still remember as a child seeing a program on 60 Minutes about ‘test-tube’ babies and the miracle of life this groundbreaking technology was giving to a handful of Australian families. Fast forward more than three decades and IVF has helped to create millions of families around the world, including my own courtesy of my eldest son. We were very lucky as we succeeded on the first attempt, but for others the path can be much more difficult. In this week’s Mother’s Day edition we take a look at some very special mums who have had to try harder than most to begin a family. We also talk with a Sunshine Coast woman who is dedicating her life to rescuing child slaves, we take a long weekend getaway to Kingscliff, and we give you the seven secrets to a healthier you (p27). All this and a property section which may well include your next home. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Newsreader and producer for Sea FM and Mix FM Nicola Ryan graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast 10 years ago. She has now returned to the university to tutor the next generation of local journalists. FIRST JOB?
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
I was 14 and was so excited to get my first job at Beefy’s at Aussie World. They have the best pies.
My wedding day. How can you beat the perfect day surrounded by family and close friends overlooking the Glass House Mountains?
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . .
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
My husband Mark, and I have 17 family members living on the Sunshine Coast. I’m lucky to have everyone so close.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? My whole life – how lucky am I? I had a brief stint living in Sydney and I really missed home and my family. We really do live in the best paradise. I also really missed that feeling of making a difference in my work. It was easy in Sydney to just produce and present the news without really having any connection with it. Here on the Sunshine Coast, it’s different. You care about the issues impacting the region. You have a role where you can help people and influence change. I also missed driving my car to work without having to pay a toll and huge parking fees.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Mary Cairncross Park at Maleny, Ewen Maddock Dam at Mooloolah and Australia Zoo.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? Everywhere. I love the idea of being a tourist in your own backyard. I take visitors to as many places as possible, the beaches, the hinterland, Noosa, Australia Zoo – even fishing off Caloundra.
10 My Weekly Preview | May 8, 2015
10.indd 1
The first time I read a news bulletin on air. I was shaking like a leaf. I would never have guessed I would still be doing it almost nine years later.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I’m curled up on the couch with a cup of tea, cake and a good English drama on the TV. Or when hunting for treasure at an antiques and collectables fair.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? When people say ‘somethink’ instead of ‘something’ and pronounce H ‘haych’.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? I fear our infrastructure isn’t keeping up with our growing population. The Bruce Highway between Palmview and Brisbane is a joke. The duplication of the rail line is also well overdue.
WHAT ARE YOU READING? Mark Darin from 92.7 Mix FM’s Mark and Caroline recently gave me a copy of Jacks and Jokers. I’m still getting through it. He actually gave it to me to read after a discussion we had about a story that’s currently in the news. The
daughter of a notorious brothel madam is seeking a coronial inquest into her mother’s death. Her mother was staying in a safe house in Brisbane when she died 40 years ago. She was set to be the star witness in a perjury trial against a leading detective. Jacks and Jokers talks about this particular case.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Save your money. Working in the media industry, I think the best advice I’ve been given is be kind and don’t badmouth your opposition – you never know who might be your boss one day!
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? Remember you are good enough. Never pass up an opportunity to learn something new.
TEA OR COFFEE? BOTH – strong, white, no sugar. I’ll choose a cappuccino over a flat white, just for the chocolate top.
NRL OR AFL? I enjoy State of Origin, but that is as far as it goes. I find it hard to look at NRL players and not think of their long list of indiscretions (I’m talking off the field!).

LITTLE MIRACLES
Australia is now a world leader in IVF technology, which is responsible for one in every 26 births in our nation. WORDS: Tamara Simoneau
B
eing a mum is hard work. I used to run a glitzy prime-time television show with relentless daily deadlines, long hours, constant budget pressures, and a staff of more than 60 people scattered in different time-zones all over the world. Being a mum is a much tougher gig. The pay is brutal, you never clock off, and there’s no union to help you out when you’re negotiating the scissors away from your toddler, or facing another long night with a sick baby. But in spite of all this and so much more, it’s also the best job in the world, as any mum will attest. Becoming a mum for me, like so many others, was no picnic either. When you set out on your path to parenthood, no one tells you to watch out for the crooks in the road, or the heartbreaking detours that can happen along the way. Potential parents find these things out as they go along. Our journey was not a smooth one. We’ve lost more babies through miscarriage than we care to sit and count. We’ve endured a gruelling roster of fertility tests and treatments and encountered more heartache than we thought we could handle. And instead of
12 My Weekly Preview | May 8, 2015

the joy that we know pregnancy can bring, each time those double pink lines showed up, we felt the shadow of fear lurking and feebly prepared ourselves to have our dreams snatched away once more. It haunted me through every scan, taunted me with every passing week. Finally, we did make it to the finish line and held that pink little life that would forever change us in our arms. And now, incredibly, we have three children. We are some of the lucky ones, regardless of what we’ve been through. We all know people who would make wonderful parents if only they hadn’t been dealt one of life’s cruellest cards. One in six couples faces infertility, and it’s an issue shared equally between men and women. Women leaving it later to start their families has been the most talked about reason for years now. Dr George Bogiatzis, a fertility specialist at Fertility Solutions on the Sunshine Coast, says the average age of women treated at his clinic is 36. “If you are female and under the age of 35 it is reasonable to try for a pregnancy for 12 months and then seek assistance if you have not been able to
conceive. If you are over the age of 35 seeking assistance after six months of trying is also appropriate,” he says. In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a saviour to some, and more and more children are being conceived this way. “It is certainly much more talked about and accepted today compared to five to ten years ago. People appear to be more comfortable talking openly about such a private matter, which helps raise the profile of IVF and demystifies it,” says Bogiatzis. The most recent data for Australia is
from 2012 – 65 000 IVF treatment cycles were performed that year, six percent more than the year before. Across the world, there are now more than five million people who wouldn’t exist without this technology. That’s a staggering number when you consider that the very first IVF or ‘test-tube baby’, as she was referred to then, was born in 1978. In Australia, Candice Reed was the first IVF baby, born in 1980. Now, Australia is considered a world leader in IVF technology.

“It’s all so fleeting. Now we know we are not having any more, you really have to see through the sleep deprivation and frustration and appreciate it at the same time”

“With the advent of new procedures such as extended embryo culture, vitrification (freezing) and PICSI (a technique used to select sperm for IVF) the industry is seeing success results continue to increase, which is very exciting. Not only is this increase related to advances in the IVF lab, it’s also due to a better understanding about how the body works and what influences female hormones have at various aspects of fertility treatment,“ says Bogiatzis. But it isn’t a perfect science. If an infertile couple can raise the thousands of dollars needed for a treatment, they face success rates that hover slightly above 30 per cent. “Not everyone will achieve a baby just because they have had fertility treatment. I guess the best that we can hope for is that all our patients feel that they have been supported through their journey and even if they do not come out with a baby, that they feel that they were given every opportunity. Sometimes being child-free is OK and people just need to hear that message,” says Bogiatzis. For gay couples, IVF is one of the few options for having a family. Former surfing world champion runner-up Serena Brooke and her partner Emma Sheldrake are mums to two year-old twin girls Scarlett and Lovella. “I always thought that I would have kids. I never thought that being with a woman would limit that potential,” says Brooke. “I had friends that were doing it on tour and off tour. It’s pretty common and was very real to me.” For them, the challenges came in deciding on a sperm donor and who would provide the eggs and carry the embryos. “We were like, ‘Oh, where do we start?’ They send you a list of potential donors with their medical histories and photos. We were really lucky, we found someone right away who clicked for both of us. There was so much
Serena Brooke and Emma Sheldrake with their twin daughters information on the donor that we know more about his medical history and relatives than we do about our own,” she says. Their donor is from the United States. He is what’s known as an open donor, which means he is open to meeting the girls after they turn 18, but will have no role in their lives prior to that. Once that major decision was made, Brooke and Sheldrake had to decide which of them would undergo the IVF treatment. “We decided after getting both our egg counts done,” says Brooke. “Mine was lower and so I decided to go first and try for one, then Em was going to go and try for the second one. As it turned out we got two on the first try.” With two healthy girls, they knew their family was complete. That meant Sheldrake would not experience pregnancy and birth. “The biology doesn’t even matter,” says Brooke. “We have two healthy kids. For sure she had to process that, not doing that part of it herself, but we are super happy with what we’ve been dealt.” Now the focus is very much on the future for the Noosa family, and being
the best mums they can be to their twins. “It’s all so fleeting. Now we know we are not having any more, you really have to see through the sleep deprivation and frustration and appreciate it at the same time. And keep remembering they’ll only be little once,” Brooke says. “Your priorities change. For me I had to become a lot less selfish. You become focused on the little humans you’ve got. It’s challenging but rewarding. All these stages you go through with them, you’re never going to get again.” It’s true, we’ve all been told about how time flies, and how the days might seem long but the years are short when it comes to kids. For Serena, who has stood on the place-getters’ podium at the pinnacle of world surfing, there is no question which achievements she considers her greatest. “It’s totally incomparable. It’s [motherhood] on such a different level. All that stuff is materialistic and selfish really. Becoming a mum is allencompassing. You can’t replicate the love that you feel and the fulfillment you get from it. It’s amazing how in awe of them we are. “It’s a way bigger buzz than any of those things,” she says.

SURF CLUB MILESTONE
A
little under a century ago Queensland’s second Royal Life Saving Society was formed in Maroochydore with barely a dozen members. It followed growing concern about the number of drowning deaths in the area, and the unsuccessful attempt to establish a club at Noosa. On January 1, 1916 the who’s who of the region attended the official launch of the club, cheered on by 2000 people who were camping in the area for Christmas. The club also received its first surf reel and within 24 hours it had already
been used to save five lives. The Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club, as it is now known, is getting ready to celebrate its 100th birthday on New Year’s Day next year. The club recently brought together the stalwarts of the club to mark the beginning of what will be a pivotal year in its rich history. The Foundation and Pioneer Families Lunch was the start of rolling events, which will include an international surf rescue challenge and the launch of a book on the club’s history.
he Sunshine Coast has always been a popular holiday destination, but the council wants to build on the region’s growing reputation as a good place to invest. It’s launched an Invest Sunshine Coast prospectus and new marketing materials, and Mayor Mark Jamieson says they will be used to attract more business to the Sunshine Coast. “Our message is very clear – the future is here on the Sunshine Coast.” “With the launch of this prospectus, we are reinforcing our welcome to new investors, as well as those already investing in the region”. “The Sunshine Coast has excellent credentials, has experienced higher than the national average in terms of annual economic growth since 2001 and has a clear strategy over the next 20 years to shape the development of our economy.” “And the icing on the cake is that we can point to over $2.5 billion in investment already committed to major infrastructure projects and more than $8 billion in private investment either committed or in the pipeline”. “The Sunshine Coast Airport’s $347 million expansion will deliver Australia’s
next international airport and the $81 million expansion of the University of the Sunshine Coast is nearing completion. “I am receiving from both the public and the private sectors in Brisbane and the southern capitals that the Sunshine Coast is getting on the radar as a location for investment.” The council will continue to build on its international relationships, with the mayor to lead a mission to Hong Kong, Frankfurt and London later this month. The Sunshine Coast economy has a gross regional product of $13 billion – twice what it was a decade ago. The economy is predicted to grow to $33 billion by 2033.

RUSSIAN SAILOR RETURNS
I
t has been almost one year since Russian adventurer Fedor Konyukhov sailed into Mooloolaba after a gruelling 160-day solo row across the Pacific. Hundreds of onlookers cheered as he completed his 16,000-kilometre journey from Chile which captured the world’s attention and heart. It was the first time the Russian Orthodox priest had seen land since embarking on his adventure in the nine-metre rowing boat. “When I saw the buildings of Mooloolaba, I realised ‘thank God my solo journey across the Pacific is over,’’ he tells My Weekly Preview. “It was a moment of great joy but with a bit of sadness. “In May 2014 I was 63 years-old and I knew that I would never come back to this ocean again on a rowing boat. Life is too short.’’ Little did Konyukhov know he would be back a short 12 months later to visit the beach where he made history. On Wednesday, May 13, he will be the guest of honour at a ceremony to unveil a Sunshine Coast Council funded plaque. The plaque will be erected at
Mooloolaba and will read: “Fedor Konyukhov arrived here at the Sunshine Coast after completing the longest solo man powered voyage”. It will be the culmination of an amazing journey to a destination which came about in an unusual way. “My ocean rowing boat was built in England by Charlie Pitcher and Mike Wood,’’ Konyukhov says. “Mike has a brother, Chris Wood, who lives on the Sunshine Coast. “Before I left Chile I was studying the charts of the east coast of Australia looking for a safe place to land. Mike said, ‘Aim for Mooloolaba, it is a very nice place and my brother Chris lives there. He will help you’. “I never regret this choice.’’ Konyukhov says he is looking forward to catching up with Woods and seeing fellow Australian supporters. He has fond memories of his Mooloolaba celebration. “In Australia, people support that kind of adventure.” “(On the) Last day I was rowing for almost 24 hours and could not have proper rest being so close to the shore with heavy ship traffic (and a) strong current.
Russia’s Fedor Konyukhov is returning to the Sunshine Coast to receive a plaque in honour of his rowing expedition
“To see fellow rowers early morning was a great boost of emotions.’’ Konyukhov is no stranger to a challenge and has tackled numerous land, sea and polar expeditions throughout his lifetime. He first visited Australia in 1990 to sail around the world from Sydney. He has also climbed Mt Everest, completed four circumnavigations, crossed the Atlantic 14 times and led expeditions to the North and South Poles. He has no plans to slow down, with two projects planned for the next several years, including a round the world Rozier
balloon flight scheduled for August 2016. “So far only one person managed to fly solo non-stop round the world,’’ Konyukhov says. “It was American pilot Steve Fossett. He did it in 2002 in 13 days. I would like to perform a similar flight starting from Western Australia as Steve did.’’ The second project is a Pacific Ocean Marina trench dive in conjunction with Sydney’s Ron Allum, who has played a key role in some of the most daring explorations on the planet. “So I hope I will visit Australia in the future quite often,’’ Konyukhov says.

TRAVEL
SOUTH OF THE BORDER
Kingscliff offers a friendly getaway close to home. WORDS: Candice Holznagel
“I
t’s a happy day. Why wouldn’t it be? Look where we live!” With these words the fresh-faced man behind the cafe counter smiles and hands over a pot of steaming green tea. His candour has left me smiling and as I glance around the beachside, Moroccan influenced cafe, I can’t help but notice the relaxed smiles on the faces of the other diners as they enjoy their breakfast and morning coffee. While the aroma of freshly ground coffee beans and salt air could brighten
anyone’s day, I can’t help but feel their contentment is the result of something more. People just seem, well… relaxed. Welcome to Kingscliff – where everyone is friendly, courteous and happy. Well, they were during our three-day getaway. From resort staff, to the teenager dishing up our nightly gelati and the waiter at our favourite Thai restaurant – not once did we experience anything but kindness. The residents of Kingscliff seem to be acutely aware of how lucky they are to live in such a beautiful part of the world.
It’s a place where people casually stroll the streets in their boardshorts and Havaianas after their daily surf. A small town where people greet each other and stop for a chat. And this is why time and time again, my husband and I continue to visit. Located a short two-and-a-half drive from the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, Kingscliff is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway. With three spare days up our sleeve, we packed up the car and headed south for a little R&R. The beachside town is located on the New Tweed Coast just north of Byron Bay and 15 minutes from the Gold Coast. It boasts world-class surf beaches which stretch from Cabarita to Fingal and is also at the base of the Tweed Valley. Kingscliff hasn’t completely escaped the development boom but it has been handled tastefully, retaining the town’s beachside charm. You’ll find a bustling bowls club, family-friendly caravan park overflowing during the school holidays, and a traditional surf club serving up fish and chips intermingled with the few high-rise developments. A short five-minute drive south of the town centre and you will discover the

Our one-bedroom was spacious and modern, featuring a terrific kitchen and sunny balcony overlooking the lagoon. If you can pry yourself away from the poolside lounge, there is plenty to see and do in and around Kingscliff. Take a walk to Fingal Head Lighthouse or head into town for the weekend market. Children will enjoy a visit to Tropical Fruit World with its plantation safari, fauna park, miniature train and wildlife boat cruise. Make sure you try one of their famous ice-cream parfaits. Enjoy a coffee along Marine Parade or try your hand at kayaking in Cudgen Creek. At the end of the day, there’s no going past the famous Kingscliff Beach, with it’s golden sand and crystal clear waves.
Cardiovascular fitness is a great way to reduce your risk of heart disease, however, if you’re suffering from symptoms of low blood pressure such as dizziness, rapid heart rate, fatigue, or chest pain, there may be a systemic health problem, leading to complication with your heart health. These types of heart complaints can affect you at any age and any fitness level, and can be life threatening. Conditions related to inflammation of the heart tissues such as Pericarditis, are most commonly caused by infections, be it bacterial, fungal or viral, and can be just as life threatening as heart disease brought on by a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and lifestyle habits such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Pericarditis can present with other symptoms such as dry cough, fever, fatigue and anxiety, and in acute stages, be very similar to symptoms of myocardial infarction (heart attack) pain. It can be misdiagnosed, and if not identified, can progress with complications to heart failure.
GETTING THERE
Kingscliff is a two-and-a-half hour drive from the Sunshine Coast along the Bruce Highway.
STAYING THERE
Peppers Salt Resort and Spa is located at Bells Blvd, Kingscliff. Room prices start at $172 a night for a hotel room with buffet breakfast. Self-contained rooms are priced from $232 a night. Visit pepperssalt.com.au
PLAYING THERE
Kingscliff markets are held in Jack Bayliss Park on Marine Parade on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 7am to 1pm. There is a wide range of fresh produce, gourmet food, fashion, flowers and art on offer.
A recent patient, aged 80, with a history of high blood pressure, previously suffered a heart attack at the age of 50, presented with a dangerously high aortic blood pressure of 150/110, caused by inflammation in the heart tissues, though he had been medicated for the previous 30 years. With this type of investigation, 2 forms of infection were found as well as high levels of inflammation produced by triggers in his diet. Within 2 months, his blood pressure normalised, within 10 months his cholesterol and triglycerides dropped to within normal levels, and inflammatory markers were reduced. He was then able to remove his medication with the support of his doctor after 30 years. Specific blood and stool testing is necessary to identify the type of bacterial, viral or fungal infection. Each type of infection will respond differently to different types of treatment. Accurate treatment measures are then undertaken resulting in complete recovery, rather than relying on medications to control symptoms for life. Medications to control symptoms rather than treating the cause may lead to side effects, which may create further health complications in the future, which is why it is important to completely investigate your particular circumstances. Avoid heart disease easily with the right testing and treatment, without the need for lifelong medication. Reduce your risk of heart disease for life, for you and your family’s sake. Visit advancedwellness.com.au for a FREE ½ hour consultation.

DESTINY’S CHILD
A Sunshine Coast mum takes on the sordid world of child sex slavery. WORDS: Sam Walker
F
Michelle Winser at the Destiny Cafe & Restaurant in Chiang Rai, Thailand, with two rescued girls who are now employed in the cafe.
reeing children from slavery is no mean feat, but for Michelle Winser it is a passion that has turned into a full-time job. The Coast mum of three with a big heart is the CEO of Destiny Rescue Australia – an organisation headquartered at Warana and dedicated to rescuing children from slavery – mostly those forced or sold into brothels in Asia. If you thought slavery was an antiquated notion from an era long gone, think again. Winser says it’s estimated there are 27 million slaves globally – more than at any other period in history. It is a figure she wants to see radically reduced and preferably eliminated. But she admits there’s a long way to go. Destiny Rescue achieved its 1000th rescue at the end of 2014. It’s a small number in the scheme of an escalating global issue, but every rescue makes a difference. “One thousand against 27 million – it’s not that different, but now there’s 1000 children that have a chance at a better life,” Winser says.

PROFILE
And that’s what drives her. “It’s not OK to have sex with children,” she says. She gets angry, frustrated and saddened by the many people she talks to who simply brush off the issue of slavery with “that’s what happens over there”. She is working to change the attitudes of Australians, particularly the men who travel to Asia and use the brothels. It is, after all, a supply and demand issue. “I’m really huge on not just getting these girls out but re-educating our men over here,” Winser says. “These are young girls and they have feelings.” Winser started working for Destiny Rescue in 2013, but has been involved with the organisation since 2011. She jokes that she and her husband are a crazy couple that don’t do holidays – previously they joined their church group on a trip to Vanuatu to build schools. In 2011, they joined Destiny Rescue on a trip to Thailand to learn more about child slavery. On that trip she was sitting next to Destiny Rescue founder, Tony Kirwan on the plane and he invited them to join him on a rescue. “He took us to bars. We would just sit at bars with these young prostitutes and play board games until three in the morning. “It kept them safe from other men,” she says. “We came back from our trip really hungry to do more and not really knowing what.” Some 18 months later, she messaged Kirwan and said only four per cent of Australians knew what Destiny Rescue was and they were all in Queensland. He immediately offered her the job of raising awareness and she and her husband relocated to New South Wales.
Eighteen months later she had rallied 75 advocates who held stalls at fetes, markets and fair trade meetings to raise the organisation’s profile, raise money and to sell jewellery made by rescued girls. Last year she moved back to Queensland to take up the role of CEO. “I’m just a really boring mum with a soft heart,” she says. “I’m not the smartest kid on the block and I’m not the best speaker – we’re just parents with kids.” She says five per cent of children rescued from sexual slavery are boys. Many of the children have been sold by their families – a concept difficult for Australians to imagine. “I feel really blessed that we live in the time and the place that we live in and that I never have to make that decision to sell one (of my children) to feed the rest,” Winser says. Winser loves the raids – when the Destiny Rescue crew team up with local police and raid a brothel. They can save up to 30 children at a time. Unfortunately, corruption is rife and she says only one in six raids is successful. But she is thankful they can make a difference to those who are successfully rescued. “It’s a real holistic approach. It’s not just a rescue and run,” she says. “We make sure they’re empowered and their destiny can be changed.” They go through the same psychological training program designed for child soldiers in Africa, then they are put through school, trained in a vocation or provided a job. Destiny Rescue Cafe and Restaurant in Chiang Rai, Thailand and Kampong Cham, Cambodia, train rescued children in hospitality before they move on to further employment. All proceeds from the cafes go to supporting Destiny Rescue.

MY BODY
BOY, OH BOY
Beautiful blush Haven’t worn blush for years? It’s now time to make the investment. Blush doesn’t just add colour but can contour, illuminate, soften and accentuate. Try Napoleon Perdis Blush Patrol, $60, a blush and bronze powder that gives a youthful glow that lasts all day. Don’t want to spend quite so much? The Body Shop Lip and Cheek Stain, $21.95, delivers a natural-looking soft glow. A little goes a long way, so this product will keep on giving.
While you are at the beauty counter, grab a moisturiser or two for your man. Try Dermalogica’s Daily Defense, $52.50, a lightweight daytime moisturiser that suits all skin types. Head to dermalogica.com.au. Kiehl’s Facial Fuel, $34 for 75ml, does what it says on the packet, invigorating skin and helping to eliminate spots. Head to kiehls.com.au.
High and dry Not all dry shampoos are created equal. Our pick of the bunch? Klorane’s Gentle Oat Milk Dry Shampoo, $6.50 for 50ml. It has a mild fragrance, and not only removes greasiness but makes your hair look freshly blow dried. From Priceline and selected chemists.
LUSH ROSEHIP OIL If you haven’t stocked up on rosehip oil for winter, now’s the time. The product helps to soften skin and provide antioxidant protection. We like Trilogy’s Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+, $29.95. Just apply two or three drops on damp skin before you moisturise. From Priceline.
Pretty little lies
A new study of 2000 British women has shed light on the beauty lies women tell. The top five beauty rituals women hide from their partners are facial hair removal (25 per cent), shaving armpits (20 per cent), cutting toenails (17 per cent), squeezing spots (17 per cent), and removing hard skin from feet (16 per cent). One in 15 women admit to waking up early to apply makeup before seeing their partners, with one in 10 confirming they also regularly Photoshop their selfies.

MY LIFE
HEALTHY MUM, HAPPY MUM Nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara offers seven steps to a healthier lifestyle.
H
appy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mums out there. As a mum, I know it can be easy to forget about ourselves and our own health and wellness. These seven steps are especially for mums, but apply to anyone striving for better health. 1. Eat real foods, avoid refined and processed foods and additives. 2. Stop worrying about the fat, salt and sugar in packaged food and concentrate on the ingredients. If the ingredients are real food then the fat, salt and sugar will work itself out. 3. Avoid refined wheat. Choose gluten-free options like coconut flour or ancient grains that have not been hybridised. 4. Engage in mindful movement – take the stairs, park in the farthest carpark so you have to walk, and try not to use mechanical devices to save energy
and time, but use the wonderful legs that you have. 5. Quality sleep is very important so make sure you get a good night’s rest. Dim lights and use electronic screens at least two to three hours before bed to allow the body’s evolutionary biorhythms to work correctly. 6. Listen to the whispers of your body so they don’t turn into screams. Know what foods create inflammation (stomach upset, aches, pains, headaches or weight gain overnight) and avoid these foods. 7. Become informed and educated about food, and don’t be cajoled by advertising and marketing, as these are there to sell a product, not necessarily the truth.

MY OPINION
SEKISUI: WE BLEW IT
JUST IN TIME FOR TEA
In voting against the Sekisui House development at Yaroomba, the Sunshine Coast missed a golden opportunity, writes Bill Darby.
Sami Muirhead marvels at the incredible speed of that royal birth and subsequent photo shoot.
W
ell, old Princess Kate is set to have the best Mother’s Day ever. Her gift came a tiny bit early in the form of a ‘sleeping cutie’ princess. I am still gobsmacked, mind you, about how on earth Kate managed to arrive at hospital, deliver a perfect looking little girl, pop on some lip gloss to front the cameras in her lemon designer dress, whack a bonnet on the wee babe, and then snuggle up to her Prince on the hospital steps looking like the cat that swallowed the canary. I love Kate. I refuse to erase her wedding from my DVD hard drive. Sad, but true. I would not delete the four-hour fairytale nuptials even when my husband begged me to make room for the series finale of Breaking Bad. My favourite story of the year has been the Russian newspaper column claiming Kate’s birth was faked because The Duchess looked far too dazzling when she emerged from the Lindo Wing. I certainly did not leave hospital glowing and looking a little as though I had just had some nice tea and cucumber sandwiches before lying down for a quick pedi and mani. In fact, I often forgot to wear a bra in public and do not think I brushed my hair for weeks after all of my three very non-glamourous and long labours. Luckily, Kate is not the unmade bed the rest of us non-royals appear to be and she did have an entire grooming team behind her postnatal preening. Or
maybe she just wanted to get home to Kensington Palace in time for tea and to start nurturing her daughter. We all crave routine and home once we get our precious babes in our arms. I thought Kate and William must have had mixed feelings as they cradled their little princess and shared her with the world. The little soul will forever now be stalked by paparazzi and be photographed every day of her life, the same way her grandmother was chased without mercy. Diana would be so happy for her son now, having his own brood. There is a price to pay for a life of luxury and a cupboard full of tiaras. But for now, the world is smitten from a distance, as the new family bond together behind strong walls. I wonder if little Prince George has realised yet he is going to have to share his empire, starting with his Lego, with the ‘spare heir’. I received the best Mother’s Day gift early as well, thanks to the princess. My precious four year-old asked me to write a letter to Kate and Wills with a name suggestion fitting for a royal babe. The name was ‘Oceana’. Now that modern day moniker never made the short list with the bookies did it? Somehow I cannot imagine ‘Princess Oceana Of Cambridge’ making the royal roll call. For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.
I
have followed with interest the public debate over the Sekisui House Yaroomba project. This plan included the construction of a ten-storey luxury hotel and number of residential buildings with an average of about seven storeys. Sekisui House is a global developer, internationally awarded for its commitment to environmental innovation. Well before pen was put to paper, Sekisui had an unambiguous direction from the council that tourism infrastructure was a preferred use for the Yaroomba land. Originally, Sekisui proposed considerably greater building heights and dwelling densities than the planning scheme permitted and local residents strenuously objected. These hundreds of objections resulted in the council’s decision last week to vote against the proposed development. I’m not entirely sure we should be proud of the outcome. Reading the daily media, this has been a win for the people but have we really arrived at the best result for the region? We live in a democracy and this freedom entitles communities to protest against any change they feel might detrimentally affect them. In this instance however, the commentary seemed one-sided and the reporting became personal. The media was at times alarmist and misleading, and regional economic issues were ignored. One wonders if the pendulum has
swung too far when the majority can so often be disaffected by a vocal few. We live within a global economic framework that relies on growth. There are no fences. As the population continues to grow, employment numbers and the amount of goods and services produced in the economy must also grow. That’s the system. The development approval for Sekisui would have affected the cosiness and serenity of the hamlet of Yaroomba, there is no doubt. Neighbouring property values would have also gone through the roof. Sadly, this project is the only option on the table for much needed tourism infrastructure. It aligned perfectly with the Regional Economic Development Strategy as well as providing a much needed jobs boost. The most likely outcome from the council’s decision is low-rise housing. The surrounding ecosystem will still suffer the impact of an increased population and Yaroomba will eventually shed its sleepy feel. The outcomes of this debate have left question marks over the approval process. The system needs to be able to function for the council to deliver a net regional benefit and many would say this hasn’t happened on this occasion. BUSINESS AND FINANCE
GDP BOOSTED BY HOME BUILDING Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
R
esidential dwelling construction in Australia continues to grow strongly. In particular, higherdensity housing has been booming and is up 35 per cent on a year ago. The building cycle has some supportive fundamentals. The trajectory of new loan commitments issued for dwelling construction across investors and owner-occupiers is still sufficiently firm that residential building approvals should keep trending higher. Such loans were up 11 per cent during the past six months and 19 per cent on a year ago. Rising dwelling prices are supportive here – Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are leading the way, while Adelaide and
Perth are the laggards. Those priced out of the detached dwelling market are cascading down into demand for more affordable, newly created housing, which skews demand toward higher-density projects. All categories of non-residential work – commercial (retail and office), industrial, and other (e.g. health and education buildings) – have been rolling over since mid-last year, following earlier double-digit gains. Given the lumpy nature of such work, and the fact that a single approval in these categories can relate to a project lasting many years, this does not have many implications for GDP through the construction channel over the horizon that we can reasonably forecast. Overall, the home building sector is contributing more to GDP than it has for most of the past decade. While the Reserve Bank has been disappointed by the overall investment commitments shown to date in this cycle, home building clearly hasn’t disappointed.
Companies such as Adelaide Brighton, Boral and CSR continue to benefit from the demand for the building materials involved in construction. It is also worthwhile mentioning that Lend Lease and Mirvac are at the forefront of listed companies involved in constructing these large higher-density projects. Further on non-residential investment, companies involved in building roads and other transport infrastructure would have breathed a collective sigh of relief as Mike Baird’s Liberal party retained power in New South Wales. The result has delivered the Baird government a mandate to privatise the state’s electricity distribution networks, which will in turn fund a large-scale roads program. Investment in the state’s roads is expected to reach nearly $15 billion over the coming years, with the $11 billion WestConnex project the centrepiece of the New South Wales Government’s infrastructure plan.
The Federal Government’s 2014–15 Building Australia’s Infrastructure report also provides a useful guide to the major project pipeline in New South Wales and across the country as a whole. hat is it about the French that they have to have their own version of everything? French cricket. French toast. French kissing. French fries. Some of it good, admittedly. But always with their own stamp. And so it is with French cars. Uniquely French. Very different. All quirky in one way or another. Sometimes this Gallic flair is a very good thing. The famous Citroen 2CV, for instance one of the classic machines, albeit seriously quirky. Then there have been less

memorable French quirks. Remember the infamous Renault Megane with its bulbous, oversized rear end forever to be known as the Butt Car. Not long after that, Citroen decided to reinvent the wheel literally with a unique hub style steering wheel on its C4 model. In that car, the centre of the steering wheel stayed fixed while the rest of the wheel revolved around it. Kind of clever but, like most attempts to improve the wheel, it was short-lived. Now Citroen’s corporate cousin, Peugeot, has carried out a similar reinvention of the wheel or at least the dashboard - with its latest-model 308

increments read from left to right, while the tacho reads from right to left. So as you accelerate the needles actually move towards each other, rather than in the same direction as with most vehicles. The whole thing works, without doubt but takes a bit of getting used to and feels a bit gimmicky. And to be honest, gimmicks are hardly necessary with this car because, beyond the quirks, the 308 is a seriously good machine. It’s a joyous thing to drive with a punchy-yet-refined diesel engine, a relatively smooth-shifting automatic

hatchback. It’s called the i-Cockpit. Instead of the normal layout, Peugeot has shrunk the 308s steering wheel to almost miniature proportions and shifted most of the instrument binnacle high up on the dashboard. It means the driver looks above the arc of the steering wheel rather than through it - to check speed, engine temperature, fuel levels and the like. Clever, because you can get that information without taking your eyes off the road. But odd. Making things even more odd is the fact that the speedo and tacho are mirror-images of each other. transmission and lovely driving dynamics. It turns with razor-sharp precision, soaks up bumps and road imperfections and zips along with a minimum of fuss. A large proportion of Europe’s motoring critics agree, recently judging it to be European Car of the Year in 2014. That’s no faint praise given that other contenders included the likes of Mercedes-Benz’s fabulous new C-Class. Given the 308 has always enjoyed a fond place in the Australian market, this latest version should be very well received. It breaks new ground in more than one way. In addition to the unusual instrument format, Peugeot has produced a dashboard and centre stack almost completely devoid of switches, knobs or buttons. Instead, most cabin functions (audio, telephone, sat-nav, climate control) are accessed via a centrally-mounted, 9-inch colour touch-screen with a series of click-through functions. It makes sense, is relatively intuitive to use and, although it might sound rather stark, the minimally-styled, featureless centre console and dashboard looks classy and impressive.
APRIL ADVENTURE A DVENTURE
DEALS
Like one of those sleek modern apartments where you’re afraid to wear your shoes inside. This pared-back cockpit, combined with the unusual drivers instruments, makes for a slightly odd sensation when you first get behind the wheel. But once you settle in you start to appreciate the undoubted qualities of the car itself. As we’ve come to expect from Peugeot, the 308 is finished and
presented to a very high standard. We drove the higher-spec GT model that enjoyed a long list of features, as well as supple leather trim and luxuries including dual-zone climate control air, dynamic cruise control, emergency
collision alert and braking systems and electronic parking brake. Satellite navigation, high-end audio with Bluetooth connectivity and front and rear parking assist are also part of the package. The interior features high-quality soft-touch surfaces all around and tasteful, classy brushed alloy highlights on door handles, airconditioning vents and on surrounds of the instrument clusters. The high-tech engines in the 308, particularly the diesels, deliver power with impressive efficiency through technology, including stopstart system, low-friction and optimised weight savings. Our GT enjoyed the thrust of 133 kilowatts and a hefty 400N, despite a ridiculouslylow thirst of just 4L/100km over the combined cycle. That dips as low as 3.5 litres for every 100km on the highway while around town it still sips no more than 4.7L/100km. Those numbers are highly impressive. Perhaps the French have invented their own version of physics, as well.
PEUGEOT 308
HOW BIG? Mid-sized hatchback with ample room for a growing family of four or five plus a very handy 435 litre cargo area. HOW FAST? Even though we drove the fuelconscious diesel model, it produces sparkling performance that would rival many petrol rivals. HOW THIRSTY? This is where the turbo-diesel comes into its own. The 308 sips a miserly 4L/100km with equally low emissions. HOW MUCH? Not the cheapest in its class, but the aptly-named Access model starts at $21,990 plus onroads. Our GT model would set you back $41,990 plus onroads.

THE ASTRA IS BACK
H
olden’s Astra has been revived with the company unveiling the new look vehicle alongside the Cascada convertible. The introduction of the two cars marks the beginning of an exciting product onslaught by Holden, promising to deliver 24 major vehicle launches and 36 powertrain combinations in the next five years. The European manufactured Astra and Cascada are both designed and engineered in Germany, at Opel’s Russelsheim base. Engineering integrity and the promise of outstanding road
performance is backed by long and demanding validation testing 10,000kms of which for VXR was completed at the iconic mecca for all driving enthusiasts; the Nurburgring Nordschliefe track. Holden’s sales executive director Peter Keley says Astra and Cascada will act as aspirational, halo vehicles to Holden, and dealers are excited to take delivery of the cars. “Astra and Cascada exhibit all the hallmarks of premium European manufactured cars. Both are visually stunning with great road presence and exceptional build quality,’’ Keley says. “We are confident these are the right cars for Australia, giving buyers a vehicle to aspire to own and this is something echoed by our dealers. “Dealers nationwide have expressed interest and excitement in Astra and Cascada and are looking forward to getting their hands on them.”

TOUGHER TRITON
he rest of the world will benefit from Australian standards with the new generation Mitsubishi Triton undergoing Australian-specific improvements for the global market. The new Triton was thoroughly tested in Australia during its development with multiple exercises carried out on sand, gravel and coarse chip bitumen, along with towing and heavy duty off-road testing. The resulting changes for the Australian market played a central role in determining the global tune of Triton’s engine’s torque characteristics, high speed stability on gravel surfaces and overall towing performance and stability. Australian customer feedback was also instrumental in the new Triton’s early stages.
Mitsubishi Motor’s Triton program global lead Koichi Namiki travelled extensively within Australia to personally meet with existing Triton owners across mining, farming, small and medium businesses to understand their day-today vehicle use. This information helped shape the 2016 Triton program, ensuring the new model would perform well in Australia’s unique local conditions and climate. Mitsubishi Motors Australian chief executive Mutsuhiro Oshikiri says more than 295,000 Tritons have been sold locally. “Triton sales continue to go from strength to strength in Australia in line with the LCV market, so it’s essential the new Triton is a perfect match for our customers,’’ he says.

WORDS DON’T DO JUSTICE... PURE WATERFRONT OPULENCE 21 Artunga Place, Pelican Waters Dominating its 845m2 waterfront position overlooking a huge body of water with the Golden Beach skyline in the distance, is this exquisite residence that faces due north. It is entirely evident from architecture, to position and view, this is the absolute top end of the Pelican Waters waterfront precinct. The kitchen is like no other! Practical designer features include a huge butler’s pantry with backlit quartz island bench with stainless steel and granite tops to name a few. It spills out to a sensational outdoor entertaining area, with a pool, deck and spa area. Of course, living on the water requires an alfresco deck on the water’s edge and pontoon to moor the boat for easy, safe ocean access. Not a stone left unturned to provide the ultimate in luxury waterfront living. The pictures speak novels and to encapsulate all this house has to offer is difficult. An immediate inspection is required.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
That was one good bump in the swell! Last Saturday morning I watched Julian Wilson paddle out at the Caloundra bar and proceed to drop into a few bombs. I think he needed a f ash light to get out of one given how deep he got! Other locals were towing in at Kawana and scoring the same. Hopefully you all got something. Me? Some good f oggings and paddle practise. Anyway, Monday morning was fantastic fun with the crowd sleeping in. Sunday is looking the goods for this weekend. So get amongst it. It doesn’t look good for the Brazil leg of the WSL. Hopefully, Wilson or Fanning can take it to them. Pray for big surf.
FISHING REPORT
with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Bream numbers are increasing and good fun to catch, although they are undersized so early in the season. Cotton Tree is the spot on the top of the tide. Serious anglers are drifting along the sand bank edges and working bait for jacks, trevally and f athead around Goat Island. Poppers and plastics are worth a try. SURF: Rough conditions are making open beaches diff cult to f sh. The protected headlands of Point Cartwright and Pincushion are returning chopper tailor and sea bream with baby blue pillies the best bait. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, the Inner Gneerings is working on the change of the tide for anglers willing to berley. You can get Spanish mackerel and long tail tuna on f oated baits and if the bait sinks down to the shallow reef, look out for sweetlip, parrot and cod. The Barwon Banks is returning southern fusiliers, snapper and pearlies. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is f ring for bass and spangled perch, but don’t use lead sinkers in this impoundment. Lake Macdonald is another local dam f ring for bass on medium divers and live shrimps. The best place is the drop-off along the weed bed opposite the boat ramp.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] With impulsive Mars charging into your sign, you want things done quickly! But this week, Saturn has other ideas. Slow down, it will save you time in the long run. When it comes to a relationship, too, you’re keen to zoom full steam ahead. But you have to be patient.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Routine responsibilities may be getting you down, and leave you daydreaming about a heavenly escape. Back in the real world, Saturn dampens displays of affection. Just remember you are loved and appreciated, even if others don’t show it.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] You may find it difficult to let go of grievances this week. If you stew over perceived slights and sweat the small stuff, then you’ll just end up feeling stressed and exhausted. Avoid getting drawn into complicated discussions.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Your mind is consumed with work issues (or a volunteer project) but don’t let it consume you. Keep your options open. And avoid worrying about situations that will probably never happen. Instead, maintain a sense of perspective and focus on the here and now.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Be extra careful when communicating with others this week. Take your time and think things through before you respond. When it comes to a work matter, volunteer project or job interview, make sure you pump up the Libran charm and dress to impress!
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Money matters look challenging. It’s imperative that you work out a strict budget and stick to it. Romantic relationships and international friendships are favoured on the weekend. Socialising with loved ones puts a spring in your step and a smile on your dial.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] You’re keen to power ahead with a project (or potential partner) but expect frustrations, delays or challenges this week. Switch your settings to cruise control, and use the down time to review your approach and reassess your plans. A friend or family member who needs help.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] This week there’s a full dose of frustration coming. Calm down! Your motto for the week comes from Reinhold Niebuhr: “Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] A work project or business idea that started as a vague dream has definite potential. But it’s not the time to be an stubborn. You will need help from other people to make it happen. Are you blaming circumstances or those around you for delays? Take a good look at yourself.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] A chat with a teacher or mentor puts a current problem in perspective. But relations with a work colleague or family member could be strained. Find smart ways to re-establish a connection. On the weekend you’re at your creative and compassionate best.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] This week’s stars favour group activities, social networking, creative projects and having fun with friends. The more you network, the more successful you’ll be. Money could be tight so plan accordingly. It’s a fabulous time to go on a first date, too, or write a love letter.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Hold your horses, rams! You’re in a hurry to get your message out loud and clear but, if you rush too much, you may broadcast the wrong message. The Mars/Saturn opposition can also create mega frustrations and delays. Dig deep to find some patience.

THE L AST W ORD
PUT A SMILE ON YOUR DIAL Australians are mostly a happy bunch – but we could be happier, writes Richard O’Leary.
P
ick up any newspaper or watch the TV news and you would think Australia is hell on earth. Doom and gloom about the economy, murder and mayhem on the streets, and plenty of corrupt politicians and police. But I’m not convinced. I think most people are pretty happy with the way things are going. We live in relatively rich country, with low levels of violence compared to other nations and our democracy, although not perfect, is way ahead of most political systems around the world. But you don’t have to take my word for it. The World Happiness Report has just been released by the United Nations and Australia is in the top 10 for the third time in a row. The secrets to happiness on a national scale? Well, the writers of the report suggest: 1. Happier countries tend to be
richer countries. But more important for happiness than income are social factors like the strength of social support, the absence of corruption and the degree of personal freedom. 2. Unemployment causes as much unhappiness as bereavement or separation. At work, job security and good relationships do more for job satisfaction than high pay and convenient hours. 3. Behaving well makes people happier. 4. Mental health is the biggest single factor affecting happiness in any country. Yet only a quarter of mentally ill people get treatment for their condition in advanced countries and fewer in poorer countries. 5. Stable family life and enduring marriages are important for the happiness of parents and children. 6. In advanced countries, women are happier than men, while the position in
poorer countries is mixed. A combination of those factors saw Switzerland come out at the top of the sliding scale of smiles, followed by Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Canada, Finland, Netherlands, Sweden and New Zealand. And something becomes perfectly clear when you consider those ahead of us – people in colder climates seem to be happier. It seems our glorious summers, energising autumns and springs, and mild winters can be real downers. Pessimists may say it’s only going to get worse as climate change continues to turn up the global thermostat, but I’d prefer to look at the positives. Australia is still ahead of 148 other countries which have been surveyed, and as Abraham Lincoln said: “Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.” roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au
