OUR STORY
My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
love winter on the Sunshine Coast. There, I said it. The mornings are crisp, the days are sunny and the car parks are empty. With just a couple of weeks until our ‘cold’ season officially starts, My Weekly Preview has uncovered some of those special places to visit, and a few experiences not to be missed. Also in this edition, we go horse racing, or to be more precise, we go shopping for what to wear at the races. The barrier stalls open on the Sunshine Coast racing carnival tomorrow with the running of the Caloundra Cup and we check out the latest in fashions on the field. We have a quick chat with the woman behind the Sunshine Coast Real Food Festival, test drive a new Mazda which has an unusual selling point (Hint: it’s easy on the ears), and stay a few nights in Belfast. As always, there’s plenty of property, including all the latest news from the world of real estate. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
EAT YOUR HEART OUT Julie Shelton is the director of the Sunshine Coast Real Food Festival held in Maleny each September, a celebration of good local food that promotes informed food choices. FIRST JOB?
and counselled (imagine his Czechaccented English), “My dear, you have two choices: you must either return to university and complete your degree, or you must become interesting!”
Travel agent at Webster Travel in Hobart. I’d dropped out of a poorly chosen Bachelor of Arts and was filling in time until I had to choose what to study next.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES…
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
My 10-year-old son, Oliver, six chooks, one rooster, two drakes and two ducks (but it might be three drakes and one duck).
In San Francisco in 2008, at Slow Food Nation, I met four of my heroes (all writers about food, farming and politics) and had an epiphany: I would champion good food by raising awareness of the issues and marrying it with responsibility, politics and pleasure.
FIRST CAR? A Hillman Imp, complete with crank handle. I recall it was manufactured the same year I was. The front seats were removable and I could drive it from the rear seat.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?
FAVOURITE BOOK? That’s a tough one. Glancing at my bookcase, I’d say Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance or The Name of the Rose.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? I’m currently reading Dan Barber’s The Third Plate – Field Notes on the Future of Food. It has inspired and motivated me more than I could have predicted.
FAVOURITE SONG? Only one? Oh, this is torture! For classical, it would probably be Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor. For contemporary music, Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk is currently on high rotation in our house.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Just over 20 years – I moved here from Tasmania, via Townsville.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? It’s Hotel California. You can check out any time you like… I was an organic farmer in Conondale for ten years: I am the soil. This is now home.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Maleny, with all her quirky folk, spectacular vistas and great coffee. But if all options were open, I’d probably live by the ocean in Noosa somewhere.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? I have a well-worn path: Mary Cairncross Reserve to Moffat Beach, then to Cotton Tree or Peregian Beach
for lunch, Little Cove beach for a swim, dinner at Noosaville, then home via at least one of the lookouts along the range.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Two. We need a venue for large-scale events, conferences and concerts. And we need to fix the Bruce Highway, particularly south of Caloundra. It’s a nightmare.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? My father’s colleague, a Czechoslovakian Count, on finding out that I’d dropped out of university for the second time, dramatically took me by the shoulders
When I see obscene amounts of government money being spent on initiatives that don’t have practical benefit to people who most need it. Oh, and slow and/or intermittent internet access.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Don’t stress about leaving university – you’ll accumulate many undergraduate degrees worth of knowledge through your travelling, work and life experiences that will better suit your pragmatic, curious, holistic and entrepreneurial nature.
NRL OR AFL AND WHO DO YOU FOLLOW? Um… Novak Djokovic?

APP OF THE WEEK
LATEST PODCASTS
BAG OF TRICKS
No object can escape the growing obsession with smart technology, not even the humble suitcase. Check out Bluesmart – the world’s first smart connected carry-on luggage. Through the use of an app, which connects to a SIM card inside the suitcase, users can lock and unlock Bluesmart, weigh it, track its location and even be notified if it’s accidentally left behind. The built-in battery is an added bonus as it has the ability to charge a mobile phone six times over. This invention raised more than $2 million through crowdfunding platform Indiegogo and 7000 units have been pre-sold.
STRANGERS
Do we ever really know someone? Do we truly know what they have endured, what they face on a daily basis and what shaped them into the person they now are? This podcast will have you hooked after the first episode, as it delves into the lives of the strangers we meet, the strangers we can become and the strange places we go. It’s been described as inspiring and beautiful and explores the struggle of human connection through real life stories. Launching a few years ago, with an emotional story about a father whose son stood trial for murder, Strangers has continued to grow in popularity and strength. It is the work of Peabody Award winner Lea Thau and a part of popular American radio station KCRW’s Independent Producer Project and the popular PRX’s Radiotopia collective.
Bluesmart will sell for around $570. Visit indiegogo.com.
FEEDLY Research shows that the average person now spends between two and three hours a day on their smartphone. But, for those who spend time regularly scrolling through blogs, news sites and channels, Feedly might offer a solution. This app enables you to save time by curating your favourite sites. Users can add numerous blogs and YouTube channels to their Feedly so it is easily accessible in one place. Plus, it is powered by RSS and integrates with Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. The app also includes a search option with the opportunity to browse popular topics and blogs for tech, business, marketing, design, cooking and photography. This app is free and available on Android and IOS.
TAKE CHARGE
Have you ever headed out for the day and forgot to charge your phone? The creators of the myFC JAQ claim they are changing the world of portable charging. The JAQ generates power from water and salt contained in a slim power card. Users connect their smartphone via a micro-USB cable to the JAQ and the chemical reaction charges the device. It’s instant, smart, clean portable charging.
To listen visit: kcrw.com/news-culture/ shows/strangers.
Prices are yet to be announced but the JAQ is expected to be on sale later this year. Visit myfcpower.com.

CHILL TIME
Time to rug up and explore the Coast without the summer crowds. WORDS: Tamara Simoneau
We asked some well-known locals and some famous faces who still call the Coast home what they love doing during a Sunshine Coast winter. LISA CURRY – LISACURRY.COM.AU My favourite winter activity is to go camping at Double Island Point. It’s winter Queensland-style, where you can still lie on the beach, go for walks, paddle in the glassy ocean and at night sit around a campf re and drink some Stone’s ginger wine to warm the insides, then warm up and snuggle under plenty of blankets. It’s quiet, relaxing and a great way to spend a couple of days to regenerate. MAYOR MARK JAMIESON – SUNSHINE COAST MAYOR The things I most enjoy about winter are the clear blue skies and the beautiful crisp views. I also love homemade pea and ham soup. There’s nothing better to eat on a cold winter’s day.
T
o call the months between May and September ‘winter’ here on the Coast is probably using the term loosely to anyone who lives south of the Gold Coast. Sure, the mercury can sometimes take an impressive dive overnight and the mornings are crisp, but keeping your Ugg boots on past 9am could be overkill. It’s a pretty special version of winter, with soothingly glassy seas to stroll by, ruby red strawberries to pick and cosy hinterland pubs to patronise. Most of us will pack away the boardies and the bikinis for this short-lived change in our beautiful weather, but that’s no reason to stay inside. We’ve put together your ultimate guide to winter weekends on the Coast. So whip off those Uggs and get out there and enjoy this glorious time of year.
FREE
The beaches are virtually all ours during winter, all 100 kilometres of them. So if you’re lucky enough to be a local, heading down for a Sunday afternoon stroll in the sand is the number one free thing to do. The sand is cool, and the water feels warm. What’s not to love about a soul-refreshing trip to the seaside, especially when it’s in your backyard? The rock pools at Alexandra Headland and Moffat Beach are hard to 12 My Weekly Preview | May 15, 2015

beat for the kids, and the wide open stretches at Kawana and the Maroochy north shore make meandering a perfect way to recharge. A picnic at the Noosa Botanic Gardens, on the shores of Lake Macdonald, during the Sunshine Coast
passage for Coasties. If you haven’t done it yet, you need to. If you have, then do it again this winter. It can take as little as 40 minutes to hike this 208-metre-high isolated volcanic dome on a hasty round trip. Taking your time is worth it though, as the 360-degree views from the summit will take your breath away every single time. The track is well maintained and mostly pretty easy, with some steep sections near the top. Children about five and over will find it an adventure, and plenty of parents regularly tote their babes up and back in baby carriers.
FAMILY
Pick your own strawberries winter is alfresco dining at its best. Those pesky flies and mosquitos have all but hibernated, and instead of spending the midday hours sheltering from the blistering sun, you can stroll to your heart’s content around the eight-hectare gardens to work up an appetite, then eat a packed lunch at your leisure. Hiking Mount Coolum is a rite of
Pick-your-own strawberries just taste better somehow. The season runs from June until October/November. McMartins Strawberry Farm (at the end of Sports Road in Bli Bli) is open daily from 8.30 to 4.30. This family-run farm on the Maroochy River is also home to the Strawberry Lane Ice Creamery, makers of award-winning ice-creams. Their raspberry flavour is a past champion from the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show. Strawberry Fields (133 Laxton Road, Palmview) has been run by the Carmichael Family since 1980 and is well known for its delectable berries. Beside the PYO fields, there’s a gift shop with local crafts and produce, a cafe filled
SAMI MUIRHEAD – MIX FM I love Geordie Lane in the Hinterland (geordielane.com.au) for the amazing homemade berry and ginger scones. You have not sinned until you sit on their deck overlooking the green rolling hills and eat the best homemade scones smothered in fresh jam and Maleny whipped cream. Then you can potter around the gorgeous little rooms that are stuffed with eccentric f nds and rare vintage treasures. JENNIFER NICHOLS – SEVEN LOCAL NEWS Camping at Imbil, rugged up around an open f re, swapping tales with friends and family over a glass of red on the banks of Yabba Creek. Island Reach campground is my favourite quick weekend getaway because you can walk into town and enjoy pub food (think lamb shanks and mash) at old school prices. In the morning, the mist swirls over the water and there’s so much exploring of nature to do. YVONNE SAMPSON – CHANNEL 9 SPORTS & THE FOOTY SHOW When I get home to the Sunshine Coast in winter I love saddling up and going for a horse ride through the Mapleton State Forest or along Noosa North Shore. A slow plod is the perfect pace to soak up the sun and get salty with your equine friend. myweeklypreview.com.au

with mouth-watering treats, haystacks to climb, and vast grassy lawns if you want to bring a picnic. Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show is June 12 to 14 at the Nambour Showgrounds on Coronation Avenue. The annual event first started in 1900 when the Coast was built more on agriculture than tourism. It has run every year since, except for five years during WW2, so this year is the 110th show. These days it’s about uniting town and country with stock competitions, horse riding, V8 shows, fireworks and the frenetic fun of sideshow alley. A one-day family pass (two adults, two kids) is $40, but you can pre-purchase at any Sunshine Coast Heritage Bank for $35 from May 11. The African Children’s Choir has performed with celebrities like Bob Geldof, Annie Lennox and Will Smith, and now you can take the kids along and learn their world famous moves at a special workshop. The day after they perform at the Lake Kawana Community Centre on June 20, the choir will be at Coolum Primary School to make new friends, teach locals their songs and basically drum up a good time. Tickets for kids cost $2. For more information phone Hari Kotrotsios on 0414 635 407. Open Cockpit Weekend at the Queensland Air Museum at the Caloundra Aerodrome is July 4 to 5. If you’re a plane buff or budding aviation historian, or just looking for something out of the ordinary to do with your kids, then this is for you. Sit in the cockpit of a fighter jet or walk the aisles of a passenger plane from the 1930s. The museum opens from 9am to 4pm and a family pass is $40, which includes $5 to spend at the museum shop. Proceeds from the weekend go to Legacy. The Queensland Garden Expo from July 10 to 12 is expected to attract more than 35,000 to Nambour Showgrounds. Well-known experts including host of ABC’s Gardening Australia, Costa Georgiadis, will share their green-thumb
tips and there’ll be demonstrations and displays galore. Foodies will enjoy the giant kitchen garden on site and for the kids, a giant slide, jumping castle, playground and stilt-walkers will keep them entertained. More information at qldgardenexpo.com.au. The 14th annual Noosa Long Weekend from July 14 to 26 is a jampacked program of food, arts and
on July 19. There’ll be face painters, storytellers, magicians and more. Details are at noosalongweekend.com.

International cooking classes at Kitchen Carnivale (kitchencarnivale.com) are like taking a culinary trip across the world without leaving the Coast. Four migrant women from Vietnam, Mauritius, Iran
spoils at the end of the class. Classes are $65 and held at Nambour Community Centre on Shearer Street. The Sunday spit roast at the Apollonian Hotel at Boreen Point is just the kind of meal lazy winter weekends are made for. Originally built in the 1870’s during the Gympie Gold Rush at Apollonian Vale, the hotel was moved to its new home on Lake Cootharaba in 1987. It’s been carefully restored, along with an old railway worker’s quarters where you can stay overnight ($65 per double room). It’s not luxurious, but it is authentic. The wood-fired spit roast is prepared in a rustic bush kitchen and available every Sunday from 12.30 to 2pm ($20 per person).

The Brisbane girl with the big voice has been touring the world, and makes her stop in Maleny on June 6. Tickets are priced from $65. The Gympie Music Muster in the Amamoor State Forest is August 27 to 30. If you’ve never been, organisers say 2015 is the year to go. The lineup includes Adam Brand, Mental as Anything, Ian Moss, X-Factor sensation and Gympie local Caitlyn Shadbolt and Grammy winner Mary Chapin Carpenter, along with more than a hundred other artists on seven different stages. Three-day camping tickets are $299, with children under 12 free for the first time this year.

REVIEW
APPEAL ‘WASTE OF MONEY’ A NEW MOOLOOLABA Bruce and Denise Morcombe have described the legal wrangling over the appeal by their son’s killer as a waste of money. Queensland’s Chief Justice Tim Carmody withdrew from hearing the appeal of Brett Peter Cowan, who is convicted of murdering school boy Daniel Morcombe. Cowan’s lawyers argued the Chief Justice should be disqualif ed due to perceived bias after he met with child protection advocate Hetty Johnston. The Appeal Court will sit again on this matter on May 26.

DEADLY ROAD FEARS
A recent fatal car crash on the Yandina Coolum Road has triggered a review of the 100 kilometre-per-hour speed limit by the Department of Main Roads. Minister Mark Bailey says the community has raised concerns about the 11-kilometre stretch between Collins and Arcoona Roads at Yandina. Two people have been killed and another 14 injured on that section of the road since 2010.

MY OPINION
NEW RUNWAY NO FLIGHT OF FANCY Expanding the Sunshine Coast Airport is a no-brainer, writes Mayor Mark Jamieson.
T
he business of airports is exciting and complex, with every day bringing a different challenge. But any airport operator will tell you that they all have one thing in common – there are always some in the community that don’t support them at all. The Sunshine Coast Airport is no different, particularly when we are talking about building a new runway. There has been some inaccurate commentary recently from residents who will be negatively impacted by the new east-west runway at Sunshine Coast Airport. The impacts on that group of residents are acknowledged, but the reality is that this new runway
has been planned for decades. It is also a reality that today, far too many people drive to Brisbane for domestic and international flights. It is incomprehensible that we sit idly by and allow our reality to become one that requires every single person from the Sunshine Coast to drive to Brisbane for every single jet service. The new runway is proposed to be completed by 2020. We should not think for one second that the ‘do nothing’ option or the ‘widen the current runway option’ will not result in a future where everyone from the Sunshine Coast will be forced drive down the Bruce Highway to Brisbane to catch a jet. The current runway is too short, too narrow and its north-south alignment means planes invariably land with a cross wind. In high winds or bad weather, aircraft cannot take off or land on the existing runway, so passengers are either stranded or diverted to Brisbane or the Gold Coast. Forget the distraction about the
CASA exemption – it doesn’t matter if it’s the airport’s responsibility or the airlines’ responsibility. The runway is too short and too narrow and the narrow bodied A320s and B737s are the largest jet aircraft that can possibly land there. This means we will never get flights to anywhere further away than Melbourne or Auckland. Over the last few years we have
The reality is that this new runway has been planned for decades seen Air New Zealand land at Sunshine Coast Airport with 168 passengers but only take off with 139 passengers. This has nothing to do with ticket sales. This is a payload restriction that is put in place because the runway is too short. When it gets hot, flights from Melbourne are forced to leave
WIN! $1.5M
passengers behind or off-load in Brisbane. If you want to fly to Perth or Darwin direct from the Sunshine Coast, you can’t, because the runway is too short and too narrow for the aircraft that service these routes. And you can forget adding freight and providing opportunities for our agribusiness sector, because the runway is too short for aircraft needed to carry the freight. The airline business is a tough one and airlines must continue to find ways to be profitable. Larger, more fuel efficient aircraft are front and centre to their plans –yet planes like the A330 will never be able to land on the current runway; it’s too short and too narrow. Today’s reality is that the current runway has a rapidly approaching use-by date. We can sit idly by and await its imminent demise or we can get on with delivering the new runway and the $4.1 billion in economic benefits and 2200 jobs that come with it. The reality is, we don’t have a choice.

SLOVENIAN COACH MAKES A SPLASH
European import Uros Kralj is turning the Coast into a water polo powerhouse. Words: Leigh Robshaw
IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU
H
aving left his home country of Slovenia in January 2014 in search of a better life after the GFC shattered the tiny nation’s economy, water polo coach Uros Kralj landed in Brisbane, unsure of his future. After his talents were spotted while he was coaching the North Brisbane Polo Bears, he was invited to visit the Coast and coach the under 16s boys team, a move that proved fortuitous for both Kralj and the Sunshine Coast water polo community. In a short space of time, he has built up the sport locally and taken our teams from one success to another. Now living in Coolum, he fronts up to Kawana Aquatic Centre each day to coach the under 12s to under 18s boys teams at a state and national level, with some girls teams also coming on board. In March, the Sunshine Coast won a regional competition in Brisbane in every age group from under 13s to under 18s. In April, he took the under 16 boys to a win in the state championships and at Easter, the under 14s competed in the National Club Championships on the Gold Coast and finished second. “I’m pretty sure that’s the best result ever on the Sunshine Coast for a boys team,” says Kralj. “At the moment there’s around 80 kids training, but the numbers have been increasing lately,” he says. “We’re getting all these new kids from around the area; that’s what our aim is, to get a lot more kids involved.”
Uros Kralj at Kawana Aquatic Centre The Coast has a number of players with the determination and ability to qualify for the Olympics, such as Nick Porter and Hugh Anstey, who were recently selected for the Australian national youth squad (born in 1998) and Billy Miller and Ashleigh Roberts, who are in the national men’s and women’s teams respectively. But to fulfill our potential in the sport, the Coast needs better water polo facilities Kralj says, adding that in Slovenia, professional players train six to eight hours a day. Kawana and Noosa Aquatic Centres both offer water polo, but share facilities with swim squads. “It’s quite difficult to do some serious planning because the pool is not available all the time,” Kralj says.
“Training needs to be daily. That’s one of the things I’m really trying hard to change – the culture. Most of these players have been doing polo two or three times a week and separately doing swim squads. They have to do polo on a daily basis – at least three hours in the afternoon and on top of it they can do a morning session. It’s a very demanding sport.” Kralj says water polo is a safe sport that’s well-suited to Sunshine Coast kids. “On the Sunny Coast, they all love water. Water polo is a very healthy sport; not a lot of injuries involved. We can hear on a daily basis all the injuries in footy, rugby – there’s really not many in this sport, and it’s just a lot of fun. It’s water and a ball – what else do you want?” The 35-year-old was a member of the Slovenian national water polo team and has been coaching since he was 18, but couldn’t sustain his career in his home country, where unemployment is high and wages low. “Slovenia was one of the most successful countries in water polo but the situation in Europe is worse and worse; a lot of the clubs went bankrupt. I thought, I have to make some changes in my life. I wasn’t really sure if I was going to continue with this career. I saw that no jobs were available. To be honest when I came to Australia, I had no idea what I was going to do, but now things have changed, especially when I moved to the Sunshine Coast. The people at Kawana Aquatic Centre have seen some sort of potential.”

Miranda Kerr’s fresh look at the recent Met Gala in New York was created by celebrity makeup artist Lisa Storey, inspired by Kerr’s Louis Vuitton dress, using La Prairie products. Storey prepped Kerr’s skin with La Prairie Cellular Softening and Balancing Lotion and Cellular Swiss Ice Crystal Dry Oil. Storey created a gently contoured smokey eye with the Luxe Eyeliner Automatic in Noir and the Cellular Treatment Eye Colour Ensemble in Les Bruns. Other products used included the Skin Caviar Concealer and the Brightening Eye Treatment pen. The lashes were coated in Cellular Treatment Mascara Instant Build in Noir. On her lips, Kerr wore the Cellular Luxe Lip Enhancer and the Cellular Luxe Lip Colour in Almost Pink.

35,000 AT RISK OF DIABETES Data provided by Diabetes Queensland shows that on the Sunshine Coast and Noosa there are close to 12,000 people who suffer from type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Queensland says, “For every person diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, there could be nearly three people who are undiagnosed, have pre-diabetes or are at high risk.” “If this proves correct, this amounts to an additional 35,847 people on the Coast at risk,” says Shadow Minister for Health, Mark McArdle. “Adding the figures together totals 47,796. That is a staggering number.” McArdle says type 2 diabetes accounts for almost one in three avoidable hospital admissions in Queensland. “Yet, we can help ourselves … as it can be prevented or managed by healthy eating habits and exercise.” Diabetes sufferers are more prone to stroke, kidney failure, blindness, heart attacks and are at greater risk of non-traumatic lower limb amputation. McArdle is urging type 2 diabetes sufferers to become more aware of their condition and make appropriate lifestyle changes to manage their disease rather than relying on the next miracle cure.
GET YOUR GUT SORTED Do you take a probiotic regularly? While they aren’t cure-all pills, probiotic supplements are great for general health, and have been shown to help f ght infections such as colds and gut problems including antibiotic-related diarrhoea and irritable bowel syndrome. Probiotics can help clear acne, and f ght thrush, and may even reduce anxiety and depression.
NAVIGATING CHANGE Naturopath Jodi Chapman guides you through the challenges of life.
L
ife constantly presents challenges. Some are amazing, and some may also cause you to feel overwhelmed, overworked, unbalanced and unhappy. Change often creates a period of time where fearing the unknown becomes all too much. The need to put in extra effort during the process of experiencing the unknown creates more pressure, so unloading some unnecessary stressors may be a great start. Taking a few other steps to be on top of your game could very well mean the difference between coping well, or not at all. My advice is to: 1. Eat well. Include all food groups to supply you with fuel to keep up with the extra pressures. Boost mood and energy by avoiding
foods with chemicals and preservatives, choose organic and avoid chemicals in your home. 2. Sleep well, at least eight hours a night. Go to bed early and get solid sleep through the night. 3. Look at your relationships. Resolve issues or move on from a relationship that doesn’t serve you. 4. Balance your life. Reduce responsibilities, work fewer hours, exercise more, get outside, breathe fresh air, and surround yourself with beauty and the people you love. Know there is always going to be a better day, and that you have some say in how it goes. Nothing changes if nothing changes. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au
Is “Making Babies” proving difficult? Need real answers right now?
The facts... Infertility currently impacts more than one in six Australian couples, or over 3 million Australians, and this trend is increasing. It is predicted that one in three couples could be affected by sub-fertility or infertility within the next ten to twenty years. Men and women are now essentially equal when it comes to investigating the casual factors that may contribute to reproductive problems.

MY OPINION
NOT-SO-HAPPY CAMPER
QLD’S BAD DAY IN COURT
Sami Muirhead fesses up about ditching a smelly campervan and sneaking home in the middle of the night.
I
am now a camper! Well, sort of. I know it is considered un-Australian if you do not enjoy camping, but my dirty secret is I have gone four decades without camping. And being secretly happy about it. I was raised by a solo mum parent, so we spent our weekends in another gruelling recreation that involves getting down with dirty wild creatures and lots of hunting and gathering: shopping. So last week, when my work called on us to tour the Coast in a revamped caravan from the 1980s, I was a little tentative about leaving my ensuite and king sized comfy bed. I am not a snob, I just like my creature comforts. Night one of being at one with nature, Mayor Mark Jamieson was a good sport and smashed a $4 bottle of rose Spumante over the van to commission it. I am pure class. In the process he cut his hand and needed a stitch or two. After that drama I needed a drink, but we had just splashed the grog over the damn van. Lesson one of camping: always drink the alcohol. Then the rain came. We went
running inside for cover and there, six of us sat looking at each other’s nose hairs and smelling each other’s body odours. It was indeed cosey. I tried to sleep a few hours later, but some feral male kept popping off and snoring. So I got into my car and drove home. Heaven. But something happened the next day. The sun came out and I found myself looking forward to heading back to the van and the relaxed lifestyle. The week was spent having lots of cuppas and Kingstons bikkies and chatting to lovely souls of all ages from all over the country. We traversed the Coast from Coolum to Caloundra and it was pure heaven. We would enjoy happy hour every sunset, seeing a different slice of our region. I loved it and I relaxed. Life was just a bit sweeter. But I must admit. I would later in the night jump in my car and head home to sleep in my bed. Perhaps I am not a camper after all.
“I tried to sleep a few hours later, but some feral male kept popping off and snoring”

Media, communications and politics specialist Carolyn Tucker says the dispute in our judiciary is doing untold damage.
I
t has been 11 months since the Newman Government announced the controversial appointment of Tim Carmody as Queensland’s Chief Justice, a position previously occupied by some of the state’s top legal minds. It has never been a popularity contest, but those elevated to the role have generally earned the respect of their colleagues and the wider profession. What we are witnessing in the wake of Tim Carmody’s appointment is unprecedented and doing little to instil public confidence in our justice system. It was a meteoric rise after just nine months as Chief Magistrate and the criticism of his appointment has been searing and relentless. In his valedictory speech in March, retiring Supreme Court judge Alan Wilson revealed Justice Carmody had privately referred to his judicial colleagues as “snakes” and “scum”. “Both the remarks, and this kind of hypocrisy, have a devastating effect on morale,” Justice Wilson told the audience. “I hear judges at all levels of seniority, including quite young ones, speaking seriously of resignation. The problem is bad and, in my view, getting worse.” Prophetic words. The latest eruption between Justice Carmody and a colleague resulted in him withdrawing from the
appeal lodged by Daniel Morcombe’s killer and the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice McMurdo, declaring she won’t sit with Justice Carmody on any court again. It followed a tense email exchange between the two amid allegations of perceived bias raised by the defence team after Justice Carmody met child protection advocate Hetty Johnston in April amid the appeal. After initially digging in and dismissing the suggestions of bias as preposterous, Justice Carmody opted out and took a swipe at his judicial colleague on the way. That this occurred during such a high profile case and the Morcombes were caught in the crossfire makes it even more unfortunate. Surely it’s time for a circuit breaker to put an end to this mess. It is not enough to tell the warring parties to ‘put a sock in it’ and ‘sort it out’ as some MPs have so far offered by way of dispute resolution. Our courts have been labelled dysfunctional and it would appear there are irreconcilable differences between members of the judiciary and their leader. In March Justice Carmody was quoted as saying: “If I felt that the office was being damaged, the brand was being damaged because of who was at the helm, and that person was me, I would leave”. I wonder just how much more damage has to be done.

TRAVEL
IRISH ROOTS
Mix a bit of history with a little luxury in Belfast. WORDS: Karen Bowerman, AAP
M
y guide, David Lyttle, heads into a residential street in west Belfast and stops at the end terrace. The front of the house looks like any other: small porch, neat net curtains and a white door. But the back is enclosed in a giant metal cage. The home is just metres from one of Northern Ireland’s peace walls, erected to try to defuse tension in areas where loyalist and nationalist communities lived close together. The ‘cage’ was built to protect a nationalist Catholic family from any stones, bricks or petrol bombs that may have been thrown over the wall by loyalist Protestants. I find the eight-metre-high wall – and the house with its bars – disturbing. But David makes a telling remark: “Most of us don’t see them anymore”. It’s a sign of how Belfast has moved on since the peace process of the 1990s. Lyttle is one of the guides who drives visitors around to see points of interest. The Europa Hotel, where I’m staying,
is another example of how the city’s refused to be defined by the past. During the troubles, the hotel was bombed 28 times. But in 1993, local hotelier Sir William Hastings bought the wrecked building and turned it into a city landmark. I spend the morning at the Titanic Museum on the city’s waterfront, not far from the Harland and Wolff shipyard where the liner was built. The museum is shaped like four hulls, each a staggering 27 metres high – the same height as the Titanic. Inside is a high-tech, multimedia experience with a theme park-style ride through the shipyard and a 3D film taking visitors on a journey from the engine room, through the lavish decks, to the bridge where everything is calm. Later, the voices of actual survivors recount what happened during the 1912 tragedy. One recalls how, as they hit the iceberg, a piece of it broke off and landed on the deck beside him. He recalls an officer saying it was “nothing to worry about” and then

Water fountain in front of the Culloden on the outskirts of Belfast proceeded to make a snowball. That afternoon, I head to the Culloden Estate and Spa for tea – with a splash of Hendricks gin. Apparently, its subtle flavour, infused with cucumber and rose petals, makes it the perfect accompaniment to scones and cakes. It’s a naughty treat but who’s to know, since it’s served in a teapot? The Culloden is a five-star country house hotel in Holywood, County Down, about 10 kilometres east of Belfast. I ask the barman if he’s ever served any famous guests. He mentions Robbie Williams, David Beckham and Lady Gaga, while Van Morrison has an office in the hotel grounds. The Belfast singer-songwriter, who launched his solo career with Brown-Eyed Girl in the 1960s, has recently joined forces with Hastings hotels to offer one-off shows for just a few hundred people. The idea is to re-create the feel of the jazz clubs where he began singing. From Holywood, I explore the Ards Peninsula, following the eastern shore of Strangford Lough, the largest sea inlet in the British Isles, to Newtownards. A short ferry ride across The Narrows (the strait at the bottom of the lough) takes me from Portaferry to Strangford, where I continue to Newcastle – a seaside town at the foot of the Mourne Mountains.
My room at the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa has views of the crags and Newcastle’s sandy beach. The hotel was originally built by the Belfast and County Down Railway as an end-of-the-line, luxury destination. It had a bakery, vegetable garden and pigs, and offered seawater baths to guests. Today, its spa is a little more sophisticated. That evening, I pay it a visit. As mist drifts over the mountains, I relax in the softly lit sauna and watch darkness creep over the sea. – Karen Bowerman was a guest of Hastings Hotels.

ORGANIC GROWTH Anthony Ward is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
A
s the Australian All Ordinaries Index flirts with the psychological 6,000 point barrier, investors have been tempted to look for new opportunities on the market. Investors are starting to question whether the market darlings (read the banks, Telstra, Wesfarmers and others) which have been doing the bulk of the heavy lifting, can continue with their stellar share price performance. One new company that has met with investor enthusiasm, is the recently listed Bellamy’s Australia (BAL). Bellamy’s is an Australian company, based in Tasmania that produces 100 per cent certified organic food and formula products for babies, toddlers and children.
myweeklypreview.com.au
27.indd 1
It offers a wide range of products including baby formula, baby food pouches, teething rusks, pasta, cereals, freeze dried fruit snacks and fruit bars. Its products are sold through supermarket chains, pharmacy chains and independent stores across Australia. It also sells its products in China and South-East Asia and via online stores. In 2004, Bellamy’s was established as Bellamy’s Organic in Launceston, Tasmania. It was the first to offer an organic baby formula range to Australian mothers. In 2007, Bellamy’s Organic was acquired by privately owned business Tasmanian Pure Foods. In June 2014, Tasmanian Pure Foods was renamed Bellamy’s Australia which also boasts offices in Shanghai and Singapore. The initial public offering was in August 2014 at $1 per share. Since listing, the share price has soared to more than $3 per share and
Ord Minnett’s research is confident of further growth ahead. The near-term earnings growth will be driven by a combination of increasing domestic demand for its organic products, complemented by new distribution arrangements and expansion into key offshore markets such as China. Not only is it expected that overall demand for its product categories will continue to grow strongly, but it’s anticipated that Bellamy’s will increase its market share within those categories, underpinned by its unique organic offering.

Prepare yourself for a night of laughter as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival rolls into town. The 16th annual roadshow is being staged at The Events Centre, Caloundra on Wednesday night and will feature some of the best home-grown talent and international comedians from the festival. Spicks and Specks host Josh Earl will be joined by rising star and Nova FM’s Nath Valvo, Australian writer and standup comedian Adam Rozenbachs, awardwinning character Beau Heartbreaker and 2014 Adelaide Comedian of the Year Ivan Aristeguieta. The 18-plus only event is at The Events Centre on Wednesday, May 20 at 8pm. Tickets $42.
The laughter will continue at the centre on Thursday with comedian Anh Do bringing his best-selling memoir, The Happiest Refugee, to life in a standup show. Do uses his humour, real life stories, photos and film to retell his inspiring journey of travelling to Australia in 1980 on an eight-metre fishing boat with 47 other Vietnamese refugees. It was the first of many struggles for a young Do, who overcame difficulties to become a lawyer and, in 2008, Australia’s Comedian of the Year. Do is performing on May 21 at 8pm. Tickets $49.90. Sunshine Coast solo artist Dane Austin is set to shine in Mooloolaba this month. Accompanied by his heartfelt voice and an acoustic guitar, he has become one of the region’s most exciting new emerging artists bringing his sound of folk-pop across the borders. Having performed extensively across America, Austin is now back home and will perform at One Up Bar this month. Austin will be at One Up Bar on Sunday, May 17 at 3pm and Friday, May 29 at 7pm.
Maria Davis, Caloundra Surf Club head chef What’s your favourite go-to meal at home? One-pot extra spicy chilli con carne with my home grown Dracula chillies. What’s your favourite produce that you source locally? I love the outstanding quality of the locally grown herbs. What do you think Sunshine Coast diners are looking for? Value for money and fresh ingredients. What’s the strangest meal request you have ever had? When customers ask you to deconstruct a meal and it ends up being completely different to what was on the menu. What do you enjoy most about working on the Sunshine Coast? Great produce and a variety of seafood. Coming from the UK, I have found it refreshing to cook with the different varieties of seafood and produce. What task do you love handing over to your apprentice and why? Mashed potatoes – it’s a time consuming job.

TOP What would be your last meal on earth? Authentic Chinese dim sum with char siu buns being my favourite. Piece of equipment I couldn’t live without? My knives. Who was or is your inspiration? My first head chef, Francis Bulmer, in the UK. He was always pushing me to have a go and gave me so much freedom in the kitchen, even with his live lobsters. Caloundra Surf Club on the water at Kings Beach serves traditional favourites with a modern twist. Phone 5491 8418.

ast week, while trying to do the rightly by my oldest now that he’s a teenager, I showed him the ill effects of hard liquor. I put a worm in a glass of water and a worm in a glass of scotch. The worm in the water survived but the worm in the scotch curled up and died. I said “Fynn, what does this show you?” He said “Well Dad, if you drink alcohol, you won’t get worms.” Smart kid. This is the boy I spoke with only a few months ago, saying “Hey mate, it’s probably time we had a yarn about sex and that…” To which he put down his iPad, looked me in the eye and replied “Sure Dad, what do you want to know?” Me: “Ummm, we’re all good here, let’s hit the surf! Good chat.” Here’s some good news. I discovered this week that beer does not make you fat. In fact, it makes you lean… against bars, trees, taxi’s, kebab shop counters. Having said that, drinking has been known to cause memory loss. Or worse than that, memory loss. Only a few weeks ago I had a night out with some buddies at the Brightwater, we indulged in some frothy ones, some quiet ones and some very loud ones, and I missed the courtesy bus. So I thought sweet, I’ll walk home, it’s not that far and because I’m more out of shape than Manny Pacman Pacquiao’s ego, I could do with some exercise. Sure enough, I’m half way home and a cop car pulls up beside me and asks, “Hey buddy, where are you staggering to at this crazy hour?” I replied, “I’m going to a lecture officer…” The copper shone the torch in my eyes and said, “Really mate? That’s a good one. Who would be giving a lecture in the middle of the night?”
I looked at him as best I could and replied, “My wife.” True story. This week we wrap the laughing gear around a new brew from the good peeps at Koala beer in NSW. It’s Wilde Gluten Free Pale Ale and it’s tops. Several years ago my wife Michelle was diagnosed as a coeliac, so it meant no more beers. Not so anymore. Wilde GF Pale Ale is brewed using alternate grains that don’t contain any allergy type nasties and is as close to a normal PA as anything I’ve tasted. It contains live yeast , is bottle conditioned like a Coopers and is non-filtered and more importantly, preservative free. Although it’s not my first Pale Ale of choice (hard to go past 150 Lashes) it’s a ripper and a real treat for those who can no longer indulge in a traditional beer. With 4.5% AV it’s crisp and clean as and fully deserves the silver medal it scored at the 2014 Australian International Beer Awards. I give the Wilde Gluten Free Pale Ale a solid 4 out of 5 thumbs up. SOUND OF SILENCE Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the MAZDA6 TOURING WAGON
M
azda has been making plenty of noise in the new car market for years now. But lately it’s gone quiet. Literally. While the booming Japanese brand continues to make its presence felt on
the sales front, it’s now more likely to be seen but not heard. Driving the updated Mazda6 was something we’ve looked forward to since testing the car shortly after its launch a couple of years ago. Back then we were struck by its
slinky, handsome lines which at the time we likened to a Japanese Jaguar or perhaps an Oriental Audi. But such is the quality of the latest model’s ride, handling and noise suppression that perhaps MercedesBenz is now a more appropriate
comparison. Of all Mazda’s key selling features, quietness has not traditionally been a particular strong point. That’s changed with recent models and the 6 is making quite an impression. Or a quiet impression, if you like.

But I had to be impressed by the 6’s improved levels of smoothness and quietness when I stopped at a traffic light and the engine turned itself off to save fuel, and then back on again without me noticing. Mazda has kindly quantified this improvement - they say the latest 6 is 10 per cent quieter when travelling on rough roads, and 25 per cent less noisy when cruising along a smooth highway. Okay, it’s not quite a match for a Benz (or an Audi or Jag for that matter) in terms of equipment and luxury finishes. But for a car costing as little as $32,000 and a tick under $40-grand in the form we just tested it, the 6 certainly delivers a premium quality experience. It’s not all that long ago that Honda was, in our view, the stand-out Japanese manufacturer in terms of the quality of its engineering, the stylishness of its design and the levels of finish it provided on affordable family machines. That mantle has unquestionably been passed to Mazda these days and that’s true of virtually all models we’ve tested in the past year or two. The baby Mazda2 has lifted the bar for small cars, the Mazda3 continues to rule the compact hatch and sedan roost, and the CX5 has carved a huge chunk
APRIL ADVENTURE A DVENTURE
DEALS
out of the SUV market. The 6, as perhaps the flagship of the Mazda range, is every bit as impressive. Apart from its ethereal styling, there’s no particular stand-out feature that sets the 6 apart from its rivals. It just does everything well. Ride is beautifully resolved, it turns into corners with authority and delivers all the grip an average driver could ever
“And, of course, it’s quiet. At 100 km/h, there is almost a total absence of road noise ” demand of a car. It’s never fussed or hurried by rough surfaces. And, of course, it’s quiet. At 100km/h on the open road, there is an almost total absence of road noise and the engine is barely audible. Wind intrusion and tyre roar has been all but eliminated. We tested the 6 in wagon form, the Touring model with a price tag of $38,580 plus the usual add-ons.
That gets you the standard 2.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a six-speed auto. There’s also a diesel option that’s a couple of grand more. We were impressed by the car’s finish and also a reasonably generous level of standard equipment that extends to satellite navigation, electric windows, mirrors and seats, an electronic park brake, adaptive headlights, lane-keeping assist and a radar-controlled smart-city braking system. The new model gets the useful head-up display of speed and other vital information projected onto the windscreen in your eye-line part of a suite of safety technology collectively known as i-Activesense. Funny name, but clever stuff. Inside it’s hard to imagine the 6 was due for a mid-life update - so fresh and contemporary does it still look. But it’s been almost three years since the model was first spotted on Australian roads, so the freshen-up is probably appropriate. Thanks to the fruits of a free-trade agreement between Australia and Japan, Mazda has even been able offer this new model almost $1,000 cheaper than when the car was launched in 2012. Mazda’s resurgence continues apace. A quiet resurgence, at that.
MAZDA6 TOURING WAGON HOW BIG? It’s a generous mid-sizer, with the sleek lines of the wagon not preventing it from delivering plenty of useful space in the rear seats and cargo bay. HOW FAST? It’s no slouch, thanks to a fourcylinder petrol engine delivering 138 kilowatts. A feature called Drive Select allows you to squeeze more performance out of the engine and transmission. HOW THIRSTY? It uses only 6.6 litres per 100km, decent economy for a biggish machine. The i-Stop system that kills the engine when at idle helps save precious fuel. HOW MUCH? The Touring Wagon, will cost you $38,580 with auto transmission. The cheapest model is $32,450, while the most expensive Atenza, with the more expensive diesel engine, just sneaks over the $50k mark.

AWESOME AUDI
T
he Audi A6 allroad quattro has been comprehensively refreshed, with design changes, a new engine, technology innovations and a price of $111,900. Since the first Audi allroad quattro arrived in 2001 the model has won over Australian customers. Previously limited to 150 vehicles, the allroad quattro is now a permanent part of the A6 line-up. Audi Australia’s managing director Andrew Doyle says the vehicle suits people who lead an active lifestyle. “It excels in challenging conditions,
offers plenty of usable space in an alternative to the popular SUV body style and it has a distinctive style that complements the Audi A6’s handsome proportions,’’ he says. “We fully expect that as a permanent part of the new Audi A6 range, and with the new sharper price point, that the success of this outstanding model will continue.’’ In keeping with the rest of the A6 range, the updated model sports a new front grille, headlight design, side sills, rear-end treatment and interior layout. The new high-resolution Driver Information System (DIS) sits in between the speedometer and tachometer readouts displaying map-based navigation. Meanwhile, the 3.0 V6 TDI diesel engine boasts 160kW of power and 500Nm of torque. For more information visit www.audi. com.au

FAST AND FUN
t isn’t every day you get to push a luxury car to its limits but this is exactly what 48 Sunshine Coast people had the chance to do last month. The group ditched the local roads for Lakeside Raceway as part of the Coastline BMW Driving Experience. During the half day course, customers had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of some of the best adrenalin-charged vehicles including the BMW M3 Sedan, BMW M4 Coupe, BMW 428i Coupé with M Sport Package and BMW M235i Coupé. Coastline BMW business development manager Janina Berlinghoff says the group received expert guidance from the BMW Driving Experience team.
“The day at Lakeside was broken up into two half day sessions, each with 24 participants,’’ Berlinghoff says. “Driving around a race track is the best way to truly experience the power of the ultimate driving machine. “Especially the BMW M3 and M4 which are built for the track and you can fully appreciate their ability. “We usually offer this once a year to our customer, however anyone can book a BMW Driving Experience directly through BMW and enjoy a full day course.’’

NEWS ROUND-UP
New home statistics, local sales success and foreign investment are all making news this week.
CUTS JUST A START FOR FIRST HOME BUYERS
Steve Pery, Lee Sutherland, Steve Perry & Jason Stock
RE/MAX PROPERTY TEAM RACKS UP AWARDS
This year another five awards were added to those that are proudly displayed at the RE/MAX Property Sales office, following the announcement of RE/MAX Australia’s annual awards based on 2014 performance. Sales associate Steve Pery was inducted into the RE/ MAX International Hall of Fame, an honour belonging to an elite group whose members have generated more than $US1 million (about $1.27 million) in commission since joining RE/MAX. Just 11 Australians were recognised this year. RE/MAX Australia grants its top achievers membership each year in five tiered clubs – 100%, Gold, Platinum, Chairman’s and Diamond – in recognition of the previous calendar year successes. Based on his 2014 sales activity, Steve Pery achieved 100% Club status, Steve Perry and Jason Stock achieved Gold Club status and Lee Sutherland reached Platinum Club status. “The club awards represent an exceptional degree of customer service focus, communication, and marketing and negotiation skills,” said RE/MAX Australia managing director Michael Davoren. Steve Perry was also recognised for his 10 years of service. “Steve is an outstanding sales specialist and an exceptional leader who has distinguished himself in RE/ MAX and the real estate industry itself, and RE/MAX Property Sales is a proven winner,” says Davoren. “To be so well recognised in such a network is an honour for this team,” says Perry, who is the owner of the Nambour-based agency. “We are immensely proud of the service and outcomes we deliver. Perry says the property market on the Sunshine Coast is very strong with keen buyer and investor interest, with properties seen to be generally affordable and offering a good lifestyle, and convenience to beaches, the hinterland and Brisbane.
Last week’s rate cut by the Reserve Bank of Australia means the official interest rate is at a new record low. Neville Sanders, the president of the Real Estate Institute of Australia, says “With an official interest rate of just two per cent, most home owners can expect to be paying an average of 5.3 per cent, and so the RBA Board’s decision will help home owners on an average loan by around $70 per month. But the lenders need to pass on this rate cut to borrowers in full.” He adds this caution to new buyers though: “The recent low rates have allowed many Australians to enter the property market, however, borrowers should remember that interest rates will inevitably rise as the economy strengthens and they should not overreach themselves.” The REIA has lobbied for a comprehensive approach to tackle housing affordability, particularly for first home buyers whose numbers in the market are at historical lows. REIA CEO Amanda Lynch says, “In our submission to the Senate Committee, REIA called for the Commonwealth Government to take a leadership role in addressing the problem of inadequate supply and to work with state, territory and local governments to formulate appropriate policies. “Australia has a long and proud tradition of high ownership levels and we want to see this continue into the future. It is very pleasing to see the Government consider the new dynamics facing younger Australians.”
FOREIGN BUYERS MUST NOT BE LEFT BEHIND
The Queensland Government recently ruled out new taxes on property purchases by foreign investors, and the decision has been welcomed by the Real Estate Institute of Queensland. REIQ chairman Rob Honeycombe says in a recovering property market, the decision gives certainty to investors. Foreign investors are already taxed at a federal level and the REIQ is concerned a state tax could slow the market. “Foreign investors can only buy new property in Queensland, not established homes, and the supply to this sector of the market is very strong,” Honeycombe says. “Foreign investors are not competing with mumand-dad purchasers for suburban homes, and it’s a myth that foreign investors are driving up property prices in Queensland. The overwhelming majority of
foreign investors buy off-the-plan in the inner city suburbs where we have a large selection of choice and a lot of supply keeping prices in check and maintaining affordability.” In 2014 Queensland recorded $51 billion worth of residential real estate transactions, the highest level since 2010, but still well below the peak of $73 billion in 2007. The REIQ believes this shows the market is still a long way from a full recovery. A third of Queenslanders are housed in rental accommodation, and Honeycombe says the supply of rental properties to this market is crucial, and all investors are contributing to the stability of the rental market. “The Queensland housing market is not in the same position as the Melbourne and Sydney markets and we need to welcome investment in housing, especially new housing,” he says. “Traditionally, the property market helps the rest of the economy stabilise and the decision to not hobble that recovery is responsible and appropriate.”
NEW HOUSING FACTS The Housing Industry Association has issued these new facts and stats: • The geographical divergence to new home building conditions remains historically large. The further upward momentum to new home building in 2015 will be driven by two of Australia’s eight states and territories – NSW and Queensland. • The mature stage of the new housing upcycle is being driven by multi-unit commencements, predominantly 40 My Weekly Preview | May 15, 2015
40.indd 1
medium/high density dwellings. • A lack of shovel-ready land, among a number of constraints, is leaving a significant cohort of potential new home buyers of detached housing out in the cold. • Generalised comments regarding Australia having an oversupply of housing are erroneous. • HIA’s Housing Australia’s Future research highlights a need for a minimum of 186,000 new dwellings per annum on average over the next 40 years if we are to
adequately house our growing and ageing population while maintaining reasonable growth in Australians’ standard of living. • Over the past 40 years new dwelling commencements have averaged 153,000 per annum. The 20-year average is 155,400 while over the past decade we have averaged just over 159,000 per annum.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
What a run of waves! Yeeew...hopefully you all scored a few little gems. As for this weekend, sadly it seems to be a two edge sword. A big bump in swell will have an ESE wind at 20 knots on it so not sure what to advise. Maybe Noosa? Maybe D.I. - Rainbow side . Apart from that I got nothing as it is the devil wind. But best to check it early in case the weather guys have got it wrong, which does seem the case a lot of times. On an even brighter note some pictures are coming through from Sumatra - 6ft and not a drop of water out of place and no crowds. I guess now is the time to start planning if you haven’t started. Don’t wait! Call World Surfaries to get you hooked-up.

N M U S E H N S A Rules: Form as many words as possible. Each word must contain the centre letter. Plurals made by adding “s” are not counted. GOOD 16 BETTER 19 BEST 21
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Calling all twins – your ruling planet Mercury starts retrograding through Gemini so (over the next three weeks) expect twice the stuff-ups and double the delays! You’ll need to be extra patient and adaptable… plus maintain a sense of humour.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] You’ll feel pulled in opposing directions this week, as multiple responsibilities compete for your attention. If you prioritise and pace yourself, then you’ll feel less stressed. Know that you are appreciated and loved, even when others don’t show it.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Relations with a child or friend could hit a bumpy patch but don’t dwell on it, lions. Jovial Jupiter is still moving through your sign (until August 11). This only happens every 12 years so make the most of it! It’s time to expand, enthuse, encourage and explore.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Expect professional confusion over the next three weeks, as Mercury reverses through your career zone. So it’s not a good time to sign contracts, start a business or go on an important business trip. Make sure you back-up files and allow plenty of time to get to appointments.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Relationships will be complicated as passion is combined with power plays, and romance is coupled with responsibility. The Venus/Pluto opposition triggers petty jealousies at home or work. Schedule sensitive discussions for another week.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Scorpios have a tendency to go to extremes. This week, avoid the temptation to turn a relationship rumble into a major rift, or a minor matter into a grand obsession. Mercury is reversing through your shared resources zone, so you need to check your financial situation.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Variety is the buzz word as you tackle a range of projects and multitask like a pro. Close relationships will be bumpy but, if you are patient, you’ll muddle through. Avoid getting drawn into petty power plays. On the weekend you’re keen to escape your weekday life.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Have you got stuck in a rut when it comes to unhealthy eating choices and lack of exercise? It’s a wonderful week to revamp your diet and reboot your exercise routine. The more you nurture your body, the better you’ll feel – physically, mentally and emotionally.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] You’re keen to catch up with friends and acquaintances but resist the temptation to pass on gossip. A relationship with a child, teenager or friend is about to go through a rough patch, as Mercury confuses communication and heightens sensitivities.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] When it comes to career concerns or family matters, don’t let vague worries do your head in. Stressing about things that might happen in the distant future is not the sensible way to go. Instead, concentrate on practical changes you can make right here and right now.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] With the new moon giving you a confidence boost, it’s the best week of the year to rejuvenate your appearance and revise your plans for the future. But with Mars and retro Mercury stirring up your finance zone, are you spending money faster than you feel comfortable with?

THE L AST W ORD
CURLY QUESTIONS Richard O’Leary searches for the answers to life’s big questions.
“W
ho is the greatest man?” my eldest son asked as I drove him and his brother to school last week. My mind quickly raced to try and find an answer. I bought some time by explaining why the question probably should be ‘who is the greatest person?’ But that bought a few seconds; I needed minutes, hours, days. This is a daily challenge for me, trying to answer these types of questions. The question is often prefaced with, “So, what can we talk about today?” And is usually followed by completely reasonable inquiries, things like: “How was the universe formed?” What was there before the Big Bang?” “Who is God?” “Who was the mother of the first person?” “What would happen if Santa died?” Now I know that there are no bad questions, but there are plenty of
mediocre answers, and I’ve been responsible for plenty of them during these morning quizzes. I find it difficult to provide anything like a cogent and considered response while trying to negotiate peak hour traffic, plan my work day and run through the checklist
“Who was the mother of the first person?” of everything the boys need for that day: Money for cooking? Permission slips? Clothes for school activities? My boys are understanding and if I start to struggle they are always ready to step in with some helpful advice: “Maybe you should just Google it?” But maybe even Google doesn’t
have the definitive answer to who is the greatest person of all time. I went through a roll call of all the usual suspects in my head; The Big Three – Jesus Christ, Mohammed, and Buddha; L.Ron Hubbard (kidding); Mandela; Joan of Arc; Shakespeare; Catherine the Great; Jane Austen; Abraham Lincoln; Mother Teresa; Aristotle; former Parramatta halfback Peter Sterling (not kidding – four premierships don’t lie). “Daddy. Daddy.” My thoughts are interrupted by my impatient six year-old. “It’s OK, Daddy, I already know the answer.” Thank God for that, I think. “Really? Well who is it?” “No-one,” he says, “there is no greatest man – everyone is equally great.” That sounded like a pretty good answer to me. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
