe and Asia. Once Byzantium, then Constantinople, the city has a history to rival Athens and Rome. The big sights include the Aya Sofya, once a Christian cathedral then a mosque and now a museum; the Blue Mosque younger by some 1000 years; Topkapi Palace; the Roman Hippodrome; and the Grand Bazaar and Spice Market. Across the Golden Horn over the famous Galata Bridge is Karakoy and the hip shopping strip of Istiklal Caddesi topped by Taksim Square. And there are regular cruises up the Bosphorus from the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea, that showcase the great palaces and grand houses along the waterway.

4. SULTANAHMET The most famous tourist area of Istanbul, many who visit the city don’t leave its environs. Apart from the Aya Sofya, Blue Mosque, and Hippodrome, it is walking distance to the giant covered Grand Bazaar and equalling alluring Spice Market. The other major attractions in the area include the underground cistern, made famous in James Bond movies and Dan Brown novels, the massive Topkapi Palace where the Sultans ruled for 800 years, and the nearby Istanbul Archaeological museum which holds some of the region’s hidden history.
5. EPHESUS/KUSADASI One of Turkey’s must-see places, Ephesus drew the Apostle Paul in the years after the death of Christ and pilgrims are still heading there in droves. But now they come to see some of the best and biggest Roman ruins outside Italy. For fans of archaeology or Raiders of the Lost Ark it’s a fascinating look at how the Romans lived. Nearby are the remains of the Greek Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. There’s nowhere to stay in Ephesus itself but the beautiful beachside port of Kusadasi is a short drive away.
6. AEGEAN/MEDITERRANEAN BEACHES South of Kusadasi are the beach resort towns of Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Kas which have turquoise water and amazing western sunsets. The village life and food at the Turkish beaches make them unique.
7. CAPADOCCIA This central Turkish region features a lunar-like landscape, ancient underground cities, towns carved into the sandstone mountains complete with churches and and painted walls, and giant volcanic rock shapes. Urgup and Goreme are the starting points for the tours on foot, bicycle, horse or bus. Some of the valleys and ravines look a bit like the Grand Canyon in the US and are a hikers’ paradise. The other great way to see this area is by hot-air balloon. Weather conditions are conducive year round and while views of the landscape from on high are incredible, the experience of floating away as the sun rises is worth the cost.
8. HAMAM (TURKISH BATH) It’s a sauna, body scrub and massage all in one. The men and women are separate and you can decide how many extras you want. Some of the baths are centuries old,
especially in Istanbul, which adds to the experience, although the cost is usually lower in the regional areas. For about $70 you can get the full service.
9. TURKISH DELIGHT AND BAKLAVA, WITH TURKISH TEA OR COFFEE Some of the cafes around Istanbul have been serving Turkish delight and baklava for hundreds of years. They go down a treat with sweet Turkish black tea served in small liqueur-style glasses. Turkish coffee is also served black and sweet in small cups. Both provide a great pick-meup, with just one Turkish coffee enough for even hardened caffeine addicts.
10. TURKISH FOOD The quality and style vary from region to region but the kebab is a standard throughout Turkey. In Capadoccia they have a pottery kebab where the meat is cooked inside a pottery jar, a bit like a Moroccan tajine, but it’s cracked open at the table and poured on the plate. Pide or Turkish pizza is another staple. Fish is good in the coastal areas and the Turks do a great line on eggplant dishes as well as red and green peppers or capsicums. The locals wash it all down with Raki, an anise-flavoured alcoholic drink.
GETTING THERE
You can fly to Istanbul from almost anywhere in the world but from Australia it’s easiest via Dubai with Qantas/Emirates. From Istanbul you can get buses and domestic flights to most of the places mentioned. A hire car is another good option, providing more freedom of movement, and the roads in Turkey are pretty good.
PLAYING THERE
Visit at least one Mosque and one Turkish bath just for the experience. Wherever you go, drink the Turkish tea and coffee and eat the baklava and Turkish delight. They are good all over the country. You can see whirling dervish dances if you enjoy the cultural side of things, but mostly sit back and watch the unfolding chaos that seems to permeate Turkey from the markets to the carpet sellers, they all seem to enjoy the craziness of life.
STAYING THERE
Turkey offers a wide range accommodation from backpacker hostels to top end. In the off season you can get good deals on the better hotels but in peak season be prepared to pay for quality. Wherever possible avoid the backpacker joints unless that’s all you budget extends to. They can be pretty basic.

APP OF THE WEEK
WORLD’S SMARTEST DUMMY The Pacif-i dummy from British company BlueMaestro has a built-in temperature sensor and can transmit the data via Bluetooth to a free app on your smartphone. The app time-stamps and plots the data in a graph. It also has a proximity sensor that allows parents to monitor the dummy’s location and in turn be alerted when bub wanders off. Tech savvy parents will be pleased to know the Pacif-i is now available for pre-order and international shipping begins in May.

HIGHBALL If you think you are a sophisticated drinker, a top shelf sipper, a Bond-like imbiber – then this may be the app for you. Highball allows you to share and collect the best cocktail recipes from around the world. Let’s face it, we’ve all had that perfect cocktail at a party and for the life of us can’t remember what was in it the next day. This app solves that First World problem with the tap of a button. It’s also a social drinker – when you share a recipe, the app generates an image of a ‘recipe card’, which is super easy to share on Twitter or email.
How much function can you put inside a cube barely larger than a standard dice? A fair bit, if WonderCube is anything to go by. This unique invention gives you eight mobile accessories in one, which means you can take plenty of peripherals with you without having to stuff your pockets. It can be used as an emergency charger, a memory card slot, or even a torch.
The WonderCube is expected in Australia in the coming months and is expected to retail for about $70.
This app is available for IOS free.
Those who loved Serial, the groundbreaking podcast about a 1999 Baltimore murder, will love this. After being released this week it went straight to the top of the iTunes top podcasts charts. Unlike Serial, which was framed as a purely journalistic investigation into Adnan Syed’s alleged murder of his high school girlfriend Hae Min Lee, Undisclosed is advocating for him and will chronicle a new appeal in the case. The podcast has been created by the lawyer who originally brought the case to the attention of the makers of Serial. To listen go to Undisclosed: The State Vs. Adnan Syed in the iTunes store.

AUSTRALIA’S DIGITAL LAG
Could Good Food Affect Your Mindset and Mood? What you need to know! Absolutely it can! For some people, eating certain foods that are perceived as good, even based on a Dieticians plan, can reduce their moods causing lack of motivation, negative thoughts, and mental fatigue, not to mention physical fatigue. Trying to stay positive while your brain chemicals are low is like trying to build a city without bricks. Dopamine is the brain chemical that makes you feel excited, exhilarated, energetic, and rewarded, and is the precursor to adrenalin. Without it physical and mental fatigue, low libido, or feeling like you don’t care is the result. Serotonin is the brain chemical that makes you feel happy, and positive, and is the precursor to melatonin for sleep. Without serotonin, negative thoughts, feelings of there being no point to anything, and in more severe cases will cause depression, anxiety, irritability, anger, stress, insomnia and migraines.
T
he Australian economy is not particularly innovative and the government could do more to encourage the use of information and communications technology (ICT), a global report says. Australia has moved up two places to 16th in the latest global rankings of digital competitiveness, just ahead of New Zealand. The World Economic Forum report says while Australia has very high levels of ICT usage and achieved excellent grades in terms of online services offerings and e-participation tools, the government could do more to encourage the use of ICTs. “The economy is largely dependent on commodity exports and is not particularly innovative,” it says.
myweeklypreview.com.au
25.indd 1
The majority of people are not aware that 80% of serotonin is used in your gut, and only 20% for your brain for happiness and positive mindset. “In order to develop this capacity for innovation, diversify the economy, and build resilience, the government and businesses should embrace ICTs even more enthusiastically.” Australian Industry Group chief executive Innes Willox noted Australia ranked ninth in 2004. “Australia should have a firm aim to regain our top 10 standing by 2020 by accelerating the development of our digital capabilities as part of the general overall emphasis we need to place on lifting productivity and AAP competitiveness,” he says.
If you upset your gut, you’ll upset your mood, and that’s why you need to find a diet that is right for you as an individual for your best performance mentally and physically. The wrong foods cause your liver to take up the enzymes that are needed for serotonin, stealing it away from your gut and brain, leaving you feeling low and negative for at least 24 hours after eating the foods, so if you’re eating those same foods every day, you’ll always feel the same, and never know how great you could really feel. Every individual has a different level of tolerance and intolerance to a broad range of foods. No two people are alike, even common food allergens are fine for some and not others. It’s impossible to guess. Checking for these intolerances are like discovering the instruction manual to your body for life. Correcting gut function and getting the right diet for you can be done quickly with the right testing and planning. You could be happier with a more positive mindset in a matter of weeks. MY OPINION
FOOTY FEVER
MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU
With a quarter of the NRL season gone, Nathan “Nugget” Dell runs a very crooked rule over the teams in 2015.
The forthcoming release of Star Wars: Episode VII prompts a trip down memory lane for Sami Muirhead.
T
he Force is back. I refer to the release of the second trailer for the Star Wars VII movie, ahead of the premier at Christmas. It’s stirred quite a fuss in my little corner of the world. My husband watched it over and over so he could hear Luke Skywalker say “The force is strong in my family”. And just when you think it’s over, you see Harrison Ford and Chewbacca pop up. This is epic. The ultimate bromance is still on the boil in The Force Awakens. Chewy and Han Solo are still hanging out in the Millennium Falcon and while time may have been kind to wookies, our friend Harry looks less like Indiana Jones and more like an ambassador for funeral insurance plans. But you get my point: the good guys are still buddies, so this galaxy, and the ones far away, are all safe. Todd the supposedly ‘grown’ man I work with, told me he literally peed his pants a little with excitement when he saw the trailer. An admission I find even more disturbing than watching Princess Leia and Luke kissing. Men everywhere fist pumped the air when they watched the short clip. The new trailer. Not the brother and sister kissing. Stay with me here! And I too was surprised to find myself excited. I grew up half-watching Han Solo, Darth Vader and Yoda. My brother was obsessed and I took more notice than I probably cared to admit. When I watched the trailer it was a primal trigger of memories and emotions. I felt as though I’ll be seeing
some old friends (and enemies) again. This makes me happy. Of course the wheels of the well oiled merchandising machine have started turning and we will soon be ensconced in a galactic empire’s worth of ‘stuff’. Look out Frozen, Olaf will be a melted memory in December with every kid craving a lightsaber. And this thought makes me happy too. I cannot wait to introduce my kids to Chewie and Jabba the Hut. Our kids will now be properly introduced to Star Wars and see how cool it is. Thirty-six years on and Star Wars will be passed to yet another generation. How special to be able to pass on a tradition many of us shared with our parents to our kids. It got me thinking about the impact certain pictures have on us. Some of my strongest and happiest memories revolve around watching movies on a Friday night with my family. We would heat up popcorn and sit under blankets, all the while thinking we were the luckiest kids in the world. Perhaps we need to embrace the simple things again, like the family movie night. Throw in some popcorn, extra butter and a Coke from a one litre glass bottle and its just about perfect. The only negative is you’ll have to explain the messy family tree in Star Wars. For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.

BRISBANE BRONCOS – The boys from Red Hill have been a surprise to all, including themselves. Wayne Bennett is so excited he nearly stopped scowling. MELBOURNE STORM – The last time I was this impressed by a group of men in purple, it was 1992 and it was Prince’s backup dancers on the Diamonds & Pearls tour. ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS – These Dragons are boring, especially compared to the awesome ones from Game of Thrones, plus there’s way less nudity. SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS – The Reigning premiers’ start to the season has been like all of their owner’s movie performances, started off strong but now it’s a just a fat bloke looking confused. NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS – With the oldest pack in the comp, they are starting to struggle. They should come good, unless injury takes a toll or someone screens a Matlock marathon. SYDNEY ROOSTERS – Look great until they are under pressure and then they retreat, just like another group of Red, White and Blue clad sooks… the French. Au revior premiership. PENRITH PANTHERS – Ivan Cleary’s men have stolen a couple of wins which is no surprise – stealing is like a cottage industry in Mount Druitt. WEST TIGERS – Have surprised me, but will struggle down the road if the 11 year-old playing halfback doesn’t get his daily Popper and kindy kip.
NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS – ‘Exciting’, ‘enthralling’, ‘bringing back the fans’…oh wait, that’s the Kiwi Cricket team. The Warriors are still garbage. CANTERBURY BULLDOGS – There’s been biting, kicking, eye gouging and crotch punching, and that’s just the supporters. NORTH QLD COWBOYS – They have turned around their season thanks to courage, determination and dozens of Jonathan Thurston inspired tries. That last one seems fairly important. CRONULLA SHARKS – The fact that their club colours are black and blue is fitting, because they are getting bashed by everyone. PARRAMATTA EELS – Just like one of those microwavable chicken sandwiches you get at a servo when you’re drunk, blisteringly hot on the outside, freezing up the middle. GOLD COAST TITANS – Have got loads of speed, which is not a huge surprise when you consider the early season drug charges. CANBERRA RAIDERS – Ricky Stuart’s men proving yet again that the only time you can wear lime green and hope to score is Saint Patrick’s Day. MANLY SEA EAGLES – These blokes look chubby, sweaty, confused and generally terrified, so basically me on my wedding night.

BETTER OFF RED
Khloe’s beauty bag
What’s in Khloe Kardashian’s beauty bag? It’s a mixed one. The products she can’t live without include Lancôme Definicils Mascara, Kiehl’s Blue Herbal Gel Cleanser and La Mer Crème de La Mer. She’s also a fan of Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch sunscreen and of course Kardashian Beauty products such as the Sheer Joy Tinted Lip Balm.
It’s the classic beauty problem – how to choose a red lipstick. Your skin colour and undertone, your hair and eye colour all affect how a lipstick looks on you. If you have fair skin, a blue-based cherry red will contrast with your pink undertones, making a very bold statement. A tomato or coral red will brighten your complexion, while a cranberry warms up fair skin, for a sophisticated look. Orange reds also suit warmer medium complexions, but for a more striking look, a deep blackberry red is a good choice for medium complexions. Those with darker skin tones can pull of an
orange red, but a cool red is better – look out for a plum or maroon. Even with these basics in mind, it’s hard choosing a red lipstick, and the best thing to do is try it on your lips (not your hand). If the lipstick looks jarring or makes you look washed out, take it off and try again. A colour that pops is great, but it has to enhance your look, rather than overwhelm you. Good luck!

SUPER DEBATE
SHOULD YOU SELF-MANAGE YOUR SUPER? Times s are ch hanging g – morre than eve er peoplle are deman nding greater bility ov ver the eir own n investmentt option ns in su uper. Se elf Man naged flexib er Funds (SM MSFs) now acccount for the e bigges st slice e of the e superr pie in Supe Austra alia – ah head of the e traditio onal ind dustry super funds.
Combined with the tax concessions available in super; the tax free status of all withdrawals once you turn 60 and the asset protection that super provides, it’s clear why superannuation is attracting more and more interest.
Not yet 60? Whether retired or not, why wait until age 60? A 55 year old can live TAX FREE from their superannuation and create a tax free estate plan. Want to purchase an investment property? It’s easy to understand the interest in SMSFs when you consider that you could use your existing super funds as a deposit on an investment property; take out a mortgage; and purchase your next
investment property in superannuation – with the rent and your 9.25% super guarantee contributions funding the loan!
How big is YOUR TAX refund? One of the features of a SMSF is taking advantage of the tax system in Australia. With good planning in your own super fund you could be paying NO tax and still receive a tax refund from the ATO in retirement.
So why NOT self manage? A lot of benefits of superannuation can be obtained WITHOUT having to manage your own fund. ES&A offer a unique position on this argument as one of our Senior Advisers DOES have a SMSF and the other does NOT. As Financial Advisers we get paid for our investment and financial advice
only (regardless of which super fund you choose) and have actively recommended clients invest in ALL forms of super – from opening industry super fund accounts to helping clients open their own self managed super funds.

The Great Debate On Wednesday, 6th May at 6pm, ES&A will be holding a seminar that will debate the pros and the cons on starting and operating your own self managed super fund. We have invited an independent SMSF Accountant to help answer questions and debate the merits of operating a self managed super fund. We will also discuss some of the investment ‘basics’ that we believe all investors should know and how to manipulate these rules to suit you – regardless if your super fund is self managed or not.

HOW TO SHOP SMART
CRAZY FOR COCONUT Have you got a jar of coconut oil in your pantry and a bottle of coconut water in the fridge? If not, you might be wondering why many are touting the virtues of this supposed superfood. Grown in the tropics and subtropics, coconuts are part of the daily diets of many people. Coconut water comes from young coconuts and contains lots of vitamins and minerals. A 2012 Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition study showed coconut water was just as hydrating as commercial sports drinks. Extracted from mature coconuts, coconut oil is touted as beneficial for weight loss, helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels and boosts immunity. Proponents of coconut oil also say it can curb the appetite, and reduce sugar cravings. It’s great for cooking as it remains stable at high temperatures. Look out for unrefined or virgin coconut oil – some processing methods undermine the nutritional benefits of the oil. And it’s not just good for inside the body. Because of its antioxidant and nourishing properties, coconut oil is a

great beauty product. Use it as a moisturiser or on dry, chapped lips. It’s also a good make-up remover – try using it on your eyes if you have sensitive skin that is irritated by other makeup remover products. It can condition and protect hair, prevent dandruff and nourish dry hair. You can also use coconut oil for oral health. Oil pulling is an old remedy that cleans gums, removes bacteria and whitens teeth. Oil is swished around the mouth for 10 to 15 minutes a day – in the morning before you’ve eaten is a good time to do it.
hopping for food can be a challenge, with lots of conflicting information about nutrition. By shopping smart and changing a few small habits, you can navigate the aisles stress-free and ensure you’re doing the very best for your health. 1. Ignore nutrition information bars on packaging: Nutrition facts on the side of food packaging are confusing and misleading. Just because something is low in calories does not mean it’s not laced with additives, preservatives and chemical ingredients, which leads me to my next point. 2. Always check the ingredients: With clever marketing and packaging, everything can look healthy. You will never know what is in a product without reading the ingredients, so take the time to do this. If it sounds like it was created in a lab, it probably was.
3. Try to buy organic: I understand that not everyone can buy organic everything, however, some products retain pesticides more than others so I recommend buying these organic if you can: apples, celery, strawberries, grapes, spinach and lettuce, to name a few. 4. Buy fresh, buy local: Source fresh food locally – it’s delicious, better for you and supports the local community. Try finding a farmer’s market nearby and get to know your local butcher and greengrocer – it’s so worth the effort. You’ll feel better, save money and will never want to venture back to the chain supermarkets.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE
EFFECTS OF FALLING AUSSIE DOLLAR Troy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
A
s many Australian companies have welcomed a fall in the local currency against the US dollar, most other currencies around the world have seen a similar adjustment. The broad strength in the US dollar most likely portends the first rate rise by the US Federal Reserve after a long spell maintaining a near-zero interest rate. Our base-case view is that the Federal Reserve will move later this year but perversely, the speed of the currency appreciation might end up staying the Federal Reserve’s hand. Many large US corporations complained of the ill-effects of an elevated currency in their December quarter results; a malaise that Australian companies struggled through in the
period of US-dollar parity. The US Citigroup Economic Surprise Index fell to its deepest level in three years, in contrast to the sharp fall in the unemployment rate. What might be good for our currency might not necessarily be positive for stock markets, at least immediately after the Federal Reserve moves. Typically, a few months before the first rate rise, equities flatten out and then experience a mild correction once the rate rise occurs. After three to four months, stocks reach a low point and then go on to reach a new all-time high within six to 12 months. This implies that any correction should be seen as tactical and not a fundamental change of direction. The ‘taper tantrum’ episode from 2013 is also a helpful reference point. In May 2013, the Federal Reserve first spoke of the prospect of tapering its quantitative easing program. Markets took fright at the possibility of the withdrawal of stimulus from central banks and the possibility that longer term
bond yields would shift higher, thereby negating the drive for higher-yielding investments such as equities. This fear was unfounded as other central banks stepped up their own efforts to loosen monetary policy to combat weak inflationary expectations. Indeed, despite the US halting its quantitative easing program, monetary policy around the globe is more stimulatory than it has ever been. Nonetheless, the Australian market had a sharp reaction to the possibility of tapering. In that episode the Australian market fell by 10 per cent in a month. High-yielding sectors were hard hit, including banks, consumer staples, property trusts, telecoms and utilities. Commodity prices also weakened so that materials stocks also suffered. The sector to see the lightest touch was health care. By the end of the year though, the local market had recovered, with a gain of four per cent, and importantly, a 15 per cent gain from the June nadir. The materials, consumer discretionary, banks and telecoms
staged the strongest recoveries. The only sector trading below the starting point of the taper reaction was the property trust sector. Again, this episode illustrates the potentially tactical nature of a disruption from a US rate rise rather than a breakdown of fundamentals. verybody loves a good bar room joke. I myself walked into a bar last week and the cool young dude behind the taps asked me what I’d like, I said, ‘Surprise me!’ So he showed me a naked picture of my wife. In honour of Tony Abbott’s magician like ability to make a schooner disappear in seven seconds, here’s a few of the best bar room yarns for you to dine out on. There’s an Aussie taxidermist who strolls into a bar in NZ and he orders a beer and the Barman says, ‘Hey bro you not from round ‘ere eh? Whot do ya do fra luving?’ And the Aussie says, ‘I’m a taxidermist, I mount dead STONE & WOOD LAGER 330ML Available from Cellarbrations Brightwater Marketplace, Parklands Marketplace, Wises Road, Buderim and Bellvista Tavern, Bellvista
animals’. And the barman looks around and announces ‘Hoy, ut’s all sweet boys, thus Aussie’s one of us!’ Naturally, there’s the vintage yarn about the fella who stumbles into his local and the barman notices he has a steering wheel sticking out the front of his pants. He says, ‘Hey what’s the go with the steering wheel?’ and the guy replies, ‘Oh don’t get me started, it’s driving me nuts!’ Then there’s the lad who strolls into the bar with a lump of bitumen under his arm and says, ‘I’ll have a pot of draught thanks pal, and one for the road’. But friends, my absolute all-time favourite bar room joke is this. A drunk and a giraffe stroll into a bar and they order a few beers and after a while the giraffe gets up to use the gents, but he stumbles and falls and passes out near the ciggie machine. The drunk finishes his beer, looks at the giraffe, looks at the barman and gets up to leave. Just then the barman fires up and pointing to the giraffe says, ‘Hey mate you can’t leave that lyin’ there!’ To which the drunk

Of course, we need a brew to toast your brilliance with and this one might be the duck’s guts. From the makers of The Jasper Ale and the Pacific Ale comes the Stone & Wood Lager. This green bottled gem is based on a Bavarian style pale lager and simply nails both my thirst and flavour expectations. The mob at S&W only use the best quality natural ingredients, creating a delicate pale lager that is refreshingly satisfying to the last soft, clean finish drop. This third beer makes a perfect trifecta and I give it a solid 4.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

ESSENCE OF BUDERIM The Buderim Foundation has raised more than $1.2 million in the past ten years for the benefit of its local community – and it has now found a way to bottle that success. Called the Essence of Buderim, the community is being offered the opportunity to purchase six bottles of Buderim Foundation wine and a 170-page recipe and lifestyle book based on the village’s pursuit of fine dining for $150. The book has been created by Buderim resident and fine food creator Jenny Cant, while the 2011 vintage Stonewell District shiraz was selected by the foundation’s wine buffs. FALCON XR8 SET TO GO OUT WITH A BANG
D
riving Ford’s Falcon XR8 is a bit like visiting the automotive version of Jurassic Park. Like the dinosaurs in the famous films, this car has already been declared extinct thanks to Ford’s decision to cease manufacturing in Australia late next year. Yet, just like those movie dinosaurs, the XR8 is still here, still making plenty of noise and still kind of wonderful. The Falcon’s death warrant was effectively signed in 2013 when the American-based parent company decided to end its long tradition of building cars in Australia. That means the
Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the FORD FALCON XR8 current Falcon, a recently spruced-up model called the FG X will be the last in a long and proud tradition. So our test drive in what will probably be the last ever Falcon XR8 was somewhat tinged with melancholy but an enjoyable experience nonetheless. It’s fair to say the model is going out with a bang, with the most powerful and dynamically competent model ever to wear the badge. Its stonking V8 engine making a farewell cameo after five years out of the market – adds to the dinosaurlike appeal of this car. The big bulging bonnet. The wonderful rumble that accompanies every prod of the throttle.
Having put much of its faith in turbo-charged six-cylinder engines in recent models, it’s a fittingly nostalgic touch that this last Falcon should celebrate the great Aussie V8 (OK, American V8).This is the first XR8 since 2010. Like a scene in the original Mad Max movie, this is truly the last of the V8 interceptors. The engine, codenamed Coyote by its American designers, uses a mechanical supercharger to force-feed the five-litre V8, resulting in a dazzling 335 kilowatts and 570 Newton metres of glorious thrust. But despite the new engine and
some new technology inside, there’s a familiarity about the FG X Falcon’s appearance. Outside there’s a bigger, bolder grille treatment, but most of the other panels remain untouched. Inside, switch-gear, the instrument panel and dash fascia is virtually identical to the previous Falcon. Unlike Holden with its VF Commodore which boasts the best interior we’ve ever seen in an Aussie-built car, Ford apparently didn’t waste too much creative effort on a car soon to be phased out. Still there are a few new bells and Continued page 38>

quickly from that point. The downside, of course, is that you can watch the fuel gauge moving almost as quickly as the scenery around you. Our test drive in the XR8 included an extended long weekend trip on the open road – the kind of journey this car was built for and it obliged with remarkably quiet, easygoing cruise. Despite covering about 800 kilometres, much of that at loping speed with the engine barely ticking over, the trip computer calculated our average consumption at a hefty 11.8 litres per 100 kilometres. Around town you could expect to almost double that with an official combined figure of 13.7 litres per
100 kilometres. Ride can be a little harsh over rough surfaces, thanks to the big, handsome alloy wheels and slick low-profile tyres. But otherwise its handling is sturdy and predictable enough. It certainly looks the part with aggressive body kit, a big rear spoiler and enough menace to command plenty of second glances. Around town it’s thirsty and a bit heavy. But put it on the highway and this big Aussie sedan is a hard thing to beat. Will the last XR8 become a collector’s item like that legendary GT-HO from almost 50 years ago? Or will it go the way of the dinosaurs? Lets hope for a Hollywood ending.
FORD FALCON XR8 HOW BIG? A full-sized Aussie sedan, sadly the last such machine to wear the famous Ford blue oval badge. It’s roomy and practical, despite its sporty intent. HOW FAST? Seriously. With its supercharged V8 pushing out 335 kilowatts, this car will match all but the most exotic European performance cars for acceleration. Its handling and braking is less impressive. HOW THIRSTY? Ridiculously. It has an appetite that would put a T-Rex to shame.

<from page 36 whistles. The touch-screen Sync2 system that sits in the centre of the dash is attractive, intuitive and easy to use. The second-generation of this system has been upgraded to include satellite navigation for all Falcon models as well as emergency assistance, full digital radio and its own Wi-Fi hotspot. The system features voice recognition to allow access to all manner of cabin control commands from tuning the audio, inputting navigation details or changing the temperature simply by speaking to the car. It will even heed commands like “find a car park” – scanning its navigation system for the nearest parking station. The Sync2 talks back to you with a pleasant female voice. This is the ultimate, hairy-chested macho machine, a personality trait that has sat with the V8 Falcon all the way back to the iconic GT-HO in the 1960s. If that car was the original scary dinosaur, this latest version is eminently more refined and civilised, if no less powerful. Its acceleration is brutal. Plant the accelerator and, with a whirr of the supercharger and a giant gulp of fuel and air, all hell breaks loose as the Falcon’s big rear tyres scramble to grip the road. Everything happens very
HOW MUCH? That’s one of the best things about this car. Massive power, plenty of equipment for a reasonable price tag of $54,690 (plus onroads) for the six-speed sports auto. The manual is $2,000 cheaper.

CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS
My Property Preview looks at the latest figures on new home lending, housing starts and housing approvals.
LENDING FOR NEW HOMES IMPROVES Reporting on Australian Bureau of Statistics housing finance figures released last week, the Housing Industry Association says the number of loans to owner-occupiers (excluding refinancing) declined modestly in February 2015, although the number of loans to those purchasing and building new homes increased slightly. “The number of loans to households building or purchasing new homes increased by two per cent in February 2015,” says HIA economist Geordan Murray. “This is a relatively positive result against a backdrop where lending to households purchasing existing homes eased back modestly. The number of loans to owner-occupiers
TOTAL HOUSE APPROVALS
buying established homes, excluding refinancing, fell by 0.9 per cent in February to a level 4.9 per cent weaker compared with the same time a year ago.” Investors, however, are favouring established over new homes. Murray says, “Lending figures indicate that the investor market eased by around 3.4 per cent during February, but remained around 9.9 per cent higher than the same period a year ago. The majority of the growth in investor lending has been to those purchasing existing homes. In February over 90 per cent of lending to investors went into the existing home market. “Lending activity in the first-home buyer market remained quite weak. The number of loans to first home buyers in
the three months to February 2015 was around 8.2 per cent lower than the corresponding period a year earlier.”
NEW HOME STARTS SLOWS DOWN The number of new home starts also eased back in the final quarter of last year, after reaching a record high in the September quarter of 2014. The ABS figures show that detached dwelling commencements held relatively steady, easing by 0.9 per cent in the December 2014 quarter, while ‘other dwelling’ commencements (predominantly multi-unit dwellings) fell by 21.4 per cent. In aggregate, the total number of dwellings commenced declined by 10.6 per cent to 48,125 in the
quarter. There were 17.5 per cent more detached dwelling commencements in 2014 than there were a year earlier, and ‘other dwelling’ commencements increased by 18.4 per cent. “The 2014 calendar year was the nation’s strongest on record with almost 198,000 new dwellings commencing construction, 18 per cent more than in the previous year,” Murray says. “However, the composition of new home building activity has been quite different to previous cycles owing to the large number of multi-unit dwellings commenced in the major capital cities.” While the start of 2015 has proved to be quieter for new starts, the HIA says it’s not bad news. “The elevated level of new home building in 2014 has, no doubt, made a small dent in Australia’s housing shortage and broadening the mix of housing types available will be beneficial,” he says. “Policy makers must nevertheless ensure that the mix of housing types continues to align with the preferences and expectations of the community, within which detached housing is still the major element.”
TICK OF APPROVAL
The latest housing approval figures released this week by the Housing Industry Association reveal a mixed bag for housing across the state. Total approvals for Queensland were 39,907 for the 12 months to February 2015, an improvement of 11 per cent on the 12 months to February 2014. Figures for the Sunshine Coast show a 22 per cent change, from 2579 to 3138 approvals for those periods.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Righto then, how good was Margaret River last Saturday? Certainly worth watching the highlight reel at WSL. Watch Slater’s 19.5 heat to blow your mind. Indonesia has been scoring the same swell so hang on to your hats for the footage to come through. Back to reality here, last Sunday was my pick and it delivered. Unfortunately, I had some dodgy Thai food and could not stray more than 5 metres from the bathroom. Hopefully I can make it up this weekend as it is looking good! SW wind predicted with some small waves. Why not do some exploring and head north – load a quiver of Mals, stand ups and your short board and mix it up as it looks fun.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] The sun and Mars are both moving through earthy Taurus, which helps stabilise your restless ram energy. So it’s the ideal week to take ambitious ideas and turn them into practical reality. There is much enjoyment to be found within your local neighbourhood.
TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] The stars encourage you to venture beyond the safe and sensible, as you dream dreams that are truly inspirational. With the sun and Mars both in your sign, you’ve got a double dose of Taurean tenacity … and you’re also in stubborn, slow-moving mode.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Gregarious Geminis love nothing better than a good old chin-wag, and you’re certainly in the mood for garrulous gossip and indiscreet chatter, as Mercury shifts into your sign. The weekend Mercury/Saturn opposition will help you think before you act and speak.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Are your dreams big enough? With so many planets activating your aspirations zones, make your plans for the future big, beautiful and creative. There will be opportunities to share your hopes and dreams with like-minded souls this week.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] It’s the perfect week to set gigantic goals and dream big dreams for the future – and don’t make them too practical and pedestrian! It’s time for cautious cats and languid lions to go for gold as the sun (your ruler) aspects Neptune, giving you a shot of creative juice.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Virgos love to learn! Mercury moves into your career zone, so it’s a terrific time pick up a new professional skill. It’s also a wonderful week to share a creative project with someone special. A family member is looking to you for smart ideas and sensible advice.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Librans are creative creatures, but sometimes you are too easily side-tracked on the road to success. This week’s stars encourage you to be more practical, as you turn your abstract dreams into reality. Put more energy into your love of travel and education.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] When it comes to money matters, be cautious. Buy practical things you need, rather than expensive trifles that you’ll regret. But, when it comes to education, community work or professional opportunities, keep exploring with a curious mind and an open heart.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] You’ve got a lot on your plate, but don’t expect too much support from others this week, at home and work. You’ll have to be your own cheer squad, as you tackle tasks in solo Sagittarian style. Attached archers – it’s time to talk about serious, long-term issues.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Capricorns are capable organisers, supreme strategists and marvellous managers. But this week, aim to be more careful in the way you communicate – otherwise a colleague or family member may misunderstand your motives and refuse to comply.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Exciting personal projects are calling, but a challenging situation with a friend or family member will take up much of your time and energy this week. Avoid taking short-cuts, Aquarius. If you are rash and slap-dash, there could be consequences later on.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] You’re keen to gossip and catch up with the current affairs of family and friends, but don’t be too frivolous and salacious, as loved ones have important issues to discuss. Allow plenty of time to get to meetings and appointments. Get yourself involved in some charity work.

THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS A moment of grace can make everyone’s day take a turn for the better, writes Richard O’Leary
R
andom acts of kindness can happen in the most peculiar places. I was heading home from work last Friday when my shoulder muscles started to tighten in anticipation of the temporary car park that is the intersection of the Bruce Highway and Sunshine Motorway at Tanawha any time after 2pm on a weekday. But then the most peculiar thing happened. The long line of cars trying to cross on to Wilson Road was still there – but there was a big difference, it was moving. Those driving north, seeing the predicament of their fellow travellers, were slowing and letting one or two cars through at a time. And it wasn’t just one person, most of the drivers were doing their good deed for the week. It may have taken until Friday, but they were doing it. It may have been a relatively small gift in a
big universe, but it changed my whole perspective as I headed into the weekend. They actually get it, I thought. Instead of just worrying about themselves, they were thinking of others. The guy in the yellow VW helping the lady in the black Barina to get to the date she’d been thinking about all week,
“It was an epiphany en masse” the mum in the red people-mover making sure the bloke in the white ute wasn’t late for dinner, and the young woman in the green station wagon giving the dad in the family sedan an extra 20 minutes with his kids. It was an epiphany en masse. But was one Friday at one intersection enough? My mind raced to the
possibility of turning every day into an opportunity for random acts of kindness. Imagine if everyone did at least one selfless thing every 24 hours? What a wonderful world. I could start a whole movement. I was deflated somewhat to discover through a quick Google search that someone else had already thought of this… and quite some time ago. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation was founded upon the powerful belief in kindness, and inspiring a culture of kindness in schools, homes and communities. Its website, which you can find at randomactsofkindness.org, even includes ideas on how to be kind: offer the handyman a drink, thank your bus driver, and smile at five strangers. Why not try them yourself? You don’t even have to wait until you see a long line of traffic. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au
